Where’s Sarah? The Return of a Classic.

wheres-sarah1

Back in 2006, the members of the Alaska State Legislature were doing their jobs in the place they were supposed to be doing their jobs, also known as the state capitol, Juneau. The governor, however, didn’t like Juneau much. She preferred to do her job from Wasilla and Anchorage, while collecting per diem payments and living in her own home. I know that the rest of the Legislature who live in the Anchorage area would probably love to do their jobs from home while collecting per diem payments. It’s hard to be away from your family for that long. Juneau can only be reached by plane. It can be difficult. But I’m guessing it would be frowned upon if they did it.

Double-standard aside, Sarah Palin was absent from her place of employment a lot. As a sign of protest, legislators from both sides of the aisle took to wearing a unique fashion accessory. They appeared at the Legislative session wearing buttons that said, “Where’s Sarah?” They realized that it was, in fact, impossible to be effective as a governor if you are not actually present.

This astute political observation couldn’t be more relevant today. Today, Sarah Palin is not in her office. She is not dealing with the affairs of state. She is not working on the gas pipeline, or the dropout rate, or trying to figure out why our gas prices are more expensive than anywhere else in the country. She’s not playing catch-up from all the work she missed while on the campaign trail, and she’s not trying to figure out what to do to keep Alaskans warm this winter. She’s not figuring out what to do about the budget which was finalized when oil was in the $60/barrel range, not the $45/barrel it is now.

So, where’s Sarah? She is on the stump for Georgia Senator Saxby Chambliss. She flew out to a private fundraiser last night, and is making four campaign stops in Georgia today. This travel comes on the heels of two months of campaigning out of state, and a recent trip to Florida for the Republican Governors’ conference. Yes, this is only two days (plus travel prep, speech prep, flying time, jet lag, etc.), but once again the Governor has missed the point. It’s what got her in the turkey video. She was unable to step outside the situation and ask herself, “How will this look to OTHERS?” How will it look that after months away trying to run the state from my Blackberry, and a return to a politically divided Alaska with lots of domestic problems that have been on the back burner, that I’m heading off to do more partisan political grandstanding for a controversial Republican candidate on the other side of the continent?” Because, if she had asked the question, the answer would have been, “Bad.”

I was glad to see the Democratic Party in Alaska stand up and say something today. This came from the Alaska Democratic Party:

Anchorage – While Gov. Sarah Palin is out of state again, this time in Georgia campaigning for incumbent Republican U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss on the eve of the runoff election, Alaska faces challenges including a lack of leadership from the Governor.

Palin will stump for Chambliss, the draft-evading incumbent Republican who waged a notoriously misleading campaign against a decorated war hero, at rallies Monday in Atlanta, Augusta, Savannah and Perry, Georgia. Palin has been back in Alaska at work for only a few days since running for vice president. “Alaskans need our Governor here earning her salary and working on key problems facing Alaska families,” said Alaska Democratic Party Chair Patti Higgins. Alaska is facing significant challenges, Higgins said, including:

  • Oil prices have dropped dramatically to about $45/bbl from the peak of $144/bbl in July, which threatens the state budget.

  • Alaskans are paying some of the highest prices for gas in the nation, averaging $2.87 per gallon, while the national average is $1.91.

  • The state’s oil production continues to decline, due to falling prices and mature fields.

  • The global credit crunch and falling natural gas prices threaten the Alaska gas line.

  • The State is failing to meet its constitutional obligation to take care of public education as shown by the high drop out rates and the low graduation rates.

  • Many Medicare patients cannot find doctors.

  • There is continued flight from rural villages.

  • Alaska faces the prospect of reduced federal dollars from Washington, D.C.

“Alaska’s challenges are significant, and there is much that needs to be done right now. Our Governor should remember that her primary job is to work on behalf of the citizens of Alaska, not engage in partisan politics in other states,” Higgins said.”Governing is more than creating photo ops. We’d like a commitment that the Governor is working, not just scheduling media appearances.”

