There is some interesting news regarding Troopergate fallout coming momentarily on KUDO! CC’s show starts in just a few minutes.
You can stream it live HERE.
Highlights:
*Sarah Palin claims that her first amendment rights are threatened because the media is criticizing what she is saying on the campaign trail. Interesting claim that the freedom of the press to ask questions of politicians infringes the first amendment rights of the politicians… (head is spinning)
*Ted Stevens claimed last night during the Senatorial debate that he “hadn’t been convicted of anything.” Attorney Meg Simonian explains that under sentencing guidelines, Stevens’ continued denial of responsibility for his actions could serve to increase his sentence.
*Juror #4, the one who left the Ted Stevens trial to attend her father’s funeral, is summoned back to D.C. to explain her actions. She was not able to be contacted at the appointed time to discuss if she would be able to return to the trial last Monday.
*Palin has waived her confidentiality in the Personnel Board investigation, to allow public scrutiny. However, the other members of her staff who are being investigated have not. Therefore nothing is being released to the public. There are no guidelines in existence to determine what happens when a group is being investigated, and only one member has waived this right.
The question is, WHY has her staff refused to waive confidentiality. Palin, up until the point she was tapped to be the VP nominee told her staff to cooperate with any and all investigations. We’ve been given no explanation as to why the staff isn’t waiving this right.
It’s possible that this is, of course, a big PR move so Palin can appear to want open, honest process while knowing all the while she wouldn’t be accountable because of her uncooperative staff.
BREAKING NEWS – PRESS RELEASE CALLS FOR APOLOGY FROM THE McCAIN CAMPAIGN
BIPARTISAN CALL ON McCAIN CAMPAIGN FOR APOLOGY
TO FORMER ALASKA PUBLIC SAFETY COMMISSIONER
Campaign Attacks Career Law Enforcement Office Called “Unconscionable”
ANCHORAGE – Today a bipartisan call was made on the McCain Campaign for an apology to former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan. The bi-partisan call was made by former Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives Gail Phillips and former Senate President Chancy Croft. Both legislators expressed dismay at the negative characterizations made by McCain’s campaign staff that traveled to Alaska in September and October in an unsuccessful attempt to derail the Legislature’s bi-partisan “Troopergate” investigation. That investigation resulted in a report that was released, on a unanimous vote of the Alaska Legislature’s Legislative Council, on October 10, 2008.
Mr. Monegan, as conceded by Governor Palin in hiring him for the position, earned great respect throughout Alaska for his dedicated law enforcement work.
Former Speaker Phillips offered the following statement about Mr. Monegan, a former U.S. Marine, widely-respected career police officer, Anchorage Police Chief and State Public Safety Commissioner” “It’s unconscionable that an outside campaign organization which had no knowledge of the history, background or understanding of an Alaskan issue would come to our State to destroy the reputation and life of a dedicated Alaskan public servant, Walt Monegan. Senator McCain’s attempt to insert his campaign into action taken by the Alaska Legislature was wrong and poorly thought out.”
Former President Croft noted “Walt’s good reputation has become a casualty because of people who never met him, don’t live in Alaska and who valued political attack over honor. Gail and I are speaking for thousands of Alaskans of all political loyalties and we would like to help Walt get back his earned reputation for honesty and dedicated public service.”
First?
OK now that I got that out of my system…I promise I will never do that again.
We need to take turns. Just wondered what it like.
Night all.

What’s up? They just gave out a teaser.
If you can’t get it to stream, try opening in a new window. That helps sometimes.

@Brit Abroad :
Sweden? Cool! I think I knew that though. But yeah we are both pretty much feeding off CNN International (and skynews)
This is getting juicy!
Man, how come nothing is sticking to the teflon queen?
somebody please liveblog it!
AKM, you have eyes and ears everywhere. With much appreciation!
I can’t listen at work, dammit! Who is asking for an apology?
COMMANDO “That One” Hussein COALFIRE PALIN wants to know!
@nswfm CA (15:09:07) :
You owe me a keyboard!!!
radio show host(ess) has run out of adjectives for Palin, she now has a scream machine to articulate her wrath – this is good. Says Palin is “desperate” and “scraping bottom of barrel!”
says of Palin: “BE VERY AFRAID!” Where in Alaska is this radio station? Mudpuppies know?

Oh, I don’t know. 20 points down in Alaska. Just under 2/3 of the entire USA thinks she’s not ready for the Presidency. Seems like something is sticking.

