Supreme Court Refuses to Block Troopergate Investigation!

9 10 2008

(AKMuckraker slumps down in the chair with a giant exhale of breath, immediately followed by a rush of feel-good brain chemicals)

OK, I kept telling myself that I wasn’t worried.  I trust the Alaska Supreme Court.  I have lawyer friends who told me there was nothing to worry about.  And I very convincingly told others I wasn’t worried.  But after hearing the good news, I realize that….yes….I was worried.

Whew.

The Alaska Supreme Court today rejected an attempt by a group of six Republican legislators to shut down the Legislature’s investigation of Gov. Sarah Palin.

The ruling means that Steve Branchflower, the investigator hired by the Legislative Council, will release his report as scheduled on Friday.

Read the ruling HERE.

An opinion from the court will follow.

This is one hurdle overcome, but remember, the Legislative Council still needs to vote to release the results of the report to the public.  So if you’re emailing those Legislators, keep it coming.  Visit Alaskans for Truth for details and emails.

Emails are good, but phone calls are MUCH MUCH better. 1 phone call is worth many many emails. So call the legislators and leave a message. Peple can call all night. Let all the legislators arrive tomorrow morning with no room left in their mailbox. This is the last time. They meet tomorrow morning.
Or even better, if you have a FAX, fax them your message. Saves room for those people who don’t have FAX on the message machine.

But let’s leave Trig out of it. As best I can tell, the worst youc an say about SP & TP on that issue is that they protected their daughter by claiming her child as their own and raising it in their family. Happened before. Happens lots. I don’t like SP, but I can’t find fault on this one. not even if she is lying.

This is GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really, I knew also this would happen. As far as Baby Trig goes, I thought we were not supposed to talk about that here? But I will add in quickly that her story makes no sense and I am sure also that baby is not hers.
This woman is dangerous and she must must be stopped!! I am sure she plans on running for President next time around. Can you imagine?
What has stunned me the most is watching her on the campaign trail and how she apparently ENJOYS inciting the anger and hatred in the crowds. She is sick.

I pray pray pray the truth is going to win here. For once! How can people be so ignorant that they actually support Palin and McCain? My brain just can’t comprehend it. Call me an “elite” liberal if you want. I thought it was a good thing to go to good schools and be smart, but I guess not to these people….

This does not surprise me. Given the separation of powers, given that this was a viable Legislative Commission- the Court HAD to agree or risk overstepping their bounds.

Now, we shall see if there is any meat in that report… after all- it could absolve the governor- i.e. tempest in a teapot…

Is there a trick to getting comments posted on this blog? I would love to join in the conversation. On at least three occasions in recent days I’ve tried to post and been ignored. Am I in a dust bin out in space somewhere?

Help. Please Help~!

You think she will still be in politics by then ? Even so, Palin against the incumbent President Barack Obama would be great, he might get ALL 538 electoral votes if she ran against him !!!

Looking ahead to 2016 though, I like the Democratic ticket of Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Rachel Maddow !

Lara.. I have to disagree. Palin paraded trig around like a trophy after her debate, it was a vile, ugly display, especially after she pawned him off on her young daughter who tried valiently but was having problems holding him. Yet, she was more worried about gladhanding her pals instead of being a concerned mom.

Betcha not all ‘down-home’ women love Sarah Palin
By ROSANNE HEMOND

I CAN honestly speak from the experience of a woman who is a wife and a mother who also has been a working mother for most of her married life.

“Down home,” “Joe Six pack,” “hockey mom,” “gotcha,” “betcha,” “maverick” – what naive terms used by someone seeking second seat to the most powerful person in America. I cannot begin to describe how offensive I find Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Well, yes, I can. And I shall.

First, she wants to present herself as being the consummate working mother to appeal to all women.

This offends me in so many ways. When I decided to have children I opened my arms to my babies, regardless of health, as have all the women I know. That she did not abort or give away her son with Down syndrome tells me that she is not totally self-serving, but this does not make her special; it makes her a mother.

But as a mother, I felt then and now that the first and most critical responsibility as a parent is to be there to raise that child, to make my family my priority. She understands all about special-needs children, and to some degree, so do I. The first rule of parenting is to be there. Mrs. Palin promotes herself as everyone’s ideal of a mother, yet she obviously cares more about her career than her family or she would not have dragged her children into the limelight, especially her pregnant daughter. She would have done what most mothers’ instincts would dictate: protect her family first and foremost.

As governor of Alaska, she can do that. She can be home and be there for her children. As a political candidate for vice president, she and her husband are continually on the road. Who is there for that baby, and who is there helping her daughter through a deeply personal situation? The teenager is there, living in the public eye.

Mrs. Palin keeps saying that her daughter is going to get married. Why? To protect whose image? The father is 18. They are just children. While I respect Barack Obama for saying that the family is off limits in the campaign, as a voter, it is not off limits to me.

I was not a hockey mom. But I’ve been a baseball mom and a swimming mom and a theater mom and a band mom and working mom, as well as a wife. I also was a teacher and, afterward, ran two successful businesses, one a large child-care center, and the other a travel agency. None of the above would qualify me for political office.

I will certainly give her credit. She was, let’s see, in parent-teacher organizations, so was I. She was a mayor of a small town. I come from a small town, and although I have never been in politics, I am well aware of how much power that position generates, especially when it is a part-time job. She was a business owner. I’m curious about what business she owned.

Now my husband and I are one of millions of families of retirees who are worried about myriad things. We are deeply concerned about the cost of medical care. My husband and I have already lost a portion of what was his automotive pension package. Our investments are bottoming out. I live in fear that our teenage grandsons may end up going to war. I worry about my children being able to support their families and themselves.

Under previous administrations, we have had the good fortune of traveling to many parts of the world and we have friends in Europe. With the experience of extensive travel and ongoing conversation with people from other countries, I guess in the context of international communication, this means I have more experience than Mrs. Palin.

My degree is in education, hers in journalism. I suspect we are almost equals in our government preparation.

As for her being governor of Alaska, I will give her the benefit of the doubt. She may be the best governor Alaska has ever had. So that’s where she should stay.

People who are responding to her social conservativism must wake up and realize this self-described maverick’s hypocrisy. She can talk down to people and make them feel that she is just like their neighbor, not putting on airs, but her money is not where her “good-old girl” mouth is. She insults our intelligence with her “down home” rhetoric, but perhaps this is just her inability to communicate on a higher intellectual level.

How can anyone begin to imagine Mrs. Palin dealing with Vladimir Putin and the Russian increase in aggression? Maybe she could float a note across the Bering Strait from Alaska, saying, “Now Mr. Putin, that’s not nice.”

Why, considering the long history of nuclear situations, can she not be taught to pronounce “nuclear”? And all the “betchas” and “Joe Six-pack” idioms will certainly go a long way toward destroying any possibility of global acceptance of her intelligent leadership. We need a leader. We need a communicator.

We must understand that although we are voting for president, there have been too many times when the vice president has needed to take over the job. And those people who fall back on the idea that we are voting only for a president are frighteningly naive. It is a serious package deal and both candidates are equally important.

I like that she is gutsy, pretty, and presents herself well. She means well too – I think. But, electing her to a position that could result in her running a country at war, suffering the worst economic crisis since the Depression and the loss of respect from allies, and dealing with leaders of other countries is tantamount to going into an operating room and finding out that your surgeon just finished a two-month course in basic pre-med.

She has been coached, but she cannot hide her naivete and lack of knowledge. When she doesn’t have an answer, she simply refuses to do so. She did this a number of times in the vice presidential debate.

During the debate, Mrs. Palin scolded Joe Biden for looking to the past. Did she miss his important comment that “past is prologue?” When we disregard the past, we are doomed to repeat it.

People must understand that if they vote for John McCain, they are voting for a ticket that could catapult an inexperienced, naive, “hockey mother” of five into the position of becoming this nation’s leader.

Remember, too many people deemed the “good old boy” George Bush qualified to run this country, and look where that “down-home” guy got us.

I just don’t get it.

