Bedtime in Alaska – Open Thread

9 11 2008

Off to bed early (for me)!

With over 823,000 views on YouTube, I must be the last one to know about this great Dr. Seuss style story of John McCain and Sarah Palin.  I’m several days late and a whole lot short, but this is so good, I don’t care.  It’s a good bedtime story, especially now that we know the ending!

Brilliant.

I leave it to you night owls, and other continentals!  Good night!

Thanks asiangrrl for letting us know…

I don’t have video on my rebooted bum computer, so I have to wait to watch it until later on somebody else’s. But thanks for the link. AKM and all the other muddies have been my source for almost everything!

Yes, this may have been posted before, but since there are muddies all over the world who log on at different times, we don’t always have the time or patience to go back and skim the hundreds of posts that have been added while we have been catching up on our post-election sleep. We appreciate everyone who reposts interesting, fun or important things on different threads.

Good night, AKM, and sweet dreams.

From the last thread.

Hick Town in W PA, I also read that many of the execs are salting away millions of ‘their’ money, claiming that it’s not the money given to them by the feds. Apparently, there’s a loophole in the bailout that allows them to do this.

I say, throw them all in jail. It’s outrageous and sickening. Have they no shame?

Bob Shrum admitted recently wishing they had Biden in 2000 and 2004 given that Lieberman and Edwards were impotent on the trail, no backup for the POTUS candidates, and ineffective with Cheney. Our fair state continues to have protests agains Prop 8, especially as most of us feel the constitution should not be able to be changed by voters. Arnie is more articulate about it now. I donate what I can…I believe lawsuits are next.

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/11/10/schwarzenegger_proposition_8_fight_isnt_over/

Schwarzenegger: Proposition 8 fight isn’t over
SACRAMENTO – As protesters took to the streets for a fifth day, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday expressed hope that the California Supreme Court would overturn Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that outlawed same-sex marriage.

In an interview with CNN, Schwarzenegger also predicted that the 18,000 gay and lesbian couples who have wed already would not see their marriages nullified by the initiative.

“It’s unfortunate, obviously, but it’s not the end,” he said about the same-sex marriage ban. “I think that we will again maybe undo that, if the court is willing to do that, and then move forward from there and again lead in that area.”

I know it’s not just me, but it seems that the “base” is the group that gets screwed by the repugs, yet they worship the hoodlums. From taxes to this..big business over middleclass Americans. I can’t get it.

@ Sparky
I don’t get it either, but I suspect it is realated to poor education and a lack of critical thinking. Could Joe the plumber really describe what socialism is and why he thinks he would be “worse off” in a socialist state than a purely capitalist one? (Given that he’s received welfare twice I think he’d be surprised by what he found out if he bothered to look).

They are victims of the rabble rousing mentality that encourages people NOT to think. Just listen to us, vote for us and you’ll be better off than you would be with “them” (subtext, we know what’s best for you, so it saves you the effort of sorting out the issues for yourself, don’t worry your brain cells).

I can’t really comment, not being an American, but I suspect there’s an element of the “American Dream” in there too. If you also really want to be part of big business, have a trophy wife, drive a gas guzzler and not need to worry about paying the bills, perhaps you are going to look to the people who’ve achieved it for guidance and role models. Isn’t your society built on the ideal that “If I can, so can you”…

There’s also interesting research that’s shown that those on the right of the political spectrum feel fear more intensely than those on the left (“clinging to guns and religion”), which may make them more susceptible to simple, reassuring rhetoric as a means of making them feel less threatened – it may also explain the horrifying responses to the McCain/Palin rhetoric on the campaign trail. If you are not frightened of the “other”, you rarely feel the need to kill or denegrate it, and are more likely to try to engage in reasoned debate.

Okay, enough for now…

Sparky, Brit, if you get a chance, read two books by Thomas Frank (no, not the general). “What’s The Matter with Kansas,” and “The Wrecking Crew.”

I too always wondered how the Repugs got the “low information voters” to vote their way. These two books go a long way to explain how they get these folks to vote against their own economic self interest.

Hopefully, the worm has turned, at least a little. IMHO, for the longest time, the D’s were afraid because they thought the R’s had highjacked “God,” and critiquing someone’s religious beliefs seemed wrong somehow.

FINALLY people of more mainstream religions (“traditional” Protestant, Jewish, Catholic, etc) decided to speak out and tell the fundementalists and evangelicals they didn’t have a lock on belief, so kindly keep their opinions to themselves.

Just wrote a sort-of tongue-in-cheek post on my blog about this: the key to the left’s success is to, basically, join the red voting blocks and turn ’em blue. In other words, move to red states and join churches there.

So….how’s Kentucky lookin’, real estate-wise?🙂

Thank you both, Mudpups. What you say, even in this short format, makes sense. Yes, fear, religion, the American dream…how these things can be tools or rather weapons to rule and control persons. “What’s the matter with Kansas” sounds intriguing; I have to admit, I’ve said those actual word out loud🙂 so I’m sure I’m not alone.

