Results of Palin Jeering Poll

25 10 2008

The results of the Palin poll are in. Let’s look at the Mudflatters’ powers of prognostication:

Q. Predict the Blues Puck Drop.

a) Kids present, audible booing – 941 votes = 72%

b) Kids absent, audible booing – 227 votes = 17%

c) Kids present, no audible booing – 118 votes = 9%

d) Kids absent, no audible booing – 26 votes = 2%

The actual event had a little twist. Accompanying Sarah Palin was Todd Palin and Piper. I’m going to count this as “kids present”. And although the jeering and booing were not as pronounced as they were at the Philly’s game, they definitely passed the “audible” criteria. So I’m calling this one answer A.

Pretty impressive you guys. Now if only this had been the million dollar question, and you were the audience…

She did such a good job dropping the puck that the goalie left with an injury and St. Louis lost.

Blues’ Legace suffers hip injury after tripping on carpet for Palin

Kings Shut Out Blues, 4-0ST. LOUIS — Blues goalie Manny Legace left after one period Friday night with a hip injury that occurred when he slipped on the carpet placed on the ice for Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The Alaska governor dropped the ceremonial first puck before the Blues hosted the Los Angeles Kings. A narrow carpet walkway was placed from the gate at the Blues bench to center ice for Palin, her husband and two of her daughters.

Just before the ceremony, Legace was the first player onto the ice for St. Louis. A team official pointed to the carpet. But Legace said the official moved his own foot from the carpet just as Legace stepped down, causing the carpet to slide.

Legace fell, then gingerly made his way to the crease.

After Legace’s mishap, the official rolled up enough of the carpet so other players wouldn’t have to step on it.

Legace described the injury as a strained left hip flexor. He doesn’t believe it is serious but said it is painful. He said he won’t play Saturday when the Blues host Florida, but wasn’t sure if he’d miss any additional games.

“I felt a pull right away,” Legace said. “I was hoping it would just go away.”

But after making his first save, the injury felt worse, Legace said. He played one period, giving up two goals on 12 shots. After the intermission, the team said he suffered a “lower body” injury but did not immediately elaborate. He was replaced by Ben Bishop, making his NHL debut.

Legace is 4-2 with a 2.94 goals-against average in six games this season. He is 313-291 in his nine-year career. He was selected to the Western Conference All-Star team last season.

It was Palin’s second appearance at an NHL game this month. She also dropped the ceremonial puck at Philadelphia on Oct. 11.

Legace didn’t blame Palin for the injury.

“She’s been pretty good for our game,” Legace said. “I’m starting to like her more and more. No grudge.”

Palin “goes off the reservation”

[hasn’t carved a ‘B’ in her cheek yet, but 11 days to go!]

.http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1008/14929_Page2.html

Some McCain aides say they had little choice with a candidate who simply wasn’t ready for the national stage, and that Palin didn’t forcefully object. Moments that Palin’s allies see as triumphs of instinct and authenticity — the Wright suggestion, her objection to the campaign’s pulling out of Michigan — they dismiss as Palin’s “slips and miscommunications,” that is, her own incompetence and evidence of the need for tight scripting.

But Palin partisans say she chafed at the handling.

“The campaign as a whole bought completely into what the Washington media said — that she’s completely inexperienced,” said a close Palin ally outside the campaign who speaks regularly to the candidate.

“Her strategy was to be trustworthy and a team player during the convention and thereafter, but she felt completely mismanaged and mishandled and ill advised,” the person said. “Recently, she’s gone from relying on McCain advisers who were assigned to her to relying on her own instincts.”

Palin’s loyalists say she’s grown particularly disenchanted with the veterans of the Bush reelection campaign, including Schmidt and Wallace, and that despite her anti-intellectual rhetoric, her closest ally among her new traveling aides is a policy adviser, former National Security Council official Steve Biegun. She’s also said to be close with McCain’s chief foreign policy adviser, Randy Scheunemann, who prepared her for the Oct. 2 vice presidential debate.

When a McCain aide, speaking anonymously Friday to The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder, suggested that Palin’s charge that Obama was “palling around with terrorists” had “escaped HQ’s vetting,” it was Scheunemann who fired off an angry response that the speech was “fully vetted” and that to attack Palin for it was “bullshit.”

Palin’s “instincts,” on display in recent days, have had her opening up to the media, including a round of interviews on talk radio, cable and broadcast outlets, as well as chats with her traveling press and local reporters.

Reporters really began to notice the change last Sunday, when Palin strolled over to a local television crew in Colorado Springs.

“Get Tracey,” a staffer called out, according to The New York Times, summoning spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt, who reportedly “tried several times to cut it off with a terse ‘Thank you!’ in between questions, to no avail.” The moment may have caused ulcers in some precincts of the McCain campaign, but it was an account Palin’s admirers in Washington cheered.

