Hi everyone,

Snoskred here. AKMuckraker is stuck on a new laptop unable to log in, but dropped by the chat to let me know you needed a new open thread. Here tis! Enjoy.

Oh, and as a non-American, may I be one of the first to congratulate you on the election of Barack Obama. Everyone I know here in Australia is so thrilled for you. *I* am thrilled for you.

Now, fingers crossed that Alaska turns blue. Sephyroth tells me it cannot happen, but I have faith, and I believe.. yes we can!😉

The Alaska vote looks like what you get when you start the vote-counting before all the polls have closed – like voting has turned into a sport or something. The local Einsteins might be thinking they would have a little fun. Obviously they don’t feel they’ve had much to complain about the last 8 years.

Go figure.

congratulations, america!

we have several additional presents in this election besides our nice shiny new president:

elizabeth dole is toast, kay hagen is now senator from north carolina. i guess the people of north carolina agree that living in a theocracy is not such a hot idea.

among the numbers crunched for who voted how: “Candidate in touch with people like themselves: 57% Obama, 40% McCain” — i hope sarah palin sees this number and understands that her concept of “the real america” has been repudiated solidly.

of the six new england states, there was until tonight only one republican house rep. as of tonight there are ZERO.

my hope is that tomorrow we will get the late gift of michelle bachmann’s defeat in the minnesota house race to mr. tinklenberg. it’s not over.

one of the best gifts? “Candidate’s race wasn’t important to vote: Nine of 10 voters”

that’s america. the land that i love.

congratulations and thank you to everyone who worked and voted to make this happen.

Sorry, jas, but I LOVE Michelle Obama’s taste in clothing, as do many people I know. It’s classy, simple-but-elegant, classic-but-edgy, and she often wears a touch of vintage.

my advice to alaskans now that you get your governor back?

watch two things: expenditures by state government departments on new “PR” programs (that was how she got her face plastered all over national papers and magazines starting about a year ago) and her travel expenditures, particularly who’s writing the plane tickets, what kind of commission they’re getting and why the governor uses more expensive one-way tickets than round trip.

good luck.

My daughter just called in from Rochester NY to say about 50 Eastman music students were joyously celebrating outside, and were told by the police to disperse. At the end of an entire sermon about voting biblically on Sunday, we heard the email that’s been attributed to Dave Letterman, but wasn’t written by him, attributed to Jay Leno first, not written by him either, about how Americans are such terrible whiners. “What exactly is it that you don’t approve of about the Bush presidency, hmmmmmmm?”

And I just thought of all the people who are losing their homes and their jobs and sometimes their health, and sometimes their life savings, because of the economic problems. And don’t even get me started on the wars. And it made me sooooo angry!

Now we can actually work to improve America. And although I will be so nice to those McCain people tomorrow, I do look forward to the day when I can say “Ha, I told you so”!

This is a campaign that took literally millions of Americans working together to make this happen. Obama is a great leader, but it takes followers to make a leader, and millions followed. I can imagine how you feel, I’ve been lucky enough to have a few winners, but my feelings are really different than normal. Yes, it great to have won the election, but it is more than an election. It’s the culmination of a lifetime of working on progressive issues. From the days of strikes, demonstrations, and racial oppression to a day when we elect an African-American President. All I can do is sit here in disbelief with tears running down my face, and remember when we used to rally and sing “We shall overcome”. I’m glad to see this the dream is still alive and there is an army of millions to carry on and a great leader to lead them.

The Light of the West
yes, I feel like we’ve turned the light back on after 8 years of darkness. I hope it shines brighter and brighter. And thank you to everyone around the world who has kept that light shining all these years. We couldn’t have done this without you.

Yes We Can. World, we can. We can help each other, support each other and learn once again to live for others, for a higher purpose, and make this world a better place for all of us.

you know what I want? A world celebration on inauguration day. I want family recipes from the Obamas and Bidens, McCain and Palin, all the governors, and from countries around the world–the kind you can make at home–to choose a world class and inclusive celebration feast for the inauguration celebration. Yes, we’ve vented about McCain and Palin, and lord knows they have their faults, but so do I. It’s time for us to reach out across the divide and include everyone, or at least keep making the effort. It’s time we were one country again and time to begin seeing ourselves as one world.
Yes we can–reach out to McCain and Palin
Yes we can–begin including the disenfranchised
Yes we can–secure our borders without hurting our neighbors
Yes we can–make our schools better
Yes we can–give everyone hope
I’ve rolled up my sleeves. Let’s get started.