With Sarah Palin dropping in the polls daily if I was her I would insist on riding in the same vehicle as John McAged. (I’m the same age as McCain so I have the right to say that.) I can see it now; McAged and staff get together and decide to shed the anchor. The next day the headlines blare “Sarah Palin killed in a mysterious plane crash. On a lighter note, my 12 yr old participated in a mock election today and voted Obama– curious as to her thoughts, I asked what she didn’t like about McCain- she said he can’t use a computer and everyone learns that in elem school. I reminded her that there were no computers back then for him to learn on and she said well, Grandma took the time to learn!

Palin set to drop puck at Philadelphia NHL game

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Sarah Palin’s next faceoff will come at center ice at an NHL arena, not at a debate.

The GOP vice presidential nominee will drop the ceremonial first puck when the Philadelphia Flyers open the regular season against the New York Rangers on Saturday. Palin, the Alaska governor and self-described “hockey mom,” will join the winner of a team promotion for the “Ultimate Hockey Mom” to drop the puck.

Last month, Palin visited a Philadelphia bar with Flyers owner Ed Snider, who has donated money to Republican presidential nominee John McCain’s campaign.

“Because of the tremendous amount of publicity she has brought to our sport, we invited the most popular hockey mom in North America to our home opener to help us get our season started,” Snider said in a team statement Wednesday. “We are very excited she has accepted our offer and we are very proud of the publicity she is generating for hockey moms and the sport of hockey.”

The team will award all hockey moms entered into the contest with a free “puck-er peach” lipstick and four tickets to a hockey game of the Flyers’ minor league affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms. The winner will appear on the ice with Palin for opening faceoff.

Wonder if this will still happen if she’s NOT the vice-presidential candidate by Saturday 🙂

I just went to Halcro’s blog and curiously saw that Palin felt safe enough to discontinue security detail for herself a few months ago. I’ll weigh in on the Trig issue. At this point I believe there has been plenty of concrete evidence as to her lack of qualifications, her connections to dubious groups, her propensity to bully and control along with the ongoing investigations into allegations of corruption and abuse of power. That, along with her record as mayor and now as Gov and her time in the spotlight since the announcement of her candidacy are plenty of fuel to hang her on.

Regardless of who Trig’s mother is, seems to be almost a non-issue to me. I really don’t care (although I admit the salacious gossip was hard to resist initially). I do care that her children seem to be trotted out at her convenience when it suits her political aims. I do care that little Trig seems handed around like a sack of potatoes and that Sarah has clearly put her ego and needs above that of her family. THAT, ‘my friends’, says far more to me than the possibility that she covered up a pregnancy for whatever reason.

We’ve got plenty to focus on that leaves her family out of the discussion.

And Baby Trig is a valid issue. Why? Easy – as long as she keeps the records under wraps, she has something to hide on this. Seriously, she is talking about special needs kids and how she could have aborted him but didn’t – only for us to find out she is the granny – and then lied to the masses about her daughter’s pregnancy? That is the person that I want one heartbeat away …

She stepped into this arena with her hot designer heels, so it’s open game. She’s in the spotlight, and we citizens of the U.S. have a right to know if any politician is lying.

Deb, I agree to keep the kids out of it sort of.

The kids are indeed innocent, but Mommy Dearest is using her kids for some percieved political advantage. She is trying to show working moms everywhere she can be a mom and work.

So, by her own exploitation of her kids, they don’t get a free pass. Remember, Trig cant read, and the younger ones aren’t likely reading mudflats, so they are insulated from the comments.

They are innnocent, I agree 100%.. But mommy dearest isnt. and she should face the consequences when they end up in a lifetime of therapy.

AKM:

I have a question. My recollection, which is often flawed, is that Branchflower was going to “present” the report to the legislature in a PUBLIC MEETING tomorrow (assuming the Court doesn’t stop the report).

Doesn’t this mean that aspects of the report will become public before the Committee votes to have the entire report released?

Are you going to have you surrogates there?

Fair comment Sheesh… one person’s “enough” information may not be anothers but I cannot disagree with your comments.

I suppose my thinking is that I truly do not care one way or the other about the parentage. But I am not a SP supporter. There are many out there who are- and who hold fast to those most fundamental of beliefs in the sanctity of family values, marriage etc. So, if their Icon of these issues (SP) is found to have lied egregiously about an affair with her husbands partner and/or the birth of a child it MIGHT be enough to give them an epiphany… or not. So for me, that is part of the reason I am curious. To see what effect it would have on the base.

AND, the medical records of ALL the candidates is fair game. It has been for a LONG LONG time, rightly or wrongly.

2 cents?? more like a nickel I suppose…

The Clean Water Initiative – a yes vote would have gone a long way in stopping Northern Dynasty from placing a large open pit gold mine at the headwaters of Bristol Bay, our biggest salmon fishery in the state.

Mining interests spent ENORMOUS amounts of money on advertising meant to confuse the public to defeat the initiative. Only a few days (whilst Todd was winging around the state in a helicopter with mining guys), Sarah came out with her face in large ads in the newspaper saying the initiative should not pass. She had just given the energy rebate out (of course with the help of the state senate) and since the public is still having an affair with her the initiative lost narrowly.

That was an ethics violation. No other governor here has done that.

I hear you on the thought that those SP supporters who are far right might find details of her alleged affair and the parentage of Trig objectionable but I’m here to tell you that when people are of strong opinion either far right or far left they will find a way to justify the actions of their esteemed choice! Might cause a very small number of supporters to look a little closer but doubtful.

As far as SP’s medical records…yep…those have yet to be seen and as the VP nominee of her party she needs to release them. I’ve always been a bit off-put having access to that kind of personal information but when we are entrusting our country to a president we need to know they are mentally and physically able to fulfill the duties.

I would like to thank AKM for bring up this issue — The Palins’ Imperfect Union — https://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/10/08/the-palins-imperfect-union/, about the GOP and their attacked dog, Sarah Palin smearing Obama with guilt by associaton with Mr. Ayers. But I don’t understand why the MSM (ABC, CBS, CNN, & NBC News) don’t follow up on Palin’s association with the Alaskan Independence Party–a group whose sole purpose is to secede from the United States. Here’s a commentary at HuffingtonPost by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about a similar issue, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-f-kennedy-jr/alaskan-independence-part_b_133261.html. It’s only fair that if the GOP are smearing Obama in this manner and the MSM spent a couple of days covering it, then they should also spend some times covering Palin’s association the AIP. We need to put more pressure on MSM so they follow up on Palin’s association with the AIP…

Someone many comments above this one noted that the people in the Bethlehem PA video are exactly why Americans have such a low standing in the world at the moment. Watching that made me sick to my stomach. There are a lot of angry people out there taking out their frustrations and anger about their own predicaments on others, their current scapegoat is the ‘commie, socialist liberal’ but you can always find racism rampant in that crowd. In my neck of the woods (AZ), the scapegoat is the ‘illegal alien stealing our jobs and accessing benefits’. I am continually amazed when I hear right wingers and even neo-cons refer to liberals as ‘hate-filled’. And I am saddened that the behavior and hatred is becoming more prevalent 😦

I agree. I think she mostly likely is Trig’s mother because there are photos of her looking pregnant (and remember Hunter Tylo won her lawsuit against Aaron Spelling for firing her when pregnant by showing up in court looking sleek and sexy when she was 7 months along), and even people who don’t particularly like her (like Anne Kilkenney) have acknowledged the baby is hers. In any case, it just really is immaterial to the actual issues about Sarah Palin and I wish people would stop focusing on it. Andrew Sullivan has become almost obsessed and it’s ridiculous. I personally think it was atrocious for her to be dragging Down syndrome infant through crowds at all hours of the night and having him come in contact with so many strangers, as these kids have problems with their immune systems. The “rugged” Alaska thing is fine, but a baby with physical problems that could lead to life-threatening infections should not be expected to be rugged. She seems to be leaving him home now, so maybe his PR role has been fulfilled.

Hope, either way, Palin is a hateful person. Right? She’s the one doing it. No one’s making her. She’s a grown woman. (I mean, she seems emotionally and intellectually at the level of a child to me, but she is 44.)

