A Letter About Sarah Palin from Anne Kilkenny

4 09 2008

This letter has been circulating for a couple days now, and I thought I’d post it in full for those who haven’t had a chance to read it. One of the best ways to become informed about local politics is by attending city council/assembly meetings. I know this from mind-numbing, clock-staring, experience. There’s no substitute for butt-in-the-chair observation, no matter how awful it is to sit for hours on end listening to a bunch of bloviating local politicians. But it’s difficult not to show who you are.

This letter is written by someone who knows Sarah Palin, lives in Wasilla, and has city council lurker cred. (There ought to be a badge for that.) I think that babygate is on the way out of the news cycle, and the next aspect of her life to come under scrutiny will be her tenure as mayor. This is a good place to start. And thanks to Anne Kilkenny for speaking out. Wasilla is a small town. It takes a certain amount of conviction and downright bravery to lay it all out there like this. So a hat tip and a big sweeping bow to Anne.

I am a resident of Wasilla, Alaska. I have known Sarah since 1992.
Everyone here knows Sarah, so it is nothing special to say we are on a
first-name basis. Our children have attended the same schools. Her
father was my child’s favorite substitute teacher. I also am on a
first name basis with her parents and mother-in-law. I attended more
City Council meetings during her administration than about 99% of the
residents of the city.

She is enormously popular; in every way she’s like the most popular
girl in middle school. Even men who think she is a poor choice and
won’t vote for her can’t quit smiling when talking about her because
she is a “babe”.

It is astonishing and almost scary how well she can keep a secret. She
kept her most recent pregnancy a secret from her children and parents
for seven months.

She is “pro-life”. She recently gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby.
There is no cover-up involved, here; Trig is her baby.

She is energetic and hardworking. She regularly worked out at the gym.

She is savvy. She doesn’t take positions; she just “puts things out
there” and if they prove to be popular, then she takes credit.

Her husband works a union job on the North Slope for BP and is a
champion snowmobile racer. Todd Palin’s kind of job is highly
sought-after because of the schedule and high pay. He arranges his
work schedule so he can fish for salmon in Bristol Bay for a month or
so in summer, but by no stretch of the imagination is fishing their
major source of income. Nor has her life-style ever been anything
like that of native Alaskans.

Sarah and her whole family are avid hunters.

She’s smart.

Her experience is as mayor of a city with a population of about 5,000
(at the time), and less than 2 years as governor of a state with about
670,000 residents.

During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running
this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been
pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had
gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had
given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6
years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over
33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the
City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation
(1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a
regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she
promoted benefited large corporate property owners way more than they
benefited residents.

The huge increases in tax revenues during her mayoral administration
weren’t enough to fund everything on her wish list though, borrowed
money was needed, too. She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it
with indebtedness of over $22 million. What did Mayor Palin encourage
the voters to borrow money for? Was it the infrastructure that she said
she supported? The sewage treatment plant that the city lacked? or a
new library? No. $1m for a park. $15m-plus for construction of a
multi-use sports complex which she rushed through to build on a piece
of property that the City didn’t even have clear title to, that was
still in litigation 7 yrs later–to the delight of the lawyers
involved! The sports complex itself is a nice addition to the
community but a huge money pit, not the profit-generator she claimed it
would be. She also supported bonds for $5.5m for road projects that
could have been done in 5-7 yrs without any borrowing.

While Mayor, City Hall was extensively remodeled and her office
redecorated more than once.

These are small numbers, but Wasilla is a very small city.

As an oil producer, the high price of oil has created a budget surplus
in Alaska. Rather than invest this surplus in technology that will
make us energy independent and increase efficiency, as Governor she
proposed distribution of this surplus to every individual in the state.

In this time of record state revenues and budget surpluses, she
recommended that the state borrow/bond for road projects, even while
she proposed distribution of surplus state revenues: spend today’s
surplus, borrow for needs.

She’s not very tolerant of divergent opinions or open to outside ideas
or compromise. As Mayor, she fought ideas that weren’t generated by
her or her staff. Ideas weren’t evaluated on their merits, but on the
basis of who proposed them.

While Sarah was Mayor of Wasilla she tried to fire our highly respected
City Librarian because the Librarian refused to consider removing from
the library some books that Sarah wanted removed. City residents
rallied to the defense of the City Librarian and against Palin’s
attempt at out-and-out censorship, so Palin backed down and withdrew
her termination letter. People who fought her attempt to oust the
Librarian are on her enemies list to this day.

Sarah complained about the “old boy’s club” when she first ran for
Mayor, so what did she bring Wasilla? A new set of “old boys”. Palin
fired most of the experienced staff she inherited. At the City and as
Governor she hired or elevated new, inexperienced, obscure people,
creating a staff totally dependent on her for their jobs and eternally
grateful and fiercely loyal–loyal to the point of abusing their power
to further her personal agenda, as she has acknowledged happened in the
case of pressuring the State’s top cop (see below).

As Mayor, Sarah fired Wasilla’s Police Chief because he “intimidated”
her, she told the press. As Governor, her recent firing of Alaska’s top
cop has the ring of familiarity about it. He served at her pleasure
and she had every legal right to fire him, but it’s pretty clear that
an important factor in her decision to fire him was because he wouldn’t
fire her sister’s ex-husband, a State Trooper. Under investigation
for abuse of power, she has had to admit that more than 2 dozen
contacts were made between her staff and family to the person that she
later fired, pressuring him to fire her ex-brother-in-law. She tried to
replace the man she fired with a man who she knew had been reprimanded
for sexual harassment; when this caused a public furor, she withdrew
her support.

She has bitten the hand of every person who extended theirs to her in
help. The City Council person who personally escorted her around town
introducing her to voters when she first ran for Wasilla City Council
became one of her first targets when she was later elected Mayor. She
abruptly fired her loyal City Administrator; even people who didn’t
like the guy were stunned by this ruthlessness.

Fear of retribution has kept all of these people from saying anything
publicly about her.

When then-Governor Murkowski was handing out political plums, Sarah got
the best, Chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission: one
of the few jobs not in Juneau and one of the best paid. She had no
background in oil & gas issues. Within months of scoring this great
job which paid $122,400/yr, she was complaining in the press about the
high salary. I was told that she hated that job: the commute, the
structured hours, the work. Sarah became aware that a member of this
Commission (who was also the State Chair of the Republican Party)
engaged in unethical behavior on the job. In a gutsy move which some
undoubtedly cautioned her could be political suicide, Sarah solved all
her problems in one fell swoop: got out of the job she hated and
garnered gobs of media attention as the patron saint of ethics and as a
gutsy fighter against the “old boys’ club” when she dramatically quit,
exposing this man’s ethics violations (for which he was fined).

As Mayor, she had her hand stuck out as far as anyone for pork from
Senator Ted Stevens. Lately, she has castigated his pork-barrel
politics and publicly humiliated him. She only opposed the “bridge to
nowhere” after it became clear that it would be unwise not to.

As Governor, she gave the Legislature no direction and budget
guidelines, then made a big grandstand display of line-item vetoing
projects, calling them pork. Public outcry and further legislative
action restored most of these projects–which had been vetoed simply
because she was not aware of their importance–but with the unobservant
she had gained a reputation as “anti-pork”.

She is solidly Republican: no political maverick. The State party
leaders hate her because she has bit them in the back and humiliated
them. Other members of the party object to her self-description as a
fiscal conservative.

Around Wasilla there are people who went to high school with Sarah.
They call her “Sarah Barracuda” because of her unbridled ambition and
predatory ruthlessness. Before she became so powerful, very ugly
stories circulated around town about shenanigans she pulled to be made
point guard on the high school basketball team. When Sarah’s
mother-in-law, a highly respected member of the community and
experienced manager, ran for Mayor, Sarah refused to endorse her.

As Governor, she stepped outside of the box and put together of package
of legislation known as “AGIA” that forced the oil companies to march
to the beat of her drum.

Like most Alaskans, she favors drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge. She has questioned if the loss of sea ice is linked to
global warming. She campaigned “as a private citizen” against a state
initiaitive that would have either a) protected salmon streams from
pollution from mines, or b) tied up in the courts all mining in the
state (depending on who you listen to). She has pushed the State’s
lawsuit against the Dept. of the Interior’s decision to list polar
bears as threatened species.

McCain is the oldest person to ever run for President; Sarah will be a
heartbeat away from being President.

There has to be literally millions of Americans who are more
knowledgeable and experienced than she.

However, there’s a lot of people who have underestimated her and are
regretting it.

CLAIM VS FACT
•“Hockey mom”: true for a few years
•“PTA mom”: true years ago when her first-born was in elementary
school, not since
•“NRA supporter”: absolutely true
•social conservative: mixed. Opposes gay marriage, BUT vetoed a bill
that would have denied benefits to employees in same-sex relationships
(said she did this because it was unconsitutional).
•pro-creationism: mixed. Supports it, BUT did nothing as Governor to
promote it.
•“Pro-life”: mixed. Knowingly gave birth to a Down’s syndrome baby
BUT declined to call a special legislative session on some pro-life
legislation
•“Experienced”: Some high schools have more students than Wasilla has
residents. Many cities have more residents than the state of Alaska.
No legislative experience other than City Council. Little hands-on
supervisory or managerial experience; needed help of a city
administrator to run town of about 5,000.
•political maverick: not at all
•gutsy: absolutely!
•open & transparent: ??? Good at keeping secrets. Not good at
explaining actions.
•has a developed philosophy of public policy: no
•”a Greenie”: no. Turned Wasilla into a wasteland of big box stores
and disconnected parking lots. Is pro-drilling off-shore and in ANWR.
•fiscal conservative: not by my definition!
•pro-infrastructure: No. Promoted a sports complex and park in a city
without a sewage treatment plant or storm drainage system. Built
streets to early 20th century standards.
•pro-tax relief: Lowered taxes for businesses, increased tax burden on
residents
•pro-small government: No. Oversaw greatest expansion of city
government in Wasilla’s history.
•pro-labor/pro-union. No. Just because her husband works union
doesn’t make her pro-labor. I have seen nothing to support any claim
that she is pro-labor/pro-union.

