Oh, how quickly they forget. While watching John McCain, and Sarah Palin decrying Obama for his “socialist” tendencies, I have found myself becoming increasingly amused. One of the things that defined Sarah Palin’s pre-VP candidate career in Alaska was the fact that nobody seemed to know what to make of her. I refer you to my comments on this, back in the beginning of June, 2008 titled “McCain’s a Greenie. Palin’s a Socialist. Hillary’s the President.”
I’m holding my sides laughing about the Newsweek article that has Alaskan’s all a-twitter, comparing Sarah Palin to Hugo Chavez. Having claimed my staunch neutrality about Sarah Palin, I’m enjoying standing in the middle of the swirling tornado that has become the Palin phenomenon and enjoying my popcorn. Is she a crazy creationist wingnut? A big business-hating, free-gas-doling socialist? A maverick hockey mom? The next Vice President? No one seems to know.
Obviously to regular readers, my “staunch neutrality” about Palin has gone the way of the Steller’s Sea Cow. (For you non-Alaskans; it’s extinct). I did not vote for Palin, but was willing to give her a shot. I like to think I’m open-minded. So, knowing what I know, and all the recent “socialist talk” made me look up this old post, and I was amused.
I got my $1200 energy rebate check from Sarah Palin a couple weeks ago, and so did every other human being in Alaska. This money, which came from the wealth of oil companies doing business in Alaska, got spread around by the Governor to help Alaskans defray the rising costs of energy that made the oil companies profitable enough to provide Alaska with the money for the rebate check that defrays the cost of energy…..(you get the circular idea).
At the Alaska Women Reject Palin rally here in Anchorage, a woman drove by as I was returning to my car. She leaned out of her window and said, “Are you going to get a $1200 check this year?” “You mean the rebate check? Yes,” I said. “So how can you hate Sarah Palin!?!” she quipped, looking angry and smug at the same time. “Are you going to SPEND it???” she spat. I said the first thing that came to mind, “Yes, I’ll probably donate it to the Obama campaign.” She screeched away. And I didn’t tell her the whole truth. I’ve actually spread my wealth around to lots of good progressive candidates, both in Alaska and outside.
It was an interesting exchange, though, and I’ve thought about it many times. I’ve heard other people use this logic, although not quite as directly. The basic question is “How can you vote against someone who hands you cash?” It’s really very startling. It presupposes not only that cash-in-hand is the ultimate goal we humans seek, but also that I am not making good on my end of this deal. I’ve been paid for my services, and now I’m not willing to deliver. Does this make anyone in Alaska who votes for Obama, a political prostitute who gets paid in advance, and then takes off with the cash without delivering the vote, thereby breaking some kind of implied, perverse, money-for-votes pact? To the woman in the red car, apparently it does.
I’ve seen a few references in the mainstream media to Palin’s socialist tendencies, which is good. The fact that in a society that has public education, fire departments, public libraries, police service, Medicaire, and Social Security, it seems odd to be having the conversation at all. But if Sarah Palin is going to use the term to cut down Barack Obama, she needs to be reminded that 12 weeks ago, she was being compared to Hugo Chavez by her own party, in her own state. And anyone in Alaska who IS voting for Palin because of that $1200 for every man, woman and child in the state, needs to come to terms and make peace with their “inner Socialist.”

Insightful logic; I haven’t thought about the nature of the check, but- you’re right- it does fit the definition of socialism. Delicious irony…

She’s not buying the votes in Florida, either.
I volunteered at an event here in Sarasota, today. Here are 15,000 votes she didn’t buy (out of a population of 52,000). If Sarasota goes blue, so does Florida. If Florida goes blue – I’m sorry – but Alaska will have to deal with Palin.

I should have said first and please take Caribou Barbie back, she doesn’t seem to work, even though she has pretty new clothes….maybe she’s under warantee or something.
AKM, thanks for spreading the wealth around to the progressive causes, too. Also. (That’s my feeble attempt at word salad.)
AKM, you have had Palin’s # from the beginning. Socialist Sarah it is. Here’s what I don’t understand: in a way, doesn’t that woman’s line of thinking make voting in Alaska akin to prostitution or something? “We paid you so that makes it all right.”
@mhrt, I replied on the other thread but here’s what I wondered: will Obama healthcare plan help? Obama said it will accept pre-existing conditions…
That’s hilarious, don’t spend your checks if you aren’t going to vote for the person authorizing it. I’m sure glad Bush can’t run again, I’d hate to feeel obligated to vote for him because I spent my stimulus check.
But like you, I spread it around, to Obama and to breast cancer research and I still donate to Obama once a week, looks like this will be the last week I do that, after next week he will be our new president. (ok, in January, but you know what I mean)
Some great pictures from the Sarasota rally on the Motley Moose. The crowds just blow me away!

And here’s some insight from McLame’s new BFF, Joe:
“Get out there and vote; it’s very important,” Joe said, after extolling the virtues of being well informed. “You get out here and get the American people back in charge of our government. Hold politicians’ feet to the fire when they mess up. That’s what we’re out here to do. All right?
Anyone willing to donate a fire extinguisher to John and Sarah? Preferrably a large sized, as they have done a lot of messing up…

Dang, people. It takes a long time to wade through all the comments. A little catching up.
eajphd Molten Contra Palin, I have no Harley, but I do have four tattoos and nine holes in my ears. I used to have a pierced belly button, but it wouldn’t heal properly. So, yeah, I guess Obama’s program last night wasn’t for me.
Sparky, what did you find interesting about my rants? I am curious–is it the fact that I was a tad bit underwhelmed yesterday by Obama’s program?
Let’sGetReal for “That One”, right on. You are speaking the truth. It’s one problem I have with hearing how ‘colorblind’ our society is these days or how we were a big ol’ melting pot. There is a great article in HuffPo about how white privilege means you don’t have to see racism because it doesn’t affect you, so you can declare that racism doesn’t exist. Or, like some white women are claiming, sexism is worse/more prevalent than racism. As a woman of color, I can assure you that both are alive and well.
Anyway, here is the article about racism:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/abby-ferber/i-am-racist_b_139118.html
Here is a blog by a black woman, and she in this post, she blogs quite incisively on racism and sexism:

If someone tried to tell me that Obama is a socialist, I would reply, “No, he isn’t, but I’m going to vote for him anyway.” Bah.
I am glad when this will be all over because I am so freakin’ tired of the (manufactured) drama.
From today’s New York Times (1 hour ago):
A growing number of voters have concluded that Senator John McCain’s running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, is not qualified to be vice president, weighing down the Republican ticket in the last days of the campaign, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.
All told, 59 percent of voters surveyed said that Ms. Palin was not prepared for the job, up 9 percentage points since the beginning of the month. Nearly a third of voters polled said that the vice-presidential selection would be a major factor influencing their vote for president, and those voters broadly favored Senator Barack Obama.
In a possible indication that the choice of Ms. Palin has hurt Mr. McCain’s image, voters said that they had much more confidence in Mr. Obama to pick qualified people to serve in his administration than they did in Mr. McCain….
Mr. Obama continues to have a significant advantage on such crucial issues as the economy, health care, and the war in Iraq….

Obama’s plan will help, although there are other things to do that studies have shown may be more effective in the short run: require insurance companies to use standardized forms/offer universal basic plan; reimburse doctors based on keeping patient healthy, not per procedure; coordinate patient care when numerous doctors are involved- I’ll try to find a web site about this.
Obama’s plan does require patients who have pre-existing conditions be covered; McCain’s- because he relies on buying on the open market- does not. Therefore, for us who have conditions (I’m a breast cancer survivor), insurance may be prohibitive or non-existent.

