Mudstock II in Chicago!

2 11 2008

Today in Chicago, a group of dedicated Mudflatters gathered for the second, in hopefully a long line of Mudstock events!  I was so thrilled to get the photos and great write-up of yet another real-life get-together of the Mudflats community!  Here’s the writeup from ‘Bec Hussein of Illinois’ complete with pictures from Bec and Shikago!

To make things interesting, three of the Mudflatters’ screen names are “Chicago”, “Chicago” and “Shikago”!  You can have fun figuring it out!

Well Chicagos, Shikago, and Chicagoans, the rest of us were with you in spirit!  Thanks for sharing your wonderful afternoon with us.

************************************************************************************************************

I’m heading back to the burbs on a train packed with Bears fans (yay – they won today) and American Girl Place visitors. I just had the loveliest experience, thanks to Mudflats, and that was attending our impromptu Mudstock II – Chicago. With a “can do” attitude, Shikago, Chicago, and I (Bec Hussein of Illinois) decided that a pre-election meet-up was possible. Shikago jumped into the planning full force, and surprised us with many special mementos for the day.

The appointed hour was 11:30 AM, Sunday, November 2. The gathering place was by what we all call “The Bean” in Millennium Park, just west of Lake Michigan in downtown (The Loop) Chicago. The magnificent sculpture is actually named “Cloudgate.” But we all have come to call it The Bean because of its bean shape. It is fast becoming one of Chicago’s most famous landmarks. We opted for it over gathering at “The Picasso” in Daley Plaza, where in past decades such a meet-up would most likely take place.

First on the scene was Shikago, with his cart of equipment featuring a small American flag. My daughter (Mudflats lurker) and I were happily greeted by Shikago. I pulled on my newly purchased yellow boots, as Shikago told us how the lovely bouquet of balloons he had spent his precious funds on were ordered to the trash bin by a park security person roving around on a Segway. Something about park rules against balloons around the sculpture.  A big disappointment, but we still were quite the attraction with our signs and all. Chicago soon arrived, my yellow boot Mudflats nametags were distributed, and more Mudpuppies came on the scene.

We were joined by Carla, USABarbie, lurker Liz and her husband Walt, and Joe (sorry, didn’t catch his screenname). Next,  arrived our very special guest, Lila Bang-WalMart, fresh from her appearance at Mudstock I in Pittsburg! She was in town for a medical convention and we were so thrilled that she chose to play a little hookey from that to join us, and hold a record for participating in BOTH pre-election Mudstocks! How ironic that Lila was staying at the “W” hotel for her visit here. As a special treat, she transformed herself to a Sarah Palin impersonator, posing for a photo holding the “Elect Walt Monegan Governor” sign that Shikago had made.

Shikago had his tripod set up for the group shots, and we happily posed. There were people all around and we may have received some startling looks, but no one assaulted us. I had printed up a few business cards with the Mudflats address, in case anyone asked about us. I was sorry not one was handed out.

As we walked a couple blocks to the restaurant, we went past the forming lineup of network trucks setting up for the big Tuesday night election rally. Eurovision was doing a live shot of The Bean in one corner.

As we enjoyed lunch at Pizano’s, there was a great exchange about who we were, what we did, where we lived, and of course, all kinds of election thoughts.  Another Mudflatter, (screen name Chicago) found us at the restaurant and she joined in the conversation. A short while later, USABarbie’s boyfriend arrived, another distinguished guest. He is closely involved in the set up of the giant Obama rally for Election Night and shared what a massive configuration of sound and technical equipment is being put in place.

Shikago is sadly without a ticket for the event, but is totally psyched to be part of it and will find a spot somewhere in the massive surrounding vicinity of the tickets-only section. USABarbie will be there too, of course, and I hope some of the massive sound equipment will reach out to wherever Shikago lands. Most of the rest of us have decided we prefer the comfort of our own homes that night, with our TVs blaring and computers whirling on Mudflats and all other possible information-ready Websites.