Palin had also sought to give meatier policy speeches, in particular on energy policy and on policy for children with disabilities; she finally gave the latter speech Friday, but had wanted to deliver it much earlier.

She’s also begun to make her own ad hoc calls about the campaign’s direction and the ticket’s policy. McCain, for instance, has remained silent on Democrats’ calls for a stimulus package of new spending, a move many conservatives oppose but that could be broadly popular. But in an interview with the conservative radio host Glenn Beck earlier this week, Palin went “off the reservation” to make the campaign policy, one aide said.

“I say, you know, when is enough enough of taxpayer dollars being thrown into this bill out there?” she asked. “This next one of the Democrats being proposed should be very, very concerning to all Americans because to me it sends a message that $700 billion bailout, maybe that was just the tip of the iceberg. No, you know, we were told when we’ve got to be believing if we have enough elected officials who are going to be standing strong on fiscal conservative principles and free enterprise and we have to believe that there are enough of those elected officials to say, ‘No, OK, that’s enough.'”

(A McCain spokeswoman said Palin’s statement was “a good sentiment.”)

But few imagine that Palin will be able to repair her image — and bad poll numbers — in the eleven days before the campaign ends. And the final straw for Palin and her allies was the news that the campaign had reported spending $150,000 on her clothes, turning her, again, into the butt of late-night humor.

“She never even set foot in these stores,” the senior Republican said, noting Palin hadn’t realized the cost when the clothes were brought to her in her Minnesota hotel room.

“It’s completely out-of-control operatives,” said the close ally outside the campaign. “She has no responsibility for that. It’s incredibly frustrating for us and for her.”

Between Palin’s internal detractors and her allies, there’s a middle ground: Some aides say that she’s a flawed candidate whose handling exaggerated her weak spots.

“She was completely mishandled in the beginning. No one took the time to look at what her personal strengths and weaknesses are and developed a plan that made sense based on who she is as a candidate,” the aide said. “Any concerns she or those close to her have about that are totally valid.”

But the aide said that Palin’s inexperience led her to her own mistakes:

“How she was handled allowed her weaknesses to hang out in full display.”

If McCain loses, Palin’s allies say that the national Republican Party hasn’t seen the last of her. Politicians are sometimes formed by a signal defeat — as Bill Clinton was when he was tossed out of the Arkansas governor’s mansion after his first term — and Palin would return to a state that had made her America’s most popular governor and where her image as a reformer who swept aside her own party’s insiders rings true, if not in the cartoon version the McCain campaign presented.

“There are people in this campaign who feel a real sense of loyalty to her and are really pleased with her performance and think she did a great job,” said the McCain insider. “She has a real future in this party.”

Interesting little story on Ben Smith’s blog.

McCain camp hits back at ‘diva’ Palin

Responding to the grumblings from Palin’s camp in my story this morning, McCain’s camp hits back in conversations with CNN:

McCain sources say Palin has gone off-message several times, and they privately wonder whether the incidents were deliberate. They cited an instance in which she labeled robocalls — recorded messages often used to attack a candidate’s opponent — “irritating” even as the campaign defended their use. Also, they pointed to her telling reporters she disagreed with the campaign’s decision to pull out of Michigan.

A second McCain source says she appears to be looking out for herself more than the McCain campaign.

“She is a diva. She takes no advice from anyone,” said this McCain adviser. “She does not have any relationships of trust with any of us, her family or anyone else.

I just got back from voting! For Obama! Gosh it feels good. I went with few Obama supporters and we carpooled down to Norwalk where we waited in line for about 20 minutes before going inside to get our ballots. Everyone was very polite and there were many helpful poll workers on hand to assist.

You are not allowed to wear Obama pins, buttons or t-shirts close to the registrars office, but there was this one elderly man walking around looking rather lost with a very red hat on with “R” on each side of it. No it wasn’t McCain but I do think JM feels a little lost right now.

The Dems were out in force and were phone banking on the lawn all around the building, enlisting people to help after they had voted. Lots of kids playing with each other, people on blankets, or beach towels everywhere talking into their cell phones.

I keep making the affirmation: President Obama, President Obama, President Obama. 10 more days folks!

Palin has no future in politics. In fact, neither does McCain. After they lose the election, the Republican Party will shun McCain – they never had much use for him anyway, and Palin doesn’t have the requisite skill to continue upward.

Hi Scotsgirl (14:35:57)

In 2007, Obama said he would forego private funding in the general election campaign and instead participate in the presidential public financing system, if both major candidates agreed.

Obama opted out, in part because he said his campaign had created a parallel public financing system whereby the American people, by getting on the Internet and donating, were deciding if they want to support a campaign.