I wanted to share this story with you good people. My neighbor
is an avid Obama fan. I drove her to the registrars office to register.
The young lady was concerned that she would be rejected due
to an old felony conviction. Thanks to Mudflats and the links
you so kindly provide, I was able to convince her, that she should
try at least. She came by last evening and was sad. She had not
received her voter reg. card. I told her that it was more than likely
in the mail. She left still feeling rejected. About 30 minutes ago,
she stopped by and was tickled pink. It appears that the letter for
her was delivered to another neighbor by mistake. She is on cloud
nine right now. I have never seen her happier in the year that we
have been friends. Jumping up and down with joy, she left shouting
“I GET TO VOTE FOR OBAMA.” Made my day too. I will be driving
her and several others to the polls on Tuesday. Thank all of you for
linking me to sites that gave her this opportunity.

One thing they could start with to save money on healthcare is STOP THE DAMNED DRUG ADVERTISING! Half of all ad expenditures is wasted, according to the adage, but you just don’t know which half….
I REALLY don’t care about Viagra, Nexium, etc. There is so much waste in the drug company ads alone, that would bring down the cost. The question is would the jerks pass it along to the consumer or keep it for the senior execs?
Insurance companies have a lot of waste in them, too, having worked at one in NYC. They cut down to the bone, brought in new C-level execs from a BANK (like that had anything to do with insurance pre Graham-Leach-Bliley) and then they brought in tons of consultants to make you fill out reams of paper to document each and every project. There was one consulting firm paid 250K/month which just did PowerPoint “decks” for the meetings.
It drove me nuts after living through the very lean era, so I left.

I’d like to modify it it to: Lessons from my mother – doing as she does not as she says.
I also would like to suggest that: “What to do when your water breaks” should be the first chapter.
Dressing a Moose should also be a chapter, as should Dressing a Candidate with a budget as big as a moose.
Needless to say there are many other chapter suggestions that should be added, which I am sure other mudflatters may be happy to suggest.

I feel your pain, too. Has your sister contacted your state- the insurance commissioner, or related department? Sometimes an omsbudman can help, or some states have an insurance pool for people with issues like your sister.
She can also contact the pharm company that makes her (major) med, and see what programs they have to provide free/low-cost meds. Some do-
Does she know her health rights? She needs to find out if Aetna can deny her the meds she is currently on, especially if it is through health insurance. I don’t know about your state; I do know there are federal regs about continuation of coverage…
I have to defend poodles (the canine kind) here. Poodles are usually very intelligent. Palin, er, not so much.
OFF TOPIC AND WAY DECLASSÉ….
I was in the grocery store and saw the new cover for the Enquirer. Anyone else see that headline about Palin’s other man?
Is it me or is anyone else concerned about the fact that two 527’s will be running Jeremiah Wright ads nationally on all channels (including CNN who refused to run the Obama Infomercial last nigh) every day until the election. I don’t understand how you don’t support a positive up building infomercial but you are going to continuously play the JW greatest hits, the purpose of which is to paint Obama as risky, a radical and renegade who can’t be trusted.
I don’t know, but I am really starting to get VERY SCARED that they are going to take this away from us AGAIN. My husband and I wondered why McCain looked so calm and happy and confident that he is going to win.

@mhrt Steve —
I responded to you on the last thread, here it is again. Sending you positive vibes…:
@mhrt Steve — No! That’s so sad & awful! Hoping hoping hoping that Obama is elected so that your sister, and others like her, can get the care that they need. There but for the grace of God… we are all walking such a fine line these days. Losing a job, major medical problem, one small step from American Dream to American nightmare. I am thinking of you & your family and sending warm wishes & hopes for a better outcome and future.
On a clinical note — can your sister talk to a state social worker or someone like that who can advise her re: her rights in regard to healthcare and medications? My first question would be whether or not it is legal, my second question would be how to get her into the medicaid system if that’s necessary.
I know that sometimes we need to spend some time just listening to loved ones who are hurting, but when we’re done listening we have to start making plans to make things better.

WEEKEND RALLIES SCHEDULED?
I’ve been traveling without access to my computer, so haven’t been able to keep up with all the exchanges here–I was actually having Mudflats withdrawal pains!
Two questions for all the Alaskan residents here (I’m a former Alaskan who immensely misses that beautiful state)
Question #1:
Are any upcoming rallies in Anchorage or other Alaskan communities planned for this weekend to show how unpopular Palin is now in her home state? With all the negative attention that seems to be going Alaska’s way due to many of the states’ voters declaring they’re willing to vote for a convicted felon for Senator, it would seem a good move to show all are not in step with this kind of mind-set.
Question #2:
Have any recent reliable polls been taken to dispell the myth that Palin is the country’s most popular governor that could be shared with the MSM? I would think it would help clear up that misconception.

RE: “what am i suppose to just die?”
I didn’t have insurance for the last EIGHT years. I just got it. Good thing too because I had MRSA when I finally went to the doctor…you know the flesh eater. So I can tell you that in answer to your question, that depends on who you ask.
Ask Obama, he’ll say, “No, you deserve health care!”
Ask McCain, He’ll say, “I WAS A POW SCREW YOU!!!” Then he’ll make that damn Grampy McSame Noise “Ehhhh!”
AKM great article. I was just reading the AP story about this. Wow no state tax or income tax and you get checks from the states resources. What I don’t understand is why is it that the oil revenue belongs only to Alaskan residents. Isn’t Alaska part of the U.S. Do people that live off the coast of Florida, Louisianna or other states where they drill for oil in the U.S. get the same benefits?

damn you’re good
But, it wasn’t a gift from Sarah!
It was a gift from the taxpayers and legislature of 1976 that just keeps on giving!
http://www.pfd.state.ak.us/historical/index.aspx
State of Alaska, Permanent Dividend Fund Division, Historical Info:
“1976
Voters pass a constitutional amendment to establish the Permanent Fund (Alaska Constitution, Article IX, Section 15).
1980
First Permanent Fund dividend legislation enacted. The legislation established a program giving every adult Alaska resident $50 for every year of residency since statehood in 1959 and also established a Dividend Fund. Payment of dividends were stayed under litigation (Zobel v Williams) challenging the constitutionality of the program.
1982
U.S Supreme Court ruled the 1980 legislation unconstitutional. In response to the litigation, the legislature passed legislation authorizing equal dividend payments to all six-month residents. The first dividend amount was $1,000. The first dividend checks were distributed June 14, 1982.
1983
Residency period defined as 6 months ending March 31. Filing due date established as June 30.
1985…..and so on”
Every legislature since 1976 has dished out the payments, although the amounts have changed.
Starting with Gov. Hammond.
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/03/national/03hammond.html
“Jay Hammond, who went from bush pilot, trapper and professional hunter to become the fourth governor of Alaska, earning Alaskans’ gratitude by giving them annual dividends from gushing new oil revenues,…”
“Mr. Hammond, a Republican, persuaded voters to approve the establishment of a permanent fund to handle the state’s petroleum royalties.
The fund, which today totals about $30 billion, is used to help cover state expenditures, while interest from it pays the annual dividends. Payments peaked in 2000, with $1,963.86 paid to each person with at least a year’s residency in the state; last year’s payment was $919.84.”(This article is from 2005)
So, Sarah didn’t set this up,..Jay Hammond did,..and Jay Hammond would be rolling in his grave if he heard about SP’s conservation ideas.
Hmmm,… a Repug environmentally-conscious socialist, whodathunkit?

I think this is a very valid point that should be pushed harder. It’s not just Alaska. Many southern red states benefit from redistribution from blue states. The Northast and mid-Atlantic and some in the Midwest, in addition to CA, pay far more in federal taxes than they receive in federal subsidies. For people in these areas to complain about ‘redistribution’ is extremely ironic.
I caught two young women tearing down a large (5ft X 5ft) Obama/Biden sign yesterday. It felt good to report them to the police.