What’s the gist? I can’t get it to stream.
Before going to a break, said a lawyer named Meg would be interviewed.
@ Jamie
Oh good, glad you saw that… everyone disappeared off the last thread as I was writing.
Could someone tell me what’s happening, please??? Last time I tried live streaming KUDO my computer crashed…
Ohh! The stream works for me–thanks!
Just getting started after the commercial
@nswfm CA (15:15:52) :
ADM Alaska Politics blog has a letter from Gail Phillips (former R Speaker of the Alaska State House) and Chancy Croft (former D Alaska State Senate President) asking McCain for an apology over how the campaign treated Walt Monegan and Alaskans (http://community.adn.com/adn/node/133737)
@Lori W. (15:17:56) :
It’s in Anchorage.
…”valued political attack over honor.” WELL NOOOOOO KIDDING!
This can more than certainly be applied to the ENTIRE McCain/Palin campaign!
I hope those who can stream will keep the rest of us posted.
Haloween music with Stevie Wonder. Welcoming Meg (Maloney??) First amendment rights being attacked by reporters–says Palin ?!?
She is talking to Meg the attorney about the 1st ammendment right and Palin’s problem with reporters using it!
Oh sorry, putting in parentheses made the link not work. Hopefully this will:

They are talking about Ted Stevens now.
Ted Stevens comments in last night’s debate with Dem candidate. Ted in “intense denial” over being convicted.
Now talking about last night’s debate and Stevens saying he hasn’t been found guilty of anything.
Pat Buchanan, conservative poop, on MSNBC just said about Sarah Palin “She takes a beating and comes out with a smile.” WTF..?? That’s sounds like a battered woman.
MSNBC has Pat Buchanan and Michelle Maulkin (?) singing the “it factor” Palin has.
HOPE I DON’T CATCH IT.
Thanks Denise — had to take break for trick-or-treaters!
Bec Hussein, thanks for listening in Illinois and keeping us rural Alaskans posted with such succinct and insightful posts.
McCain down to 30% in poll of ability to pick qualified people. Oh SARAH, sounds like you are hurting your partner and your own chances.
And the rest of you listening and commenting, also. Thanks a bunch. This is a fun way to listen–through your ears and … what’s the word for it…snarks?
@Mudflats OFF TOPIC, sort of It is evident that some Reps. think Sarah Palin should run for Pres. in 2012. Personally, I would never like to see her on the ticket again. I know that she is in deep doodoo up there in AK, but Reps. just lie and lie, and people keep electing them even though they have been found guilty (like Stevens). I know there is a rumor that something hideous will be revealed about her family life after Nov. 4, but that is just a rumor. If it is true and ugly enough, her political career will be finished. But if this doesn’t happen, she must be kept constantly in “hot water” in AK so that the Rep. party won’t consider her ever again. Thank you for keeping us all informed of developments there; it helps us to know what to do to stop this awful woman.
Asking Meg about anything upcoming from this.
Yay for bipartisan Alaskans who dare to speak out… and now it’s goodnight from Europe. Can’t wait to see what’s happened overnight (I always feel like I go to bed and miss the good stuff).
After sentencing he’ll have a report date and could very well be detained. Would have to step down. After sentencing – he sure can’t still claim he hasn’t been convicted.
We may duplicate each other’s postings, but at least ya’ll will get something from those of us who can listen live. Not a bad thing to get verbal streaming verified by more than one Mudpuppy.
Lose right to vote after sentencing. Can’t start appeal until he as been sentenced
Night, Brit.
Short time after sentencing to file points on appeal, and then it could take 18 months. She thinks he’ll have to serve while on appeal.
Almost always, convicted felons serve their sentence while appealing.
Uh oh, TED, pack your bags and toothbrush. Break.
I think she said she didn’t see anything to help his appeal. Am I right, Denis?
On commercial and news break.
@Bec Hussein in Illinois (15:32:00) :

Gov’s self inflicted ethics complaints.
2 issues in letters Meg wrote:
Wrong a) Indy council to conduct investigation and it would be confidential BUT Palin waived hers and that means no longer confidential
Timeout – trick-or-treaters. Loved CC’s comment — Ted Stevens is convicted and conflicted!
R Sen. Elizabeth Dole getting slammed in the press about a recent ad against her opponent D-Kay Hagen accusing her of associating with the “godless”.
“It has been roundly condemned by editorial boards in the state and even Carter Wrenn, a legendary political consultant with long ties to the late North Carolina Republican Sen. Jesse Helms, wrote on his blog: “My guess is the next sound you may hear will be the roof falling in on Liddy Dole.””

