Palin Meets Couric

Just for fun, see if you can watch this without putting your palms on your face.  Other than that, I am rendered speechless.

it was hard to hear what she was saying with all that “blizzard of words”! HA!

So, how’s everyone feeling about Sen McCain’s pick these days? Or his ‘first executive decision? Mwahahhahahahahhahahahaaaa!

I simply do not see how anyone can take her seriously anymore. Or Sen. McCain for that matter…

The desperation in Palin’s whole demeanor is agonizing. I used to work for a small city paper and I interviewed career municipal councilors with more savvy than that. “I’ll find some examples and I’ll bring ’em to yah!” What the hell was that?! Here-check this out:

VP Palin: “Mister President of Iran–we want you to scrap your nuclear arms program.”

President of Iran: “Why should I? Can you tell me if the Israelis will disarm at the same time? How will I know your word is good?”

VP Palin: “I’ll find some examples and I’ll bring ’em to yah!”

Now THAT’S diplomacy.

Oh. My. Gosh. Horrifying.

How is this freakin’ possible?

And now McCain is trying to delay–er, cancel, cough, cough–the VP debate?

Wow, I’ll take an Obama win, but this election should be a landslide. How is it that there can be any supporters for this ticket, based on both their own performance and the Republican/Bush record?

Unbelievable.

With regard to witchcraft, Sarah’s witch hunting friend from Kenya, Preacher Muthee, implies rather strongly that Jews are good at gaining and hoarding wealth, and that good Christians should move into business and take it over. As couched at
the Daily Kos website it borders on the anti-Semitic. I wonder how Joe Lieberman likes it.

Palin is starting to sound scared to me – voice constricted in her throat – deer in the headlights look – trouble putting sentences together. (Not that putting sentences together was ever her strong suit – but still…).

I think she is starting to realize how badly she is out of her depth – and that she is never going to be VP.

I have to agree with the person above who said that Katie looked totally disgusted and contemptuous. Can you blame the poor girl? She must have been with her for hours & hours trying to get something that was acceptable for airing — and that was IT!

All of the tacky hand movements were so annoying. Note to handlers: tell her to keep her hands clasped in her lap at all times!

And she is utterly incapable of preventing herself from belittling Obama. That is her answer to every pointed question, turn it around into a negative directed at Obama. What an infant! She is like so many other icky repubs — if they don’t like you, take it as a compliment!

Watch Letterman TONIGHT! If you can’t the best parts are condensed here:

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=XjkCrfylq-E

He makes an EXTREMELY good point. Don’t suspend your campaign to go off and solve a crisis. If one happens while you are President, and you are absent, then your VP should take over right. Unless leaving the handling of the campaign (country) means that when you return there will be NO campaign (country) to return to!

Tortured by it all

That was so humiliating I had to look away. I detest everything Palin stands for, and the thought of her being one death away from President terrifies me. And yet for the first time I feel sorry for her (and disgust with myself for feeling that way). I still want her ticket to crash and burn, but when it does–please God–let’s make sure the blame goes where it really belongs, with John McCain. Garrison Keillor sums the problem up perfectly for me (and injects a necessary dose of reality about the Palin pick) in his article ‘Where is the Outrage’ on Salon:

“What we are seeing is the stuff of a novel, the public corruption of an American war hero. It is painful. First, there was his exploitation of a symbolic woman, an eager zealot who is so far out of her depth that it isn’t funny anymore. Anyone with a heart has to hurt for how Mr. McCain has made a fool of her. Never mind the persistent cheesiness of his attack ads. And now this chasm of debt and loss and the gentleman pretends to be shocked. He was there. He turned out the lights. He sent the regulators home.”

Preparation of Benazir Bhutto, former prime minister of Pakistan and slain wife of the current president of Pakistan who said Palin was hot–

Well, no one will be able to accuse Biden of rambling on in the debates, if there will be one. Palin will look even greener compared to him.

Her performance in this interview was “breathtaking” and not in a good way. This makes me think of the Seinfeld episode where the pediatrician that Elaine likes keeps referring to the ugly baby as breathtaking and to Elaine as breathtaking. The republicans see her as breathtaking and we see her for the ugly baby that she really is.

This video should be on endless loop on cable TV. It would be unbearable, but a public service nonetheless. There isn’t a person reading this blog who couldn’t have done a better job than that. She evidently can’t even learn talking points.

I haven’t been much of a Katie Couric fan since she did a sweetheart interview with George Bush early in her days as anchor. The look on her face was priceless, like she couldn’t believe what she is hearing. The mainstream media just can’t drink the Palin kool-aid any more because even they have to be terrified of these two empty heads getting into the White House.

You’ve gotta give it to Katie for reminding Palin that Obama went up in the polls after the financial crash, not McCain – and asking why she concluded people were waiting for McCain’s solution. Palin had no answer – just a swipe at Obama. She made a stupid statement that Katie exposed for what it was. And yes, Katie did a great job. Her look said, “I can’t believe I am sitting here asking you these things and you are incapable of having an intelligent discussion – and you’re the VP candidate!”

I just posted this on the last thread before I figured out everyone else had left 🙂

Okay, you can all take your shots at me – I am ready.

That said, I am starting to feel sorry for John McCain. I know. I can hardly believe I am saying that, but he wasn’t always the man he is today…at least he didn’t seem to be.

Yes, I know about his bad temper and wild youthful, fly-boy antics, his “unworthy” acts while a POW, his betrayal of his first wife and family – I do know. However, for the most part, I do believe he loves this country (probably at 72-years-old, he loves it more than ever), and he used to be a straight-shooter. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t agree with him most of the time, but he seemed like a man who was willing to stand up for his convictions and take the heat if necessary.

Now he simply seems like a very old, tired, pathetic man who has “sold-out” and has been “handled” by the best the neo-cons have to offer. John McCain does not look well. Watch his announcement from today. I think this race is killing him (and if the race doesn’t, Sarah will). I could simply never imagine this man as our president.

Go ahead…

prior: I don’t think she stupid, but she doesn’t seem to be absorbing all contents of the crash course the GOP has been giving her.

I agree – she isnt stupid. She’s actually doing a pretty good job of follwoing the crash course. It’s kind of like being given a month between being admitted to a PH.D program and defending your dissertation. I had trouble cramming for one course that I attended most of hte time and did most of the homework. But this is not a course, but an entire undergraduate education without any labs (being governor of 600,000 when you don’t show up for work doesn’t count. And behying mayor of 5,000 people when you higher an Administrator to actually run teh city doesn’t count either.

She isn’t stupid, but she isn’t well-informed, or curious, or prone to analysis and she is so totally over-her-head.

No, I know what you mean. It’s like a Greek tragedy where the hero is undone by some fatal, internal flaw.

Why has McCain changed so much?

I often wonder if it’s the never ending quest to live up to his father and grandfather’s legacy because he feels insignificant, and feels that he’s always in competition against their achievements.

It seemed like he was such a screw up before he was a POW. Almost like he was purposefully rebelling against his father and grandfather’s expectations of him. But why would he do that? Maybe he felt like he could never live up to their legacy so he decided to beat them in the only way he could–by being a screw-up.

Then he became a POW, and thought “Hey, now, I’m important, too.” But still not as important as dad/grandad, so he became a senator. He found a way to compete and win against other senators–by being the lone “maverick” who was willing to chart his own path. This made him very popular.

But he still wasn’t good enough. So he decided to run for President. At the worst possible time. But losing the election is the worst possible thing. He has to be better than his dad/grandad, better than other Senators, and better than all other politicians and U.S. citizens in order to feel that he’s not a failure and that’s he matters and has significance.

He is sacrificing his “honor” because although he values his “honor” a lot, the driving force in his life is that he doesn’t measure up, he’s not good enough, he has to win, so he’ll trade his honor to feel significant.

