Palin’s War on Wildlife Takes to the Sea.

Sarah Palin may have a new battle on her hands. With so many endangered animals left to endanger, and so little time, what’s a governor to do?

While Palin’s lawsuit against the Federal Government to keep the polar bear from protection as a threatened species is still pending, another pesky white northern critter has reared its head to plague our governor. The federal government has now placed the population of beluga whales that inhabit Cook Inlet under the protection of the endangered species act.

When I first came to Alaska, I would often visit a beautiful little pull-out on the Seward Highway in a spot known as Beluga Point. Beluga Point is an aptly named, rocky outcropping with windblown, sculpted trees, that looks over the wide expanse of Cook Inlet, the body of water that hugs the coastline around Anchorage and the surrounding area. It used to be fairly common, when looking out over the Inlet to see what at first looked like white-caps, but on closer inspection, turned out to be the bobbing white heads of Cook Inlet’s beluga whale pod. I remember one fourth of July, picnicking on a beach across the Inlet when the pod came by. They swam back and forth, no more than 20 feet away, rubbing their long shiny bodies on the gravel bed along the shore for a good scrub. The babies were plentiful, human-sized and grey. The belugas stayed for almost half an hour, looking at us periodically with large shiny eyes, while we ate sandwiches. This is why I love Alaska.

There is a relationship that people develop with the wild creatures of this land. Those belugas, that one pod, shares our home. You might be alone and contemplative on the shore, or you might be with a group of excited visiting relatives, and it might be different times of the year, but the belugas were the same. They came, they went, they visited, or they didn’t. That community is a community, and it is truly part of the place. They were made for the place; more so than us two-legged interlopers on the shore gawking with binoculars.

But since 1995, the beluga population in Cook Inlet began to take a turn for the worse. There were only about 650 animals at their peak. In the following years, their numbers began to decline noticeably and people started to worry. It became more ane more rare to see the belugas at Beluga Point. Some hunting of the whales had been allowed for traditional subsistence hunters. The practice was halted by Native villages. Laws were enacted to keep boat traffic from “harassing” the whales. The numbers declined. Studies were done. The numbers continued to decline. Questions began to be asked about the effects on the whales of sewage disposal, toxic runoff, and oil and gas exploration in the Inlet.

Uh-oh. As soon as anyone mentions oil and gas, you can bet the hackles of pro-development Alaskans stand straight up, and they start paying attention. This is why Palin is so opposed to saying that the polar bears are anything but healthy. They have the audacity to be living on the North Slope of Alaska, and the oil was there first. If you listen to Palin tell the story, you’d be worried that Alaska’s polar bears are multiplying so fast they’re going to take over the state. The fact that the arctic ice the polar bears need to hunt is melting at an alarming and unprecedented rate, the fact that animals are drowning because the ice is disappearing, the fact that males are attacking denning females and eating young polar bears to survive, is met by Palin’s administration stuffing their fingers in their ears, denying the scientific evidence, and litigation. We’re talking money here, and nobody is getting rich off polar bear powered vehicles. Nobody is heating their homes with polar bears. So, there is only one logical course of action. Sue the government, and deny the facts.

There are now only 375 beluga whales left in Cook Inlet. The whales are not recovering despite protections enacted over the last 10 years. If you plot the line on the beluga population graph, it’s easy to see where it’s going, and why they are now under federal protection.

The listing means any federal agency that funds or authorizes activities that may affect the whales in the area must first consult with NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service to determine the potential effects on the whales, the agency said. A federal action must not jeopardize the continued existence of a listed species.

What impact the ruling may have on oil and gas extraction in Cook Inlet, the proposed Knik Arm bridge or even municipal sewage disposal is still an open question.

Palin, of course, has questioned the scientific evidence that determined the whale population is in decline. She wants no part of giving the whales federal protection, especially at the dawn of the massive oil exploration projects scheduled to begin in Cook Inlet in the next few years. She has gone so far as to urge that the whale not be listed, and not receive federal protection, citing concerns over what this might do to the Cook Inlet economy. The whale has become an inconvenient speed bump in the road.

The listing has the potential to affect major Alaska projects including an expansion of the Port of Anchorage, additional offshore oil and gas drilling, a proposed $600 million bridge connecting Anchorage to Palin’s hometown of Wasilla and a massive coal mine 45 miles south of Anchorage.

The state does have serious concerns about the low population of beluga whales in Cook Inlet and has had those concerns for many years, Palin said in a statement. “However, we believe that this endangered listing is premature,” she said.Palin in April successfully lobbied for a six-month delay in a listing decision until a count of the whales this summer could be included in deliberations. That count showed no increase over 2007 numbers

While polar bears are beloved by all, and their protection has been covered extensively by conservation groups, and to some extent by the mainstream media, Cook Inlet belugas are hardly the animal rock stars of the arctic. However, the national spotlight is now focused on Alaska as never before. Palin’s unlikely Vice Presidential nomination may actually be a blessing in disguise for these animals who otherwise might have declined in obscurity, fighting off a lawsuit that might have gone unnoticed by the humans in the Lower 48.

Okay I’ll cede that the blessing in disguise of Palin’s nomination is the notice of the Lower 48 on the various issues that may seem Alaska only related but are truly globally related. Now will you take her back, please?

I do appreciate your fondness for wildlife, and the horrible loss we are facing.

I live in New Jersey and although I am not an expert scientist by any means, I am a life-long devoted observer of nature and particularly trees.

It appears obvious to me that ALL the trees in this region are dying, however, everyone but me seems oblivious. It makes me feel like I am going crazy! From what I see these past 8 weeks or so, every type of tree is horribly stressed. Hickory, locust, ash, sycamore, and black walnuts look particularly bare.

I recently took a trip to Newport, Rhode Island and all the way there I saw the same thing – trees whose leaves are scorched, crowns are thin or gone entirely. The vast majority of evergreens have yellowing needles and are bursting with cones, a signal of impending demise.

The decline is so prevalent and is affecting every age and every species of deciduous and coniferous tree. I believe no one disease or pollutant can be the cause, which most likely is the lack of water due to climate change. Assuming this is true, the situation will only worsen. From what I have read, once a tree exhibits the clear symptoms of decline, such as are readily evident and ubiquitous already, it cannot be reversed and it is only a matter of time before it dies completely.

