Palin Throws Alaska Under the Bus.

17 09 2008

GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is effectively turning over questions about her record as Alaska’s governor to John McCain’s political campaign, part of an ambitious Republican strategy to limit embarrassing disclosures and carefully shape her image for voters in the rest of the country.

That’s the lead in from the Anchorage Daily News story about the latest GOP strong-arm tactics to perform what many Alaskans feel is an outside political takeover of the state’s Troopergate investigation.  A pack of high-powered east coast lawyers are the new artisans of the Palin “image”.  If anyone has a question about Palin’s 20 months as governor, ask the McCain campaign, because apparently no one else can give you  the answers.

This is not going over well in Alaska.  I’ll use my usual caveat that there are lots of Alaskans who happily subscribe to the “Sarah right or wrong” mentality, and will continue to do so.  However, the progressive take on this whole latest mess is only slightly short of taking torches and pitchforks and surrounding the Attorney General’s office, demanding an end to the stonewalling.  I’ve watched Alaskan progressives that I personally know go from saying, “Wow! I can’t believe I voted for a Republican!” to, “She’s doing OK.  I don’t agree with everything, but I don’t regret my vote” to being so furiously seething angry they just can’t say anything.

This means that there’s a shift, and shifts tend to bring along all people to a certain degree.  If there’s one way to tick off Alaskans it’s by bringing in ‘outsiders’ to try to control state affairs.  Imagine if you will how a small independant nation would feel being invaded by the superpower next door.  It’s like that.

I’ve even lived to see the day that Republican State Senate President Lyda Green (often vilified by Democrats over the years) agreed to do an interview on the local progressive talk radio station, and was practically hailed as a hero.  Why?  For simply stating the investigation should and will move forward despite the fact that the Attorney General, under the influence of McCain lawyers, said that state employees would defy their subpoenas. “Nothing has changed,” she said. “Our job is to find the truth.”  Real integrity coming from either side of the aisle is what Alaskans want.  It’s in desperately short supply these days.

And again, and again, I hear Alaskans quoting that now infamous promise of our governor (who is still our governor by the way) to run the state with “ethical, open and transparent” government.

It remains to be seen how effective the so-called “Truth Squad” is in ‘shaping her image’ in the rest of the country, but they are not doing her any favors here at home.  I’ve never heard so many people say they can’t wait to see her new approval ratings.

Meanwhile, the opposing side, not to be outdone by a goofy name, has come up with  “Alaska Mythbusters,” a nod to the popular television show. This white hat version of the Orwellian “Truth Squad”  is made up mostly of elected officials who have opposed or know Palin and who criticize her work.

So what does the Attorney General Talis Colberg have to say for himself?  I know a couple people who know Colberg, and respected him deeply until recently.  I heard from a friend of his that this whole thing is really taking a toll on him. “He’s really a decent guy,” says my bewildered friend. So, what say you sir?  Hello?  Are you there?

Oh.  Talis Colberg just went “on vacation” to Kansas.  You can’t make this stuff up.

Beware of tornadoes, falling houses, and flying monkeys!  Nothing would surprise me any more.

As always, LOVE it, mudflats! Having lived in Alaska for a number of years back in the 70s, I can understand how Alaskans might get a LITTLE upset about “outsiders” messing with your state!
Thanks for being here for all of us!

She doesn’t need Alaska anymore, and now that it is obvious she won’t be getting the Female Vote she doesn’t need them anymore, either.

I read about you in newsweek. I lived in Alaska for a year, and Palin spoke at a few army functions (I’m an army wife) and aggravated me to no end when she spoke about our troops “ultimate sacrifice” in Iraq combatting the “terrorists who killed thousands of innocent Americans on 9/11”. I got so angry that she was peddling the same old tripe, and I was SPEECHLESS when I saw her get nominated. THANK YOU for keepin’ it real. This is refreshing.

BTW, I can’t wait to see her new approval ratings, either. Any idea when someone will take that poll?

I have to second not just Deb but everyone else who has complimented your work on all this. You’re a better source for Troopergate than anyone in the Lower 48. Thank you, ma’am.

So: seeing as these subpoenas have been issued by a committee appointed by the legislature, don’t they have the same force as a court summons would? Will this matter go before a judge?

And: The AG has said no state employees would answer the summonses; Todd Palin, though, isn’t a state employee (unless “First Dude” is a paying position)–so, what’s his status in all this?
My guess is that they’ll claim spousal privilege for Todd. However, Murlene Wilkes, who is rumored to have denied a workers comp claim filed by Mike Wooten at the request of the governor is another story. Wilkes denied it, but a conscientious employee called the “tip line” and said that she was in the office and knew different. The plot thickens… AKM

so, if Sarah plain and tall doesn’t become the next VP, will Alaskans support her tenure as governor?

You don’t wish to be unemployed! I’ve been looking for a job for 9 months and the economic news and the Palin news has me crying almost everyday. If gas prices weren’t so high, I would consider going to Alaska to join the protests!

I went from a good paying job to unemployment (which is about to run out) to looking for jobs that only pay minimum wage–because that’s all that are out there these days.
_____

Tell me about it.

I been laid off for more than 18 months now. My wife just got a job, after being laid off 10 months.

She had to move to California, though (our home is in Vegas). Wrote about it on my blog:

Yeah, I’m on extended unemployment, which runs out mid-October. At least Cheryl found a job, so we can at least tread water ’til whenever.

But, hey, the economy is “fundamentally strong.” At least from the perspective of a beer heiress and her otherwise ward-of-the-state gigolo.

We need a REVOLUTION HERE IN ALASKA. If she does not comply with open INVESTIGATION I am willing to picket or whatever. I am down in Soldotna, AK. THIS IS COMPLETELY NONSENSE and we need to find out our constitutional rights and go door knocking to every citizen in AK to get the ball rolling. I am a mother of four kids and go to school p/t, but this won’t deter me. My hubby works up on the slope most of the time. Palin’s actual rating is 64% and that’s before any new polling comes out. But nationally her ratings, approval, and competence for the job is tumbling fast (Diageo, CBS/NYTimes, Research 2000 polls).

Palin, McCain and the Republican bounce are all toast now.

