Senatorial and House Debate in Anchorage

9 10 2008

It’s been a busy news week in Alaska, and I’ve yet to have time to write about this week’s Senatorial and House debates!

As we know, Ted Stevens is…otherwise occupied this week, so his debate with Mark Begich had to be filmed and shown to the crowd assembled at the University of Alaska, on screen.  The moderator was John Tracy.

I arrived a bit late, and missed the very beginning of the Begich/Stevens debate.  As I walked in the door, Ted Stevens was speaking.  I came in, walked down the aisle, looked around, found a seat, took off my coat, got out my camera, found my notepad, then had to hunt for a pen, opened the notepad, uncapped the pen, and he was still speaking….the same sentence.  All I could write on the pad was “longest run-on sentence ever uttered.”  Taking notes was to prove almost impossible.  Ted Stevens has a similar affliction as Sarah Palin.  Charlie Gibson has finally given it a name.  It’s the “Blizzard of Words” phenomenon.

All I can say is this, which I’ve plucked out of Ted’s blizzard of words.  According to Stevens: our country has absolutely no hope for the future without drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.  We also need to drill offshore on the Continental Shelf.  And we need to find a way to decrease fuel costs.  We can create 20,000 jobs for every million barrels of oil we drill.  “You can’t get there (energy independence) without ANWR!”

What is our biggest problem?  “Extreme environmentalists”  “Jimmy Carter”  and don’t forget “They opposed cutting timber too!” (uttered with horror).  His dreams for the future?  Keep kids in school. Give them hope. Drill everywhere, and “open the forests”.

When given the opportunity to ask a question of his opponent, Mark Begich, he wanted to know how he would convince those “New York California” politicians to drill drill drill!  Begich who is in favor of drilling (all Alaska politicians are), said he’d bring them up here to show them how it could be done in an environmentally conscious way.

Begich, for his part, did very well.  He spoke in complete English sentences which could by understood by the audience.  He discussed his issues clearly and concisely.  He mentioned his website.  He did have on a little too much blush, but that wasn’t his fault.  He even held it together well when Ted Stevens told him he was “just as crazy as the devil.”

Begich got several rounds of applause during the debate.  Stevens did too, but they were more tentative…almost like the audience didn’t quite understand what he said, but they were trying to be kind.

Then we were on to 18 term Republican incumbend Don Young vs. Democratic challenger Ethan Berkowitz.

The questions started with the economy.  Don Young said he opposed the bail-out and had received 3800 phone calls about it.  3500 opposing, and 300 for.  He voted against.  The bail-out, he said, was a “slippery slope to socialism.”

Ethan Berkowitz said he would have been a “reluctant supporter” and stated concerns about the credit crunch affecting businesses.

Here’s the World According to Young:   All our financial woes started with Bill Clinton.  Alexander Hamilton put down the Whiskey Rebellion, and [Young] doesn’t know why he did…hahaha.  (???)  He wants to privatize social security to “let the young people invest.”  He shushed applause for Berkowitz.  He reprimanded the red warning light.  He doesn’t like Hillary Clinton.  Something else is Bill Clinton’s fault.  Most of the problems in the house are the fault of Nancy Paloosi (yes, that’s how he pronounces it).  The housing crisis was set off by energy issues because we’re not drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. “Nancy Paloosi has a huge hammer and doesn’t want to burn fossil fuels because she wants to (eye roll) save the planet.”

He thinks Sarah Palin is a great candidate and it doesn’t bother him that she hasn’t endorsed him.  He doesn’t need anybody’s endorsement.  He’s “not going to do cartwheels” to get anyone’s endorsement.

He “look[s] forward to sending his first batch of earmarks to John McCain, and I dare him to veto it.”  Young loves earmarks and thinks that any member of congress who isn’t out to get lots of earmarks isn’t doing his/her job.

His question to Ethan Berkowitz?  How would you face up to Nancy Paloosi [sic] regarding energy issues and drilling?   Berkowitz responded that energy issues shouldn’t be partisan and that he would be an Alaskan congressman and represent the issues of Alaska.  Don didn’t like that answer.  “That’s just words!  You would have voted with her!”  Then looking at the audience, “He will do what she says to do!”

Hoooo.  Don Young has some major hangups with “Paloosi”.

Berkowitz was good the rest of the time.  He spoke up about alternative energy, no child left behind, hope and optimism.  When asked if he supported Palin, he responded he was supporting “Barack Obama and Tina Fey” which left out some of the AARP crowd who was hosting the debate.  He did get sporadic applause, but there was a noticeable lack of any kind of applause for Don Young.

Whichever political leanings the audience had, nobody was unsure of where the candidates stood, and no one left wondering which way to vote.

And while they’re at it, they should watch out for McCain. He may try to get a retirement gig in Alaska (or maybe you’ll be lucky and he’ll opt for Moscow”…)

I never thought anyone could make Ted Stevens look like a paragon of reason and virtue, but then I read this: http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/10/10/palin_chryson/index2.html. So I think we have an idea of who the actual “Manchurian candidate” is.