One of the saddest political transformations I’ve ever seen is McCain from 2000 to 2008. I’ve never agreed w/ most of his policies, either, but until he this year, I always considered him a (mostly) honorable man. Now he just seems old, pathetic, and an opportunist.

SP? I think maybe she didn’t really think about whether or not she was qualified for the job – she just felt “called” to accept the nomination. (So of course, she didn’t blink.) And that’s even scarier.

what the hell was the part about “America is waiting on John McCain to tell them where he stands on this bailout” and saying that they aren’t waiting on Obama. Couric called her out a bit about why she thinks that….although she actually stated it as a known fact and not an opinion. Of course she goes into some rhetoric about experience and blah blah blah. That part was almost as crazy as the “I’ll get back to ya” line. It was completely fabricated by her in her imagination but presented like she had actually gone out and taken the pulse of the American people. When Couric used factual poll numbers to combat her, she said “I’m not going by polls”….wha wha wha what? Typical Rovian move…..when presented with factual evidence that destroys the sentence you just uttered, act like you did not hear the facts or that you just don’t believe them. Then continue rhetoric, smile and chuckle.

From Anchorage. We can laugh at her all we want, but she has a record of getting away with this kind of drivel. Her performance in the gubenatorial (sp?) was not good and yet her she is. Andrew Halcro speaks of this in an LA Time article:

“… Palin has a “sort of Reaganesque, kind of Teflon quality,” due to her charm and “force of personality.”

Indeed, Halcro said, those qualities meant that debating Palin was an exercise in frustration. The day after a debate in Fairbanks, they found themselves in conversation at a breakfast in Anchorage.

“She said, ‘You know, I go to these debates, and I’m just amazed at your grasp of issues and facts. You show up with no notecards; you just kind of spurt it out. But I look out over the audience, and I wonder: Is that really important?’ ” Halcro said. “And you know, I’m a policy guy, and I’m thinking, ‘Yeah.’ But people didn’t care. She has a way of walking in a room and filling the room with her presence, so people suddenly forget about their concerns about healthcare or education or anything else.””

I can’t believe that John McCain put this woman up on the altar of GOP Politricks to see her immolate little by little each day.

I like reading all the comments – you guys are funny – but one thing you’re missing is the point that diehard Repubs don’t get the joke. They really believe she’s great. They actually like her.

I was astounded this afternoon when a friend who I thought was only semi-Republican and not very political (we don’t usually talk politics) asked me not to send her anymore articles and links because she is “a Republican and will always be a Republican.”

She went on to say she likes Sarah Palin. The part that really hurt was when, in my shocked state (knowing how she loves animals), I blurted, “but she’s for killing the wolves…” my friend paused, then said, “I really don’t care. I don’t want to live in the United Socialist Republic of America. Let’s just agree to disagree.”

Well, I’m mortified. But there you have it. Some folks are diehard Republicans and here we are, amazed that people actually like Palin, like what she stands for, and think she’s intelligent, capable, etc. It seems crazy, but that’s the way it is. Some people will never be open to seeing the truth.

It makes me sad, angry, frustrated, but then I remind myself, there are some people who will listen, want to see for themselves and can be turned onto the truth. That’s what keeps me sane. That and Mudflats! Thank you AKM for your place of refuge in the eye of this political storm.

I REALLY REALLY hope that at the vp debate she mentions Hillary Clinton so Biden can pull one out of Lloyd Benson’s playbook from his debate with Dan Quayle, but instead of referencing JFK, Biden can toss out, “I know Hillary Clinton. Something is terrifically wrong in Manchurian land…

This story came out just after Bush’s speech, saying we’ve got a plan ready to go:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080925/pl_nm/us_financial_bailout_deal_1

“All of sudden, now that we are on the verge of making a deal, John McCain here drops himself in to help us make a deal,” (Rep. Barney) Frank said.

He expressed fear that McCain, a U.S. senator from Arizona who has spent much of the year away from the Capitol campaigning, could end up slowing down work on the bill.

The Massachusetts Democrat noted that a meeting on Capitol Hill on Thursday will be interrupted for a “photo op” at the White House with congressional Democrats and Republicans as well as Bush.

“We’re trying to rescue the economy, not the McCain campaign,” Frank said.

Katy actually did a respectable job in this clip. She’s not ‘mean’. She didnt actually ask her anything difficult. Good questions but not difficult. She was polite, respectful, gave Palin time to answer, followed up with relevant questions. Palin essentially stumbled her way through….reminded me way too much of Miss Teen American and the Eye-racky speech….rambling, disjointed, repetitive catch words; reform, maverick, You could just see her racking her brain for words to string together to fill the void!

Wow, if you think this is good, look at the Letterman Show. Mc Cain standing up Letterman for a Couric interview may become his worst case decision.
They really could make a sit-com from this campaign that could give ” Dallas” , for those of you old enough to remember, a real run for its money or “Emmy” as it may be.

Something is terribly wrong in Manchurian land…

The Dems announced at 10 pm EST they have a plan ready to roll:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080925/pl_nm/us_financial_bailout_deal_1

One thing about celebs and talk show hosts, they do NOT like to be stood up. You end up toxic pretty fast. That must have been what happened to Anne Coulter. She could say the most disgusting things on air and be fine but she did a few last-minute cancellations and now she’s off the books. It must be the worst sin in broadcasting. If you aren’t actually dead or in surgery, you’d better show up for that national program.

AnneinWA (20:13:41) :
What is sorely disturbing to me are the number of McCain/Palin signs I see posted in my Western Washington area. On my way to an appt. today I counted signs – NO Obama signs and 6 McCain. I admit, I live in a rural area so I am counting on Seattle and other metro areas to make certain this state remains BLUE, but I simply “don’t get it”. How can people vote for him…vote for MORE of the s.o.s….and possibly Palin!
I have been kicking around Washington my whole life there have always been pockets of conservitisim mostly rural and a few wealthy suburbs like Bellvue, Mercer Island. We have yet to go republican in the biggest landslide in my lifetime the election of Ronald Reagan we went for Carter we were about the only ones. Dino Rossi has sued and won the right to have the words “leans republican” instead of his true party affiliation on the ballot. There is a reason for that.

In Part II, must worse than the first: Palin says if “obsessive partisanship” gets in the way of “doing what’s right for Wall Street,” then “that is an “atrocity.” An atrocity, she tells us! Yeah, “this is crisis mode we are in,” people, Palin-style. Better hand our money over to the striking capitalists on Wall Street or, god help us, they will tip us into a depression. Also, giving all our money to Wall Street, she says, will help out with “the health care reform that is needed.” I think we have seen a bona fide demonstration of doublethink, there. Then she says, “oh, it’s got to be all about job creation.” And also, it’s about “reducing taxes and reining in spending.” WTF: whatever she’s smoking I want some too. “And, uh, we’ve got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive scary thing.” Jeez, she’s just one mindless string of talking points. Are we going to look inside her and find a tape player and loud speaker?

eh… I dunno… true Katie wouldn’t want to look like the bad guy, but I do object to everyone handling her with kid gloves…

Dear Princess:
But that’s the beauty of it – almost a tai chi approach. Katie wasn’t going to serve the death blow (and g-forbid sweat or worse be called out), katie knew palin could sink all by herself, just by asking the right questions.
that is the brilliance of the approach.

And, if the democrat strategists could pick up on that, “harmless” questions that just can’t be answered by the VP candidate AND can’t be criticized by the opposing team, palin would sink all by herself.

subtle but effective 🙂

Debbie:

I understand that the Obama Campaign has decided not to put much effort into “dreck” (or what ever they call the yard sign stuff). Certainly the offices I went to didn’t have any yard signs— just a few bumper stickers.

In my state, a large percentage of the McCain signs that were up before the Palin nomination (I’d say at least 80% in my town) suddenly disappeared.

