Palin Investigation vs. Palin Investigation. The Basics.

23 09 2008

You may be hearing about how Sarah Palin has decided to cooperate with the Troopergate investigation. Most people who haven’t been following the ins and outs of this whole sordid affair, may think that this is a good thing. They may think she’s had a change of heart. They may have heard something about another investigation, but believe it to be ‘partisan’ and a Democratic witch hunt. Well, it’s time to leave the witch hunting to the pastor who prayed her into the governor’s mansion, and explain exactly what’ s going on with these two, very different, investigations. Here are the basics:

Investigation #1: The Alaska State Legislature/The Legislative Council

First, it’s important to know that the investigative powers of the Legislature are plenary. This means they can investigate anything they want, whenever they want, if they vote to do it. Period. This investigation began with a unanimous vote of 8 Republicans and 4 Democrats. This group unanimously chose Democrat Hollis French to direct and organize the investigation because he was the right person for the job, and they all agreed. He recruited former Alaska prosecutor Stephen Branchflower who was living out of state, to come back to do the investigation. The council unanimously approved him too, because he’s very very good, and very very impartial. Otherwise, the vote wouldn’t have been unanimous, would it?

Palin herself supported this investigation and pledged to cooperate fully….until August 29th, the day she was tapped by John McCain as his VP pick. At this point, the investigation mysteriously became ‘political’, ‘partisan’ and a witch hunt.

The storm rages, and Branchflower soldiers on, conducting interviews, and preparing a report. The report will be finished by October 10th. Have you marked your calendar? I have.

Investigation #2: The Personnel Board

The personnel board is made up of three people, all Republicans, all governor-appointed, and all working for Palin. She can fire them at any time.

The McCain campaign hoped that after they started calling the first investigation “tainted”, the State Legislature would drop the ball. Palin and her newly acquired legal staff attempted to end the Legislative investigation, and begin an investigation by the aforementioned Personnel Board.

For this board to begin an investigation, there first had to be a complaint filed against Palin. So, Palin filed a complaint…..against herself. Later, she asked that this complaint be dismissed stating it was groundless. Now she’s changed her mind and says she will cooperate with the board that she asked to investigate her.

I promised the basics, and there they are. There are MANY subplots, and twists to the Troopergate story. I’ve tried to tease these out in other posts and will continue to do so in the future. So, as tempted as I am to go on, I won’t.

The bottom line:

Bipartisan, unanimously endorsed, Palin-sanctioned investigation by the Alaska State Legislature

vs.

Republican, 3-member board, governor appointed, working directly for Palin, McCain sanctioned investigation.

You make the call.

The question is: Why

My answer: cover to intimidate witnesses.
Note: the cooepration was announced AFTER Branchflower announced he would release a report, on time, even though Palin’s witnesses didn’t honor the subpoenas. With the cover of an “independent investigation” but will interview witnesses. Anyone who has watched Law & Order knows there are interviews and there are interviews, and intervies can elicit information, or they can intimidate, influence, suggest, etc, all without any fingerprints.

Uh…. democracy vs dictatorship.

First one is democracy in action.

Ok, so I just caught up with these last two post.

First of all: WTF about the press being banned from her meetings with heads of state?? That is seriously incredulous! The McCain-Palin ticket is just a farce! I could go on here, but that would just be a waste of my time.

Secondly: Thanks for explaining all of this a bit more. Between all the media outlets I check everyday, your posts actually really do help us make sense of it all.

So how important was the last Conressional election?
Hopefully, it will never come down to this, however, at last count Obama had a 30 electoral vote lead over McCain in the very committed states. If one factors in the tossups and have them go the way they are currently tilting, Obama’s lead shrinks to 8 electoral votes. New Hampshire (4 votes) is the most susceptible Obama state to turn. I f that were to happen, the vote would be tie, sending the decision for president to the House of Representatives and the decision for Vice President to the Senate.
So again, how important was that last congressional election?

This is off topic but this is so important that everyone must see this and realize what this can do to us.

This one sentence is in the bailout legislation. Watch out America; now the ride gets hairier.

UN BELIEVABLE.. thank you AKM.. succinct rendition.

Democracy v dictatorship- well said. This financial bailout is more of that dictatorship in action… no oversight by courts or congress and all the power in one man’s hands.. does NOT pass the smell test!

If the taxpayers are going to pay- either when it all collapses or when there is a bailout- I would rather have the safeguards in place. There is no advantage for the taxpayeres to rush into this (remember Iraq war? DIRE! DREADFUL! DANGER DANGER! TRUST US! WE NEED THIS RUGHT AWAY… heard it before. It was a lie then, it is a lie now…)

I look forward to Alaska impeaching this woman! She is more of the same- the next generation of this completely out of control new con revisioning of the world.. and it is not a pretty place.

Latest version of Palin rhymes (new stanzas)

The Nomination of Sarah P.
(with apologies to Robert W. Service “The Cremation of Sam McGee”)

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By Republicans seeking votes;
The campaign trails have their secret tales —
Indeed their own “Deep Throats.”
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night in the hall in old St. Paul:
They opted for Sarah P.

Now John McCain, of Vietnam fame, was handed his hat by the Bushes.
His gang changed its game, became McSame — and fought to save their tushes.
Exxon John was shuffling on, his campaign was as dull as Nebraska.
For Hillary’s votes, they donned fur coats and off they flew to Alaska.

The economy tanks, while old John banks — on beer and big cuts in taxation.
As the gas price soars, corporate whores are buying and selling the nation.
Georgia’s got oil, attractive spoil; John’s guy knocks down hefty fee.
They need to look clean, know what I mean? Voilà: there she is, Sarah P!

“We’ve got her!” they cried, “big win for our side — a babe who hunts and fishes!”
The right wing crew confirms it’s true, the gal of all their wishes.
They shivered and shook, took one more quick look, and snuck her to Arizona.
Karl Rove assays “She’s got ‘God, guns, and gays,’ you’ve found the ideal persona!”