Obama’s increasing in the national polls, and is already bumping up in the state polls, which usually are a week behind.

McCain is tied in Fla now, down in Ohio, down in Virgina, down 5 nationally and down 8 in New Mexico now.

Wow. It’s suprising what “real issues” can do to the campaign.

I just watched the interview with the “first dude” on youtube. It is revealing to read the responses to the video. I agree he comes across as a simple, even likable character. This is how most people comment: “what a great family”, “good guy and family”, ” I would trust them the keys of my house – I would not trust Obama with the keys” etc. It looks to me that far too many people judge the race by “would have a beer with them”. I have seen this today at work. The sad thing you cannot even change their minds. I just wonder whether it is racism on some subconscious level.

It’s heartening to see the polls go back up, but what I find even more encouraging is that the Obama campaign staff do not seem to be affected by the peaks and valleys of the numbers. They are totally focused on voter registration and voter contact. They have a truly impressive organization going here in Northern Virginia. I showed up to canvass last weekend in Alexandria and there were more than 50 volunteers for the first shift! We are really working hard to put Virginia in the blue column for the first time in over 40 years, and the addition of Palin to the ticket has only made us DC area Dems all the more motivated.

Keep up the fantastic work, AKMuckraker! It’s been great to see this blog getting so much national attention!

Talis Colberg just went ”on vacation” to Kansas? On vacation?

He’s third in line for Governor. Both the Gov and lieutenant Governor are tied up in elections. He’s in the midst of the biggest investigation of his life. The Governor of his state is running for VP of the US and is being investigated for abuse of power. And he goes on vacation? That’s really priceless.

Has he been seen or is he taking swimming lessons with Jimmy Hoffa?

Glenn2008 – “I just wonder whether it is racism on some subconscious level.”

Yes.

We’re not hearing people say “I won’t vote for him because he’s black.” They’re saying something else instead. We need to listen for the lame excuses, and infer some other motive.

I didn’t “get” Obama at first, and I’m not 100% on his positions, but he’s dignified, and had brought that dignity to the election. McCain is a blubbering embarrassment.

Drink a beer with him? heck I’d even buy it!

Granted I didn’t see too much state affairs, but in the small village of 90 locals I was at, I can attest to the distrust and dislike of outsiders. The moment people decided I was OK, I could feel it. The moment I watched them not accept someone else was quite unmistakable.

1. no economic plan and unlikely to reform (134 lobbyist on his side)

4. but most importantly: MORE WARS !!!

Asked for “specific skills” she could cite to rebut critics who question her grasp of international affairs, she replied, “I am prepared.”

AKMuckraker expressed the feelings of Alaskans very well, but if I may I would like to pound the point home with just a little more force.

You see as a rule Alaskans are just not that crazy about ANYBODY telling them what to think, what to do, or how they should solve their problems.

Even Republicans who may have been very excited to have one of their own on the national ticket are starting to think that Sarah Palin left the screen door open and let all of the pests get in.

The independence that runs through our veins is boiling at the very thought that a bunch of “f**king outsiders” would dare to come up here and stick their pointy noses in our business.

Before we identify ourselves as conservative or liberal, Republican or Democrat, we identify ourselves as “Alaskans”. And we are about to teach these buzzards from the lower 48 that they have bitten of much more then they can chew.

I’ll hold the torch. You get the pitchfork! 🙂 AKM

How Palin Makes Appointments

Sarah Palin just made her gubernatorial appointments to the Alaska Marine Transportation Board–the Board that provides advice on the state’s public transportation ferries–the Alaska Marine Highway.

Her appointment from Haines, the community in which I live, is Robert Venables. Venables has supported roads and mines, not fuel-efficient ferries. In fact, over the objections of most people in Haines, Venables lobbied for a “fast-ferry” that endangers sea-life, burns excessive fuel, costs citizens more to ride, and is unreliable in bad weather. Venables has lobbied and helped Juneau lobby for a road from Juneau to the Kensington Mine in the Upper Lynn Canal, rather than for a renewed commitment to Alaska Marine Highway Service from Haines to Auke Bay, in Juneau. This way the State pays for the road to the mine, rather than the mine, which also is moving ahead with its operations with Palin’s sanction without proper permits being in place for clean water, etc. Our Borough Assembly fired Robert Venables as our Borough Manager a few months ago as he has been less than forthcoming and open with citizens and his own Borough Assembly. But he is a solid Republican and who supports roads and mining–so that’s who Palin appointed to her Marine Transportation Board.

I’m really curious as to how the “outsiders” coming into Alaska is going to affect the general election. It seems that quite a few Republicans aren’t overly pleased with Gov. Palin. Will this carry over to the general population?
Alaska is expected to go for McCain/Palin. Could they be shooting themselves in the foot by sending in all these “big guns” to basically save her from herself?
Perhaps I’m just being too hopeful, but wouldn’t that be a hoot if the people of her home state were to revolt and vote against her on Nov 4th.

Holy Cow! An amazing and very powerful video indeed. And the music in combination with the pictures and the narration were so dramatic and intense. I loved what Gen. Nothing will surprise you anymore? How did this surprise you in the first place? I don’t mean to throw off on Alaska; my parents lived there 4 years, I have friends now from Alaska. Sarah Palin is the VP candidate, and her “image crisis” could make or break McCain’s chance at the White House. The GOP is looking to make any problems in Alaska disappear, so they can focus on getting McCain/Palin elected in November. It shouldn’t come as a shock. The population density in Alaska was less than 1per square mile last time I checked. Okay, one guy got fired that shouldn’t have, she probably is quilty of abusing her power. Yes, she’s still your governor. Do you want her in the White House? She could be the next president (after McCain). I politely suggest you quit squacking and get on the boat. Forget governing Alaska, we have bigger fish to fry. If she wasn’t suddenly thrust into the national spotlight, there would never have been a “troopergate” cause no one no where would even care.

I am firmly of the conviction that when Obama is elected, Alaska needs to be declared a “disaster zone” – due to Typhoon (buffoon?) Sarah. You have every right to claim a hardship here!