I have been watching msnbc pretty much all day (with breaks for Mudflats.) McAged has been attacking Obama all day and calling him a liar; not saying he distorts the fact-he’s a liar. I worked in many campaigns in my life and this approach works. You keep your opponent off balance and so busy answering your charges that he becomes an ineffective campaigner. Obama needs to attack more. One thing I see both campaigns doing wrong is letting the staff hold press conferences. This is dangerous; a slip of the tongue and the candidate stands to lose the election. You should never see or hear from anyone except the candidate.

2. Please please everyone, take the high road on Palin’s kids. It doesn’t matter. Worst case, she gallantly protected her daughter’s reputation. Come on – this is wasted energy and it makes us look petty and mean to even discuss it.
3. Remember that at these Republican rallies, Palin and McCain are singing to the choir. They are not converting anybody with these despicable lies and exaggerations.
4. Both McCain and Palin have made strong statements in the past about their dedication to fair and truthful campaigning, and their condemnation of personal attacks. They are hurting their own poll numbers and their own reputations, as the entire country watches their hypocrisy and dishonesty.

Well, what Friday’s report may find is that there are many other issues that need to be investigated. Remember, it was the coverup that brought down Nixon.

And income tax issues. The way Sarah and Todd played fast and loose with the truth, their power, and everything else, I would be surprised if they were honest about their taxes. She seems to think that she is above the law and will never gt caught (as do most narcissists), and she’s not very bright (sending governor emails from an unsecure yahoo account).

A salute to the Alaskan Supreme Court. This is good news, indeed.

@Divatalk Hussein: I can give you a few negatives to socialism–much higher taxes, some people using it as an excuse not to do anything (for real, not like we think people on welfare here do), and no motivation. There’s socialized healthcare in Taiwan, and she says it’s really hard because the docs try to see fifty or more patients a day. You might have to wait in line for hours just to see someone. There is no reason to do your best if you know you’re being paid the same as everyone else. Think of groupwork in school–there was always that one person who didn’t do anything because he/she knew s/he would get the same grade.

That’s why I’m a socialist capitalist. I think we need incentives to work harder and better, but I also think EVERYONE should be able to maintaitn a subsistence without it killing them. And healthcare. I am a firm believer in healthcare for all.

Yes, the NYT story provided a thorough examination of the endless intimidation and harassment of the Palins in their paranoia and exceedingly nasty abuse of power. Keep on everyone in communicating with the Legislative Council. The NYT story will begin to feed the MSM. Sweet Sarah today in Wisconsin (my home state) kept on denouncing the media (which gives her a constant platform for her demagouery). I expect the AIP and her “witch huntin” religion will give Biden and the Obama campaign with fodder. The next 48-72 hours should be very intereting in “drill, baby, drill”, the slap back that Sarah richly deserves.

The answer would depend on how well versed you are on the subject. The main gripe with socialism (we are socialist in many respects, more so now) is people’s discomfort with communism. If you Wikipedia both you should see some downsides. I’m strongly against pure capitalism and pure communism, neither have ever been proven to work and it’s against the whole principle of moderation.
There are still lots of citizens with good benefits, until more feel the pinch than not we won’t get anywhere with socialized medicine. Unfortunately even though we have Medicare, Medicaid, and various government suppliers already, a lot of THOSE recipients are anti-national healthcare. In my opinion a classic case of “I got mine”. For better or for worse we all end up on ‘socialized’ healthcare if we’re lucky to live past 65 1/2. I imagine for things to get going the insurance companies will have to lose their lobbying power or be boycotted and crushed by non-participation. The uninsured or poorly insured will have to be a majority and the Dems and Reps will both have to get credit. Kind of like asking for Santa Claus to give the Easter Bunny a ride to the tooth fairy’s house.

This is, indeed, good news. But right now all I can do is be fearful for the safety of Senator Obama. After watching videos of McCain rallies in Ohio, PA, and Wisconsin, and hearing people shout, “treason, traitor, muslim, liar, etc.”. I am really concerned. I really hope the Secret Service is paying VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to his well being, cause the McCain train is really whipping them into a frenzy. It really scares me to death.

maintain. Damn. I hate typos.

I watched Michelle Obama on King and The Daily Show, and she’s, well, I’ll just say it–classy. Bright, intelligent, attractive, funny, warm, and fierce. She is much more fitting for a modern First Lady than the Stepford Wife.

I always get in too late and this may have been said before, but the issue with the baby and Palin that I have is while she was saying she would be an advocate for all moms with children with disabilities, blah, blah…interesting we never heard her say that she would assist teenage mothers or pregnant teens, etc.

And, um, by the way, had the baby not had Down’s Syndrome, would Sarah even know how to be an advocate for such issues? Please give me a break!

Although I believe very strongly that we’re all entitled to our own opinions and beliefs, I’ve always had an incessant need to just help people see my point of view. I don’t want to change their minds, but after all, I’m more than happy to take a look at their point of view!

And that is why all this hatred and all these lies are so difficult to swallow. These people refuse to see another point of view. All these months, and they have never cared enough to check the facts, but they go on believing whatever lie their Joe Six-Pack buddy told them over beer last fall – and he knows cause he got it in an email! They are so hateful, and they are so misled.

I know I sound completely naive. I know that’s just the way people are. And I even know these people are not evil, (well, not all of them anyway) they’ve just been brainwashed.

But I really hate watching the videos with these people spewing their hatred and ignorance. I’m sure all of you are in agreement with me that you just don’t see this kind of behavior at a Democratic event. And you can’t even explain that to these crazies.

I’m just frustrated and venting, and I’ll get over it. In fact, I feel better already!

I hope the report has something of substance. I do have concerns that it won’t. On another note, that affidavit of TP was really telling. It tells a tale of someone obsessed with Wooten and airing his grievance to anyone he could talk to. And the whole photo-op of Wooten on his snow machine? Please. TP is out in the middle of nowhere and “happens” along Wooten. What does he do? He whips out his camera that he just “happens” to have with him? Is a camera usual snow machiner gear? (my quotes)

if trig is really bristol’s child, then the reason sarah covered for her was to save her own career

That’s it? That link that’s not even a news source! It’s about transparency. She was the one who said she was transparent. Tell me – why hide it? There are records for the rest of her kids, right? Why just the baby?

For a person who could lead this nation, this is rather minor. This needs to come forth for voters to make an informed choice. If she is lying about this, what else could she be lying about?

This goes to the heart of the matter – being a hypocrite. She says she’s transparent, but can’t release her records. What will it prove? That’s she’s the mom.

I’m not an AKer, but this is for the second-highest post in the COUNTRY where millions and millions of lives are at stake. Knowing the truth about a birth could affect voters duped into thinking she’s tell-all and not a liar.

This is such good news – please let tomorrow’s report show Palin and her husband for what they are and the country sees it. I feel like a bad person because I hope it’s a scorching detail of government abuse – I should be hoping “justice” will be served. (Can’t I have both?)

As my name suggests, I live in NC in the greater Raleigh area. Since I live in a battleground state in the South, I need to share what I’ve been hit with in the last 3 days. I received in the mail from “The Clarion Fund” a DVD called “Obsession” – a hate filled diatribe against Muslim Jihadists. Apparently, although I may be wrong, this DVD is being sent to voters in the swing states. Gee… I wonder why I got this old 2006 DVD a few weeks before the election? Have any of you in non-battleground states received this obscenity? I have also received 2 pre-recorded calls telling me that Obama is not fit to be President. Please pray for NC that we can pull off the win here for Obama – we did it during the primaries – there are a lot of us transplanted northerners so we have a real shot.

I don’t believe that the First Dude targetted Wooten on his own initiative, as Wooten was married to Sarah Palin’s sister, and the Heath family’s fingerprints are all over this harassment.

I don’t imagine that there’s much that the Dude can intelligently contribute to the Heath family (the last time he done his duty to the family was when he eloped with Sarah and saved them the bill for the wedding), so you can be assured that a bit of harassment and stalking he figured he could handle (not very brilliantly, as we’ve seen, but at least he threw himself heart and soul into the task which was given to him).

