Rule #1 – Know Your Audience.

30 10 2008

Public speaking.  It puts fear in the hearts of many, but if mastered, it can be an invaluable skill and can launch wildly successful political careers.  And as any public speaker can tell you, the first thing to do, before putting pen to paper, is to know your audience.  Here are some helpful tips from “School for Champions.”

Your purpose in speaking to a group is to inform, persuade, or entertain the audience. Your motivation is to get satisfaction from expressing your ideas and getting recognition or applause from the audience.  In order to achieve your purpose, as well as to get the expression and applause you desire, you must satisfy the audience with something in which they are interested. Thus, it is important to know what your audience is interested in, what their expectations are and even what mood they are in.

Makes sense.  And I’ll bet it’s really helpful to know your audience when you’re speaking all over the country in different places, and to different people all the time. It’s a chance to make them feel special, and like you really care about them, and have bothered to learn a little something about their needs, and interests.  But, how do you know what your audience will be like?  How do you learn about them?

You can find out about the audience through research before you speak, through interaction at the beginning of your talk, and by making adjustments during the speech.

Before you speak–and even before you prepare your speech–you should know what sort of audience you will have. What is the nature of the group? What do they expect to hear from you? Do they have any special interests or prejudices about which you should be aware?

Yes…research.  I bet it’s really handy when out on the campaign trail to have a crackerjack research team, so you know who you’re speaking to, and what sort of “special interests or prejudices” they might have.  Unless, maybe they took the day off, or maybe you think you know about sports geography on the East Coast.

Yes, that’s Sarah Palin today in Erie, thinkin’ all Pennsylvanians must just love those Phillies.  Errrr…. Big mistake.  But, if we’re feeling generous, we could remember that Alaska has no major league baseball teams, so maybe she just couldn’t believe that a tiny little state like Pennsylvania would have MORE than one, and that Pirates fans might not share the love.

But sometimes, no matter how many excuses you make for someone, the fact that they just aren’t thinking is hard to hide.  For instance, take Palin’s recent visit to a solar technology startup company in the battleground state of Ohio.

Palin spoke after touring Xunlight Corp., one of a handful of solar technology startup companies in Toledo, a struggling industrial city in this swing state. The city’s leaders are hoping that the solar companies will create jobs to replace some of those lost by downsizing in the auto industry.

But Palin made only a passing reference to solar power in her speech and instead renewed her call for more drilling in U.S. coastal waters. She repeated her signature anthem, “drill, baby, drill,” which seemed to fall a bit flat on the audience at the plant even as it’s become a popular chant at her rallies.

I think I actually would have paid money to be present in the audience at a solar technology company, and hear Sarah Palin start chanting, “Drill Baby Drill!”

Isn’t that right Toledo?!?  How ’bout them Phillies!?!  YEAH!!!

I totally agree, AKM.

@Lulu, ha! You WEREN’T dreaming.

I, too, would have paid money to be in the audience when Palin started bleating her inane “Drill, baby, drill” chant to a solar technology startup company.

New poll results in NY Times – “All told, 59 percent of voters surveyed said Ms. Palin was not prepared for the job, up nine percentage points since the beginning of the month. Nearly a third of voters polled said the vice-presidential selection would be a major factor influencing their vote for president, and those voters broadly favor Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee.”
Thanks Sarah!!

Interesting how she seems totally oblivious to all the booing, and that she’s made a gaffe. I don’t follow sports, live in California, but know enough not to talk about the Phillies when I’ve visited Western PA. Surely she has a handler . . .oh, that’s right. She decided that it’s better to let Sarah be stupid rather than scripted.

SWWNBN is probably right in thinking that her handlers have mishandled her because they all seem to be in the same low IQ pool and low information status, as well as being micro mental midgets. Collectively or at least one of her advisors should have advised her about the “Philly’s” and the Xunlight Corp. But advisers that would put “Joe the Plumber” on their campaign trail, who is not a plumber, who talks about taxes, (and he has not paid his own taxes) are truly mentally challenged. And they are running for the two highest positions in the United States? UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

Good article (diary) on the KOS – watch out for the over-use of BOLD tho.