Scotsgirl (14:35:57) :

Obama’s position as he stated it was:
“”In February 2007, I proposed a novel way to preserve the strength of the public financing system in the 2008 election,” he wrote. “My plan requires both major party candidates to agree on a fundraising truce, return excess money from donors, and stay within the public financing system for the general election… If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.””
http://www.blog.newsweek.com/blogs/stumper/archive/2008/06/19/the-problem-with-obama-s-public-financing-acrobatics.aspx

The problem is that the Republicans have wanted to restrict the candidates to public financing but still allow outside “527” groups like the swift boat group to give unlimited money. So as usual it is a self serving distortion in the True Bush Chenney tradition.

“As President, I will protect the right to bear arms, increase access
to places to hunt and fish, take on polluters and clean up our
streams and lakes, and protect our nation’s important wildlife
habitat and wetlands. I will enhance programs that encourage young
people to hunt and fish and respect and protect the outdoors. Our

“The problem with Sarah Palin is that she makes my head hurt, and my Bullshit Detector goes all fritzy on me because frankly, there’s too damn many words attached to too damn little meaning. Scotty had words with meaning, and often if you looked beyond the obvious meaning, you could learn the truth. Same with Girl Scotty (Dana Perino) as well. Tony Snow’s words had meaning, but their meaning was the opposite of the truth.

Sarah Palin’s words have no meaning whatsoever much of the time. But we took her through a spin of the old Bullshit Detector anyway, and here is the result…

OT but I thought cute: I received a thank you from Alaskan’s for Begich recently, and then found a follow-up email asking if I (and I’m sure others) could spare a little more. What is fun is that they listed amounts and what a specific donation would help buy for Mr. Begich’s campaign. One item was “handwarmers” I believe for his campaign workers who are involved in outside stuff (knocking on doors, stationed outside with materials for voters, etc.)

I gladly contributed for handwarmers because it almost made me cry…what a wonderful way to fund-raise for a candidate. To specify ways in which we could help. I would like to think that this type of neat fundraising is representative of the candidate, Mr. Begich.

My hands are quite warm in California, I hope my small donation does the same for the falanges belonging to Alaskans for Begich. 🙂 I’m verklempt.

The magazine says its the soul of the new south and has several interesting sounding articles including one written by Jimmy Buffett. Topics ranged from how to make a perfect Bloody Mary to an article about the Southerners who fled to Brazil after the Civil War.

I had quite the laugh at the name though. Something Sarah Palin would take a subscription to in a heartbeat just on the name alone, fersure. Also.

Example of Alaska Earmarks:

_Alaska Fisheries Marketing Board. From its federal funds, the board gave Alaska Airlines a $500,000 grant. It was used, in part, to paint a Boeing 737 to look like a Chinook Salmon to promote the state’s seafood.

_The Alyeska Roundhouse received $450,000. The building is at the Alyeska ski resort in Girdwood, where Alaska Republican Sen. Ted Stevens has his home.

_Money for six “Alternative Salmon Products.” The University of Alaska received several of these earmarks, which included $450,000 for development of baby food containing salmon in 2006.

_Alaska Christian College received $435,000 in 2005. The school had several dozen students at the time.

_The National Archives and Records Administration received at least $2.25 million toward the purchase of an empty lot in Anchorage from two former Stevens business partners. The purchase cost was $3.5 million, allowing the former Stevens partners to more than double their investment.

_The Alaska Botanical Garden received $300,000 over three years for expansion and renovation.

_SpringBoard, an organization that helps Alaska businesses meet the needs of the Department of Defense, received $14 million the past two years.

_$250,000 was appropriated to plan for the Alaska Statehood celebration, set for 2009.

_$1 million in 2005 went for mobile computers for police cars in Wasilla, Alaska, population 6,700.

_________________________

Her image as a reformer rings true… I dunno ’bout anyone else, but what I’ve read on this here mudflats blog points out that not only is Sarah Palin NOT a reformer in any sense of the word, but that she is the fact of public corruption in Alaska. Even more so than Ted Stevens.

I just got back from seeing “W”. It is really well done and I think Oliver Stone will finally get some credit for how he handled the story.

However, the antitdote to anyone even THINKING about wanting a return of Sarah Palin to national politics in 2012 — is to watch this movie! We must never, ever “go there” again.

Many thanks for the link to the Obama pumpkin stencils! I’ve been saying I’d like to do one like the “O” logo, and lo and behold… and I’m known for generally NOT being a Halloween fan. Good evening, Mudpuppies! I just got back from volunteering at my local Obama campaign office. I just walked in and said, “What can I do?” So I did lots of phonebanking and a couple of odd jobs. I never phonebanked before but it was really easy. They give you a script to follow and a phone; you just pick a seat and dive in. Whenever anyone talked to an Obama voter, you ring a bell and everyone cheers. I got to ring the bell quite a few times! We were making calls to voters in Florida.

It was a busy place, with everything humming along in a quietly efficient manner. Everyone was upbeat but not over-confident. I especially liked the sign on the wall that said, “This is a drama-free zone!”

