Alaska AG Says None Will Testify in Troopergate Probe.

16 09 2008

Well, if anyone had any doubt about how dirty this would get, wonder no more. The Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg (3rd in line for the Governor’s throne should Palin win the VP slot, and Lt. Governor Sean Parnell win the House seat) has announced that none of the 13 people state employees who were issued subpoenas in Palin’s ethics investigation into the “Troopergate” scandal will testify, unless there is a unanimous vote from the full Senate or the entire Legislature.

In other words, the Attorney General has stated that nobody who is subpoenaed will show up.

Either the AG and the McCain campaign are genuinely afraid of what this investigation will uproot, or they are just trying once and for all to illustrate that the guy at the anti-Palin rally in Anchorage on Saturday who held aloft a sign reading “Bush in a Skirt” was right. My money is on the former.

Oh, and five private citizens from the Fairbanks area today filed suit to halt the investigation on the grounds that the entire thing is unconstitutional. And of course Palin herself has folded her arms, crinkled her nose and said she will no longer be cooperating in this investigation that she “welcomed” just a few short weeks before she was assimilated into the world of Republican politics on the national scale.

I keep searching for the appropriate Alaskan metaphor for overkill. Swatting a mosquito with a sledge hammer? Shooting a moose with a cruise missile? Whatever metaphor you choose, the message is the same. There’s a whole lot of legal muscle, big league strategy, and nasty DC Rovian politics descending on our poor little town in the Last Frontier. Makes you wonder what exactly there is to find, and how desperate they are to make it go away.

And, of course, there always has to be an official reason given for the stonewalling. And it’s usually a good laugh line, so here it is, from AG Talis Colberg:

“This is an untenable position for our clients because the governor has so strongly stated that the subpoenas issued by your committee are of questionable validity.”

Ahh. It would be uncomfortable to testify because the governor doesn’t want them to. Now, I get it.

The silver lining in all this? The more paper they throw, the more tantrums they throw, the guiltier they look. Long ago, Rep. Les Gara suggested to Palin that she confess to a bad judgment call, and hire Monegan back. She didn’t listen. And now the act of firing Monegan, which has gone so far to illustrate her temperament, her decision making ability, and her judgment, has come back to haunt her, with help from the McCain campaign.

There is a growing sense in the blogosphere, in local and national media, and among people I know, that the bloom is off the Palin rose.

One of my favorite writers, Harlan Ellison described what it was like to finally make it as a writer in Hollywood in television. I think it also applies here (and I’m paraphrasing:

Success is Hollywood (insert Politics here if you so choose) is like climbing a giant mountain of cow flop to pick the perfect rose from the top. And when you finally reach there, you realize that you’ve lost all sense of smell.

I read this in the news as the AG saying that state employees would not testify, which excludes Todd Palin and two others I can’t remember. Has it been extended to all those subpoenaed? Can he even do that? Is he actually Gonzalez? When will my head actually explode?

Simply astonishing.
This simply does not seem like the America I learned about in school and support with my vote when asked. It is not the America my neighbors discuss at our annual block party. It is not the country I have taught about to my children.
What I think Palin and the current reprehensible incarnation of the GOP fail to grasp is that there is a good, decent central core to this nation that is not represented by this sort of bald repression of the truth- people that cannot be described by the Hallmark platitudes in Palin’s speeches. We know what is going on here.l
The sooner the voters can trounce this disgusting behaviour the better.
Shame on this.

Uh…correct me if I’m wrong, but usually if you refuse to show up for a subpoena, you get arrested.

How come this isn’t happening, and most especially to the First Dude (a/k/a/ Prince of Darkness)? Have we set a new standard by not letting Bush, Cheney, et al get away with it by ignoring CONGRESSIONAL subpoenas?

There is something here, and there has been from Day One. All she had to do was come clean. I guarantee she’s dumped for Lieberman shortly before the debates or after Biden rips her to shreds afterward.

More of the same. A constant reminder of the lies she told to get elected. Open and transparent, yeah. I will welcome any investigation with enthusiasm. This Republican has gone from holding his nose and voting M/P to not voting for president at all to voting for Obama/Biden. More news like this and you’ll find me on the corner of Seward Highway and Northern Lights with a sign.

Well at least she is now being veted by the people, and those that want to see beyond the eye glasses can say we read it here first. I check this site along with my inbox 1st & last thing each day.