John’s of an age. At his advanced stage he can’t remember his houses.
The moola is Cindy’s, that pisses the Indies. Perhaps he’s forgotten his spouses!
Up in Alaska no one’ll ask ya how many houses or just how few.
Freezing weather? Palins huddle together in their snuggly exurban igloo.

John McCain fiercely dreams he’s John Wayne — he wants to nuke Iran.
With Sarah Palin, John aint failin’ his crusade on Islamastan.
“Shia and Sunni, they’re both kind of loony,” neither one can tell them apart.
“Just kill ‘em all fast, with a nuclear blast — plus elitists who think they’re so smart!”

John used to say, in that bellicose way, “First priority: getting Al Qaida.
We need a guy of experienced eye – or a beauty queen snowmobile rider.”
Sarah P. on Iraq is not deep – but she never asked to be veep.
It was McCain, war on his brain, making the choice in his sleep.

Is there a scandal? One John can’t handle? You’ve heard of troopergate.
Sarah loves sister Palin, so she’ll give her ex a flailin’. An independent state?
“Let’s break away from the old USA, and the army of occupation.
Oil drilling is fine, as long as it’s mine, to hell with your forty-eight nation!”

What now GOP, you oil oli-GOP-oly? Signs are that you’re ailin’.
Swift boats are sunk, no thoughts are thunk, just a family soap with Palin!
Asleep at the wheel, John’s lost his feel, the party sure is sinking.
But Sarah’s young, with a silver tongue, let’s hear it for unthinking!

Her style: naughty librarian. Talk: libertarian. But are things what they seem?
She’d ban some books, belies her looks, plays for the GOP team.
Not a librarian, not libertarian, she’s a censoring barracuda.
She knows Jesus will do as she pleases; shut up with your crap about Buddha!

God’s will, Sarah knows, is to drill; she’s privy to His plan.
At end of days the good Lord pays – did you say Taliban?
“Pray away the gay” – her church says today. Alaska’s a “refuge state.”
When rapture comes, her Christian chums throng Nome’s pearly gate.

“Country first”: it’s well rehearsed, at the post-disaster convention.
She’ll be a heartbeat away from holding sway– watch your hypertension.
Creation’s in for guv Palin, and choice she’ll surely ban.
And get this Pentecostal threat: no sex ed in Alaskastan.

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By Republicans seeking votes;
The campaign trails have their secret tales —
Indeed their own “Deep Throats.”
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night in the hall in old St.Paul:
They opted for Sarah P.

Thank you, AKM, for this clear explanation and recap. I really appreciate it.

So her 3 person Personnel board thingie being reactivated is just another cover-up attempt, and all those people on the committee are hired/fired by her.

I would think that 3-P thingie being reactivated just draws attention to her Legislative investigation problems; in other words, it just makes her look worse from a PR standpoint, to have two investigations instead of one. But what do I know? I’m just an American citizen.

Does anyone agree that that the current McCain/Palin strategy could possibly backfire? It seems so patently absurd that the legislative investigation could be called a partisan witch hunt. They must be hoping people aren’t paying attention to the details. But it seems some number of people are!

Prominent evangelical “anoints” Sarah Palin as Biblical prophet

“A prominent evangelical figure in the U.S. this week said Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin is a modern-day incarnation of the Biblical prophet, Deborah – primed to miraculously slay her nation’s enemies on the battlefield.

http://communities.canada.com/vancouversun/blogs/thesearch/archive/2008/09/12/prominent-evangelical-anoints-sarah-palin-as-biblical-prophet.aspx

Writing in his influential magazine, Charisma, editor J. Lee Grady likened the 44-year-old Alaskan governor to Deborah, the Old Testament prophet “who rallied God’s people to victory at a time when ancient Israel was being terrorized by foreign invaders.”

And, if it’s more you need:

Why are we letting her skate by? As an Alaskan I am SICK & TIRED of this shit!

If in fact the three member panel is entirely republican (I don’t know), that is a violation of state law as: “not more than 2 members may be of same political party.”

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/boards/factsheet.php?i=077

Petumenos (the panel appointed attorney and investigator) said he, “wanted to keep the progress of the investigation confidential.” All fine and good this is allowed under state law (the hiding secrets from citizens clause).

http://touchngo.com/lglcntr/akstats/Statutes/Title39/Chapter52/Section340.htm

However, section “c” states that, “The subject of the complaint may, in writing, waive the confidentiality protection of this section.” Which Palin did! TWICE!

footnote on page one

Click to access ethicsdisclosureform9-1-08.source.prod_affiliate.7.pdf

and again on page 2 second paragraph

Click to access 20080902_064435_PR%20-%20Governor%20Palin%20Calls%20for%20Formal%20Review%20090208.pdf

So why is Petumenos saying that this should be kept confidential in today’s paper?

http://www.adn.com/troopergate/story/534119.html

All this being the case why was the “panel” allowed to meet in an executive session (closed door) on September 11th?

http://notes4.state.ak.us/pn/pubnotic.nsf/cc52605f7c156e7a8925672a0060a91b/6e6169a465e8f681892574ba007c2932?OpenDocument

Bottom line:

Palin wants the panel (that may or may not even be legitimate) to investigate her and wants (as she stated twice in written documents) to waive her confidentiality rights so that the investigation is open and honest, but doesn’t want that to REALLY happen; and we are supposed to look the other way and let it all go on behind closed doors?

Thanks, but NO thanks Sarah!

Doesn’t anyone up there in Alaska, who is in politics, want to stand up and say “Enough already!” That person or group of people will garner the respect of all of us here in the lower 49 (don’t forget Hawaii) if they expose her for the fraud she is. The populace knows it. The elected officials know it. <—They just need to decide that their integrity means more than their position. Hell, if they go after her with guns at the ready, she’ll lose all her power to fire them anyway.

Someone with some pull up there needs to do something. I bet the Secret Service is tapping phones up there as we speak. Scare tactics, probably being employed.

