How to Get Promoted in PalinWorld.

9 09 2008

Immediately after Palin was selected as John McCain’s running mate, the campaign began singing her praises about ‘executive experience’, and also her experience as “commander-in-chief” of the Alaska National Guard. VoteVets reminds us what happened next.

But the reality of the situation–that Palin actually had little to do with the National Guard quickly became apparent. In fact, the idea was undercut severely by comments made by the actual commander of the Alaska National Guard–its Adjutant General, Major General Craig Campbell. When that happened, it eventually turned into somewhat of a national joke, culminating in the humiliation of McCain/Palin campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds on CNN when he tried to promote Palin’s “foreign policy” experience during the Republican National Convention.

But suddenly–and strangely–the commander of the Alaska National Guard, Major General Campbell, changed his story. By the end of the convention, he was praising Palin’s experience, talking on TV about how she had taken control of Alaska’s National Guard operations and how she was a “great” leader.

(**Mudflats Warning – Get your toothbrush ready. This one’s going to make your teeth hurt.)

Interestingly enough, Palin promoted him with his third star–to the rank of Lieutenant General–only three days later.

Essentially, Campbell had been unhelpful to the campaign at the very least. But all of a sudden he became one of Palin’s biggest supporters. And he was then promoted to be one of the two highest-ranking state National Guard officials in the country.

Up until now, we’ve only gotten lessons in how to get fired in Palin’s world. But now, it seems, we know what it takes to move ahead.

I guess some of that Fannie Mae bailout money is on its way to Alaska. Of course this isn’t an earmark, just bribing those that roll over for her. So much for all these rugged men the History Channel keeps showing us who are individualists. A little pressure from Washington and they fold like a trophy moose.

What’s amazing is that adding Palin has brought McCain into a dead heat with Obama. When you control the public purse all things are possible.

Btw, found this up and coming website called Electoral-Vote that is tracking all the polls. Very good site for up to date information on the election.

So McPain just pulled out of a Larry King interview claiming the CNN/Tucker Bounds interview ‘over the line.’

Having watched the interview in its entirety, I simply cannot see how a direct request for examples of foreign policy or executive command leadership is ‘over the line.’ Tucker made claims, and then would not back up those claims with examples. His reply? Paraphrased, that essentially any decision Palin would have made surely outweighs any Obama has made in a similar capacity.

How old are we here?

Why, why, why is it that we cannot become more familiar with Sarah Palin via concrete evidence of her political experience freely provided by the Mccain campaign?

Never have I seen a Republican ticket insult the intelligence (and take advantage of the lack of intelligence) of the voting public as this election.

Frankly, I am not sure I will make through this election.

All you Alaskans – except for fires, how often are the National Guard members “called out”? Because in most states, that isn’t happening except in emergencies.

So is it true that the Governor of a state deals with the day-to-day movements and activities of the Guard? I always thought the Military did that.

When Campbell Brown said that the Pentagon directed that, the McCain spokesman said nothing in rebuttal.

9 09 2008
Phil

Thank God for Campbell Brown!!! I love that clip!!! I’ve seen the whole clip on YouTube several times.

I am really getting concerned today! It seems like Obama is off his game lately. I saw him on Countdown with Keith Olbermann last night, and he was stumbling through his answers and he just didn’t seem to have that ooomph that he’s had all along. Same with Biden and Hillary yesterday. Hillary looked like she was out there yesterday just out of obligation. It certainly wasn’t the fired up Hillary we saw during her campaign. I really think Obama and Biden need to take a different approach. As i’ve said before, Obama has taken the high road much to his credit, but it’s obvious that when your opponents have you down in the mud and the mudballs keep flying at you, you’ve got to throw bigger and faster mudballs back just for survival and victory.

Maybe all their truthful talk about the economy really is just preaching to the choir. I think they really need to start playing defense in this game. Expose McCain and Palin with sarcasm and don’t be afraid to get down in the mud!!!

Is it just my way of thinking or is it tres unseemly for a command officer to have that much shit stuck to his nose? I dunno but wouldn’t a general have too much self-esteem to NOT stick his nose up a civilian’s butt hole?

Where does the Department of Defense stand on this specific matter? Do they care at all about the integrity of the armed forces, even the national guard? And isn’t there a prohibition about current-duty personnel getting involved in truly political matters?

She will perform no meaningful tasks in a McCain administration. She’ll fly to funerals on Air Force Two (assuming she doesn’t sell it on eBay and get around in a single engine Bush plane – just to keep up the image). On really slow afternoons she’ll play cribbage in her office with her chief of staff. McCain will name her perhaps his Special Liaison to the Evangelical Community or his Blue Ribbon Coordinator with the Caribou, or to some other function he doesn’t want to bother his real staff with, doesn’t care about, and doesn’t want to know about. They’ll have a (very) brief breakfast once a month and share pleasantries and croissants.

Make Tucker enlist and send his dumb ass to Eye-Rack. There are more guns floating around in my city than in the entire Alaska Nat’l Guard — so should we make the leader of the 18th St. Crips Commander in Chief? For f**k’s sake.

Will the Obama camp at least make THIS part of their argument, or is it off-limits, too? Just hand the race over to McCain if you’re going to be such wussies about this crap. I’m fed up. Every time I read more about this, my blood starts to boil.

so what, pray tell, did she implement to help the soldiers when she got back from kuwait?

Phil,
It’s either one thing or the other: either Obama knows he is beaten and is marking time, or he knows something the rest of us don’t. I don’t think we should look to Hillary to fight his battles for him, either – she is obviously going to sit this one out (like she did back in 2004, when the country could have used her) and wait for the second Great Depression to start, then in 2012 she will be able to pop up again and say “Told ya so, folks”!

People in this country say they admire principled politicians, but in fact they despise them. They prefer Jerry Springer and a knock down drag out fight – it’s far more entertaining than thinking!

BREAKING NEWS: Palin’s Banned Book List!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“…Some of the finest examples of American literature are on this list. AMERICA WAKE UP! A Sarah Palin as Vice President of the United States is a symbol not for change but for intolerance…”

Find the entire list at:

http://tspey.wordpress.com/

**As much as we would all love to have ‘the list’, I’m afraid it’s not going to happen. This list has been circulating for a little while, but isn’t the real list. She asked the librarian if she would “be OK with” removing certain books. But we don’t even know if she specified what they were. She was feeling out the librarian’s opinion on the concept. Librarian said no way. Palin told librarian she was getting the axe. Citizens revolted. Palin relented.

Is the general reading a teleprompter? It sure looks like it, and being unfamiliar with being on the TV, seems to jump all over GVS’s questions. He seems ready to answer before the questions are even asked. Or am I just reading things into the “interview”? It is Faux News.

Next question:

Read a different blogger (Phil Munger) about how Sarah actually believes that the world will end in her lifetime… My question is: If McCain gets elected, will actions that Mrs. Palin takes, facilitate the end-times or delay them?

That’s not the banned book list. This one has already been debunked here and elsewhere. The issue really isnt WHAT books she asked to have removed but merely the fact that she DID ask. She could have asked for the Joy of Cooking to be banned for all it’s worth. The point is that asking to ban ANY book is wrong.

Be careful about that banned book list. does anybody know what it was that palin put into the hands of the soldiers in the clip above from kuwait?

there was a report a month or so ago of members of the american military giving coins containing christian imprecations to iraqis going through a checkpoint to get to their home. i would suspect that palin was giving the soldiers shown in the clip that same christian coin or something similar but it would be great to have confirmation.

governors have no more of right to proselytize troops than troops have to proselytize each other or iraqis. given that there is specifically policy against both of the latter, one might think that there would be also for the former.

We went through this anxiety when Clinton went negative. His poll numbers went down, every body got gloom and doom, she won primaries. More gloom and doom.

But you know what? Turned out the guy and his campaign knew exactly what they were doing.

I’m thinking they still do. The fact that this stuff about Palin is drip, drip, dripping out at all, tells me that with 55 days until election, with a V.P. debate, with 2 presidential debates.

It’s still anybody’s game.

I just want to make sure that we are not just talking amongst ourselves here, and bringing info in… but also getting out there on blogs where people haven’t heard about this before. Source: Top Lieberman aide quit in protest

Joe Lieberman’s legislative director Joe Goffman resigned yesterday in protest of his boss’s support of John McCain, according to a former Lieberman staffer with knowledge of the situation.

Goffman’s farewell email, posted here yesterday, suggested he had no new job waiting for him but gave no reason for his departure.

The resignation — delivered to Lieberman in person upon his return from the GOP convention on Monday — is only the latest in a half-dozen recent defections by top aides disaffected with Lieberman’s party switch.

Other departed deputies include Fred Downey, Lieberman’s long time foreign policy adviser, and two well-regarded legislative assistants, Colleen Shogan and Purva Rawal.

“Goffman is the biggest loss, he was really the guy who held the whole office together,” said the former aide. “Goffman, like most of them, was very disturbed by Lieberman’s behavior — Lieberman hasn’t consulted with any of them or told them what he planned to say… If you’re a Democrat and you stay in Lieberman’s office too long, there could be the perception that you are buying into his positions, so these poor guys are being put in a terrible spot.”

Goffman and other Lieberman refugees are reportedly being assisted in job hunts by Democratic leadership staff.

Goffman didn’t return calls for comment at his office or home.

Is there somewhere is Wasilla that costs $120 for lunch? I worked in NYC for 10 years and if I submitted an expense claim like that I would have been told to pay for it myself or justify it with a client’s name, company and purpose of the lunch. If Ms. Palin’s expenses are funded by Federal Tax dollars, I would like to see what I am paying for. I mean she has nothing to hide, right?

Not to stir rumors… but my mother knows someone who knew Carol McCain and John McCain shortly after he had returned from Vietnam and was fully recovered. This person indicated that he had a bad temper and was very controlling.

My Great Uncle was severely wounded in the Battle of the Argonne Forest in October 1918. He went is as a 1st Lieutenant with a BS Degree in Engineering from what is now Carnegie-Mellon University. He came back with a mind of a 5 year old child from the brain injury. My Grandmother had to go to NYC and go from hospital ship to hospital ship to try to find him. She did and took him home. There were tens of thousands of wounded coming back from the end of WWI. She had to teach him how to dress himself. How to tie his shoes. How to cut his food and eat it with a spoon. He lived 35 years in VA hospitals until his death in 1955. I met him as a small boy.

JFC! If she actually said this I am PISSED! It is all about them! Unbelievable! Absolutely unbelievable! Only HER FAMILY knows about war! OMG! These people are narcissistic scum. I am livid!

Let'sGetReal

http://dallasmorningviewsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/06/perot-vs-mccain.html

There’s a quote floating around the Interwebs this week from Ross Perot that slams John McCain (from London’s Mail on Sunday newspaper, posted June 8):

But Ross Perot, who paid her medical bills all those years ago, now believes that both Carol McCain and the American people have been taken in by a man who is unusually slick and cruel – even by the standards of modern politics.
‘McCain is the classic opportunist. He’s always reaching for attention and glory,’ he said.

‘After he came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona. And the rest is history.’

That sounded familiar to me. I swore that I had read it before. So I went digging, and I came up with this excerpt of an interview Perot gave to Jonathan Alter, a senior editor and all-around political guru at Newsweek (posted Jan. 16):

Just days before the South Carolina GOP primary, he wants me to know that McCain “is the classic opportunist–he’s always reaching for attention and glory. Other POWs won’t even sit at the same table with him.” …

How did Meghan explain what happened AFTER Daddy got home from Vietnam? Any mention of the 1st Mrs. McCain and those pesky, first children? I am utterly amazed how they are using the children and then ask for “hands off” at the same time. It would be like telling your boss that you need to take time off for your child’s illness and then screaming “it is none of your business!” when the boss asks how the child is when you return. EVERY Man, woman and child who is living and have been touched by the pain of war should read her the riot act. War causes human damage on BOTH sides, Meghan, but I guess “daddy” did not explain that. When my husband and I went to Hanoi and visited the “Hanoi Hilton” we were aghast at these wooden boxes with spikes sticking inward. These were reserved for the Vietnamese who “sympathized” with the Americans. I guarantee you that no one came out of those alive, let alone ran for President 40 years later regurgitating his experience over and over. While I realize the prison is now a museum and slanted for propaganda, it is very clear to anyone who has been there, the Vietnamese treated their own people much worst. War is hell for everyone, Meghan, that is why we should try to avoid it at all costs.

