New McCain Stall of Troopergate Investigation: Part Karl Rove, Part Laurel & Hardy.

17 09 2008
Here’s another great piece by one of our newest and most favorite Mudflatters, Alaska Representative Les Gara. He’s not only a great legislator, with a real insider’s perspective on the surreal world of the Alaska Legislature, but he’s a pretty entertaining read. Enjoy!
Since Monday the McCain camp has stepped up its personal attacks against Alaskans. They’ve continued their D.C.-style tactics against neighbors in this small state. The game plan is to find an excuse to stop our Legislature’s Troopergate investigation, and hide evidence McCain’s folks really don’t want to surface before November’s election. It’s been a little Karl Rove, and parts Laurel and Hardy. How else can you explain the following?
Last week the Attorney general’s office promised state witnesses would comply with subpoenas the Legislature issued last week. Tuesday the Governor’s Attorney General flip flopped, and announced that state witnesses wouldn’t comply because, well, and I’m paraphrasing here – he’s changed his mind. And in what has to be an idea hatched after a 4th Martini at Chilkoot Charlie’s, Governor Palin’s attorneys have filed a motion to dismiss the ethics claim she filed against herself two weeks ago. Yup. She really filed a complaint against herself. Tuesday she said she’s discovered, after a thorough investigation of herself, that she’s done nothing wrong. Does anyone know how to get a hold of Jon Stewart and Tina Fey?
It’s silly season up here in the far north, but this week’s moves are aimed at one thing: John McCain’s effort to find cover for being disingenuous. See, before Governor Palin’s nomination for the Republican VP spot, she did the honest thing. She admitted the evidence – of roughly 20 contacts between her staff and husband with Public Safety officials, seeking the firing of Governor Palin’s former brother-in-law – might lead a reasonable person to the conclusion that the she misused her office to fire a state employee. So when Alaska‘s Republican-led Legislature called for an investigation, she did the honorable thing and said she and her staff would comply. She denies any wrongdoing.
Things changed on August 29 when Governor Palin was added to the McCain ticket. Since then his handlers have told her she can’t testify. They don’t want the evidence in this case to come out. They don’t want her to testify under oath. They don’t want other witnesses to testify under oath. So they have engaged in daily maneuvers to attack, as disloyal to the McCain campaign, anyone who wants the investigation to move forward. They’ve now attacked two well respected prosecutors, and perhaps the state’s most highly regarded law enforcement official – the Public Safety Commissioner she hired, and then fired, Walt Monegan.
Every day this week McCain operatives have sung the same tune. Today a guy with an East Coast accent, who knows nothing about Alaska, stood in front of a McCain-Palin banner to lead the attacks against people he doesn’t know. At press conferences on Monday and Tuesday campaign staffer Megan Stapleton spit vitriol to repeat her argument that this investigation is really a “Democratic” attack on Governor Palin.
See, that’s easier than just saying their VP has reneged on her promise to testify. It’s easier than just saying they don’t want anyone testifying before the November election. It’s easier than admitting they are stonewalling a legislative investigation.
Here are a few things they failed to say. There are a few small facts that make it hard to style this as a Democratic investigation. One is that Alaska is a Republican State. We have a Republican Governor and a Legislature of 34 Republicans and 26 Democrats. This summer the Legislature’s Legislative Council voted 12-0 (8 Republicans and 4 Democrats) to hire an investigator, and appointed Democratic Senator Hollis French, a well-respected former prosecutor, to find an investigator. Governor Palin stated she and her employees would comply with the investigation. French then hired Steve Branchflower, a former DA who most recently was hired by legislative Republicans to run the state’s Office of Victims rights.
And on Friday the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 3-2 (2 Democrats and 1 Republican in favor); and the House Judiciary Committee issued a 7 – 0 (5 Republicans, 2 Democrats) advisory vote, to issue subpoenas to witnesses the McCain camp had previously stopped from testifying.
Over the last two days McCain’s outside operatives have vilified former prosecutor Hollis French – as an Obama supporter who must have called this investigation to hurt the McCain ticket. But French was appointed to oversee the investigation by a 12 – 0 Legislative Council vote, and is probably the state’s most respected legislator – by Republicans and Democrats alike. He’s so popular the Republican Party couldn’t find anyone to run against him this year.
They’ve called former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan – a Native Alaskan who has served Republican and Democratic Administrations with honor, and put his life on the line in uniform – “insubordinate.” Odd, given that when Governor Palin fired him she offered him a different job. I guess being “insubordinate” was a job requirement for the new position. And they’ve challenged the independence of an investigator and former DA, who has no animus anyone can find.
Those Swift boat ads taught the McCain folks that if you say something untrue enough times, it can stick.
My favorite moment of the week came when Governor Palin’s attorneys filed a motion to dismiss Palin’s ethics complaint against herself. Stay with me. Her attorneys have been buying the peyote, not me. See, on August 29 they needed to find a way to stop the Legislature’s investigation. They tried asking the Republican leaders to call it off, and take one for the team. But the Senate President and others honorably said no. So they came up with an argument that the State Personnel Board – 3 people appointed by Governor Palin and her Republican predecessor Frank Murkowski – had “exclusive jurisdiction” to investigate wrongdoing by the Governor. The Legislature wasn’t amused. So Governor Palin then filed a complaint against herself.
That, they said, put “jurisdiction” in the hands of their friends at the Personnel Board. They argued that since the Personnel Board was now proceeding with an “investigation”, the Legislature couldn’t.
To put icing on the cake, on Monday the Governor’s attorneys moved to dismiss the Governor’s case against herself. They said, and I loosely paraphrase again – that they tried really hard and just couldn’t find any evidence that the Governor did anything wrong. OK. I can’t believe I just wrote that. And I wish it weren’t true.
These are the things you have to do when your Presidential candidate doesn’t want his VP to honor a promise, and doesn’t want evidence to come out before an election. These are the things you have to do if your folks aren’t going to comply with a subpoena. That’s because without spin the headline might read: “McCain Interferes With Investigation Palin Agreed To.” How easy it is to re-write a headline. They learned that during the Swift boat campaign too.
All we can hope for is that members of the press will remember what they learned in journalism school. Not to repeat the spin of political operatives without reporting the truth. Not to write “he said she said” stories, and pretend the truth is somewhere in the middle. But to report the facts. No matter how you spin it, Governor Palin promised to comply with this Legislative Investigation. McCain’s folks got her to change her position. And the Legislature that voted for the investigation did so on a bi-partisan basis. End of story. End of headline.
Over the next few days McCain’s folks will try to get local legislators to step in line, out of party loyalty, and reverse their vote to investigate Troopergate. But many local Republicans, like Senate President Lyda Green, have so far refused to play those politics.
Stay for more from McCain’s Campaign for “Change.” They’ve tried to change the truth. They’ve succeeded at changing Governor Palin’s promise to comply with this investigation. Let’s see what they’ll change next.
Thanks for really being out there on the Mudflats, Les. Hey, if this ‘being a great politician’ thing doesn’t work out, you’re always welcome here.