Queen Mudflats, you’re omitting a THIRD investigation, the one Colberg did before the McCain operatives got him by the short hairs. Apparently Colberg turned the results of that investigation over to Branchflower, and I have read that Colberg had already taken statements from the aides who refused to honor Branchflower’s subpoenas.

What does this mean at the end of the day?

It is very possible that Branchflower’s report will be more complete—and comphrehensive—that what many people now assume. And this may be why the McCain camp is working so hard to sully it.

You are correct, and I’d mentioned that before in another post. I don’t know WHAT that means at the end of the day. Palin will now be turning over documents and emails (it sounds like) to the Personnel board. Carefully chosen, I’m sure… AKM

Yes, this is really true, and a good read for anyone who is interested in exactly WHY everyone who is paying attention is so ticked off at the Attorney General situation. I just heard an excellent interview with Don Mitchell on KUDO about an hour ago. AKM

you all need to read your ethics act.
From what you all say she could be gotten on “misuse of official postion” and “improper use or disclosure of information” (that would be inregards to your first dude, him not being an employee of the state and all)
Also so could your attorney general.
If you want to take her staff on, go to the “disclosuser and actions to prevent violations part” and see if that won’t scare the staff for not cooperating a little, cause sure sounds like they were keeping secrets and not disclosing problems. fact is they are also punishable.

Also from what you say about your personnel board about them being appointed and being beholding to her, they would have to excuse themselves.
read that somewhere too.

Might want to ask one of your lawyers up there if that isn’t their take on it, too.

my prayers are with you because hopefully for us and unfortunately for you. you will have her back soon.

ignorance is not bliss

Regarding Investigator Branchflower, readers may be reminded of what they already know: Alaska is a small state with limited degrees of separation. It’s hard not to know someone from the past.

Tom Van Flein was once shot in the face at a restaurant and almost killed by a jealous boyfriend who couldn’t accept that his girlfriend had broken it off. Branchflower prosecuted that case against the gunman. I believe the gunman may have murdered the ex-girlfriend at the same time.

No doubt Van Flein appreciated having a competent attorney prosecute the villain. Too bad he has forgotten Branchflower’s integrity since then. Given the past positive relationship between Van Flein and Branchflower, one wonders why Palin logic doesn’t object to the conflict of interest.

Alaska is now being controlled by the McCain campaign. That includes the worst of the worst, from the Bush White-house, the fat cat lobbyists that have played a large role in the current economic crisis (17 of from the very top), and of course Karl Rove definitely has his fingerprints all over this.

This must make Alaskans heartsick.

When Alaskans thought they would be going through their worst scandal in a millenia, with Ted Stevens, they end up with a White house asking for a trillion dollar financial bail out, and then Sarah Palin (the reformer) brings on this.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Alaskan citizens.

PS You may rest assured that our First Nations’ will make certain your pipeline is “to nowhere”. Don’t let your politicians, or blustery corporate fat cats fool you, our first Nations’ are VERY astute, well connected, and legally brilliant. They have been tying up things in our province, and country for years. They have the rights your natives’ should have , and are a powerful source to be reckoned with. They can’t be negotiated collectively, and the pipeline plan involves many groups. The groups that have settled their land claims are no different than a sovereign nation.

I was hoping you might cover this – the McCain campaign today on CNN suggested that “there was nothing [Gov. Palin] could do” about the access road to the bridge to nowhere, as the project started before her tenure as Governor and AK had already received the Federal funds.

Of course this is not true – the Governor can cancel state contracts, and can also return Federal funds for projects deemed wasteful, especially in light of the cancellation of the bridge construction. Remember “Thanks, but no thanks?”

Obama:
Occidental College – Two years.
Columbia University – B.A. political science with a specialization in international relations.
Harvard – Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude

& Biden:
University of Delaware – B.A. in history and B.A. in political science.
Syracuse University College of Law – Juris Doctor (J.D.)

vs.

McCain:
United States Naval Academy – Class rank 894 out of 899 (meaning that, like George Bush, McCain was at the bottom of his class)

Palin:
Hawaii Pacific University – 1 semester
North Idaho College – 2 semesters – general study
University of Idaho – 2 semesters – journalism
Matanuska-Susitna College – 1 semester
University of Idaho – 3 semesters – B.A. in journalism

Somebody above asked if this can backfire against McCain/Palin.

I think it already has. Campaigns are drip…drip…drip…drip…oh, my, the campaign is underwater!! Bail, bail….we’re sinking….

Every drip that is about lies, coverups, stonewalling, political chicanery, fighting the media adds up. In a year like 2004, when the war was relatively new and 9/11 very fresh, the incumbent survived the drip…drip…

McCain and Palin are willing to endure the drip…drip because they have NOTHING else. No policy, no issue that breaks their way. McCain as populist deregulator=monstrous lie, one that can be easily exposed via TV ads. So their only hope is to create the illusion and hope it sticks. Our hope is that more and more voices will get the truth out.

I don’t believe that the FBI has had much recent success in investigating stock manipulation.

The SEC is a totally different matter entirely, as they know the rules inside out; unfortunately, while they win the cases and get huge damages awards, there isn’t usually much money left to be seized.

Having said that, if Paulson (just using him as an example, as I’m not suggesting that he was involved in stock manipulation: I just know how much money he’s got/had]) or someone like him had to pay $699 million of his $700 million fortune to defend himself, then at least he and his wouldn’t be living high on the hog.

A pyrrhic victory unfortunately, unless the lawyers pay taxes and return some of it to the common weal.

My AP Human Geography class checked out the widget map today and then I showed them the “sign” I spent way too long watching Sunday night. When we were there, there were over 300 people watching the sign and the discussion was lively. We only stayed on a few minutes, but they were all pretty impressed and wanted to stay. We tied it in to “time-space compression” and political discourse. We discussed the global interest in US elections. We discussed the beauty in disagreements based on facts, not just personality. Many planned to go to Mudflats on their own. I encourage them to go to many different sites to read political ideas, but rarely do I recommend political blogs because the discussions usually have too many trolls and too much hate talk.