Ted Stevens is full of shit.

The LARGEST oil reservoir in the world was found at Gull Island, AK in the 1970s. Big oil CAPPED IT. (Google Lindsey Williams) Think about it: Increased supply means decreased price.

Guess who funds the “environmentalist groups” who file lawsuits to prevent drilling in the name of “protecting the environment?” That’s right — Exxon Mobile (Standard Oil), Citgo, Conoco, etc. Also Rockefeller and Ford Foundations.

Big oil has a HUGE interest in NOT drilling. Rhetoric from Stevens — or Palin — won’t change that.

Thanks, AKM! Ivan Moore the poll guy was on the 5 o’clock news and is still amazed that Stevens is holding his own in the polls. He said that one would think that the older people would be voting for Ted and the younger against him – but the opposite is true! I guess Ethan Berkowitz is trouncing Don Young a bit at this point – Young’s approval rating is under 50% and Moore said that is significant.

With Stevens, I wonder if it Dems and Independents who get polled are choosing Ted to stimulate the vote? One can only hope.

I wish I understood the poll thing better. Statistics. Hmmmpf.

Just read the Esquire endorsement. It is hardly ringing praise for Barack. It is more of a condemnation of McCain and the Bush administration.
It is however, the first endorsement that Esquire has given in 75 years so I will take it. The New Yorker has also come out endorsing Barack.

McCain seems to be trying whatever might work. I am wondering if they even know what voter group they are trying to influence. Right now, seems like the Hate vote. Otherwise, his mortgage policy totally pissed off thinking conservatives. Then he modified it for taxpayers to give morgage-lenders 100% of mortgage value rather than current appraisal. Okay. REALLY big government and ENORMOUS earmarks. Hmmm. McCain may actually appreciate Palin Report to have something else to rant about.

URGENT
Palin pre-empts state report, clears self in probe
By MATT APUZZO
Associated Press

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Trying to head off a potentially embarrassing state ethics report on GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, campaign officials released their own report Thursday that clears her of any wrongdoing.

Sen. John McCain’s running mate is the subject of a legislative investigation into whether she abused her power as governor by firing her public safety commissioner. The commissioner, Walter Monegan, says he was dismissed in July for resisting pressure from Palin’s husband, Todd Palin, and numerous top aides to fire state trooper Mike Wooten, Palin’s former brother-in-law.
Lawmakers are expected to release their own findings Friday. Campaign officials have yet to see that report – the result of an investigation that began before she was tapped as McCain’s running mate – but said the investigation has falsely portrayed a legitimate policy dispute between a governor and her commissioner as something inappropriate.

“The following document will prove Walt Monegan’s dismissal was a result of his insubordination and budgetary clashes with Governor Palin and her administration,” campaign officials wrote. “Trooper Wooten is a separate issue.”

Monegan said Thursday that he doesn’t know what to expect from the legislative panel’s own report.

“I just hope that the truth is figured out,” Monegan told The Associated Press on Thursday. “That the governor did want me to fire him, and I chose to not. You just can’t walk up to someone and say, ‘I fire you.’ He didn’t do anything under my watch to result in termination.”

Palin’s critics say that shows she used her office to settle family affairs.
“When you’re the governor, you leave your household hat at home and you become governor,” said state Senate President Lyda Green, a Republican who has frequently clashed with Palin.

The campaign’s report instead blames former campaign opponent, Andrew Halcro, who has a blog, of conspiring with Wooten to pin Monegan’s dismissal on the family’s dispute with Wooten. Three days after Monegan was fired, they say, Wooten told his ex-wife, Palin’s sister, that: “You guys are going down. Get ready for the show.”

Two days after that confrontation, they say, Halcro and Wooten met at a hotel bar in Anchorage for more than three hours – and that evening, Halcro posted the first accusations on his blog that Monegan had been fired because of a vendetta against Wooten by the Palin family.

“It is tragic that a false story hatched by a blogger after drinks with Trooper Wooten led the legislature to allocate over $100,000 of public money to be spent in what has become a politically driven investigation,” the 21-page report concludes.

Although the report describes Wooten as a separate issue, the McCain campaign goes into great detail about the “rogue” trooper and his “long history of unstable and erratic behavior.” The campaign describes allegations of violence, including threatening Palin’s family and shooting his stepson with a stun gun.

The report also includes allegations that Wooten cheated the workers’ compensation system. Todd Palin has said he had numerous conversations with government officials about why Wooten was allowed to stay on the job.
“The Palins make no apologies for wanting to protect their family and wanting to bring attention to the injustice of a violent trooper keeping his badge and abusing the workers’ compensation system.”

But Todd Palin said he never pressured anyone, including his wife.
The McCain campaign says the investigation has become “muddied with innuendo, rumor and partisan politics.”

The thing is, Ted has SO much seniority. Even in the minority party, that still gives him a lot of leverage to steer flying pork up north. Methinks your Alaskan electorate is not too unsophisticated….

In Young’s case, he has lotta seniority too, but in the minority in the House that’s worth much less.

