yawn…..Good night all.

Moose update! I did see Brenda the moose hanging out in the neighbor’s yard as I drove in from a meeting this evening. She was standing right by the edge of the road and didn’t seem bothered by me as I drove by. Too dark to get a picture, unfortunately. But she looks well and healthy, with a very shiny coat…for a moose.

See you in the morning!

No moose here this am (visiting elderly parents in NH), but the dogs just got me up at oh-my-god in the morning, and it’s still weirdly warm, foggy, and just the first hint of daylight. Great skunk time, though none found this day, thanks. It’s great to be able to breathe and appreciate the things we’ve been pushing aside these last days and weeks. Hi to Brenda, and all her ilk… and greetings to mudpuppies all around.

Can’t believe it – just happened to wake up for work, clicked on Mudflats, and it said “No Comments”.

Kind of like winning at a slot machine – so many times someone will be walking through a casino, and out of the blue stop at a machine and throw some money in, and hit the jackpot – just a matter of being in the right place at the right time !

I’m here too! It’s raining outside here in Nantes, but still oh so sunny inside!

I wish I could see a real live moose in my lifetime! Several years ago the Canadian Tourist Board did a really big campaign to get French people to come visit Canada. The big pull? The whales and the moose (meese)! Boy, it really did make one want to go!

Just bought post-election Time and Newsweek, both special issues with beautiful photo spreads. And Courrier International which had the most beautiful photo of Barack on the cover.

http://www.courrierinternational.com/gabarits/html/default_online.asp

The cover is on the right with the photo of barack that says YES!

End the End Times

Yes, Barack Obama is a very happy topic. So great to see his beautific face and to think we’ll be seeing much more of it.

Since I’m (still) getting to sleep soon..

A topic that was in the Juneau (cough, cough,..) Empire:

An add was taken out about new game board topics such as airborne hunting of bears, and “denning” of baby animals (killing them). I think it also said they might legalize the selling of bear parts. Looks like things are getting even more freaky in Alaska. I’m too tired to go into all of this right now, but I do hope that people (esp. in Alaska) with more knowledge about this will fill us in. My beloved home of many decades seems to be diving into “turd world” status. Young people who can brave the cold are needed to move here and change our demographics (sorry, housing is scarce and not that great, so it’s probably a better challenge for the young. And it is expensive to live here.

Help change this DF haunting into the land of 21st century lovies. Night.

To the posters – my recent comments regarding the posts in re to Palin’s kids – some of you felt that I was wrong to comment on what I felt were unwarranted posts about Palin’s kids – As a minister’s/professor’s kid, I know what it means to have a million eyes watching and dissecting your every move, article of clothing, even your grades. It ain’t fun. Like PKs, a politician’s kids have no real say in their parents career choices – you’re just thrust into a spotlight – aware that you are under a microscope and it matters not what you do or say, someone is going to use it against your parent. I am more than happy to point out Palin’s sterling disqualifications for anything other than Mayor of Wasilla. . . and uphold the belief that Todd Palin is likely more dangerous than Cheney – Cheney at least was a blip on the radar. That said, however, I still believe that the kids of the candidates should be totally off limits to the constant parsing and dissembling to which their parents are subjected. As for Palin’s “mothering” of Trig – I choose to have no opinion other than I hope Trig survives it.

I’m wondering about the optimism over Begich when it seems there have been shenanigans so far – particularly the Obama/McCain numbers not varying by more than a few tenths of a percent all evening, no matter where the votes were coming from.

Isn’t anybody looking into this? Are the Dems simply waiting until Stevens wins the remaining votes so there’s a case to be made?

re kem hussein (22:35:15) from the last thread

I live in Western Washington and the front page of the local newspaper in Lewis County (the red streak on the blue side of the mountains) only mentioned “Obama wins election” in a small font above the name of the paper…like a teaser. They included three pennies with BO’s likeness and the bigger words “change”. All this above the banner. The “story” was on the back of the sports page. A nice insert in the paper, however, told us all about the joys of squash.

Go to http://www.newseum.org and check out the “Today’s Front Pages” on the right. Go to archives, and check out the 740 front pages from around the world for November 5th. Inspiring. Mudflatter Teachers- there are some real good lesson plan opportunities using this in comparison with local coverage and election data results from the newspaper’s coverage area.