WHY AM I WRITING THIS?

First, I have long believed in the importance of being an informed
voter. I am a voter registrar. For 10 years I put on student voting
programs in the schools. If you google my name (Anne Kilkenny +
Alaska), you will find references to my participation in local
government, education, and PTA/parent organizations.

Secondly, I’ve always operated in the belief that “Bad things happen
when good people stay silent”. Few people know as much as I do because
few have gone to as many City Council meetings.

Third, I am just a housewife. I don’t have a job she can bump me out
of. I don’t belong to any organization that she can hurt. But, I am no
fool; she is immensely popular here, and it is likely that this will
cost me somehow in the future: that’s life.

Fourth, she has hated me since back in 1996, when I was one of the 100
or so people who rallied to support the City Librarian against Sarah’s
attempt at censorship.

Fifth, I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to
say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.

CAVEATS
I am not a statistician. I developed the numbers for the increase in
spending & taxation 2 years ago (when Palin was running for Governor)
from information supplied to me by the Finance Director of the City of
Wasilla, and I can’t recall exactly what I adjusted for: did I adjust
for inflation? for population increases? Right now, it is impossible
for a private person to get any info out of City Hall–they are
swamped. So I can’t verify my numbers.

You may have noticed that there are various numbers circulating for the
population of Wasilla, ranging from my “about 5,000″, up to 9,000. The
day Palin’s selection was announced a city official told me that the
current population is about 7,000. The official 2000 census count was
5,460. I have used about 5,000 because Palin was Mayor from 1996 to
2002, and the city was growing rapidly in the mid-90’s.

From the Associated Press:

“….Sarah Palin on Thursday blamed supporters of the Democratic presidential ticket for spreading “misinformation and flat-out lies”

When we criticize Sarah Palin, her lack of qualifications and her checkered past as a politician, we do so neither as Republicans, nor as Democrats.
We do so as Americans

I’d love to hear Sarah or anyone else for that matter clear up the “misinformation and flat-out lies”.

Palin isn’t a witch, a personification of all things evil. But she sure as hell isn’t someone I want to see a heartbeat away from the presidency. It makes me vaguely sick to my stomach.

This is an absolutely devastating indictment against Palin’s fitness to be VP. Thanks, Anne.

But there’s something we all have to know: what books did Sarah try to ban/censor?

So, ask Anne why a girl would spend 5 to 8 months “out of school with mono”? I thought mono as the fashionable disease went out with the 80’s (as did Sarah’s hairstyle).

Nothing makes me believe the Babygate rumor more than a teenage girl out of school for 6 months. No mention of home schooling; a mention of “transfer to Anchorage” but nothing to back that up, except a car accident in Wasilla.

And why won’t they release the simple documents that settle the case – Sarah’s medical records, amnio test, birth certificate, etc. ? Hasn’t every other candidate opened their medical records? Don’t tell me McCain’s boys didn’t ask to see the medical records as part of the vetting process?

I see Obama is on track to get $10 in donations since Palin’s speech.

A lot is being made of her experience vs Obama and Biden (executive experience).

As a 40 year veteran of leadership in large organizations, a consultant to organizations and leaders, and a prolific writer of essays about leadership, I feel like I am living in the midst of insanity (cognative dissonance) when people, intelligent people, buy her experience argument.

First of all experience is different from intellect and wisdom.

Also leading a city of 5,000 is so small scale, calls on so few executive skills, and she appears to have mishandled the supervison and fiscal responsibilities that she did have. She hasn’t been governor long enough to have learned how to be governor.

Anyway, more detailed information is needed to flesh out the “experience” argument.

This letter is excellent and sounds sincere.

This is what made me so angry during her diatribe last night. This scandal-ridden political lightweight had the audacity to demean Obama and Biden with all of these skeletons in her closet. Family issues aside, she is wholly unqualified to hold national office. She’s hired lobbyists, ran up her city’s debt, worked for Ted Steven’s 527 group, fired people for political/personal purposes and has lied about her support of the Bridge to Nowhere. Where is the evidence of being a reformer?

And I was truly disgusted with how she had her daughter’s babydaddy up there on that stage for a photo op. His parents shouldn’t even have allowed him to be exploited like that. Teen pregnancy happens often, and it’s nothing to be celebrated. She shouldn’t score any points for supporting her daughter which is what any loving mother would do at this time. If anything she should have declined the VP nomination to spare her daughter this scrutiny.

Here’s a video/message from the Obama campaign:

Why would the Republicans spend a whole night of their convention attacking ordinary people?

With the nation watching, the Republicans mocked, dismissed, and actually laughed out loud at Americans who engage in community service and organizing.

Our convention was different. We gave the stage to everyday Americans who hunger for change and stepped up to make phone calls, knock on doors, and raise money in small amounts in their communities.

You may have missed it, but we also showed the country a video with the faces and voices of those organizers, volunteers, and donors from every corner of the country.

Watch the video and make a donation of $100 or more now to show that in this election, ordinary people will make their voices heard.

Thank you akmuckraker for posting this on the front page. I had seen it a couple of days ago as a comment in one of the other posts. And then I have seen it spread all over the intertubes in various forms. But I appreciate seeing it here in its entirety, with the full name and permission of the author.

And thank you Anne for being so thorough and honest and forthright. It takes a lot of courage to do what you did and it is much appreciated.

With her pick announcement coming out of the blue, it’s been hard to put together a compilation of facts about her record. And this is excellent. As much as I got caught up in all the salacious babygate gossip, it’s her record and style of governing experience that we need to be informed about.

The web of lies, misleading bits and pieces, and fabricated sound bites is nauseating. And for days now, her life has been mysteriously yanked from online public records into that vault of secrecy that Karl Rove is famous for.

I applaud you both!

I am VERY curious about which books were so objectionable that the mayor had to get involved personally in trying to run the library.

True, trying to get the Wasilla librarian to take books off the shelf can be cited as decisive executive action on Mayor Palin’s part.

But my goodness, to then FIRE the poor librarian over it?

I guess the “reading them their rights” line last night showcases her experience in fighting terrorist librarians-

America, you cannot say that we were not warned.

Please get out and vote. Frozen in fear in not an option this time around.

I just donated again to Obama, and then read this in the NY Times:

“Senator Barack Obama’s presidential campaign is reporting that it has taken in $8 million over the Internet since Mrs. Palin’s speech, in which she tore into Mr. Obama. By Thursday afternoon, more than 130,000 donors had kicked in, and the Obama campaign is on pace to collect $10 million by the time Senator John McCain takes the stage tonight.”

Woohoo, keep it coming!

I believe the Country should learn more about Wasilla’s actual governance during Palin’s two terms as Mayor.

Read a key quote from Anne’s letter:

“During her mayoral administration most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.”

Another task for the Mudflats blogger.

The scary thing is that she will campaign this weekend with McCain, and then she will return to AK and be put into hiding until her next scripted appearance. The neo-cons really don’t feel that they have to cater to the requests of the media and the public by putting her in front of the cameras in unscripted interviews.

The public must demand that she appear, and the media must be relentless in their pursuit of getting her in front of the camera. If this doesn’t happen, Palin will make sporadic stump appearances based on teleprompted speeches and then pop up at the debate.

Obama will be on O’Rielly in 30 mins.

Thank you, gutsy Anne. Book burners and banners scare the hell out of me.

Obama has asked the following question of Governor Palin.

Basically, he’s wondering what her problem is with the media scrutiny.

He’s been under media scrutiny for the past 20 months. She’s been scrutinized by the media for FOUR DAYS.

What is her problem?????

Did she think we would all take her word for everything? We have been lied to for eight years. No more, thank you.

How did we get to this place in America? I guess people need to get their heads out of the sand (or whatever) and get involved in their government and country. It is our faults that we have allowed bloodsucking vampires to take over our lives. I hope that this election of 2008 is an example for all of us to really start caring about something beyond ourselves. With regard to SP asking how she could get some books banned from the library: It really doesn’t matter what books and if there WAS a LIST.

What is important is that she wanted to know how to get it done. The action could apply to any book she deemed inappropriate that was on a list or wasn’t on a list; now or in the future.

It’s enough that she wanted to know how to do it. And many kudos to the brave librarian who stood her ground against the nazi-esque mind-set that would want to limit speech.

The other side has swallowed the Kool-Aid hook, line and sinker. Palin has positioned herself to be nearly criticism-proof. I know I will be asking Jesus to ‘make a way’ myself, although I won’t be reading the prayer from a teleprompter.

I agree banning books are bad regardless of the title. But I still think it is of interest to get to know the titles for a couple of reasons: 1. It gives more credibility to the story if there’s more information. 2. The titles can also give an insight to here thinking. Is it books on evolution or politics or fiction?

Thanks Anne for speaking out – I can’t imagine in a small town that you won’t get ‘flak’ for it, but thanks for being courageous enough to go ahead anyway.

You were critical of Palin without being vindictive and gossipy – a fine line to travel – and one which you haven’t crossed to the ‘dark side’ in any way. I’m sure that Sarah Palin in person is as nice as the next person, but the next person isn’t going to be a potential Leader of the Free World any time soon….

I hope the MSM takes up this issue.

Sadly, judging from the coverage today, they’re too self-absorbed, still licking thier wounds from the ‘nasty, sexist, media…BAD” trick the GOP has played.

Sometimes they get too caught up in their own reflection – so we’ll keep reminding them that the news isn’t always about them and their reputation.

I live in Minnesota. Not too long ago, our esteemed Governor was Jesse “The Body” Ventura, the former TV wrestler. I’m still embarrassed about it. And now, Al Franken the standup comedian is running for US Senator in our state… another long story.

But Ventura and his wife also have a special-needs child. I wonder if he would have accepted the VP nod as quickly as Palin.

Thank you for your incredible bravery, Anne! You have so very capably and detailedly put together facts that should be read by every American. As a long-time resident of Phoenix, I have never voted for John McCain for many reasons (e.g., hotheadedness, lack of logical reasoning with regards to decision-making, not up on issues) and, after his pathetic nomination of SP, I must put “loss of any rational thought” at the top of the “reasons never to vote for John McCain” list. It should scare everyone that SP is a pathological liar aside from being sanctimonious, ill-educated, narrow-minded, ad infinitum.

