Palin’s Future Son-in-Law Heads to GOP Convention?

2 09 2008

Here are the headlines right now on the Anchorage Daily News website: (God, I love Alaska)

  • Bristol Palin’s Boyfriend Heads to Convention
  • FBI taped more than 100 Stevens Calls (Indicted Senator Ted Stevens that is)
  • Palin Leaps to National Stage and Ever-Increasing Scrutiny
  • Electronic Scarecrows Haze Ravens from Utility Equipment (Hey…it’s news.)

Yes, that first headline is right, apparently.  It took me a while to get my palms off my face so I could check it out, but it’s true.  I know we’re not supposed to interfere with the personal lives of candidates’ children.  I know that many people, including myself, feel sorry for Bristol and the fact that she was hurled out in front of the nation with nothing to cover her secret expanding midsection except a baby and a giant blanket.  I even heard Barack Obama ask us all to drop it.  But, inviting the boyfriend to come to the convention in the middle of all this?  Who has brought this, and him, right into the most glaring of bright lights, in front of the hugest of audiences?  How to create a distracting, embarrassing spectacle with one plane ticket. The mind reels….I think.   It’s been reeling since Friday, so it’s hard to tell any more.

And for those of you who have wondered what you’ll do with yourselves when the Palin fiasco is over (and there are more and more media outlets speculating that it will be long before November), take heart.  Read that second headline up at the top of the page.  Ted Stevens will be the methedone for your Palin addiction.  Trust me.

New wrinkle from TPM Muckraker:

Palin’s Lobbyist Has Abramoff Ties
By Kate Klonick and Zachary Roth – September 2, 2008, 1:01PM

It looks like Sarah Palin’s claim to represent a cleaner brand of politics could be about to take a bruising.

The Washington Post reports today that, while Mayor of Wasilla, Palin oversaw the hiring of a lobbyist, Steven Silver — a former chief of staff to now-indicted GOP senator Ted Stevens — to help win federal earmarks for the city.

But Silver appears to have additional ties that could further undercut Palin’s image as a squeaky-clean reformer. According to Senate lobbying disclosure reports examined by TPMmuckraker, from 2002 to 2004 Silver listed as a client Jack Abramoff’s lobbying firm, Greenberg Traurig. On Greenberg’s behalf, Silver lobbied the federal government on “issues relating to Indian/Native American policy,” “exploration for oil and gas” and “legislation relating to gaming issues” — the very issues that Abramoff headed up for Greenberg at the time. In other words, Silver appears to have been a part of “Team Abramoff.”

Indeed, one specific bill that Silver lobbied on for Greenberg, according to the forms, was S.627, also known as the Internet Gambling Funding Prohibition Act. A former Greenberg lobbyist confirmed to TPMmuckraker that Silver would have been working to oppose the bill. And it was an earlier version of this very bill that Abramoff famously worked to spike, with the support of Christian conservative leaders Lou Sheldon and Ralph Reed.

There’s additional evidence of ties between Silver and Abramoff. Emails released by a House committee in 2006 as part of a probe of Abramoff show the now-disgraced lobbyist scheduling a meeting with Silver in 2001.

Silver is a member of the Anchorage-based law firm of Robertson, Monacle, and Eastaugh, which the Post describes as having “close ties” to Stevens, and Alaska Congressman Don Young, who’s under federal investigation for allegedly taking bribes. Since 2005, Silver has contributed $3500 each to Stevens and Young, according to campaign contributions records posted at CampaignMoney.com.

This is far from the first time that Abramoff’s trail of corruption has led to Alaska. Last year, Mark Zachares, a former aide to Young, pleaded guilty to accepting tens of thousands of dollars in gifts from Abramoff in return for using his position to advance Abramoff’s goals.

Silver did not immediately return a call requesting comment.

First, I want to join in with all the others, and congratulate you. The site is beats everything else out there. Thank you.

Everyone feels for the kids involved in this, but now it looks like the progressives more than the Republicans, and I can’t understand how Gov. Palin could do this to them.

At this point, I only have one thought left, looping around in my head with each new revelation. Somebody must call Child Protective Services.

Does CPS have a program equivalent to the witness protection program? Because Bristol qualifies, in my opinion. I’m happy to pay extra taxes for her new identity.

They JUST begged for privacy for the kids… and now are bringing the self described “F…ing redneck” down to the national convention?!?!?!?!

What ARE these people thinking?!

This US magazine story may have been posted earlier, but it seems that Palin is being trashed on the checkout magazine stand already. This is so over…

Personally, if I requested everyone to “lay off my family”…then logic would indicate that I would not bring them into the circus atmosphere of a major political party campaign. This does not appear to be wise judgement…not in the least!

It makes me want to yell “QUICK! Someone…get the net”

Here’s what I think, of course I’m loopy from watching the convention, but I think aside from the obvious political shennanigan, they want to get this young man where they can keep an eye on him. Nothing like a little 2nd hand secret service protection to keep the National Enquirer and there offers of $ at bay.

It will be interesting to see how soon he heads back to Alaska.

Sarah $(*)*% Palin – or – A Short Rant from Norway
Posted by Goofus at 12:56 PM
You guys are lucky. Maybe you know this, maybe you don’t – but I come from
a little town called Wasilla , Alaska . Population 8000 (it’s grown in recent
years, it was closer to 5000 for much of my time there). One high school,
one middle school, both bearing the name of the town.

This is where our next vice president is from, unless America makes me
proud.

Sarah Palin went to my high school – I shared some teachers with her, who
confided in me that she used to be a big pothead. Then Sarah Palin became
mayor of my town, elected largely by a movement of her church. Sarah Palin
came and watched me sing at park dedications, and held out her arms and
swayed back and forth while I sang “Amazing Grace,” because she was filled
with the love of JAYYYYYSUUUUUS. Sarah Palin fired my favorite (and
Wasilla’s favorite) librarian because she disliked her liberal leanings (aka
willingness to stock books that discuss evolution).

Sarah Palin is a moron. Sarah Palin is completely unethical and open to
abusing power. Sarah Palin is radically anti-feminist (don’t let her glasses
fool you!). Sarah Palin is totally inexperienced – she actually hired
someone to run our town for her while she was mayor. Sarah Palin has tried
to fire state employees for personal reasons (ie, her ex-brother-in-law).
Sarah Palin can’t stand scientists, whether they are trying to protect polar
bears or spreading the ridiculous notion that the world is more than 4000
years old.

I really hope that the second-wave women, who worked so hard, and are
tired, and angry for the opportunities that have been lost – are too smart
for this condescending, nasty trick. I know that we want to see a women
president in our lifetime – but if it’s Sarah Palin ….

Sarah Palin as the first female VP…
…is like if Phyllis Schlafly were given the Nobel Peace Prize
…is like giving control of the FCC to the Pussycat Dolls
…is like if Kristen “Kiwi” Smith won 10 Oscars for her masterpiece, “The
House Bunny”

Seems like a milestone, but it’s a TREMENDOUS step backward.

Levi Johnston is supposed to be 20 so he isn’t a child. There is that little statutory rape thing, though. If you got convicted of that, you would be officially branded a sex offender for life in a lot of places.

I imagine they won’t be bringing that up in St. Paul, though.

2 09 2008

They might get Levi a job as a page in Congress, or a lobbyist internship. However, considering the family history it might be wise to keep him away from anything connected with tasers.

Something with the Bristol chronology is still not right. Can anyone point me to a source/story that discusses when she was out of school for “mono” versus transferring schools to be with her mom? Just how long has she been out of school? If she’s just 5 months pregnant….

Also, can anyone elaborate on this mention in the NYTimes:

Family friends said the couple has had some discipline problems with Track, who recently joined the Army. “Track was a big hockey star, and when you’re a jock in high school there’s a certain amount of ego and problems that goes with that,” Mrs. Kincaid said.

Sorry, but if you trot your kids out there and make them central to your narrative, central to your credentials (“I’m a PTA, hockey mom!”), folks gotta right to ask.

I think you have a very valid point there Kimbers. Keep an eye on the wayward lad and keep him away from the media.

They also want to show that the soon to be ‘new son-in-law’ is there with the baby’s mama. All ‘show’ and no substance is what their campaign is about. And it’s finally back firing on them.

Of course the crowd at the convention will stand and cheer for the young
parents to be. Now just imagine if it was Barack Obama’s daughter, 17,
unmarried and preggers…..

What really wrecks me about Bristol’s baby is that Palin said that she told her children about the VP on the day of the announcement. She had told her kids before that they were going to Ohio to celebrate Sarah and Todd’s anniversary. Imagine the shock and fright Bristol must have had when she realised that her pregnancy was all of a sudden going to be plastered over every magazine in America. Look at the pics from last Friday with Bristol holding baby Trig. Look at the fright in her eyes.

I’ll keep saying this until they release the records – Trig is either Track’s baby or Bristol’s. I have seen tons of pics of Sarah and she no looks pregnant. Her breasts aren’t big – and haven’t increased in any pics I’ve seen. And her face isn’t chubby or the like. Her daughter, however, looks the part – but I do believe she’s either pregnant or had the baby and still has baby fat she needs to work off.

Either way, Hayseed to the big city will be one for the history books. Pass me the popcorn to witness this drama.

As for taking Baby Daddy to the convention, that jives totally with the Family Values train…and with this report in the Nat’l Enquirer that Ma Palin’s original plan was for Bristol and Levi to quickly, quietly marry right after the convention. The media frenzy and Bristol’s teenage ways seem to have wrecked that…temporarily:

As a mother and middle school counselor, I am sickened by the obvious exploitation of Bristol to drive home family values/anti-abortion rhetoric.

This has played out in the news in ways (predictable and unavoidable) that will only shame Bristol. I don’t know what kind of woman would do that to her child. From what I am learning, she was never an on the job mother.