I know my sister got asthma from living close to the freeway near UCLA, but did she ask for Advair? No, but it was precribed anyway and seems to help–is there something cheaper? Maybe, something that is generic that controlled asthma for years? What about cholesterol? Could a five dollar bottle of psyllium husk work to reduce that?
It’s disgusting that we pay for this when there are people who could use normal foods to control illness, but the system pushes pills.
@oregon steve–You probably already know this, but just in case, try Oregon Health Care. They cover many people who need health care. Also, call your county social services and explain your sister’s needs; and PPARX is a potential source if she needs Rx’s but cannot afford them. ALSO, I am not sure, but didn’t Clinton sign into law a bill that said when your company switches ins. companies, the new one cannot exclude you for pre-existing conditions? I have been very impressed with our states’s (Oregon) programs for people in need. I will pray for you.

It just breaks my heart to hear stories like this, too. I have had hypertension first diagnosed at age 12, probably genetic in origin. I can not get individual health insurance at any price. Can’t even get brokers to return my calls. We actually live in a United States where corporations get to determine who is worthy of health care and where they can legally discriminate against individuals based on health status. The question is, is this the United States we want to be living in? Is this the best our obscenely wealthy and wonderfully resilient country can do? I don’t think so. We can and must do better. Lead the way, President Obama.
Buy my votes !!??
Well that was pretty explicit in the last presidential election. Bush honored his promise to pay us for electing him…
That is how its done , isn’t it? There’s a quid pro quo. Do this you get paid.
I thought it was so sleazy so transparent so unethical.
THAT was spreading the wealth around. It wasn’t just discounting the cost (tax) of government service, it was re-distributing wealth.
And no, we don’t have anything like socialism. The government does not own the means of manufacture and distribution of goods. That’s not very American.
Promote the general welfare is.
Fun fact.
There are about 27 million people in Iraq. We’ve spent about 600-700 billion in Iraq. That’s about $25,000 per person. Couldn’t we have just bribed Iraqis to cheer us and throw flowers as we passed ?
Compared to $25,000, $1,200 seems like small change, huh.
Just a thought…

Is it me or is anyone else concerned about the fact that two 527’s will be running Jeremiah Wright ads nationally on all channels (including CNN who refused to run the Obama Infomercial last nigh) every day until the election. I don’t understand how you don’t support a positive up building infomercial but you are going to continuously play the JW greatest hits, the purpose of which is to paint Obama as risky, a radical and renegade who can’t be trusted.
____________
Any thoughts on this? What to do? I am also very very concerned. I thought Barack handled the questions brilliantly last winter, but I am feeling extremely tense about it right now. Especially with the news that my in-laws are all voting the Rethug ticket, and although I thought they were smart people and knew how to read, their two main reasons are socialism and Rev. Wright.
The only things I could think of to do are donate money and keep working in NH, the only state near me that’s at all in play. There’s got to be more!!!
Rachel Maddow maybe could be press secretary.
Hands off! Rachel is mine! I love, though, how Barack refused to take her bait about denouncing conservatism. How can there even be a comparison between a thoughtful, sober, self-confident, reassuring Barack Obama and an erratic, arrogant, seething, forgetful John McCain? It’s unfathomable to me.
Bev, I would love to see Rachel as Press Secretary or Spokesperson. She would do an excellent job.

Hey Alaska isn’t merely socialist, it is downright KOMMUNIST! The state actually owns the Prudhoe Bay oilfields, sort of like a big collective oil farm. And the wealth from that collective gets spread to everyone in Alaska, both as state revenue and contributions to the Permanent Fund (from which all Alaskans draw annual dividend). Karl Marx would love it!

I went to the 11pm late night rally here in Florida with Obama and Clinton. It was sooooo awesome there was 35,000 people out that time of night wow. It was awesome. The only thing I didnt like was that I had to walk a half hour from my car to the event sight because there were soooo many cars. Other than that it was great. I even got a close up of Obama as his entourage of cars drove by me as I trekked the half hour back to me car. LOL 🙂

Oh I hope Ms Palin is on her way home to the beautiful state of Alaska. I am sooo nervious that the republicans and McAngry will try to steal it again. Palin can take her happy self back.
Blessings and thanks to SMR and Lulu, who shared some wonderful thoughts and ideas in the previous thread regarding countering the Rev. Wright bullshit. I’ve copy/pasted their brilliant thinking here, and I trust in the amazing mudflats community to generate more:
If race is an issue for your relatives who are for McCain, here’s what I would tell them. Obama’s mother was white. His maternal grandparents were white. Have they seen the Obama infomercial on barackobama.com? It’s very clear how much Obama loves his mother and his maternal grandparents. And the pictures are so touching.
And there are (and were) white members of the church Obama attended the entire time he was there. This is a racially inclusive church.
Rev. Wright did not preach hatred; he preached the truth about America’s HISTORY. Some people do not want to face some of the terrible events that have occurred on American soil, and around the world in the name of “America” (see “War in Iraq,” for one example.). Others believe that in order to make things better, we cannot stay in denial, and must face the truth.
______________
As usual, all of the M/P Rev Wright hate-mongering is taking the good Rev out of context. Is there any way to get a verbatim transcript or video of the quote being used by the hate-mongering repubs?
My only response to that sort of rubbish is that black people have the right to be angry! I’m angry about how they’ve been treated too. We ALL should be. Why are people not ashamed of how they’ve been treated, how all non-white races are treated? We should be feeling guilty, not attacking a man (US military veteran Jeremiah Wright) who is a good Christian, served his country in the war, and has something to say that reminds us of our crimes against non-white citizens? And after we’re done feeling guilty we need to channel that into a way to effect positive changes in the US.

“A growing number of voters have concluded that Senator John McCain’s running mate, Gov.
McCain….
Mr. Obama continues to have a significant advantage on such crucial issues as the economy, health care, and the war in Iraq….”

Another thought struck me about the APF disbursement and it’s been brewing in my feeble brain for awhile.
I took a peek at what the Permanent Fund is actually invested in…it’s just an accountant thing, I guess…and I found most of it to be invested in foreign, oil related stocks. Can’t remember them all, but Venezuela and Middle East Oil producers stick in my mind.
It struck a somewhat musical chord because they were (in part) some of the stocks that the Palin’s also own personally–according to their financial disclosure form.
So, isn’t it a little un-American to invest so much in foreign stocks?

A critical factor in this is that Rev. Wright and Socialism are stated reasons. They are also code words for Black – when Nixon started the “Southern strategy” it was a deliberate play on racism that used the image of the welfare Cadillac and the wild-eyed black militant as its icons. It’s the same today.
However, we don’t have to be stuck with it after the election – look at the impact of Nelson Mandela on South Africa. That country has done a lot to resolve its racial because he and Rev. Tutu were willing to take a quiet approach to dealing with people who overtly hated them.
You can be sure that the Obama campaign has examined all of the attack ad angles and is prepared to dissipate their impact without getting emotional. It’s nerve wracking to wait, but the threat from a negative campaign is far less than that from outside enemies. If you are confident that he can handle those unexpected threats, you should be confident that he can handle ones that he has anticipated for some time.

YOU ARE SO RIGHT! And your reminder is greatly appreciated. Now for those who watched Rachel Maddow and reported that she was worried, I want to remind you that “worried” is Rachel’s face in repose.
I live in western Mass, as do RM and her partner, Susan Mikula, who’s an artist. Rachel Maddow used to host a fabulous morning show called The Big Breakfast on the local radio station, WRSI, before she was whisked away to Air America. When I first saw RM on MSNBC, I was surprised to see that worried, thoughtful look on her face so often. And then I was filled (as always) with admiration, for the brilliant anti-sexism of just letting her face relax in studious repose. No smiley sunny face for our girl.
Rachel is a wonderful example of how women can play by their/our own rules. No need to preen like Palin, or act coy like Katie. And forget that (h)asinine Hasselbeck. Rachel’s not worried. She’s thoughtful and she lets it show.

