Thanks too, AKM, I was just at the browsing Mudflats store link, love the selection of books and everything, just in time for holiday shopping.
For those who are unaware, Teach and Signkid are also asking for postcards to be sent to them. The address (a PO Box) can be found at the sign watch site. With all this publicity and attention, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a book come out of it.
I’m sending them a postcard that was made from a painting done by one of our grand-daughters. Her painting was chosen when she was in third grade (she’s now in 7th) to be placed on the cover of the North Little Rock (Arkansas) Centennial celebration program. She was presented with a prize at the opening ceremony by Mary Steenburgen (a NLR native).
A couple of years later, she was contacted by the mayor’s office for further recognition. Seems that a Chief Warrent Officer with the Ark. Army National Guard received a package from his family while he was in Iraq. They had included a copy of the centennial program and he liked the cover picture so much that he hung it on the wall of his office in Iraq and resolved to meet the young artist upon his return. The mayor’s office arranged for a small ceremony at her school where she was able to present the officer with a framed print of the painting and he gave her his Army beret. The mayor also presented her with a plaque declaring that day as ‘her name’ Day.
We’re sending a postcard copy of the painting to the Signfamily as an yet another example of how something can take on a life of its own and touch people in many unknown ways.
I found Mudflats on Aug. 29, the day McCain announced Palin as his running mate. I have never before followed a blog, but just like the rest of you, I’ve become addicted and return here daily for a little dose of sanity and intelligence. I also joined in on the sign watch when it first went up, and while I’ve not joined the chat (it moves way too fast for me), I check in on it several times a day. It has provided our family with more enjoyment and laughter than I can begin to describe!

I try to understand the candidates and their positions. Since McCain is 72 a clear understanding of Sarah Palin’s views is critical to deciding who to vote for.
1. Since Palin believes that if you are not Christian you are evil. Since I am not Christian (actually I am not affiliated with any religion) will I be deported?
2. I view of Palin charging the victim for rape kits am I to assume that victims of crime will be charged for the cost of the court and the salary of the police and the investigation costs and the district attorney’s salary? Charging the victims for prosecuting the criminals would help clear the court calendar.
3. In view of Sarah Palin’s past ethical lapses who shall pay for the special investigations into her actions?
4. In view of her penchant for hiring friends and family for government posts should I change my name to Palin or how can I get on the friends list?
5. In view of the First Dude taking over some of the functions of her office should we pay him a salary and pay his expenses? Who would the First Dude be accountable to since he would not have been elected nor would he be officially appointed and his office would not exist.?
6. In view of Palin having to hire an executive to manage the mundane taskes of her mayoral office can we expect her to hire an executive administrator to manage her national office? Again, who would this administrator be accountable to?
7. In view of Plain’s past dalliances with taxpayer money would it be wrong to ask her to promise to manage the taxpayer’s funds with fiscal restraint?
8. In view of Plain’s hunting practices would she expect to use military helicopters and military hardware for hunting? Could we make her exclude nuclear weapons for her hunting?
9. In view of the reports on the actions of her family and future son-in-law would the taxpayers still have to fund the ‘Just Say No” and the “Abstinence” campaigns?
10. In view of Palin’s fleeting acquaintance with the truth would she set up a new Cabinet Post? It could be called the Department Of The Truth As Seen By Sarah Palin.

Thanks Bea for the penguin debate video. Hoping that I’ll be able to fully appreciate it (laugh hysterically) once the election is over. I’m having a hard time finding the humor these days… Had my big angst-dump a few weeks ago on a thread a long way back about the divisiveness that entered the US big picture — it happened the moment that Bible Spice gave her little hate/acceptance speech at the RNC, and the recent attacks were just an escalation, the overt hateful rhetoric finally that finally compelled the MSM to speak out about this issue. Going door to door and being abused by fellow Alaskans for having the audacity to volunteer for Obama brought that home to me weeks ago. Anyway, will try not to give in to the sadness about that again, trying to use it in positive ways, strengthening my commitment to helping out the cause.

