My State is 1/3 Blue for the First Time in Three Decades!

18 11 2008

tedmark7

Well, the final tally today had Mark Begich leading convicTed Stevens by 3724 votes.  It’s a happy happy day on the Mudflats!

Mark Begich has officially won the Senate seat.  Alaskans have done something right.

That means that my red red state isn’t so red anymore.  We have just elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate for the first time in 30 years! OK, I know….it took running against a seven time convicted felon to do it, and it was still really really close… but nobody better snow on my parade!

I’m having a small-scale flashback to election night, when I felt, for the first time in a long time that there was someone out there who was representing me who was actually representing me!  I feel suddenly relevant…light in my heart…with something that feels like a golf ball lodged in my throat.

I truly never thought I’d see this day.  When I first moved to Alaska, almost 2 decades ago, I was told by my future spouse that the only thing that would get Stevens and Young out of office was the grim reaper.  Who could have known about those undeclared home renovations?

I pause for a moment to salute the very excellent House candidate, Ethan Berkowitz who was unable to unseat Don Young.  He came closer than anyone ever has, and deserves our gratitude.  Who knows…when Don Young gets convicted, maybe Ethan will give it another shot.

Begich issued a statement shortly before 5 p.m. claiming victory.

“I am humbled and honored to serve Alaska in the United States Senate,” Begich said. “It’s been an incredible journey getting to this point, and I appreciate the support and commitment of the thousands of Alaskans who have brought us to this day. I can’t wait to get to work fighting for Alaskan families.”

The Stevens campaign has made no comment.

Begich more than tripled his lead today after the state counted about 23,000 absentee and questioned ballots from Anchorage, Southeast Alaska, the Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak. The state finished counting from other parts of the Alaska last week.

I take this opportunity to congratulate Senator Mark Begich!  I am proud to have him representing me in the U.S. Senate.  And I offer these humble words of advice, Senator, now that you have done the impossible, slain the political lion, and defeated the Republican Goliath.

Don’t.  Screw.  Up.

(Now, pass the cake!)

To celebrate this amazing event, I have turned all the commenters into joyous little critters!  Change is in the air!

I’m sure God is wondering just what he has to do to get through to Sarah. First, he slams the Vice Presidential door in her face. Next, he has the RNC send out a team of lawyers and accountants to retrieve the stolen underwear her family is hiding. Now he slams the door to the Senate shut. Can Sarah take a hint?

Are you disappointed their will be no recount? I would assume if a large discrepancy were to emerge between the machine count and the hand count, all races would be subject to a recount including the Young-Berkowitz race. Maybe Young did not really win after all…..

So, the Alex Forrest of the GOP will now have to plot her takeover of the Presidency from outside the perch of a Senate seat.

However, I have this bitchy little itch to scratch.

Sarah and ilk. Eat cake, we will “let you”. And get right on that Dr. Pepper.
At this point in time, perhaps you don’t need it for your pooper…… by the way, have you ever read that Dr. Pepper is made from prune juice? Big stretch, I know. To read a label..

I am going back to doing my research on F. Bacon as Wm. Shakespeares’s ghost writer. Somehow that has me sidetracked from listening to Sarah’s mooseburger compatriot, Sandra Lee from the Food Network. Let’s use neon cheese in those dawgs. Geesh. Were they cloned?

Wonderful thing to look forward to (to hope for) in the future:

Sarah runs for 2nd term as governor of AK, and loses.
Upshot: Sarah doesn’t have to go the effort of submitting per diem expense to stay at home in longer. She can just be there all the time, at N/C to the AK taxpayers.

I can’t think of a time when I’ve been this happy for a political outcome…well, Nov 4 was a pretty fine day, too. As far as a senate race goes, the de-election of misogynist Rick Santorum was a pretty fine day, too.

Maybe Begich can get Harry Reid to reconsider the retention of that incompetent Homeland Security committee chair, aka Joe Lieberman. The time has come for Joe da unplumber and Joe the insecurity chair to go!

Mark Begich is DA MAN!!!!

Soooo… what’s next for Teddy?

Will he concede and fade into the sunset?

Or will he fight the election results in a gross act of poor judgment and/or arrogance?

Will he continue to deny that he’s now a convicted felon not worthy of Alaskan spit? Or will he submit himself into the hands of the judiciary for the proper judgment?

If Teddy is ever sentenced, will the Court pity him and leave him go under house arrest? I mean… will the Court look at his age and pity him to the point of not sending him to jail? Any jail sentence at this point – he’s 85 – will be spun as a life sentence because he could drop dead at just about any point and jail life certainly will cause so much stress in him that his ticker might give out. What will the Court do?

