Interesting Rumors from a Reliable Source…

22 11 2008

It’s a relatively quiet day on the Mudflats. That always makes me nervous. It usually means that shortly there are going to be so many things hitting the fan, I won’t even have time to cover them all. That’s been the pattern, anyway.

There’s a little fallout from Turkey Gate. New news is promised on Monday regarding the crazy Stevens trial revelations which one reader brilliantly described as “Dynasty meets Northern Exposure meets The Sopranos.” But other than that, not much news. This gave lots of time today for speculation about things here in Alaska. Will the Governor be running for Lisa Murkowski’s senate seat in 2010, or will she try for another term as governor? And WHO will rise up and run against her? Will Ted Stevens win his appeal? Will I actually be able to consume turkey this Thanksgiving after witnessing Joe the executioner and his cone of death?

But a couple hours ago, I heard a little sound…..a sound you can only hear when it’s quiet. Like a paper envelope being slid under a door. (OK, this happened via email, but it doesn’t make as good a story) Minding my own business, sitting at my rolltop desk, watching the snow fall, the sound made me look up. I turned around, and sure enough I spotted it – an envelope, face down on the wide plank entryway floor. I stood and hurried over to the door, flung it open, and looked right….nothing. Looked left….and I just about made out a glimpse of a black cape as it whisked around the corner and out of sight. Hmmmm. I thought about pursuing the caped stranger, but as I had just been blogging, and following the proper dress code rules, I was in my pajamas and didn’t feel like racing out in the cold.

“Mudflats”. Yes, it was addressed to me. I slit open the envelope, intrigued. No return address, and the letter was signed “A Reputable Source.” (That means I know who it is, but I can’t tell you).

And the contents of the mystery note? A clue. A clue, which addressed one of the very questions I had just been pondering, and it wasn’t the one about the turkey, which won’t be answered until Thanksgiving Day.

The question? Who will step up to be the dragon slayer in 2010? Who has the smarts, the experience, the integrity, and the chutzpah to go toe-to-toe with Sarah Palin, whether she runs for governor, or senator. And there was the answer, scrawled in unfamiliar penmanship – Democratic State Senator Hollis French.

Ahhh. This is good. He is very qualified, has an impressive resume, and is one of the White Knights of the Legislature. Before he gets the official Mudflats endorsement, however (not that this endorsement is particularly coveted), I’m going to wait and watch and see what happens when the Legislature meets again. They have much on their plates, and they need to know they are supported, but they have some tough decisions ahead and people will be watching.

I saw Hollis French on Thursday. He was on line at Costco. That’s why I love this state. Our representatives aren’t somewhere distant, holed up in a marble tower. They don’t seem alien and unapproachable. They are on line at Costco, buying fruit. LOTS of fruit. The man really loves fruit. So, when it becomes appropriate to send something to Hollis French when he becomes our next Governor, or Senator, I’ll make it a fruit basket, and make it under $250.

Okay, first, the “first” thing is stupid. Get a life.

Second, the Anchorage Daily News is spanking Sarah Palin for self-promotion and self-adoration rather than governing the state of Alaska.

Do you think Alaskans are better off with her running her mouth all over the country or should be doing her job?

You are a great writer, AKM! Thanks. The snow falling today is peaceful and refreshing after that turkey episode. Wonder what all the fruit was for? At this point fruit salad sounds more appetizing than turkey. Thanks for keeping us informed. This isn’t over yet, in my book, either. I want to see Barbie held accountable!

He’ll have to get past his own qualifications experience and integrity thing and operate on a whole other level…

Maybe someone has to be gentlemanly and call her ridiculous in a calm polite way… (Would that work?)

I just saw an ad thanking Sarah Palin for being … well gosh darn it – Sarah Palin.
I have no doubt she will crank up the audacity dial past 10, and plow through her next challenge.

I hope she continues until the very end, dragging down her base, her ideology and and her party.

So what exactly were they doing to those turkeys in the cones, and why was Palin so comfortable with it?
and why do I have these images of her legs sticking out of a cone?

Hollis would be a respectable candidate for Guv. But Doogan would really be fun for Senator. Especially if Franken is in the Senate. They could do some entertaining duo commentary.

I saw a poll today. (yes, I still look at polls) The poll said the Reps were fairly evenly split between Romney and Palin with Huckabee bringing up the rear for the 2012 run.

I’m a pretty good judge of people and much like the American public, Sarah just doesn’t meet the requirements for a major national office. I suggest Alaskans seed if they can get Bruce the Moose registered and run him in 2012. Now, I’d back that.

As one of the first 10000 on MoveOn.org, I can attest to the power of the internet. I signed on simply as an anti-war supporter, and whew! Amazing what that group has accomplished. Have to be selective where my meager disposable income goes, so have not been directly involved with them for a few years.