BTW if anyone is looking for some economic help from Obama, a real tax break, a way to cut your heating oil or gas bill and were trying to figure out how to buy an energy generating solar cell, read this note I found on the Obama site:

Obaba wants a Windfall Profits Tax to Provide a $1,000 Emergency Energy Rebate to American Families:Barack Obama and Joe Biden will enact a windfall profits tax on excessive oil company profits to give American families an immediate $1,000 emergency energy rebate to help families pay rising bills. This relief would be a down payment on the Obama-Biden long-term plan to provide middle-class families with at least $1,000 per year in permanent tax relief.

Seems only fair that the companies that are racking in $4-5 per gallon should be helping us fill up our fuel tanks, or would that be to much like a Robin Hood save? Now to help push this through our young Robin Hood is going to need our help electing a strong Dem majority, or no matter how much reaching across the isle we do, it’s going to be thrown back in his face that he’s broken some law of common sense. What’s good for the highest amoung us is good for the poorest elderly and unemployed amoung us don’t you know?

AKM – “The silver lining in all this? The more paper they throw, the more tantrums they throw, the guiltier they look. ”

I’ve thought this right from the off – that Palin was dodgy (as we’d say here in Britain), that there was no way she was any kind of ‘reformer’, that she was just as much an ‘old boy’ as any of the others in the ‘network’. you could tell it a mile off – a rightwinger using absolutely the same practices and methods (and being driven by absolutely the same ego and desire for power) as all the powerful repubs and neocons before her.

in short: the truth is outing. and Obama is playing it veeeeery wisely – because it really could be that McCain/Palin will hang themselves with their own rope. here’s hoping.

I am thinking that these Republicans, like a kid who thinks he’s getting a trust fund, started believing in the Permanent Republican Majority.

Now, that that seems in question, they project what they would do to an outgoing administration. Which is:

Investigations. Indictments. Trials. Convictions. Punishment.

They will do anything to keep that from happening. ANYTHING!

Their lives depend on it.

This is just Cheney politics as usual to create another cover-up, and people are starting to figure out that Palin is crooked as a pit bull’s hind leg. And her First Dude, too, who should have to testify since he is not an elected official!

McCain has taken a wrong turn at Wasilla and found himself lost on the tundra here. Even if they manage to manipulate the state government of Alaska, this story is never going away now because SP appears to be hiding misdeeds.

Keith Olbermann mentioned two other disturbing things last night –

“Spewing Lies” (This is awesome!)

Palin told a story in Ohio yesterday that her teleprompter broke down on the night of the speech at the RNC, when the media were sitting right there and clearly saw that it was not broken at all. So she lied big time.

And even more disturbingly, one of the quotes from her now-famous speech was from Westbrook Pegler, a writer whom Olbermann calls a “Right-Wing, McCarthyite, and Anti-Semitic” and who once lamented that Franklin Roosevelt wasn’t assassinated, and later wrote that he was hoping for an assissination of Robert Kennedy.

So Palin quoted him without saying his name in her speech – was that a winky to the Neo-Nazi Clan Members?

(I swear I haven’t been drinking – this was on TV!!! Watch the video!)

As the NYT pointed out, Sarah Palin has a history of bringing her allies into high places with her. And if it’s not shameful enough, she’s given Track’s girlfriend, Britta Hanson, some pretty big positions for an 18-year-old….

I have been following the Palin coverage since this all broke and Sunday night something on Fox News’ Palin personal bio report made me do a Google search and then wonder: what the heck? On the Fox News Palin bio (trying to find it on YouTube), Piper inadvertantly said Track’s girlfriend (at least at the time of the taping in April) was named Britta.

A quick Internet search revealed that Britta Hanson was also a 2007 Wasilla grad. She interestingly enough is in a photo with Sarah Palin and Piper on a “tour” of the state capitol building because she was a page/intern in Juneau from Wasilla High (um, that’s not a commuting distance for a high school student, was she living with the Palins at the mansion?). And, isn’t it hard to get a page position there? I live in Oregon and you have to have some heavy duty ties to political families to get that type of internship at the state capitol.