I got this from a musician friend of mine. I think the website is interesting in it’s commentary… I am NOT affiliated with this group and do not know anything about them, except this little bio bit.. but it seems to add to the body of info on the Palin issue.

http://portugaltheman.net/

PORTUGAL. THE MAN MEMBERS SPEAK OUT ON SARAH PALIN

So, the MOST famous person from Wasilla, Alaska is GOP Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. But, RIGHT behind her are Wasilla natives John Baldwin Gourley and Zachary Scott Carothers, two members of indie-rock band Portugal. The Man, who, in its four-and-a-half-star review of the band’s new album, “Censored Colors,” Alternative Press called “one of the truly great bands of this generation.”

John Gourley has just posted a blog on the band’s website – http://portugaltheman.net/ – where he writes a passionate and touching essay about HIS Alaska, what is a TRUE Alaskan, and why we, the American people, don’t need Sarah Palin.

Gourley and Carothers grew up in the tiny town of Wasilla, fishing, hiking, and playing music together. Gourley and his hippie parents lived outside of town in a remote log cabin that was powered by a generator and had no phone. His mom and dad, a team of dog sled mushers, ran Alaska’s annual Iditarod, dubbed the “last great race on earth.” And Carothers remembers his frequent banter with Palin, then Wasilla’s Mayor, about building a town skate park (never happened). Gourley and Carothers’ families still live in Wasilla, and both return home whenever their touring schedule allows. Gourley has said that Alaska, with its breathtaking, ice-filled landscapes, has had a huge impact on the band’s music.

With their third album, “Censored Colors” set for release September 16, and their fall U.S. headline tour kicking off October 14, the critically-acclaimed blusey/folkie/indie/progy/poppy rock band has been making their own mark in the Lower Forty-Eight. Cutting-edge media, from Filter to Absolute Punk to Alternative Press to theTripwire have raved about the band, and put P.TM in some pretty heady company, comparing their music to the music of artists like the White Stripes, the Mars Volta, Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin and even the Beatles.

McCain’s treatment of women and his famous temper…

Lots of stories about his temper. Saw a clip yesterday (here???) with Sens. Boxer and Hutchison. Hutch was defending, natch, although she’s FAR more qualified to be VP than Palin! Said that everyone in the Senate loses it periodically. Boxer was just shaking her head. Responded with something like, yeah, people get upset, but not like McCain. I suspect his new-found unwillingness to meet with the media except in controlled situations may be the result. He did a recent interview with Time, which should certainly have been friendly, and he was downright rude, snide and snotty whenever they pushed him at all. Suspect that may be Obama’s debate posture — can they give McCain enough Prozac to be cool and still coherent???

There are lots of references on the ‘Net, including video of him losing it and displaying a potty mouth. Here’s just one (sans vid).
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/capitol-briefing/2007/05/mccain_cornyn_cursing_showdown.html
The entire exchange sounds like Cornyn was miffed at McCain grandstanding.

I don’t necessarily fault people for having a potty mouth. I’ve been known to engage myself from time to time, but it’s always when I’m ticked off. And I really try to watch my mouth unless I’m with friends. I sure wouldn’t do it if I thought it’d be on camera or if was running or expected to run for high political office. I’d clean up my act in a hurry. At least that way I could argue that it was a former bad habit that I’d broken!

As to how he treats Cindy, there are plenty of reports of his mouth getting the better of him when he’s annoyed at her too. The kind of stuff that nobody should say to a loved one, especially with withnesses. I don’t suppose they’re talking though, so it can just be passed off as ugly rumor. Dems get lambasted but Repubs get a pass. “It just shows his grit.” Sheeeesh!

Does anyone here remember whether other presidential candidates have done what McCain is doing on the “stump” – the constant repetition (almost verbatim) of his acceptance speech (or of selected parts of it). This is a real question – it’s getting to the point where I can almost mouth the words of his speech along with him (yes, perhaps I am listening too much). I really don’t notice that with Obama. Has everyone watched the video via the link Christina reposted? If not, take the time! I just watched it and immediately posted it to my Facebook profile.
I too would like to see this used as the basis for an effective ad – it would be as effective as the “daisy” ad that only was aired (once) by Johnson’s campaign for the 1964 election. (There’s even an entry about this ad on Wikipedia.) I learned on the Wiki that the Republicans cried ‘foul’ about this ad, because it was ‘fear-mongering’. Well, it’s time to fight fire with fire.
One other thing I like about it is that since Palin is not on it all the focus is drawn to McCain. You feel sick about him by the time it’s over.

McCain Camp: Biden “Sunk To A New Low” On Stem Cell Research

Biden:
“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy…and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect,” he said. “Well, guess what folks? If you care about it, why don’t you support stem cell research?”

Biden spokesman David Wade insisted Tuesday the Delaware senator’s comments were not directed at Palin.

“This is a clash of policies, not a clash of personalities,” Wade said. “We’ve heard not a dime’s worth of difference between the McCain-Palin ticket and the Bush Administration on medical breakthroughs that millions of parents and doctors believe could save lives and transform the quality of life for countless Americans.”

JB, while I think that’s an excellent article in the Huffington Post, don’t underestimate Obama. I think he knows exactly what he is doing and his tactics are very sound. Watch both parts of his interview with Keith Olbermann. He is being very consistent in his campaign strategy and he’s not taking the bait of getting into either a mud-slinging brawl or a ping-pong contest of negative attacks. Over and over again he repeats the specific points of his platform and reaffirms that he has confidence in the intelligence of the American people. That coupled with his tremendously well organized grass-roots campaign will do him far more good than any rabble rousing at this point. Remember, right now we are still broiling away in the fires the conventions have lit. Things will settle down, the media will swing away from adoring Palin into investigating her (it’s already happening) , the debates will give the public a chance to compare the candidates on their issues. Obama has a long-term operative plan and it is heartening to me to see that he is not allowing himself to be swayed by the heat and the emotion of the moment. THAT is the sort of President I want in the white house–someone who can keep his perspective and his cool in the midst of a crisis. What did Rudyard Kipling say?–“If you can keep your head when all about you/ are losing theirs and blaming it on you…..” That’s our man and we should be proud of him for it.

Drchl, I agree that we should be very careful before we repeated stories. Responsible people will get their bonafides in order before they publish.

However, if you compare the number of lies that Sarah Palin has said just since McCain annointed her VP and compare them to the handful of partially incorrect statements about Palin (i.e., she may not have given the librarian a book list, but she certainly used her position of authority to attempt to intimidate her), Palin is WAY in the lead in the “lie” column.

AND her lies were intentional. Partial errors on Palin’s background is just well-meaning but uncareful vetting of information.

And McCain-Palin and the GOP surely knows about vetting problems by now.

Okay I have a little behind the scenes Alaska gossip for you about Craig Campbell.

Campbell’s daughter worked for me about fifteen years ago. I guess she would have been about 19 or twenty years old.

She flat hated her dad!

He was running for the Anchorage Assembly at the time and he forced her to participate in one of his commercials (Actually it might have been his ONLY commercial.)

Anyhow she shows up to do the commercial drunk off her ass! And Campbell, who is so straight laced that he probably has a two by four shoved up his ass, was completely humiliated. So he took out her speaking part but still made her do the family walk down the street that all of these minor politicians make their families do with them. The poor girl was so tipsy that she couldn’t walk straight and they had to do a number of takes to get it right.

I won’t give you her first name because she was a good kid, but I remember she even flirted with the idea of being a Wiccan just to piss her dad off who was this super strict Christian guy.

She grew out of all of that stuff after awhile, like I said she was a good kid.

Mollys Mum.
Thanks for your level-headed remarks. Don’t get me wrong–I have not and will not give up on, lose faith in, or underestimate Obama. It’s the American public that sometimes chill me to the bone with their inability or unwillingness to think critically about what they are fed by various sources. I think we all enjoyed Obama’s strong stance hinting of righteous indignation in his speech in Denver. I’m just asking for more of THAT, because THAT is what most Americans can agree is a picture of strong, serious, believable leader. Like Westen said in that post on Huffington, many many Americans vote with their guts. Barack has the thinkers on his side already. Now he really does have to think in terms of “chess.”

The title of this should be ‘How to Get Promoted (Or Not Fired) in PalinWorld.’

Ok, he goes from

“he and Palin play no role in national defense activities, even when they involve the Alaska National Guard. The entire operation is under federal control, and the governor is not briefed on situations.”

to

“I’ll tell you, in the last few days, I’ve been watching the press, and I’ve not been very pleased with what I’ve been seeing about the chastising of the National Guard by having it diminished by the insinuation that a commander-in-chief of the National Guard doesn’t really control the military. The National Guard has 500,000 people in it around this great country, serving in states and overseas. National Guards are state military forces run by governors, and Sarah Palin does it great.”

“Oh yeah”, he says ,”she does it real good”.

Its sickening. If you are going to jerk me off, at least, use a kung-fu grip. Now they are the champion of the National Guard. If anyone is against our troops, its Bush and McWar. They were dragged kicking and screaming to sign the GI Bill.

I don’t fault Major-General. Some people have a family to support and need to keep their jobs. I certainly would not want her signing my paychecks. I fault this so-called model of Christianity morality treating people like “ground noise and static”.

It is indeed gross, despicable, filled with fear on so many levels it is also
the way the Republican really thinks.

I am a child of the 60’s.

My mother passed away when I was7 years old.
I raised by a southern Father ( Boone, N.C. ) and a very
turn of the century grandmother ( born Aug 6 1905 ).

My father was indeed raised in a Pentecostal church.
My grandmother ( my mothers , mother ) was Episcopal
and I was raised as an Episcopal in a little town that missed being the Capitol of the U. S. by one single vote in Congress.
I digress, needless to say my upbringing was very WASPY.
Yet at no time ever in my life did I ever hear either one of the people
who there to shape my life ever refer to anyone without respect.
This includes people of other faiths, color and ethnicity.
Once as a young child, and I HATE to admit this, I heard the ” N ”
word used at school. Honestly at that time I did not even know what
the ” N ” word was actually referring too.
I used the word at our dinner table. Even though I used the word wrongly,
it was quickly and efficiently pointed out to me that I would never be using that word again in front of my Gram and my Dad. The heat from my backside
did much to instill in me a relevant need never to utter that word again as well. I also learned that from that point on when I learned a new phrase or word to ASK my Gram and Dad what the word meant.
When I had my children, I raised them both to be as respectful of others
as I had been raised.
FOX news for all its proclamations of ” Christianity ” is anything but.
FOX NEWS is racist, bigoted and hateful coupled with being as far away from what I hope most Americans believe in as Ms. Palin is from that Bridge.

From the Minnesota Independent: “Maybe if we had done it right, maybe some of that money would have gone to inspect those bridges and other bridges around the country,” McCain said at a campaign stop in Ankeny, Iowa on Aug. 4, 2007. “Maybe the 200,000 people who cross that bridge every day would have been safer than spending $233 million of your tax dollars on a bridge in Alaska to an island with 50 people on it.”

So, McCain points to Palin as having played a significant role in the deaths and injuries that resulted from the collapse.

On the Florida/Jewish vote, I can tell you that Palin is NOT sitting well here in Florida. My friend’s elderly parents were all for McCain and then…the announcement changed everything. And as the MSM picks stuff up the resolve becomes stronger. The endorsement by Koch is huge to this group who probably had Mayor Koch as their man in NYC before they moved down here to retire. Even my husband’s father who, yikes!, liked McCain and was trying to dissuade my Rep/Obama man based on tax lies. But we have sent him the link for the taxpolicy site, explained that we are willing to pay 1.5% more for the benefit of the country, and suggested he look a little harder at Ms. Palin’s “business” trips to speak at her former church. I don’t think he will be so gung-ho when he hears about the “Jews for Jesus” stuff. While it might not be proper to consider that, it will still have the impact nonetheless. The MSM media is always slow on the uptake so be patient my Mudpals. Even my usually quiet friends are starting to rally out loud for Obama. Imagine if we (from now to election day) simply communicated to our friends and family what we’ve learned.

“The Left’s Strategy for Sarah Palin”

” … It would likely be a coup-de-grace for the Obama campaign if McCain was forced to admit his folly in choosing Palin as a running mate.