I have contacted the state drought monitoring agency and they claim there is no drought. However, their measurement of aquifers does not reflect the change in rainfall patterns, which have gone from more frequent, gentler showers to infrequent heavy downpours. The state officials seem to willfully wish not to expand their criteria of what constitutes a threat.

It seems to me the trees are dying of thirst. When they are all dead, a few years hence, they will present an enormous fire risk, as well as fall all over power and telephone lines, greatly disrupting the business of daily life. All the birds that nest in trees will die. The insect population will explode. And I’m sure there are countless other negative effects, not to mention, the tragic loss of natural beauty.

I personally live on a small farm with hundreds of dying trees and from past experience I know it costs easily $1000 to have a good sized tree removed. I certainly can’t afford that!

It is amazing and frightening to me that there is not even any discussion about what is happening in plain view.

Thank you for reading my rant.

Sincerely,

Gail Zawacki

I just can’t stand it any longer and definitely won’t be watching SNL (I know who cares but she’s an idiot and like I said before I’d be really surprised if she actually sticks to a “script.”) And no You/Me/Theytube on anything about her. Out of sight and out of mind. I’m stressing out way too much and am seriously concerned for our future. It’s all happy thoughts of a happy president in the happy house.

I think it’s time the World Wildlife Fund used the Paling image as an example of nature’s enemy – a despoiler of our planet. She obviously doesn’t care a whit for her children’s future. At the rate she’s going, she will do everything possible to expedite the end of life as we know it.

The sooner she’s sent packing, the better. Given the types that are attracted to her (from what I have seen of her ‘rally followers’), she is just a walking and yapping advertisement for how low America has allowed these sick creatures to drag it.

Our coast redwoods, here in Northern California, are doing just fine on their own. They even survive fires very well due to their thick bark.

Their only real enemy is loggers. Fortunately, many environmental organizations have raised funds to buy up the lands they grow on, in order to protect them.

I’m sure if McPalin had their way, I’d be seeing Oregon from my front door instead of 200 to 300 foot tall trees that can be older than 2000 years.

I hope experts in areas you guys have mentioned are looking into the problems you are describing.

If you want to know why stuff like this keeps happening listen to a stream of the NPR Science Friday show from today. There were actually callers questioning the validity of global warming. I didn’t think there were really people out there that didn’t believe it — apart from Bible Spice and those who attend her church — it’s inconceivable to me that people don’t understand that there has to be some adverse affect when everyone is driving huge cars, cutting down forests, dumping garbage in the ocean, etc.

Alaska is like a little microcosm of the rest of the world in terms of global warming and the effects of plundering mineral wealth… It’s scary up here.

I too had a strange and wonderful experience with two beluga whales who seemed to want to communicate with the humans who had confined them–it was in a Seattle zoo on a day when no one else was there. These two belugas knew we were there and actually connected with us–not a performance or anything like it. What lovely, stunning creatures. It’s so sad to see their disappearance in the wild–if all we ever have of the wilderness is the caged equivalent, we will be a sadder, sorrier place. Shame on Sarah Palin and her ilk.

In Southern California, there have been a few whales that washed up on the shore injured then dead, likely because of ship traffic in the Santa Barbara Channel, between California and the Channel Islands (yes, I really can see two of them from my house!).

The world’s largest mining company, the Australian BHP Billiton, abusive to the indiginous people, the environment, etc. wanted to put an experimental LNG regasification platform off shore, Cabrillo Port http://www.vcreporter.com/cms/story/detail/?id=4523&IssueNum=119, near the Channel Islands National Park. http://www.nps.gov/chis/

The reason I bring this up is that a coalition of wealthy Malibu residents , poor Latinos and regular middle class Ventura County residents and children BEAT THIS PROPOSAL DOWN, by getting educated, working together and helping each other when we were down.

I agree with this – I kept wondering why/how Palin could disply such a disconnect re: protecting nature when she was raised in Alaska. But then I read about an interview with her where she admitted she believed the end of the world would be during her lifetime. I don’t know a thing about beluga whales, but I do know alot about gopher tortoises, indigo snakes and pine snakes in Georgia. And what I know is this…regardless of government putting them on the protected list or saying they’re protected, here, at least, there is no incentive to keep a place for them. Nobody thinks about these “lesser creatures”. Gopher tortoises are extremely important to many other animals on the sand ridges – snakes, lizards, and birds, but to most, that is prime development opportunity. I’ve seen folks move to the country – but they really don’t want to make a place for the creatures that were there first. It saddens me that most most folks don’t take a ‘wander’ just to see what’s moving around them. It saddens me that most are afraid of lizards and snakes and they’re really not interested in meeting their neighbors and learning more about them.

I feed birds and I am constantly amazed that folks that come into my house and enjoy watching them, aren’t the least bit curious about them. A cardinal is a redbird, a chickadee is a little bird, a hummingbird is a moth (?!).

We live on the backs of this creatures – without them we will pass into extinction.

this is about the ship strikes and the whales in my disappearing post:
http://channelislands.noaa.gov/focus/alert.html
During the fall of 2007 there were four confirmed blue whale fatalities in the Santa Barbara Channel. Previously, the greatest number of blue whale fatalities in one year off of California was three (1988 and 2002 respectively), and these fatalities were separated by hundreds of miles (Marin to San Diego County in 2002) and several months. Of the whales that were examined, including a pregnant adult female with a fetus, all were determined to be struck by ships. The reason for this level of ship strikes in a relatively small area is speculative but may be related to an unusually shallow and/or dense aggregation of krill or increased local density of whales in the Santa Barbara Channel.
NOAA Fisheries, the federal agency responsible for protecting marine mammals and endangered marine life, designated the situation as an Unusual Mortality Event (UME).

Dear witsendnj – you aren’t going crazy…below are some links verifying that our trees are indeed dying at an unprecedented rate:

From Publishers Weekly
In a thoroughly researched book, Little (Hope for the Land) documents the depressing state of U.S. forests. Individual trees are dying at unprecedented rates, numerous woody species are at risk of extinction and the country’s forests are disappearing as intact ecosystems. The devastation stretches across the land and is eerily similar to losses observed in Europe. Although the immediate cause of death varies, Little and the numerous ecologists and foresters whom he interviewed argue convincingly that the best explanation is ultimately the environmental havoc humans have wrought. Acid rain, heavy metal contamination, smog, increased ultraviolet rays streaming through the growing hole in the ozone layer and atrocious management of forests?from clear-cutting to fire suppression?have so weakened individual trees, as well as ecosystems, that once-routine pests may now be responsible for destruction on an unprecedented scale. This book should significantly alter the way we think about our relationship to the natural world.

