Palin vs. Press

23 09 2008

Sarah Palin finally got to meet with a foreign head of state! Her crash course in international diplomacy has moved from the memorization of talking points, to actual face-to-face meetings with several world leaders at the U.N. Palin and McCain plan to meet with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko. Palin was then to “fly solo” meeting separately with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, Columbian President Alvaro Uribe, Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

So finally, an opportunity for the press to observe and report on Palin’s self-proclaimed “readiness” to handle foreign policy issues. She’s ready because she’s confident! She’s confident in her readiness! She’s on a mission, and the mission is to not blink! Bring it on! Stump the candidate!

So, how will the press cover this? What will Palin have to say when she’s in real-life interaction with those who will potentially be her partners in international affairs that affect the world? We learned this morning that the McCain campaign had banned the press. The TV producer, print and wire reporters in the press pool that follows Palin as she travels the country, were told that they would not be admitted to the meetings. There would, of course be photographers and a camera crew to capture iconic images of the events so we can see Palin meeting with these world leaders, without actually knowing what anyone said. Convenient for the McCain campaign.

The Associated Press, and at least one other news organization objected to the decision, but were told it was not subject to discussion.

In a surprising move of chutzpah, CNN, who was to provide the TV news outlets with footage, pulled its camera crew from the first meeting between Palin and Hamid Karzai, denying the McCain campaign the high visibility (with accompanying convenient silence) they were seeking for Palin. But, after agreeing to allow a CNN producer to accompany the camera crew, CNN relented, and joined the meeting.

According to the CNN producer who was let into Karzai’s hotel suite with the photographers just before noon, Karzai was talking about his son. Palin was nodding, and asked what his name is. Karzai replied his name was Mirwais and explained that it means light of the house.

The media were escorted out after about 40 seconds.

Ah. Now we’ve learned that Palin likes talking about other people’s kids names. I wonder if Palin volunteered that her children are named after sporting events, motor vehicles, and Alaskan towns? Surely our problems in Afghanistan are over.

Campaign aides subsequently announced that reporters would be allowed to accompany photographers into the later sessions with Uribe and Kissinger.

At that point, campaign spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt said it was all just a “miscommunication.” Earlier, she had said, “The decision was made for this to be a photo spray with still cameras and video cameras only.”

A photo “spray”? Is that what happens when the decision to ban the press hits the fan?

Stay tuned, America. We may find out whether Henry Kissinger played hockey as a kid, or if Alvaro Uribe knows how to field dress a jaguar! Spray on!

I’m sure she had substantive conversations with the Muslim leaders who will be so supportive of her efforts to Take Over the World in the name of Jesus(“What are we doing tonight, Brain?”).

She’s just what the Muslim community has been hoping for,a radical Christian to do even more for global decency than George Bush.

End snark.

29 seconds ….the amount of time the press was in the room at the UN staged photo op.

29 seconds….all for a photo that will be sold to the masses with GOP scripts and spin.

29 seconds… and a potential heartbeat away…

I do find it an interesting difference between Obama and McCain, that Obama is facing the press again ( as he has done on many times ) answering any questions they want to ask ( and they are some fairly direct and detailed questions ).

From the Republicans we get 29 seconds where no questions are asked, but one from Palin as to the name of Karzai’s son……

I love the “speed dating” comment by TheraP–BRILLIANT!

This is just absurd. So now Palin has “foreign policy experience,” six weeks before the election?

How can she claim to be ready to be V-President when she isn’t even ready to speak in front of a camera. I don’t understand what Palin supporters are thinking. We’re in the worst financial crisis in 80 years and they want to re-elect Bush with lipstick!

We must be the reporters to the newspapers of the nation.

Use this link:
http://www.50states.com/news/

to find newspapers in U.S.

Pick states and newspapers. Find “contact us” or “customer service”. Send to Letters to the Editor.

So far, I’ve sent to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Florida, Colorado, North Carolina, Virginia, and more–several papers each state.

Keep letters short and succinct.

Here’s mine, for now.

Many Alaskans, including myself, support the Obama/Biden team as being best for Alaska, the nation, and the world. At this critical time in our history, we need responsible leadership that will stabilize our economy, commit to a more diverse and smarter energy policy that will create jobs, and bring ethics and honesty back into our government.

Palin is not “the reformer” she purports to be. In the last election, she opposed the citizen initiatives for clean elections, clean water, and the banning of aerial hunting of wolves, bears, and wolverines. Furthermore the Palin/Parnell administration manipulated the wording of the initiatives on the ballot so they were worded deceptively. This is not my definition of ethics in government. McCain made a reckless choice which does not bode well for how he would govern in the future.

