Bed Time in Alaska – Open Thread

24 09 2008

Stepping back from politics for a moment (is that even possible?), I thought I’d post a nice moose picture.  Why not?  Snoskred, our wonderful Forum creator, has come to really like moose, and since as far as I know, they don’t have moose in Australia, I thought I’d post one.  I took this picture from my driveway while in my car on the way to work the other day.  He was very busily attacking a shrub with his antlers, shaking back and forth, trying to scrape off all the itchy velvet covering they develop in the spring and summer, to reveal the nice shiny antlers underneath. This apparently intimidates the guys and impresses the ladies, now that fall is here, and moose start the process of making baby moose.  I caught him, however,  at the embarrasing moment when it looked like he was wearing a crazy green headdress.

This morning, having breakfast, my spouse said to me, “I haven’t seen a moose in a while.”  And I said, “Actually I saw one the other day crossing the road and going up into that yard with the steep hill.  You know the one…”  I was about to say, the one with the dark hair and the nice antlers.

“You mean, Brian?”  Spouse thought I was going to describe whose yard it was.

Whereupon my brain froze for a moment….Did he really just call this moose “Brian“?  Then, of course, I realized it was neighbor Brian, and I laughed so hard I almost choked on my canteloupe.

So, of course now, this moose has become….Brian.

But back to politics….(you knew that was coming)  I got a message from someone who has my dream job.  Mudflatter Matt is live blogging from the Ted Stevens trial in D.C.!  No much happened today, but as the trial gets into full swing, it will become a must-read.  The link is HERE, and I’ve added it to the sidebar.

The Guardian has video of the actual exorcism performed on Palin by Muthee at her church:

“…Sarah Palin receiving special protection from witches in a laying-on-of-hands ceremony at the Wasilla Assembly of God, apparently during her gubernatorial campaign in 2005. The hands in question belong to Pastor Thomas Muthee, who incidentally made another appearance at the church this past weekend. The ceremony — including a prayer that Palin be protected from “every form of witchcraft” — begins after Palin steps up to the podium at around 7m10s. Before that, starting at 4m58s, Muthee explains how it’s all part of a grand plan to reinsert God — or rather, his particular version of God — back into American public life:

‘We need God taking over our education system… If we have that in our schools, we will not have kids being taught how to worship Buddha, how to worship Mohammed. We will not have, in their curriculum, witchcraft, and sorcery. Is anybody hearing me? The other area is in the area of media. We need believers in the media. We need God taking over the media in our lands… And the last area is in the area of government. Hello? We need believers there. We need men and women of integrity. You know, as the secretaries of state. We need them right there. People that are born again, spirit-filled; people who know God, and who are serious with God.”

John McCain should be Ashamed of himself.

Trying to make this about him??

Hes had 10 days todo something about this crisis and now that hes getting pounded in the polls he decides to pull this stunt?

Give me a Break.

This has to be on of the most Selfish things ever done during an election.

Anyhow in todays world people can talk face to face anywhere and everywhere across the globe.

And why did it take our current president 10 days to say something?

This whole thing smells of one upmanship and like a Pile of rotten eggs.

Barrack played the cards right, McCain bet the farm.

Two words here.

GAME OVER!!! Cya in The White House in January Barrack.

Oh And dont give me this crap about how McCain this or that.

I lived in AZ for 16 years and McCain has done NOTHING for that state NOTHING.

Not just like, love😉

I blame the Anchorage Daily News, they have a moose gallery and I was looking through it and there was this gorgeous shot of a moose looking through someones window. And it had the most amazing expression, I can’t describe it, but that was the moment I fell in love with Moose.

I am not sure what the Moose’s name was, though.🙂

I honestly do not know how Sarah could shoot them. I can understand people who need to do it for food, that is fair enough (even though I still hate the idea) but people doing it for fun? Then posing for photos with the dead or still dying creature? I find the idea horrible..

Do you guys remember when there was that sniper shooting random people at petrol stations? I don’t think anyone thought that was fun at all. Yet it is essentially what hunters do, only they do it to animals.😦

25 09 2008
Snoskred

Oh, and this sentence?