Also, she sounds like she blames homeowners for making their own bed, by letting themselves be taken in by those “predator lenders” (you know, the ones who were bundling mortgage securities for Wall Street, that place that it would be an “atrocity” not to bail out). I guess homeowners are the de facto leaders of the U.S. and have only themselves to blame for their poor leadership of themselves! Don’t look to John McCain for leadership; he’s a “maverick.”

Senator McCain, I, for one, would like to thank you. You said you were going to bring transparency, and you have. Your stated intention of returning to DC to work on the economic legislation, suspending your campaign and delaying the debate is patently a political ploy.

You have very little economic experience, as you so freely admitted. So, naturally, you’re rushing back to the Capitol to save the day. Your day. Certainly not mine. You care not for my day, week, month or year.

You are willing to do anything to secure victory. I am too. Y’see, I care about myself, my family, my community and my country. While your tax plan is better for my wallet, it is not best for my country. I regret that there was a moment in time that I considered voting for you. Alas, I am fallible, which is different than fungible. (Ask your running mate.)

In the coming weeks, I will donate more money to the Obama campaign. I will double my efforts to call voters in swing states. All because of just how transparent you are. So, again, thanks for that.

I wrote to McCain. I filled-in Senator McCain’s form and sent him a snarky e-mail. I had to pick a “subject” to write to him about, so I chose TERRORISM. I thought that might be my best bet in getting it read…bomb, bomb, bomb!

I told him I believe there are many forms of terror – George Bush tried his terrorism tactics on us tonight. Then went on a long rant – ended with – an honorable candidate would speak to the nation, a nation that is stunned after living under a veil of secrecy for 8 years, and share his views to be judged by by voters.

I also said Barack Obama has stated he is quite willing to work all day and get on his big plane and fly to ol’ Miss and DEBATE…even suggested O. might offer him a ride (kinda’ like getting the old folks to the polls on voting day, so they can do their duty!).

Here is my take on the John and Sarah thing. Not sure about you folks but I am the same age as Obama. I could not keep up the kind of pace they keep in these campaigns. I cannot see how John McCain do it. He is looking older, more worn, more tired I think he is unraveling as well. Regardless of your opinion of our last two presidents look how much they aged in the 8 years they each spent in office, both turned grey in their first term, how can a man who doesn’t have all that many years left expect to survive the grueling effects of being president of this country.
As for Sarah she made a choice to accept the VP slot, she is a politician she should have known what she was in for. Perhaps she is arrogant, foolish who knows, maybe she just didn’t think. Katie Couric tore her to shreds because she was the only one who could ask hard questions, it had to be another woman. I’m impressed you all know it could mean the end of her carreer most of the powers that be are supporting the republicans. Don’t feel sorry for Ms. Sarah she made her choices and she must live with what ever consquences of her actions and words are. We can only hope she learns from her mistakes as she is now she is a menace to all of us. I do not imagine she will survive very long in Alaska politics either.

Really, thank you, you’re all the best (as you help me with my sash & crown and I sashay down the aisle waving my index finger that I’ve just licked – ick). I’d like to dedicate this award to my long-suffering husband who is driving across Canada, as we will soon be joining him there, relocating for the forseeable future. If the rethuglicans win we will all be applying for political asylum, as I have been the Obama Mama of Eagle River! Ticking off half of the neighborhood as I dare to knock on their door and ask if they are a registered voter… My husband is a saint, he is lucky he is not here now to hear me ranting on & on about this craziness — although I filled him in when he called to check in tonight — but he is the best and will be checking the mudflats posts for all of the news like a good husband should. Even one who was going to vote for mclame until failin was added to the ticket.

You are all a lifeline, and I am not nearly as eloquent as most, but I am so very very glad that I found this community, and I promise that I whenever I look at this award I will be reminded to carry this political fervor with me for life — to every vote on every little thing or big thing. That is what mudflats has done for me, and if the little bit that I have been inspired to do can help us carry the day on Nov 4th, then I am forever in your debt.

Banks release a “statement of condition” or something like that every quarter — with Sept. 30th coming up…. next Tuesday
Is that why there is such a rush to get this $700B (released & on the bank books to bring up their “ratio”)?

Am sure that the “foreign investors”, unlike us lowly depositors in the US, scrutinize over those statements with a fine tooth comb.
If I remember correctly, they are about as boring as a Stock prospectus. But am sure that these foreign investor groups have highly trained individuals to review every word and quadruple check every decimal.

So, lets consider this ~~ and I don’t necessarily WANT a government bail out ~~ but if those reports come out. The foreign investors will decided to yank their money from the banks or want their collateral – call the loan due and payable. Is this possible?

And, truly this Trillion $ bailout is a LOT of money- but it is a small % of the GNP…

Bush and his gang have used up any and all of whatever good will there might have been. I cannot believe anything he says and I do not believe the world will melt down in a week. But even if it did- so be it.

ENOUGH!

Hello mudpals, what a crazy day! I keep trying to catch up here and the posts just keep coming. So here are some thoughts:

On those crazy DVDs sent out, I just got that yesterday in the mail. The weird thing is that we both got them (rep/dem). I knew it was propaganda right away and tossed them aside to drop off at an Obama office. Scary though.

Letterman was on FIRE tonight. West Coast needs to turn on the TV and check him out.

Having been in sales for way too many years, SP reminded me of a new salesperson on their first big meeting. Smiling, working hard to remember the pitch, and spinning hard when you don’t know the answer. The bottomline is that we need a Vice President who is past the training wheels stage. SP is NOT ready for the Big Leagues and we don’t have time to train her.

McCain must fulfill his obligation to the American people and be at the debate Friday, period.

On what we should do…forget the diehard’s they will never waiver. Instead focus on the Indies/Disillusioned Rep/Undecideds. They are the ones that will be concerned by the never-ending saga. Witch hunting pastors, Suspension of campaigns, Troopergate, Press issues, etc are going to big red flags for these people. Every new craziness just allows for better conversation about Obama/Biden.

As always, AKM thank you…this is my oasis in the desert of ignorance!

Palin has gotten by for many years without knowing anything. She doesn’t see “knowing” things as worth her time. She also probably has trouble concentrating or as my grandma used to say “has a bad case of pay attention”. All that policy stuff is for suckers. It’s boring and who cares? For the most part it works. She can’t learn the stuff because she doesn’t see a point to it. It would be more her style to win Katy over by pretending to be her girl friend. Might work in small town … doesn’t cut it now. You can see this attitude in total by the people she has appointed to government positions. Knowledge, skills, and experience is irrelevant. People who like Palin agree with her because they don’t want to be bothered with the details either.

There is only one way to combat this. HUMOR. Once you become a laughing stock, you are toast in politics. This is especially true for Palin because she has no sense of humor. People like her never do.

First I watched this little “winner”. Katie actually wasn’t too tough on Palin, but Palin looked nervous and never really answered any questions. She just repeated “As John McCain said…”. Then I see the news that McCain wants to postpone (aka cancel) the VP debates! Priceless! Can’t EVERYONE see through this? How can anyone defend McCain/Palin at this point?

On the Mike Malloy radio show, a listener just compared this interview with “speed dating.” All I know about this is what I’ve seen on tv, but busy executives all get together, and each sits across the table from another and try to get as much information about the other in a minute or two. Sarah Palin would probably do well with speed dating, but not so good as the vice president.
Also, she met with world leaders today? God, please. They hate us already…don’t give them more reasons.

