Open Thread – Mudflats Shop is Open! Mudstock II in Chicago!

28 10 2008

You’ve been asking, and now it’s here!

(drumroll please)

I’d like to introduce the new link on the sidebar which will take you to The Mudflats Shop! Many of you have been requesting t-shirts, buttons, etc., and I’ve finally got a Cafe Press shop up and running with the gracious help of Mudflatter Lisa! The shop is where you can bedeck yourself in a brand new Muddrobe, for far less than $150,000! Although, if you do spend $150,000, you will receive one of every item in the store, hand delivered to your door by me personally. (sweeping bow) I might even bring Brian.

If there’s something you’d like that you don’t see in the shop, please feel free to make a suggestion either in the comments, or via email.

In other sidebar news, I’m removing the link to the Mudflats Amazon store, but you will still be able to access it from the Forum. WordPress allows only one commercial link, and I don’t want to violate the rules and irritate the lovely folks at WordPress.

So, that’s it! I’m really excited to see what you all think of the shop! And it has not been used yet, so please let me know if there seem to be problems that need fixing.

*****************************************************************************************

Also, Mudstock II is coming up this weekend! Chicago area Mudflatters who want to join together this Sunday afternoon for fun and fellowship, please email 4waryears@gmail.com for the details. He is coordinating the gathering. Mudstock I in Pittsburgh was a resounding success, and everyone had a great time. Here’s looking at you Mudstock II! >tinks glass<

One week and counting. I am rapidly depleting the Costco-sized bottle of Tums on my desk. No sign of Brian the moose lately. He’s off somewhere chewing bark, oblivious to the whole thing. Ah, to be a moose.

See you in the morning!

I watched Morning Joe on Tuesday and they was working out how McLame could win this election! Joe started talking about how bush won at the very end! Something about a drunk driving citation and a bin laden tape! Then Joe said McCain can’t win, Obama has to lose and it has to be this weekend! Is this a warning to Obama? Is this a possible try to use fear against the American people again? Then today Bush had a closed door meeting with the republicans! If something happens this weekend, it was planned to be this way for McCain to win! I seriously believe they are up to something! Not 30 minutes after morning joe, msnbc suddenly had McCain listed as closing in! They kept giving the wrong poll numbers for the states! Now they are posting that info all over! Later Bush had a closed door meeting with the republicans!

I say that Obama has already proven his competence to become our next President! McCain has proven his incompetence, First when he made his first presidential decision by picking Sarah Palin as his vp choice, The second time he proved his incompetence was from the time McCain stated ‘The fundamentals of the economy are sound’ then after the economy meltdown, McCain continued to prove his incompetence to be President! I doubt that anything short of his stealing the actual election can help him! The McCain campaign wants to win too badly! I think they are up to something terrible!

I posted this all over politico and on other places! I want it out there in case they do something! Someone please tell me I am imagining this!

Darn, I wanted a T and maybe some boots…winter is on it’s way here any day now, though it was a gloriously nice day for raking leaves. Tomorrow I’ll be away most of the day doing the volunteer thing at the Demo office.

Oh, one more thing, I’d told a friend I’d take her to the movies for her birthday today and when we got to the cinama she decided she wanted to see W. At first I wasn’t so sure I wanted to see it, but since it was her birthday and I’d promised she could choose the movie, I didn’t argue and just bought the tickets. Good thing it was the early show and tickets where 1/2 price. I for sure didn’t want to pay $8 to see Bush again, even in a movie. The movie actually wasn’t that bad and reminded me all the more why I’m working for Obama this week.

sjv (23:22:52) Hey sjv. I think we’re all anxious, and in a state of hightened observation. Is there any reason why we shouldn’t be at least a little suspicous of the GOP, Bush, and McCain? All are capable of bad things, as they have ahown us time and again.

But we’re going to be okay, I know that. Complacency is what will catch us with our pants down (sorry). Obama and Biden are smart, have taken really good notes from election cr@p that has happened in the past, and have prepared and are preparing for it as we speak (or write).

Money we’ve donated is helping to provide protection at polling venues and follow-up/investigation in cases of potential ballot fraud; Mr. Obama is slamming McCain with TV ads in the most effective areas of America; tens of thousands of individuals seeking hope are standing in the rain at Obama’s rallies, while McCain cancels appearances or ends up speaking in front of a fraction of the number. The Repubs are turning on each other and are experiencing numerous bizarre internal issues. Obama, being a superb community organizer, is capturing states before unheard of for a Dem, so that theoretically, he can lose a big state or two and still win this important election.

I sincerely believe that Obama, Biden and their surrogates are anticipating every worst-case scenario and answering the best they can. The rest is up to us.