Sarah Palin finds that “drill baby, drill” line will not work on everybody. Workers in a solar power plant for instance? Not so much.
Palin spoke after touring Xunlight Corp., one of a handful of solar technology startup companies in Toledo, a struggling industrial city in this swing state. The city’s leaders are hoping that the solar companies will create jobs to replace some of those lost by downsizing in the auto industry.
But Palin made only a passing reference to solar power in her speech and instead renewed her call for more drilling in U.S. coastal waters. She repeated her signature anthem, “drill, baby, drill,” which seemed to fall a bit flat on the audience at the plant even as it’s become a popular chant at her rallies.
This is the danger of going rogue and not paying attention to the campaign handlers who are there to make sure you don’t say anything stupid. If you don’t listen to them you are guaranteed to say something stupid!
When I heard that the Sarah supporters were demanding that the McCain campaign let her speak for herself , and to “let Sarah, be Sarah”, I was absolutely giddy with excitement.
You see I KNOW who Sarah Palin is. And now the rest of the country can see for themselves that despite $150,000 in new clothes, constant cramming for policy questions, and a high priced make up lady from “Dancing with the Stars”, Palin is just an ignorant hick from Wasilla who is in way over her bouffant hairdo.
She is a mannequin. A prop. A distraction. She was never supposed to do more than provide window dressing, and she may be unqualified to do even that!
And in a little more than five days, we are going to get her back.
And I for one can hardly wait!

I haven’t read every answer and someone else might have written this already, but-as long as your sister had insurance during the last 18 months without more than a 30 day gap in coverage, they HAVE to cover pre-existing conditions. She will need to provide a “proof of credible coverage” from the current insurance company and they will have to provide coverage. If she did not have coverage for 18 months, they can refuse to cover pre-existing for up to one year, BUT…ANY coverage she has or previously had will be subtracted from that year.

Hope she gets some help.
mrht steve–
Oops-it’s a 45 day gap in coverage, not 30. Believe me, I have dealt with this. Insurance companies LOVE to deny coverage, but they can’t fight this-it’s FEDERAL law.
ira2, you said it. I have had my hopes dashed before (Gore, 2000), and that was when I didn’t care about the candidate, but I couldn’t believe he lost to that yahoo. Then, in 2004, I so wanted Kerry to win, even though I wasn’t crazy about him, either. I had made plans to move to Canada after each of those elections, but I didn’t.
This time, however, so near the end, when I can actually, for the first time, vote for a winner first time in my life (out of the country the first year I was eligible, voted for Nader after ascertaining Clinton had won my second election)….I don’t know what I would do if Obama lost. For the first time, I am voting FOR someone instead of against someone (or a system). I believe that Obama can actually make a difference, and I believe that McCain would simply lead us further down the road to ruins. This time, if I am wrong about my country again, then I really must move.
Martha Unalaska Yard Sign Toon and Mayflower, you are so right. We cannot let up until the election is over, and not even then. We need to do what we can to make sure Palin goes her merry way, perhaps to…somewhere else. Night, Mayflower. Sleep well.

Coffee
Yoga or pilates and/or meditation
Sex
Loud music and singing to it
Sport of your choice (mine is running)
Monty Python and/or John Cleese material, like Fawlty Towers
A few select blogs
The WSJ and the NYT
In any order, all of the above, lather, rinse, repeat. These are relatively inexpensive things to do, given the recession we’re in.
I guess I should add volunteering, and voting, and doing whatever it takes to get out the vote.
Also, I got an e-mail today that candy from China, including pirate’s coins, probably contains melamine (the same stuff that poisoned the pet food last spring and the eggs and milk there these past few months) and you shouldn’t eat them. It’s confirmed on Snopes so I feel pretty confident about the information.
AKM and others, that is a great use of your check. Come to think of it, I need to do the same. Michele Bachmann was on the radio today, time to get out the checkbook.
Remember, breathe in and out on a count of eight before getting back to work. I agree we need the catharsis. Think how they must be feeling at Obama HQ and somehow that must help in terms of preventing your head from exploding.
I had a funny e-mail about the redistribution of wealth from blue to red states, I will see if I can find it. Someone observed the last time around that the electoral map is strikingly similar to the divide since the Civil War. A reader sent this to Daily Dish, Andrew Sullivan’s blog, at The Atlantic today, it brought tears to my eyes. Such great writers and thinkers out there, not unlike a certain person from Alaska we know, perhaps?
Quote:
The End of America’s Longest War?
A reader writes:
Earlier this week, in your post “The Top Ten Reasons Conservatives Should Vote For Obama”, you wrote under Point 4: “A truce in the culture war. Obama takes us past the debilitating boomer warfare that has raged since the 1960s. Nothing has distorted our politics so gravely; nothing has made a rational politics more elusive.”
On the one hand I agree with you; on the other hand, you don’t go nearly far enough. An Obama presidency means much more than a truce in the 60’s culture war. It means the end of a much older and more terrible war, in which the 60’s was merely one battle: the American Civil War. That is what is at stake here.
The Civil War was fought from Sumter to Appomattox, from April 12, 1861, to April 9, 1865. But the roots of the war predated 1861, and the consequences lived on long after 1865. In reality the Civil War never ended, it just shifted from a military to a culture war – the same culture war that is still going on today.
What you call the “boomer warfare” of the 1960’s was part of that larger war, marking the struggle to end Jim Crow, the century-long regime of American apartheid (Vietnam was, in my opinion, related but secondary). The end of apartheid was a second humiliating defeat for the forces of the conservative “South” at the hands of the liberal “North”, and it subsequently gave rise to those decades of distorted and irrational politics you so deplore, as the reactionary and fundamentalist forces regrouped and mounted yet another rearguard insurrection against their liberal “oppressors”, culminating in their partial ascension to power under Bush. (And we can only hope it ends there, instead of with Palin and the Christian Nationalists in 2012).
I realize this may sound harsh; I do not think Bush is a racist, for instance (quite the contrary), and I am very aware of the progress made in this country since I was young, including in the South; nevertheless, this election is clearly about race, about who and what we are as a nation, as a people, as a family (I would throw California’s Prop 8 squarely into this battle too).
So let’s be clear – it is not “boomer warfare” which has distorted our politics, or made rational politics so elusive since the 60’s: it is something far deeper, something far older, something which has been with us from the beginning in this country, and which we in turn brought with us from the Old World; something which in fact traces back to the very origin of humanity – spiritually, psychologically, politically, evolutionarily. That depth is what gives the American story its pathos and its importance. That is why the world watches us: to see if we can work it out – to see if there is hope.
And that’s why January 20, 2009, is so important: the day Barack Obama is sworn in as our 44th president will mark the third, and I believe the final defeat of the forces of repression and division in this country, and the actual end of the American Civil War.
How can I be so sure? Because when the American President is inaugurated, it is directly homologous to the crowning of the King in ancient days: the King is the groom, the Nation is the bride, the crowning is the hieros gamos, the sacred marriage. When Barack Obama is sworn in as our 44th president, a symbolic marriage will be enacted, binding us together forever, black and white. We will have chosen to become one. We will have chosen to become family. The War will be over. E pluribus unum.
The whole world will be watching this. You have stated over and over again that an Obama presidency would be “transformational”, even “indispensable”. You’re right. And you’re right that this is only the beginning. A new chapter is dawning.
Will the old guard resist? Of course. But their power is waning. Providence made sure the better man lost in 2000, and the eight years since have been just enough rope for the old, corrupt right to hang itself.
And if we do this, the founding editors of that abolitionist tract, The Atlantic Monthly, will surely be smiling somewhere.
End quote.
My response to that is, ‘May it be.’ Let us move forward at this time. And I think we will. I know we can.
Eyes Wide Open in Pittsburgh PA, I would if I could. I love saying lingonberry.
Bev, I got that email, too, and I gotta say…I was a bit taken aback. I mean, they got a record hundred and fifty million in September. There is no way McCain should be up any money on Obama. I might try to give a bit more, but I am pretty tapped out.
Chief Hussein Shikago, um, er, well, that’s….a big bean!
So the reason Sen. Stevens is allowed to vote in this election is because someone has determined that he has not been “convicted” until he is sentenced? Apparently if there is a legal challenge, he can cast a provisional ballot only?
Interesting interpretation. Right out of the Alaska Department of Elections. Of which Sean Parnell is the leading character? Would Talis Colberg have contributed to the opinion?
Begich is debating Stevens this evening. Looking forward to the report on this. It’s a great opportunity for Alaskans to get a closer look at Mark Begich. He was on APRN’s Talk of Alaska earlier this week and I was impressed with what I heard.
I think Alaskans will trust Mark Begich with their vote.

