Election Eve in Alaska. Again. Sort of.

11 11 2008

Alaska’s election is not over. There is no rest for the weary. The giant bottle of Tums still sits just to the right of my keyboard.

But, tomorrow, a chunk of the 91,000 outstanding ballots in Alaska will be counted.

For days, the count has been frozen. Sen. Ted Stevens leads Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich by about 3,000 votes with roughly 30 percent of the ballots remaining to be counted, including:

• 61,000 absentee votes.

• More than 20,000 questioned ballots.

• 9,500 early votes.

Of those, at least two-thirds of the absentee votes and nearly all the early votes are expected to be counted Wednesday, said Division Director Gail Fenumiai.

Election workers began poring over questioned ballots Monday in Anchorage, a process that will likely continue through the final count, which is expected Nov. 19.

Meantime, absentee votes are still arriving in the mail and precincts are sending in more questioned ballots.

Here are the squeakers:

With a little more than 90,000 ballots left to count:

U.S. SENATE: Sen. Ted Stevens (R) leads Mayor Mark Begich (D) by about 3,257 votes.

STATE HOUSE (District 19): Pete Petersen (D) leads Rep. Bob Roses (R) by 136 votes.

STATE HOUSE (district 27): Rep. Bob Buch (D) leads Bob Lewis (R) by 67 votes.

<!–[if !supportEmptyParas]–><!–[endif]–> Bev Harris, election guru from Black Box Voting was on KUDO today, urging Alaskans and all Americans not  to “get complacent.According to Harris, when numbers don’t’ add up, when books don’t reconcile, we need to act. She points out the dangerous mindset of only caring about election issues when it appears as though the outcome of the race will be affected.  Regardless of the closeness of the race, or whether our candidate is ahead, we need to challenge these anomalies on principle.  Every vote should count, and be counted properly regardless of the other votes surrounding it.   And just because the leadership changes, don’t assume the problems get fixed.

So, what about Alaska?  Harris was circumspect, but indicated that there were several red flags, and things which would need closer scrutiny….after the final numbers are in.  The thing that concerns her most of all is the fact that all Alaska votes are counted on a central tabulator in Anchorage.

This particular system, explains Harris, has “a number that you never see, an internal number that identifies which candidate is which. As absentee votes come in, and are counted, this number can be manually flipped back and forth by the individual operating the machine. Harris characterizes this type of system as “reeeally dangerous” because there are no checks & balances.

The fact that Bev Harris calls our system “really dangerous” is enough to make me think I may not sleep well tonight.

In addition, when an Anchorage voter votes in the polling place, there’s a tape at the end of the day that is associated with each particular voting machine.  With absentee voting there is no voting machine tape. Totals can literally be adjusted as they come in. A manual entry screen allows anyone with access to the machine to type over the old totals and make new ones. Scary, but true.

So, what do Alaskans need to do?  Harris has counseled an engaged group in Alaska to get audit logs, and copy information from the database as often as possible during the counting process.  Why?  Because it is our right to do so, and because we KNOW that they were tampered with in Alaska in 2004.  We just don’t know who did it.  There are eyeballs in the right places this year, but vigilance by all citizens is critical.

There is much we don’t know.  But we DO know that Bev Harris and Black Box Voting is paying close attention to our results.  And while she has said that  in Alaska “there are some very interesting issues to be looked at”, she’s playing her cards close to her chest until the numbers are all in.  More than half the uncounted ballots will be tallied tomorrow, and the final numbers are due in on November 19th, one week later.

We wait and watch.

I wrote to the e-mail addresses listed a couple of days ago to volunteer to help with the count but got no response. Maybe all the counting is going on in Anchorage and none in Juneau? This is scary stuff indeed.

Last I heard, they were fully staffed. So, that’s good news. Maybe it happened quickly. 🙂 AKM

So… who are the people who enter the numbers into that machine in Anchorage?