@Bec
Ah, he is that…
Wrong b) Palin disclosure form not signed and therefore doesn’t satisfy the law
Saying bc other members of staff not waived, then must pursue with confidentiality.
Meg pointing out how 2x Palin openly criticized secrecy of Personnel Board.
…”Gail and I are speaking for thousands of Alaskans of all political loyalties and we would like to help Walt get back his earned reputation for honesty and dedicated public service.”
AKM…can we mudpuppies add our 2 cents as (non-Alaskans) to help this effort? How can we add our support for Walt on this? Any suggestions.
I think we’ve become ‘honorary Alaskans’ thanks to you!
InJuneau – you got me all wrong – completely store bought frozen pie. I told you – it skipped a generation.
It’s about time they demanded an apology. I was so pi$$ed off when they took the campaign up there just to try and stop the investigation, these are things people need to know BEFORE they elect that BimboBush into office. Thanks for letting us be the first to know AKM.
Meg’s cell phone breaking up.
Personnel Board head says staff refused to waive confidentiality. Meg trying to get them to agree to make public the recommendation by seperating it from the other employees.
Meg – public should not be at the mercy of the Personnel Board.
Palin has openly criticized the Personnel Board in the past for operating in secrecy!!! Then she picks them to “investigate” her and her employees.
Employees refused to waive confidentiality….Petumenos can make his statements public, as long as he doesn’t “out” the ones who want confidentiality. As you know, Palin waived confidentiality.
However, there is some question as to whether she signed anything that can charge her for perjury.
Meg says public should not be dependant on the PB to decide. Palin continues to say in public she wants report to be released, but getting it both ways when Palin senior staff doesn’t want report public.
Problem is law allows utter secrecy. Yikes.
Bigger question for Palin – why is it that her staff is refusing to open this investigation up to the public. What do they have to hide? (Meg)
Meg says bigger ? is why the senior staff saying they want report kept private. What is being hidden and why?
Thanks to Bec and others for live blogging!
OT:
pumpkin all ready to go — Obama’s logo. New and improved yardsign disguised for the evening as a ghost. Pumpkin will be indoors to protect it…. not dusk yet here in CA. Need to go order pizza for dinner….
At very least – she should tell the staff, that she appointed, who is keeping this secret.
Palin’s deposition was done under oath.
Sorry — Palin should tell the public that it is HER staff, that SHE appointed, who is keeping this secret. Public needs to know.
Personnel Board is protecting SP’s first amendment rights?
Meg thinks Palin is trying to have it both ways. Meg is being ignored by Palin’s lawyer. Palin has not made request for PB to honor her desire for report to be public.
She had originally ordered her staff to cooperate fully and without secrecy….now they don’t want anything they say to be released…it’s being called “loyalty”.
the flawed disclosure form is an issue. There is a question about being under “oath”… but if she lies, she has a loophole because she didn’t sign it.
Commercial coming up — next question to Meg – what do we do next.
Eating frozen, pizza, blogging, and answer the door. Yikes.
Irishgirl – did you get the livestreaming – there is a lucky Irish commercial on right now! It is actually a political commercial. LOL

@Bec Hussein in Illinois (15:44:02):
Oh, that’s right, I’d forgotten about it skipping a generation. But at least it IS out before this year’s T-day…
Palin’s first amendment rights: to say and do whatever and not be criticized for it!!
Alaskans are waiting for a call to action. Meg says focus on making sure results of PB investigation be made public. Will need a law suit after report done if Palin does not open report to public.
we may never know if Palin’s case will be dismissed, the ethics violation one.
I just want you honorary Alaskans to kindly remember that we’re not all idiots up here, unlike what we’ve, unintendedly, unleased on the rest of you. I am SO embarrassed to be an Alaskan some days…
Northern – hasn’t that always seemed to be Palin’s way?
If report shows cause to suspect probable cause–then judge announced.
Probable cause with corrective action taken or Case dismissed, then public won’t even know!!!!
Meg says public should call on PB to make her part of report and recommendations and actions public.
public is being called on to request her testimony to be released to the public… Let’s get those letters going, Mudders!!!
Meg’s recommendations to the public:
Call on personnel board to honor Gov’s waiver of confidentiality and make results and action by her public.
Huh Denise?
Palin should read the First Amendment. NavyBlueWife has some advice for her here: http://www.motleymoose.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=586
@injuneau….good heavens friend….Alaska isnt the only place that has lousy politicians. We all have our fair share….palin just happens to be playing on a bigger stage than some.
OK Alaskans – go for it. Call Palin on this. Get the truth.
Meg Sumonian — website – I’ll pull it up
Hey, why don’t those people on the radio talk like they are from Minnesota? Aren’t they Alaskans?
What I think would be great is if Walt Monegan runs against Sarah Palin if she runs for Governor again. Or if she goes for Senator, he should run against her. I think he should run against her in any primary she runs in, after all, he is also a Republican, isn’t he?
California, your governor is campaigning with McCain and accusing Obama of being “skinny”. Hahahahahaha!

Any wagers on the Election?
I say Obama will receive 301 Electorials. (Did I say that correctly)?
Whoever hits the correct number, everyone will have to pitch in and send them to DC on 1/20 for Inauguration!
InJuneau, my governor went to jail for taking “free” favors ie: house renovations, trips, cigars…. I can’t wait to see SWWNBN get charged in the same way. They will get her…. They will.

No, but you can blame Palin for Wasilla.
I predict the race is too tight for predictions and we need to focus on getting out the vote. The turnout is going to be huge on both sides.
What a wonderful public service Mudflats provided through the link to the live radio show discussing the Ted Stevens case AND the Sarah Palin Troopergate case. Those of us in New England and across the Lower 48 have by far fewer opportunities to hear such a succinct explanation of the applicable arguments in both topics.
I plan to Google Meg Simonian/Van Fleim as suggested (by the radio host) for even more information.
Great work as usual Mudflats. Keep it up.
Ripley – this just got one step closer yesterday for something like this happening in Illinois — again. We have a governor problem here, too. Repeatedly!