I can just hear it now – at the VP debate – Palin will being going on and on about how when she met Karzai, Saakashvili, Yuschenko, etc., etc. she discussed pressing world events and how she is qualified to conduct foreign policy because of this.
We NEED TO DEMAND that she start facing some questions from the media.

I love it! She should be so ashamed.

PJ: Bono actually does have more international experience than SWWNBN, but so do I.

Polls are looking good, folks, and the Welfare for Wall Street plan is being beaten up as we speak…rather, write.

I just got an e-mail survey from the Obama campaign, and it looks like they’re seeking to identify the issues to concentrate on for the last few weeks.

Our positioning is starting to feel a lot more stable.

Thanks to all of you, especially AKM, for holding our hands, but don’t forget to keep on doing what we need to do!

Just when you think it can’t get any weirder — it does! They needed Palin to have this opportunity to meet (i.e., be photographed and discuss childrens’ names with) heads of state so it will look good on the resume.

Do they think we are stupid? Obviously yes.

23 09 2008

Again, this move plays to the non-thinking Republican base who doesn’t believe the big, bad media anyway. They’ll just say that now she’s actually met people from other countries, so she has even MORE foreign policy experience than when she was just living next to Russia. The lack of information is actually good for the base, who don’t want to think too much.

PJ – actually Bono has met probably more world leaders than McCoward…….he is widely respected as an advocate for the poor of the earth……..in fact…he was invited and testified in front of Congress…….he is quite intelligent and in tune..he was instrumental in getting debts to poor nations reduced…….

OT BUT IMPORTANT!

The deadlines for registering to vote are coming up in most states. Be smart and check to be sure you are registered to vote. Brad Friedman at Bradblog.com is reporting all kinds of new schemes the Republicans are coming up with to disenfranchise Democratic voters. Visit this web page to find out what you need to do to make sure you are still registered to vote:

http://www.votersunite.org/info/RegInfo.asp

Then once you verify you are registered to vote, if you can, vote absentee. No muss, no fuss, no waiting in line!

Please pass this URL around and tell everyone you know to make sure that they are still registered to vote.

In the 60 Minutes interview on September 22, Scott Pelley asked McCain (on extending the Iraq war):

“I wonder, at what point do you stop doing what you think is right and you start doing what the majority of the American people want?”

McCain answered, “Well, again, I disagree with what the majority of the American people want.”

What? He considers the Will of the People to be irrelevant? …because that’s exactly what it sounds like! Didn’t anybody else catch this?

The video is here, and the question Scott Pelley asked occurs 10:19 from the beginning of the video (there is a 30-second ad first):

They were just discussing on MSNBC about how calm Obama is. I think it is a fabulous ability that we are going to need to get us through for years to come (how about 8 years!).

It reminded me of the recent article about how Obama campaign debate folks have been studying McCain for things that will set off his temper. Hopefully they have the button on a number of them to use in the debates. Reporters should do this too – and test their theories over the final weeks. The contrast should sway a few fence-posters. Remember that big red button we don’t ever want pressed during a temper tantrum.

Here’s another way to do it. It’s a cool tool where you put in your zip and it allows you what local and national papers you want the letter to go to. They don’t send it as a “mass” e-mail, it goes out individually to each paper. You could march across the USA and send letters in every state (if you have the time and inclination). Even in 1997 people wanted Palin recalled! FROM ADN.COM By S.J. Komarnitsky :

http://www.adn.com/sarah-palin/story/513745.html

Editor’s note: This story was originally published February 11,1997

A recall of Mayor Sarah Palin is off the table, at least for now, according to a group calling itself Concerned Citizens for Wasilla.

The group of about 60 residents was formed Friday in response to Palin’s controversial firing of Police Chief Irl Stambaugh. Members say they’re concerned about the direction taken by Palin since her election last fall, and discussed a recall. But members of the group decided instead they first want to hear Palin’s explanations in person. The group developed a list of 25 questions and plans to ask Palin to meet with them sometime before Feb. 21.

I really don’t think that the press is showing much backbone. What they need to do is in mass refuse to cover Ms. Palin unless she is open to giving interviews. Okay – we are seeing a small slither of a flashlight with the media. They are getting the message. The BEST way to handle this Rovian tactic is to provide the airtime with nothing more than snow and silence. WAY TO GO, CNN!

