What about an Obama name??? I removed the ‘not Palin’ from my name after the election and it feels better. Represents the change of challenge, not of her as VP any longer. Now we have other challenges…so time for new names? I like mine though perhaps could add something that speaks to the call to all of us to the work that there is now to be done. Thoughts?

Just out of interest, the 0.5% is the point at which the state will pay for a recount. My understanding is that you can ask for a recount beyond that, but you’ll have to pony up the cash yourself. Or am I wrong?

It requires the candidate or a group of ten voters to request a recount, just another snippet of useless information I seem to have collected this election cycle. I bet we all know a lot more than we did a few months ago, some of which we’d like to forget.🙂

After the one in the Oakland Hills post graduating from Cal in 1986, I couldn’t even look at the hills, with as many homes were decimated and people killed because they couldn’t get out of the twisty streets. On the bright side (in the congressional race), even if Young manages to pull this election out, he is unlikely to finish the term. He didn’t spend millions on lawyers because he had nothing to hide. Ethan will get to run in the special election as soon as Young is charged and convicted.
Then there is Ben Stevens, and Sarah Palin too. All 3 have a surplus of dirty laundry coming to light. And I bet the FBI still has its eye on Alaska politics. And if they don’t, well we should send them about 2000 emails!

After all this, I have just one question AKM.

Does Begich have to get beyond 50% to avoid a “run-off” election.

You have the AIP candidate polling at over 4%.

Off Topic, but interesting Food For Thought.

The theory is almost too perfect to be true. Barack Obama, the son of politically progressive parents, was born Aug. 4, 1961—almost nine months to the day after John F. Kennedy was elected to the White House. Is it possible Obama was conceived on that historic night?

@Miemaw – I’m not aware of the possibility of a run off election, I haven’t heard mention of that possibility. All I know that can happen is a recount, probably ad infinitum, until someone conceeds. No candidate needs to get to 50%, and I believe they can win by a single vote.

So we’re at .35 percent. If Begich gets over 0.5 percent, any recount would have to be paid by the GOP. Under that, and the state pays for it

Hopefully the Republicans wouldn’t want to go to that expense for a recount for a convicted felon! Never know. Maybe the lady in the picture with the $#&% The Feds t-shirt will be the lead fundraiser for them.

Bec, Is a recount required if the difference is less than .5%? Stevens seems tone-deaf, but with several Repub senators coming out against him, you’d think he might want to lose gracefully as opposed to winning, losing his appeal, and getting booted out of the senate.

I do believe that Sarah’s 15 minutes are drawing to a close. Taking into consideration the reaction of the other Republican Govs at their conference and the continued bad press from the McCain campaign people, I think they are bored to the tits with her. They do rent out rooms at Trinity between course schedules.

Dingle and all of the West of Ireland is awe inspiring…the music is wonderful, the ancient sites incredible and the Aran Islands numbing. On one trip, we rented a cottage in the Burren and the Gods smiled at us: the meteor showers were in full swing and out on the Burren there were NO lights, except the ones we extinguished at our cottage…not a McCottage, but a genuine one, deep in the Burren. Pulnabourne called me so strongly!

“Tis a wonderous place, Ireland, is it not?

BTW, I’m getting ready for bed, but I wanted to share this. I watched an old movie tonight which I highly recommend, if you haven’t seen it or its been awhile.

I watched “Inherit the Wind”. starring Spencer Tracy. It’s about the Scopes Monkey Trial which took place in 1924 (I think).

Anyway it was really interesting to see it and how it fits into the narrative of today and how people like Palin and extremist Repugs think (or should I say don’t think. The way the Bible is used to restrict the mind is fascinating and to realize how people who believe in creationism as an exact historic account is so blinded by logic.

Cassie, I’m jealous – meteors and a daughter in Ireland.

Visited the Burren and it was fascinating – but nothing as spectacular as you describe. Stopped at the Cliffs of Moher – it was rainy and overcast – no views, but that was really the only bad weather day. Also went to the Aran Islands and Blasket islands (lots of sheep and a great beach).

It must be getting late – I can see pictures in my mind, but all the place names are vanishing from my brain. We did get to see several ancient sites – ruined castles, Newgrange and other burial mounds – darn, I need to dig out my pictures and guidebooks before it all fades away.

Had a car accident in a small town whose name I seem to have forgotten. My niece hit a parked van while trying to make room for oncoming traffic – those streets are narrow! Funniest thing – we stopped in all the stores along the main street trying to find the owner of the van and everyone in the stores thought we were nuts – guess those kind of minor accidents happen all the time and nobody cares. And while we were searching for the owner, the van disappeared. Well, at least we weren’t the ugly Americans who “hit and ran.”

And you’re absolutely right – the music in the pubs in Dingle was awesome. I’m really hoping to go back.

When I saw your new name, I immediately heard a dear old friend of mine, his sweet tenor singing “My Wild Irish Rose” to his wife. She was a lovely person, and they loved each other dearly. Thanks for the great memory.

About the Santa Barbara fire–my relatives have been working with the Red Cross for the last couple of days. They’ve only had to open up one shelter, which is nice, but I imagine that a lot of people from Montecito have enough money to go to a hotel. They’ve lost a lot of structures there.