Regarding the pipeline issue, and the following paragraph

“Under a different set of rules four years earlier, TransCanada had offered to build the pipeline without a state subsidy; under Palin, the company could receive a maximum $500 million.”

That $500 million is the subsidy amount. I’m no expert, my husband knows a lot more about this, though, and our understanding is that this $500 million is what the state will reimburse TransCanada for their financial outlay. For example, they spend $100 million (or the full $500 million) for permitting, studies, etc., and we reimburse them for those costs. That is in addition to any amount that we would pay for the actual construction of the pipeline (which would cost billions, I’m assuming). Further, that $500 million is a figure that the state is committed to (thanks to stupid Bible Spice) REGARDLESS of whether or not the pipleline is ever built. So, if they have been conducting “studies” and paying staff and lots of other things since the deal was signed, they have been racking up costs/charges, and the state of Alaska is obligated to reimburse those up to $500 million whatever the outcome of this pipeline.

Frankly, I have never seen it as a viable option, the following two reasons being the primary ones:

1) BP/Exxon/ConocoPhillips are the big 3 oil producers/operators on the North Slope (and elsewhere in AK), and they were essentially shut out of the bid process. That being the case, BP & COP are in the process of moving forward with their own pipeline, Denali. So, the TC pipeline could be built (but I doubt it), but who is going to put gas in it if the big oil companies have their own pipeline and refuse to use this bogus one? Um, nobody.

2) TransCanada is completely mired in legal difficulties from other pipelines projects that they currently have, and there is the possibility that those lawsuits could hamstring them or cause such huge problems that this pipeline could be delayed for years & years & years.

Okay, so added to that, the current price of oil (approx $75/bbl) does not make a pipeline a mission critical issue, not in the way that $150/bbl does.

I said it on the Forum back on Sept 21 (I checked the date!!!!) — Bible Spice’s staffer’s connections to TransCanada were fishy!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was reported superficially in the ADN some time ago, but there was never traction to get that story widely reported. The ADN probably got pressure NOT to dig any deeper. I am glad that someone finally took the time to do some digging and get those facts out, because I believe it’s all “empress’s new clothes” in regard to the pipeline thing, and A LOT of Alaskans have been having visions of high-paying jobs for years & years & years, bigger PFDs, etc., and her invisible clothes are part of her 80% (now down to 60%) approval rating. I hope some will wake up and smell the coffee now and realize Alaskans got screwed on this deal.

Let me wrap this up by saying that her HIGHER TAXES ON OIL COMPANIES claim is also crap. A) To my knowledge the higher taxes are actually windfall taxes, and only kick in when the price of oil is $X/bbl — I don’t think the price is high enough right now for those additional taxes to take effect, and B) The taxes were exponentially higher and therefore ensured that many projects were not cost effective for the big oil companies, and actually drove out the small independents, all of which meant FEWER JOBS FOR ALASKANS!!!!!

I have said all of this over & over & over, some of you may have heard this rant from me in the past already, but I guess the rest of the US is finally catching on! Now, if only Alaskans catch on to her smoke & mirrors & missing clothes all will be well……….

Then we can start again. On November 4, long lines will form outside poll venues in the poorer parts of town and people will wait for hours to exercise their democratic right to vote. People need chocolate and pie to keep their energy up. They also need music. They need buskers, and hot dogs, and coffee.

“Rogue or Vogue Dissension in the Palin/McCain camp.”

Several McCain advisers have suggested to CNN that they have become increasingly frustrated with what one aide described as Palin “going rogue.”

A Palin associate, however, said the candidate is simply trying to “bust free” of what she believes was a damaging and mismanaged roll-out.

( No surprise there.)*

Here’s a funny from a friend in CA. Now, of course, I would say this overlooks which states are turning blue at present, not to mention the pockets of blue and the Yellow Dog Democrats I knew when I lived in GA. And of course, all the Muddies everywhere.

Some grins for Saturday.

To: Everyone

From The Blue States

We’ve decided we’re leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we’re taking the other Blue States with us.

In case you aren’t aware, that includes California , Hawaii , Oregon , Washington, Minnesota , Wisconsin , Michigan , Illinois and all the Northeast.

We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.

To sum up briefly: You get Texas , Oklahoma and all the slave states.

We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get the Statue of Liberty.

You get Dollywood. We get Intel, Mac, and Microsoft.

You get WorldCom. We get Harvard. You get Ole’ Miss.

We get 85 percent of America ‘s venture capital and entrepreneurs.

You get Alabama.

We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition’s, we get a bunch of happy families.

You get a bunch of single Hockey moms. Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we’re going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at once.

If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they’re apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don’t care if you don’t show pictures of their children’s caskets coming home.