The reality is much more sinister. Can you imagine how the foreign heads of state are preparing for this:

“What should we talk about? What CAN we talk about? Does she even KNOW what’s going on in my region? This gives my country an opportunity to look GOOD in front of the United States!” (This would be the idealist)

“Oh goody! A pretty little neophyte to further my Country’s goals, to continue the mis-information, to get her to feel sorry for us so she can plead to the American people to fight wars FOR us!!” (This would be the realist)

“Ahhhh, this is a good photo opportunity, and then I can return home and tell my people that women should never be allowed equal rights; the the United States is foolish if this is their best and brightest; that we can go ahead with our plans because she is a puppet and I can put words in her pretty little mouth….yes, honey, you just keep on believing this is God’s War…” (This would be the cynic)

We have so much more important things to worry about today than Sarah Palin and her photo ops. Executives are stuck behind closed doors figuring out if they have enough cash to stay solvent for the next week if Paulson’s plan doesn’t pan out. People are scared and trying not to rush the Banks for their cash. People are continuing to die in Iraq, Afghanistan and now, Pakistan. And Sarah Palin wants a photo op and 40 seconds….how very, very telling.

Hey, Halcrow!

Thanks so much, but I guess my “back in the day” comment made me sound older than I am. (sheepish grin…)

Actually, my two youngest kids and I lived in Belfast for a little over a year, from late ’97 thru ’98. A fascinating time, due to the Good Friday Agreement, the Referendum, and the initial pull-back (out?) of British troops. I was working for a US-based NGO.

(Yikes!!! Community organizer alert!!! Man the battle stations!!)

Spent a great deal of time in North Wales with friends near Wrexham, and traveled to London and points north several times. Berlin time was ’75 to ’80, active duty Army Intelligence and civilian Air Force Logistics, working with British Military.

So: old enough to know better, too young to care! (grin!)

I love the UK. If I ever win the lottery, I want to come hang out over there until my youngest start having kids of their own. (They’re in college now.) I’ve been fascinated by British politics, as well. Knew someone in Belfast who knew Tony Blair from Newcastle days – Labour, but was singularly unimpressed. McCain blinks…

SP continues to hide from the press,
Biden is Biden and provides gaffes to the press,
Obama calls and looks presidential amongst the press,
and McCain,….. well…
he blinks and asks for a 15 minute presser…

McCains folks have realized the narrative that AKM weaves above is gonna hurt in the debates when the full viewing public is served up sound bites on both sides, including McSame/Failin’s continued inability to be able to handle real questioning press.

Hello Mudflatters!!

My impromptu ‘talk to some undecided republicans tour’ went pretty well I think.

I went to 10 houses, at 4 of them no one was home, 1 person stated he would stay home before he voted for Obama (since he’s Republican- that works for me! ), 3 people stated they have already decided to vote for Obama and one of them let me put an Obama yard sign up (Yippee!!), 2 people remain undecided- so I asked if they would like to come over for some BBQ chicken this weekend and talk some more (my husband will now officially be working for the cause even if only as the grillmaster)!!

On the way home, I saw the funniest homemade Obama sign taped inside a car window! I’m pretty sure the campaign would not approve of it but it sure cracked me up! I went back and took a picture for you all. I guess someone feels that if Sarah Palin won’t talk to the press and by extension the American people, they would speak for her!

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Does anybody have Keith Olberman’s email?

Also: I have a friend that’s fence-sitting. She said she doesn’t like either candidate, so she’s going to vote for the one that will continue the primary-house capital gains tax deduction. What she means (I think) is the $250,000/individual or $500,000/couple tax deduction if you sell your house (have to live in it for at least 2 years). She says the Repubs brought that in and that McCain will extend it to keep it from expiring in a year or two.

I found info on it online, but it seems parts of it have been modified over the years and I can’t find any info on when it will expire or who is backing it.

If I can prove McCain is not going to extend it, or that it will be extended in spite of McCain, I think I can get her to vote for Obama.

Commando,

Republican’s don’t scare me. : )

Probably more importantly, I don’t scare them.

As far as shotguns go, I hate to admit that I’ve gotten to this point, but I always just assume everyone is armed but me and act accordingly.

Eight years of cowboy mentality and fear mongering has really done some major psyche damage to this country. Not to mention the nightly news which would leave you convinced that there’s a gunfight with bad guys on every corner.

My husband is an avid hunter and has some friends who are real gun enthusiasts and I’ve watched and listened first hand as this mentality has grown unchecked over the years.

I’ve heard the argument/excuse about having to protect oneself until I’m blue in the face. It finally got so bad that I told one of his friends that the only person I ever felt the need to prepare in advance to protect myself from was him and the whacked out lens he views the world through.

I have no ax to grind with responsible gun owners or even serious gun collectors but it makes me sick that so many people walk around thinking that they could easily take a human life …..