That’s where I lived before I moved to Corvallis Oregon. My daughter still lives in Santa Rosa. I don’t miss it much. Corvallis is like Santa Rosa was 25 years ago! Plus, we get to vote by mail and I really like that!
As a matter of fact I’m hoping that Obama pushes for nationwide vote by mail. That will cure all the problems we are having with voter disenfranchisement and flipped votes. Imagine, voting in your kitchen up to two weeks before the election and then dropping your ballot off at the library. No lines, no muss, no fuss!
InJuneau aka Wrangler Tractor That One Hussein (15:55:40) :

You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down.
Anyone else ever gotten this error from WordPress?
@Laurie (15:58:10) :
Thank you, and I know we’re not the only ones with whacko pols. It just seems that way sometimes with all the “actually” convicted pols who are already serving time, Sen. Stevens, Palin, and who knows who else. Plus, there are all those other things that have made AK a national laughingstock over the past few years (Bong Hits for Jesus case all the way to the SCOTUS…).

I predict the race is too tight for predictions and we need to focus on getting out the vote. The turnout is going to be huge on both sides.

Are you serious? Do you see harm in predicting the outcome? We are all getting out the vote.
“Bec– hasn’t that always seemed to be Palin’s way?”
Yeah, but this is the first time she codified it in the constitution.
Tally of early voting in Alaska is already higher than it was 4 years ago!

I didn’t vote for Arnie. Have battled his plans many times. He is married to a Kennedy and you have got to know his house is fun sometimes. Arnie was in a deadlock with the Dem state legislature until Arnie went with more progressive ideas. Others were stalemated.
MIssouri once elected a dead guy.
@Ripley AKA Copper Hussein Catfish in CT (16:04:54) :
Hey, the way I figure it, you’re ALL honorary Alaskans by now. Now, if we could just figure out a way to get you all registered to vote here to help in the next election, that would be fabulous!
Here it comes… the headline story. Chancy Croft is on
Northern Exposure (16:02:04) :
I predict the race is too tight for predictions and we need to focus on getting out the vote. The turnout is going to be huge on both sides.
I agree with your focus on getting out the vote, but I don’t think it is tight. The last poll showed Obama ahead by 10 in popular vote and all the sites following the EV show him winning easily. I actually think it’s going to be a landslide. I think a lot of Republicans are going to sit it out. The only Republicans I know who aren’t going to vote for Obama are not voting. They can never vote for a Democrat (I really don’t get that) but they also can’t bring themselves to vote for McCain/Palin so they are sitting it out. I think the reason why some polls show it tightening is because they only poll people who say they are definitely going to vote. Therefore they are under counting registered voters who have chosen not to vote at all.
I could be wrong, but that’s the way I see it.
Ok Muddpuppies time to do some work.
Go to CNN and tell them what you think about this:
Today, CNN announced that it will be hosting a one-hour special this weekend called “Election Countdown: View from the Right,” featuring prominent right-wing pundits. However, it doesn’t appear that there will be a corresponding special featuring progressive voices.

Axelrod had it a bit wrong – they are in Hammond, IN tonight – not Gary! Campaign fatigue! The rally was all over the news, people started camping out there at 6 AM this morning to get in. Obama will be speaking about 8:30 PM central time. Had to carve out a little time for his daughters tonight.

Translation: Not Monegan’s fault.
Sorry, Denise. Wasn’t laughing at California. At you’re a blue state (I hope). For Swartzenegger, calling Obama “skinny” is like Palin accusing him of “pallin’ around with those terrorists”. It just strikes my funny bone.
Maria should rebuke him harshly for this!

How did that happen?
My honey just cast his vote for Obama! Yeah!!!!! He was the last slacker in the family!
My mind is swirling as I try to understand Palin saying her first amendment rights were violated because she is criticized for what she says! What in the world is she sniffing?
InJuneau – how about that school district in Defiance, Ohio bussing all their kids to a McCain rally yesterday? Yeah – for a “civic lesson.” I thought it was really bad judgement. But McCain needed the 4,000 kiddies to fill up the place.
More Light Than Heat (15:52:20) :
Just googled “the Antelope Valley, specifically Palmdale” and looks like you are near LA. Yep, you’re not as blue as NoCA. Although there are plenty of Repubs here and some communities that tend Repub, too.

I think, perhaps, and except for the past two months, she’s been breathing in a bit too much of that Wasilla air (it IS the meth capital of AK…).
I’m in LA Co — so SoCal. If you look at a map that shows terrain, there’s a tipped over triangle shape just north of the LA basin (inland). We’re sort of in the middle of that. Edwards AFB is close. The valley’s formed by 2 faults — the San Andreas and the Tehachipi faults. It’s an area called the High Desert.

I think there are Almond Joys in there, not that I could send them along the “‘tubes” quickly enough for you to give them out, or eat them…

I don’t think you need to be embarassed. We have corruption in our state too. Most states do. But what many states don’t have is people who stand up for what is right over partisan concerns. Even one of the guys who was part of the lawsuit to stop release of the report voted to release the findings. A republican crossed party lines to allow the subpoenas to go forward. Many Alaskans on BOTH sides of the aisle has shown they will do what is right rather than expedient.
And besides – we know you aren’t ALL idiots – there’s AKM !!!!
(and several of his blogger buddies) and the women around the kitchen table that organized the anti-Palin rally that outpeformed the RNC orchestrated Palin rally, and the volunteers who organized the Obama rallys that outperformed the Palin rally, and lots of evidence of very good, wise people in Alaska and all those people from Alaska writing postcards for swing states, and…….
I’d be very proud to be an honorary Alaskan.

