Bed Time in Alaska – Open Thread – Mudstock Miami?

11 11 2008

mudflatsihoofmudflats

Good night all!

A few little things….

There is new Mudgear in the Mudflats Shop! Do you heart moose? Do you heart Mudflats? Do you have a Moose-Free kitchen? Go check out the new products!

Anyone interested in a Miami Mudstockon Thursday? Lila, the Mudflatter who attended both Mudstock I in Pittsburgh, and Mudstock II in Chicago is going to be in Miami on Thursday night…the same time that Sarah Palin will be at the Republican Governor’s Convention just a few blocks away! I know this isn’t much notice, but if you’re interested, post a comment in this thread. It could be pretty amazing if a pack of Mudflatters infiltrated the convention! 😉

Also, a shout out to my wonderful niece, who, on Election Day, left the Emergency Room in Pennsylvania, with kidney stones, to go stand in the rain for over an hour to vote for Obama. She showed gumption, grit, and swing-state guilt! Sarah Palin might have even said she was “wired for the mission!” Way to go!

And a good thought to all veterans out there on Veteran’s Day.

I knew that a new thread would appear as I was typing my last – so I will repost here before I start on the new thought..

I am just rejoining the crowd out there in mudflatsland after a very muddy run with Marty in the park.

Just refering back to strangelet : re : SP “she absorbs jargon” and “I see no prior evidence of her having any intellectual curiosity or discipline.”

That is exactly it, which, in my humble opinion, is why she attracted only the uneducated redneck (mostly) or die-hard religious fanatics and lost the rest. Reagan, for as uneducated as he was, understood that he had to appeal to the center and could do that, maybe because he wasn’t hampered by a religious far right agenda. Her lack of curiosity was immediately evident by her lack of understanding of even the basic issue or event and over the two months that she was a candidate showed evidence that, though she memorized the basic talking points and necessary “jargon”, she never went and tried to learn what she didn’t know. And she didn’t seem to care! Her lack of discipline was also evident whenever she went off on her own ideological battle points and thumbed her nose at the McCain campaign and her advisors and blathered on and on during interviews.

At this hour I am ususally first because apparently I am the only one!

I think they are perfect! Radiance and Rosebud – beautiful! And Renaissance for Michelle? We were watching Barack and Michelle arriving at the White House last night on the news, stepping out of their car and my husband commented :
“Wow! It is even more stunning seeing Michelle at the WH than seeing Barack there!”

Hi Jamie,
Just popping in for a while before bed (10.45pm here in Melbourne, Aus)

I totally aggree with you…as I said in an earlier post “she is absolutely, unbelievabley stooopid.”

I cannot believe she actually got a job EVER, let alone as sportscaster on TV, a mayor and on an ‘oil board’ of some sort.

When you hear her (you cannot listen) she just babbles….there is nothing there. Just meaningless unconnected bubbles of *wordage* Nudda, nothing.
(*Did I just make that word up ?!)

I still find it strange that she has got as far as she has….’please explain ?’ (to quote another despicable woman here in Aus)

There has to be more, she did not get there on brains and I do not believe looks can get you THAT far. Perhaps she is a puppet and perhaps Todd is pulling the strings. (With God’s approval or insitence)

He always seems to be in the background….hovering.

A bit of a no no I know, (I know I know I know) not to see a conspiracy theory (???)
…..months ago someone commented here…”Why was Todd in Washington State 1979-1983″ (???dates might be dodgy) It has always been at the back of my mind.
I wonder if he is the ambitious one and for some legal reason could not ‘run’…I have never found any reference or fact or rumour to this….it was just implied.

There I go again…seeing something that might/possibly is not there….

…dunno…?

This from the David Frum interview :

“But Republicans and conservatives have always insisted that America is a just country that their people, the American people are decent and moderate.

So in a funny way I think a lot of us, all I can say that the election of Barack Obama proves we were right.”

So according to him, the Republican Party deserves the credit for putting the first African-American in the White House? What planet does he live on? I know that there are a lot of educated Republicans who are do not look at color at all. But all those people who screamed racist epithets and refused to vote for a black – what percentage are Repugs?

Hi Zim! Hi Tired Mom! Always great to cross paths with you guys, too!

I understand the mayr of Wasilla thing – I mean 6700 people (how many were of voting age?) I think someone pointed out that being 700 votes ahead is a landslide.

But Governor? I watched a couple of those debates between the 3 or 4 candidates and she seemed even then stoopid, so obvious that she joked, flirted and talked around every question, every issue without ever making a point.

I also watched that youtube video when she and Todd were interviewed after he had won his snowmobile race (what’s it called again?) and Todd sounded duh-less intelligent than a rock and she sounded like an uneducated redneck, there chomping on her gum. They tried for the makeover with the expensive clothes, the expensive stylist and the speeches on the teleprompter – but her idiocy and ignorance were just impossible to mask. I hope Alaskans who aren’t blinded by her good looks or swallowed up in her blizzard of words or sucked in by her religious ideology can finally see her for what she really is.

One more word – I had heard that during the campaign Todd was sent off on his own to give a couple of speeches. Then people started wondering where he had disappeared to. I’ll bet they just realized how stupid he is, not even up to doing what his wife was doing – reading off teleprompters.

“Who says the economy’s down? @rubby :🙂

@Aussie Blue Sky : There is still a good part of the population that has money to burn. Even here in France, though restaurant business is down about 20-25%, it is mostly companies cutting back on expense account lunches or individuals who can’t afford the big lunch everyday and are picking up sandwiches, but those couples and families/friends that go out at night are spending the same or more, because they still want to be able to treat themselves and not count pennies when they do go out.