Why the press conference? Is this one-day stump that egregious? Isn’t she going to be on the east coast anyway to join other governors as they meet with President Elect Obama on Tuesday? What’s the big deal? I’ll answer that question as my mother would. “Sarah, you’re really pushing it.” And she is. And each time she pushes, more and more Alaskans will push back, and her popularity will continue to slide, and she will continue to play “gotcha” with herself. In honor of the governor’s flight to Georgia, I have resurrected the “Where’s Sarah?” button. I have tried in vain to find an image of the original button, but have hopefully captured the spirit in this new incarnation of an old favorite. To get one, or several dozen, click HERE. You need to include the lack of leadership on the decline in the Permanent Fund;the managers are deer-in-the-headlights, and have done little to protect the principal- no direction from the Governor’s office (I guess this can’t be done by phone or her 1K a day aide).

Perhaps I’m-The-Campaigner could sell on eBay the rest of her RNC clothes to prop up the reduced value…just a suggestion.

I’m pretty sure that if our governor, here in Oregon, were to behave this way, Oregonians across the board would be up in arms. Go get ‘er, Alaskans! You deserve (and need) much better.

Where’s Sarah, indeed. If CA can recall Gray Davis, a Democrat, Alaska can do the same with Palin. She isn’t doing her job as governor, she’s ripping off the citizens with the PerDiemGate, there are so many other -gates and always MIA. AK, she needs to go, but don’t send her to the lower 48. Dump her as governor and keep her chained to Wasilla since they seem to like her so much. Find yourselves someone who can complete a sentence and do the job AK needs to be done.

Since she is going to Philly to meet with the other Govs and with PE Obama it on Tuesday that will mean flying back on Wed., so it will be Thursday at the earliest she will be in the office. After the holiday last week that means 10 days out of the office.

She is going to be really short of her time this month, might should look into docking her pay for time missed. I know when I worked I lost time after so many days off, I am sure most do too. It’s getting a little much with her missing so many days. Sure be interesting to see who is paying for her little jaunt to the lower 48 this time.

Ew.

I’m reminded of the Dick Cavat (sp?) clip where one guest uses the word “schmuck” and another (Jewish) guest starts, and says, “You can say that on TV? You can say ‘Mr. Happy’?”

I’ve always thought that Herself was just another Douglas MacArthur — wildly popular at the start, but given enough public exposure — not so much.

Sorry all of you in Alaska have to “endure” Sarah, but I think for the rest of us she is the “gift that keeps on giving”…I love how she keeps “over saturating” herself with this endless need to campaign (a.k.a narcissism).. Even my very Republican sister, who initially “loved her”, came to hate Sarah, the more she was out in public view….Let her keep it up and by 2010 she will not even be able to be re-elected as Governor, which will end her chances to run for president in 2012….

I would think that “pushing it” is putting it delicately, AKM. Several other descriptions come to mind” phoning (blackberrying) it in”, “blowing it off”, “not taking care of business”, etc.

If SWWNBN is unable or unwilling to do her job—that of being governor—then Alaskans need to replace her with a governor who is willing to help solve mounting problems as noted by the Alaska Democratic Party.

Day to day activities to benefit Alaskans may not happen each day, but essentially a three month absence causes the cumulative effect to avalanche.

New button idea 🙂 Sarah the Avalanche.

Moose pucky, I say. We obviously don’t need this particular governor…because she’s got little to offer. Not work on women’s rights. Not work on health care. Not practicing personal ethics. Not implementing reform in government. Not working toward a balanced budget. Just cronyism and partisanship and a turkey pardon.

Giblets is prattling on in Georgia today about how the country needs Saxby Chambliss to protect their second amendment rights. (Yawn…)

Caught a little of her speech at the first rally this morning (I watch so you don’t have to) and she is such a one trick pony. Essentially a variation of her general election stump speech – “progressing our country forward” and the usual blather. God it almost makes my ears bleed.

But I loved that she referred to him as Saxby. Not sure why but that really sounded silly. And a little informal. I doubt she could have picked him out of a line up before this morning. And truthfully, not sure she could find Georgia on a map.