You all make me proud. Sources are cited, and you all show that people can disagree on issues. So many EXCELLENT persuasive “essays” are shared here, and Mudflats- you are AWESOME!

And the best thing to come out of today in class- we are having a “watch the debates” party on Friday. Pizza and pop…atlases and constitutions will be provided!

However, if you can’t separate personal & professional stuff it’s time to take a break from the real world and go on some “find yourself” trip or something. He needs to read Eat Pray Love & do what the author of that book did. It might re-set his moral & ethical compass.

Your enemy is now my friend, but be very careful, she’s really an enemy. She’ll use that grilling against us when it suits her. For now, all good. Later, I don’t think so.

The sad thing is that the fortunes remaining from the billions made in the stock markets since the dot.com days were extracted from the savings and retirement futures of the little people,

Instead of sending around emails about how horrible Sarah Palin is, let’s all make a donation to Planned Parenthood – in HER NAME!! And here’s the best part – when you make a donation to Planned Parenthood in Governor Palin’s name, they’ll send her a nice card telling her that a donation has been made in her honor.
Such sweet justice, don’t you think? It helps Planned Parenthood and it’s tax deductible! YES!!
(The minimum donation is $5, send more if you can – it’s worth every penny!)

Here’s the link to the Planned Parenthood website:

https://secure.ga0.org/02/pp10000_inhonor

(As an alternative, you could make a similar protest by donating to keep the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge safe: http://www.nrdc.org/land/wilderness/arctic.asp)

Make sure you use that link above or choose the pull-down of Donate – ‘Honorary or Memorial Donations’ and not the regular “Donate Online”

You’ll need to fill in the address to let Planned Parenthood or the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge know where to send the “in Sarah Palin’s honor” card. I suggest you use the address for Governor Palin’s Juneau Office, which is:

Alaska State Capitol Building

Excellent point. Of course, I have no proof of anyone indulging in stock manipulation. I am merely what you might call an active investor, and I notice the response of segments of the stock market to announcements or actions by, say, the Treasury Department.
Actually, I must confess that I’ve made a couple of bucks off of some of those responses. However I, personally, would prefer to see a return to a market where the stock price is sort of related to the value of the underlying business.

And, perhaps, a Treasury Secretary less obviously connected to the institutions he wants to be empowered to bail out.

On Fox they are still harping on the “Obama and Ayers” connection. Talk about grasping at straws. I was once on a small board of a non-profit organization. It turned out the head of the group (whom I worked with closely) had done some illegal shenanigans and ended up in jail. I certainly feel no responsibility for her actions.

And while Obama undoubtably knew of Ayer’s past criminal actions (which took place when Obama was about 8 years old), I don’t fault Obama for getting involved with the non-profit organization. Every EVERY politician or private citizen who gets involves with profit or non-profit organizations will from time to time rub shoulders with a person with a criminal past. Look at the criminals McCain cozy upped to when he was part of the Keating 5!

This current harping on Obama/Ayers is not turning up anything new, and considering our country’s problems and the way McCain is falling to pieces, it is ridiculous to obsess on the brief Ayer-Obama association..

The ONLY thing the guy Greta was interviewing seemed to think was “new” info was the fact that Obama had endorsed some of Ayer’s “radical” education ideas.

One of the ideas….America is not perfect! (or something that pretty much sums up that idea)

Err….nope, America is NOT perfect. We have enslaved our citizens, refused to serve people because of their color, and condoned men beating their wives. Some of our “Christian” groups dressed up in white sheets when they targeted white women in the 1800’s as the “White Caps”, beating and killing women they felt were immoral. Our good Christians again dressed up in sheets and did despicable things as the KKK.

No Virginia, the USA is NOT perfect. And while I would like to think we are the best country in the world, that is only a pep rally chant. Unless you’ve been to every country (and I haven’t) then who really knows which country is the best?

Ayers current crime against education was suggesting the students pledge not to the US, but the the entire world. Imagine that, wanting to reach out to ALL of the world instead of just the US.

I do not condone Ayer’s terrorist activities, there is no excuse for his actions. Yet, some of his perceptions are accurate. We will never improve this country if we are unable to realistically look at our shortcomings.

Historically what we teach our children about history is crap. When I was young, elementary and High school history was not much different than propoganda. And does that make us better than other country’s that try to brainwash the youth?

In some cases Shilo, those “people” are referred to as rednecks. Anyone see the Lynn de Rothschild interview with Campbell Brown on CNN? Barak gets maligned for stating a fairly simple truth, yet still allowed the dignity of them being people. Ms. de Rothschild however, shows her utter contempt for them by referring to them as Rednecks. I believe this interview took place the same day or maybe the day after Carly Fiorina (SP?) of the McCain campaign insisted Governor Palin could not run a company. She did however, have a great comeback from that gaffe with her line “but that is not what she has been picked for”.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy. — James Madison

‘When the government fears the people it is a democracy….when the people fear their government it is tyranny…’ — Thomas Jefferson

Those who give up essential liberties for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. — Benjamin Franklin

The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive.– Thomas Jefferson

The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home. – James Madison

The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders…tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. – Herman Goering

I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually. – James Baldwin

Anyone who has the power to make you believe absurdities has the power to make you commit injustices. – Voltaire

The cry has been that when war is declared, all opposition should be hushed. A sentiment more unworthy of a free country could hardly be propagated. – William Ellery Channing

“if there be one principle more deeply written than any other in the mind of every American, it is that we should have nothing to do with conquest.” — Thomas Jefferson

Criticism in a time of war is essential to the maintenance of any kind of democratic government. – Sen. Robert Taft, (R) Ohio

Fascism will come wrapped in a flag and carrying a Bible. ~ Sinclair Lewis 1935

“patriotism is the last refuge of scoundrels.” – Samuel Johnson

“If the American people ever allow the banks to control issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers occupied.” -Thomas Jefferson

“The individual is handicapped by coming face to face with a conspiracy so monstrous he cannot believe it exists.” -J. Edgar Hoover, former head of the FBI

BEWARE THE LEADER WHO BANGS THE DRUMS of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind. And when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so. How do I know ? For this is what I have done. And I am Caesar.”

