Signs of the Times in Anchorage. Open Season on Idiocy.

1 11 2008

I had to run an unexpected errand in South Anchorage today. My travels took me to “the Hillside” to one of Anchorage’s more lucrative zip codes. This is the area with the big houses that overlook the Anchorage skyline and Cook Inlet, where you expect to find many traditional Republican voters, and oil industry executives. I decided I was going to keep a tally of yard signs and see what I ended up with. I was quite surprised. Here’s the breakdown, with Democrats on the left and Republicans on the right.

Obama 4 – McCain  0
Begich 18 – Stevens  0 (Senate race)
Berkowitz  8 – Young  0 (House race)
Kenny 17 – Hawker  15 (Local House race)

The latest numbers now show Mark Begich with a 20 point lead over convicted felon Ted Stevens in the Senate race. Ethan Berkowitz is 9 points up in the House race over Don Young. And from the looks of it, the local Democrat might even stand a chance in this Anchorage red zone. My faith is restored.

The bad news in the sign department is that an Obama-Biden sign that got stolen and replaced down the street from me, is gone again. But my own sign, is still sticking proudly in its snowbank.

And remember a while ago, when I found signs hung up over the highway that said, “Obama 4 Change 2 Islamic Law -N- USA”? Well, the perpetrator obviously has nothing but time on his hands, because they’ve started popping up all over town. In actuality this tortured soul with the spray paint, the stencils, and the disregard for the English language has provided a new sport for my spouse.

Today's Haul.

Today's haul.

Spouse has started a collection, and everytime a sign is seen, the brakes screech, the exacto knife comes out of the glove compartment, and the sign ends up in my trunk. I think that Spouse secretly likes this activity. In any case, we  added three new signs to the collection today, which brings the total up to 8.

This time there was a new development….the name of a website was written on one of the signs. Since it was written in small letters, it’s doubtful that our sign maker intended it to be seen by the passing traffic. It was meant…..for US, the sign taker-downers.

Something looked fishy about the website address…. http://www.obessionthemovie.com. Obession? I tried it. No movie. It was as I suspected. I tried obSessionthemovie.com. Paydirt! Obsession – Radical Islam’s War Against the West. The trailer has collapsing towers, crowds chanting “Death to America”, and Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and the rest of the Fox crowd saying that “every single American should see this movie.”

So keep an eye out Anchorage and Eagle River area residents! It’s open season on illegally displayed, badly written, factually incorrect political signs with spelling mistakes! And you don’t even need a hunting license!

I worked at the Obama headquarters today. Lots of people weren’t home but I left lots of cheery messages encouraging them to vote. I thought how different it was from the robocalls the McCain camp is putting out.

I have a copy of the movie. I live in Durham,NC and back in July or August received one free of charge thru the mail. Also, was told by folks who still get a daily newspaper that this film was distributed as in insert in the local paper one Sunday. Haven’t watched it, but did open it looking for info on the movie and the Clarion Fund a 50(c)(3). Didn’t find out much about them.

I think the best part of the post isn’t about the stupid signs, but the real ones showing Obama and Begich in the lead.

Even Teddy’s pals appeat to have abandoned him. Funny how 7 Federal felony charges makes one instantly an outsider.. even if he thinks he’s innocent.

AKM, isn’t OBSESSION the MOVIE the awful racist anti-Arab DVD that the Repugs have been saturating certain domestic markets with, fanning their smear/fear campaign? They put the DVD in newspapers, etc. I know I have been reading about this. I will try to find a link.

The “Obsession” DVD appeared in both the Post and News, Denver papers. This caused a huge ruckus, as some thought it was political propaganda, and were outraged that we subscribers had to receive it. Others felt it was “educational”- I felt it was worthy of recycling, right into my bin.

And of course there are are always wing nuts who make connections where there are none, as clearly illustrated by your sign makers.

Congrats, AKM spouse, for making a statement in favor of sanity.

I posted this at the very end of the last thread so I decided to share it again.