As we all departed for our trains, busses, planes and automobiles, Shikago presented us with a lovely packet of items he had created – including a Mudstock II tee-shirt iron-on transfer. A very thoughtful and generous person, that Shikago!

All at Mudstock II agree that our fascination and knowledge of Alaska has either been sparked or expanded, thanks to Mudflats. We learned that Joe has done extensive exploration of the State and he was eager to share suggestions of wonderful spots for us all to visit. I hope to head there during the next year. Others have already been, or, plan to return in the near future.

In closing, we send our very best Chicago greetings to all the other Mudflatters/Mudpuppies from Alaska and the other “49” states, Canada, Australia, and many places around the world. This has been a most welcoming, encouraging, and sanity-strengthening community during the election. Of course, we couldn’t be prouder to have the next president of the United States, Barack Obama, as a fellow-Chicagoan. We know the road ahead will still be rocky as the country pulls together. As Shikgao said in the special prayer/meditation he wrote and read to us before we ate — our country needs healing. Obama is the one to get this started.

Now that we found Mudflats, there is no way that we can stay away from those crazy Alaskan politics. We have to see a few other chapters of this story played out. Though we all need a little break from the all-consuming obsession that this election has become, we aren’t ready to leave Alaska on its own. So you are going to have Chicago, and all the rest of the Mudflats community, hanging in there to hear AKM report what happens next. We all know how we’d like the story to end! Let’s hope it includes a new Alaskan senator in Washington, an old one off to prison, a former state employee vindicated, and the brakes slammed on any notion that a particular Alaskan governor will be able to “rear her ugly head” in 2012!

Looks like you all had loads of fun. (Kinda) Wish I’d been there. Spent part of the day baking for the local Obama office instead though.

FYI – “Chicago” in the group photo is Carol (in Chicago)! Then there is Chicago with the brewskie and Mudstock sign, who met us at the restaurant. Everything is coming up Chicago these days! You will probably see some shots of The Bean and the rest of our beautiful city in the election night coverage.

InJuneau —- pie? That is so nice of you.

I just emailed my daughter the pie crust recipe.

No, didn’t get around to pie, but I made them oatmeal-dried blueberry cookies early in the day and then a loaf of bread with homemade current jelly in the evening. I didn’t have the energy or the fruit around for pie today…

Bec–by the way, I will get around to giving you travel tips over on the Forum one of these days, like maybe after the election when we all try to go back to having normal lives with time to do “normal” things…

You guys are awesome! And I LOVE “The Bean”–

Are there any Mudpuppies out there from the DC/Northern VA area going to the Obama rally in Manassas tomorrow (Monday) night? It’s the last campaign event before Barack flies home to Chicago for Election Day. I’ll be at the fairgrounds with 40,000 of our closest friends….

Good morning from the Old Continent! One day to go and counting! J-1 as they say here. All you guys who made it to Mudstock II are great and looks like you had a great time in a beautiful (and lucky) city on a beautiful day. No fun stories about meeting people who cam up to chat politics?

Didn’t mean to sound to cocky in my report about a win Tuesday — everyone STILL needs to vote – so it can definitely be a VICTORY party in Chicago. I know you are all doing your part, and more!

I do believe.. I do believe… I do believe.

I hope that when Obama wins it’ll be easier to talk the Big Guy chez moi that now is the time to be in the States. He is really getting fed up with the French system and the “erratic” decisions of our Pres here. Hopefully an Obama win will convince him that things CAN get better in the US and will help him get over those negative feelings about Americans.

If the worse happens, I can only say that we have a 200 square meter apt. and I will assume that by the morning of Nov 6 there should be quite a number of mudflatters in self-imposed political exile lining up outside my door looking for a couch to sleep on!

Husband is getting so fed up that all my time is being consumed by election thoughts and time spent hovering between computer and CNN (sadly, my only tv connection). He is fed up with my talking about the polls, the candidates, the election. His French mentality says “you have made your choice and you have voted, why do you have to listen to all the crap and stories and arguments? But then he goes and turns on the French news on any French tv channel and – all day all night it’s now about the American election! HA! LOL!