I had an encounter today that left me shaking with rage. I was so furious. Finally I have calmed down and taken action, here’s my letter submitted to Blockbuster via their “Contact Us” link. Filing under my mental “not getting mad, getting even” file:
I would like you to know that I overheard one of your employees from the local Blockbuster bragging about an incident with a customer.
According to this employee, he was wearing a NOBAMA pin at work, and a customer told him that was unacceptable, that he found it offensive, and it was unprofessional to wear it to work. This employee quite happily told him that he had been given the pin by his supervisor! This employee went on to say that the customer said that he would no longer be a patron of that branch. This employee, in his discussion, scoffed at the notion that this person would go elsewhere, given that Eagle River has no other options (nearly true, as we do not have any large video stores here other than Blockbuster), completely ignoring his egregious conduct in wearing this pin to work and further being rude to this customer.
The nature of this employee’s conduct ensures that neither I, nor anyone else in my family, will be patrons of this branch in the future.
Here’s the ‘Blue States’ e-mail from a friend in California, surprise! I have to add that I used to live in Georgia and I know about ‘little blue dots’ all over the SE and the country, because I was one.
Good night, all! Hang in there, the numbers look good, and I mean the Pollster/538 ones, not the bizarre Fox News numbers.
To: Everyone
From: The Blue States
We’ve decided we’re leaving. We intend to form our own country, and we’re taking the other Blue States with us.
In case you aren’t aware, that includes California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast.
We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially to the people of the new country of New California.
To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get the Statue of Liberty.
You get Dollywood. We get Intel, Mac, and Microsoft.
You get WorldCom. We get Harvard. You get ‘Ole Miss.
We get 85 percent of America ‘s venture capital and entrepreneurs.
You get Alabama.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states pay their fair share.
Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition’s, we get a bunch of happy families.
You get a bunch of single hockey moms. Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and anti-war, and we’re going to want all of our citizens back from Iraq at once.
If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they’re apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose, and they don’t care if you don’t show pictures of their children’s caskets coming home.
We do wish you success in Iraq , and hope that the WMDs turn up, but we’re not willing to spend our resources in Bush’s Quagmire.
With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent of the country’s fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation’s fresh fruit, 95 percent of America ‘s quality wines, 90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high-tech industry, most of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools plus Stanford, Cal, Yale, Harvard, Cal Tech and MIT.
With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88 percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.
We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.
Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred unless we’re discussing the war, the death penalty or gun laws.
44 percent say that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy bastards believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties.
Finally, we’re taking the good pot, too. You can have hat dirt weed they grow in Mexico.
Peace out,
Blue States

Love this but one other thought….
aghhhhhh. Have we all had a hieros gamos with Bush for 8 years? No wonder we’ve all been so upset……
Yahoo!
Rachel Maddow just interviewed CO Governor Ritter about voting on our great state; more than 1/3 of registered voters have already voted. Way to go Coloradans! He also discussed the judicial agreement on purged voters- they are reinstated, and can vote on a regular ballot, if they clear up confusion on their ID- they don’t have to have a box checked if they use SSN as ID. Gov was very tactful, and didn’t blame the Repugs for trying to supress voting.
Go Blue, Colorado-
Anyone see Bill Crystal on Jon Stewart? As much as I despise Crystal, I always enjoy his appearances on the Daily Show. Jon completely destroys him every time and makes him look like the true idiot that he is.
SMR, please tell me you’re kidding me. Oh, I know you’re not, but still. That is simply outrageous. Yet another reason not to go to Blockbuster.
Ok, another duck-and-cover comment from me: I wish Rachel wouldn’t be quite so nervous about the election and that she would stop turning statements into questions. I still

@Karen, Bill Kristol is an idiot. Palin was his Viagra and it’s due to Kristol and Fred Barnes (who called her a honey) that she’s even on the ticket.
I’ve been following Andrew Sullivan’s take on Kristol. I think the word on the conservative street is that Kristol’s lost all cred. Even on his own side.

Ten years ago my wife was totally disabled at age 35. For many years I carried her on my insurance, that worked until our company was downsized. The greatest thing that happened since was the Commie socialist Medicare, they provide pretty good coverage. Unfortunately (at this moment out of pocket) her medication cost over $25,000. a year. Add to that, I have been home taking care of her since January 24/7, and have just gotten our situation reasonably under control, so that I may return to work. Everything we had worked for in our careers is almost gone.
I would recommend doing whatever is needed to get her qualified for Medicare. If you need help I can give you some tips.
Lastly, my wifes family never gives a damn about this girl. Her brother came over to help her for 3 hours in April. They all live in the Chicagoland area no more than 30 minutes away. Good catholic righties that love denial. mhrt oregon”steve” never stop caring for your sister, never.

I am going to be in nervous knots, come Tuesday!
The basic question is “How can you vote against someone who hands you cash?” It’s really very startling.
Indeed. I’m sure all of our Senators and Congress-people (and even our President) wrestle with that very same question when lobbyists shower them with campaign contributions. I wish it weren’t so. But money buys influence.
I wish more people were like the politician who said:
“If you can’t take their money, drink their liquor, f**k their women, and then come in here the next day and vote against them, you don’t belong here.”~California politician Jesse Marvin Unruh, referring to lobbyists
That’s why we need public financing of political campaigns. ASAP.

As a people, we cannot move forward in this country without healthcare that is flexible. covers pre-existing conditions, and is fair and affordable. Yes, I believe it is a right in a country as great and wealthy as ours. To do otherwise it greedy and obsence. Only animals live by survival of the fittest. Nice job explaining the differences.
I don’t really care if it is socialism or not. It is right. Because the McCain/Palin campaign had spent their time confusing the American public with half-truths, lies, and misinformation, people are so confused that they do not know who to vote for or who to believe. The GOP is counting on the stupidity of an uninformed American public. This is what needs to be shouted from the roofs tops! Maybe this will make people angry enough to vote for Obama… real change.