Photo here: http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/031407/sta_20070314014.shtml

Then I came across Britta Hanson again as a governor-appointed commissioner for Serve Alaska. Now, this seems a little shady, no? An 18-year-old college student is appointed to a statewide government commission? Is this a paying job? In the brief bio it mentions Britta spent the spring in Spain? How did she get any work done for the Alaska commission if she was in Spain.

http://www.servealaska.alaska.gov/commissioners.htm

(BTW, It seems like folks from Wasilla are/were appointed by Palin quite frequently.)

She also won a Rotary Scholarship, which might be because she’s just a bright student. Doesn’t explain how this young woman from a very small town has the resouces to afford living in Juneau for a semester on her own or going to Spain for a semester. As far as I know, Wasilla is a very small and not a wealthy town. Is the governor aiding this young woman financially because she is dating her son??

This is all a little odd.

The ReThuglican Party has been poisoned by Dubya’s imperious–regal and imperial–claims to executive power. This president’s stubborn insistence that he is above American law and can extend this protection to his favored toadies has trickled down to blight even the least significant Party aspirant. Little Caribou Barbie turns out to be just another bully: she looks all sweet and vulnerable, threatened by the crows roosting on her self-indulgent recklessness in causing Troopergate, until running mate and heroic ex-POW GI John sends her the legal and PR equivalents of a Ranger team with orders to destroy the bipartisan investigation; then she apparently has the gall to believe–and the pliable Ken-doll AG to justify–that Alaskan and American laws governing subpoenas and testimonies and investigations do not apply to her. Here’s the thing about bullies: They keep bullying until someone stops them.

“We the people”–we who form and own our government–we have to accept our share of responsibility. Harriet Myers and Karl Rove and George W. Bush and Dick Cheney and Alberto Gonzalez and numerous others didn’t just thumb their noses at us every time they refused a subpoena or sought special conditions for their testimony or dodged questions. They trampled–with their big black jackboots–our rights to just leadership, personal security, and civil society under law. The point is: We let them. We did not stop them before. Will this time be any different?

biglake, NY Times agrees with you and hopes Congress will resolve the issue with Rove before they adjourn.

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is deciding what matters should get priority in the short time left before Congress adjourns this month. Her list must include a vote to hold Karl Rove in contempt for his lawless decision to defy a Congressional subpoena to testify about the United States attorneys scandal. There is a vital national interest in getting to the bottom of this matter — and in not allowing Congress’s authority to be undermined.”

todd palin is a private citizen

the state ag cannot legally represent him, nor can the governers atty

so who is his representation, and what is his reasoning for refusing the subpoena

as far as i can tell, he can be held in contempt and be sent to prison

Uncle Joe, You are correct. My mistake, which I’ve corrected. Colberg said only the state employees will not testify. That leaves Todd, and Murlene Wilkes. Wilkes is interesting because one of her employees came forward on the tip line and said Wilkes had been pressured by the governor’s office to deny Wootens workers comp claim, even though Wilkes denied it when questioned. They will find some way of getting Todd out of it. He’s a spouse, and they may use that “can’t testify against a spouse” rule. They’ll come up with something. All they have to do is delay it until after the election. Anyway, thanks for correcting me.

aaaagh! I could spit nails when I read this stuff.

AKM, I love you and this blog because truth is so freakin’ refreshing…your infusion of humor is appreciated. My husband, a former Republican now independent, is voting Obama/Biden with me this year (what?). His words, this year especially he has lost all respect for Repubs and will do anything in his power to assure Palin doesn’t reach VP. Voting Dem is huge for him…I’m saying he..has..never..voted…Dem. That’s how bad this smell is to him.

I watched Joe Biden’s speech yesterday, which was so Joe and so amazing. I felt good again and thought, what a good, honest, outstanding VP choice. Great person. Is it true Mr. Biden is the second poorest US Senator? Surprised I would not be.

I believe there are many others-non dems-who are repulsed and angry right now. And, I feel another donation to Obama/Biden campaign coming on.

It’s obvious that Sarah Palin is hiding a lot. It’s so insanely obvious. Did anyone else see the Todd Palin interviews on Fox News? He sounds like an uneducated idiot and he calls himself a “mud-monkey.” He reminds me of a guy I used to date — but dumped for being too stupid.

Also, why isn’t anyone stating the obvious: Sarah was pregnant with Track BEFORE they were married. Hence the elopement. I guess shotgun weddings run in the family. How disgusting for a so-called social conservative politician. They are just simple-minded hypocrites.