Jean Anne Carpenter Carnahan (born December 20, 1933) is an American politician and writer who served in the United States Senate from 2001 to 2002. A Democrat, she was appointed to the Senate to fill the seat of her posthumously elected husband, becoming the first woman to represent Missouri in the Senate.
In 2002, Jean Carnahan ran as an incumbent for a full term, but was defeated in a close race by Republican James Talent; the margin was only 22,000 votes, 49.8%-48.6%.
She didn’t make re-election.

I second or third that not voting for Arnold. They created such a stink over the so-called car tax. The recall was a joke. They were nasty to Arianna Huffington. I worked in Sacramento for about 6 months when that was going on, about 3 blocks from the Capitol Building. I loved Sac while I was there, but voted against the recall, for Gray Davis during 2003. When he was re-elected, I voted Dem. What BS that all he has to say about Obama is that he’s skinny. Arnie probably took illegal steroids, among other things.

A provision of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act restricts outside employment. It says: “The head of a principal executive department of the state may not accept employment for compensation outside the agency that the executive head serves.”
Senior Assistant Attorney General David Jones said the section likely applies to the governor but it’s not clear what constitutes “employment.”
“Clearly, the intent of the statute is to make it clear these are full-time jobs. If you are a commissioner, for example, you can’t be working in the private sector. But does that mean you can’t go out and give a speech now and then for an honorarium? I don’t know. I don’t know that we have interpreted it for that purpose in the past,” Jones said.

Don’t want to trade governors with AK, either. She didn’t think TX was so great when giving “birth”, so she’d really hate CA, biggest blue state around.
The nurses were right to kick Arnie’s backside. He was insulting then, too. Karma’s a mofo, remember Arnold?
And I got a laugh out of the posting too fast comment–I only type about 35 words per min, so I know I’LL NEVER see that message!
Oh, and let me add myself to the not-a-big-fan-of -the-Governator club. I didn’t even like him much as a celebrity, although I’ll admit he has a sense of humor.
Gray Davis wasn’t much of a Governor, but all the folks who voted for Arnie because they thought he was “post-partisan” were simply ignoring the fact that he is a REPUBLICAN.
I wouldn’t doubt that he did other things besides steroids, either.

Obama is too skinny? I didn’t realize there was a weight qualification to be president.
Davis got screwed by the Enron clusterF. He signed contracts for electricity at a high rate at the time, but when natural gas prices were going up, we Californians actually benefited from the electricity rates being locked in. Most times, people don’t realize that. I agree that the budget process is screwed up, but the hard-right republicans just stomp their feet and say no taxes. Tom McClintock was termed out in my area and is trying to get elected up near Sac’to–he ran against Arnie and can’t get elected to state wide office, which is why he needs to run in a place where the republican got nailed for his connections with Jack Abramoff. Halloween is officially over. I took great delight in telling accompaning parents to vote Obama! I had 100% in cheers in favor of Obama! When I didn’t see parents (I’m sure there were somewhere nearby), I told the kids “now tell your parents that they need to vote for Obama. One seemingly 8 year old told me “they already know that”. I had a long talk with one woman who had her kid in a stroller (still got candy, the kid was cute). She told me about the difficulty that she had in getting registered, but was finally able to do so. She is definately voting Obama. It was so much fun to talk to people about Obama and everyone, I mean. everyone, was supportive of him. Sounds like Palin and Stevens run in the same pack, and like attracts like. According to Palin, she was cleared of ALL wrongdoing… no legal or ethics violations. Stevens…. not convicted to anything. So, just like the corrupt & greedy insurance companies who have the legislators in their pockets, their tactics are to deny, deny, deny…! It is unfortunate that law abiding citizens such as Monegan get sacrificed while the powerful tromp all over them on their way up the ladder. I hope this scrutiny goes on and on and on for a long time so that we can stop all this corruption.
@ Bec in Illinois—

—from wiki
Formerly county attorney of Hennepin County (including Minneapolis), she was the chief prosecutor for the most populous county in Minnesota. Klobuchar was a legal adviser to former U.S. Vice President Walter Mondale and partner in two prominent law firms.[1] She was also cited by the New York Times to be among the seventeen most likely women to become the first female President of the United States.[2]

CO Almost Native (17:17:50) — Thanks for the link on the Boehner dirty name-calling. You know, it is so crazy but not surprising how they keep crying about Obama voting “present” in the State Senate. It has been explained numerous times that they often (everyone) will vote “present” the first time. It is considered a “soft no”. But they love to twist what ever they want and can – they know no bounds on this pitbull crap.

UpNorth – even though we are sports rivals – I’m soooo glad our senators are pals!! We’ll have to see who gets appointed for Obama’s spot. I’ve heard Jesse Jackson, Jr. – but I’d love Tammy Duckworth, who almost made congress last time and is a double-amputee Iraq vet. She rocks, too.