I am a working mother myself. I know it’s hard to cover the bases. But it seems that these kids were missing something….when do the “home” life stories come out?

2 09 2008
DemsAreNotAfraid

Isn’t this better than those old Soap Operas like General Hospital? Instead of ancient Dr. Hardy, we have McCain. Instead of Nurse Jesse we have Palin. And instead of Luke and Laura, we have Bristol and her boyfriend!!!

Tonight the RNC was like a Gathering of Old Men in need of face lifts. Jeff Toobin on CNN finally called it like it was and wondered where all the kids are. I guess Palin is bringing all of them with her, like a fertility goddess.

Anyway, the only people I trust anymore are Obama, Biden, Keith Olbermann, and Mudflats Blogger! Keep on Keepin’ On!

This could have been SOOO much easier for Bristol, for Levi, for the family….and for AMERICA to stomach….if in doing the intro, Levi was there and he was introduced THEN as Bristols fiance and father of their grandbaby! SIMPLE for us who are not all hung up on the sex education thing! The way it was rolled out certainly LOOKS like it was not MEANT to come out till AFTERWARDS if anyone even KNEW!!!

2 09 2008
Mil

Poor, poor Bristol.

I don’t think her mother asked her. I think of my own mother when I think of Bristol now.

If I had been so unfortunate as to not have had access to birth control and sex ed… And I ended up pregnant… My mom would have dropped everything possible to be by my side. Especially if I was 17. (I’m actually in my twenties, so this is indeed hypothetical.) I could never imagine my mother deciding to accept a veep nod if I were in such a state. My dad is involved in my life too. My parents are still married and both care for me very much. They are a partnership, so I’m not saying that since my mom is a woman she would automatically stay home for me. I’m saying that my mom versus Palin would do a lot better job of thinking of me.

Poor Bristol.

2 09 2008

I have a feeling the GOP is going to give a hero’s welcome to Bristol’s boyfriend at their convention. They will spotlight him as a decent and responsible young man who is doing the right thing and marrying the 17-year old whose forthcoming child he fathered. And between the lines the message will be that a young black man wouldn’t have the character and integrity to do the same.

Cynical? You Betcha. I’ve been paying attention for the last eight years….

Today has been fun, weirder than I ever thought weird could be, informative,
appalling, and exhausting. My obsessive-compulsiveness has kicked into high gear and nothing else got done here in my little office in North Carolina. My challenge tomorrow is to work first and surf later. I love your work MudFlats and between you and HuffPo’s bloggers, it’s been impossible to tear myself away form the puter.

Regarding Levi being hijacked to the Twin Cities: It’s leaving me speechless and
falls into the appalling category noted above. One of the commenters mentioned Child Protective Services and it’s a valid comment. Bristol Palin is no doubt living under her mother’s rigid control. She has already caused her (Sarah)embarrassment (although Sarah brought it on herself) and it could quite possibly be the first of the ‘scandals’ that forces Sarah Palin to bow out of the race. So aside from now having to live with the fact that her pregnancy was outed to the entire world on television she is going to have to bear some unjust form of guilt when Mommy Dearest looses her ‘big chance’ at fame and power. I’d like to be a fly on the wall at their home next month. Or maybe not because it will be heartbreaking and I’d be powerless to help this child….

So when they march that girl and her boyfriend onstage to make the impression of a big happy family I’ll whisper a little prayer for her…..

I also noticed the husband swallowing hard, like he was scared stiff. Despite the suit, he looked very unsophisticated, and Palin, well, do you think she might have some Mary Kay to sell us. Did anyone notice that Sarah barely picked up Trig during the announcement or her husband? THat seemed really weird to me that throughout the entire announcement, she is pushing forward the youngest daughter, but never calls for her son. And why wasn’t the FATHER TODD holding the baby? Why is Bristol holding the baby the entire time. And during their next campaign stop, why was Bristol back in the tour bus with the baby instead of TODD. If Sarah and Todd are indeed the parents and if he will be the one caring for the kids while Sarah is off playing VP, why isn’t he doing so now. Again, I don’t believe that is her baby. I have a child and I cannot see myself making the decisions that she is making. She truly is not putting her family first.

someone above asked how the soon to be newly weds are going to support themselves.

here’s the answer

if you people do not get out there and spread this site around so that the rest of the people in the country figure out what is going on the newly weds are going to be supported by you. they will be living at the white house with uncle johnny and aunty cin.

get the picture?

and where are your children going to be?

yes, doing the ‘work of god’ as prescribed by your elected leaders.
fighting ‘the enemy’ who are fighting for what?

yes, now you see it. ‘the enemy’ is also ‘doing the work of god’

same work different version of the tooth fairy story.

copy paste copy paste copy paste.

AKMuckracker is doing every one of us with children the most amazingly graceful favor that could possibly be done so let’s be equally gracious and get the word out.

The probability that this woman will step out or be pushed out is low but the possibility that you can make a difference so that she does not get
the chance to send your children to their certain death is high.

Just to it. put links to this site in ten places every day for the next ten days.

make the internet work as it was designed to work. to connect sane and rational thinkers with sane and rational thinking. and to get enough of that out there so that it starts to overwhelm the un-sane and irrational non thinkers.

Hellavajewel – it’s insulting all right. So much of it! My guess is that serious money was mobilized to convince this young man – who has stated on his myspace page that he “doesn’t want kids” – to step up to the plate anyway.

But why they are making a spectacle of Bristol this way beyond any spiritual or mental health guidance anyone could devise! This is naked advertising (and thus abuse) of an unborn child (and her teenage mother) for the purpose of appearing saintly (somehow) – in hopes of salvaging a rapidly sinking campaign.

The poor 17 year old kid can’t even go through the ordeal with a tranquilizer because she’s pregnant! Is John McCain, who himself was tortured, turning into a torturer himself now? By parading this poor prisoner in front of tv and millions of viewers – to record it all for her endless shame?

I’m just saddened that an extreme right religious woman has been picked as the GOP VP. “Creationism” still at the helm – President Bush probably believes it too. One of my favorite people on earth wants me to read Mark Levin and to study the fox webpage. Mark Levin has Jerome Corsi as required reading. They also read Ann Coulter and thinks that she has been ‘taken out of context’.

And this person seems convinced that because I am young I must be brainwashed into the cult of Obamaism.

*sigh* We are on completely different sides of the fence. I gave them the link to this site and after visiting, the word ‘lies’ was used.

I’m going to have to ban all discussions of politics between us. I don’t think we can manage a civil debate much longer. After having been “addicted” to getting any news about this “unknown” thrown into the spotlight, and carefully trying to look at the “big” picture and what is coming across MSM, I think the bottom line here is that we have to keep our eye on the “prize” and not on this unknown. The Rove machine has been ingenious in detouring American voters and to some extent us “angry liberals” from the real issues. While watching a Sarah Palin interview tonight, it suddenly struck me what the game plan is. Here is a “spunky”, attractive woman, with fundamentalist beliefs, questionable “vetting”, but true conservative, just ripe for the plucking of the Rove machine. The vetting was not vetting as we are accustomed to, but Rove vetting implies how quickly she can be molded to “spin”. The interview I watched included questions about her ethics investigation and the firing. She answered, almost VERBATUM as Gonzalez when questioned about firings at Dept of Justice…ie. “it is “at-will” position which she is at liberty to do to take the dept. in a new direction!” That response has ROVE written all over it! She has willingly become the “spin” in this campaign, so the republicans can once again accuse the DEMS of smear, and inexperience, etc. etc. In saying all that, the “eye on the prize” is to continue to fight for change this without being dragged down to ROVE’S (or Palin”s) level of politics. Tricky…but I trust that truth will win in this fight.

I actually think McCain was being shrewd. The women is sexy in a wholesome way, dynamic. On top of that, she will bring in the hordes of Jesus Camp fanatics to the polling booths.

If they are elected, I will be sad for my country! I’m the polar opposite of her philosophy. And she is so unsophisticated, never traveled outside the US except her troop trip. The world will look down on her. I know remarkable Alaskans and she is not my cup of tea.

Any Hillary admirers surely would not like what Sarah Palin stands for.

The seemingly random Republican roundabouts are making me dizzy.

I actually laughed out loud when McCain’s main vetter seemed unsure when asked if Palin had any more scandals yet to come. They haven’t a freaking clue. I’m almost finding myself wondering if Palin was a bit manipulative and shady with her answers to the day before vetting committee. Seems like a perfect match if so.

It’s fairly obvious that “Baby Daddy” is going to be on a short leash so that everything that he says or does is closely monitored and scripted by the thugs to keep him away from the media circus. How sad for him to be robbed of his youth like this….so now Sarah Palin has another victim of her reckless ambition. He’s only 18 and his life is basically over. Sure he’ll travel, hang out with big money people and all, but he is through now, unless the ticket fails. Then maybe you could help him write a book!!!

I remember coming back from a 6AM class on Friday hearing about the Palin selection so I went to the wiki page. I wish I captured it because as I was reading it I got a 404 error, refreshed it and it was scrubbed. In front of my eyes. I stayed one step ahead of the censors on the myspace pages and the photos of the governor that have since been removed. Then I did the obligatory google and stumbled upon this gem of a blog and have read every word since. Thanks!

Is it true that Palin’s mother in law ran for Wasilla mayor and Palin didn’t endorse her? Is there some conflict there?

Wow!!

Obama to Appear on Fox on Thursday Night
By Jeff Zeleny
CHICAGO — Before Senator John McCain delivers his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday, Senator Barack Obama will make a marquee appearance of his own.

Call it counter-intuitive. He will appear on “The O’Reilly Factor” on Fox News Channel.

For Mr. Obama, it will be the first time in his presidential candidacy that he’s on Bill O’Reilly’s prime-time program. The appearance is intended to put Mr. Obama before a conservative audience, one week after drawing 40 million TV viewers at his own acceptance speech.