Our local paper really missed an opportunity to make some extra money selling papers people would want to save. Though, I am sure had McCain won, our paper would have changed their “local news” mantra.

I wonder what Nancy Reagan said during Obama’s phone call??? (I remember reading that McCain was banned from the White House by Nancy b’cuz he so coldly abandoned his wife Carol for the beauty queen):

Obama told reporters that he has turned for advice to all “living” former presidents. But he then joked, “I didn’t want to get into a Nancy Reagan thing about, you know, doing any seances.”

The former first lady actually has not been linked to conversations with the dead. President Reagan’s former chief of staff, Donald Regan, did write that she set her husband’s schedule with the help of an astrologist.

Obama called Mrs. Reagan late Friday to apologize.

Palin: “So if there’s criticism that all of a sudden I’ve changed and become an obsessive partisan, then it’s not accurate criticism.”

Please, don’t judge this woman on her own actions, words or behavior. Just because she spewed hate, caused an increase in death threats to Obama with her irresponsible diatribe, and acted totally classless, is no reason to label her a partisan. That’s not an accurate criticism.

Palin will explain to you what to believe. Don’t go off thinking you’re going to make up your own mind.

Her speeches are full of examples of revisionist history. What about Troopergate (or Tasergate to her highness): “I am so pleased to be cleared of even a hint of unethical or illegal…”

If you need to know something, just ask Palin. No thinking required on your part.

Maybe Obama has a spot for Caribou Barbi. He could make her the Ambassador to Naura. It is a country in the Pacific with landmass of 8.5 miles. Since their phosphate deposits are running out they are in a crisis and starvation is looming on the horizon if they don’t get help. This would be just right for Sarah with her extensive executive experience.

BTW: Caribou Barbi said in an interview in her Alaska office that those who are deriding her are “jerks ” If taking exception to your stupid comments, lack of knowledge of geography, lack of knowledge of the office to which you aspired, looting of the RNC treasury, the lies and attempts to inject hate and racism into your campaign rallys and the “towel incident” which demonstrated your total lack of class make people jerks, I proudly proclaim myself a “jerk” and will wear the title with pride.

@Bev :
I haven’t followed and don’t know the comments refered to, but I don’t think people talked about Palin’s kids in any terms other than as a reflection of her evangelical beliefs, her parenting skills or the platform (abstinence teaching, etc) she was running on. I think that is only fair. I remember Reagan running on the “Family Values” plaform as if he invented it, but who ever spoke of his divorce and leaving Jane Wyman for Nancy, his estrangement from his kids from first marriage or his disagreements with his younger kids and their “wild” behavior? I think the fact that the Repubs run on the Family Value ticket and they are represented by Palin (pregnant unmarried teen daughter, drop out son, treating her infant like a sack of potatoes and parading her kids out as political props and nothing more) and Mccain (first wife dumped for Cindy) when next to them you have Barack Obama and Joe Biden – well, I think those things NEED to come up!

Calling her critics cowards and jerks, Palin says:

“If there are allegations based on questions or comments that I made in debate prep about NAFTA, and about the continent vs. the country when we talk about Africa there, then those were taken out of context, ….”

Sarah, you’ve done it again: “the continent vs. the country when we talk about Africa there”. Listen carefully, there isn’t Africa a continent that can be compared with Africa a country. Go look at the map. All these different colored pretty shapes making up Africa are countries in the continent of Africa. Take you’re time. It’ll come to you sooner or later.

Caribou Barbi says that she is being unfairly criticized by the media and her MCain enemies. Maybe I should reexamine my opinion of her.

1. She has a degree in journalism which teaches communication. Apparently she didn’t absorb all that was taught.

2. Against overwhelming evidence, she believes that man and dinosaurs walked the earth at the same time and that the earth is only 6000 years old.

3. Apparently she believes in witchcraft as she allowed a minister to pray for her protection from witchcraft.

4. When elected Mayor of Wasilla she spent $50,000 to remodel the Mayor’s office. When told that this was illegal she replied, “I’m the Mayor. I’ll do what I want.”

5. As Mayor of Wasilla the job was so strenuous that she had to hire a city manager at $50,000 per year

6. As governor she charged the state for questionable expenses for travel, per deim and other expenses.

7. Once in office she awarded jobs to her friends and supporters without regard to their qualifications for the positions.