These two vacuous lying machines can’t do anything until the GOP spoon feeds it to them through the teleprompters. McCain changes his brilliant positions on the hour and Palin? She is a joke that is just not funny. She is an insult to America and its people. We have been sold out in the continued interests of totalitarian power and greed. She is the sheep’s clothing on the wolf (no wolf pun intended) who will remain the conveniently sequestered recipient of daily Government 101 class tutelage.
Obviously there is no ploy too unscrupulous or no risk too dangerous for the GOP machine to undertake. Win at any cost! MCain should be ousted for his reckless impulsive conduct and obvious disregard for our country.
While these power games and war tactics don’t surprise me there is something that does. I STILL can’t manage fathom how so many constituents can just blindly devour this garbage and readily defend it! They see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear and flaunt their ignorance loudly. A mass of lemmings just waiting to be told which cliff to jump off of. Come on people, open your eyes and your ears! Reality is screaming out right in front of you! You are living it! This race for the presidency should NOT be as close as it is! We are a nation with a broken economy and record breaking debt, a steadily declining world standing, a polarized bigoted society, millions of unemployed, uninsured and homeless citizens and so much more – courtesy of the Bush and company! McCain is entrenched in it. He has been in the Senate for 26 years! His campaign staff are corporate lobbyists! Come on! He is going to bring about change? He couldn’t even come up with his own campaign theme, he stole Obama’s material! He is angry, impulsive, resolute, reckless (remind you of anyone?), doesn’t know jack about the economy and wouldn’t recognize the middle-class if he ran it over in one of his caddy’s.
And Palin? PALIN?!? She doesn’t even warrant being acknowledged in any context that is even remotely presidential. If she cannot speak, be heard speaking or partake in anything that isn’t fully orchestrated by the Republican puppet-masters, then she is not useful to us. Thanks but no thanks!
The pretty-faced “mean girl” needs to go back from whence she came. Perhaps she can get the weather girl/sports reader (or whatever it was) gig back and regurgitate scripted one way dialogue on local cable. If she weren’t a pretty face, she would’ve been overlooked because aside from her looks, she’s running on empty.

I do hope you Alaskans can explain something to me, though. The Politico article states that Palin “appoints most of the people who manage the 15 departments of Alaska’s state government, containing more than 100 divisions and employing more than 50,000 people.” So is it true that around 7.5% of Alaskans work for the state? 3. All of the people who still believe that the “pursuit of happiness” involves curiosity, knowledge, tolerance, compassion and hard work and such things are unalienable rights

4. Our youth who have a different and generally more hopeful vision for our future despite the mess and the dept we will probably leave them.

LOL. I would have loved to have been there when Palin met the Afghan Hamid Karzai. Afghans have a very strict code of honor, and because most Americans they deal with have never bothered to learn this, Americans end up insulting them, sometimes beyond repair.

I don’t think President Karzai will come away from the meeting impressed–indeed, I believe he will be insulted by even having such a person so lacking in character and honor even being presented to him.

NMJ–

Back to your worried homeowners, here’s a talking point. (Soory, I was on the phone for a bit)

We can expect the lowering of property values when homes flood the market at foreclosure prices due to this bailout.

Remind your people that just as they do not recognize any capital gain when the sell at a gain of 250K (single) 500K married, THEY CAN NOT CLAIM A LOSS IF THEY SELL AT A LOSS. It’s a personal residence and therefore a non-issue for the IRS.

Suggestion for anyone out there in this position ( I am one, moved and haven’t sold old home yet) turn it into a rental. If it is business property that you sell at a loss, you can use the loss against other income. Caution: be aware of the 2 out of 5 year rule. You may have to rent it for several years. Caution: make sure all values assigned to your property is verified by legitimate appraisals to document the loss.

She says the Repubs brought that in and that McCain will extend it to keep it from expiring in a year or two.”

NMJ, I think I found your answer on Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/taxes.asp

“The statement that Senator Obama proposes instituting a 28% tax “on profit from ALL home sales” is false. Both candidates’ proposals would leave intact an existing capital gains exemption for the first $500,000 per household of profit from the sale of a primary residence. Homeowners who realize a profit higher than the current exemption amount from the sale of their primary residences might pay more capital gains tax under an Obama presidency than they would now, but those instances currently constitute a very small minority of all home sales. (For the purposes of this article, the term “per household” refers to married couples who file taxes jointly.)”

So go get that vote for Obama!

– First time I ever volunteered for a candidate. Must get those postcards out…

– First time I ever put a candidate’s decal in my car window
– First time I ever ordered candidate’s button to wear
– First time I ever alerted media on possible candidate coverup

Well, I signed the petition re Meet the Press and added the comments below.

Many of us around the world are extremely concerned about this apparent manipulation of the ‘free’ press in the United States by the current Republican nominees. The rest of the world will be greatly affected by whomever is elected or inherits the office of the President and feel that not only Americans, but the world deserves some sort of ‘serious vetting’ by the Press of Ms. Palin, who, from all accounts of her well-documented past history, is a loose cannon, both vindictive and vengeful. Apparently the good citizens of Wasilla even considered ‘recalling’ her as Mayor in 1997, because of her heavy-handed tactics used to ‘get even’ with those who did not support her. This is no longer a game, nor a silly movie with B-grade celebrity-type participants. This is serious stuff and the American Press MUST stand up and be counted. It is time for some real journalism and it’s time to show the world that it still exists in the United States. The light from the ‘City on the Hill’ is flickering out. Relight it!