What was McCain thinking???? He didn’t vet her. He took a risky gamble. He ruined the lives of the Palin children. He sold out the GOP!

I was just watching the videos. I agree about Todd. And he kept talking about the opportunity to visit all the states during the campaign as an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. At least Obama lived and travelled all over the US and the rest of the world. I could go on! I also think Sarah was pregnant with Track which is why they eloped. When Colberg says “This is an untenable position for our clients” I thought as Attorney General that his client was the State of Alaska, not Palin’s staff?

Sadly, with this move it looks to me like there will be no resolution aside from the court of public opinion. There could be contempt charges brought up, but if it’s coming from the legislature I don’t know if there is the political will to get it done. Maybe the existing Branchflower report can be released (or leaked?) as it appears to contain a significant amount of information already.

the republicans control the alaskan legislature….the committee that released the supoeanas is 3-2 republican

independents arent going to buy any of this, and they will see this as reflective of what the bush administration has done for the past 8 years.

http://www.usnews.com/articles/opinion/2008/09/09/5-poorest-us-senators.html

While the information is incaccurate, innocently culled from an opinon piece, it’s also inaccurate to say that Santorum and Frist left the Senate “YEARS ago.” January 2007. Twenty months ago.

Well, now we know why Ms. Palin “didn’t even blink” when she was chosen as Mc Elderly’s running “soulmate”. And I have nothing against senior citizens( I am one), but 72 year old men with really poor health histories have no business being POTUS.

Woke up here in NYC to the sounds of more corporate welfare — AIG bailout — guess my grandchildren will “share” in the profits of that one, TOO. Am I nuts or is simply everything spinning out of control — I always knew these policies of un-trammeled corporate welfare would come to a head, the timing is impeccable, but the workout is NOT (and I work on Wall St.). OK, $$ rant over.
“Republicans privatize the profits and socialize the losses” — great line.

Thank you, thank you AKM for being a voice of sanity and courtesy in the political blogging-world — I’m gobsmacked by the latest Repubs suing Repubs to avoid whatever-the-heck it is she’s dodging! Doing everything I can here in the East to keep focusing attention on Palin/Alaska/Troopergate/Ethics Investigation — writing letters to the editor, using feedback pages for every newspaper/website I can think of (my lunch hour and non-working hours are pretty busy). AND donating to Obama/Biden 2008.Keep it up, keep it up!!

Palin is pretty short sided. If McCain loses the election, which seems likely, she will have to answer for these shenanigans. Her time in the spotlight is fading and she probably won’t have a career after this incident. No not the firing of the trooper/safety guy, the slandering of fellow politicians and good public servants in the process of attempting to shield herself.

We all need to get out, knock on doors and help enlighten people to the situation. Everyone needs to fan out into swing states and make a difference. Imagine waking up the day after the election and thinking ‘I could’ve done more’…that would suck.

What the f#%@ is going on here. In the Nixon years it was not the crime that brought the President and finally the Nation down, it was the cover up. Are we that stupid not to call her and the McSame campaign on this. I am tired of the lies and smears. I guess they think that is business usual as in Alaska. A word of caution that the bloom may not be as wilted as perceived. Down here in Florida there are many regular folks who have latched on to Gov. Palin and who do not care about details, the blogosphere or the MSM. We all have a tendency to gravitate to blogs and sites that tend to promote or support our own personal beliefs or feelings – but then our sense of reality becomes distorted because we become part of that proverbial choir being preached to and we lose sight of the big picture. I offer the following as an example why the bloom may not be as wilted as perceived (with the caveat that I believe the polls this year are going to be notoriously wrong in many places) – one of the leading stories yesterday in the local and regional press here in Florida was about Sen. McCain’s lead in the Florida polls widening and rumors that Sen. Obama may pull his resources out of Florida in order to focus on more winnable battle ground states. Based on casual conversations with local folks here in Fort Pierce/Port St. Lucie I can believe the polls. (The population here is a mix of multi-generational Floridian ranchers, southern blacks, central american hispanics, and the largest population of New York/New Jersey retirees and blue collar workers outside of New York and New Jersey – the last point is probably not true but it feels like it. The county, with a total population of approximately 280,000, voted for VP Gore and Sen. Kerry, but I would not be surprised to see it swing to Sen. McCain this year. Last tidbit, registered voters break down as follows: Dem. 64,000; Rep. 51,000; NPA, 27,000 – I think we represent a typical cross section of voters – a battle ground county in a battle ground state).

