Ahhhhh….. This Makes Me Feel Better.

12 11 2008

I’ve been having mental whiplash since the election.  I vacillate between thinking that somehow, some way, Sarah Palin is going to use her voodoo magic to end up in the White House, and then thinking that there is no more certain way to engender the implosion of the Republican Party than to get her on the ticket.  And back and forth my brain goes, like it was watching a tennis match.

So, I really liked stumbling across this article by Frank Shaeffer, a recovered Republican operative who blogs on Huffington Post.

Who voted for McCain/Palin in bigger numbers than they even voted for Bush/Cheney? Only one shrinking group: uneducated white folks in the deep south and a few folks in Appalachia. Take away the white no-college-backwoods-and/or-southern McCain/Palin vote and the Republicans would have been approaching single digit electoral college oblivion.

Sarah Palin will never hold national office nor will any Republican at the presidential level for a long time to come. Why? Because America has uneducated jerks in it but is not a nation of uneducated jerks. The Republicans are done, hoisted on the petard of their own “southern strategy.”

The Republican Party is only a step away from becoming the fringe of the fringe, identified more with cross-burning weirdos wearing hoods, folks like the Alaska secessionist party, all those gun owners stocking up on assault weapons before the “Socialist/United Nations/Obama/Muslim” conspiracy comes to fruition, than with anything remotely like a serious national political force.

The Republican Party–and I speak as a former lifelong Republican who, up through the 2000 primary campaign supported John McCain and even worked for him by arguing his case on various conservative and religious radio stations–is now the toy of the Rush Limbaugh windbags. These folks include outright crazies (such as Sarah Palin’s Assemblies of God pals who are waiting for Spaceship Jesus to rescue them and/or rooting out “witches” from their midst), white racists and a few not-very-bright attention seekers, including Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity etc.

[snip]

What’s the best defense against the rube/Palin voters derailing the Republican Party forever? If the statistics of who voted for whom are correct, the education of white people in the deep South and their economic empowerment is the best answer. Maybe it will take a black Democratic president to figure out some affirmative action program that can get our southern born-again white underclass into colleges and thereby save the Republican party.

Don’t you feel better too?

I emailed this article to several people today as soon as I read it. It is wonderful!!!!

Now, back to my rant: How many zillions of times have I said this stuff on this blog? What has taken so long for people to understand that the foremost energy expert in the nation knows NOTHING?

See article in which someone calls Bible Spice out on her ignorance and lays out the issues that you all have listened to me rant about for two whole months now!

http://www.alaskadispatch.com/tundra-talk/1-talk-of-the-tundra/297-does-palin-understand-alaskas-oil-industry.html

Sorry that I have to use caps to express my frustration guys/gals/my friends, will experiment with the bolds and stuff now…

Brilliantly said! The other ones who voted the McCain/Palin ticket are those that bought into the POW/Military man thing. If he ain’t on the ticket, who can she get to fill in that gap? And who except another one like her, uber-conservative evangelical, will accept to be her VP candidate (and let her go first)? No one with strong credentials, that’s for sure. So if she runs and IF (bigger if) she gets the nomination, which would be highly unlikely, would there really be any Repug blindly ambitious enough to run with her?

Doesn’t the Sean Hannity love connection thing on his site just sound like a very special sort of hell? Yuk, a bunch of Rick Davises & Tucker Boundses.

I know that’s a bit off topic, but I saw the name Sean Hannity and it just popped into my head, obviously I am still traumatized by the idea of it even though I only went to his site once right after the Bible Spice frenzy began at the RNC…

I felt perfectly fine once her and grandpa got their expensively underweared asses handed to them. Every interview she’s made since then just speaks to the amazing ignorance she has about anyone who isn’t a racist, narrow-minded homophobic snowflake baby saver. She continues to ‘shore up’ her anti-logic speak with non-answers even after she has about nothing to lose.

Sarah Palin, give back the microphone and go home instead of digging deeper into your well of lies and backwoods antics.

I think he rocks, and you’re right, I think he’d be okay with it.

My daughter was obviously quite bored being at home with me today (no preschool this morning), because tonight she was using her little toy cell phone to phone friends to invite them over to play w/her tomorrow. I was “annoying” her (she said) because I was shushing her making her go upstairs to go to bed, so guess what she did. She called Sarah Palin and asked her to come over. Now ordinarily she refers to Sarah Palin as “that mean lady who is friends with John McCain” but tonight when she needed to express her frustration with me she figured she’d press my buttons by phoning Sarah Palin. Actually, was pondering whether or not we’d visit the UK in May, immediately following daughter’s graduation, but then this move to Calgary came up…

I am desperate to get back to the UK (and have been to Stockholm before, nice place), but am pretty sure that I am going to be in the midst of moving nightmare in May.

If I’m not, if we are able to sell our house soon and ship ahead our things between now & then (which means we’ll essentially be living out of suitcases for ages in a furnished rented place), the trip to the UK might be back on the table. If I’m in the UK I don’t see why a jaunt to Sweden would be out of the question…

I do think she is digging her own grave with all these interviews, also… Those of us who wondered why she wasn’t allowed out in the nedia during the campaign are getting that answer loud and clear right now.

Over the past few days I’ve been trying to work out why it us that she exerts such a horrible hold over us – because I think we have to admit she does – and I do wonder whether it’s because many of us have our own Sarah Palin in our past and/or we’ve had personal experience of issues related to her extremism (abortion/homosexuality). Than there’s also the morbid fascination of watching a train wreck in action…

AKM,

I think that Palin on the ticket is way too close–no, we do not want to get that close to going over the edge for good…

Watched PBS and the Queen of England–tonight they showed her attending the state dinner at the White House. (old footage) We couldn’t help wondering what Palin would add to such a picture. She’d probably put big hairy hides all over the lovely rose room (gag)..etc. I’m sure the Queen would just love to catch that Palinese language. It seems everyone in the country is droppin’ those g’s.

You’ve probably all read everything Andrew Sullivan said today. Should we make him an honorary Alaskan? Please? He really calls the press on their playing along with the Queen with all the clothes.