We really need to put the pressure on the media to do their job. It’s ridiculous that she hasn’t held a press conference yet. Just saw a great joke on HP postet by BabsfromKansas. Goes like this:

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, his doctor struck up a conversation. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin.

The old rancher said, “Well, ya know, Palin is a ‘Post Turtle’.”

The doctor said “What’s a ‘Post Turtle’ ?”

The old rancher said, “When you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a ‘Post Turtle’.”

The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor’s face so he continued to explain. “You know she didn’t get up there by herself, she don’t belong up there, she don’t know what to do while she’s up there, and you just wonder what kind of dummy put her up there to begin with.”

Hi everyone! I so agree that this blog has been a lifeline since the announcement of Palin! Guess I’m losing an old friend to this “animal slautering-anti-woman-empty vessel”! Sure has defined people for me!

Just wanted to give a quick funny quote. Hope someone else didn’t send this on already…if so…chalk it up to Palin fatigue!

David Letterman last night commented on McCain “taking” Palin to meet world leaders today. He said, “It’s like take your daughter to work week!”. I loved it! Letterman has been really tough on Palin!

I just want to say I love all you guys!

I had to walk away from a friend I’ve had for 20 years today because he couldn’t really say that Obama was better than McCain not matter what I said. For 8 years he has ranted about Bush. Today he was ranting that Obama made money selling books that he wrote so he saw him as “just another millionaire” and he said that in his mind it’s better to just give up on society all together instead of vote for either. That does not make any sense.

This is how America got in the shit!! There is always a difference between the two candidtates running for president and this year you have to be BLIND and INSANE not to see it. I will go out and work and not rest until Obama wins. I will be out there with my friends who think society DOES matter and CAN make all the difference. I don’t mean to preach to the converted on here, but I just wanted to say it means a lot to me to see so many people who care and care enough to give their time to make our country better for everyone. I do believe we can do it.

Cassie Jeep Pike Palin- Private Mortgage Insurance is a premium that you pay to an Insurance Company when you have less than 20% down on your Mortgage. It guarantees that if you default the bank has enough equity in your home to at least break even should they have to sell your home.

Mortgage Insurance is a premium that a bank my sell you which is like a life Insurance policy on the balance of your mortgage should something happen to you. It’s usually pretty expensive a regular life insurance policy can be purchased by you with enough coverage so your dependents can pay off your debt, should you expire is a lot cheaper and a better investment.

Here’s a really simplistic reaction to the current financial crisis, which, after reading the comments to the Stiglitz article in the Guardian, I thought I’d post. One commenter wrote:

“Surely if all Americans will simply install new hardwood flooring, granite countertops, and crown moulding (thereby increasing the value of U.S. housing stock by 200%) … everything will be just fine. ;)”

I recall watching some of the “first time home buyers” shows on HGTV and seeing people buying homes with no money down – the costs of the homes were financed by a first and second mortgage. I recall thinking to myself then that these naïve, mostly young, people didn’t have a clue as to what they were getting into and I would get enraged that banks would even offer these types of loans AND that a television channel would “promote” them, so to speak.

I also would watch the home renovation shows (where did all the gardening shows go?) and thinking: why are you putting granite countertops in that kitchen?!?!?!?!? Stupid people, you’re not going to get your money back!!!!!!

This has bothered me for years and now, as Stiglitz said, the chickens have come home to roost, not only for the poor person who has two mortgages and very little equity in a home, but also for Wall Street.

As I said, simplistic.

@NMJ,

Thanks for the additional info, Cassie. You know, there have been a lot of firsts for me over the last few weeks:

– First blog I ever read. Skimmed a bunch, but figured they were all just places for folks to spout fact-less nonsense and rants
– Mudflats is only site ever became addicted to. Pretty serious, since I’ve been in tech industry for a couple of decades. Hubbie has become an election widower
– First time I ever cared about one candidate vs the other…and their platforms
– First time I ever donated to any candidate, ever. Second time, too. Probably third…
– First time I ever talked to friends with an eye to ensuring their vote for a candidate
– First time I ever volunteered for a candidate. Must get those postcards out…
– First time I ever wanted to go to a rally. Can’t wait ’til they start in So. Cal.
– First time I ever put a candidate’s decal in my car window
– First time I ever ordered candidate’s button to wear
– First time I ever alerted media on possible candidate coverup
– First time I ever sent “Thank Yous” to public officials. Must get one out to Lyda Green…