Anne and some other folks from Alaska just state flatly that Trig is Sarah’s baby. I’d really like to know whether they’re saying that no one in Alaska questioned it at the time, or they have some reason to believe that it’s true. Because, honestly, I find it totally unbelievable that a woman could hide her fifth pregnancy into the seventh month.

Or that any rational person (let alone responsible or caring person) would get on a plane when she was going into premature labor with a Down syndrome child. The only explanation that makes any sense to me is that you can change the parents’ names on an adopted child’s birth certificate, but it still has to be issued where the child is born. And if the “mother” is thousands of miles away when the child is born, it looks a bit suspicious.

Dear Anne: Your letter is fascinating!

Please tell us more about the Library controversy – I think that is an important untold story about upholding the Constitution and Freedom of Speech.

I used to work in the public library in Chattanooga, TN, which is like the buckle of the Bible Belt. Not a week went by when someone didn’t ask us to remove either a book of photography or a novel that offended them, and the unequivocal answer was always “NO.” We thought of such people as the lunatic fringe of society.

All the Librarians I know are anti-censorship of any kind, and so is the American Library Association. A story about book-banning always gets alot of interest, so a list of the books involved would be so interesting!!! I wonder if Palin actually read any of them, or if she just took someone’s word that they were “bad”?

If you consider the typical qualities that Republicans look for in a VP (think Dick Cheney) Sarah could have used Anne Kilkenny’s letter as a resume. It would have got her the job.

I think Palin’s speech was amasing and great. Where as the speeches by the dems were flat, typical and lacked passion. As far as that case involving her brother-law I think people are forgeting that he was threating her family. As for foreign policy experience and knowledge she has more in her little finger in her two years as governor.Than Barak Obama has in his whole hand in his 3 years as senator.

Just a thought...

Reading Anne’s letter reminds me of a great book, Shrub: The Short But Happy Political Life of George W. Bush, Molly Ivins with Lou Dubose (Random House, 2000).

In a nutshell, the premise of the book is folks don’t change their stripes, so the best way to know someone is to look at their history. And what W did in to the U.S. is exactly what he had previously done in business and to Texas.

Just a thought..

I forgot to say I support Anne Kilkenny (I think, read her letter and it sounds sincere) — since McCain’s introduction included Palin’s role as a point guard, I was led to discover that she had hit the free throw in the state championship! with a stress fracture. This is a HUGE accomplishment in the world I live in. If there were shenanigans, all bets are off. IF — just give me something to keep these girls on the path of integrity.

What is truly SCARY is to see the liberal MSM and the left wing bloggers latch on to this tripe that is not based on fact.

HardWorkingWoman

You all just don’t get it do you? This woman Anne Kilkenny is just another of the do-nothing, go-no-where, worthless, sniveling, can’t-stand-it-when-someone-else-does-something morons. This country is full of them. Its so much easier to sit in a chair behind a computer and eat bon bons all day and critique anyone who did something and got somewhere than to actually do something yourself. Its easier to put down someone else than to admit that YOU TOO could accomplish something if you had any guts or work ethic.

I have raised two children who are now wonderful adults with the help of a hard-working spouse while successfully running two businesses non-stop. I routinely work 60 hours a week and still spend more time with my kids and family than most people I know. I have worked hard for all that I have, and I’ll be damned before I let a bunch of democrats take it all away as though they have some sort of god-given right to it.

I was taught by my steel union president father that an education and working hard were worth more than sitting around and taking pot-shots at anyone else… that mistakes are inevitable, pick yourself up and move on…. that if you want to get somthing done, work with someone who does things, not with someone who talks about doing things or what they could have done, if only…. My father worked 4 jobs to make sure we had an education and could live the American Dream.

I learned from my mother that I could be anything, do anything I wanted to do as long as I was willing to work hard for it and stay focused. My mother worked part-time, went back to college full-time, became a nurse, and still was the best mother I ever met. She studied and worked all night long while we slept so she could be with us when we were awake. She and my father expected us to help run the family and the household. We were not allowed to sit around and watch TV or to have the time to get in trouble. If ever we got in trouble, we got double the punishment at home as we did in school.

You Anne Kilkenny could not have survived a week in the life of one of my parents. You, Anne Kilkenny, do not have the guts to work hard and contribute to this country in a real way. You, Anne Kilkenny, have no right to judge anyone else who works for this country.

I’m proud of Sarah Palin. I’m so proud of Sarah Palin that I could bust. Before she was added to this ticket, I couldn’t bother to get interested in this presidential race. She brings such a breath of fresh air, so much real life experience, and has all the tenacity this country needs. I plan to vote for the first time in many years, thanks to Sarah Palin. I’ll give her any support I can. I only wish you were the presidential candidate and I live for the day I can vote for her to be president of this great country. (Thankfully Anne Kilkenny still won’t have gotten off her rear-end and gotten in the way.)

Thank you Anne! You gave an important perspective on Palin, knowing that you’d be attacked. I hope your letter gets wide circulation. Since the McCain campaign strategy seems to be to keep Palin from answering any legitimate questions from American citizens– not the media as they’re saying– we have to rely on information like this. Thanks again.

Are you serious??? these types of “letters” are the very smear jobs you all were in fits about when they circulated about Obama. You are all a bunch of sexist hypocrites. Have fun wallowing in your own self-pity when Obama gets trounced in the GE. Hey blog owner, how about a source for this “letter”? I guess you don’t mind being a propaganda tool for the Obama campaign. Funny how this letter was followed by the letter from “John Smith” whose biggest complaint is that Palin is a “redneck”. You all remind me of a bunch of wingnut republicans.

It’s a shame that you have to worry about how comments you make about a person professionally might later affect you personally. Why does it seem that politics attracts only the petty and greedy? Any elected official truly interested in the public’s well-being would be anxious to hear any and all related suggestions. Here’s my personal policy: I absolutely f’ing insist that you call me on any aspect of my thinking or behavior that you consider questionable. Why? Because I want to be better.

What world is it that you live in that an anecdote of questionable authenticity about an athletic achievement* years ago is not only worth mentioning, but would possibly have any effect on how you’d vote for president today?

*Stress fractures don’t necessarily hurt, which is why they often go unnoticed until a break occurs.

HardworkingWoman:

Sounds like you had your mother was MUCH more of a woman and a MOTHER than Sarah Palin could ever hope to be. Look at HER children, and then ask yourself where SHE was for them before you vote.

Also – somewhere I saw a transcript of a conversation between Sarah Palin and a state trooper when her sister’s ex-husband (of Troopergate) was apparently actively threatening her family – and when Sarah was at a neighbor’s house watching the goings on – she had to GO TO A MEETING SHE COULDN’T MISS, so she asked her neighbor to keep an eye on the situation. Wow … lots of domestic concern there.

Don’t delude yourself about this woman.

HardWorkingWoman: your hectic schedule has clearly caught up with you; get some sleep.
Your dad was right: education and hard work are, without a doubt, far more noble than “taking potshots.” Ms. Kilkenny’s aren’t potshots, though: these are facts with which she hopes to warn you about the GOP VP candidate. None of your criticism involves the substance of the letter, but is instead focused on your assumption that Just because she’s lucky enough to be in a position that she needn’t work, she couldn’t possibly have anything constructive to offer. Maybe Ms. Kilkenny couldn’t have survived week like you parents; who knows (you certainly don’t); but what does that have to do with her comments?
Your father worked 4 jobs? Maybe in his WHOLE LIFE! I mean, what did he need to do, beside preside over a steel union, so that you could afford to go to college? Every steel union I’ve ever been involved with offered a college tuition program. And even if one wasn’t available, if you’re qualified to enter college, certainly you’re qualified to fill out a student loan application.
Wait a minute…you’re…you’re a GOP speech-writer, aren’t you? Not a “hard-working woman…?” No one raised by such hard-working, thoughtful, ethical folk could POSSIBLY turn out to be such a narrow-minded blow-hard, right?! Or maybe you just need some sleep…

Sarah Palin is a non-entity. We have bigger issues to fight than Sarah Palin – let’s stay focused, people, and not waste our time on useless, personal attacks:

Last night, John McCain appealed to his audience to join him (well, actually he suggested we “fight, fight, fight…”) in the “fight” for America. On one of the threads yesterday, someone asked why we were so flipping mad at the Republican Party and the last 8 years of sorry management. I wrote back that we were losing our fundamental rights that were set forth at the birth of this nation. Here is another one – the loss of Habeus Corpus. This is the right to be innocent until proven guilty and not to be held without cause. You think our Revolutionary War ancestors know a thing or two about THAT treatment, eh?

Anyway, here are the salient points:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/15214437#15214437 – Keith explains it all in 2006

McCain voted FOR the abolishment of this consitutional right. Barack Obama (whom he subtly tried to slam over this in his speech last night) voted AGAINST. McCain threw the book at Barack over protecting our constitutional rights, and last night, you heard his sarcasm dripping when he spoke of this. THIS IS WHAT HE REALLY MEANS, FOLKS: http://www.earnedmedia.org/jmcc06184.htm

Who did the Supreme Court side with? THEY OVERTURNED BUSH AND MCCAIN (DO YOU REMEMBER THAT MCCAIN HAS VOTED WITH BUSH 90% OF THE TIME?): http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/06/12/boumediene/

WHY? BECAUSE OUR FOUNDING FATHERS (PATRIOTS ALL) WERE DOWNRIGHT SPECIFIC ON THIS ONE, AND THIS TIME ITS ALEX HAMILTON’S TURN:

“….the Court quoted Alexander Hamilton’s Federalist No. 84: “The practice of arbitrary imprisonments, in all ages, is the favorite and most formidable instruments of tyranny.”

So, when the Republican Party hobbles out the same, tired message in different packaging, ask yourself: DO I WANT MORE OF THE SAME? DO I WANT MY CONSITUTIONAL RIGHTS TO CONTINUE TO BE QUESTIONED AND TRAMPLED BY THIS SMALL GROUP OF TYRANNICAL POWERHUNGRY WAR THIRSTY BROOD? WOULD A BLOG LIKE THIS EVEN BE AVAILABLE TO US TO DISPUTE AND DISAGREE WITH ONE ANOTHER IF WE HAVE FOUR MORE YEARS OF THESE TYPES OF EXTREMISTS WHO WANT TO POLICE EVERYTHING WE DO?