For those who still can’t grasp the concept of white privilege, or who are constantly looking for some easy-to-understand examples of it, perhaps this list will help.

White privilege is when you can get pregnant at seventeen like Bristol Palin and everyone is quick to insist that your life and that of your family is a personal matter, and that no one has a right to judge you or your parents, because “every family has challenges,” even as black and Latino families with similar “challenges” are regularly typified as irresponsible, pathological and arbiters of social decay.

White privilege is when you can call yourself a “fuckin’ redneck,” like Bristol Palin’s boyfriend does, and talk about how if anyone messes with you, you’ll “kick their fuckin’ ass,” and talk about how you like to “shoot shit” for fun, and still be viewed as a responsible, all-American boy (and a great son-in-law to be) rather than a thug.

White privilege is when you can attend four different colleges in six years like Sarah Palin did (one of which you basically failed out of, then returned to after making up some coursework at a community college), and no one questions your intelligence or commitment to achievement, whereas a person of color who did this would be viewed as unfit for college, and probably someone who only got in in the first place because of affirmative action.

White privilege is when you can claim that being mayor of a town smaller than most medium-sized colleges, and then Governor of a state with about the same number of people as the lower fifth of the island of Manhattan, makes you ready to potentially be president, and people don’t all piss on themselves with laughter, while being a black U.S. Senator, two-term state Senator, and constitutional law scholar, means you’re “untested.”

White privilege is being able to say that you support the words “under God” in the pledge of allegiance because “if it was good enough for the founding fathers, it’s good enough for me,” and not be immediately disqualified from holding office–since, after all, the pledge was written in the late 1800s and the “under God” part wasn’t added until the 1950s–while believing that reading accused criminals and terrorists their rights (because, ya know, the Constitution, which you used to teach at a prestigious law school requires it), is a dangerous and silly idea only supported by mushy liberals.

White privilege is being able to be a gun enthusiast and not make people immediately scared of you. White privilege is being able to have a husband who was a member of an extremist political party that wants your state to secede from the Union, and whose motto was “Alaska first,” and no one questions your patriotism or that of your family, while if you’re black and your spouse merely fails to come to a 9/11 memorial so she can be home with her kids on the first day of school, people immediately think she’s being disrespectful.

White privilege is being able to make fun of community organizers and the work they do–like, among other things, fight for the right of women to vote, or for civil rights, or the 8-hour workday, or an end to child labor–and people think you’re being pithy and tough, but if you merely question the experience of a small town mayor and 18-month governor with no foreign policy expertise beyond a class she took in college–you’re somehow being mean, or even sexist.

White privilege is being able to convince white women who don’t even agree with you on any substantive issue to vote for you and your running mate anyway, because all of a sudden your presence on the ticket has inspired confidence in these same white women, and made them give your party a “second look.”

White privilege is being able to fire people who didn’t support your political campaigns and not be accused of abusing your power or being a typical politician who engages in favoritism, while being black and merely knowing some folks from the old-line political machines in Chicago means you must be corrupt.

White privilege is being able to attend churches over the years whose pastors say that people who voted for John Kerry or merely criticize George W. Bush are going to hell, and that the U.S. is an explicitly Christian nation and the job of Christians is to bring Christian theological principles into government, and who bring in speakers who say the conflict in the Middle East is God’s punishment on Jews for rejecting Jesus, and everyone can still think you’re just a good church-going Christian, but if you’re black and friends with a black pastor who has noted (as have Colin Powell and the U.S. Department of Defense) that terrorist attacks are often the result of U.S. foreign policy and who talks about the history of racism and its effect on black people, you’re an extremist who probably hates America.

White privilege is not knowing what the Bush Doctrine is when asked by a reporter, and then people get angry at the reporter for asking you such a “trick question,” while being black and merely refusing to give one-word answers to the queries of Bill O’Reilly means you’re dodging the question, or trying to seem overly intellectual and nuanced.

White privilege is being able to claim your experience as a POW has anything at all to do with your fitness for president, while being black and experiencing racism is, as Sarah Palin has referred to it a “light” burden.

And finally, white privilege is the only thing that could possibly allow someone to become president when he has voted with George W. Bush 90 percent of the time, even as unemployment is skyrocketing, people are losing their homes, inflation is rising, and the U.S. is increasingly isolated from world opinion, just because white voters aren’t sure about that whole “change” thing. Ya know, it’s just too vague and ill-defined, unlike, say, four more years of the same, which is very concrete and certain.

White privilege is, in short, the problem.

Joy,
I see what you mean. Palin constantly does that. First she was willing to cooperate in the investigation (see quotes from July on CNBC: “Hold me accountable.” ). Now, she’s not willing to be held accountable. Then, she filed the ethics violation against herself with the Personnel Board. Then, she thought about dismissing it, now she’s going through with it.

It is a pattern of shifting smokescreens and/or a shell game: “Look over there. No, there. No, there. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.”

There’s a really funny article in the New Yorker and one in ? New York rag (can’t remember right now) where an actress went around playing Sarah on Monday to see how her welcome might be. Short version: welcomed, but not voted for (men say she’s cute, but won’t caste a ballot in her direction.)

to all the Alaskans posting on this blog who are within driving distance of making some kind of protest — remember the folks who stormed the Bastille? There is something you can do to put pressure on the Personnel Board — revolt! Organize yourselves and DO something to try and stop this insanity. I can’t believe that the Alaskan public is going to sit by and watch quietly as this all goes down. It’s great that we have this online community of like-minded citizens to vent our frustrations about what’s going on, but we have six weeks to make our case. The media is a joke. Hillary’s pair would only give them balls — they would still have no brains. We can’t expect them to do anything. A group of us are going to register and canvass in NJ this weekend and PA next. It will be interesting to see what the response is. A friend who canvassed in PA last week said she encountered a lot of blatant racism among undecided voters who said they’d never vote for a black man. Sad. On the other hand, a woman in the NYC saw my Obama button on my bag and nearly did a cartwheel in excitement. I can only hope that the real revolt will take place on Nov 4 when our youth gets out and votes Obama into office in a landslide. End of story!

p.s. as a New Yorker, it is embarrassing that I’m sleeping in the same city as Palin. Can’t wait til she leaves.