I went searching to see where Palin would be campaigning next – after the news was out. She was in Raleigh NC (I think it was) Anyway caught the end of her speech on cnn live. I just wanted to see how she looked – couldn’t tell much by her manner except that she looked tired and skinny also. also the stage wasn’t crowded like it usually is. Think it was Todd standing way over one edge and another dude on the other corner also. This was such a major gaffe that even someone as narcissistic as she have to realize it. I would want to crawl in a hole and come out in ten years -maybe. I can’t see how they can even talk about the election seriously tomorrow as this is just so dumb.

CNN is putting a low profile on palin phone call and more emphasis on Obama’s aunt on website.

AKM, what I hope Alaskans will realize, in case you and your heroic spouse somehow miss getting any of their remaining racist signs, is that this OBSESSION fear/smear tactic is part of McCain’s campaign. I think it peaked in September in markets in the lower 48. But maybe the campaign up there has been so overwhelmed covering up for Palin that they got behind on their OBSESSION distribution.

Deb is right. The wacko fundies (I mean, “Welcome the Rapture” types) are one of the financing groups behind OBSESSION: Christians United for Israel

Marty-it was a very good day. And this prank on SP cracked me up! Guy at the Obama office told us about the funniest canvassing he had heard of….the canvassers went up to a house that looked unkempt on the outside, when they rang the bell, they heard someone inside unlocking about 10 locks on the door…unshaven, unkempt man peers out through a crack. When the canvassers asked if he has voted…he says “no need to” when they inquire why…the man says the aliens will arrive on Jan 20th! Sharp canvasser quickly described how Obama’s plan would help deal with aliens!

“Although supposedly a 501 c(3) non-profit, this week the Clarion Fund’s website featured an article supporting John McCain. Yesterday, the Patriot-News in PA reported on the DVDs showing up in Pennsylvania, and noted:

‘On Wednesday, though, there was an article on the group’s new Web site, http://www.radicalislam.org, that backed Republican presidential candidate John McCain. The article discusses both candidates and concludes: “McCain’s policies seek to confront radical Islamic extremism and terrorism and roll it back while [Barack] Obama’s, although intending to do the same, could in fact make the situation facing the West even worse.'”

Acts 4:32-35
The Believers Share Their Possessions
32All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. 33With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. 34There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales 35and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.

He chased me and chased me and chased me, and that was my dream. Ummm, his appendage was well passed his knees and I was RUNNING.
Not only did he *do*me, he did the entire country and saw to the deaths of over 4,000 soldiers and countless Iraqis.

Whabs in honor of your sicko dream…:

Way back in my youth, i was traveling and landed in Tijuana.. A sign on a building.. lose 10 lbs in 1 hour.. 10 pesos..

I figured I could lose a few, so went in.. I said i wanted to lose 10 lbs.. here’s my 10 pesos.. The lady said go thru the door and wait.. So, i did, there was a huge pool and after a few minutes, a gorgeous senorita entered from a distant door and yelled to me.. Senor, if you catch me, you can have me.. !!!

So, off i went, running and sweatin, she jumped in the water and im swimming and paddling.. Out of the pool, she makes me run and run more and finally, i catch her.. Incredible mind blowing sex.. She said get on the scale.. and WOW.. I lost 10lbs..!!

The next day, i thought i’d do that again.. seemed logical..! So, i went back and walked in.. The lady said if i want to go again, i could lose 10lbs but this time it would cost 100 pesos.. I thought hmmm.. but finally agreed as i thought about the night before..

I walked in and waited..Finally after a few minutes, the door opened and in walked this huggggge gringo… .. I stared and wondered.. Finally, he yells, Senor, if I catch you, i can have you.. !!!🙂

Btw, I’ve been trying to keep from drooling ever since you posted about your halloween candy. Reese’s peanutbutter cups are my favorites. I did my first-of-the-month shopping today and resisted the chocolate draw valiantly, not knowing that I’d be in desperate need of some upon returning home.

So true. Another that shared. The Native Americans didn’t just help their own family all of them where a family, they fished for all , hunted for all, weaved for all, they took care of all that where in their village. They showed the white man how to farm and hunt they distributed their generosity. If only we could go back to those times where everyone cared and helped others with no questions, no return of favor, just love from the heart.