Thanks, Mr. Gara, for this well-written and information piece. I am so proud that you represent my area of town and that I’ve voted for you each time I’ve had the opportunity. Plus, you’re the only politician that’s actually come to my door- twice! Keep up the good work- we’re rooting for you!

Great information, really, but it would sure be great to have a few paragraph breaks in that giant block of text. It’s hard enough to swallow on the content alone, no need to add eye strain to my headache.

If the McCain/Palin ticket were to win this election – I feel very sorry for every man, woman and child on the planet. If they don’t win – I feel especially sorry for the good folks of Alaska when a whipped humiliated Sarah comes home to Alaska to take her vengeance out on the you.

The new McCain/Palin theme song: Could it explain the Palin phenomenom? Maybe that minister that drives out the evil spirits can help.

You do somethng to me…Cole Porter

I was mighty blue,
thought my life was through,
till the heavens opened,
and I gazed at you.
Won’t you tell me, dear,
Why, when you appear,
something happens to me
and the strangest feeling
goes through me?
You do something to me,
something that simply mystifies me.
Tell me, why should it be
you have the power to hypnotize me?
Let me live ‘neath your spell,
Do do that voodoo
that you do so well.
For you do something to me
that nobody else could do!
You do something to me,
something that simply mystifies me.
Tell me, why should it be
you have the power to hypnotize me?
Let me live ‘neath your spell,
Do do that voodoo
that you do so well.
For you do something to me
that nobody else could do!
Since you came my way
I am bound to say
things I once thought gloomy
now both bright and gay.
I’m so happy now,
and I’m sure somehow,
of this transformation
there can be but
one explanation:
You do something to me,
something that simply mystifies me.
Tell me, why should it be
you have the power to hypnotize me?
Let me live ‘neath your spell,
Do do that voodoo
that you do so well.
For you do something to me
that nobody else could do!
You do something to me,
something that simply mystifies me.
Tell me, why should it be
you have the power to hypnotize me?
Let me live ‘neath your spell,

For you do something to me

Anyone know if there’s truth to this?
“Sarah Palin’s YaHoo Account Hijacked”:

“Circa midnight Tuesday the 16th of September (EST) Wikileaks’ sources loosely affiliated with the activist group ‘anonymous’ gained access to U.S. Republican Party Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s Yahoo email account gov.palin@yahoo.com. Governor Palin has come under criticism for using private email accounts to avoid government transparency mechanisms. The zip archive made available by Wikileaks contains screen shots of Palin’s inbox, example emails, address book and two family photos. The list of correspondence, together with the account name, appears to re-enforce the criticism.”

Whatever happened to the days when a subpoena meant you actually HAD to testify? I believe Karl Rove has gotten a few, but apparently, he doesn’t care.

I mean, if these people think it’s okay to just ignore a LEGAL obligation, think of what else they will (or won’t) do.

Kudos to Representative Gara! I am garnering more and more respect for the tone of politics in the Legislature in Alaska.

I wrote to Hollis French a couple of weeks ago thanking him for his service and commitment to finding the truth in this investigation, and urging him not to fold under pressure from person or party. It took him a while, but he ACTUALLY EMAILED ME BACK this week and thanked me for my support. This, friends and readers of Mudflats, is the way America is SUPPOSED to work. I hope the Republicans in the State Legislature up there can withstand the onslaught and do what is right for the citizens of Alaska, the United States, and for their own integrity.

This investigation was begun BEFORE McCain stuck his foot into the fire by choosing Sarah Palin. Their complaints of partisanship and “tainted” investigating hold as much water as complaining of sexim over the lipstick-on-a-pig comment. So outrageous, and so clearly full of HOT AIR!

— Sen. John McCain, in an interview earlier today, via ABC News.

Coming to a theatre near you….The “other” Pinnochio movie…..

Cast of Characters.

Gepetto: Bush/Cheney, Pride and the religious right, makes a wood puppet called Pinocchio

Pinnochio: The old guy who’s nose just keeps on getting longer and longer. “Transparency and change”…what do you call Troopergate?

Jiminy Cricket: Rovian politcal marketing message team, to act as Pinocchio’s conscience

Honest John and Gideon: old man’s pride convinces Pinnochio to join Stromboli’s puppet show.

Stromboli puppet show: that would be George Bush, Drudge, Fox news with repeat performances by a few of the very hypocritical far right religious heads.

Boys on Pleasure island which turn into Donkeys (not to be confused with a democratic donkey): A handful of republican talking heads who say one thing and do another: (The attorneys sent to stall Troopergate, Gingrich, Allen, the guy in the airport stall, etc.)

Monstro the whale: Truth and historical positions of the old guy. Role: catches up and gulps down the wayward Pinnochio.