Regardless of where you stand with Palin, read this. The contest is between Barack and McCain. Stay focused.

Way to go Anne!!! I don’t know you but I’m very, very proud of you. Hell, I’d vote for YOU as vice president!

The thing about Palin that sends chills up my spine is the fact that she tried to ban books and when that was unsuccessful tried to have the librarian fired.

Sarah Palin is NOT a non-entity. Yes – there are bigger issues to fight – but unfortunately people don’t vote on the issues. They vote on whether or not they like the pitbull with lips.

Hopefully the media will end up exposing SP for who she is, but in the meantime – any mind changed because of “useless personal attacks” is a good thing. How did the Dems get in this mess anyway? Wasn’t 2004 just a sad testament to the effectiveness of “useless personal attacks”.

I wish other people were as considerate for our country and would really tell the rest of America what Sarah Palin is really like and what she has done in Alaska.
I know we will NOT get the truth fro the GOP.
She has already lied to the American public on several of her issues, something I have come to expect from the GOP.

We really really need the truth about who she is and how she governs, the last time we elected a Governor with 6 years experience that turned out to be the WORST PRESIDENT EVER!!!!!!

God help this country if the McCain/Palin ticket wins in November.

Thank you Anne, for that letter. Down here in the ‘lower 48’, it seems too much of the mainstream media is loathe to do the investigative journalism they need to do. You know, critics of Obama chided his lack of experience, but he has had 18 months on the campaign trail, 18 months of people looking into his background, his qualifications, and almost 20 million people decided he’s worth being President and he won his party’s nomination. We the people don’t get that luxury for Palin. We only have 60 days until the election. 60 days to learn all we can about this woman who could be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. All this secrecy and shielding her from the media is wrong. I’ll give them that family is off limits (children, not necessarily spouses), but even with that, we still need to know about her. Her core beliefs, how she’s runs things. What she is in favor of or opposed to. And yes, how she treats those around her. As much as a McCain presidency scares me, the possiblity of a PALIN presidency is even more horrifying.

Please keep up the info, and everyone, please keep up the pressure on your media outlets to learn more about her.

P.S. Going on an Alaskan cruise next summer, can’t wait to see your beautiful state!

It is so scary that this person could be chosen for VP; and even scarier that McCain is so old that he will probably die in office and she could be president. I really hope the American public gets out to vote in November as it is critical that Obama wins this election!

a) so many people who have the legal right to cast a vote are so stupid as to read Anne’s entirely unsubstantiated post and assume that they’ve just read the truth, and

b) so many of the same people are so braindead that they can pretend to themselves that the mainstream media is not almost completely in the tank for Obama.

Innocent until proven guilty. There is no proof, only speculation and a lot of ego-centric people who couldn’t get their crybaby ways. As in any election, it is voting for the lesser of two evils. Obama/Biden is the greater of two evils. Obama wants the USA bowing down on prayer mats to Mecca several times a day. Read his book – Obama’s confessions are there. Dear Anne,

I thank you for your honesty and integrity. You have demonstrated that women are truly equal in their judgement and conviction and do not necessarily stand together for the sake of “our home team”!

Your letter has given me more hope that Ms Palin is exactly what I feared: poorly experienced, yet uses her power and charisma to intimidate people of the “small” town she totes as her pride and joy.

If you would be willing to come forward, you will have millions of women and men supporting and protecting you from backlash. You have not only spoken up against an unethical politician, but the entire Republican machine that has taken Sarah under their wings.

We can not afford another 4 years of this brutal ‘divide and conquer’ government and if McCain/Palin are elected, she will become our leader in a matter of years. Make no mistake, McCain has Melanoma. It is the deadliest form of cancer and there is ZERO “curative” treatment. Palliative (or symptom control) treatment is all that is available. And as much as every American respects Senator McCain for his years in Vietnam, he would not make a good short term President and Palin would be the ultimate demise of this country starting with our children, education, women & families.

I am a rarity among Washington journalists in that I have served in a state legislature. I know from my time in the West Virginia legislature that the challenges faced by reform-minded state representatives are no less, if indeed not more, formidable than those encountered in Congress.

Since most of Obama’s legislation was enacted in Illinois, most of the evidence is found there — and it has been largely ignored by the media in a kind of Washington snobbery that assumes state legislatures are not to be taken seriously.

Consider a bill into which Obama clearly put his heart and soul.

Obama proposed requiring that interrogations and confessions be videotaped.

He had his work cut out for him.

Obama proved persuasive enough that the bill passed both houses of the legislature, the Senate by an incredible 35 to 0. Then he talked Blagojevich into signing the bill, making Illinois the first state to require such videotaping.

Obama didn’t stop there. He played a major role in passing many other bills, including the state’s first earned-income tax credit to help the working poor and the first ethics and campaign finance law in 25 years (a law a Post story said made Illinois “one of the best in the nation on campaign finance disclosure”).
Obama’s commitment to ethics continued in the U.S. Senate, where he co-authored the new lobbying reform law that, among its hard-to-sell provisions, requires lawmakers to disclose the names of lobbyists who “bundle” contributions for them.

Taken together, these accomplishments demonstrate that Obama has what Dillard, the Republican state senator, calls a “unique” ability “to deal with extremely complex issues, to reach across the aisle and to deal with diverse people.

Obama’s campaign claim that he can persuade us to rise above what divides us is not just rhetoric.

I’ve tried to post this one on Huffo twice and its been deleted twice. I don’t know what is offensive about it but here it is any way.

Professional/legal experience: 4yrs Biden, 4yrs full-time and 8yrs part-time Obama,
County government experience: 2yrs Biden,
Federal legislative experience: 36yrs Biden, 4yrs Obama, 26yrs McCain.
TV reporter: 2yrs Palin,
Small business owner: 9yrs, includes part-time work Palin,
Municipal legislative experience: 4yrs Palin,
Municipal executive experience: 6yrs Palin,
State commission experience: 1yr Palin,
State executive experience: 2yrs Palin,
Community organizer: 3yrs Obama,
Teaching experience: 11yrs part time Obama,
State legislative experience: 8yrs Obama,
Military experience: 22yrs McCain.

Sourced from Politfact a non-partisan fact check site.

Gov Palin does have experience, but I don’t think it is the right kind of experience. Municiple experience is what she has most of, and frankly I don’t think that cuts the mustard.

To be fair, Fred Thompson pearl of wisdom “she has political and life experience” as an answer to why Palin is qualifed to be VP.

Thanks, Anne, for giving your view of the present political situation! I feel as if I’m living in a CARTOON…but I’m not laughing! I was hoping for someone who would unite all Americans and bring us to a point where we could work together and repair the damage that has been done over the last 8 years. Palin has no interest in uniting Americans…she is only interested in her own personal agenda. She is a divider…not a uniter. What a shame we have come to this point in our history.

5 09 2008

Last night John McCain suddenly appeared before a lime green screen. As the cameras pulled back we saw a huge white building surrounded by a grassy lawn. I thought maybe it was one of McCain’s 7 homes that he could not recall. My sister and I wondered about the building…not sure what it’s symbolism was. Well, today as I listened to NPR an explanation was offered. Across the top of the building was the name Walter Reed. OK, that makes sense considering how much was crammed down the throats of viewers last night about McCain’s military service. But, it turns out that the building was actually the Walter Reed Middle School in North Hollywood. The principle released a statement to the effect that permission had not been granted for use of the image and that its use in no way represented the views of the school. Someone teach McCain’s powerpoint guy how to Google for the correct image.
As for Palin’s “honesty”, why deceive the American public about your daughter’s pregnancy by hiding “the bump” behind her baby brother and his blanket? That child looked terrified the entire time she was on stage! Why would a Mother put their child through that humiliation? When the Palin’s have to return to Alaska in defeat the media will continue to watch and report on every minute event until the baby’s birth and beyond. Wonder if they can fetch a hefty payment from People Magazine for the “first” picture?
So Palin is an expert on foreign affairs because she runs the state closest to Russia. Well how many sit downs has she had with Putin in the last 2 years? For that matter, the governor of Florida is 90 miles from Cuba and the governor of New Mexico is a stone’s throw from Mexico where drug wars are spilling over into the US with nary a bit of media coverage.
McCain/Palin will not win the election this year because Americans are madder, more fed up and smarter this time around. McCain says he is breaking away from the Bush administration and yet when asked today about 84,000 lost jobs last month and a 6.1% unemployment rate his response was to continue with the (Bush) tax cuts and tax relief for corporations. Get real!!! The trickle down theory was disproved years ago.

5 09 2008

By the way. When the Republicans delayed their convention to make calls and ask for donations for the hurricane victims, were they talking about the current victims, the Katrina victims from 3 years ago or the Florida victims from 4 years ago who are still living in FEMA trailers. Wasn’t that under the watch of a Republican governor? Yeah right, compassionate conservatives………

Thanks for getting the truth out. The truth will always prosper, and lies will eventually be uncovered. There is no reason in the world that some of the good people in Alaska should be afraid of the “pittbull with lipstick.” If everyone who has been bitten by this vindictive creature bands together, I would say that now is the time to deal a needful blow. If everyone who has knowledge of her hypocrisy would speak out, then the country will not be taken on this horrific ride. Can you imagine the repressive-cloud hanging over the head of the entire country if this Trojan-horse is not exposed? No one stands to gain from the success of this sham. A heart-beat away from ledgendary vindicivness with unbridled power. No horror movie could touch this Orweillian nightmare.

I am so pleased to find this blog. I am a bit ashamed and must admit that my Obama-knees have buckled a bit with the appearance of Palin. However, as many of this blog’s participants have commented, Palin is indeed an actress in Mccain’s theatrical drama. The performances are so very transparent. I feel much better having visited this blog!

Anne Kilkenny’s letter confirms my impression (based on what I saw from her presence at the convention, the way she exposed her children and on what I read about the gates and that numerous small stories) that this Sarah P. has a downright narcissistic personality AND is openly acting that out in the grossest way. The fact that some people tend to see her as a kind of messiah only confirms this.

