Sarah Palin has a Press Conference?!?

14 11 2008

That whooshing sound you are about to hear is Sarah Palin sucking all the air out of the room at the Republican Governors Conference. I don’t know what happened. Maybe somebody slipped an Ambien in her morning coffee. But the perky, feisty, ‘pallin’ around with terrorists’ ‘you betcha’ Palin looks completely deflated and totally out of her element.

But, part of the Sarah Palin we have come to know is still in there, clad in black shiny clothing that wasn’t hers before August 29th.

I’m hoping that the one thing that will come from the fact that Sarah Palin is inexplicably still in the national spotlight, is that people will realize after a while, that there is no there there. When allowed to speak at will, she regurgitates the same handful of talking points, the same double helpings of word salad, and the same endless High School filler words to inhabit all the space that should be filled with actual thoughts. Scratch the surface, and you’ll find more….surface.

Here’s part of her intro:

I am very proud to be here with this group of Republican governors. There’s something different about this group where we…uh…as a whole what we do in our states is govern with strong executive experiences that are put to good use. We don’t let obsessive extreme partisanship get in the way of just doin’ what’s right for the people who have hired us…our constituents in our states and you know…um…we have to balance our budgets. It doesn’t matter who controls our legislatures, we balance our budgets. We’re in charge of tens of billions of dollars in our states and tens of thousands of public employees all providing services and projects and implementing policies that are best for our states, and again not allowing obsessive partisanship to get in the way. I think this group is going to be looked to and looked at for leadership that had perhaps been lacking in congress and uh…in Washington D.C. This group’s going to be uniquely qualified to provide leadership in this nation.

Now all those governors understand what it is exactly that a governor does every day. At least we are led to believe that she was addressing governors…it might have been middle school students…can’t tell the difference.

And after the intro, we were treated to a very short press conference!

Q. What are the chief issues on which you would like to turn your political celebrity into a new political credibility for your party and yourself?

Palin: I don’t know if it’s political celebrity but I want to put to good use my experience that I have as uh..the governor of an energy producing state to help our nation become energy independent and…and, you know, we’re going to focus here on what we can do as a team of Republican governors together because again, what we do in our states is balance budgets despite who controls our legislature. We don’t let obsessive partisanship get in the way of doin’ what’s right. We’re all about healthcare reform and doing those things in our own states to allow competition accessibility, affordability for healthcare for more of the residents in our own states. Our border states, of course, being very concerned and committed to uh, immigration reform. Those issues that we work on every day. We as a team I believe are going to be looked to and we offer up the solutions that on a national level our elected officials are going to need.

Q. You have lost the vote of women and Hispanics. What can you do to recover? (ouch)

Palin: Well, ya know, I treat everybody equally – women, Hispanics, I..I..am going to…uh…work with this group of governors to serve, um, all Americans and individually in all of our states our residents..um..we’re going to work extremely hard but treating everybody equally and not allowing gender, race, uh, background, demographic representive, we’re not going to let that get in the way of doing what’s right for our country as a whole.

As you’ll notice, she keeps backing away from the podium, wanting to end this, and who knows why, but Texas Governor Rick Perry says Palin will take one more question and actually grabs her by the arm and steers her back to the microphone like she was a child…or a prop. The whole thing is just painful.

It’s nothing wrapped in nothing, stuffed with nothing, and tied in a pretty bow. Usually no matter how woefully inadequate her spoken words may sound, there’s nothing that compares to actually reading a transcript. There’s no visual distraction, there’s no non-verbal communication, it’s just the words. But this time, her obvious discomfort, disconnected tone of voice, and almost dazed confusion at times is quite startling. If you watch her face, and listen to the tone of her voice, much of the press conference sounds like a watered down version of the deer-in-the-headlights moment when Katie Couric asked her if there were any other Supreme Court decisions she disagreed with, only without the adrenaline.

Q: Given that this is your first formal press conference on the national stage, what message are you trying to convey?

Palin: I’m trying to convey the message that Republican governors are a unique team, a unique group. They are here. We are here. Together. United and ready to reach out to the new administration to offer solutions that we know will work to meet the challenges that America is facing.

Nothing.

I have an opinion on Sarah Palin
Obviously without Sarah Palin no one tunes in. No one really gives a darn about a bunch of white middle-aged boring Republican governors sniveling to each other about the decrepit state of the once grand ol’ party.

However, put Palin in the room and the media flocks in like swarms of maggots to a piece of rotting week-old raw meat.

Unfortunately, like all rotten meat, this one really stinks. Thus I think what we saw yesterday with Perry perfectly illustrated just how conflicted the Republicans are with their Sarah Palin problem.

They need her around or no one pays any attention to them. However, they also need to have someone close by to strong-arm her to shut her up the minute she starts spouting her incomprehensible Palinese. Because let’s face it, absolutely no one can understand a word she says.

Poor, poor Republicans. Whatever will they do?