Palin and her ilk are “dominist’s believing that man has dominion over the plant and animal kingdom” Most religions stress to walk softy and the earth and try to be steward of the earth and its plants and animals. Here is a quote from a blog:

Christo-fascism, Christianist, Domionist

I don’t know exactly what to call it, but in this season of increasing political news and upcoming elections I have to join with my good friend Paul and point to something very dangerous in our American Church. For the last several years an element of American Christianity as been very closely associated with a narrow political platform, and transforming itself into something barely recognizable as historically Christian. What has our Faith become? What do those outside the Church see us as? For a disturbing glimpse see the image on this post, or the link.
Link:
http://atheism.about.com/od/religiousright/ig/Christian-Propaganda-Posters/God-Conservative-Republican.htm
The link is disturbing, has a picture of a cross that says “God is a Republican”

This is the narrow minded fascism you see at Palin rallies.
At the end of the link…the cross with “God is a repubican…he says”This image is based on a Nazi propaganda poster” So this is what we are really fighting against.

One of the highlights of my trips to Alaska was watching whales. Aside from the ethical issues of despoiling the planet and exterminating wildlife, you’d think SP might recognize that tourism which is pretty important to Alaska, depends on wildlife and wilderness. I guess, however, the oil industry has a greater impact/influence on the Alaskan economy than tourism.

BTW, for those of you who don’t get cable, Talking Points memo has excerpts from the Michelle Bachmann meltdown. http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/ My not-very-political husband heard some of this and simply couldn’t believe this was coming from a member of congress.

something I just received in my email … hmmmmm
545 PEOPLE
By Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The President does.

You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don’t control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices. 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator’s responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? The leader of the majority party. He/She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted — by present facts — of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ , it’s because they want them in IRAQ .

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like ‘the economy,’ ‘inflation,’ or ‘politics’ that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

ABC is reporting that Susan Collins (R-ME) has asked the McCain campaign to stop the robo-calls. I’d been gone from AK since the early 80’s, and personally, it does seem ignoble and somewhat humiliating that all this brouhaha erupted and the tundra is getting a little hotter, but it’s been informative. As for the matter of fellow mammalian dishonor, it all seemed to hit the fan for me with Exxon Valdez, but of course those bent on maintaining ‘self-destruct’ mode (i.e. Ms. Palin and her ilk) would try to counter with some babble about abortions.

Each year, during drives down the Seward Highway on various fly fishing trips I look forward to the good chance of seeing belugas chasing salmon. A decade ago, I remember counting well over a hundred at a time. In the last few years I’ve noticed fewer and fewer belugas. This past season was the very first where I did not see a single beluga whale.

Sarah’s solution for nearly all of her State’s needs are to Drill. Mine. Drill. Be it in ANWR or Bristol Bay, Palin cares not for repercussions to future generations of species or humans for that matter. Everything about Palin is about the now.

Just donated to Tinklenberg. His web site indicates he’s a Red to Blue candidate, which I think means he’s getting funding from the DCCC. Bachmann is a disgrace.

BTW, I keep hearing rumors that Powell is getting ready to endorse Obama. Has anyone else heard that?

Just sitting here thinking about all the information I’ve had to digest, choke-on and spit out over the last couple of months. The friends & enemies I’ve made, the neglected house & yard, the skipped meals, the sleepless nights and I FINALLY decided just WHY I’m voting for Obama.
And it is so damn simple.

He makes “ME” feel like I did when I heard John Kennedy’s Inaugural Speech in 1961. And I haven’t felt that way about a politician since. That’s a long time to wait for someone else to come along.

Reread it if you haven’t for awhile & just IMAGINE hearing something like that from Barack. It’s sooooooo easy to do.
There are lots and lots of other reasons I’m voting for him ~ but that’s my biggie. . .

as a graduate of MIZZOU…one of the great journalism schools in the nation (before INTERNET, and .com news) I have to take a moment to note that many of the great newpapers in the nation (CHICAGO TRIB, CHICAGO SUN, LA TIMES, WASHINGTON POST, ) have all endorsed obama – a few breaking a long republican tradition. This may be the last sigh of newpaper journalism….but, we have to stop and salute their choice in this election!

17 10 2008

from pollster.com, which i guess is linking to “politicshome.com” :

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell is scheduled to appear on Meet the Press this Sunday. There has been much speculation by mainstream media and bloggers that Powell will use this appearance to endorse a presidential candidate, but whether it will be Barack Obama or John McCain is still in question.

Today, Online100 panel members predicted which candidate they think Powell will endorse. 75% of the panel thinks Powell will endorse Barack Obama; 12% thinks he will endorse McCain. 13% were unsure of Powell’s choice.

Thanks everyone!!! This upnorth MInnesota heart is bursting with gratitude to all of you who “have our back” (to use Deb’s phrase) vis a vis the Michelle Bachman ignominy. And wow…over $50,000.00 raised since she opened her trap this afternoon. I’m overwhelmed. This is what change looks like. We are indeed the change we’ve been waiting for. If anyone needed evidence of the power of the internet and the connections it fosters…I say “looky right here”. Looky see what we can do!

And, yes, Pamela…Tinklenberg does have a chance and no one saw it coming. Whether it’s Obama’s generous coat tails, the economy, or a backlash against her hidiousness, or all of the above and more…he is now neck and neck. It’s close enough so that the DNCC has added him to their Red to Blue list — meaning top priority–and the RNC has raised the SOS call for Bachmann and are ignoring other races in the state to bail her out.

So yes… Tinklenberg can win this. And this extra and unexpected unsolicited support must be overwhelming him with joy and gratitude. He’s a really, really nice guy by the way–humble and very smart. So have confidence that your hard earned and generously gifted money will make a difference to this race.

Honestly… I am overcome with joy and pride and love for all of you, who are helping rid the world of the Bachmann earth-scorching scourge.

It’s all about money for her. From ripping off Wasilla to scamming a free house, to god knows what other crimes she’s committed..