Palin vs. “Palin”
By James Poniewozik Thursday, Oct. 09, 2008

…And for a politician new to the national stage, being likened to the intelligent, witty, popular Fey was not exactly a bad thing

Until now, anyway. The governor’s comedian doppelgänger has essentially taken control of Public Sarah Palin: the composite of images, biography and attitudes that stands in for the actual person in voters’ minds…:

9 10 2008

I wait with bated breath…hopefully to have the ability to read the report to be released tomorrow. What both Sarah Palin and McCain fail to realize is: “What is done in the dark, will certainly come to light!” Yes! What goes around…doth comes around!”

“Ain’t no SHAME in either Palin or McCain’s GAME!”

And the Almighty will have the final say. Period. No matter how they attempt to stop Obama…they do not have the power like that of the Supreme ONE! I love it!

I’m a long time Alaskan and have no love lost for Gov Palin by any means. But the topic here is about Troopergate, NOT HER CHILDREN. I do not want to read speculation about the lineage of Trig, it’s none of our damn business so keep it on topic. It’s particularly reminiscent of the mud slinging from the Palin-McCain campaign (yes, I know) so just get over it and take the high road or you are no better than them. We know she’s a liar, we know she has inherited the hubris of the former governor (maybe the chair she sits in?), we know she has shown disrespect, vindictiveness, and possibly even racism to anyone opposing her – so let’s keep digging at all of that and leave the kids out of it. She’s giving us plenty of material, and here in Alaska we have a big decision to make if she returns.

I called the FEC in Washington and they are limited on what they can volunteer so I asked if the Clarion fund was being investigated by the DNC or the NC DNC and they said no. Non Profits are not allowed to participate in political events, hence my keeping it as evidence. Many others here in the area got the DVD as an insert with their newspaper (Raleigh News and Observer) which for some reason I didn’t. When I talked to the paper I told them how they need to exercise some moral fiber when they accept advertising. Will cancel my subscription if I get anything like this from them in the future.

It’s good to see a few people here as well as at the Forum, Madskillz, and Arkangel, among others…good to hear from you! I haven’t been spending as much time over at the Forum, not enough hours in the day to keep up with everything.

I am just feasting my eyes on the Pollster numbers, some are so crazy that I can’t believe it, although they say the only valid poll is Election Day. However, with all of the dirty pool in 2000 and 2004, and 2008, I am not feeling complacent by any means.

Can anyone tell me what the geniuses at the Fed, etc. are doing these days? I was listening to the news today and basically the accounting standards have been so loose the past few years that banks don’t even really know what their own balance sheets are.

How can you bail out a business you can’t account for? It’s like our economy was on steroids and it’s all deflated because the meds have been cut off. I think slow, steady growth is sounding good right now. My retirement fund is down 40% as of end today. That’s just me, I am sure others have similar losses. Part of the $2T lost while Lehman execs go on expensive retreats and other Wall Streeters are getting plastic surgery for their new job interviews.

What do you think Obama is going to do with that 30 minutes of prime time he just bought? It’s on the right column at Pollster.

And today Cindy McCain lost what was left of the enlisted military vote by saying that McCain didn’t suffer from PTSD (yeah right) because he was trained to know what to do. I see that asiangrrl has given you some information. I will agree with her on this. We pay higher taxes. I am 55…well educated and have worked all my adult life. I dont resent the taxes I pay because I get a lot for them…and so do the people who otherwise would do without.

I posted about healthcare a few days ago. I have a family doc…of my own choosing. I wait no more than 3 days for an appointment, and I can see an on call doc at the clinic on any day of the week. Wait times for that are max 1 hour…ever.

I am covered for all medications…(I pay 35 cents) chiropracter…mental health…therapeutic massage…and other ancillaries. I am blessed.

We do of course have a welfare system…a good one. Its not that easy to get however, and most people are required to at least attend school. Of course single moms cant always do that. We have maintenance enforcement, so that if a guy abandons his wife and kids he must pay. His wages are guarnisheed and if he quits his job he goes to jail. His license is also revoked.

there is much more to our system…and yet, and I dont consider myself living in a communist society. I dont mind the word socialist. After all…to me that simply means taking care of everybody. Is that not what a civilized society should do?

Perhaps you havent heard and I hate to come bearing bad news after all our elation over justice prevailing in Alaska today, but Lou Dobbs on CNN just announced, gleefully I might add, that the organization Acorn has turned in thousands of illegal voter’s registration applications that were illegal. Dobbs could barely sit in his seat because he was so thrilled to announce this. He said that Acorn is a group that is affiliated with Senator Obama who are set up to register voters for Senator Obama. Dobbs was so excited, that he continued to repeat this. He talked via satellite to a voter’s registation worker who validated what Dobbs purported, by saying that the that 2100 voter’s registration applicants had been turned in by the Acorn, (On the forms, it was written that the applications had been turned in by Acorns) and that over half of the applications that had been turned in were illegal and fraudulant. Dobbs went on and on about how Senator Obama was a great contributor and supporter of Acorn. I personally do not believe that the Acorn group turned in these applications. The timing is too convenient. This smells of the McCain/Palin’s scam to try to cause an outcry from the public, as he gets accused of trying to throw the election. The reason I do not buy any of this is that by all accounts, Senator Obama is winning, so why would he have someone tamper with the voter’s registration. This seems more like a McCain desperate ploy. I would be willing to bet that this was not the Acorns who turned in those applications bur McCain’s people perpertrating as Acorns. Does it ever stop?

I was listeining to CNN most of the day. I heard the ACORN accusation about voter fraud. I did hear Dobbs say something to the effect that Obama was not responsible for ACORN’S actions. The only thing I think about it, is that in the big effort to get more people voting, some people are getting too amibitious and zealous about it, thus making mistakes. I am sure that the McCain camp will run with this though.

Troopergate: the commentary on the issue was that the voters are NOT INTERESTED in this. They are only interested in the economy. I think they misspoke, however. All of the nitty gritty details have not been put out there yet.

McCain’s rallies are getting angrier and more violent thanks to McCain. Wow! Watching some of this is getting scarey, out of control, and irrational. One guy was irrate about the Obama and the other clowns up in Capitol Hill ruining our country….. dahhhhhh! Isn’t McCain ONE OF THEM? AND for over two decades? I don’t understand how the synaptic connections in some people’s brains work.

Perhaps you havent heard and I hate to come bearing bad news after all our elation over justice prevailing in Alaska today, but Lou Dobbs on CNN just announced, gleefully I might add, that the organization Acorn has turned in thousands of illegal voter’s registration applications that were illegal.

Don’t worry about it, it will all be good in the end. Here’s the information Dobbs neglected to tell you about:

Voter registration cards aren’t the property of ACORN or any other group, and ACORN is required by law to turn in every completed form — even if they’re obviously fraudulent. ACORN insists it has procedures in place to flag these forms, but you can’t blame supervisors of elections from throwing up their hands when they come in.

If you are interested in this subject, here’s a good article for you to read:

I can not believe Cindy McCain said that about PTSD!!!! There is a real push to get military folks to know it is not a weakness.

Very telling. McCain has got to have PTSD from POW experience. It is in his records somewhere by symptom if not diagnosis. He likely has symptoms still, if untreated. I speculate that is why McCain has an aversion to looking at his enemy (er..opponent…Obama), realizing that he will lose it. That infamous temper smells of PTSD.

Off Topic: Someone had posted about their husband getting an email for their dead father on his email account. Today my husband got a BIRTHDAY card from the Republican running for our Federal House of Representatives seat. He is running against the incumbent Democrat. Now I live in Kansas, but in the eastern portion which tends to be pretty darned blue. The card also came with a Flag decal for your window! Don’t know if this was always his plan or if he is having to scramble now that HIS BIG GUY is having a meltdown. Either way it is really CREEPY don’t you think?

I was listeining to CNN most of the day. I heard the ACORN accusation about voter fraud. I did hear Dobbs say something to the effect that Obama was not responsible for ACORN’S actions. The only thing I think about it, is that in the big effort to get more people voting, some people are getting too amibitious and zealous about it, thus making mistakes.

Please stop spreading this king of hysteria. This happens to ACORN every election. They are the right wing boogy man because they are so successful in their voter registration drives. Read this article to put your mind at ease:

And, of course McCain will run with it. He has nothing to sell himself to the public so his only hope is he can convince enough people that he is better than Obama. Empty suit, empty rhetoric, that’s McCain.