For the record, I support Sen. Obama. I also thoroughly enjoy and appreciate this blog – AKM, please keep up the good work.

P.S. AKM, I especially enjoy your insights as to how Alaskans think and why.

http://www.radaronline.com/exclusives/2008/09/sarah-palin-affair-national-enquirer.php

I am not suggesting there was an affair, I am just pointing out the relationship of the families.

“My sources in Alaska say the incident occurred in mid 1990s, right around the time she became mayor of Wasilla. Todd Palin’s partner in a Polaris snowmachine dealership in Wasilla, Brad Hanson, and Sarah were reportedly flirtatious and but never consummated the relationship.
When Todd found out, he reportedly dissolved the partnership and sold the dealership. Hampton is now a member of the Palmer City Council. He was married at the time of the reported flirtation.”

Ignoring subpoenas. How very American. Congress let the Bushies get away with it, so now everyone thinks it’s okay. Aren’t Repubs the “law and order” people?

What a scary country. We bill ourselves as a nation of laws that every citizen is subject to and brag that that is what sets us apart from other regimes–then allow selected individuals to be exempt from the laws, to be exempt even from attempts to see if they broke the law. This is a bad precedent. The Bush/Rove cabal is quite literally destroying the basis of our governing system.

Trooper Gate vs. Obama’s Logan Act Gate

Hmm… Let’s see how well the OMSM covers for for their chosen one.

17 09 2008
Laura

QUERY: Is there any speculation that what there is to be discovered in a Troopergate investigation is more damning than is generally considered? And if so, what might be hidden and come out beyond what we know.

BEST quote OF THE DAY
Carly Fiorina, spokesperson for McCain, was asked if she thought SWWNBN coudl run Hewlett-Packard (the company Fiorina headed and ran into the ground). She said No. Quickly, easily. BUT she clarified this wasn’t important; McCain couldn’t either!
She then goes on to explain why running a corporation is harder than running a superpower.
With friends like that……

Mary – oops. Just discovered you asked the same question I did, but much earlier. I obviously wondered the same thing ( for those who have trouble like me keeping up with all the great posts: what is there about Troopergate that we are missing that is what she is really hiding.)

17 09 2008
larina

Yes, Troopergate stinks to high heaven, and how all of this plays out makes her look guilty even if she isn’t–to those of us leaning Obama. Understand that people leaning McCain are cheering her on and see her as the victim in all this. It is important to get more than just Troopergate information out there. The more we focus on this unresolved concern, the less we are focusing on the issues or any of the other clearly documented evidence that shows that she is unsuitable for the VP and that McCain is unsuitable to be president. Personally, I think that’s what the GOP is counting on. There is other information out there that the GOP doesn’t want the public to see and our attention is turned far from that as we focus on Troopergate–a situation that is honestly viewed from two completely different perspectives.

Understanding Palin’s record of “executive experience” and how that includes appointing clearly unqualified people to positions of power and influence, keeping the money for one bridge to nowhere while simultaneously funding another that benefits her more personally, cutting funding to projects like the Special Olympics and calling them “pork,” and advocating for radical ideas that have more to do with her religion than they do any basis in best practices–these are the things we need to give more attention to. Not to mention McCain’s record of voting against veterans and for corporations, the number of lobbyists on his staff, his view that community colleges will put America right back in the running for innovation and technology (see Science Debate 2008).

I worry that the farther from the issue we get and the more we harp on this, as important as it is, the more ground we’ll lose. We HAVE to elect Barack Obama. I know this on a gut level. To do that, we have to know about and spread the word about a lot more than Troopergate because the far right is using our passion on this subject to their advantage.

17 09 2008
coyotechaser

Its time to sit the candidates down and to have some serious debates. Palin would wilt next to Biden or Obama simply because she doesn’t have the range of experience or the critical thinking skills she needs to stand out.
I’m all for a woman VP, but not this one.
I’m embarrassed as a US citizen that our government has been allowed to run amok for so long. As someone mentioned on an earlier post, we are at least in part responsible for this. We allowed our government to get out of hand.