8. When offered the post of VP nominee she accepted even though she knew that she was not qualified for the job and had limited knowledge of what a VP does.

9. After her elevation to VP nominee her ego allowed her to assume that the rules didn’t apply to her and that she was entitled to certain perks that ordinary people didn’t have.

Hmmm. After reviewing what we have had in the Oval Office for the last 8 years I might be wrong about her as she seems to be a continuation of the present administration.

My heart goes out to you for your losses. My grandmother lost both of her children at early ages, and she said there was nothing worse for a parent-

Bev-
I understand you point completely. I read more of the campaign coverage in Newsweek, and I realized that I admired how Obama treated his family influenced my vote for him, contrasted with the Palin family dynamics (how hypocritical given her Dark Freak background)- I or any other mudflatters will never be able to influence how the Palin’s relate, so I prefer to focus on our new First Family.

BTW- from the last thread, I think you can read the whole account on Newsweek online.

Proud Community Organizer-

The CO River Compact was updated 1-2 years ago by the headwater states (mostly); I don’t think they tackled run off. If I remember correctly, it was focused on usage: AZ and NV were using more of their share, mainly due to lack of storage in the headwater states for their shares. The did begin to tackle the amount that needed to go on to Mexico-

The revisions were due to the prolonged drought in the Rocky Mountains, and resultant decrease in water in the Colorado River. This was one case when the Federal govt. did good- the states were threatened with penalties if they didn’t begin to work on this issue.

I agree with Jamie!

Further, Palin chose to make her children a part of this campaign.

Why, on earth, when faced with rumors about Trig, did Palin throw Bristol to the wolves? Why, oh, why, didn’t she asked her doctor or someone else from the hospital make a statement to vouch that Trig was her child? She, in effect, hoisted her unwed, teen daughter onto the world stage for scrutiny.

Why did expose Piper to a crowd of boos at the Flyer’s game? She said it. She was hoping to decrease the booing that she knew she would encounter.

On Palin’s motherhood: Why did she send Bristol to live with her sister last year? Why did she send Track to live in Michigan during high school?

I feel for her children, but she is not an example of family values, IMO.

Hi mudpuppies..

Lots of chat about Barbie’s kids.

Here’s my take on it.

Sadly, Barbie and Dud made the decision to make them targets. While it could be argued that kids should be considered off-limits, while they themselves are indeed innocent of any wrong-doing, the fact that Mommy Dearest and Daddy due chose to make them such public figures, by default, the actions of the kids is reflected on the parents and that is not off-limits in my opinion.

When Barbie totes Trig around with less caring than one would give a strangers pet, it’s news, fair or not, it’s a valid attacking point. Carrying him over an arm, face down, with no ability to complain, even if the little guy is terrified, shows a complete and total disconnect and dispassionate obscenity towards her ‘child’. Trig certainly hasn’t ever gotten any public mistreatment, if anything, it’s the reverse. Millions of comments from moms, dads, and even parents of Downs children who completely understand what’s going on. They see so little parenting skills, it’s not innapropriate to discuss publically.

It’s obvious that Barbie doesn’t care, it’s all about where you’re going, and Barbie wants to go to Washington. And if Trig touches a cord, use and exploit it for all your worth. If she gets to Washington, hire a nanny, and visit him weekly, and she’ll be doing her mommy duty.

Her other kids? Props or simply not important. And geeze, they have adorable kids, but they make them simply a Shakespearean anecdote that we’re all merely players. The kids having to endure booing she KNEW in advance would happen is simply inexcusable. She allowed them to have people boo them, and how horridly will it affect the psyche and mental development of kids to think they’re hated by thousands of people? Years of therapy ahead for them.

Track and Bristol hidden away, for what reasons? Clearly, Barbie does nothing that’s not fully calculated. While she’s not very smart on most any topic, she seems to have a Ph.D in political scheming, so assume it’s fair to say whatever she’s doing with her children, it’s all planned out.

Eventually, we’ll get tired of the Palin family, but sadly, the kids are stuck there, forever attached to the worst political candidate to ever run for office in America. Makes ya wonder if the AIP won’t be even more alluring for them now. America already hates us, they’ll think. Why stay in a country they’re hated in?? Sad. Very sad and Barbie and Dud are the co-conspirators that caused this.