Mr. Obama has had a strained history with the network, which is owned by Rupert Murdoch. Is this a sign of burying the hatchet or simply politically smart programming? Stay tuned

Strangelet,
You make my point, when I heard she was the nominee I was incredoulous, …I thought then that Alaskans have much to contribute to the American vetting of Ms. Palin. My point is to Alaskans who are not used to this scrutiny…let us not fall to the level of high school gossip and look at the serious transgressions that there are apparently numerous and let us become truthtellers. In this mode I must say that after 22 wonderful years as an Alaska resident I moved on to the “outside” in 06 to work with Organized Labor and still miss my home up North.

I can’t believe Sarah Palin didn’t anticipate this. People keep asking what McCain was thinking by asking her to be his running mate. I want to know what she was thinking.

With this news breaking about her daughter, the campaign to make Palin look like Super-Mom has fizzled. Now the truth is showing. Women can have as many babies as they want and hustle a “career.” But having a lot of babies and exercising good parenting skills are two different things.

If Sarah Palin were as honorable as her supporters would have had us believe, she would have put the emotions of her children first, shielded them from this type of public scrutiny. Religious-right leanings aside, the woman seems selfish to me!

The Obama campaign is doing the right thing and not touching this with a 100-foot pole. Obama laid down the law when he said candidates’ families are off-limits. If there is any hint that his campaign is talking about this stuff, the Republicans will unleash a firestorm. You know that they love to demonize Obama, and acknowledging Palin’s family drama would just give the Republicans an excuse to attack and garner sympathy for her. They are already playing the ‘sexism’ card, even though they fail to recognize that McCain’s very choice of Palin is inherently sexist.

The way Obama and Biden responded to Steve Kroft’s question on ’60 Minutes’ was just right: damn her with faint praise, never mention her by name if possible, and equate her with McCain’s agenda. There’s enough dirt out there about her actual performance as mayor and governor that will be fair game for the Obama team.

Corie said:
“They are already playing the ’sexism’ card, even though they fail to recognize that McCain’s very choice of Palin is inherently sexist.”

I couldn’t agree more. The Palin selection is an insult more than anything. Because she is a sexy woman, it’s the right-wing-conservative-politician of stooping to the “sex sells” level. I wonder how many Republican senators, congressman, governors feel shined privately over the selection.

I think you should cool off a bit. The family didn’t want to disclose the pregnancy before the convention but were forced to. Naturally, once the bird is out, the new member of the family, Mr. Johnston, would join his future wife for the photo ops and other festivities and then the new family would fade in the background. What’s so scandalous here?

I think this woman’s family affairs are being unjustly and viciously picked apart here. Are Levi and Bristol good examples for American teenagers? Of course, not! But they are not running for office.
For eight years the hard-partying, binge-drinking Bush twins were largely left alone by the media and the public, why is everyone picking on Mrs Palin’s daughter? There is only one reason: she doesn’t pack the power, connections, pedigree and intimidation of the Bushes. It’s sad and pathetic.

Now, having said that, if the baby swap and fake belly stories prove to be correct, then all bets are off. But given the facts at hand, I don’t see a reason to make it such big deal that Levi Johnston is going to join the Palins at the convention.

Chill out and focus on the issues.

Barracuda
Take one look at a great barracuda’s toothy grin and you’ll understand why it has earned the nickname “Tiger of the Sea.”

With its sleek, torpedo-like body, dagger-like teeth, and ferocious appetite, the barracuda is built to hunt in the ocean.

So, is the barracuda a cold-blooded killer? You betcha! A barracuda is a predator because it needs to eat to survive. And it’s cold-blooded because all fish are cold-blooded. They adapt to the temperature of the water surrounding them.

Barracudas Are Fishy!

If you think a barracuda is fishy looking, you’re right. It’s a fish. A barracuda shares several traits with most other fish, in addition to being cold-blooded. It is a vertebrate — it has a spine. It lays eggs rather than giving birth to live young. And, it swims by moving its fins (including its tail).

HMMM… “fishy”, “has a spine”, “swims by moving its tail”, and “adapts to the temperature around it”, & yes, eats its young.

Hi,

So I can’t get enough of this stuff…Having just come back from a six-month stint in Juneau, imagine my surprise when I found out one morning that Palin is McCain’s choice for VP. Heck, I was one up on many because I actually knew who she was. Now, I’m a Texan and a Democrat, but I try to make informed decisions about whomever I vote for. In my time in Alaska, Palin failed to impress because of one main reason that no one is talking about. Let’s call it Juneau-Gate. No one (yet) has mentioned how she has systematically stripped hundreds of jobs from Juneau, basically for her own convenience. Now, if she had fought the highly contested issue of moving the capital publicly, I wouldn’t have issue with it. Instead, she did it quietly and underhandedly. Now, that’s just my take, what’s yours? Just wanted to bring up this point. I was doing a project when I was there and I was hit with this reality over and over (from several people in the Alaska Congress for that matter).

Anyhow, thank you for a wonderful blog. I needed to hear an Alaskan take on this whole thing because I just couldn’t see the people I met and worked with for so many months taking this decision lightly. Keep on keeping on and I will continue reading.

Divide the potential electorate up: those that weren’t going to vote; those that would only vote R; those that would only vote D; and independent and undecided voters. What impact does choosing Palin as VP have? Take out the middle two groups because no change with them. So, the calculation has to be: will her choice bring enough turned-off right wing voters back to the booth and sway enough undecideds in favor of 4 more years of GOP rule? Or, will the extremism she represents (that is revealed so excellently in this blog) steer undecideds towards Obama/Biden? I’m no expert but after a few news cycles I have got to believe that her choice is a negative for McCain. Let’s hope we can get back to the big issues dividing the candidates which should really decide this election.

Hello from Seoul, South Korea. As an American living overseas I’m watching this circus with dismay and hoping against hope that we don’t put an unqualified, neophyte politician and advocate of the Christian Right (with all due respect to Christians) into the White House. Thanks for your thorough “vetting” of Palin.

I’ve noticed the Repubs and even some in the media are crying “sexism” when it’s questioned who Palin could both perform the duties of a VP and raise her children. Wasn’t it the Christian Right who harped on how moms should stay at home rather than be working mothers? Well, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson has suddenly seen the light and now thinks it’s OK to be a working mother after years of saying the opposite:
http://www.bestsyndication.com/?q=20080901_dobson_says_mothers_should_work_not_stay_at_home.htm

The MSM (AKA neo-con media) is currently in propaganda mode like in the run-up to the illegal invasion of Iraq echoing the administration lies.

If McCain is president, survives and does not require to tap Sarah Palin as Commander-in-chief, we should be ok, as McCain had said “In the 21st century, nations don’t invade other nations.”

But Sarah Palin does become president, we can only hope she does not get orders from God, like Bush did.

I wonder if McCain (or his handlers) have not chosen Palin deliberately, precisely because of all the unsavory aspects of her governing/family. She has now become a rallying point that will make it hard for people who are critical to not look like they are beating up on poor Sarah. All the governing issues are so complex the average person is going to ignore them. Personnel issues? Oh, she had a right to dismiss those she disagreed with. In bed with corrupt politicians? People don’t know who Ted Stevens is and don’t care, and anyway, that was before she saw the light. Elected mayor by a ‘landslide’ with a mere 800+ votes? The high school I work in is bigger than that. Well, she WAS elected to an ‘executive’ job. Maybe my principal, also a capable 40-odd year old woman with two adorable small children, should be tapped as McCain’s next running mate.

The stuff won’t stick, because the talking heads won’t mention it and the alleged MSM might print it but no one will read it. (if they can read—oh, I take that back. They can read enough nonsense about Obama being a Muslim and then have the nerve to accuse liberals of being ‘unfair.’)

The Republicans have proven they will do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to win. They lie with straight faces or huge smiles, all of them rattling off the same talking points like robots. Perhaps McCain is an evil genius who has dicovered if you lie often enough, people will be so exhausted they’ll believe anything.

Palin has a right to her family’s privacy, but with this stunt of including the self-proclaimed ‘f-in’ redneck’ who states ‘if you f— with me I’ll kick your a–‘ at the convention, she has proven she will use her family to gain some sort of deranged sympathy vote. If anything, this will remind teenagers to be careful what they say on their MySpace pages and to wear condoms. Palin has incorporated herself as a company called ‘Rouge Cou,’ or redneck, so I guess she’s a self-proclaimed redneck too. I sure hope I don’t have to ever call her Vice President.

Banned Books Week is coming up at the end of the month. Go read one in honor of Sarah Palin.

I had this thought while waking up this morning, possibly influenced by Thomas Frank’s book, ‘What’s the Matter With Kansas?’ Palin is actually a brilliant pick, and while they may not have planned on her family issues coming up, with them and the rest of her background she is the perfect values voter distraction from the real issues. She has gotten McCain tremendous press and will continue to do so, and he wouldn’t drop her now because she is going to get him tons of votes, plus the distractions from the fact that a vote for him is a vote for 4 more years of bad policy we can’t afford.

I want all of the truth about Palin to come out but meantime, we need to energize the progressive/Obama base in the way that Palin is energizing McCain’s. Let’s not get distracted from all of the other dirty tricks that will happen during this election (voting machines come to mind) and let’s do what we can to get Obama elected.

washington post
Palin Slashed Funding for Teen Moms
By Paul Kane
ST. PAUL — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee who revealed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, earlier this year used her line-item veto to slash funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live.

After the legislature passed a spending bill in April, Palin went through the measure reducing and eliminating funds for programs she opposed. Inking her initials on the legislation — “SP” — Palin reduced funding for Covenant House Alaska by more than 20 percent, cutting funds from $5 million to $3.9 million. Covenant House is a mix of programs and shelters for troubled youths, including Passage House, which is a transitional home for teenage mothers.