There is a silver lining though, as AKM mentioned.. The election crap will be over in 3 weeks and she’ll go home without 100’s of free lawyers to face all her bad behavior on her own. McGrumpy certainly won’t be paying for all the stuff that’s uncovered she’s done and who knows. Maybe she’ll end up sharing a prison cell with Teddy.. Our local CBS affiliate here in the DC area has started a no-spin newscast..

Starting this week, they will not report on any of the crap mcgrumpy and his minions spew and will only report on issues.

If all tv networks did that, they bullcrap they spew would be rendered worthless..

I like it.. Tonight, they discussed healthcare and explained the differences, fairly unbiased and honestly. I still like Obama’s plan better, but at least you could listen to someone explain them both without any spin.

Suggest your local TV stations try it.. It’s WUSA9.com if they want to look at contacting them about doing the same thing!

GOP seeks police, veterans to work Milwaukee polls

MADISON, Wis. – Democrats accused the Wisconsin Republican Party on Wednesday of trying to intimidate voters by seeking people with military and law enforcement experience to watch Milwaukee polls on Election Day.

[Andrea] Kaminski, of the League of Women Voters, said voters who want to avoid observers should cast their ballots early at clerk’s offices.

Deb, i agree, if McGrumpy could act like he did at that dinner, this would be a far better election season.

It’s just sad that as soon as it was over, he went back to spewing the same vile moosecrap he’s been selling for months..

Think about it His earliest ads were all obama, all the time. Obama, for his part almost never mentioned mcgrumpy.. comparison is sorta funny..

But i agree.. mcgrumpy had good timing and decent jokes.. obama tried, but didn’t hit many..

The other thing though.. Obama truly laughed and clapped.. mcgrumpy gave his pornosmile and his hands barely made a sound in those 2 clap pretends he did..

So, he didn’t like obama’s jokes.. it was obvious he was bothered. Obama just laughed and had a good time.

Ok… my first choice for a donation was and is mudflats because I’m convinced that the country and therewith the world would have never learned so much about Palin in such a timely manner if it hadn’t been for this blog, and I see Palin as a true and imminent threat to Alaska, the US, and the world. I can understand though that a snailmail addy isn’t wise for AKM to pass out (by now I’m thinking that I certainly wasn’t thinking at all to even ask for it, sheesh! Let’s blame that on cognitive dysfunction, please).

My second choice now is to support the elimination of Minnesota’s own Palin. Blood, sweat, tears, and a $5 check will go in the mail to Mr. Tinklenberg tomorrow :o)

(If anybody had told me 6 months ago that I’d ever in my whole life would make a donation to a political whatsis something-or-other, I’d have broken a rib laughing. This is momentous. Mudflats did it.)

Very alarming about the beluga wales. I moved to Washington State mainly because of the natural beauty and wildlife of the area. In the past 15 years, there has been more decline and more traffic. This is of national importance. We really need to protect our environment. Governor Gregiore is pushing through legislation to put a 20 cent fee on all plastic bags. The Republicans yell and say we should not be forced into conservation. I disagree. Not enough people care. There are some issue that need to be decided as a human species and as a committment to the earth. Not polluting is one of them. Protecting our wildlife is another. Palin is a Neanderthal and they died out. If anyone should become extinct, it should be people like her.

I was watching MSNBC when Michelle Bachman was interviewed earlier tonight by Chris Matthews – my blood pressure goes up just looking at her much less listening to the idiotic statements that come out of her mouth. She is so ignorant and not the type of person we want in congress. This summer the Minnesota Independence party decided to throw their support to Bachman’s Democratic opponent (Tinklenberg) to have a better shot at unseating her. Tinklenberg is very well liked. I think all the donations that Tinklenberg received tonight should be included in a TV commercial using some of Bachman’s statements.
After listening to Bachman, I went to a reception this evening for Franni Franken, Al Franken’s wife. It was at a house in my neighborhood and at least 40 women showed up to meet Franni and to discuss issues that are important in this election. Al Franken has a good chance to defeat Norm Coleman. I hope all the negative personal attacks backfire on the Republicans (Bachman, Coleman, and McCain) this election.

Ohio court today ruled that no private entity (namely the Republican Party) can question voter registrations. Only another govt. entity. Oh, Smack, GOP!

Ted Stevens took the stand today and basically blamed his wife for not paying the bills. What a guy!

I’ve enjoyed reading the conversation this evening. Too busy to post, catching up with all these donations, petitions, censures and what-nots. I’m so thrilled Tinklenberg has garnered so much money in protest of the evil one’s hateful diatribe.

I first became aware there was such a thing as politics because of Joe McCarthy. Despite the fact I was a Scottish child and therefore in no danger from the House UnAmerican Committee, I remember how scary the goings-on in the US seem to be, more especially since my ideas of America in the Fifties, formed by Hollywood, were of a happy happy land.

That same chilling fear returned tonight listening to Bachman. It’s comforting to know so many people have not just reacted in horror but acted in positive ways to censure and eventually remove her from office.

Let me put it this way, given the conditions and stress that the food fish exist in, in the fish farms (with some exceptions) I sure as hell won’t eat then, Like the fish many game depts raised for stocking purposes. Fish chow, greasy, stinking stuff. While it kept them alive and growing for maximum production per time unit, for the first month or so, when caught by “the avid tourist angler”, the fish (in this case trout) tasted just like the fish chow (Purina no less)f. It takes a while eating natural food (which I won’t detail here) for them to taste like a fish rather than dry dog food
Small ponds with a ecologically balanced species ratio do pretty well in comparison.
(Like catfish, bass, and bluegill) f you’d like more data on fish farming I’d be glad to send it, or post it to some upload site.

I was listening to the lunatic Bachmann live on MSNBC. I am so glad Chris Matthews gave her all that rope to hang herself. Part of me wanted him to refute what she was saying, but I knew it was more important for her to speak her(crazy) mind. You could really see that Matthews sensed this was a “historic” moment. The second-coming of Sen. Joe McCarthy in Congress.

Right afterward I had to jump in the car for a trip to Springfield. How thrilling to find that in the time of that drive – all that money raised for Tinklenberg!

I was pleased to make my donation, just now. Guess I’m an honorary MN citizen – I had already given to Al Franken last week.

Sometimes that, that gets draining,” she continued. “But it’s at events like these and our rallies that we are so energized and inspired and we know that we are not alone. We feel your strength and we feel the power of prayer, so many of you tell us that you are praying for us and praying for our country and that’s why we so appreciate you being here.”

Okay, first to the topic at hand….Palin and views on wildlife.