Of course, what folks may be overlooking in Ted’s case, is if he happens to pass away in the next two years, they could be looking at Senator Dudd.

I am soooo confused. Who researched and prepared the report that clears Palin (and that Mad Skillz posted)? Is this a report from the governor appointed Personnel Board? Or has the McCain-Palin campaign researched a report that they feel is NOT partisan? As I remember Palin’s primary criticism of the Branchflower report was that it was partisan, biased etc.

I’ve thought about this for ten minutes now, and I realize how hard it’s been for Palin to “urgently clear herself” when she’s not even in Alaska….That’s a pretty amazing feat, to clear oneself in an investigation from out-of-state….

Palin is a laughingstock. And if those are her SAT scores, it does confirm what we all knew about her brain…

I would laugh more but since she is a racist hate-monger who incites mobs daily, I have to stop laughing and keep campaigning for Obama-Biden….

Is Sarah Palin’s anti-Obama rhetoric giving new birth to the neo-racist movement in America? Would someone please remind the Alaskan Governor that she is running for Vice-President of the United States and not the local chapter of the Nazi Lowriders? Her rally supporters are shouting the “N” word at Obama labeling him a “Terrorist” and calling for his assasination and for his decapitation. Isn’t it a federal crime to threaten the life of a U.S. Senator and Presidential Candidate? And, isn’t it a moral crime if not a criminal act to incite a crowd to the point of threatening violence on your political opposition?

Governor-EnergyExpert-PalinIsFailin

“Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, touted by GOP presidential candidate John McCain as his expert on energy, seemed to have problems Thursday explaining whether the government bans oil exports — especially from her state’s North Slope fields.

A questioner at a town hall-style meeting in Wisconsin said he had heard that at least 75 percent of the oil drilled in Alaska was being sold to China and said, if true, he would like to know why.

“No. It’s not 75 percent of our oil being exported,” Palin said, suggesting some of Alaska’s oil, in fact, may be going abroad but not that much.

“In fact,” she added, “Congress is pretty strict on, um, export bans of oil and gas especially.”

No Alaska oil has been exported since 2004 according to the Energy Information Administration and the Congressional Research Service, but Congress never imposed outright bans on oil exports. Congress prohibited exports of Alaska oil in 1973 when the Alaska oil pipeline was built. But that ban was lifted in 1996 when there were large volumes of Alaska oil coming down from the North Slope and U.S. demand was soft.

But she can probably see oil bans from her kitchen window.”

Exactly right about the oil companies not wanting to increase the supply
because it would lower price. But even if they drilled their brains out
to increase supply OPEC could decrease output to keep the price wherever they want it to be. Do you remember a few months ago the head Saudi guy said he would like to see the price at $70? They would like it lower to increase demand
and try to quell the move towards other energy sources. IMHO

Oct. 10, 2008 PALMER, Alaska — | On the afternoon of Sept. 24 in downtown Palmer, Alaska, as the sun began to sink behind the snowcapped mountains that flank the picturesque Mat-Su Valley, 51-year-old Mark Chryson sat for an hour on a park bench, reveling in tales of his days as chairman of the Alaska Independence Party. The stocky, gray-haired computer technician waxed nostalgic about quixotic battles to eliminate taxes, support the “traditional family” and secede from the United States.

So long as Alaska remained under the boot of the federal government, said Chryson, the AIP had to stand on guard to stymie a New World Order. He invited a Salon reporter to see a few items inside his pickup truck that were intended for his personal protection. “This here is my attack dog,” he said with a chuckle, handing the reporter an exuberant 8-pound papillon from his passenger seat. “Her name is Suzy.” Then he pulled a 9-millimeter Makarov PM pistol — once the standard-issue sidearm for Soviet cops — out of his glove compartment. “I’ve got enough weaponry to raise a small army in my basement,” he said, clutching the gun in his palm. “Then again, so do most Alaskans.” But Chryson added a message of reassurance to residents of that faraway place some Alaskans call “the 48.” “We want to go our separate ways,” he said, “but we are not going to kill you.”

Though Chryson belongs to a fringe political party, one that advocates the secession of Alaska from the Union, and that organizes with other like-minded secessionist movements from Canada to the Deep South, he is not without peculiar influence in state politics, especially the rise of Sarah Palin. An obscure figure outside of Alaska, Chryson has been a political fixture in the hometown of the Republican vice-presidential nominee for over a decade. During the 1990s, when Chryson directed the AIP, he and another radical right-winger, Steve Stoll, played a quiet but pivotal role in electing Palin as mayor of Wasilla and shaping her political agenda afterward. Both Stoll and Chryson not only contributed to Palin’s campaign financially, they played major behind-the-scenes roles in the Palin camp before, during and after her victory.

Palin backed Chryson as he successfully advanced a host of anti-tax, pro-gun initiatives, including one that altered the state Constitution’s language to better facilitate the formation of anti-government militias. She joined in their vendetta against several local officials they disliked, and listened to their advice about hiring. She attempted to name Stoll, a John Birch Society activist known in the Mat-Su Valley as “Black Helicopter Steve,” to an empty Wasilla City Council seat. “Every time I showed up her door was open,” said Chryson. “And that policy continued when she became governor.”