I don’t think she’s stupid at all, just amoral enough that she doesn’t care whether or not she understands any this. Sorry for her? No. She’s asking us to make her one step away from the presidency and all she’s got to show for herself is her ambition. She’s been on the offensive, attacking and mocking, since she’s been on the national stage. She chose to put herself in this position – she didn’t have to accept McCain’s offer to be his running mate. I wouldn’t say I’m delighting in her downfall exactly; but sorry for her? I just read this post on CBS under the Palin/Couric video. Posted by xraydude2000. A reality to this we really need to pause and think about. I haven’t really seen this expressed quite this way yet on Mudflats (though I could have missed it):

I was in the army in the 80”s and I would”ve been scared if she was my Commander in any form. Please people— we owe it to our troops who are fighting and dying oversees to make an intelligent vote and not vote for someone based on personality. Our vote will place that person in command of our men and women and determine where, when, and why they live or die. Do you actually believe Palin is qualified to lead our men and women into battle?! PLEASE REMEMBER OUR MEN AND WOMEN- WE MUST DO OUR PART AND CHOOSE PROPERLY.

AnneinWa: You are not allowed to think that way!!!! After a very sad day going door to door in our neighborhood I was discouraged, but the next day I made myself go out again (masochism?) and it was better. Maybe I am the only person in Alaska that thinks this state may go blue for the first time, and I am definately not someone considered optimistic by friends/family, but if I can think that up here then, short of Texas, anyone can think it anywhere! Stay positive, ignore the little pockets of tyranny in your lovely state! Maybe all of the Obama signs have been stolen so they’ve given up putting up new ones. One person at a time, one vote at a time.

What is it that Obama says? “I’m asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington… I’m asking you to believe in yours.” As I explained to more than one person that I spoke to while going door to door — whoever wins, and I sincerely hope it will be Obama, all of us who have gone the extra mile to bring about this moment in history, the first black man to be President of the US, the passion that his candidacy has inspired, the renewed commitment to the democratic process, we all come out winners.

I believe this does need to be done right – especially that EVERY congressperson & senate who votes FOR the bailout ~ is required to READ the bill and sign it – not just AYE or NAY – or 6 months (or years) down the road admit that they really didn’t read it – and went along with the crowd.

I was just thinking why the “big push” to have this done “RIGHT NOW” may be due to those statements of conditions at the end of the quarter.

24 09 2008
just a thought

Enjay aka Turbine Yukon (21:27:54) :
Banks release a “statement of condition” or something like that every quarter — with Sept. 30th coming up…. next Tuesday
Is that why there is such a rush to get this $700B (released & on the bank books to bring up their “ratio”)?

Dear Turbine:
I’m not sure I have the answer, but banks are required to “mark-to-market” which means adjusting the value of what they hold to what the market deems their value to be.

so, for a bad analogy, if you own a 1972 car, and your neighbor sells one for $500, even if your 1972 car is cherry then yours is now worth $500.

I’m not completely sure of what everybody is looking at, or what is exactly going on, but the banks want these “assets” off the books, b/c they can’t assign a neutral or positive value to them. In other words, because they are viewed as toxic (whether actually true or not) they are worth less and less.

What compounds the situation is that the banks’ assets have to amount to a certain about, compared to other things on the balance sheet, in order to meet certain standards.

sorry to sound palin-eque, but i don’t know the exact measures or ratios, to be more clear.

So, lets consider this ~~ and I don’t necessarily WANT a government bail out ~~ but if those reports come out. The foreign investors will decided to yank their money from the banks or want their collateral – call the loan due and payable? Is this possible?

as i understand it, the gov’t is proposing to buy those “toxic” assets from the banks such that they are no longer on the banks’ balance sheets.

the government will own them (you too, for that matter), and the banks’ ratios will be (hopefully) compliant to the standards they need to be in order to do “business as usual”.

what will the gov’t be left with? that depends.
if you’re an optimist – they will buy those assets at cents on the dollar and hold them and make a profit.
if you’re a pessimist – they will sell them at a loss and we all pay for it.

Mad Monk (19:52:40) :
Go back to the beginning when they’re walking. Katie asks, “Isn’t that a conflict of interest?” Count the seconds that Sarah’s silent — it’s a media eternity, and then she repeats her canned answer right down to, “I would hope that that’s the case.”

I absolutely noticed that too. That was really weird. I swear you could almost hear the click-click-click as she rewound the tape in her mind and then repeated the same answer almost verbatim. Maybe she really is a Manchurian candidate.

She also looked very tired and depressed. I’m sure she never had to work this hard before in her life and I’m sure it isn’t as fun as she thought it was going to be. Unlike her college career, mayoral duties and governor’s duties apparently people are making her study hard and it’s taking it’s toll.

However, I do see why the neocons thought she might work. She does appear to have the ability to memorize long wordy talking points and reguritate them “almost” on cue. Unfortunately she seems incapable of original thought so if she gets slightly off-track her answers just seems weird and completely non-sequitar.

for example:

Couric: But can you give me any other concrete examples? Because I know you’ve said Barack Obama is a lot of talk and no action. Can you give me any other examples in his 26 years of John McCain truly taking a stand on this?

Palin: I can give you examples of things that John McCain has done, that has shown his foresight, his pragmatism, and his leadership abilities. And that is what America needs today.

But she really couldn’t give any other example of things John McCain has done that have shown foresight, pragmatism and leadership abilities.

Also on Rachel Maddow tonight I saw the tape from her church where she is being protected from ‘witchcraft’ by the Rev. Muthee. OMG! That was really, really creepy and bizarre.

McCain diverted some serious attention from extremely damaging things today by ‘suspending’ his campaign and pulling his drama queen act.

Between his Freddie Mac sponsored campaign manager and his VP running mate’s witchcraft protection plan the least weird thing today was McCain trying to suspend his campaign and duck the debates and that in itself was so weird it suspended belief.

Palin didn’t look good. She’s looking a little frazzled and perhaps a tiny bit panicked. I think even she is aware he is completely out of her league.

She will never do a debate. Even if they just bail and say she isn’t capable it will be better than her actually doing the debate.

However, as someone wrote earlier, I don’t think we can underestimate the effort it will take to get Obama elected. The Repubs I know REALLY LIKE PALIN. Then talk about fiscal responsibility: Ole Miss has spent $5.5 million to prepare for the 1st debate & now McCain is callous enough to try and back out of it given our fiscal crisis??? Take a look at what Ole Miss thinks about that:

Right. I want to see FrontLine’s Martin Smith interview Palin. See Truth, War & Consequences:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/truth/view/

After Ahmed Chalabi told Smith that the Iraq National Congress had documents showing that Saddam provided money to al-qaeda . . .

Smith: I mean, if there is such a document, it makes sense for you to share it, no?
Chalabi: I’m not saying no. No, I’m saying that I can’t–
Smith: I’m somehow not getting the feeling that I’m going to see the document.
Chalabi: Well, you are erroneous.
Smith: OK. Great. I hope to see it.
Chalabi: Well, we expect to show it to you.

Chalabi never produced the document. Palin will never “bring ‘em to yah.”

And, I would love to see someone ask Palin what she thinks about McCain’s strong support of Chalabi. Her answer would along the lines of, “In what way, Charlie?”

Though I would love it, as my son pointed out, seeing that Palin is in the dark, again, would change no one’s mind.

I went to the Demo CC meeting tonight and they only had 10-15 small yard signs a sack of maybe 50-100 buttons, they were saving the buttons for some event next week, the signs we were told can not go up until after Oct 6th or maybe later because of Halloween vandalism. More or do in next week or so, but money is needed to buy them, as our small community only has a few $$$ to go many things. Home made signs are popping up, for those who are concerned they will not get one. I think WA has the same laws as to when signs can go up except on private property.