@Twinky Winky – I so totally agree with you! There just aren’t enough people out there who are still under her spell. But what we can hope for is that she takes away all of the right wing religious one-issue voters from the Repugs so they never again have the chance of winning.

This is completely off-topic, but it has been bugging me and I want opinions from a group of thinking people. It’s about the car industry. We are on the verge of car company bankruptcy (again? wasn’t there a chrysler bailout about 20 years ago?) because car sales have reached a 25 year low. My question: why do Americans need to buy new cars every 3 years or so? Really. I drive a 1993 Ford Escort Wagon that gets 40mpg. They don’t even MAKE cars anymore that get that mileage. I LOVE my car and won’t part with it until it dies. Why should I give a flying you know what about car companies that have been pumping out big fat gas guzzling monsters for years? To hell with them. There are probably enough used and new cars RIGHT NOW in this country to keep everybody in wheels for another 5 years. How about we start recycling cars until they are actually used up? Does this gotta-have-a-new-car mentality bug anybody else?

I agree about the new car thing – we practically drove ours into the ground before we got new ones. Debt = The American Way of Life! We stopped using credit a year ago because it got so out of hand. Now it’s cash for everything (while paying off the last of the credit bills). We bought less of a house intentionally with the understanding that our expenses would grow as our kids did. No keeping up with the Joneses! By the way I commute 68 miles one way – we do what we have to do when we do that thing we do;) You Betcha!

The LATEST version of what’s going on is that some staffers came up with her to help deal with all the stuff in the belly of the plane, and for the last few days they’ve been sorting buttons and t-shirts and bumper stickers in sarah’s living room. Uh huh. Did the boxes of t-shirts get mixed in with Trig’s baby clothes or something? Why don’t these news people see such BS for what it is? NO WAY they unloaded all the REGULAR campaign goodies into Sarah’s living room for sorting (drove them all the way to Wasilla?????????). Damn…I’m getting that kick-her-in-the-teeth urge again. My husband and I are gleeful right now. “Why should I give a flying you know what about car companies that have been pumping out big fat gas guzzling monsters for years?”
It’s a shame for the employees who have no say in the design and construction of the cars………Maybe we should bail them out, throw out the CEOS & Designers and let the employees run the company as a co-op. I bet they have some good ideas. They are a
valuable talent pool we need to maintain.
I’m with you. In ’81, I bought a 2 year old diesel rabbit that gets 50 m p g. Repair/maintainance costs approx $1,000. per year. Been driving one ever since. My present ’83 hatchback is 25 years old, maintainance costs rising like everything else BUT still 50 mpg. I had a brake problem in a rural area with no motels several years ago. My companion & I parked in a gas station rolled the front seats back and slept, until morning and I could get a tow to a garage! USER FRIENDLY!
The general car commercials on TV are the most deluded, disfunctional, of any other product on TV ( well Pharmaceuticals rival them) Appealing to the baser values of our selves. I’m sure there would be fewer accidents if people didn’t re-enact James Bond behind the wheel!

Morning all.

A few thoughts. My nephew’s wife is similar to Sarah in a number of ways. Interesting thing about her that you see with Piper and was probably true of Sarah, she was extremely sexualized as a child. Her mother prominently displays a picture of her at 11 where she looks like Lolita. A little Jon Benet Ramsey there.

I have noticed that all these whacked beauty queen types are usually daddy’s girls.

Sarah most definitely sexualizes things. Remember all the winking and come-on at her debate. This has carried her a long way but it isn’t the right element for higher politics.

Jamie, I’ve been wondering about this myself. I love that fact that Prez Elect Obama is wanting to help education. I hate to take up for the car companies, but they produced what Americans wanted. Bigger with more goodies and who cares about how much gas it drinks. We are a spoiled consumer nation. Hopefully, we will learn some lessons from the hard times we are going through right now, but I am not sure we will. I have hope that our new President will push green and we will design cars that will get away from petroleum products. Maybe we will even concentrate on making solar for our homes more affordable. Amazing when you go to other countries, they are way ahead of us on this.
Brazil is energy independent. They are driving GM and Ford cars that are flex cars. This was as long as 8 years ago when I was there. Europe has solar panels everywhere. I hope that in our new energy plan, that we have some incentives to lower the cost of solar as it is pretty prohibitive right now.

I did some research, and found an interesting tidbit..

Barbie Grifter wants to run in 2012..Ok.. but if history is a fair indicator, she’s in trouble.

From what I can find, the most recent example of someone winning after losing as VP, was FDR.. in 1932.. 12 years after losing with household name James R Cox..

Now, I don’t think it would be unfair to say that Barbie Grifter will never be an FDR..

So, she’s got an incredible uphill battle. And well before she’d even win the nomination, all her skeletons will be unraveled and she’ll end up a crossing guard in Wasilla at the Wasilla Elementary.

Just don’t think she’s got loads if hurdles to overcome.

Thank you AKM and SC Sista for being the only ones to acknowledge veterans this day. There are people who, having been discarded by the present and past administrations and politicians once their usefulness as props gone, are not doing so well due to injuries directly attributable to their service in wars. Whether we agree with these wars or not, these are the people who were marched into the fray by our government. The government needs to address the discrepancies in the way they are treated once they are deemed to be past their usefulness. I hope that President Elect Obama acts on this and prevents the further maiming of those who are still serving. The families of these veterans thank you for your thoughts. (Gets off soapbox)

Thank you for your comments. As to your concerns about Veteran care in our VA hospitals, I have found that the care varies greatly from facility to facility. I’m sure you remember the reports of the neglect of veterans and the terrible conditions at the Walter Reed medical center a few years ago. Conversely, a couple of years ago my uncle was in Perry Point Veterans Hospital in Perry Point, Maryland. I couldn’t have bought better care for him if I had all of Warren Buffet’s money. One big problem is that, many times, an injury that is sustained by a member of our military will become a huge problem later in the veteran’s life. The VA often will wash their hands of all responsibility then.