As for how SP is playing in the lower 48. I’m in a battleground state. I went for a haircut this afternoon. And one young woman (hairdresser) gave me an elaborate pantomime of an experience she had Friday night. Her friend has just parked the car and she was halfway out of it onto the sidewalk… when 3 women nearby turned and one of them said: “You look just like Sarah Palin!” Whereupon the hairdresser demonstrated how she grimaced and bent over as if to throw up. Clearly she had told this story multiple times since Friday night. And the 3 women? They thought it was funny too!

I think this lady is going to have to spend the rest of her life – hiding from the press. Tonya Harding… move over!

Earlier this year in NY, our illustrious governor went down in flames. One day there’s a scandal – less than a week later, he resigned. OK, that was sex, and nothing hits the fan like that, but maybe you Alaskans won’t need to impeach Sarah if she continues to self-destruct.

AKM, had to listen to Talk of the Nation to hear what they were saying. If you’ve made it to NPR, there’s no stopping you!

BTW, any recent polls on Ted Stevens and Don Young? I was afraid adding SP to the ticket might doom the Dems chances in those races, but if she’s dropping in the polls, maybe she’ll take them w/ her.

Thank you for that report. It is information like this that helps us understand her mentality. People do not change as the fractal of their original life pattern expands. The key patterns are all there. She is a loyalty freak. Not a good thing to be. Not good at all. The only thing I knew about her on P Day was that I had seen the piece on 60 Minutes some months earlier. In that piece I saw her as an amicable but vapidly one dimensional person who has never really been challenged in love to her core. If you have lived long enough you know to never, never, never put some one in charge of human lives and great fortunes unless they have bitterly failed at something in life or been dealt a very tough hand in life and have leaned from it and overcame it. Look at what happened to this nation under a clueless idiot like GWB with no real life skills.

The Greeks were right and history proves it with relentless fury: character is fate.

I’ll be ready. I have that confidence. I have that readiness and if you want specifics with specific policy or countries, go ahead. You can ask me. You can play stump the candidate if you want to. While I am thrilled that Obama is rising in the polls, I feel quite uneasy. The American public has a short attention span. All it would take is one major foreign relations crisis, terrorist attack or something of the kind for the momentum to shift back to McCain, he who is perceived as being vastly superior in that area, along with his VP who can see Russia and lives next to Canada.

The Republicans know that quite well. They are not above creating a crisis of their own if need be. They are playing to win at this point. Don’t be surprised at anything they do.

Governor Palin seems to have all of Alaska and the netroots po’d. Ain’t pretty, I don’t know which one is worse. Both together, well…

This week is an absolute disgrace…this is what happens when you let people who hate/don’t believe in/want to end the government run the government: it’s just a big giveaway to corporate clients, hedge funders, mercenaries, defense contractors, etc. etc. etc. All at the expense of the taxpayers and their life savings. Next up: watch your mutual funds go poof! Thank god we still have (some) social security money, although they tried to take that, too.

It IS the economy, stupid.

Nobody in their right mind ‘vacations’ in Kansas…you can’t make this stuff up!

Sad thing is, if you run roughshod over your homeplace, people tend to remember it. Gov. Palin loves Alaska, I wonder if she realizes what this might do to her and her family?

@Amused and Bewidered – Thanks for the link to the Town Hall.

Apparently her answers were so good that a Palin spokesperson later had to address Palin’s specific foreign policy credentials, including:

“She is Governor of the only state with two international borders – a land border with Canada and a maritime border with Russia.”

Well, I was skeptical when she said being able to see Russia could be considered foreign policy experience – but wow! – she can see Canada, too. Now I’m convinced.

Unfortuately, the report goes on to say: “Earlier at the town hall meeting, a woman rose to speak and said was a Democrat who previously supported Hillary Clinton but now backed the Republican ticket.”

That’s scary. None of the Hillary supporters I know feel that way, but I worry a little about swing states – esp. the ones Hillary carried, like OH and PA. We need to send those Hillary supporters to this blog!

“Give us some details and examples of your strategies and plan for economic empowerment for women,” she said.

McCain signaled for Palin to answer the question.

“Well first let me take a shot at that, and I’ll tell ya, I’m a product of Title IX in our schools, where equal education and equal opportunities in sports really helped propel me into the—I guess into the position that I’m in today where,” Palin said.

McCain then interjected, “Could I mention she was a point guard on a state championship basketball team.”

You can’t wait for the new polls…. Why wait – why not contact one of your university Statistics departments or one of the local news organizations to conduct a poll. The challenge is that the McCain campaign is likely to produce or impact the next poll you see – and you’ll not know what that means. Maybe the Alaskans would like to see a poll conducted by Alaskans. I’m sure you know that the way you question people and the way you count your data makes a lot of difference in the “Outcome” of the polls. If one were to atch the daily polls, they would think people are changing their mind every other day. In fact, you identified reality – things start to change…. People do not change their mind every day – they change gradually over time..

Well said, HamletsMill.

I’m phone banking this weekend at someone’s house through MoveOn. I’ve been reading voraciously and trying to follow all the links that all you terrific people provide. I’ve made notes, researched and paid attention…I’m ready! I hope I can knock someone off the fence to our side. I really, really hope…
—————————–
Thank you MinNJ.

I meant to write “In that piece I saw her as an amicable but vapidly one dimensional person who has never really been challenged in LIFE to her core.” But I wrote in maybe a Freudian typo “In that piece I saw her as an amicable but vapidly one dimensional person who has never really been challenged in LOVE to her core.”

As I caught my typo after posting, I thought maybe LOVE is more profound a word here. This soul cannot love. She is loveless. I absolutely cannot stand people who are needlessly adversarial in life. They are incredibly destructive to themselves to everyone around them including … entire nations. Yes. Sometimes you have to be adversarial to stand for justice in some situations in life when completely necessary. But a pit bull adversary stance to everything when you get up in the morning each day is delusional mental illness. There is no grace in the Universe with that stance. Ever. Is this a generational thing? Are there mass “forty somethings” out there this profoundly one dimensional in life? I don’t know?

Change of topic – since you are from NJ – I just have to give you this link. I gave it to our beloved AKM after she had to endure the unholy use of “Born to Run” at the Alaska Empty Palin Fest that day. Maybe this version will put it all back into an NJ perspective!

Maybe play this for breaks at your phone banking!