A fear is that if he wins, and I think that is more likely than not, she’s gonna take a lot of credit for it. And probably be given some from her adoring fans. It’s clear that she will not go away – quietly, under pressure to stay home, of her own volition, under subpoena, to be home for Bristol’s baby, whatever.

Ok now, let’s see… she’s not in Alaska governing the state of which she is the executive, which means that she’s not doing her job as governor. She’s not at home being a hockey mom and making moose chili or tending to her pregnant teen daughter (whatever happened to Bristol? DID she give birth as advertised?) or to her special needs child or the one who was out of school for two months, which means that she’s not doing her job as a mother.

During the campaign, didn’t she sell herself to her adoring fans as a hard-working politician and a dedicated mother?

You would think that the RNC would send in the big guns to save the seat. But no, just SWWNBN. My guess is that they didn’t want to be affiliated with Chambliss, especially McCain. So, she’s just a sacrifice and she doesn’t even know it. The longer she’s out there, the worse 2012 will be for her and the better it will be for the other RNC survivors. For all the fun it is discussing Sarah – and it is fun-
(see UK lady’s ‘SPOT THE TURKEY COMPETITION’ quote in the other entry for today)

– Since her popularity in Alaska has fallen, I think, at least 30%, and probably is continuing downward as she turns her back on the States’s populace – when do the Alaskan Republican legislators, mayors etc. begin to worry that the Palin effect may hit them just like it did in the Presidential election – when do they begin to try to work around and or against her in order to save their own positions and their state party and maybe serve their state?

I am sure that all of the legislators are continuing to do what they can do, but the governor is a state’s decider guy, and in Alaska the decider is not deciding anything. It’s already been mentioned – that kind of neglect begins to add up.

The FEC, meanwhile, issued an opinion about what she needs to declare on federal forms. Alaska’s requirements apparently are more stringent but she apparently controls that department. Also.

Hahahahaha…..Palin is just good for so many laughs!! Can’t help myself.

Joking about Palin seems kind of cruel and cold-hearted until I remember images of her whipping up the frenzied mobs into a blood-haze of killing fever whilst wearing her bloody-red stilettos…..well, you get the point (or the points, if those stilettos are on your neck).

A real christian womanly role model…..loads of kids, red stilettos, unruly mobs, attempted unilateral derailment of this country’s struggle for ethnic equailty, and apparently no compunction in dabbling in the dark arts….. like Witch Doctors and exorcisms….yeppers, we may indeed be in “The End Times” if this gal makes it any further politically.

ALASKANS, our Executive Branch is MIA.!!!!

Write your legislator with words of encouragement. They are usually in a position of only hearing from constituents when they want something. Tell them they are doing a great job (they’ll eat it up), and that it will be up to them to show true leadership, as we no longer have an Executive Branch.

Hopefully, they will step up. They need some encouragement and the knowledge that they have support.

Those of you out of state, write them too. Let them know the WORLD is watching, and that you are not buying what SP is selling.

AKM, thanks, you have blogged what’s been on my mind all day: Sarah has taken a leave of absence from her job again, this time for a racist piece of sh*t, how can/does she get away with it? How can she be so above the law?

Some say she’s a puppet for the Repugs, positing that she’s in some way a victim. I disagree. She’s in it for all she can get, as a Republican politician and as Alaska’s governor. She is not a compassionate Christian, she’s a power hungry despot. She’s abused her political positions, lied, race-baited, charged women for rape kits, and costs Alaskan taxpayers and Republican party supporters far more than what she’s worth.

Alaskan politicians need to do their job NOW and take Sarah to task for a sizable number of “gates” clearly visible to the international public eye. They cannot wait until she falls under the wheels of the Repug bus, which is likely to happen sooner or later, because the Alaskan people can’t wait for their governor to do her job.

To quote the Rolling Stones, who’s driving their (Alaskan politicians) plane?

The good people of Alaska should feel nausea at the sight of their governor collecting a paycheck (and a per diem, as well?) while continuing her self-aggrandizement tour that has absolutely nothing in it for the people she purports to represent.

And that voice…Didn’t the voters of Alaska care about having to listen to that voice for 4 years?