When Chryson first met Sarah Palin, however, he didn’t really trust her politically. It was the early 1990s, when he was a member of a local libertarian pressure group called SAGE, or Standing Against Government Excess. (SAGE’s founder, Tammy McGraw, was Palin’s birth coach.) Palin was a leader in a pro-sales-tax citizens group called WOW, or Watch Over Wasilla, earning a political credential before her 1992 campaign for City Council. Though he was impressed by her interpersonal skills, Chryson greeted Palin’s election warily, thinking she was too close to the Democrats on the council and too pro-tax.

But soon, Palin and Chryson discovered they could be useful to each other. Palin would be running for mayor, while Chryson was about to take over the chairmanship of the Alaska Independence Party, which at its peak in 1990 had managed to elect a governor.

The AIP was born of the vision of “Old Joe” Vogler, a hard-bitten former gold miner who hated the government of the United States almost as much as he hated wolves and environmentalists. His resentment peaked during the early 1970s when the federal government began installing Alaska’s oil and gas pipeline. Fueled by raw rage — “The United States has made a colony of Alaska,” he told author John McPhee in 1977 — Vogler declared a maverick candidacy for the governorship in 1982. Though he lost, Old Joe became a force to be reckoned with, as well as a constant source of amusement for Alaska’s political class. During a gubernatorial debate in 1982, Vogler proposed using nuclear weapons to obliterate the glaciers blocking roadways to Juneau. “There’s gold under there!” he exclaimed.

Vogler made another failed run for the governor’s mansion in 1986. But the AIP’s fortunes shifted suddenly four years later when Vogler convinced Richard Nixon’s former interior secretary, Wally Hickel, to run for governor under his party’s banner. Hickel coasted to victory, outflanking a moderate Republican and a centrist Democrat. An archconservative Republican running under the AIP candidate, Jack Coghill, was elected lieutenant governor.

Hickel’s subsequent failure as governor to press for a vote on Alaskan independence rankled Old Joe. With sponsorship from the Islamic Republic of Iran, Vogler was scheduled to present his case for Alaskan secession before the United Nations General Assembly in the late spring of 1993. But before he could, Old Joe’s long, strange political career ended tragically that May when he was murdered by a fellow secessionist.

Hickel rejoined the Republican Party the year after Vogler’s death and didn’t run for reelection. Lt. Gov. Coghill’s campaign to succeed him as the AIP candidate for governor ended in disaster; he peeled away just enough votes from the Republican, Jim Campbell, to throw the gubernatorial election to Democrat Tony Knowles.

Despite the disaster, Coghill hung on as AIP chairman for three more years. When he was asked to resign in 1997, Mark Chryson replaced him. Chryson pursued a dual policy of cozying up to secessionist and right-wing groups in Alaska and elsewhere while also attempting to replicate the AIP’s success with Hickel in infiltrating the mainstream.

Unlike some radical right-wingers, Chryson doesn’t put forward his ideas freighted with anger or paranoia. And in a state where defense of gun and property rights often takes on a real religious fervor, Chryson was able to present himself as a typical Alaskan.

He rose through party ranks by reducing the AIP’s platform to a single page that “90 percent of Alaskans could agree with.” This meant scrubbing the old platform of what Chryson called “racist language” while accommodating the state’s growing Christian right movement by emphasizing the AIP’s commitment to the “traditional family.”

“The AIP is very family-oriented,” Chryson explained. “We’re for the traditional family — daddy, mommy, kids — because we all know that it was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. And we don’t care if Heather has two mommies. That’s not a traditional family.”

Chryson further streamlined the AIP’s platform by softening its secessionist language. Instead of calling for immediate separation from the United States, the platform now demands a vote on independence.

Yet Chryson maintains that his party remains committed to full independence. “The Alaskan Independence Party has got links to almost every independence-minded movement in the world,” Chryson exclaimed. “And Alaska is not the only place that’s about separation. There’s at least 30 different states that are talking about some type of separation from the United States.”

Don’t worry, Cassie. While you snooze, Palin pays her dues.

Aussie – the more Palin and the mccainiacs rip Halcro, the more I like him.

Random thought. Imagine if the economic crisis cascades into a complete collapse, and then we also end up in an election mess like in 2000. No clear winner but this time with tens of thousands of provisional ballots in dispute in mutiple juridictions. Riots? Martial law? Reds and Blues fighting in the streets?

Well, see, the big difference is that there is a serious legal investigation into Palin’s situation and she has “cleared herself. In terms of Obama and that ridiculous claim, it is only the GOP mobs who say it. And those people don’t really believe he’s a “terrorist.” They don’t. They are just racists. That’s their “code.” Aren’t they clever? Gosh, none of us can see through it, can we?

You beat me to posting the link to the Salon article Michelle. It appears as if there may still be a journalist or two left in this country as well as a publication that is strong enough to print it.