According to Passage House’s web site, its purpose is to provide “young mothers a place to live with their babies for up to eighteen months while they gain the necessary skills and resources to change their lives” and help teen moms “become productive, successful, independent adults who create and provide a stable environment for themselves and their families.”

Palin’s own daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant and has plans to wed.

“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family,” Palin said in a statement released by the McCain campaign. “We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy, as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”

Earlier today the Associated Press reported that Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, opposed funding to prevent teen pregnancies, a position that Palin also took as governor. “The explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support,” she wrote in a 2006 questionnaire distributed among gubernatorial candidates.

Reporters asked McCain in November 2007 whether he supported grants for sex education in the United States, whether such programs should include directions for using contraceptives and whether he supports President Bush’s policy of promoting abstinence.

“Ahhh, I think I support the president’s policy,” McCain said.

A quick look round the GOP convention site, I searched for who was an expert in climate change …….

http://portal.gopconvention2008.com/search/keyword.aspx?keyword=Climate%20Change

It seems to come up with only one person who claims expertise on climate change, and yes, you’ve guessed it. Sarah Palin.

A few questions. On the speeches last night, did they mention the infrastructure at all? I suspect they didn’t.

The republicans want to make a big deal over her having a downs syndrome baby. Even though the statistics from the cdc on the chances of having a baby with downs syndrome is very low when you compare it to the autism rates. One of the rebuttals to this would be in families where there is a special needs child, fifty percent of those marriages end up in divorce. Special needs children need a stable environment. Being in politics is not a stable environment for the family.

What is Palin’s stance on special education and special needs? Did she increase the budget or decrease it? Did her position change after she found out she would have a special needs child? Or did it remain the same? What about group homes for the special needs children once they become adults? Did she increase the social service budget or slash it?

Finally, the republicans are making a very big mistake by making this election on abortion. Want to fire up democrats, especially women in the democratic party? Say you will outlaw all abortions. Which is what they are trying to do.

Washington Post: INTENSIVE BRIEFINGS
Before Speech, Running Mate Gets Some Coaching

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/02/AR2008090203337.html?hpid=topnews

Not anticipating that McCain would choose a woman as his running mate, the speech that was prepared in advance was “very masculine,” according to campaign manager Rick Davis, and “we had to start from scratch.”

Republican tool.

OPEN LETTER TO JOHN MCCAIN, PALIN, EXTREME RIGHT WING REPUBLICANS, AND PRESIDENT BUSH:

You speak of REFORM? This is the REFORM PARTY? Reform to what? To your way of thinking or GET OUT OF THE WAY? So if I don’t reform to your way of thinking, are you going to fire me too? Am I now UN-AMERICAN and UN-PATRIOTIC?

After watching last nights convention speeches, as a Republican Conservative, I am disgusted to see that the Republican Party is creating further divide in America. It is not an INCLUSIVE Party. It does not speak for ALL AMERICANS or ALL CHRISTIANS. The Republican Party has turned into a movement for the extreme right wing evangelicals! It is an EXCLUSIVE CLUB that is DIVISIVE, NOT INCLUSIVE!

COUNTRY FIRST? This country belongs to MANY people, not just your brand of Republicanism! You don’t get to decide who is PATRIOTIC and who is not! You don’t get to say who is a Christian and who is not!

Shame on You President Bush. When you said that McCain was going to stand up to the “ANGRY LEFT” we know you were really talking about the MAJORITY OF AMERICANS who will not REFORM or CONFORM to how you’ve been running this country!!! You just reinforced what the rest of us Americans have known all along, that you and the right wing evangelical Republican’s are DIVISIVE and NOT INCLUSIVE of ALL Americans!

My concern is that this woman is so narcissistic that she is blinded by her own reflection in the camera. She continues to make decisions that are horrifically mind boggling. I can’t even begin to figure out where this line of thinking stems from. However, SHE IS CONSISTENT!!!

No one in their right mind (with all of these skeletons), would have accepted McCain’s offer. This is so ugly.

If the reps decide to dump her (and she will be the last to know) it is going to be ugly because they will dump her and never speak of her again. They will have to dissassociated themselves from this lunacy.

I usually dismiss the polls, but this is a good sign that American women have not all lost their minds:

From http://www.gallup.com (http://www.gallup.com/poll/109975/Obama-Gains-Overall-McCain-Among-GOP-Women.aspx) —

“Previous Gallup analysis has suggested that McCain’s selection of a woman as his vice-presidential running mate might have the most impact on independent white women, who before the Democratic Convention were essentially split down the middle in terms of candidate support.

These data show, however, that at least initially, McCain has lost ground among both white independent women and white independent men (and among Democrats of both genders) since the convention and his vice-presidential selection.

Instead, the data suggest that McCain has in essence fought a rear-guard action of sorts among white women of his own GOP base, building their support to a degree even as he was losing support among independents and Democrats of both genders.

It is possible, but not provable with these data, that McCain’s selection of a woman, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, as his vice-presidential running mate may have had the effect of solidifying support among women of his own party.

The Republicans no doubt hope that this week’s convention, and in particular Palin’s address on Wednesday, will help them make inroads not only among white Republican women, but also among independent (and perhaps Democratic) women.”

Latest I’ve read on “troopergate” sorry no link to supply. Probably HuffingtonPost on maybe even CNN.

The good Governor Palin is thinking of filing an ethics complaint against herself to take this investigation out of the hands of the independent investigators, and the state legislature, and make it a “personnel matter” i.e. to have it investigated by the three person State Personnel Board that she appointed.

Legislature is not impressed. Says it won’t make any difference, they will keep on keeping on with what they are doing, and subpoena her, if need be to get her testimony.

Lordy, I can’t wait for the tv series, or the movie on this.

She wants privacy for her daughter, so she is flying the baby’s daddy to the RNC. Well….. that should assure them of all the privacy they need, in front of several thousand people, and several hundreds national, and world press.

Your blog has almost moved up ahead of me checking my fantasy baseball team. (Which is the first thing I read every day.) You are now running a close second.

Thanks, and keep the news coming. We, in the lower 48 are grateful as heck.

I’m in England and we’re watching the whole thing with utter amazement. Our right-wing press is hailing Palin as some sort of Milf messiah but people in the street see it more like a scene from Idiocracy. We’ve had similar things here with Conservative politicians over the past few decades preaching the joys of marriage & family life then getting caught having affairs/going gay/dying in perculiar sex acts, so we’re pretty familiar with the hypocracy thing. Whats more disturbing is this religious mania where the Repubs seem to view Christianity in the same way as the Mad Mullahs view Islam. The world really doesn’t need to be torn asunder because the Pres thinks God is commanding them to wipe out unbelievers. Please Americans elect someone who isn’t a religious maniac! And being pro-science would help – people love the Americans when they do awesome things with technology. But that assumes a good education system that doesn’t base the dating of planet Earth on Archbishop Usher’s 17th century musings!

Sam Harris today in the L.A. Times:

Americans have an unhealthy desire to see average people promoted to positions of great authority. No one wants an average neurosurgeon or even an average carpenter, but when it comes time to vest a man or woman with more power and responsibility than any person has held in human history, Americans say they want a regular guy, someone just like themselves. President Bush kept his edge on the “Who would you like to have a beer with?” poll question in 2004, and won reelection.

This is one of the many points at which narcissism becomes indistinguishable from masochism. Let me put it plainly: If you want someone just like you to be president of the United States, or even vice president, you deserve whatever dysfunctional society you get. You deserve to be poor, to see the environment despoiled, to watch your children receive a fourth-rate education and to suffer as this country wages — and loses — both necessary and unnecessary wars.

OMG. The ADN is reporting that in an attempt to stop the legislative investigation of Palin’s firing of Monegan, Palin’s lawyer has submitted an “ethics complaint” regarding that matter to the Alaska State AG. In other words, Palin’s lawyer is trying to get the entire Monegan matter to be investigated and decided by the Alaska Personnel Board (made up of three Palin appointees). Palin’s lawyer will claim that the Alaska Personnel Board (again, made up entirely of people appointed by Palin) has the exclusive right to make the determination as to whether Palin did anything wrong.

I was going to make a comment yesterday that I thought Palin’s lawyer would end up being her Fred Fielding (the White House Counsel who, to date, has been effective in blocking Congress from interviewing Karl Rove, Harriet Miers and Josh Bolton on the firing of the US Attorneys – you remember those folks, don’t you, the ones who have spit on the House and Senate subpoenas???)

Anyway, I digress. I don’t mean to be the voice of doom, but I think that the Monegan investigation is going to go unresolved before the election in November. Shit.

This Dutch article (from our most populistic right-wing newspaper) has been mentioned several times in the comments above:

McCain trots op Palin

WASHINGTON – De Republikeinse presidentskandidaat John McCain heeft dinsdag laten weten dat hij „erg trots” is op zijn running mate Sarah Palin. McCain liet zich voor het eerst uit over zijn rechterhand na de bekendmaking dinsdag van de zwangerschap van haar 17-jarige dochter.

I’m not sure what attracts your attention, since I can find not so much news in it. It just says that JMC declared he is ‘very proud’ of his running mate SP, this being his first statement about her after the announcement of the pregnancy.

3 09 2008
Plwalsh

I’d say Harris is wrong on this.

Americans don’t want average people in high office. They want an ordinary citizen to rise up out of their midst to brilliant heights. This is the appeal of Sarah Palin– that woman I chat with at our sons’ hockey games who is going to Washington to do God’s work.

This is the myth of Cinicinnatus, the brilliant general called from his plow to save the nation who, once the nation is safe, gives up power and goes back to his farm. The idea has been around since the Revolution.

The problem is that, with the rise of media, most of our Crincinnati have been fakes– privileged or bought-off politicians working for economic elites, professional front men and women who only pretend to the common touch.

Sarah Palin is nowhere near average. She has extra extra large political ambitions with the extra extra small morals to go with them.