The ACORN thing…it looks bad. But I noticed the report said all the fraudulent forms were all written in one person’s hand.

What IDIOT would do that? Can you even imagine the time it took? ACORN hires people to register voters. Hence, a bad employee. I mean, these employees are not making much for their time. And are probably not highly skilled or educated. Although, if the economy keeps slipping, I may hit them up for a job.

califpat,
I can agree that the repubs are capable of pulling that kind of stunt. But then again, how would any organization that helps register voters know whether or not those signing up are ‘legal’? After all, they don’t have any way to check. That’s what the state officials are supposed to do.
I’d be interested to know, in general, what percentage of voter registrations are denied, and for what reasons. Remember in 2004 when the registrations were thrown out in Ohio for being on the wrong weight of paper? Worst of all, it was the state that provided the forms!

Martha Toon (15:40:11) …said:

“She’s giving us plenty of material, and here in Alaska we have a big decision to make if she returns”.

Of all of this I think how things go when she returns is going to be the most interesting. Obviously she had dug herself a huge PR hole and she has made quite a few very public enemies who are no longer fearful of her. She has been exposed for who and what she is and things have been uncovered that I would believe warrant removal from office.

So what do Alaskans do as she returns for her remaining 2+ years of her term? To a degree I think the answer will come from the people and not the members of your State Legislature. Having seen photo’s of your rallies I believe the people don’t like what they’ve been witnessing and has uncovered and will make an honest attempt to send her packing. She doesn’t want to be in Juneau anyways so send her back to Wasilla from wence she came.

Regardless of what happens you all should be proud of what you’ve done for not only your state but your country as well. I don’t say this because I’m a petty vindictive partisan Democrat. I say this as someone who believes in truth, in honesty, and in governing for the people and not for yourself. There is only one reason Sarah Palin wanted to be Governor and that was for the power. Not for what she could do for the people but for what the office could do for her. That is the reason I’m proud of you all because I believe that’s what you all had in your heart as you insisted that the truth of what the Palin’s did had to be uncovered. It had to be uncovered for the sake of your state as well as for those that she wronged.

Enjoy your evening all….

After the report is released, there’s no doubt in my mind, that whose baby is whose will be the last thing anyone is talking about.
That report is going to open one big can of worms.
Aside from the abuse of power aspect, there’s the using insecure public mail-servers for state stuff, there’s CC’ing your KNOWN Radical (known to SP) on the STATE Blackberry that you gave him and the state pays for, there’s the flights your husband has taken and have been reported as gifts with the “boys” from Pebble Mine, there’s the question of your husband having any access whatsoever when he works for BP, there’s the cutting of subsistence hunting and fishing for those who natives NEED it to LIVE, there’s firing Irl Stambaugh for wanting to close the Wasilla bars at 2:30 to keep the drunks off the road, her own donations from Bill Allen(nobody has tied her to him yet?), the little hacking of email she herself did on Reudrich to get him out of her RNC way, getting access to files which she knows was unethical…the list goes on and on.

It only has to open a speck, it’s been festering, and those folks who, up to now, have either been afraid to talk or thought laying a lawsuit would be futile,..will find new energy.
I can’t wait.

Oh baby! This place has always been the bright spot of my day, and it just got a little brighter!!

Observation: I’ve found myself strangely calm in the mist of the escalating storm of hate inducing, riot inciting filth spewing from JM and SP. It came to me today just why. While the repubs attempt to twist and contort Obama into the most vile person on earth, they’ve missed something very crucial. America, for the most part, is a nation that roots for and supports the underdog. We go to the movies and cry our guts out until Benji finds his way home. We scream ourselves sensless when the smallest child on the pee-wee team gets an unexpected steal and starts pumping his little legs towards the goal post. Obama throughout his campaign has demonstrated superb grace and humility, even when the polls had him behind. Every day JM and SP are looking more like the vulgar and vile creatures they believe, they are portraying him as. Now I am not so naive that I don’t believe evil people live amongst us. I’ve heard their vicious shouts of “Terrorist!”, and “Kill him!”. However, I am content to allow the bullies their day as they line up to administer punch after sucker punch. My faith is in those of us that on November 4th will stand up, and proudly cast our vote for the man that has withstood it all.

Yes….I can make as money money as I want, provided I want to work hard. Its no different than living in America except I pay higher taxes…and I get health care no matter what.

My hubby and I both work…and we run a business besides. We do very well….and hopefully will continue to.

Were you under the impression that there is a set wage or salary for everything? I for instance…negotiate my salary and benefits. Its based on my education…my experience and my references. Hubby works in a unionized environment, so his wages are rated….but very high and all kinds of perks and benefits. He has 7 weeks of paid vacation a year…and the company matches his rrsp’s every month.

Its not scary here Diva. We have good lives…excellent ones in fact, if we work toward it with education and hard work. If one cannot for some reason work though…they need not worry about the basics of life like healthcare etc.

We have out problems …but we strive to fix things. Gay marriage is legal here…and since I have a sis who is gay..that pleases me immensely. You cannot imagine how happy I was the day she married.

curlyhairedmomnyc your question about the real issue is right on point.

Listen, it’s just poor judgement to fire someone for the wrong reason. And Todd sticking his nose into things is also worth a slap on the hand.

But accessing someone’s personnel file is a different ball game. Sharing it with people who don’t have access is a big big problem. Sharing personal health information from a Worker’s Comp file is a major federal law violation. And when you do it for a malicious reason, with intent to cause harm….well I think there is serious legal trouble down the road if that in fact happened.

But there is an immediate question that is very important to each of us, though maybe not to the lawyers: Why does the Governor allow her husband to make hundreds of contacts for a personal vendetta? Why does he have this access? Why did she not stop this?

Do we want that in the White House? Do I even have to ask the question?

Palin’s kind of patriotism from the NYTimes-

Criticizing Sarah Palin is truly shooting fish in a barrel. But given the huge attention she is getting, you can’t just ignore what she has to say. And there was one thing she said in the debate with Joe Biden that really sticks in my craw. It was when she turned to Biden and declared: “You said recently that higher taxes or asking for higher taxes or paying higher taxes is patriotic. In the middle class of America, which is where Todd and I have been all of our lives, that’s not patriotic.”

What an awful statement. Palin defended the government’s $700 billion rescue plan. She defended the surge in Iraq, where her own son is now serving. She defended sending more troops to Afghanistan. And yet, at the same time, she declared that Americans who pay their fair share of taxes to support all those government-led endeavors should not be considered patriotic.

I only wish she had been asked: “Governor Palin, if paying taxes is not considered patriotic in your neighborhood, who is going to pay for the body armor that will protect your son in Iraq?

Why do I find myself thinking that if Barack Obama, due to an adulterous relationship, had left Michelle, who is close to his age (just hypothetical, he’d never do it!) and was now running for prez with a first lady 18 years younger than himself (age 29), and selected a VP candidate who is TWENTY-EIGHT years younger than himself (age 19), folks would freak out? I’m sure they’ll move back once the country becomes more tolerant and self-disciplined. VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN

Scary interview with Max Blumenthal about his new Salon article on Palin’s associations with psycho members of the AIP. He specifically talks about her attempt to appoint Steve Stole (sp?) to her vacant city council seat after she became mayor, much to the dismay of other Wasilla residents who were afraid of this violent, paranoid man. She’s just mean all the way through, isn’t she?

Laurie and Vlad,
Thanks tons. I had no impression, scary or otherwise. Mostly confused. I saw the videos and people yelling out Obama is socialist. I was trying to determine what was wrong with that.

I told my son yesterday if McCain won I was moving to Canada. Hmmm that may
not be that bad. I am fighting now for my youngest son child support. Have a small

@badfinger: “Lara” it doesn’t bother you that mom and dad are concealing this to avoid an embarrassing situation?

No, it really doesn’t. Not for a moment. It’s not just lying to avoid embarassment. It’s (maybe) lying to protect your daughter and grandchild from public scrutiny, humiliation and condemnation, about something that will have no effect on the nation, our families, or anyone else. It really just doesn’t matter to my life. I thought Clinton lying about consensual, private sex was none of our business (a dispicable guy and a predator, and I’d be pissed if I was Hillary, Chelsea or Monica, but not worth weakening the presidency over – and the nation paid a cost for it – including the republicans.)