Okay….well I just got home today from phone banking in the Phoenix, Arizona area and it was pretty amazing. I arrived home feeling energized and wanting to get my daily dose of Mudflats. I saw this video of Sara Palin and was just about to post my thoughts on it when as I scrolled down through everyone else’s comments…I came across several threads that called her ‘bipolar’ jokingly.
At first I thought let it go because maybe it was just one person and oh well people say things. But, then I saw it several times and it began to stop being funny. Folks, I work in mental health advocacy and not to be preachy but people who truly have a diagnosis of bipolar are not ‘bipolar’. They have
bipolar. It does not define them but it is indeed a part of who they are and can be a very debilitating mental illness that more frequently than it should comes with a great deal of social stigma.
I have been on this forum since pretty near the announcement of SP and I have come to know and respect many of you as intelligent, passionate and committed individuals even though I have never met you in person. In fact, it is what drove me for the first time in my life to get off my butt and go and actually volunteer for an election at the Democratic HQ talking to actual citizens on the phone about their right to vote. What an amazing experience that was for me and it is one I will never forget. And I have you all to thank for this happening. I am forever changed. You see, I have lived in countries where to this day women do not have the right to vote never mind any of the other rights we so graciously are afforded. So to actually drive that point home today by making sure people were registered and having access to early ballots or mail-in ballots if needed was such a wonderful experience. Working side by side with veterans, senior citizens, college students, mothers, spouses of all religions, colors, socio-economic make-ups and more blew me away. People surprisingly did NOT hangup but were interested and really desiring of information and help. People do want change and by the end of the day……even I added volunteers to our ranks…….
I have learned from the past few weeks that calling someone a derogatory name is not what the people here are about even if that person is not our candidate and that issues are what matter the most to most if not all of us. I would only request that this is kept in mind even when referencing those faced with mental illness because they are also voting citizens who struggle everyday in different ways to be contributing members of this country that we all love and are fighting to preserve. Thanks for listening and for continuing to serve as an inspiration and a voice.

Oh man…I almost feel for her….She looked so uncomfortable and Couric kept on looking so intensely into her eyes….Couric did great.(I almost like her again) Sarah probably thought hat god would come and give her all of her talking points. It must have sucked when she had to rely on her own knowledge and judgment.

As a compassionate person, I do believe that everyone can be improved whether they are demons or not and for her own good, I hope that this is humbling experience for her…Don’t you feel a little like you are watching a Greek drama or a Comedy?…(Damn, which one is it? Sometime it is difficult to tell.) I guess it is a tragedy for her if she has some insight and deals with her psychosis and it is comedy if she gets away with it and has some good drunken sex.

Then she is told she is the savior of the planet and the bringer of miracle to the base, with more adoring crowds singing her praise, along with all those great reviews from all the pundants that tell her and her adoring crowds what she is and how she the answer to Hillary to Right Religious base masses that need to be told what they think when they think. Sometime inbetween here trips and stump speeches she has to get a new warerobe, keep her hair fixed, nurse the baby, send her kid off to another country, find a man for her daugher to marry, Figure out were she put her yahoo account her blackberry, and her troopergate files, who is her new lawyer, speech writer, who is the right press to smile and wave too and who she is not allowed to speak to, which bus, plane, or limo she is suppose to get in and with whom. Oh, and all those mean reporters keep trying to get to her with those nasty microphones. And if that isn’t enough now they have her taking lessons on the economy, forniegn affairs, international leaders, and where did you say she is going to talk to Katie? I mean they thought she could walk and talk in New York like she did while she was interview, like twice in AK. Once while she was 7 months PG, but no one knew.

Oh, I feel so sorry for her…she must be just about ready to scream…”stop cancel the debate” I just can’t do this until after I’m elected.

hey you guys, i’ve been scrolling through comments pretty quickly this evening, and see a few people beat me to posting the letterman slapdown (yeehaw!) but i haven’t seen a post of the video that totally made my day today (well, it’s from yesterday), of campbell brown’s call to “free sarah palin!”–from the clutches of mccain campaign sexism. it was probably on one of the earlier threads i haven’t caught up on yet, but if like me you’re having a hard time keeping up with all of them, thought i’d post it anew here.

campbell brown: free sarah palin!

today felt like one of the most surreal news days since P-day for nonstop insanity of news (though the Alaskans probably have many days that could claim the honor, since they’re on the frontlines of troopergate)–and that’s saying a lot, given what we’ve been through so far.

phew… back to it. a bientot!

I just watch McCain with Katie Couric.
It is astonishing that he is still saying if only Obama would have agreed to Town Hall meetings the issue of canceling the upcoming debate would be meaningless.