Last night on Rachel Maddow’s show she was so funny after she had read a Sarah Palin statement. You could tell she was struggling with it and afterwards she apologized. She shouldn’t apologize. It’s impossible to read a Sarah Palin statement without sounding stupid. She speaks in run-on sentences and rarely says anything that can be considered intelligent.

I truly believe the Republican party does not want Sarah Palin as their presidential candidate because they know that she is a loose cannon and that they will be unlikely to be able to control her. I think the party is going to continue to denigrate her to invalidate her. She can do it on her own, though. So Alaska, it’s up to you. You have to protect us from this woman. If Stevens wins and is then kicked out of the Senate (which is a given), you have to make sure that Sarah does not run for his seat and win.

BTW, if she were to run in a special election, does she have to quit as Governor?

Common Law and precedent recognizes the corporation as a person. The problem is the current court ignores the responsibilities corporations have and only acknowledges their privileges. Then they make up law (what’s this about activist judges?) The equivalent would be for the court to say a convicted murderer should only get a year because their body is property and would be incarcerated so it would be the state taking property. The court’s argument is right up there with appointing George Bush president.

I doubt that it is possible to get an amendment setting back hundreds of years of law that is pretty much international as well.

What we really need is a better court. Electing Obama is a first step.

I HOPE Miami MUDFLATTERS show up – just listened to snippets of her interview and just read the installments here on her wardrobe – she is wearing one of her new outfits in this interview and the one she is doing with Matt Lauer she clarifies so succintely that she never asked for anything, blah, blah, blah. However for someone else to go buy the clothes without her knowledge wouldn’t they have to know sizes for all the family???

Why is she giving a press conference in Miami this week? (just reported and stated that it is not usually done?)

What is wrong with this picture – I have a step-daughter who has a sociopath personality disorder – there really is nothing that can be done for this PD – it has been a horrible series of events for the past 5 years and it is NO JOKE {it really does exist} – the only way to deal is to cut this person off so they don’t have an audience. Everything I see leads me to believe that SP displays many of these traits. It will only get worse as she puts her “SPIN” on how people have treated her and NOT the other way around.

I would love to think that she will exposed but one of the traits is to cut & run when people get to close to the truth, complain that SHE had nothing to do with it {whatever that action is} and why is everyone “picking on ME?”. She will change allegiances as often as her underwear.😉 Mart in NC

Watched part of the her interview with Lauer.

That pink Michael Jackson top is just… not a thriller. So out of touch that she really ought to beat it.

Words that stick out: also. tho. articulate.

Sounds like she’s saying the same thing over and over to the different folks with the “exclusive” interviews. What she says here is similar to what she says on the ADN vid and with Gretta.

Complains about the media not getting things right. But she’s not really been forthcoming with honest information, has she? Take those alleged medical records, for instance.

She seems to have a control issue with the media. For a journalism major, it’s a strange thing to hear a politician complain about how she cannot control what the media does. As with the library/book thing, she appears to not understand that free speech control by government officials is expressly prohibited by the federal !st Amendment.

She’s got a really nice kitchen. Lots of stainless steel appliances and a nice, large cooktop. Brings me back to her increase of the Wasilla sales tax for the building of her son’s ice hockey arena. Did she pay sales tax for all those pricey items? Are sales tax records a matter of public record? Can someone put in a written request and see if she paid?

That house needs a closer look. If anyone reading this in the Wasilla/Palmer area has access to court records, take a look at the real estate filings. Is there a mortgage? For how much and with whom? What sorts of public records are there which may be pertinent?

It’s one thing to make allegations that the Palins did not pay for the construction of their house (I’d be interested in seeing what the Alaska law is on reporting requirements re gifts) but it’s quite another to find strong indications that it actually happened that way. Whatever is found can always be shared with the IRS because they have their own regulations and reporting requirements re gifts over a certain value.

Are the Alaska statutes, Perdons?, online? Can someone link me if so?

Thanks!

It is amazing to see people in this country either WAKING UP or FINALLY not be COWARDS and talking about how RIDICULOUS the past few years have been. Paris Hilton received more media coverage than the horrible job Bush was doing on most networks. And why was this you ask? BECAUSE these networks were all feeding on everyone’s psych! If you are not living the high life like Paris Hilton you are a LOSER. AND PEOPLE BOUGHT INTO IT! Instead of saving and buying neccessities, people were WASTING money on expensive clothes, cars that ate gas like there was no tomorrow, and CRAP!

I only buy things when they are on sale. I do my grocery shopping by buying items ONLY on sale – looking at the circular. I buy more than one of items I use a lot and freeze meat. My boyfriend did not even know what raincheck was until I taught him. And on nights when I do NOT want to cook and clean and all that crap, I go to a place that is cheap or has a happy hour special.

I have been given a lot of luxuries in this world. I have lived an amazing and rich life. However, cuddling in bed and knowing you are with someone who loves you is MORE fulfilling than a new Gucci purse. Spending time with my family and enjoying each other’s company at someone’s house is a lot more fun than going out to eat and talking about sports. POINT: love and understanding and REAL companionship and LOVE are MORE IMPORTANT than anything! AND THEY ARE FREE! Don’t fall into a society that makes you feel like shit if you do not play reindeer games.