Probably more firsts to come…

Living in Ireland, I felt a bit helpless as to how to help Obama. Was asked to be a moderator of the new forum, I didn’t blink when asked! Just said yes, Charlie, sorry Snoskred. Sam Harris
NEWSWEEK
From the magazine issue dated Sep 29, 2008
Let me confess that I was genuinely unnerved by Sarah Palin’s performance at the Republican convention. Given her audience and the needs of the moment, I believe Governor Palin’s speech was the most effective political communication I have ever witnessed. Here, finally, was a performer who—being maternal, wounded, righteous and sexy—could stride past the frontal cortex of every American and plant a three-inch heel directly on that limbic circuit that ceaselessly intones “God and country.” If anyone could make Christian theocracy smell like apple pie, Sarah Palin could.
Then came Palin’s first television interview with Charles Gibson. I was relieved to discover, as many were, that Palin’s luster can be much diminished by the absence of a teleprompter. Still, the problem she poses to our political process is now much bigger than she is. Her fans seem inclined to forgive her any indiscretion short of cannibalism. However badly she may stumble during the remaining weeks of this campaign, her supporters will focus their outrage upon the journalist who caused her to break stride, upon the camera operator who happened to capture her fall, upon the television network that broadcast the good lady’s misfortune—and, above all, upon the “liberal elites” with their highfalutin assumption that, in the 21st century, only a reasonably well-educated person should be given command of our nuclear arsenal.
The point to be lamented is not that Sarah Palin comes from outside Washington, or that she has glimpsed so little of the earth’s surface (she didn’t have a passport until last year), or that she’s never met a foreign head of state. The point is that she comes to us, seeking the second most important job in the world, without any intellectual training relevant to the challenges and responsibilities that await her. There is nothing to suggest that she even sees a role for careful analysis or a deep understanding of world events when it comes to deciding the fate of a nation. In her interview with Gibson, Palin managed to turn a joke about seeing Russia from her window into a straight-faced claim that Alaska’s geographical proximity to Russia gave her some essential foreign-policy experience. Palin may be a perfectly wonderful person, a loving mother and a great American success story—but she is a beauty queen/sports reporter who stumbled into small-town politics, and who is now on the verge of stumbling into, or upon, world history.
The problem, as far as our political process is concerned, is that half the electorate revels in Palin’s lack of intellectual qualifications. When it comes to politics, there is a mad love of mediocrity in this country. “They think they’re better than you!” is the refrain that (highly competent and cynical) Republican strategists have set loose among the crowd, and the crowd has grown drunk on it once again. “Sarah Palin is an ordinary person!” Yes, all too ordinary.
We have all now witnessed apparently sentient human beings, once provoked by a reporter’s microphone, saying things like, “I’m voting for Sarah because she’s a mom. She knows what it’s like to be a mom.” Such sentiments suggest an uncanny (and, one fears, especially American) detachment from the real problems of today. The next administration must immediately confront issues like nuclear proliferation, ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (and covert wars elsewhere), global climate change, a convulsing economy, Russian belligerence, the rise of China, emerging epidemics, Islamism on a hundred fronts, a defunct United Nations, the deterioration of American schools, failures of energy, infrastructure and Internet security … the list is long, and Sarah Palin does not seem competent even to rank these items in order of importance, much less address any one of them.
Palin’s most conspicuous gaffe in her interview with Gibson has been widely discussed. The truth is, I didn’t much care that she did not know the meaning of the phrase “Bush doctrine.” And I am quite sure that her supporters didn’t care, either. Most people view such an ambush as a journalistic gimmick. What I do care about are all the other things Palin is guaranteed not to know—or will be glossing only under the frenzied tutelage of John McCain’s advisers. What doesn’t she know about financial markets, Islam, the history of the Middle East, the cold war, modern weapons systems, medical research, environmental science or emerging technology? Her relative ignorance is guaranteed on these fronts and most others, not because she was put on the spot, or got nervous, or just happened to miss the newspaper on any given morning. Sarah Palin’s ignorance is guaranteed because of how she has spent the past 44 years on earth.
I care even more about the many things Palin thinks she knows but doesn’t: like her conviction that the Biblical God consciously directs world events. Needless to say, she shares this belief with mil-lions of Americans—but we shouldn’t be eager to give these people our nuclear codes, either. There is no question that if President McCain chokes on a spare rib and Palin becomes the first woman president, she and her supporters will believe that God, in all his majesty and wisdom, has brought it to pass. Why would God give Sarah Palin a job she isn’t ready for? He wouldn’t. Everything happens for a reason. Palin seems perfectly willing to stake the welfare of our country—even the welfare of our species—as collateral in her own personal journey of faith. Of course, McCain has made the same unconscionable wager on his personal journey to the White House.
In speaking before her church about her son going to war in Iraq, Palin urged the congregation to pray “that our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God; that’s what we have to make sure we are praying for, that there is a plan, and that plan is God’s plan.” When asked about these remarks in her interview with Gibson, Palin successfully dodged the issue of her religious beliefs by claiming that she had been merely echoing the words of Abraham Lincoln. The New York Times later dubbed her response “absurd.” It was worse than absurd; it was a lie calculated to conceal the true character of her religious infatuations. Every detail that has emerged about Palin’s life in Alaska suggests that she is as devout and literal-minded in her Christian dogmatism as any man or woman in the land. Given her long affiliation with the Assemblies of God church, Palin very likely believes that Biblical prophecy is an infallible guide to future events and that we are living in the “end times.” Which is to say she very likely thinks that human history will soon unravel in a foreordained cataclysm of war and bad weather. Undoubtedly Palin believes that this will be a good thing—as all true Christians will be lifted bodily into the sky to make merry with Jesus, while all nonbelievers, Jews, Methodists and other rabble will be punished for eternity in a lake of fire. Like many Pentecostals, Palin may even imagine that she and her fellow parishioners enjoy the power of prophecy themselves. Otherwise, what could she have meant when declaring to her congregation that “God’s going to tell you what is going on, and what is going to go on, and you guys are going to have that within you”?