You have my word on Bachmann’s burnt toastedness. It’s not just that El has received so much support, or that the Dems have thrown him some dough, or that the Repubs have pulled out of Bachmann’s race. It’s that I know Minnesotans. Whether Minnesota “nice” is fact or fable…it’s something they’re proud of and a reputation they defend…and slime ball politics doesn’t go very far, especially in your face slime ball politics (unlike Coleman’s whose is a little more hidden), and especially such embarassing atrocities on a national stage like MSNBC. Sure…we have staunch repubs here…but we have a much lower percent of rednecky ones than nationally. I would say a large number of MInnesota repubs, even in Bachmann’s district are the sort McCain dismissed as “cocktail party intellectuals”, in other words… the ones who are pretty appalled and jumping ship.
Yes, Bec.. I PROMISE…Bachmann is history.
P.S. I love that our senators are friends too.
I was looking at 538, and went thru to Swing State Project, where they have a map that shows poll closing times across the US (in Eastern time).
It turns out that Hawaii closes their polls at the same time as the West Coast (11PM EST). Thoughtful of them.
So that makes Alaska the last to finish: Eastern AK at midnight, and Western AK at 1AM. Since Western AK appears to be mostly the Aleutians, I think it’s safe to assume that the election is over at Midnight.
I’m afraid that the networks will probably key on the West Coast, and be shooting their mouths based on exit polls even before that. This has always pissed us off in Cali, and this year I hope it doesn’t work against Alaskans: when they announce the national predictions before the polls close in a western state, it can affect turnout, which can affect local results.
Vote early if you can. If you can’t, vote no matter what the damn networks tell you.
OK – I can see that I have “BLOGERDOSED” on here tonight. Hyped on Halloween candy and had to work all day – missed a couple days of participation. Need a little nap before Bill Maher. It was fun.
3 days to go.
Trini — dog sounds cute. But would be a problem for taking into the restaurant for lunch I’m afraid. But I hope you might be able to join us. Shikago is a co-organizer and he is all geared up, I hear. He is handing out candy right now – will probably be back on later.
Mudpoop….I just got home and MISSED EVERYTHING…

No, you’ve both got it WRONG!! Arnold admitted long ago to using steroids for that physique. Obviously since BO is so skinny, no roids!! Perhaps roid use is why McInsane is so cranky? Perhaps roid use is what caused Arnold to register as a Rethuglican? Inquiring minds want to know…

Okay. I’ve posted links here before, so I know it can be done, and I must just be screwing up.

California here too. Someone in another thread thought I was from Ocala Fl. The OC is for Orange County, CA as in real housewives of… but that is certainly not me.
I voted for Gray Davis because I just didn’t think Arnold was Governor material.

Haven’t partied with you all for a few days, but I’m sitting here eating my Halloween candy (don’t get any trick-or-treaters, so I guess I’ll have to eat it all myself…) and washing it down with red wine, feeling kind of festive.
My 2 cents on Joe the Plumber? He will be the answer to a bar trivia question before the end of this year. His publicist will drop him like a hot rock, his music contract (eye roll) is going nowhere, and if he does manage to get a ghost-written memoir out it will go directly to the remainders table. He was a plant, he’s a total loser, and he’ll be driving his pickup back to Loserville on Wednesday.
Joe, where are ya, Joe? I thought Joe the Plumber was here? No? Well, haha, you’re ALL Joe the Plumber! Yeah, that’s it. …Speaking of losers…

Yeah OCLiberal, I’ve been talking with people about jobs in Orange County–I think I’d have to live in LA county and commute. I live in Ventura County which votes overall like the rest of the country and was closely split last time in 2004. I think it’s swtiched over to blue and am hoping this is an Obama county, but I am not holding my breath for Orange County.
As an aside, we have to keep brush 300 feet away from homes, or the fire dept comes in, does it and charges you for the work so your house is defensible during the Santa Ana winds. There were some wipeouts of entire neighborhoods in 2003 and later in the very Republican areas of San Diego and Orange County–people didn’t want to clear the brush and then the fire dept couldn’t help them.
Then you read they are whining that LA and Ventura County are getting more help on the fires. It’s because they started first in those areas and were defensible.
Sometimes, ya gotta learn from the experience of others. Such as be prepared like a good boy/girl scout. This is called wisdom. I grew up in a house 2 away from open fields and many close calls as wild fires burned to the ocean.
My third and fourth grade teacher said “You don’t need a tree to fall on your head to know it’s going to hurt.” Good advice for Sarah, McCain and Joe the unlicensed plumber…
I think we need to be truthful in our references to “JTP”… Like we refer to SWWNBN, I think we need to start saying, “SAM-the-grunt”. he’s not a plumber, he fetches stuff for the real plumber.