As far as the car company question…..I don’t feel we need new cars. We need fuel efficient and environmentally friendly cars. Until those are released, so long as your car gets from Point A to B and is NOT polluting the world HORRIBLY (that area is gray) than rock on. I drive a 5 series BMW cause my boyfriend bought it and I HATE IT! I am Jewish and NEVER wanted to own a BMW, Mercedes or Volkswagen – I do not FORGIVE and FORGET what role they played in the Holocaust – IBM too, but because I love my BF and it is HIS – I TRY NOT TO FIGHT TOO often about it.

Jamie, I think it’s 45 miles one way – and yes, she has a big gas guzzler and I’m sure along w/ the per diem, she probably claims mileage
_________________

She’s entitled to claim the mileage if she’s driving in her own vehicle and paying for the gas from her pocket. Claiming the per diem is a form of double dipping on the expenses. Getting reimbursed twice for the same expense, however, is a violation of IRS regs.

And then there’s the whole issue of vehicle ownership. If the state owns the vehicle, and pays for the gas and upkeep, then she’s not entitled to claim any expense on it. Can anyone confirm who owns the vehicle she travels in, etc.?

@“Why should I give a flying you know what about car companies that have been pumping out big fat gas guzzling monsters for years?”

Unfortunately, if the car companies go belly up so do all their hundreds of suppliers and think of all the job losses and suffering that would mean.

I don’t support the way the auto companies have been manufacturing vehicles, but you have to admit that they responded to their customers’ wants (not needs, but wants).

As I wrote in the forum, at least where I live, those who “want” tend to be wealthy Republicans.

All I can to you devoted Mudflatters, thanks for the updates, the laughs, the cameraderie all during the election cycle. I watched as returns rolled in….disappointed though cuz I really wanted Obama to grab ALL of the votes from your great state, but, hey, we cant be too greedy can we! Down here in the lowly 48, majority of the public is tiring of even seeing and/or hearing about SP any further. Then, lo and behold, apparently Matt Lauer from Today Show went to Alaska to interview and I guess she cooked dinner for him, I could not and did not watch the piece…too much info about that woman for me. Anyhow, now Mudflats sells tees and such, that’s great. There is another mudflats group in Ohio but its for a bar and grill that sits very close to a mudflats area and it would be fun if anyone wanted to check out what they say about mudflats. To be honest, until I found YOUR site, I had no idea what a mudflat was, but realize now they can be quite dangerous if you dont watch your step. So is that the theory behind your forming mudflats – that your elected officials better watch their step – cuz mudflats is out to get ’em! You go girl! Thanks, again.

Several governors of note were known to drive themselves to work. Some, Michael Dukakis, for instance, would ride public transportation from his home in the ‘burbs to the State House. No state police protection ever accompanied him. Does a trooper follow Palin in another vehicle? If so, what a waste of taxpayer funds as she puts in for reimbursements and the state already covers the cost of the trooper and his car.

About the car industry, I think we need the industry but I don’t think it will end up being as big as it is now. I think it will have to contract and rethink how they do things. I believe they need to look at making cars more efficent and of good quality. I also think we need to inspect the reason that a small ford truck costs $21,000 here and the same model built in the same factory is priced at $8,000 in Mexico. They like to say it’s because of pollution control, give me a break.
Other industries that have contracted may be able to expand, the steel industry for example. Currently we have a model locally in Portland, OR. Portland Steal owns a series of junk yards The junk yards sell the parts until the car is stripped then it gets melted down for reuse. Can this steel be reused for cars in detroit? I don’t know the answer,
It seems to me as a plant manager I need to instruct my purchasing department to make a priority to search locally and nationally for vendors,
To get the most bang for our buck and maybe create a job or two while we are aquiring washers, bolts, pipe and such. I am sure I will get flack for this but given they are aware their jobs are currently on really thin ice not to much. It is certainly worth investigation. Then to add to that if I find something that is not produced here is there some one who would produce it? Can they do it at a price that won’t bankrupt me? Currently things are fairly slow though we recieved several orders this month we have nothing but time to see what we can do. Hopefully many companies will follow suit.

Reading the posts on the state of the car industry, I remember reading an article about Chrysler’s diesel cars that are sold only in Europe and some parts of Asia. Chrysler puts a diesel in most of the models that are sold in this country, including the Chrysler 300D, but they are all shipped overseas. The Dodge PT Cruiser with a diesel engine gets 39 MPG. The problem is that the EPA won’t allow them to be sold in this country as they say that they are too dirty.

I read somewhere a few weeks ago that Sarah Palin fired half her security people (there were 3 full time and 1 half time remaining), and drove herself around in a State-owned 4-wheel drive SUV without additional protection. She now has, according to stories over the last few days, a team of 4 security guards with her at all times. So that probably means she’s at least tripled what she had originally for security.

I am guessing it would be possible to clean them up with some technology that is probably already out there but has been ignored. Years ago I had a Dodge (i think) Duster that was diesal, it was a refit my husband created. The thing went 530,000 miles before it finally red lined for good. Got great mileage also.
Relaxing EPA standards would be a mistake, try going to a place like Guadalajahara, Mexico for a month. I spent a month there, came back to LAX on a day there was an unsafe air alert and hyperventilated breathing normally because I was getting so much more oxygen than I had become used to. That is a true story and it is still true today.
Businesses in this country have been lazy worried more about the bottom line and the quarter, in stead of looking long term. They will go cheap without worring about the consequences to the very people they are depending on for their profit. This disconnect is the basis for all of our problems, even I am guilty of it at times.
I think the hardest part of changing our direction will be trying to retool our thinking. There is an awful lot of movers and shakers out there in serious denial at the moment hopefully they will come around.