As soon as she was picked for VP I was bombarded w/ calls and emails because I am an outdoors woman, hunter (mainly game birds), wolf & wildlife conservationist for over a decade and volunteer for the IWC with friends and contacts living in Alaska. I have known about Palin since she stepped into the governor role and aerial hunting was back on the menu. Many joke about her being Bush in a skirt or Cheney w/ lipstick but seriously I wouldn’t bat an eyelash if she shared the views of crappy shot Dick and deemed the Endangered Species Act unconstitutional like he has stated in the past. Cheney was at the forefront of barring the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone being the rancher whore he is and Palin would be even more lethal with her glossy smile and snarky attitude behind feminine attributes that more Americans (male mostly) would accept than Cheney ever got away with. Look at the Department of the Interior, who holds the highest offices? and what they have gotten away with the past eight years. With Palin it would be an all out devastation.

Secondly I would like to restate that Michelle Bachmann, not of the Bachman family of the Olympic tragedy is one of the slimiest and weakest examples of women to hold public office. This race is tightening 42 /38 was the latest I heard but I have confidence that she’ll be crying over her mittens soon enough and this election I won’t be staying up to watch her give another brassy acceptance speech. Whatever donation you can manage for Tinklenberg would be greatly appreciated, heck it meant a weekend in for me but what really is the sacrifice when we have had to deal with the right wing nut floozy, Bushie groupie like Michelle Bachmann.

This is not just another endorsement folks it is pure golden ammo for each and every one of us. Read it, print it, keep extra copies with you muddies.

For those that “Don’t believe Barack has what it takes to be President” here is the newspaper that has been ALL OVER HIM since he got into the political scene here. Believe me, if anyone could DIG UP something, ANYTHING, on Barack it would have been the Trib.

Here is a teaser…

However this election turns out, it will dramatically advance America’s slow progress toward equality and inclusion. It took Abraham Lincoln’s extraordinary courage in the Civil War to get us here. It took an epic battle to secure women the right to vote. It took the perseverance of the civil rights movement…

Oh wait, one more… sorry
Having called Obama not ready to lead, McCain chose Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. His campaign has tried to stage-manage Palin’s exposure to the public. But it’s clear she is not prepared to step in at a moment’s notice and serve as president. McCain put his campaign before his country.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chi-chicago-tribune-endorsement,0,1371034.story

Oh damn, I needed every word of this today, after watching the aforementioned blood sucking republican perverts of democracy earlier, and being sick to my stomach from it, and than having to see them again as I puked them up into my… oh sorry, didn’t realize you were eating, my apologies.

I’m so tired of wherever Palin goes she says to the crowd, “You just get it.”

Almost wet my pants laughing when she called NH(?) part of the great north-west and then the big grin on her face when she said, “You just get it” and waited for the wild applause that didn’t come. No bingo!

I’ve been watching Maher since his HBO show started. He is kind of a brat, but, before I met Mudflats, his show and Keith O. were the only places I felt “at home and where I felt really important things were discussed – to my like mind.

Heres a whale story. Back many years ago when I was about 10 my dad and I were out fishing in a 10 foot open boat in the San Jaun Islands of Washington state. Suddenly about 30 feet away the water broke and up popped a killer whale, then next to it came a little one. They peered at us as though we were exibits in a zoo. I could almost hear the momma whale saying to the little one see, those are humans. We looked down in the water and there was on way down deep swimming under the boat, at that point my dad decided he wanted out of there fast. I was a kid and was to fascinated to be afraid, but I think they were aware of us and would not have endangered us.

Shikago..

The Wash Post announced a few days ago for obama.. Now the trib which was a truly inspiring endorsement. I don’t know any papers who announced for mcfailin and my guess is any who did may change their minds before 11/4..

If Colin Powell endorses Obama, then he’ll hit the trifecta.. and sail into the WhiteHouse i think.. He’ll get perhaps the most prominent and respected black man in the inner circle and a man who’s shown integrity even when Bush demanded he igore his principals. I think having lied to the UN troubled him more than we’ll ever know and perhaps he’s tired of the same old crap that McGrumpy and his stupid sidekick Idiot would bring to Washington.

Lets hope but we all gotta vote.

Deb,,, i really think Powell will come to the dark side and vote dem this year.. he’s smart, pragmatic and honorable. I think he is smart enough to see what we all have seen in Obama and will choose the only intelligent choice.

What scares me more than anything is how so many people in this country can’t see it and drink the koolaid. Powell was betrayed and lied to so many times, there is just no way he can vote McCain with a clear conscience.

My god. What the hell is going on? I watched Tina on Letterman, and she said she doesn’t know if she’s going to be on this weekend or not. I really think SNL will skewer Palin. At least, I hope they do.

Bachmann is not related to Bachman, the two people who were shot in China right before the Olympics. The latter are respected members of the community who are part of the Bachman Floral Company. The former is a crazy, gay-spying, bush-crouching, hypocritical “Christian” idiot who is an outrage to MN and to the country (as I said on the petition to censure her).

Ok. How about we send her with the Palins to Purgatory? That sounds about right to me. Y’all are right that MN doesn’t deserve her, either, just because one district was stupid enough (and red enough) to vote for her.

Go Elwyn! You da man! It’s time to kick out the riff-raff, Mudflatters, and thank you for helping clean my home state.

RE: SNL. You guys, SNL has been at this for years…trust that they will make it work. Watch. It’s OK to watch. They are providing a commentary on our times, with humor. But there is always a back story. They will not beatify Bible Spice. Watching in real time makes it a “happening” – the cosmic energy will be awesome!

Take a step back and see what AKM has led us to us create here…a microcosm of the beautiful, loving world Barack wants to build. So let’s do what we have been doing….accepting all points of view, debating the issues, loving our country, and above all, caring for what is best for each other.

I can’t wait to see the report and photos from the Pittsburgh MudStock! 🙂

Thanks for posting the link to the Chicago Tribune endorsement. You’re right, it’s very powerful, and it is exactly what I’ve been needing as a response to the people, (so many people!) who have figured out that McCain and Palin are wrong wrong wrong!!!, but for some reason they haven’t figured out yet that they have a choice!

I’ve been going back and forth on who Powell will endorse… but after thinking long and hard, it only makes sense that Obama will at least get the nod (if not an official endorsement).