17 09 2008
Kim in Florida

I agree with the poster who thinks his (or her) head will explode at any moment each day I come to check this site and find more disturbing news. I haven’t slept well now in 2 days! Last night, while tossing and turning, I came up with a Plan B if the unthinkable happens and They Who Must Not Be Named steal the White House (pause while I shudder uncontrollably and consider slitting wrists). Ok, must be strong.

Plan B is that someone lures SP over the Bridge to Nowhere and then blows up the bridge behind them leaving her there with some mooseburgers and binoculars. She could be our spy on the Russians. Then, we secretly transplant Tina Fey in the White House where she can act as a subversive and put some sand in the gears of the McBush administration.

If Plan B fails, I have Plan C. I will build a raft out of Igloo coolers and pool floats; it is only 90 miles from Key West to Cuba. After stopping off for one last Rum Runner, I could make my way to Cuba. Man-eating sharks and a fascist dictator don’t scare me, after all, I survived the Bush administration (albeit bankrupt but alive). Keep up the great work and spread the word folks. If I have guys in dark suits with glasses knocking at my door after posting my daydreams here, I will be reassured to know they read this and are afraid of what we are saying about them and I will be at peace LOL🙂

laura: i had read (online) that part of the emails that are part of this investigation revealed that in an ivy frye (state employee) exchange with frank bailey contained remarks that she was driving the palin children to school. she has been referred to as ‘the babysitter’. she is a state employee making $68,000+. i’m sure she isn’t the only state employee doing personal work on state time for the governor and shadow governor.

Things are sure getting messy, looks like Washington Mutual is about to be seized by the feds. Funny how the free market (with no regulation) is the be all and end all until they start losing money then they run whinning to the government to save them.
Seriously if they could have they would have held their finger in the dam until after the election, I have seen it happen before. In my business every economic downturn is noticable. Makes me wonder what they are still hiding and how bad it really is.
This thing with Sara is silly, here they are claiming to be reformers with impecable integrity yet they are stonewalling an investigation. The neo cons are going on about how it is all a political thing when it was going on before she was ever selected for VP. My opinion is if she has nothing to hide then she would cooperate. The fact that there is anyone out there that would still vote for this ticket given the information just shows me how dumbed down we have become.

It’s simple. If the Alaska Attorney general refuses to interview those involved in trooper gate, then the truth media can do it for them. This way Palin will be convicted in a court of public opinion which is far worse than anything she would endure in our flimsy legal system. It’s pretty simple, isn’t it? So let’s start the interviews. I’m sure some will flee the interview because they are guilty.

Now that is scary I always considered the Canadians to have more common sense than the US. Just my personal experience but you all tend to run your country way better than we ever dreamed of. Perhaps the west coast should just form it’s own country, you can rest assured that we will all go democrat which usually means we spend the next 4 years being punished for expressing our collective opinion. Reagan tried to sell off our power supply, log off and sell our national forest and bacsically devistated our economy unemployment during the Reagan years in Washington was something like 12%, Bush 2 let enron get away with rolling blackouts in California, messing with their economy, (and ours, 6 aluminum plants closed putting 4000 people out of work in one week). What I would like to know is why don’t some of the people actually involved with this fiasco, come forward with their story and talk to the press?
Just a couple of people who were there, who say “yea I e-mail gov’t business to a Palin’s personal account. Yea Todd Palin is at a lot of gov’t meetings and cc’d on documents or he isn’t. Yea I drove her kids school or no she never asked me to do that. There are more witnesses to this than just Monegan and Wooten. Please speak up and let us know this is not just a story without any roots flying through cyberspace. If Palin did nothing wrong, let the people know and most will move on. But if some of these allegations are true and she is able to hide them before she gets a hold of the real power and the real resources to smother story that come with executive privilege, beware!
Since the Alaskan AG refuses to do the will of the people, an independent panel she be put in place to investigate this claim. It is done all the time.

“There is a growing sense in the blogosphere, in local and national media, and among people I know, that the bloom is off the Palin rose.”

Yup, Yup, the bloom is off this rose. While they may be effective in halting
the investigation, it is and will continue to get coverage nationally. There
have been numerous articles explaining the issue in detail. I look to see
ads from 527’s and perhaps even the issue of transparency come up in the
debates.

She’s reaching the end of her fifteen minutes of fame and the focus is back on McCain. Carly Fiorina put her big foot in her bigger mouth yesterday and gave the Dems a freebie for advertising too! Gotta love the freebies!