3 09 2008
A fly on the wall

I can’t help but think this is partially intentional. The McCain of the 90’s was known for getting his revenge eventually, no matter how long it took. He’s always been somewhat of a hothead and kind of a dick in general.

He’s fairly areligious, and can barely conceal his contempt for many of the fundies (and vice versa). He’s not a business-head corporo-Repub on CNBC arguing growth indicators or economic policy. He hates the Bushes, especially from 2004, with the whole illegitimate black baby thing.

He can’t go after the moderates because he’s chained to his nutcase bases. Word is that if he would have picked Lieberman, there would have been open revolt. So he’s left in no-man’s land.

It looks to me like he’s serving up the religious far-right a “be careful what you wish for” lesson before he’s slow-roasted on a spit by the Obama campaign. Like he really gives a shit– he’s got more houses than he can count and more money than time left on this earth.

The “backroom players” probably gave him a list of “vetted” people, and he called their bluffs like the complete bastard he is. There’s a very real possibility that the greater American public will be completely repulsed by Palin, although this may take some time to develop. This may lead toward a pop-culture mockery of the religious right and equate to a hearty McCain defeat come November. This will greatly weaken the fundies’ hand going forward.

If this doesn’t occur, I wouldn’t be too surprised to see a 3rd party splinter off. We already had talk of a Bloomberg / Hagel independent run earlier. You can definitely see room for a party for real fiscal conservatism / economic policy, real security / energy focus, enough watered-down libertarianism / constitutionalism to draw most of the Ron Paul crowd, etc. If they were to make a clean break from the evangelicals and give up stupid crap like anti-gay legislation, overturning Roe v. Wade (vs simply a late-term general ban with plenty of exceptions / loopholes), etc, they could be a force to be reckoned with.

Palindrome for Sarah’s car window on the way to the hospital “NO TOT ON”

3 09 2008
PalinGate

Finally, an Editorial in the Washington Post is asking why on earth Sarah Palin would fly from Texas to Alaska AFTER going into labor ONE MONTH EARLY with a SPECIAL NEEDS BABY. Why aren’t any of the major news outlets AT LEAST asking these questions??? THis isn’t a RUMOR.. it’s FACT. This has nothing to do with spreading the Trig rumor. This is plain fact, and for the courtesy of the millions of voters out there, Sarah Palin needs to have the decency to answer the questions.

Even if I had FALSE labor with a special needs baby, I would get myself to the nearest hospital. Apparently, the hospital where Trig was born doesn’t even have a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. So, her water breaks, she flys across the hemisphere, lands in Anchorage, drives one hour to Wasilla (bypassing 2 major hospitals), only to end up at a hospital that doesn’t even have a NICU. Why the heck cant our questions be answered? WE ARE VOTERS, AND WE SHOULD DEMAND ANSWERS. VOTERS HAVE RIGHTS TO HAVE OUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED, and don’t any of you forget that.

Sorry for my “tone” but I’m so sick of the media tip-toeing around this. Just answer our questions. It’s a FACT, not rumor.

Sue, Your report is exactly the kind of Palin things that we need to start focusing on.

We need to start complaining to the MSM to start covering Palin’s other issues and totally get away from any more discussions of Palin’s daughter, the boyfriend and either baby.

The Republicans are driving this conversation and using it to cover up all Palins other issues. Did you notice last night and today if you have the radio or TV on, how all the Repubs are complaining that the Dems are out of line attacking the Palin family? It’s as if a memo went out for them all to make the same comment. It’s all they are saying! If they say it enough, it will be perceived to be true even if it isn’t, by the vast majority of people who only form opinions based on soundbites.

It’s a trap and we are all, myself included , are falling into it and it is keeping the focus off of bigger flaws in this VP candidate.

We need to get busy counteracting this now!! Make some noise! Hold the MSM’s feet to the fire!

You forgot to mention that she didn’t even tell the plane crew that she was pregnant, let alone potentially in labor. If she had, they wouldn’t have let her on it.

I think it shows that this woman is just as reckless as McCain– and apparently just as big a liar. It didn’t take long after the selection for both of them to be caught in whoppers— hers that she rejected the “bridge to nowhere,” his that he knew about her daughter’s pregnancy before he picked her.

No wonder he called her his “soulmate.”

It really is just business as usual for Palin. Look at a distance and you see what she wants you to see. Look a little closer and you see a self centered, self absorbed, thin skinned, vindictive woman who knows no bounds when it comes to her, her image, and what she wants.

Sarah Palin also is more knee jerk in her responses to hard questions, seemingly without thinking, and then spins to present it in the “right” way.

See the “no one from my administration pressured Monagan.” (Except of course, Frank Bailey, Annette Krietzer, Ivy Fry, and my husband Todd.) It is still a lie, even if your fingers are crossed behind your back.

Perhaps I have just read too much about this and have superior knowledge, but even the local paper (ADN) is soft of this story.

From this article: Keller said she never hung out with Palin but intends to vote for the McCain-Palin ticket. With little prompting, she repeated the McCain campaign talking point about Palin having ‘more executive experience than anybody on the ticket.'”

Keller, the mayor of Wasilla, is Sarah Palin’s cousin, and Palin backed her (rather than her mother-in-law) in the election.

It is unreal how this whole thing is being vetted and reported.

Kimbers,

I agree with wholeheartedly! Everytime I see another headline about her daughter, or hear/read another reporter asking someone about her daughter’s pregnancy instead of “troopergate”…..I can’t help but scream at the computer/TV: Talk about Troopergate! Talk about the lie she told about the Bridge to Nowhere! Expose her “executive experience”! You are diminishing the REAL ISSUES but focusing on an immaterial and sympathic issue!

You put a lot of work into your list of the MSM (Only yesterday I figured out what that acronym stood for)! I emailed the writer of an article on the Washington Post just yesterday warning him of the consequences if he continues. I will use your list and email many of them.

Please everyone, stop the personal attacks on her family that I see every where on line. We have MUCH BIGGER and LEGITMATE concerns that we should be talking about instead! Don’t shut down the conversation by losing credibility! It will backfire….and I for one am not willing to endure the nightmare that would be if she were…that “heartbeat” away from the other nightmare Iwhom I used to like 8 years ago…pity).

Just want to get something off my chest. I became pregant as a teenager also. My parents let ME tell who I wanted to tell, and when. They were very supportive and understanding. Everything was done in a way that I was most comfortable. Being young, my mother quit her job, and spent the next 2 years helping me, so that I was able to contuine my education. Without my mom by my side daily, I’m not sure how things would have turned out. As it stands now, I have a wonderful 30 year old son, and 3 perfect grandchildren. For this mother to choose this path for her daughter is horrible. I beleive that this poor child didn’t even enter her thoughts. If she can do this to her own child, image what she would do to this country. Thank you.

I’m guessing that it would probably be the other way around. I’d wager that the Republican “brand” will be irrevocably tarnished in the near term by this stunt and the last 8 years of nonstop spending of borrowed money. With the advent of some serious plutocrat-style funding (Bloomberg, etc), it’d be much easier to come up with a new platform rather than reform one with so much baggage.

Time will tell.

The New York Times Editorial

September 3, 2008
Candidate McCain’s Big Decision
More often than not, the role of a vice president is a minor one, unless some tragedy occurs. But a presidential nominee’s choice of a running mate is vitally important. It is his first executive decision and offers an important insight into how that nominee would lead the nation.
If John McCain wants voters to conclude, as he argues, that he has more independence and experience and better judgment than Barack Obama, he made a bad start by choosing Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.
Mr. McCain’s supporters are valiantly trying to argue that the selection was a bold stroke that shows their candidate is a risk-taking maverick who — we can believe — will change Washington. (Mr. Obama’s call for change — now “the change we need” — has become all the rage in St. Paul.)
To us, it says the opposite. Mr. McCain’s snap choice of Ms. Palin reflects his impulsive streak: a wild play that he made after conservative activists warned him that he would face an all-out revolt in the party if he chose who he really wanted — Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut.
Why Mr. McCain would want to pander to right-wing activists — who helped George W. Bush kill off his candidacy in the 2000 primaries in a particularly ugly way — is baffling. Frankly, they have no place to go. Mr. McCain would have a lot more success demonstrating his independence, and his courage, if he stood up to them the way he did in 2000.
As far as we can tell, Mr. McCain and his aides did almost no due diligence before choosing Ms. Palin, raising serious questions about his management skills. The fact that Ms. Palin’s 17-year-old daughter is pregnant is irrelevant to her candidacy. There are, however, very serious questions about her political past and her ideology.
If Mr. McCain wanted to break with his party’s past and choose the Republicans’ first female vice presidential candidate, there are a number of politicians out there with far greater experience and stature than Ms. Palin, who has been in Alaska’s Statehouse for less than two years.
Before she was elected governor, she was mayor of a tiny Anchorage suburb, where her greatest accomplishment was raising the sales tax to build a hockey rink. According to Time magazine, she also sought to have books banned from the local library and threatened to fire the librarian.
For Mr. McCain to go on claiming that Mr. Obama has too little experience to be president after almost three years in the United States Senate is laughable now that he has announced that someone with no national or foreign policy experience is qualified to replace him, if necessary.
Senator Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who has been one of Mr. McCain’s most loyal friends, said Tuesday that he was certain that Ms. Palin would take the right positions on issues like Iraq, Russia’s invasion of Georgia and Iran’s nuclear weapons ambitions. That seemed based largely on his repeated assertion that Ms. Palin would be tended by Mr. McCain’s foreign policy advisers. That was not much of an endorsement.
Some of the things Ms. Palin has had to say in the recent past about foreign policy are especially worrisome. In a speech last June to her former church in Wasilla, Ms. Palin said the war in Iraq was “a task that is from God.” Mr. Bush made similar claims as he rejected all sound mortal advice on how to conduct the war.
Mr. McCain, Mr. Graham and others also claim that Ms. Palin is a fearless reformer who is committed to fighting waste, fraud and earmarks. Ms. Palin did show courage taking on some of the Alaska Republican Party’s most sleazy politicians. But she also was an eager recipient of earmarked money as a mayor and governor.
Mayor Palin gathered up $27 million in subsidies from Washington, $15 million of it for a railroad from her town to the ski resort hometown of Senator Ted Stevens, now under indictment for failing to report gifts.
The Republicans are presenting Ms. Palin as a crusader against Mr. Stevens’s infamous “Bridge to Nowhere.” The record says otherwise; she initially supported Mr. Stevens’s boondoggle, diverting the money to other projects when the bridge became a political disaster. In her speech to the Wasilla Assembly of God in June, Ms. Palin said it was “God’s will” that the federal government contribute to a $30 billion gas pipeline she wants built in Alaska.
Mr. McCain will make his acceptance speech on Thursday, and Ms. Palin will speak on Wednesday. Those two appearances will go a long way to forming voters’ views of this Republican ticket.
As Senator Graham noted, Mr. McCain has to reach out beyond the party’s loyal base. “We’re going to have to win this thing,” he said. “This is not our race to lose.”
Mr. McCain’s hurdles are substantial. To start, he has to overcome Mr. Bush’s record of failures. (The president addressed the convention Tuesday night and now, McCain strategists fervently hope, will retire quietly to the Rose Garden.) That record includes the disastrous war in Iraq, a ballooning deficit, the mortgage crisis — and the list goes on.
To address those many problems, this country needs a leader with sound judgment and strong leadership skills. Choosing Ms. Palin raises serious questions about Mr. McCain’s qualifications.