HOW OBAMA IS FUELING THE GOP CIVIL WAR

“”this very tactic of Obama’s, winning over opposition and SOFT support on other side, is scaring the bejesus out of GOPers, he’s OUR Reagan, appearing so calm, so reasonable, so charismatic as he dismantles their constructs one by one… and make no mistake slowly and surely he’s been dismantling bedrock conservative principles of de-regulation, trickle down ecomonics and small, non-involved government. Now he’s surely been aided in this DISMANTLING by the economic crisis and Alan Greenspan’s own admission there’s a FLAW in his de-regulation ideology, but he’s giving the opening to other rational fiscal conservatives to question their own bedrock principles.””

Send in a box top and 50 cents, they give you a degree. How can anyone think they’ll get a serious, competent education there after seeing what they turn out!

BTW. In my sixth grade class, if anyone gave a speech with so many run on sentences and unfinished thoughts as she does, they would fail. Even my second language learners. I expect better command of both the language and content from 11 year olds than has been expected of her.

“Alaskans, after Obama wins, can’t you just make her go away.”

We ALL have to make her go away!

We can overcome. It won’t be long for her own hubris & not too smart mavericky personality to catch up with her – even though there will be excuse after excuse and lie after lie tumbling from her lips There will be lawsuits and ethics complaints, currently and probably more to come. The full Legislature convenes in Jan here in Juneau, and she’s thumbed her noses at many of them already (in addition to both the Superior and Supreme Courts of Alaska). It’s highly possible that pressure will be put on her “mini me” Attorney General to resign as he has already done some questionable things on his own. She had State Commissioners hassling Walt Monegan – which means the actions of the Commissioners may well be involved in the Troopergate II investigation, which was expanded to include more people than just SP.

It’s up to ALL OF YOU to keep up with these events and do what is necessary to oppose her wherever you are. She is the Sarah Life Form (someone said that a month or so ago and I loved it) and she will try to overcome and adapt. She will gladly try to assemble her zealot army, but I’m afraid that there aren’t enough of those to win an election. Plus some of them might try to move to Wasilla, which could be kinda weird and funny at the same time. You know how people get when they “adore” an idol no matter how flawed or stupid the idol is.

Because her zealot army won’t be big enough, she will have to try to attract and distract throughout the country. We are ready for her – that’s where all of YOU come in.

OK – bedtime for me! I just scared myself thinking about those whack jobs of hers following the head whack job back to Alaska! Not really.. just kidding..we are ready…you be ready, too – for the NEXT FOUR YEARS!

If those beyond dimwitted and stupid remarks were from her script, then her handlers are throwing HER under the bus, (getting crowded under there) figuring McCain has lost, but wanting to blame her. She’s made a lot of enemies over time, but she may have met her match in McCain. He’s been using people and tossing them aside to get ahead a lot longer than she, and has the organization and money to back him up. Ought to be interesting to see who comes out of this on top, or if they destroy each other in a shrieking snipefest full of bad language, back stabbing, and soap commercials. As the Stomach Turns* come to real life!

When will other republicans stand up and say that they do not appreciate the christian conservatives being considered as the base of the party? That is part of the reason the GOP is losing. The picking of Palin was to energize the base, but it also turned off the rest of the conservatives. She does not energize the rest of the conservatives and they are all defecting. RC: you have hit on a huge one with this. After the election the trauma and drama in the Reublican party is going to be UGLY. Reagan moved the blue collar voters into the R column and with them the fundies. They have thoroughly f’ed up this country. Consider: Repubs at the same time think that Sarah is the future of the party, and that Sarah is responsible for losing this election. They are going down on failed capitalistic policies (Greenspan, Graham and the rest of ’em) and things are going to get expensive for a bunch of spoiled arses. They are quite piggy so the class warfare is going to be nuts. I think this is the crisis that will face our new president. Domestic freak-out.