12 11 2008
Bear Woman

Palin is GOOD at so many things — showing how ignorant she is about the world, her own oil and gas tax and lease system in Alaska, what a terrible mother she is to all of her kids, and how her salad speak means nothing….

PLEASE let a viable, responsible candidate appear to run against her in 2010!!

Sadly, I have a step daughter and her husband who reside in WVA and work in VA that love JM/SP. They could not figure out why I so dislike SP….. Of course these are the same 30 somethings who figure life is about “working the system” which includes their biological parents so that they paid no money down on a house, have an adjustable rate mortgage, and it is now worth $50-75K less than they paid for it but expect to have someone make up this deficit for them. They are also total bigots and act (at home) like the redneck SP is. Of course, they don’t think SP would be aghast (nor their employers) at their hate speech and the fact that they grow and do drugs, sell them when it is convenient at concerts, and set up car accidents so they can collect inflated insurance payouts….

Sorry folks…..

One question that has been bantered back and forth is how does SP or others like her get so far. It is easy. They seem affable, friendly, interested and capable on entering an organization for the first time. They come in, make some efforts, take credit for everything, are snide and condescending to those they consider lesser than they are and drive them out with their mean spiritedness, and then surround themselves with “yes people” who want to ride on coattails and claim success without doing any work. They then require those who have a real need for their paychecks to do their work with the threat that if they don’t they will be fired (or shut out of a volunteer organization) and blacklisted from other employers or groups in town. This allows for a quick rise to power and retention until a new star arrives on the scene. For people like SP, no one notices how little they truly do because they speak in salad splatter very quickly and no one can get a word in edgewise. They make sure things are not in writing and their salad splatter is so convoluted that many things can be left to interpretation at a later date. (Perfect exampe is SPs 3 stories about how she accepted the call to be VP). What SP forgot about is her words are tape recorded in these interviews and those who care will have transcripts made. Of course those how are enamored with her pay no attention because she makes them feel special until she no longer needs them.

This probably OT from where things are now but had to put in my 2 cents….

12 11 2008
Bear Woman

Again, OT — Bev Harris should be very interested in looking at what the vote counts in Alaska were before any precincts reported (the really early votes) and what the vote counts are in these last 90,000 votes are then compare them (percentage wise) to what the “vote” was on election day. Look at the Begich/convicTED race shows now — If you don’t think votes were misapplied, stolen, etc. — maybe SP can sell you her Bridge to Nowhere!

Anyone remember when Michael Jackson the entertainer did a TV interview to dispel rumors about his inappropriate behavior with young boys? He only dug himself deeper into controversy during the interview with his behavior and answers.

I think of his interview when I see Sarah Palin on TV now. It’s extreme self-absorption. “How can anyone not love me? I’m wonderful!”.

12 11 2008

It’s the train wreck. We’ve had Bush for 8 years and here comes a person that is definitely dumber than he is..also more publicly hateful. Extreme right wingers have gained power in European countries while we sat and watched it all from the outside. At least our President doesn’t openly say he thinks crime is caused by the immigrants and tries to ban non-Christian religious symbols. Then here comes Palin palin around with her Muslim-haters who think every one out of 5 Americans classifies as a terrorist. It’s fascinating. It was scary at first before we were told that no, it wasn’t even close to being a tight race. In the end, she’s just an endless stream of insanity who’s too dumb to let it go for the sake of her self-esteem and family..the nation is laughing at her and she just doesn’t get it yet.

Since Obama rocks, I think he’d be okay with your granddaughter’s name for him.

I emailed this to my Congressman. I will keep y’all updated if I get a response. I know I don’t stand a chance, but I had to try.

Dear Mr. Moore,

I am just an ordinary person who lives in your district, except I have magical skills. Every time I voted for you in Wyandotte County, you won the county. When I moved to Johnson County and voted for you, you won Johnson County for the first time! Now, you can pretty much sit back and relax, as your Congressional seat is safe. I will keep voting for you and the magic will continue. You did notice that Nancy Boyda didn’t keep her seat. Do you know why? My sister also has magical skills, and she moved out of Lawrence to Wisconsin. She sends her apologies to your colleague.

So, I REALLY want some tickets to the inauguration on January 20. I promise, I have no intent to sell them. I seriously want to go. You see, it has been a very long 8 years, and my brother lacks magical skills. He couldn’t deliver Missouri for Obama, despite his hundreds of hours canvassing in Joplin. So he deserves to go with me to the Inauguration of our 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama.

I am not a major campaign contributor and I have no political “clout.” I am, in fact, just an average constituent who works hard. Would it help if I pull the, “My daughter is in the Army” card? Because if I have to use her, I will.

I have no idea how to get anything that the privileged people get, because I have never been one, but I promise to remain in your district and use my magical skills to keep you in office for whatever you want. Want Sen. Brownback’s seat? I will use my skills. (Although I can’t guarantee my skills work for Senatorial candidates. So far, they haven’t…they might only work for you…)

Anyway, I know you are getting lots of requests for tickets, and I guess you owe people favors. I don’t have the money to buy favors, but I will gladly accept lawn seats. No one I know has ever been to any sort of inauguration, and I promise to take pictures, blog about it, only say great things about you, and send letters to all of the newspapers about your wonderful act. Think of the human interest story! A complete nobody gets tickets to the most important inauguration of all time!

I have two rescue dogs and a rescue cat. Does that help?

I’m a nice person. How’s that?

I don’t mind sharing a name with your wife. (How can you resist?)

Well, thanks for your time in reading this, and please think about my magical voting skills when considering how to disperse your tickets. And my brother REALLY deserves to go, since, you know…he lacks the magical voting skills….

Thanks for reading this, Mr. Moore’s secretary, and please forward this to him if you feel like average, ordinary people…not wealthy nor privileged…should have an opportunity to watch history happen.

Sincerely,
Your Constituent in Kansas District 1

Don’t forget that she has only been Gov for one and a half years and during that time she ignored most every issue or had someone else take care of it, and just concentrated on pushing the gas pipeline (which was already in the works) and she did that anyway by favoring TransCanada because of connections, and she hired and was followed around the entire time by a big wig NY PR person who’s job it was to get her in the national spotlight. She just hasn’t been around long enough to be known for what she is.

And as mayor, she just concentrated on her own far right religious agenda and building up Wasilla, both of which probably pleased at least a large part of her constituency.

HA! Wow, that was alot of information that I just read, I finished the articles about Palin being impeached, IF there is a god please, please please, oh yes there is a god and he answered my prayer for an obama victory. sorry all the palin is rubbing off i cant seem to keep a solid thought or sentence.

SO, I emailed Larry King live, to have him ask questions so we wouldnt have to listen to the same old things SP has been going on and on about. In regards to her not being interviewed, my friend was telling me, “we didnt hear much from her before the big election, but now even the people in Russia can hear her, she just goes on and one.” that struck me as really funny! But, the question I asked them to ask her wasnt asked at all. It had to do with the scientists placing the polar bears and beluga whales on the endangered species list. SP, took them off, in order to do the drilling for oil.

But, it was pretty much the same information, just in a different sequence.

I really wonder when this will all end. I will go to bed, knowing that Begich is ahead YAY. So, gnite all and thanks for the links Re: the oil and impeaching SP.

I hope the Palinistas keep talking up Sarah Palin, and I hope that she continues her frequent interviews. It just reminds intelligent people that most of us don’t speak Palinese.
If you think about it; McCain wasn’t even drawing crowds until Sarita Palon came into the picture, so in effect Obama beat her just as much as he beat McCain.
This weirdness of the Palinistas egging her on is a good thing. Daily, even now she demonstrates her obvious lack of credentials; if she continues speaking on interviews at this rate, she’ll win the election for us Democrats; kinda like what she did this time around. Two times a charm. She’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Good night…. Sweet dreams of a Begich victory

SP did not de-list Belugas or Polar Bears as endangered species — she doesn’t have that power as only a governor. What she did do was to ignore and try and hide state scientists recommendations that they be listed as endangered when a FOIA request for those documents was made. Fortunately one or more of the scientists or other staff leaked their recommendation memos. She tried to hide them under the “deliberative process” restriction.

I’m from AK and have been most of my life….. Sadly what she did re ignoring the scientist recommendations has been going on a long time in Alaska over many administrations (both Repug and Democratic). Frequently wildlife managers recommendations were ignored or softened to allow big business (be it oil companies, timber, mining or large scale fishing interests) to continue on with the least number of restrictions possible.

if the only positive that comes out of this election is that the republicans return to their true roots, then obama has accomplished much

but seeing that it will be newt vs steele for rnc chair, i dont see that happening

both newt and steele are educated men…who both play to the ignorant on the party

i have a friend who is a conservative, who has a phd in physics, and who honestly told me that one does not need a harvard education to lead the country.

(he works with hospitals in their ocncology depts, working on the constant recalibration all the equipment needs)

i turned to him and asked him, if he truly believes that, would he recomend me, a guy with a masters in psych, to be his new supervisor…cuz shoot, edumacation dont mean squat

Watching these interviews is bad for the health. I was unable to get back to sleep at 5am this morning and my churning mind actually turned to Palin. Why???

Anyway, the results of my thinking is this: What comes across for me really strongly from the interviews is the twin themes of resentfulness and denial. The denial is obvious in everything she says – particularly denying any mistakes she might have made and even denying things that she has previously said. The resentfulness is clear in an unattractive “turn-down” in the corner of the mouth, which wasn’t there in the heady days of the first interviews.

OT, but that led my thoughts on to the whole Trig thing. I have always been a fan of the conspiracy theory, but now I wonder if resentfulness and denial were the hallmarks there too – which is really a sadder theory.

After all we know that she is relentlessly ambitious, so to fall pregnant just when her star was rising could have been a massive blow – hence the denial activity of keeping it hidden and the bizarre flying back in labour thing. And the resentfulness appears now in her apparent indifference to her child.

I did get back to sleep having sorted that out!

LOVE IT!!!! OMG, if he doesn’t get some tickets to you, he (or the secretary) should get a heart transplant – live heart to replace rock, and all that.

@Whale Island Mussels–

Yes, we should remember not to give over to a fear of Godzella herself–and you are right that we should keep havin’ fun..yet..

In all of this, there is something about our political process in this country right now that has shown itself to be rather scary. Andrew Sullivan has said it very well, and he said it very well indeed today. There are some screws loose in terms of things like national security if a know nothing nut ball can get this close to calling the shots on our security, etc. in this NUCLEAR AGE. I am Alaska born and “grown”, and it has been surreal to see all of this. (I’m as old as the state is) Thank God for all of the people who can see through all of the lies. What adds to the shiver factor of all of this is how so much of the media seems to play the game–it may be good for business–but who, in fact, is looking out for the good of the country, and thus the good of the world? One needs to pass tests to apply for jobs that handle our national security–I hope the Obama administration can come up with tests that people who run for higher office in this country need to pass before they even come up for election. In light of this Palin adventure, I think it should start with Governor, and then Congress, Vice-President and President. (one basic test could be that they not push racist agendas–and if their campaign gives any hint of hate mongering they should be disqualified) The nation should put together a commission to start this process. The media in Alaska (we found out wasn’t funded enough, and in one case owned by a lower 48 company), and much of the MSM has just not done their job on Palin.
This is the 21st century. Time to change the rules.

Since my eyes are bloodshot, and I need to get up “this morning”, I’m sayin’ nite for now…

13 11 2008
SC Sista M Cluckhead

Well, everyone’s probably gone from here now. I just want to say to Uncle Joe McCarthy that you DON’T need a Harvard education to run the country–I can think of people I know that I’d vote for who don’t even have a college degree!
But you do, unfortunately, need to have some kind of damn common sense, enough smarts to hire people to help (even if they are smarter than you)in the areas where you have weaknesses–I know SP believes she has NO weaknesses, because God is on her side (NOT!)–and here is the real killer: the ability to see more than one side of any kind of conflict, because resolving conflicts SUCCESSFULLY takes a lot more than just rolling over anybody that disagrees with you! I can do that (OK maybe not on the national level) and I’m certainly not Harvard educated.
That is the reason that she will not be a successful national player in the future.
I won’t say that I’m scared of her; I’m not. I think that all of those potential POTUS and VP candidates who were passed over, this go-round, will take care of her national ambitions just by showing up to oppose her. Competition can be a wonderful thing.
But you still can’t just ignore her–well, not so much her as her constituency. Even though a large %age of them ARE whack jobs, IMHO, they do get out and vote. And if it’s not her, it will be someone else. The need for education of these folks IS tremendous, but I don’t know if it will take. And if the Repubs can take advantage of their support (like they certainly did with Bush, twice) without alienating them, they can provide the votes needed to make the difference. Gotta keep watch…

It’s enough that she has a Down Syndrome baby, a pregnant teen who decided to keep her baby (and is now a symbol for all young pregnant teens out there) and a son in Eye-rak. That and all of her executive experience and all of her oil experience, she’s ready!

I agree, and I know some Harvard grads who would not make a good President. And don’t forget GWB is a Harvard Grad – but I am an Ivy League elitist and I think at least a good education goes a long way, but the person has to, like you say, have common sense, have the desire and curiosity to learn, ask questions, travel or at least try and understand what’s going on and read a lot. In reading Obama’s books, one sees that he learned so much from his community service, from his traveling, from his talking to people, asking questions. He thinks, he analyzes, he is also compassionate. Those are things that SP is not!

I am really tired here tonight.

Man, what can I say except that I think I have had enough. I do not want see, look at or hear her again. I think I am so tired because you have to double think or translate everything she says. What language does this woman speak ? Maybe that is her trick….talk and talk and talk until everyone runs away, falls asleep or just gives in and gives you what you want.

Personally I think the reason she is doing so many interviews is to bolster her image among the Repub Governors and heirarchy. She’s trying to boost her image….sort of like ‘see, look how important I am, even Larry King interviewed me’
She is applying for a job not with the electorate but with the guys at the top.

My thoughts…

Hey Brit – just looking at air france and costs – they give a choice of 3 airports : Goteborg, Stockholm STO and Stockholm Arlanda. Which is best?

Göteborg is out-of-city and needs a long expensive train to S’holm…. unless you want to see that city in which case try an ‘open-jaw’, although there must be options on the ‘cheap’ airlines… which I believe are serviced by ‘Stockholm STO’ which is to S’holm as Stanstead is to London IMHO [Brit – correct me if I have it reversed, please] . The main one is about 45 min by a rather expensive but very nice rail connection to Centrale station and a bus from there takes one easily to the doors [virtually] of Skeppsholmen lodging.

_______

This was a delightful thought provoking paragraph — hits on what I’ve been trying to understand and express about SP.

My mother’s parents were not well-educated, working class Pittsburgh area folks: granddad may have finished high school, granny not. Never owned their own house, never owned a car (neither learned to drive – gramps claimed he got into enough trouble with horse and buggy, didn’t need the extra help!). Their only child (my mother) grew up to be a PhD chemist.

She has Altheimer’s now, but I am blessed to remember some very special conversations from the past. Once, discussing education, she insisted that her college education taught her many things, but the two most important were that she learned how little she knew (ie, awareness of all that is out there, and also how to learn about it), and perhaps more important, she gained the knowledge that everyone else is in the same boat. There was nothing “magical” about a college education — it was whatever you made it, and nobody was superior to her because they had it and she didn’t.

The uncomfortable feeling I get about SP, is that she has no awareness of her own ignorance. I don’t think she’s fundamentally stupid, all that lack of grammar aside. But she’s like someone who is totally blind, and won’t even begin to think that vision exists. Somehow this is combined with some strange confidence that allows her not to worry that maybe she is missing something.

Perhaps this is the lack of common sense you refer to?

I too read Obama’s books (actually, listened to recordings of him reading them – now THAT’s a treat!), and was blown away.

Sorry for the length of post. Can’t claim inebriation at 8 am.

Disclaimer: I too am an Ivy League elitist. So there, pthhhht.

Palin to give views on the future of the GOP

“Gov. Haley Barbour told his peers that now isn’t the time to think about the next presidential election.

“Anybody here tonight that has thought about the 2012 presidential election needs to keep their eye on the ball,” Barbour, a former Republican Party chairman, told a reception for the governors and their supporters. “We don’t need to talk about 2012.”

Instead, he said the future of the Republican Party is with its governors since the GOP has lost power in Congress and the White House. With 38 governors’ seats up for election in the next two years, that’s what the party has to focus on, he said.

“That’s how you get your party back going. And if you think this is practice time for people running for president in 2012, they need to get back in line. The next two years are the years that matter,” Barbour said.”

Sarah Palin to appear on Desperate Housewives

New York (ANI): ‘Desperate Housewives’ creators are reportedly keen to offer Alaska governor Sarah Palin a part in the show. Hollywood pr man Hal Lifson, who’s not involved with the show, said series creator Marc Cherry is ‘very hot to trot to have her appear on the season-five finale.’

“Marc is highly enamoured of Sarah and sees her as the ultimate guest star [playing] a similar version of herself,” the New York Post quoted Lifson, as saying. “The idea has gone over surprisingly well with execs at Disney, who see it as a blockbuster based on Sarah’s huge ratings on ‘Saturday Night Live,” Lifson added.

okay, two things. I just read another stupid article about Godsilla in which the reporter said she came off as “endearingly combative” in the Today interview. What is wrong with these people? Do they not actually listen to her?
Second, I forgot about her saying she was going to call Hillary today until somebody here mentioned it. I’m sure somebody told Hillary about the comment if she didn’t see it herself, and she and Bill have probably been laughing and telling palin jokes since yesterday.
That woman is so cheeky it is almost obscene. Her world view is right for the nation. She has parenting info to pass on to the Obamas. She wants to contribute her expertise to the new administration. She wants to call Hillary and bond.
Can some tv show today PLEASE just run split screen all day with sarah’s comments about whining Hillary on one side and HER endless whining in interviews on the other side?

“That’s how you get your party back going. And if you think this is practice time for people running for president in 2012, they need to get back in line. The next two years are the years that matter,” Barbour said.

Wow, my social skills aren’t the best, but that sure sounds like a hint to me.

Let her keep dancing with the camera. Let her dig herself in deeper. The party she imagines she owns will leave her in the cold.

I just wish, and know there’s little use wishing, she’d speak to her base and take back the uglier things she said, now kids are chanting ugly things on school buses: http://www.2news.tv/news/local/34274374.html

This piece would make me feel better if I thought it was true. I think the reports of the demise of the GOP are somewhat premature. It’s too simplistic to simply write the Repugs off as ignorant hicks. Living in the red, red Midwest I see many intelligent, normal people who vote Repub almost as a reflex reaction. If the party leadership veers to the far right I think they are in big trouble. But I just think they will realize the danger of that policy and find a way to reconnect with the ‘real’ base of the party – the moderate conservative, middle-class.

I think there is an equal danger that the Dems will see this as a mandate to swerve to the left and they will leave behind the centrist voters that went with Obama because he campaigned as a center-leaning liberal.

Remember, even though Obama won lots of EC votes, the popular vote was still relatively close. If we were looking at a 65-35 vote it would be one thing. But how many voters would really have to shift sides to swing the other way? 2-3% ???

Palin has reached her sell-by date

[But] seduced by big crowds, some pundits ignored the national surveys and waxed rhapsodic about Palin’s “middle-class magnetism.” They forgot that rallies are not representative of the general public. Barry Goldwater, George McGovern, and Walter Mondale attracted passionately cheering throngs – and none of them cracked 42 percent of the vote.

According to CBS News polling, Palin never earned a majority favorable rating. From the Republican convention to Election Day – as more people got to know her – Palin’s favorable number dropped seven points, her unfavorable rating almost doubled, and her positive number finished no higher than her negative number. (By contrast, Barack Obama’s favorable rating surpassed his unfavorable rating by 15 points; Joe Biden’s positive-to-negative gap exceeded 20 points.)

By the end of the campaign, about one in seven Obama supporters had once backed John McCain. The biggest reason these mostly middle class voters switched sides? The presence of Mrs. Middle-Class Magnetism on the Republican ticket.

Hello – this is my first post. The Palin media blitz has driven me batty. On Larry King last night she made a couple of statements that hopefully will be be explored during the press conference today. She stated that she was open to having her associations questioned just as she has been questioning Obama’s association with Ayers. And, she actually brought up the Baby Trigg rumors, saying it needed to be clarified by the media. Is it too much to ask these journalist to take this opening?

Dick Morris is a born-again believer and since his rebirth has jumped ship from the Clinton Dem’s, and has yet to find a place in steering a Republican into prominence.

OK, I watched Barbie last night on LK and she says the same things over and over again. Not one of these interviewers will grow a set and ask her REAL questions. She whines about the media, blogs, etc (Remember, HER 1st amendment rights being violated as a candidate) yet no one asks her why she thought it ok to Lie about BO?
I think its time we tell, news, tv, anyone we are sick of barbie and only want to see her in handcuffs being led away. Since she is bringing up issues of Trig, and other stuff…investigative reporters Have at it!!!
I Loved AKM article! I have felt the same way, a “friend” recently called my house and when we didn’t answer left a message, “oh your probably out partying since Obama won, but I heard a rumor he was going to tear down the statue of liberty and put a statue of aunt jemina there with a chicken leg…” and I haven’t talked to this idiot for months ever since he told me he didn’t want to hear the “nonsense” about Barbie! Well my DH called him back and told him, yeah we didn’t answer, I lost my Dad last fri. and he just felt like one big idiot. He is just like AKM described backwoods uneducated redneck.

Morning Mudpuppies

I have been catching up on the comments and AKM’s posts from yesterday. Oh I am hoping that Begich retains his lead!

I have asked myself this question for a few years because of various people I have worked with and for, SP has me asking it again.

If you are stupid do you know you are stupid? Or do you consider yourself the intellectual one and everyone else is stupid? Are they capable of self awareness?

My mind goes round and round on this. In SP’s case I think she considers herself the intellectual and the rest of us the stupid ones. No self awareness at all. Many of these people consider themselves in charge and confident and just don’t get it. Maybe I am the one who just does not get it.

I personally don’t consider myself stupid but I realize I am just a person with average intelligence, but I do think I have a curiosity about the world around me and I do take the time to read and look at other view points. Ok maybe I am just fooling myself. Naw I really think she is stupid and vain and has an ego the size of Alaska and I think I could take her in a debate.

While I agree to a point with the article AKM has referenced I do want to say that many of us have a High School education and never graduated from college but do take the time to educate ourselves, especially since the intertube was invented.

I hope SP drops off the media blitz after this week is over. She has been infiltrating my favorite shows. KO and Rachel and I found myself changing channels because I could not take it anymore.

From the Morris article:

“But voters under 30 years of age were still the same 11 percent of the vote that they were in 2004. The surge of young voters, which was supposed to animate Obama’s rise, failed to happen.”

From what I have read, Morris is wrong on the issue of young voters. True young voters did not turn out in the number predicted, but the percentage of young voters who actually cast a ballot was 50% – far higher than the 35% seen in the previous high in 1996. They were 18% of the electorate vs. 17% in 2004.

I’ve always found this to be a very interesting question. In my profession, it translates into, if you’re not talented do you know you’re not talented. It seems that, if you are surrounded by other stupid/nontalented people and you are the best of the bunch, the answer is no–you think you’re brilliant. Once that is established in your brain, there is no reason to look outside your group and notice what is being done elsewhere. Perhaps, even if you look you can’t see.

‘Drill, baby, drill’ not enough, Pawlenty tells GOP

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty told the Republican Governors Association luncheon Wednesday in Miami that getting party faithful to chant on drilling would not be enough to bring voters back to the GOP.

“Drill, baby, drill, by itself, is not an energy policy,” said Pawlenty, who was thought to be on John McCain’s short list for vice presidential nominees. “It’s helpful. We need that, but we need a lot more than that. We’re going to need it all,” he added, referring to wind, solar and other alternative energy.

If applause is an indication, it was perhaps the best received part of Pawlenty’s remarks among the crowd, still hurting from last week’s Election Day loss.

Cynthia, sorry, i must disagree. She’s not ready? No, she’s not intelligent enough to EVER even think she’d be qualified. Saying she’s not ready implies she could be over time. That’s simply not going to ever happen.

She’s adequate giving speeches. Written, vetted content that’s been practiced. But once she has to think on her own, she’s worthless, and one needs to be intelligent and actually have the ability to think while standing and have an analyitical mind, which she doesn’t.

So, while you’re right in a way, i tend to doubt not ready is correct.. Try Never will be ready.. you’ll find a lot more accuracy..!🙂

Bob.. you could be right, but when she has time to craft a speech over days or weeks, she can put a few lines together and edit the circular speech out of it. I’m not sure how many people were going to write about Joe The Plumber and Tina the hooker.. I don’t know how many were going to talk about drilling to secure our energy security. I don’t know how many would mention Drew the Down baby. It just reeks of Barbieisms, without the circular comments. But she can write, she just can’t speak off the cuff. I’d think someone probably helped edit it, but my bet is most of it was her own comments.

@Forty Watt:
if you are surrounded by other stupid/nontalented people and you are the best of the bunch, the answer is no–you think you’re brilliant.

Well, this explains her firing all the “haters” and replacing them with unqualified high school chums…

Don’t know if the question was answered, but I read somewhere that Hef backed out of his original offer.

No more than polite applause for Sarah during her Gov Conference speech. She sure isn’t energizing this base. They probably are all sitting there saying – if only McCain had picked me! Get the hook.

Her speech goes from cliche to cliche. She even had to bring up Joe the Plumber again.

I think all those interviews with her cookin’ in the kitchin’ — that just might be a good place for her. A Fox cooking show??? For hunters.

At yesterdays RGC event said by Tim Pawlenty-I would bet he’ll be running against her in 2012

“‘Drill baby, drill’ by itself is not an energy policy,” he said. “It’s not enough. We’re going to need wind and solar and bio mass.”

That got a round of applause.

Ok, just watched her speech.

I have to say she (even by her standards) was a bit off today- though the syntax wasn’t the usual word salad, her delivery just wasn’t what it was even at the convention.

It almost was embarrassing. It called to mind a sort of precocious dressed up daughter coming down to recite something in the parlor- home from junior college girl displays speaking skills in front of adults……The problem is that it really did appear that her peers are merely tolerating her presence. I really can’t recall any previous governor’s meetings being televised, and it certainly didn’t make them look very organized.

There were also mixed messages. At first she harped on things she harped on during the campaign, then she tried to sound more conciliatory but passive aggressive at the same time. (if those Pelosi/Frank types want to just hand out health care, yada yada).

It just won’t work for much longer. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that she’ll get some harsher words on this speech from the msm than we’ve seen yet.

Turn their asses in. Let God save them and let their racists asses get slammed in jail. People like that are pathetic. Sorry if I am being rude, but they sound just like SP. If they had dirt on you and it would help them, they would try to use it against you.

I LOVE the story about the daughter who pretended to call SP and invite her over to upset her mom. It would have worked on me! My kid would have a nice talking too…..and I mean a NICE one not a rude or negative one. Honey, we do not play with the devil, even if we are trying to make daddy upset. It worked honey and that was very smart of you, but that is too far…..i love you honey, but no more SP. OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT!

FINALLY – I think Larry King is a total pussy after watching him interview Sarah Palin. I think EVERYONE who interviews her lately are complete wimps. They ask the same questions to get the same rehearsed speech and kiss her ass. Let the bitch get some real questions or let her fade into the backwoods of Alaska where she can pray and eat shit. Larry King is now an old loser to me who has no spine.

It was hilarious to see SP swallow hard and get that nervous look on her face when she could not think of her memorized speech for an answer to a question.

G’Morning fellow muddies,

Not much time to join today but cheez on a cracker, SOMEONE. get. her. off. the interview circuit for godssake! And I can’t believe also that these newspeeps are all falling for the *exclusive* angle! And holding a press conference?? Are you kiddin’ me???? Her Rethug buddies are ignoring her and (except for that *belt* of red) everyone else is trying to forget her. GO. AWAY. SARAH! Can’t count?? Fifteen minutes is one quarter of an hour! DUNZO! Oh my achin’ head!

The rest of the Palin family stayed behind I’m sure because poor Piper had a major meltdown with the piled homework. And Todd and Trig are in another corner, rockin’ back and forth also. Someone needs to reach out to save this family!

And I just had to add, did anyone think that Greta was being more than polite while she played with her moose chili and occasionally forced a mouthful down? lol

Thanks for the rant. On a happier note, GO BEGICH!!

Husky, I agree.. She looked uncomfortable.. When she was expectng applause, she got very little, and she looked funny, as if ‘why the hell aren’t you all clapping wildly, like at my campaign stops?

She blinks a lot when she’s unsure what to do, last night during Larry, in one 30 second blip, she blinked 27 times according to my count, and i may have missed a few when i had to blink myself..

She has that glue on smile that says, reminds of Seinfeld when he’s with the girlfriend he wants to dump but can’t. Just off and not feeling the love.

Of course, it means she may finally have reached the end of her 15 minutes and she’s about ready to watch her world turn back into pumpkins and dead moose skeletons.

13 11 2008

She definitely didn’t write that speech, but she certainly kept her head down a lot reading it. Usually a self-written speech tends to flow better because the speaker has already handled the lines in his/her head while creating them.

I was bouncing around the dial last night, mostly trying to avoid her, but I did see some of Wolf’s “exclusive” interview. This morning David Schusteer commented on her embarassing lack of understanding of the bail out when talking to Wolf. I didn’t see – or at least hear – that part of it. But it does show they are closely examining what she is saying.

I can’t believe Republicans trying to save their party would ever want as their comeback kid this woman, who shows herself to be no deeper than that hockey mom she brags about being.

I think MSM are giving her the rope and she is using it. After Begich wins and no more talk of her getting the senate seat, Palin will be hybernating for a long time. She can crawl under that big bear skin in her office.

She will continue to have her little fringe following – the misfits that cling to her far right wingNUT point of view – the faction that will be purged from the Repug party as they only represent the narrow mindedness she represents.

She’s the only one really listening to her weak and pathetic voice…please wonderful mudpups…don’t feed the beast!!

I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner. SP isn’t out there promoting herself and basking in her self imagined glory. She’s taking one for the team.

She’s diverting American attention from where it strangely has been absent lately- the incumbent president. Rightly, given the state of our economy and our nation, we ought to be outraged (more than we are at least as reflected in the media) at BushCheneyRoveRumsfeld and the crimes they’ve showered on us.

Our nation is a mess, and while we have hope in the form of Barack Obama, we really haven’t EXPRESSED our outrage beyond kicking the bastards out of Washington.

SP is clearly (as hard as it is to imagine) more stupid, more vapid, and more self obsessed than W. She makes him seem like a sad, tragic figure, and I think that though we don’t want to acknowledge it, we’re starting to view him with pity rather than with outrage- like we would with a wayward child.

She’s taking the heat off of him, and that was the evil plan all along…..because really, she couldn’t be THAT NARCISSISTIC…..not to have a “greater good” mentality right now….could she?

But now that she is no longer under the watchful eyes of McCain campaign officials, the Alaska governor is talking, and talking and talking.

“I am not one to appoint myself or a member of my family to take the place of any vacancy.”

Her supporters, many of them social conservatives, were ecstatic about having her on the ticket.

Comments are even better –

If she had a publicist that was any good, they’d warn her to limit her exposure a bit and forego these small change events and hold out for the real money in book deals, movie offers, and her own sydication deal.”

From the Dallas Star News.. 9:05 am

In Miami at the Republican Governor’s Association, Sarah Palin held her first national press conference. About 100 reporters gathered. The bank of TV camera were two-deep on the risers. And — drumroll please — it lasted three questions and about seven and a half minutes.
Palin when asked what message and motivation she might have for the press conference, as well as interviews in the past two days to Matt Lauer of the Today Show as well as Fox’s Greta Van Susteren and CNN’s Wolf Blitzer and Larry King, she intimated that she would have liked more freedom during the presidential campaign. “I don’t want to talk about the strategy of a campaign that is over,” Palin said.
She said she stood with the other red state governors because she thinks states will offer the solutions of balanced budgets, nonpartisanship and the ideas that will lead the GOP out of the wilderness.

If Sarah’s speech were art, it might be described as Impressionism meets Abstraction. The listener recognizes something in what Twinkie says, for a second it resembles a concrete idea, then the very next phrase inserts a mismatch dissonant with the idea under constuction. But Twinkie is still carrying on as if there was no change intended.

Mind you, I’m always a bit afraid this way of functioning is so widespread it might apply to me also. By my own argument, how would I know
______________________________________________________________________

Your last line is where I end up too. Round and round. LOL I guess the only way we would know is if a trusted friend or family member said hey dumbshit you are just average, but would we accept that or would our mind go to huh? I really need to get new friends and really who believes their family?🙂

I want to thank all of the courageous bloggers who can watch and analyze SP. You have a much stronger stomach than I do! This from someone who raised 5 kids and a gaggle of dogs over the years. Thought I could stomach any crappy mess that came along, but SP sends me racing to the bathroom everytime I hear her speak!

Off to do chores. Look forward to catching up later.

I still can’t believe that she got a degree in jouralism. Do you suppose she did one of those on-line things? Listening to her speak at the Gov. conv in Miami, I didn’t hear a lot of applause. About the time she brought up skin-head –Joe the Plumber, I just about lost it. –Yesterday with Wolf Blitzer–she was saying how Barrack and Michelle should handle their children in the White House. This just blew my mind. She just doesn’t get it. It’s school baby–school!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if Congress can change the qualifications for President? Not too soon, but before the next election… Add minimum college degrees in fields of law, international studies, social work, economics and/or education. And minimum years of public service on a local level. It would protect us from Joe the Plumbers and Caribou Barbies from running for the top job.

Polly, i’d think that would require Constitutional changes, so that won’t happen.. But remember, the idiots generally don’t win on the National Stage. There’s no accounting how she won in Alaska, but maybe the frigid air keeps brains running very slowly..?

But while we can debate and blog, she’s got about as much chance to become president as my puppy.

And in 2012, remember, she may likely be in a contest with the best the GOP can find, Tim Palenty and Mit Romney to name a few. She’d never survive a debate with intelligent people, and unlike this election when she was shielded and hidden, she won’t be able to hide and you can guarantee as presidential candidate palin, there won’t be any kid gloves this time.

And even if she won the GOP nomination, she’d have to face perhaps the best, most popular president in recent history. How would a dimwit like her fare against Obama 2012? He palled around with unrepentant Terrorist Bill Ayers and 56 members of the US Senate?

She’d have zero, absolutely zero chance of winning the Presidency, and even the nomination. Who’d imagine her against Obama? 400 EV would be easy, and perhaps 500? Obama might even win Wyoming and Alabama.!

Ok.. have to share.. My wife is a non-blogger.. She kind of glazes over if i mention mudflats or barbie..

but she has a huge network of joke senders.. here’s one that’ll make ya laugh..

The family wheeled Grandma out on the lawn, in her wheelchair, where the activities for her 100th birthday were taking place. Grandma couldn’t speak very well, but she could write notes when she needed to communicate.

After a short time out on the lawn, Grandma started leaning off to the right, so some family members grabbed her, straightened her up, and stuffed pillows on her right. A short time later, she started leaning off to her left, so again the family grabbed her and stuffed pillows on her left.

Soon she started leaning forward, so the family members again grabbed her, and then tied a pillowcase around her waist to hold her up.

A nephew who arrived late came up to Grandma and said, ‘Hi, Grandma, you’re looking good! How are they treating you?’

Grandma took out her little notepad and slowly wrote a note to the nephew………’Bastards won’t let me fart.’

I’ve been wondering if Caribou Barbie’s in-laws resent the way she’s turned their family name into an international punchline? I actually DON”T feel better.

I do understand that this article talks about the fact that the only group “who voted for McCain/Palin in BIGGER numbers than they even voted for Bush/Cheney –only one shrinking group: uneducated white folks in the deep south and a few folks in Appalachia.”

But the fact is that the popular vote for McCain/Palin was 46.2; this means that there are a lot of old republicans out there who always have, and always will vote republican–no matter how absurd their candidates have become.

or maybe we can’t trust the statistics (of fivethirtyeight.com) as there are still widespread shenanigans occurring with the voting machines, voter suppression, and stealing elections through fraud?