Now, it seems, the Democrats strategy has backfired. Unable to unseat Palin as the Republican VP nominee, the lingering memory of that first week of attacks has caused the Republican base to rally behind their embattled sweetheart any time the “liberal media” dare question her. While this can be overcome in time, with 56 days left in the campaign, it remains to be seen how capably the Democrats can criticize Palin without further galvanizing her support.

I hope not I think we should Boycott ” Sarah Palin” and instead stay focused on McCain and “McCain’s choice”

McCain Launches Sex-Ed Spot; Obama Camp: “Perverse”

The spot, titled “Education,” comes after the two candidates went back and forth over education issues most of Tuesday. It is an attack the Obama campaign should be ready for. The same lines were used against the Senator during his run for office in 2004 by challenger Alan Keyes, and were brought up during the primary by Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

“Obama supported “age appropriate” sex-education for children as a means of teaching them what was proper or inproper touching, as well as to protect them against pedophiles, his campaign has said.”

THE McCain AD SAYS, in part:

Legislation to teach “comprehensive sex education” to kindergartners.

Learning about sex before learning to read?

Barack Obama.

Wrong on education. Wrong for your family.

misskae beat me to it.

The best part of the report was McCain saying that Palin sold the jet on eBay and made money for the state of AK. The truth is that it did not sell on eBay, but rather was sold by a “broker” and the sale lost money.

Also, that she was in favor of the bridge and that by the time she withdrew her support it was dead anyway so she did not kill it.

Yes, she did let the personal chef go but she was rehired by the state legislature.

Poll Madness: McCain Takes Lead Even As Democrats Out-Register Republicans?

This week’s mainstream coverage of the presidential horse-race has been dominated by a series of polls showing the McCain-Palin ticket with its first stable lead over Obama and Biden. Gallup’s tracking poll, USA Today and CBS News all show the Republicans with some kind of lead over the Democratic ticket. But, interestingly, all three polls were also conducted using a higher sampling of Republican voters than in July, thus raising a question of methodology.

NBC just covered the “not correct” claims about the Bridge, the Plane, the Chef. Does not seem to want to call them lies, but did show both Palin and in some cases McCain making the claims then the reporter would explain what really happened. McCain campaign is now saying he misspoke about the e-bay airplane sale. Looks like the MSM is finally starting to look at a few of these things.

Wonder when McCain and Palin will change their TV ads which make some of the claims?

9 09 2008
Palmdale, CA

The problems with Palin are relevant. They reflect McCain’s judgement, decision-making and temperament as a potential president. All the Palin issues demonstrate failings in McCain’s judgement and decision-making. We all know she wasn’t thoroughly vetted. How obvious is that!

The GOP said they Googled her. Lots of far-right sites had been pushing her for months — mostly under the radar. They say they used clipping searches. Any guesses whether the Wasilla Frontiersman or even the ADN is in Lex-Nex?

He’s the top of the ticket. He’s the one we need to focus on. She’s the shiny object — the Trojan moose. The GOP says this is a campaign of personalities, not issues. For me, temperament is a key componenet of personality. It shows character. I’m waiting for McCruel to blow a gasket for all to see… the debate would be perfect!

Barack has remained cool and unflappable, dispite all the nasty and personal attacks, which will continue. That he was able to beat the Clinton machine says oodles for his strategic thinking and ability to execute a sound plan. They’ve stayed consistent and focused. McBush has been all over the map trying to find that magic something. He thinks Palin is it,. But he’s getting worried — thus, the “truth squad.” Remember, Barack had one months ago!

Barack’s campaign is focused on the electoral vote. That’s where the rubber meets the road, and there he’s ahead. He has a great ground operation going back to the primaries. He’s almost invisible up her in my area — he knows it won’t go blue, but that CA will. So he’s concentrating on where it’ll pay the best return. Plus he has more winnable combinations available than McCain does among the “in play” states.

We can’t let up. But we need to step back, take a deep breath (me included), and look at this realistically. It’s not as bad as it feels.

AKM, how’s about helping us stay focused on McCain? Use the Palin stuff as evidence, not as a shiny object. You’re providing a hugely important service. If nothing else, look at all the friendships that are being created — a true community. That’s nothing to sneeze at. And if my assessment about the campaign is wrong, they’ll be more important than ever.

NBC Nightly News also said that McCain gets a better reception when Palin is with him and therefore, it would seem the campaign plan has been changed to have them appear together more often. Seems to me that means fewer campaign appearances.

Also, the most recent NBC poll has Obama ahead by a couple of points, but factoring in error, the polls are a virtual tie. I wish I could recall the other comments about the poll but the phone rang and I, unfortunately, answered it! However, the point was that both campaigns are apparently where they want to be in the polls at this point in time. Also, the swing states are down to 9 and that Ohio, VA and one other state – hopefully someone else picked up which one – hold the key.

I think the confusion about the use of the word “perverse” comes from the reply from the Obama camp whose response was:

“It is shameful and downright perverse for the McCain campaign to use a bill that was written to protect young children from sexual predators as a recycled and discredited political attack against a father of two young girls – a position that his friend Mitt Romney also holds. Last week, John McCain told Time magazine he couldn’t define what honor was. Now we know why,” says Obama spokesman Bill Burton in an emailed statement.

But once they know her positions and lies, they are quick to come back to Obama. Remember, respect, tell only ‘vetted’ facts, don’t distort, but build on the truth. I have to believe that women won’t let this country down. I’ve been waiting for a woman president/vp- but you know what? I can wait longer.

Hey, everyone. Here’s my advice on how to win the campaign. (Now, you ask, why should I listen to Lulu? Who the heck is Lulu? Let me see her CV and then I’ll know if I can trust her advice. Here’s all you need to know: I’m an average American, born into a red state, currently living in a blue one.)

McCain readily admits he doesn’t understand the economy. Palin doesn’t either (see her recent economic gaffe for one example, over the weekend, on Fannie Mae, etc). It’s like ’92. “It’s the economy, stupid!” 99.9% of the country is worse off from the Bush years, and these two have NO PLAN to fix it. They have NO economic acumen. NONE. Obama has really done his work and knows his recovery plan inside and out. You can read it on BarackObama.com

Most of us are hurting financially. If we can forego the endless fascination with the McCain/Palin lies and scandals (YES WE CAN), and just repeat the meme about the economy, I know it will resonate with the majority of the other voters.

I have decided to use a play from the Palin playbook, and I admit it’s low, but at this point, I have to take off the gloves and play as they play – they set the rules:

When people say they don’t know who they are going to vote for or if they are undecided, I ask them if they are willing to put my son (insert child’s name) in harm’s way and potentially have him killed for McCain’s “Holy War”. . . that we started btw. . . where there is no proof of MWD, never was. . . and if they are willing to have his blood on their hands by their vote. I don’t care how low it is anymore. . . I have to bring it home to people to at least THINK before they vote.

I found out something interesting today. I wish I remembered where I read it. Apparently the polling companies were including a percentage of Democrats vs Republicans aligned by the percentage registered to vote, before the Republican convention. All of a sudden, after the convention, they are including an equal number of Democrats to Republicans and excluding independents. No wonder the polls all of a sudden changed. They moved the goalposts. Not surprising considering the fact that the polling outfits are owned by conservative corporations like the MSM.

I don’t worry about the polls because the “national average” means nothing. Here’s what counts:

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/
http://electoral-vote.com/

And finally, none of the polls (even the state-wide polls) take into account the fact that the Democrats outvoted the Republicans 3-1 in the primaries and that the Democrats are registering thousands of new voters every week.

Barack Obama attacks President Bush’s Iraq troop withdrawal plan

By Peter Nicholas and Maeve Reston
Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
September 10, 2008

DAYTON, Ohio — Democrat Barack Obama today called President Bush’s Iraq drawdown plan “very modest” and charged that Republican rival John McCain would continue “the overwhelming focus on Iraq that has taken our eye off of the terrorists who actually attacked us on 9/11.”

Bush announced earlier today that the United States would begin bringing home about 3,400 combat support forces — including aviation personnel, explosive ordinance teams, combat and construction engineers, military police and logistical support forces. He also said a Marine battalion in Anbar would come home by November with an Army combat brigade to follow in February, and announced additional troops for Afghanistan.

“His plan comes up short,” Obama said, noting that the largest withdrawal will take place in February, after Bush leaves office. “It is not enough troops, and not enough resources, with not enough urgency.”

Obama faulted Bush and McCain for focusing on Iraq when “the central front in the war on terror is not in Iraq and it never was.” He called for a rebuilt military and “a comprehensive strategy to finish the job in Afghanistan.”…

Wasn’t anyone paying attention? I don’t know what they’re thinking on this one. I don’t know how she thinks she can do it, even with family help.’

Looks like the NBC report by Lisa Myers on the various “claims” is viewable on their website. If ABC did a similar story (see post above) it may also show up on the abcnews.com website.

At the moment, I can’t get it to play, maybe because the site is swamped??

Ana Gama (14:52:32) :
This week’s mainstream coverage of the presidential horse-race has been dominated by a series of polls showing the McCain-Palin ticket with its first stable lead over Obama and Biden. Gallup’s tracking poll, USA Today and CBS News all show the Republicans with some kind of lead over the Democratic ticket. But, interestingly, all three polls were also conducted using a higher sampling of Republican voters than in July, thus raising a question of methodology.

This is why I am not worried. If you include another 10% of one party and their polling goes up 7% then I guess what it really means is their polling went down 3%.

The polling companies are cooking the books. Before the Republican convention they included proportional numbers of Republicans and Democrats based on registration. Now they are including and even number. Of course that’s going to skew the poll. The other thing they are doing is not including independents.

“We have to educate women who are infatuated with SP- everywhere you go, bring up the subject and wait for their response- and them inform them of her positions…”

Great idea! I think all we have to do is let them know that when she was Mayor of Wasalia they charged rape victims for the rape investigation kits. The practice was only ended when a State law was passed that made it illegal. Even then, Palin’s hand-picked police chief said he thought the new law was wrong.

Right there you know all you ever need to know about Sarah Pain’s feelings towards other women, and what kind of treatment women can expect if Sarah Palin becomes VP or president.

I have lived in San Francisco my entire life–all 44 years. I met my first republican last year. I am so friggin sick of these right wing “troll” talking about my town. I suppose you do not like something about San Francisco as well.

In fact, Palin mentioned SF again today. Did she mention she was coming here and is charging $50,000 to have her picture taken with people.

This is the only safe haven I have found on the internet where I felt free to post. So much for that notion. I thought Americans were the intolerant ones. There goes that idea.

And I know that’s crossing the line into somewhat ad feminem attacks, but it just goes to show you never really know what a particular woman is thinking. And certainly I am not the first one to make that observation!

9 09 2008

I heard something today that made me think. Someone needs to ask McCain and Palin what will be the penalty for a doctor giving a woman an abortion or a woman getting an abortion after they overturn Roe v Wade. That’s actually a good question to ask someone who is anti-choice. I mean, think about it. They would be defining abortion as murder so the penalty could be death. Would they advocate the death penalty for a woman who had an abortion because she was raped or was a victim of incest? Would they give the death penalty to the doctor? Or how about a doctor who performs an abortion on a woman who would die without one. Because if Roe v Wade is overturned, there will be no exceptions, even to save a woman’s life. Because if you make exceptions, you invalidate making it illegal.

i’m not sure i have a complete grasp on the whole national guard thing. but isn’t it true that UNTIL 2007, the national guard was under command of the governor. but in 2007, because of the katrina disaster, federal authority over the guard was expanded? and even before 2007, wasn’t the president able to pull the national guard in wartime? i don’t know…i am certainly no military expert…that’s just my understanding of it…am i wrong?
and i read an article on newsweek from factcheck.org “debunking” many of the “rumors” about palin. i kind of trusted factcheck…is it still trustworthy?
i almost think i need to just tune all of this out as i’ve become completely obsessed (had to tune out during the primaries eventually for the same reason). it’s almost impossible for me to discuss anything else anymore. all i can say is…President Obama: God Bless America. I agree with a number of others here who have said that introducing Sarah Palin has caused a huge DISTRACTION for everyone (including us).
Yes, it is good that some of the questions about her have come out so that we can evaluate her as a VP candidate, and more will come out as this goes on.
But, given what she herself has said, and given the information that has, and continues to, come out about her, the kindest thing we can say is that she is a NON-candidate for the VP (and certainly a non-candidate for stepping in to be president).
Having said that, our goal is for people to vote AGAINST MCCAIN. It is McBUSH who chose this non-candidate, it is McBUSH who is trying to fool the American people with her, it is MCBUSH who has twisted the truth for political gain, and it will be MCBUSH who takes the PRESIDENTIAL election from OBAMA.
In talking to our fellow voters, we need to stay focused on that, be armed with FACTS, and remind them that McCain IS a republican by this selection stays true to BUSH like he has in the past. Don’t let Rove make this about personalities! Stay on facts about issues!