Happy Alaska for Obama sign day!! We want a picture!!
I just nailed my yard sign to the side of the house since it’s Halloween and it shows up really well under my porch light. It’s big, and bright and says OBAMA OBAMA OBAMA to the the world! Well, to my little friendly neighborhood anyway. That’s where it will stay, and my little coonhound will make sure no one sneaks up on our porch unannounced. He’s the loudest dog in the neighborhood and just full of himself. Pod the hound will guard the Obama sign – he likes Obama, too! I’m sure all dogs would vote for Obama if they could. They like “spreading the wealth”, which translates in hound to “spreading the biscuits and toys”.
More light than heat and others:
I hope Caribou Barbie goes and hides in an igloo. Her house of cards will fall all around her. I think McClintock has more substance than she does, but he’s a nut in my book.
Elton Gallegly drives me nuts, too. He was going to retire because of some health issue, then doesn’t, trying to keep the rightwinger husband and wife team Audra and Tony Strickland off the ballot, then suddenly he’s fine and back in the race. What BS.
We have some great Dems in this area–I love Henry Waxman, Sheila Kuehl, (Lois Capps, Pedro Nava, etc.)

so much here….will take me a bit to catch up…but I’m feeling happy because of one guest that Rachel had (sorry, I’m not remembering the name)….pointed out that, historically, VP candidates who are on a LOSING ticket, have not fared well in attempting to run for POTUS!! he also pointed out that actually Palin’s popularity with the “base” is only 25% of the GOP and many of the rest are not that happy with her…..bottom line….she is probably NOT gonna be a viable candidate in 2012!!! yipppeee
Ok, going home to excersize off all the candy I ate at work. See you tomorrow!
oh dear…just wrote a long post…..am I in the spam bucket?? 😦
Just wondering if there was an explanation for Palin’s late (2 hour) arrival at a campaign event today. Search engine’s are not keeping up!
There has been a lot made of the amount of money that was spent on the Palin family clothing during this campaign. Has anyone summarized how much it has cost the campaign or the RNC to defend Palin in all these matters. How much has it cost the state of Alaska?
and now on another matter:When the polls state that those polled are likely voters,is that based on their past voting records only or do they ask that question during the polling interview? I have never been polled even though I am a super-voter. If it is the former, are the polls skewed due to the high turnout of sporadic and first time voters?

I am afraid there are alot of places who have been totally embarrassed by their republicans this year. I have an aunt who lives in Minnesota, I think we discussed her senator here, she would be the ones who wants the senate investigated for unamerican activities 🙂 My aunt was horrified, you see she voted for her.
The thing that gets to me is these politicians don’t seem to think they are saying/ doing anything wrong. Sarahs hands appear to be very dirty, if she hasn’t taken Ted Stevens like bribes I will be really suprised. Sorry you folks up there in the great white north had to find out about it along with the rest of the country. I would not be suprised to see Ted Stevens get alot of votes, like her in Washington State we who are natives of the area have no respect or love for either the justice system or the government. I am sure there are many who think Ted got a raw deal.
It is my hope that should Obama be elected he will set a new bar for politicians. He may not understand every part of the country and the individual problems we face, but he is willing to learn before imposing things that will devistate a region as past presidents have done because they were to stupid or to greedy to care.
Along time ago or so it seems I sugested you meet Sarah at the airport with torches and pitch forks, I renew that sugestion. Let her know you are on to her and that she will have to be responsible for her actions including paying back the hard working citizens of Alaska for the money she took for her kids travel and staying at the hotel Palin. I hope you get her back so you can hold her feet to the fire.

anyways…whew…now I’m here and feeling happy! I was wondering today how long it will take the GOP to send SP back to alaska after Nov 4th. I know I read where the GOP is having some big meeting next week to discuss the future of the party….but, I’m thinking, they will want to get rid of her as soon as possible, so they get some of that $150,000 in clothes money back!

Likely voters: an interesting topic. Every poll has a different likely voter “model”. Most of them ask some questions. Some throw you out if you didn’t vote last election, even if you’re damn sure gonna vote this one. I believe that some of them apply factors based on past ethnic/gender voting patterns.
If you are really interested, Nate Silver over at 538.com talks about LV models a lot.
Ultimately, it’s an estimate, based on some assumptions and calculations, of whether a poll respondent is really likely to vote. Obviously, the Likely Voter model can have a fairly big impact on the poll results, so it’s worth trying to understand the model.
What’s pretty cool this year is that a growing fraction of those polled have already voted, so they’re pretty damn likely. (Although, in some of the polls, a few percent of those who say they’ve already voted also say they are ‘undecided’. Oy.)
aussie….I could not get it to open….but then I’m tech-challenged…is there a secret?

Thank you for considering us honorary Alaskans. I believe we all have areas in our states which we are not so proud to be associated with or compared to. Heck I’m from VA where people are being told to vote on Nov 5th or by phone, or that their parents taxes are at stake if students vote from their college address, and Joe McCain lives here to boot!

Deb, no secret. Are you at the forum? I can email you the whole fabulous thing, which I can’t do here because I was unfortunately paying attention during corporate law classes. 😉
Hey Tom from PA,
Re: Polling – I’m pretty sure they use state voter files to compile their call lists, which have a LOT of information in them, including how often you have voted in local, state, and national elections. This is how pollsters can distinguish “likely voters” from “registered voters” in their results.
I have gotten a few polling calls at my house, it might just be luck of the draw that you have escaped it this time around!
strangelet- for the first time in my life, I have become “polls” obsessed! I check realclear, fivethirtyeight, pollster.com…and anything else two or three times a day! Nate is great at explaining all the polls….what on earth will I do after nov 4th???