Newsflash!

Cindy McCain has told her husband Republican presidential candidate John mccain that if the GOP loses the presidency any additional taxes she has to pay under President Obama’s new tax plan will come out of john mccain’s allowance.

Cindy McCain’s income was more than $6 million in 2006. She paid more than $1.7 million in federal income taxes — a tax rate of more than 28 percent. For 2007, Cindy McCain reported $4.2 million in income , nearly $2 million less than she reported the previous year, and paid $1.1 million in taxes, a tax rate of about 26 percent.

Cindy McCain has confided in close friends that although she is campaigning for her husband she will not be disappointed if Barack Obama wins. The beer distributorship heiress says that the reason her income has dropped nearly $2 million dollars in the last year is because joe the plumber is down from a case a week to a six pack a week. And, if Obama wins and ends the idiotic economic policies of the Bush-Cheney-McCain triumvirate joe the plumber will be able to afford that case of beer a week and she will make another $2 million or more next year. She is keeping this all confidential because she is still planning to dock her husband’s allowance to make up for the extra taxes she has to pay under Obama regardless of whether her income grows by another $2 million dollars next year.

This morning on my favourite “this week in politics” roundup, the focus was on the US election. An American political historian by the name of Allan Lichtman was interviewed.

This is from his wikipedia entry:
“He is best known for the “Keys” system, presented in his books The Thirteen Keys to the Presidency and The Keys to the White House. The system uses thirteen historical factors to predict whether or not the popular vote in the election for President of the United States will be won by the candidate of the party holding the presidency (regardless of whether the President is the candidate). The keys were selected based on their correlations with the presidential election results from 1860 through 1980, using statistical methods adapted from the work of geophysicist Vladimir Keilis-Borok for predicting earthquakes. The system then correctly predicted the popular vote winner in each of the elections of 1984 through 2004.”

He said that there are thirteen indicators he looks at, and if six of them are present – bingo! a change of government occurs.

In this election, the number of indicators for a change of government is ….. nine.

Sleep well, Mudpuppies.

After the laughs on the last post, it’s good to get serious again, although I’d rather go to bed laughing for a change. It’s great news to hear that Begich is ahead. Regardless of his latest bob and weave on Palin, at least his capture of this important Senate seat would be a real triumph politically. I can’t speak for how well he will serve Alaskans (only time will tell), but at least he’s not a convicted felon.

I’m so grateful for all the insight I have gotten from reading your posts, AKM, as well as the thoughtful and informed comments. I realize how little I knew or thought about Alaska and it wonderful people. Before coming here, I guess there was a certain bias or stereotype that colored my thinking. Although Alaska seemed like a place I’d love to visit, I’m not sure I ever wanted to live there (for a number of reasons).

And, although I’ve learned a lot, I feel that some things about Alaska are still not clear in my mind. For starters, there seems to be some significance in the phrase “the lower 48” that escapes me. I’ll be the first to admit that the U.S. government bears responsibility for a lot that is wrong in this country, but aren’t we all part of the same country? And, it does seem that non-Alaskans…those of us who live in the lower 48…are referred to in a pejorative sense. I’d appreciate any insight into this to add to my understanding. Thanks.

In Alaskan parlance “lower 48” refers to the contiguous states, all 48 of them. Alaska & Hawaii are sorta out on our own…

In regard to whether or not that’s used as a denigrating term, well, I think that depends on the person speaking.

Lower 48 from myself or like-minded Alaskans is just a generalization of the remainder of the states.

Some idiots in Alaska like to consider themselves apart, and so use it fairly disparagingly, but I ignore those types & thankfully have very little interaction with them.

So, if I, or other Alaskans here, use the term I would say that it is NOT meant in a bad way. I.e., if I say that the lower 48 is as entitled to the PFD money as Alaskans are (which I do believe), I just mean everyone else in the U.S. (including Hawaii, but we are too lazy to say lower 48 +1, or lower + Hawaii).