I just sent the following letter to the editor of our local paper. As much as I love you all, we’re preaching to the choir, the already converted here. The people we need to reach still read newspapers — at least some do. They don’t read these blogs very often, and we don’t often haunt the ones they do. Write, speak up, talk to people. Around here I don’t expect many people will be moved to vote for Barack. But they might be moved to vote for Bob Barr, or to write in Ron Paul. In either case, that’s as good as a vote for Barack.

Sarah Palin is Karl Rove’s newest shiny object. Her selection as VP nominee was brilliant. It calls attention away from the abject failure of the policies of the last eight years. Endless war, a military stretched nearly to the breaking point, broken promises to our military veterans, the evil twins of the mortgage and credit crises resulting soaring foreclosures plunging property values and rising numbers of bank failures, rising inflation and unemployment, stagnant wages, appalling numbers of Americans with inadequate or no health insurance to cover rising medical costs, retirement funds evaporating for millions of baby boomers just as they approach retirement. Add in a seriously damaged international reputation, the assault on the Constitution, the seeming celebration of ignorance, obstructionism on climate change and most people think were in a bit of a mess.

Many applaud McCain’s choice of a woman as VP nominee. I’m delighted to see women rise to the top. But if this is the best qualified GOP VP candidate, then God help us. Were Palin a man, I seriously doubt she would have gotten a second look. To have selected her is both cynical and sexist.

Study John McCain’s voting record. Then decide if he truly represents change. If you’re better off than you were eight years ago, if you like the direction the country is going, by all means vote for John McCain. But if you like so many Americans, are struggling as a result of those policies, the same ones John McCain supports, don’t be taken in by the shiny object.

The full ratings are posted in several locales, but here are the headlines:
Rachel drew 1,543,000 viewers in total at 9 PM last night. Not only was that better (by 160,000) than Larry King, but it was the second highest number of total viewers in Primetime, not counting Fixed News.
Modesty precludes me from saying who was ahead of her on that list.
The “advertisers’ number” – the number of viewers aged 25 to 54, were also outstanding. 483,000 of the so-called buyers’ demo tuned in, again, beating Larry (by 100,000) and second for any primetime show not on Fox (and she even outdrew Shepard Smith’s 7 PM audience over there at The Zombie Channel).

the truth squad is the strangest thing i have ever seen in all my life. the woman on the list that comes from my home state has her own scandal that she rose above. is this a list of scandal hardened women politicians? or are most of them straight up and just republican?

clearly none of them have read the legislative record on the PPT and the AGIA that is still (that i am aware of) available for perusing on the alaska legislative website.

i read the alaskan legislation and i don’t even live there. i read the USGS/Alaska powerpoint presentation regarding natural gas potential prepared in support of the natural gas pipeline. i read the strident plea by the ex-Secretary of Interior claiming the TransCanada pipeline was a huge mistake. i read the documents that show that TransCanada cannot build the pipeline without the agreement from the three pissed off energy giants. i read the problems with the treaty between canada and the native alaskans regarding construction in the ANWR and surrounding region. i read the issues related to canada’s ability to exchange oversight for access to natural gas so that canada can use ANWR gas to produce from the Alberta oil tar sands. i read about the litigation on the lease that alaska oil and gas commission is trying to yank from exxon/mobil cause of inactivity on Point Thomson gas field.

and i read slide 22 of the USGS/Alaska powerpoint to the Alaskan legislature prior to passage of the AGIA that shows clearly that TEXAS has more proved natural gas reserves than wyoming, colorado, the Gulf, and most of Oklahoma combined. and that Alaska is ranked less than all those states and louisiana. so why in the world would an energy company go all the way up to the coldest, wildest part of the planet to produce gas for alaska? cause the profit isn’t there.

so what is all this about saving the US from dependence on foreign oil?

yeah i read that too.

and i read about a zillion of these blog entries here and elsewhere – pro and con – that range from incredibly astute to a pathetically veneer understanding of “what is going on”.

and now the truth squad is gonna come get the “dumpster divers” ???

well, bring it on. let’s go dumpster diving on the response to public comments pdf file that is not available on the PPT legislative webpage. let’s go find a whole bunch of real files that are gone gone gone. let us please go to google and sort through the barrage of search results that bury the truth.

thank god for youtube and those people that understand the concept of share the wealth (information). i am quickly learning that myself.

crap on a stick. this country is in the few hands of people without morals or self-control.

People, this is serious. The Republicans are getting down and dirty. They just released a disgusting ad saying Obama is for sex-ed for 5 year-olds! A lie!

History has proven over and over again that these smear/scare campaigns do work.

History has also proven that Americans vote for candidates that they can sit down and “have a beer with”. Remember that one? The same thing is now happening with Sarah Palin. “Who cares about issues… she’s a great gal and she likes to hunt!” As ridiculous as that may sound… that’s what many people vote on.

This blog is great and informative, and it’s a great place to vent… but you have to be ACTIVE or McCain/Palin will be elected.

Annie: where are you in WA? My parents grew up in Alameda (housing projects but were kicked out when the military moved in) and when later met, married etc moved to SF because it was the only place they could afford to live. lol. I really like WA.

Laughing: Bolinas! The world’s best unknown town! lol. If i drove a car, I would love to go there once in a while.

UK: they filmed Tales of The City in my neighborhood. You have to rent Streets of San Francisco tho!

In some ways, living here my whole life I do feel sort of helpless about what I can do to change people’s minds in other places since most people here think like me. Well–I guess not in some places in the Bay Area — Silly-con Valley where the Palin show is going to be held next week.

Other than writing letters it is hard to figure out how to approach this election. I did phone banks for Obama on CA election night. I think the headquarters might do phone banking to other states, so I might try that.

I have written to Boxer and Pelosi. For some reason, the only emails I ever get from them is about earthquake preparedness. They know end times are coming! However, I think Code Pink has a pemanent tent in front of Pelosi’s mansion.

McCain Rally to Move From Fairfax School After Outcry

By Michael Alison Chandler and Tim Craig
Washington Post Staff Writers
Tuesday, September 9, 2008; 4:45 PM

Fairfax County school officials said that a rally scheduled tomorrow for Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, will be moved from Fairfax High School, following protests from some School Board members and parents that the event would violate school system policy.

The decision to move the event was made by the McCain campaign, Fairfax schools spokesman Paul Regnier said.

Late in the afternoon, the McCain campaign announced that the rally will be held at Van Dyck Park in Fairfax County and that people will begin assembling at 8 a.m. An e-mail from the campaign said that the Fairfax High field house, which can hold as many as 6,500 people, was not big enough.

A statement from the McCain campaign did not address the controversy.

“Due to the overwhelming response from voters in Virginia, the space at the field house at Fairfax High School will no longer be able to hold everyone who wants to attend this rally,” the campaign said. “We have had double the amount of people respond than we originally expected. In order to accommodate everyone, we need to move the event to a location we are working on now.”

Superintendent Jack D. Dale’s original decision to allow the political rally at the school led some board members to say this morning that he had overstepped his authority. The board’s bylaws forbid campaign events to be held on campus during school hours.

“Only the School Board has the authority to override a policy,” said board member Kaye Kory (Mason). “We did not agree. We did not vote. We didn’t discuss. So this is a violation of not our only our policy, but our procedure.”

She and other board members said they received dozens of e-mails and phone calls from Fairfax residents who were disappointed or enraged by the decision to disrupt the school day with a partisan event.

Dale said in an interview last night that he made an exception to the policy because he thought students would learn a lot about the political process. He also had granted permission to Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) to hold a town hall meeting in July at Robinson Secondary School while there were some arts activities taking place at the school.

McCain campaign officials said last night that they had arranged the rally with school and Fairfax City officials. Fairfax City owns the high school building but contracts with the county to operate it.

Some city officials had been caught off-guard by Dale’s decision as well. Fairfax City Council member Daniel F. Drummond, a former chairman of the city’s Democratic committee, said he called the mayor and school officials this morning to protest the location of the rally.

“The city of Fairfax has a long history of trying to minimize partisanship. . . . Unfortunately, what has happened here is we know have partisanship where it shouldn’t be,” said Drummond, who also plans to send a formal complaint letter to the superintendent this afternoon. “The superintendent of schools of Fairfax has infused partisan politics into the city of Fairfax where it is unnecessary, unwarranted and unwelcome.”

Samantha – I agree with you. I’m exhausted. I was so frustrated last night, that I took a day off to volunteer and do some talking up of my own. I just got back with in after walking my dog with some of my neighbors who were tittering back and forth about Sarah Palin. I have tried very hard not to get into these types of arguments with neighbors and friends and just tell them we have to agree to disagree. However, tonight, I guess I’m just tired, I couldn’t stand it any longer. I asked if they were okay if a mandatory draft was enacted and some of the children in our neighborhood died from this, how would they feel? NO ONE, NO ONE WANTS TO PERSONALIZE their vote. My question is WHY NOT? At the end of the day, it is our collective vote and the electoral college who decides our leader. Your one vote DOES count, and if that is not more important than an additional $50 in your tax bill then I guess I am more alone than I thought.

Wouldn’t it be great if the park was filled with Obama folks?

If you’re in Fairfax Co, VA, be there way before the park opens! Fill it up. No boos, no applause. Just silence. Remember the two guys who just stood there while Bush waved at them as he got off Marine One? (You probably won’t be allowed to bring signs.) Or shout ’em down. Drown ’em out. Wouldn’t it be a great cause to be busted for? Even Cheney’s goons couldn’t ultimately stop the person who respectfully objected to his policies in a public plaza in Vail. They actually tried to bust the man for “assaulting the VP!” For respectfully voicing a differnt view. Is this still America?

Doesn’t McCain (I think Bush has done this as well) have a history of holding “forums” in school auditoriums? If the kids are required to be there, the auditorium is full. Nothing better than a captive audience. This way there is no embarrassment about all the empty seats. McCain had a hard time unloading 10,000 tickets for his veep debut party. This gathering was also done at a school facility.

I’m a disabled single mom. When I made my monthly donation to the Obama campaign, my 12 year old son asked me to chip in his Sept. allowance. It’s a big deal since he’s been saving for a Wii forever. Every little bit helps.

To those who are concerned about preaching to the choir here….I don’t think of it that way. This site is an excellent source for “ammunition” we can use to educate friends, relatives and neighbors. I live in Western Washington, “on the road to Mt. Rainier” – about 50 miles south of Seattle. Our family has lived in WA for 30+ years now, so I’ve grown accustomed to the long, rainy winters, and springs, and often summers…

Although Washington, like California, is a fairly liberal state, I live in a rural community where Obama signs and supporters are not welcomed. Most of our neighbors are very conservative, as is my husband and his family, so I am very careful about how I approach the subject of politics with them. Sometimes, my husband and I simply agree not to talk about the candidates (so nobody gets hurt :))…think we might be representative of the country?

Well, there’s this article:
http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/09/09/ron-paul-plans-special-announcement/

Also there are a few articles where Barr and Paul seem to be working together.

Let’s start chanting right now “Bob BARR!, Bob BARR!” I’ve said since Barr announced his presidential intentions that he would be an excellent alternative to the many Republicans who won’t vote for McCain and who would probably not vote for Obama, either.

I have retired Republican friends who feel this way, but they really like Bob Barr, even if he is a little quirky, because he is basically a Goldwater Republican.

McCain and Palin are Neocons, and old-school Republicans have become alienated from the Neocons.

I don’t see any of the others as much of a diversion for McCain-Palin. But Bob Barr–YOWZER!