McCain apologize to Walt Monegan, eat pie, Gov’s self inflicted ethics complaints, didn’t see anything to help his appeal, candy, Missouri elected a dead guy, Bec sad, Nebraska can have my leftover candy, Swartzenegger, called Obama “skinny”, don’t want to trade governors with AK, (for Arnie), candy, hell- when you’ve married a Kennedy…you HAVE to be an “oreo” !!

Hey, there will be Senate races — and the AK Statehouse — in 2010. Those campaigns oughta start about December 1.
did anyone watch obama with brian williams tonight….? damn, our guy (i.e. THAT ONE), is so smooth…..he doesn’t flinch at anything!
And after Nov 4th – I think there’s plenty of muck in Alaskan politics to keep us all entertained!
If what you are saying is true about “likely voters” being drawn from past voting records, I suspect that there may be a fairly large unreported bubble for Obama. One may assume that strictly based on fervor, a large voter registration for the dems, the huge turnout in early voting especially in the african-american community and a far superior ground network, the Obama/Biden ticket may be looking at an additional 1-3% spread in their favors in many of the polls.
I’m projecting 371 electoral votes but shhhhh don’t tell anyone.
Gosh, KO is on here in AK. John Cleese is on. He is old. Oh, that’s right, I keep forgetting. I am old too. LOL!
I was at the bank and the teller was in her early 20’s – I had my “I voted for Obama” button on. She high fived me for my button – she promised me that she would call 5 friends and make sure they made it to the polls.
I feel much better about passing the baton to the younger generation now than I did two years ago. Thank God/Goddess/Whatever for Obama.
Um, Aussie? I’m getting the feeling there should be more than half a meg of mp3. Apparently I’m doing something wrong. Any hints?

Speaking of the country, I was driving in one of the more rural areas of the county and the yard sign war was about even– which says A LOT considering this is “real” Virginia! Closer to town, it’s Obama all the way!! 🙂
Here in California too. I am in San Bernardinq County in Victorville. My husband I usually go to or host Barack Obama “Calling Parties” but today we took turns calling a great number of Move On. Org members to remind some to honor their promises to voluteer at their Barack Obama campaign offices at home and some to commit to volunteering. What was so interesting was that my last call was to a lady in Pennsylvania and she was fired up to be volunteering for Barack Obama tomorrow and we started a conversation about how historical this election is and how excited and nervous we were about it. I told her about you Mudpuppies and she just might show up here on this site. She and I chatted for about two hours and exchanged telephone numbers and email addresses. Also, most of the people we called were so excited to be volunteering that it just made me feel really good. Arnie is not my governor.
Also from California.. Beautiful Downtown Van Nuys. I got 2 calls tonight to volunteer this weekend, and found out Barack has a new Office open on Van Nuys Blvd! I have been going to the Van Nuys Dem HQ for phone banking and to watch all the debates. That office is always bouncing! So the Dem HQ and Barack’s Field HQ are like a block apart.
I voted last week in Norwalk. We had a train of cars going down to vote and was really nice. I have been getting some invites to rallys in Hollywood and in Santa Monica, so I may go to one of them. San Diego is also having a rally on the beach.. well they planned that, guess if Barack can speak in the rain, we can rally in the rain. If it rains. We sooooo need it.
One of the best costumes at work today was a man with Arab Clothing, he had patches of all the big oil companies sewn down the sleeves of his robe, and wore a big rhinestone Dollar sign necklace. Very political but was so original.
I work 10 hour days, so most nights I skim thru posts, then I have 3 days off to actually slow down and post.
Happy Halloween to all Mudflats! No trick or treaters here, all the neighbors turn off their lights, so no one comes down our block at all. Not like the old days. so “I” get all the candy. LOL
Great list, but you forgot Palin’s medical records, which she had promised to release last week, but still hasn’t released.
It must be taking longer than she expected to falsify Trig’s birth records. Oh well, it’s only the presidency.
Our Governor LOL I hate to sound mean but when she says stuff like this I wonder if she feels physical pain afterwards cuz that kind of stupid should hurt!! I am starting to beleive the best vote is straight democratic ticket, it is the only way to go on Tuesday.

Why do we continue to blabber on such trivial matters? Can we not rise above this? Is this what both sides are like? “he’s took my toys, he’s evil, she said this, and her clothes are expensive, and his birth certificate is not real, and he called me a name, and and and”
But for the love of god, can’t we talk about something more substantive than what a VP candidate thinks about her first admendment rights…like oh say perhaps, how a candidate feels about human rights being outright trampled in other parts of the world…you know…something that’s real…
peace… I’m oot of here…
So Sarah’s switched from bridge to nowhere to a bridge t 1798, the year President Adams signed the Sedition Act into law making it illegal for the press to say anything bad about the administration. Unlike the majority of the country, Sarah would have approved. Adams lost re-election primarily because of this stunt. If Sarah would bother learning her American history, she would know she is on dangerous ground when she starts trying to mess with a free press.