As I’ve said many, many times in the last few months.

Karma is a bitch!!!!

Personally I hope Sarah Palin never goes away. She is like a train wreck that keeps crashing and crashing.

To paraphrase the great Willie Wonka, “The suspense of what Palin will say or do next is terrible, I hope it’ll last!”

How sad and so true AKM. Nothing there. All that McCain and the GOP did seemed to inflate an already truly oversized ego.

GOP Govs: “Thanks But No Thanks”

Palin left out of RGA leadership.

In the wake of the Republican Governors Association (RGA) convention this week in Miami, many GOP governors were reluctant to embrace Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) as the party’s leader or presidential candidate for 2012. Today, the RGA made that sentiment official, by not voting her in to any of the organization’s leadership positions.

Not to keep belaboring the topic:

SMR (09:25:46) :

Both SP and Bristol have health care coverage through the state – they would not necessarily use a Native hospital . . . SOOOOOOO, here’s a question – did SP file claims for pre-natal care/delivery/hospitalization, etc. in HER name or Bristol’s – if it was in her name and Bristol was actually the mother, isn’t that insurance fraud?

As the BBC put it; “Even Miss professionally Perky was gloomy.” I did read that there is a sentiment in the GOP that she could be the sacrificial lamb in 2012, while the hopefuls keep their powder dry for 2016.

As soon as the media gives up their infatuation with her, she will fade into the sunset – getting all this free publicity just keeps her talkin’ (in whatever language it is she speaks) and spewin’ – I want her to go away – I want her to go back to AK and answer the tough questions waiting for her and to carry on for the next two years trying to mend all the fences and we’ll see where she comes out after that.

Here’s a funny article by the guy who wrote the Mad Dog Palin article for Rolling Stone (and the Crazy Maverick John McCain article too). It’s not long, a blog really, and some humor to restore your sanity after watching her ickiness:

She’s an empty suit. What I started doing 8/29/08 was watching the clips without sound for the body language and then read the transcripts. This was after I saw McCain playing with his ring and looking at Palin’s backside with Cindy looking over his shoulder in the initial announcement in Ohio.

I can’t listen to her. My mom can’t stand her voice. I think the two of us females, among many, can’t stand her.

Which is evidenced by that question about losing votes from women and Latinos question.

I agree – they probably know that Obama is going to win a second term. Then they are going to want a really strong candidate in 2016 and it ain’t gonna be SP – I just hope she doesn’t win a U.S. Senate seat between now and then . . .

I have become aware through this blog that the people in Alaka pay almost no taxes. The vast bulk of the revenue is generated from the oil leases and various taxes placed on the petroleum industry in your state. Are these taxes based on volume, dollars or profit?
I have spent the last 25 years in the oil and gas industry. The recent spike in gas prices and the even more recent fall of those same prices had very little to do with the REAL increase and subsequent decrease in demand nor from any real fluctuation in supply. The rise and surely the fall were far too rapid for those forces to have such an impact. Speculation was the real culprit. When the energy industry was deregulated, it allowed individuals to buy massive amounts of oil with very little money. That resulted in a large amount of flipping similar to what just transpired in the housing market. With the downturn in the world economy, the speculators all left the market and hence prices spiraled downward.
I say all this for a reason. Exon Mobil gets it. They are already spending billions in alternative energy as evidenced by their recent commercials. If the taxes are based on a windfall profit, those revenues will not be available to the state treasury now. If they are based on dollars, their revenues may be reduced by 2/3 since crude went from approx $150/barrel to $50/barrel. If the revenue is based on gallons, there is every evidence that fossil fuels will not be en vogue in the near to medium future. The natural gas pipeline is perhaps a fine start but seems to be going nowhere quickly.
Is the current governor and energy expert prepared for this downturn and the loss in revenues. Will she be able to give any checks away in the future? Will that money be better spent on infrastruture changes to promote other revenue in the future? Is she capable of leading this state into the new decade?

Surprise no SEAT for SP

The Republican Governors Association announced its new leadership lineup today after their annual meeting concluded Thursday in Miami.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was voted RGA chairman, taking over the top job from Texas Gov. Rick Perry who will now serve as finance chairman. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is vice-chairman, while Florida Gov. Charlie Crist will serve as chair for the annual RGA gala, and Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue will head up the recruitment effort.

Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will also sit on the RGA’s executive committee.

@Tom from PA —

Boy, you must have missed all of my many many many rants about this issue! My husband & I are petro employees (well, I am off with the toddler now, and actually hope never to go back to the oil industry!), so I have commented about this stuff ad nauseum. We are former repubs (actually, the hubby still is repub, but voted for Obama, was going to vote for McCain until he picked Palin) who have had front row seats (industry meetings, work meetings, etc) to watch how her “taking on big oil” is both screwing Alaska and driving OUT oil jobs & investment.