Does it scare anyone else that our embassy in Yemen was attacked earlier today? Now that the U.S. is showing such weakness, it seems there will be more attacks. I have lived with Sen. McCain since I moved to AZ in 1980 – and, as Dem. in a Blue County (Pima) in a Red State, he was a vibrant voice. He WAS a maverick. His run against Bush II, led by Rove, was horrific, deplorable, and disgusting. And he has now embraced those same Rovian-tactics that nearly destroyed his career and his family.

I saw him speak at my Niece’s graduation at the Univerisy of AZ (Tucson) 4 years ago and and he spoke on Darfur as a GENOCIDE – when no member of the Bush administration or the U.N. would utter the word.

The man I see today is a SHELL of his former self.

And, he looks sick. I have seen death in my own father, and he is courting it. Sarah Palin? Jesus help us.

I don’t want to bring any energy to this scenario, but it seems that in the research I’ve done an attack on Iran from Israel is just a matter of timing.

The predictions are that Israel will attack before November 4th if Obama is ahead, or after the election and before inauguration if McCain wins.

So, while I am happy that Palin is showing her true colors, I worry that there is a lot going on behind the scenes to steal the election from the rightful winners…again.

The yahoo email hack certainly seems to be an orchestrated effort to get Palin’s damaging email accounts “disappeared” and the tension on the international front seems to be on the rise.

It is my hope that the American public will stay focused in troubled times, but I see more fear mongering coming soon meant to distract Americans from the issues at hand.

I keep wondering why she would continue to wear an Alaskan pin when she is running on McCain’s Country First ticket – not Alaska First. But that is what that pin says to me!
I know most people noticed – McCain didn’t even wear a flag pin for his big acceptance speech.

What else I’ve learned about Alaska – thankfully there are plenty of people, hopefully masses of them, represented in this blog, who are thinking folks, have a world outlook, and are so wonderfully ready to embrace Obama and the promise he shows for turning things around. I have to pinch myself, reading all the positive messages on here. Seeing all the people working so hard, state by state. There are a lot of distractions misleading the American public right now, unfortunately the nomination of Sarah Palin is one of them.

There is a huge “American Idol” mentality going on right now, and I am afraid we are all in for a big, brutal reality check when there is another terrorist attack on US soil, or Israel attacks Iran and we go in with them.

It doesn’t seem like today’s US Embassy attack got many people’s attention, which makes me nervous. What will our big wake up call be?

I am not trying to be a fear monger or an alarmist, but there is a lot brewing right now and the election has implications internationally as well as domestically and there are a lot of people in power all over this globe who will do what it takes to get the outcome they desire.

I just posted a video, from FOX News of all places, that speaks to the issue of Israel and Iran.

I’m sure it was scary and worse for those who unfortunately were there. Here, whether it’s scary or, as someone posted above, something to fear (i.e., “fear factor”), in my mind comes down to an individual choice on how to respond, live.
It is what it is. And that’s NOT meant to be dismissive. Here is the world at the moment. Can it change? Of course. And, of course, that change doesn’t imply that everything would revert to a nostalgic time of peaches and creme. The “War on Terror” is not the province of Republicans or Democrats. It’s worldwide. There have always been enemies and probably always will be.
I wouldn’t characterize it as the “U.S. is showing such weakness.” Again, not to be insensitively reductionist, but there is no pure security for a nation. Nothing’s perfect, and the balance of aggressive effectiveness obviously shifted some over the past 20+ years. Today, though, it could have been much worse.

In Yemen, a Planned Massacre of Americans Is Averted

If the attack had gone according to plan, it would have killed or wounded countless U.S. diplomats in the ancestral homeland of Osama bin Laden, within a week of the seventh anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Although Wednesday’s attack on the U.S. embassy in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a left at least 16 people dead, the bravery and quick reaction of Yemeni security forces foiled what appeared to be a daring attempt to storm the embassy compound and kill everyone inside. No Americans were among the victims of the thwarted attack.

Yes, it could have been much worse. But it wasn’t. And that it wasn’t had little to nothing in regards to Republican or Democrat affinities.

As for GW, found this at Bloomberg’s:

Sept. 18 (Bloomberg) — This week, President George W. Bush held a state dinner for Ghana’s president, surveyed Texas hurricane damage, posed with Youth of the Year award finalists, and met with Army General David Petraeus.

During that time, Bush has publicly uttered 160 words about the worst Wall Street crisis since the Great Depression, saying the government is working to “reduce disruptions” in U.S. financial markets.

Has a lot on his plate.

and this:

Here’s what Bush said:

“This attack is a reminder that we are at war with extremists who will murder innocent people to achieve their ideological objectives.”

The president spoke after a meeting with General David Petraeus, who handed command over the Multi-National Force in Iraq, this week to Genera Ray Odierno.

“One objective of these extremists is to kill, to try to cause the United States to lose our nerve and to withdraw from regions of the world,” Mr Bush said.

The embassy assault was the deadliest attack on a compound that has been targeted four times in recent years by bombings, mortars and shootings.

Yemen, the ancestral homeland of Osama bin Laden, has struggled to put down al Qaeda-linked Islamic militants, often to the frustration of US counter-terrorism officials

“Our message is that we want to help governments survive the extremists,” Mr Bush said.

“We want people to lead normal life. We want mothers to be able to raise their sons and daughters in a peaceful environment so they can realise the hopes and dreams of a better world.”

I’ve recently an article regarding an attack on Iran. And, we are aware that there are times we hear there is a lot of chatter and then times where there is less. That is a state. In terms of this election, for a voter to shift their vote based on a timed attack suggests that that voter might not have had a firm grip of their own views of what they want in their President and of the multitude of problems the US faces, all prioritized.

Judgment, intelligence, and character and everything else one might wish their President to possess are traits and skills applied to every problem. Those who surround, the advisors, etc., are frequently reflections of this. Very rarely is a President “in it alone”. The buck stops there, but you know what I mean. Both Republicans and Democrats at the national level are not typically shrinking violets when it comes to protecting the United States, despite how some caricatures are embedded.

Okay, now I am REALLY going to bed. I used to live in Seattle and I do miss having coffee places around all the time. I think we are all contributing heavily to that industry these past few weeks.