Debbie aka Commando Coalfire Palin

It seems if they have a system to audit they should use it. This is perhaps the chance to catch these guys with their pants around their knees. If some of them finally get caught and it is given media attention it will put more people on alert. Voter fraud in one form or another has been going on forever. I just watched a special on PBS where talking about Lyndon Johnson loosing his first try at the senate because he didn’t know he had to buy off certain counties in Texas to win. But it needs to have a bright light shined on it. Alaska has the best oppotunity to get to the bottom of it because your population is smaller and the task of auditing everything much less than say Florida.

Debbie – I taped the PBS Johnson show but it is buried somewhere in about 30 unlabelled tapes from the election. It will be a surprise.

Did anyone see the companion special on Nixon where he later admitted he didn’t really believe Voorhees or Gahagan Douglas were Communists but winning was everything.

Maybe Greta will ask Sarah if she really believes Obama has terrorist sympathies or was winning everything?

OMG – she thought McCain would be the perfect running mate!
He will be very flattered.

And I did not (yet) peruse the other threads for today (too much work)- so let me add here, that I send my respect, regards and profound admiration to all Vets on this memorable day. 11th hour, 11th day, of the 11th month- the war to end all wars ended.. oh, if only…

Thanks AKM!!

It just occurred to me to call my attorney friend whose idea of a vacation is to go to eastern European countries to observe elections–wondered if she would be involved in the recount process. Turns out, she is on the list to be an observer here in Juneau but they are not sure they need her. So apparently they are covered. She said she’d give her contact my number if it turns out they do need more.

She also told me this: She went to Ohio for Election Day! She joined 3400 other attorneys to observe the election there. About half of them, like her, were from elsewhere and paid their own expenses to do it. She said that they also put 5400 attorneys in Florida for the same purpose! So I suspect that all those highly trained observers were one reason Obama took those states!

I read AKM’s summary of Bev Harris’s descriptions of our voting machines to my friend over the phone. She didn’t know about the design flaws in the system for counting the absentee and early votes. (Apparently the machines used on election day are OK.) She was none too pleased.

Good to know that sharp minds are on the case.

I just had a thought – off topic, of course, as always – about one of the comments in a previous thread mentioning again that the school in Idaho, where Palin finally managed to get her degree, honored her with some distinguished something-or-other award. Now, considering how bare of knowledge her brain is and how sunnily she proves it with every sentence, you’d think that any school that’s ever tried to teach her anything and failed so miserably would hide quietly in the shadows. And yet, the one school who gave her that degree is also the one who “honors” her for her achievements? Huh? I’d like to know if they possibly at some point in the past got a nice donation from someone connected to Palin. It’d probably have to be a pretty substantial donation, all things considered. Unless the school is otherwise influenced by Palin-backers and/or family, perhaps?

AKM — I may have missed this, but is there really evidence of vote tampering in the 2004 election? The 100%+ voter turnout numbers Shannyn flagged were, I’m certain, a misinterpretation. From looking at the spreadsheet, it’s pretty obvious there was a two-card ballot, and the “Turnout %” was really number-of-cards-per-voter; that is, the real turnout of whole voters would be 1/2 the figure given, or 50-60%.

Yes. There is concrete evidence that the central tabulator file was tampered with. They just don’t know who did it because it registered as “administrator” and anyone with access could have done it. Bev Harris also mentioned this today. Sad but true. AKM

How many people live in Alaska? How is it possible to have 90 thousand uncounted ballots a week after the election?

Alaska accepts ballots as long as they are postmarked by midnight on election day. Then they have 10 days to arrive in state. So they will be coming in until Nov. 14th. AKM

Wonkette on Rachel Maddow’s show raised the possibility of an ‘Alien vs. Predator Smackdown’ between Romney and Palin for all the Republican marbles.
Mudflatters should cease to recoil in disgust at Palin…and start to look at the bright side of life.
What could be more delicious than a brutal knife fight between the mormon game show host and the killa from wasilla? Mormons vs. Frreecs, at the same time that the Republicans are going on and on about being more inclusive.

So cheer up, it should be really fun. No seriously.

Off topic and may have been discussed earlier but…

Who else saw the heels on Piper and who else heard the comments from Mommy when Matt Lauer was talking to Piper?