Either way. I still don’t feel so good.

The bad thing for McCain is HE CHOSE PALIN FOR VP. His judgement is forever questioned. Either he thought Palin was ready to be VP/President or he thought Palin would win him votes—or win first thinking rather than country first. Either way, McCain is exposed in poor light. That is why McCain keeps defending Palin. And silently prays Palin will just go sleep with the Polar bears.

Does she know her own limitations? It doesn’t seem so. As a teacher I see both kinds. Some kids know they are not that bright and realize they have limitations. Others (like Sarah) are psychologically not disposed to be honest enough with themselves to see how smart they are not. She has an overabundance of confidence without the skills to back it up.

We see this in education survey data. When compared with students around the world, US students often SEE THEMSELVES as at the top, when their performance is much less than stellar. Our parents and educational system have spent so much time building false self-esteem but the actual skills lag the self image. I think Sarah shows this is spades.

I see this also in her attitude toward her college education. The attitude that “I went to 5 schools in 4 years and have a college degree so I’m as good as any other graduate”. She has absolutely no idea what real intellectual vigor would look like.

Look at Al Franken, a comedian running and still close enough to potentially win..

My attitude has always been, give anyone who wants to run a chance and let them prove themselves qualified. I certainly don’t know how smart Kilmer is, but you gotta figure he’s already more qualified than Barbie..

JWA, i think you have some valid points about barbie, but i think her own personal evaluation is far superior to her own ability. She probably thinks when she gives a speech and people cheer their approval that she’s really some hot stuff and is just sent by God to be wonderful.

She can’t see her own inadequacies herself, and will convince herself she’s never to blame. Yet, when she speaks in random thoughts, she can’t grasp the question, and uses words to try to fake us out.

As a teacher, I’m sure you’ve seen those same traits in school when the prepared students give a clear (depending on age of course) report based on the subject, yet the unprepared, or less able students will talk fluff trying to avoid not saying anything and hoping the teacher doesn’t notice they didn’t prepare.

This is Barbie, the professional unprepared. She’s probably done this her whole life and the circular reasoning is her way to cope with her inability to actually answer stuff she has no clue about. So she talks and talks and hopes no one notices, but as in school when she got a D, or an F, it was the beginning of her education on how to avoid gaining knowledge to answer. Somehow, she decided it was just as good to simply make the answer up.

So, who’s to blame? Did her teachers let her get away with it? Or was her supposed 2.2 GPA a reflection on her lack of knowledge?

13 11 2008

@Marty,

You could be right. We’ve just put up with so much silliness as well as corruption here that maybe, just maybe someone who would not be swayed by big bucks and would have the State’s best interests in mind would be a breath of fresh air.

Then again…here’s his quote (sort of….also): “There’s sort of a rumor around that maybe I’m thinking of running to be Governor of New Mexico? Well, it’s sort of true. I really love my state. Poor, hardworking, decent people – Native Americans, carpenters, artists, expats mixed in with hundreds of the world’s smartest physicists at Los Alamos. I’ve always thought of myself as functioning as a candidate for them”.

goalie- I actually know a lot about Val Kilmer. Before he became famous he lived right up the street from me in Chatsworth, CA and was in my sister’s high school class. He left before senior year to go to NYC and the rest is history. But I will never forget the day his younger brother died from an epileptic seizure in the family jacuzzi. Really tragic indeed. Oh and a small bit of trivia…..the house he grew up in was Roy Roger and Dale Evans former home before they moved to Diamond Bar. The streets in our little neighborhood have names like Trigger Place, Dale Court, Cactus Gulch (no cactus though) etc. My mom still lives there. His father was a Real Estate developer and was cool about letting us kids ride our horses on their back property. I admit I had a mad crush on him too. Not sure where his political leanings are now though.

Goalie well, you summed it up. He’s rich enough to not need financial help to be swayed. And it seems he has some love for his home state, so who knows?

If he’s really a full-time resident of NM and not simply a transplant to run for office in an ‘easy’ state, I’d give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves if he’s qualified or not. I kinda liked your paraphrased quote.

Actors aren’t always the most brilliant (Jack Black anyone) but then others are quite amazing (Paul Newman? ) who could inspire people.

If you’re worried, see if he has a contact point and write him and ask.. Tell him you’ve been addicted to a blog about a woefully uneducated and unqualified Barbie Grifter and wonder what makes him think he’d be qualified to run for public office. My bet is if he’s serious, he’d write you and give you some insight into his own view of his ability..!

And what a waste of tv time and space – she said exactly the same thing on each interview (no matter what the questions were), just a lot of nonsense, flightly meaningless platitudes and a lot of condescending nods, advice and shout outs to people who are way smarter, classier and more experienced than her. Think of her giving advice to Barack Obama – or Michelle for that matter! I really don’t think that she gave one single straight answer to anything. @mvgnfwd,

That’s interesting! Thanks for sharing. It’s always enlightening to hear from someone in the know.

I don’t mean to bash the poor man before he truly makes a bid. NM kind of flies below the radar and we like that here. We are a very poor state (avg. income around 25K) – and sparsely populated. More than 50% of high school students drop out. We have about 2.5 million in population and we are ethnically rich, with diverse and ancient cultures meeting here. We are home to the oldest established community outside of VA. The oldest church in the country is in Santa Fe – and our rich history is mottled with brutal, dispicable acts upon our Native people. White folks are the minority in New Mexico.

We are also one of the most beautiful places on Earth….IMHO!

I’m realize that I am being selfish when I say that I just don’t want Mr. Kilmer to put us on the map the way that SP did to Alaska.

Alaska Const. Article 11 – Initiative, Referendum, and Recall

All elected public officials in the State, except judicial officers, are subject to recall by the voters of the State or political subdivision from which elected. Procedures and grounds for recall shall be prescribed by the legislature.

I’m not sure what anyone did to you to make you so spiteful and negative. Was I the last to see the Wassup 2008 Video? It would be even funnier if some of it wasn’t so true.

I think Sarah Palin has a great chance to run for president in 2012. There are also some other players she’ll have to get past in the primaries. This site shows the GOP hopefuls at http://www.sarahpalinrockon.com