I’ve donated more than I can really afford, but I look at it as an INVESTMENT in our country’s future. I can pay the credit card off over time, but NOW is the ONLY time we have to elect Barack Obama!
I agree, Blockbuster sucks, haven’t been there in months — they’ll find that out when they look up my member number! I don’t use Netflix because I hardly get a chance to watch movies (prefer reading!), and would be perfectly happy to watch both seasons of Deadwood and The Lord of the Rings trilogy over & over & over for about the next 10 years……….
I didn’t even go into the other vile sh!t that kid was spewing. Talking smack about Obama thinking he’s Jesus and other such crap, bragging about going to the “Welcome Home Ted” thing yesterday… This is a kid likely less than 25 years old! Maybe not even 20! Where does he get this hateful stuff from? Friends & family? It’s not like he’s out there educating himself about issues, all of the crap he was talking was pure M/P talking points!
This was at the local used book shop here, he was talking to the lady who has been working there forever. She was agreeing with everything he said. I put my books on the counter, he continued to go on & on, then he got to denigrating Dems. That’s when I piped up and said “Yeah, my husband & I used to be Republicans, but we decided not to vote for McCain when he added Palin to his ticket.” Then the little wanker says “Really? I think she’s done a great job.” And I said “Only because you don’t know how bad she’s really done. We both work for oil companies, so we know the real truth about her pipeline and taxes, she might like to talk them up, but that pipeline will never be built, and as long as oil is under $80/bbl Alaska is worse off under her plan than it was before she decided to ‘stand up to big oil.'” Then I left.
That’s another store I won’t go to again, and I will tell everyone I know how ignorant their employee is. I cannot believe they would stand around talking that smack, I guess assuming since I’m an Alaskan in Eagle River that I am a Republican without a brain.
God, I was sooooooooo angry.

Soon, if it’s any comfort, all of those movie rental stores will be gone, as we will all get our rental movies online….at least, that’s what everyone in the entertainment industry is prepping for!

On Rachel, she did look worried, but in my opinion I believe she was wwwaaayyy nervous, like ubber apprehensive, or lets say scared sh#tless. Tonight was no doubt her biggest show to date, with Barack on and everything. I am sorry she wasn’t her usual laid back self, at the same time, I don’t blame her at all. She’ll be kicking herself plenty when she watches the tape. I wouldn’t be surprised if she says something about it Friday night.
America used to have non-socialized firemen. If your house was on fire and you didn’t have the money to pay the “fire tax”, well, the fire truck would come out only to make sure that the houses who DID pay the tax didn’t start on fire.
What if we couldn’t use police unless we could pay for them? Or only send your child to a private school? Or only drive on roads if you could pay a toll for each and every one of them…even from your house to the store?
We already HAVE socialized sections in our country. Medicine is no different. Everyone could see a doctor, and the government would help fund it. I don’t understand why “Christians” are so concerned about helping the poor…I just wrote a blog entry that grazes the surface of the Bible…it has MANY more verses about helping the poor than it does about sexuality and abortion combined. I guess they tear out those pages and burn them.
I volunteered making gotv calls. So moving. One young man with children talked about how Obama inspires him to do more in life.
Glad to see people talking about the ‘wealth spreading’ that happens in AK and supported by SP, I have been wondering why this is not obvious. We have come to 2 + 2 = 5 a la George Orwell.

1.) Grab a Netflix logo online, burn to disc.

4.) Tie little ropes through the tops of each poster.

I’ve also gotten way more hang-up calls than I normally do (I never answer my phone unless I intuit who it is and that I want to talk to the person), and one day, I got calls every fifteen minutes for an hour and a half. Plus, I’ve gotten all the flyers which just end up in my recycling bin after I glance at them.

Nah, I’m kind of a biyatch sometimes, so it was only hard not to tell the kid off completely & rip him a new one. I can’t stand stupid people, but he’s a kid, so I cut him some slack — he still has time to learn, and if he stays one of the stupid Alaskan republicans (his folks are probably that way) then fine, I’m leaving this state anyway, and I hope never to return! This election cycle has been my Alaska swan song — so many new wonderful people bonding together for Obama and against Bible Spice & her Truth Squad, but we are waaaaaay outnumbered, and so I will leave with no regrets in May. My husband kids me that I will have the car packed up, so that we can drive off to Calgary as soon as our daughter crosses the stage after getting her diploma…
@Chief — you are obviously one of the great ones, too few of you out there.

________________________________________________________________
Lulu, I’ve been following this story, too. It all started with Kristol’s and Barnes’ little trip to Alaska in June 2007. They were both smitten by Palin, and the rest is history. Kristol was on Jon Daily tonight. UGH! He said, essentially, what the heck, it’s only an election!
I loved the way Jon Daily framed it – McCain and Palin are running against some vision of what they think will happen to America if Obama is elected; Obama is running against what Bush has already done to America. (profanity omitted).
Sorry, folks. I haven’t been getting enough sleep, and it’s seriously impacting my ability to unbold. Eek!

Also, if you have a few dollars to spare, Obama’s people are asking us to donate one more time to help them fight back against a big last-minute influx of RNC cash:

It’s too bad that Palin thought that just throwing cash at people woudl make them love her. It is just like the principal in Washington DC who is paying students to succeed. This may work temporarily for the poverty class. But not for long.
Rachel Maddow’s interivew with BO is great. Everything about BO’s conversation is intelligent, transparent, serious (not Smug like McCain, or incomprehensible like Palin), yet friendly. Some people have said to me “That Obama, he is really smooth.” Like is something to be suspicious about. What we haven’t talked about with the Joe-six-pack crowd is that many of them do not trust people with educations. They don’t trust authority like teachers, doctors, educated people. Yet, they will trust politicians who lie to their faces. God, I can’t wait until Tuesday. Let’s pray that Obama makes an easy, seemless win without controversy over votes.

Lifted from Media Matters:
On the October 29 broadcast of his show, radio host Bill Cunningham stated: “Traditionally, we think of women as Democratic voters because a lot of women who are single are vulnerable; they need like a daddy government to keep an eye on them.”… But you see something different with Sarah Palin.
Great response by blogger Wonderkitty:
Oh, I can assure Cunningham, as a single, Democratic woman, I am VERY interested in keeping the government out of my home…

GUYS AND GALS!!
Palin oh-12 now has an unfavorable rating at 56% compared to 35%. Whooppee!!
I’ll start by saying that I don’t have a huge problem with socialism because I believe that education and healthcare should not be left to the free market.
However, I have to disagree that the oil money strictly represents oil company wealth. I say this because I believe that people outside Alaska need to realize that the oil companies don’t own the oil. Even though they like to call themselves the “Producers,” they don’t really produce anything. They extract a resource that has been produced by geologic processes over the course of millennia. They buy leases to extract the oil, and for their trouble, they are allowed to keep a lot of the profit. I don’t like to refer to the part the state gets as a TAX either. It’s not a tax really. For the oil resource that belongs to the state, the companies extract it and get a hefty share, but the state claims a share as well. We are not really redistributing wealth as much as trying to establish a system in which everyone gets a fair share for their labors and for their proximity to the resource.
The permanent fund has become something of an entitlement program, but I would like to see it invested further to provide not just for the people of today but for the people of tomorrow who may inhabit this region after peak oil. Norway invests a lot more of its fund rather than liquidating huge amounts every year. Even though their fund began after ours, it is worth significantly more, and they provide many services for their citizens.
So I’d like to shift the discussion from redistribution to a sense of what it means to share the resources that none of us can really lay claim to as our sole property. The natural resources should belong to the people at large to some extent because they are the riches of the land. This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land–I’m willing to subscribe to the words of Woody Guthrie, and I hope we can all subscribe to an ethic of fairness.
Enjay in Eastern MT, oooh, thanks for reminding me that I have to buy Mudflats swag. I am glad there are black long-sleeved t-shirts (black is my favorite color).

I’m thinking the campaign has reached the point where it can’t deny how well it’s been doing in some small hardened red states, and given the potential for a loss in a really big state they would like to dedicate some real resources to states like MT and ND, which probably weren’t budgeted for.