I concur. I’m thinking it’s probably comparable to Hawaiians calling the rest of the U.S. “the mainland”. I’ve actually also heard people say they were going “to the states”, which I always think is odd. AKM

This may sound contrarian, but I think we should not take down signs of others we disagree with, no matter how stupid they are. You know, first amendment and all that jazz. If my Republican next door neighbor was to take down signs he disagreed with, I would be missing my Obama sign. Thankfully that has not happened. Even if my sign does eventually disappear, I wil not retaliate against The McCain signs of the neighborhood. Under the same logic, I do not believe in torturing prisoners, even if the other side tortures ours.

…I am Eyes Wide Open and I approve of this message.

These were not yard signs, nor were they on private property. They were illegally displayed in public areas. AKM

1 11 2008
Eyes Wide Open in Pittsburgh

AKM: I had not considered the issue of posting in illegal locations. I had not thought about that.

In PA, it is common in each election for candidates to post signs along the highway at every intersection. I once ran in a local election as an unknown against an endorsed candidate. We both posted signs along the road. Often our signs were side by side. It used to drive me crazy that my signs were constantly stolen. I even spotted one that had been pitched into a stream. On principal I never retaliated. Oh, I did lose the election.

Yes, here, political signs must be on private property with the permission of the owner. That’s why we remove these. I would never take down a legal sign, even if I disagreed with it. I’ve also seen official campaign yard signs displayed illegally, but I’ve never taken them. But I consider the ones above to be fair game! 🙂 AKM

Fear of a Palin Presidency Drives US Expats to Vote for Obama

“The economy, taxes and America’s image are hot-button issues for US expats in Germany. But even Republicans are now going Democrat for a far more compelling reason: Fear that Sarah Palin could become president.

Jim Sides, 55, a Californian living in Bonn, is a swing voter who cast his ballot for President George W. Bush in 2004. This time the one single factor driving him to the Democratic ticket is the possibility that the Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin is a heartbeat away from the American presidency.”

Oh yes, we have Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time, though just about every Legislative Session someone introduces a bill to have us drop Daylight Savings; never gets anywhere though. We actually used to have four time zones in AK, till 1983 when we went to just two. Most of the State is on Alaskan Time and the far reaches of the Aleutian Islands are on Hawai’i-Aleutian time, except during the summer when I suppose it’s just Aleutian Daylight Time, since Hawai’i stays on Standard Time all year…

In Japan, McPalin will get more of the military base + dependents vote, but the civilian expat community is heavily in favor of Obama. English teachers in Tokyo alone outnumber all the base inhabitants throughout Japan by 3 to 1 so the expat vote here should be a plus for Obama. I imagine a similar scenario for most NATO nations.

Miami Herald endorses Obama for president

“When he began his campaign in February of 2007, Sen. Obama was viewed as an upstart. He built his candidacy one victory at a time, aided by an excellent campaign staff and fueled by an impressive ability to raise funds on the Internet. He displayed inspiring eloquence and a sure grasp of detail on issues. Voters of all races and ages were drawn to his promise to discard the culture wars and seek pragmatic solutions for problems instead of relying on ideology and worn-out slogans.”

Ever the contrarian curmudgeon, I have to ask if there is not an inconsistency in us becoming a posse of ‘howling liberals’🙂 … out to lynch anything we see as contrarian to OUR perceived values?
I ask this in relation to the furor over ‘OBSESSION’. The response here all too much resembles a famous ‘book burning’ here in Berlin. By people who never had, and never would read what the so fervently condemned.
IM[not so]HO I believe all who would condemn for example MEIN KAMPF, or some of Henry Ford’s DEARBORN FREE PRESS ravings, would be better served to have at least read it… and then they could be RATIONALLY outraged, not just a part of their own ‘howling mob’.
There are clear reasons to examine the relationship of Islam to the Post-Enlightenment values of the West. The best source for me, after seeing close-up and personal here in ‘EUrabia’ how such things work out in reality, as opposed to our cherished liberal beliefs, is to have read Harvard professor Samuel P. Huntington’s pre ‘9-11’ book: “Clash of Cultures”.
O.K. that said, as stated in preamble, as ‘contrarian curmudgeon’… just want you all to THINK before going off on a knee-jerk response.