I have only seen clips but-
What was with the HIGH HEELS Piper had on in the kitchen. Ridiculous outfit for a young child- An “I heart NY” t shirt, stylish dark bootleg jeans, and REALLY high heels…and these were not princess slippers! Were they Mommy’s shoes and I missed the joke on that?

Worse, the conversation between Piper, Matt and Mommy made my heart sick. Sweet child was saying that the hard part of the campaign was the rallies. Mom prods Piper to tell what was so bad about the rallies (SP says- All the waving and saying “Vote for my mom”?) and turns out Piper did not like the long speeches her mom gave. SP tried to jest about it but it was clear she was critical and sarcastic as she joked. She said something along the lines of “Oh yeah, that was SO hard watching Mommy give all those speeches.”

SP was so defensive about the school Piper missed and jumped right into the “life lessons” and the things the kids will never forget. So did they withdraw the children and home school them while on the trail or just decide the rules do not apply to them, as usual? There are rules and laws about school attendance…even for children of Mrs. Palin, her Highness.

Ira2:

The college that is giving SP an award is not the college from which she ultimately (finally) got her diploma. The college giving her an award is North Idaho College.

From Slate.com: “Next stop: North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene. (Palin was born in Idaho.) Here, Johnson writes, they “immersed themselves in a more traditional college life” and lived in a coed dorm. According to Ketchum, Palin, who enrolled as a general studies major, remained interested primarily in sports, but Palin spent a semester working in a TV production studio. This past June, North Idaho College’s Alumni Association named Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin a distinguished alumna and invited her to give the commencement address in 2009. But Palin attended the school for only one year—a spokeswoman for the college told the Associated Press, “We were not able to track down club affiliations or anything”—before departing. ”

The Slate article is the first I’ve found that details her college wanderings – interesting stuff.

Hey, all. It’s ridiculous that in this day and age, we have such a haphazard voting system. Come on! We are pushing democracy all around the world, and we can’t even ensure it in our own damn country? Sheesh.

I haven’t seen Rachel’s show yet today, but I can’t wait to see Shannyn Moore. I admire how much work she (Shannyn) has put into reporting on all things Alaskan politics.

Now that the election is over, my appetite for all things Palin has plummeted. I really think she loves playing the martyr, and I, for one, am sick of it.

I took the day off from all things political yesterday because I had reached critical mass. Now what do we do?

Good? It’s extremely sad that in the United States of America, in 2008, 6,800 attorneys were deemed necessary to monitor the voting process in just two states.

In Canada, Australia, Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, New Zealand, etc., do you know how many lawyers it takes to monitor our voting processes? None: nary a one.

It took a mere 80 insurgents and Fidel Castro to overthrow Cuba’s army and its dictator, Batista, and thus liberate the country and its people.

Greetings, mudpuppies, from the Cornhusker state. I am helping my stepmom, who has cancer; she resides in a small blue dot in a sea of red- the first time the Second Congressional District went Democratic since 1964 (lol) One of her dear friends is a mudpuppy, although she hasn’t discovered Mudflats; we high-fived each other when we thought my stepmom wasn’t looking.

Seige-
I’ve felt the Palins have had a disfunctional family since I first learned about them- and I don’t think it is due to living in Alaska. The girls have gone on junkets with mom for the last two years; you and I would have them in school, living as normal a life as possible- I believe the Gov sees this as normal. Yes, there are school policies in every state/district about classroom attendance- perhaps she/school officials feel the rules don’t apply to her. In Colorado, the kids can withdraw/be homeschooled- but that involves a lot of paperwork and jumping through hoops in the beginning. They also (at least in Colorado) could have a tutor from the district; work goes home through the tutor, and tutor teaches lessons, grades work, coordinates with classroom teacher/s to make sure the student is progressing.

AKM- thank you for your web site; at least I can find out what’s happening here plus CNN. I love my stepmom a lot, and she has refrained from (most) right wingnut comments about the elections, shootings in Omaha’s “bad neightborhoods” (she reminds me where they are), and the economy. I’d play mind games with her, but now is not the time:)

I am waiting for the ballots to be counted- not so patiently, but I hope the process is done fairly- good there are plenty of observers.