I can’t believe it is only 11 PST and it’s all over. My hubby turned off the lights, shut off his TV in the living room, gave me a sweet night kiss and has gone off to bed. I’m just to excited and inspired by the thought of President Obama and Vice President Biden winning to go to bed.

I could never sleep now, I’ve grown to use to sharing my late night hours with you here in Mudflats. I can’t imagine not tuning in here to see how and what you are doing. It occurs to me that as much as I/we needed Mudflats these last three months since it was announce that the AK Gov would be McCain’s running mate and we came in groves to learn just who this woman was, and you AKM so valiantly searched and researched to keep us informed, you may still need us, when SP returns home.

I can only guess what it will be like for you having to deal with her now. Oh, I know you to have grown and are stronger now seeing what you can do not with a sword but with words. Have you ever noticed that if you take the “S” off the front of sword and put it in the back it becomes “words” a much better instrument of peace. You have such a marvelous way with words dear friend, and those words have help us all keep the faith in this election.

I for one will continue to support you and your blog where ever you choose to take it in the days ahead. Thank you, for your courage and your devotion to this journey. Rest well knowing you have done a marvelous work.

Just returned from the Obama rally. What a wonderful night it was! There were about 125,000 people there. It was a place to make new friends of strangers. Lots of tears and love. Speaking of love…….

For those of you wondering who that handsome sound guy was on stage saying “last sound check for the next President of the US”, it was my honey boy. He just called to tell me he got his picture taken with the new President a few moments ago.

They went to the Hyatt, but evidently the Dem’s party was over. I think they were on their way back when the cops came around again. I’m sorry but the whole world is joyous! Hard to believe that anyone would get in trouble to singing the anthem tonight–even if it was 1:30 or so. They weren’t doing any mischief (I asked, she replied “Mom, it’s Eastman!).

Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina are going to have to wait for all of those other votes that were talked about to be counted. Missouri is 49% each with just a few hundred votes separating and ID and NC have a couple thousand. It’s on CNN website and they still haven’t called Montana yet.

I am back for one more guilty day of blogging/posting! Thank you all for all the work everyone did to get President Obama elected, for the support of Obama/Biden and each other through these extremely trying several months and I just have to say

Yeah! President Obama, Vice President Biden, Fabulous First and Second Ladies Michelle and Jill! We did it!

Go Florida! You look fabulous in Blue!

Hubby woke up this morning just in time to join me in front of the tv as The Announcement was made and sat and watched The Speech with me (was he wiping sleep out of his eyes or tears?). Then over coffee he said “It’s over. I don’t ever want to hear about Sarah Palin, John McCain, Joe the Whoever, any of their friends or any stories linked to any of them ever again. Time to move on and it’s a long, uphill climb, so let’s just see who Obama and Biden surround themselves with and watch what they can do.”

Oh, and let’s see what kind of dog they pick out for their daughters.

I celebrated & “whooped” it up with my daughter & son-in-law tonight. Feeling badly that GA didn’t turn blue as we’d hoped, but maybe our son’s NC will in the end. Our beloved Iowa did!! My daughter shouted “NO MORE PRE-EMPTIVE STRIKES!! NO MORE INVADING COUNTRIES WHO’VE DONE US NO HARM!!” We consider ourselves TRUE Pro-lifers. I may just put out my OBAMA sign to spite neighbors who decided it was against our HOA covenants.

I rarely pray, and never, ever for myself. A couple of days ago when a lot of people were feeling discouraged, I prayed for the deliverance from oppression of ALL the American people. Of course that included Republicans.

The great-uncle of a friend of mine from MS was a well-known preacher/activist in the sixties. He outraged just about everyone when, after the fight, he ministered to the KKK. His response was, “Mr Jesus died for everyone, including bigots”. Can’t argue with that logic.