My great hope is for Obama, his administration (I think he chooses wisely) and the rest of us. I’m ready, and I don’t feel alone.

What continues to boggle my mind is that Alaska not only elected her but then gave her the “most loved governor” title.

I am hoping that having a spotlight shined on her will open some Alaskan eyes and invoke action. I know the whole state is kinda “mavericky” and hate the lower 48 telling them what to do so do it for Alaska. This grifter/con-artist needs to be nipped at the bud.

Lucky for Alaska, Barack Obama is a reasonable man. If I were in his position I would totally make Sarah squirm for all the lies she told about him. Alaska wouldn’t see one more federal dime.

Grammy, thanks for that link!

So apparently, according to that ADN interview, Palin was not even aware of the protests in Anchorage until after they had happened, and she doesn’t seem to have a feel for the scale of them. It sounds to me like another protest is called for, now that she is back home in AK and can witness it firsthand!

I don’t think I’ll feel relief for my Palin-induced anxiety until she is impeached and/or imprisoned. She is such a frightening prospect and I fear that she’ll somehow be able to make a successful run for a federal office at some point in the future. Is anybody else out there suffering from Palin Anxiety Syndrome?

Just read about Ms. Makeba. We will miss her, thankfully much of her music and spirit is still with us.

Hello, all, been reading but not posting for a few days. ‘The Vet Who Did Not Vet’ is indeed awesome. However I reject a couple of things, one that people need to ‘move on’ from Troopergate and analysis of Sarah Palin’s record. If she is to be foisted on us again in 2012, we are going to keep tabs on her and AKM I know will keep telling the real story. Plus it seems there are discrepancies in the testimony between the two investigations, and if this is the case, that might be perjury.

Bill Kristol, yes, still writing in the NYT, chooses to write about the dog this morning, and he and the other GOP folks are pushing the meme ‘this is not a center-left country, it is still a center-right country.’ I think he and others feel if they say it enough, it will be true. I offer my counter-meme, that things have shifted to the left, and that so many progressive ideas have been validated by this election that there has been a big change. But then he drags the dog into it….

…Read it for yourselves. My view is if we’re not careful, because progressives tend to be courteous of all view points, these boneheads will once again decide the discourse in our country. The view of Democrats as tax and spend, all talk and no action, etc. etc. etc. no longer works. We have been bringing ideas down the pipeline for some time now, and this is the time to work and bring them about.

Kristol, well, karma is a terrible thing.

I’ve been thinking the two best things about the Obama presidency are:

1) Return of competence to government — regardless of whether you believe in the policies or not; and
2) The end of the basic fear that the elected government is actively working to subvert the Constitution and change democracy into dictatorship.

That’s why the whole “pallin’ around with terrorists” fearmongering crud was so laughable — the right was trying to get America afraid of Obama for threatening the American way of life — *but that was the very thing their brand has been associated with for the last eight years*.

Whoopsie.

She needs to be held accountable, but I doubt her little groupies will ever see her true colors.

I’d love to listen in on her brain.

Palin will do an interview with Matt Lauer sometime today Nov. 10,2008…will probably see it on the net later.
Wonder if hard question will be asked and if any follow up questions.

No follow up questions it what allows her to get away with misinformation she spews and leads her base to believe what she says.
Someone needs to call her on the lies(even small ones) so everyone can see the real Sarah.

If she were to run in 2012, the primary debates will eat her alive.

Our great former governor of FLA and US Senator did something extraordinary : during his tenure as Gov he worked 99 full, 8-hour work days in different professions so he could see what his constituents lived through.
While in the Fla state senate and sitting on the education board, he taught one semester of civics at a high school in Miami. following this experience, and while Governor of Florida…
“he performed 99 additional workdays just in time for his 1986 successful campaign for U.S. Senate. Since then, he has completed 386 workdays. Graham has continued doing workdays throughout his tenure as governor and in the United States Senate. His jobs have included service as a police officer, busboy, railroad engineer, construction worker, fisherman, garbageman, factory worker, and teacher. On No. 365, he checked in customers, handled baggage and helped serve passengers on US Airways.”

That is a truly great politician.

Alaska is really different. Both times I came back it was a total culture shock. There are areas so remote my brain just couldn’t grasp it. Where I was at, it was impossible to stay up on current events like I would have back home.
When you are so remote, it takes three days to get to a doctor, your priorities shift to a mode totally different from the lower 48.
Things move at a different pace outside the cities.
My point was simply that everything I learned about SP originated here at the flats. I think AKM changed the course of the bullet for a lot of us. That’s all.

That should be a pre-requisite to running for office, that is awesome!

Laura Bush is supposedly a bright, sensible and kind person who basically refused to get involved or offer advice to hubby for the entire 8 years.

I’ll bet she voted Obama!

I am confused – I read that Arnie wants Prop 8 overturned and all gays who have married to always be considered married. Did he stand up against prop 8 running up to voting? Did he speak about it?