It’s time the MSM stops giving a pass to Palin and her race baiting comments about Obama and looks into her honest relationship to terrorists and secessionists. Palin’s hyperbole about Obama doesn’t hold a candle to her and her husband’s affiliation with people who are truly intent on tearing a part of this country away and they’re working from within as card carrying Republicans (or at least as soon as Sarah realized she needed the help of the thugs and of course Todd is unaffiliated).

This article that Michelle linked to is the best researched piece I have seen on a political candidate in ages. If the hardline Republicans can honestly look at Palin’s background and not think there is a problem then there is no hope for them. This article should do to Palin what the Deep Throat and Woodward and Bernstein did to Nixon. Of course that was back when Americans could read and reason independently so I’m not quite sure in this day and age that anyone or anything can get through to the lockstep 20%’ers.

In case you didn’t link to it from Michelle’s post and don’t want to go up and find it here it is:

Wooten can take the Palins to court for defamation but given his record, I suspect any such lawsuit won’t last very long.

He’d have better success going after Sarah Palin and the State for releasing his personnel file without his authorization (although Todd Palin claimed Wooten released his own records). He could also go after them for intentional infliction of emotiona distress and invasion of privacy for pressuring the WC owner to deny what appeared to be a valid WC claim but who knows how that would turn out given his poor reputation.

Wooten, I believe, is a turd.

But that gives neither Palin a valid or legal reason to harass him or invade his privacy.

from that salon article…
“The following year, when Carney proposed a local gun-control measure, Palin organized with Chryson to smother the nascent plan in its cradle. Carney’s proposed ordinance would have prohibited residents from carrying guns into schools, bars, hospitals, government offices and playgrounds. Infuriated by the proposal that Carney viewed as a common-sense public-safety measure, Chryson and seven allies stormed a July 1997 council meeting.”

The article goes on to say how Palin fought for this “pal” to be allowed to talk against said ordinance.

Ok…when someone wants to carry a gun into a SCHOOL or playground…I’m sorry I want some GUN control!

‘Hispanics turn cold shoulder to McCain

Despite championing immigration reform in 2007, John McCain is poised to lose the Hispanic vote by a landslide margin that is well below President George W. Bush’s 2004 performance. Polls show Obama winning the broadest support from Latino voters of any Democrat in a decade, while McCain is struggling to reach 30 percent, closer to Senator Bob Dole’s dismal 1996 result than to Bush’s historic 40% four years ago.

McCain seems to have wound up with the worst of both worlds: He appears to be getting no credit from Latino voters for his past support for immigration reform, while carrying the baggage of other Republicans’ hostility to illegal immigration.

As October puts four states with large Hispanic populations – Florida, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico – at the center of the presidential contest, what appeared at first to be a possible strength for McCain has emerged as a profound weakness.

I know this comment is low, but inciting hate and fear by inferring Obama has terrorist ties by using his middle name is the bottom of the barrel.

I suppose if Sarah can declare herself the mother of Trig (sweet, innocent boy) then she can declare herself completely blemish free in Troopergate.

This whole election has me torn in two. On the one hand I wish with all my might that the Obama campaign would sink to the same level as the McPalin’s have. Publicize McCain’s brain gaffe’s, target mcCain’s lurid associations, demand the baby’s birth certificate, emphasize the ties to AIP, show the Couric interview over & over.

On the other hand, I truly admire Obama/Biden for taking the high road. Last night I was thinking that their failure to publicize SPs flaws may actually be because she doesn’t matter. They won’t even bother with the Gov of Alaska ’cause she’s a joke and spending any energy acknowledging her would be a waste. I think this other hand is heavier tonight. It is pretty easy to think of her as a joke and a waste.

This site is amazing. Thoughtful, informed, intelligent posts. You all have truly provided hope in dark times. Thanks AKM!

The worst dream ever:

This how it will go..

Fast forward to Jan 20, 2009..

McCain/Palin cheated and weaseled their way to the White House. They hop in the Limo and head off to their first official briefing. McCain says he wants to see the residence, and him and his pal Sarah head upstairs to see the residence.

After looking around, they head back down. Sarah says “Let me help you John” and as they head down, she slips a foot in front of McOld. He tumbles down the marble stairway, cracks his head open and is dead before reaching the bottom.

Sarah, looking shocked, stands at the top of the stairs and says ‘Golly gosh, doggone it, the poor guy slipped and geepers creepers, I really tried to grab him, but dang, i missed. I am now President, and all of you lemmings report to me. I hereby rule that I am in charge and all rules of order are suspended. Congress is fired and I am in charge of the military, just like I was in Alaska. Bow before me, ya all..” Wink wink wink.

She smiles, knowing it worked out just as she planned it. Her first order is to have all video logs of the white house destroyed immediately without review.

AAAAhhhhh HA HAHA too funny…

Keeping Lady Liberty in my thoughts tonight, and hopeful for a good outcome tomorrow.