So, the short answer to your question(s) —

No, she is not ready to deal with this. She has been in a unique position, as Gov of Alaska, a state with loads of money, most of it coming from oil companies, to not have to worry her head about budgets. However, the chickens are coming home to roost, as the windfall tax structure that she is crowing about when she says that she took on big oil leaves Alaska in a worse position, once prices fall below $80ish/bbl, than they were in before she took on big oil.

And of course there is the fact that our Permanent Fund account just went from $40 billion to $30 billion with no real hope in sight of any positive movement.

Here’s a good article that sums up a lot of what I’ve been ranting about here on Mudflats for over 2 months now…

http://www.alaskadispatch.com/tundra-talk/1-talk-of-the-tundra/297-does-palin-understand-alaskas-oil-industry.html

On a similar note, I read articles about Obama enacting a windfall tax on oil companies and it makes me cringe. As one of the bloggers said, I think it was Andrew Sullivan, if Sarah Palin was FOR it then that’s a good enough reason for Obama to be against it. That’s a simple view from someone not in the oil industry, but the conclusion that it is a bad idea is still correct! Windfall taxes on an industry that already pays a huge amount of taxes just makes them take their toys away to play somewhere where their return on investment is better.

I thought about commenting a tiny bit about her ridiculous TransCanada pipeline, but the NY Times has a great AP article about it that basically re-states everything that I’ve said on here a bazillion times.

Re: Palin and offspring’s eligibility for IHS (Indian Health Service) health benefits….

In order to be eligible for IHS benefits, you have to be enrolled with a tribal organization such as Tlingit and Haida Indians of Alaska (regional) or a local village recognized tribal government. Both would require proof of your “quantum” or the percentage of your heritage that is verifiable as a Native member of the tribe. If you had a non-native parent but your other parent was, say, the great-grandchild of a tribal member, your “blood quantum” would be 1/16.

great gramma = full
her child whose father is non-native = 1/2
her grandchild whose other grandparents and parents are non-native =1/4
her great grandchild whose other great grandparents, grandparents and parents are non-native = 1/8

Tribes set their own quantums for eligibility; most of them require at least 1/8 blood quantum for enrollment (membership equaling eligibility.)

However, I have always known this to be true: if a non-native is carrying a native baby, her prenatal care is covered.

In comparing coverage/benefits with IHS benefits vs. private insurance, each has their strengths and weaknesses.

If you are IHS eligible and also have private insurance, americare, medicare, or medicaid, IHS WILL bill your insurance first. The patient ultimately has no co-pay.

The optimal menu would be private insurance (giving you choice and access to a wider array of health providers and services) with IHS benefits filling in the gaps (travel and housing) and eliminating co-pays.

That said, what do you think the Palins have? You betcha.

I don’t think this information “helps” but it might clarify a little.

Here is a good question. What does Sarah Palin really want?

What are her true motivations?

Obviously it is not to be a good leader because if that were her true motive she would take the time to study the issues, become well informed so she wouldn’t be embarrassed every time she is interviewed. She would also take some time to learn about how government works

Barack Obama was a judicial law scholar who completed graduate work at Harvard University, headed the Harvard Law Review and then ‘gave back’ by working at very low pay in one of the poorest sections of Chicago. Even if he had motivations for political power at an early age, he took the proper steps to prepare himself by getting an excellent education, by learning about the government and by working within the system to help people.

So what is Sarah Palin’s motivation?

Is it power?
Is it money?
Is it adoration?
Is it to spread her unique personal brand of Christianity to the world?

She obviously has some very strong ambitions completely unmatched by her qualifications but what does she really want?

Or is it as simple as having really nice clothes, having people fuss over her and being able to stay in nice hotels and not have to change diapers?

What makes Sarah Palin tick?

Thank you SMR for the information and confirmation. I try to stop on this site daily but that provides a whole lot of fodder tp read and I missed your earlier comments. I for one have no educated opinion on a windfall profits tax but with oil going so low, I’m not sure if an additional gasoline tax may be in order. For the most part, people are just glad to be well under $3.00/gallon again that they wouldn’t even notice the increase. Perhaps it will prevent people from going back to their old gas guzzling days. The additional revenue will either go to provide jobs for highway construction and bridge repair(the fund the current taxes go to) or directly to alternative energy sources. Either way we keep the treasury from being raided even more.

There was a message there. She thinks she is going to run for president in 2012. Simple. I don’t think she is stupid; I do believe that she is very poorly educated. I believe that may be because there is a flaw in her makeup that makes her ineducable in any meaningful way. Maybe it is an absence of an ability to self-criticize. She set the real bar (not the ego bar) too low for herself far too long ago to try to come back now, at age 44. In now way should she be permitted to acquire or to retain any position of authority over others.

I truly believe that she made-up the labor pains/amniotic fluid/speech story in order to add to the phony frontier woman story line. Her story is simply not possible as she tells it. There is not a single MD(or witch doctor) in the country that would not have advised her to seek immediate medical attention. Therefore, I can only conclude that, once again, Palin lied. Period. I’ve posted this before.. But read it .. See how many traits Barbie fits perfectly..~~ Takes a few min, but wait til you see all her matches..