The country has been redistributing wealth from 90% of the Americans to the uppermost rich people under the failed policies of the bushes, reaganacs, and really, back to Nixon (although he did a LOT for women’s rights and the arts).

We’ve been underwriting their banks, their big big loans, deregulating their markets while we sit by just paying and paying and paying while they tan and shop and have plastic surgery. That’s my English major-art historian view of economics.

Granted, he got Cs, but he still went. His Daddy bought him the Texas Rangers for a bit. John McCain has six houses and thirteen cars. The Palins have over a million in assets. Who are the elitists?

I have three rational explanations – 1, he really hates the federal government right now and this would be the ideal revenge; 2, he knows his endorsement would be the kiss of death for Sarah if it becomes widely known, after all people will wonder why did he back her if they aren’t involved in some political hanky panky; 3 maybe he’s hoping for a presidential pardon.

responsiblecitizen08, unfortunately, the GOP has become so toxic that the moderate conservatives and some even not-so-moderate conservatives feel compelled to flee. That’s why I think there will be a third major party with the old GOP being shrunk to the smallest of the three parties.

By the way, for all the Reverend Wright crap being thrown around, someone should tape all the bile that spews from the mouths of Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, et. al, and let’s see who really hates America.

AKM & All —

Perhaps we can spin this Stevens statement to give us happy thoughts. Maybe he is thinking that the very worst thing for her is for him to endorse her. Like the SNL skit where MacDaddy is trying desperately to get out of having W endorse him. Perhaps Ted is trying very hard to LOSE, so that stepping down is no longer an issue, and so is working on alienating any republicans out there who would have voted for him but think Bible Spice is a big steaming pile of doo so now that they’ve heard that they know he has lost his mind so he has lost their vote?

How in the world could an endorsement from a convicted felon, asked by McLame, the repub senate leader and even Bible Spice herself be considered a GOOD thing? Keep your friends close and your enemies closer!!!!!!!!!!! Ted has been around the block about a million times, and you can be sure that he is up to something with that statement! If voters around the U.S. know that A) he has just been convicted of being an unethical politician, and B) he has been siphoning off their tax dollars for big pork for Alaska, surely that endorsement cannot bode well for the perception of her by lower 49 voters…

Imagine the headlines: Bible Spice didn’t get the endorsement of her state’s largest newspaper, but recently convicted felon, US Senator Ted Stevens, thinks that she will make a fine president someday!

I hope you are right. I think it is a shame that conservatives have allowed christian fundamentalists to run the party. Former Senator John Danforth wrote an excellent book about this very subject. I believe it is ” Faith and Politics.” It is a very good book and I would highly recommend it no matter what your party persuasion may be. Also, “Our Endangered Values” by Jimmy Carter talks about the infusion of religion into politics. He talks about how the Southern Baptists basically accused him of being too secular and how the Southern Baptists became overrun with the fundamentalists. Both very good books.

Obama campaign is big-spending penny pincher

“Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has collected a record-shattering $640 million, but only two of his staff members are among the 15 highest-paid workers in the general election, according to campaign finance records. The rest, including the three highest paid, are employed by Sen. John McCain.

The Obama campaign, despite having more than 700 field offices across the country, compared with fewer than 400 for McCain, has spent slightly less on rent than its counterpart. And even though Obama has raised $400 million more than McCain, he has spent less on fundraising consultants”

Second in command with high probability of First in Command. And speaking of lies, that seems to have been and continues to be part of her strategy in achieving her dream.

We aren’t out of the woods because it doesn’t happen this election. She’s 44 years old with a lofty agenda for herself. If the pressure is not put on her to stop, legally, we will see her again. After this election, what are WE as a nation going to do about her?

After this election is over, will people continue to follow her activities or will they become complacent? I firmly believe, and I will continue to say this, she is a problem for ALL of us. Keeping informed about SP is critical. And whatever action we can take and support Alaska needs, we must be ready to help.