Just a few notes (hey, only two posts from me today! I was catching up on some rest after staying up late, reading Mudflats and writing my own stuff, LOL)

-I checked several states’ Voting Laws. It appears that students can vote in any of them, so long as they reside in the state. The length of time (residency) varies, but as long as the student lives in that state they can vote.

-No where on ANY application does it mention any Federal or State Tax implications on residing in another state. When I went to school, the rule was (and STILL IS on the Federal Level), you can be claimed as a dependent on a tax return until you’re 21. If anyone tries to deny students that right, then it should be reported immediately to whatever authority handles voting.

-Julie AZ: I posted something like that yesterday myself, and I wouldn’t put it past them. They will do ANYTHING to stay in power and have no regard for Human Life. They will protect you in the womb, but that’s all.

-Tomorrow and Friday on my Blog I will pretty much be tearing up McCain in two pieces. I almost feel guilty doing it because I feel like I’m sinking to their level, but whatever I write will be documented. The man in quite simply not the right man with the right temperament to be President. I will make the strongest case yet why he is a dangerous candidate. That’s more than I can say for them. If you’re interested in my blog, click my picture. I can assure you that the next two days will be barn burners.

-AKM…I gotta admit, as an unpublished author I’m a little jealous on the book deal, but you know what? Good for you! You’re a true Patriot. Just stay safe, OK?

Just the Facts, Ma’am

Sarah Palin has the vast right wing media machine protecting & promoting her & lying about Barack Obama daily. She won’t go near the press until the Republicans teach her their lines. She’s given one interview that was teased out over days. She hasn’t gone near a press conference. She’s immature enough to not even speak Barack Obama’s name, referring to him as “our opponent.” In canned empty rhetoric speeches, McSame and Plain sound more and more like Bush. Obama consistently answers random questions from citizens and the press. Palin’s next interview is with Stazi news.

How can anyone as untested & unprepared as Palin even be considered for Vice President a mere 2 months prior to election? Well, come to think of it, Dan Quayle repeated the same sentence to almost every answer during a debate, & he got the job. We all knew Bush ran Texas’s education system into the ground, so what good was he gonna do for the Nation’s? He came up with a bogus policy and people bought it. Bush summed his entire environmental policy, which has allowed corporations to pollute the planet’s air, water, & soil, in the only sentence he was asked to make at a debate, “I’ve been a good steward of the land.” The mainstream press demanded nothing more. Debates have become zinger contests. News shoes have become talk shows with paid pundits yakking bullet points; if viewers & listeners are lucky there are 5 seconds of a candidate’s speech. Some people don’t listen anyway, and will vote for whoever waves a flag & says god, guns n’ country.

Palin’s convention speech was mean-spirited and misleading. She lies. “She said Obama had not authored a single bill. Hello? He authored the most sweeping ethics reform bill in Senate history. The ridicule of Obama’s years as a community organizer, from 1985 to 1988 (he was 27 then) makes as much sense as focusing on Sarah’s time as a sportscaster” – online quote from some guy named Ken.

Wasilla was a town of about 5000 when she was Mayor & she left it $20 million in debt. The main drag became one huge parking lot. As Governor, she recently earmarked funds for her home town when she cut them elsewhere. She thinks it’s okay to discuss banning books. She thinks triggering the deaths of 1,000,000 people, & displacing millions more from their homes, is “god’s will”? I know atheists who are more Christian.

She cut a lot of funding for poor people, and for those with special needs kids before she had one and became an “advocate.” She brags about this now as part of her, “I vetoed nearly half a billion dollars in wasteful spending.”

Look, the science is in, god gave us one planet to take care of, and teaching creationism ain’t gonnna help anyone. Does Palin believe Earth is only 5000 years old? If so, where did the oil come from? And what does it say in the Bible about recycling? The science is also in that 1 10th of our population is homosexual; it is part of “god’s plan.” It’s time for the religious right to put the old book down and think about what Jesus said, and be nice to the rest of us.

Taxes on oil in AK were raised because citizens demanded it amidst scandals. Democratic legislators fought & won for more than Palin advocated, while a few small-fish Republicans went to jail. She got the office in a red state as the “honest” Republican. If you don’t think she’s abused her offices, has a history of firing public servants because they disagree with her, and is going to further the Bush OIL FIRST agenda, you’re not paying attention.

Finally, the news is out now that while Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla, raped women were charged for forensic rape kit tests. If she has her way, future rape victims will be forced to birth children they don’t want. I’m tired of her saying she is “pro life.” If you support war over diplomacy, you’re not pro life.

Something Happening Here

Barack Obama is making history and it makes me proud to be a U.S. citizen. If he attains the presidency, he will bring wisdom and honesty to the Whitehouse. He has more intelligence and compassion than many who have been President of the United States of America. The fact that he has darker skin pigmentation than all who have held this office will heal deep national psychological wounds. But history has repeated itself in my lifetime, and the second time around is more frightening. Greater crimes have been committed by the Bush administration than Nixon’s, with no accountability to the public. There is a through-line from Vietnam to Iraq.

What the Right learned from their war in Vietnam is: control the media (from FCC deregulation, to controlled embedded reports with few to no real images of war, to a daily digest of misinformation and outright Stazi news), quell the opposition (whip the populace into a “support the troops” froth and label opposition unpatriotic, create undemocratic, defeatist “free speech zones,” institute national wiretapping with immunity – the Democrats helped the Republicans make this happen), plunder the treasury (secret meetings and no bid contracts for war profiteers), and why not fund a private military and allow it to build camps around the nation…

Since the assassinations of the Kennedys & King, police and National Guard brutality, the Left has cowered. No viable, galvanizing charismatic political leader from the Left has successfully stuck a neck out until now. Others who have tried have fallen prey to complacency ruled by collective fear, disorganization, and the above tactics of the Right.

For 8 years we’ve accepted a puppet president, and the absence of democracy from our Republic. The tactics of Mugabe and Bush differ, but the result is the same. Recall that G.W. Bush said on a live 2000 election nite broadcast while seated next to his father, “we’re going to surprise people in Florida.” It was the most composed he’s ever been. The former two-term President, former head of our secret police, handed the office to his son. Corruptible voting machines and contemptible voting schemes scandalized elections again in 2004, primarily in Ohio. Only the rare, brave few such as Stephanie Tubbs Jones made a Congressional stand.