I’m concerned about her (lack of) ethics, her (lack of) intelligence, her ignorance, her vindictiveness. I’d probably be concerned about her positions on things if she would ever explain them in something beyond sound bites. But covering up for her daughter’s pregnancy (IF it’s true,) not in the least. AS it turns out, I had a friend in college who’s parents did the same thing. Very nice family. My sister had a friend who knew of a similar situation for a family down the street. You can argue whether it’s a good idea or not. What lies need to be told to who for how long. But from a political standpoint, I don’t care.

Take a minute to realize what is really going to be uncovered. Sarah and Todd not only went out their way to have Wooten fired, and when he wasn’t fired, made Monegan pay with his own job, but the really really unsavory crime she committed and which will rise to the top, is the threatening to cancel or not renew the Worker Comp contract, and the fact a new contract was granted at a price much greater than the lowest bidder had offered.

Seems like this is an appropriate time to remember good ‘ole Joe six pack, as Palin (and the rest of them for that matter) seem to fall into that category:
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Joe gets it too.
He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.
Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.
If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FDIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.
Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.
He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans.
The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to.
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: “We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”

By MATT APUZZO – 6 minutes ago

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — On the eve of a report on a legislative panel’s abuse-of-power investigation into Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, campaign officials released their own report clearing her of any wrongdoing.

Palin, running mate to Republican presidential nominee John McCain, is the subject of two inquiries into whether she abused her power by firing her public safety commissioner. The commissioner says he was dismissed for resisting pressure to fire Palin’s former brother-in-law, a state trooper.

Lawmakers are expected to release their findings Friday.

The report the McCain-Palin campaign released Thursday night says the firing was based on a budget dispute. Since then, the report says, the matter has been muddled with innuendo, rumor and politics.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

@ Vlad
Thank goodness for solid regulations and no bad papaer.

That isn’t correct, as our Canadian banks cheerfully bought into the funny-money asset-backet mortgage and derivative Ponzi paper flogged to non-Americans and Americans by Fannie and Freddie, etc…and just as cheerfully sold it onward to Canadian and American retail investors (the SEC told RBC to repay $4.5 billion to Americans who bought the garbage, which RBC will do).

The total cost to the Canadian banks for this Ponzi paper is estimated to be about $19 billion, and they’re holding it waiting for the US assets to recover value; however, inasmuch as nobody really knows what the forward-sold Ponzi paper really covers, the chance of them ever seeing more than a dime on the dollar is slim indeed.

Because banks don’t lose large lumps of money like that and stay solvent, the gov’t has freed up $18 billion in bail-out money, if needed. Solvent banks will recover that $18 billion by way of increased fees and interest spreads so, with a population of about 33 million, that is going to cost every man, woman and child $545 (with 330 miilion people, it’ll cost each American $2,121 to cover the $700 billion).

While the Canadian banks got rooked on those derivatives, that’s pretty much all they’re on the hook for (but our real estate market is dangerously over-valued, too). America is, unfortunately awash in these stupid derivatives and no one knows where the end will be.

Meanwhile, those who created and flogged the Ponzi paper out of nebulous American debt are still sitting there with the cash (except that they likely had the loot stuffed into Goldman Sachs, AIG, Morgan Stanley shares which have imploded themselves).

The recent list of the top 25 male executives in the US for 2007 had four executives of now-defunct Lehman Bros raking in about $600 million dollars…which is a meaningful portion of the $700-billion rescue package.

Of course, these Lehman people must have paid a bit in taxes (which they’ll get back if money returns to the markets and the value of their paper goes up again), so they’re likely sitting around the dining room tables in their various residences busily bemoaning their fate and hoping that the commom man votes for McCain and brings back the golden excesses of the Bush years.

Great NYT article about Monegan and Palin.
What I don’t get, and it sticks in my craw, is that Wooten had been ordered to pay $1000/month in support to his Ex.
Now, if he didn’t have a job, he wouldn’t be able to pay and,…Todd and Sarah care so little for Molly’s children that they’d rather cut off the cash supply?
That doesn’t make any sense.

I realize Todd has been somewhat emasculated by his wife, but would that drive him to such silly behavior?
I still say Wooten has some D.I.R.T. on them, and that’s the reason for this ‘obsession’,…somebody’s terrified that some dirty little secret is going to be spilled.

Can we all say—together—PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKE?

Doncha have to wonder which Einstein dreamed it up?

A quote from their lawyer Clarkson today, prior to the hearing:

Clarkson acknowledged he’s also working with, though not receiving payment from, the McCain-Palin campaign.

“Have I talked to them? Sure. Do they tell me what to do? No,” he said, adding: “Sometimes they don’t know what they’re talking about.”

Oliver Clark, the man who McCain said probably didn’t know what Fannie Mae was before the financial crisis at the debate posted on his facebook page “Well Senator, I actually did. I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent person. I have a bachelor degree in Political Science from Tennessee State, so I try to keep myself up to date with current affairs. I have a Master degree in Legal Studies from Southern Illinois University, a few years in law school, and I am currently pursuing a Master in Public Administration from the University of Memphis. In defense of the Senator from Arizona I would say he is an older guy, and may have made an underestimation of my age. Honest mistake. However, it could be because I am a young African-American male. Whatever the case may be it was somewhat condescending regardless of my age to make an assumption regarding whether I was knowledgeable about Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.”

[[What is the possibility that the report will reveal that nothing
was done which would be considered abuse of power?]]]

I’m guessing that this investigation will have opened a Pandora’s box of future investigations on Sarah and Todd Palin. We know they believe they are above the law and won’t get caught, so it is highly likely that the same kind of stupid, foolish risks they took in using their power in personal vendettas, and using a virtually unprotected yahoo account for government business they didn’t want scrutinized by the public, will be repeated in other arenas.

Income tax fraud immediately comes to mind, as does the workers’ comp issue.

And there is no telling what else will have surfaced in the cesspool called “Governor Palin’s administration.”

The fact that she cc’d Todd and others on personnel matters, especially the workers comp issue, leaves Alaska and the Palins wide open for lawsuit.

Oh, tomorrow should be interesting…

And thanks to Alaskans who would not give up, and who, with the tenacity of…well, a pit-bull, continued to challenge the Palins until they got action. America thanks you!

strangelet (Speck Backfire Hussein Palin)

Divatalk Hussein —

I think Laurie and Vlad have talked you down already, but I’d just like to put in a couple more cents about “isms”. In the US, we tend to hear a lot about four “isms” in the political/economic arena: capitalism, communism, socialism, and fascism. Unfortunately, almost nobody uses any of the terms correctly, which leads to a lot of confusion. And, I admit, when I say “correctly” I mean “the way I do”. However, I think the way I use the terms is pretty close to the historical usage, and the the way most of the evil intellectual elite use them.

Jumping right to socialism: this is the notion that government should take an active role in providing for the basic needs of its citizens. It is a theory about the relationship of government to economy. It is not incompatible with any of the other three “isms”. You can have a little bit of it (Social Security, Medicare, AFDC), more of it (National Health Care as in UK and Canada), or lots of it (cf, Scandanavia, and, perhaps, Alaska). Generally, the more of it you have, the higher your average total taxes will be (the money has to come from somewhere). Interestingly, the “bailout bill” is absolutely an example of socialism, even though it will mostly benefit capitalists.

Capitalism has become, for historical reasons, identified with the United States. This has always seemed a bit odd to me, because the term itself comes from good old Econ 101. The three basic elements of any economy are Capital (the means of production, like factories, or the money to create them), Labor (generally, you and me), and Material (Econ 101 assumes we are in business to produce something physical, so we need iron or light bulbs or other component parts). The basic concept of “capitalism” is that Capital is the most important of the three, and therefore should get preferential treatment (e.g., most of the profits and wild parties).

Frankly, I think most of the Founding Fathers would have gotten out their 2nd-Amendment-protected arms and gone hunting Capitalists, if there had been many around the former Colonies.