Wow, thanks. I’ve never been to that site before. But, no, I didn’t see anything related to her painting there. I pulled out a copy of our newspaper that carried the story and pic, but then couldn’t find it on their website either.
Yes, NLR is a nice town. We’re just across the Arkansas River from Little Rock but we still have the feel of a small town. We moved here from western Arkansas about 12 years ago for my hubby’s job. It was tough at first. My roots were very deep there and my first grandbaby (the little artist) had just been born. But now the ‘kids’ live here too and I’m a very happy grandma!
Okay, back to this mission. I am having a disc made with the painting in a jpg and pdf format. Once I have that in hand maybe I can get one of the young’uns to show me how to send it.

Rush tried to push and prompt her into more typical hate messaging that has reflected Sarah’s rally speeches up until this weekend. The “new” SP stayed away from the not-one-of-us/terrorist/racist connect-the-dots game but interjected her main talking points.
I’m simplifying:
– ACORN very bad and Obama connected to ACORN (Faux News/Drudge on the same bandwagon for quite a while)
– Taxes very bad in down economy, Obama wants to raise your taxes and mess up economy.
– Our crowds good hardworking people (cough, cough…not the hate mongers McSame/Failin have incited)
So maybe this is a precusor to the debates and the messaging of the day from McCain?
In the end, I give her points for moving away from spreading the hate/racist message, though she loses for points for ending the call with these supportive words for the hate monger himself, Rush: “we won’t let you down” and “we’ll keep listening”.

I live in Sonoma, CA. I got my Obama yard sign stolen just days after I put it up….that was months ago. I was going to buy another one, but can’t afford the $10 right now. We came up with several interesting ideas like putting poison oak on the sign….dismissed that because a kid or dog might rub against it. Then we thought about those smoke bombs they put in bank money. Anyway…..we put a sticker on the front window. If I owned my house I would’ve painted my garage door with the Obama logo.

Not sure the Acorn thing is going to hold out much longer, saw on Faux a half hour or so ago (don’t ask – take what I can get in UK) some bloke called Trace?, something like that, going on about Acorn to an Obama surrogate, then she suddenly held up a big picture of McCain WITH Acorn and more or less told him to stick it where the sun don’t shine. Twas funny, and left him red faced and speechless.

Bradley effect was 25 years ago. Some changes since then, more than in others. No doubt race will play a part for some people. Like maybe more black people turning out to vote. And maybe white people voting for Obama on the QT so as not to be socially castigated.

Teach Kids and Sign Kid are great people. I’ve wasted many hours on that site. They deserve a lot of credit for sharing their space, time and lives with a community of sign watchers from around the world.
Wow. There is so much happening here and I just don’t have time to check out all of the links that are included. Something’s got to give. There’s still a few years on the mortgage, so I guess I’ll start with tennis, theatre, grocery shopping, laundry, petsitting and visits with family members. If it gets much worse, I may have to ask to work only part-time–and trade in the car for a moped.

Yes, I’d like to second PDX on this. There is a “reverse” Bradley effect this year. When I canvassed last month in eastern PA, several lifelong GOPers told me this at their front door and asked me not to tell their neighbors….

I “feel” your paranoia, but here’s another thought I had as i read your post: What if the Personnel Board deliberately selected a heavy-hitter Democratic attorney **because** they were so PO’d at La Palin?
I could see a group of frustrated, disgusted public servants saying to themselves, “Okay, Sweet Pea, we’ll give you what you’ve asked for:
“1) You and your handlers think you want to use us to try to avoid repercussions for a bi-partisan legislative investigation;
“2) Then you think you can scam the courts by requesting that “our” investigation be rejected;
“3) The court says too bad, so sad, be careful what you ask for;
“4) You preempt our investigation by telling the world you’ve exonerated yourself;
“5) So, therefore, sweetie, we’ll show the world that we **are** bipartisan and have integrity, by hiring a Democratic “pitbull” attorney to conduct the investigation that you yourself requested.
“6) That way, we cover our behinds in the eyes of the world, and can only point back to our great concern that you got the truly fair investigation you demanded. After all, how were we to know there would be so much there to discover? I don’t know, fawnskin… There’s certainly plenty of reason to feel paranoid, but if someone handed me — on a silver platter, mind you — a way to skewer someone who had treated my fellow government employees and the personnel process with such contempt, I’d be inclined to take them up on the invitation.