There used to be lots of transplanted New Yorkers there, the ones who didn’t move to South Florida. I suspect they’ll not be real happy with some of the things coming out of Palin’s church. Koch might be useful there, too. Don’t know how the demographics have changed over the past decade or so. That’s Heather Wilson’s (R) district. She just barely won last time around. The current Sen race there (for St. Pete’s seat) shows Udall up by 8. Yay! Obama was clearly ahead before the RNC, so we’ll have to see how the next polling goes.

Good question. And I have a ready answer. So here are some thoughts of the top of my head.

Do the readerships overlap? If so, probably not; and certainly not the same letter in case more than one got published. I submit only to our local paper; my views are amply represented in letters to the LA Times! Besides we have a much more liberal letters policy up here, if I can use that word. The Times restricts you to one every so often. Not so with the local. It probably doesn’t hurt that we’ve met the local letters editor. Both of us write — I do it more often because I have more time. At least I did before Mudflats.

With all due respect to John McCain and his experience as a POW, and I hate to be the only one saying so – but… how can he know anything about war, aside from the view of someone shot down and as a POW, if his job was to fly a jet at altitude and drop ordinance or fly protection??

Airplane pilots do not have to face the minute-by-minute task of flying metal, grenades, artillery or vietcong booby traps. The grunts on the ground do not get to fly back to a secure carrier at sea between missions. For the people on the ground, every second is having to face the hell of getting shot to pieces.

In short, how can his daughter now claim that no one knows war like John McCain?? Tell that to the 58,000 names on The Wall. And tell that to the 100,000+ who left physical pieces of themselves in the dust and mud of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Tell it also to the other POW’s from Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. Tell them that they do not know war as well as numbnuts McCain.

Here’s a thought….everyone is baffled by the recent polls. Were more Repubs polled? What about all the new Dems registered?

I have a different “poll”.

It seems to me that businesses, across the board are fighting to get into the line marked “Government Bailout” before Dubya exits the stage.

This unscientific poll indicates to me that Fannie, Freddie, Ford Motor Co., Lehman brothers (and all the rest of Wall Street), banks, airlines, etc. can see the writing on the wall. There is a reason that they are all so anxious to get their government bailout RIGHT NOW.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised that Haliburton and Company lines up for a bailout. (The oil companies already made sure they got theirs, at the pumps.)

Guys, stay collected and committed. They just want you to doubt and get discouraged. This is the time for ordinary citizens to get their government back and corporate America has felt the winds of C H A N G E.

Cassie – you are onto something but reality might be just a tad different.

I’ve noticed, or think I’ve noticed, shifts in the confidence of the stock markets. When McCain/Palin seem to gain ground, the markets get gas. The unease, it seems, is related to economic issues. And we all know that McCain don’t know squat about the economy. Palin probably knows even less. It’s back to the days of the George HW Bush presidency when that old geezer didn’t realize that it was all about the economy.

Time for Obama to really press the case that it’s all about the economy. And that McCain is too damn stupid to handle it.

Business–always looking for the quick buck–will respond in a fickle fashion to a Republican bump, no matter how hopeless. They can then sell off.

Obama Says McCain Is Offering Fake Change:
‘You Can Put Lipstick on a Pig, But It’s Still a Pig’
September 09, 2008 6:10 PM

LEBANON, Va. — “That’s not change,” Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said of what Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is offering.

“You know, you can put lipstick on a pig,” Obama said, “but it’s still a pig.”

The crowd rose and applauded, some of them no doubt thinking he may have been alluding to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s ad lib during her vice presidential nomination acceptance speech last week, “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.”

“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called ‘change,'” Obama continued, “it’s still gonna stink after eight years.

“We’ve had enough of the same old thing! It’s time to bring about real change to Washington. And that’s the choice you’ve got in this election.”

Obama added that “it is not going to be easy … John McCain has a compelling biography, you know Sarah Palin is an interesting story.”

The crowd booed.

“No, she’s new!” Obama said. “She hasn’t been on the scene, you know, she’s got five kids and my hat goes off to anybody who’s looking after five. I’ve got two and they tire Michelle and me out!”

— Jake Tapper and Sunlen Miller

UPDATE: Obama senior adviser Robert Gibbs insists the senator was not referring to Palin. “That’s an old expression,” Gibbs says.

Check out this post – it’s the only one that has come close to why, as a late-30’s woman, the pick of Palin is patronizing and offensive to me.

http://aabw.blogspot.com/2008/09/dangerous-sexism-of-political-chivalry.html

She’s McCain’s trophy “wife” (and he should know!) – not chosen for her education, not chosen for her experience, not chosen for her intelligence, not chosen for her outlook – chosen because she isn’t experienced enough to not take the lead from the man, thus non-threatening, and chosen because she is perky, young, and attractive. Picked for looks, not for talent. How can you get any more sexist and old-thinking than that?!?

Her pick points out the same old Republican position – yes, women are fine in positions of power, but as long as they don’t have too much power, are attractive enough to be eye candy for the old men, and are only feisty in a “cute when she’s angry” kind of way – and as long as they know their place and don’t try to rise above the station of the men – the ladies mustn’t get uppity, don’t you know.

I’m thinking that perhaps we should encourage AKM to set up a members-only Yahoo group for us Mudpups. Their membership list function would allow us to add names, contact info/email addys. Those of us who are willing to host campaign workers could get that solved w/o bothering the campaign. What say AKM? Maybe there’s a better way that wouldn’t involve so much initial effort, but I’m not aware, especially for those of us who don’t yet have our own blogs. Soon, soon. Here’s another thought about my “economic poll”.

Months ago, Haliburton moved to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. We all thought that the move was made to get out of the reach of the IRS.

You will remember that the United Arab Emirates once offered to take over the security for America’s ports and the notion was quashed. (That might have been a good solution for us, but that’s off-point)

Today, it was announced that we are selling several million dollars worth of THHADD(sp?) missiles to the U.A.E. ( capable of reaching Iran, blah, blah, blah)

I have some knowlege of the U.A.E and parts of the Middle East, and I know that they do NOTHING for themselves that they can pay someone else to do for them…that’s what the staggering amounts of oil money ( read, also Alaska) can do for you.

What other “moves” are in process?

So, not only is corporate America lining up for long term commitments, but Middle East nations are doing so, as well.

Fox News “accidentally” airs controversal right wing ad that it had declined to run.

http://thinkprogress.org/2008/08/22/fox-ayers-ad/

The right-wing American Issues Project has spent $2.8 million on an ad questioning Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) relationship to William Ayers, a founder of the 1960s radical group Weather Underground. American Issues Project had hoped to air the controversial ad on Fox News, but even the conservative network refused, reportedly wanting nothing to do with it:

American Issues Project, the sponsor of the ad, is a nonprofit 501(c)4 organization. One of its board members, Ed Failor Jr., was a paid consultant for McCain’s campaign in Iowa last year. The campaign paid his firm $50,000 until July 2007. American Issues Project spokesman Christian Pinkston said Failor has no connection to the McCain campaign now.

Organizers sought to air the ad on Fox News Channel, but a Fox spokesman said the network declined to run it. He would not say why.

This principled stand fell by the wayside today when Fox News accidentally aired the most of the ad. During a segment about Obama’s ties to Tony Rezko, Fox News attempted to play McCain’s latest ad on the subject. However, the Ayers ad began playing instead.

After the ad was almost done, correspondent Molly Henneberg looked confused and said, “This is not the right ad.” Shep Smith replied, “It was an ad. Come on, give us a break. It’s busy back here today

Election experts yesterday raised concerns that this ad may violate election law. Laura MacCleery of the Brennan Center for Justice told Huffington Post that the ad is clearly “express advocacy” and “cannot legally be paid for with corporate money, including those of a non-profit.” In response, the American Issues Project has agreed to disclose its individual donors to the FEC.

My dear Mudflateers/Mudflatters/Mudflatians/Mudpups and AKMuckracker

When I first came across this blog a week ago I was literally stunned. For two long years I have been hoping to find a place on the internet where intelligent Americans (rather than smart-asses) hang out. I’ve *loved* reading you all.

I’m sure none of you have any real idea of how much damage the Bush administration has done in, and to, the rest of the world. Let me not count the ways – I have something else I want you to think about.

It’s no secret that the 2000 election was stolen. How did it come so close in the first place? By dirty Republican tricks – by a hundred different ways to prevent people from voting Democrat, ranging from ridiculously difficult-to-understand but easy-to-misinterpret voting “systems”, by removing potential Democrat voters from the electoral rolls, by setting up logistical ‘roadblocks’ ….. and they will have a whole suite of new tricks up their dirty sleeves this time, now that there is a real threat! I’ve already read that there are dirty tricks afoot with students registering to vote on campus.

I would like every one of you to make it your business to find out what is really going on in your own electorate in terms of dirty tricks. Infiltrate if you must – I don’t expect it will be easy, but it’s vital that no Democrat voter is caught on the hop.

If you live in a safe blue seat, now is the time to plan a visit with your Democrat cousin in a swing state and help out where you can make a difference. Make demographics work for YOU.

Registering voters is the first thing. Getting them into the polling booth armed with the resources to register a valid vote is another thing entirely. Be in a swing state on election day. Help the local Democrat organization with the ‘heavy lifting’ – drive carloads of voters to the polling booths, coach them in potential pitfalls in the voting “system” – and get them there early enough so that a long queue won’t be an impediment.

Before you go, load up on whatever generic campaign materials you can get – don’t leave anything to chance. I’ve read that voting early may already be subject to dirty tricks, so I can’t comment on that.

You all have a deep love for your country and for your fellow man. If that’s all you have to give – give it all. Be a community organizer! It worked for *us* recently in the most important Australian election of our lifetime – we only just made it into a cleaner, saner, more humane world, and it was the ‘nuts and bolts’ stuff that got us over the line.

You have no idea how important this election is on a global scale. If McCain wins, you’ll find out. The U.S. with the buffoon at the helm was at first a figure of fun, then of derision, now of contempt with the recent elevation and celebration of trailer trash motherhood.

I have a bumper sticker left over from the 2004 U.S. election, which says ‘FOUR MORE WARS!’ Today it goes on my car. It’s all I have to give.

Cassie-
Have you read about the Project for the New American Century? It is an organization that Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Jeb Bush, and others “active” in the current administration belong(ed) to. Well the polls are flipping around again. Now Obama is moving ahead. It is getting harder and harder to believe them.

I heard an interesting segment on NPR’s”On the Media” today (downloadable from iTunes) about the polling this year. Several experts spoke. The bottom line is that the old methodology isn’t really working. One of them pointed out that, in the primaries, some polls undercounted Obama’s support by as much as ten percentage points.

Deb- “So it really wasn’t GOD”S plan that we got into Iraq”

I’m sorry all, but Sarah Palin would not know God if he bit her on…….er….if he came up and shook her hand!

She is just the latest patsy who has been flattered by the horrid Powers That Be in the GOP into thinking she’s “God’s Gift” to humanity, here to save us all! She disgusts me!

A laugh from Huffington Post:
An Open Letter to Sarah Palin, from God
by Lisa Penn, HuffintgonPost.com
Posted September 9, 2008 | 04:17 PM (EST)

—–

Dear Sarah,

I was enjoying my usual decaf extra-foam double latte this morning when a quote in the New York Times caught my eye. It was deep down in a story about you and motherhood.

After months of reflection and prayer, friends say, the Palins, who are Christians, had come to believe God had sent them Trig.

Later that day, Ms. Palin sent an e-mail message to her relatives and close friends about her new son, Ms. Bruce said. She signed it, “Trig’s Creator, Your Heavenly Father.”

Listen, Sarah, honey. Did I complain when you claimed the war in Iraq was “God’s plan,” even though I knew all along — thanks to my omniscient all-knowingness! — that there were no weapons of mass destruction there?

Did I send down thunderbolts on your head when you announced in church that I supported building a gas pipe right through Alaska, my most beautiful state? You may think it was easy to create that gorgeous wilderness, sweetie, but it’s a lot harder than it looks. Don’t be fooled by that seven-days creation thing. I am all-powerful, after all! If it had been easy, I’d have done it in an afternoon, then gone out for sushi and chardonnay, like I normally do on Monday nights.

But this time, Sarah, you’ve gone too far. Writing an email and signing my name to it? Do you really think I’m looking for a ghostwriter? Look at what happened the last time around, when I thought I was dictating a simple, clear-cut plan for spiritual living, and instead those darn scribes screwed it all up, writing that self-contradicting mess called the Bible. I’m still trying to straighten all that out.