Want to puke? Just popped over to Fox News on BlinkoTV and caught KKKarl Rove saying the biggest mistake Obama could make would be to “go far left as soon as he gets in b/c he campaigned as a centrist” and to do so would make him look like a “liar”.

And no, KKKarl did NOT seem to see the irony in what he was saying AT ALL.

halcrow-
The state of our election system is sad, indeed. I hope that someone/s work on this during the next 2-4 years and begin to fix it, and I don’t think it can be fixed with the newest technology. Perhaps universal registration dates/requirements, voter ID requirements, early voting, mail-in ballots- all states have the same basic rules. I know states like to do their own thing, but I feel this hodgepodge is detremental-

asiangrrl-
Now we move the country forward (after all the recounts, run-off take place). Maybe we can get involved in improving voting (League of Women Voters, Common Cause?), or work on health care issues (Divided We Fail), energy conservation (Denver has Greenprint Denver)…pick an issue you are passionate about, and start locally.

I hate the conventional meme that we are a right-centrist nation and that Obama has to be cautious when he moves into the White House.

Bullpuckey! The right didn’t let a single day go by without beating Obama over the head with his liberalism (or, dare I bring it up again, socialism). Now, they want to claim it’s still a right-centrist country? Bite me.

Thanks for the update on the DC mudflats inaugural party that we hope may someday come to be. Maybe when it gets a little closer we should throw some more specifics out.

So far it looks like the mudflats community continues to thrive, post-election!

One tip for anyone looking to come to DC for Jan. 20 – you could look into home exchanging. I belong to a couple home exchange networks and I got an offer today from someone with a beach house who wanted to come here. I had to say no dice, of course, but it’s possible there are DC area residents who would rather be out of town for the big event (we do have a fair number of Republicans around here)…

Did everyone know that it was only a few years ago (I think about 50-100 years) that different colored people could not marry each other? HOW STUPID!

How same sex couples cannot get married is complete BS!

The same BS arguments are being used as well as the same prejudices used to say that different colored people could not get married.

I LOVE Obama, but I would like to ask him what he thinks about different colored people not being able to get married and how that is different from saying that same sex couples cannot get married!

PS – the owner of the The Manchester Grand Hyatt and The Grand Del Mar in San Diego donated $100,000 SUPPORTING Prop 8 – up to all of you to make your decisions, but I will NEVER stay at either of those hotels – and am ashamed to say that I stayed at the Hyatt with my boyfriend one weekend…..NEVER AGAIN!

Just saw the portion of interview with Matt Lauer (Today Show) that he was able to ask Piper a few questions. Out of the mouth of babes!! He asked questions about school. She missed a lot of school according to her (we know she was paraded on campaign trail). She also said she is having a hard time catching up. Seems Palin had more interest shopping than providing a tutor for the kids. I tag them as unfit parents.

Shows IMO how irresponsible Palins are regarding education. Piper could have stayed with her grandparents and continued schooling. Read somewhere that the pregnant daughter stayed with them so the other little ones could have too.

Also brings to mind the people that are dogging the Obamas to put their girls in public school system. Heard one women say if they put them into private it just confirms they are the ‘elitists’ everyone says they are.

Man that ticks me off (using kind language!!). IMO they should go to private as it is a security issue for the girls. Adults don’t take that into mind at all. These girls are not like regular kids anymore. These girls are a target now. The private school is far better equipped for security reasons. People can’t just wander in whereas they can in a public school. As soon as they decide on school — Obama better put a lid on the people and media the same way the Clintons did for Chelsea.

FYI reminder – McCain is on Leno tonight (Tuesday). Palin is on Situation Room with Wolf on Wed and on Larry King Wed. Man — she won’t shut up now but that’s okay. The more she talks — she digs herself deeper in the muck.

Damn. Bold rampaging once again. My apologies, folks.

As for prop H8, it reminds me of the pro-birth people. They put so much energy into blocking abortions, but they cut all the programs for needy kids who are born.