Ending? to be determined by the votes in November…

If you’re going door to door or phonebanking for Obama, read this article:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13464.html

Key in to this bit of it to share with voters:

If Barack Obama can get every voter to learn just two numbers, he will be president. Those numbers are 91 and 134. If by Election Day every American knows McCain votes with Bush 91 percent of the time and has 134 lobbyists in his campaign, then the myth of the maverick reformer will be dead. And with it, McCain’s chances of following his unlikely soul mate as president.

A rape kit is for doctors, its a way to gather evidence, not for the victim to take home. They sometimes have informational brochures, but they themselves (as far as I have ever heard) don’t contain any pills.

As a rape victim myself who had a rape kit done at a hospital (before morning after pills were legal) they gave me an option of high dose birth control as emergency contraception, and they gave it to me as a prescription to take to the pharmacy. It was my choice whether or not to take them.

I have been online since 1999 when I shredded my left ankle ligament. Reconstructive surgery the whole bit. I used to work IBEW union work. We would have regular lay offs so I always had play time on my computer. Never Never Never NEVER have I ever used paypal…even in the most frightening transitioning times when friends offered.
Today I found something WORTH losing my paypal virginity over. I have been thinking of sending 10 bucks a month to the DNC, nope Mudflats gets it now. You have said more for our country and “we the people” in two and a half weeks than most of those bilking the system and “representing us” have had the guts to say in EIGHT years!

Alaska Representative Les Gara, you have made my day. Now maybe I can start believing that there is such a thing as an ethical politician out there. It’s been a long time since I’ve trusted any of you from your side of the border or ours.

I had just finished reading this article on Huffington and decided to look in here. What a great article! I’m wondering how Alaska is feeling today being played by the Big Boys?

I know I feel just downright lousy. I bet they are too.

My boss and I talked about this today. He was a hardcode Republican who switched to Democrat after the lies of the Iraq War became exposed.

We agree that we both feel we are just screaming into an echo chamber. The problem is, those who care – take the time to learn the truth and ignore the rhetoic and put some value on integrity.

Those who don’t care, just don’t care, so they bury their heads in the sand or cover their ears and go “Nah-nah-nah-nah-nah” so they can’t hear the truth.

And then the MSM treats it all like a big reality show where the truth counts for nothing unless it adds to the entertainment value.

Today I feel sad.

I do hope, for the good of the Alaskan people, that this investigation does not get sandbagged. There has to some political (or legal) heavyweights willing to step up and see to it that this process does not get derailed. Sadly it will come to define your state should justice not be served by a fair trial.

Katie Couric could be interesting because she has been struggling to be taken as a serious journalist. Ever since she left Today she has been dogged that she is a “lightweight”. It would be the final nail in that coffin if she does a fluff piece with the whole nation watching. Maybe we should email her office and let her know that we expect a journalist in her position to be hard hitting and not a GOP panderer. Does she want to bring shame to the legacy of Walter Kronkite? It seemed to help with Charlie…just a thought.

Also to quote Glenn Close -“I will not be ignored!”. Where are all the Floridians! I want a rally here and I need your help! Are you game?

@DrinkHack: “I wish Obama would agree to the town halls that McCain is asking for…..just put a few economists in the audience to ask the questions. McCain is toast!”

When Obama is ahead, he should not play into the hands of the laggard. Right now, Obama is getting his message out (finally), Joe Biden is riled, Hillary is looking disappointing, and the Republicans are spiraling. Can you imagine how mad Gramps must be about now?? He must be spewing vitriol all over the place, particularly on Palin. If the press would DO ITS JOB and report on the facts, and then provide a venue for the public to deliberate the facts, this would be all over. Because they can’t afford to mess up their fancy do’s and suits, the American people will have to do the heavy lifting and do it ourselves. Let Obama take the high road. We need to be the front line and take it for him.

lmao, I just looked at some of the anon boards online. (The main goal of Anon right now is taking down Scientology that is run by the organization. People participating otherwise are repsected…. eh, it’s complex.) I’m not posting the board. But I will post this: http://youfoundthecard.com/

Anyways, there are no celebratory threads. Most people are saying ‘not good’. And some are for Palin.

The thing about Anon is that they have been doing stuff exactly like this for years. They weren’t always about Scientology. Anon used to be mischief makers and scandal diggers. With the anti-Scientology began, they have gotten a huge number of ordinary people joining the unorganized and Anonymous group for peaceful protests. Some of the originals have such amazing tech skills that some of them probably couldn’t resist this Palin idiocy. At least, that’s what I think.

Please spread this around – she has been caught in here own lies:

(1) How can she credibly claim that Monegan was insubordinate when she previously praised his work and offered him another job on the Alcohol Control Board (ABC)?
See KTVA 8-15-08 article, “Governor and staff’s latest explanations leave more questions” (But weeks ago she praised Monegan for his abilities to solve those same issues when offering him a job as the director of the Alcohol Beverage Control Board. “I recognized Frank Bailey, Boards and Commissions Director that Walt’s interests and strengths could be put to good use as he could concentrate exclusively on a couple of issues that were his interest, that be bootlegging and alcohol problems in rural Alaska,” said Palin on July 17th.); see also Gov. Palin Press RELEASE No. 08-122 (7/17/08).

(2) How can she claim she fired him because he wasn’t doing enough to combat bootlegging and alcohol abuse problems, yet offer him a new job in precisely that field?
See KTVA 8-15-08 article (“I was concerned also that we were not doing enough on continuing alcohol abuse issues that I wanted to see tackled, including the bootlegging issues in rural Alaska”); see also CNBC interview (‘What does a VP do?’ video) (“it was the Commissioner that we were seeking more results, more action to fill, uh, vacant trooper positions, to deal with bootlegging and alcohol abuse problems in our rural villages especially. Um, just needed some new direction, a lot of new energy in that position. That is why the replacement took place there of the Commissioner of public safety.”)

There are only 2 options here:

(A) She is lying, and in the process willing to play politics with state procedure and to smear the reputation of a well-respected police chief (not to mention lying about ever contacting or pressuring Monegan about Wooten);

or

(B) She is not lying, and she is so irrational that she offered a job to a guy to head up the ABC — a task force she thinks is important (alcohol abuse/bootlegging, etc.) — even though she claims she fired that same guy for failing to control alcohol abuse/bootlegging AND who she now accuses of insubordination.