You can learn something about a person by the company she keeps. In the churches where Palin has worshiped for decades, parishioners enjoy “baptism in the Holy Spirit,” “miraculous healings” and “the gift of tongues.” Invariably, they offer astonishingly irrational accounts of this behavior and of its significance for the entire cosmos. Palin’s spiritual colleagues describe themselves as part of “the final generation,” engaged in “spiritual warfare” to purge the earth of “demonic strongholds.” Palin has spent her entire adult life immersed in this apocalyptic hysteria. Ask yourself: Is it a good idea to place the most powerful military on earth at her disposal? Do we actually want our leaders thinking about the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy when it comes time to say to the Iranians, or to the North Koreans, or to the Pakistanis, or to the Russians or to the Chinese: “All options remain on the table”?
It is easy to see what many people, women especially, admire about Sarah Palin. Here is a mother of five who can see the bright side of having a child with Down syndrome and still find the time and energy to govern the state of Alaska. But we cannot ignore the fact that Palin’s impressive family further testifies to her dogmatic religious beliefs. Many writers have noted the many shades of conservative hypocrisy on view here: when Jamie Lynn Spears gets pregnant, it is considered a symptom of liberal decadence and the breakdown of family values; in the case of one of Palin’s daughters, however, teen pregnancy gets reinterpreted as a sign of immaculate, small-town fecundity. And just imagine if, instead of the Palins, the Obama family had a pregnant, underage daughter on display at their convention, flanked by her black boyfriend who “intends” to marry her. Who among conservatives would have resisted the temptation to speak of “the dysfunction in the black community”?
Teen pregnancy is a misfortune, plain and simple. At best, it represents bad luck (both for the mother and for the child); at worst, as in the Palins’ case, it is a symptom of religious dogmatism. Governor Palin opposes sex education in schools on religious grounds. She has also fought vigorously for a “parental consent law” in the state of Alaska, seeking full parental dominion over the reproductive decisions of minors. We know, therefore, that Palin believes that she should be the one to decide whether her daughter carries her baby to term. Based on her stated position, we know that she would deny her daughter an abortion even if she had been raped. One can be forgiven for doubting whether Bristol Palin had all the advantages of 21st-century family planning—or, indeed, of the 21st century.
We have endured eight years of an administration that seemed touched by religious ideology. Bush’s claim to Bob Woodward that he consulted a “higher Father” before going to war in Iraq got many of us sitting upright, before our attention wandered again to less ethereal signs of his incompetence. For all my concern about Bush’s religious beliefs, and about his merely average grasp of terrestrial reality, I have never once thought that he was an over-the-brink, Rapture-ready extremist. Palin seems as though she might be the real McCoy. With the McCain team leading her around like a pet pony between now and Election Day, she can be expected to conceal her religious extremism until it is too late to do anything about it. Her supporters know that while she cannot afford to “talk the talk” between now and Nov. 4, if elected, she can be trusted to “walk the walk” until the Day of Judgment.
What is so unnerving about the candidacy of Sarah Palin is the degree to which she represents—and her supporters celebrate—the joyful marriage of confidence and ignorance. Watching her deny to Gibson that she had ever harbored the slightest doubt about her readiness to take command of the world’s only superpower, one got the feeling that Palin would gladly assume any responsibility on earth:
“Governor Palin, are you ready at this moment to perform surgery on this child’s brain?”
“Of course, Charlie. I have several boys of my own, and I’m an avid hunter.”
“But governor, this is neurosurgery, and you have no training as a surgeon of any kind.”
“That’s just the point, Charlie. The American people want change in how we make medical decisions in this country. And when faced with a challenge, you cannot blink.”
The prospects of a Palin administration are far more frightening, in fact, than those of a Palin Institute for Pediatric Neurosurgery. Ask yourself: how has “elitism” become a bad word in American politics? There is simply no other walk of life in which extraordinary talent and rigorous training are denigrated. We want elite pilots to fly our planes, elite troops to undertake our most critical missions, elite athletes to represent us in competition and elite scientists to devote the most productive years of their lives to curing our diseases. And yet, when it comes time to vest people with even greater responsibilities, we consider it a virtue to shun any and all standards of excellence. When it comes to choosing the people whose thoughts and actions will decide the fates of millions, then we suddenly want someone just like us, someone fit to have a beer with, someone down-to-earth—in fact, almost anyone, provided that he or she doesn’t seem too intelligent or well educated.
I believe that with the nomination of Sarah Palin for the vice presidency, the silliness of our politics has finally put our nation at risk. The world is growing more complex—and dangerous—with each passing hour, and our position within it growing more precarious. Should she become president, Palin seems capable of enacting policies so detached from the common interests of humanity, and from empirical reality, as to unite the entire world against us. When asked why she is qualified to shoulder more responsibility than any person has held in human history, Palin cites her refusal to hesitate. “You can’t blink,” she told Gibson repeatedly, as though this were a primordial truth of wise governance. Let us hope that a President Palin would blink, again and again, while more thoughtful people decide the fate of civilization.