Speaking of which, quit trying to straighten out the gays! Like we need more heterosexual guys wandering around the planet, knocking up 17-year-old girls. Oh, whoops. No offense!

Anyway, no more sending out emails in my name, okay? Didn’t you stop to think that, if I had actually sent out that birth announcement, I would have gone to the trouble of using nice stationery? I’m God, after all! Not to be obnoxious, but I can afford it, okay?

Oh, and by the way. Yes, I did send Trig to you. Not on purpose, but because that was the number the celestial lottery turned up. So, yeah, you can claim that special bond between us if you’d like. Just like that special bond you have with the clerk at the 7-11 when your scratch card turns up a win.

And listen, I’ve got one more bone to pick with you: “Trig”? Really? This is the name you choose for a gift from God? Suppose the New Testament had begun with Matthew, Mark, Luke and… Trig? Let us now turn to the book of Trig! Maybe we’ll read something big! Like a parable about a pig! Come on, Sarah. Show some judgment here.

All right, that’s it for now. But I’m sure this won’t be the last time we’re in touch before the election. I fully expect you’ll be praying like crazy for help just before your debate with Joltin’ Joe Biden on October 2. Just remember: God helps those who help themselves! Ha! That line cracks me up every time. If you’re helping yourself, what do you need with me, anyway? And then I can play a couple more rounds of golf or go windsurfing, as I like to do on Thursdays.

Good luck, Sarah. Oh, and lay off the polar bears, okay?

Love,

God

Aussie said: You all have a deep love for your country and for your fellow man.

Here’s the thing, Aussie. For the last 8 years, I haven’t had a deep love for my country. Obama ignited my passion. THAT is why I’m voting for him. I don’t agree on every issue, but I agree with the vision he offers. I like that with Obama as prez, America would belong to the people again. What a novelty that will be.

That’s why I’m so invested in this election. I can actually envision an America that makes me proud to say I am American.

I live in NYC. It’s a given that NY will go blue. My vote, in essence, means nothing, but I can’t wait to vote. After I cast my ballot, expect to hear my cheer of joy Down Under.

I didn’t catch who said it, but the idea was that the Obama campaign was being or getting to be “thin-skinned”.

It struck me as something like when a player throws back and is flagged, though they weren’t the one who committed a foul in the first place. Similar to how Biden is getting called out on stem cell research with cries/whines from the McCain campaign that the comments target Palin, who, as everyone knows, has a special needs child.

Given the apparent climate of the press (Campbell Brown’s/CNN roundtable talk making a distinction between strategist and journalist, the “deference”, etc., etc. themes), I’d say keep up the aggression and the issues, hand-in-hand, leading the talk of the campaign, but not being sucked into the blur without responding. It’s very transparent, call it out whenever possible.

Political Amazon

[On CNN/Campbell Brown, Jeffrey Toobin and others are making the case to Bay Buchanan that there is a difference between a strategist and journalist.]

Good heavens. What is Bay Buchanan doing on CNN? She’s a LOON, I mean truly. There seems to be a pattern of instability in their family (her brother, not Pat, once broke into a WJ Clinton affiliates garage and bashed in his car, and Pat himself, although usually professional, can get really agitated and GO OFF on air), and I question the wisdom of bringing Bay Buchanan into such a stressful situation.

I’m telling you, the fact that most polling groups aren’t spending the extra funds to include people who don’t have land lines but cell-phone only, is missing a huge bloc of Obama voters. Overwhelmingly, young voters are backing Obama and the majority of young voters don’t have land-lines, but use cell-phones as their primary phone connection.

I don’t think Biden did anything wrong! He didn’t say Palin was a parent of a child with special needs, but rather was referring to the fact she was throwing her support behind families with special needs children. It was one of the main points of her speech, how is that unfair?

One of Scott Ritter’s better presentations concerned the right-wing desire to “nuke Iran”. You know, McCain’s little ditty, “Bomb, bomb, bomb. Bomb bomb Iran”.

He asks the audience to “Pick your city! Will it be New York, Los Angeles, Boston? Pick which one you want to lose”, because the terrorists will want an eye-for-an-eye deal. They will nuke an American city in retaliation.

The guy was eerily prescient about the no WMD. I believe him.

Biden was awsome and exactly correct in his statement. It goes to her policy, which is against stem-cell research, which can help children with genetic defects. Biden is correct in accusing Palin/McCain of being somewhat disingenuous in their so-called “advocacy” for special needs children by withholding stem-cell research.

1. I decided to have a fund raiser of my own.(since I read the Obama campaign had not yet met expectations) I created a couple of goodies for you to buy and display while you are talking to your friends and family. Go to my blog and let me know what you think if you’d like something.

2. I’ve contacted the Obama campaign and teamed up with the some of the people in my state (I’m in a blue state too in Maryland) and we are heading to PA since the need help there. I was planning to go to VA because they need help there as well.

3. I’ve signed up to contact my neighbors in MD. The campaign will give you a list of voters in your area to call and also train you what to say to them on the phone. They have also requested help for calling in VA.

4. I am the host of my own internet TV show and usually I do info on small business and business ownership issues. However I am planning some shows on the campaign and getting people to voice their opinions, their information links on the issues, as well as FACTs people should know about. Keeping it real. People can text chat with me as well as call. The website is http://www.smallbusinessnetworktv.com and the call in nbr is number is 712 432 3000 pin 462467. Hope you guys will check it out.

So if anyone has any other ideas they would like to share with the group and how we will counterpunch this deal, pls let me know and let’s make it happen. Let’s not get mad, just get going!

McCain gutter strategy may backfire. People are gonna realize soon enough that he’s playing political games while there are serious issues at stake.

My mom, who would be likely to vote for a Republican due to her social conservative views … can’t STAND this republican ticket. She could’ve easily gone for a pro-life ticket … but she’s actually voting AGAINST her social stance because they are so ugly … inside & outside. That entire team doesn’t care about Americans and the issues that we face … all they want to do is maintain their power in Washington, DC. And they will do or say absolutely anything to win.

McCain’s latest ad proves the level that he’s willing to sink and please believe that this is just the tip of the iceberg. People are gonna begin to get frustrated if they keep this negativity going. At this rate this country will be in all-out war by November.

Everyone does seem to recognize the cell phone problem in skewing poll results. The interesting thing I learned today was that apparently most of the polling companies aren’t dealing with it at all yet— it is something they will have to come to grips with “in the future.”

In the “On the Media” segment, a former Gallup executive said that if polls were really honest, they would report that about 60% of respondents said, in effect, “I don’t know what the hell you are talking about.” Ignorance apparently the biggest unreported factor in polling data.

The head of fivethirtyeight.com was on explaining how his methodology does not use traditional polling at all, but various probablility analyses based on past event. He is predicting Obama will get 300 electoral votes.

Certainly the polls lately have been very contradictory, e.g. some polls are noting a huge shift in women voters, especially white women voters with children, to McCain; other polls pick up no shift at all.

I heard CNN’s review of Palin’s claims. I thought it was quite weak, after all that I read. One thing that bothered me was that I had believed that she cut special ed by 62% but later read a somewhat complicated explanation of the funding she did…that she did it quite recently. I don’t remember the link. Does anyone know? I want to make sure that the information I keep is correct. CNN seemed lost that they’re getting comments from both sides, Palin’s side complaing about the attacks on her, and the other side, complaining about the lies. It is information overload for most of us. If Factcheck.org is biased, who is doing a more thorough job?

Hello Friends, I now have time to become politically active. Feel free to share this with any and all. Thank you for reading this!

An Alaskan Woman’s Perspective on Sarah Palin

I am Mary A., age 55, from Fairbanks, Alaska. I wish to voice my strong disapproval of the choice of Sarah Palin as the Republican Vice-Presidential Candidate. I expressed total disbelief when McCain selected her, as did most people in my life. Never in my wildest dreams had I considered her to be even remotely qualified to be our nation’s vice-president, much less our president should that ever be the unfortunate case. I have chosen to write down my thoughts and concerns and to share them with other voters in our state and nation. I want people to know what an Alaskan resident thinks about this choice and why. I have lived here for 30 years, and yes, my family enjoys many activities in the outdoors and in the wilderness. We own guns, we hunt, we fish,we enjoy moose burgers and caribou and salmon and halibut. We pick blueberries and cranberries and harvest gardens. We have sailed in Prince William Sound, the Gulf of Alaska and in Southeast Alaska. We have hiked and kayaked in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other wilderness areas. We are active citizens, always vote, have raised two children here, and are proud to live in Alaska. But Governor Palin would never be our choice vice-president.

Yes, she was a mayor of a small town in Alaska with a small population of under 7000 during her tenure. She was elected with less than 700 total votes. Now she is the governor of our state which has less than 700,000 total residents, and has been so for only 18 months. She was elected with a total of 114,697 votes. Slightly over 239,000 people voted, the lowest voter turnout since 1990. You know, 17 cities in the U.S. have populations greater than the entire state of Alaska! Being Governor of Alaska is like being mayor of a U.S. city where only 239,000 people voted! She’s been learning about government in a small isolated town, and in a state with a small, and isolated population. A small population base makes for a small and often less selective candidate pool. Her experience from a national and world perspective truly is miniscule. It does not make her ready to be a major player on the world stage.

The more I have learned about this candidate since her selection, the more concerned I have become, both about what she is and what she isn’t. Many of my friends, both male and female, have echoed my concerns. Her characterization of her few government accomplishments is disengenuous to put it lightly. She has reaped the benefit of state coffers that are nicely in the black simply due to the state’s royalty share of oil profits. Outrageous world oil prices have given us a budget surplus, not policies from Sarah. She has not had to balance the budget or overcome deficits. She has actually increased our budget considerably. She has not cut our taxes. Alaska does not even have an income tax, nor state sales taxes. What taxes is she talking about? She was definitely for the “Bridge to No Where” until the very last minute and Alaska has kept the money allocated for that project. She has been an active supporter of other earmark funds as well. I am concerned about her national misrepresentation of herself.

During the last year and a half our state has been getting to know this new governor. Her relatively high approval rating may well be due to the “honeymoon” effect of her short tenure to date. That “honeymoon” was starting to end, however, since even before this VP nomination. Questions had already been raised by Alaskans about Palin and her professionalism and judgment. Topics that were already newsworthy concerns even before this selection include: unprofessional and disrespectful talk show behavior, rocky relationships with other elected women in government, and actions against government employees based on personal vendettas. However, most people were still giving her the benefit of the doubt, or, having been so busy living and working, they had paid little serious attention to state government or to Sarah. Plus, of course, when state coffers are overflowing and both permanent fund and energy assistance checks are in the mail (totaling over $3000 per person), constituent approval is understandable.

I do not ever want to be for or against a candidate simply because of age, race, religion, or gender. I do not want to vote for a candidate simply because I can “relate” to him/her. I can relate to many of the parents of my children’s friends. I can relate to women who have been soccer moms, hockey moms, homework moms, PTA moms, orchestra moms,…… as I have been. I can relate to the women in my thirteen year old book group. I can relate to people who enjoy singing, and dancing, and music. I can relate to my coworkers and colleagues. I can relate to these people in my life, but I don’t want to select any of them as my vice-president or president simply because I can “relate” to them. So far Sarah has not let me know what she truly thinks and believes about important issues. During her speeches, she simply replays what she said at her convention speech. I can only assume that she wants my vote based on gender, her religious views, her less than honest portrayal of her accomplishments as small town mayor and governor of a state with a small population, and because she can deliver caustic jabs at her opponents.

Despite her assertion that she is for honest and transparent government, she is apparently not willing to be transparent as a vice-presidential nominee. She has not yet answered any serious queries by the press so that I can get to know more about her other than Alaskan issues and “scandals”, her family matters, as well as her views on abortion, sex education and contraception. I want her to answer serious questions so that I can learn her views on important issues and about why she believes she is prepared for this position. The fact that she has hired a lawyer in regards to “Troopergate” makes me wonder how upfront she wants to be with this ethics investigation. Or, does she just want to stall this inquiry until after the election?