Which one is it?

It’s in the emails. She used them for campaign purposes while mayor of Wasilla. Emails obtained by Andrée McLeod, a self-described independent government watchdog in Alaska, and shared with Mother Jones, in 2002, when Palin was in her last year as mayor of Wasilla and running for lieutenant governor in a Republican primary, she used her official city email account for campaign purposes.
In a June 11, 2002 email to Randy Ruedrich from Palin to Eddie Grasser, a leader of the Alaska Outdoor Council, a lobby for hunters and firearms owners, Palin expressed her disappointment at not receiving the AOC endorsement. She asked if she could “use the AOC’s email address book to remind our members of my positions.”
Under Alaska state law, an officer of a municipality “may not use money held by the entity to influence the outcome of the election of a candidate to a state or municipal office.” Elected officials, according to the code, may not use the city’s “electronic facilities” for “personal gain,” to promote “political beliefs,” or to “support or oppose any candidate for public office.”
Anonymous letters had been sent to the Alaska Public Offices Commission and several media outlets alleging that Palin had used her city e-mail account for campaign-related work, had held campaign-related meetings in her office, and had used her office telephone for calls regarding her campaign for lieutenant governor. http://www.motherjones.com/mojoblog/archives/2008/09/9688_palin_mayor_email_violate_law.html

Thanks again Les.

IMHO…the way we are going to win this thing is

a. Discredit Mcpain’s CHARACTER/INTEGRITY/TRUSTWORTHINESS. Troopergate, whilst in itself may not be viewed as important by staunch Mcpain supporters…when you begin to stack it up against dishonest campaign, the line about the bridge to nowhere that was sold on e-bay etc….voters start to have questions.

b. The economy, and the ability to make voters comfortable that one is able to handle. It has become clear that Mcpain are completely out of their depth on this matter…HOWEVER, even I who is a supporter of B.O don’t feel that he has been good at getting the message out about how he will manage. I just don’t think he has succeeded in making undecideds comfortable…YET.

c. National security. There is some background noise I’ve been hearing all summer hear on the Russia issue. A while back we started the talk about oil and Russia on this blog. Today I watched a bit of Russian news channel (yes I did)…and as Medvedev (I will not jeer at SP when she fails to pronounce that:) and the presidents of S. Osettia and Abkhazia signed an alliance; the Russians are accusing the US of using relief operations in Georgia as a cover for rehabilitating missile bases in that country. WHY? Well, to strike at nearby Iran of course.

Seems to me that both Russia and the US are war mongering…here’s one for you, Medvedev threatens to annex Arctic region for oil http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/europe/article4773567.ece

And finally, aomething to cheer you up. Obama in Nevada today really hammering Mccain. He was talking about Mccains reform agenda and going after the “Good old boys”. “well” he said. “The good old boys?”……..for the Mccain campaign that’s a staff meeting”….Oh did I laugh:o

The only good reason I can imagine that Obama should agree to town halls at this point is as a way to make McCain lose his cool. THAT would be worth watching. Sarah Palin has issued a response to all of this, this investigation of Tasergate. She released internal memos that show that Walt Monegan — he’s the commissioner — got fired for insubordination on budget matters and not because of his refusal to fire Palin’s former brother-in-law. Monegan went behind Palin’s back to attempt to revive a project that Palin had vetoed, which stunned the Office of Management and Budget director. On another occasion, Monegan held a press conference with Hollis French to dissent from Palin’s budget priorities, the same Hollis French that’s pushing the ethics complaint against Palin. We mudpups applaud your frankness. Your feelings, at this moment, are ones that all of us can appreciate and sympathize with.

Initially, you deal with the personal insult of having believed the “word” of your governor only to discover that her “word” has now become meaningless.

Then you watch, stupefied, when honest reputations get trashed by people who have no knowledge of, nor appreciation for, the many tangible virtues their targets possess and the services they have provided to you!

And you know…I know you do… that when this particular circus leaves town, it’s more than debris that will be left behind for the good people of Alaska to clean up.

These jaded operatives never have to deal with repairing the problems they leave behind…between families, among public servants, between countries, peoples and most of all, ideals…and they wonder why our voter turnout is so poor!

“On a second point, how is McCain’s campaign legally able to insert itself into an issue that is solely about Alaska? The investigation has nothing to do with anything outside of Alaska and it predates Palin’s VP candidacy, so it seems to me like some kind of obstruction or interference from a legal point of view.”

I have wondered about this myself. How can John McCain take over an Alaskan issue from a legal perspective? Any thoughts?

I seriously doubt that would happen, especially with someone who is as vindictive as Sarah Palin!

I wish Obama would agree to the town halls that McCain is asking for…..just put a few economists in the audience to ask the questions.

Why should Obama interrupt his schedule to meet McSame’s demands? If he agrees to meet McSame in town halls, the media will go ape and say that Obama capitulated to McSame’s demands. Obama originally refused to go along with the town halls because McSame wanted them to be invitation only and Obama wanted them to be “first come first serve”.

Web Site Claims Palin Deleted E-Mail Account Used for State Business
FOXNews – 16 minutes ago
Gawker published screen grabs from the e-mail account before it was deactivated. Palin is already facing scrutiny for using another Yahoo account to do …

But when you click on the link, there’s nothing there. I guess that was a big “oops” for Fox News.

Also, many of the links on the page that came up lead to “page not found” notations. It looks like the McSame/Palin campaign are in full damage control today! This could turn out to be really good!

it sounds like most of the republicans in Alaska are a rare endangered species — Honest Republicans. reading about their adherence to the rule of law makes me nostalgic and a little teary eyed.

Is there some way to repopulate the lower 48 with this unspoiled breed? The ones we have down here are rotten to the core.