AKM,..my joy today, having been offline for 2 (aaarghh!) has been to see the KO clip where the RNC worker called SP a “Whack-job”!
On the other hand, totally disgusted by McCain/Palin down to the wire dirty pool, and playing the race card.
(Ought to make it very interesting for her dealing with natives in Alaska -)

Now, as for the TUMS,..please try this,…
I had the WORST recurring heartburn for YEARS. I mean the ‘can’t lie down’ heartburn,..the ‘tums/pepsid/zantac- doesn’t work’ heartburn.
Then, one night in a fit of “I ran out of antacids!!!!!!!”, for some reason beyond my comprehension, (I think I was contemplating drinking my infant grand-daughter’s “Gripe water”), I shoved 3 olives (green with pimento) in my mouth, chewed them to death, and my heartburn disappeared – for the entire night!

Since then, I have not bought a single bottle of antacids. Only olives. I keep a spare jar at the back of the fridge in case someone eats the other one.
Seriously, it has worked for other people, too, as ridiculous as it sounds.

I too (like many other concerned progressives) juggle conspiracy theories concerning an emergence of October surprises. One involves a 2001 Obama interview that the McCain campaign is apparently trying to get its hands on. I haven’t read the entire text yet on Huffington Post, but I would guess that by tomorrow, Sarah Palin will be attacking on a new front.

At the same time, I am intrigued (not overjoyed, just intrigued) by the news that Vanity Fair has been pursuing a story on an alleged McCain car crash that occurred 40 years ago (visions of Chappaquidick) just OUTSIDE the gates of a Navy installation and resulted in the hospitalization of McCain and the death or hospitalization of another person.

The Navy gathered the records and filed them away.

Through the Freedom of Information Act, Vanity Fair (along with at least one wire service) has attempted since August to get the Navy to release the 1964 accident records; nevertheless, the Navy asserts that any information it might release would cause far more harm than enlightenment, at least so close to the election.

It seems that both McCain and Palin have led charmed lives, at least in their abilities to previously sidestep personal scandal.

Jamie, Floridian in France

Good morning all, I join you now.

@Sparky – You seem to ALWAYS be here! When was the last time you slept?

Couple of things:

Larry King finally had the b**ls to ask a Repub (Ari Fleisher) how Sarah Palin’s tax increase on AK oil companies then giving big fat checks to every citizen differed from “spreading the wealth around”? Of course Ari avoided the question and talked around it. Larry DID NOT have enough guts to pin him down for an answer.

Obama on the French news :
This morning on the radio there was a 10 minute segment about the huge indian reservation in AZ and how McCain’s policies and lack of presence in his own state have effected the Indians of AZ. They also said that it is a true sign that Obama is only 4 points behind him in his own state and that AZ may just go blue!

Last night the main evening news on France 2 had a whole segment that started out by explaining about “communities” that are in themselves individual voting blocks in the US – Latinos, whites, Christians, etc, but that within each community there are now sub-communities that may vote differently than the group as a whole. And then it smoothly ran into how Obama as a “métisse” (mixed race) actually represents the real america or the future of america and how he will be best placed tto understand and represent Americans now (it may not have been that direct, but almost).

Pretty cool!

29 10 2008

Hey Mudflatters — ABC has a blog by Jake Tapper who finally did a real blog piece on the Sarah-nator. I recommend it, though unless you know how much Tapper spins for McCain/Palin, you won’t appreciate how stunning it is. Off to bed now that I’ve checked in, read the comments and feel cozy from the sense of community. Hey, when Sarah shows up can you superglue her Manolo Blahnicks to the sidewalk so she stay’s put?

Here’s the ABC link: http://blogs.abcnews.com/

Hey all…I was reading a children’s book with my son about fish and this is the definition of barracuda: ‘Barracudas are big, fierce fish that swim among the coral reefs. When they come by, all the other fish hide away.’ Uh-huh. Is there any more real estate under that bus? Memo to barracudas: if you eat all the other fish, there’s no one left to play with!

Great store, AKM! I need a few things there…I love the Mudflats image. All of the items are done with great care and style…thanks.

After spending all of these weeks looking at the polls, my head is swimming and I wonder if any of them are accurate any more. What’s strange is how McCain/Palin claim underdog status when that absolutely belongs to the Obama campaign, in so many ways. I confess I want to see a total blow-out. I want to see a total repudiation of the last 8 years.

To all of the haters and fearers out there who say this would be the end of civilization as we know it (not on this blog, but you know what I mean), I say, you’d have more credibility if you had complained when the same was true of the Republicans. And you know what, it has almost ended, we are in a pretty deep hole. But I fundamentally believe that good Dems have a different governing philosophy and it will only get better as we move past the narcissism and recklessness of the Baby Boomers. Also, there is a reason the Founding Fathers set up all of those checks and balances. Now they need to be put back in place, and no signing statements, please.