Night, braveny!

Jamie, Floridian in France, your hubby is French, right? Has he ever been to the States. I assume he speaks English as most countries’ peoples speak several languages.

I am going to Canada. Either Vancouver ‘coz of the Asian population or Winnipeg because I love cold and snow. I am hoping it’s not necessary, but it’s my contingency plan.

Hey, at least your prez has a hot wife. That’s got to count for–nothing.

Fortunately with all the talk of pies, I haven’t yet made one recently (now that batch of brownies from a week ago that 6 adults and 4 kids nearly did in in one evening is another story…). The cookies and first loaf of bread today went to the Obama office, so I’m still ahead of the weight curve on today’s baking. The chocolate, however, is another matter, as we bought two huge bags for Halloween and only had 14 t-or-t’ers!

Husband is French and speaks extremely fluent French and no Europeans, and the French in particular THINK that they speak english but don’t or very poorly. He has been to the States and, like a typical French husband, goes every time thinking he’s gonna be miserable with those Americans and ends up having a fabulous time and lots of fun with all the Americans. He’s just stubborn (a French trait?).

And NO our “First Lady” is definitely NOT HOT. Don’t like her, never have.

LA, boy, kittehs and pecan pie. I am mighty tempted. I should do a tour of remaining Mudstock rallies. I think that would be a blast!

Jamie, Floridian in France, I can understand your hubby’s way of thinking. This is the first year I’ve followed the race at all because in the past, I knew for whom I was voting, so why bother? It’s different this time, and it delights me that the world is watching with such a careful eye.

InJuneau aka Wrangler Tractor That One Hussein, I can feel my thighs expand as I read what you’ve made. I buy chocolate for the kiddies, and then turn out the lights. So, of course, I am forced to eat all the candy by myself!

@asianHusseingrrl”that one”MN (23:32:05) :

Though my husband will not talk about the election except for a few passing comments, is TERRIFIED that McCreepy might win and does see that as the straw that will finally break the camel’s back (the complete downfall of the American Empire, which he has predicted for a while – confirmed to him by the Housing/Wall Street fiasco). All French people are holding their breath waiting for Obama to be elected – someone educated, brilliant, diplomatic, and, yes, elite (a positive thing in Europe and a quality looked for in their politicians).

Europeans are amazed at 1) the stupidity and recklessness of Bush, 2) that Americans could have elected Bush TWICE and 3) that Bush is still in office and has not been impeached a long time ago. Finally electing Obama will allow Europeans once again to look at Americans with respect.

Jamie, Floridian in France, I wouldn’t be surprised if Carla did a few pornos. She certainly enjoys flaunting her flesh. Her sister is MUCH more attractive.

I can’t really argue with the French’s thinking about Americans and W. since I have been pondering the gross stupidity of the last eight years. I think, at this point, we are just so ready to be done with Bush that we want him as far away as possible as soon as possible.

I sincerely hope, however, that he and his cronies do some jail time. It is inconceivable to me that Clinton was impeached for his dalliance with Monica Lewinsky, but W. and pals are so far immune to being impeached. I can’t wrap my brain around it.

How long ago did she give an interview saying that she doesn’t believe in marriage as an institution (she is the fruit of an extra-marital affair) and now she is all gushing about “I am a nice Catholic Italian girl and marriage with Nicolas” is forever and “marriage and family” blah blah blah. Yes to a Mudflats III in California, north, south or in between – I’m in the San Fernando Valley (Woodland Hills) – there have to be a few more of us Mudpuppies in LA!

If you have friends and family in California who will be voting on Prop 8, please feel free to forward the following:

They came first for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Martin Niemoeller’s poem inscribed on a stone in the New England Holocaust Memorial

On Tuesday we have an unprecedented opportunity in California, to inscribe into our state constitution an amendment that takes away fundamental rights.