One.. if he’s supporting McCain, I don’t believe he would come out on Meet The Press and say it loudly. I don’t believe he would want to hurt Obama at this point in the race.

Two.. as a strong Military Man, I can’t believe he could POSSIBLY support Palin being a ‘heart-beat away’ from Commander in Chief.

Three… Powell is a Moderate and I think he has a real dislike for the neocons and he must be abhorred by the attacks and dirty play coming from the McCain campaign.

Four… this article about the timing of his endorsement really makes sense.

Someone mentioned dying trees in New Jersey. I think you are probably right, here is what I know from the other side of the country. While I believe we are contributing heavily to global warming I am also aware based on fossils that the area where I live was once much warmer than it is now. I base this on fossil evidence, I have a counter top made of slices of a petrified palm tree that a friend of mine found buried on his land while he was excavating to build his house, apparently they are very common in this area not far from the Canadian boarder.
I have seen a number of trees tyoes dying off on my land near a river in southern puget sound. mainly it has been hemlock which has a semi shallow root system but requires alot of water. I have come to believe the water table is dropping, while we still get lots of rain it is also getting warmer so more water evaporates. I have been kicking around the PNW for over 40 years the difference is noticable when I was in my teens it was unheard of for tempetures to hit 90 now it happens often, in fact we have plenty of days over 100. On the family farm is a pond where my 88 year old mother skated every winter when she was young, in my life time it has frozen over twice. The world has been heating up for awhile now.
Perhaps the most interesting thing i have seen is an ancient city off the coast of southern Mexico that, at it’s shallowest is under 40 feet of water, that is how far the sea has risen since this city was built around 2500 years ago.
I am not sure there is anything we can do to stop it, anyone who has ever been in an earthquake knows when the earth decides to do something it does it. Much as fleas have no control over the dog they live on we have very little contol over our hostess. We may be able to slow things down a bit by cleaning up our environment but in my opinion that horse has done left the barn.

Chuck Baldwin. Read all about him at http://www.baldwin08.com
Interestingly enough he graduated from Liberty Bible Institute at Liberty University. Since he earned his Bachelor and Master Degrees in Theology, from Christian bible College, Chuck has received two honorary Doctorate Degrees. He was also past chair of the Florida Moral Majority.

And then, there is the Libertarian ticket, Bob Barr for Prez and Wayne Allyn Root for VP. And Wayne’s kids are named Dakota, Hudson, Remington, and Contessa. I am not even joking. Check it out at http://www.rootforamerica.com

To a degree I can understand people’s desires to use the Earth’s natural resources. Especially when you see the developing countries being lectured by the developed West. After all we’ve used all of ours and made our economy strong in doing so. Now we sit here and lecture developing countries for doing the same thing so you can see why they would think of us as hypocrites. Sort of like we had our but you can’t have yours.

This goes along with Alaska’s desire to use their natural resources to make themselves a better state and then to have the Lower 48 put up hurdle after hurdle must upset them tremendously.

I guess though that we’ve learned from our mistakes and are trying to make retributions by stopping the mining practices that cause enviromental disasters or protect the animals that are rapidly becoming extinct. Still perhaps we need to make monetary exchanges to developing countries to keep them from doing what we did, to help them become properous without killing the environment. Worth looking at I suppose.

The health of the animal population is a way to determine how our planet is doing. With animals becoming extinct and vast portions of forest dying Earth is trying to tell us that something is wrong, that it is sick. It’s time we start to listen for the sake of the children and grandchildren out there or they won’t be able to save her no matter what they do.

I wish the whales, moose, polar bears, and wolves the best of luck. You deserve your part of this planet and if we don’t help them the world will be the worse for it.

thanks Ira2 for the translation — that is funny when you think about it, makes it easier to watch her when you can snicker about her name…

On a bright note, everyone, daughter & I stopped by Side Street Espresso & donated $$ on behalf of Mudflatters around the world. They’re giving the money to Obama, yay! On the walk to the shop I was thinking that it seems like a million years since we were all on the edge of our seats waiting for the Branchflower report to be released. I simply cannot believe that it has only been a week. I really really can’t wait for this election to be over. Voting early next Monday!

I cannot take credit for Bible Spice — it was a name given by someone on a comment string on an article that I read somewhere at some time in the past, can’t remember. Loved it & adopted it to take home & treasure & shared it with you all…

And finally, Deb — I am right there with you. I cannot believe that SNL is giving her any credibility by having her on their show. I consider it an implied endorsement of her hate-mongering! NOT because I think that the left-leaning SNL people really believe her lies or support them, but because their having her on their show gives all of her lies & hate-mongering weight that it should not have. I will never ever ever watch SNL again — except my best of 2006-07 dvd that has the uncensored Dick in a Box. If you haven’t yet seen that one then you need to watch it quick, THEN boycott them. I am with you, I am supporting you, and we will find fine new shows to take SNL’s place in our hearts! Besides Tina Fey, nobody can live up to the stuff that we got to see so many years ago — Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dana Carvey, etc. etc. Dick in a Box is the only skit they’ve shown for years & years & years that made me cry laughing, the new Bible Spice spoofs can’t touch it. You will really appreciate it if A) you’ve ever had a guy in your life that thought he was God’s gift, and B) if you have a teen that subjects you to Justin Timberlake often.

One more and then it’s off to sleep for me.
My opinion Colin Powell will endorse Obama, regardless of what the right wing nut jobs want everyone to believe Barrack Obama has shown he is a righteous guy with intergrity just like Powell. The right wing nut jobs will try to belittle Powell for it , but they would belittle Jesus himself if they thought he was leaning toward Obama. I can’t help but thinking we are seeing a case of national synchronicity, I mean how likely would it be for our first serious multiracial contendor for president to accept his nomination on the anniversery of MLKs most famous speech. He came from no where, I had never even heard of Barrack Obama a year ago, no one knew he would win the primary it could not possibly have been planned that way. Then we have watched as everything the republicans have tried to pull has blown up squarely in thier faces. While I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch seems to me like this might just be one of those meant to be things.

As for Saturday Night Live, I am actually suprised Sarah would even consider going on there. Wouldn’t think it would be the evangelical cup of tea, in fact it would seem more like the thing they are always railing against as sign that we are all turning into amoral brain less tools of satan. 🙂 I doubt Sarah will come out of it unscathed, but I imagine the she will barely notice she has been barbequed she isn’t exactly a rocket scientist afterall.