We’ve suffered begrudgingly through the lies, from Bush’s early ‘I can’t believe I’m getting away with this’ campaign speeches, to Colin Powell’s obfuscating speech to the U.N. complete with empty vial & drawn “evidence” props. Bush by his own admittance doesn’t read the press, and rarely takes questions from reporters. The press too often dazzles itself with paid pundits, rather than careful, critical evaluation of candidates’ platforms.

Bush counts among his friends corporate executives who treat our economy like their personal ponzi scheme. As financial entities fail, and peoples lives are ruined, these executives reap their profits. 1,000,000 innocent people have died in Iraq, and millions more have been displaced. After we leveled their infrastructure in the 1990’s, killing hundreds if not thousands of soldiers who were in retreat, Iraqis were able to rebuild – not because some ruthless dictator was whipping them, but because the engineers, doctors, and laborers had the community, capital, incentive & time to do so. The U.S.A., with it’s billions of dollars and massive military presence, has taken most of that away this time. Halliburton and its subsidiaries, Blackwater, and other companies including global oil corporations have netted record profits. What’s happened in Iraq is the largest treasury theft in U.S. history thinly disguised as an unjust war.

As for “the war on terror,” has anyone refuted the fact that within 3 days of 9/11, on the balcony of the Whitehouse, Bush smoked a cigar with Saudi prince Bandar whose countrymen attacked us? Saudi royals, some with reputed ties to Al-Qaeda, were allowed to flee the U.S. Similarly, a caravan was allowed to flee U.S. troops from Afghanistan to Pakistan. Do we have to wait for historians to consider these acts?

Now the Left thinks Barack Obama will lead us from shame. Our other option was Hillary Clinton, but how can 6 successive presidencies divided between 2 families in a country of over 300 million be considered “democracy?” We’re slouching toward, if not a reckoning, at least a course correction, but think of what we’ve squandered in the process. Since we’re a capitalist society -and no presidential contender has used the word “love” in a meaningful way since Robert Kennedy – put it in these terms: imagine the possibilities if the money funneled for 50 months into the war machinations in Iraq war was instead distributed to 50 states.

It’s foolish to think the individuals and corporations who propped Cheney & Bush into office with an Oil First/War First agenda will stop if Obama is elected. The current intensity of double standard double speak indicates their intention to retain power. An oil man as president started a war for oil profits, then bitch-slapped the populace by telling us we’re addicted to it. Gas prices are higher than ever. Banks are failing. Our national debt is the highest ever. It will take more than 4 years to turn the economy around. The oil-military- information-financial corporations will regroup using the billions of dollars they’ve made and come back for more.

If Barack Obama is assassinated, or elections are thrown again, we will be demoralized. The police are ready to break out their new riot equipment and turn it on the citizenry. If we suffer another terrorist attack, we will lose more of our Bill of Rights. Hope is all we have right now.

If Barack Obama attains the nation’s highest office, barriers of individualism will crumble. We will come out of our collective fog. More people will begin to relate to each other as neighbors and fellow citizens, instead of as strangers who fear one another and focus most dialogue around private property and commercial enterprise. Something closer to democracy will come to the U.S.A.

Here is a little tidbit, this crazy Third wave religious thing has bothered me about Palin. My theory is that many of these crowds she’s attacting are in areas where there are large populations of her religious friends. Yesterday in Vienna Ohio ( a place that is a democratic stronghold) a rather large crowd turned out . Well, lo and behold an event that drew in over 1300 pentecostal folks happened to be in town for a conference on Tuesday. Big crowd at the airplane hangar.

NoSarahPalin, Bettina, Aussie, I share the concerns. But the Yeman attack did not receive a great deal of attention solely because we entered a Depression today; however, it was on every channel. There is fear worldwide of a McCain/Palin win. They are the war ticket, neither of them hides it, and the world knows it. Many in the US are planning to leave and many more are planning to send draft-age children abroad. The fear runs deep. I posted a clip of McCain joking about bombing Iran a gazillion posts ago.

That’s why we must focus on the election of Obama. For the sake of our future, for the sake of world. Fear can stop us, or it can energize us to work harder. The stakes have never been higher.

As for a war to pull us out of the Depression, a redirection of our efforts can also do so. That’s why I am excited about Obama’s plan for energy independence.

Breathe deep, seek peace.

re: Bolivar I heard on the news this morning (NPR, I think–I switch stations often) that officials were not letting people return to their homes in various parts of Texas because there is no clean water and no sewer system left. Here’s a link to an op-ed column from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette this morning, by Dan Simpson, one of the editors who is a former ambassador. He is an expert on foreign policy, and not because he can see West Virginia from the top of Pittsburgh’s Mt. Washington. He argues that the three recent instances of saber-rattling (the incursions into Pakistan, the Georgia-Russian incident, and the indications that Israel wants the U.S. to support an attack on Iran) might be themselves attempts to frighten the voters into voting for McCain and Palin. I’ve worried about that, given the neo-con determination to stay in Iraq. I don’t think these people will give up power easily. We all might think about sending emails to our Senators to make it clear that we don’t want more wars and they should make that crystal clear to the president.
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/08261/912615-374.stm

Here’s a passage: “The No. 3 cranked-up war threat is as follows. There is a new report out of Jerusalem that Israel would like to attack Iran to destroy its nuclear facilities, a favorite scenario of some in the Bush administration. The report says that Israel asked the United States for bunker buster bombs and access across Iraqi air space to carry out this attack but that the United States has said no because it doesn’t want Israel to go after Iran….

“It could easily be that the Bush administration told the Israelis “no” on the bunker busters and air clearance so that it can say that it told the Israelis not to attack Iran. If any U.S. administration really wanted to keep the Israelis from attacking Iran, there would be two sure ways to achieve that outcome: Tell Israel that if it attacked Iran the $3 billion blank check in aid it receives each year from the United States would stop or warn Israel that the United States would provide no help whatsoever in dealing with Iran’s retaliatory actions.

“No bunker busters and no access to Iraqi air space might serve as a semi-credible smokescreen for those who don’t really understand the situation. But they are not effective deterrents, and the Republicans might in this have their third voter-scaring potential war (or a real war) to attract votes on Nov. 4.