To finish, communism and fascism are both more political ideas than economic ones. Both see government as having a high (nay, total) degree of control over economic activity. In practice, this has quickly led to government control over ALL activity. In theory, there are differences between these two “isms”, but in all actual implementations of either one, the enormous power of the central government has corrupted that government and led to dictatorship.

The main remaining difference between them is that liberals tend to call conservatives “fascists” and conservatives call liberals “commies”. Since there are very few real Commies around these days, conservatives have started to substitute “socialist” as a pejorative, because you have to call people something. But any conservative who can contemplate the bailout bill without immediately going into armed revolt does not really get to use “socialist” as an insult. Because, he are one, at least a little.

I’m sure glad I can write stuff at such length here and not get smeared. Thanks, mudpups. (I can easily stand being ignored).

One final terminological point. “Capitalism” has become conflated in the US with “free markets”, and even with “democracy”. This is not necessarily the case. For instance, the canonical example of fascism (Mussolini’s Italy) was strongly capitalist, had centrally controlled markets, and was very undemocratic.

“Free market” economies have, indeed, tended to develop democratic political institutions. But it is important to remember that above the level of a farmers’ market, or a three-card-monte impresario, there aren’t any completely free, unregulated markets any more (well, maybe credit-default swaps; that worked out really well, eh?). It’s a matter of degree, just like socialism.

I myself favor strongly regulated financial and utilities markets, modest regulation of transportation, light regulation of most other markets, and baseline single-payer health care, baseline government funded retirement, and emergency “welfare” support.

I also favor low capital gains tax rates with a fairly long holding period (to encourage long term investment), allowing short-selling but rigorously penalizing naked shorting, and a cap-and-trade market in carbon (as a atarting point).

And world peace, of course.

So, what kind of “ist” does that make me? Don’t worry about it. Just figure out what you’d like the world to look like, and try to move it that direction. If you get worried about “socialism”, think about Social Security. If you get worried about “capitalism”, remember that these here webz basically came from capitalism. If you get worried about “fascism”, vote for Obama/Biden.

There really aren’t any Commies anymore.

Cheers.

Now the Republicans are complaining about her picture in Newsweek?
Give me a break!! All I can complain about the picture is that she didn’t have a swastika painted on her forehead. Here’s a key passage from the NY Times story, just up on HuffPost. Tomorrow should be very interesting:

“Ms. Palin has denied that anyone told Mr. Monegan to dismiss Mr. Wooten, or that the commissioner’s ouster had anything to do with the trooper. But an examination of the case, based on interviews with Mr. Monegan and several top aides, indicates that, to a far greater degree than was previously known, the governor, her husband and her administration pressed the commissioner and his staff to get Mr. Wooten off the force, though without directly ordering it.

In all, the commissioner and his aides were contacted about Mr. Wooten three dozen times over 19 months by the governor, her husband and seven administration officials, interviews and documents show.

‘To all of us, it was a campaign to get rid of him as a trooper and, at the very least, to smear the guy and give him a desk job somewhere,’ said Kim Peterson, Mr. Monegan’s special assistant, who like several other aides spoke publicly about the matter for the first time.

Ms. Peterson, a 31-year veteran of state government who retired 10 days before Mr. Monegan’s firing, said she received about a dozen calls herself. ‘It was very clear that someone from the governor’s office wanted him watched,’ she said.”

On CNN Larry King Thurs night, Ari Flesher, former White House Secretary for Bush, said the matter would only be a “blip” as no one is interested as it’s about her husand. Of all the shows I’ve watched, this is the first time I’ve seen Ari out talking. Makes you wonder — did CNN ask him or was he put out there by the campaign being a bit nervous.

I have to say, Bay Buchanan is like a rabid dog supporting SP. Make sure you have a rabies shot if you are ever in her vicinity!!

Divatalk Hussein: You asked a question about Canadian having government healthcare. Yes we do. We all have access to care. I presently don’t work but I do not have the worry of health insurance stopping or not transferring to a different employer. None of that. The cost calculations have changed different times to where you don’t even think about it. I believe it now calculates based on your earnings. Mine calculated on my tax return based on investment interest (income). Percentage I can’t remember but was not much. When you have kids or yourself with a major illness or lifelong illness, you are not lying in a hospital fighting with insurance company. The other major benefit — no one looses their houses over medical bills. The ones in US that loose their houses are the sickest or lifelong diseases — that’s disgraceful. I yell at my TV when a story is on about that. There are downsides — sometimes getting specialist appts takes longer than you have. Depends to what it is. If you have to present in emergency, you get seen by specialist if emerg required. We have a doctor shortage in some provinces — know why — US comes to our Health Career Fairs & Med schools and offer big bucks so they go south!! US stealing our drs & nurses with $$$. Seniors at 65, their prescriptions are paid. No need to decide do I get pills or do I eat. Knowing things like that — I have no problem waiting for specialist appts. There are some things not covered as being cosmetic & things I can’t remember. If you want to read more, search say Province of Ontario health or Province of Alberta health. Each Province has there own programs so there are some differences. If I lived in Alberta and visited Ontario — I’m covered. Seriously, I think they make more about it than necessary. Michael Moore talked about the Europe & Canadian in his movie he did. To hear that our drugs not safe for use in US — Canada is not third world. We probably have more regulations on drugs than you. We get free flu shots across the country. Hope this helped a bit.

If she happens to read this and learns that she can legally sell Alaska oil overseas, I feel pretty certain she will put dollar before country as she does with LNG.
http://community.adn.com/node/126957
You have to scroll down to see the relevant quote from Palin

“If, in fact, LNG is economically better for Alaska , it will get its chance. TC Alaska has made clear, repeatedly, that they will build a line to Valdez if customers show up at an open season. Let’s be clear, though, that export to Asian markets is the only viable configuration for an LNG project. To suggest – as your ad does – that LNG from Alaska will reach US markets is disingenuous at best.”

What she says regarding delivery to US markets is no longer true but it is clear, for Palin, dollars for Alaska trumps US energy independence. Not begrudging Alaska their profit but the woman, when she is not wondering who Obama is, blathers about being our key to energy independence.

First time post here, probably the last…I’m just a spectator mostly… 🙂

The only point I want to make about Trig is this. I understand that people question who the mom is, I do too. But not because “she lied about it or didn’t lie”, not because I wish to cause more grief for her already psychologically neglected children….

But I will not believe that Sarah Palin ever did such a thing in order to “be a good parent”, to save her kid any embarassment. She is out for herself and herself alone. She has used Trig as a prop, it has outraged me to no end.

Here’s the reason why who the mom is relevent…..but let me say I don’t care if we ever know the truth.

There have been a lot of pictures that indicate Bristol hangs out with a crowd who drink A LOT of hard liquor.

If her pregnancy and subsequent medical issues for Trig arose from wreckless behavior that her mom did not monitor, control, attend to, etc…and then she adopted baby Trig to avoid the potential problems it would pose if it where known her underage child had child with a medical condition due to ILLEGAL TEENAGE DRINKING……you can see my concern here. It’s another cover up, in a long list of them for Sarah Palin.

That speaks volumes about her decision making skills, it speaks volumes about her her policy of no sex education, and her lust for shaping reality as she wants other to see it–truth be damned. She obviously thinks she’s above the law.

But I don’t care if we ever know the answer regarding Trig. Sarah Palin is a train wreck enough on her own before we need to hurt her children anymore over her wreckless, ego-manical behavior.

That’s my 2 cents.

David Gergen on Colbert Report tonight. The guy has a lot of good insights. Said the way one campaigns IS the first few months of their presidency. Read into that what you will.

SHOCKED by the African American at the McCain rally. As others have said, how much did they have to pay the guy? And how many showers did Cindy make John take after the handshake.

Of course, African Americans can be Republican, even when a black man is running for office, but the way the audience applauded him was so freaking disengenuous. In any other situation, the people in that venue wouldn’t have looked at him.