On a happier note: What’s that sound I hear coming from Alaska? Is it AKM and God moving the high boy dresser, the chiffarobe, the anvil, several ice bergs, and community hockey rinks in front of that nailed shut door? It is! And the old fashioned air vent over the top is being barricaded with moose pies and rebar. Woo hoo. Go Begich. We want to write Senator Elect Begich really really soon.

Wish the counting would finish faster – then we can get on the edge of our seats for the Minnesota recount. I’m guardedly optimisitic about Franken – Coleman seems to be worried.

So looking ahead – if Young is indicted and goes to trial and gets convicted and loses his seat (well, I can wish, can’t I) do any of you Alaskans think Berkowitz would make another run? Still find it hard to believe that the polls were so wrong on that race!

This news about Begich is fantastic. Woo hoo!!

Alaska politics is going to be interesting for a long time, I think.

I am a bit surprised by the Anchorage Daily News story about Trooper Wooten. I know newspaper journalism aint what it used to be but ADN reported such a little story. I expected to read something about the nature of these calls. Would the State Patrol keep the statements made in the calls private because they were threatening? I find no content that reports what kinds of calls, what was said, why the calls prompted them to move Wooten. . . . gosh, they didn’t give in to the Governor’s intimidation. It seems wrong to give in to anonymous threats. . . unless people’s wellbeing is involved.

Maybe I’m just nosy, wanting more deets about Palin?

Hi everyone! Go Begich!

Where do you all get your energy from? I’m having a hard time keeping up and getting caught up with everything else. What are your secrets?

Couple of things:

@ Chief Shikago

I had some tears and smiles for you yesterday in sympathy for the child you lost. Tough stuff that ALD – the disorder portrayed in the 1992 movie “Lorenzo’s Oil”, right? And pretty rough to have lost a child. My heart goes out to you.

I’ve been to a few funerals of kids with disabilities who have died too young. Reason being is I that I have a child with significant disabilities myself and so you come across a lot of different disabilities by interacting with other families who also have a family member with significant challenges. My now 20 year old daughter is presumed to have Rett Syndrome (presumed because we’ve never had the expensive gene test, since we didn’t intend to have another, and the gene marker wasn’t found until @ 1998)…

@ Other posters. I put a rum cake recipe up in the forum…

“A Catholic priest in South Carolina has decided that the democratic act of casting a vote is, in some cases, a mortal sin. Therefore, he has decided that parishioners who voted for Barack Obama are not entitled to the grace of Jesus Christ through communion until they’ve done penance.”

I saw that there were a couple of good sources for the book thrown out to you, look forward to hearing more once you’ve had a chance to follow up.

Maybe children with ALD can illustrate? Maybe it can be a fundraiser with a foreword by your son’s astronaut friend? what a wonderful way to honor your son that would be!

Lorenzo had a much longer life as the oil shows the ability to halt the fast progression of ALD, but Lorenzo spent most of those years in a vegetative state, not pretty. Honestly I never could bring myself to watch the movie. Having an ALD boy was sad enough to last 10 life times. My son only lived for 10 months from the dx. It was hideous to watch him progress. Thanks for asking.

Hard to make sense of some of the things we go through, but much harder to watch someone you love go through something, especially a child. Sorry you’ve had such challenges…

With the presumed Rett Syndrome (RS) discovered around 8 months old, except for a seizure at 3 months, everything else seemed normal up to that point. Then, in addition to the RS, my daughter had a stroke at age 8 unrelated to the RS, although there are hardly any residuals from the stroke at this time.

[Worse than the stroke itself was the treatment for the stroke with steroids. Even though she only took steroids for about a month, the recovery from the effects of the steroids was about 8 months (iatrogenic Cushings with moon facies and Dowager’s hump, significant weight gain, and reversible muscle myopathy so severe that she couldn’t hold her head up off the table when eating). With the stroke we also got to learn about all the blood vessels radiating out from the Circle of Willis in the brain – a real advanced course in brain anatomy.]

Today, I have one very sweet kid who we transport in a wheelchair and is sort of like having a giant toddler. At age 20, her cognitive age is about that of an 8 months old and her physical skills approach those of a 2 year old. She finger feeds but does not use utensils, except if we pre-spear something on a fork and hold it vertically, she will put it in her mouth and then drop the fork. She does not get what is called “2 step cause and effect” or tool use and she doesn’t understand picture symbols (like she can’t understand that a drum sick is for hitting a drum or that touching a flat picture of popcorn will get the real item). She has fairly good use of her upper extremities but cannot self-propel her wheelchair, probably because she doesn’t understand it, although she gets excited and can jump the chair forward with her body. She has minor contractures of her lower extremities, but can crawl around the house and climb up and down from a chair, bed or couch and unstably weight bear or stand for a few seconds holding on to the kitchen counter. She communicates by eye pointing, facial expressions, and just grabbing for the thing she wants (no verbal speech, assistive technology, or sign language). This is her last year in public school and then we don’t know what she’ll be doing after that…

@Kidsquid/Cassie/whomever else is engaged in the tax exempt issue —

Am I missing something here? How does paying taxes preclude any person or organization or church from doing good deeds for others?

It seems pretty straightforward to me — if a religious institution of any kind cannot keep the church/state thing separate then they must forfeit tax exempt status.

It doesn’t mean that they have to stop doing good things! They can pay their taxes and DEDUCT any expenses they have for their charitable acts.

It has always seemed to me that there are too few churches who don’t abuse the tax exempt thing, anyway.