Here is a sound article that i think expresses how we are all feeling. Here is a snippet

“The problem, as far as our political process is concerned, is that half the electorate revels in Palin’s lack of intellectual qualifications. When it comes to politics, there is a mad love of mediocrity in this country. “They think they’re better than you!” is the refrain that (highly competent and cynical) Republican strategists have set loose among the crowd, and the crowd has grown drunk on it once again. “Sarah Palin is an ordinary person!” Yes, all too ordinary.”

HUGE RALLY IN ANCHORAGE ON 9/27!!!
« on: Today at 03:30:12 PM »

——————————————————————————–

OK, Alaskans, this is it!

“HOLD PALIN ACCOUNTABLE” RALLY
Organized by Alaskans for Truth

Saturday, September 27th from Noon until 2pm
Anchorage Park Strip
Downtown between I Street and L Street
by the Veterans’ Memorial

Bring yourselves, your friends, your signs, and your moral outrage!

There will be petitions to sign, information to help you write letters to legislators and other ‘powers that be’, a PA system, and speakers to be announced. This is the real deal!

Why this rally?
To demand that the Governor uphold her promise to Alaskans to cooperate with the investigation set in place by the Legislative council, to demand the immediate resignation of the Attorney General Talis Colberg, who illegally told state employees to ignore subpoenas, and to demand that the McCain campaign remove their lawyers from their unlawful intrusion into the Alaska Department of Law.

YOWZA! Are you ready to be heard?? Woooo!

Cassie (Jeep Trout) —
The van Flein shooting happened in 1990. Van Flein got his JD from U. Arizona in 1989, so he was probably 24. I doubt that he thought of Branchflower as his “advocate” — the shooter emptied an entire clip into the two victims (and of course managed to kill his ex-girlfriend), and got two consecutive 99-year sentences. It doesn’t sound like it was a very tricky prosecution.

This is not intended to be an exact analogy, but my wife died in 1993 (at age 33), not from violence but from disease. Nevertheless, it had an impact on me. It still does. But the intervening 15 years have softened my memories. You do have to go on with life. My wife’s death does not affect my life much these days. (Her ABSENCE does have an effect on my relationship with my children, but that’s not the same thing).

So, for Tom van Flein: He’s just being a lawyer, a “diligent advocate” for his client. You can dislike our advocacy system of jurisprudence, but it does have some advantages over the known alternatives. I don’t know what effect being shot and almost dying has on you, but after eighteen years I think you just judge people on how they are now. I mean, if he was shooting his mouth off about one of the paramedics that saved his life, that might be strange; but this is not the case.

Of course, according to Andrew Halcro, van Flein’s law firm still has a contract with the State of Alaska. In California, that would probably be a conflict of interest, but in California the AG is elected, not appointed by the Governor, so I don’t really know what that means. Seems a little fish-like around the ethics angle, whatever the legality…

In my googletubing, I ran across this excerpt from van Flein’s legal bio, which I share for sheer weirdness:

Mr. Van Flein has tried numerous cases, both as defense and prosecuting attorney. For example, recently in March 2008 he and Mr. Tiemessen tried a four week jury trial in Anchorage before Judge Jack Smith wherein the plaintiff was seeking $5.5 million for the traumatic amputation of his entire leg due to allegedly defective machinery. Mr. Van Flein and Mr. Tiemessen represented the product manufacturer and obtained a complete defense verdict for their client Bowie Industries. He has successfully defended many health care providers, for example, getting the dismissal of all claims (without payment or settlement) against an orthopedic physician (Felix v. Dr. Hall, Case No. 3AN-06-6149 ), the dismissal of all claims against a surgeon (Malanaphy v Dr. Chennault, Case No. 3KN 06 904) dismissal of all claims against a radiologist (Barth v. Providence Hospital and Dr. Coyle, 3AN-05-9648) and many others.

In an earlier comment, I referred to “Lost”. I’d like to amend that, and refer instead to “Twin Peaks”.

I already responded to this earlier, but let me say again and add some more. Before Campbell went to wherever she is now ( I don’t get cable,) she was in NY, and I saw her a lot, and she is very conservative. She graduated from Regis College (Pat Robertson’s group,) and her 2nd husband was an analyst for Fox News and the spokesperson for Bremmer in Bagdhad for the Coalition Provisional Authority. He wanted his candidate, Mitt Romney, to be the VP, so I don’t think she likes Palin at all. But she will turn her tune around in a minute against us if it suits her.

The crisis of our nation and our constitution has woken me up form a misinformed complacency. Something else to be thankful for?
——I don’t have very good video feed to this computer as I am on dail up here on the mountain. But last night Bill Clinton was on David Lettermen he gave a good explanation of the problem and why in his opinion we should do this bail out with lots of strings attacted of course. It was very clear and easy to understand. Should be around on the internet somwhere.
I have heard several economists say that GW and company are doing this just to get through the next 40 days until the election. It will not solve the problem.
Luckily not only are the democrats not falling for it the republicans are rebelling as well. Because it appears GW and company have known this was coming for several months yet waited until the last minute to try to push this bail out through. It is thought in some circles that this is the October suprise, try to force the democrats into voting for something that is terribly unpopular among the voters (only 25% think this is a good idea) then turning around and saying it is all the democrats fault.
Barney Frank a great clear speaking senator portrayed GWs bail out plan this way. “Leave a trillion dollars in a paper sack by the side of the road or we will kill your economy.”
So what does this mean to us, 2/3 of us have some investment in the stock market, since the inception of the 401 k, the market is crashing and our retirment plans along with it. No one really knows if the bail out will even work or what will happen.
A small note of something I have noticed, the socially concious investment funds are not following the rest of the market into the toliet they are either flat or have risen slightly.
I fear this may just be the latest chapter in a book that started with enron, then folclosure, then oil, then stock market crash, not sure whats left.
Oh Times they are a changing.