Congratulations to AKM and Alaska voters and Mark! You get a rousing chorus of “Go Blue,” from this Michigan Wolverine.

Now, will you please write your senators to get them to approve the bridge loan to the three American automakers, since they can’t get money from a bank these days? I know they’ve made mistakes, but we cannot afford to trash the auto industry, the bulwark of what’s left of manufacturing in the US. The Repugs just want to kill the unions: if they force the American 3 into bankrupty, the courts will allow them to break existing contracts, throw out the unions and take away health care and pensions from retirees. How do I know this? Look at the airline industry. The government pension replacement plan doesn’t come anywhere close to matching what current pensioniers get. I have a lot of friends and relatives who have retired from the car companies and they are shaking in their boots, not to mention the active worker who will lose their jobs, and the parts suppliers who will close, and the local bars and barbershops and restaurants, etc. etc. Please help us, okay?

I actually think that the red-wretched-right wingers are blinded by hypocrisy…as in the “hypocrite in lipstick!” Surely they cannot see the errors of their way…such as praying for rain during the DNC convention, Ha! (And I could not help but notice the irony of Hurricane Gustav…)

But this one thing I’m sure of ~ that we reap what we sow, be that good or bad…and Sistah Sayrah might want to pray for crop failure for the 9 1/2 weeks she spreaded seeds of malice. I am reminded of the interview where SP said that she believed God’s will would be done on Nov. 4th. To that I say, Hallelujah again! Now, I wonder if she too has ALSO “thanked God” yet…. :-]

Looking at the success the good guys have enjoyed in this electoral season, it’s amazing to note all the stuff that had to fall into place for things to turn out right. Eight years of a corrupt and incompetent administration in Washington, a massive financial meltdown, the threat of global warming, Ted Stevens getting convicted just days before Nov. 4th, the Republicans nominating a nitwit for Vice-President, and so forth…. I’m happy, but wouldn’t it be nice if America wised up and voted the right way before we experienced so much misery?

WELL DONE, ALASKA! Congratulations from the Pine Barrens (NJ) to you and your new, Blue U. S. Senator Mark Begich. In this “Alaskan landslide” election, Begich has accomplished the unheard of political feat of this generation…defeating the 30-year incumbent, Ted Stevens. Hats off to you (and tossed into the cold night air)! (I won’t mention that he’s a convicted felon.) Unfortunately, now you’ll have to figure out what to do with Uncle Ted.

And, AKM, I so agree with your message to Mark…Don’t Screw Up. This is the same message a lot of us have for our own elected officials. And in Begich’s case I, for one, will be watching and wishing you all the best.

CO Almost Native – The way I understand it, yes there are 2500 absentee votes left to count – but Begich is up by some 3700 – so even if Stevens wins all 2500 absentee votes, he loses. And I think the December official declaration is a formality. Of course Stevens could ask for a recount (please no!) but even if there were some mistakes, it wouldn’t be enough for him to win. Thank goodness it’s not like Georgia and doesn’t have to be a runoff election.

It is great to see the changes in Alaska. Congrats to Begich. And I think that you were very instrumental AKM with your little blog. Democrats also did well in Washington State. Our governor was re-elected. Now we need to get the senate to vote for the auto workers. Going under will hurt too many people. Don’t allow the republicans to break the unions or we will have even less protections. First a congratulations to Senator-elect Mark Begich!!!!!!!!!!!

Update on Worst Case / Best Case Scenarios

Worst Case

Ted wins re-election. (oops, Happy Birthday UnkaTed –NOT!)

The worst case crashed out on the first item! All other items go POOF!!!!

Best Case — well on our way there!

Begich wins the current election and de-thrones Ted. (Done!)

Before re-counts are over, the Rpugs fail to vote Ted out of the party amid much loud debate that exposes those who support him.

(Almost on the button!)

With an especially poignant appeal on his behalf by Hair’em Scara that she cannot possibly back away from later.

(Sarah, you pulled Ted out from under the bus with some encouragement recently, now I am waiting for you to open your big mouth to try again!)

The Senate does not wait a moment and throws him out with a near-unanimous vote where his staunchest supporters fight on publicly to the bitter end – and we know their pork-barrel-loving names.

(come on Senators, throw the bum out!)

His appeals are either denied, or even better, he spends a lot of his own money getting his appeals heard by the Supreme Court who summarily uphold his convictions.

(well, it’s on his dime for sure now!)

He lives to be 105 and dies – during a visit to Ben in prison.

(Ben, the two of us need look no more, We both found what we were looking for…)

So far the Best Case is playing out like a script…… the rest may very well happen!