http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4476356n

Is he saying if Obama run his campaign according to McCains plan all would be well?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shockingly, that’s precisely what he’s saying. When at a loss for words, McCain pulss the townhall meetings out of his a$$. What he fails to mention is that he wanted invitation only. Obama wanted first come – first served. Begs the question, who’s the elitist?
If McCain was going to attempt to fill the audience with friends of the friendless (bonus if you rememer which long ago sit-com featured the fictional group), why would Obama agree?
AnneinWa, I can’t imagine how difficult it is to be surrounded by Republicans. I’m in New York City and finding life pretty tough. Yes, we’re a blue city in a blue state, but I have friends who are Republicans and it seems we can’t have any civil political discourse.
Today was so moving for me because I got to help people on the phone who wanted to vote but were shut-ins and we actually had people who could take information to their houses and help them sign up for a ballot by mail etc
I got to meet some of the local candidates who came down just to casually say hello and thanks for all our work. People even know about this blog….:)! I also made a donation and got some Obama/Biden buttons and stickers to hand out and a t-shirt for the Democratic party that on the back says….
After a morning show and entertainment television, Ms. Couric is TRYING to be a serious journalist. She has worked hard to get where she is today. I give her a great deal of credit for her efforts, she looks and sounds as professional as she should be for a person in her job.
Ms. Couric asked important questions that demanded serious answers. The non-answers she received in return were about as brilliant as an electric night light in a blackout. I am very proud of her for not leaning over and just slapping Gov. Palin silly for some of the answers she gave. The look said volumes about the desire to do so!
Hi All – thank you so much AKM- this site is great – I have to read everything before i go to bed – I haven’t gotten too much sleep lately.
This woman Palin really scares me – geez, that interview was too much- i don’t understand how the Repubs can like her so much – but then again Bush was voted in to office 2 times –
I have a friend in NV who keeps sending me things about Obama – not good things and and told her to stop because she is obviously going to vote for mccain/palin and I was going for obama/biden – but she doesn’t stop and she “absolutely loves that woman” Ugggggghhhhhhhh What can I do.
…and the Couric interview: Another strong, smart woman. Again, no way SP can stand up to or buffalo these woman, and she knows it! ABC News has an interesting page on executive pay at the major companies in the current crisis. It looks like they could easily afford to kick a lot in to help redeem things, in fact if all the Wall Street Traders were required to return the bonuses from the past few years it would go a long way toward resolving the problem – I wonder why that question isn’t coming up? Could it be that celebrity journalists might be worried about their own inflated pay checks?
Every day just keeps getting better!…and today (my friends) we got a flippin two-fer! Actually a three-fer, by some accounts:
1) What can I say? I was left speechless by SP’s performance…I’ve heard a lot of folks say they almost felt sorry for her…not me…Katie! That’s who I felt sorry for! As hard as KC tried (and I think she did) to control her facial expressions, one frame is worth a million words! “Quick study, eh?” This is how much she’s learned in a month of constant coaching? Puh-lease! “Again…my…understanding…” –VERBATIM!
2) McCain dissed Letterman! Priceless! I remember back in the 2000 election when Leno did one of his Jaywalking segments. He showed pictures of Bush, Gore, and a celebrity to all these people on the street. 100% knew the celebrity, and only like 5% knew the candidates. One guy “identified” Dub as “I dunno…some really constipated old dude???” It’s an unfortunate statement about our country (but works for us today) that a GROSS %age of people in the US get all their “political news” off shows like Letterman and Leno.
3) But my favorite? Obama’s um-we’re-running-for-the-Presidency-here-John-COMMENT that “You know, John, occasionally the President may have to do more than one thing at a time.” (paraphrased) Would love to see Barack get 3.5 hours of primetime to answer all the questions if JM no-shows!
As much as I’d love to see it, that will never happen. Look at Bush. He’s the most disliked President ever. Does he care? Nope. He’s happy as a clam, he’s going to retire soon in relative luxury. He thinks people just don’t understand him, that’s all. Sarah is exactly the same way. She probably thinks she told Katie Couric a thing or two today. She probably believes herself to be mighty clever because she’s a Governor and these media people are nobodies.
Other than a bell on Senator Biden’s podium that he rings each time Palin lies, here’s a debate exchange I’d like to witness:
Biden: Governor, have you read Obama’s detailed economic or foreign policy plans?
Biden: Well, I’m sure if you had a plan, he’d read yours.
DeMo-why do you have friends who are Republicans? Friends don’t let friends vote Republican! (Just kidding…my husband is a Republican, but voting for Obama. He has been shaking his head for a few months, now he is outright angry…he is a fiscal conservative/social liberal)
I definitely understand being blue in a red state…I live in Kansas. People seem to believe that the Republican party is something it isn’t, and hasn’t been for 40 years. I wanted to go shake the woman in the booth next to us at Panera the other day, yammering on about how evil Obama is and what a breath of fresh air Palin is. Huh? Fresh Air? I never thought I would say this, but she is even worse than George Bush. She is very similar to him in her arrogance and lack of insight, but she is even more radical in her world view. She really, REALLY scares me.
To the Alaskans-how did she get a 90% approval rating? I apologize in advance for my ignorance, but “what exactly does the Governor do, every day?”
And to the poster about Brad Hanson…it’s going to be in probably next week. The NE has been crossing their Ts and dotting their Is on this one. They do not want to lose the credibility they gained with the Edwards piece. I don’t know a whole lot more than anyone else, just worked with one of the writers on a piece awhile ago, so I get some trickle down information. (I am a free lance researcher and have done work on smaller pieces for them. I wanted on Palin SO BADLY, but…they have the pros on it)
— No — It’s not just you – the commentator on PBS tonight said she thought it was disappointing that Bush & McCain appeared to have hatched this plan, and were playing politics at such a critical time.
The plan:
McCain would say he needed to suspend his campaign to deal with the financial crisis. (But why do they suddenly need him?) Since they don’t REALLY need him, Bush would make it LOOK like they did, by insisting that McCain & Obama attend a meeting Thursday am. Since Obama wasn’t suspending his campaign or the debate, this would make it look like Obama didn’t care
Definitely looks like Rove’s hand in this scheme…
Interesting that they were commenting on it on PBS.
The Guardian has video of the actual exorcism performed on Palin by Muthee at her church:
“…Sarah Palin receiving special protection from witches in a laying-on-of-hands ceremony at the Wasilla Assembly of God, apparently during her gubernatorial campaign in 2005. The hands in question belong to Pastor Thomas Muthee, who incidentally made another appearance at the church this past weekend. The ceremony — including a prayer that Palin be protected from “every form of witchcraft” — begins after Palin steps up to the podium at around 7m10s. Before that, starting at 4m58s, Muthee explains how it’s all part of a grand plan to reinsert God — or rather, his particular version of God — back into American public life:
We need God taking over our education system… If we have that in our schools, we will not have kids being taught how to worship Buddha, how to worship Mohammed. We will not have, in their curriculum, witchcraft, and sorcery. Is anybody hearing me? The other area is in the area of media. We need believers in the media. We need God taking over the media in our lands… And the last area is in the area of government. Hello? We need believers there. We need men and women of integrity. You know, as the secretaries of state. We need them right there. People that are born again, spirit-filled; people who know God, and who are serious with God.”
I really was not enthusiastic about her joining up, but she at least has a long term plan…she plans to finish her bachelors during her first stint and then try to finagle the Army to pay for her medical school to keep her in. Then she can retire very young and “do what she wants to do” with her career, which means (to her) working full time for “Doctors Without Borders”. She has always been bull headed, so there was no talking her out of it. She’s smart enough to pull it off, but I don’t want her in the sandbox.
My sister-in-law’s brother has been in Iraq pretty continuously. He is home for a few months and then back again. It is very hard on his family, but he only has a few years left until he can retire. This damn war.
Anne-Do you think McCain is really trying to pull the VP debate? I bet he shows up on Friday and he may do well. Never underestimate the Republicans. I made that mistake in 2004 and didn’t think there was any way W could win.
Who knew that a war we fought 40 years ago would prove more important than a war currently killing our kids? And who knew “Swiftboating” would become a word?
Steph,
Regarding the debates, I don’t know what to think. My first instinct is that he wants it to look like he is putting “Country First” by heading back to DC. However, I believe he tried to “swiftboat” Obama today. I listened to Barack’s explanation of today’s events, and I believed him when he said he called McCain and asked if they could work out a bipartisan statement on the economy, since it seemed they were in agreement on so many issues. Obama even said that McCain mentioned some concern about continuing with the debates, but Obama was left believing that would be a discussion the two of them would have, AFTER their statement was issued. Then McCain simply went on TV and declared he was suspending his campaign and not attending the debate. If he doesn’t show, I hope Obama does. However, I don’t think that’s a risk JohnnyMc can take. The public outcry to hear from these candidates has already begun. Can McCain allow Obama all that free air time? even if it would please me so? I don’t think so. However, it’s hard to predict what John McCain will do.
Steph,
Your daughter sounds like a wonderful person with admirable goals. My son is also a very determined person. I tried to talk him out of joining the Army – and that was during peace time. I still harbored too many horrible memories from Viet Nam to trust that we would not have unjust, unnecessary wars.