When I traveled throughout Europe, I was impressed by all the trains, busses, and trolleys. Also saw many bikes. Here in America, our trains started to disappear after WW11. Even in the 1950’s, I could travel by train from my home here in Iowa, and go to Kansas City, Missouri to shop. Now–one has to drive a car to get there. Too bad. Instead of improving train travel, railroads left us.
Automobiles were delivered to dealers by train. Now they are delivered by trucks.
All this has put our Highways in jeopardy. Our family was in the Automobile business for more than 60 years. Cars were delivered by train–4 cars in each box/car. During WW11, there were NO cars made for 4 years. Our family started to sell Farm Machinery. Having seen cars that sold for $450.00 for a new car, to $25,000.00 or more–blows my mind. My father is probably rolling over in his grave. He always said—-The writing is on the wall. Daddy was right.

I caught some of the Greta interview last night, had to keep flipping channels as I could only take SP in small doses.

What struck me was the cabinetry. I kept thinking those are high end custom order jobs. Thousands of dollars! Then I caught the art work above the kitchen window and asked myself hmmm wonder how much those little fishies cost?

The distraction continued when I watched her walk by the refrigerator and I took a look a the rest of the appliances. My mind wondered if that is where the perdiem money went? Gifts?

Then they showed the furniture and I again kept thinking there is no way this woman and her family are living on what she and supposedly first Dud make.

Finally I could take no more of her babbling and cooking in the designer suit and Greta’s obscenely inane questions and had to turn off the TV.

Enchanted and Healing

G’Morning fellow muddies. Life is getting in the way of board time lately but I’m trying to keep in touch. Really I am!

Have you had the opportunity to thank a vet today? I always thank each one of them who sit at my desk. I’ve *almost* gotten to the point where I can do that without choking back tears when I thank them. Nam always comes to mind. Remembering how utterly ugly and disgusting our country reacted at the time, taking out the anger on our service men and women, still cuts me to the core. There are never enough ways to say how sorry we are for all of the *hero’s welcomes* back then.

I just watched the Lauer interview and noted a few observations. First I also watched Greta’s interview and the substance of Palin’s *unrehearsed* answer session sounds similar in each interview. I’ll give her credit for her photographic memory. If you say it often enough, it must be true.

Also, I noticed that she was decked out to the nines (minus the stilettos which I suppose would cause her to slip on the flooring and go boom) sans an apron while pretending to prepare food. WHO DOES THAT?? Oh that’s right- she has a never-ending supply of consigned clothing at her fingertips so if she stains a suit, no biggy. Also, what was she mixing in that little bowl? It had to be the most thoroughly mixed concoction ever, following strict directions to MIX WELL!

I noticed someone slinking down the stairsteps and out of the way of the cameras. Who does not want to be a part of the interview? lol

Track’s military picture was kinda leaning against the windows. No frame, no thought. A last minute gesture to include a patriotic moment?

I also noticed a tiny cornered area in the kitchen which appears to be an office of sorts, with family pictures lined up along its countertop. If this her office away from Juneau? Are you kidding me??

I can’t wait to see the following episodes. Weee!

Good morning mudpuppies. I went out to breakfast with my veteran this morning. Our local breakfast cafe had patriotic pancakes for their special (strawberries, blueberries, and whipped cream). We came home, and I got to hear that it was time to take down my signs as the election was over. However, I had to say “no, at least not until election day”. I’m still proudly displaying a “Veterans for Obama” sign in my picture window and have taped up my Obama/Biden yard sign under it. (Well, I did at least take stuff out of the yard.)

I’ve got so hooked on Mudflats, I’ve been neglecting to post on the Denver Post (which I prefer to my local Fort Collins Coloradoan). However, I did go to the Denver Post this morning and post the following for Veteran’s Day:

“Remembering our veterans this Veteran’s Day and into the new administration.

Thank you to each and every veteran as well as to all active duty members currently serving and our reserves and national guards. Thank you also to their friends and families who have supported them.

Remembrance should be more than a day filled with patriotic speeches and lapel poppies. It should involve a commitment to fully funding veteran’s benefits, and serious action on the backlog of VA cases.

In addition to VA benefits, our states and every level of government as well as businesses should review their policies for benefits and affirmative action for vets. If the new administration starts up seed money for infrastructure projects, I want to see a strong hiring of vets to include apprenticeships and other training programs. I’d also like to see first chance at VA and HUD repos for veterans.

Thank you again to all for their service.”
————————————————————-

The thread on which I posted started with a Denver Post article back in May and is called “Helping Our Veterans”. It has links to lots of articles, especially on psychological issues, particularly PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), to include not only combat PTSD, but also PTSD as a result of other trauma in service such as sexual assault. If interested, here’s a link to the start of the thread: http://neighbors.denverpost.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=9124957&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

CAR INDUSTRY

Any body in “sales’ knows that the objective is to supply what ‘will sell’
So it’s a mistake to fault the US Auto Industry for offering gas guzzling SUVs, trucks, minivans Hummers etc….if that is what buyers “desire”.
Let’s not forget that one of the intended consequences of the Iraq war, was to lower gas prices, and maintain the American way of life: Red Staters tooling around in their trucks.
So you can’t blame the auto industry for being short sighted….Wolfowitz wasn’t expecting gas prices at $140 a barrel either!
The collapse of the Banking/credit markets cannot be blamed on the auto industry either.
Interestingly the Auto Industry would be greatly helped by Canadian style national health care. It’s now easier for GM to manufacture autos, up the road in Socialist Canada, than it is in our great nation.