Profile of the Sociopath
This website summarizes some of the common features of descriptions of the behavior of sociopaths.

Glibness and Superficial Charm

Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as “their right.”

Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

Incapacity for Love

Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.

Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others’ feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet “gets by” by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others’ lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.

Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

——————————————————————————–

Other Related Qualities:

Contemptuous of those who seek to understand them
Does not perceive that anything is wrong with them
Authoritarian
Secretive
Paranoid
Only rarely in difficulty with the law, but seeks out situations where their tyrannical behavior will be tolerated, condoned, or admired
Conventional appearance
Goal of enslavement of their victim(s)
Exercises despotic control over every aspect of the victim’s life
Has an emotional need to justify their crimes and therefore needs their victim’s affirmation (respect, gratitude and love)
Ultimate goal is the creation of a willing victim
Incapable of real human attachment to another
Unable to feel remorse or guilt
Extreme narcissism and grandiose
May state readily that their goal is to rule the world

(The above traits are based on the psychopathy checklists of H. Cleckley and R. Hare.)

She talks, but she never actually SAYS anything, that’s what gets me! Every time I hear her, I feel like I’m severely being ‘dumbed down’! It’s nauseating.

~~

So there is at least one group of Republicans that can act responsibility. Good for them for not “falling” for her.

BTW, Gov. Mark Sanford of SC is a hero of mine because he stood up to Chertoff over REAL ID, sending him a scathing letter bashing the whole concept.

@Tom from PA —

I was just kidding with you about reading my old posts/rants! There were so many of them, and most of the long-time readers here would tell you that they’ve had to be subjected to my rants for ages and give a collective ZZZZZZZZZ…

Right now I have my husband on the job researching windfall vs severance tax issue, as that was brought up elsewhere (a different site) and I would really like to educate a certain brainwashed republican blowhard. As I said, we are repubs/former repubs, but after educating ourselves about our options decided that Obama was the vote for us! Hubby told me today that he is planning to sit down this weekend and craft a long letter to legislators here in AK re: the difficulties of working with Palin, asking them to grow a spine basically and take the long-term view. When you sit in meetings and hear from your bosses that projects are scrapped because the economics don’t work due to the tax burden it is quite obvious that her plan to take on big oil does not work for Alaska and Alaskans, ends up just being a talking point for her, with no real substantive advantage — kind of like everything that comes out of her mouth…

In regard to a gas tax, well, as someone who has just moved back here from the UK, where the gas tax is approx 75% so we were paying roughly $8/gal, I see some benefits to a moderate increase. The roads were certainly better there than here (even though there were no shoulders to speak of in Scotland). While I understand the American frustration with high fuel costs, I do think that we take low prices for granted here. The rest of the world pays much more than we do, and accept that that is the price exacted for their roads/transportation infrastructure. Perhaps they would not be so averse to paying more if they knew the price was going directly to the roads rather than corporate profits. I do agree that it (higher prices) provides some incentive to reduce consumption and further explore alternatives in terms of vehicle sizes & types of power (electric, nat gas, diesel, etc), and that can only be a good thing.

That is another issue that I could go on & on about, but I will spare everyone!

Hard to believe – in real life — Ken and Barbie on the same stage.

What the hell is taking so long?

It is beyond belief to me that this counting process, on this Senate race, will spill over into another week.

While I guess Barbie could kill them, she’s got the weaponry, I don’t think she will.. But, the people who rat her out likely would not talk simply because they likely live in AK and wouldn’t want her wrath if she found out.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT

Congratulations on the fabulous and historic election of President Barack Obama!!!

As we celebrate our new President-elect and all the changes he will bring to our nation, we must not turn a blind eye to the final actions of George Bush.

Incredibly, Washington is already buzzing with Bush’s plans to block all investigations of his crimes and even to pardon everyone involved – including Cheney and himself. Chris Matthews is even counting down the days .

Does Bush have the power to pardon everyone in his administration? Yes.

Will he abuse that power to stay out of jail? Only if we let him.

We must create a groundswell of opposition to any pardons by George Bush, so he understands that he will be impeached and prosecuted for issuing corrupt pardons.

Please help us launch a massive movement against pardons by signing our petition to Congress and telling your friends:
http://democrats.com/pardon?cid=ZGVtczQzNjczOWRlbXM=

We will announce additional plans to stop Bush’s pardons in the coming days. Read more about our efforts and join our discussion here:

———————————————–

Keith and/or Rachel brought this up last night:

If they DO oust Lieberman from his Homeland Security position, Joe will probably switch his party affiliation to Republican.

Which means he would have to run for re-election in the blue, blue state of Connecticut as a Republican. No chance of winning again there !

But, this is the kicker — say the 3 outstanding Senate contests all go to Democrats, that would make it 60 Democrats in the Senate (includes Lieberman).