Not only Americans, we all felt the impact of 8 years of GWB’s administration. And now we face the serious threat of this ticket. You know, I don’t dare to rely on the common sense of the US people. Here in Europe we couldn’t imagine GWB would be chosen as president, let alone that he would even be re-elected.

I feel REALLY scared about this. As a world in crisis on all levels, we really can’t afford having this Republican duo in the WH.

At least you have your vote. We can’t do anything but watch this happen. And pray.. (being religious or not).

Dear Hardworkingwoman. I think you should thank Ms. Kilkenny for having this forum available to you to complain about the free speech included in this site. My suggestion is that you support your candidate but remember it is John McCain for President and not Sarah Palin. I think she has a future in politics even though I am completely and utterly against everything she stands for with the exception of the corruption in Washington. I guess the EBay story though cute was untrue. I don’t mind if people have a complete opposite opinion than mine – just tell the truth. Well, that’s one. Anyone who wants to banned books is a little freaky in my mind also.

Total Government Expenditures Increased 63 Percent Under Palin. In
fiscal 2003-the last fiscal year Palin approved the budget-the total
government expenditures of Wasilla, excluding capital outlays, were
$7,046,325. In fiscal 1996-the year before Palin took control of the
budget-the expenditures were $4,317,947. The increase was 63 percent.

Palin Supported Increasing Wasilla Sales Tax From 2 to 2.5 Percent
to Build $14.7 Million Sports Center. “Wasilla residents have given the
go ahead to building a new multiuse sports center in town and to
raising the city sales tax to pay for it. With the final votes counted
Friday, residents voted 306 to 286 in favor of a measure to raise the
city sales tax from 2 percent to 2.5 percent to pay the estimated $14.7
million cost of building the center…Mayor Sarah Palin, who supported
the measure, said the tight vote will motivate city officials to keep a
close eye on the budget for the center.” [Anchorage Daily News, 3/9/02]

Anyone paying attention to the ongoing McCain saga has heard that he really wanted Lieberman as VP. McCain the Maverick was pressured into selecting Palin by the RNC.

Now what did THEY (the RNC) see in Palin that we haven’t? Was it possibly the fact that she was a woman and Obama passed on Hillary?

It will be interesting to see how the next few weeks unravel in the Palan story. What else is “hiding” in her closet?

BTW – I am glad to see that most women are not taken in by this most transparent ploy to curry their favor.

How can people say they like her when we know NOTHING about her political intentions?
Her speech was bullshit. NOTHING about poverty. NOTHING about health care. NOTHING about the war, just generalizations to appeal to the republican base and typical right wing “god is on our side” nationalist bullshit and LIES about Obama’s tax plan.
They say Obama is just a celebrity, well what the hell do you call this woman? Certainly not an experienced and ethical politician.
Whether Anne’s figures are factual or not, Time Magazine reported the bit about Palin’s attempt to ban books at the Wasila Library. It’s been confirmed. She’s an Evangelical Fundamentalist Right-Wing Fascist, not unlike the current administration.
So she seems like a nice lady that you can relate to because she has a pretty family and would fit right in at your local country club? So what! That doesn’t make her qualified to be vice president or potentially president of the United States. You don’t vote for somebody because you would feel comfortable with them in your sewing circle or hunting lodge.

Let me straighten this out for the men who are reading, when a woman is jealous or has sour-grape-syndrome she calls the object of her hatred a bitch, and demeans her character. It is what the female of the species does, and this letter is no different. As a female, reading between the lines, she is furious about Palins “b abe” status, success, large family, cute hubby, position of power, and commendable actions in the face of having a special needs child. In other words, if she was a man she would be Keith Olberman.

I’ve seen a lot of Polititians come and go throughout my life time with a few good Presidents and Vice Presidents here and there. I was very young when General Isenhower was President but sence have learned he warned America and Americans about building the Military machine. He warned their would be wars if we continued on that path. Now McCain is no General and he can promote himself as a hero till hell freezes over but the only ones I call heros are the brave dead and wounded, not some twenty something hotshot who through his lack of intelligence destroyed four military jets in a few years and through his own stupidity ended up in a prison. What leadership has he ever shown. He was elected to congress through his wifes wealth. He lacks any vision except his wanting to fight anyone and to kill because life besides his own is worthless. Well, he isn’t going to get my grandsons to fight his wars. He has no v ision of world peace. He has no idea what it costs a family to live every week. He gets all of his medications for free why should he care about our healthcare. Now he picks a nobody from Alaska. If she were from any other community in the United States she would be the town joke! The reason why she won’t talk to reporters is because she doesn’t know what to say about the world. Her brain is empty! Senator Biden doesn’t have anything to worry about when it comes to debating her she is fair game. She can’t get away with whinning and claim sexisum., when she is on tape complaining about Senator Clinton doing the very same thing. Come on guys, do you really think for one second you can win? We want real change in this country and from someone who takes in the whole world vision not just America. The Republicans are a dead party!

Palin is an incredible woman, most of the comments I read so far are people who are looking for an excuse to vent their fears and anger that a woman can burst the bubble obama enjoyed for almost 19 months. Governor Palin came to the scene and neutralize obama in less than one week. Wow. you can say all you can but, the truth is there are more skeletons in obama’s closet than anything you can dig up for the governor. And she will kick Joe Biden’s you know what during the debate.

Arpeggy ,I’m in total agreement with you. IF this woman Sara Palin had been vetted and she had a clean record , we wouldn’t be having this discusion. This woman was born unto a small town and she shows signs of never having left it in body or mind. Why would you be asking what the the office of the Vice President does? Why wouldn’t she know about Iraq? Her son is off to war, as a mother wouldn’t you expect her to do some homework? Let me ask this silly question…. how in hell is this woman going to debate foriegn affairs with Senator Biden? She can take six months off to study and she won’t be able to catch up to his level of expertese. I can’t see her surviving the next month on the ticket. This family obviously has big problems without her obvious lack of integrity and knowledge of the world.

I’m a Canadian woman – and I now live in the UK, so maybe my opinion isn’t too important in the scheme of things – except – oh yeah – if elected this woman could end up running one of the world’s most powerful nations. This thought makes my blood go funny and goosebumps arrive on my arms. I’m a liberal – if I were American I would most likely be a card-carrying Democrat. In spite of this, I do like some (I said “some”) of the things that John McCain says and he seems to walk the talk as much as any politician can. But his choice of this woman for VP has made me re-think all this. Surely my American sisters won’t vote for this ticket merely because one person on it has ovaries?

Sarah Palin was elected Mayor of Wasilla, AK on October 2, 1996 with a total vote of 617 to John Steins 413 votes. In her first three weeks this was the headline:

********************************************************************************
NEW WASILLA MAYOR ASKS CITY’S MANAGERS TO RESIGN IN LOYALTY TEST
Author: S.J. Komarnitsky
Daily News Reporter
Staff
Date: October 26, 1996
Publication: Anchorage Daily News (AK)
Page: D4
Word count: 388
The newly elected mayor of Wasilla has asked all of the city’s top managers to resign in order to test their loyalty to her administration. Mayor Sarah Palin sent the resignation requests Thursday to Police Chief Irl Stambaugh, public works director Jack Felton, finance director Duane Dvorak and Mary Ellen Emmons, the head of libraries. A fifth director — John Cooper, who oversaw the city museum — resigned earlier this month after Palin eliminated his position.

Palin also [Read article (fee)]
**********************************************************************************
I am not paying the Anchorage Daily News to get the rest of the article.
I vaguely remember the story, I had so much more on my mind and was not living in Wasilla at the time so it wasn’t real high on my list. I do remember that it was raising a lot of ire in people, ’cause that is just something you don’t do in a small community when competent people are already in place. This isn’t a governor’s office or the White House, this was a small town in rural Alaska where only a 1030 people voted and only 60% of them voted for her. They did start organizing a recall so she backed down. She did end up firing the police chief, who, if memory serves me, had resigned, I think, from Anchorage PD to take the Wasilla job and was known to be a good cop. I do seem to remember some kind to flap over books, but was even less focused on statewide news within a short time after the last article came out due to family tragedy.

I lost my focus for a while, so I’m sure more happened than even hit my radar. I have been doing some checking on other things. For instance: I know she was elected governor with something like 114,737 votes. There were several other candidates running, the democrat, the independent, the a.i., the green, the libertarian….. Combined, they received slightly less than Palin. Assuming the people that voted the first time for her for mayor still voted for her, you who would support the McCain/Palin ticket are going to let fewer than 115,000 votes convince you that this person is ready to be a heartbeat away from the most powerful job in the nation. With a 72 year old 4 time cancer survivor on the other side of the ticket, it is a real concern. I don’t have exact numbers in front of me, but something like 18 – 20 million people voted and caucused for Barack Obama. Not fewer than live in a large town. And the numer of votes Biden has recieved over the years were more than my brain could deal with tonight.

I know too much about politics in Alaska, and because of my knowledge, I can’t see how Palin can suddenly jump to the 2nd highest position in the land. And from what I have read of her cuts and slashes she did make at the state level, they were mainly against those who can least afford it. Cutting WIC? (For those of you who don’t know- Women, Infants and Children program for low income pregnant women and for infants and children up to six. I know how important this program is to many moms to keep milk and the other foods allowed under the program with WIC.)

I know I cannot support any candidate who wants to impose their religious beliefs on everyone. One part of my early American and world history I remember was that the earliest Americans came here because they wanted freedom of and from, religion. Why is it that there is a significant number of people in this country insist that they should be able to force their beliefs on the rest of us? And do it in the name of the founding fathers? Do people really forget what we are supposed to stand for? I do not care that Palin is a woman or a mom or whatever. I don’t care how many children she has, or how she raises them. If her kids get screwed up because she isn’t around much, or if they all come out like little Einsteins, that’s on her and her husband. I just know I have absolutely zero confidence that the gov is ready for prime time and according to the platform she used as a candidate and her time in Wasilla, I don’t want someone like that in office. I want people who believe in freedom. Real freedom.