“Now, the obvious response to this “three wars” hypothesis is to say that even the most cynical Republicans would not risk another war just to win an election and stay in power. But that might be to overlook how it was that Mr. Bush won a second term, with the Iraq war, which he started, having made him a war president. The people behind him, of course, make money out of America’s wars because they raise the price of oil and the profits of defense contractors.”

And I am re-posting the terrific video link that someone else posted on one of the other threads. Thanks to whomever posted it; it is very effective.

Hummm. Here’s the info. Looks like SOMEONE has had it for 5 years. At lest someone could plan ahead that far. Comes up for renewal on 26-Apr-09. Any takers if they let it lapse? But there appears to be no functioning website? No notice. No nothing. Just access blocked. Was there one before P-Day? Does anyone know?

Looks like all the other name types for it are taken too except for .NET! Available for $18.99. You would think some rather unsavory organization would jump for that name. Well, maybe not. Two rough days on Wall Street. $18.99 is looking like pretty big money. We’ll see what tomorrow brings. Night all Worldwide Mudpuppies!

I’m voting Democrat because I want the same people who spend $900 on a hammer involved in my medical decisions.

I’m voting Democrat because supporting a work-capable person on welfare for over 50 years is so noble. Anyone who doesn’t take pity on these poor souls don’t have a heart.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that the best strategy in war is defeat. It broadens the mind to learn Japanese, German and Arabic. Talk about multiculturalism!

I’m voting Democrat because I like the ideas they have over in France, but I don’t feel like moving there. I’ll threaten to move, but I really won’t. After all, I have a good job, healthcare, lower taxes, free speech and a social framework that promotes family structure. And all of it is defended by the most effective fighting force on the planet.

I’m voting Democrat because I don’t hate myself enough for being white, male, educated, straight or middle class.

I’m voting Democrat because I’ve been whining like a ritalin-marinated toddler on a temper tantrum about my candidate not having won a Presidential election for the last eight years, and I want to be right for once.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that if I don’t have enough money, the solution is for the government to take more of my money. Who needs money when gas is $5 per gallon?

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that the ideal family is two homosexual bonobos, a goat and a parrot raising a human baby. Love and compassion is all it takes to make a successful family!

I’m voting Democrat because I’m not an individual. I’m a race, a gender, a religion (or lack thereof), and a sexual orientation.

I’m voting Democrat because I’d rather have gas prices be easily influenced by world markets rather than drill in the Anwar preserve set aside for the purpose of drilling. I think terrorists know how to use our money best.

I’m voting Democrat because it’s my body, and if I want to kill my baby, I’ll do it, even if its head is in the birth canal. If I want to cut out my intestines and feed them to the crocodiles, I’ll do that too. That’s the freedom our forefathers enshrined in the Constitution.

I’m voting Democrat because our enemies on the battlefield deserve comfy hotel rooms, Pay-Per-View, prostitutes and all the benefits of American citizenship.

I’m voting Democrat because we need to make the illegal immigrants feel more at home by learning to speak Spanish. I think we should hand them welcome brochures that detail where to get government services and free Ipods at the border too.

I’m voting Democrat because having a picture of Jesus within 100 miles of me is offensive. Colored lights are offensive. Christmas trees are offensive. Hell, let’s just ban the whole holiday! Let’s put up lots of Ramadan decorations, more footbaths, more mosques and more Islam recruiting posters in our subways instead. Diversity is our strength.

I’m voting Democrat because I care about the real victims of crime — criminals.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe we need other countries’ permission for me to turn down my thermostat.

I’m voting Democrat because I like the words “hope” and “change.” Also “kazoo.” That’s a funny word.

I’m voting Democrat because disagreeing with a black man is racism.

I’m voting Democrat because I believe that America’s founders were rich, white, greedy xenophobes, and that America’s founding principles are hogwash requiring periodic editing from an unelected group of liberal judges.

I’m voting Democrat because I hate Bush. He caused 9-11, Katrina, and the nail I broke this morning.

I’m voting Democrat because successful entrepreneurs either oppressed a minority or were lucky, and don’t deserve their financial success.

I’m voting Democrat because I can’t get the new Iphone 3G yet, my new Hummer needs new tires already, and McDonald’s screwed up my lunch order. The economy is making life in the US a 3rd world country!

I’m voting Democrat because I believe in minority rights (except in Muslim countries), free speech (with regard to pornography but not conservative talk radio), environmentalism (unless we’re talking about Al Gore’s house) and diplomacy (but never backed by the threat of military force).

I’m voting Democrat because I want the world to know that I want a weak America just like Europe does.

I’m voting Democrat because everyone deserves crappy healthcare. Sure, you’ll have to wait years for that life-saving cancer surgery. But it’s first come, first served at the cemetery!

I’m voting democrat so I can roll over and die the next time some emo ass-clown with more prescription drugs than teeth in his body shoots up a public place. Because I can’t be trusted to personally own or carry a firearm. And I’m too unsafe to dare shooting back.

I’m voting Democrat because the real cure for racism includes preferential policies based on race — particularly in presidential voting. If you believe that a black candidate ought to be qualified, as well as black, you’re worse than Bull Conner.

If only the institution of far-left values resulted in a great country. Oh, well. That won’t stop me from voting Democrat, though. After all, I’m voting Democrat because thought isn’t one of my strong suits.

Intrigued

Bettina — Please educate yourself.

09/11 was an inside job, and the next “terror attack” on U.S. soil will be another “false flag” attack just like 09/11 was. (No matter who occupies the White House.)

Governments have been using this tactic for thousands of years to scare the sheeple and/or to get their country involved in a war. Relatively recent history: USS Liberty, 09/11, Guy Fawkes (gunpowder plot), Gulf of Tonkin, etc. etc. It’s a long list.

Please don’t do a drive-by Ctrl-V

That chain-mail spammage you posted says NOTHING about teh investigation. Refusing to acnowledge what is the OT and spouting off something you did not even create yourself just screams ignorance and recalcitrance.

That post was just a series of straw men that dance around the issues avoiding the questions everyone wants answered. Why is Mrs. “transparent government” going to so much trouble to hide all this? If she was innocent, it should not matter and this should be expidited to get it out of the way before the election!