Just as it was being announced that Obama had won, my daugher and I were talking on the phone. She was telling me how she was reading a story from the “Weekly Reader” to her pre-school class, which had a little lesson on what election day was and how important it was. I guess it included pictures of both Obama and McCain and the kids on their own started talking about who they and their parents support, like who they would vote for. Most of the kids in her class supported Obama, but one little girl started yelling at the others that Obama was a baby killing, she got so angry and upset the others so badly they had to take her out of class to talk her down. This is 4-5 year old, filled with this kind of fear and hate. Sigh…we do still have a lot to do.

Let’s keep those candles burning as these little ones and their parents learn that that the world will not come to and end and little babies will not be killed now that we have elected Obama and Biden.

There is one down side to Obama winning, and that is we get Palin back. Alaska is going to have to organize and work to change things. North Carolina and Missouri results still undetermined. I know it’s moot, but for some reason I want to know the final tally.

Been looking up election results for prior years so I could put this in context. Biggest turnout ever. Clinton pummeled Dole. Reagan vs. Mondale was a complete rout. But I don’t think anything will ever compare to tonight’s victory. “Oh what a night…”

I’m both exhausted and exhilarated. Don’t know whether to keep watching results or give in and go to sleep. Hmmmm.

To the folks in AK, I feel bad. I just don’t understand how the fantastic folks I’ve seen in pics at rallies can live with people who would even consider electing a convicted felon. (That definitely didn’t come out right, but I hope you know what I mean.)

If Stevens can garner that kind of vote, I think Sarah will be welcomed home as a hero. I think the blame will be put on on all sorts of variables, but none will include Sarah herself. Polls showing her declining approval will be damned.

I’ll stay tuned, that’s for sure. I want to know what happens to her. The story can’t be over. There was an ethics violation, at the very least. That has to mean something. There have to be repercussions.

This is surely not my last visit here, but I want to thank AKM and all the Mudpuppies for the info, support and camaraderie. During a crazy time, this has been an oasis of sanity. THANK YOU.

As I had said on a tread yesterday…

“Listen and you will hear Lady Liberty speak today” She spoke in a loud clear voice. I a lucky one to hear her words spoken by her son Barack today. I was located at Mudflats Point in Grant Park at Chicago. I donated the Mudflats sign and the Alaskan Flag I had attached to the light pole to the historical society of my imagination. Word’s at this time couldn’t ever match what I saw and experienced. I hope to be able to write a report for you tomorrow. And forward it along with the photo’s from Mudflats Point to AKM.

One of my many favorite photo’s of the day is myself with my Mudflats sign and AK flag with “Ronnie Wo Wo”. If you don’t know Ronnie he is a famous local Cubs fan who is seen everywhere. I waited for six hours to enter Grant Park. I couldn’t believe it when I saw Ronnie. So I ran up to him and said Ronnie I have to get a photo of us for Mudflats, “cool” was all he said. Carolina Procter, of the post tribune sums up Ronnie best, “If Ernie Banks is Mr. Cub, then Ronnie “Woo Woo” Wickers is Mr. Cub Fan”.

My AT&T service completely let me down at the rally, I was unable to get a signal from 7pm on. Voicemail was not transmitted to my phone until 12:30am cdt. So, I apolagize for not posting sooner.

Obama leads in North Carolina by 12,160! 100% of the vote is in, but each has 50% and no one is calling it.

In MO, McPain leads by 4917. 100% of the vote is in and each has 49%.

I bet in both of those states, the Electoral College has to make the decision. Usually, they vote with the majority of the state, but they don’t have to. They’ll probably have to vote among themselves.

Looking forward to your report Shikago! We had quite the chat going tonight and thought of you. Heard from USA Barbie earlier, and Chicago was there too. Where exactly did you wind up for Mudflats Point?

I’m crazy tired and want to go to bed – staying up to see if Al Franken can make it. Too crazy that Stevens might get re-elected from Alaska.

Beautiful day. Lots of tears. Peace.

Don’t get on us Alaskans too hard about Ted Stevens. He’s brought all sorts of good things to Alaska. The babies in the village near my house were getting hepatitis A because the village got their potable water out of the creek. Uncle Ted got some federal money to match state money to drill a well and build a water system. Now the babies don’t get sick. People all over Alaska have stories about how Uncle Ted has impacted their lives like that.