Not much time to write so just a few thoughts:

1. Re: baby – there is so much “information” on this issue it is pretty hard to make sense of it all. Timelines are important, especially around Bristol’s absence from school for “mono” and pictures which allegedly show a baby bump in 2007. Is there a chance that Trig is Bristol’s baby and that she is not really pregnant? To cover up rumours regarding true mother of Trig they have decided to throw everyone off course by saying, “No, Bristol wasn’t pregnant then, she is pregnant now!”? Then, a few weeks from now they announce that she had a miscarriage. More sympathy from the right and the rumours about Sarah being the mother of Trig have died (so they hope). I know, sounds incredible and only a truly immoral person would dare put the other parties up to it, but nothing in politics (whatever party) would truly surprise me. I would be shocked if this played out, but the truth is sometime stranger than fiction. Hope it is not the case, but if it does happen I want to be able to say I thought it was at least possible 🙂

2. Will Bristol be wearing an engagement ring tonight at the convention?

Well, I’m gonna say this and some people might get mad but I don;t care:

How is Sarah Palin, a mother with 5 kids, one who happens to be special needs, and one with a baby on the way, going to trot around the world, solve domestic problems, perform all duties as VP, AND still be an involved mother?

I know I will get the “women can do ANYTHING” bit from some people, but HELLO!! I am a mother of three small children, none having special needs, and I can tell you this-there is NO WAY that I could commit myself to something as important as #2 of this country, and still be the mother to my children that they need me to be.

Now I’m not saying women shouldn’t work. I am a school teacher and work very hard myself. But I’m home every night, cook supper every night, help with the school projects, attend all the games, make cupcakes for the school parties, do the laundry and other cleaning ect…… AND by the end of the day I am pooped out.

Is she just planning to farm the kids out to everyone else? Little Trig is going to need 24 hour care FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. How does being VP fit into this???

Every women that I have conversed with about SP has said the same thing: How does she plan to do this with 5 kids, a special needs child, and a grandbaby on the way????

O know that this will be thought of as sexist, as the McBush campaign is trying to play it off this way, and it seems the media don;t want to ask it but I’m freaking serious. I don;t want to hear the “I’m a strong women and can multitask”. Well guess what, I’m a school teacher and I see everyday what happens when the parents, especially the mother is not involved in the childs life.

Okay thats my rant.

I find it interesting how the conservative mind works. When Palin’s nomination was first announced, my conservative friends? seemed hesitant about what to think. Soon, however, I heard them repeating exactly what was being said on Rush Limbo and other conservative programs and blogs – She has more experience than Obama – She made the hard decision of keeping her special needs child, etc.

When I pointed out that it was a lot easier to make the decision to keep a Downs Syndrome child if you weren’t the one who had to take care of him 24 hours a day, they seemed truly baffled by my logic. Again, the story of the pregnant teenaged daugther only reinforces their pro-life stand at any cost. All my points and arguments cannot seem to sway their view on the one point that matters to them – They kept the baby. When I tell them I’m glad they have choices, that’s what pro-choice means, they look at me as if I have committed the most grevioius sin. I can see that there is no changing their mind – these people who just days before, felt that mothers were best suited to stay home and raise their children. Go figure.

Palin files ethics complaint against self in ‘troopergate’
By Lisa Demer

McClatchy Newspapers

Wednesday, September 03, 2008

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin wants a state board to review the circumstances surrounding the dismissal of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan — taking the unusual step of making an ethics complaint against herself.

Her lawyer sent an “ethics disclosure” Monday night to Attorney General Talis Colberg. The governor asked that it go to the three-person Personnel Board as a complaint. While ethics complaints are usually confidential, Palin wants the matter open.

The lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, also asked the state legislature to drop its own investigation into the Monegan matter. He says the Personnel Board has jurisdiction over ethics.

A senator running the investigation immediately refused.

The 13-page document gives Palin’s view of a controversy that’s dogged her for weeks in Alaska. Questions about whether she or others in her family or administration pressured Monegan to fire her ex-brother-in-law, state Trooper Mike Wooten, are now getting intense national attention with her newfound prominence on the national stage. Republican Sen. John McCain announced Friday that she’s his pick to be vice president.

Under state law, the board must hire an independent counsel for complaints against the governor to determine whether evidence of a violation of the state ethics act exists.

“Governor Palin believes it will find no conceivable violation of the Ethics Act,” her complaint says. She wants the investigation “to put these matters to rest.”

The legislature plans to go forward with its investigation, said Sen. Hollis French, an Anchorage Democrat and former state prosecutor who is project director for the case.

That investigation isn’t just examining potential abuse of power by the governor, but also others in her administration, French said.

“We’re going to proceed. If they want to proceed, that’s perfectly within their right but it doesn’t diminish our right to do so,” he said.

The legislature’s special counsel Steve Branchflower so far has not been able to depose either Palin or her husband, Todd. Van Flein indicated the governor likely will not agree to a deposition unless lawmakers turn the matter over to the Personnel Board.

“Assuming you agree to submit to proper jurisdictional process, we can check the governor’s schedule to see when she and the first gentleman are available for an interview,” Van Flein wrote.

He also warned that all communications need to go through the lawyers. He said he had recently learned that Branchflower tried to call Todd Palin directly “on a secure and confidential line. This represents a serious security breach that we may be obligated to report to the Secret Service.”

This isn’t the first time Palin has lodged a complaint that went before the state Personnel Board.

In late 2004, the former Wasilla mayor joined then state Rep. Eric Croft, an Anchorage Democrat, to seek an investigation into whether then Attorney General Gregg Renkes broke the law through his investments in an energy company that stood to benefit from a state trade deal.

In the days after he resigned in February 2005, Renkes settled with the board and the Palin-Croft complaint was dismissed.

Tom Daniel, an Anchorage labor and employment lawyer hired by the board in the Renkes case, took a quick look at Palin’s complaint Tuesday.

“It appears that the governor has filed an ethics complaint against herself. … This is very unusual because ethics complaints typically are filed against others,” Daniel wrote in an e-mail responding to a Anchorage Daily News query.

Asked whether the personnel board could take the investigation away from the legislature — as Palin wants to do — Daniel answered: “I’ve never looked at that issue, but I can’t see why filing a complaint with the personnel board would deprive the legislature of the right to conduct its own investigation.”

The ethics disclosure echoes points made in a four-page backgrounder on the Wooten matter released by the McCain/Palin campaign. Did Van Flein write the background paper on Wooten for the campaign? He didn’t answer that question when asked in an e-mail Tuesday evening.

Wooten was married to Palin’s sister, Molly McCann, and as recently as this summer, they were still struggling over child custody and visitation.

Among key claims in Palin’s complaint:

—Special Agent Bob Cockrell of the governor’s security detail told Todd Palin to let Monegan know about Wooten’s threats against Chuck Heath, who is Palin’s father and was Wooten’s father-in-law.

—Monegan never told the governor or Todd Palin that Wooten had been disciplined over complaints brought by the family that included tasering his stepson, illegally shooting a moose and telling others that Heath would “eat a f—-ing lead bullet” if he helped his daughter get an attorney for the divorce. Wooten ultimately was suspended for five days by troopers but the family says they only learned that when the conflict spilled into public after Monegan’s firing. In her complaint, Palin calls the suspension “a slap on the wrist.”

—Recently, Wooten’s supervisor intervened when he wouldn’t return the children after a visit, the complaint says. Wooten warned his ex-wife he was going to get her and Palin, the complaint says. “There is evidence suggesting that Wooten was following the governor,” it says.

Palin is facing another ethics complaint, filed by a former state employee and political activist alleging her office used improper influence to award a state job.

Van Flein is a private lawyer with expertise in employment law hired by the Department of Law because of a potential conflict of interest by Attorney General Talis Colberg, who had contacted Monegan about Wooten. Van Flein is representing the governor’s office though some Palin staff have their own lawyers.

Van Flein donated to Palin’s campaign for governor in 2006, but he also donated to Democrats.

The reason I want one of you Alaskans to come forward to prove Palin was Miss Congeniality and that Levi may have more than one kid, is that this kind of “lying” or “fraud” will be what brings her down. You can paint a pig white but it’s still a pig. The pregnancy of Bristol was first raised by a commenter on this blog (Thanks Sue Williams!) So that’s why these two comments raised here (or somewhere else) may have validity.