McCain is now flip-flopping on deregulation and looking like the foolish
incompetent that he is. All signs say that the momentum is turning to Obama. Now, if the voters can get past Obama’s “exotic” (blackness) he should start to go back up in the polls and move some swing states to his column.

Living in a country that would put McCain in office because they still harbor
racial fears is embarassing and only makes our country look ridiculous.

Because Sarah Barracuda is a vindictive b!tch and they are afraid of what she will do to them if she comes back to Alaska to be their governor once again. The minimum that would happen would be for them to lose their jobs.

There are real solid ways to deal with a vindictive little bitch like Palin. Come at her with the full force of the truth. Katiebegood,

Would that be true even if she were no longer in power?
It makes me sad for the Alaskan people to think that. Has Alaskan politics always been like this.

From an earlier post:
Bettina,

This 8 yo Britta Hansen from Wasilla is a commissioner on the Palin state payroll?

http://www.servealaska.alaska.gov/commissioners.htm

Is Britta Hanson related to these Hansons from Wasilla?
I am not suggesting there was an affair, I am just asking about the relationship of the families.

If McCain wins this country is in for a whole lot of hurt. The problem I have with Republicans is they can never take responsibility for their actions. One of McCain’s financial adviser is Phil Gramm, the king of deregulation in the financial world (commercial banks, investment banks, insurance companies, securities firms). He introduced deregulation legislation to a Republican House and Senate in 1999-2000, that got passed. It opened the door to Wall Street corruption. Less than 48 hours ago McCain was saying “our economy is fundamentally strong” and now he’s taking a 180 that he will clean up Wall Street. Legislation he fundamentally approves of…. WHAT????? The problem is, unless you’re engaged and really want the truth, their lies and proganda may work. I just saw a McCain reformer ad here— and yes it says palin stopped the bridge to nowhere…. bold face lies that they stand behind. And behind closed doors their laughing at “we the people”, what idiots they say, so easy to manipulate. I wish people would get it that Obama truly wants to work for “we the people” and help rebuild the middle class, but alas, the rich may get four more years. Sorry to be such a downer.

Sarah Palin’s wasteful ways
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/09/17/palin_mayor/

According to Carney, Palin’s office makeover included flocked, red wallpaper. “It looked like a bordello.”

Although Carney says he no longer has documentation of the expenditures, in his recollection Palin paid for the office face-lift with money from a city highway fund that was used to plow snow, grade roads and fill potholes — essential municipal services, particularly in weather-battered Alaska.

Carney confronted Mayor Palin at a City Council hearing, and was shocked by her response.

“I braced her about it,” he said. “I told her it was against the law to make such a large expenditure without the council taking a vote. She said, ‘I’m the mayor, I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I can’t.'”

He “represents” them only in their capacity as agents of the State. The people of the State of Alaska are his freakin’ “clients” and somebody ought to explain that to the dimwit.

However, as I walked around my house in circles yesterday (like I had one foot nailed to the floor!) RANTING about ROVE and the like ignoring SUBPOENAS, my Republican husband reminded me that I shouldn’t be angry with Rove. I can’t argue with that.

So, should we be bombarding our state representatives and senators with e-mails and phone calls, demanding they “grow a pair”? and do their jobs? set and example for the Alaska legislature to follow?

Alaskans are so schizoprenic. On one hand, we crave recognition from “Outside” (yea, everyone is paying attention to us now!”); on the other, we vehemently resent interference from that same Outside (“how dare those flatlanders try to push us around?”). I hope that now the latter prevails, and the good people of Alaska, and our legislature, won’t stand for being pushed around by the national GOP. This is OUR business, buckos. @LetsGetReal – Come down off that ceiling. We have work to do!

The first task is finding something the average American DOES care about, and then you can lead them to the rest of this trash. The reality is if the American public does not care, we have to keep quietly stacking up the facts; identifying areas in which we can collectively identify with them, and then continually making the case in a language they can understand.

This week’s economic news is an eye-opener for many, and personally, I am much more willing to stay on task with Gramps for that than on SWSBN, if for no other reason, than I truly believe she will become a non-entity when faced with Congress. And it will make McCain a laughingstock amongst his peers, but that was his choice. IF THEY CAN MAKE IT TO ELECTION DAY.