So the most accurate poll is still the tallies on Election Day. The numbers for early voting are looking good. Getting ready for a final push this weekend for state and local races, too.

And just for grins, here’s one of our family’s favorite videos:

For those suffering from EAD, like me.

I want to go hang out with all these cool people in Alaska…after reading a bit more, I don’t think Sen. Stevens has any really honorable choice but to step down. You have to know when to fold ’em and really I think it is long past that time for him. Fresh thinking is needed, and the first order of business is to get cracking on VECO, which seems like a corruption magnet versus a business.

What is the point spread in AK these days? Oh, no, election polls again…these web sites are enjoying their many hits, I am sure.

Some Senators Are Calling for Stevens to Resign

A small but growing group of senators are making one of those tough calls politicians love to talk about–they are saying the Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) should resign. The group includes John McCain and Barack Obama, who don’t want to appear soft on felons, but also includes Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR), Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN), and Sen. John Sununu (R-NH). Perhaps they are unaware that there is an election in a week and if the people of Alaska want to get rid of Stevens they can handle the job themselves. Why are they calling for his head now? For Democrats, it makes them look good and emphasizes that Republicans are corrupt. For Republicans, they want to put as much distance as they can between themselves and Stevens. Smith, Coleman, and Sununu are all in difficult reelection battles and all appear to be losing. All of them fully understand the consequences of appearing to condone the actions of a corrupt senator. Also, should Stevens be reelected and the Democrats move to expel him from the Senate in January, Republican senators would have to vote on the expulsion motion, something few of them particularly want to do as a vote either way will offend many Republicans. For them, the best-case scenario is that Stevens wins reelection, and then resigns, forcing a special election to fill the seat. This election would probably pit Sarah Palin against Mark Begich, something Palin has a decent chance of winning. Of course, if Begich wins on Tuesday, it doesn’t make a huge difference if Stevens leaves the Senate now or on January 5, other than a couple of votes if the Senate is called back in session after the election.

Rapture Spenard Palin

Hey mudflatters, yesterday when my local paper came out there were 3 special letters to the editor concerning presidential candidates. The editor had requested a “pro-candidate” letter from three politically involved people he knows in the community. Well, the supposedly “pro” McCain letter was an anti-Obama RANT that was positively embarrassing. So, of course, I immediately sent in an email to the paper. The editor, with whom I have spoken before, because he always calls or emails all the people who send in letters, promptly emailed me back and ended up chatting with me for a while on email. He said that he has told the anti-Obama woman more than once that she needs to stop watching Rush and Hannity and go out and learn something.
Anyway, in the course of our conversation, I brought up Mudflats as a place he might enjoy visiting. Well…he said he’s been a happy lurker here since “Failin’ Palin was nominated.” Just wanted to let you know that the editor of a liberal small town paper thinks Mudflats is just swell.

I too am nervous….the world is. The credibility of the US is on the line.

If anything nasty happens (as you fear) or this election appears to be stolen I can assure you the United States of America will lose ALL of its allies. We, the world over need the US but you also need us. I can almost ‘betcha’ that the US cannot and will not risk it.

My son (my baby boy) is in the military so I can assure you that my heart is in the right place.

BTW I heard on the news here in Australia that Barrack has had over 400 death threats….more than any other potential US President…..now that is scarey and I pray that he is kept safe.

McCain’s gaffes: Fatigue or old age?

“You know, I think you may have noticed that Senator Obama’s supporters have been saying some pretty nasty things about western Pennsylvania lately,” McCain told a rally of 35,000 supporters in that state.

“And you know, I couldn’t agree with them more,” he said, as the rally silenced and some standing behind him froze.

Oh, another comment on a different subject. I was very pleased that the governor of Florida extended early voting hours to accomodate the large turnout. The guy seems to have some sort of integrity or something (another gov changeover I failed to notice, just like Palin). But I was APPALLED (not surprised) when some GOP person promptly said that Crist just blew the election for McCain by extending early voting hours. Anybody else feel slimed with they say things like that? Do we really want to have a president who can only win if voting is suppressed? Why does the GOP think it is even okay to SAY that, much less think it? Forget all the people involved. Just this attitude alone divides the two parties in a way that the GOP can never understand.

Upon re-reading, I didn’t mean to offend all of the Boomers…what I meant was moving from the ‘me’ to more of the ‘we’ generation, and I think Obama has been articulating that well. I think the Mudpups fall into that category anyway, so no offense intended.

Also, MoDo has a funny ‘script’ on Palin as her NYT editorial today.

Finally, our local bakery ‘cookie poll’ (you vote by buying a Dem or Rep cookie) is 1200 Obama, 300-some McCain. Nationally (I guess there is a national deal among bakeries) the numbers are 33,000 Obama, 20,000 McCain. This bakery is a local independent one, you might find this in your town, too.