However, my son has been in the sandbox in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as hot spots where our official presence was not advertised for almost 20 years. It sounds like your daughter will do her time, get an education, and get out. Don’t get me wrong – I couldn’t be more proud of my son. However, for the past 5+ years, his wife has had no husband and his kids have grown up without a dad. The horrors of this war have been kept under wraps as much as possible, and the burden has been carried by few,
Now, I am off to bed. It was great talking with you. Maybe we can meet here Friday night DURING THE DEBATE!
The fact is that 67% of Fox viewers still belive that Saddam Hussein was associated with Al-Qaida even though this claim has been thourouly debunked. Now you could say that this isn’t surprising seeing as these are Fox viewers. But the same study also shows that 16% of PBS/NPR viewers 56% of CBS viewers and a staggering 40% of people who get their news from print sources ALSO hold that view. Wow. There are little children in America who would have put on a smarter show than that. Children who will probably loss their healthcare if McCain is elected. To the people who say they kind of feel sorry for her or people who have said they maybe feel a little bad for Mccain cause he’s, you know, an old person. Don’t. Not Ever. These kinds of people have been covering up lies forever. They’ve been allowed to get away with it. Any single time someone did not agree with a Bush lie they were deemed unpatriotic by the Bush Administration or called a member of the liberal media which we all know is “evil” and full of “liars”. The 2nd amendment may be the Rebupicans favorite but the one I care about most is the freedom to hear what my leaders and future leaders are saying. Bush and his friends have made the mainstream media live in a state of fear for a very long time. The good news is the internet is changing that in a HUGE way and it’s awesome. Sites like this….awesome!! If the McBush group can’t handle Americans hearing about what they think or are DOING then that it is their own bed to LIE in.
The only people I feel sorry for in this all of this are 3. good republicans and christians who actually believed in their party and were used as pawns in a pretty sick game and are only now just finding it out 2. The rest of the world 1. all of us Americans who never voted for the Bush/ Dr.Evil ticket in the first place. We’ve been waiting for a long, long time for this meltdown but I don’t think anyone, anywhere, could have ever guessed it could get this stupid.
The only saving grace in all of this is that so many people are being brought together to talk about things we should never have stopped talking about as a society. Who said being a community organizer wasn’t an actual responsibility?
Let’s all work really hard this time!
CHANGE 08!!
Palin almost seems indignant that we, the public, just refuse to take McCain’s word for it that she’s the most qualified candidate out there and expect her to prove it on her own.
This interview is an embarrassment.
Palin seems lost about what role to play: Cheerleader rooting for the losing team, TV Sportscaster clueless about the game or Beauty Queen runner up awestruck during the non swimsuit portion of the pagent.
Worse, she seems to think that her vague, uninformed, memorized sales pitch for McCain really IS all that is expected of her.
Thanks you for your insightful comments re: mental health issues. Personally, I don’t see bipolar. I definitely see a ginormous ego and a narcissist. I don’t feel sorry for Palin. SHE doesn’t think she’s in over her head. Her head can rise above anything and everything, at least in her own mind.
But you’re so right about freely assigning medical diagnoses, especially those involving mental health. And worse, making fun of those illnesses, which are very real and very painful for the person, their family and friends.
You’re also right about how to speak to those “across the aisle.” At the beginning of this campaign, I decided that I could disagree with someone without being disagreeable. Hmmm, who said that? Obama! If only my Republican friends could do the same. But it is their loss. I’m much less angry, they are irate.
For all the accurate parallels drawn between Palin and Dubya, let’s not forget that Dubya was elected. It’s fun and easy to make fun of their, for lack of a better word, stupidity. But the people I’ve spoken with while making calls to swing states really want information. I’m sure most do their fair amount of joking about candidates but, as it’s been said, knowledge is power. People want to know about the candidates.
I don’t know what’s working for those of you who are speaking with voters, but I don’t denigrate McCain. I lay out Obama’s plans and contrast them with McCain’s. If only McCain himself could do the same.
Someone noted that Palin may be suspending her campaign. What campaign? It seems to me that she stirs up the audience before introducing McCain. And, by definition, that makes her a cheerleader at a pep rally.
Some pundit said that Obama Biden should be traveling together. NO! With two excellent candidates, they can separately address audiences. No need to follow McCain’s game plan. It’s based on having a less than stellar team.
Thanks for your tireless pursuit of truth on the Palin catastrophe. If it weren’t so completely terrifying, it might actually be funny, but we here in Canada have been suffering under a neo-Con narcissist nazi leader of a minority government for a couple of years, so we know the unthinkable can really happen.
I only wish someone like a Bill O’Reily would pin Palin to the mat – I love Katie Couric, but she didn’t go in for the kill, nor did Charlie Gibson. Maybe it’s because Palin is so pathetic it would be like beating a puppy, but those Americans living in their folksy, fundamentalist bubbles need to be shown – in a full color drubbing by someone they can’t dismiss as a liberal activist – just how fully out of her depth Palin is.
From Gail Collins’ column in today’s NY Times:
““Following Sept. 11, our national leaders came together at a time of crisis. We must show that kind of patriotism now,” he (McCain) said.
In deference to the current emergency, we will refrain from pointing out that when our national leaders came together following Sept. 11, the results were, all and all, worse than if they had stayed home.”
I’m calm now, Cynthia.
I posted my comment after reading the first two dozen posts. I got a chance to read many more later. I noted comments like: “I don’t think I will ever sit on the sidelines passively again……..the price we all would pay if we ever lost our precious freedoms is far too high.” from phnxrising (22:49:44) as well as many others and realized that i’d been a little hasty.
My apologies to everyone.
I’m not American. I can’t vote and I can’t donate, but If I were in America, I’d gladly pound the pavements with any of you. Your election matters because what America does has consequences around the world. For this reason, and whether you like it or not, American voters have a greater responsibility than voters elsewhere—a responsibility to make an informed decision and vote wisely.
I’m sending emails and fact files to every American I know. I’m visiting blogs and disseminating facts. I’m contacting Americans I know who live outside the country and who have disengaged from the American process and am encouraging them to register and vote. Democrats Abroad have a chapter where I live and I’ve emailed them offering my services. I’m waiting to hear from them.
Mostly, I’m just all fired up and armed to the teeth with nowhere to shoot. Hence my earlier outburst.
Hey, but it’s all good; I’m calm now. But may I humbly implore: less Palintology, more pavement-pounding?
It is okay….you are feeling passionate and kicking Americans in the rear so they do not hesitate even for a second is not a bad thing….it will keep us sharp even if we do get irritated for a second. Consider the following I posted in the forum that corresponds to this very topic regarding the significance that one vote makes…….
Just One Vote
The most often heard excuse for not voting in an election is “my one little vote won’t make a difference”!
Consider this:
One of the greatest political trials in America’s history ended in May 1868 when an impeachment vote in the US Senate against President Andrew Johnson failed by “just one vote”
The Alaska Purchase was ratified in 1867 by “just one vote”
paving the way for the eventual annexation of America’s largest state.
By a margin of “just one vote” Texas, California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho became states.
In the U.S. presidential election of 1800, Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr tied the electoral college vote throwing the election into the House of Representatives. After 36 separate ballots, Jefferson finally won by “just one vote”
England’s King Charles I, literally lost his head when a vote to behead him was 67 against and 68 for. The axe fell because of “just one vote”
One November 8, 1923 members of a recently formed political party met at a beer hall in Munich, Germany to elect a leader. By a majority of “just one vote”, they chose an ex-soldier named Adolf Hitler.
You just wanna smack her. I think there were maybe 30 seconds of the entire interview in which she was telling the truth.
“She must have been with her for hours & hours trying to get something that was acceptable for airing — and that was IT!”
SMR – I hear you…I was watching and thinking.
“This is the best CBS could come up with?” I feel for their editors. Never seen Palin look less composed. Ooooooo schadenfreude. Now in delicious new moose flavor.
————————————–
OK. I’m going to bed. I have to start functioning better in daily life to keep getting a pay check to now be forced to bail out the Lords of Wall Street at gun point. I have been staying up way too late now for these three continuous weeks of psychological hell since P-Day.
But before I go to bed, I want to give out today’s Maximum Overdrive Dixie Boy Truck Stop Award (wasn’t Ellen McElduff just great as Wanda June!) to KittenStCyr AND SMR here for feminine sarcasm at it’s best. The MO Award goes to the female of the sexes while I’m reading posts who exhibits in outright emotion or delicious sarcasm Thomas Jefferson’s concept that the government works for us and not the other way around. In these strange days, we all need to keep being reminded of this.
And now for the catharsis of the MO Award for this evening:
Goodnight all you dear Mudflatters across the world!
———————————————–
SMR (21:18:25) :
@HamletsMill
Re: My Award.