I really want the good guys (and gals😉 ) to win Tuesday–to change the tone of America from the low-road Bush/Cheney/McCain/Palin to the high beautiful road of Obama/Biden (Michelle/Jill). There is such a difference between between dem and repub candidates and spouses for ’08: obvious affection between Barack and Michelle and their family, and Joe and Jill and their family. I guess I’m a softy for genuine love. I think Obama and Biden extend that feeling of warm affection to the rest of us. There is a lot of work ahead of us, but good leadership will make the difference. OBAMA/BIDEN 2008!

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/11/01/biden-never-thought-id-see-this-from-mccain/

“Biden: Never thought I’d see this from McCain”
The morning after Joe Biden told reporters he hoped John McCain would finish the campaign with a positive tone — “his strength” — the Delaware senator said he doesn’t remember a presidential campaign ending so viciously.

“In my view, over the last few weeks, John McCain’s campaign has gone way over the top,” said Biden Saturday at an outdoor rally on Evansville’s Main Street. “They are trying to take the low road to the highest office in the land. It’s not only George Bush’s economic policies that John McCain has bought hook, line and sinker. He’s also bought Karl Rove’s brand of political tactics.”

“It is disappointing, I never thought I’d see this from a McCain campaign,” Biden continued. “They’re calling Barack Obama every name in the book. They are going out in a way that I don’t recall it being more personally vicious.”

As a supporter yelled, “They’re scared!” the Delaware senator predicted that the tone would get worse in the last three days.
Stopping in Indiana for a morning rally in the middle of a two-day bus tour through Ohio, Biden said he and his wife Jill rose early Saturday. Mrs. Biden went running along the Ohio river while the senator was “walking and running.”

“I tell you, it’s getting harder to keep up with her,” he told the crowd.

On her run, Mrs. Biden met a nun who was running and going to mass early so she could make it to the vice presidential nominee’s rally. Returning to the hotel, Mrs. Biden reminded her husband, a devout Catholic, that he hadn’t yet gone to All-Saints Day mass.

“Sister Jean-Michelle, I made 9:00. I made 9:00 mass. I just want to thank you,” said Biden, scanning the crowd for the nun. “I’ll call my mom some time during the day and the first thing she’ll ask me, ‘Joey did you go to mass?’ So you saved me, sister. You saved me.”

Mrs. Biden introduced her husband, taking off her coat at the podium to reveal an elegant, bright red dress that got a roar of approval from the audience.

“I didn’t think it would cause that much of a stir,” she responded.

Just a bit of clarification on the terms “Lower 48,” “Outside,” and “going to the states.” These are carryovers from our territorial days before AK and HI gained statehood. They trace back to the days when most traveled to and from by steamship mostly via Seattle, before roads and planes connected us. They have no negative connotation.

Just as many of us still refer to the Alaska Highway (our sole road link to the Lower 48) as “the Alcan” which was a military road punched through Canada during WWII. When I submitted an obit for my dad several years ago, ADN (under McClatchey) automatically corrected it, much to my annoyance, because he had endured the Alcan twice in the late 1940s when no one considered it a highway.

Historically we’ve dealt with Outside businesses that even ten years ago didn’t recognize us as part of the US or on the same continent. Most now know the difference between continental and contiguous, that we are not a foreign country or floating off Mexico as maps often show, and that a first-class stamp will send a letter even to us. It’s been a pet peeve of mine over the years trying to educate the ignorant. So the use of some of our arcane terms have perhaps persisted partly by this hapless discrimination. Anyway, hope that helps!

It’s not disparaging when we call it the Lower 48 or Outside (note the capital O — that’s how we write it). I tend to call them “the small states,” well, because they are. If Alaska was divided into two states, Texas would become the third largest state. We take great delight in teasing Texans with that tidbit.

My SO refers to the Lower 48 as “the old country.” He was born up here, but both of his folks were born Outside. When someone gives up on Alaska and moves “back home,” he always says, “they went back to the old country.”