On Twitter, Rick has over 24,000 following him, much like myspace friends. So when you send a tweet, it’s a crap shoot he picks it.

Their message that they were upset the piece was going to air was trying to compare it to doing a piece of Barack’s religion. AIP is not a religion. This is more recent activity as Todd only left the group recently, but it compares to more the Ayre story — terrorists. McCain’s camp didn’t get that right so when they boo-hoo on an interview, probably on FOX, they will probably try to downplay it as a religious sect. Watch now, they will probably jump on the Rev Wright issue in their way of comparison.

fivethirtyeight.com has a bunch of stuff analyzing the Bradley effect and they seem to think its impact will be negligible under the current circumstances. And even if it shaves a few points from Obama, in most states that he needs to win he’s got a big cushion by now.

I think the Bradley effect has been pretty debunked. Also an interesting statistic that I heard today was that Obama actually did better than the polls predicted in the primaries, meaning more people voted for Obama then the polls indicated.
Also, remember, these polls are very detailed and concise. There are many different polling organizations using all kinds of criterias and all different samples. Some polls are aggregates of many polls others are their own polls, but all polls show Obama with a significant lead right now.
The polling in this Presidential election is a lot more sophistricated than it was 25 years ago when Bradley ran.
I personally think, barring any major October Surprise, we will see the exact opposite effect of the Bradley Effect – more voters will vote for Obama than they said, especially Republicans.
I think years from now they will be talking about this election and referencing “The Obama Effect”.

Hello again! I know we’re on the same side (Obama’s!). But I’m not sure what your point is. Please clarify whenever you have a minute.
Are you saying that McCain will now compare Ayers to the AIP? Ayers was eventually funded by major GOP donors (the Annenbergs, no less!). There’s a new piece about that link (GOP to Ayers) today on HuffPo or DailyKos. Both the Ayers and Wright stories have had all the play in the world, and the GOP’s internal polling shows that neither have been effective against the Democratic ticket.
But I don’t think McCain’s camp knew about Palin and the AIP. Or if they did, they never thought Americans would care…

Well, I could have used a camera. I also put up a home-made printed sign, on a tree, up a steep embankment on my road frontage – put it up on Sunday afternoon and noticed this a.m. that it was gone. I was hoping that making a thief climb a steep embankment and balance him/herself while trying to pull the sign down, would cause him/her to fall but I guess it didn’t happen.

I, too, am working on all Republican friends and associates, I have used an entire print cartridge printing out articles this site has linked me to, I try to make people read them, would like to think it helps change peoples minds. I live in a very red part of the FL Panhandle, very frustrating, but I have Mudflats to get me through (also). My Palin Baby Name Generator name was Crust Scramble, already in use by a regular poster (who also could speakfor me most of the time) so I made up my own sans the Palin part, I don’t want to be a Palin!

All you signwatchers – I ran into a friends of a friend who have put an Obama sign in their yard, in this here RED state no less – was disheartened to hear that the other day they found a skull and crossbones painted on the Obama sign in their front yard. They called the sheriff out…

Last week someone was discreetly trying to tell us that Mrs Palin didn’t have any friends left back home. The unanimous vote to release the report may have been an indication of that.
Came on this thread to congratulate Preston, he’s has done a great job with his yard.
Now I have to find the CNN report on the AIP! Can’t believe McCain’s campaign sends letters saying they’re not happy, it’s so childish.
Still at work here, can’t wait to get home to see the CNN piece. As for Bradley effect, I’m much more worried about false polling numbers being falsely inflated toward Obama? What if it’s rigged in a way to keep Democrats feeling safe enough not to vote…and scary enough that all Republicans will be out in force?
Worried a bit as just met yet another SP and McPow lover. She hates McPOW”s Health Care Plan but says it’s not an issue for her. The issues don’t matter because it’s experience that counts. When she started in about how great Sarah is I pointed out the ethics issue. She claimed she hadn’t heard about it. Still, she doesn’t want the country going to those damn liberals and their horrible family values. When I said I couldn’t disagree with her more she said, “I just don’t think the country is ready to elect a black man.”
