Open Thread – Election Eve in Alaska

4 11 2008

map

This is it, Mudflatters….Election Eve.  We’ve been on a strange journey since August 29th, when the unlikely selection of Sarah Palin for Vice President was announced.  It all comes down to tomorrow.

Remember, the Mudflats Chat Room will be open all day.  Just go to the Mudflats forum (on the sidebar) and then click the link in the upper right-hand corner to enter the chat room.  Before you click the link, I’ll tell you what it’s like.  It’s a big virtual Alaskan lodge made of long orange spruce logs.  There’s a roaring fire in the fireplace, and some nice hot cider.  There’s a full wet bar over in the corner too, for those who need it!  There are windows looking out over the Chugach Mountains, and lots of big, soft chairs and couches to flop on and chat with all your fellow Mudflatters.  Unlike many Alaskan lodges, there are no moose heads on the wall here.  The only moose heads to be found are those still attached to our favorite Mudflats mascots Brian and Brenda, who are hanging out outside in the snow, nibbling bark.  So stop in any time!

I will also be trying to make sure that there are threads available for you on the blog, and will attempt to post about my doings about town, and any other big happenings of note.  I’m looking forward to sharing tomorrow with all of you.  It’s been quite a ride, and it’s not over yet.

Good night from Alaska, Mudflatters.  See you in the morning.

Off to vote in a few minutes. Dixville Notch, NH, was a landslide for Obama.

Two questions: How could the legislative inquiry have found Palin guilty of ethics violations and the Personnel Board find the opposite? Would the Personnel Board’s outcome have been different if SP were going on to Washington and not returning to AK?

Apparently, 10 times out of the last 13 elections the taller candidate won and usually, if the Redskins lose the last game before the election, the incumbent party lose the election. So… umm, there.

I know I’ll never be first to post on a thread here, but there is one ‘first’ I can now claim — I was FIRST in line at my polling place this morning and proudly cast my vote for the next President of the United States — Barack Obama !!!

ian in hamburg (01:36:27) :

The inquiry was started by a charge she filed against herself to a committee that reports to her and that will continue to report to her – so they let her off on a technicality claiming that the legislative committee made their decision based on the wrong statute. It looks like a rather thinly applied coat of white wash that fails to cover the real potential criminal liabilities involving income tax – if the federal government chooses to investigate.

Up and ready to go – I’m so excited and hopeful that I’m teary. Remind everyone to vote – as if I have to tell ya.
Anyway, lets hope that SC will move its percentage of eligible voters who actually vote up out of the No. 49 slot. Repubs have had such a stranglehold for such a long time, that neither side has felt the need or desire to go to the polls.
NOT THIS YEAR!!!

I wish the artists behind PalinasPresident would do the following things:

1) Have a picture of Joe Vogler on the wall and Sarah’s nasal “Joe the Secessionist — keep up the good work!”

2) Put McCain in the closet rotation with Bambi, Thumper, and the Penguin

I am going to go through serious election withdrawal and these might help me when I need a little fix.

Election withdrawal… don’t count your votes before they’re all in… I strongly suspect that unless there’s a landslide there’ll be extra weeks of legal wrangling – and there’s no way I’m going Mudflats cold turkey. Though I may have to catch up on my sleep…

On the Condolences thread, about the candles.
Lots of people have lit a candle in the OBAMA group, and some of us have started lighting in an AKM group. You can click on ‘groups’ to find the OBAMA group, or you can just follow the directions and when the opportunity is given to list group, just put AKM.

If you search groups, and put either OBAMA or AKM, then it gives you a page with all those candles and you can read those that are lit in the group.
This sounds really complex but it actually isn’t, sorry.

Maybe, just maybe, the African American and youth turnout here in the Palmetto State will make a difference this time. If SC, by some miracle, goes Blue, it will be a joyous time for sure.

It has been sprinkling a bit for the last few hours and I hope that it stops soon as I suspect there will be a lot of elderly voters who will sit in the rain in wheelchairs if they have to in order to vote this time.

I just wish my Mom and Dad were alive to witness history being made, one way or another.

It’s almost 7 here in Pa. I am due to be an outside greeter at my polling place at 9. Heard from a friend last evening whom I hadn’t spoken with since all of this began, she’s been busy and so have I. She’s a died in the wool Repub., so I figured she’d be voting for the “other team”, but… she sent me an email last evening with some little joke attached and I responded that I had been busy campaigning, and going to be a greeter today and joyfully voting for Obama, and she instantly responded with “I love him!!!!!!!” My heart soared. It’s going to be a great day for America. I will definitely stop by later to sit by the fire and have a cup of cider with you all. Keep the faith.

Good morning from VA! Congrats to NY Dem and anyone else who made it for being first in line! I went at 5:30, and was about 50th. But the line started moving shortly before 6:00, and I was out at 6:04. By that time, the line stretched through a long hallway and out into the parking lot. I’ve never seen this before at my polling place! Delivered 190 door hangers yesterday; going out canvassing this morning.

4 11 2008

The last 8 minutes of Barack’s final rally in Manassas, VA last night (attended by 90,000). In a departure from the stump speech, he tells a story about finding inspiration early in the campaign:

OK, I’ve voted but I think I forgot to vote for our Congressional representative!

Anyway, two districts vote at my polling place. There were two of us voting in my district, but the line for the other district was out the door! I don’t quite understand that ’cause we’re a small township with no intra-district issues.

I noticed the Nobama sign that I saw yesterday morning is gone but in it’s place is a sign that I could not read easily. It said something about “real Americans.”

Also saw two homemade signs, one “Republicans for Obama” and the other “Joe, the REAL Plumber for Obama” – both signs obviously made by the same person(s).

Now we wait.

Early Landslide in NH:

Dixville Notch: 15 Obama to 6 McCain
Hart’s Location: 17 Obama to 10 McCain (I think 2 Ron Paul also, bless their hearts).

The only reason they can close their polls and count them this early is when they reach 100% turnout by registered voters. So there!

I’m off to Obama Hdq to do whatever they need. Yesterday I did door hangers in the far southeast of the county along Rt 28 to Pittsburgh. This was definitely mountain goat country and I am tired. However, the weather was perfect, people were nice. Coming home I listed to Tina Fey on Fresh Air – NPR. It is probably on their site. If anyone wants to keep up with PA events try .http://www.wduq.org/audio/index.html This is news and jazz from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

I plan to vote this afternoon so that I can find out the turnout here in the back of beyond. I am going to skip the party because I live 23 miles away on a horrible road. Yesterday I bought some nice Australian wine (ABC stores are closed as long as the polls are often) and intend to cruise back in my nighty. If for some reason things go south, I have lemon vodka.

Wow – Interesting sentence construction there, sorry. Not yet into my first cup of tea…

The reason they can close their polls and count them so early is that once they reach 100% turnout by registered voters, it’s over. Better?

mornin mudpups..!

Seems too early for me to be up and about, but i’m going to vote in a bit.. hope the line isn’t too horrid..

I was reading in the previous thread about our girl Barbie released her medical records.. It was very special of her to have what amounted to a note from her pal, ‘The Doctor’ write a review of her health for America.

Medical records aren’t neatly typed PDF’s.. Medical records are doctors notes, and codes.. Short terms, blood work notes, etc. The sham Barbie produced was not anything resembling real medical records. It was like a movie review instead of the script. Just another scam in the soon to be over story of our American Dream Girl going back to the punkin patch and back to well-deserved obsurity..

Hi muddies!
I just got to work, after voting. There are only 1200+ people in my precinct, but I decided to leave the house at 6am, when I heard on local news at 5:45 that some precincts already had 100 people waiting! Happily, I was only #18 in line and had voted a mere 26 minutes after the poll opened. That’s not too bad, considering.
There was a line a block long, when I left. A visual scan tells me that the crowd (which fits my neighborhood, in general) was probably 95% Obama. How did I judge that? The number of happy, smiling, friendly people vs. those who looked a little depressed. (They’re depressed because the Republican’s friend-cold rain-cleared up about 30 minutes before 7 am!)

G’Morning fellow muddies! And what a glorious day to be an American citizen finally also! 🙂

Hubby slipped out early for the voting place to open, 6AM. We live in a small town with never a waiting line (maybe 10-15 during rush hours). He was 13th in line with a estimated 50 total! I’ll be heading over around 10ish after the 9-5 working peeps clear out. I’ll be hanging out at home today getting some *stuff* accomplished then celebrating later tonight. YES. WE. CAN.

For all of our citizens who (as Rachel appropriately tagged) are required to pay a hefty poll tax, arrive with your comforts, camp out and cast your vote proudly. I just can’t believe how ill-prepared we STILL are when it comes to election day. Hopefully President Obama will rally the states to make the necessary changes to our defunct system.

What a crock of crap with the medical release. I’m not sure if I read the actual wording or paraphrasing but Sarah and Dr. friend must have gone to the same school of sleight. That report is like getting a note from my doctor saying that I’ve been seen for rhinitis and am able to return to work. Geesh! Smelly stuff wrapped in layers of paper up there in AK, you betcha.

By the time I voted there were only about 20 in line. We only had 2 questions to vote on this year so the line moves fast. The questions are whether to allow early voting and whether to allow slots. I voted yes to early voting and no to slots. Amazing, no McCain signs at the polls but several with Palin signs. I can’t imagine why the GOP would allow this. You always sell the top of the ticket. One guy had a huge sign, “Honk For Palin.” In the interest of keeping noise pollution down I opted to express my views of Palin visually. from the look he gave me I think that he didn’t agree with my decision.

Note on questions: Maryland allows referendums. If you get enough signature you can have a question put on the ballot. I remember that one year w had so many questions that someone was passing out bumper stickers, “Vote Yes On Question No.”

Looking forward to voting this morning, kicking back with a quiet breakfast, taking a mid-day nap (I’m a freelancer and I’m taking today off but I’ve been up all night) and then turning on the TV one last obsessive time (until 4 years from now) to watch the returns. Be glad when it’s over when McCain has to keep stocking up on sunscreen and Palin can go back to supposedly buying consignment clothes for the family.

Even though I woke up at 4:50 am this morning and went to bed at midnight, I have this smile on my face. Deep down I know the amount of people voting today is going to be too strong for the Republinazis to steal this election. I think we may know by 10 pm tonight when Florida and Ohio go to OBAMA/BIDEN and McNasty and Stalin do NOT stand a chance!

Here’s trying to make a negative into a positive: Obama’s Grandma passed away so that her angel can watch over the election and allow democracy and justice to prevail!

Greetings from the red panhandle of Florida. The polls are open, even with early voting the lines are long. I’m off to drive for the Obama campaign, but I’m not working for Barack today. Today I’m working to finish the job that Toot started.

LOL LOL LOL

And I do agree with a much earlier statement by our wonderful soon-to-be-First Lady. My pride in my country is returning when I see voters turning out in droves to vote and when I see the excitement at Obama rallies (though shame and embarrassment when I see and hear McCain/Palin rallies) and I will REALLY be proud of my country when Obama/Biden are put in the White House.

Hi Jamie,

Thought about you yesterday when things on this blog were going wild!!

Hi Tired Mom – I disappeared yesterday mid-thread cause hubby, who has finally lost patience with the election and my “computer friends”, came home and groaned audibly whenever I approached the computer. This morning he finally asked “So, what are you going to do once it’s over?”

But I’ll be here all day and all night! I went shopping this morning and hesitated in front of the Champagne aisle. I was afraid I’d jinx something if I bought it too soon. So I’ll jump out tomorrow morning and buy my bottle.

Oooh! Obama is voting now!

Oooh – right. Feeling much better now after a slow start today – I love hearing everybody’s voting stories (I was thinking about you this morning, Bobg).

Been You Tubing my 11-year-old through the best of Obama, and I think he’s going to be allowed to stay up late tonight to watch the Swedish reporting. He is an Obama fan – and while I was attempting to explain who Martin L King was and other stuff, he just burst out with “But that’s sooo stupid, why should it matter what colour anyone is?” One of his best friends is an Ahghan refugee, and he’s so impressed by the fact this boy speaks 5 languages despite being perfectly bilingual himself. The next generation may not be colour blind, but I’m hoping for more respect and tolerance around the world…

HOPE people, HOPE

In line to vote (6am) listening to young voter confering with her dad about our (long) list of propositions. Dad was very clear and informed, daughter just kept re-iterating “but is this one socialism, I don’t want to have anything to do with socialism”. McCain/Palin damage will be take a generation to repair, I think.

The polling place got through 64 paper ballot voters and about 30 electronic voters in 50 minutes. Going to need to get the process rate up above 2 voters per minute to clear all 1475 voters for our polling place. Exiting voters were passing the word – use the _PAPER_ ballot it’s faster.

McCain watches the election returns and the returns from Ohio and Florida show that he has no chance of winning the Presidency.

McCain: Well Sarah, I’d better call Obama and give my concession. I think that you should stand next to me when I address our people.

Palin: Not me. I don’t want people to think I’m a loser.

McCain: It’s over Sarah, we lost.

Palin: You lost old man. I’m going to be President in 2012.

McCain: That’s a long shot Sarah.

Palin: Moose Hockey! The people love me. Even Alec Baldwin says that I’m hot.

McCain: I don’t think the GOP will support you Sarah. They don’t like losers.

Palin: I’m going to run the party.

McCain: (Eyes up to the ceiling) Do you have transportation back to Alaska?

Palin: I’ll take the campaign jet.

McCain: The jets are down, we lost. We can’t use the jets anymore. I’ll have the limo brought around.

Palin: Okay, but I thought that I’d take the jet home.

McCain: (Walks Sarah and Todd out to limo.) Have a nice trip home.

Palin: I’ll be back. The next time I’ll run as President with Todd as VP.

McCain: (Gives a weak smile and walks back into his house.)

The limo drives through downtown Phoenix and eventually comes to a stop in front of a building.

Palin: (To driver of limo) What is this, the airport?

Driver: It’s the Greyhound Bus station Ma’am.

Palin: I’m not taking a Greyhound Bus.

Driver: Can you get out a minute ma’am?

Sarah and Todd get out of the limo and stand on the sidewalk. Suddenly the limo speeds away. Sarah notices the Obama/Biden bumper sticker on the limo.

Yes mudpuppies… out in the streets today! I was down at local HQ here yesterday for some hours and we still had a lot of hang-tags to go place on doors. Plenty have voted early, but, for example, plenty of 20 and 30 somethings have not… Yes, even on this last day, volunteers are needed – even do something on your own like suggested above. Go to the polls or stand on a busy corner even if you have voted… non-political dress (but a Hawaiian shirt would be good) and be willing to hold someone’s baby or help with their kids or hold a spot in line while someone goes to the bathroom or has to step out of line for whatever. Even if you have never done this before – time to be part of history! Every vote counts! Show your pride! Don’t assume!

The bus driver for my kid said they went by one place and the lines are very long.

A little local bragging:

We are lucky in our area because people can vote at any vote center in the county (not just the town): http://www.co.larimer.co.us/elections/votecenters_tab.htm

“The Larimer County Elections Department is proud to be the pioneers of the Vote Center Model. Larimer County successfully used Vote Centers for our 2003 Coordinated Election, both the Primary and General Elections in 2004, the 2005 Coordinated Election and both the Primary and General Elections in 2006

The success of the Vote Center model has drawn statewide and national interest to this innovation in voting. This page has been designed as a one-stop portal for both election officials and the general public seeking information about Vote Centers.”

Shove Maggot “That One” Hussein aka the problem child-I posted this before but if Obama had flown by commercial airline he would have had to by tickets on at least three jets for his Secret Service people and the National Security people that accompany Presidential candidates. All tickets except his would be at government expense as the Secret Service and National Security are government employees. Obama taking the campaign jet saved the USA a ton of money.

More Light than Heat

I got one of those emails from John McCain. I’ve been a registered Dem for years, so I guess his minions were tech savvy enough to use the same tools the spammers use to collect email addresses. Here’s my response.

Dear. Senator McCain,

I’ve been voting since 1968, and this year I’m voting to make history. President Kennedy said in 1964 that the torch had been passed to a new generation of Americans. It is time to do that once again.

In 2000, I respected you, Sir. You have served the nation for many years. But in the course of this campaign you have demonstrated by your actions and your words, that primary in your mind is the ambition to sit behind the desk in the Oval Office. That ambition has called into question in my mind your slogan of “Country First.” I saw hints of the former John McCain in your words at the Al Smith dinner and again last weekend on SNL.. But the John McCain of the campaign trail has been an angry, bitter old man lwho acks the temperament and ideas that we need to move forward. For that I have been truly disappointed.

So, this year, I am proudly casting my vote for the future. I will be voting for Sen. Barack Obama. He is the first presidential nominee to whom I have donated and the first for whom I have volunteered in my 40 years of voting eligibility. I just hope and pray that his administration will not be made more difficult by the ways in which you, your running mate and your campaign have sought to polarize our nation further. It is my fervent hope that you will use your concession speech tonight to attempt to begin that healing by repudiating the words and tone that characterized your campaign since the convention.

OT- Why does Palin drink so much coffee if she is a nursing mother? I was reading the twitter report by the ADN reporter and it mentioned her drinking coffee. I have read on other posts about how much coffee she drinks, I believe there is a drink named after her in Alsaka? In Colorado Springs yesterday, Hank Williams, Jr. accused Obama of not liking the national anthem.

I think he owes Obama a public apology, and I personally do not care to hear him singing any more on Monday Night Football. Does anyone know how to get in touch with both Hank Williams, Jr. and ESPN? Thanks.

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – At a Sarah Palin rally here tonight, country music star Hank Williams, Jr. took the stage to sing the national anthem, as he has done at Palin events across the country for weeks. But this time, the singer decided to share his personal views about Barack Obama with the crowd.

“You know, I’m usually at ‘Monday Night Football’ tonight, but Colorado, this is a lot more important tonight,” Williams, Jr. said. “Join me now in our national—you know, that song that, uh, Mr. Obama’s not real crazy about, we’re singing it right now.”

(snip)

Palin then stepped up to the microphone and defended Williams Jr.’s right to free speech.

(snip)

Though Paln defended Williams Jr.’s rights, she said nothing to the crowd to disabuse the crooner’s notion that Obama isn’t fond of the national anthem. Palin has, however, previously said that she is sure Obama loves his country and doesn’t doubt his patriotism.

Hey everyone! Lighthouse & everyone else… Ft. Collins, CO here…. I’m perusing at warp speed as it’s going to be a busy day. Went out to breakfast with my partner who got talked into the Hawaiian shirt thing. The wait staff had a chuckle about the subtlety of it…

Came home and all the garbage was not yet out for garbage day. Have to buy tickets for Thanksgiving today to fly across country. Send some positive thought this way (willing to pay a little more, but not much for direct and it’s a royal pain otherwise, since I have a kid who uses a wheelchair and lots of gear). Later, I have to see if a single mom friend is going to the polls and when and does she need a ride around town for crises management (certain services and food bank, etc). Some people are living so close to the economic edge… and others are so out of touch, which is just one more reason why every vote counts. Later, HQ, vote center polling place, or street corner, depending. To top it off, could someone please come type for me as I recently went to the dermatologist and they burned this thing off my fingertip and even when I hold it out of the way, it really hurts???

Oh, and BTW, Lighthouse… I have construction workers with excavators, and other pieces of heavy equipment working on a flood control project on the side street next to my corner house. If you did that Lady Godiva thing next to my kitchen window and waved an Obama sign… I bet you’d get a lot of gawkers and maybe even voters. Your story cracked me up. Later folks…

The good news about the 2nd Troopergate report is that it seems to be based on direct sworn testimony by the parties, including Sarah Palin, in which they outright deny that certain meetings and conversations even took place. It could turn into the classic case where the original offense might warrant an embarrassing slap on the wrist (first Troopergate Report) but the cover up
(lying under oath in the second investigation) results in felony charges. People may now start to come up with irrefutable evidence that the meetings/conversations took place and we start looking at Troopegate III!

Got to the polls at 7:30 this morning to cast my ballot for Obama. The wait in line was 45 minutes and a long ballot in AZ so another 5 minutes in the booth and when I left at 8:30 the line was as long as it was when I got into it. The rolls show a lot of early voters so I won’t be surprised if voter turnout here exceeds 85%. I’m going to swing by the poll on my way home to see what the lines look like as I suspect they’ll be even longer.

While in line I spoke with a lovely woman my age who shared she is voting for McCain. A great conversation and we agreed to disagree and hope that once this election is over, that the rest of the country can speak with each other as respectfully and with shared humor as we did. We both agreed that regardless of the outcome we all need to work hard to change this country and we also agreed that it’s an incredible thing to see all of us exercise the right so many have died for. I’m a proud American today! (and will be even prouder when our man takes his place in the WH!)

Eugene Jarecki: An Ode to Tomorrow

http://buzz.yahoo.com/article/1:huffington_post:dac734ed3b98643aaeddff3f1d157cb1

“Let us recognize that for that man to fulfill his promise to realize the kind of change we seek — in the care of our bodies, our minds, our children, our planet, our streets, our livelihoods, and our security — that we ourselves must be the agents of such change, whose unrelenting commitment to fundamental reform will be needed to give him the fortitude to battle the disfiguring forces of Washington.”

Name change, formerly IfImlyingImpalin.

It’s overcast skies, 53 deg 9:15am here in Littleton. I have not ventured out but, shortly, I want to walk over to our polling place to how its going. I voted a couple of weeks ago as did over 2/3 of 2004 voters. I’m excited about the turnout. It promises to be a record buster.

A colleague (R) was very resigned to the avalanche that’s coming. The Repugs, I’m sure, are in there digging, rigging, manipulating whatever they can but if there is any justice in this world they will fail.

The intense interest and volume of the early voting is encouraging. I am looking forward to hearing about the greetings for SP on visit to AK from the Muddies and pictures please.

Thanks to all work you Muddies have done across the country and just the pure inspiration that comes from your enthusiasm and willingness to change for the better. When O wins, We’re Fired Up, Ready to Go!

Hi to fellow Coloradans, Nisperos, CO Almost Native, Lighthouse (CO), and any others. I’m here is the Stoney Creek Subdivision, Jeffco.

I just signed on so haven’t read above – but they were mentioning a few minutes ago on MSNBC about the high expense of having her fly to Alaska to vote – when she had an absentee ballot. They even got there early and had to hang out in a coffee shop. The whole dang plane full of reporters who had to pay their way for this little photo op.

I bet that cost every bit as much as Obama flying to visit his dying Toot – which Repugs are suing him over.

Mike In Illinois

This just in. Obama wins Dixville Notch NH! This is where they have a tradition of midnight voting and actually announce the results after all 26 registered voters in town have voted. Obama won this year by a two to one margin!

This is significant in that Dixville Notch has voted overwhelmingly Republican since giving Richard Nixon all nine of it’s votes against JFK in 1960. They even narrowly voted for Ford over Carter in 1976 and voted two to one for Bush in 2004 over Kerry and 3 to 1 for Bush over Gore in 2000.

In my own heavily Republican precinct in Illinois, which is across the street from my house, the parking lot had more cars than ever before and that is despite having had 25% doing early voting which was not available during the last Presidential election. There are really no downticket races that are competitive and there is no chance that McCain can win Illinois so I presume that they just generally fired up.

Thanks for your excellent coverage up there in Alaska.

Just got back from voting. The pundits may be wrong. It was no slower after 10:00. The co-ordination was great though so it took about 40 minutes. It really helps if you know the entire ballot before entering the booth. I arrived about 3 hours and 15 minutes after the polls opened and was voter #697 in a small suburb. A high vote count can only be good for Obama I believe.

She has known about Obama over the past few years, but really got hooked when I asked her to watch the “Racism” speech. For 37 minutes she sat and listened. First – don’t forget how low GWB and his gang dragged down the reputation of the States. They look like cowboys and thugs and Europeans were furious with their total disdain of any other country in the world! It was even more disappointing to Europeans because Europeans love the US and love Americans and couldn’t understand how this admin could “go it alone” and thumb their collective noses at the rest of the world. They also never understood how GWB has made it to the end of his mandate and was never thrown out of office.

And with Obama comes not just a change of administration, but someone who is educated, smart, thoughtful, careful and someone who believes in diplomacy. Europeans have great respect for ELITISTS! And they do see that once the US elects a black man for Pres then the something vital has changed in the world and we will have moved into the 21st century.

Marty (VA) Barack "Mr. President-Elect" Obama

Sneak Preview..! Ohoh.. Overheard during the McGrumpy concession speech.

My Fellow Americans,

As you know, we lost a hard fought election. While I tried to fight, my thumbs ended up with Carpal tunnel syndrome for all those thumbs up i was doing. I feel that I did a good job, but Americans are pathetically stupid and I lost because they didn’t LISTEN to my words.

Remember, I was very specific in my comments and plans. Each one revolved aound how horrid Obama would be. He wanted to give the middle class a tax cut and hey, I’m rich, how much of a moron would I be if i gave myself a huge tax hike?

My healthcare plan was perfect, yet the morons of America said they didn’t like my plan. I was going to give everyone $50,000 towards healthcare.. umm.. huh? … I only said $5,000???? HOLY CRAP.. I meant $50,000.. OHHHH No wonder everyone wasn’t happy with it, that explains it.. Can we have a do-over? I meant to give everyone $50,000.. Wait, i think i’m having a blood vessel in my neck explode.

My plan to buy houses was brilliant, and you morons didn’t see my brilliance??? I would buy your house, regardless what you owed and sell it back to you for $12,000. People in mansions would have had $234 monthly mortgage payments.. Why would you not like my plan?? True Brillance. Just cause it would cost $5.6 trillion, big deal.. chump change

Energy policy was great.. We’d drill to china, if need be. Drill and drill more.. In backyards across america.. Who’d not want a oil rig in their backyard?? Kids could play on it, and have fun with crude. It’s slippery you know? And we’d then pump it into trucks bring it to oil refineries and it would sit there for 10-15 years. I wonder if i have to pay rental on all those trucks. And while polar bears are cute, oil is more important. All those fad power plans? Solar, , you all think you’re so damn smart.. what do we do when the sun dies?? ?SEEE??? Wind,… it could stop being windy anytime now. NuQUE-ler is ideal. Not dangerous at all.. Look, see? This is a 1″ piece of a spent uranium power rod.. Safe as can be.. I can toss it around and play catch with kids.. Hmmmm.. My skin seems to be a burning a little, but it’s not .. ok .. i think my hand just melted.. But just ignore that.. Nuclear is the SAFE Way to go.. Oh no.. i think i just lost my testicles..

Now, I will admit why i lost. It wasn’t all those negative campaign ads, it wasn’t all the lies i told, and it wasn’t my staff. Just because i spent the past month saying lies about obama, that wasn’t it.

Simply put.. I lost because I met this woman named Sarah Palin.. She gave me a woody, and without thinking, I said ‘babe, wanna be my VP??? And she said YES.. God, in my wildest dreams I never thought she’d say yes.. It was a JOKE .. Honest. I really, really never intended her to be VP… I had Mit on hold when she agreed.. I was trying to flirt with her, and figured what a better way to get into someone pants than by offering her a job. So, you can imagine my shock when she said yes. I figured she’d say she was honored, but she had to run her own state and couldn’t abandon the people of Alaska who she loves and adores..

So, please understand it wasn’t my fault, really.. I apologize for being a man with needs.. I know people think I’m married and I have Cindy for that sorta thing, You kidding me??? She’s more frigid than a frozen totem pole. Her hair is pulled back so tight, she can’t blink. There’s no way.

So, I’ll blame this Sarah woman. God I hate her. You guys only had to listen to her during speeches. Try sitting thru hour after friggin hour of her incessant blathering. The woman is dumber than a cactus.

I will be back in 2012.. So, keep me in mind for when i’m 80.. McCain/anyone but Palin in 2012.

Fight fight fight..!!! Can someone take me to the ER.. I think my nose is falling off my face..

Did you see the halftime interviews during the Steelers game last night? I was amazed and thrilled to see Barack Obama say that the one thing he’d change about sports would be to have a college football play-off! Lots of Penn State fans would love that! Hubby and I voted together this morning before work – first time I ever saw a line in our little town’s polling place – it was great!

Hey Rush, for better or worse, in Illinois we vote for judges. On the paper ballots you have to fill in the middle of an arrow for every one you vote for. There were more than 70 judges on the ballot. It took me at least 15 minutes.

You know, on the one hand I really don’t want the networks to start calling the election until after 8PM here in CA, because that always depresses the late-day turnout and we do have other elections on the ballot beside President, including our usual rash of initiatives. As a general rule, lower turnout in CA means less liberal results.

On the other hand, I am so looking forward to the Republican implosion concession speeches, and the subsequent wingnut pundit bloviation.

Ah, me. What to wish for?

My brother just called me from Maine. He just had to call someone and tell them he had voted. For Obama, of course. Now, he’s always voted, but this was the first time, he said, that he felt that he really made a difference and wanted to, and it meant something. He kept going on about that.

I had just come back from voting myself and told him I understood. I had passed a young man waving an Obama sign on the highway and just had to honk the horn again and again. The guy loved it.

My brother and I decided that this vote must feel like when our parents voted for Kennedy. I’ll have to ask them.

GO VOTE!!

Just got back from voting! It took all of 7 minutes! Hubby voted first thing this morning and had to wait in line for about an hour and a half so I was very surprised to get through so quickly.
Voted on a paper ballot, #372 to slide through the optical scan. Got back to the car and was overwhelmed with emotion. Cried with relief.
Now I’m off to do my errands. Feels like a weight has been lifted. Will be happy dancing through the rest of the day.

It’s been steadily raining here in South Jersey. Who cares? I’ve got sunshiiiine on a cloudy day! My guy!

The parking lot was half-filled and I thought there would be a long wait inside. Walked into the voting station with only one couple ahead of me and the usual two voting booths in place for our district (LOTS of poll peeps as they were accommodating two districts today). My eyes whelled as I pushed the *vote now* button! To give perspective, at 11AM, I was voter #1165; even during a fierce local election, at the end of the day, I’ve never been more than #250. WOW!!

I too will be changing my name at the end of the day! :-)))

==================================================

I know to people who don’t hunt, dead animals gives them the willies. No animals at all in my voting place but plenty at home including a bobcat pelt (complete with stuffed head) and many whitetail bucks. Just another part of the culture in hunting areas and hunting families so welcome to West Virginia as well.

To All Mudflatters: I don’t think WV is going to turn blue this election. I think the race will be close but the NRA did their thing here with the hunting culture here in the last week and told them that Obama was going to not only take away their guns but also raise the price of ammunition so high they can’t afford it. Then there was the “secret””hidden” video of Obama saying he was going to “bankrupt” companies who used coal. So many lies. I’ve just about had it with the lies. I am going to try and push forward some kind of legislation here to ban “lies” in political advertising. Lying is not free speech IMHO and it has to stop. Even the newspapers print editorials that are full of out and out lies under the auspices of free speech and opinion. I am just sick of the lies. Did I say how sick of the lies I am? How can you trust a president (or any other pol) who would lie even before elected?

If you haven’t been to Andrew Sullivan’s Daily Dish yet today, it well worth the visit. People are blogging from all over the country their voter experiences. By the time I had read the fifth one my eyes were filled with tears.

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/

Here’s an example – From Los Angeles

Got up at 6:00am to vote. Put on my sweatshirt and my jeans that reek of Korean barbecue. I arrived at my polling place, a church, at 6:15. I counted. I was number 50 in line. We still had 45 minutes before the polling place opened. You had to stand. You coudn’t sit or even lean against the building. It rained all night. The sidewalk was wet. When the polls opened…there were 200 people waiting. Some in heels. Some in ties. Some in pajamas. Lots of hair pulled back in ponytails. Lots of baseball caps. Dodgers. Red Sox. Indians.

The line stretched from the church to the Burger King around the corner. Kinda fitting. That’s America. Faith and french fries. I watched people walk out with their “I voted” stickers. You could see the smiles…and a few tears. An older woman got her ballot and told the poll worker…”I’ve voted my entire life, but this is what I have been waiting for.”

I ditto that sentiment.
“I’ve voted my entire life, but this is what I have been waiting for.”

What a glorious day to be an American!

For those of you who don’t know, Andrew Sullivan has given over his blog (daily dish) entirely to election reportage, anecdote, pics, stories today. From Dartmouth came this (the last paragraph had me in tears). It brings home the momentousness of this day in yet another example.
—-

Those who are wondering if the youth will turn out ought to see what I saw this morning.

One well-known government professor here told me that she has never seen so many students vote in the first hour of voting as she saw this morning. And I’ve never seen so many students up and alert at this hour. They’re normally stumbling out of bed to make it to their 10 a.m. courses. Today, the campus has been buzzing for hours this morning. It appears that many of them decided to go to the polls as groups of twos, threes, fours and more when the polls opened at 7 a.m. The number of students I saw by 8 a.m. walking around with “I voted” stickers on is astonishing.

At breakfast, I sat next to a table of four black students, all of whom had voted. The three men were wearing ties. I asked them why. The answer: It was their first election, and they wanted to mark the occasion.

Welcome to the first day of the rest of your lives, mudpuppies!

Howdy!

I’d like to thank AKM and all the wonderful folks here for helping me remain sane ever since Palin was tapped for VP. I have found the comments here to be informative and inspirational. It has given me great hope for our country’s future.

I voted first thing this morning – took only about 40 minutes. I was dreading using the screen voting machine which I believe we had for the last election. Fortunately, we’ve switched to the optical scan paper ballots (which I think the entire country should be required to use), so the whole process was quick and painless, plus it leaves a nice paper trail.

Thanks again!

Just got the results of a mini poll of Choctaws here…… ALL OBAMA!
When I went to vote, a Choctaw elder called me over to the car (she was waiting for her niece) and told me she couldn’t vote. She hadn’t registered. I have talked to a few elders and this is the case for them as well. Crap One thing is for sure, my friend and I are going to be very active getting people registered.

We moved to Alabama this summer & were late to register to vote. As we drove to our assigned polling place, we passed another one closer to where we live, with lots of campaign signs. Our polling place had NO signs or campaigners at all. Just a policeman directing traffic. We learned that a number of people around us in the voting line had also registered late. When we got into the polling place, we were told that the machines had broken down & we’d have to vote by filling in a paper ballot with a pen.

I really wonder how many of those ballots will be recorded….

I want to report from the red panhandle of Florida. The polling places in our area have only a short wait now, I think early voting has really helped. No real problems except a sprinkler system that decided to sprinkle on some folks in a short line. Our satellite office does not have enough volunteers. I have been running mostly, canvassed a little, now a short break for lunch. I met an undecided voter this AM – how can you still be undecided? I hope we convinced her to vote for Obama, but her mind was full of the rumors about Barack. Later I will be calling voters out west to try to will them to vote. Even if this is called early, we still want a large turnout out west.

Once the results from the west coast are in, I’m cracking open a big bottle of Aussie chardonnay – sorry Alaska and Hawaii, I won’t be able to wait on you, but I know you will do the right thing.

What is mental healthcare care like in Alaska? God help you long-suffering AK taxpayers. Long after Governor Palin is just a blip in the collective memory of Alaskans (and a number in the penal sysyem, lol), you’ll be still paying for her and Trig’s ongoing care.

I had to get up from the keyboard, so I put on a Hawaiian shirt and walked over to the nearest polling place. About 10AM, and a delightful partly cloudy morning in San Jose. One of the rare days when the sky looks like the Midwest.

There were about half a dozen voters, but the site was clearly set up for way more. The staff said there had been a short line earlier. This is in a pretty working-class neighborhood, so I’d imagine that the crowds will be bigger after work. Maybe I’ll check back around four or five.

Whabs, this is for you.

On Sunday I was walking up 8th in Ballard toward Crown Hill (coming home from the Goodwill on 65th). At 85th I saw a woman putting MaCain/Palin signs in the median strip. Kinda wondered what would possess her to do that in a seriously blue bubble, but whaddevah, right? A few hours later I was at the same intersection and noticed that Obama/Biden signs had sprouted right next to the McCain signs. No one had removed the McCain signs, but had neutralized them nonetheless.

To me, that’s a great metaphor for what’s happening today. The Republicans have painted themselves into a corner, and the Obama campaign has triggered a response from all corners of the country that is neither hostile nor destructive, but highly vigilant and quick to act. And we will win.

That said, I wish I were as confident that we won’t end up with *gack* Dino Rossi as our governor.

It’s time to stand up. What can she do to us? To me? I’m not worried about it. Her 15 minutes of fame are hopefully over today. Time for Alaskans to take back Alaska from her, from Ted, from Randy Reudrich, from Don Young, Fred Dyson, etc etc………..

Why can’t WE be vindictive? Why can’t we do what it takes to ensure that she’s held accountable?

My BOSS BOSS is a HUGE Obama supporter. She voted for Obama. My BOSS has been kind of hinting he was an Obama supporter and a good guy when it came to certain things, but something always stunk. I just got this vibe because he was new he did not want to cause waves. I knew this when he said that he was going to rip my colleague a new asshole and bombard her with work and 2 days later started handing me MORE work than I could handle, while colleague still did the same old crap.

Now that he has passed his 3 month mark and can only get fired for cause (no more for 3 months can fire without a reason contract), his colors have changed basically.

Anyway, a few days ago, he accidentally slipped that he was not sure who he was voting for. This was an obivous sign that he was voting McCain. Needless to say…I asked him and he voted for McCain.

SO, I use to LOVE my job (part time job) before he started. The person who was here before him use to do all of the stuff HE has passed on to me to do: moving furniture and stuff! HELLO, I do AP/AR and figure out how much money we have spent on various things and that was WHAT I WAS HIRED TO DO! HE is suppose to do this stuff, but got my BOSS BOSS to make it PART of my job with others…..Yes, I am pissed and do not want to do this work is the BIGGEST problem. Try coding and authorizing hundreds of thousands of dollars spent every month to be interrupted to get a chair from the basement of the building or move tables and furniture out of the basement, closets, or offices!?!?!?!?

Take the new responsibilities which are not something I want to do nor was part of my job when hired and how I feel about him (the BOSS), I have my 2nd interview with him and the BOSS BOSS on Friday and I am contemplating what I would do if I get the job full time. I want it and feel I would take it, but I just do not trust this person (he lies a lot and asks me to cover for him and I will not) and have not liked work as much as I use to. Well, apparently, this finance company I interviewed at last week has me as 1 of the 3 people they are considering and I am suppose to go back for a 2nd interview as well.

SO TORN! What do you guys think about this person?

As many of you are aware – my bosses are very Pro-Repub.