The Times of India:

The surest sign that McCain is on the backfoot is the decision by his campaign to crank up robocalls and advertising in his own home state of Arizona which was written into his column. The enormous $ 600 million war chest that Obama has generated has enabled him to outspend McCain 4-to-1 in the final days, causing panic in the Republican camp. Some Republicans are hoping that there will actually be a backlash against such spending, but that doesn’t seem to be happening since it is the electorate itself that is bankrolling Obama.

Obama’s itinerary for the next four days – can you volunteer?

VIRGINIA BEACH — Senator Barack Obama is spending the final four days of his campaign mining for votes in places where Democrats have not turned out at full strength in recent presidential races, hoping to offset other areas in swing states where his candidacy may need a lift.

As Mr. Obama arrived for a rally here on Thursday night, the finishing touches were being etched into his itinerary for the last 96 hours of the contest. He is scheduled to visit at least eight states across three time zones, focusing on liberal and conservative regions from Nevada to Florida where his strategists believe the Democratic margins could be increased by one or two percentage points.

“Don’t believe for a second this election is over. Don’t think for a minute that power concedes,” Mr. Obama said, imploring his supporters to consider the critical importance of their ballots. “We have to work like our future depends on it in this last week — because it does.”

Who is the crazy person who thinks if people can’t afford insurance, they can get Medicaid? HUH? And thinks $5000 will pay for insurance for people who can’t get Medicaid? HUH?

The Medicaid limits are very low for adults, and most states require that a person be disabled or have no income with a child to get it. VERY FEW adults are eligible for Medicaid.

And our family coverage, for my husband, my teenage son, and me, is $1700 a MONTH. And we have to pay $1000 deductible for anything other than doctor visits and prescription drugs. PER PERSON. SO if we have an ER visit, lab work, etc, we have to pay the first $1000, plus 10%. I had a stroke 14 months ago and we are still paying it off.

HAPPY TENTH ANNIVERSARY! You can celebrate on Tuesday night!

Good morning all! I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, hate waking up in the morning, coming here and seeing all I’ve missed!

First – Joe the air-quotes plumber : It says a lot about the McCain-in-the-@ss campaign that they are using this guy – unlicensed, owing back taxes, now suspended driver’s license, obviously uneducated guy to campaign for them, practically join the ticket (maybe as official mascot). After the election, maybe he and SP will be sharing that jail cell both haiving been convicted of tax fraud.

It’s gonna be amazing, the Repub Party bloodbath that ensues when they lose this election BIG TIME! McCain’ll go commando, outing all of those who forced him to choose SP thus blowing his one chance to be Pres. The pro-Palin neo-cons against the neo-con-Obama-supporters who smeared McCain and shamed their own party, The moderates who were originally represented by McCain against, well, the rest of them. The pro-Palins against the anti-Palins (she lost us this election). Bloodbath! And the good thing about it is that they’ll be so busy imploding that Obama/Biden will be able to move quietly ahead with taking back our country.

SP’s stupidity : I think most of those real stupid slips are her own. Just proves day in and day out how uneducated she is and how she will never understand that she doesn’t understand. I must say, tho, that she did look momentarily thrown off by the boos. Understood something was wrong, but did she ever figure out what? And if so, who did she blame on that one?

Yeah, I am for a graduated plan where everyone has basic coverage, and then you pay more the further up you go. No one should die from something that is easily preventable. No child should be going hungry….but I am a hopelessly lefty socialist.

I’ll bet you and your husband have had some interesting “conversations” in the past. What sent him over, exactly?

Diana,
It started with Katrina.

He was so furious that he hated Bush with a passion. People dying, babies not having access to clean water, “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job”, having a birthday party while people were being raped and murdered in the dome. He voted for some local Democrats in 2006.