Thought of Life

Knowing what you know, a;lsdkjf;alsdkjfas;ldfjsal;dkjf??

of course you know what you know.

But how do you really feel about palin.

More importantly, how do you really feel about Mccain.

How do you feel about Obama; about Joe Biden?

This is not a test to see how competent you are or how complex your responses might be in regards to linguistic ability.

Just think to yourself, how do you really feel?

A very common occurrence is when republicans try to make democrats feel guilty for not giving Palin a chance simply because she is a firm republican. Another common occurrence is when democrats decide to go to sleep because an argument is just not worth it. When it is said that Palin is dis credible for simple reasons we have just read, it doesn’t make the whole point. We don’t knowingly realize she isn’t the right choice because of simple inabilities… seriously, this is not the case. They say democrats are essentially knocking her to discredit her ability to lead. They say democrats are worried about her lack of experience, and her lack of foreign political savvy. All I can say is; what can possibly matter more than your first impression of someone, untarnished by partisan viewpoints. When problems arise, America will come together and find solutions, bar none. But are Americans going to make their own decisions, or are they going to live their sedentary lifestyles and allow themselves to be swayed by advertisements and propaganda, getting off on their lottery pick politician who might be elected and, “pay off big” when their numbers are called. I’ve always been a bit apathetic about politics, but it’s probably because I’m just used to our country being dissed for its poor choices especially regarding it’s leadership, and that’s seriously lame. All I’m saying is; instinctively, how do you really feel about either pair in office? It’s up to you, no one else. Don’t let words or stories or speeches about experience influence you more than you can handle. Just f’ing be true to yourself, and vote for the one who will be true to you.

Another subject: there seem to be a lot of newcomers on here who are trying to dump the conversation to the lowest level (dirty mouths, etc.). Please don’t reply in kind. And before someone says I’m advocating censorship, the fact is that for the first 6 days I was reading here, people were not calling names.
I’m reading this blog because I feel completely betrayed by McCain. I’m angry that he would think so little of the other women who have already been working at a national level. I’m angry that he caved completely to this one religious constituency. At first I thought it was an attention-grabbing stunt. But now I see he threw Principles to the wind. He’ll do anything to win.

Well, this baby Trig may be Palin’s baby? (Palin’s really good at keeping seacrets) or it could be her grand baby, and this time the young man has to marry the young girl. Or is it possible that palin’s husband is not the father of that child. Anna stated in her letter that Palin quit one of the highest paying jobs in Alaska because of a fellow councilmans immoral and unethical beheavoir, and Palin as a former beauty queen was one of the councilmens tagets that he was succesful in hitting right in the bullseye. It reminds me of an old serial on T.V. called Payton Place. In the political arena, I suppose any thing go’s.

Grew up in Alaska

Would someone please enlighten me about the “bridge to nowhere”?? As I understand it, this bridge was to have allowed vehicle traffic to the Ketchikan Internationl Airport … the second busiest airport in Southeast Alaska (Juneau being first). The only way to get there now is by ferry because the airport is located on an island. I looked at the numbers of people into and out of the airport for the month of April – more than 13,000. If you figure that out to a yearly number its more than 156,000 people. Is there anywhere in the “lower 48” that would’ve thought that acceptable … the only way to get to their “intrnational” airport was by ferry???

And to have SP, who is documented as having supported the bridge, suddenly decide its politically unwise to continue to do so. Yet she evidently approved to continue the use State funds to build roads up to it??? A State sponsored “road to nowhere”????

Is there something I’missing here??? How can it really be deemed a bridge to “nowhere”? Is the Ketchikan International Airport nowhere?? And how can an Alaskan be proud of the stand she took in turning back the Federal funds and by doing so didn’t she proclaim that Ketchikan is NOWHERE??

And she calls herself an Alaskan??? I just don’t “get it” ….

And if hunting and dressing a moose is a “qualification” for VP … then I submit there’s a lot of other women out there even more qualified than she’d ever be ….

Now, I hate to make anyone made but there are two sides to every story. Here’s a story from the other side:

Subject: An Assessment of Sarah Palin

From an old Air America buddy in Alaska –

I met and spoke with Sarah Palin about two years ago at our downtown Park Strip. It is a place for walking, carnivals, political outdoor things and such. She was cooking hotdogs at a fund raiser and introducing herself to the public as a Governor hopeful.
She came by and said the usual “Hi, I’m Sarah Palin and I am running for Governor”…and I expected her to keep on to the next person but she asked me who I was and what I did in Alaska and we ended up talking for 15 minutes about me, Air America (she was all agog!) and my career in the Army and AAM. She is a pilot (Super Cub) I’m told although all she told me about that was that she loved flying.
As I watched her over the next six months as she successfully ran for Governor I was really impressed. I was impressed greatly even before that after she resigned a good position (Alaska Gas and Oil Regulatory Commission) because a fellow Commission member (Chair of the Alaska Republican Party) misused their office and position. He was using the FAX, computers, printing room and all to promote the Republican endeavors while in a State job. That is a huge no-no in any government employment position.
She resigned and made her point and within weeks Randy Ruderich (the above bad guy) found his a.s out on the street and a subsequent investigation found him guilty and he was fined $12,000. Small change actually but a giant point was made.
Next she went after our most horrible Governor ever, Governor Murkowski, and darned if she didn’t beat him! All of us here in Alaska, except the Democrats, are sick of our State’s corruption. That fact was shouted to the heavens after she was elected with an overwhelming point spread.
After she got into office she started after corrupt legislators and with the FBI’s help we’ve put four of them in prison, indicted six more and the “Corrupt B.stard’s Club” as they arrogantly called themselves (even had hats made with CBC on the front!) suddenly found it no fun anymore. Club membership is now in the toilet!!
The current flap which has cost her a ten point loss of popularity (she’s still 82%!) was over firing a popular Commissioner of Public Safety who is responsible for our Alaska State Troopers. She fired him for no STATED reason which was her prerogative as the Gov. He served entirely at her option. She and her whole family had a bad, bad experience with a rogue Trooper who was married to Sarah’s sister. His name is Trooper Wooten. This dimwit Trooper had threatened Sarah’s father (death threat!), threatened Sarah (“I’ll get you too”), tasered his 12 year old stepson, drove drunk in his AST cruiser, got a pass by a fellow Trooper who stopped him for erratic driving a second time while in civvies and just a host of other things not yet released to the public. He got away with it and got another pass by the Commissioner’s appointed AST Trooper Internal Affairs investigator with a tiny slap on the wrist. Five days off without pay to be exact!!
This maverick Trooper is still on the payroll but only just. The Union intervening saved his malcontent .ss. He’ll yet get his I’m sure. Incredible heat is being heaped on the Troopers. Public heat, not the Governors office.
The Democrats had the audacity to appoint a obviously biased investigator, Rep. “Gunny” French (so called because he lied about being in the USMC while running for the Legislature) is a staunch liberal and under the orders of Senate President Lyda Green who hates Sarah. She hates Sarah because after being elected Governor Sarah told the whole Legislature in one of her first meetings with them that, quote; “All of you here need some Adult Supervision!!!”. Sarah was seriously pissed and not afraid of anyone there. That played wonderfully well with Alaskans after all of our corruption and after all of her successful battles against a seriously entrenched corrupt government here in Alaska . It p.ssed off the whole Legislature though! They have stayed p.ssed but also afraid of her because of her popularity.
She reminds me personally of our Alaska wolverine which will fight anything in it’s path if it sees fit to do so. No respect at all for size or position. Wife Cindy is in this category too. Unfortunately.
In closing I must tell you that she is the best, most moral and most focused leader I’ve seen since President Reagan. I feel, really strongly, that like Alaska the rest of our country will love her within a few weeks. Put simply, she represents middle America like NO leader we’ve ever had. I think McCain made a totally brilliant move in choosing her. She’s a maverick who is probably tougher and more focused than McCain himself….and she won’t be a total “Yes Man” or more appropriately, woman. McCain will love her.
In 2012 she will be President.

Doesn’t it just make you wonder why the people of this country are being so dazzled by someone they don’t even know anything about? The MSM announced, “A star is born.” One speech and “a star is born.” And the speech was nothing about hope or the future. It was to be dismissive of another person running for President and to make fun. Just remember this Mrs. Palin: Jesus was a community organizer. Pontius Pilate was a governor.
Ms. Kilkenny. . .kudos for your courage. You can come here to PA and live anytime. We need more people with your integrity – which is something Mrs. Palin is a little short on. Thanks for informing us so that WE can make an informed decision.

OK, I’ve been spending the last couple of days reading blogs from all political spectra about the Kilkenny letter, and I’ve formed two opinions. First, the letter itself is a real mixed bag; Kilkenny brings out some interesting facts, but I’m not convinced most of them are politically actionable. Second, no one of any political stripe, as far as I’ve seen, has challenged the facts themselves, though there are a whole lotta folk who a) pretend to know what Kilkenny’s motivations are, and b) think they’re relevant.

As to Kilkenny’s facts, the media have been busy vetting her letter over the past week, and have independently verified many of them; not one as far as I’m aware (I’m open to correction) has been discredited.

Case in point: the librarian. The facts (apparently) are true, and are (in chronological order): a) the librarian was asked whether she would support the removal of books; b) she refused; and c) she was fired by Palin. (Kilkenny’s assertion, on the other hand, that she was fired *because* she refused to condone censorship, is hearsay and consequently irrelevant.)

Also irrelevant is Kilkenny’s implication that Palin was busy building parks and sports arenas when she should have been building a sewage treatment plant. That’s a political opinion, not a fact. As to the sports arena, from all accounts, it’s a very popular place in Wasilla; the question of whether the money would have been better spent on sewage treatment is a question for the people of Wasilla — not people who two weeks ago had never heard of the place — to decide. Anne Kilkenny (obviously) thinks so; other Wasillans (apparently) don’t. Either way, who cares?

However, the undisputed fact that Palin inherited a debt-free town and left it $22 million in the red *does* go straight to the image she’s trying to present of a fiscal conservative. That is a fact I’d like to see addressed.