Some crazies actually crossed on ice with overflow, sometime carried downstream, climbing up the other side and opening the doors to let the flood of water out. I have some 8mm film of it that I’d like to transfer to DVD but I’m afraid to even take it out of the can. Any recommendations out there for saving antique film?

Megacephalus, this blog entry above has nothing to do with OBSESSION. It references another movie completely — a documentary about voting and the Arab-American diaspora in Detroit. Relevancy? Of course we all think Muslim-Americans & Arab-Americans should vote. I happen to feel they should not be the subject of a horrible racist smear in this country, which is the whole point of a GOP-linked group issuing the David Horowitz-supported DVD OBSESSION every election cycle in the 21st century. I realize you are writing from overseas and may not have been tracking the impact of the GOP’s targeting of specific U.S. cities with this DVD during our elections.

I too saw one of these sign on an walkway over a very busy street. It reminded me of racist fliers that were posted around the town where I lived in Bulgaria against Roma (gypsy) people. At first I passed by, but the more I thought about it, the angrier I felt. By letting these things stand you are implicitly saying that they, and the opinions they express, are ok. They are not.

Fortunately, being a good Alaskan, I had a nice sharp knife in the truck and was able to cut the sign down. It took a good 30 minutes to bring it through the chain-link fence (it was on some heavy nylon fabric that wouldn’t bend) so that it didn’t fall on the cars below.

In response to an earlier poster who questioned taking down these offensive “Obama” signs but getting mad at people taking yard signs — there is a difference in removing signs on PUBLIC property (such as an overpass) and going onto someone else’s PRIVATE property to remove their sign.

The Obsession movie mentioned on the signs takes significant liberties with history and statements made by Muslims. If one knew anything about Islam, one would reject this movie outright for communicating misleading statements and misinterpreting historical events.

Like every group, organization, or religion, there are elements in Islam who are each more liberal, more moderate, more conservative, and more extreme. Therefore the arguments and actions taken against Islam based on the actions of their extremists only slowly turn the rest of the pool against you. The best method of neutralizing the threat is embracing the people, winning their hearts and minds, treating them with respect, and not accusing them wholesale of crimes. Surely, for when one examines history, one will find it has been the West who has committed the most crimes.

The Obsession DVD was distributed in major newspapers (including to their shame, the New York Times) during the past month at a cost of $3 million. It was originally made in 2006, its producers hoping to get it shown on the major networks. They refused because of the incendiary nature of the film, the gist of which is that all Muslims are possible terrorists. We can’t trust any of them. It’s virulent form of Islamophobia with hints of a new form of anti-semitism directed this time against Muslims in general, Arabs more specifically. One of the spokespersons in the film is a self-proclaimed “former Palestinian terrorist” whom the Jerusalem Post exposed as a fraud (Walid Shoebat). He is known for his extremist pro-Israel, anti Muslim views. Others include the excretable Robert Spencer.

The organization that funded this DVD uses a PO box so they can’t be traced. Jewsonfirst.org, however, has discovered the major backer to be an extremist Jewish organization which means that it is a piece of militant pro-Isareli propaganda, noting here that the person who has been most committed to exposing it for the dangerous propaganda it is, is Rabbi Haim Beliak, the Los Angeles-based rabbi who runs the jewsonfirst.org website.

The worst thing is that major newspapers allowed this garbage to go out with their papers. The New York Times has a lot to answer for.

That is so priceless AKM! Your other half deserves a big hug and a standing Ovation! Thank you for getting rid of those ugly nasty signs.

We got 2 of those Obsession DVDs mail to my house (in VA) and enough people got them that a local news/chat blog picked up the story. I snapped mine in 2 pieces before tossing them in the trash.

As for the person above (I skimmed comments), there are web-based companies that you can mail your 8mm film to. I’m in that industry as a side job, but only digitize old slides, not film.

AKM,

Found another said ‘epitome of ignorance’ sign on the corner of 9th and I street while driving into work this morning. Made me momentarily sick. Then seconds later I saw an “End Racism’ bumper sticker on a truck driving next to me that made me feel better.