Thanks for keeping up the drumbeat on the moose and the elections returns for Alaska, AKM. I hope folks are confident that things are being handled in an ethical manner and Begich wins. And then DOESN’T. SCREW. UP.

My very deep sympathies to those who have lost children. That is an almost incomprehensible pain to walk around with your whole life. Thanks for sharing that.

I think we are in a different mode, after the euphoria of the campaign, a ‘constant vigilance’ mode. I know over in the Forum AKM has commented that she will not say anything about the Palin kids because they are minors, and I respect that, it is what I would want if it were my kids up there. However that horse is out of the barn, largely because of the Palins themselves. They are media figures in their own right, they travel around on the state of Alaksa’s nickel, and they an integral and constantly promoted part of Gov. Palin’s resume, so I guess in my mind I keep tabs on them. There is no easy answer about how to shield kids in the Internet/media environment these days. The Obamas struggle with it, too.

I think a lot of us just want to know the truth, however gray and ugly it might be, and the Internet has given us more of a chance to really get the good information. If there is hypocrisy in our leaders, especially after the past 8 years, we want to know about it. But at the same time they are human. So I just kind of hold it there in my mind. That said, I will not accept the revisionist history that is going on now, the source for much of which is Gov. Palin herself.

Many of the things we have questions about will be resolved in a longer-term time frame. I am very interested in Lieberman’s situation and how the new government will form. I rely on this blog to keep me informed about events on the ground in AK, and I am looking for a similar kind of forum for my home state of MN. If there isn’t one, maybe there should be, other MN folks might agree with me.

I am also trying to read as many sources as I can about the GOP and just what they think a good governing strategy might be. So far they are just talking about the demographics they have lost, not the bankruptcy (at all levels) of the Bush administration and the current incarnation of the GOP. What I find is that they still just don’t get it, and that is why I am a liberal/progressive with fiscal conservative tendencies, not the other way around. I think that is an unbeatable combination and that is what I see in the emerging Obama administration.

So we move forward. Check out Judith Warner’s article, ‘Tears to Remember,’ in the NYT and the comments, this sums it up for me. Great comments, too, from all over the world.

http://warner.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/06/title/?em

And yes, let’s continue the vigilance with Bush & Co. so there is no more hanky-panky until January 20th! Sending the Obamas energy, too.

I only wish that we could gift that woman with a dose of reality, but I don’t think anything would touch her. I expect that she will continue to amuse us, until she gets the urge to move up, again. And I do hope that all of us will keep a careful watch for when she decides to bust out onto the national scene, again. As some have hinted, I do see the potential for a Hitler-like grab for power and a lot of the same ideas, just implemented differently: keep the disabled, incarcerate the gays, Muslims, liberals, “witches” (wonder who those will be?), pro-choicers, everyone with AIDS,

If you guys haven’t played with the “electoral porn” (so-called by Wonkette) NYT map, it’s VERY interesting and informative.

You can zoom in on your state and see how each county voted. But the two most interesting features, IMO, are the “County bubbles” and “Voting shifts” tabs on the left of the map.

With “County bubbles”, you can see where the population is distributed throughout the country. Really looks different that having the whole state colored in. The “Voting shifts” proves that, whatever Frau Dictator Palin may want to believe, we are mostly becoming a more DEMOCRATIC country!

As easy a target as SP is and as much fun to dis, there’s a potential danger in our continuing to do so. We dodged the bullet this time, and there’s plenty of evidence to use should she decide to rejoin the national scene. But I wonder whether we may be unintentionally giving her more attention (and potential power) than she deserves by our continued fascination with her.

The Repubs are currently engaged in a civil war for the future of their party. Their long knives are out and sharpened. That meeting the other night at Brian Bozell’s place seems to have been limited to representatives of the anti-government (drown it in a bathtub) and social conservative wing. I saw no mention of any of the moderates or the intellectual conservatives, many of whom ended up endorsing Obama. So, perhaps David Brooks is correct that the party will continue to lurch to the right. The NYT trends map clearly shows that the only GOP gains were confined to a fairly small region of the country, plus small gains in McCain’s home state. Should the GOP decide to go more conservative, they’ll truly be a small, regional, marginalized party. And SP will not be one to have to worry about. If, on the other hand, the adults retake control, SP won’t have a chance to be the party’s standard-bearer as they are the ones currently tearing her down.