And please, PLEASE keep them away from the McCain goons — they’re infected with the “lie and smear” bug. I wouldn’t want to see Alaska turn into a smelly republican cesspool the way the rest of the country has.

@From England:

I too let the Michigan thing get to me. I sent an email letter to the Grand Rapids Press, letters from readers thing, it wasn’t printed. Same with a big Detroit newspaper.

But here’s the deal as I see it: I have relatives in Grand Rapids. In spite of the fact that our relatives there are practically just off the boat (my grandparents spoke other languages, immigrated to the US as adult (grandfather) and w/parents (grandmother) — both scandanavian), they are the biggest racists that I know! That town is so white it hurts your eyes!

Note, as well, Lansing, nearby (where I also have loads of relatives), has a HUGE university. Huge University in Michigan = lots of young voters & educated thinkers = ugliness for McCain/Palin.

There is no place in Michigan where they would have found such high numbers of people to whom their message would appeal as in Grand Rapids. Just down the road (well, okay a hundred miles or so) is Detroit. Detroit has just endured a horrific scandal with their mayor, a scandal similar to that of Sarah Palin’s current troopergate. Lies lies & more lies. Further, they are paying lots of money for a new election to have a mayor that will only be in office 8 months, that mayor will replace the corrupt one that’s been booted. Anyway, no need to look for support for McCain/Pain there! Add to that the economy woes in a town so utterly dependent on the automobile industry & other blue-collar stuff, and Detroit is a no-sell.

All of that being the case, with Pain’s latest scandal getting bigger & bigger I see some hope for Michigan turning blue. I am crossing my fingers.

What a mess! I’d actually hoped we’d be able to get the whole trooper-gate mess straightened out. I suspected she’d over-stepped the bounds, but was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt until the results of the investigation came out. I gave her points for being willing to cooperate. I was even willing to see this as a learning experience for a green Gov. No points now. — And god only knows the DC group doesn’t want her to be seen as green! Meanwhile, the DC boys are creating a stinky legal crisis in our fair state that will have long term repercussions.

What should we be do to stop the stonewalling?

Here’s another post where I’ve linked to mudflats:

Alaska: Fiefdom Harbinger of the Future? You decide.

Just a few paragraphs for the flavor:

War More Years: The first volleys have already been fired in Alaska. Let’s keep it out of the lower 48 on Nov. 4. And then declare Alaska a “disaster area” due to the craven, slash and burn tactics of the mcPain ticket on preview in Alaska already.

If you love the Rule of Law, if you care about the Constitution, then take a close look at what is happening in Alaska right now. Because unless we take back The Rule of Law and make sure the Constitution is enforced, we too will become serfs of mcPain – a gruesome twosome of lying and moral bankruptcy when it comes to campaigning. Take a look at the many posts at mudflats, the blog of AKmuckraker, if somehow you have missed the nuances of Alaskan politics under SP and the upgrade in mendacity, cynicism, and downright defecating on the Rule of Law in Alaska, since SP joined the mcPain ticket.

Total allegiance to a cult of personality is the Lady mcPain style. Carefully staged tv appearances is all they’ll permit for the shadowy Lady in Waiting – whose parroted cliches have now become the stuff of political cartoons and late night tv shows. You gotta show deference, you see. Or else! …

This is America? And the Rule of Law means nothing? Except what mcPain wants to say it is? And telling the truth means nothing? If it happens to undermine the LIE that this ticket includes a nobody with the conscience of a Lady MacBeth and the honeyed-tongue of a sham preacher?

Here’s your link for more of that post.

well, I just sent a long letter to Ms. Couric with specific questions I want to know the answers to, and with a repeated plea to her to make Sarah Palin answer the questions AND the follow up questions.

I think we should absolutely send Katie Couric the questions we want answers to- she should know exactly what we are looking for.

By the way, I pointed out that she was being given a privilege that few other reporters were being given (although that fact alone is astonishing), and that she should take it and make the most of it because you never know when SP will agree to sit down and answer questions again. Maybe never.

The McCain/Palin straight talk express rolls into Grand Rapids Michigan today for a 7:00 EST town hall meeting. The event is to be held in a field house that can hold 3500 people. The 2000 tickets for the general public were given out in 2 hours yesterday. I assume the other tickets go to
the party faithful. It is possible the event may be covered live or via a webcast on local TV. (www.woodtv.com) This is a very strong Republican area, so I am sure the fieldhouse will be full.

From comments in the local papers (below) it appears there is still a lot
of work to do.

“I’d vote for her for president today.”
“She just comes across as somebody who is honest and sincere”
“..she’s very conservative”
“She’s like the common people. I can relate to her”

Interesting that most comments were about Palin, not McCain.
Until the MSM picks up on some of the negatives regarding Palin

New online tool to aid with overseas voting is launched

An online tool was launched this week that proponents say will make it easier for overseas Americans to vote if they have requested but not received their absentee ballot.

Waiting for a ballot?

Did you register to vote and request an absentee ballot for this election? Are you still waiting for it to arrive? If so, you can use the federal write-in absentee ballot, which will let you vote in your district’s federal races. Voting officials recommend using the FWAB option if you don’t receive your ballot by Sept. 30.

To use a new automated system that will help you fill out a write-in ballot for your home county, log on to Overseas Vote Foundation.

“Certainly AIG, though, with the construction bonds that they’re holding, and with the insurance that they are holding, very, very impactful to Americans,” she said. “So you know, the shot that has been called by the feds, its understandable but very, very disappointing that taxpayers are called upon for another one.”

SUGGESTION: For those of you who wish to “do something,” I suggest writing to Katie Couric, and tellng her about Mudflats.com. If she gets a couple hundred emails mentioning mudflats.com for research and documentation of SP, I suspect she actually will read it (or at least have her staff check it out, which is probably good enough)

Katie is a former Washington correspondent (unlike CHarlie Gibson) so this may turn out to be an excellent interview. I thought the next interview was Hannity. I wonder why they are bothering with anything but FOX.