Focus on the economy. Focus on that she grossly overstated her credentials as Energy Czarina and just ask the righties – “golly, I wonder what else she has overstated….?” Leave it at that. Focus on her cuting WIC out of the Alaska state budget for all women and children – and wonder innocently how that must feel to the rape victim, er mother, whose choice was to keep her baby. (I feel so base writing that.)

We can do this.

This is so true!
And the whole world is watching for many reasons. Most don’t want a leader who won’t blink while holding a twitching finger on the nucleeer button. It is easy to see from the outside looking in. The sin for all of us in this is if we don’t stand up and be heard. I’ve said this before, read They Thought They Were Free (how do you underline?) by Milton Mayer. It has changed my life! Ever wonder how the citizens of Germany 1933-1945 “let it happen“? Read the book and you will see how it parallels. We have to be heard, but we must stick to the facts. We must keep investigating the unknown and half-truths, but when we speak it must be factual in order to retain our credibility. Keep in mind while we are investigating, everything they have done so far has not made sense. The Troopergate stall could be no different(re: Poor Sarah is being picked on by everyone). Just like Germany 1933, ordinary citizens need to be heard. We are the ones who Has to make a difference.

Not Barack’s intellect, not empathy he shows for the less fortunate, not his good deeeds, not his work at bringing all walks of life together, not his dedication to those people on the Southside of Chicago, and to our Nation.

Are you kidding me!!! Do you really think this race would be as close as it is, with all that is going on…if Obama was white, and had the qualities I mentioned and so many more?

I ask you, how can we change the mind of people who have already decided?

Not that I won’t stop making calls, or register people to vote…I will continue to do my part. I just don’t get the hearts, and way of thinking of some people! I am glad I have the heart I have! I guess it’s the Libra in me!

Who does Colberg work for? The duties of the Attorney General of the State of Alaska are set forth in AS 44.23.020 and include the duty to represent the State, prosecute state laws and to render legal advice to all branches, including the legislature. In his most recent release, Colberg refers to the stonewalling witnesses as “our clients”. They can’t be his clients. He can’t choose to represent individuals against the legislature. At this point, I doubt recusing himself is sufficient. He should resign.

I’m confused.
Didn’t the Alaska Atty General pre-investigate the Troopergate for Pallin which
required the state to hire an outside investigator?
If so, then doesn’t this give the Atty General conflict of interest when telling the
gov’s staff not to testify? Shouldn’t the Atty General step aside in this matter?

Is there anyway that we can start a Recall process on her? I mean if she is trying to go for history here then we can give her history as the first Alaskan Governor to be recalled…

I am just so sick of her flip flopping ways and I cringed everytime I hear someone say they will vote for her because she is pretty. I mean we are talking about the Vice President position of the United States of America…not a high school prom…

I don’t get the whole 80% approval rating that they keep on boasting. Where is this? I mean I bet even in Wasilla she can’t get 80% !

Must be McCain’s wonderful statistics….he’s so good at everything that he can invent the Blackberry without even knowing what it is for…

Today, that state employees would refuse to honor subpoenas in the Gov. Palin abuse of power investigation is a huge 1-finger-salute to our judicial system. It’s another in-your-face example of the trickle-down-effect, or Monkey-See Monkey-Do phenomenon that started at the top of the chimp chain of command!

This is why we need role models. Good, honest, decent, trustworthy, fair, temperate, law-abiding, Constitutionally-oriented, sexually normal, tolerant, open-minded men & women as our Illustrious Leaders! Leaders who will Restore the Rule of Law, where no man is above it! Amen?!

Hmm… With regard to the AG’s statement and Palin’s “flip flop,” the more things change, the more they remain the same…

Maybe someone has already said this among the 200+ comments, but someone should remind the AG that the law isn’t what the governor says it is (“the governor has so strongly stated that the subpoenas issued by your committee are of questionable validity”). In fact, in most states (and likely in AK until now), one primary duty of the AG is to provide opinions to the executive branch as to the AG’s interpretation of the law. The AG’s abdication of that role here is really frightening.

Bettina-

Britta Hanson’s Dad (A different valley Hanson) was not Todd’s partner, her Dad is a democrat and a Lutheran pastor so i think you have your sources mixed up. As far as i know they are supporting Obama so don’t jump to conclusions.