First and foremost – BRAVO. It’s fun to say that you gave Sarah’s check to a charity or more than one. That check to each (PFD eligible resident who ACTUALLY files for a PFD) of us did nothing to solve rural Alaska’s pressing energy cost issues that we knew were coming this winter. Getting a good pres in the White House will do more for rural AK than Palin ever has!
Second – if you donate to Planned Parenthood, I suggest you designate the entire fund to the Alaska chapter. The University of AK now charges students $50/mo for birth control. 22 months ago, before Palin, it was $5 / mo. A lot of students can no longer afford that much. Maybe Planned Parenthood can help with the students with a lower cost?? So they will use it??
Obama is seriously spending. !! But I think with all the negative attack ads McLoser and Barbie are running they need to combat them, especially with the Wright ads looming, although i think that’s a dead issue and will just make mcgrumpy look bad..

There is a great article in HuffPo about how white privilege means you don’t have to see racism because it doesn’t affect you, so you can declare that racism doesn’t exist. Or, like some white women are claiming, sexism is worse/more prevalent than racism. As a woman of color, I can assure you that both are alive and well.
)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Reminds me how so many don’t ‘feel’ the effect of wars; act everyday and all day as if they don’t exist because it’s not affecting them in a direct way. Don’t matter what color you are, what religion you got or what sex you are.
Right now as we sit here reading in our nice cozy environment and writing about sexism, racism and politics; [and STUPID Sara shit especially :)] expressing ‘our pt. of view’……somewhere somebody is experiencing the honest to god effects of the wars in a very real way. Be it our sons, daughters fathers and mothers of every color and religion or our neighbors the real problem with America today is we have wars and they don’t touch every single sole in America.
Maybe if or when war comes to this country (hope that never happens) we will think differently how others view the world. For sure we will think differently about war forever if it ever touches us in that personal kind of way.

“WHOA! $5 to $50. What happened????”
Sarah Palin happened. My good friend Karen just left her job at the University as Director of Student Services (she moved up north). She told me that when SP won the gubernatorial campaign, they purchased a double order of supplies because they were afraid that she would target the service. She did.
Hmmm. Is that info out for public consumption?
Montana for Obama? Yeah, so what?
“Generally, its three electoral votes are overlooked by the presidential candidates. This year, however, Obama decided to go to Montana and meet-and-greet. His two days there gained national attention because he watched his wife at the Democratic National Convention from a living room in Billings. So that might partially explain why Obama is competitive in Montana and other red states, although I think a larger fact is at work.”

Our Dem. headquarters building here in Grants Pass, Oregon, was picketed today by anti-abortion people. They stayed on the public sidewalk, but their signs were so large (baby-killer, pics of unforn babies, etc.) that the Dem. hdqtr. building could not even be seen. I am not too concerned; I think Oregon will go Obama anyway.
@Marty (VA) Hussein McLoser Songbird, I don’t care if you get everyone else sick in the place (especially if they are Republicans), YOU MUST VOTE!
@Lulu, hm. I definitely think it’s time for you to go to bed. Night! Night to you, too, @BS.
@Chief Hussein Shikago, keep that righteous anger burning brightly as long as it doesn’t consume you. Believe me, I know about consuming anger.
@mhrt oregon”steve”, sometimes, you can only be there for the other person. It does sound like you are doing everything you can to help your sister. I am sure she is grateful to have your support.
@AK907, amen to that. It really bothers me that the news is so sanitized when it comes to the war. We should be seeing the pictures night and day of all the people (American soldiers AND Iraqis) who are dying, being maimed, etc. What did W. tell us to do in order to support the troops? Shop. We as a country said we would change, be better people after 9/11. Well, I am still waiting for it. Hopefully, the better country is around the corner.

What’s up with Eugene? Who gave him the koolaid?
he says “But compare the bunny-in-the-headlights Sarah Palin of just a few weeks ago with the much more poised and confident Sarah Palin of today”. REALLY ??? She hasn’t spoken since, so how did he come to such a conclusion.
A prepared Palin speech, and an unprepared Palin speech 😉

Night asian,
I am going to sign off too.
Good night my fellow muddie pups.
Til then…
@political amazon, welcome back. Dive into the ‘flats, and you’ll be fired up once again.
@Chief Huessein Shikago, don’t forget the Iraqis. The numbers are hard to get, but they are estimating a hundred thousand. That’s a lot.
@Hick Town in W PA, I love Gene Robinson, but I disagree. She’s still stupid. She still makes no sense. Even if she does run for whatever whenever, there are enough people who have seen through her that it won’t really matter. At least, I hope so.
@Chief Hussein Shikago, good night.
The gun people are crazy. Obama supports gun rights (one thing I don’t like about him). They need to actually look at…oh, hell, what am I saying? Let them drink the crazy juice and eat their own.
Aussie, I never understand their logic. The questions I always ask them: When was the last time a Democrat came for your gun?

The Transcripts you requested. Sorry if it is a repost:

Though I don’t agree with everything that Wright believes in (particularly the whole Government infecting AIDS thing), I don’t feel like I have the right to question any one’s love of country or patriotism. He came from a place that this middle-class, blessed white girl from a loving and caring family could never begin to understand. I have worked hard for my achievements, but I don’t begin to pretend myself that I can touch that level of struggle, growing up as a black man in the racially charged civil rights movement. Once the tapes were out, politicians conveniently forgotten that his church was a must visit when they were in Chicago.
You also might want to give them a copy of the Audacity of Hope sermon. I am not religious, but still found it beautiful. Heck, just say that you ran across it, found it moving and you wanted them to read it. Then tell them who the “monster” preacher was:
http://sweetness-light.com/archive/wrights-sermon-the-audacity-to-hope
Last, but not least, sit them down and make them watch “A more perfect union” on youtube. Our guy says it better than any of us ever could.
AsianH,
I am with you on the gun issue. One of those touchy topics, though.
Sat. I will be out going door to door here in MS, and I asked the man that heads up the Democratic party in my county if he thought I’d get shot. He didn’t think so.
@Road Runner (21:23:12) :
You could also argue that no Republican majority has outlawed abortion. Logic is not their strong suit.
I just read there is currently a major Republican radio push aimed at ‘conservative’ (presumably, therefore, “gun-loving”) Democrats, saying Obama will take your guns, blah blah blah.
I had to talk down a unionist Dem voter from MO from “Obama’s going to raise taxes” just a few weeks ago. If they believed the Repub tax lies, who knows what else they would believe?
Ah, me.

I think this is burnt out punditry. There always seems to be a lot of silly predictions around the end of an election. I can’t see Sarah going moderate because of her religious beliefs and because it isn’t in her nature to be conciliatory. I suspect Eugene hasn’t done enough research.
lynn hussein hussein:
One more thing, about the whole socialism thing, just tell them its crap. If they don’t want to vote for our guy, says that fine, but its because they fear socialism is completely unrealistic. Both sides know its stupid, but it fills time. Discuss the progressive tax system which has been around since Teddy Roosevelt (Mccain’s hero) and follow it up with the youtube clip of Mccain defending this system to a townhall questioner in 2000. Tell them that the tax levels are only going up about 3% (Clinton levels) and that they were higher under Reagen.
Tell them that the bitter truth is that we have to get money from somewhere. We can’t tax the middle class more, they don’t have it, so we have to tax the very rich. Also make clear that unless your making over 600,000 dollars a year, you are not going to see more than a couple hundred dollars extra tax return. That bracket is when it gets hefty. There is a lot out there in this regard, but direct them to his plan and maybe even consider talking about the historical implications when the middle class gets to small (Mexico, French Revolution, etc, etc), corruption runs rampant.
You might not change their minds, but at least relieve their’s when we win.