Really, thank you, you’re all the best (as you help me with my sash & crown and I sashay down the aisle waving my index finger that I’ve just licked – ick). I’d like to dedicate this award to my long-suffering husband who is driving across Canada, as we will soon be joining him there, relocating for the forseeable future. If the rethuglicans win we will all be applying for political asylum, as I have been the Obama Mama of Eagle River! Ticking off half of the neighborhood as I dare to knock on their door and ask if they are a registered voter… My husband is a saint, he is lucky he is not here now to hear me ranting on & on about this craziness — although I filled him in when he called to check in tonight — but he is the best and will be checking the mudflats posts for all of the news like a good husband should. Even one who was going to vote for mclame until failin was added to the ticket.
You are all a lifeline, and I am not nearly as eloquent as most, but I am so very very glad that I found this community, and I promise that I whenever I look at this award I will be reminded to carry this political fervor with me for life — to every vote on every little thing or big thing. That is what mudflats has done for me, and if the little bit that I have been inspired to do can help us carry the day on Nov 4th, then I am forever in your debt.
This is the part where I cry, right?
—————————————–
SMR,
Truly your acceptance speech was noble and gracious, especially since you and KittenStCyr were not even aware that the MO (Maximum Overdrive Dixie Boy Truck Stop Award) was being given out by me last night. And asking about if crying was appropriate was truly touching!
The award comes with an imaginary crown just like this one which you can wear anytime you like!
And it also comes with an imaginary sash just like this one which you can also wear anytime you like too
I am glad you walked the imaginary runway late last night with your index finger up instead of your middle finger! But with this award please know that you are FULLY AUTHORIZED to use your middle finger also as you walk the imaginary runway at any time on behalf of all NON-RETHUG women everywhere on Earth as a statement of feminist solidarity. As a Mudflatian you are also fully authorized to wear those yellow rubber boots too with this prestigious award.
I think your husband will be very proud of you when he returns and learns that you have received this honor here one night on Mudflats!
Ellen McElduff was so damn good as Wanda June! I just have to see it again even though I am on lunch break at work and using up company band width. But we are the IT Department and we run the show so I am exempt from all company monitoring. We turn all that off on ourselves as we have the keys to everything.
Yes. Ellen McElduff as Wanda June just takes my breath away in this scene of protest against the oppression by the things that we have made. Like our own government.
Watch the most recent Couric clip on Palin’s foreign policy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nokTjEdaUGg&feature=user
After the Gibson interview, you would think she would have done a little homework on specific advantages she might have on foreign policy experience in relation to Russia and Canada. Goodness sakes–something. Let’s give her a little two-word clue: Arctic + Energy.
Still, all she has to say for herself is that Alaska sends out pilots on missions to keep an eye out for Putin’s Rearing Head–fear. Proximity alone does not equal awareness of policies and existing frameworks for diplomacy, but she keeps reverting to proximity.
OK, one more clue. Two of our state universities are members of the University of the Arctic, with already established parliamentary structures that might facilitate deliberation on arctic energy issues. It’s something.
I could fake the answer in such an interview, even without doing homework, but I certainly want someone who is smarter than I am, please. I am begging America.
I love this comment post from someone on HuffPo: “If Sarah Palin is annointed by God, as that pastor stated. Why did he make her so stupid?” It’s so sad and funny at the same time. I can’t believe she hasn’t come up with some snappy answer to the Russia question in the past few weeks. God, PLEASE let Biden debate her. Let my neighbor’s ten year old debate her.
Somewhere else they’re calling her Snowjob Squarespecs…that nearly made me choke on my water!
Richard Gere – CHICAGO
Gotta give credit where credit is due. Richard Gere may have SUNG this in the recent film version of “Chicago”, but the biting lyrics to this and the rest of the songs in the musical were penned by the late Fred Ebb. He and composer John Kander also wrote “Cabaret”. And, one would think, any other musical whose title contains seven letters and starts with a “C”. Except they did not write “Camelot”. So much for my theory.
But yes, this is the quintessince of the “dog and pony show” we are witnessing. Ah, satire. Gotta love it.
It appears that all the lagging press coverage and lack of vetting by the republican party of Sarah Palin that it forced the American public to vet her.
Thank God for this blog as it seems we are always ahead of the news these days. This has made us strong , informed , and ready to vote for the absolute best candidate . When this election process began my wish list for a President was one who was strong, smart, calm and patient. Someone who was above average in intelligence who can inspire and guide us through the many challenges that we face. We have him and with good concience we can vote for Obama. The average Joe has power and is truly part of the political process.
Ohhh, owie. There is not enough brain bleach in the world after that interview. Truly cringeworthy.
How sad is it that the convoluted reasoning behind canceling tomorrow night’s debate is not actually fixing the economy, but in fact, saving Sarah Palin from Joe Biden? Senator McCain had no business choosing a running mate in which he has zero confidence.
The sad thing is many Americans can see this and still think Palin is qualified, just like they thought Bush was. These are people trained to think if the speaker claims to be “born again” then whatever they say cannot be questioned, they are above reproach. She can be a meth addict carrying on like Ted Haggard but she’s “forgiven”, and that’s all the cred she needs with those folks.
Palin says she believes she’ll see the end of the world in her lifetime, she and her family of narrow-minded believers will be raptured while the rest of us are “left behind”, and 46% of Americans are OK with having her next to the red button?? HELLO!!!!!???
I don’t feel sorry for her, but I do feel sorry for us. Americans deserve a candidate with at least a basic knowledge of the issues from which to build. It doesn’t seem like she even has those (outside of some energy policy stuff). Really, I can’t even believe that I’m being subjected to her because there’s really nothing there to take seriously. At all.
I would at least like to *entertain* the notion that the opposition may have a valid point. She can’t even make one. Americans deserve better choices in their candidates. Shame on McCain and the Republicans for doing this to America.
My favorite line…”I’ll try to find some and I’ll bring ’em to ya”. and “He’s known as the Maverick”. Unfortunately, not when it comes to helping out corrupt corporations. Maybe she needs to get back to that meeting with Charles Keating to find out how the economy works for the elite.
Ms. PALIN…
Sarah Palin is a sick reminder of what lengths some in this country will go to. John McCain’s utter lack of regard for his country exhibited by his choosing this moron is evident every time she opens her babbling mouth. “Take the fight to Iraq…so they’ll never do what they did on 9/11”. IRAQ HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11…Miss Caribou!!!
Meanwhile, the U.S and Pakistan are exchanging gunfire today. Will the Bush doctrine bite us in the ass one last time before he heads into the history books?
This is one regular American who does not appreciate the likes of Palin. She knows deep down in her heart that she is lying to Americans that she has the “readiness to be VP.” Folks, after the Couric & Gibson interviews, we all know that this VP pick is a hoax on America. Sarah is herself a national security issue. McCain did not put Country First when he selected this nincompoop.
Go Mudflats! Thanks for the hard work. Glad to see Katie asked harder questions than I expected. I don’t feel sorry for Palin at all. As someone who has been voraciously devouring every piece of information I can find on McCain and this ridiculous woman, I am gleeful she is crashing and burning. She and McBush are getting exactly what they deserve!!! I think it is apparent she is a viciously amibitions wackjob who will do anything to further her political career. McBush, same thing. Both of them are going down in flames I predict. Check out Rep. Barney Frank’s awesome speech tonight on the House Repugnants and McCain f*&^ing up the deal they are trying to do bi-partisanly (for once) for the credit crises issue. McCain’s strategy to fly to Washington to be a hero has backfired. This has been spellbinding, like watching a massive trainwreck — I can’t look away.
We at least know that the First Dudette will soon learn that her duties as Vice President will include English and Elocution. What poise and perspicacity! What softballs from Couric! It was as if they were getting together for a giggly little Barbie tea party and no matter what the First Dudette said, the Couric doll just bobbled her head and blinked her all too understanding eyes. This sort of insipid interview is what happens when you pay ‘reporters’ too much to work for the entertainment arm of an international conglomerate. The only high point is that Putin and some poor schmuck in the Kremlin who is trying to profile Palin for him will not only be trying to figure out what the First Dudette said, but what she could have possibly meant if those words could have possibly come from a sentient person’s brain. No offense intended, but can’t you recall or impeach this person before she drives the rest of us crazy? This much stupidity is bound to be an impeachable offense under your state Constitution. You guys allow people to shoot not so dangerous animals from airplanes, so maybe you can at least figure out a way to put the hook to this clown’s neck and pull her off the political stage. She stopped being entertaining after about two days of the White Trash drama. My heart goes out to all of you folks who didn’t vote for the First Dudette. I know that Alaska is beautiful, with nice people. My husband was stationed there in the Air Force, right before he shipped out to Viet Nam. He really liked it there.
Just one thing that I don’t understand.
How is it that after Palin’s horrible record of being mayor of Wassilla, how did she get elected as Govenor?
It boggles the mind!
Or, is Alaskan politics like Florida, Ohio, New Mexico, etc, with rigged voting machines and corrupt Registars?
Basically Palin rode in on a mandate of ‘reform’ to sweep out our then incumbent, corrupt and idiotic Governor Frank Murkowski. People were just excited to vote for a Republican that wans’t Murkowski. And you’ve witnessed yourself the ‘phenomenon’. Alaskans fell for it too, without knowing much about her really. AKM