Why should you care, you might ask. You’re not gay, so why should it matter.
Let me tell you why it matters.

If you think that a yes vote on Prop 8 will shield your children from seeing same-sex couples, you’re wrong. Those couples are here, and Prop 8 won’t change that.

If you think that a yes vote on Prop 8 will strengthen your traditional marriage, think again. Opposite sex couples have done a pretty good job all on their own of destroying the sanctity of marriage.

If you think that a yes vote on Prop 8 will save your church, it can’t. Plenty of churches refuse to marry couples that the state deems marriageable, as is their right under the First Amendment.

If you think that a yes vote on Prop 8 will stop gay marriage from being taught in schools, get a reality check. We’re having enough trouble getting schools to teach anything more than what’s on the standardized test, and they’re going to devote class time to gay marriage? Really, now.

Then what will Prop 8 do?

Prop 8 will open the floodgates. Not the floodgates to the “gay agenda.” What Prop 8 will do is send a message loud and clear that fundamental rights in California are up for grabs.

Easy to be smug about this when you’re in the majority, when you’re sure that you’re from the “pro-America” part of America. But – how can you be so sure? What happens when your country of origin attacks the United States? Ready to be rounded up at the race track and sent to an internment camp in the high desert? You think it can’t happen (again)? Why not? Let’s just trot out a proposition, amend our constitution (majority wins!), and voila!

Perhaps – as Martin Niemoeller so famously observed of another period marked by the steady, deadly erosion of fundamental rights – when they come for you, there will be no one left to speak up.

Please think about that when you decide whether to inscribe the deprivation of fundamental rights into our state constitution. Who will be left to speak up for you?

Send a message that your fundamental rights are not up for grabs. Send a message that hate is not a fundamental value in California. Vote NO on Prop 8.

Please forward this message.

p.s. You need the “wonk” version? Here it is:
If you think that it was “just a bunch of liberal, activist judges” that got us to this point, think again. In May, 2008, a majority of the justices on the California Supreme Court voted that the denial of marriage to same-sex couples was an unconstitutional denial of rights as guaranteed by the California Constitution. Of these justices, all but one had been appointed by a Republican governor. These are conservative, thoughtful justices, who have been on the Supreme Court for decades and who have been retained through majority vote numerous times. Was their wisdom and judgment good enough for you yesterday but not today?

And perhaps the real problem here is our initiative system. We usually think of constitutional rights as being something beyond the reach of “whatever the majority wants today.” “Majority rules” – that’s legislation, right? Isn’t a constitutional right supposed to be more enduring than legislation? If a constitutional right can be determined by majority vote, then what good is a right? Why bother having a constitution, if there are no limits to “majority rules”? Unfortunately, California adopted an initiative system many decades ago whereby our constitutional rights have been placed up for grabs, to be determined by whatever the majority wants today. Unlike the national constitution (or other states’ constitutions), it doesn’t take a 2/3 vote of anyone, or a ratification by any ¾ majority, to amend our state constitution. We vote for propositions to amend the constitution right alongside propositions that are statutes. We already live in a dangerous situation in California, where our fundamental rights have little protection from the whims of the majority. A vote for Prop 8 will make that theory a reality.

And, finally, try this one on for size: in California, it takes a 2/3 vote of the legislature to pass a budget, and super-majorities of the people to enact tax increases and school bonds. But it takes only a simple majority to deny people basic fundamental rights. What is wrong with us when we protect our pocketbooks more than we protect our fundamental rights?

Jamie, Floridian in France , Michelle Obama has more class in her little finger than Carla Bruni does in her whole body. I don’t particularly care about affairs or marriage (though I don’t like the two to cross paths), but I DO care about being more than strictly ornamental.

As for Palin/Stevens, et al, it’s discouraging. One of the senators from MN, Norm Coleman, is in the middle of an ethics scandal, but he might still keep his seat.