Yes, but let me chat w/ my friend in the AM tomorrow. it Just so happens she flew back in today for a Halloween visit so I can pump her for more of the details and post back here in the “Internet tubes”. I also have your email address so I’ll let you know through those “email tubes” also.
Sorry – I just can’t stop thinking about Sen. Ted Stevens and how he SO needs to retire and get a life. And have some shame.
Good article (Diary) at the KOS (watch out for the over-use of BOLD tho)
How Obama is Fueling the GOP Civil War
“”this very tactic of Obama’s, winning over opposition and SOFT support on other side, is scaring the bejesus out of GOPers, he’s OUR Reagan, appearing so calm, so reasonable, so charismatic as he dismantles their constructs one by one… and make no mistake slowly and surely he’s been dismantling bedrock conservative principles of de-regulation, trickle down ecomonics and small, non-involved government. Now he’s surely been aided in this DISMANTLING by the economic crisis and Alan Greenspan’s own admission there’s a FLAW in his de-regulation ideology, but he’s giving the opening to other rational fiscal conservatives to question their own bedrock principles.””

‘to save money on healthcare is STOP THE DAMNED DRUG ADVERTISING’
Good Point.
I have heard (can’t substantiate this) that only in the U.S. and New Zealand can drug companies advertise.
@mhrt oregon “steve”
Per HIPAA your sis should still have the same coverage she has now if they are changing the carrier of the insurance it has portability. She is not changing jobs. The company supplying the healthcare benefits is changing the carrier. It should be no different. Pre existing conditions should not apply in a case like this.
Check here:
http://www.cms.hhs.gov/HealthInsReformforConsume/
I find this circular benefits vs. rewards thing that politicians use very similar to the drug dealer handing out ‘free samples’ of weed or coke or …oh, wait a minute don’t the pharma companies do that now too…hmmmm. Plus, Bush jumped on that same ‘bandwagon’ when he released our Economic Stimulus checks…and now a HUGE govt bailout check in the billions! Cmon we need the people to be independent (and yet utilize) NOT be DEPENDENT on our govt. That’s my two -cents worth! 🙂
I know. An associate of mine questioned why I was posting things about Palin that seemed so negative and pretty much said the same thing — why would I be against someone who pushed the $1200 check. I posted about this on your site but didn’t seem to get any response out of it (although it was just a comment, not like I was bloggin’ about it like you are).
So she got nasty and calculated the cost with each kid and pretty much told me I was two faced.
AS IF IT WERE PALIN’S MONEY????!!!!
Sigh… and so does that mean I MUST, HAVE TO vote for Palin just because of it? hmmm
Sometimes I like to blog on the ABC News site, but more and more there are so many people who say they are for Palin, who say the most awful, racist things, but who call themselves Christians. I really would like to understand why she attracts such hateful people. It is really depressing. I thought we had come a lot further in our society.

Are you a member in the Forum? I looked for you in there so I could send you a personal message but I couldn’t find you. But what the hell, we’re pretty much all friends here anyway so I’ll just put my question to you here.
You mentioned in your first comment that you were a breast cancer survivor (after I mentioned that I regularly donate to breast cancer research). I was just curious, have you heard of the “sister study” or are you involved with it? If not, you should look into it. I think the information they gather through the sister study is critical to the research being done and every woman who has (or has had) breast cancer, or is related to someone who has it should check out the sister study as it helps with determining a lot of hereditary factors involved along with other similarities in the overall conditions of breast cancer patients.
It can be a pain at first, they come to your house and take about half of your blood (well, they fill about a dozen little test tubes anyway), DNA swipes inside your cheeks, pee, etc., but then it’s a just a matter of occasionally answering a few questions and they keep you updated on any advances made in research.
Anyway, this is way off topic for this thread (that’s why I tried to send you a personal message in the forum) so I’ll stop here and get back to my own site to get started on my last few blogs before the election.
All Mudpuppies here have a great weekend!!

Good try.
This energy rebate program was in place long before Palin was the Gov of Alaska. Decades in fact.
Maybe someone in Alaska was a socialist, but it wasn’t her.
Owen if the energy rebate program has been in place for a long time before Palin, why is she taking credit for it? She can’t have it both ways. The term socialist is stupid. Palin has been falsely slinging it around about Obama all month.
Let’s be realistic. $1,200 doesn’t even pay most peoples monthly mortgage bill.
If Exxon and other oil companies are making billions of dollars of profit quarterly, when there is NO real help for people in the middle class who have thousands of $$ of debt, who are struggling but still paying their credit and mortgage bills on time, when the government helps everybody BUT IT’s OWN PEOPLE – I think that lady in the car (spitting her words at you) needs to wake up (maybe she’s a call girl or something)!
Wake up lady!
Calling someone names is just so second grade. Grandma used to say if you don’t have something nice to say, keep your mouth shut. Just because there’s a presidential race, this is not a license to act like an ass. Unless you are an ass, in which case, well, you don’t have much choice…
At this point, we’re looking at a Republican party that is bordering on Dictatorship.
No thank you…

We’re all socialists honey…got news for you…this country IS social…to some degree…
Social Security, medicaid, medicare, wall street bailouts…. It’s kinda the “one nation” thing…

Off Topic:
I just saw Bristol carrying her baby, Trig. How far along is she supposed to be, now?
She was about 5 months along they said about 2 months ago, right? So, she must be 6.5 7.5 month at least right?
Is she showing like a woman who is that far along? Does she look different than when mommy announced she was pregnant?
Just wondering
It’s not socialism until a Republican front-runner says it is. Otherwise it’s just mana from heaven no one needs to ask about… =P
Isn’t state support for Special Needs Children like dear baby Trig socialism? Just ask’in.
don’t be surprised if the republicans don’t pull a fast one before tuesday. it has been done before…remember the hanging chads???
about mccain winning, i hope everyone will think about iran and him wanting to fight, fight, fight. we will be in 3 wars and not enough men and women in the service…so it will have to be a draft.
and who would in their right mind, vote for someone that a jury found guilty???if that happens, you all get what you deserve. i guess the same goes for voting for mccain. palin for a president…heaven forbid!!!
I wish the major employers where I live in Michigan would give us a check because of their profits. I’m still waiting for GM, Chrylser, and Ford to send me one. Oh wait they are broke.
So your obviously not voting McCain. Agree with you there.
http://thetop10reasons.com/the-top-10-reasons-to-not-vote-for-john-mccain
It doesn’t look like you like Obama unless I missed something.
http://thetop10reasons.com/the-top-10-reasons-to-not-vote-for-barack-obama
I am going to write in Ron Paul this year. I know he’s not going to win and stopped campaigning because he did not get the Republican nomination. Figured my vote was wasted by voting for either of them because Obama and McCains policies are basically the same. No real change is coming from either.
I can’t disagree with any of Ron Paul’s stances especially when he wanted to eliminate the IRS, bring home all of the troops around the world and shrink the U.S Government.
you are so vile. I wonder why you keep getting featured.
Marianne,
Maybe AKM is getting featured because people are more interested in how people perceive politics than superstitions of how Halloween is “dedicated to evil forces?”
Just a wild guess…
Educationally disadvantaged types like Sarah Palin, Joe the Plumber and their vociferous adherents can’t be expected to know the true meaning of the word socialism. To them, socialism is synonymous with anti-American, treason, tyranny, Arab, Muslim, Godlessness, evil or whatever else they imagine it to be. But surely John McCain and his better informed surrogates must know that the governments of our closest allies—Britain, Canada, Italy, Sweden, Germany, Holland and Israel, to name some—all have well-entrenched socialistic components, like universal health care and retirement plans. And aren’t our own Social Security, Medicare, NASA, National Park Service and mighty Armed Forces all government-funded socialistic programs? And how about Sarah Palin’s proposed $45 billion program for special-needs children? Isn’t that pure socialism?
The “vulgarization” of American politics, as noted by Peggy Noonan, would be more aptly described as rabble ignorance.