Now that Sarah’s erasing the penciled-in senate race, I wonder if she’ll lend a hand with her buddy, Linda Lingle, governor of Hawaii. A relationship to watch in the next two years. Lingle is a lame duck and will be setting her own political course in the next year, and is surely eyeing a run for Daniel Inouye’s seat, one of Ted Stevens last friends. Remember, Linda spoke fondly of her being with Sarah “when her water broke” as they attended meetings together in Texas, before she flew home to give birth to Trig. They’re an odd pair. One Maui writer, a frequent critic, calls our governor “Cunning Lingle.”

Congratulations Alaska and congratulations AKM! You should all be very proud for turning Alaska 1/3 blue. What an accomplishment! I’m so happy that Mayor Begich will be your new Senator!

Thank-you AKM for doing so much during this election season. Your blog helped me bear through those stressful days when I thought that Sara Palin would be our next VP. I was ready to leave the country! Maybe you should run for the next open Representative seat and kick another Republican out of his/her seat! You’d make a great one!

Keep up the good work and again, thank-you so very much for keeping us all informed about what’s going on up there in Alaska!!!

I still remember when Nixon signed the TAPS bill (which Mike Gravel had worked so hard for) and when he (trickie dickie) went to hand the pen to Senator Gravel, ole Uncle Ted stepped forward, grabbed the historic pen and said, “I’m the Senator from Alaska.”

Bastard…

And then when cowpie led the charge to get Ernest Gruening’s grandson to unseat Gravel in the primary –with a MASSIVE repub primary crossover– so that Frank The Bank would have a cakewalk over little boy Gruening.

No, I’ve never forgiven cowpie for that…

Congratulations AKM and Alaska!

I went to bed thinking this thing could drag out much longer with a possible recount. I wake up, go to the internet and find the news mentioned on a Russian news site–they are keeping an eye on you! So I had to come directly here to celebrate with you all. I have been lurking here obsessively for hours everyday during the last few months.

AKM you played a direct role in this victory and you must feel a huge sense of accomplishment. There is still work to be done–those last possible doors have to be closed, locked and bolted. I have absolute faith that you will keep us informed, aware and engaged–even those of us who are on the other side of the world.

Your essays are amazing. I take such pleasure in your talents as a writer: logic balanced with a sense of humor, perspicacious insights presented with pithy evidence, and an intuitive feeling for style and grammar. You have provided the perfect antidote to the mind-numbing, dubious and seemingly omnipresent nonsense of SP.

Mudflats will remain on my bookmarks bar for a long time to come.

Stevens was convicted in the federal system where little of this first-time-no-sentence bs goes on. Federal sentencing guidelines will need to be considered. If he gets probation, it will be almost totally based on his age and status as a long-time US Senator.

There have been many first-time convicts who received at least 18 months in the federal pen for single convictions. Stevens has 7 felony convictions. At the very least, he should get house arrest until he drops.

I love my critter!

Someone above mentioned that Ted was initially appointed to the U.S. Senate so I looked up his predecessor on wikipedia – how interesting that Senator Bob Bartlett was a Democrat yet the Governor of AK (Hickel) replaced him w/ republican Ted . . .

Edward Lewis “Bob” Bartlett (April 20, 1904 – December 11, 1968) was an American politician, and was a member of the Democratic Party.

Bartlett was born in Seattle, Washington. After graduating from the University of Alaska in 1925, Bartlett began his career in politics. A reporter for the Fairbanks Daily News until 1933, he accepted the position of secretary to Delegate Anthony Dimond of Alaska. Three years later he became the chairman of the Unemployment Compensation Commission of Alaska.

On January 30, 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt appointed him secretary of the Alaska Territory. Beginning in 1945, Bartlett served as the delegate from Alaska to the 79th and the six succeeding Congresses. Continuing his civic service, he was president of the Alaska Tuberculosis Association and served as a member of the Alaska War Council. He labored constantly for statehood; upon Alaska’s admission to the Union in 1959 he became the first senator from Alaska and served until 1968.

Bartlett possessed the reputation of a quiet man of achievement. The Library of Congress estimates that he had more bills passed into law than any other member in congressional history. Even before statehood he was writing legislation (sponsored by other Congressional Representatives), such as the Alaska Mental Health Enabling Act of 1956. Some of his bills included the Radiation Safety Bill and the Bartlett Act, requiring all federally funded buildings to be accessible to the handicapped.

Bartlett died following heart surgery on December 11, 1968 at Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Ted Stevens was appointed to replace him on December 24, 1968.

In 1971, the state of Alaska donated a bronze statue of Bartlett to the U.S. Capitol’s National Statuary Hall Collection.