A word about my hometown… Whenever you hear the republican code – don’t trust a “Chicago Politician” (McFailin still thinks it’s the 1920’s) look up our “other” Senator Dick Durban and his accomplishments for all Americans. Our outstanding Mayor governs 3 million people of every heritage and background, with 315,000 business establishments, including over 30 Fortune 500 headquarters. In America, Chicago is #1 in manufacturing, #1 in business service professionals, #1 high-tech workforce, #1 distribution center, #2 in passenger air, and the #2 financial center in the nation.
We have the cleanest city, a model recycling program, and expanded green roofing systems by 2 million square feet last year! Ohh geez, gosh darn, that’s bigger than Wasilly. We have something Sarah never saw before too, public libraries, and a little place called The Art Institute for us elites. And if your lucky you might even know some famous folks.

Had Sarah ever read a book called a dictionary, she would have known that a “Dude” is a … Easterner or city person who vacations on a ranch in the West. *American Heritage Dictionary* What a moron.

I admire your lil site AKM, keep up the great work Alaska!

A new article in the NYT indicates that the worst that can happen to Palin is a censure and/or passage of new legislation to keep her from doing this kind of stuff. Very wrist-slappy, it sounds like. What might be more interesting is the bidding process for the state’s worker’s comp insurance. If she offered a quid pro quo to one company for denying Wooten’s benefits, that would be a criminal act.

The story is that she spoke to the WC person (Murlene ) who DID cancel Wooten’s WC, then, a $1.5 million contract was awarded by the state to Murlene’s company, and then, Murlene re-instated Wooten’s WC.
There were lower bids for the same contract.
Was the awarding of the contract based on Wooten’s WC getting cut-off?
Have to wait for Murlene’s testimony, I guess, but it sure looks that way.

So, if you’re sick of Palinbashing, how about some fair time McOldbashing??

Adulterer
For a guy campaigning on family values, John McCain has broken up a lot of marriages. When he met his first wife (a swimsuit model), she was married to another man. After breaking that marriage up, she stuck by him loyally as he went off to war and was a prisoner for 5 and a half years. When he returned to America, though, he found out that she had been in a car wreck and wasn’t as pretty. So he had a series of affairs, by his own admission, and dumped his wife and adopted family for a younger, very rich blond (now Cindy McCain.) Cindy, the daughter of a wealthy Budweiser beer distributor, was addicted to prescription narcotics and even stole hard drugs from a medical charity that she ran. In February, 2008, the New York Times ran a big article about the unusually close relationship between John McCain and a young telecommunications lobbyist named Vicki Iseman (who looks uncannily like Cindy McCain did when SHE was 25). They became so close that his staff, convinced they were having an affair, confronted both McCain and Iseman, telling them to back off. Now, a lot of people have criticized the Times for hinting without actually saying that McCain had sexual relations with that woman. But really, it doesn’t matter. It’s a matter of record that he accepted money and favors from her, spent a lot of time for her, and did favors for her clients. Among other things, McCain wrote two letters — from a draft provided by Vicki Iseman — to the head of the Federal Communications Commission — which was way out of line, since McCain headed the Senate Commmerce Committee, which controls the FCC. McCain’s pressure was so outrageous that, even though McCain was in charge of funding his commission, the FCC commissioner wrote a letter back rebuking him for his interference, at the height of McCain’s “ethics in government” campaign.
So, was McCain sleeping with her, hoping to sleep with her, or being subconsciously manipulated by a cute young woman? It doesn’t really matter. He was being led by his groin into ethical violations. Let’s face it, he was 64 at the time and is 72 now. Whether he is still cheating or not, he seems to be led by his dick; witness the videos of McCain checking out Sarah Palin’s butt during the speech where he introduced her.

I read that line twice myself. Here’s the quote from the NY Times: “Beyond the potential political consequences, the Legislature’s inquiry, depending on its outcome, could lead lawmakers to censure Ms. Palin or pass legislation making it more difficult for a governor to remove a commissioner, legislative leaders said.”

These are possibilities, but not the only possibilities…. I agree with you the the workers’ comp issue is a very big deal and potentially her grand finale.

And now, McDementia has had two “senior moments” two days in a row. First, by switching American and prisoners, and then by saying Obama instead of Palin at a rally. Both instances are on display in video for all to see.

I’m starting to think that the purpose of this is not to try to whip up votes, but rather to incite enough hate for the election to be delayed. That way, if people get scared enough, they might switch their votes to McCain.

It’s important to remember that these are legislative hearings by the Alaskan Senate. Their recommendations have to focus on legislative issues and can include a censure. After that others can take up issues of recalls or perhaps moves to impeach. However those have to be dealt with separately. Think of this in terms of the Ervin Committee hearings prior to Nixon’s impeachment hearings and subsequent resignation. If enough stuff comes out, there will be a move to take further action. The process is slow but justice has to be seen to be served and all involved deserve fair trials – not just the sort of kangaroo court Sarah would like to run. It would be interesting if this attempt to subvert things through manipulating the panel leads to further action by the legislature. There is so much deja vus here it’s almost frightening.

This kinda fits all the bullcrap going on..:

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.