It must be nice to have a governor that gets stupider by measurable amounts each day.”

It would be even nicer if she got smaller as she did it, and then just faded away before election day. Unfortunately with the Pinocchio factor her nose would keep growing and end up like the Far Side cartoon about the revenge of Dr. Somebody’s (I forget the name) nose. It’s an interesting image though something like the SNL debate skit with the three inch tall “Joe the Plumber.”
On another random thought, It’s interesting that McCain is so fascinated with plumbers, first G. Gordon Liddy and then Joe. Maybe he’s hoping Joe can steal the election for him the same way Nixon’s plumbers did for Nixon.

Oh! I’m so rusty after so many years out of the old country! It just registered that Pfotenhauer can actually be translated as “pawchopper” and not just pawslapper. A Holzhauer is one who chops wood, therefore a Pfotenhauer is one who chops paws. Good grief, she’s even named to be Palin’s right hand Nazi what with the wolf paw issue!!

What next? It is so plain that Palin has no regard for any wildlife unless it’s mounted on a wall of thrown over the back of a sofa. I love watching the belugas at the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma, Washington. But I would much rather people continue having the close interaction with them in the wild. They are some of God’s special and very beautiful creatures. It’s a shame that Palin has no appreciation for them.

I just read the last thread, and congrats to everyone for completely ignoring the troll. Well done.

Also, I want to reiterate that MN is really a blue state, no, really, it is. District 6 (Bachmann’s district) just happens to be one of the more conservative ones. Oh, all right, it’s been purple for the last several years, but I have high hopes it will go blue again.

I agree with…sorry, I don’t remember who said it on the previous thread, but whomever stated that McCain should denounce what Bachmann said on “Hardball”. It is, by far, one of the most offensive things said by a pol this election season.

Come on, Elwyn Tinklenberg! You can do it!

Off topic thought before going to bed:

I went to Goodwill today for my annual $40 winter clothing shopping trip. The Bemidji Goodwill store is fairly small compared to big-city stores, but they still have a huge selection of nice clothes. Once again, I was struck by how many of the outfits look like they’d been worn only once, if that – some have the original store tabs still attached! – and I couldn’t shake the thought that much of the clothing that people donate was probably bought with credit cards and isn’t even paid off yet. If it was cheap stuff from Walmart or something, it’d be easier to understand, maybe, but these are fancy brand-name clothes. When you wander around in a Goodwill store and see all the donated/discarded goodies there, it’s hard to believe that we’re in deep financial trouble these days. It’s a somewhat shocking reminder of how far off track we’ve gone in our ideas of what’s “normal”.

I’m too tired to think it through, but it seems that there might be a relation between this and other off-the-tracks ideas that we don’t really see as off-the-track because we’ve been conditioned (and have conditioned ourselves) to find it normal. Maybe that’s why this election is so electrifying… we got shocking intelligence and reason on one side, and shocking retro 50s idiocy on the other side. It sure shakes up “normal”, doesn’t it.

Btw, I made out like a bandit :o) It’s amazing what $40 can buy even in an overpriced thrift store like Goodwill :o)

Ah, yes, another species for Sarah to discount. If it wasn’t for the “unborn” I seriously doubt R’s would like anyone or thing except themselves.

ira2, I know what you mean about people who shop for “sport,” I’ve been known to do it myself, albeit with cash. However, sometimes there is a “good” reason for all those unworn duds. When Grandma passed, we found a bunch of stuff in her closet with tags still on. She’d been planning a long cruise. Goodwill/Salvation Army made out.

I hope I haven’t caused trouble for mudflats..I just posted the url, in the comments section of the Bangor Daily News.
There are several appallingly IGNORANT, regular posters there who spew forth R LImbaugh filth. If the paper is reporting truthfully ( they are pretty neutral) 5,000 turned out to see palin in Bangor.
Even after Susan Collins, ( who has been joined at the hip with Bush & Lieberman for the last 6 years…) requested the mccain campaign to remove the Ayers/Obama robo calls from our state, and they love her and will probably vote her back in…….they have swallowed the LIMBAUGH KOOLAIDE ABOUT BILL AYERS! Get this! All our troubles ( financial meltdown) are because the Democrats have been running Congress for the last 2 years!
We have 4 electoral votes. If enough stoopids, here in the 2nd district, vote mccain/palin ( & the yard signs are starting to sprout) 2 of those 4 votes will go to m/p not Obama.
I had a neighbor a few years back……she was part Native American, had worked on the Alaska pipeline, and was substitute teaching in our local school system. SHe used to complain bitterly about the “inbreed-enss” ( sp?) of the locals………
One day she met someone from NJ online, picked up, left her husband and 13 year old son, and has never looked back!

First I want to thank AKM for doing the piece on the whales. When I heard that SWWNBN disputed “the scientific evidence” on the status of the whales, I almost drove the car into a ditch. What an stupid, stupid, stupid person she is.

To witsendnj (16:18:31) :

The trees in NJ are not dying and we are not in a drought situation.

The needles of white pine, spruce and hemlock normally turn brown at this time of the year and drop off. Sometimes here at my place, with the wind blowing, it can look like it is raining pine needles.

When trees lose their leaves, leaf drop starts from the crown and moves down. With some trees, such a sycamores and buckeyes, the leaves don’t get much color at all. The leaves just turn dry and brown and fall off, early in the season. That is all perfectly normal.

Ash trees and black locust also lose their leaves very early.

So, no, the trees in NJ are not dying and we are not in a drought.

In all the back & forth about SP on SNL, I haven’t seen this point brought up– what if SNL said no? Are you kidding me? That would be such fuel for the rightwingnuts to excoriate it as a discriminatory coastal elite blah blah blah… this way they get around it and don’t lose any of the largely bipartisan Tina Fey love. It really is damned if you do, damned if you don’t with the unhinged GOP these days. Mind you, I don’t want to watch SP on SNL either, but as a few other folks have said, there’s a good chance it good go really badly (which is what I’m rooting for!)

Thanks for all the Bachmann info above… I used to live in MN before its dreadful lurch rightward, and am thrilled that she has quite possibly just been hoisted by her own petard, in a seat that was otherwise supposed to be safe. Fingers crossed the payback will come Nov 4!