P.S. – Palin doesn’t blink because:

A. Her magnetic mascara is stuck to her high-end titanium glasses;

I just tried the feedback@msnbc.com email and it failed.

Has it occurred to anyone that this PR stunt was planned hurriedly because Paulson and Bernanke were in front of the Senate committee today and it was on CSpan3?

They’ll be back tomorrow (actually today) too.

I just found this site, you are terrific and the comments are first rate.
Please America vote for Mr. Obama.
The world will thank you.

I WOULD VOTE FOR G. BUSH BEFORE I’D VOTE FOR OBAMA AND HIS RADICAL FREINDS

Any country that would let that empty-headed reactionary anywhere near the levers of power gets what it deserves.

The media brought it on themselves. I would close the door on them until they promise to be fair, balanced and unobjective.

A photo spray? What
the heck is that? I wish the
press would ignore her.

I’m going to take my camera to the Science Museum and do a photo spray. What cute words. When I’m done spraying, I’m going to not blink.

*blink, blink*

“Stay tuned, America. We may find out whether Henry Kissinger played hockey as a kid, or if Alvaro Uribe knows how to field dress a jaguar! Spray on!”

Love that line, AKM – keep up the great commentary and cunning wit.

Seriously, though… how is she getting away with not doing the Sunday morning talk-show circuit?? How long can they hide her??

“Photo Spray Palin”… has a nice ring to it.

As a former Sewardite, I’ve been loving your blog here in the fascist republic of nyc. My sister (in the new police state of Wasilla ) sent me your link. She & her husband ( & 2 planes ) live just barely outside the 5-mile no-fly zone. So, your “first dude” is wallowing in Daddy Day Care on the Central Park carousel (from today’s headline in the NY Post) while “Our Sarah” (as the fundamentalists have annointed her) meets with U.S. puppet dictators at the UN — introduced to them by Henry Higgins… I mean, Kissinger. All this amid the backdrop of the fall of the u.s. empire and collapse of the world’s economy. No news yet whether “those wacky, wonderful Palins” will make a trip to see David Blaine hanging upside-down over the Wollman Rink. Please someone wake me from this Nightmare!!!!!!

Did I see that he wanted to cancel the campaigns for 8 days…or just after the Vice=Presidential debate…..how convenient is that?

An interesting sideline of Palins recent meetings with head
Of states is why them? Almost all of these heads of states are Counties that have benefited from Bushes bellicose and free money policies. They are heads of states that want Bushes policies continued. These are all countries who have received Money, from Bush’s America, to fight terrorism and Communism O’ their gone but you know what I mean.. I think Obama should make an issue of why Iraq, Afghanistan, Georgia, Ukraine, India, Columbia and Pakistan are willing to meet with Palin to make her Look presidential. All of these heads of state have billions of reasons for, the next administration to follow Bush’s war polices. I guess they know McCain does not spell change just more of the same and worse things inane like war with Russia.

Well, her meeting with Paki president was even more interesting. Zardari openly flirted with her infront of the cameras and she just acted coy. This is our foreign policy expert? More qualified than Obama? hmmm…