Anyway, thanks to the interest of Muddies and especially to AKM, there is the awesome power of like-minded folks helping out when the need arises here in Alaska. Of course, this could also backfire. Alaskans are uncomfortable with “outside agitators”, as even SP’s supporters chaffed at the McCain campaign’s meddling.

But meanwhile, it’s is fun to speculate, and educate, and commiserate with like minded folks from around the world. And we ARE the underdogs in this fair state.

Ren: I saw those ads from the link you posted and my mind went agoggled and out of sync. Who are these people who say in the ad: ” Show your support for Gov. Sarah Palin and make donations for Palin being articulate, {Im getting off up off the floor) straight forward, and uplifting champion of commonsense”(this time I fell on something softer, my bed in disbelief). This has got to be a joke. Sarah Palin articulate??????? OK I get it, these supporters of hers speak Palinese so they think she is articulate. They say she is straightforward, after all the lies and fabrications she spewed during the election. And they claim that she is the champion of commonsense (jaw dropped) when she has made the most inane decisions in the last few months that have proven her to be an idiot of the worst order. I cannot believe that they can collectively fit their mouths to say these things. My only explanation is that these people must be low information, micro micro mental midgets to believe this crap. Sheesh!!!

22 11 2008

Palin has made it pretty clear that she has a ‘higher calling’-she wants out of Alaska. What ever office she runs for in 010, is going to be a spring board for the presidential primaries, which will follow almost immediately.
So it wont be credible for Palin to try to oust Murkowski, if it’s obvious that she will then spend the next two years, “outside”, on the campaign trail.

Her best bet will be to seek re-election normally, as Governor, and then be swept up, involuntarily, by an overwhelming tsunami of acclaim and affection by her fellow citizens, calling feverishly upon her to serve our great nation.

No?

If Hollis French wants to run against Palin for any position, OR to run for Gov in 2010 then he has some work to do.

It is well-known that he was one of the legislators in favor of the “witch hunt” (term used by her supporters, of which I am NOT one) now known as Troopergate. That being the case, and considering the competing reports out there, he will have to further justify his participation. To those of us who support the pursuit of truth known as Troopergate, that means continuing to seek out the truth, seeking further enlightenment, i.e. who lied? Palin or Monegan? For the Palin supporters he will have to drop it and “move on.” Mind you, if he supports dropping it and moves on he loses all credibility with us truth seekers (who have not been appeased!). Further, to ensure that she is not in the running for re-election he has to ensure that HER credibility is shot. Per diem gate, house gate, tax gate, troopergate, etc…

Lots of work to be done before he can be taken seriously. We liberals/progressives are horribly outnumbered here in Alaska, so he has to be able to bring some middle of the roaders and conservatives over. How could he do that?

She has to be exposed as a liar & fraud — the means are out there, who’s going to take on the challenge?

Sarah’s Future:

Last night on the night thread Sarenofitan told us of a feud going on between Nate Silver, 538, and John Ziegler. He posted a couple of links and the second one quotes David Foster Wallace of The Atlantic. Wallace comments on the attributes of a good radio talk show host. This could pertain to TV also, you betcha. After reading this, I have decided Sarah will not be up to the job.
That job – gone!

Now for her book deal. Obamanus has started a book. You can find it under Sarah Palin. It is Sarah Palin Biography. The idea is to write a chapter on the various happenings of the campaign in Palinese. I figure if we get ours edited and printed and launch it a couple of months before hers goes out, we’ll clean up. With the economy the way it is, most people won’t be able to purchase a lot of books. When you’ve already bought our best seller, why buy another? Lots of titles flying around. “Deuce” ]]]

Forgive me, Deuce, if I play “The Professor of the Bleeding Obvious,” but if we thought it sounded fun, we’d already be over there.

Seriously, for some of us this is a warmer and a more enjoyable environment for posting. It’s very simple. You read the blog entry and then respond. Everybody (mostly) responds to the current blog entry, so all the discussion from all the peeps is in one place.

I think board management will have to turn off the “reply” feature to AKM’s blog entries, and force blog repliers over there. It would help if there was a link at the bottom of each of AKM’s blog entries to the appropriate folder where the discussion will be carried on.

Many of us are simple folk and the simpler you make it, the more likely we will do it. Not giving us options helps, too.

So, if it really is a big deal for so much discussion to go on in the blog-response zone, I bet if you turned off the “reply” feature and put up a link to a folder where it is being discussed, most of us would read the entry, click on the link, and join the conversation there. And we would all be, automatically, posting in the same folder, just like we are here.

The message board forum does have some good stuff and interesting folders, and on days when I have time to wander around and try to find good conversation I have posted there.

But there aren’t too many days like that for me.

it’s not just up to Hollis French to investigate Palin – it’s a task for the January Legislature to tackle since they will be in full session.