Don’t let FL Gov Charlie Crist fool you. He is a repub climbing the ladder. He has been running away from MCain the past few weeks — first he was on the VP list and had to get engaged so all of the rumors about him would stop. Then he was replaced as most popular gov, by Palin. I think he extended the voting hours to try an keep the voting problems minimal on election day. Nov 4th will be crazy here.

if Obama takes Florida (which I pray will happen), it is because of the enormous grass roots organization his campaign has established here in Florida. And not because of Charlie.

I posted this on another thread but I offer it for anyone that hasn’t seen it. I think that it captures what is happening in this Obama miracle.

I have a very bad habit of analyzing things to find out why they happened. It’s interesting and frustrating at the same time. I was thinking about this election and also reading the posts by the Mudflaters and going to other sites that Mudflaters have referenced. I’ve been around this earth for more years than I like to remember and I have never seen an election like this. An example is this website.

There is no reason for this site to be popular outside of Alaska unless something special was happening but there are posters from around the globe. The interest from countries around the globe is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. (Could it be that other people are pulling for us?) Many people have admitted to an addiction to this site. (Not me; I can quit coming here anytime. I quit this site ten times a day.) What is that special thing happening that draws people to this site? I doubt that it is just because of Palin. What makes Mudflaters hang onto every word from the moderator and then cry for more?

I went to the DailyKos website and saw pictures of Obama standing in a driving rain and speaking to 9000 people. Every picture showed people with eyes that beseeched Obama to live up to his promise to change America. People were listening to him as if he was the only one in the world that could save us from ourselves. Many of the pictures showed faces that had almost despaired that America could be saved but they are willing to rally around this man in an attempt to give it one more try. I scrolled down to the pictures of a McCain rally and saw about 200 people in a warm, dry gym listening to their pick for President. It strikes me that there is something wrong that 9000 would brave the elements to hear Obama speak but 9000 wouldn’t sit in comfort to listen to McCain.

I see Obama talking at his rallies and I remember people saying that there would never be a Black President. I see the people listening intently to Obama and I can tell that they do not see a black man; they see an intelligent man that really seems to care that America is hurting bad and he wants to fix it. There seems to be a new idea that we must take leadership from whoever is qualified no matter what the color of his skin is; that this is no time to be a racist.

What is this special thing that is ruling this election? I’ve come to the conclusion that it is a special kind of spirit like nothing that has ever been on this earth before. It cannot be seen, heard, weighed, tasted or touched but you can definitely feel it. You must beware of this special thing as it will enter your body and consume you and fill you with hope for the future. I do not see the same thing with the McCain campaign. I only see fear, disgust, confusion, a bit of racism and even some hate. There is none of that special thing in the McCain campaign.

Good morning Aussie! I also saw the clip of McPain-in-the-@ss that you are refering to. And he tried to correct himself once or twice and just kept sticking his foot in his mouth farther and farther. The crowd was incredulous! Didn’t know what to think!

This morning I sent my mom in Fla one last plea (and then shoort me and put me out of my misery) telling her to “put aside her stubbornness, put aside any prejudices she may have, and put aside the idea that listening to either candidate speak is a useless waste of time and unnecessary in making an intelligent decision..” and BEGGED her to give Obama 30 minutes tonight (his info-whatever he’s calling it) to convince her himself. I am sure she won’t answer me, but will she watch? How persuasive am I? Or am I only the crazy daughter?

My son’s philo. tutor (a man originally from Camaroun with relatives in the States) is so excited about Obama (I bought him a tee-shirt!) and finds the time to talk passionately and excitedly about it at the end of every lesson. antsy, thanks. I don’t trust repubs, but will certainly grab free stuff from them, like extra voting hours. The GOP seems to be going into “every man for himself” mode. Crist’s self interest just happens to coincide with ours at the moment. Crist gets to claim some temporary high ground, which I’m sure he will need, given that he pissed off some rabid vote suppressors. Maybe he realized that another massive voting controversy in his state isn’t beneficial to his career in the long run.
Oh and on a lighter note, I’ve been chuckling at McCain’s statement last night that there would be no world series delay of game for infomercials in a McCain presidency. lol. What’s he gonna do? Take over the media and nationalize it? Does he even realize that in trying to sound like applepiebaseballAmerica he just came off as a silly goof? Jamie, you know the old saying – You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink …..

Maybe your mother will watch the informercial because people will be bound to be talking about it on Thursday ….

I have a close friend from Mississippi, who used to say to me, “Anyone but Hillary” in the years up to 2007. I sensed that it was received redneck “wisdom” and would yell at her (nicely) and tell her that I didn’t believe that was her opinion at all and remind her that she was a highly educated woman who certainly ought to be developing her own political awareness (she is in her thirties). For years it went on. Then finally Hillary declared – and then didn’t get the gig.