“moose start the process of making baby moose.”

CLASSIC!🙂

Maybe if someone reminds Sarah that moose start out the same way Humans do, then she might care a little more about them being Pro-Life as she is..

I still don’t understand how someone can be pro-life and a hunter.. *head explosion* It simply is not logical..

What struck me as I signed off here last night is how the tone of this blog has changed over the last few weeks. Not surprising, but still. It’s moved from a group of people who wanted to know more about Palin, where the overall tone was enquiring, humorous, intelligent and polite – oh, and determined (patience and steel), to a blog where all these remain BUT there is now an underlying feeling of desperation and disbelief, especially after yesterday.

I went to bed after reading Naomi Klein’s piece – sorry, can’t find the link – and feeling extremely worried. And powerless. I do, unfortunately, believe that a small group in the Republican party will cheat their way to trying to remain in power… perhaps I’m a pessimist suffering from sleep deprivation.

Oh, sorry. Depressed in Sweden (a happy Socialist and proud to be one… I really don’t quite get why that’s a “bad thing”. Is it too closely linked to the idea of Communism? I think that’s a “bad thing”).

I posted this earlier (here and on the forum – be warned), when we were all frantically typing at warp speed about the canceled debate, but I’m posting it again because my experience today is truly proof that I must find a 12 step program to fix my Mudflats habit!

***TOTALLY OFF TOPIC!***

Today, I took the day off (from MUDFLATS) for a physical therapy visit. I have only been to my therapist’s office once before, and that was last week. On my way there, I was “sign counting” and cringing because I did NOT see ONE SINGLE OBAMA SIGN! I counted 6 McCain/Palin signs – one was a 4′ x 8′ BANNER! (I wonder if they have a webcam set-up to watch it? If not…??? JUST KIDDING!). I was also listening to Ed Schultz and guests talking about Palin/economy/Rick Davis pmts, tec, thinking about what I was missing on Mudflats, and my hair was on fire as it has been most recent days.

When I arrived at the building where my PT is, I parked, went in, walked upstairs, entered the office, gave the receptionist my name, sat down and started watching CNN on their big screen – was immediately, totally enthralled in the developing news – McCain’s not gonna what???.

After a few minutes, I was asked by the staff to spell my last name…then my first name. I noticed another person was called-in to help search for me in the data base…sheesh! I thought these folks must not be very well organized – lost my file since last Thursday!

The receptionist finally told me I not only wasn’t on their schedule, but they had absolutely NO record of me having ever been there. MUST BE JOHN McCAIN’s doing, I thought! Of course I am NOT paranoid!

“I was here, for the first time, last Thursday,” I finally said. When the bewildered woman finally asked, “Are you here to see the dentist or for a cleaning?” Even then it took a few minutes for it to register that I hadn’t noticed one single thing except the “talking heads” spewing the news-fix my addiction requires! So, there I stood, speechless, like a moose caught in headlights!

OMG! After taking a few deep breaths, I came out of my gobsmacked fog and took a good look around. The dentist’s office I was in held NO resemblance to the PT’s where one can see folks exercising, big equipment…and THERE IS NO TELEVISION.

Head down, I told her I was there for physical therapy. “Their office is across the hall,” she said with a sympathetic smile. I left quickly, because I was afraid she was going to offer to take me by the arm and guide me there…

Of course, I couldn’t resist telling my physical therapist what had happened – then she told everyone else in the office, and THEY all had a good laugh…hahaha! I am literally turning into a lunatic over this election!

I told you this was off topic, but fellow Mudflatters, I live in Western Washington! I know Obama’s climbing back up in the polls here, but I am concerned.

Now I am going to write to Keith O. and Rachel and thank them for ranting for me every night! I am also going to write to the media outlets and ask them to call McCain OUT! As Obama said, ‘We can go to Washington, but we both have big planes that get us to Mississippi quickly!’ GOBAMA!

Thanks, in advance, fellow Mudpuppies, for allowing me to vent!