We do wish you success in Iraq , and hope that the WMDs turn up, but we’re not willing to spend our resources in Bush’s Quagmire.

With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country’s fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation’s fresh fruit, 95 percent of America ‘s quality wines, 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools plus Stanford , Cal , Yale, Harvard, Cal Tech and MIT.

With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University ,Clemson and the University of Georgia.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite , thank you.

Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred unless we’re discussing the war, the death penalty or gun laws.

44 percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy bastards believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties..

Finally, we’re taking the good pot, too. You can have hat dirt weed they grow in Mexico.

Peace out,

Blue States

Crust Scramble,

I really think someone needs to investigate the Wassilla books!! Past and Present! Reporters if you are reading I think there maybe a very big story there.

There is noway those computers would cost One million.

What was the money from the rape kits used for? More things that make you go Hmmmmmmmmmm

______________________________________________________________________________

I remember that a few years ago (06 maybe) my small town of 7 police cars got a grant from Homeland Security for mobile police computers. The grant was for $35k so each computer with all the software was about $5k. Went googling and found that these types of computers installed and everything are around $3500 each in 08. So if this was in 05 you can figure around $5k each plus whatever shipping from the lower 48. So for $1M, you could get 2000 computers. You just can’t tell me that Wasilla had 2000 police cars or that all that money some didn’t fall into someone’s pocket. This needs to be investigated and the $$ accounted for.

I was getting my hair done this afternoon and I was fortunate enough to be able to read the latest Rolling Stone cover story which is a Barack Obama interview. Excellent interview! A must-read

http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/23589412/

There were just so many good things in this article. Everything from his fundraising successes, his plan for college students to earn college credits by doing community service, his foreign policy plan, his complete disregard for his clothes, his wish list for the White House (indoor basketball court), his anniversary present for Michelle and much more…

A couple great answers.

Do you still want the job?
I tell you what — now is the time, I think, to want the job. Because this is going to be a transitional moment for the United States. We have these moments periodically. Obviously, I wish that the Bush administration had not run things into the ground so bad, but no matter what, we would have had some big decisions to make. We have a big decision to make about our energy. We have a big decision to make about health care. We have a big decision to make about how do we revamp our education system to compete in a global economy. We have a big decision to make about our foreign policy and how we deal with transnational threats like terrorism, climate change — eventually pandemic, refugee flows, genocide.

So how do you prioritize with so many explosive crises occurring all at once?
No matter what, there’s going to be the need for a paradigm shift. The problem is that Bush has left us with very few resources to deal with these issues, and the economy’s in a weakened state. But I decided to run this time — which was relatively early in comparison to some other presidents, or other candidates — precisely because I thought the skills I have might be important at this time. So I welcome the challenge, and I think America can rise to it.

and my favorite…

In what way will people underestimate you as president?
[Long pause] Because I tend to be a pretty courteous person and I don’t lose my temper, I think people underestimate my willingness to mix it up. I don’t know if they’ll continue to underestimate that after this campaign, but I think you’ll still get columns saying, “He’s too cool, he’s too soft.” [Laughs] That’s OK, actually.

You like being underestimated in that way.
Yeah. No point in having them see you coming.

I Heart Barack Obama!

I am counting the days until we can call him President-Elect Barack Obama

It would be neglectful of us to not keep a watch on Bristol, who (in order to quash the nasty rumors) was reported to be pregnant 5 months in early September. She should be 8 months almost now, due early December. Course, we have seen zero pics of the unwed mother since that announcement.

Here’s an interesting report from the Sunday Telegraph (UK) on the coming GOP civil war. Or link to it from Huffington Post as the link’s pretty long. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/uselection2008/barackobama/3260074/Republican-fears-of-historic-Obama-landslide-unleash-civil-war-for-the-future-of-the-party.html

It connects in one place a number of persons and ideas that have been floating around recently — the fears of an Obama landslide combined with control (even the 60 Senate seat option) of both houses of Congress. Watching who wins this civil war will be most interesting. Should the Palinistas win, I can’t help but think that the GOP is doomed as a party since they’ll either chase away or expel the thinking conservatives.

Muddpuppies! I just have word about that idiot that is suing BO about his “Birth cert”
This comes from a astrologer who is following the story. Maybe we can get the Muddflats legal dept to weigh in on this? Well it seems to be good news for BO!

Yesterday, U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick dismissed the law suit filed by Philip J. Berg against Sen. Barack Obama and the Democratic National Committee on the basis that Berg lacked the standing to file the case. This is what Obama’s attorneys had maintained.

To make this somewhat clear, several parties claimed that Obama’s failure to respond meant that a default judgment in favor of Berg had occurred. I asked a couple of attorneys for their opinions and one clarified for me that the action taken by Obama’s counsel maintaining that Berg lacked standing would no doubt prevail. Obviously, he knows his stuff.