Les Gara, Les Gara, Les Gara. Just throwing in my two cents.

By the way, NEW POST!

Califpat:

I think CNN or Fox (don’t quote me) had one of the 3 ads that are going to appear—one with a cooked turkey on the table amongst other Thanksgiving goodies. I wondered for a moment, “is this one or which one of the ole’ poor Tom’s that didn’t make it???” Okay that is horrible. Never the less, I wish they would have put out an ad thanking our troops. I think that the added attention has actually hurt the Gov. more. I would chill for awhile (literally and figuratively).

Whether it’s French, Doogan (my favorite), Gara or whoever – somebody has to start now. Governor or Senator. Alaska is ripe for a change. The crazy bible thumpers ARE a minority. We just didn’t know – now we do. I have faith. If you haven’t read it, check out Shannyn Moore’s blog. Alaska will go back to it’s blue roots – it may take time but it can be done. I have faith!

@ Cynthia, TX (20:16:19) :
I propose a monthly fee of $20 a month for 8 years for anyone who voted for GEORGE W BUSH! And that would solve our debt issue for the nation for a bit. Who is in with me?

@Martha Unalaska —

I do understand that Hollis isn’t solely responsible for resolving this troopergate stuff, however, I do believe that he has a heavier burden to bear for the reasons that I stated above. Les Gara carries the same sort of weight, as he also spoke out quite often about the issue. Bottom line: are you part of the problem or the solution &/or are you gonna walk the talk?

I know that they can’t carry it off on their own, one hopes that they will have the support of other dems and majority of repubs, we progressive/liberal types can only hope, as it is in their hands now.

I can tell you one thing for certain, if Les & Hollis go quietly into the dark night over this troopergate thing my opinion of them will change, and not for the better. If they don’t they assume some risk in appearing as grandstanders/witch hunters/media panderers by virtue of having spoken out so publicly while the media was in AK in full force, but not backing that up with action after in the aftermath of the storm. Are they going to be our very own FEMA for our Alaskan Hurricane Sarah? All talk & no action? In January they need to do some shouting & carrying on so that I know that they are still fighting the good fight.

By the way, agree with you about Fran, but she’s been flying a little too far under the radar to suddenly appear as a legit candidate. She’s got to have some recent political successes to carry a campaign for Gov…

Yes! Bring Fran back! I think she has made another life for herself now though. Why would she want to get back into the dirt of politics? I’m sure she is living happily ever after. Maybe if Knowles goes to Interior though, she could have a place with him.

Hmmm. I wonder if Sarah Palin and Hawaii gov Linda Lingle (bff!) will try to swap governorships. Sarah off to the 50th State and LInda off to Alaska! Or more nauseating a thought, they’ll be roomies on the campaign trail for their state’s Senate races…

@SMR (21:19:32) :

Fran Ulmer is the new Chancellor of UAA, so I’m not sure she’d want to leave that to run for anything again.

Like many of us in the lower 48, I have found a friend in you, in the sense I delight to take my cup of coffee in the morning and sit down “with you”, listen to your truly scathing, witty, insightful observations, letting your descriptive passages just set the tone for my day…I too will see with clear eyes, speak the truth, and find the funny where it’s to be found.

I wondered if when the election was over my media obsession would peter out, and it has, at least it’s become simply keeping informed…except for Mudflats, which is keeping informed of Alaska doings, but also being entertained, feeling friendly, and laughing out loud with someone I respect and like a lot. So thanks!

You also are keeping us all informed and shining a keen light on Palin antics, the death knell to her ambitions (except in the entertainment world). Her complete lack of understanding about anything, and certainly about what’s ethical and what’s appropriate, kept in the spotlight is your contribution to the entire U.S. A public servant you are, doing public service, nobly. In your pajamas.

Well said PA – I’m not interested in trolling through forum topics either however I find it amusing people keep trying to steer us in that direction. You’re right – if we wanted to be over there we would be already, and if the blogger wants to end comments here then just turn the comments off:)

I would think the AKM endorsement would be highly coveted – given your following of committed Dems all over the country – who really would like to see the “gift that keeps on giving” fall to the fruit guy!

For the Republicans to win in 2010 and 2012, I think they really need to ditch ALL of the present contenders, Palin being one of them. They can’t really believe that she is good for them. Otherwise they are crazier than I thought they were. Anywho, the next election involving Paling will certainly be interesting. Hollis French sounds like a good candidate who can bring some sense and credibility to the office of the governor. Let’s hope.

Who knew that Tim Petumenos represents Joe Boehm in his civil affairs ?

This letter requesting leniency, from Anchorage Assemblyman Dan Coffey to Boehm’s judge is interesting.

The judge was John Sedwick.

What a small world.