I want any candidate I vote for to be one of the best thinkers and decision-makers our country has to offer. I want them to be someone who can be respectful, who can unify, who can consider all sides of an issue, who can listen, who can evaluate, who can learn from the past. I want a candidate who can be respected both from within our country and from without. I now know that Sarah went to five colleges and then graduated with a degree in journalism and a minor in political science. I would like to know more about her background as a serious student and a deep thinker. If her grades were good or if she participated in university level organizations, this would be one way for me to know about her intellect. I have not yet seen a release of her GPA and most colleges where she attended can’t remember much about her. I want to hear her speak intelligently and “off the cuff” on many issues before I know whether she has the intellect for national office.

So far, most of her comments and her demeanor in the national spotlight have been sarcastic and divisive. This is not what I want in a national leader. She has been praised for becoming McCain’s “pit bull” and talking tough. But you know, if she can talk tough, she needs to truly be tough. Why isn’t she talking to the press on her own? Why is she able to dish it out yet is afraid to take it? The fact that McCain’s campaign says she needs to get ready to talk to the press, that she needs to prepare, and that the press needs to treat her with “deference” only shows me that she’s not ready to be on the national stage on her own. This is not what I want in my vice-president or possible president. She needs to be ready to face some truly formidable characters in many different regions of the world, with very high stakes at risk. How can she be ready for those sorts of confrontations if she can’t even “face” her own country’s press? How can she say she is for transparency in government if she refuses to open herself up to the press? Whether or not she has been under scrutiny for her personal life, she can’t hide from the press. She accepted this scrutiny when she accepted the nomination. Believe me, even more intense scrutiny comes with the job, even more than when interviewing for the job. How can I continue to interview her for this job, which is what I believe a campaign is about, if she won’t even answer my questions via “the press”? If she is elected, will she also feel that she has no obligation to speak with the press? Scary thought. As a woman, I want a female candidate to believe in herself and to feel confident and comfortable talking to the press. She is letting the McCain campaign treat her as a “fragile flower” even as they use her as their “pitbull”. A strong and confident woman would insist on talking to the press for herself. If she can’t handle this scrutiny, or this pressure, what will she do in a national crisis?

The more I learn about Sarah Pallin, the more I believe that she has not put “Country First” when she accepted this nomination. Sarah has not been honest about her accomplishments. She has not been realistic about her educational preparation. She has not been realistic or transparent about her knowledge and preparation for dealing with the national economy. She has not been realistic or transparent about her knowledge and preparation for dealing with world affairs. She is not ready to face her own country’s press much less world leaders and the world press. She is not prepared for this important national and world position and SHE SHOULD KNOW THIS! Is she flattered by the nomination and unable to see beyond her ego that she is unqualified? Is she complicit in realizing that she is not qualified yet is simply being used as bait for the religiously conservative fundamental and female votes? My conclusion is that Sarah is in this for Sarah. She’s willing to sell our country out for the glory of the nomination and for the chance at being a Republican window dressing. She won’t be getting my vote!

First, I really dont believe that McSame/SP will win..altho everyone needs to vote and not get compliant cause they will win if that happens…fight fight fight…keep goin all!!!!!!!!!

I am grateful tho in a weird way that Palin was picked…I dont remember Alaska getting as much attention. And from what I have been learning since SP was named the nominee Alaska has been grately (sp) ignored on so many fronts….I guess i have been realizing it since i started reading here but then that article i just read from one of the links here about just the global warming/environmental issues with SP and the hardships on all living beings , it hit me straight in the face that every American can use this opportunity to “remember” Alaska after the election. I know I will continue to make a commitment to come to this blog after the elections to keep up with whats going on there.
Just a thought
Thanks
*****sorry for typos or if i ramble, just a habit 😉

Thank you Fireweed for that most eloquent and excellent letter. Sums things up beautifully. This needs to be seen by more than us here.

“I do not ever want to be for or against a candidate simply because of age, race, religion, or gender. I can relate to these people in my life, but I don’t want to select any of them as my vice-president or president simply because I can “relate” to them.”

AMEN!

I will point out Sarah…that I have followed a right-wing blog of a “friend” of mine for several years, and compared to some of the attacks he has put out over the years (and currently), ours are not any worse. But, I dare say the reason he has “our” vision, is because he is not like them….that’s why we’re here…for a different vision!

Speaking for myself only Deb, I wish it was funny.

Al Franken vs Norm Coleman in November. The carpetbagger who grew up here but couldn’t wait to get away (I knew him back in the day) vs the carpetbagger whose lived here long enough to switch parties.

What a choice.

Thank you pwalsh for the link to fivethirtyeight.com – very interesting site that I now have bookmarked. I absolutely have to surround myself with the positive, action oriented posts. I appreciate the perspective of our past mistakes and the whole respect thing, and I will consider that in my conversations 🙂 Definately it needs to be there in letters to the editor, comments on news shows and the like. Venting is good, but I could be a little more discreet. This is such a helpful blog. I find myself saying the serenity prayer lately.

An article that will calm your fears!

Maybe the polls are wrong! Maybe the rise in McCain’s polls are temporary and only a pushback from the undecided in response to all the back and forth bitterness. Push too hard and you push away.

Anyway, this article will give you good cheer!

Deb from Seattle

Dear Fireweed,
Thanks so much for your candid feelings about Palin. It is a heartfelt comment about what many of us really feel about what we want in a VP.

Dear Deb,
I respectfully disagree about the comment you posted: “The problem in my view is less Mr Obama and more the attitudes of the claque of official and unofficial supporters that surrounds him.” This is just another right wing method of cutting people off and making us feel guilty about having any feelings at all. It ALL needs to be out there. The Republicans will be ruthless and vindictive in their efforts to continue this destructive path we are on. And the radical fundamentalists are often nothing better than terrorists and biggots themselves. They have no mercy for US.

I just want to scream at the media and to the public. Who the hell is running for president. Sarah Palin or John McCain. Why is the press not blacking out the McCain campaign. They are giving everyone their a** to kiss and everyone is taking it.

I heard on my local news a few minutes agos that the McCain campaign has nixed the idea of her campaigning alone. That’s because John McCain won’t get a crowd and they can’t have that.

Everyone here that’s an Obama supporter please write them and call them asking them to strike back. He still has to stay above the fray like he always has but the has to fight back. He needs to call John McCain top the of the ticket.

To Quiet Advocate:

Regarding the 62% cut for special education. I, too, have recited that accusation.

I couldn’t remember where I saw it and was unsure of its validity so last weekend I decided to verify it.

Unfortunately, it is not accurate. I discovered that the cut was made by her predecessor. The first budget she made was for almost two years (or close) in the future.

But everything else did check out (firings, books, borrowing for sports complex, bridge to nowhere, etc.).

If the polls are off because they aren’t catching the younger, cell phone crowd, that’s OK for now. Maybe gives McCain false confidence. But what can we do to ensure that those youngsters (who we believe are Obama supporters) actual vote in November? Help those away at college get their absentee ballots? Any ideas?

Deb, I agree!
We live in a country of free thinkers, who have the power of free speech.
Also, if Palin was actually willing to speak to the press, this might not be such a huge issue. I honestly can’t figure out how SO many can back her, when she hasn’t told us very much about herself, at all. We haven’t seen her react to off the cuff questions. How is she going to respond during a debate? A reporter’s question? It just looks like she is hiding something.

earlier in one of these numerous threads someone discussed that we do a disservice to the democratic argument when we repeat incorrect informaion.. it makes the MP ticket able to imply that EVERYTHING we say is similarly incorrect.. so, IMHO we need to be firm, argumentative and truthful… the facts are strong enough to make our point, and make it more effectively.

So, banned books? No. But- did enquire numerous times about removing books. It is cendorship- still reprehensible. Tried to fire the librarian who disagreed with the removal.. the listener can draw the inference.. I certainly have…

We are out to talk with and influence those middle of the road, uncommited voters.. and they do not respond well to strident shrill arguments.

Just my two cents. I have a friend who is Republican… we argue all the time. She has never been a fan of McCain… she is trying to learn about SP and the issues etc. She heard on Anderson Cooper ppl saying they would never vote for Obama because he is black. That infuriated her. She said she might just vote for him to hit against that kind of racism/old workd mind set. I remained more quiet than usual.. and just told her I could certainly understand why she felt that way. She will get there. I do not need to beat her up…

And I just want to add that I continue to thoroughly enjoy this site and all of your posts.. it gives me heart when I get discouraged. And it gives me great talking points and the resolve to use them as much as I can.

Thank you all.

They are really pushing the pig comment – Drudge has it as his big headline naturally and it’s being covered on tv. I don’t know any way that this crap can be combated. It’s the same as 2000 and 2004. The Republicans led by Rove throw out one dirty attack after another. It doesn’t matter how preposterous it is, they just keep throwing and there is no possible way to keep up. Obama’s campaign winds up wildly flailing while trying to stop the incoming barbs.
This country has become a laughing stock the world over under Bush and I really believe this is the last chance to get back on track. McCain has sold his soul to the fundamentalists and if he wins (followed by President Palin) they will have solidified their grip on nation. The rest of the world will see it for what it is and move forward, leaving the US in a downward spiral of ignorance.
I’ll add, the only person who mentioned Palin’s gaff about Freddie/Fannie yesterday was KO. An important peek at her level of ignorance but why would that get mentioned – who cares about qualifications.

Deb,

It wasn’t not another Deb but me that posted that article.

And I respectfully disagree with your disagreement 😉

I know exactly how you feel…trust me. I have practically lived on this computer, sent far too many emails to undecided/McCain voters and all I’ve accomplished is to piss them off. AND ensure that they will probably NEVER objectively look at the risk Palin poses.

So, I do understand how you feel. But I also know deep within that we need to do what WORKS.

We need to TRUST that Obama’s campaign and the media will get the correct information out there. And as I see it, they are doing it.

But, every time one of us clicks on a Palin article, the source calculates that and guess what? More Palin articles because that’s what gets clicks!!! They are a business after all.

The article points out that we need to “chill” out. Trust. Stop fueling the fire that is helping her to take the limelight.

I once read (before this campaign) that whoever gets the most consistent attention, good or bad, wins elections. I don’t know if that’s true or not but I am not willing to take the chance.

Let’s see if calmer more respectful comments might be more persuasive. It IS more persuasive to you when you are the undecided is it not??? It is for me.

MSM is getting more negative. I think they are upset about her lack of availability. The press blackout might have been a mistake for the Mcsame campaign. Let’s hope so.

Let’s face it, she is the only news in the campaign right now. Nobody wants to talk about Iraq, it is a money pit and they are probably going to end up hating us if and when we ever leave. The economy is sinking slowly but only some people are feeling it.

Obama has a few more days to guage the Palin effect and decide whether a strategy effect is in place.

Fireweed,
More heartfelt thanks from those of us who have not been governed by her. It helps to get this reinforcement from Alaskan citizens. I met an Alaskan down here in suburb outside Atlanta today (young girl taking money and making appts at my hair salon). I asked her for her take and she said many Alaskans feel favorably towards Palin because of the increase in $$$ that has come back to them (from some gas-related dividend- which I am sure has been described on this blog). It went up to about $3000 (from maybe $1000 or $1500 before). So in her opinion, they like her for that. She saw that as Palin being “for the people.”

9 09 2008

MSM actually called this…..by picking McCain has made it a “culture” war, not a serious discussion over the issues facing this country. We will not win this by mocking Sarah, the other “cultures” darling…or falling into the culture war mindset. With the country in the shape that it is in, and the huge problems we face globally, we have to stay focused on the ISSUES. We are doing exactly what the architect of this fiasco WANTS us to do! We fall for the Sarah “bait” and lose an election.

I just watched AC 360 and it was about Palin’s enviromental policies. It was great she looked terrible. They spoke about the global warming issues, even McCain agrees we need to reduce carbon output in to our enviroment. She thinks man has nothing to do with our planets issues.

CNN is equating the false rumors of Obama being a Muslim to Palin banning books at the library–she only inquired about censorship and was going to fire the librarian but stopped short of that facing town resistance. Boo! That’s not the same thing. It’s not like Obama intended to become a Muslin but was thwarted and took the path of least resistance.