If he gets bounced from HS, and switches to Republican, that would make it 59-31 in the Senate, and the Democrats lose their filibuster-proof majority.

the problem child (a jerk, also)

Q: Given that this is your first formal press conference on the national stage, what message are you trying to convey?

Palin: I’m trying to convey the message that Republican governors are a unique team, a unique group. They are here. We are here. Together. United and ready to reach out to the new administration to offer solutions that we know will work to meet the challenges that America is facing.
———-
Actually, I think that she finally answered a question. She is at the Republican Governors Conference, which is basically a talking shop. They are holding a press conference. Why else have all the other governors on stage with her (save Crist), unless it is to point up a message of GOP govs, united and ready to reach out to the new administration?

She actually did a (marginally) passable job of trying to deflect the other questions towards the GOP govs topic. She was not interested in answering the questions put to her, she never is, but she was as “on message” as she ever is. The problem was that the press was not interested in the GOP govs topic. They still have way too many unanswered questions about her – because she never gave press conferences during the campaign.

The govs were idiots. They should either have (a) ignored the reporter bait of having Palin do the talking and actually had an effective press conference or (b) just left her alone up there so that they were not tainted by her stench – sure, let it be a press conference about her, not them or the conference.

This way the press conference is simultaneously about her and them. She didn’t answer the questions the press wanted to ask, and they stood behind her, in apparent support. They are tainted by association. Except Crist, who wisely stayed far, far away.

I came upon this yesterday – but feel the need to share.

“Clearly gunning for her party’s presidential nomination in, as she puts it, “12”, Palin has been all over the American media the past few days, and this is a candidate who lost. One gets the impression that it’s the limelight that drives her far more than ideology or even theology. A recent blogger on the New York Times website nailed it: “Sarah Palin wouldn’t close a single door that offers her a chance for what she seeks most: a life where she is always the centre of attention. She cares nothing about politics.””

My 2 cents! I fully agree.

Here is a good question. What does Sarah Palin really want?
____________________________________________

I think anything anyone can bring up as “what Sarah wants” can fit under the larger WANT. I believe Sarah wants to feel better. I don’t think the Reverend Murthee shifted even one of her personal demons and she does what she does to try and shut them up. Ralph Lauren’s Polo pony or the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, it makes no matter, it’s all in the service of the same useless quest.

Enough of that. If I continue I might start to feel sympathy for her.

14 11 2008
womanwithsardinecan

I said it yesterday when I saw her. She looked like she was on an overdose of xanax. I suspect she was on an overdose of other governors explaining the team spirit concept to her. That’s why she was dazed and beaten looking. That press conference was bizarre. Supposedly it was for her, according to the sources before the conference. But then all the govs show up and somebody says it’s a governors’ press conference. But then she gives the little speech and the questions are only for her (because it was billed as HER press conference). Then that weird moment with Gov Perry, which Pat Buchanan thought was him shutting her down, but which most people saw as her backing away and him pulling her back for another question. It was all very weird. I really think maybe she was riding on a cloud of her self delusion of celebrity with all the interviews, and she skipped the first lunch of the conference and wanted to make a splash with the press conference, but then got pulled aside the night before (she looks like she didn’t sleep well) and told she had to go full team spirit in her press conference. That look of hers is the result of her “mind” having to build a new set of rationalizations to keep out reality after being informed that the conference wasn’t about her.
And I’ll repeat my disbelief about the whole no clothes in Wasilla thing. WHY would they load all of the campaign buttons and t-shirts out of the plane and take them to Wasilla to sort and mail back to the campaign but NOT take ANY of the RNC clothes to Wasilla (according to her)? Does this make ANY sense to ANY person paying attention? All you have to do is connect her lies to see them.

I didn’t watch her in the clip. I watched Governor Perry! That was fun. I couple of times, he looked down, and looked like he was trying not to laugh. A couple of times he looked up and seemed like he was trying not to roll his eyes. I think putting her up there for those questions was done on purpose. The republican governors don’t want her around, don’t want her on national stage, and certainly don’t want her to be considered again for an office. She thought she was getting honored or something. What they did was smear her with honey and stake her out near an ant hill. That’s why Governor Perry steers her back. He wants it very clear that she doesn’t want to have a press conference (what real politician doesn’t) and that they don’t support her. No one behind her listening seriously, nodding heads, etc. It was empty directly behind her, so she was on her own, except Perry, who obviously wasn’t paying attention or agreeing. You only saw the others in the long shot.

SWWNBN as in She Who Will Not Be Named. The bad guy in the Harry Potter books was so bad that good people feared to invoke his actual name for fear of thereby summoning his presence. So they instead referred to him as He Who Will Not Be Named.