RE: Car Industry

Please, please, please put “Who Killed the Electric Car?” on your netflix list. It’s a very fun, entertaining film about the US car industry. It shows how the car companies (at least GM) may have colluded with the oil companies to keep us gas-guzzling. It’s also a little known fact that the car and oil companies killed the electric streetcars out west.)

Please don’t fault the American people ONLY on the cars they’ve been buying. It takes two to tango. Just like the sub-prime mess and credit card debt. Unregulated companies prey on the unsuspecting and ignorant.

But the important thing is that electric car technology exists. It works. It’s fantastic. And it’s been kept from us.

Her statements about how Obama voted to cut off funding for the troops, without telling that McCain did exactly the same–only difference was whether there was or wasn’t a timeline. Parading her children around like political props, including putting Piper in front of Philadelphia hockey fans so that they might not boo. Johnny, looking worried, said, ‘Dad, I think the UPS guy wants to buy Mom .’

Hiya Muddies! Overcast & 37, here in Chi.

With AKM’s fascinating 3 part report on Palin, I was totally unable last night to even comment as I went through the first 2 parts with over 500 comments which I do like to catch up on, as I go, so I know where everyone is at currently. I never even had a chance to post, by the time I caught up, realized my lurker status, I was half asleep.

So, I admit, having just powered up this massive monster HP, I still find myself behind, much like I always was in grade school. So, with a little luck I will consume Palins Burning Books thread, though I still feel a little full of Goofiness & Cookies.

Sorry for the long post but thought some might enjoy an email from my friend who was in Nigeria when election results came in. Just neat to hear international reaction first hand.
THE INFO ABOUT ELECTION REACTION STARTS PARAGRAPH SIX- THE OTHER IS JUST INTERESTING TRAVELOGUE!

November 08, 2008
I wrote the message below a few days ago but have been unable to find
internet access until today.
The conditions in Nigeria are not like any
other place I have visited. Primitive is an appropriate description.
This weekend we are on a break from heat, dust, bus and touring by being
at a resort hotel outside of Enugu. We have running water (although the
hot was the color of tea this morning when I started the shower–but it
is nice just to have a shower and working plumbing!) AND fairly
consistent electricity WITH air conditioning AND armed guards AND a
restaurant with a range of food choices AND some of the comforts at
home. It is a very nice place and our dusty crowd is in need of some
down time. We had a long, long day on the bus yesterday that dangerously
went into the evening. Having two very visible armed guards with
automatic weapons on board prevented us from being stopped at numerous
road blocks.

There is no tourism industry in Nigeria which explains the conditions we
have experienced, so the sight of 30 white people is quite strange and
met with puzzled stares. However, as unusual a sight as we are, Nigerian
people are quick to smile beautiful smiles, wave, shake hands and say
“Welcome” if a gesture of friendliness is extended. They are kind,
interesting, and warm people who are impressively industrious at
creating small businesses out of a few sticks on the side of the road to
meet the needs of food, tire inflation, oil changes, pouches of water
(instead of bottles), you name it, you can find it on the side of the
road. The infrastructure in this country is abysmal considering the oil
industry wealth, and yet the people endure.

We have met ambassadors, representatives of the government, and the Emir
of Kano. We have also been interviewed by the national celebrity
reporter and featured on TV as the start of tourism in Nigeria (?!? Not
by our recommendation!).

We are traveling from the arid north to the more verdant south and
crossed the Niger river several times yesterday. The ethnic groups have
changed as we have progressed from the lands of the Hausa, Fulani, Igbo,
and onward. The southern areas are a distinct shift from Muslim
dominated presence to a an increasingly Christian presence as we head
southward, reflected in the dress of women in particular. The beautiful
clothing ranges from gorgeous, colorful garments and head dresses made
from yards of fabric, to Muslim attire of pale and plain head drapes on
women. The Emir and his attendants wore yards and yards of lace. As we
move away from the Muslim areas, people are more coolly and casually
dressed. There is a very good article on this Emirate available on
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/01/world/africa/01shariah.html?ex=1354165200&en=b01422ddf290cfe9&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
if you are interested in some of the details that have lead to violence
in very recent years.

The returning Peace Corp volunteers are a group of very interesting
folks with a few family members in tow. Two of the family members in
their early 40s were born here and there are a few married couples who
served together. My oral history interview project is not going very
far, we have had much of our time filled with activity and when the
chance comes, we are tired and need the quiet time to process all that
we are observing. I am OK with that and just hope I can do some
interviews with Aunt Jean!! She is at the market in Enugu with a few
others right now while I am taking some time to catch up on email and
rest a little with a sore throat and a twisted ankle that is recovering
well. Plus, I have had about all the heat I can take and need to stay
cool at least for one day!!

The biggest event so far??!! The election of Barrack Obama!! Our hotel
rooms have had CNN (when the TV works and the electricity is on),
sometimes it is the only channel. Most of us stayed up on and othe night and watched the election results come in. Aunt Jean woke me up
at 5:30 am in time to watch the wonderful acceptance speech. What was
even more exciting was the thrill of Nigerians. Some of whom had also
watched the results all night long, as well as every debate and the
primaries. One man said to me “I was for Hillary and Obama” and most all
said the day before the election “I am for Obama” with a thumbs up all
around. My Obama t-shirt attracted a crowd in the market in Kano with
people very confused why we were out of the country during the
elections. We tried to explain the foreign concept of absentee voting
but I am not sure they believed us. I had saved my “I voted” sticker to
wear since hand delivering my absentee ballot a month ago to the
supervisor of elections office to assure that our votes had been
counted. A flash of an Obama button or a bumper sticker still brings big
smiles and “thank you, thank you” for voting to Obama (“He’s part
African, you know”). In discussions with individual Nigerians, their
take on Obama is remarkably similar to mine — a statesman, person of
dignity, brilliant, inclusive ideas, etc.