He gave up on Bush at that point, and it was like a lightbulb went off. Homeless mentally ill because Reagan closed the institutions with no follow up. Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy. The war. Our daughter joining the Army. Bush’s jokes about WMDs while kids are coming home in caskets. It all just hit him over a period of time. He respected McCain, but makes fun of “Maverick” and refers to the Seinfeld episode where George tries (in vain) to make a nickname, T-bone, for himself. (He actually calls McCain T Bone now.) His pick of Palin sealed the deal. He believes that McCain is suffering from early dementia and Palin will be President. He hates the way their campaign is going, with slamming Obama and not having any sort of plan, and instigating bigotry and violence.
The final nail, for him, was when McCain put “airquotes” around the health of the mother in an abortion. We had to have an abortion in the fifth month of a wanted, planned pregnancy because I had hypertension so badly that I was risking kidney failure and dialysis until I could get a transplant if I continued the pregnancy. It was horrible, heart-wrenching, and not something that should have been dismissed like that. NO woman wants an abortion at 5 months. NO woman takes it casually. I miss her almost every day, and wonder what life would have been like with her. We named her Alice Francesca. If there were any way we could have saved us both, we would have. We couldn’t. She was too small, and we didn’t have time to develop her lungs. We had to decide quickly, but there really wasn’t a decision to make. I had two kids at home who needed me. He was more angry than I was about McCain’s dismissal of “health of the mother” and his eagerness to outlaw abortion in all situations. He wanted to scream at him.

So…probably TMI, but he will never vote for a Republican again. Funny how you can be pro-life until you are in a situation like that…we loved Francesca, but my life was more important.

It is amazing that so many of us have gone through such tragic experiences. I so feel for you and your husband. Things like this open our eyes to a lot of things, of what is important, of what is needed, of what we expect to have access to. It is incredulous that there are Repubs who think that having access to an abortion – or any other medical procedure – in this day and age, in a country as medically and technologically advanced as the US – should be denied. And those air quotes around “a woman’s health” as if caring about the life of the mother was just something Barack made up on the spot was despicable and show’s exactly what McCain thinks of women – aside from how he treated his first wife, how he has treated Cindy in public, choosing plastic toy Palin as running mate, it all tells so much about him.

Every time Mc repeats lies about Obama and Obama’s record, lies that have been debunked over and over again, also shows Mc’s true colors and how little he is owed any respect.

Somebody explain this to me, please… if the pro-life people want to forbid an abortion to save the life of the mother, and the mother dies, how is this “pro-life”? Or if pre-natal tests show that the baby won’t be able to survive after birth, how does making the mother go through the whole process of pregnancy and labor and giving birth just to have her baby die in her arms (or more likely in an intensive care crib) correspond to “pro-life”? It doesn’t make sense, it’s cruel, it’s inhumane, it’s wrong.

Gee Jamie, you’re having difficulty accepting the idea that John McCain was crucified for you and came back to the United States to live a redeemed life of public service in which he cast aside his old ways, including his old wife.

This pseudo-Christ narrative has been a driving part of his campaign. It helps mark him out as the Christ to Obama’s anti-Christ. It puts Sarah in the role of Mary Magdalen, a woman with failings, whose great faith saved her through her commitment to serve her Lord by witnessing for him after he is no longer among the faithful. Of course, they don’t really want to claim John is the One so Sarah becomes Deborah or Esther as needed.

If you find this hard to visualize all you have to do is look at Fred Thompson’s oratorical performance at the convention. In it he described John McCain’s descent into sin, as a prodigal son, his suffering at the hands of his enemies, who hang him by his arms, his return to grace through seeing a guard make the sign of the cross in the earth. All of this renews his faith in God, while a fellow prisoner making a makeshift flag renews his faith in America.

Ever wonder why Sinclair Lewis said “when fascism arrives in America, it will be carrying a cross and wrapped in the flag”?

Steph aka Beans Harpoon Hussein-Palin,

Your story of having to abort your baby at five months was moving. I hope you realize that almost all “pro-life” advocates would agree that someone in that situation should be permitted to have an abortion. McCain put “air quotes” around “health of the mother” because it has been interpreted to include mental health, which is so subjective that it practically means abortion on demand. Before Roe, all states permitted abortion to save the life of the mother, and as long as there was a legitimate health risk, a doctor’s judgment would not be questioned. McCain was being grossly insensitive, but I’m sure he knows that continuing a pregnancy sometimes endangers the mother and he was not intending to ridicule people like yourself. He forgot he was not addressing a conservative/anti-abortion audience that would have understood what he meant. I’m not voting for him or suggesting that you vote for him, just trying to reduce polarization and anger here.