I’m willing to leave Bristol and Trig and even Levi out of the picture. But SP’s judgment and priorities and McCain’s are fair game.

Her failures of judgment include that trip from Dallas back to Alaska, and putting her own political ambitions ahead of the very real needs of her family. Given that she had legitimate reasons to reply, ‘Thanks, but no thanks” to McCain, she would not have relegated her daughter and infant son to her own political ambitions. In fact, putting family first should have endeared her to the GOP base and in no way made her less appealing to them in a future campaign.

Similarly, that John McCain would select someone so exquisitely unqualified as his running mate, and apparently with little or no vetting, speaks volumes about his judgment and decision-making processes. It also speaks loudly as to the question of personal ambition vs. country first.

McCain’s people have issued a new statement:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/03/mccains-new-palin-strateg_n_123527.html

“McCain’s New Strategy – Blame the Media”

“This nonsense is over,” declared senior campaign adviser Steve Schmidt in a written statement.

The statement stood out for its admission that Palin is under siege _ it condemns “this vetting controversy” _ and for its attempt to blunt questions about how rigorously McCain and his campaign explored the background of a candidate who may get the nation’s second most powerful job. It also suggested that Palin is a victim of gender bias in the media.

“The McCain campaign will have no further comment about our long and thorough process,” Schmidt said, lashing out at “the old boys’ network” that he says runs media organizations.

The only thing she may bring to it is she probably won’t sound like bushy, who when he reads these speeches one gets the feeling it’s the first time he’s heard the facts, that is if he’s even listening to himself!

Call me crazy but I have a theory that Trig’s father is Track Palin, who is heading to Iraq. I think the mother is an older woman, which would explain the Down Syndrome.

And here’s where it gets weird, follow me on this: Have you seen the photos of Sherry Johnston, Levi’s mother? http://news.search.yahoo.com/news/search?p=sherry+johnston&c=news_photos

She’s another “MILF” as the kids say. And she’s Trig’s real mother.
Crazy, huh? It would explain how quickly they grabbed Levi Johnston to be the stooge in the spotlight all of a sudden.

Seriously, if Bristol was really planning to marry Levi, what’s the delay? Waiting for a White House wedding?

Oh, she WILL give a terrific speech tonight. No question at all. She looks great and is a great performer and will do everything she is asked to do without batting an eyelash.

She could stand up and read a cookbook and the media would pronounce it a home run. The McCain campaign is run by a Rove operative who is playing the oldest trick in the book: attacking the media, thereby forcing them to give fawning coverage to prove their “balance.” Just wait. The reviews of tonight’s speech are baked in the cake.

But I don’t think it will matter, because that church of hers is going to scare the hell out of Jews, who hold the balance in Florida.

As for whether Sarah Palin is Trig’s mother, it’s old news. The mainstream media won’t touch it with a 10-foot pole, so we’ll just have to wait and see what the National Enquirer tells us. Personally, I doubt that Trig is Bristol Palin’s child. In a different thread here (“In the Land of Palin”) I laid out my reasons for that view.

RE: Sosad
You are right, McCain had to know this was going to happen. And where has all the media coverage gone, to Sarah. Is anyone talking about his age any more? Is anyone talking about him at all? Nope! It is all Sarah, all the time. When everyone goes to the polls in Nov. the only name they will know is Sarah. The media needs to get off of the family and back onto McCain. Yes, it is awful what she has done to her kids (drag them from Wasilla to the national media) but it is time to refocus and really look at what is important, granted I think her decision to allow her pregnant teenage daughter be bombarded by the media was a poor one, and I do think this reflects on her, the focus has got to get back to McCain. Or at least focus on what she has and hasn’t done. Someone needs to look at all the money that came into Wasilla. Also, it would be great if someone would take a look at the rest of the wonderful (I mean that sarcastically) governor’s state, the BUSH! Let’s take a look at what she has done for rural Alaska!

Ugh – thank you for making my day! It’s been quite some time since I’ve heard the name Ann Coulter. How’s her adams apple doing? Even mann Coulter is more qualified to be VP than is Sarah Palin.

How old is this Levi character? I’ve seen anything from 20 to 25. If he’s 20, then there’s probably no statutory violation according to the Alaska laws I’ve been able to view. Fortunately, he did his deed in Alaska where the laws are more allowing for older boys (men, biologically) to get it on with young teenage girls. Statutory rape? Not in Alaska! Even if there was, mommy wouldnt push for it because it might crimp her political ambitions.

Why is he going to the RNC? Is there a purpose to him being there? What’s he going to do, compare penis sizes with Newt Gingrich?

As for the comments about Track and his hockey playing – have you all forgotten the case in Reading, MA, a few years ago when one hockey dad beat another hockey dad to death at the arena? There was another case of hockey dad rage in MA – this time where the one guy was released from jail towards the end of July. Hockey parents are the worst of the worst of sports parents. Sarah Palin wears it like a badge of pride but when someone describes themselves as a “hockey mom” I think back to Chris Nilan’s father and how absolutely awful he was. A total jackass and boor.

But this could be fun. Imagine that Levi Johnston becomes a page. Barney Frank says hello to him. Or maybe Larry Craig taps his foot in the bathroom. Mommy dearest, aka VP Sarah Palin, goes bezerk. She grabs her hockey stick and starts hitting everything that moves. Picture that. Embarrassed now? Just wait. …

Tammy – yer a smart cookie. They want it both ways, but then isn’t that how Sarah Palin is being portrayed, i.e., a reformer when in fact she has been great buddies with Stevens and received campaign contributions from the same oil company, or how she’s portrayed as someone who stands on her own two feet when in fact she’s been busy nuzzling on the teat of federal earmarks?

Hypocrits. The whole bunch of them.

Ky – I absolutely agree. My guess is that Sarah Palin hasn’t really had too much experience doing things a mother does. Afterall, she’s been busy pursuing her political ambitions and working out to pay attention to what’s going on at her house. Her mother does all that, trying not to repeat the mistakes she made with Sarah.

the most hardcore hockey parents will send their boys to specialized hockey schools to get more notice from college recruiters. Could that be an explanation? What would help is the MI school is identified by name. We could then google it and see if it has a web page. Most private schools do as having a web presence helps with their new-student recruiting efforts. And a web page will also tell us what the school’s mission is, i.e., hockey school vs. behavior correction emphasis.

QUICK! Call the Waaaahhhhmbulance…

ST. PAUL, Minn. — John McCain’s campaign on Wednesday angrily called for an end to questions about its review of Sarah Palin’s background, deriding a “faux media scandal designed to destroy the first female Republican nominee” for vice president.

“The McCain campaign will have no further comment about our long and thorough process,” Schmidt said, lashing out at “the old boys’ network” that he says runs media organizations… (HuffPo)

http://www.metimes.com/Opinion/2008/09/03/note_to_sarah_palin_governor_of_alaska_ee-rak_not_eye-raq/3661/

From the article:

“We highly recommend that any candidate running for the all-important office of the vice presidency of the United States has a minimum knowledge of foreign policy. We don’t expect the candidates to be a walking encyclopedia of world affairs, although being knowledgeable of world affairs certainly helps. It not only helps in making smart judgements when tackling difficult decisions in office, but it also helps voters to see that the candidate will be as comfortable with foreign policy as he or she is in the perils surrounding in commercial crab fishing in the waters of Alaska.

That knowledge includes being capable of properly pronouncing the name of a country your government currently occupies. It would be the least amount of respect one can show to the people of that country.”

* Liberal Democrats are going after her family only because she has no real weaknesses as a candidate.

Women are obviously just a vehicle for him – people to use to further his own political standings (Cindy Lou Who = $$$$ and Calamity Jane Palin = the self-proclaimed nutter zealots who are about as close to what the good Jesus taught as sewage is to cleanliness).

“. Is there a chance that Trig is Bristol’s baby and that she is not really pregnant?”

Look at the photos today where she’s greeting McCain, wearing a blouse tucked into a belted, pencil skirt:

A bit of tummy but not what I’d call a 5 month bump. However she’s busting out of her blouse. She looks more like 4 months post-partum than 5 months pregnant. The dress from 8/30 that caused all the comment is the new baby-doll Empire silhouette that makes anybody look pregnant.

I have seen a couple of pictures of Todd holding Trig. It’s true that he only does it in what looks like a staged photo op. It looks like either Bristol or Willow is in charge of the baby.

It’s a juicy gossip theory but time to let it go. I
personally doubt it’s true and people in Wasilla
that know Sarah Palin say it is in fact her baby- even
people who don’t like her and there are plenty of them.

How about everyone get focused on the arguments
that can be proven- her affiliation with the AIP, her
affiliation with Ted Stevens and his money people.
The fact that when she left her position as Mayor
of the whopping metropolis of Wasilla, AK they were,
for the first time ever in millions of dollars of debt.
Or that she has lied regarding her ‘Troppergate’ story.

These are the things that will in the end, actually have
an impact on the campaign and what gives us the
ammunition to use in fighting back the efforts to frame
her as some sort of Alaskan hero. Obama will
NOT TOUCH the baby stories so let’s use our efforts

The things that need to be discussed about Palin have been outlined above… to that I would add that he MinneaPolice are gassing protesters, performing illegal searches, and generally harassing peaceful protesters. To be fair, I think the Levi Johnston MySpace page was a hoax. You can see a capture of it in google cache.
http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:TqTea4LHDUYJ:profile.myspace.com/index.cfm%3Ffuseaction%3Duser.viewprofile%26friendid%3D410261272+wasilla+myspace&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=kr&client=firefox-a

The clues for me that it was setup were, it conveniently used the same widely available hockey shirt photo for the profile. There were too many Obama campaign posters (for a self described ‘redneck’) and listing Obama as his hero. But the clincher was the MySpace URL: entry was ‘http://www.myspace.com/levijohnsonpalin’ — misspelling ‘Johnston’ as ‘Johnson’ and tagging ‘Palin’ onto it? I don’t see any reason why the actual Mr. Johntson would have done that.