This is from the Alaskan Dispatch; maybe they will help Alaskans demand accountability from your Governor-in-Name-Only:

Perhaps most interesting Monday was Alaska media’s new-found skepticism toward Palin. Alaska reporters largely gave Palin a pass during her first 18 months in office. After she joined John McCain on the presidential ticket, national media scoured her past and forced local reporters to reexamine how they’d been covering the governor.

One last thought….Every time I refresh the comments page, I see at the top, “Where’s Sarah? The Return of a Classic.” I realize the reference is to the button but the juxtaposition of “classic” and “Sarah” is mind-bending.

When I think of “classic”….I think of Pavarotti, Einstein, Plato, Jane Austen, Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, Stonehenge, ’57 Chevy, LL Bean boots, my Father’s workbench etc…

I definitely don’t think of the low-brow, low-class, newly minted Guv. of Alaska.

Sorry if I sound snobbish….I think the boots and my Dad’s workbench bring the snob level down a bit, eh?

Sorry, I spent my Christmas money on an Obama ornament, from the last post, so will not be getting or wearing a “Where’s It” button. I also must have be doing to much bookkeeping lately, but I got to wondering just how or who is paying for SP’s running around down in the lower 48, so i took a look at the AK Check book online. You have to read through a long, long list of vendors, but you can find some very interesting expense for the Gov’s office. I haven’t had time to come up with any complete totals, but the numbers for travel, printing, ad Radio and ADN sure caught my eye. Oh, and it must pay to be an AK Baptist, as they got $409,798.00 for Family Services from 7/1-10/31/08. If you are totally bored and want to follow the money in AK, just google AK checkbook online. It might give you some interesting questions to ask the Gov. or those who pay her bills.

Okay, this is going to be a long one, so brace yourself. Have sent off my weekly email asking our legislators to be accountable & grow a pair, I encourage all of you to make this a weekly to-do thing, cheaper than donating to her opponent in any future election! Let’s derail her here & now! Here’s my letter:

Dear Senator,

I am writing this email to encourage you to take action following the recommendations of the report compiled, at the request of yourselves, by Stephen Branchflower. I also request that you follow up on several much-needed actions in regard to the persons who flagrantly broke the law in the course of said report.

I am angered by the recent statement of Governor Palin’s spokesperson, Bill McAllister, who said that the only people interested in seeing these issues followed up are “ultra left wingers.” I must take issue with that, and further state that not only do I not have any idea who he is referring to by that phrase – it certainly could not be this particular Alaskan, but wholeheartedly repudiate the divisiveness and partisanship that the term implies. I am not, of course, surprised that he has imported the campaign trail hate-mongering of his boss to Alaska; that behavior was, and continues to be, a disgrace to Alaska and Alaskans, but is not the focus of this message to you.

I am a born & raised Alaskan who has spent the majority of her life in Alaska. Until this election, I have voted for the Republican presidential ticket since voting for George H.W. Bush, apart from voting George W. Bush in for a second term. My disgust with our governor far outweighed any that I may have, or formerly had, for John McCain, and was the reason that I changed my voter registration to Undeclared following her placement on the GOP presidential ticket. She does not represent my Republican values or beliefs, and certainly does not represent the best that the Republican Party has to offer in the way of politicians. Does that make me an “ultra left winger?” I rather think that that makes me a conservative voter that places ethical & prudent leadership before party line.

I was employed by the oil industry for ten years, and my husband remains employed by the oil industry. As such, I have had a front-row seat from which to view our governor’s ineptitude in managing our state’s symbiotic relationship with the oil industry. She has, since being placed in her appointed position at the AOGCC, been systematically undermining the State’s relationship with the oil producers. Do not imagine for a minute that there are not many other oil industry Republicans such as myself and my husband, moderate in our religious beliefs, that understand this and share our frustration and disgust. AIDEA is a farce, the TransCanada pipeline deal is a travesty that will bleed our state of hundreds of millions of dollars for naught, and the tax increases established to take advantage of the temporarily higher price per barrel leave the state incredibly vulnerable in the volatile energy market. It was less than ten years ago that the price of oil per barrel was at $10 and ARCO was “purchased” by BP – I know that many of you were legislators then and therefore should not have blindly followed her knee-jerk taxation policy. One of the “Big 3” oil companies in town is now force-ranking their employees, often a pre-cursor to layoffs, while our governor is on her Self Promotion Tour 2008 touting her success in, and knowledge of, the oil industry. Our state’s struggles with regard to the oil industry have only just begun.