Couldn’t sleep and here I am again. Here is such strange irony: John McCain’s concession speech (unlike the bulk of his campaign) was delivered by the man that many of us had thought he was, before he was infected by that disease that makes candidates ruthless enough to do ANYTHING to get elected to the office. Honestly, if THAT McCain had run the entire race, who knows if it might have been different?
I just find it incredibly sad that so many candidates do seem to be willing to sell their soul to get that job. I’ll never respect him again–some things are lost forever–but it was a gracious and seemingly sincere speech and I hope he means what he said. Very telling that his audience STILL needed tamping down, as they broke into boos when he complimented Barack Obama.
Somebody get the hook for LaPalin. She clearly has the ambition infection and does NOT want to leave the national stage. So let’s all give her a little help, gettin’ it done.
OK back to bed for a few more winks (shudder!) before I have to get up for work.

After the tears (I cried like a baby) and jubilations, a couple of thoughts in the cold light of day:

1. I think Barack should be seriously considering how to get Mccain involved in his administration. Inspite of this race that sometimes got quite ugly, I believe that with his experience he’ll have a lot to offer the Obama administration.

2. My conservative (for Europe I guess) heart has always feared a left leaning “socialist” Obama administration. My virtual vote was won by Obama on the basis of character, intellect and temperament – I truly believe that he has the qualities to bring about unity, national pride and hope to all beyond America. The icing on the cake was that Americans could go beyond race, and vote on the basis of ideas.

I also believe that it’s a disgrace for citizens of the most powerful nation in the world not to have access to healthcare and worldclass education, these should be basic human rights in a country like America.

I think that many conservatives will be pleasantly surprised at how moderate Obama will be. He just does not have the temperament to lurch in any direction. He’s proved throughout the campaign that he is a considered and measured thinker and will try to lead for ALL Americans, not just the left.

3. Finally, congratulations on electing a visionary, who has the audacity to hope; even when the odds are stacked against him. With all the current challenges, Obama is surely the leader most likely to achieve a turn around in the fortunes of America and the world at large.

God Bless him and family, constant prayers as he takes on this challenge. The world is behind you Obama!!!

Everyone at the Victory Party in Sarasota were so happy when Sarasota and all of Florida went blue!
You poor guys get Sarah Palin back. People are in agreement here that if McCain had not run such a dirty campaign and had not picked Palin he would have won!

YAY for Obama! i am one happy American tonight!

snoskred: i will get you the proof you need to see i was not lying. sorry to disrupt chat, but if you really look at the record, hussien is the person who stired the pot way too much and cause the uproar. please ask AKM to read my email i sent her.

Micheal came into the chat room and said that a person was abused and Barack was the excuse given for this. Please forgive me Snoskred and others for responding to Michael, but I was very concerned.

Micheal: way to blame the fact that you wrote of something very disturbing on me who genuinely meant well and who was sincerely trying to help. For you to say what you did afterward makes me wonder if you are indeed a troll.

America has spoken and now Alaska gets Sarah back. The name SARAH means “Little Princess” and that is what Sarah Palin seems to have been all her charmed life. She has always gotten what she wants with a beguiling smile and coquettish wink of her eye. That technique has worked for her well up until now, but American was able to see through it to the lack of substance beneath. Hopefully when she returns home the great folks of Alaska will have taken notice and they too will see clearly through the facade of a Beauty Queen run amuck.

I’m very disappointed that the state of Alaska did not come through for Obama as other states have in history making but the good news is that Obama finally did it, he finally won as we’d all hope for. I appreciate and aplauded those who supported and voted for Obama but I had wish that many other Alaskians would come through as well in turning your state blue. Of a life time like this you would want your state to be part of the history making that shows that you were one of the states that helped supported Obama and put him in history record.

Well I hope now Obama going to be a good president, but it already looks like he not going to keep any of his promises, Last night in his speech he said, he mite not be able to do anything in the first Year or even in his FIrst term, Tell you this right now,, he will not make a second term,,THinking he can sit on his lazy ass, thinking he just got a job at the DMV and take his time, If something don’t happen in 2 years he Dust,

Jody V,
You can’t blame Obama for not completing all his promises in one year. Of course it’s going to take time for the next president to dig us all out of this mess that the Repugs has dug a deep hole for the nation already. Besides, at least Obama is being honest about it and not trying to put on a fake impression and promise like McCain and Palin. Any problems and mess is going to have to take time, it’s not an over night problem solving type of thing.