City administrator: I can see the Dems scoring some political points on this one: this woman who claims to have executive experience hired an administrator to help her run a town of five thousand people?! However, to be fair to Palin (and why shouldn’t we be?), Kilkenny admits the city administrator was all but forced on Palin as part of a political compromise Palin didn’t want, so I’m not sure we can tar and feather her too much over that one.

Is anyone aware of a point-for-point reply to Kilkenny’s letter? Not mudslinging or impugning of motives (there’s already plenty of that!) but a balanced treatment and contextualization of the facts.

7 09 2008
NCJE Culver

One further point: Anne Kilkenny’s portrayal of Sarah Palin as “mean and vindictive”. Whether Palin is “mean and vindictive” or just “tough and single-minded” depends on whom you ask, and I don’t see the Obama campaign being able to make much use of Kilkenny’s characterization. In any case, “a pitbull with lipstick” is apparently precisely what a lot of people *like* to see in their politicos, so I just don’t see the opportunity for many political points here.

I just heard the polls today and they were saying that the Republican Convention had more watchers than the Democratic Convention. I replied that, of course, every Democrate was watching to evaluate the opposition and that it does not mean anything in terms of people who will be voting for the Republicans. They would not print my comment. Are people afraid of the truth? Why do they chose to ignore it?

I have worked in a “mostly women” profession all of my life and have seen and been victim to much of this type of horizontal violence. As the sun begins to set on the great american emipre, only one of the candidates in contention truly has a grasp on what is needed to normalize the global terrain and give mankind the boost it needs. Until our own country becomes like most other countries, we cannot truly be a part of mainstream human society. McCain and Palin are two folks who will stand in the way of true humanity, by virtue of a continuance of the silly american ideals they expound. Palin is the type of person who likes american things because she is comfortable with them; she’s not the global type who can ‘indulge’ in americana and globalism equally- she has a distinct appreciation for the former and disregards the importance of the latter. Her american indulgence WILL BE brought to light by Obama and Biden, then we’ll see how popular she is! If I had $10 for Obama, I’d send it to his campaign.

What a true hero Anne is! Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and views. If it is true that some retaliation is to come to you, I really hope you make an effort to let that be known publicly so all of us thankful readers can rally around for you! I like that Ann isn’t going straight to the press with this, I think it makes for a more humble and believable presentation of what she has written. Besides that, people would more easily dismiss her letter as a ploy to become a famous celebrity; her letter is very clear and whole hearted and I’d hate to see her have to go through all that slander.

Dear folks from Wasilla – In the interest of the nation as a whole I beg of you -please keep Ms Pallin for yourself. You could see it as a huge patriotic service to just keep her there.

As she was being presented so adoringly by Mc Cain at the rnc I could only think “Oh, look…he has a new puppy!” and this isn’t an ordinary pit bull to be sure. It is more like one of those annoying chihuahuas that yip incessantly while nipping at your heals and peeing all over the floor.

So as fluffy and new as she may be we have enough stains on the carpet of the constitution and this nation and do not need more. Despite the fact that her trainers are busy with their obedience training session, she just isn’t going to work as a lead dog for this country.

Apologies for wishing her upon you but maybe in the small town of Wasilla and a state that has a smaller population than most large cities maybe you can keep track of her better than letting her rampage through the entire nation.

Alaska is beautiful – so are most of the people – keep it that way!

charlieg: …after the Palin speech, McCain has surged 4 points ahead from 7 points down.

First, as to numbers, the most recent polling data are way over the map — Gallup/USA Today are giving McCain a ten-point lead, but most other polls show the race as tied. Either way, it’s called a convention bounce, and Democrats enjoyed their own ten-point bounce a week ago. Things’ll settle back down again in a few days.

In the meanwhile, it might (or might not 🙂 ) be relevant to point out that the POTUS is selected not by popular vote but by the Electoral College, where Obama still enjoys a substantive (albeit post-RNC slightly diminished) lead. At RealClear, Obama’s number has dropped, due to Pennsylvania slipping back from “leaning” Obama into the toss-up column, but McCain’s hasn’t budged for several days. Following Pollster’s numbers, of the 116 remaining toss-up EC votes, Obama only needs to pick up 27, while McCain would need to snag 91 of them to pull out a victory. With less than 60 days before the election, the safe money’s on Obama, though this election *has* been full of surprises.

Whoever wins, I think this election’s one for the record books.

The pathetic thing is that voters supported her after ONE prepared speech…they will vote for her because “she is just like one of them” or “she’s a mom” or “she burned books” or “she is tough” or “she’s a woman”…they won’t want to hear FACTS about her or McCain and they won’t ASK for substance. Sad stories about the PAST is not what our country needs. She played “Bad Cop” he played “Good Cop” and the voters will be blinded by razzle dazzle and our country will continue to sink deeper into an abyss. Name call all you want but the facts are this country needs more than just another pretty face and sad stories. If McCain loves his country so much, then he AND Sarah should represent ALL AMERICANS, not just those who support their PERSONAL views.
Go to Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” on McCain…it compares the speech McCain and Bush had in common, among other things.
I encourage everyone to do research on both sides before you decide on your precious vote…don’t decide just based on a prepared speech…it’s insulting to our intelligence as Americans!

No body is playing “dirty tricks to scrounge around” for anything negative they can find on the good Gov from Alaska. You sound a little defensive–as if your core believes have been shaken. Have they?

If Palin has a serious character flaw—esp one that could harm the American people, it was up to McCain to find it. He didn’t.

We are all well aware by now that the great Mav wanted Lieberman for the VP slot. [See NY Times] However, he did not have the cojones to overrule his staff and ultimately his base. So much for going against party politics.

Anne Kilkenny is nothing more than a Democrat hack. Go to factcheck.org and see how Kilkenny has lied about Sarah Palin. It will take some time to answer all the hackneyed allegations Kilkenny is making. Your blind acceptance of her undocumented allegations is proof of your own ignorant partisanship. If similar unproven allegations had been made about your messiah Obama, you would have been absolutely outraged … which makes all of you Palin-bashers hypocrites.

BTW, when you get a chance, why don’t you Google “Chicago Annenberg Challenge.” The offical CAC report says the program to change students’ grades in the Chicago area was an utter failure which squandered $110 million. This is about the only administrative achievement of Obamessiah AND HE FAILED! BTW, Obama and his buddy Bill Ayers (the unrepentant Weatherman terrorist cum leftw-wing professor) have yet to provide an accounting about how $110 million was spent to achieve … nothing.

8 09 2008
Hankmeister

Often it’s what’s left out that constitutes the lie. Here’s the proper context in which to view the long-term Wasilla debt of about 19 million dollars … the vast majority of which went to an infrastructure made necessary by Wasilla being the fastest growing community in Alaska, now being its fourth largest municipality:

The City of Wasilla is one of the fastest growing communities in the State of Alaska and the United States. The City of Wasilla’s population has grown by approximately 82 percent since 1992. Along with this population growth has come dramatic economic expansion. An indication of this expansion is the growth in sales tax revenue over the last eleven years. It is projected that sales tax revenue has grown by over 238 percent since fiscal year 1994. Based on projections from state and local sources, these population and economic trends are predicted to continue into the foreseeable future.

Along with this expansion have come unique challenges for the City of Wasilla. It is the commitment of the City of Wasilla to ensure that the City meets these challenges and to ensure that the necessary services will be available when the citizens and businesses need them in the future to meet the dynamic growth that the City of Wasilla will continue to experience.

http://www.cityofwasilla.com/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=6

The 2007 Census Estimate gives Wasilla a population of 9,780 which makes it the 4th largest city in Alaska. Wasilla was just a blip of a town a few years ago but has seen monumental growth in the last 15 years for several reasons.

It has a growing tourist industry and many attractions and even a hockey team the Alaska Avalanche. Wasilla is located at the junction of Highway 1 and Highway 3 which has became a major traffic thoroughfare. People who live in Anchorage who wish to travel North, West, or East must go through Wasilla. Those coming from the East such as the Yukon to Anchorage or traveling from Anchorage to Fairbanks are going through Wasilla.

Wasilla has seen continued growth in service industries that maintained Wasilla’s position as the trade center of the Matanuska-Sistina Valley.

In 1994 a statewide referendum to move the capital of Alaska to Wasilla lost by only 10,000 votes.

So what does this mean?

It means that you have a city that is exploding and did not at the time have the tax base to prepare the infrastructure for this level of growth. So what did Mayor Palin do, she did what ALL cities do when they need major expenditures in a hurry. She floated a bond to finance the sports center and some other projects. With the growth of the city and the exponential growth of city revenue paying this bond over time is not a problem at all. This is what almost all cities do for expenditures like this. It is debt but it is debt that is very intelligently managed and will be paid off.

As far as lowering property taxes and raising the sales tax, since a great deal of sales tax revenue came from travelers and tourism from those who live outside the city, this was a wise course of action. It brought in “out of city money” to the city. The “regressive” & “progressive” ideological nonsense from Kilkenny is just that … nonsense.

Mayor Palin left office due to term limits in 2002. The candidate she endorsed, Diane Keller, has continued to run Wasilla with the same vision as her friend Sarah Palin.

Wasilla Won on Award for Superior Financial Reporting and as of FY 2005 carried an undesignated cash surplus of $5.5 million and carries a long term debt of $21.4 million and with the city’s income and continued increases in revenue this is very manageable. Major capital asset improvements include Storm drain additions, road and intersection construction, water reservoir construction, water and sewer line extensions and an airport apron expansion.

If Sarah Palin had had a “D” after her name, you hacks would be crowing about how she wonderfully grew the town and had the foresight she exercised in accomodating such unprecedented growth. C’mon admit it, you’re a bunch of hatemongering hacks, otherwise you would have used your sense of fair-play and viewed the Kilkerry screed with a more critical and jaundiced eye. Heh!

I don’t usually blog myself but I do read many different blogs. The only reason I am doing this is to answer those that say that this letter is like the letters about Barrack Obama that we get so upset about. If you had bothered to take the time to check snopes.com about this you’d find that the only letter that they could substantiate was Anne’s letter. The other letters that have been posted on various sites, singing her praises, have not. Most of letters and rumors circulating about Obama have been defunked. As far as this letter and why it interests “us” so much, you’re right we’re scared. If people could reelect Bush after his dismal record his first four years in office, they could be uninformed enough to believe that McCain & Palin are going to change Washington, the Washington that their party has had control of for 8 years and that McCain has supported. Personally, I was insulted when Palin had the audacity to imply that those that supported Hillary should support her. She can’t hold a candle to Hillary and her views are polar opposites. I would love to have a woman in such a powerful position but only if she had the ability to do so. Sarah Palin doesn’t even come close.