Unfortunately, this does not answer any of the questions raised in the law suit but it does make this particular suit go away. It is therefore anyone’s guess whether a party with the proper standing and right to sue will do so in another court.

OK! Now I’m really ticked. I went to huffpo and watched that witch interview Biden. He did very well. I’m thinking she’s either a die-hard Rethug or trying hard to get to a bigger market. Then I clicked the link to go watch the one she did with JM. Her very first question showed little knowledge of either ACORN or of what has caused the financial crisis. She posed it as ACORN’s fault and that sub-prime mortgages CAUSED the financial crisis. I’m officially pissed.

For the record, sub-prime mortgages didn’t CAUSE the financial crisis. It was the dipshits on Wall Street who packaged bits and pieces of mortgages into “safe” mortgage backed securities. The investment banks bought millions and millions of these securities and sold millions and millions with borrowed money. As soon as the housing bubble burst however, the values of all the mortgage backed securities had to be reduced because default rates on the underlying mortgages started rising. What you say? Why not just let the mortgages mature and we’ll still get our money! Well and good if the banks hadn’t borrowed the money to buy them in the first place. Margin call. Oh but there should be insurance! Right? Uh, well… it was all done without proper insurance on those mortgages. Why wasn’t there insurance? Cause those same Wall Street experts decided they didn’t need actual insurance. They sold what they called “insurance” but wasn’t really insurance, it was called a credit default swap and since it “wasn’t insurance” it wasn’t regulated which was precisely why they did it. A credit default swap is a contract between two people, one of whom is giving insurance to the other that he will be paid in the event that a financial institution, or a financial instrument, fails. It is an insurance contract, but they’ve been very careful not to call it that because if it were insurance, it would be regulated. So they use a magic substitute word called a “swap” which by virtue of federal law is deregulated. That’s what happened to AIG and why they needed bailed out. They couldn’t pay off all the credit default swaps they had sold. Why? Because it wasn’t insurance and it wasn’t REGULATED. If it had been regulated, they would have by law had to have the money on hand to pay all policies but since it wasn’t insurance…well you see where I’m going. And it was all done because of GREED. The cause of the financial crisis? Not the poor people who had bad credit or no credit getting a sub-prime mortgage. It was AIG’s and the investment banks’ greed that caused the financial crisis that we are in.

Do you all know that many homes being foreclosed on right now cannot be foreclosed because the stupid banks don’t even have the paperwork to prove ownership? Yes, it’s true.

I read somewhere that a few years back that Warren Buffett said credit default swaps were dangerous and would “financial weapons of mass destruction”. He warned against them. Glad he’s got O’s back.

My city is 70% Republican, 30% Democratic so I’ve been on the lookout for McCain/Palin signs but I haven’t seen any. But today as I drove by this lot, right smack in the middle of the lot was a huge handmade sign. It’s probably 12 ft wide x 4 feet wide. It said Obama/Biden and had the beautiful Obama logo hand-painted on it. It was truly a labor of love. It was the biggest sign there. My heart just swelled with pride! @Crust Scramble — the North Slope is the upper 1/3 (approx) of Alaska. Oil speak for the part of Alaska where the oil drilling is. A flight from Anchorage to Deadhorse (which is the jumping-off spot for jobs on the Prudhoe side) is 1 hour and 50 minutes.

And yes, this is a HUGE story, it dwarfs the others in the sense that Alaskans and so many others are completely blind to the realities of the situation, and the lies & obfuscation related to it could & should tear down that approval rating here in AK. Not only are so many Alaskans utterly blind to fact that this pipeline is, at this point, a mirage &/or house of cards, they are also blind to the fact that Alaska is now obliged to fund what could be an exercise in futility, and have refused to acknowledge the deeply flawed bid process. There were endless stories about the bid process in ADN while it was ongoing, and plenty of dissenting voices among the public, the legislature and the oil companies. In my opinion, BP/Exxon/COP had plenty of ground for lawsuits (and maybe they did threaten it or even do it), but ultimately the best way for them to thumb their noses at Bible Spice was to go ahead and move forward with their own pipeline.

To really understand the enormity of this, you have to understand the very strange Alaskan attitude toward the oil companies… This will be very long & complicated, but I’ll give it a shot, at least my opinion/perspective, of course:

Alaskans have made it a full-time job hating on the oil companies. Of course you will not find oil employees (such as my husband & myself pre-latest-baby) hating on them, but you will find thousands & thousands & thousands hating on them, totally overlooking the fact that almost every person in this state is dependent upon them, regardless of whether or not they are actually directly employed by them. Alaska has a huge number of state employees. State employees would be laid of by the thousands if the oil companies disappeared. Doctors would have no patients, attorneys would have no clients, population dwindles, so fewer police officers/firefighters/etc., blah blah, you get my drift — Alaska becomes a bit of a ghost town apart from the hard-core Alaska lovers & military (I think we’d find out quickly how few of those AK lovers there are).