This of course, isn’t the only suggestion – there are lot sof other great suggestion. Among them, I think writing and thanking the Alaskans who either have stuck their neck out – or had it stuck out for them – is another great thing. It will give support and courage to them, and others who are deciding whether to speak up.

Can someone post an directory of such people (Moneghan, Branchflower, Les Gara, the librarian, with contact information (public information, not private) and brief statement of their role. Or better yet – AKMuckraker – can you have an icon to get this information without having to hope you find it in the comments? Not sure if that’s possible.

Palin said, “Clinton whinning about the media didn’t make her look very good as a serious politcian.” I say, quit whinning about the media Sarah, you started whinning before they even knew anything about you, you whine about everything. You whine when everyone starts finding out what a liar you are. Earmarks, Bridge to Nowhere, Troopergate, your views on environment, your views on Iraq on and on and on. Whine, whine, whine. Even McCain is starting to whine. Just a bunch of whinners. And you to not look like serious politicians.

I am thrilled to have found your site thanks to a reference made by a caller today on the NPR broadcast. I will pass on the information to others here in Colorado. The rest of the country needs to hear the “rest of the story” from you, who know Palin best. One of my good friends refers to McCain as Sarah’s “Pimp”. Quite fitting, huh? All joking aside-this woman is a frightening prospect for our nation. Keep up the good work!

I lived in the South East Bush through the seventies until ‘82 among a population that was primarily male and which , like most frontier pioneers, did not fit well in civilized society. We were, as in the title to Don Berry’s book about 19th century fur trappers, “A Majority of Scoundrels.”

There were still a mess of good folk, particularly those who live through their “Live Fast, Die Young, and Leave a Beautiful Corpse” period.

Excuse me, but their employer is the State of Alaska, not Sarah Palin. If their loyalties lie with Ms. Palin rather than with the State, they all deserve to lose their jobs.

I am beginning to wonder about the Wooten story. Don’t get me wrong, I do think that Palin, the Dude and her staff pressured Monegan about Wooten, and I do think they were mad that he had not fired Wooten. But you know, she had been in more than a year — why did she not act sooner. And why are her staff stonewalling so hard — I mean at this point confirmation that she was mad at Monegan and/or pressured him to fire Wooten is well, not that big a deal — everyone already knows or has guessed that she is fibbing — the Republican base does not care .. it did not hurt her numbers – while this stonewalling is doing much more damage than a report could possibly do.

And so, why? Why take so much damage to conceal something everyone essentially knows. On the other hand, suppose these 10 staffers are required to testify, under oath — what might they say. Was there another reason she wanted Monegan gone? Something else he was involved in looking into?

In that respect remember why she fired the police chief in Wasilla — because her campaign supporters, especially the bar owners were mad that the chief wanted to close bars at 2am instead of 5am and opposed the drunks bringing concealed weapons with them — apparently her campaign contributors wanted this chief gone. Is it possible that something similar happened with respect to Monegan? Was she the recipient of a call about him, a demand that he be stopped? If that was the case the whole thing starts to make a lot more sense — they are not so worried about the Monegan/Wooten thing — they are worried about what the investigation might uncover …

Laurie, Bush is hiding.

Hurrican Ike’s destruction is far worse than the public reports indicate. The press is getting very little of the story and was barred from some locations. Check out the internet blogs instead. And FEMA is moving too slowly – again.

The US economy is tanking (and will get worse), taking the overseas markets with it.

All on Bush’s watch. His people must be going crazy, trying to find a way to blame the Dems. Remember, they blame the Dems for 9/11, even tho it happened on Bush’s watch. When they figure out the spin, Bush will emerge, clinging tightly to his teleprompter.

WTF, this is a man who has an MBA, from Harvard no less, but who managed to run three separate businesses into the ditch. Is anyone REALLY surprised that he’s done the same with the economy? The writing was on the wall before 2000 that he couldn’t manage anything.

@ MJC, Let’s Get Real, Charcoal

make no mistake, *I* don’t need any convincing that Hannity is not a legitimate journalist … I know all about Hannity …

what is confusing me is that MSM has been talking about the Hannity appearance for days as SP’s “second interview” – really, it’s been all over the news … (I’d publish links, but wordpress won’t let me)

Now, all of a sudden, since K. Couric’s face-to-face has been lined up, I keep hearing, “Couric’ll be SP’s 2nd interview”

Granted, Couric has more street cred in her sleep than Hannity could ever hope to accumulate over a lifetime, but it just seems a little strange to me … I don’t think it’s a conspiracy, or a coverup, or really even any kind of a big deal whatsoever … I was just wonderin’, that’s all … seems kinda strange to me …

Interesting analysis. Why do this after a year in office? Either there is a hidden rational reason like you suggest, or she really is this driven and possessed and it is a mere character flaw of vindictiveness and lack of perspective. If it is nothing more than that, then it will baffle people looking for intelligent logic.

And in the situation this nation is in, the whole thing is dysfunctional on the national level. No way did McCain or his staff EVER vett her. Absolutely no way at all. The man is reckless beyond belief. We have all been completely insulted as citizens. As a veteran I take it personally. I for one am very angry at the utter thoughtlessness of MsCain/Palin and the entire Republican Party. Their “soul mate” petty thoughtlessness is utterly criminal.

If the nation can come though in this election, this is a change to completely destroy the Neocon and Theocon branches of the once respectable Republican Party once and for all. TOTAL DESTRUCTION IS NOW POSSIBLE. This election could put James Dobson’s head on a pole FOREVER. End the Rovian culture wars madness in national politics. Right here. Right now. Forever.

GALVESTON — President Bush landed Tuesday on the storm-devastated island to receive a briefing from city, state and federal officials about death and property damage caused by Hurricane Ike….. Bush, who later took an aerial tour of the area, declined to issue a statement to the press or answer any questions while in Galveston.

GALVESTON – Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas on Monday ordered all city employees not to talk to news reporters. She did not say when that order would be lifted….. Reporters would be allowed on the island only if they had proper identification, Thomas said. She didn’t clarify what that meant. Reporters were also forbidden from visiting areas on the far West End, Thomas said. She did not explain why.