I’m for letting them fight it out and not provide them with any ammo to justify their bigotry and sense of victimization.

I’d like to suggest that we keep an eye on her, but limit discussion. AKM keeps the trolls from joining the discussion, but they’re free to read, and to pass on our comments to like-minded others. That just gives SP more power among them.

I’m sure that AKM will continue to monitor any further “gates” and to keep us informed. And then we can put our energy and our feelings for SP to good use by supporting those fine folks up in Alaska in their efforts to hold her to account. But in the meantime, let’s use all our wonderful energy to do things like trying to stop the uranium mining — or at least to get the word out — or to help our wonderful President-elect by trying to help him reach those who are still not convinced. Let’s not forget that both he and Joe almost completely ignored SP during the campaign. Their silence was deafening!

Left-Eyed Jack has a thoughtful post on the topic. http://lefteyeonthemedia.wordpress.com

This has become such a great group of virtual friends. We’ve accomplished much as I really think we made a difference by pressuring for release of the Branchflower report and perhaps even the second one. And, thanks to AKM. we learned more about both SP and John McCain (at least about his judgement) than we might have otherwise and were able to speak authoritatively to others about them.

Brickbats are welcome amongst friends…

Hey, what does GOP stand for now? We need some talented folks to redo those initials = I mean look at the results of the latets poll this has got to be the party of the politically retarded. Imean, Palin is far and away their fist choice for 2012! Geeeeeeeessssh!

“Rasmussen Reports, in a new poll published Friday, has some interesting data on how Republicans still have overwhelming positive feelings about Palin:

“Ninety-one percent (91%) of Republicans have a favorable view of Palin, including 65% who say their view is Very Favorable. Only eight percent (8%) have an unfavorable view of her, including three percent (3%) Very Unfavorable.”

” When asked to choose among some of the GOP’s top names for their choice for the party’s 2012 presidential nominee, 64% say Palin. The next closest contenders are two former governors and unsuccessful challengers for the presidential nomination this year — Mike Huckabee of Arkansas with 12% support and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts with 11%.”

8 11 2008
Forty Watt Hussein

In the interests of reaching across the aisle or, in some instances, the chasm, I would like to offer something for the Republican party to chew on as they contemplate their future. In the words of Moshe Feldenkrais:

” I contend that rigidity, whether physical or mental…is contrary to the laws of life. For rigidity in [humans] cannot be obtained without suppressing
some activity for which he/she has the capacity…This suppression cannot be practiced with impunity for any length of time.”

Think the death of ideology; foster the ability to think multidimensionally; honestly face up to why the majority voted against you (hint: don’t concentrate on scape goats).

Remember the amoeba can choose between two ideas: go forward/go back, eat it/don’t eat it. The amoeba doesn’t have a brain. Let your working hypothesis be “we can do better than an amoeba.”

Years ago we caught up with old friends from ‘cruising the world days’ 20 + years ago. They had relocated in a very small village in SE Alaska hoping to raise their children in a more civilized, calm, reflective and even liberal, back to nature environment. There are actually a lot of those folks up there and else where in the bush in various parts of the world.
What they discovered having moved lock, stock, and barrel to this village was as our friend said, “that 1/2 the people here are convicted felons and the other 1/2 have run away from something, including us”. They have stayed raised the kids and are happy there but I think our friend’s comment may reflect the climate of the Stevens election.
And don’t forget Uncle Ted has brought home the bacon, literally for 40 years.

After I told him that he was more gullible than I had taken him for, he stopped writing. So I thought his cngrats was very big of him! Healing the wounds.

Um, OT:

This whole YES WE CAN thing is cutting into my habitual online time. Like many of you, I’m way behind on things that need doing around the house, and even though I’m trying really hard to perk myself in the right direction by telling the dog YES WE CAN!, here I sit again, reading comments and posting.

It ain’t gonna be easy, you know. Not on national level, and not as individuals. Humph. Especially in those many one-person households where the only supportive cheering comes from critters who don’t give a hoot whether or not you vacuum the floors. At that, the supportive cheering is for a paper towel cardboard roll tossed onto the messy floor for another half hour of excited play, not for a YES WE CAN attempt at cleaning things up.