So, a lot of these oil-company-haters want more money every year in their PFD checks. They want to know why they aren’t getting more when oil prices are so high. Enter Bible Spice with her windfall tax on oil companies. Okay, that worked this year, but next year the population sees that the money is not there (oil has dropped, so PFDs will also drop, and the $1200 extra this year is not supposed to happen again next year or ever again), so they will be going through withdrawals and wondering how they can stick it to the oil companies in some other way. They have seen Bible Spice as their messiah, thanks to those windfall taxes and the extra $1200 — hence the 80% approval rating (which I really don’t get, since my family has always hated her, regardless of that handout, we were all against it). And of course even though they hate the oil companies, they have visions of sugarplums dancing in their heads — the sugarplums taking the form of oil jobs that pay $100k per year & much more — thanks to this TC pipeline that will now be built thanks to Bible Spice.

Problem is, they just don’t get the big picture, don’t see the truth, don’t want to see the truth because it really is quite unpleasant. Much better to think that you are screwing the oil companies that you feel are screwing you every time you fill up your car or pay your heating bill or whatever, and that you will soon get that job that they OWE you. They don’t understand that the TC pipeline is unlikely to get built within the next 10 years, and I, personally, believe it’s quite possible that it will NEVER be built. And they just do NOT understand the implications of that windfall tax that was so outrageous that it led to the elimination of lots of projects by the big oil companies, and made it completely impossible for the small independents to move forward with their plans, so they left. The very best thing for Alaska would have been to attract small independents, to allow them the chance to expand their reserves/portfolios here, and have the jobs that would have come with that. So, Bible Spice did what they asked her to do — screw the oil companies & get that gas pipeline thing pushed through — but she totally screwed Alaska & Alaskans in the ways in which she did those things. They don’t get it now, maybe some of them are starting to get it, it will be a time-release thing…

God, I’ve got to stop writing &/or thinking about this stuff — it’s so frustrating! With the info about the TC pipeline showing up on the MSM today I’ve had to explain all of this to my mother & aunt as well! Argh! But I am happy to explain it to my mudflatter friends. Keep in mind that Bible Spice, not me, is the foremost energy expert of the U.S., so you have to take that into consideration when reading what I’ve written here. However, my husband did say that he was quite insulted when McLame called her that — said “I’m much more of an energy expert than she is!!!” and I agree with him. He is pretty brilliant (if he’s reading this) and is privy to some great info from meetings that he shares with me when he gets home! Of course, there are probably about 1,000 oil company employees here in Alaska that are more expert than she is, and once you add in the employees in other states, well, you get the idea…

One thing that I was just prompted to write about suddenly was spurred by your last comment. Having SWWNBN come out and having us pick apart her psyche has really brought up some ugly things for me, too. Some ugly past associations that have left scars. She is to be feared. Truly. Our collective gut feeling about her trumps any issues about her policy, her political past, or her campaign promises. We KNOW her kind. And the scary thing is that many of us have run into people in our lives like her… and have run far in the opposite direction once we figured it out. The lucky ones, that is. Some may be still dealing with the narcissists, the sociopaths, the chronic liars, the abusers of truth…..

I think I am more fearful of her from my gut, than from my brain.