Fedupnj & Susie in NJ……….I used to live onthe edge of the Pine Barrens. When I came to coastal, Downeast Maine 17 years ago, NJ was already exeriencing, 4 FULL months of summer weather. And I remember from my childhood in the 40’s, ice skating for a good portion of the winter…..enough snow to be given skis for Christmas……… later in the early 70’s I tried to take my kids skiing one day; we wound up renting horses because it was too warm to even keep the manufactured snow from melting!
In the 60’s, 70’s my parents lived in Albany, NY. I remember the dire condition of the trees along the NY Thruway, and the Garden State Parkway, yellowing browning leaves, conifers as well. Earth Day happened along with a major effort to reduce the acid rain…………..It worked, the trees survived, looked healthy again…..BUT we have just endured 8 years of Bush’s disastrous pandering to the BIG polluters. I watched ( on cspan) the Kyoto Treaty meeting in the spring of 2001, BEFORE 9/11 even happened. WE DIDN”T SIGN,,, THE TREATY and a lot of countries were pretty peeved with us.,
Yes my trees on the coast of Maine look pretty sickly too……………I have Hemlock wooley adalged on my 2 hemlock trees……………..which are killing them ( unless the Safer soap works) and something really weird devouring the cones on my beautiful little spruce tree I dug up and brought home about 14 years ago! I have to drag a ladder out teeter on the slope and take a photo for the co-operative extension……
The choke cherry trees just look sick, limp yellowish spotty leaves……….and a black fungus. It wasn’t like this 17 years when I first moved here……………..
( I am a landsape painter……….critically observant!)
fedupnj; have you gone to the New Brunswick Rutgers Campus with questions? They had a wonderful collection of exotic trees there last time I looked, 1983, they would know. I see Oldwicke is not too far from there.

I think I know your property. Have you had someone from either URWA, as you’re in their watershed, or NJCF, as you’re also in the Black River Greenway, come in to look at your trees and make suggestions as to how to manage them?

Also, if you need to take the black walnut trees down the wood might sell for more than what it cost to remove the tree.

McCain’s association with Liddy isn’t news. The Chicago Tribune covered it back in May, when the Clinton campaign was roadtesting the McCain campaign’s tactics. Let’s compare:

* Bill Ayers participated in bombing a statue, the New York Police headquarters, the U.S. Capitol, and the Pentagon. G. Gordon Liddy participated in a White house plot to subvert the Constitution.
* Ayers has never been convicted or served prison time. Liddy was convicted of conspiracy, burglary, and illegal wire-tapping, was senteced to 20 years, and served 5.5 until President Carter commuted his sentence.
* Ayers is now a professor of education. Liddy is a conservative talk radio host.
* Ayers has said “we didn’t do enough” to stop the Vietnam War, a statement interpreted by some to mean he thinks he should have set off more bombs in the early 1970s. In 1994, after the feds stormed the branch Davidian compound in Waco, Liddy said on his radio program, [sorry, rough language coming] “Now if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you and they are bearing arms, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot; they’re going to be wearing bulletproof vests. … Kill the sons of bitches.” (And as for Liddy on Hitler….)
* Ayers and his wife hosted a campaign event at his house for Obama in 1995. Liddy hosted a campaign event for McCain in 1998.
* Ayers donated $200 to Obama in 2001. Liddy has given at least $5,000 to McCain over the years, including $1,000 this year.
* Senator Obama has called Ayers’ terrorist acts “despicable” and condemned them. Senator McCain appeared on Liddy’s radio show last November and said, “I’m proud of you, I’m proud of your family…. It’s always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.”

I’m not going to bother with quantifying the sins of Ayers and Liddy. And please note, I offer no defense of Ayers here. Go ahead, assume the worst of both men, and you can say, as does Chapman, that each man “back in the 1970s, extolled violence and committed crimes in the name of a radical ideology — and… has never shown remorse or admitted error.”

It’s simple: if you think Ayers is a voting issue, then you must think Liddy is a voting issue. Have fun voting for Barr or Nader.

I was lucky enough to spend 3 weeks in Anchorage in the early ’90’s, and one evening I drove down the Seward Hwy and saw the pods of belugas in the inlet. Pretty magical evening – there were Dall’s sheep in the roadway, and on the other side were the belugas. I couldn’t believe they were whales, just looked like huge numbers of big white rocks out in the water. Wish I’d known about a place to see them closer.

Then I had a wonderful interaction with one of the belugas at the Vancouver Aquarium in BC – it was pouring rain, but I’d gone outside to see the pool. He kept sticking his head out and whistling at me, nodding his head at me. Then when I went inside, he dove down and kept swimming by the window where I was standing. Gorgeous, incredible animal. This woman must be stopped on her quest to get rid of everything worthwhile on the planet.

The bottom line: five plaintiffs are saving the beluga and they could no doubt use some donations to help this and other work. They certainly deserve everyone’s thanks.

So, I see I’m coming in a little late on this one, but I have forced myself to stomach Bachmann’s comments, and given an analysis on how they are exactly the kinds of comments and tactics McCarthy used (ESPECIALLY when she calls out college professors, and asks for investigations of US Congress-people for their possible “anti-American” sentiments) over at my blog. It’s the top post, just click my name to get over there. Also, there is a petition going around to request Congress censure this disgustingly vitriolic representative, so that even those of us who are too poor at current to donate can at least do something. http://www.censurebachmann.com

Yo AkMuck,
Hunting was not banned… to state that Alaska Native subsistence hunting of CI beluga was banned is a total slap in the face of all the work conducted by hunters.

Ted Stevens put a moritorium on hunting till the NMFS and hunters gather and work out a co management agreement. (check out the 1994 amendments to the MMPA for what a co management agreement is …)

NMFS administration is not for co management agreements, never have been. Alaska Natives in the CI region wanted a comanagment agreement, yet the willywally of NMFS halted the process. However NMFS did NOT have a problem funding fuel and going along on beluga hunting trips to get biosamples for research. NMFS also had decided to not fund population research till hunters told them there is a serious diminishment of the numbers. So what did NMFS do? Decided to up the funding for fuel and helicopters to get more biosamples from hunters.

HUNTING WAS NOT BANNED.

Look the MMPA, ESA and marine mammal subsistence hunting by Alaska Natives is totally complicated, only because everyone has a opinion and a way it is supposed to be managed. And my opinion is that if the federal gov managers would just do their jobs as manadated under the MMPA and ESA, we wouldn’t have clueless blog writers stating that hunting was banned.