I think I need to check out Obama’s website first, before attempting to clean house, for a good dose of determination. And then check back here to see if there’s anything that requires my attention.

OHHHHHHHHH BROTHER!!!! Somebody make me go and do what needs doing!!!

No wait. It’s Saturday. Almost the Day Of Rest. I’ll loaf and read today :o) Start Monday on determined housework catch-ups and all that. Yep, that’ll work.

That election map is fascinating. In MA, I thought our county (Hampshire) would come in before Berkshire, but they beat us in % for Obama. 72% vs 71%. Suffolk, that takes in Boston and surrounds, beat everybody, but Martha’s Vineyard came in second.

Thoughts on a rainy Saturday…

Shikago and Upnorth- your personal tragedies break my heart and bring me to a place that I’ve tucked away for many yrs- Thank you for sharing your lives with us here- This is a special place and the comfort level we have w/ each other is evident when people post a bit of their lives. I feel like we’re sitting around a virtual kitchen table sometimes- talking, commiserating, laughing, crying.

Jamie, Floridian in France and Reveur– in the 90’s I lived in Hobe Sound– my son was born at Martin Memorial- small world.

Since August 29th I haven’t read a thing- I’ve been absorbed in the news- online, this site, CNN, MSNBC, even Fox to see how they’re reporting things. I’m trying to get back into reading– you see I’m a librarian and I haven’t read a book in way too long! Here’s my plan– I just picked up Audacity of Hope by none other than Barack Obama so I can reread it. I thought a book by our Pres-Elect might get me to turn pages again. btw, this is an excellent way to get a deeper knowledge of our next Pres– I will suggest it to some of my friends who didn’t vote for him– maybe they’ll get a better feel of who this man is and what we all believe he is capable of accomplishing.

And thank you Jan in SW Washington for sharing newseum.org. A global perspective is of utmost importance in this day. Plus it puts a smile on my face to see the world celebrating!

(thank goodness for the “find” feature so I could go back and see how to spell all your names as I was writing this!)

Some years back we briefly had a governor in Arizona (we successfully impeached him after 16 months or so) who famously called his critics “homosexual agitators.” Evan Meacham flaunted his bigotry like the underschooled mormon car dealer he was. Windy, we don’t discuss the Palinettes.. we discuss how Barbie and Dud relate to those children. The kids themselves are indeed off-limits.. talking about a child would be wrong. But we discuss the kids only in terms of the adults who’ve used and exploited them. Never the kids themselves, so i don’t think we’re wrong in those discussions.

If Barbie was so worried about talk about her children, she shouldn’t have paraded them around like shiney trinkets emitted from her uterus. Note no one talks about Obama’s children. This article and thread focused some thinking for me. As a Boomer I always wondered why we failed so badly. One thing I do realize is that the Fundy leadership came out of this same era. This has been written about widely. In my own family I have cousins who were rescued from the drug scene by an extreme Fundy group (no doctors, dentists, desexualizing women, etc). They always vote Republican in VA. If your only hope is yourself or the end of the world, you are defeated before you begin. People need more.

Palin is a sort of logical end place of everything wrong with the country and the culmination of the Republican Party: the “me”, “me”, “me”; extreme anti-intellectualism; indifference to community; indifference to the next generation; cynical manipulation for short-term gains; using religion to further political power; lying with impunity. In some ways her popularity with this crowd is their just deserts. They deserve her. The last gasp of a party devoid of ideas, hope, and humanity. I know that folie a deux is a joint madness. A cult is a group madness. Where is the Republican Party going?

It has just struck me in this election cycle just ended, that most of the Republicans in know, no matter what their age, are in life just for themselves. I know of none of them – except very wealthy Repubs who have to make charitable donations to keep their taxes down – who either volunteer or contribute.

I talked about my crazy friend who said she was going to lose her house and end up in a women’s shelter under an Obama administration. We are both approaching retirement age and she was wondering what she would do with herself after retirement. I suggested that she would find herself a volunteer job, possibly in the local library. She was very forceful in saying to me: I WILL NEVER VOLUNTEER ANY PLACE!

I think I also wrote about the CFO of the place where I work who told me that he worked too hard for his money and he didn’t want it to be taken away and given to somebody else.