Could not agree more about the whole dysfunctional family thing! And since Aug. 30 I’ve been praying for some MSM to look into that family really closely. Yes, the Dud is creepy, and even her AK politicians blast her parenting (the lack of it — she has no interest in it). But there is something very, very wrong! God I hope this story breaks. And the reason it needs to break mainstream is because she must be removed from the national stage once and for all… She cannot be allowed to re-enter politics again at any point! She is truly frightening.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes I’m afraid she will try to weasel out of any “Gate” situation, but something creepy about the family would take her down. I feel terrible everytime I see her dragging Trig around and passing him off to Piper/Bristol. This is a very dysfunctional Family! Trig should be receiving special care, Bristol and Willow and Piper SCHOOL! She is dragging these kids around…WHY???
Why can’t first dud stay home and take care??? Or maybe that is the problem?
I feel sorry for those children. She doesn’t deserve them.
Even if there’s a new, embarrassing, or grotesque story about Palin — all they have to do is tell a lie which can’t be publicly and definitively refuted before Nov. 4. They can even flip the story to make it look like a crazy lefty attack on her. Better for now for us to stick to the big and documented issues, including SP’s total unreadiness to be commander in chief. McCain and company are not above planting a false story if they can then show that it’s false and attribute the origin of the story to the Obama camp, MSM, or points left. “We were hit by the media/Obama/MoveOn etc” they could cry — just like that Texas woman who went to a battleground state to stage her “false flag” attack.
But there is one more point you didn’t mention.
Get this twist! You didn’t even have to actually own the loan asset to insure it! You could bet on other people’s loans failing and collect the insurance on their loan too! Then you could even trade these pieces of paper too with other people as the odds went up and down that the original loan would fail! The original loan is often a bond issue on corporate debt. If one big corporation defaults on a huge issue of corporate debt AT ANY TIME NOW it could trigger a huge insurance “pay up now chain reaction margin call” WORLD WIDE wide taking down bank after bank, hedge fund after hedge fund, insurance company after insurance company and ENTIRE NATIONAL ECONOMIES! Do you understand that the people trying to deal with this are ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED no matter what you hear on the MSM! No one knows for sure what to do. We have never faced anything like this in the history of the world. All on GWB’s Harvard MBA watch!
So now we have invented something being called “Save Your Corporate Ass Now Just In Time Regulated Capitalism” (SYCANJITRC) Reagan Republicans are now partially nationalizing banks they are so scared shitless!
See my post today in the Mudflats Forum on last weeks case with the Lehman Brothers CDS settlement on Thursday.
I look forward to meeting you at the next Greater Pittsburgh Mudstock so we can sit at the table and rage in our financial analysis! That is, if any of us have any money three weeks from now. Maybe enough for a hot dog and a glass of water if something explodes.
I found this guy on YouTube. I think his awakening to what this is all about pretty much mirrors everyone here so it is honest, compelling, and very much worth watching. South Side Chicago – might be off topic by the time it’s posted – sorry!
As human beings it is important to ‘speak truth to power’ in a way that speaks to Americans and others who profess Christianity. John 3:16 (for the followers of Christ among us) states it best for Christians of all stripes (denominations). We were not meant to be or become a theocracy! Sarah, go somewhere and sit down. Now. Also.
The book ‘Deer Hunting With Jesus’ by Joe Bageant makes excellent observations specifically for Christians who cling to un-Christlike biases that divide this democratic republic based on race and class. Because Christians are New Testament followers of Jesus Christ, it is imperative for those who claim Jesus to be very careful about espousing rhetoric that is divisive, hateful, and demonizing ‘in the name of Jesus.’
Jesus, of course was not a Christian, he was a Jew who paved the way for less judgmental and more inclusive worship of God. It is important to know the history and cultural context recorded in the Old and New Testaments for mildly intellectual Christians. We should however to base how we treat others from a New Testament perspective–treat others the way we want to be treated! OBAMA/BIDEN 08!
Please read the Huffington Post article by Robert S. McElvaine (you may have to cut and paste is the ‘click on’ doesn’t work:
Yes, I know about your “twist” and was going to add an analogy like “falling like dominoes” but then I noticed how long winded I had gotten and quit typing. Didn’t know if anyone would understand what I had been saying anyway. I work with people with bad or no credit (community organizer type) and help them clean up their credit reports, fight off collection agencies and debt buyers in court and out. It’s getting pretty bad out there. People are needing excellent credit to buy a house or car and I just don’t know how folks are going to be able to heat their house this winter. I put in more insulation in the basement this morning as Mountaineer Gas just got a 30% rate increase and is asking for 40% more.
It will be good to meet like-minded people. Hope to be able to get up there for the next get-together.
Hey, Preacher Aussie Puck Mule, I wanna join the Church of Puck Mule, too. The problem is, i don’t drink wine or beer (allergic, so I’ll bring the rum); I don’t listen to rock and roll (folk and indie stuff like The Waifs! I bought a rhubarb custard pie today (thanks, guys, for all the talk about pie), and it’s out of this world gooooooood. I’ll bring some to church.
As for our Joe, Joe the Senator, a study has been released that says he’s been a major asset despite his so-called gaffes. He can reach people who are more leery of Obama, and he’s really down-to-earth. I think it’s one reason his so-called gaffes don’t bother me: he either is taken out of context or he apologizes profusely after saying something stupid. He doesn’t obfuscate or unleash a deluge of colliding words–he just apologizes.
I am proud to be a Biden Babe, and I support our Joe.
Very sorry to hear about Anne Pressley. I have been out for a few hours–attending an elitist event: production of “Othello” Shakespeare in the Park–and behind on all manner of news.
Went to see “W” this morning. It was interesting. Sometimes funny, sometimes creepy. Unfortunately, probably very realistic. One serious omission, though: no Lee Atwater. Don’t know if that was artistic license, not wanting another character in the mix, not wanting to deal with his death or WHAT. I suppose it wouldn’t even be noticed by most people but he was probably the most important person in the Republican party for the 10 years that he ruled their operations–HE ran Poppy’s 1988 campaign, not W. and he was Karl Rove’s (evil) mentor; Rove was basically just a go-fer until Atwater died.
OK, off my soapbox.
I just worry about that old thing about forgetting the past. Atwater is someone who should NEVER be forgotten (whether he should ever be forgiven is another story)