A very touching moment the morning we received the results was when I
saw three men in a garden stripping “cow” meat and threading it on
skewers ready to dredge in their own concoction of spices (they let me
taste their special mix of spices– very good!) getting it ready for the
grill. I asked if I could take a photo, I think they wanted a tip to
take a shot, but when they saw my Obama t-shirt they were happy to talk
about him instead (I was now an insider). I asked them to please pray
for his safety and his work. One of the men saw my concern and stopped
cutting the meat and stood and offered a lengthy prayer to Allah in
Arabic or Hausa (?). It was very touching to see the pride and
excitement of the people of this country.

Both Aunt Jean and I have wondered “What the heck were we thinking when
we decided to come on this trip?” and are also glad to see such a
distinctly different place – always a great mind adjustment.

Hope all is well there and the celebrating continues. Maya Angelou was
on CNN this morning (it was a Larry King rerun) saying she is thrilled
in the true sense of the word — vibrating in the excitement of the
election results. SO ARE WE!

Love to all,

That guardian article was pretty funny. IMHO Romney and Alaska’s Brewster would be better than the loser team just floated. But why would I want to help the enemy?

Still, while we value freedom of religion in our country, Palin’s brand is quite frightening with it’s anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, and anti-Muslim viewpoints. It should be receiving a much greater exposure, because dominionism and the New Apostolic Reformation are not just some kind of evangelical neo-pentecostal/charismatic blend, but rather seem like a hate group to me.

What’s very deceptive is that there are a number of pretty normal decent evangelicals and lots of traditional mainstream denominations also have charismatic prayer groups, however, the thing Palin is involved in is a horse of a different color, not just an alternative form of religious expression. I appreciate that some progressives want to dismiss much religion or group all evangelicals or neopentecostals together, but, for example, Don Miller who wrote Blue Like Jazz led a prayer at the DNC. Religion does not have to be your thing in order for you to read up and try to understand how different and dangerous what Palin is involved in is.

Muddies, a post for our Native Veterans today…
my Tribute goes out to our Veteran Choctaw & Comanche Code Talker brothers & forefathers who contributed so much to the real victory during WW1 & WW2. I am proud that this year they finally were given the Recognition in HR4544 they so deserved, and to all veterans, I salute you.

Also, a special shout out to those vets, who I supported, at http://www.votevets.org, during the campaign, they worked so hard to help Barack get elected.

Here are some sections from HR4544 I would like to share.

2008, H.R. 4544 The Congress finds the following:
(1) When the United States entered World War I, Native Americans were not accorded the status of citizens of the United States. (2) Without regard to that lack of citizenship, members of Indian tribes and nations enlisted in the Armed Forces to fight on behalf of the United States.(3) The first reported use of Native American code talkers was on October 17, 1918. (4) Because the language used by the Choctaw code talkers in the transmission of information was not based on a European language or on a mathematical progression, the Germans were unable to understand any of the transmissions.(5) This use of Native American code talkers was the first time in modern warfare that such a transmission of messages in a native language was used for the purpose of confusing an enemy.

2.) (6) On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and the Congress declared war the following day. (7) The Federal Government called on the Comanche Nation to support the military effort during World War II by recruiting and enlisting Comanche men to serve in the Army to develop a secret code based on the Comanche language. (8) The United States Army recruited approximately 50 Native Americans for special native language communication assignments.

(10) During World War II, the United States employed Native American code talkers who developed secret means of communication based on native languages and were critical to winning the war. To the frustration of the enemies of the United States, the code developed by the Native American code talkers proved to be unbreakable and was used extensively
throughout the European theater.

Our Native American Code Talkers, We Honor you Today!

It was comforting to see they are taking the death threats very, very, very seriously. They interviewed our State Treasurer who was meeting Barack to take some shots in a small basketball game, the tres. was nearly tackled he said as he approached the gym, “2 more steps and I would have been”, he said. Like you said though, the All Mighty can help there too. After JFK, RFK, MLK, and Reagan, I believe they are taking far more steps to protect Barack than any other President in history. Will there be tension in the Wasilla household? Will Sarah be blamed (she did look sort of sketchy and tired in the last interview)?

Maybe Cezar Capone doesn’t think that moose belong in chile?

Porn director has second thoughts about Sarah Palin adult film offer
Chris Parry, Vancouver Sun
Published: Tuesday, November 11, 2008
Bill Fisher, AKA 41-year-old pornography director Cezar Capone, seems to have had second thoughts about his offer last week to pay failed vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin $2 million to appear in an adult film.

Fisher’s website, CezarCapone.com, has been taken down, as has his public letter making the offer to the Alaska Governor and her husband, and Fisher’s MySpace page now makes no mention of the “indecent proposal” that hit headlines over the weekend.

Fisher had initially offered to hold $2 million in escrow to prove he was serious about the Palin porno, calling her a “beautiful mother recognized by all of America as well as the rest of the world – the most desirable woman over 40.” He also offered her husband Todd $100,000 and a new snowmobile if he’d partner up with his wife in the production.

On his MySpace page, Fisher states, “I have been shooting all my life. My Father was a photographer and I knew what an F-stop was before I could tie my shoes. I don’t shoot bikini-pop. I don’t do weddings. I don’t do press or paparazzi. I don’t do portraits or head-shots. I’m $15,000.00 a day and even if you pay me the 15K, I still won’t do your wedding.”

Palin still hasn’t publicly responded to the offer, which was sent to her administration office in Juneau, Alaska, on Nov. 6.