I hear you about Cindy McCain. As a social worker I have worked with abused women. Cindy is an abused woman. It doesnt matter how rich she is…she is still abused. John McCain did call her filthy names in front of reporters…so what does he do when they are alone I wonder.

Hey Mudflats,
Just heard about the “hacking” of Palin’s email account. I am skeptical. Molly Ivins, I believe wrote some things about Rovian tactics like this. I remember some example of a Republican in Texas claiming his office was bugged and it ended up Rove set this up to make the opponent look bad. I will try to find the story, but anyway, I don’t buy this story. The timing is just too convenient and aimed at making her look like a victim and distract from the stonewalling.

I feel sorry for you up there–you are dealing with big league psychopaths now.

ON-line Video Convo tonight at 8 PM with Biden and Hillary

As part of the Obama campaign’s “Women for the Change We Need Week of Action,” Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton got together for a conversation with women on the issues that are most important to them. The conversation, one of the largest women’s web forums in history, will be broadcast to tens of thousands of women across the country.

Women across the country will be able to watch the address online and hear about Senator Obama’s record on the issues of concern to women. Topics that will be covered will range from, equal pay for equal work, reproductive health, expanding the Family Medical Leave Act, to protecting Social Security. Joe and Hillary answer questions submitted to the website over the past few days. The video discussion will air tonight at 8:00pm EDT.

Listening to Andrew Halcro’s webcast. Boy, this failure to cooperate is even making some Palin supporters unhappy although I’m not convinced that they’re unhappy enough to throw the lever for Obama/Biden. And those remarks about the well-liked and respected Walt Monegan? Seems to be backfiring BIG TIME! Halcro is now criticizing Rush Limbaugh for talking on his radio show about what a horrible guy Monegan is without ever having met him and probably not ever having set foot in the state.

@ Lani
I saw a crawler on Matthews where the Mayor of Houston is saying FEMA’s behind again in providing needed relief. It’s finally beginning to trickle up, but there’s been a lot other stuff to cover this week, too– including some really important stuff, along with what Ted Turner called the media’s obsession with “the freak of the week.” If Bush had any hope at all of salvaging a positive legacy, this week should have done it in. Can’t say I feel one bit sorry about that.

I’ve been so glued to Mudflats that I haven’t watched much TV… Keith and Rachel, and part of News Hour is about it. Even cable news can’t manufacture more than 24 hours in a day. Maybe, just perhaps if the media had dialed back on their breathless coverage at the time, they’d have the time to give it more due now. Ahhh, but I’m dreaming again. Not to say that real-time coverage isn’t important, but it seems to me that the important time is to prod people to get out in time. Once it hits, there’s not much else that can be done until it blows over and it’s time for BDA (battle damage assessment). Seems to me that there was a lot of air time spent looking at reporters trying to keep their balance and find something original to say.

ocliberal (11:16:13) :

Today I feel sad.

ocliberal,

Another Lie Debunked

Despite Saying She Wanted to Lower It, Palin’s Salary Stayed the Same.

“The mayor’s wage was
increased from $64,000 to $68,000 in 1996, just before Sarah Palin was elected…Palin has continued to
lobby the council to reduce the salary.” Palin said, “I voted against it when I was a council member and I
felt like a hypocrite when I came in and had to accept it.” In the end, the council voted to keep the salary
at $68,000. [Frontiersman, 3/5/99, 3/12/99]

Michelle Obama, Jill Biden, and Lilly Ledbetter held Virginia Women for Obama voter registration rallies in Richmond and Charlottesville today. No crowd estimates from Richmond available yet, but local Charlottesville TV channel estimated 3,000 people trying to fit into a space meant for 700! Today’s paper also reports that Virginia voter registrations “grow at huge rate.” “More than 250,000 first-time voters have registered in Virginia this year. That marks a 5 percent increase . . . .”

Just received this e-mail from Obama Campaign manger, David Plouffe.

Includes an excellent video with some great information on their strategy

________________________________________________________
Want a look inside our strategy to win the battleground states?

I recorded a video on my laptop yesterday to brief you on the plan — including details that haven’t been shared publicly before.

Our fight in the battleground states is going to be tougher than a lot of you may think. Take Florida, where George Bush won by just 381,000 votes in 2004. The campaign we’re running there is going to cost more than $39 million.

That can only come from supporters like you — unlike John McCain, we don’t take money from Washington lobbyists or special interest PACs.

To reach our goal, we need 50,000 new donors by Friday at midnight.

And if you make your first online donation today, your gift will go twice as far. A previous donor has promised to match every dollar you donate.

A matched donation of $5 becomes $10, a donation of $25 becomes $50, and a donation of $50 will become $100. Watch the video and double your impact today.

Make a matched donation

This race has come down to a matter of weeks, and it could pivot on a few tremendously important swing states.

Supporters like you are strengthening this campaign in amazing ways — voter registration efforts, organizing in your communities, and bringing folks into the political process like never before.

Barack and Joe can’t win this without you.

Make a donation of $5 or more right now to provide the resources we’ll need to make victory a reality:

https://donate.barackobama.com/match

This campaign is committed to winning in every state we can. But it’s the support of folks like you that will decide this election.

Thanks for everything you’re doing,

David

Regarding this email crap: Have to agree with the person that thinks it smells fishy. The GOP obviously has quite a bit invested in making Pain out to be a victim — of every group, every person, everything. In the interests of that why not make out that her email has been hacked. Certainly would then lead to some sort of “reasonable” (using the GOP definition of that, of course) explanation for why her emails are not available. And if someone had really hacked into her email, they’d have leaked something much more interesting than some family photos. COME ON MSM!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don’t fall for this GOP bullshit! I worked for FEMA for years. It was a proud and effective organization after the advent ot Witt during the Clinton years. It was rewarding and fullfilling work. i can’t begin to tell you the difference once Bush took over and absolutely politicized the organization, put people in charge who had not one clue about disaster work and dismantled lots of the Group and put it under Homeland Security. The emphasis became speed, not accuracy. Cutting corners, not taking care of victims. The amount of payments fell drastically and eveything that WAS paid, was subject to audit! It was really scary (and from what I hear, still is!!) There are actually folks with stop watches and making agents time every call and the length of time it takes to work a case, no matter how complicated (and, boy, some of them can be very complicated, particularly it was worked incorrectly to begin with). No one wants to take the time to make corrections since it counts against their efficiency ratings. Agents get a daily efficiency rating. Which does NOT include the number of cases worked correctly! It does include the number of cases worked, whether right or wrong!

So let me guess, given Palin’s recent actions if she were to be impeached McCain’s lawyers would just say it doesn’t count and she won’t leave the Governor’s Mansion?

Given the recent rash of ignoring subpeona’s the next logical step by not only Palin but Bush would be just to ignore elections and impeachments and just say none of it counts and I’m not leaving.

Imagine if any of us ignored a subpeona, wonder what would happen? Of course none of us have a couple of million dollars worth of lawyers telling we don’t so again, it doesn’t count.

I swear these people are like children…if they don’t hear what they want they cover their ears and go la, la, la, la in the hopes all the bad stuff goes away.

Just the Facts, Ma’am

Sarah Palin has the vast right wing media machine protecting & promoting her & lying about Barack Obama daily. She won’t go near the press until the Republicans teach her their lines. She’s given one interview that was teased out over days. She hasn’t gone near a press conference. She’s immature enough to not even speak Barack Obama’s name, referring to him as “our opponent.” In canned empty rhetoric speeches, McSame and Palin sound more and more like Bush. Obama consistently answers random questions from citizens and the press. Palin’s next interview is with Stazi news.

How can anyone as untested & unprepared as Palin even be considered for Vice President a mere 2 months prior to election? Well, come to think of it, Dan Quayle repeated the same sentence to almost every answer during a debate, & he got the job. We all knew Bush ran Texas’s education system into the ground, so what good was he gonna do for the Nation’s? He came up with a bogus policy and people bought it. Bush summed his entire environmental policy, which has allowed corporations to pollute the planet’s air, water, & soil, in the only sentence he was asked to make at a debate, “I’ve been a good steward of the land.” The mainstream press demanded nothing more. Debates have become zinger contests. News shoes have become talk shows with paid pundits yakking bullet points; if viewers & listeners are lucky there are 5 seconds of a candidate’s speech. Some people don’t listen anyway, and will vote for whoever waves a flag & says god, guns n’ country.

Palin’s convention speech was mean-spirited and misleading. She lies. “She said Obama had not authored a single bill. Hello? He authored the most sweeping ethics reform bill in Senate history. The ridicule of Obama’s years as a community organizer, from 1985 to 1988 (he was 27 then) makes as much sense as focusing on Sarah’s time as a sportscaster” – online quote from some guy named Ken.

Wasilla was a town of about 5000 when she was Mayor & she left it $20 million in debt. The main drag became one huge parking lot. As Governor, she recently earmarked funds for her home town when she cut them elsewhere. She thinks it’s okay to discuss banning books. She thinks triggering the deaths of 1,000,000 people, & displacing millions more from their homes, is “god’s will”? I know atheists who are more Christian.

She cut a lot of funding for poor people, and for those with special needs kids before she had one and became an “advocate.” She brags about this now as part of her, “I vetoed nearly half a billion dollars in wasteful spending.”

Look, the science is in, god gave us one planet to take care of, and teaching creationism ain’t gonnna help anyone. Does Palin believe Earth is only 5000 years old? If so, where did the oil come from? And what does it say in the Bible about recycling? The science is also in that 1 10th of our population is homosexual; it is part of “god’s plan.” It’s time for the religious right to put the old book down and think about what Jesus said, and be nice to the rest of us.

Taxes on oil in AK were raised because citizens demanded it amidst scandals. Democratic legislators fought & won for more than Palin advocated, while a few small-fish Republicans went to jail. She got the office in a red state as the “honest” Republican. If you don’t think she’s abused her offices, has a history of firing public servants because they disagree with her, and is going to further the Bush OIL FIRST agenda, you’re not paying attention.

Finally, the news is out now that while Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla, raped women were charged for forensic rape kit tests. If she has her way, future rape victims will be forced to birth children they don’t want. I’m tired of her saying she is “pro life.” If you support war over diplomacy, you’re not pro life.

Yes, amazing that workers in these plants get it. As I said somewhere here a few days ago, the most amazing sight I saw on Labor Day at the Pittsburgh parade was the United Mine Workers marching in camoflauget-shirts, shouting “Obama! Obama!” They didn’t need an economic meltdown to get the picture.

I saw a reference above that said Chris Matthews (aka Tweety) grew a pair. What happened? I had a very long today and am just now logging on. Had to do my homework. 🙂

Glad, also, to see that someone must be getting the Hurricane Ike story out. This is a big, big deal. We can’t let Bush sweep this under the rug. It’s just two more reasons why McCain can’t win: global climate change and FEMA. I am going on the MSNBC site and emailing Rachel to see if she can’t cover it. Also think that Les Gara needs to be on Countdown!

when those guys became aware that the gov and her staff were stupidly using public email accounts…they went to work

they were looking for salacious shit, like nude pics of sarah or bristol breast feeding

what they found was that yes, sarah uses her yahoo account for state biz

and they also found that it seems bristol has bonded to the baby alot more than sarah

the election will hinge on the economy (it always does) but i believe that in her stupidity to climb up the ladder more quickly than she ought, palin will see her political career die the first week of november

Our economy still goes great guns unless you are me, back in school with a son in college and needing another three gas bucks a day just to get us to class while my ex cannot pay her mortgage.

I’ve made enough money that I think I can get it done. But, my severance medical insurance played out, and I can not afford $1000/month to maintain it, so where does the 5K for my son’s appendicitis come from?