I pretty much agree with you that Obama’s “bitter — clinging” remarks were meant as an assessment, not as a slam. His timing, however, was not good. He made the comments at a fundraiser in the Bay Area, where neither guns nor religion are as popular as they are in some other parts of the country. This created the impression that he was talking smack about people behind their backs. It was poor execution. You have to assume that there is no such thing as a private remark.

BTW, I live in the Bay Area, I support Obama, I have no religion, and –while I do not cling to my guns — I’m happy to have them. If McCain wins, I’ll probably get a couple more.

Had to go out to Wasilla today. Saw one Obama sign (I would tell you where it is, because it’s a business & I think that deserves some support from us Alaskans, but maybe after the election when things cool down…), and NO McCain/Palin signs!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m sure that the icky signs are out there but it made my heart feel better to see that Obama sign in Wasilla! I had a burning desire to quiz the teens & adults that I saw in Fred Meyer’s (not the reason I went out there, just a stop) about their opinions, but controlled it.

YOu dont realize it???

401 k’s are a scam.

They tried to get SSI into the market to carry it further.

The market and our dollar is going DOWN!!!!

They will do anything to kept it floating!!

Americans PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You need to realize that you are borrowing from your Grand Children and those that come from them.

At this point we have to let it go.

Yes I know it might bring hard times, but that is the best thing you could ever do for your family in the long run.

They will borrow, lie , steal, what evewr they can to keep the charade going.

One day you will realize they aRE ALL CARNIES.

They only want your VOTE.

This it why Obama is different.

I want youy to think about this for a min.

He knew coming into this that 20-30% would not vote for him simply because of race.

Yeah I said it RACE.

OK, Anyhow this alone would have made 99.99999% of black men or even white men curl into a ball and fade away.

Obama has enough courage to stand up and take these odds regardless.

Now think about this as well.

He picked Joe.

JOE!!! when we all knew that there was a 100% WIN!

Sure he could have insisted she be VP, but she wasnt really 100% interested.

Yeah she didnt want VP.

Now Joe is willing to admit theres a better choicee, but he also knows she didnt want it.

Anyhow Barrack knows all of this and is willing to stand up and FIGHT for US!!

Yes! US! thats means You and me.

Why??

Because he believes America is tired of whats been going on for the last 8 years.

He beleives that you and me want to make our lives better and make America a better place for All of us.

So why pay higher taxes you RICH people??

Because WE here at the bottom support your wealth thats why.

You need us more than you will ever know.

If the market fails how will those of you who have benifitted from us feel??

When you have to haul water and live in 130 F without Air??

Yeah you probably cant even imagine that can you??

Well alot of us you look down upon have been there.

Its time, Its TIme for all of us RIch, Middle Class, and Poor to Admit that we need each in some way or another, And to stop hiding behind the falseness of our success.

If you can sit there and say you deserve everything you have earned then you are a better person than I will ever be.

I make $12 AN HOUR.

And I feel like I am getting too much compared to others.

I have worked the hard jobs for $14.50 AN HOUR.

But I can tell you this right now.

Many people in our country get paid ALOT more for simply catching the right breaks and/or having the time to goto school for a couple years.

PEOPLE!!! stand up for your fellow man!!!

This I have and you dont Ideal has got togo!!!

There was a time when people used to be trained on the job.

Until Equal rights happend.

Then they switched to college only.

And made it cost more and more and more……………

Anyhow tired of typing, I can Live in the Desert with nothing.

Can you?

Regarding some of the topics raised in these great comments ……

Have you noticed that it is mainly the female reporters who have found – if not their consciences – at least their voices? But make no mistake, it is more about their own careers than our cause. Campbell will turn on a dime if it means more attention for herself.

Speaking of investigations; Brian Ross, the ABC investigative reporter is conducting an investigation of Troopergate. They are looking for tips so AK’s with information, here’s your chance: http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/BrianRoss/page?id=3247430

I say don’t bail them out. And I say that if you have a mortgage with any of them, stop paying. If our gov’t. must give away my tax dollars, then give it to people who are losing their homes so that they can pay off their mortgages. This will help the regular people a lot more than a corporate bailout. I am tired of all this. My daughter is probably going to lose her home because of bait-and-switch tactics used by her mort. company, and now our gov’t. is going to bail out another rich corrupt corporation. I thought that too!!!!!!! There was that really icky guy who said that scarah would give interviews when she got the proper amount of respect & deference and I thought to myself he is soooooo gross & icky & republican looking and would any woman in a million years actually sleep with that guy? He was like a younger slightly less heavy Karl Rove. It was traumatic to look at him. My eyes! Go to my happy place go to my happy place go to my happy place… Truthfully, though, about Tucker, I thought he might just be maybe batting for the other side (is that how you say it?), so sleeping with him, for me, would not be an option. Which is okay, cuz I like my guys to have a bit of backbone (and integrity) and not look like they’re going to cry cuz a girl’s picking on him. I love my gay friends, got lots of them, and I’m pretty sure they would all say that they wouldn’t touch him with a ten foot pole, and that goes double for us girls.

Military perceptions of long ago kicked into my mind. I saw it as an almost life and death experience for some people getting here. That first weekend was amazing.

I did not start searching on the Internet on P-Day itself because I guess I was the closest to the epicenter of “THE DEBUT” – 28 miles from Falconi Field in Washington, PA (now called “Console Energy Field”) – and I spent Friday night in front of my TV in stunned disbelief trying to process the local TV footage.

Now it is three weeks later in the incredible maelstrom.