I don’t want to get this discussion rolling again, since so many didn’t care for it last thread. But I don’t want to be included in your “we”. Further, I don’t think “we” should come to any group decision since that would only isolate and not include dissenters. Everyone has a right to his/her view that doesn’t require correction by anyone else. Perhaps “correction” is too strong a word for your response to Windy City…but it did feel a bit like one to me. I just got this article in my imported print newspaper… I hope no one is offended by it, but I think Mudpuppies are openminded enough to hear this. It’s basically about the state of US education, anti-elitism, Christian fundamentalism and how they are intertwined. Monbiot, the author, is not shy about saying what he thinks, but he can always put together a good argument. It may explain why we shouldn’t be amazed at Palin coming from a family of teachers:

“A survey by researchers at the University of Texas in 1998 found that one in four of the state’s state school biology teachers believed humans and dinosaurs lived on earth at the same time.”

Great article with commentary by Jonathan Raban

“The best thing about living in the United States since Tuesday has been the gilt-edged assurance that, somewhere out there, very smart people are thinking and talking in a serious conversation from which narrow ideologues have been rigorously excluded.

We’ve elected as president someone who is empirical, cautious, conservative with a small “c”, yet unusually sure of his own judgment when he makes it, which is often slowly. He’s sure to disappoint those of his supporters who believe he can raise the dead, turn water into wine, and walk on water. But he has rescued the White House from the besotted rationalists of PNAC with their Platonist designs on the world, and restored it to the realm of common reason. It’s a measure of the madness of the last eight years that, for this seemingly modest contribution to the nation’s welfare (and not just this nation’s), grown men and women wept in gratitude on Tuesday night.”

Here’s a really informative piece on Rahm Emanuel.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122611134918910647.html

and below is my favorite paragraph… ( a dancer? really?…life is so good!)

Mr. Emanuel’s slight build and basset hound eyes belie the “Rahmbo” moniker that aggressive tactics have earned him over the years. So does his background. The lawmaker’s interests ran to ballet, not battleground states, while growing up on Chicago’s tony North Shore in the 1970s as the middle son of a pediatrician who emigrated from Israel. A dance prodigy, he was offered a scholarship with the Joffrey Ballet but settled for a liberal arts degree from Sarah Lawrence and a master’s in communications from Northwestern.

Susie in Jersey (10:00:56) I know exactly what you mean about the total disregard for the responsibilities of citizenship. That’s why I am in favor of moving them all to some undeveloped land in Utah (a state that would be totally unsympathetic) on undeveloped land with no police, hospitals, infrastructure, government, and only charities that are designed to showcase giving events for the wealthy. It would be interesting to see what they do with themselves in a few years.

In the early 70s there was a role playing game used in schools called SimSoc. The students had to eventually discover that without cooperation and helping the least of them, they died. It was interesting to see students figure it out. There was always some budding business student that quickly bought the funeral home. But what do you do when there is no one left?

Hey Marty – I prefer “snot box” over “honker”…….to me – honker denotes a fowl……and we know how she likes to kill critters…….so let’s not be nice !!

I felt I had to give credit where credit is due-

However, on the other hand, my husband and I are already planning the Thanksgiving blessing he’ll say before we dig in! All those relatives will be here to hear him giving thanks for our new president-elect. We will be a minority in our own house! But we’ll make sure they hear that our world is a better place because of our next president, Barack Obama.

Now Oprah has officially extended an invitation to Palin to appear on her show anytime, I’m torn about whether or not I want to see that. One part of me never wants to see Palin again as long as I live. The other part is intrigued to see how Oprah would deal with her. Any thoughts?

*****

I, for one, would like to see the end of Palin’s television appearances – this only gives her more free exposure and pretty soon, everyone is going to think, hey, she’s not so bad . . . and after awhile, folks will think it’s OK to talk like an idiot and quit trying to figure out what she said or discerning the b.s. from facts. I just think that those people who loved her all this time will definitly think she’s their “gal” and others, who are maybe not even as educated as she is, will think she’s brilliant . . . I’m just tired of her talking and then complaining b’cuz someone is too hard on her (Couric) or blaming others b’cuz she sounded stupid. People will start accepting her if she gets more and more exposure and by 2012, she’ll sound like a genius. Just my opinion.