Soon after Barack Obama got the nomination, my friend told me that she had been listening to Hillary’s speeches and had had a change of heart. Why? “Hillary had a good plan”. I know I have that vote for Obama, but it took two years.

I guess people have this kind of change of heart in their own good time, Jamie.🙂

Thank you for your well-articulated words. You have said what I’ve been feeling and thinking but haven’t been able to convey in writing, or in words. I think I will copy and paste your post into an email to myself so I can read again later. Honestly, this election-the spirit of it brings me to tears. I was at the Obama rally yesterday and the cold and rain were painful but was symbolic to the hope that the people there have. They braved harsh conditions to be there– as did Obama– I couldn’t have blamed him for canceling– but it shows his character that he was there for the people who need him most…. (and if I use this to define part of Obama’s character, I then think about Mc/P’s character in reference to them canceling because of the weather.)
Anyway, I’m not nearly as articulate as you– thank you for your words.

Jamie and everyone reporting from outside the US– thank you too! Your perspectives are invaluable. It is so important for all of us to remember that the world is watching us- and this election is a world event- it will effect all of us. I have hope that the hope and integrity will prevail.

Your thoughts and words are right on. As I read, you made my insides feel warm when speaking of Obama, then tight when speaking of McCain.

I have been know to miss those “gut” signals in the past, but this summer I vowed to become more self aware. One of the ways I am doing this is going back to church (Catholic) and even getting involved in an adult religion discussion group each Tuesday evening. Last night, I went to the discussion group with my Vote Obama pin on. My discussion leader looked over to me and said “I am praying that Obama wins this election.” A mountain of relief came over me, as I was not exactly sure how the Catholic Church was feeling about the candidates. We later discussed the fact that the Church was not endorsing one candidate of the other, but encouraging us to vote with our conscience and asked us not to focus on one particular issue. We must look at both candidates from every side and make the decision from there. It is obvious that a surprising amount of Catholics in Vermont will be voting for Obama because of his overall character, steadiness, love for family and God, and his desire to serve all Americans.

I thank you all on this blog for being a part of me during my time of conversion and self awareness. You have taught me so much over the past couple of months.

One month and one day ago, something happened in my life that took a very closed down person and began opening her up. I was an abused woman for about 12 years and over the course of a nasty 3 and a half year divorce. lost custody when my attorney quit because I was broke and wound up pro se. I got screwed, the only thing my ex had left to use against me was a human being. I found my child. Yesterday was my 44th birthday and she thanked me for being the mother she knew she always had, and not the mother she had been told I was.
I was emotional enough before this happened. I would come here and WANT to hope, read the posts and sit and weep. The emotion and temptation to dream, were there but I was fighting and fearing it.
After initially talking with her, I noticed life was really different. I also noticed I felt like I did 17 years ago when I gave birth to her. Any new mother will know the emotional overload I refer to where long distance phone commercials for big telecommunication companies make you absolutely bawl. Well, those emotions are rampant for me the last month and a day, then I come here again.
I have talked before about going to Alaska and Alaska saving my life. It was there, that after several years, I learned to cope with my loss and learned how fluffing tough you can be and survive life.
I have so much hope now, that I can’t help but believe Obama will win. I come here and read the posts and ones like bobg’s reduce me to tears again. SO many of you are so passionate with your words and thoughts.
I will wear my mudgear with pride.
You people have been part of something so much bigger that has spider webbed in my life in ways I just do not have words to express the gratitude.
It’s the timing. It’s our time. Thank you all for being mudpuppies and giving me something to hang onto when I didn’t think I had anything left to hang on to any longer.

I sort of wished that top McCain advisor had expanded on why Palin is a whack job. I think it was Chris Matthews who said it had to one of three guys. The Republican pundit on his show tried to downplay it but they all agreed that Politico wouldn’t have reported if it wasn’t true. I think enquiring minds want juicy details! (I think after the election we get some.)

Marty: I read your comment in the previous topic asking what McCain’s policy are. I agree it’s hard to know from listening to either McCain or Palin because: a: all they do is attack Obama and b: I can’t understand a word Palin says.

However, I think his policies are pretty clear.

1. Give all the tax breaks to top 5% – aka the rich.
2. Increase wars
3. Put a freeze on all government spending except for defense aka more wars.
4. Make our health care programs worse – not better.
5. Screw the middleclass unless your (fake) name is Joe and you are a (fake) plumber.

But speaking of positive plans…
I wonder if anyone has paid much attention to Barack Obama college tuition plan. He explained it a little bit more in the Rolling Stone interview. Basically a college student who perform 100+hours of community service can earn a tuition credit of $4000 per year.