No worries, Brit! You can be reassured that Mudflatters will come to each other’s the rescue when the chips get down. I’ve hit plenty of black moods myself in the last few weeks. Brit,

Now we DO know more about Palin! And as of today, we know more about John McCain’s new M.O. However, we also had a blast watching David Letterman together. I think we Democrats are sensitive folks and sometimes get a bit worried at the thoughts of our economy crashing and our sons and daughters dying for unjust wars and our Constitution being ripped to shreds…so we take time and waddle around in circles in the muck and mire, trying to figure out our opponent’s motives.

However, this time I believe we are doing a pretty dang good job of lifting each other back up and staying the course. There’s also the MUDFLATS FACTOR to consider – AKM has provided us a safe place to let our frightened faces show – because, like you, I do, unfortunately, believe that a small group in the Republican party will cheat their way to trying to remain in power… perhaps I’m a pessimist suffering from sleep deprivation.

Thank you for the moose picture. There is something extremely calming about that moose, oblivious to the greenery tangled in its anglers, or perhaps munching from it, calming me too, at a moment in history which is decidedly NOT calm.

So thank you for the sight of an animal that has no knowledge of this moment and thus can calmly wander the neighborhood with a pet name like Brian.

And that reminds me of the time we camped in New Foundland very early in the Spring before most tourists got there. So early that we didn’t even put up any “shades” on the windows of our van. And one morning as we woke and were talking, I had the sense of “someone” who had come up to the window behind me. I turned. And shrieked! And the moose, which had been placidly looking in the window, bolted. A bit later I sat up. To see the “window moose” being nuzzled by its mother. I’m sure I scared it to death too!

Thus I can report: moose have curiosity. And they are tender to their young.

Hi Anne in WA,

I’m another sleep-deprived West Coaster, though not as pessismistic. Well, at least not at this hour. Couldn’t say, why exactly– I’m certainly pessimistic more often than not (putting the angry in angryXer!), so I’m no stranger to what you and Brit were expressing. The disgusting tactics of the McCain campaign is enough to drive one into a very despairing place. EXCEPT– there’s Mudflats, and a whole lot of other communities like it (well ok, none nearly as cool), where the passion and demand for truth is burning bright and inspiring people to take action. As someone said on here the other night, these effing crooks have awakened a sleeping giant. Yes, it’s still absurd that polls are this close, but things look a lot brighter than they did about 10 days ago (well, pollwise, if not economywise).

Earlier today I was seriously angry at the McCain campaign because it became clear that we’re going to have to white-knuckle this thing till Nov 4, never knowing when Mac is going to pull the next crazy stunt. I mean yeah, it’s already clear he’s a pathological liar and I’ve known there have to be more 527s lurking and all that, but the debate delay ploy introduced a whole other level of off-kilteredness, at least for me. It’s truly creepy. But then I go off to Mudflats and Jed Report and a host of other sites and am so greatly encouraged by the energy building for Obama and against McCain’s b.s. So many people contributing and volunteering who never have before, it’s just remarkable.

I am an idealist at heart, but the ugliness of the world beats it down on a regular basis. Given the particularly insane events unfolding around us right now, I think it’s safe to say I’ll be yo-yoing being idealism and cynicism till this freaking election is over. Thank the gods Mudflats is around for the idealism fix! Hang in there; we all know where to find each other.

Other than a bell on Senator Biden’s podium that he rings each time Palin lies, here’s a debate exchange I’d like to witness:

Biden: Governor, have you read Obama’s detailed economic or foreign policy plans?

Palin: No. (or silence, or repeating the same sentence she already has like Quayle did)

Biden: Well, I’m sure if you had a plan, he’d read yours.

I just watched the Plain religious video.

Unlike Obama who distanced himself from & denounced a preacher for un-Christian/un-inclusive statements that preacher made when he wasn’t around, Palin participates completely, willfully – center stage – in a hands on, palms up, religious ceremony that equates Islam & Buddhism with “withcraft.” Her preacher clearly makes this statement before she gets up and recieves his blessing. She had every opportunity not to participate.

Right wing nut jobs will try to find decency in this “docile” example of faith, but make no mistake about it, she is not interested in the separartion of church & state. The entire theme of the sermon which led to her annointing ceremony is that this separation must end. It is only her religion and her concept of god with witch she is interested. Where’s Dorothy to throw a bucket of water on her?