The fact that four out of ten people think Palin COULD be president is beyond disheartening. I would be a better president, and that’s not saying much. At least I would be able to intuit that President Sarkozy wouldn’t just call me up to chat. In addition, I know more than Roe v. Wade, and I can name the newspapers I read. I guess I could be vice prez, at least.

Catwoman, hear hear! I gave money to no on Prop. Hate, and it is simply unfathomable to me that people want to legalize discrimination. Besides, it’s not like straight marriages have been doing so well for the last, oh, forever or so. I don’t see much sanctity in hetero marriages these days, so might as well let LGBT folk have a stab at being miserable, too!

I hear that the no side is winning, but only by a hair. I can’t believe that many people are giving in to fear and hatred.

Now I’m back, with coffee… Just want to say that Swedes find the corruption scandals amazing. In the last 10 years I can remember a Swedish politician being forced to resign because she bought a chocolate bar with her “work” credit card and a couple of others who had to resign for not paying their TV licence. Then there’s Carl Bildt who’s generally sleazy with dodgy links to mining companies, but I think he’s nothing compared to what you lot have to put up with. On the other hand, you can have political correctness gone mad (like the chocolate bar case).

I do so want the right guy to win this time, I’m so fed up of the boyf squirting coffee through his nostrils when someone mentions the US and democracy in the same sentence. He’s not even a political animal really…

One last thing about Carla Bruni – her so-called “style” was put together by John Galliano of Dior. She is someone who, on her own, dresses like a bourgeois french housewife – dark slacks and a sweater over the shoulder. Boring! She is dressed for official stuff by other people who do her no favor by putting her in skin-tight outfits.

And yeah, we don’t much like her husband either.

Good night asianHussein. Nice chatting and being catty with you!

Here is a story about Gay Marriage – my brother’s first, long-time, live-in girlfriend Julie (with whom he was a community organizer with ACORN) was, quite a number of years later one half of one of the six gay couples (with then girlfriend Hillary) that sued the state of Mass to be able to marry. I read an interview of her and she explained what made her do it. She and Hillary have a beautiful daughter together who, when the daughter (Anna?) was mayeb 6 or 7 decided to make a list of all the people she knew who were in love. She listed all the parents of her friends. when Julie asked why she and Hillary weren’t on the list, Anna replied, well, you aren’t married and only people who are married are in love. That is when they decided to fight for the right to marry!

@LA –

I don’t see those numbers. CNN Poll of Polls through Nov 1 has Obama 53% – 46%. Still close, but that puts Obama comfortably above the 51% that they said would assure him the election. With those higher numbers it makes it seem that more people have finally made their decision.

Yioes! I have CNN Int. on in the other room and I hear McCain shrieking with his Penguin’s quack quack voice, spewing those lies!

Well, I finished my gym, so that means that I have earned the right to sit on my butt in front of the computer with a cup of coffee and pie for the rest of the day!

I JUST sent off an e-mail to mom asking her if she has voted and/or made up her mind (I actually asked her if she has found the courage to vote the Democrats in). I then offered to buy her vote – offering to send her a nice gift of she voted Obama – I told her I would do anything for votes.

I made apple pie yesterday, my husband brought me pumpkin for a pumpkin pie, and I have 2 brown bananas that need to be turned into chocolate chip banana bread today. See what I have to do to get through this very stressful time? He will lose at least one of those.

Thanks to Sarah Palin, We Get to See the Cruelness of the GOP as It Really Is

“Back in the 1840s, there was a group called the Know Nothings. They were against immigrants and for real Americans. (“Real American” did not then, as it does not now, refer to Indians; it refers to descendants of English immigrants.) The movement was based on fear. Irish and German Catholics were going to take over. They would take orders from the Pope-in-Rome (one word). Their values were not “our values.” They drank. Their nunneries were virtual brothels and when the nuns had babies they practiced infanticide.”

Well, you can only do what you can with your Mum. I gave up on my Godmother; she voted McWeasel which was not a surprise. I did get her to concede that Obama’s program was very well done and he is a great public speaker. Plus she voted on Prop 2 here in Ca. You pick your battles I guess.