AKM: Apologies for such a long comment. Your blog has attracted world-wide readers (some only lurk). Please use your new-found clout to bring national attention to these insidious, stealthy, anti-American efforts to undermine our Constitutional Establishment Clause. ~ Thank you!
————————————————–
Didn’t realize a new thread had begun. Oops…

Aussie Blue Sky: Thanks for the sticker link – I got mine!

Jamie in France: First? smick! smick! (mini-smacks from those who are out-jostled… or can’t chuckle on/offline)

Who’s on First: People just go with the flow & don’t look under the bed – because they’ve not been there before. That, more than any other reason, is why we ended up with Bush for 8 yr. & a Justice Dept. full of religious fanatics from Oral Roberts U. Obama’s first act (hopefully) is to clean house in the DOJ!!

Challenge to Alaskans: Palin is NOT dumb – don’t make that mistake! She’s been on this political trajectory for years. Look under the bed & you will find how Palin became mayor & governor. When 40% of voters come from fundie & like organizations, they can easily fill all local boards & governmental.

Believe me, by the end of Sunday (reading ALL day!) – I am now afraid – VERY afraid! As a crusty old retired attorney, I don’t scare easily but neither was I an aware citizen despite being a newsjunkie. The success – in Alaska alone – of Wagner’s New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) infiltration of those “7-M” key areas of society is profound.

I began reading various about Palin on Talk2Action, which has quite a few (”Links to Information and Documentaries on Palin’s Churches”).

Links to “umbrella” political organizations will be posted separately so everyone can get the same thrill of having your skin crawl & hair stand up on the back of your necks.

Most of us have been CLUELESS! From all my reading these groups are the most anti-American I have ever read about. Consider the KS, PA, & TX School Boards the tip of this huge iceberg across the nation.

Alaskans: Palin got this far because she’s backed by the Assemblies of God & fundamentalist religious organizations, groups that also have collective economic clout; and she will continue to have their support. It will take a major effort by AK organizations collectively to “bust em’ up” by copying & mimicing their tactics.

According to Michael L. Weinstein, USAF/JAG, they have infiltrated our US Military – estimated at 40% – at the highest officer levels. As an officer & Republican, he has tried to “bust em’ up” using the USMC & so far failed. Now he is waging a one-man war, but could use some citizen help. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Weinstein

Mudpuppies, my apologies for comments that are likely WAY too serious for most puppies here. Humor isn’t my forte (?,?)

Political Power of the NEW Religious Right is extensive & THEY think everyone else is on a path to treason…

The organizations below serve as political “umbrellas” – well-connected in all states & our federal government.

Council for National Policy (CNP)
Committee on the Present Danger (CPTS)
Coalition for Peace Through Strength (CPTS)
American Security Council (ASC)

CNP is a member of the CPTS, which (with current conservatives in Congress as members) serves as the “umbrella” for the New Right – a mix of neoconservatives, DOD brass & its major industrial contractors. CPTS is the public face of ASC, which has reinvented itself with each new national threat since the ’50’s when it was established to ferret out “internal subversives” – terrorists & communists (McCarthy anyone?).

The New Right’s foreign policy is based on “interventionism” – as opposed to the Old Right’s non-interventionism policy.

Wikipedia is a good source:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_on_the_Present_Danger

The Nation Blog on Council for National Policy:

They have been busy little bees since Reagan’s time… hating to lose, they love the stimulation. Since the mid-90’s these groups have been looking for a “Reagan” icon (Bush is a disappointment) & their “true believers” believe in their new-found modern icon – SARAH!

Follow Obama’s example – feel the multitude hoof beats of the unseen & unheard herds & do not feed the “beast” by falling into their traps!

Joe the LOSER Plumber was in NYC this weekend partying! He hit the 40/40 club and Live Bait. He was in town as a guest of Mike Huckabee for Faux News. This guy made a deal with the devil and I hope he pays for it. Obama, go after him HARD for the taxes he owes, and scrutinize the shit out of him.

I’ve been waiting for an open thread to ask this question:

How soon should my OBAMA-Biden yard sign be taken down?

After inauguration? Next election? The McCain-Palin sign, 2 yards away, went down on the 5th. But this is different!

I’ve never had a WINNER’s sign in my yard, before, so I don’t know how to act. The neighbor’s is still up and I’m not planning to move mine anytime soon. The little metal legs are rusting at a phenomenal rate, so it is inevitable–but WHEN?????

Do you check out Andrew Sullivan’s blog? He addresses the Arnold issue off & on… He’s on the main page right now, and has some very good stuff in his old posts. If you’ve not made him a regular stop, you should.

Do NOT apologize for bringing us serious news! We need to keep this stuff in mind; the tide ebbs and flows, but the fundies will NOT give up. This is important information.

Humor is a tool for coping. We need it here, too.

Is it possible that Todd & Sarah can be prosecuted for Housegate? The 300K value (or so) of the (admittedly alleged) contractors work would be taxable, and thus qualify as unreported income on the Federal tax return. The house was built back in 1996 (if I remember) but I don’t think a statue of limitations applies to unreported income.

Brilliant, AKM. I hadn’t seen this “story” – and I’m glad I didn’t miss it. One of fthe best of the campaign.