In the same way, to protect the sanctity of marriage, these same people decide to ban gay marriage, but they ignore the horrible state of opposite-sex marriages. In other words, it’s all about controlling what other people do, not looking at one’s own behavior. Nice.

I agree on the personal boycott; I think the Hyatt (or maybe it’s the Marriott) chain is owned by Mormon family- and that church was a big contributor to prop 8, as was the Roman Catholic church, and Focus (plus other freepers). Interesting link to the donations to/vs Prop 8. I can tell you that I gave money to oppose it, but my name is not on there. Not sure why… AK has quite a GLBT population, so I am actually surprised at how few people are on that list. Wonder where they get their info from and if there is a delay in terms of reporting. I know a gay couple here that were married in CA and would be surprised if they did not donate, but they are not on the list, and neither are any of my other GLBT friends…

Anyway, would just like to reiterate my previously-stated stance on Bible Spice:

I would love it if we, as mudbonders, could make a stand re: HER, and not listen to &/or watch anything in which she is allowed to talk or have her say unopposed. Matt Lauer, Greta, even Larry King. She is irrelevant, and we should not give her any credibility. We should not watch Larry/Matt/Greta instead of Shannyn or politicians that actually contribute to our country in a POSITIVE way.

You all know, as do I, that every single thing that comes out of her mouth is a self-serving lie. So, why are we giving them the benefit of our time or energy?

Until she says something honest &/or there is information out there from a credible source (and yes, I think AKM is credible!), I don’t think it should be listened to/watched/etc. And I don’t expect anything honest from her until she is interviewed by someone with balls. That has not happened yet, and as far as I know there is nothing planned for her to give a REAL interview.

I would like to see all of us devote our time & energy to discussing her in a way that will ultimately benefit Alaskans & Americans, i.e. HOW THE HELL DO WE GET RID OF HER??? IMPEACH? RECALL? ?????

I was ready, willing & able to discuss her in the run-up to the election, as any & all information dispersed prior to people casting their votes on Nov 4th was a necessary evil. But now she needs to be history, unless she takes actual newsworthy action in some way, as that is the most fitting punishment for her until we can get her exposed & out of the Gov of AK seat!

Canadian neighbor,

As someone who lives in the DC area, and as someone who has children in public schools, I have to say I AGREE that Obama should send his kids to private school.

The security is a huge concern. The DC public schools have been floundering for many years (with a few exceptions), to the point where the city had to take control from the school board and give it to the mayor. They are making progress, but I worry about those little girls being in an potentially dangerous setting. DC is a friendly environment for the Obamas, but there are a lot of, um, intense people out there who may not let them live in peace.

The Marriott family is LDS. I don’t know what the Marriotts’ position on Prop 8 was.

I’m pretty sure that “Rosebud” was, at most, a cinematic reference, rather that a reference to obscure 50’s-60’s slang. For one thing, I’m from the 50’s-60’s (unlike most of the Secret Service) and I’d never heard that meaning. For another, a three minute browse throught the Urban Dictionary will reveal that virtually every English word has, or has had, some kind of sexual connotation for somebody somewhere.

Actually, I’m more concerned with Renegade/Renaissance as code names. They sound too much alike.

The schools in DC who’ve had children of uber VIPs have the infrastructure already in place to protect the kids. It seems logical to send them where there is little disruption to other kids who are used to seeing police and secret service already there.. Remember, DC has a huge range of children from our own congress to diplomats kids as well.

I think anyone who calls the Obamas names over where their children go to school is just the same old crap. Just like his terrorist pals, and being a socialist, if his kids go to an unsafe public school and something happens, maybe some warped perverse glee would envelope those people.

From my point of view, he’ll ignore those comments and pick the safest and best school for his kids.

I agree, it is generational. (My stepmom knows better than to start on that topic with me). Arkansas will find they have a significant reduction in foster homes and adoption choices due to that hateful bill.
It is also religious, and we need to build awareness in the public that laws like these support religious views, religious intolerance. There should be separation of church and state!

BTW- in Colorado there is a battle going on the state Republican party bewteen those who want to do the same thing next election while moving more to the right- be true to the conservative values- and those who want the paryt to recognize times have changed. For me, these “conservative values” aren’t what the GOP was under Rockefeller and Goldwater. They will overlap when together, but the presidential detail has one focus, and that’s only, and will always only be his safety. The secondary teams would be with her and the kids, and in a similar manner, they only are focused on their charges.

But the similar names would overlap on very rare occaisions. I doubt it would somehow cause confusion over similarity. ! They’ve been doing this a long time.. Asian: I am not myself religious, but I have read the Bible. One of the very few things that Jesus specifically (not via parable) addresses in the Gospels is that divorce is unacceptable, and that marrying a divorced person is adultery. This is quite different from the Old Testament view.

This is a point where I have to give the Catholic Church credit for consistency. I disagree, but at least in this case their opposition to divorce can be shown to derive directly from Jesus’ theoretically recorded words.

Most fundamentalists, however, do condone divorce, in direct opposition to explicit divine instruction. Oh well, what are you gonna do? If life were a judged debate, they’d all be thrown out for incoherence.

Pre-marital counselling is compulsory with every church marriage here, and counselling is compulsory (by legislation) before divorce.

This silly covenant marriage thing has no meaning – it’s just a way for certain people to make themselves feel “special”. It won’t stop the fundies from divorcing at the same rate they already do.

People should listen to Julia Sweeney on This American Life, Letting go of God.

http://sameritech.wordpress.com/2007/11/23/julia-sweeney-letting-go-of-god-this-american-life/

I’m hoping people with critical thinking skills give this serious thought.

I’m hoping the crazy religious right’s collective head explodes. Along with Sarah Palin’s head, for real. That would get rid of her.

As a side note, for all the people who can’t stand her voice:
I was running an errand on 8/29 about 10 min away from my parent’s house when I heard the VP announcement on NPR. After my errand, I went to my parents to have breakfast with them. While eating, we were listening to NPR. When McCain introduced her, I said “This I have to see. ” So I stopped eating and went to turn on the TV. My parents are in their 70s, so they were lagging behind, but my mom heard Palin’s first words on the radio. As she walked down the hall to get to the TV, mom said “I can’t stand her already–I can’t listen to that voice.” Then we saw McCain playing with his ring while checking out Palin’s rear, with Cindy looking over her husband’s shoulder….

Thankfully, my parents, who have been Republicans since they became citizens, voted for Obama. They have written in other candidates from time to time (when I was 18, my dad wrote me in for mayor), voted for Democrats, and finally this time, my dad changed his registration to be independent. There are only two houses on their street that are not Republican, but they live in Thousand Oaks, which is notoriously Republican, and Obama still won there by 54%. [T.O. is right next to Simi Valley, where some jerk gave money so they could build the Reagan Library there. Not like they had any connection to Simi Valley…why not Santa Barbara or in Bel Air, where the Reagans actually lived? Don’t know…]

Aussie Blue Sky, I find our country rather silly when it comes to marriage in general. Obviously, we aren’t doing it very well, either. I read some years ago about a new social theory called the starter marriage. In essence, it was arguing that everybody deserved to write off her/his first marriage as a test run. I read of people my age (thirty-seven) being twice or thrice divorced, and I just shake my head. Yeah, the sanctity of marriage. Right.

Well, who better to have had access to mega credit cards and shopping trips for her new best friend Sarah, the Dud & kiddos. Maybe that’s why all is so hush hush and under the rug ~ and I don’t believe for a NY minute that Ms Palin has any intention of giving any of the stuff back.

It’s not easy to get an annulment. It costs a fortune and takes ages, and then you may not get it. It reduces down to intention. For example, if it turns out your husband is a wife-beater, a drug addict, a womaniser, etc, then his intention when he married you was to deceive you – so the agreement you thought you made with him according to your vows was never valid. 😀

The Catholic Church and Dr Phil are pretty much in agreement there.

On one of the shows tonight, either Keith or Hardball, when they were talking about the 90,000 votes someone said, “What are they waiting for, the spring thaw?”

It’s really not funny. That amount of votes should have been counted by now, or otherwise thousands of voters are disenfranchised.

My God – we can do better than this in our country. I still can’t believe Missouri keeps “finding” new votes to count. My husband and I believe they are stalling because they probably went red for McCain and he lost the election. That would make Missouri lose it’s reputation for choosing the winner in every Presidential Election. So they are dragging this out hoping more votes for Obama show up.

Aussie Blue Sky (21:28:30) : I think I was a little cavalier in my use of the term theory. I am not an expert in Catholic marriage law, and I was not privy to the diocesian tribunals’ inquiries, which I do understand are non-trivial. My point, such as it was, was that from the viewpoint of friends, the (non)marriages in question appeared to be conventional — courtship, Church wedding, kids. In two cases, there were annulments; in two cases not. I have no idea what specific evidence or testimony was presented to the tribunals.

I’m pretty sure that the two annulments happened, though, because at least one of the parties from each case subsequently got married in a Catholic church.

Campbell responded “I’m with you on that one”. If I could have snapped her neck, I would have!!

The liquor stores would go broke if they waited for me!!!

If you did not know, her husband is Dan Senor (RePug), former advisor to Presidential Envoy in Iraq. Read up on him a while back. He consults on Fox. Her father used to be a Dem Senator. Have to laugh at the boo hiss for Katherine Harris. She certainly made a name for herself worldwide!!

Jamie, Fl. in Fr., Hope you enjoyed your Toronto snow visit! I know I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to France!! My trip was in the summer in 1988. Drove with cousins from Scotland, through England and France. They continued on to Germany. I still have my lace curtains with large colourful parrots on them hanging in my kitchen!! Something I have never seen anywhere else ever.

Time for me to say goodnight!! Thank you to AKM for providing a place for people to meet from distant places!! Have fun everyone!!

No ticks in Alaska!!!!

Ok, that’s it. I wanna move up there. How much does a small house on an acre of ground go for?

The first time my hubby visited Fla with me he was horrified! Not only the mosquitos (we had those in Italy) nor the fact that every other evening the big truck came through town to spray that toxic anti-mosquito poison, but the 95-100° heat and 100% humidity and the utter inhumanity, the savageness and brutality of the wild. He tried to go walk through a protected natural reserve once and came home practically in tears. He said he took one step into the reserve, was immediately attacked by mosquitos and a slew of other flying, biting, stinging things, and the flora was just as savage and violent. I explained that in Fla no one even thinks of leaving the safety of their car, house, office or mall except maybe to go cook on the beach.

I always hated Fla and the heat and left as soon as I could.

I’ll take Alaska 20 below over MN 20 below anytime. It’s that humidity thing. It’s drier up here. MN cold can go right down to the bones sometimes-so it feels a lot colder. But my Dad’s place in central MN is still one of my favorite places to be – so relaxing – now you’ve got me reminiscing!

Northern Quilter AK, I like the cold searing through me. I’m just strange like that. I bet I would love the AK cold, too.

LOL! Staying off-topic… when I had to figure out where to move from AZ, I looked at the U.S. map. Wiped the whole southeast off that map right away because of the heat and humidity. Wiped all deserty brushy areas off of it too. Looked at the property prices for the rest of it, then at the demographics, and that was that. Northern MN was left to choose.

Just a bit on the news on CNN International about SP’s future. Leslie Sanchez talks about her charisma – but hey, didn’t most people see beyond the charisma to see the total ignorance of this woman? How far does charisma alone get you on politics? Obama has charisma and some of us see it in Joe Biden, but it is their compassion and intelligence that makes us continue to listen and want to follow them.

AND no snakes! Of course we do have bears, but then at least you can see and hear them coming (most of the time) :o)!

Cost of land/homes in SE Alaska is expensive! I was lucky and bought a small house in the 90s, it is still over double in value now versus what I paid for it! Of course we are cheaper than many places in CA (SFO and LA) and in Loudin Cty, VA.