I’ve been a Girl Scout leader and service manager for years. We put community service at the top of list. Most of the girls in my troop right now are working towards their Gold Award. To earn a Gold Award you need to perform 80+ hours of community service. 100 hours of community service is something we completely understand how to do.

I off-handedly mentioned Barack’s proposal in a troop leader meeting I was at the other night. Now mind you, I was probably the only democrat in that room. But every single leader in that room listened intently to Barack’s proposal and started asking questions. If there is one thing mothers of teenagers in my community understand is the cost of sending their kids to college. I don’t know if I changed anyone’s mind but I did get their attention.

About Joe the Plumber – the fact that this guy lied about his credentials and it was discovered that not only wasn’t he licensed but he hasn’t paid taxes and owes back unpaid taxes, you’d think that they would try and lose him instead of practically adding him to the ticket. I also think that the guy most likely has nothing between the ears. But then I got thinking – Abuse of Power, under further investigation, Housegate, Travelgate (income never declared, taxes owed), illegal gift in the form of expensive clothes, absolutely nothing between the ears…. obviously, they don’t care! He is just another plastic doll!

I am also hoping that the Campaign people who called her diva, whack job and rigue ARE outed and lambasted and shamed. Then maybe they will say, hey what’ve I got to lose? and they’ll spill ALL the dirt to the public!!! Only 7 days guys, hurry it up!

From Joe the Uniplumber on the abcblog:

“Wurzelbacher also said, ‘I love America. I hope it remains a democracy, not a Socialist society. … If you look at spreading the wealth, that’s honestly right out of Karl Marx’s mouth.’”

The next time someone tells you that Obama is a socialist, here’s what you ask them. “You consider someone who wants to “share the wealth” by having the people who can most afford it pay higher taxes than those who can least afford it. So, what do you call someone who wants to “share the wealth” by having the people who can least afford it pay higher taxes than those who can most afford it?”

Why is it Socialist to tax the rich more than the poor and it’s not Socialist to tax the poor more than the rich (proportionate to income).

Last week I was talking to our CFO, who is voting for McCain and has said he “has to like Palin” (IOW, he doesn’t approve of her but he has to accept her). His words to me were “I’ve worked hard for my money and I don’t want it given to anybody else.”

That statement, along with the statements another acquaintance has made to me that she is going to lose her house and end up in the women’s shelter under Obama, leads me to believe that many repubs are totally selfish and in life for themselves (and their families) only and anyone else be damned.

“Sue Katz looks beyond the lipstick and the sound bites to unravel the real Sarah Palin. In this extract from her new book, Thanks But No Thanks: The Voter’s Guide to Sarah Palin, she examines the critical response from Alaskan women to the next possible US vice-president:

A couple of women were sitting around in Anchorage, depressed by the widespread impression in the United States and around the world that Sarah Palin was thoroughly supported by Alaskans, especially women. These particular women not only objected to Palin’s political views, they didn’t like the way the image of Alaskan women was being turned into a caricature.”

Crazy Stuff

What do you think about my Theory?
——————————————————————-

Yesterday evening I had a convo with a very dear friend of mine who is a school teacher. She said she was voting for Obama but race aside, was concerned because trending stats were beginning to show that white Americans in the near future would be a minority race and she had a fear of her grandchildren or great grandchildren being discriminated against racially. At first I didn’t know what to say and haven’t seen those statistical studies so I said, “Well, you know how our kids always tried to get college scholarships and grants and they couldn’t because we made too much money and were not a minority? If whites become a minority then one of those obstacles will have been removed.” She looked at me for a moment and exclaimed, “Damn! I never thought about it that way! Perhaps I should start sponsoring some immigrants so it will happen quicker! Maddie’s five years old!” I had to laugh. But those fears are real. We’ve had it pretty good over the years being Caucasians. Top of the food chain, so to speak, and it’s going to take a bit of getting used to for some people. There are ingrained fears on all sides. I took a college course not long ago dissecting cultural differences. One gorgeous intelligent well-spoken black woman told the class that her grandmother had told her when she was young that white people smelled “like wet dogs”. She says that even today the first thing she does when meeting new people is to smell them. She says she doesn’t mean to do it, it’s just a response. I asked on the way out to the parking lot after class if she thought that white people do smell like wet dogs and she told that to be perfectly honest, some do but that probably had more to do with what pet they owned rather than race. We stood for awhile talking after class and she confessed she was a Baptist but had a brother who was a Muslim. She said she feared for him because of people’s ignorance of what it really means to be Muslim. I agreed. There are extremists in every religion not just those of the Muslim faith. I truly believe that if it appeared to anyone that religion was truly interfering with the function of the US government that the people would rise up and reclaim it. Fundamentalists are not for the people nor by the people as they do not represent everyone. Calm down. Believe it or not, we Americans are ALL in this together.