We don’t have moose in Illinois, either, so I really enjoyed the photo. We do have deer in the farm field behind my house sometimes. I haven’t seen them all summer, but a whole family of them appeared yesterday, and I was so happy for their return (though our bushes will suffer, too.) Even though I’m in the Chicago metropolitan area – suburban style, we have quite a few coyotes hanging out here (sprawl has encroached on their homes of course) and many nights their cat-like screeches and then hyena cackles pierce the night solitude. It can be disturbing, but I don’t mind a little call of the wild.

RE: Moose named Brian
It’s normal to want to name a moose, I think. They are so frickin’ huge that a dumb name kind of brings them down to human size. When I was quite small, I ate substantial helpings of a moose named Vincent. He was named after the local dim-witted ranger (wildlife protection officer). Sadly, Vincent was only named post-mortem. I like the idea of naming them while they are still roaming better.

Awwwm he!!, it *was* a nice morning because of that pic, but MSNBC just played a snippet of Palin’s interview with Couric.

I’ll only do this here, but if the Republican ticket is going to make fun of Obama’s intelligence and call him elite, Palin’s diction is fair game. “ing” is not an option, Sarah. The letters are there to be pronounced. When speaking, we don’t pick and choose the letters we want to speak. If we want to be understood, we speak accepted English, especially when addressing a national audience.

Amongst friends, and I’m not your friend, words are abbreviated, changed, etc. As a writer, I have respect for the alphabet. Y’see, when letters are strung together, they form words. And words have meaning.

I agree with Snoskred – Moose are beautiful. When we lived in Washington State, our house was in a forest where elk, deer, raccoons, coyotes, ‘possums, and of course, squirrels came through our meadow. Living amongst these other beings put our lives into perspective. It was both humbling and inspiring.

And pro-lifers confuse me too – how can they be “pro-life,” yet (many) are pro-war which kills many children, women and elderly besides soldiers. Their disconnect is mind-boggling.

Got this in my morning email and wondered what others thinK?

“Here’s an interesting idea which I received on the AIG Bailout: I’m against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.

Instead, I’m in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a “We Deserve It Dividend”.

To make the math simple, let’s assume there are 200,000,000 boneifide U.S. Citizens 18+.

Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a

fair stab at adults 18 and up.

So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billion that equals $425,000.00.

My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a “We Deserve It Dividend”.

Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let’s assume a tax rate of 30%. Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.

But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife have $595,000.00.

What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?

– Pay off your mortgage – housing crisis solved. – Repay college loans – what a great boost to new grads.

– Put some away money for college – it’ll be there. – Save some in a bank – create money to loan to entrepreneurs.

– Buy a new car – create jobs.

– Invest in the market – capital drives growth.

– Pay for your parent’s medical insurance – health care improves.

– Enable “Deadbeat Dads” to come clean – or else.

Remember this is for every adult U.S. Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And, of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.

If we’re going to re-distribute wealth let’s really do it…instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( “attempted vote buying” ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President.

If we’re going to do an $85 billion bailout, let’s bail out every adult U.S. Citizen 18+!

As for AIG – liquidate it. Sell off its parts.

Let American General go back to being American General.

Sell off the real estate.

Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.

Here’s my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn’t. Sure it’s a crazy idea that can “never work.” But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!

How do you spell Economic Boom? I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion “We Deserve It Dividend” more than do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC.

And remember, The Family plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5

Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.

Ahhh… I feel so much better getting that off my chest.

Kindest personal regards,

A Creative Person & Citizen of the Republic

PS: Feel free to pass this along to your pals as its either good for a laugh or a tear or a very sobering thought on how to best use $85 Billion!!”

Got this in my morning email and wondered what others thinK?

I think it is a perfectly superb idea. Certainly wish I had thought
of it. As a Soc.Sec. Disability recipient I could use it. It causes
my imagination to run wild.

I thought it was the best plan I’ve heard. Wonder if we should pass it forward? Maybe all the way to our Congress persons.

Nice picture. Saw post about money to all on another site. Get your calculators out! Must be Gramm math because it doesn’t add up.