I know a different type of republican- I’m thinking of a bunch of relatives (in Pa, NJ, Tenn) and a few different sets of friends– all have very big hearts and volunteer selfishly. My in-laws are republican because of the social issues (ie abortion and marriage). One set of friends are just plain fiscally conservative and always vote republican and actually thought of voting libertarian because of the fiscal issues.
******
I think these people are being left behind by their party as it implodes. If they ever come to understand that the issue of abortion is better solved by obviating the need through better sex education and birth control and better understanding of the MEDICAL conditions that might require it for the life of the mother, then we can work toward a society that rarely needs an abortion.

P.S. My crazy friend also had no problem with Palin spending $150,000 on clothes. It occurred to me today that SP could have bought a nice suit or two for the convention and then gone to Target for the rest of her clothes as the audience to whom she was playing wouldn’t “appreciate” her Nieman Marcus attire.

We certainly all have our opinions… We have had this talk all morning.

It is our right to express freely our opinions.

If you feel Barack means don’t talk about children, Fine.

If you think Barack means never turn your back on neglected or abused chuldren. Fine.

Muddies, (Old Native American lesson coming) If we are all sitting in a circle together and I place a drum in the middle of the circle, and ask you young warrior “What do you see?” you may say, “I see am Eagle feather Chief” and on the opposite side of the circle, I ask you young maiden “What do you see?” you may say “I see a small tuft of Buffalo hide”. So then, who is right? We could argue all day seeing only our side of the drum.

We are all one people, we all have ideas. Mine are shaped because I lost the 2 children I had with spouse. I am destroyed by this. It shapes my opinion all the time. Someone else could have 12 children and carry them all like sacks of potatoes and see nothing wrong with it at all.

So hereupnorthMN take this pipe, smoke it and pass it too Marty (VA) let’s go start a camp fire.

You’re right, when public speaking, you’re supposed to “know your audience” – wearing clothes worth thousands was not relating to her audience, especially not when you want to project an image of the gun totin’ moose guttin’ frugal mama. Gawd, how hypocritical could she be?

I completely agree with your comments about better sex ed, birth control, etc– These relatives will never see it this way- Abortion to them is murder- they’re on god’s side, god’s on theirs– they’re fundamentalist and will not sway. However, they give a lot of time to good volunteer work in nursing homes, cooking for those that are ill, taking people in, and so on. Good hearts in this regard and I had just wanted to point out that all republicans aren’t of the selfish nature.

I too hope the gop party “evolves” (pun intended) into the 21st century. I think this group of repubs has been “left behind” (oh gosh, pun intended again).

You can come and visit me Scrimshaw! I’m in Jämtland, Sweden… Not Swedish myself, just your usual mongrel English person, with the odd bit of French and Italian. Oh, I’m a mutt, maybe I can live at the White House too (ever hopeful).

What a nice thought to someday visit Sweden!
It’s been 30 years since I saw Europe (en Suisse, France) in my hippie backpack days. When my eyes were good, and I did
without magnification.

And my hope that we can all acknowledge ‘mutt-dom’ as our shared American heritage. Heck, global heritage, soon enough. Whether we are swimming in the deep end of the gene pool, or in the shallower mudflats… Brothers and Sisters and Mutts, all of us.🙂

I’ve noticed that two of my favorite living writers have rather similar voices: AKM and British comedian, television personality, novelist and scholar. He even has a blog: http://www.stephenfry.com/blog/?p=58
My favorite of his novels is “Making History”.

In a large forum, like a large family dinner, there will no doubt be dishes placed on the table that are less appealing to some and more appealing to others. Try a bite or don’t. Your choice. Tastes vary.

@ Marty–

There are so many other issues which are affecting the lives of many people that, in my view, call for our greater attention. Family issues are juicy fence post conversations, even if they do illustrate values that are dangerous and should be noted, but not dominate our conversations.

Jan (SW Washington) (04:23:02) :

______________________________
What a brilliant synopsis! This is exactly the way I’ve always seen the GOP’ers. With most that I know, taxes are the most important issue in the world (as if they don’t already have plenty of money).

Taxes trump any other concerns. To heck with our children’s future, to heck with the wars, to heck with our environment, our dependence on foreign oil, women’s rights, or any other issues.

I have to fight the tendency to see all GOP’ers in this way: “As long as I can keep as much money as possible, who cares about the future.”