Rachel Maddow on MSNBC says Tucker Eschew has been added to the Palin staff. He was supposedly responsible for the slur that brought McCain down in the SC primary in 2000. –The one about him having an illegitimate black baby. McCain is really embracing this whole thing. AK: More great work. I love the last line…

Up until now, we’ve only gotten lessons in how to get fired in Palin’s world. But now, it seems, we know what it takes to move ahead

Got in a heated political discussion at work today with a very religious co-worker of mine. I’ve know him for years and he really is a nice guy, but he is a creationist and just so full of misinformation about Obama it was alarming. After he tried to convince me of Barak’s direct terrorist ties and how Barak would destroy all of the US’s weapon defense systems and leave our country defenseless I finally calmed him down enough to say, ‘Hey dude – are you happy with this economy?’ His answer – NO “Are you happy with this war that has bleed $80 billion out of our country away from our schools and our children?” He said NO. I said, “hey do you know that you will get a bigger tax cut from Obama than you get me McCain?” No he didn’t know that at all.

I also tried to explain that Pro-choice isn’t synonomous with pro-abortion. It just means take the government out of making decisions that a woman needs to make for herself. (Not sure he’s buying that one.)

Finally I said, “Why don’t you leave your religious beliefs out of politics for THIS election and vote for the country so we can stop being screwed!”

I’m not sure I got a vote for Obama but he did finally admit that he hated Bush and McCain and he proabably wouldn’t vote at all. Small victory but I’ll take it.

He doesn’t follow the news or blogs – gets all his political ‘news’ from his church and religious radio stations. And it pretty damn scary the information he is getting.

This week, I’ve now had two lifelong Republicans tell me they are voting for Obama and one creationist tell me he isn’t going to vote at all. Small victories, especially here in California but it reaffirms my hope that not everyone is a stupid as the repugs would want us to believe…

Does Gov Palin deserve deference?

If we are talking about polite respect. Yes of course.

Even if Gov Palin did sprinkle her acceptance speech with distortions of the truth. And continues to repeat them in her stump speeches.

If we are talking about submission to her judgment or opinion. No Way.

We don’t know what her judgment or opinion is because she won’t field legitimate questions.
Whatever excuses are made, the bottom line is that Gov Palin has accepted the nomination of VP candidate. Questions are being asked and no answers are forthcoming, not to the media and not even to the public.

I suggest that Gov Palin does not understand the deference she should have towards the public.

Hey guys,
I have stopped looking a polls and have been tracking the trend markets. I’ve been
using http://www.intrade.com. They are based on trends that people actually are putting money on just like any other market. Anyway do the research and it is showing that the trends markets tend to be more accurate than polling because it is not based on partisanship. Just numbers, At last checked a few minutes ago it has Obama up at 53.0 to McCain 46. It flunctuates all day but consistently it has leaned more toward Obama.

Also, I mentioned this last night too, as I have noticed some of you are saying. The more energy put into Palin the more you attract what you don’t want. I’ve seen it happen too many times in many areas. IF you focus on what you don’t want with intensity, that is exactly what you get. Besides it makes you feel bad.

Another thing I’ve been reading same thing as others, there are some bloggers that are giving in accurate information so that by the time MSM get it, it has been discredited all together. So even the aspect which may have been correct is tossed out of the window.

This is the time for focus, calm, strategic tactics. if we continue to take our energies and continue to get the word out we will feel much better and allow the rest to come out as it will.

Got it covered, I hope. Sent Clive this email

In a perfect world, your comments would be spot on. Alas, in America today, as before, there are stark undercurrents. While few would admit it, the race issue is on everyone’s mind.

We, and our four children will vote for the Obama/Biden ticket. Our neighbor, a southern male, cannot bring himself to do so, even though his wife will. My 85 year old Northern mother will not, my other neighbor, an 86 year old Southern woman will.

The reality is that race is an issue. Fine. I accept that. If you tell me that you cannot vote for Obama because he is black, then I will accept that and go off and vote for him myself anyway. No harm, no foul.

My visceral problem with Republicans in America is that they cannot be so honest: instead of admitting to their racism or other predjudices (mainly, their belief that most of us exist to serve their MANY needs), they attempt to destroy character. This is not politics, this is a SIN. To denegrate a man’s life work by sneeringly stating that he was a community organizer has prompted this response:

Jesus was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor.

Further, the only time Republicans admit the “great unwashed” even exist is when they trot them to the polls every four years by capitalizing on their fears, while doing nothing to address their daily concerns and needs. Just look at poor fishing vilages in Alaska that have no running water or sewer facilitiesd.

The main factor that you fail to name is the evangelical vote. They, and Sarah Palin, believe this is their mission from God. I believe that suicide bombers from the Middle East think that, too.

None of us on this earth can afford to have rulers who are myopic, regardless of the myopia envisioned. We need solution makers. McCain is not one of them.

About the race thing…I know…my Aunt, a lifelong Democrat all of a sudden has a problem with Obama’s stance on abortion. Huh??? She’s a life-long Democrat (and in her 70’s…so that’s a long time)!

There’s nothing we can do about that though.

My mom and dad, both in their 70’s and Independent, were Hillary supporters but now are voting for Obama. But his brother and his wife are not. And it is because of race. Go figure.

Divatalk said:

Then the converse must be true. Seems to be the theory of “The Secret.”

I want an administration that has a vision for America that is inclusive. I want a president that cares about the economy, not only the dollars earned by the rich. I want an executive branch that doesn’t rush to war, and that takes care of our soldiers when we have to go to war. I want a Supreme Court that interprets the Constitution according to society’s standards. (Strict constructionists would, by definition, have to ignore women and blacks. They had no rights when the Constitution was written.)

I really enjoy this community, and have since I stumbled upon it when the rumors of Sarah and Trig surfaced. It was here that I learned Trig is her son. I have tried to participate in a respectful manner. So why, oh why couldn’t someone have given me the heads up on Larry King’s guest Congresswoman Bachman from Minnesota? She actually said, and I’m paraphrasing, that her constituents, young and old, have told her that Sarah seems like a lot of fun. FUN? Really? That’s what the good people of Minnesota want in a VP? Just invite her to a girls’ night out and keep her out of the White House!

*I* understand that this election is about issues, but for a large segment of the population it goes back to “can I enjoy a beer with this person?”

So, while I would gladly focus on the issues, I am not afforded that luxury. When someone tells me they are voting Palin because she seems friendly, I have to bring up her sarcasm. I have to point out that it’s not friendly to force a pregnant woman to have a baby when she currently has the right to terminate that pregnancy. I have to remind them that it isn’t nice to lie to people and say you didn’t want a bridge when you campaigned for it. A friend wouldn’t lie to you and Sarah has.

Divatalk,

If it seems like I was challenging you, I apologize. I plead exhaustion. I enjoy your posts. You contribute mightily to this forum. I cited one sentence from your post and it may appear that I mocked you. That was surely not my intent.

Cassie, YES, the suicide (actually homicide) bombers believe they are doing G-d’s work. And as they do, they kill thousands of innocents. What Palin said about our troops being on a task from G-d is perilously close to what the fundamentalist terrorists say.

There is no way to persuade evangelicals that Palin is wrong. She was sent by G-d. I wouldn’t waste my energy trying to discuss issues with them. Ditto for racists. Those are thoughts that are so deeply engrained that it’s a lost cause.

Take heart, folks. Lots of people in my world are responding in ways I never would have imagined. Of course, my world isn’t representative of the nation at large, but when a corporate attorney who is focused on dollars is taking off a week to work on behalf of Obama, I have hope. YES WE CAN.

Regarding the library issue, the 2006 vetting document states the following:

Palin Asked City Librarian About Censoring Books, Insisted It Was “Rhetorical.” In 1996,
according to the Frontiersman, Wasilla’s library director Mary Ellen “Emmons said Palin asked her
outright if she could live with censorship of library books.” Emmons said, “This is different than a normal
book-selection procedure or a book-challenge policy…She was asking me how I would deal with her
saying a book can’t be in the library.” Palin said in response, “Many issues were discussed, both
rhetorical and realistic in nature.” [Frontiersman, 12/18/96]

Director Mary Ellen Emmons. The Frontiersman wrote, “After news of the of the dismissals broke
Thursday night, Palin said she never meant to fire Stambaugh and Emmons. ‘It was an intent to terminate
letter to discuss my intent to terminate them or for them to submit resignations.’” Palin wrote in her letter,
“I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts to govern the city of Wasilla.” [Frontiersman, 2/5/97]

• Palin Rehired Library Director after Cementing Her Support. The Frontiersman wrote, “Palin
said she cemented Emmons’ support Friday afternoon for her new plan to join the library and
museum departments and felt like she could continue to work with Emmons. Her plan will create
more efficiency within the departments, Palin said, making better use of the public’s money.”
[Frontiersman, 2/5/97]

Palin Fired Librarian for Not Supporting Her, Later Rehired Her After Assurances of Support. In
1997, Palin fired the Wasilla city librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons. Palin delivered a letter to Emmons and
the police chief saying, ‘‘I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts to govern the city of Wasilla.
Therefore I intend to terminate your employment.” Palin later said she had received assurances from
Emmons that she had her support. The Anchorage Daily News wrote, “Palin said she asked Emmons if
she would support efforts to merge the library and museum operations. Emmons said she would,
according to Palin.” Emmons had been the city’s library director for seven years. [Anchorage Daily News,

from vetting document regarding library censorship:

Correct, Rachel Maddow is a Stanford grad and a Rhodes Scholar, and only 35 years old. Here is an excerpt from an excellent article on her (July 3 2008):

Maddow grew up in the Bay Area; she came out just before college in 1990 and became an AIDS activist at the epicenter of the epidemic. She earned a degree in public policy from Stanford before beginning work with ACT UP and the AIDS Legal Referral Panel. But Maddow had trouble breaking into treatment activism, which was then the rock-star world of AIDS policy. “It was boys’ land,” she says. “I knew like two women total who were doing treatment activism. And I didn’t totally get it. I’m not like Barbie–‘Math is hard!’–but it was a techie world, and I didn’t feel like I could be all that helpful.”

What she discovered instead was the nexus of the radical prison reform movement of the ’70s and modern AIDS activism. It was an area where Maddow felt progress–like allowing secure hospices to take dying prisoners–was possible. “Dying behind bars?” she says fourteen years later. “Wicked expensive. And wicked stupid. And also mean. So let’s make the hospices get what they want and also do the right thing!”

In 1995 Maddow traveled as a Rhodes scholar to Oxford, where she began a doctorate in political science, focusing on the intersection of the AIDS and prison movements. She moved back to the United States to finish her dissertation, crashing with friends in Western Massachusetts. “I wanted to live somewhere where I’d be unhappy,” she explains. “And I have no interest in New England, hate winter, don’t like the country, not fond of animals.” More than a decade later, Maddow still divides her time between her home in Northampton, Massachusetts, and an apartment in Greenwich Village, both of which she shares with her girlfriend, artist Susan Mikula. The couple have been together for almost ten years, and Maddow calls their relationship “my proudest accomplishment.”

Palmdale,

Thanks for the input. I now know which paper I’ll go for.

For others who might be from NJ, I’m going to send mine to the Courier-News and in two weeks I’ll send it to the Recorder Newspapers. It would be great if someone else could hit the Star-Ledger that would be great – I’m persona non grata there since calling out one of their columnists on another matter.

I love the idea of a Yahoo group. Can we do that AKM?

Where do they come from? And why do the come? It’s like a pretend land and unfortunately we have to play the game.

This video has more validity than the politicians are offering and I think I’d be more compelled to hear what’s said here… Check it out….

Just so you know, not everyone in Wasilla or Alaska supports Palin, despite how the press is making it look that way. http://ellemay.wordpress.com/2008/09/07/wasillans-for-obama/

oh please

Oh please, the promotion was in the works for a long time, it didn’t happen over night and it certainly wasn’t because of what he was saying to the media.

Come on people, use some common sense here.

This is unbelievable! Is she perfect. No one is. But I am amazed at the absolute hypocrisy of the so called “liberal press”. Finally the world has a viable female leader and you all want to destroy her because she doesn’t kill babies, loves her husband, love God, and horror of horrors, loves Jesus. One Day all of you will find out the truth. But by then it will be too late.

Kudos to you Mainiac for calling the station….MSM needs to get their confidence & interviewing skills back. Seems like they throw these zingers out & that obsequious McCain smiles his smary smile & give these vacuous answers & it’s on to the next question.

Guess Old Hilary was right ” it’s all a right wing conspiracy against my husband”….except this time it isn’t Bill it’s the whole fricking country.