It’s amazing to me too how Palin’s extreme religious views were swept under the rug during the election.

This woman has been given the biggest kid-glove pass in the history of politics. It’s scary to me how powerful the extreme right-wing fundies really are in this country. They are a minority but a very powerful minority and very well-funded. They work tirelessly to inject religion into our schools and goverment and to suppress individual rights against minorities that don’t fit into their ‘religious’ beliefs.

I wish just one person would ask Sarah Palin why she thinks God is opening these doors for her? What the hell does she bring to the table that would help this country at this time? Someone needs to get her talking about her religion and get her to talk her God-speak. I think is would shock even the more conservative types.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO CALL HER ON THIS! Come on Larry King! Make her explain her religion in detail.

There were a couple of interesting points about Darfur: 1. She repeated the stuff about divesting investments – which has been disproven and I think she actually had a hand in blocking it. 2. She seemed unaware that Darfur is part of Sudan and not a country in itself. I might be wrong, but there was something not quite right with how she referenced Darfur/Africa.

Maybe Larry King should ask her why, if God thinks she is so important, she wasn’t important enough to cost McCain even one vote.

I have a question aboust questions –
Does it appear to anyone else that each interview that has been done with SP they ask the same questions and I know they get the same answers – which are really non answers – why do these journalists not follow up or ask for specifics about her answers, who do we think should interview her to get a better, clearer picture? Do you think she ‘vets’ the questions before hand on any interview and will she just refuse to be interviewed by anyone she doesn’t care for? I think I know the answers, but I am jsut so tired of heaps of non interviews. Ishe won’t answer or jsut give the same answer why doesn’t the media jsut ignore her. It all seems so pointless.

Scotsgirl – I was just thinking the same thing. Two people I would like to see interview Sarah Palin – Rachel Maddow and Michael Parkinson (do you see him in the States?).

He used to be on BBCAmerica I think, although not recently. I don’t know that he’d be in depth enough – how about Jeremy Paxman! Now that would be worth seeing!

Retribution?: If anything happens to Barack, Lady Liberty would cry as this nation would then slide into almost certain cival war. Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Rielly, Ingrahams would have no place to hide. Arrested, tried for treason and hate crimes, and again, Good WILL WIN OVER EVIL.
just sayin too…

Hey Brit –

It’s been difficult the last couple of days to be with you guys cause hubby has had a 4-day holiday and has been demanding my attention and this afternoon finally attacked my time spent with my friends here. So walk the dog in the morning, lunch at noon, walk with hubby in the afternoon, dinner then a weird Russian sci fi flick on tv with him. Gotta keep the poor man entertained or he cuts off my computer rights! He just went off to bed and tsk tsked my sitting down at my computer!

You know, I haven’t ridden in my bro’s humbug yet but Simon did this summer and said it was cool. Everyone in town knows the car. My bro works at General Electric and everytime I meet someone who works there and I ask if they know my bro, they think a minute then say “Oh, the one that drives the Humbug?” Yeah!

Shikago – I have thought that the right wing nutjobs ought to stop and think for a few minutes before they carry on with their anti Obama vitriol i.e Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Rielly, Ingrahams et al.

There will be some very pissed off, not to mention rich and powerful people who would be very, very angry should anything happen to him, and I mean anything, even a solid threat.

The nutjobs would be their first port of call in any retribution.

Just sayin!

The US would be a WAR ZONE!!!!

I’m just sayin….they do not want to go there!!! They really don’t!!! The scums of the earth will not be able to hide!!!

In all my life…I’ve never understood how this much hate can reside in a person! To take a life for a stupid reason is beyond my thinking…for any reason for that matter. Unless it is a life or death situation!

UK Lady,
Am liking the idea of Paxman.
You would have to scrape her off the floor after he was finished.

Happy Veteran’s Day! Here’s a video entitled “My dogs greeting me after returning from 14 months in Iraq”.

May we all, humans and dogs alike, never forget our vets.

AKM – 3-4 weeks ago I saw a writer from the Village Voice on TV talking about the Palins new house and how it’s construction ran parallel with the ‘Rink’.According to his info – all of the parties working on the rink……you guessed it……..worked on the house . Also during this time- Poodle did not have to pull permits – because of a new ordinance she rammed through. As in previous posts – I also noticed the “commercial grade” kitchen. Also the grab rails on the balcony I’m sure match the ones in the “Rink” One of the first interviews with Todd – he said “construction buddies”….now its “architect buddies” …….. so Dude……..which is it???

So, of all the cable news drivel I have subjected myself to on this big SP news day one thing popped out and has burned a place in my head. When a GOP strategist (not sure who since I was in another room) was asked about Palin 2012 he immediately said “well, she needs to be RE-ELECTED as Governor first…then partyline blah blah”. Exactly!!! So let’s make sure that does not happen. Starting right now, we should be helping find a strong candidate and get the ground work started now, just like the Obama campaign did two years ago. Terry McAuff… is already putting his team together for Virginia’s Gov position. What do you think mudpals? Maybe Gov. Gara (sp?)? I will put my money and time where my mouth is on this one if our Alaskan pals take the lead. I think we have plenty of ammo to start with…..😉

Fellow builders / architects:

I’ve been waiting to see detail pix of the Palin’s quadruple-wide… finally the kitchen interview, and a lot of shots of the stair-rail and balcony-rail that sure do NOT look like my local HOME DEPOT! Anyone seen the protection rails in the ‘Arena’?
————————————————————-
It was the stair-rail that got me, too. It’s wrong, wrong, wrong for a family home.

I don’t know if this has been posted, but I just read about a national protest against the passage of Proposition 8 being scheduled for Nov. 15. Check out the link:
