Ted Stevens AWOL Juror Lied! Fled Trial to Watch Horse Race!

3 11 2008

More from the “You Can’t Make This Stuff Up” Department. Remember Juror #9 – the one that all the other jurors wanted off the jury because of her violent outbursts and rude behavior? We thought SHE was the wingnut juror… Not so. Turns out the honor goes to Juror #4 – the one who disappeared during deliberations, later saying that she had to fly to California to attend her father’s funeral.

Her name is Marian Hinnant, and it turns out – no dead father, and no funeral.

Instead, Hinnant had a plane ticket to see the Breeder’s Cup at the Santa Anita race track and didn’t want to miss it, she told the judge this morning, in what sounded like completely irrational and perhaps even delusional remarks.

“I just wanted to go to the Breeder’s Cup,” she told reporters after a hearing the judge held to find out why she left town and lost contact with him, forcing him to replace her as a juror just hours before the jury found Stevens guilty.

Hinnant also told reporters that she would have found the Alaska senator guilty had she remained on the jury.

“He was guilty, but these other guys are just as guilty,” she said, referring to other members of Congress.

Yup, she just wanted to see a horse race and took off, abandoning the political trial of the century that would determine the fate of the longest sitting Republican member of the Senate. Yup, she had a ticket and didn’t want to miss it. In a trial that Stevens has referred to as a “circus”, no doubt he will try find some way to use this bizarre story to try to add legitimacy to his appeal of the verdict.

“She apologizes to the court. In fact, her father did not die,” her attorney said. “The story about her father was just one that popped into her head.

But Hinnant cut in, and in a thick Kentucky drawl, gave a rambling, incoherent and baffling monologue about her former employers in the horseracing industry in Kentucky. She mentioned drugs, wiretaps and horseracing, but made little sense.

“I’m not the one who was selling the drugs, I’m not the one who was doing the drugs,” she said.

The judge let Juror #4 go stating, “I’m convinced you were not able to deliberate.”

Even after it’s over, this trial is still the gift that keeps giving, and it only get’s more bizarre. I know Stevens will complain, but it seems to me he ended up getting a break by getting this wingnut OFF the jury!

Stevens, in a last ditch effort to regain his lost momentum will air a two minute infomercial in Alaska tonight. Is he perhaps hoping to turn this back into…..a horse race?

If you tried to sell this election season as a Hollywood movie script, no one would buy it. TOO UNBELIEVEABLE. And yet, here we are, in the middle of this crazy drama.

Here’s hoping this doesn’t get ConvicTed any sympathy votes and/or grounds for appeal.

OT- I just posted this on previous thread but wanted to share it here too. Forgive my redundancy but I am too proud of my Obamacan not to….

After spending Saturday at the Obama Little Havana office here in Miami, my Obamacan was blown away by the energy and excitement. The mix of volunteers was wonderful and the place was packed. We did calls, canvassed neighborhoods and then picked up dinner for the hungry troops back at HQ. He loved it! As effective as I have tried to be with Repubs and Undecideds, he has been really good with other Repubs who are surprised by his passion for Obama. You have to understand that he has voted Repub his entire life except for ‘04 when he lost a bet over WMD in Iraq with me and voted for Kerry. We are small business owners who are in “that” income bracket, pay for health ins for our employees, and plan to grow our business substantially this year (thankfully). We truly believe that Obama is best for the nation and best for us. We even made sure all our employees had the time off to vote early. But more importantly, our “conservative” friends have been secretly telling my husband that they are leaning Obama too but not telling anyone. He has been talking to them as a financial conservative Repub who is solidly for Obama. Even his father who is always in for a good debate with me (so lopsided since I am a political junkie and usually am able to trump him on false historical data) said “well, I hope you are ready to support your mother and I WHEN Obama wins”. This is huge coming from him….it must pain him to acknowledge that McCain is losing. Or maybe, just maybe he is seeing the light and doesn’t want anyone to know? One can HOPE after all, right?

Go Obama, Go Blue Florida!!!

Someone on the other thread asked for the cookie recipe I posted but I can’t find their post. Here is the recipe.

I keep seeing references to cookies today (Damn, we are confident. Isn’t it wonderful?) here is a recipe for you. These are Hungarian Honey Cookies.

My grandparents came to this country from Austria-Hungary in 1908. This is a recipe that my grandmother brought with her. This is my favorite cookie. These cookies are keep extremely well (they contain no shortening) and are great for mailing to servicemen and women.

4 cups of flour
1 1/2 cups of sugar
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
5 egg yolks
1 egg white (set additional egg whites aside)
1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon of ground allspice
1 cup of honey, warmed

Sift dry ingredients on a board or in a bowl. Add eggs and enough honey to make a medium stiff dough. roll out to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into 2-inch rounds (I use a juice glass.) Brush with slightly beaten egg whites. Dip in a mixture sugar, cinnamon and finely chopped nuts. Place on a greased, lightly floured cookie sheet. Bake approximately 10 minutes or until lightly brown, at 350 degrees.

For colorful Holiday cookies you can use a cinnamon-sugar mix colored by a couple of drops of food coloring.

“You will do your duty as citizens. You will act as jurors when called.”
‘cuz here’s the alternative: what … 30 days? in the slammer. Contempt of court, or false ststements, or sommat?
I’ve been called four times in the last twenty years, always willing. When the jury questioning gets to the “What do you do for work” part, I’m always excused … twenty years law enforcement background. Always by the defense..damned fools never realize that after all the lies I’ve seen told to get convictions by LE personell, I’d be much more inclined to favor the defense.

BTW – thank you for the video the vote stuff, if it was here that I found it. My 9 year old was appalled when he saw what happened in the 2000 &2004 elections in Florida and Ohio (especially). He got a camcorder for his birthday and I asked him if he wants to take it to the polls with me tomorrow (the kids have an inservice day on election day – how cool!!). So he is going to film our pollling place in VA. We are way out in the country part of Stafford Co (still sort of Northern VA, but with lots of country for good measure). We’re new here so I’ve never voted in this precinct before. I remember voting in Eagle River, AK at the Lions Club (always came out smelling like smoke). It was always busy, but never a long wait, and everyone was so friendly. In Alaska there’s not a lot of people so you could really feel the difference each vote made. One of the most amazing things about this election is that I think we’ll feel that same way all around the country. I can’t wait to go and vote tomorrow!

A single-digit race in Alaska?
by kos
Mon Nov 03, 2008 at 10:45:03 AM PST

Alaskan pollster Hayes Research has some crazy numbers:

Hayes Research (D). 11/2. Likely voters. MoE 4.9% (No recent results)

McCain (R) 46.6
Obama (D) 43.9

Hayes has both Begich (in the Senate race) and Berkowitz (in the House race) leading their respective corrupt incumbent Republicans. The congressional races will look good for us on Election Night (or next-day morning for you East Coasters). But those presidential toplines? Wow. And I’ve gotten word from another campaign in Alaska that their internal polling also shows the presidential coming down to single-digits. Obama won’t win Alaska, but it won’t be a blowout either. If this polls are right, Alaska is headed for true battlegrounds status in the next few cycles.

As for Sarah Palin:

Thinking about Sarah Palin, would you say your opinion of her has changed since she was named the Vice Presidential candidate on August 29th?

(IF YES) Has the change been positive or negative?

Yes, positive 11.3%
Yes, negative 37.0%
No change 49.1%

Too bad she’s no longer the nation’s most popular governor.

I’m reposting this since it was last on the previous thread. It’s in response to a discussions about Christians (with or without quotations) and the environment. I think my overall point might be that (following Obama’s lead) it might be time to let all the generalizing rest a bit. There are good folk doing good work everywhere …even among the groups we generalize about with our quotation marks. Just my two cents.
hose Hussein hotrod

@Kat loves wolves:
and also that “Christian” thing whereby they believe the earth is here for people to use up, very few “Christians” worry about green issues (I really do think it has something to do with the rapture belief).

By “Christians” I mean the right wing, hate filled, intolerant, dark Christian variety, so please don’t be offended, I don’t mean you.
———
Kat and others:
I think it is getting less and less easy to make these sorts of generalizations. I know there is a whole wing of the evangelical movement that believes that it’s literally a sin (against the Bible) to be destructive of “God’s good Creation”. I support one such group, even though I have no affiliation with them. I saw a very powerful documentary on Christians for the Mountains (WV) on Bill Moyers’ Journal sometime last year. They are trying to stop mountain-top removal. I send them money pretty regularly and always get a nice handwritten letter back from the Director himself (and he never tries to convert me:) ) If you’re interested in their story:

Re: Long wait times to vote:

Keep in mind that the long lines for early voting won’t necessarily mean the wait times will be multiplied tomorrow. Where I live there is only one early voting location, but numerous polling place on election day itself. I believe that’s the case with most localities.

So, if a quarter to a third of the electorate has already voted, and the remaining 65 – 75% will be split up between many, many more polling places, I hope it will not be too overwhelming. I’m sure there will be long lines, but maybe it won’t be 6 or 8 hours like some of the early voting has been.

Here’s hoping, anyway.

Reposting this because it was at the tail end of the last thread and it is a very important issue.

APRN reported this morning, Monday, Nov. 3. The Bush Adminstration is moving the control of all federal clean water oversight in Alaska to the State of Alaska. “It will happen gradually over time,” it was said.

We all know our governor opposed the clean water initiative and that Alaska’s DEC is woefully lacking in enforcement on clean water issues in Alaska.

Does anyone know the particulars of how this came about? What particular slimeball lobbyists and politicians supported this decision? And how can we address this?

Clean water is essential to healthy salmon and our health in general, and the Bush Administration has no right to take the protection that we have come to count on from the feds away from us.

I suspect mining company, oil company lobbyists at work here (they hate to pay to keep the water clean). And who know what other nefarious characters?

Sounds like an investigative job for AKM and associates. Let us know what you all know and how we can help. Any legal Muddies out there from anywhere want to weigh in?

One more reason to give the Republicans across the nation major boots in their tahooties.

Smart guys! “We are the middle class and we are tired of paying for everybody. The best President we had was Clinton – everybody had jobs and we lived well. Obama will make it like that again for the middle class.” Yeah!

ps – I found on my bookshelf a mystery by Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo called “The Man on the Balcony” which is Swedish. Bought a long time ago.

Diverting to S.P. STILL NO MEDICAL RECORDS- and there won’t be any now for certain. So, we can assume that there are bombshells in there- or they would have been released. At some point I am sure they WILL get out..

Of the 4 main candidates, her records should have been the most “normal” with the least illnesses or medical problems. Yet they were not released.

I can’t wait to see what is in there- as they WILL come out someday!

Carrying this over as it may not get seen at the bottom of the previous post, now that everyone has moved over here:

The issue with EPA and water stuff here is that EPA has turned over the NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) permitting to Alaska. EPA has been administering the program for Alaska for years, and Alaska has been working for about 3 years now to have the program turned over, or delegated, to the Department of Environmental Conservation. Nothing is really going to change in the way permits are issued, except that it will be done by state employees who have a better sense of how things need to be done in Alaska than EPA employees in Seattle.

Here is a link to the page that provides explanation:

Umm, home made cookies! I doubt if I will have time to be that exotic, but I did buy two brownie mixes (chocolate chunk) to make for tomorrow night.

We are having “All American” food (burgers, dogs, chili, fries, yeah, i know, I know!) with an invite for anyone in the neighborhood to “drop in” to watch the returns. I want to be comfy in my own house, not watching at the hotel with the other local Dem workers.

Besides, our (DEM) Congressman is going to get blown out (Tim Mahoney) because he couldn’t keep his pants zipped, so there will likely be a bit of boohooing at the local Dem rally even if Barry does (from my typing fingers to doG’s ears!) prevail.

McCain + Schwarzi (the big draw) in Columbus OH barely filled the 20,000-seat half full (let’s give ’em 10,000).

Obama in Cincinatti OH – 20,000 people
Obama in Cleveland OH – 80,000 people

McCain in Miami FLA – 10,000
McCain in Tampa, FLA – barely 1,000

Obama + Hillary in Orlando FLA – 60,000 (20,000 inside, 40,000 outside)
Obama + Bill in Kissimmee FLA – 35,000

Can you see where I’m going?

I read the newsweek article, several times- Alter has been an Obama supporter since the beginning. His point, which is valid, is there are a large number of uninformed voters- which is sad, as knowledge at this time/election is critical. At the end, Alter says he thinks American voters will do the right thing and elect Obama.

Just heard McLame on CNN at a rally- he is now lumping everyone of his talking points together: standupfightvictorymeasuringthedrapesjoetheplumberdontgiveup (whew) plus a new one: Mac is Back- I wanted to ask back from where…

I have a brownie recipe I got from the Washington Post many years ago: Sinful Brownies from a Mix-

use any brownie mix (I like BCrocker with Hersheys syrup best); replace the water with the same amount of table cream, add three eggs instead of two, then add 1 1/2 t. of vanilla. I fold in a mix of dark chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips (you can add chopped pecans or walnuts), then bake as directed. If you live at high altitude like me, follow those directions-

Make sure you cool completely before you cut them. These brownies have been a big hit everywhere I taken them; I rarely make scratch brownies anymore (except the one made with Kaulua (oops, spelling ability has deserted me).

More info on the clean water thing. Apparently most other states (45) already do this which will make this more difficult for Alaskans to address, and there is cause for real concern in Alaska.

Juneau Empire Story on this clean water issue
http://www.juneauempire.com/stories/110208/loc_351024172.shtml

“As of Friday, DEC takes control over wastewater discharge permits for timber harvesting, seafood processing and domestic dischargers, such as municipalities. Existing permits from the EPA will turn into state permits.

Over the next three years, in phases, the state will take over permitting of federal facilities in Alaska, storm water, mining, and finally oil and gas permits, cooling water and everything else.

A gradual transition was requested by industry representatives, said Water Division director Lynn Kent. It also gives DEC a chance to learn the program.

Gov. Sarah Palin said in a statement the transition would give Alaska more control over its natural resources…”

Is he perhaps hoping to turn this back into…..a horse race?

The “neighs” have it…

FYI, the Obama rally in Anchorage (without a candidate there) was bigger than the the McCain rally in Tampa this morning (with the candidate there).

~~

Thanks for the link to the McCain rally – I thought I’d read/heard that his attendance was dropping like a rock. At one of the PA rallies the campaign allegedly bused in several thousand school kids to make it appear like a large crowd was there.

Just read on the Comcast.net website that Indiana could be a bellweather state:

“Some of the earliest returns in Tuesday’s U.S. presidential election could provide big clues about the outcome.

Trends in the race between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain could become clear soon after the first polls begin to close at 6 p.m. EST in Indiana.

Obama and McCain are locked in a surprisingly tight duel in Indiana, a Midwestern state that has voted Republican in every White House race since 1964. A breakthrough win for Obama, or even a neck-and-neck struggle, would be an encouraging sign of broad strength for the senator from neighboring Illinois.’

http://www.comcast.net/articles/news-politics/20081103/POLITICS-US-USA-POLITICS-GUIDE/

I hate Comcast and have never looked at any of their reporting before but I have to admit that I kinda did a “gulp” when I read this and started to get nervous once again.

But if McCain appears to be cruising to a relatively easy win in Indiana it could signal trouble for Obama, who is challenging McCain in about a dozen states won in 2004 by Republican President George W. Bush.

Going to post this and have to leave.

My brother that just voted in Ohio called to tell me the details about voting but told me he is symptomatic again. He had cancer some years back. His glands are swollen and he is having night sweats. He is a student and has no insurance.
I am just sick over this. What is the problem in this country? I live with no insurance as does my daughter.
I think the people that make our decisions about healthcare must never have to dig in the couch for coins to buy milk or bread. They cannot relate.
We poor ones are not stupid and lazy. We did not choose to live in poverty. We don’t like it.
My brother is going for his masters in environmental science, my daughter is in school and I am heading back for a teaching degree. So many poor people are just surviving, not thriving.
Why as Americans can’t all have the basics? I think this is just so inhumane.
OMG. I am really feeling scared, sick and mad.
Damn. Can’t we do better than this?
The campaigning for this election has been embarrassing. It has not been about issues. Oh, yes, it has been about issues. I am wrong. It has brought out our racism, sexism and corruption to be displayed around the world. The superpower teaches the world about freedom and democracy.
How can we contemplate which healthcare program would be beneficial when we have stooped so low that one of our vp candidates compares herself to a pit bull wearing lipstick and people will vote for this stupidity. We aren’t getting a choice between two or more great options. Oh, no. One side is power hungry narcissistic jerks.

Please forgive any mistakes but I feel so sick and disgusted.

Back in the day I was a public defender (sort of) in Anchorage, and had a client who was sure that the Red Chinese had implanted a bug in his nose so they could read his thoughts. He came to court wrapped in aluminum foil under his clothes, to protect him from the “beams”. Everyone quietly agreed that the charges (and I forget what they were) would be dropped if the poor guy got psychiatric help.

This juror, who left a nationally important trial to watch a horse race, says her apartment is bugged, and raves on about drugs and conspiracies, sounds about the same, and the judge was right to let her go.