Also, he spoke Parseltongue, a talent that Harry somehow obtained. Only snakes can understand Parseltongue. Perhaps this is why SWWNBN wanted the Harry Potter books banned!🙂

I about fell out of my chair when I saw Rick Perry standing beside Palin. Rick Perry is a Bushie lap dog, perhaps the ultimate lap dog. He always showed up in the background of Bush photo ops when Duhyba was Governor. Only a Bushie toady could inherit a political machine that could get him reelected with a 30% popularity rating.

If he showed as the “Capable” leader in juxtaposition to Palin………

I wish I could laugh at that image but I just can’t. These people are our elected leaders. Like it or not, we’er heavily dependant on them.

Scott, my heart goes out to the people of Santa Barbara and Goleta. Being struck twice in one year–it truly seems more than one area should have to bear.

I used to live near Scofield Park (Rattlesnake Canyon), and was always vigilant for fire. The shady side of the canyon had not been burned in recorded history, with poison oak “trunks” 4″ in diameter climbing up oak trees. Talk about a fire ladder!

I haven’t checked lately to see if my old home is still there. Tried to call neighbors last night but circuits were down.

If you look at Governor Perry looking at SWWNBN after she answers the third question, you can see that he cannot believe what is coming out of her mouth and it appears that is when he decicded to step in and say they would take one last question. He seemed to be in a hurry to get her off the stage before any more foolishness came out of her mouth.

“It’s nothing wrapped in nothing, stuffed with nothing, and tied in a pretty bow.”
This supposed press conference at the Republican Governor’s Association can’t be more aptly described than that. That sense of “nothingness”, of vacancy and emptiness as opposed to clear, thoughtful, international policy, social commitment, and economic solutions, (albeit conservative) has dogged Governor Sarah Palin ever since the Republican National Convention. The meaningless questioning being done by the main stream media certainly did not help much. It was truly a disappointment for independents – such as myself, who had been waiting to hear some comments on particular issues from the other governors on stage who were left standing there with no chance whatsoever to voice their own ideas. This was sad, sorry, meaningless…BS!

@Ripley in CT: Happy Birthday!

@ NYDem

My take about Lieberman:

Though many lost some respect for him when he went independent after losing the Dem primary, and mine IS a blue state, I thought he gambled on the idea that people are creatures of habit, and would vote for a name they recognized. He won that bet.

And yeah, he tends to vote with the Dems 85% of the time, or so I’ve read.

But if his behavior during the campaign is indicative of how he leans the other 15% of the time, the Dems are already a non-filibuster proof majority, even if the 3 outstanding Senate contests all go to Democrats.

Think of the leverage he’ll have, with or against BOTH sides, if he remains an Ind / Dem. Will ‘keeping’ him a Dem ensure party loyalty? Hard for me to believe so, given his recent actions…

I don’t know that he’ll actually switch his affiliation. (Most people I know didn’t care much for his first switch, I doubt they could handle a Darth Lieberman.)

It will take a far more politically savvy mind than mine to determine how or if he can be trusted.

In my observations of the talking governors and the group, governors of states, of course, meeting in groups that are concerned with their constituents and balancing budgets, regardless of what extremist partisanship could be, also, you know in charge of the legislature of their states, I can’t understand how that woman, the governor, of course, can come to the stage without obviously knowing that she knows that she knows that I know that she has nothing prepared to say at all and if this keeps up, I’m gonna have to be borrowin’ some of those drugs that she takes, also.

She looked like somebody beat her with the Ugly Stick before she got up to the stage and the total lack of affect was kind of startling, since all I’d seen before was the energetic campaigner. (guess the power rush wore off, huh?) The only signs of life were a couple of little snaps at questions she clearly didn’t like. Those were fun. Hey, Alaska! How ya gonna keep her down in Wasilla, now that she’s seen DC????? also

One more comment: whoever said that they’re so impressed with Mark Sanford is welcome to him and the sooner, the better. He’s an entertaining fellow, but his exercise in Libertarian governance has not gone over well here in SC. (I KNOW, he was elected twice, but not by me!) I personally thing what Sarah wants is *not to be poor anymore*. She grew up in Sandpoint ID; she went to a series of colleges; she’s ranted a little about not having bucks growing up.

I’m guessing (maybe I’m wrong) that she’s the type of “pulling the ladderup behind me” republican/libertarian I’ve run into before: Poor (and perhaps horrible for other reasons well) childhood results in lots of “I want for me” and “I ain’t never going through that again, no matter what”. Combine that with disgust/desire for revenge at other poor people who perhaps added to her misery, and some “if I had to go through with it then so does everybody else”, and I think that’s our Sarah.

A beginning in poverty that did not lead to compassion for the poor.

Read Harry Truman’s radio address to the nation announcing the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. It is quite remarkable given the current religious beliefs of Sarah Palin and her wing of the Republican Party and the current situation with Iraq and Iran. After I watched the video and replayed the part where Perry guides her back to the podium, this thought struck me: She was thoroughly “spanked” by the RGA and told that she HAD to do a press conference because she was, after all, the star witness to the McCain/Palin debacle. She obviously got no help from her fellow govs for this event. On her own she is a sock puppet with no owner.