I just went to factcheck.org as was suggested and although some rumors were found to be false, they stated that they did not have enough information about all of the claims in Kilkenny’s letter and that they were still pursuing the subject. They also indicated that the rumors that they found to be false were from inquiries about the rumors not specifically from Kilkenny’s letter. Several of them were not even addressed in her letter and some of them were misquoted or misinterpreted.

Thank you so much for speaking up on behalf of your fellow Americans. Nothing scares me more than having someone else in the White House that can’t be wrong. She came out of no where and the Republicans are trying to keep her hidden as long as possible. Red Flag! We as citizens have a right to know who she is and what her qualifications are just like all of the other candidates. McCain asked her to be on the ticket after one short meeting. I went through more scrutiny to get my job with the airlines! The press is taking a beating for asking the most basic of questions. Why should she be spared if no other candidate was?

I heard today that after raking Obama over the coals about his religion and his past minister, the Republicans are crying unfair because reporters are beginning to ask about Palin’s religion. I think folks need to know about her creationist beliefs. And if she’s a pentecostal, there’s an even bet she’s into the rapture. If so, she’s the last one who should be anywhere near our foreign policy. I’m also flat out opposed to letting people hide behind their religion. If she wants to outlaw a woman’s right to choose, what does she propose as the penalty? Prison time? Death? And why does her religion give her a right to discriminate against gays and lesbians. If you think it’s a sin, honey, don’t do it, but why deny spousal benefits to others. Now you’ve moved your narrow religious interpretation into public policy.

The letter is a complete fabrication. No way was this just a “letter to friends.” What a crock! Who tells their “friends” who to vote for, what you do for a living, where you live, how old John McCain is and to “google” your name to learn more about you?
So, she is completely honest about someone who “hates” her? Yeah right. Anne doesn’t happen to mention what a flaming Liberal she is either. Get real people. This is ridiculous. Nothing like having a huge axe to grind and a huge desire to be put out on the internet with a complete bogus “letter to friends.”

Anyone that believes that SP is qualified must be smokiing in the shower. She is truly a misfit for this generation of informed voters.

What ever party you believe in be sure to get out the voters this year. Can we keep the smae policies that we have had to live withfor these 8 years?

Anne,
You paragraph about ‘why I’m writing this’ said it all!!!! You are nothing but a jealous, want-to be housewife with nothing better to do that try and hurt someone else future. Why don’t you spend your freetime doing for the good of others. How do you sleep at night. You surely must be ashamed of yourself.
I found your letter pathetic and desperate to take the attention away from your ‘obvious’ rival!! Get a life Anne Kilkenny!!

Anyone in our town who knows Anne is familiar with her high propensity for theatrics. Her letter is very carefully crafted but is brimming with untruths. Sarah is responsible for expansive growth and jobs in our town and the town/athletic center was greatly overdue. Every community needs a safe-up to date facility for their children to participate in sports and for the community to hold events. Our town is the same as any other in this regard. Life in our town is close knit so we know who the liars are and who the workers are. Anne was right about one thing in her letter, Sarah does listen to what the people want, even if it means she has to change her direction to serve their interests. Any good leader is supposed to listen to the needs of their constituents. Our family is excited for Todd and Sarah, and we know Washington will never be the same when she weighs in on the waste that has dominated our Federal Government.

Good for Anne for speaking up in spite of the risks involved. So many Americans seem to be taken in, right now, by Sarah’s “pretty face” and “dynamism” without looking deeply at her political record or taking time to analyse her philosophy which to my mind is narrow minded and reactionary. I am still recovering from a photo of her I saw on the Internet, big Ultrabrite smile for the cameras, proudly grasping the antlers of a beautiful caribou she shot. Her little girl kneels in the snow next to her. That smile that dazzles other Americans unnerves me, she looks for all the world like she wouldn’t be averse to biting into raw flesh.

To ME – McCains people didn’t vet Palin. By his own admission he only talked to her once. They don’t care. She is there to create a distraction. Since her name was announced no one is talking about seriuos issues. If this was any other circumstance she wouldn’t rate a mention. If women (and men) take this election seriously they’ll stop wasting time talking about this woman and focus on McCain and the destruction he will wreck on this country. This is a man who has been reckless from day one. He isn’t a maverick, he’s arrogant. Examine his war record – he wasn’t the lone POW from Viet Nam, but he’s certainly the only one to come out in such good shape. Look at what he did to his first wife. Look at his voting record. He’s a liar. His top advisors are petroleum industry lobbyists. If the American people would stop talking about Sarah Nobody and focus on what is important – if they would stand up and demand the truth be told, we might save our country and begin to repair the damage done.

SHJ, where do you get your information?

it’s funny, i hear all this slamming, and what’s the difference between what you guys are all doing and then make fun of Palin for doing the same to Obama? you liberals make me laugh… now to just comment on SHJ… why would Mccain pick a VP who actually raised taxes on big oil? hm… that’s really siding with big oil isn’t it?

i don’t know about you guys, but i would for one like to see my gas prices go down for a change… GOP are the only ones who fought for domestic oil drilling, while democrats went on vacation without voting. getting domestic oil will allow us to make the prices of oil, not opec.
and honestly how can you respect a party who sends 300+ reporters to dig up on sarah? i mean that’s great for the alaskan economy…
speaking about economy, good luck affording obama’s socialist programs. should be interesting bringing home a much smaller paycheck, while working the same or even more…

funny you should say that, I always smoke in the shower…. and in the car, the bedroom, the kitchen, the livingroom, the front yard, the back yard, and I’m smoking one right now sitting at the computer. What can I say? I’m a hippie and I know it.

But no cloud of pot smoke is thick enough to keep me from seeing Sarah for what she really is.

Most of the “facts” that Anne states in her letter have already been debunked by outside truth finding organizations (www.factcheck.org). This is either completely made up, or a sad attempt by someone who holds ten year grudges.

A search for “kilkenny” or “anne kilkenny” at factcheck.org at the moment results in this page:
sliming Palin

Here is something relevant:

We’ll be looking into other charges in an e-mail by a woman named Anne Kilkenny for a future story. For more explanation of the bullet points above, please read the Analysis.

Correction: In our original story, we incorrectly said that a few of the claims we examine here were included in the e-mail by Kilkenny. Only one of the claims – about the librarian’s firing – was similar to an item in that e-mail. We regret the error.

Clarification: The summary originally said that Palin “tripled” per-student funding. The bill Palin signed will triple per-student funding for what Alaska calls “intensive needs” students, but has not done so yet. We also reworded that sentence to make clear the tripling is for funding for special needs students with particularly high costs. Special needs funding overall increased as well.

We’re still analyzing Kilkenny’s claims, and we will be posting something on this soon

It is wonderful to see individuals like Anne still have the courage to speak up. The USA is becoming so much like despotic states where people are AFRAID to open their mouths. Palin is a disaster waiting to happen. Please read the link above.

i believe our friend above, celeste and bystander made the best point… and imran, it’s not bad to speak up, but it’s bad to speak up when you are misleading and making false accusations.

in your own blog you write about Palin’s lack of experience… she was part of an executive branch, in two different scenarios. that’s more executive experience then Obama has. Obama only has legislative experience, which is much different then actually being President. To not default Mccain on this issue, Mccain has been around many administrations. He has had many meetings with them over the years, he has been in different committees within the Senate and this gives him a more well rounded criteria for being president. Obama can’t ask Biden on every single issue what he thinks he should do. And i’m not too sure what country you are from… Thinking that people don’t speak up in the USA. If anything we might talk to much and not listen when we should. This isn’t China or Russia where you could get imprisoned or shot for going against the government. Enjoy your freedom…

Congratulations, Anne!

It appears you are now the official poster child for all of the Dems who were convinced that people from Alaska were somehow less fit to run for office than people in the Lower 48!!

These are the same people that smugly note that Palin’s college experience makes her less American than someone who went to a real college.

People like this are running MyBarackObama.com, and are keeping track of who is contributing and putting in the hours, dispensing rewards — plum assignments, VIP access — to those that are most loyal.

To these people, a snide joke becomes a comfortable chuckle, an invitation to listen in on an act of male bonding, the kind usually reserved for jokes about, say, the size of a woman’s breasts.

But the target isn’t Palin alone. I am old enough to know this kind of invitational demeans all women; it is intended to demean all women. Younger women in the Hillary campaign said they were shocked by the virulence they saw — and some of you may be old enough to remember men throwing taunts and rocks at the first Women’s Strike Day rally in Chicago in the early ’70s.

At this point in history, the smug liberals who want to jeer and laugh have the heady sense that they are free to mock others who aren’t as smart as them, who went to the wrong schools, who came from the wrong families. They are once again (yes, it did happen before), free to mock a woman — this time, not because she’s an easy mark, carrying a sign demanding equality, but BECAUSE she is, indisputably, a legitimate contender for vice president of the United States.

It’s really pathetic, actually.

Thank you Anne. I only wish you had included the situation revolving around Track’s enlistment, ie. his drug use during the past 2 years that was also” common knowledge” in Wasilla. Seems like this has been hushed up as much as the baby daddy issue.

Please do not call Anne Kilkenny a “gadfly”. That is not the correct terminology for her, considering what she has done.

“Gadflies” are, all too often these days, nothing less that “leeches” to their “host”: the bureaucracy they claim to be keeping tabs on.

Anne Kilkenny, on the other hand, thank God for her! To know that in Wasilla, as ordered by Sarah Palin’s church at the time, books were being purposely checked out from the library and never returned that contained information the (fundamentalist) church found “objectionable”? well, I call that information a “gift”!

And look at the courage this took:
excerpt:
I looked around and realized that everybody else was afraid to say anything because they were somehow vulnerable.

This lady is a truth-sayer, she is no gadfly!