Deuce2,

That is EXACTLY what we did here on Mudflats on the night of the RNC Palin speech. We Live Blogged it WORLD WIDE right here on Mudflats! It was the ONLY way some people could get through it worldwide on several continents. Some could only read the running blog commentary with their sound off at home all across the world. The only sound was of them filling their glass with Jack Daniels and various wine concoctions to try to hold on to reality. You can find the thread in the archives. AKM wrote a live commentary too to try to preserve everyone’s mental health. I guess it must have been like a whole lot of Montgomery Cliff’s in some planetary “Lost Weekend.”

I am sure we will Live Blog the VP Debate WORLD WIDE, now with even more people. Stay tuned!

Love this blog. Thanks AKM. I was wondering if anyone saw MSNBC segment a couple days ago with Norah O’Donnell hosting; she had on the usual Dem/Rep couple discussing Troopergate. I apologize for lack of specific info, but I got in on the end. Dem was a guy, but missed the name; Rep was a woman (firstname?) Carpenter. They were going on and on about the investigation, and toward the end, the Rep brought up an article in SF Chronicle I think about Monegan’s past problems with ex-wife and charge of domestic violence. (She switched the discussion from T-gate to Monegan.) There was a flurry of shouting between the two supporters, with ND trying to end the segment, when this fembot Carpenter says something to the effect “How can you defend that wife beater.” Yes, she actually called Monegan a wife beater. And no follow up by ND, or, sadly no place else I’ve been able to find. If anyone finds anything, please post. Thanks all and keep up the good work.

This just in about Palin’s new Alaska ratings:

A friend got a look tonight at Alaska pollster Ivan Moore’s latest survey of Palin’s ratings from Sept. 20-22.

Palin’s favorability/unfavorability ratings are now 68/27.

That’s a big drop from a survey done Aug. 30-Sept. 2. Ratings then were 82/13.

Of course, I always wonder who those 68 percenters are, but the fact that her unfavorability ratings have doubled in her home state three weeks AFTER she was nominated as VP seems like a big deal.

Going to bed happy now that the universe seems slightly less surreal…

The legislative body that began the “investigation” (Legislative Council) does not have the authority to perform an investigation on the Executive Branch. An investigation of this type must be performed by the house or full senate NOT initiated by the Legislative Council.

Are not most of the interviews, emails and letters etc re troopergate public? we have started a letter to the editor campaign here…letters on every issue…now our small paper is very conservative, but as we are small they are starting to print some of them (sometimes we threaten to cancel our subscriptions…ha ha hit them in the pocketbook)…suggest we all do the same in your areas

Does anyone know when the Personnel Board plans to report? Much as it would be tempting for them to give Palin the thumbs up around October 10 when the other investigation is due, could they still just hold it over till after the election, for fear that their acquittal would be rubbished in the press?

And what’s the feeling about the result? Total snow job, or slapped with a feather so they can say “sure there was something in it, but nothing serious – it was just a beatup”?

What the conservatives are doing is using automated programs to submit votes because the poll was not set up to detect more than one vote. Anybody can vote multiple – even hundreds or thousands of times. This is a dumb poll.

We need to complain to PBS that the poll should have been set up to detect one vote based on an email address.

Senator Hollis French is the right guy? I went to high school in Colorado with Hollis. He took my sister to the prom. Our Sherriff, Ferris in Summit County busted Hollis and another kid I won’t name, yet, with a huge amount of pot. French’s dad was our County Attourney. He and our crooked Sherriff covered the whole thing up and shipped the kids to Alaska. Hence Hollis in Alaska. He was a dipshit then and he is a dipshit still. I would take any conclusion he made with a grain of salt.

10 10 2008
Diver Dan

Looking at some of your comments on voter fraud, I’d have to say you need to get your facts straight. Virtually all voter fraud is Democrat. Dead people vote Democrat 80% of time. Even dead Republicans vote Democrat. Convicted violent felons vote Democrat 78 to 83% of the time. Duplicate votes are almost always Democrat as seen with the ACORN registrations. Show me one case where any of these machines the Republicans are supposed to be using has been found. Proof one has ever been used. Democrats get caught all the time, so you should be able to find the proof unless the Republicans didn’t do it or they are just way smarter than you Dummycrats. Try sticking to truth.

11 10 2008
Diver Dan

More truth you won’t like. The current financial mess started in 1977 with Jimmy Carter’s Community reinvestment act. A lousy law but it was not a disaster yet. Clinton revised the law in 1993. This unhinged home prices from inflation creating a bubble. Obama as ACORN’s lawyer sued banks in the Chicago area into making “politically correct loans” under Clintons revision. Banks nation wide were forced to make stupid PC loans. 2001 Bush warned Congress to get a hand on Fannie and Freddie. Did it again in 2003. In 2004 Republicans in the house tried to get control over the mess Fannie and Freddie were headed into. Barney Frank D Mass., Maxine Waters D CA, and Gregory Meeks D NY, along with a few other Dummycrats blocked stopping our current disaster. They did it on video you can watch from C Span. 2005 McCain tried to stop this disaster from happening with a bill he cosponsored. This time the was kept on it’s path to financial doom by Chris Dodd D CT, Chuck Schummer D NY, and some other lefties. Then there are the guys from Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, and Countrywide. Herb Moses the Fannie Mae CEO who was having a gay affair with Barney Frank at the time. Jim Johnson the ex CEO of Fannie Mae who oversaw the downfall, and was one of the 3 people who picked Biden for Obama. Franklin Raines who lost the CEO job at Fannie after a 63 billion dollar accounting Boo Boo, and now gives Obama financial advice. There are more but who has the time. Democrats are at fault, Republicans tried to stop it. The people I mentioned above fought and blocked stopping it and Obama is up to his skinny butt in it. Before you go tossing comments around, check your facts.

11 10 2008
Diver Dan

Psycologically Dummycrats do no think using logic, tending instead to “think with my heart!” Facts do not tend to change their minds even when contradictory to their beliefs. This is a mental disorder known as cognitive dissonance. So in conclusion I’m sure you will go right on thinking what you want.