The one word that describes all of them is… FRAUD!

I think it’s a very telling of how little the McCain campaign really values the intelligence of it’s perceived constituency. I would be insulted if I were a Republican that my candidate is so arrogantly dismissive of my intelligence that they put forth a narrative that is just a bunch of BS and easily debunked lies.

Ok, new political article up on Yahoo that says “McCain links economy and national security.” After reading the article, I was laughing. Why? Because of the last line of the article that said, “The next president won’t have time to get used to the office,” he argues. “I’ve been tested. Sen. Obama hasn’t.”

So, his military experience is graduating near the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy, wrecking 4 planes, getting shot down in Vietnam and spending 5 1/2 years as a POW. What part of that says LEADER? He was a bad student and a horrendous pilot. So horrendous a pilot that he was shot down. Now I don’t mean to belittle his service or to make light of his days as a POW but that doesn’t make his military experience a shining example of his leadership ability. Sorry, Senator McCain, this doesn’t pass the smell test with me.

Personally I want a President who understands that wars are never ‘won’ and therefore need to avoided except as the very, very, very last option. Even if a country is deluded into thinking they ‘won’ a war that just means they left behind a country completely ravaged, land and infrstructure destroyed, millions of families devasted, and innocent adults and children killed and/or left homeless.

I would oppose McCain solely based on his myoptic obsession with ‘winning’ wars.

Speaking of winning wars, I’ve never quite figured out why the McCain Campaign and Rethugs in general are so against the idea of using American tax dollars to do things for the American people as it seems they certainly don’t seem to mind using American tax dollars to do things for the people of Iraq while the Iraqi government sits on billions if not trillions of oil dollars.

Just listened to McCain’s speech. The MSM should print his speech out and address each point. These wasn’t much talk about how to address the issues but there were a lot of attacks on Obama that would be hard to disprove. IE: Obama wants to stiffle growth. That’s hard to prove or disprove as arguments could be made for both sides of the argument. The thing that struck me the most is that, at the end of his speech, he used the word fight over and over; at least fifteen times. Each time he mouthed the word he was elevating his voice and putting more emphasis on the word fight. This is rabble rousing in the extreme and is very dangerous when speaking to a crowd. A mob mentality is much different and can easily get out of hand. This kind of campaigning can have tragic consequences when the McCain camp loses.

“Dear Red States…” A Letter From The Blue!

Dear Red States…
We’ve decided we’re leaving. We intend to form our own country, and
we’re taking the other Blue States with us.
In case you aren’t aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon,Washington,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We
believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially
to the people of the new country of New California.
To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get Elliot
Spitzer. You get Ken Lay.
We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole’ Miss.
We get 85 percent of America’s venture capital and entrepreneurs. You
get Alabama.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states
pay their fair share.
Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the
Christian Coalition’s, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a
bunch of single moms.
Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and
anti-war, and we’re going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at
once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have
kids they’re apparently willing to send to their deaths for no
purpose, and they don’t care if you don’t show pictures of their
children’s caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, and
hope that the WMDs turn up, but we’re not willing to spend our
resources in Bush’s Quagmire.
With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent
of the country’s fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple
and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation’s fresh fruit, 95 percent of
America’s quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners)
90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most
of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and
condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale,
Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.
With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88
percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care
costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the
tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern
Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh,
Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.
We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.
Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was
actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred
unless we’re discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say
that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved
in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy b*****ds believe you are people
with higher morals then we lefties.
By the way, we’re taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt
weed they grow in Mexico.

Peace out,
Blue States

After reading about McCain’s radio interviews today, I really wish McCain would get a grip on reality.

Went to Michele Obama’s rally at Centennial Hall in Colorado Springs yesterday. I live in the downtown area, beautiful old Victorian homes, many parks, and just 5 minutes away by car.

Started out at 4:00 PM (scheduled for 4:30) Walked with a friend, stopped for my free Taco and a Pepsi at Taco Bell (someone hit a home run in the series and that was their promo), and continued a few blocks to the Hall. First time ever at one of these events.

Boy! A LOT of people. The line stretched across the street from the Hall and around the block (4 of ’em) back to the beginning and then across to the other steeet. The Hall holds 2500.

Got in line and at about 5:00 PM found myself just about to enter the Hall when they reached capacity and the overflow went to a parking lot where they had set up mics. Around 5:30 PM Michele came out to shake hands with the overflow group and say a few words before entering the Hall for her speech.

What did this say to me? Many good things about the organizational efforts and the volunteering efforts. The differences, that are FUNDAMENTAL between these two campaigns, spoke volumes.

There were the usual protesters, in small numbers, and about 4 McCain supporters. (Oh, so sad) There was a wonderful feeling of camaraderie, so many different people. Growing up and living in Hollywood, CA I would not have made this comment, it’s a given that there is a mix there. Here in beautiful CO the mix is not so prevalent.