The reference I was looking for was President Truman’s Diary entry of July 25, 1945. I found it very interesting when I cam across it in a book a good 15 years ago:

“July 25 1945

We met at 11 A.M. today. That is Stalin, Churchill, and the U.S. President. But I had a most important session with Lord Mountbatten and General Marshall before that. We have discovered the most terrible bomb in the history of the world. It may be the fire distruction [destruction] prophesied in the Euphrates Valley Era, after Noah and his fabulous Ark. Anyway we think we have found the way to cause a disintegration of the atom. An experiment in the New Mexican desert was startling–to put it mildly. Thirteen pounds of the explosive caused the complete disintegration of a steel tower 60 feet high, created a crater 6 feet deep and 1200 feet in diameter, knocked over a steel tower 1/2 mile away and knocked men down 10,000 yards away. The explosion was visible for more than 200 miles and audible for 40 miles and more.

This weapon is to be used against Japan between now and August 10th. I have told the Sec. of War, Mr. Stimson to use it so that military objectives and soldiers and sailors are the target and not women and children. Even if the Japs are savages, ruthless, merciless and fanatic, we as the leader of the world for the common welfare cannot drop this terrible bomb on the old Capitol or the new.

He and I are in accord. The target will be a purely military one and we will issue a warning statement asking the Japs to surrender and save lives. I’m sure they will not do that, but we will have given them the chance. It is certainly a good thing for the world that Hitler’s crowd or Stalin’s did not discover this atomic bomb. It seems to be the most terrible thing ever discovered, but it can be made the most useful.

I agree with comments that suggest Sarah Palin wants the spotlight. She also seems to like power although she does not seem to understand the kind of power she could actually have as a governor. She actually seems to have a very small scope when it comes to her power. She uses it for what amounts to petty purpose: gaining attention, bullying, gleaning relatively petty mounts of money (like the per diem). . . she’s like a recent college grad with a job that sends them on business trips and the young person gets all excited about the free trip, the restaurant meals. . . She actually seems to be very weirdly immature, undeveloped. . . very, very shallow.

I have not been following the comments to this blog for long (only a couple weeks) (I have followed Mudflats posts, just recently began to read the comment threads). . . so this may have already been discussed but one aspect of Palin’s lust for attention and the perks of position. . . She seems to be really locked into the cultural stereotype that her appearance is much of her power. . . She seems to think that, like a beautiful designer suit, if she puts on the ‘veneer’ of being a governor, well, that it works a bit like make up and fashion. . . like she becomes what she ‘looks’ like. . . I see that I am not being clear here so I’ll stop . . . but I think there is something about Palin’s shallowness that is tied up with her gender identity, playing on appearance for her value instead of her substance.

She seems a lot like George W., if you ask me. He always had the trappings of wealth and upper class. . . but the two of them seem similar in that they think if they put on the right outfit, sit in the right desk and get to be the decider, well, then they ARE powerful and right.

Of course, George W. had a lot more people to create his facade. The neo cons groomed George W. for many years and, quite honestly, I think McCain was pressured to choose Palin as his Vice Pres nominee because the neo cons knew she would benefit from the white hot spotlight. I don’t think any repugs seriously believed McCain would win this year and they saw an opportunity to start spinning their new manchurian candidate. . .

I almost felt sorry for her, listening to her speech at the governors assembly. .. she, like, didn’t say anything. And she wasn’t even perky.

And what was wrong with all those schmo governors who stood by and let her answer all the questions like she was their spokes person?

I wonder if she will be asking Alaska taxpayers to start paying for her to have some speech writers? She obviously needs someone to write for her.

Was that guy mafioso? He actually did force her to go to the podium and he was the one who also decided there would be one more question answered. Can she not decide those things herself? That was very weird.

I read AKM’s transcript of what palin said. Did she contradict herself or is it a transcript typo?

”but treating everybody equally…we’re not going to let that get in the way of doing what’s right for our country…”

It’s mind bottling to me how conservatives would want this woman to be their republican leader to run in 2012. Yet, her favorable ratings from the conservative was in it’s 70% percent as shown on the news today. Isn’t that what happend in Alaska when Alaskans rated this woman in the high 80% margin and made her the most popular govenor before they really knew the real Palin. Well, this is sure going to be a wake up call for the conservative base following the same foot step as Alaskans when they realize how wacko thsi woman really is. I’m sorry but she sounds ditzy to me everytime she opens up her mouth!

Tree Fitz,

Amen! You’ve just said it all exactly what I was thinking about Ms wacko. This woman is too immature to be running for any type of position. For goodness sake just look at the way she talks. I can’t understand a word she’s saying everytime a question is ask of her. All she does is ramble on and on off the topic! What a real airhead.