I worked for our Alaskan LNG group before moving overseas several years ago. A huge portion of the natural gas produced gets sent to Asia. That contract was just renewed courtesy of LaPalina. Not coincidentally, our natural gas costs are to increase 22% this winter. Also not coincidentally, there is lots of talk about Exxon sitting on Pt. Thompson natural gas reserves — they have not been able to get the permit approval to start drilling there, but word within the oil industry is that they are willing to make a deal with her — if she will push those through they will throw their support behind her TransCanada pipeline instead of the All-Alaskan Pipeline that is in the works between BP/ConocoPhillips (and maybe Exxon depending on how she deals…).

Country first? Alaska first? I don’t think so!

@Anon:

I have to agree with your theory. I’ve thought about it on & off myself. The reason being that I know two very young girls who have children. One of them had a down’s syndrome child — she was 16ish. The second is a young Wasilla girl I know who has a child so incredibly messed up — cerebral palsy & lots of other stuff — and she was a big meth head. LaPalina may like to denigrate people for calling Wasilla the meth-capital of Alaska, but the sad fact is that it is true. That info was in the Anchorage Daily News, based on police busts & statistics.

My primary concern for baby Trig is that he be raised with love & care. Whomever provides it is not my concern, but I hope that he gets it. However, just as in a court of law, whether or not she is telling the truth about this it “goes to character” (or whatever that line is, it’s been a long time since I’ve watched any legal shows!). You show the birth certificate, the doc says “yea, I delivered her baby, she’s telling the truth!” and it’s all gone, nobody bothers with the children issue again. If she really cared about her children she would want to tell the truth about this — once she does they are no longer subject to scrutiny & speculation.

Please someone tell me what the verdict was? I tried to click the buttom to read the ruling but it didn’t pop up on my comp. I guess I’ll have to find out on CNN or MSNBC I hope. From reading the comments on here sounds like they ruled out guilty on Palin, am I right?

I knew it….I knew there were something suspicious about Sarah being the mother of Trig. I had the gut feeling that Bristol was the real mother to the baby but because the news reported from early on that in fact Sarah is the mother to the bay I still had my doubts.

I understand how some of you feel about keeping Trig out of this but I think it is only fair that America knows the truth that Sarah has been lying all along about being Trig’s mother. America had doubted this situation from the start but because the news media comfirmed the facts that Sarah was in fact Trig’s mom, Amerca believed her. McCain/Palin’s supporters all laughed at those who doubted the situation. So, therefore I think it’s only fair to tell the world who the child’s real mother is. It’s only fair that the truth be heard and credit Trig to his real mother otherwise the American pple will never know the truth and the lies that his granny portrayed his life record. Besides, I think it’s only fair to Trig that truth be told about his real mother otherwise it’ll be sad that he has to live the rest of his life with a lying record.

@vena45:

The Supreme Court ruled against the McCain legal thugs who were attempting to block the investigation. That’s good/great/wonderful/incredible news.

The 1st Dud submitted his own crap interrogatories that were pathethic, made him look pretty bad, but of course he says that his wife knew nothing about the egregious shite that he pulled.

Branchflower’s report is due tomorrow (today for most of you all), however, the legislators still need to vote to A) accept the report, and B) release the report to the public.

After the Supreme Court’s ruling the evil witch of the west declared that she has been proved not-guilty by the 3-person personnel board that SHE APPOINTED.

We are all just waiting to hear whether or not the legislators will vote to release the report tomorrow. It was kind of stupid really for the wicked witch to declare herself not-guilty ahead of that, because then why shouldn’t the report be released, as there is apparently nothing in it that is bad…

She is a nutter and there is a special place in hell for her, someone who incites racism & is such an utter hypocrite & sh!ts all over her kids & everyone else, some people (like me) might call that place Wasilla… In my opinion, there is no town/city in Alaska, at least not one with more than 1000 people, that is worse than Wasilla. She deserves to rot there.

Re: my remarks about Wasilla — I was born in AK 40 years ago, and I’ve lived in AK for 35 years, and even lived in Wasilla for a short time when I was a teenager. I’ve lived in plenty of places in Alaska, and much as I love my family & friends who live in Wasilla, I absolutely loathe that city. Nothing personal against the mudflatters from Wasilla! Wasilla is a poisonous combination of churches/bars/rednecks, almost no racial diversity (about 50 blacks/asians?), and lots & lots of kids gone wild. My eldest is a teen, and my friends who have teens in Wasilla have told me some scary stories! I also know a little bit about that teen thing based on my experiences back in the day…

I am the first one posting on Oct 10 as all of you Americans are still asleep! I woke up and went on-line to the New York Times and found this on the front page

giving a sneak peek into some of the statements they seemed to have collected from “witnesses”. The evidence in the statements seems so overwhelming (I know I am a bit biased, but…) a case for abuse – all coming from the Governor’s office. They sure were obssessed with Wooten and keeping him out of the Gov’s way and the pressure on Megan’s office concerning Wooten (not straight-forward firing, but more like, you should be keeping an eye on him, he’s dangerous, lock him up in an office somewhere so the Gov never has to see him or know about him.) Seems like abuse of power to me…

@Canadian Neighbour:

My husband is working in Canada right now. The girls & I will join him when our eldest graduates in May. I got off the phone with him a short time ago, we were having some laughs about the article that was posted on here some threads ago, from a newspaper in Manitoba, I think, a jokey piece about US people being smuggled across the border into Canada in Volvos. If you can find that bit it is hilarious! My hubby knows that I am asking for political asylum in Canada if Obama does not win (God forbid)! We came back to AK after many years in the UK to a country gone mad. Don’t get me wrong — we read the news & talked to family regularly, even had a couple trips back to the US in the years that we were gone — however, we left here as Republicans that were fiscally conservative, totally non-religious, and came back to a Republican party that is little more than a bunch of KKK/Religious nutters! I changed my registration to Undeclared, and my husband kept his Republican so he can make a statement by voting Democrat.

We also decided that we might start looking out for 4 or 5 kids/adults to join us in case we need to hide in an abbey cemetary because the Palins are hunting us with rifles, walk across the mountains to Canada, start our own singing troupe, and then make a movie about it. The new 4/5 kids/adults would need to be good singers because we suck & our daughters do too.

Am adding this way too late guys, but…. Portage Central… the high school “Our Lady of Alaska” (I am not kidding here — that’s what our local priest has ref’d SP as — LOL) so blindly, blatantly & irresponsibly sent her teenage son off is known to have a MAJOR meth/heroin problem… Now, question is, why would a freaking governor of all “folks” *wink* not even the wisdom/desire/drive/time/ETC… to look into something like that that?

If you were sending your kid off 4,000 miles away to a some strange place where you not only had no ‘kin’ but had no intention of visiting, would you not at least check into what the hell was going on there??????

Just so you know… Down syndrome is not caused by consumption of alcohol. It is caused by a random splitting of chromosomes during meiosis after fertilization. There is no evidence that parental behavior or any type of exposure to environmental elements.

However, alcohol consumption can cause fetal alcohol syndrome which can cause a host of other behavioral problems in the growing child.

Thank you for the information. I been watching the news all day today just to find out what the ruling is. I just hope and pray that the court will be honest and truthful and rule the case honestly and not be bought off by McCain and his Republicans or be pressure by them to clear her guilt. Let’s let the facts speak for themselves.

But to ROSANNE HEMOND who commented on this post: I will say that yours was perhaps the most well thought out post I have ever seen on WordPress.

Like you, I cannot stand the hypocrisy of her “folksy” speaking. I don’t believe for a minute that she is any more an ordinary person that the great bulk of our higher elected officials. She’s acting; pure and simple.

And even if it is truly her speaking style; how will it really work for her? Yes, it might get her elected if there are enough dumb Americans (and I fear that there are). But it will not work for her as she attempts to undo the tremendous damage to the American image done internationally by eight years of the Bush administration. Your point about Putin was right on.

We do NOT hire the President and Vice President to be one of us. I do not want the plumber, car salesman, shoe store manager, or any other reasonbly ordinary, caring, basically intelligent and good American to hold these offices. And, anyone that has half a brain doesn’t either.

Folks, to lead this country requires an incredible amount of intelligence, judgement, insight, diplomacy, and political ability. In fact, the results of the last eight years of government should show what happens when those qualities are in short supply. (And, just to set the record straight, I have been a Republican all my life.)