Winter is great! I’d rather shovel snow than deal with heat and humidity! Did that for a while in FL and was never so happy as when we moved back to AK Also like only a few people, very little serious crime, no car thefts, but lots of property crimes and inebriation…. Guess there has to be a drawback somewhere!

We could… but I need to get working first. They don’t take people on assistance. And, um… I’m ok with letting the moose run wild, but how about deer and other meat on the hoof or paw?

No wait, don’t think about that before going to bed. Bad dreams and all. Think of pissing off the gov instead :o)

price varies depending on how remote you want to be. Last I checked Anchorage area was comp to the twin cities but other areas are more affordable but then you pay more for things like gas and groceries and such. I’m not sure about the Fairbanks area, it’s been 15 yrs since I’ve lived there. By the way, my parting gift from MN was a not so nice case of Lyme. But I still love it there.

Jamie, I’ve only been to Florida twice – both times in the winter. We walked around in t shirts and went to the beach and everyone else had sweaters on! We stuck out like the tourists that we were! BTW- my ten yr old has chosen French as her first foreign language to learn. She just started about a month ago. She wants to be a pastry chef and travel the world!

Hi,

I remember a list of media contact many moons ago. Does anyone have contacts for Keith O. and/or Rachael Maddow at MSNBC?

I have a story idea I would like to suggest.

Thanks!

That’s the 64 million dollar question! We have toyed with the idea of going somewhere green and beautiful like Vermont or Maine and buying an inn or starting a goat farm and making cheese. My husband talked about moving to a city and looking for a job job. But most likely either somewhere like Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, VA or a city like Philly, Baltimore, even Denver or lower down in Northern VA. Don’t know, depends on what we decide to do. We want to be somewhere young and dynamic though not huge like NYC or Boston. Somewhere beautiful and seasonal and green. Or maybe buying a yurt and starting a commune or moving to the middle of nowhere!

Well Great for your Daughter! I wanted one of my sons to become a pastry chef but no go. I think that’s great and you can tell her I said so! And start her traveling young!

As for Fla – you sound like the Bretons here in France. We go visit French friends in Brittany any time of the year and there are people diving into the ocean for a refreshing swim! Yipes! Water has to be really warm for me.

Helloooo…

Ha hahaaaa asiangrrl: winter winter winter and roadworks – I can identify with that. In fact it’s now winter and they are still digging up the road outside my house (and it’s not much of a road either).

Jamie, I think Florida would turn me into a gibbering wreck – I like snow and cold and dark nights curled up by the fire. Or midsummer nights outdoors in a hot tub when you suddenly realised it’s 3 am and never actually got dark…

What?!? No Bev Harris bashing? Jeez, I mentioned Black Box Voting out at BelliKos not long ago and was informed in no uncertain terms I should prepare to be slammed up against the wall and pummeled. Mystified, I used the Kos search engine to do some research and learned Harris is persona non grata with some active folks out there. Shocked, I left it with a suggestion that perhaps the mission of Black Box Voting ought to trump Harris’ perceived deficiencies. I got no answer.

Curious how the more scrutiny the election gets, the more ballots show up on the “to be counted list.”
How easy is it to hide ballots? change ballots?
What does Alaska need us to do to support an honest count?

12 11 2008

I don’t know why I’m so surprised that they are being so brazen about it, but I admit I was. When the spotlight is on you, and you’re still involved in such shadiness – they really can’t help themselves, can they? They’re so used to doing it, they just thought it was business as usual.

12 11 2008
Northern Exposure

This election count by machine in Anchorage (that can be tampered with easily) is scary
stuff–for now and in the future.

Likewise the voter registration lists in Alaska need to be be seriously cleaned up and checked for duplications (among various political parties, among communities, and among in-state and out-of-state).

Names of the deceased should be removed and names of those who moved away years ago need to be removed.

We are getting a low reported percentage turnout because the registration lists are not accurate!! In Cecily there are as many (or more) people on the voter registration list as there is total population in town (about half of which are children under 18).

That’s about 1000 too many names on a registration list of about 2300-2400.