We discussed the election this morning, as they are letting us time to VOTE (which is very nice) I do know my one little vote for Obama has been cancelled about a half dozen times already – but am hoping and praying Obama wins (by a comfortable margin to prevent any doubts)

However, this morning, I saw something I hadn’t seen before on my bosses faces – concern (perhaps the realization that this election will not be going their direction )- a bit of fear – (of the unknown Obama) They are hanging tough with the talking points – socialism / full wage & bonus’s for poor workers / taking “our guns” – 2nd Amendment rights / higher taxes / Ayers / loss of any possible control of Senate / House / and White House

I talk about Birth Control for their daughters – denying them rights to their own bodies. Paying for rape exams. That McCain records do not support either women or military persons — He’ll support the corporate structure that benefits military defense but not the people who are IN the military or served (disabled vets / retired / those that didn’t make the military their career but as a way to obtain a college degree )

[ Literally, an arm or a leg is a high cost to obtain an education ]

We each have our opinions – I respect theirs – this is their source of income (as mine) but they are looking at it from “their business perspective” I hope they will respect mine ~~ regardless which way this election goes.

We’ve talked a lot about what happens after Obama wins… what will be the best outlets for our vigilance, energy, newly found communities, etc. One thing we simply must do is this:

Stop watching Fox News. Stop talking about Fox News. Stop referring to Fox News. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Our response should be much like our response to trolls. We must stop feeding them. The best punishment is being rendered invisible. I listened to Ed Schultz yesterday. He said the same. Fox and its reprehensible pretense that their sleaze is news must be cut off from the Mainstream in whatever ways we are able to do so.

Of course getting behind the groups that are working for media reform would be one way. Another would be protesting, letter writing, boycotting advertizers. But, as many of our trolls would attest, there’s nothing quite so humiliating as being rendered invisible.

Not a crumb…

@Democrat G —

Long term view — will staying in your current job with this lying slacker steal your soul???? If the answer is yes, you’ve got to explore other options.

Just had this conversation with a dear friend the other day. She got the promotion/opportunity that she had long since deserved, and it is eating her alive. She said that she’s been going home in tears at least twice a week. She has been working for the same company (apart from a takeover/buyout about 10 yrs ago) for almost 30 years. So, I asked her, what are you going to DO about it?

My husband has just changed employers. The most laid-back, nicest guy, always with his nose to the grindstone, golden-boy. He had a high-profile job, lots of recognition from bosses for jobs well-done. But he was getting cranky! He was unhappy with his job, even with the kudos, he did not feel that he was an integral part of the process. I started razzing him about getting mean at work (he’d tell me stories, and it was like he was talking about someone else, because he was describing someone that could not possibly be my sweet wonderful husband!). Anyway, he was offered another job, this job has meant HUGE changes for our family. The money is not better. We are all separated for 8 months while he lives away from the girls & me. But, the long-term view is great for him and our family. He is really happy with his new job. His old job offered him a full year’s salary to stay (which is a lot of money), he told them no, it’s not about the money.

Anyway, back to my friend, who I hadn’t spoken to since husband left for his new job. Talked to her about our decisions, how we arrived at them, and she said “If the job starts changing who you are, it’s time to go, and I think that I am getting there.”

So, can you do this job, work with this person who is most likely going to be the very WORST boss that you have ever had and not have it spill over into who you are, your family life, etc.? If the answer is no, you really need to look for other options.

That’s my opinion…

On a positive note, husband is coming back to town tonight for a week! Hopefully we will have two things to celebrate — him & President Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dem G:

I agree with Martha. If your boss is asking you to lie for him and playing favorites or blowing hot and cold, that is probably not a health workplace for you or anyone else.

If you’ve got a second interview, that’s usually a VERY good sign they are interested in you. Go prepared to explain why you are leaving your current job, but keep the negativity out of it or they will wonder if you aren’t the negative one.

Best of all possible worlds: Go to the interview for your current job with the new offer already in hand. Then you can politely explain, in front of both your boss and his boss why you are unhappy in your current position and thanks, but no thanks, for that job to nowhere!

(Sorry, couldn’t help myself)

I agree absolutely with Martha. Been there, done that. The best thing is to get out before you are burnt out and angry. It always gets worse. There is a site out there somewhere on crazy bosses. Some stories are funny but most are terrifying. Lots of sociopaths in the business world.

Bobg….brilliant. I posted my concern because my friend is quite high up in the Dem world here, and I do trust him. But I do NOT trust SP…..so I was contemplating origination of recall/impeach/petition activities, a task force, whatever is possible. Still am, but am looking at all sides……. Of all the suggestions, probably getting her own talk show or talent(?) show going would be best. Keep her in somebody’s limelight but out of ours. Let’s work on her trip to Mars, though.

Democrat G……agreeing with Martha and HickTown…… your BOSS BOSS doesn’t deserve your energy. Go toward a place you will be appreciated, and don’t look back.

Guys I live in Fountain Hills, Arizona – GOP land. This is my first time voting. I braced myself for a long day – ate a hearty breakfast, went armed with food and water, wearing comfy shoes, expecting to camp out – and hey, guess what – no lines – zilch – even the booths (a couple) were empty. This was around 10am. I was SOOOO surprised – I thought I had come to the wrong place. The poll workers looked grumpy – there were McCain-Palin signs outside. No wonder!! I feltl thrilled to vote. I am cooking up a storm for a big party this evening. Wheeeeee!!

Hello, again.

We have all voted on our little island in Washington State. I just returned home from helping a few people get their ballots in today. The sun has come out, and it is a lovely afternoon. I stopped briefly to pick up a few things at the grocery store, and the smiles are nonstop. Everyone is so happy to be getting rid of the Bush.

Now I keep the faith, yes we can, and hope and pray.

When a person tells you who they are the first time, believe them. You are headed for a lot of grief in this position. Do you want to go there? Can you handle it, and for how long?