The volunteers were up and down the line soliciting help and I am waiting for them to call me, said I would help with phones to Obama supporters getting the vote out in these last few days.

Also, putting the good white light out and over Barrack.

VTJen,
I’m glad to hear about your Church being supportive of Obama because as a Catholic myself, it has baffled me as to how a lot of Catholics seem very supportive of McCain/Palin. Obviously, the abortion issue seems to be the only factor for most. I recently read an article stating as much when the head of Scranton’s diocese said something along the lines that it doesn’t matter if you’re right on healthcare, the ecomony, education, immigration, etc. – all that is null if you disregard the value of human life.

Of course there is no mention of all the deaths due to war.

I don’t attend Mass all that often but I happened to go one time during our last presidential election and had to listen to the priest tell all those in attendance that they must vote only for Pro-Life candidates. I was outraged so it is encouraging to hear more Churches looking beyond the abortion issue. There’s a lot more at stake here.

Here is the article I referenced. Quite a frustrating read.

I’m having trouble getting through all these posts, since I’m at work, (just a quick break!)

Jamie:

Keep working on your Mom! I honestly believe that a lot of people have already changed their minds, and many more will. Of course, there will be those who will never admit how wrong they are about Barack Obama.

Anyway, my Mom is a democrat. She’s 76 and she’s always been a democrat, she’s voting for Obama. But, she’s honestly seen and heard very little from him. When I told her last night that he’ll be on tv, she declined to watch, saying that she doesn’t want to listen to any politician. (Campaign ad overload?)

I didn’t argue with her, since I am believing that she’ll have plenty of opportunities to hear him in the next 8 years, but I did tell her that she will enjoy hearing him speak when she does get around to listening.

Of course, I don’t have to try and convince her to vote for him, since she already is. Trying to change her mind would not be an easy thing to do…

I think the repugs have the “chicken little mentality” THE SKY IS Falling! Part in respect to the buzzwords the repugs been throwing around, dangerous, socialist, and because of their extreme fundy right wing, whack-jobbiness, religious BS ie “Rapture” “End times” and the fact that this is Historical, a Black (half white) man leading the country out of the abyss! Their small minds cannot grasp “change” so they run and scream the “sky is falling”
I think many of them are going to feel very folish come Nov. 5 when the sky doesn’t fall. And I am also hoping something major will surface about Grifter Bible spice, and McLame. And also as another Mudpuppy said above, the ones that are not such whack jobs, are outright “greedy” and only out for themselves. If anyone has seen the movie “Sicko” Micheal Moore asked many people in EU/FR who were making more $ if they minded paying more taxes(for the universal health care) and all of them felt obliged even happy to help their fellow man! Such a change from the greedy idiots here…”I’ve worked hard for what I have and don’t want to share it…”
Very un-evolved mentally/emotionally,spiritually.
These are the people that stand around and watch as someone is beat up or killed…and do nothing…:(
I am so glad not all of the people of the US like this… only a small percent.😦

I enjoyed your report from Michelle Obama’s rally. The support at these rallies has been incredible, and I would think that these huge numbers are probably unprecedented.

Not surprising, when, as you said, there is such a wonderful feeling of camaraderie among such a varied group of people.

Not unlike a certain political blog that I could name! Yay Mudflats!

OT I know, but, I just finished listening to yet another re-run rally speech by McCrazee, that is it, i have had it, all I hear from him is fight, fight, fight, well here it is. I am a 61 y/o white male, lots of health problems, but, I hereby challenge McCrazee to a three round boxing match, he can choose the location for this event, I just want to be sure we use 8 oz. gloves. As long as my wife (tired mom Va), keeps feeding me that delicious pie, he does not have a chance.
I’ll show him “Maverick”, upside his head, Ohhhhhhh, he gets my shorts is such a wad, I guess he and the She-Bush think if they tell a lie enough times it will turn into the truth. Thank you so much for being here, and putting their lies in print for all to see…….and allowing old geezers like me to vent their frustrations.
Bring it on McCrazee, and the She-Bush can be your corner person to boot.

Hi all

I think we’re in trouble. This election could go to the Repugs. Stranger things have happen because I just heard SP say something I agree with!!!

I don’t know where she is today, but CNN showed a little clip of her saying “that just because gas prices are down, we still need to get off our dependence of foreign oil”.

That’s something we should have done 35 years ago after the 1973 oil embargo like Brazil did.

She actually said something that makes sense. I never thought that would ever happen. Never say never!

Take care

What do you think the chances are of the 2nd ethics investigation’s finding being released Friday? I ask, because in general late-Friday’s seem to be the hour of choice to release [expletive]-bombs. (see ref firings in Office Space)