This is the most accurate description of Sarah Palin I’ve come across ;

a bubble headed mystery unto herself

Whatever happened to the progressive party of Abe Lincoln? oh yes, now I remember. It was hijacked by hate filled racists, religious wing-nuts, casting out witches, speaking in tongues and preparing for the end of days. North to Alaska is the current anthem.

After this election is over, what will they do? The hoods are off and the emperor has no clothes.

With any luck Susan Eisenhower with her group and Colin Powell will form a progressive Conservative party.

I love the Democratic Party, but every country needs checks and balances.
I respect conservatives and appreciate some of their ideals, I’m speaking of the Susan Eisenhower, Colin Powell variety.
They are intelligent and thoughtful, they really proved to “put Country first”.

I can’t imagine the deflation and disappointment they must feel at this time.
Cheers to them for being who they are, and I really hope they form a new party for themselves.

The rest can join Sarahs Salvationtionists, They will seek to abolish abortion, sentence gays to a pray away prison, stop the fruit fly studies, get rid of birth control, bring back segregation before they bring back slavery, and if they are really fired up, a pregnant teen in every house! Who needs a chicken in every pot? Why that is just socialist!

Rashid Khalidi is An American-Born highly respected, widely published professor of Arab Studies at Columbia University. AKaurora:

I’m sure this has been said before, many times, but it cannot be said too often.

Rashid Khalidi is not, and never has been, a terrorist. He does not now support, and never has supported, terrorists. He is PALESTINIAN – Palestinian-American, to be precise, and is a respected and well-known academic. I have read some statements of his and have heard him speak on PBS. BTW, he’s not even Muslim (not that it would matter if he were.) He comes from a well-known and respected Christian family from Jerusalem.

So what we have here is Palin sliming a good man’s name, and lying about him, in order to bring down another good man. It’s loathsome. But prejudice and ignorance about the Palestinian people and what’s really been done to them is so great in this country that this horrible tactic might actually work, at least for some voters. And that infuriates me.

31 10 2008

Re: Khalidi,

We knew that the GOP universally despises Muslims and associates them with terrorists. Now it appears that Palestinians share the same fate, based on their ethnicity rather than their religion. If supporting pro-Palestinian causes makes you a terrorist, than the United States is a terrorist state. Our policy towards the creation of a Palestinian state is woefully inadequate, but it IS our policy–just like it is Khalidi’s. His contention that the US is biased in favor of Israel is simply the truth–not anti-Semitism (btw, the term Semite refers to all people, including Arabs, in that region–not just Jews. The term is a reference to their shared language, not Jewish ancestry. It is actually Palin and her ilk who suggest that there is something inherently wrong with Muslims who are anti-Semites).

__________________________

Narcissists often victimize their children and other family members but heck, they will victimize anyone available and who is more available than immediate family? However, with children of Narcissists the tendency is often more likely that the children will also be Narcissists.

I don’t know enough about Track to say that’s the case with him. I don’t see it at all in Bristol who always appears rather sad looking and rather self-effacing in public. Willow…I don’t see it but she does spend an awful lot of time with her mother campaigning. Trig…for obvious reasons I can’t see him becoming a Narcissist but Piper…yikes!

I see Piper appearing in public way too much with her mother, waiving to the crowds like a Junior Princess Diana (although the little girl obviously doesn’t understand exactly what’s going on around her). Piper spends way too much time on the campaign stump (used by her mother because Piper is so darned cute) when the child belongs at home with her grandparents or aunts and should be in school. I see on Piper’s adorable little face how much she’s enjoying and really getting into all of this fawning attention from press and rabid fans of her mother and I fear she could easily grow up to be just like her mother.