So, I think we need to drop the ‘I’m a redneck’ and ‘I don’t want kids’ accusations.

Children as such are off-limits, but their parents are not and especially not vice-president wannabe Sarah Palin. I have a feeling there is more to be uncovered about baby Trig that may reflect very poorly on Sarah Palin’s basic trustworthiness. She has previously been exposed as short of honest about multiple issues. Trustworthiness is an issue is very important to our country, especially in light of recent history, unless, of course, you are happy with a continuation of Cheney-style secret powermongering. A key difference is that, in Palin’s case, given her relative age, she would have a real shot to become president sooner or later, whether under her own steam or not. Of course, it matters who gets to be president.
There remain multiple, complex suspect features to this whole Trig episode (to cite a few, the apparently unknown and invisible pregnancy to near the end; the long, multileg flight back to Alaska and then Wasilla under circumstances of incipient labor; the curious photos apparently from the web page of a relation of Levi Johnston, now taken down; and, to sum up, just an overall weird vibe this family has been giving off, at in my eyes, in ways both large and small). Family peccadillos may be routine for ordinary people and not worthy or appropriate of public notice, but not when they may have a central relationship with discerning the candor of a candidate for almost the highest executive office in the country. What seem like intrusive questions about what are ordinarily private matters may be a critical tool for getting at the true nature of the candidate of qualitative value as great as inquiries concerning other matters. Of course, Sarah Palin is unqualifiedly a public figure now and not entitled to draw a veil down just because the questions about her conduct happen to involve family members. So don’t give me B.S. about how everyone should just butt-out; that is simply a tactic to stop the questioning and bury the truth. It would be unfortunate if the inquiry were to be stampeded by Republic media-manipulation, including the possible strawman of Bristol Palin’s more recent and, I must say, rather thinly disguised pregnancy.
So onward to the facts, people, and that includes especially Alaskans, who are now asked to shoulder a responsibility that I am sure was very unexpected, perhaps unwelcome, but critical to their country. Where is Trig’s birth certificate? Will the Governor not authorize unlimited release of certified copies of it by whoever handles vital statistics in Alaska, or are we to take it that she does not have that authority? Will she release her medical records? I mean, after all, why not? Won’t the doubters have egg on their collective faces if their suspicions proved unfounded?

3 09 2008
therealstory

I think Sarah Palin was trying to protect the kids in either scenario (ie trig is sarah’s or bristol is now pregnant) and now it is getting absurd.

Everywhere the Bristol or Levi are mentioned they say Bristol is 17 and Levi 18.

I think that Bristol is 16 or recently was 16 (certainly when she “conceived.”)

I think Levi is 19. That is what he puts on believe *his* myspace page

screenshot in case it disappears

actual link
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=113192646

and the 16 (minor) + 3 year age difference creates a BIG problem in the state of AK.

Bringing Levi Johnston to the convention is the only smart thing the McCain campaign has done since he chose Sarah Palin. The tabloids seem to love him.

Regarding the propriety of it, Levi is over 18, he can make his own decisions. And Bristol… well if she’s old enough to have sex and get married, she’s old enough to walk out on a stage for a few minutes.

This is really the best thing that has happened to either of them. Doomed to a blue-collar life in the boondocks, they now have the opportunity to make something of themselves thanks to this national exposure.

I’m getting a little weary of Babygate too, but then again I’ve been following this saga non-stop for the past five days. Eventually, the MSM will focus on Palin’s record and call her out on that. (Thanks, Plwalsh, for posting the NYT editorial. Props to the Gray Lady!) The news for the next few days will focus on Palin’s convention speech and the unbelievable decision to showcase Levi and Bristol. I read that the Republican speechwriters are going to steer Palin off talking about family stuff and onto policy issues. So that’s going to open the door for the MSM to actually question what she says about those topics. The MSM is already probing this stuff; they just need an excuse to print it.

By the way, did anybody notice that the National Enquirer is claiming that they tipped off Palin’s staff that they were going to run with the Bristol pregnancy story, and that Palin did a “pre-emptive strike” by announcing it first?

http://www.nationalenquirer.com/sarah_palin_at_war_with_her_daughter_over_pregnancy_wedding/celebrity/65370

That means Palin didn’t release the news to dispel the Babygate rumor; she did it because the world was going to find out anyway, so she wanted to get a swipe at the liberal blogs and smear the Obama campaign at the same time. Brilliant. I had wondered why she didn’t just release Trig’s birth certificate to dispel the rumor, since that would protect Bristol’s privacy and keep focus on herself. Ironically, the announcement has not silenced the rumor. If anything, people want more proof.

“ST. PAUL, Minn. — John McCain’s campaign on Wednesday angrily called for an end to questions about its review of Sarah Palin’s background, deriding a “faux media scandal designed to destroy the first female Republican nominee” for vice president.

It also suggested that Palin is a victim of gender bias in the media.”

Well someone needs to vet her since McCain didn’t.

On a different note, I’m curious if the locals who knew about Bristols pregnancy before it was announced also knew if the couple were planning to get married or was that something just cooked up once Mom decided being VP sounded like a good idea and having an unwed pregnant teen daughter just wouldn’t fly with the rightwing conservative base. I just think any marriage begun at that age for that reason has a lot of strikes working against it.

FACT: During her mayoral administration (of Wasilla) most of the actual work of running this small city was turned over to an administrator. She had been pushed to hire this administrator by party power-brokers after she had gotten herself into some trouble over precipitous firings which had given rise to a recall campaign.

Sarah campaigned in Wasilla as a “fiscal conservative”. During her 6 years as Mayor, she increased general government expenditures by over 33%. During those same 6 years the amount of taxes collected by the City increased by 38%. This was during a period of low inflation (1996-2002). She reduced progressive property taxes and increased a regressive sales tax which taxed even food. The tax cuts that she promoted benefited large corporate property owners more than they benefited residents.

She inherited a city with zero debt, but left it with indebtedness of over $22 million.

Here is how this will play out – Bristol, more than likely, is the mother of Trig. Palin, who hasn’t been entirely forthcoming, knows how the blogsphere can light up a rumor, even if it’s not based in truth.

Anyhow, she announced it – just to set everyone up. This time, Sarah’s going FTW. She will announce soon that Bristol had a miscarriage and demand the media leave her fam alone. What kind of louse would keep going after something like that? So, with no media looking into the miscarriage, and won’t pursue the Trig angle, end of story. Only one prob – where are the records?

She’s doing this in hopes folks will stop digging. However, if something in your house smells fishy, I’ll be damned if I don’t find out what is causing the odor.

I could see if the Palins or the GOP were really deserving of privacy – but after parading her fam out on stage, with her still hot daughter with her post-delivery baby fat, oh, it’s on. And then – to bring Hayseed into the mix? Get ‘er dun, huh? Classic.

RE the photo at the firefighter website, why does it say “revised 09/03/08” (TODAY!)? What did they update, the date that it was taken??? WHY are they revising a photo that has been up there for a while? What is the real date that it was taken — was it THREE DAYS before Trig’s birth (04/15/08) or back in 2007???

That fact that there is a COVERUP (website scrubbing) is PROOF that something is going on!!

All of you holier than thous can go somewhere else if you don’t like the Babygate discussion. Like it or not, that is what most people are wanting to discuss. Even the MSM has reportedly asked the McCain camp for a copy of Trig’s birth certificate!!

We need ALASKANS to come forward and tell the truth!! Were the rumors that SP was faking her pregnancy really rampant around the AK state legislature?

As for “Anne’s” letter to the editor, I have read it before — it is posted on another thread of this blog. She claims that there is nothing going on, that Trig is really SP’s baby. Not buying that, not buying that at all. The fact that she is lying about that calls “Anne’s” other statements into question as well. “Anne” could be some disinfo agent (they always include nuggets of truth in their BS). Or maybe she just doesn’t KNOW as much as she claims to know.

Finally, if you guys are referring to the black “blog” that is supposedly Levi’s that was a JOKE. It is not real. The original MySpace pages for Mercedes (Levi’s sister) ARE REAL, however. They were captured before they were placed on “private.”

Funny video of republicans Noonan and Murphy trashing Palin when they thought their mikes were off. Jon stewart and Stephen COlbert have some great video about the republican flip floppping. Six months ago they accused Hillary of being too sensitive about sexism, that she should be able to take it and now they’re crying that the media is being mean to Palin. They lambasted JOhn Edwards for continuing on his campaign when his wife had cancer…he would be distracted and he’s bad to leave his kids….but it’s great that Palin will leave her FIVE kids and pregnant daughter. There’s alot of footage about how important experience is and that Dem.Kane was mayor of only the 105th largest city but they backpeddle again about how great Palin is for being mayor of city of 7000.

Snooper,

This is an informal writing sphere…it’s not unusual to make errors in this arena. Ever use instant messenging? Same rule applies.

After Sarah Palin’s speech last night, I visited the comments on it on CNN.com. A woman there claimed that Track had been sent to school in Michigan to play hockey, but she said the school where he attended did not have a hockey team. She named the town/city, but I didn’t write it down or copy and save the post.

Is anyone familiar with this story?

A cat is a better mother than SP. btw has anyone looked at the timing of SP’s first child. I heard somewhere she eloped. Her anniversary is 8/30 and she mentions that her son had just turned 19 when giving her talk at the Wasilla Assemblies of God on June 8. Anybody know Track’s b’day? Hmm

Snooper…

Grammatially speaking… you shouldn’t use the word ‘so’ twice in the same sentence. Also, eliminate the first ‘and’ in the second sentence, and replace it with a comma after the word ‘books’. A comma after the word ‘spell’ is an arguable point, however.

My apologies to my brethren about feeding this troll. I could not resist.