Oh, Intrigued? Enough with the conspiracy BS. It was not a bomb, it was not planned by our government.

There are many other less destructive ways they could have gotten us mobilized (Statue of Liberty perhaps?) that would not have cost so much money, and so many lives.

The worst they can be accused of is deliberate ignorance, figuring maybe that this was yet another call that the sky ws falling from the EXTREMELY popular previous administration that was ignored even though large chunks of stuff could be seen falling through the air by any who chose to look hard enough.

Again. NOTHING to do with Palin covering up her investigation.

At this rate, Hitler should be mentioned very soon…..oops.

It is terrible how Palin is being treated. I love that she is a PTA mom, is not from a wealthy background and seems down to earth. She is the pride of Wasilla-the essence of small town America. Would seem irresponsible if she was to ignore the trooper drinking beer in the car, mistreating children etc. I love her and so does America! The Woman of Wasilla the nations first female VP

This is an amazing Blog site and i’m happy i was directed here.
Now, here in SD i manage a Medical Uniform store and 99% of my clients are women. Currently i deal with say…almost 5,ooo women, and the majority of them are ESTACTIC about SP. I ask many of them why and they say either, “I believe she has more experience than Obama”, or “We need a no-non sense candidate in the White House”, and my favorite, “Because its about time”. Wow.
At any rate, il be sending them all to this site, not saying they will visit but hey, it’s worth a try.
Good job and thanks for the amazing links

I always knew that So Dakota women were wise! Believe it or not, SOME Arizona women are too!! (of course this one was born and raised in SoDak so what does that tell you!!??) We all need to do all we can to save our country from the Palin lies and ludicrous representation of women of America. Hey, all you “guys and gals” ….let’s work to get it right this time!!

Obama’s headwind has been minimized by racism, everyone has talked about that. My son-in-law plays video games with Americans and many of his office’s for staff throughout the country have been ripped apart and spray painted. He’s had several death threats many ways including video games. This is how hateful how much racism is still a factor in many pockets of America. He doesn’t make a big deal of it, just goes on.

Sort of like Sarah Palin called Indiginous peoples artic arabs. disgusting. but he is the brightest, most talented among all his peers. He is well schooled, compassionate and a fighter for the small guy or for human rights abuses. He is the best pick of all….in a very long time.

skinkor (aka Free Radical Palin)

@Matt
The problem is not just abuse of power, as shilo pointed out. It also that she is trying to cover it. She is stonewalling the investigation and she is obstructing justice.

A few years ago, Howard Baker, the Republican Chair of the Watergate committee, said that if Nixon had fired Haldeman and Ehrlichman and come clean about the break-in, then he would have retired as one of the most respected Presidents in recent history.

Neither Palin nor the Republican Party has learned a damn thing in the past 35 years. If she had taken Baker’s advice and said something like, “It was an emotional divorce. I should not have used my office in attempt to harm my sister’s ex-husband,” the country would have her to be a humble and honest woman, and that would likely been the end of it.

But she didn’t. She choose the path of dishonesty and obstruction. Now, she will pay the price of that choice.

“Troopergate” is small potatoes compared to Watergate, and it is small potatoes compared to Palin’s other problems. It is not just that she has no foreign policy experience, she does not know what our foreign policy is. Fox News with a golly and gee and “regular Americans don’t what the ‘Bush Doctrine’ is either” as many times as they like. She is not running for “Regular American,” she is running for the Vice-Presidency.

She claims to be an expert on energy, but shown that she knows nothing about the topic beyond that Alaska exports oil.

I know more about our foreign policy, and the Bush Doctrine, and energy than she does, and I want the VP to know more than I do.

She is a dishonest, willfully ignorant religious fanatic, and America cannot afford to place her in any high office.

skinkor said: “She claims to be an expert on energy, but shown that she knows nothing about the topic beyond that Alaska exports oil.”

And even then, she’s wrong about how much of the country’s energy this provides. I have yet to hear her get the numbers right!

I am so glad that the independent spirit and nature of the Alaskan people still has some integrity. Married to an AK born “dude” (arghh!) and can only vaguely relate his open and honest attitude to his parents. Also glad to know there are so many people who see beyond the Caribou Barbie image and evaluate Ms. Palin on what she says/has said and how she governs/has governed. I think the thing that really ticks me off (and I live in the independent-spirited Nevada) is that the McCain camp thinks it can come in and start meddling in Alaska State issues. And yes, she can’t get the numbers straight. She also state to Charlie Gibson she “didn’t even blink” when McCain asked her to run, but then in a more recent interview with Sean Hannity she spoke of consulting each of her family members (except the son who is going to Iraq for some strange reason wasn’t asked). Numbers, people, facts, say wha…..? Good grief! I hope you all just say “Thanks, but no thanks” to the interlopers. Keep up the cool blog!

Not only is Palin throwing Alaskans under the bus, she is lying to us, not to mention the entire country. Alaska, we can bring back honesty to government by getting each and everyone of us to call our family members and friends to vote for Obama.

We have turned our state over to the GOP and Sara Palin has help it doing it, why because she’s greedy.
Remember, SARA;
Render unto the GOP whta’s the GOP’s and render under GOD what is GOD (which is everything)

It really is nice to see a place where the reality of what the GOP is trying to do in Alaska is uncovered for all to see.

What’s weird to me is that you will never see Palin’s staffers’ emails quoted in a national news story. The question I’d like to see her asked is this, “If your staffers were using your name and that of your husband without authority, why are they still employed?”

That’s the best plan yet, vote for Obama. Tell all your friends and relatives in every state. She has to be stoped before she gets to the Whitehouse.
She got that $ for the tanning bed from that extra cash she claimed for expenses while actually being at home, $17 K wasn’t it!
She’s crook and she’ll take the whole USA down with her.
We’e counting on you guys up there!

Okay, let’s get this right. Palin says make me accountable & then refuses to testify, Frank Bailey is still drawing a paycheck & staying home, Palin bills Alaska for over 300 nights she spent at home, the attorney general says NOBODY has to testify & runs off to Kansas. Right??? This is some type of a movie maybe a comedy, RIGHT???