On a serious note, part of our discussion over lunch at Mudstock II was about healthcare and the devastation that a few Chicago-area mudflatters have experienced from disease and illness. I know many other Mudflat bloggers from around the country have shared their healthcare horror stories. It won’t happen overnight, but we are all so hopeful of what an Obama administration can bring to shedding light and helping solve the inequities in health insurance, medical care, and disease research. Here’s to better healthcare for all!

It was great to see the Chicago reps at Millenium Park. I was born on Chicago’s south side and lived in the city and suburbs for 50 years. I still think Chicago is #1, even tho I now live in CA. Was back there in 2004 and visited the park. Love the bean and the two face water features. I was sad when I heard the Berghoff closed; had many good lunches there. McCain and Palin said some nasty things about Chicago in past weeks and they made me MAD. They don’t know what a great city Chicago is. Good for you all!!

Oh Bec, I agree. Healthcare really needs to get some attention. I work in Healthcare and see the rising costs every day. Barack’s Healthcare plan is a much better plan than McGrumpys. I can only hope he can get the support to put it into place.

Bravo Mudstock II!!!! Count us in for the Mega Mudstock in Alaska….just say where and when. After spending Saturday at the Obama Little Havana office here in Miami, my Obamacan was blown away by the energy and excitement. The mix of volunteers was wonderful and the place was packed. We did calls, canvassed neighborhoods and then picked up dinner for the hungry troops back at HQ. He loved it! As effective as I have tried to be with Repubs and Undecideds, he has been really good with other Repubs who are surprised by his passion for Obama. You have to understand that he has voted Repub his entire life except for ’04 when he lost a bet over WMD in Iraq with me and voted for Kerry. We are small business owners who are in “that” income bracket, pay for health ins for our employees, and plan to grow our business substantially this year (thankfully). We truly believe that Obama is best for the nation and best for us. We even made sure all our employees had the time off to vote early. But more importantly, our “conservative” friends have been secretly telling my husband that they are leaning Obama too but not telling anyone. He has been talking to them as a financial conservative Repub who is solidly for Obama. Even his father who is always in for a good debate with me (so lopsided since I am a political junkie and usually am able to trump him on false historical data) said “well, I hope you are ready to support your mother and I WHEN Obama wins”. This is huge coming from him….it must pain him to acknowledge that McCain is losing. Or maybe, just maybe he is seeing the light and doesn’t want anyone to know? One can HOPE after all, right?

Barack’s “ground game” is not just about the election. It’s a revelation about how we–the people–can mobilize to work together to strengthen our communities. It’s a vision of citizen activism re-making democracy from the ground up.

I’ll be fascinated to see how the extraordinary networks the campaign has facilitated will be deployed once we can say those wonderful words, “President Barack Obama.” Thanks for sharing stories from Mudstock I and II. I look forward to hearing what else the Chi-town mudflatters get up to, and how all the rest of us proceed to take back our country.

Hi Mudpuppies!

Yes, MudstockII was wonderful! It was great meeting such wonderful, committed people.

Tomorrow night, we will be witnessing history. Especially those of us lucky to be here in Chicago. For those who do not have tickets, boyfriend tells me that in addition to Butler Field (near Petrillo bandshell), there will be five other locations along the lakefront that have speakers and Jumbotrons.

One of the confirmed locations is near the Lincoln statue at the south end of Grant Park. I will post the others as soon as he has them. If I understand correctly, all attendees (ticketed or not) need to be screened to get into any of these locations. Remember, no chairs or coolers. Also, bring an ID.

Many thanks to Bec and Gary for setting up Mudstock II.

Bec, you’ll get a kick out of this one….I used to babysit Billy Peterson’s daughter. I worked with his first wife Joanne back in the late 70s and Joanne would volunteer at Victory Gardens Theater when Billy was acting there. They had NO money so I helped out by babysitting Maite on nights they both were at the Theater. Who knew…..?