Yup I agree, not much talk about her today. Boy am I glad not seeing her in the spotlight for one day! Instead it was all about our president-elect Obama in his choice of secretary state which was speculated that it might just be Hillary if she wants the job. I think everyone including the GOP and media are all starting to get tired of hearing this nutcase woman talk with nonsense. Soon she’s be old news and out of the media for good. She’ll be none as the one hit wonder of VP nominee. You know what they say, “Easy come, easy go”!

Jamie, Floridian in France,

I have to agree with you on that issue about Palin’s pregnancy. It doesn’t make any sense if you look at the whole picture about her claim. No one knew she was pregnant including her closiest friends from work until she announced her pregnancy at 7-8months along already. And why would you even travel being at 8-9 months and have to drive back home right away when you’re having contractions just to give birth in Alaska. Any woman in their right mind would take a precaution for the sake of the baby and just give birth at the nearest hospital in town. Then she went back to work just 2-3 days after giving birth. I don’t believe for a second that any woman would be in the right shape or form to want to go back to work just 2-3 days after giving birth. One would have to stay at the hospital at least a day or so before they are released home anyways. Besides, a woman’s body needs recovery time before being back on their feet for any type of circumstance especially for work. I remember when I gave birth to all my kids, all I wanted to do was get home to rest in bed and spend time with my newborn. So therefore it just doesn’t add up. It’s is just outright wierd and crazy how she chose to handle her last pregnancy term and after giving birth.

I saw only part of this tape at first… now seeing the whole thing I’m just amazed at how truly awful she was! She talks for darn near 7 minutes and says absolutely NOTHING. Wow. Scratch the surface and all you get is air.

She looked truly uncomfortable. And, she sounded like she was speaking to high schoolers. Oh, what I would give $ to see, is a wide shot that shows the other Gov’s faces as she’s speaking!!!! They must have been aghast… given that she’s been sent out there to promote them and speak for them! Yikes!!!

If she’s the saviour of the Republican party, they will be wandering in the wilderness for many, many years!

OT – does anyone know how to change one’s snowflake? I really hate this green one!

On the pregnancy thing… I totally agree. The whole story just stinks!! Not one shred of it sounds credible.

And to the earlier question of what does she want? I think it is simple:

1. She wants to forward her (extreme) religious beliefs in the world, by being in a position of power to make the laws of our land conform to those beliefs .
2. She wants adoration (and all the attention, fame, money, gifts and clothes that go with that). She likes to be liked.

I just knew I’ve heard Palins words before. This took a while to recall, because I was young at the time and, shall we say, chemically enhanced. This Beatles tune “The Walrus”, did not make sense then, nor does it now.

But hey, also, gosh golly, again, ain’t it, I believe, a hoot? You betcha! Wink wink, shoulder hoist.

Dare to compare! Try discern any sense what so ever from either of the following; ( Every time you hear Palin speak from now on, this song will play through your head for the rest of the day. It will stop your ears from bleeding as you hum along)

Palin;
I’m trying to convey the message that Republican governors are a unique team, a unique group. They are here. We are here. Together. United and ready to reach out to the new administration to offer solutions that we know will work to meet the challenges that America is facing.
I am the eggman (woo), they are the eggmen (woo), I am the walrus,
Coo coo, kachoo

The Beatles, The Walrus;
I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.
See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly.
I’m crying.

Sitting on a cornflake, waiting for the van to come.
Corporation t-shirt, stupid bloody Tuesday.
Man, you been a naughty boy, you let your face grow long.
I am the eggman (woo), they are the eggmen (woo), I am the walrus,
Coo coo, kachoo.

Mister City P’liceman sitting
Pretty little policemen in a row.
See how they fly like Lucy in the Sky, see how they run.
I’m crying.
I’m cry, I’m crying, I’m cry, I’m crying.

Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog’s eye.
Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess,
Boy, you been a naughty girl and you let your knickers down.
I am the eggman (woo), they are the eggmen (woo), I am the walrus,
Coo coo, kachoo.

Sitting in an English garden waiting for the sun.
If the sun don’t come, you get a tan from
Standing in the English rain.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen, I am the walrus,
Coo coo kachoo ka coo coo kachoo.

Expert texpert choking smokers,
Don’t you think the joker laughs at you? (ho ho ho, he he he, ha ha ha)
See how they smile like pigs in a sty, see how they snide.
I’m crying.

Semolina Pilchard, climbing up the Eiffel Tower.
Elementary penguin singing Hare Krishna.
Man, you should have seen them kicking Edgar Allan Poe.
I am the eggman, they are the eggmen, I am the walrus,
Coo coo kachoo ka coo coo kachoo
(rhythmical speaking along with juba’s).
Juba juba juba, juba, juba, juba, juba, juba, juba juba. Juba juba…..

The Press conference was very well organizied. It failed to address the real issue that the GOP needed for people to hear, but it was good. Sarah Palin seemed most comfortable talking, and she was not incoherent. She did a great job, and I think our future of the Republican party lied within her.