We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. They have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone

If you ever get discouraged about the crazed things some people say, and one side not responding so quickly to attacks, take comfort – this Presidential election is the *very first* with a characteristic shown to good advantage by AKM. I speculate that this is:

2008: THE FIRST (presidential) YOUTUBE ELECTION
(YouTube started in 2005).

The Web has already made a great deal of past history available for perusal by people other than dedicated reporters, but there is *no* easy believability substitute for people to be able to post and find relevant video footage quickly. When you read a press report or secondhand blog about a speech, you always have to compare several or read someone you really trust …

… and it still isn’t quite the same as seeing Gov. Palin’s video for the AIP, or the witch-finder ones, or Katie Couric’s interviews, or ….

Of course, having long worked for a computer company whose products were used to make most of the realistic movie special effects, you can’t believe everything you see or hear.

Still, a great deal of original, unfiltered audio + video is placed where the public can see and propagate it widely. Of course, this also means junk gets propagated, and people have to learn to deal with that, and watch out for cherry-picking of video footage. A downside is that it may favor even more telegenic politicians good in front of cameras, but we already have that.

But it does mean that the real video is available, and the continually-lower cost of cameras and communications has taken video out of the restricted-for-professionals realm. TV changed the game from radio, the Web added another dimension, and YoUTube+cheap cameras is Something Else. It makes it harder to get away with saying really dumb or hateful things.

EFFECT ON EXTREMES VERSUS MODERATES
Political extremes tend to yell louder, sometimes to the point of xenophobia, for limited audiences that want that, then pull back towards the center to get elected. After all, in many states, there are actually more people in the center than at extremes, and most elections need some votes from them.

Many people might like more centrist candidates, except that electoral processes have increasingly not let them through the primaries, except by a cases like Arnold Schnwarzenegger (never could have gotten through CA Republican primary), or maybe Mike Bloomberg. If one is a centrist swing voter, it is really nice to actually have a choice of two reasonable candidates, or at least one.

YOUTUBE ELECTION MINUSES AND PLUSSES
So: A YouTube Election:
disfavors
– telling totally different stories in different places and times
– changing stories too quickly, shoot-from-hip reactions
– rabble-rousing divisiveness, overly-negative campaigning, especially that doesn’t stand up (Swing voters tend not to like it).

favors
-reasonable consistency
-thinking, planning, taking a reasoned position, and staying calm
-more emphasis on positive campaigns

BECAUSE: smile, you’re on Candid Camera, to be uploaded 10 minutes later.

That’s the general case, and I think it will have some long-term beneficial effects, given that it’s hard to win a campaign without talking to the public, although people try. Some forms of political chicanery will get harder, although most likely new ones will get invented. Different politicians will or will not adapt quickly.

AND FOR 2008
I think one of the two Presidential candidates understands YouTube Elections perfectly well, and the other not in the slightest, and if

Last time I needed one, there was no Greyhound to Anchorage. You have to go to the end of the line in Whitehorse, then get on the “short bus’, that runs from Whitehorse to Anchorage (takes another 12- 14 hours) and used to fall off the road regularly, due to trying to make a too-tight schedule in bad road conditions. That bus ride in snow, on either side of the border, isn’t for the faint of heart! LOL

the dem congress recently voted on the offshore drilling because the KNEW oil companies would not go there….it’s about PROFIT

Why bother drilling ??? we can’t refine it if we had it … Never heard build a refinery baby build .. What would we do with a bunch of oil if we can’t keep up with refining now ?? ship it to china ???

9 10 2008
Deb

“world market” is only one factor of oil price…..we can always go back to supply and demand theory….and since the u.s. demands so much of it…we actually drive the price higher…especially in the summer vacation months…..so, historically, prices go down in the fall…..

shhhh.. You’ll make Barbie go crazy.. They think they can have drilling working in 90 days. Just because there’s nothing to do WITH it is irrelevant.

Their drill baby drill message is totally flawed.. Obviously, needing refinery capacity would be mandatory, but here’s the rub.

If Alaska could pump 10 times it’s current capacity, that would only add 2-3% to the total USA consumption, so what difference would it make?? We’d still be buying most of our oil elsewhere.

I also recall something about North Slope Oil isn’t well suited for gas production and it goes overseas for other production uses.. Could be wrong but it seems to be in my old brain cells somewhere.

If the world is going to end, fine. I just hope it ends before I have to get up for work on a bleak, cold, icy, nasty Monday morning. Then I am fine with that. So you are not going to scare me. I was in The Chosin Reservoir in Korea, surrounded by Chinese attacking us at night in 30 degree below zero temps and we ate food that was frozen solid and we had dysentery and diarrhea. We had only ice we had to melt for water. We marched for 70 miles and had frostbite. So the world ending, piece of cake, bring it on fruitcakes.

9 10 2008

so…if we drill, baby, drill and can’t access that oil until (and the estimates I’ve read vary from 2013-2018) that’s a good 5-10 years away from any relief…given no “glitches” in production, refinement, etc

“the McCain campaign goes into great detail about the “rogue” trooper and his “long history of unstable and erratic behavior.”

If that sentence didn’t have the words “rogue trooper” in it, you would have thought the campaign was talking of their own candidate.