There are many crises facing the state of Alaska right now, and you, as an elected official, are duty-bound to support Alaskans. First and foremost, in my mind, is your obligation to enforce the legal and ethical standards of our elected and appointed officials. If that is not done there can be no credibility within our government, and no assurance that any action taken is clearly in the best interests of Alaska or Alaskans. That being the case, I call upon you to do the following:

• Censure Governor Sarah Palin who, the Branchflower Report found to have “abused her power by violating Alaska Statute 39.52.110(a) of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act” which provides “The legislature reaffirms that each public officer holds office as a public trust, and any effort to benefit a personal or financial interest through official action is a violation of that trust.

• Seek contempt charges against the Governor’s husband, Todd Palin and the state officials who willingly ignored the Legislative Council’s subpoenas during the investigation.

• Hold hearings on whether Gov. Palin and her husband, Todd Palin, committed perjury in their sworn statements to Timothy Petumenos, in his function as independent counsel to the Alaska State Personnel Board.

• Call for an independent investigation to determine if Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg or others engaged in criminal witness tampering in advance of the Branchflower investigation.

Alaskans don’t like to be bothered by government, and Sarah is not bothering them with it. What’s the beef?

It will change only when “independent” Alaskans decide that freezing while their state’s economy dies and the educated population shrinks are not viable alternatives to competent, functional government. In the meantime, God help the rest of you.

GJ in ID said: “Oh, and it must pay to be an AK Baptist, as they got $409,798.00 for Family Services from 7/1-10/31/08.”

Now first, let me say that I have absolutely nothing against Baptists, or Catholics, Buddhists, Muslims or Atheists.

But I noticed that a few years back the State of Alaska got very friendly with faith-based initiatives. That’s fine, too – for the most part. Those folks usually are trustworthy and we hope they will do a good job with our state’s money (or money the state got from the feds).

I understand that this stemmed from a federal initiative, and the money flowed down to the states. OK, fine.

What bothers me is that a few years ago, I got the weekly email newsletter from the Lt. Gov. (can’t remember if it was Leman or Parnell) – mentioning the faith-based organizations that had received monies recently. One of the programs was something my non-profit organization might have taken advantage of, but we never heard boo about it.

So to me that said that non-profit organizations are lower on the pecking order.

Anyone want to talk about separation of church and state?

I was struck by a comment you made about SP – that she can’t see how things look to others. It hadn’t occurred to me until you said it, and then it hit a chord. But I wasn’t sure why the first time, except that it made so much sense. This time it hit me. I’ve seen it before.
I want to start by saying that I think there are many fine people who are religious, including Christians. And there are others for whom religion supports their weaknesses/pathology. For some people, when they believe that God is in control, and everything they get is a blessing, or lesson, from God, they start seeing people as tools instead of people. They quit worrying about learning about the human situation, because they are focused on God’s message for THEM. It can be very egocentric. I remember giving a very appropriate and thoughtful gift to a friend going through a tough time. Her response was that she felt cared for – by God! He brought her what she needed when she needed it. He gave her a virtual hug. It totally negated the thoughtful thing I did.
I know this isn’t all Christian/religious people. I know they too are on a journey and will learn and grow and change. I also don’t regret giving my friend the gift. She may not have seen the situation the same as me, but she is also very kind and thoughtful towards me. However, I don’t think I want someone with that attitude in the White HOuse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We’ve had other Christians in the White House, who took personal responsibility – and I’m not thinking of W.
You’re right. SP is too egocentric to be able to do the dutires of the White House – can you imagine her as a diplomat (and most VPs & Preses have diplomatic duties) – and interpreting everything as God’s blessing or lesson?
Perhaps I am being too harsh on her. I welcome comments, particularly from those with a deep faith, to show me the errors in my thinking.