What a shame — this hateful, vindictive, negative old man campaigning will be the legacy of John McCain — he who destroyed the party due to his unstable and erratic behavior. The other senators and house members up for re-election are supposed to be able to depend on the Leader of the Party. RE: Drill, baby, drill

For those who like *good* information on oil, see Cutler Cleveland on drilling – is offshore drilling the answer? and TheOilDrum in general. Cleveland is a well-known professor who has done a lot of work on energy.

For Alaska specifically, see Gil Mul’s slides on Alaska oil.

“Gil Mull is a retired senior petroleum geologist who has worked for the oil industry, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Alaska Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys and the Alaska Division of Oil and Gas. He has over 40 years of field experience in oil and gas exploration, specializing in the geology of Northern Alaska, including the North Slope, the Brooks Range, the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPRA) and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). ”

I.e., he spent most of his professional career doing Alaskan oil. Think hard about slides 16-17.

This was from a worthy ASPO conference I attended a few weeks ago. There are many good slide sets, like those of : Jeremy Gilbert recently retired BP Chief Engineer.

Maybe Sarah Palin knows more than such folks about oil, but I doubt it.
====
Drill, baby, drill; drill here, drill quick = leave (almost) nothing for the great-children, and probably not much for the grandchildren.

Please,AK folks may want to invest oil revenues while they exist into an infrastructure that makes sense when there is almost no oil left. I wouldn’t guess what you want that to look like, but I hope someone is starting to think about it.

If you don’t, your great-grandchildren (say 2100) either aren’t going to be living in AK or they won’t be living with anything like the same lifestyle. You need to look at US DOE Energy Consumption per capita by state in 2005 and notice AK’s position in rightmost column.

AK is 3X+ higher in BTU/person than the US average (including MI and MN, which are not far from average), 5X+ higher than California or NY. Weather makes a big difference of course, but so does paying attention to efficiency…

Says that is the only way to get those ignorant neo-con Repubs to sit down & shut up! I say it’s the only way to get the Repubs to sit down and ask some questions that are seriously in need of asking, such as “where are we going in this party?” “what do we really stand for” “how are we going to get this party & our country back on track?” and many many more…

I say this as a former Republican who was NEVER going to vote for McLame, and did not vote GWB a second time! My husband & I often used to agree to disagree when it came to politics, but in this election we are perfectly in sync!

I am confident that the Latino vote alongside the youth vote will sway Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and even Florida Obama’s way. The surprise here is the Cuban vote which is traditionally Republican is now firmly for Obama. The Republicans thought they could sway Latinos of all nationa origin (Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, etc.) against Obama thinking they could exploit some sort of racial divide against brown and black people. What they were too dumb to realize is that brown and black people always unite against the cops. Sarah Palin reminds Latinos of every mean, racist white woman they have ever come across and McCain too timid to police Palin’s racism reminds Latinos of every white man without a backbone to stand up for “the least of these.” Sarah Palin may have shored up the Republican base (those 26% of Americans that still believe George W. Bush is doing a good job) but in doing so she united African-Americans and Latinos. McCain’s pick of S. Palin guaranteed the Democrats the White House for at least the next 8 years and probably 12. I figure it is going to take a good 10 years for the Republicans to recover from this one. Meanwhile they will be losing plenty of Congressional seats as well as local and state elections.

10 10 2008
Big Al of LV, NV

I meant “unite against bad policing.” MY MISTAKE! African-Americans, Latinos and all fair-minded people unite against bad policing and McCain is not doing a good job of policing his running mate’s anti-Obama rhettoric. That is what is ticking off Latinos especially and why Obama is going to win the Latino vote by a landslide all acorss this nation. This is a major problem for McCain’s long-term image and the long-term image of the Republican party. I have even heard pundits say that Palin’s anti-Obama rhetoric may spark off violence. Can’t these politicians just stick to the issues? As an independent, I understand Obama’s need to defend himself against the Palin/McCain’s nasty comments. But, somebody needs to be the adult here – McCain! – and put Country First! If Palin has become too big of a figure to police, then McCain needs to be the adult admit he made a mistake and ask for Palin’s resignation for the good of the country. THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!

Today I was leaving work to come home for lunch and a Truck had blocked me in so I couldn’t pull out. They were looking and pointing at my home made “MCSAME 95% of the time” Poster with a picture of Bush hugging McCain (you know the one). I cautiously approached and asked if I could help and the little sweet senior points to my car and announces ‘I LOVE that poster, who’s car is that?”
After heaving a sigh of relief, because I really don’t want to pick a fight with anyone’s grandmother, I told her it was mine. I explained I made it and she expressed a desire to have it. I gladly removed it from my car and she promptly placed in in the rear window of her truck and she and her husband, dressed all in red white and blue I might add, honked at me and said, “Thank You Dear!”
I swear I hear them exclaim as they drove out of sight, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”
My bosses g/f was pulling out of the driveway and witnessed it all and just looked at me and said, “Maybe there is hope after all.” , then she patted her pregnant belly and drove off.
