Bed Time in Alaska – Open Thread & Mudflats Chat Tomorrow!

28 10 2008

Wow.  What a day in Alaskan history it was!  Ted Stevens convicted on seven felony counts.

To commemorate this event, tomorrow, Tuesday, October 28,  Alaskans for Ethics in Government are having a press conference at noon on the Capitol steps in Juneau.   All are all invited.  Pete Ford, Kim Metcalfe and Phil Smith have agreed to be the lead speakers.  Jesse Kiehl is kicking off the press conference.  There will be simultaneous press conferences in Anchorage and Fairbanks.  Not sure of the location of those.  If anyone has details, please post them in the comments!

There’s also an official Mudflats event happening tomorrow (Tuesday the 28th) over in the Mudflats Forum! We’ll be holding a scheduled chat in the Forum chatroom from 1:30pm – 2:30pm Alaska time (5:30-7:30 eastern, 2:30-4:30 pacific) so I can say hello to you all in real time, and answer any Alaska questions you may have, about politics or Brian the moose, or how cold it is, or whatever!  To get to the chat room, click on the sidebar where it says “Mudflats Forum & Chat.”  Then, look in the upper right hand corner of the screen and you’ll see the chat room link.  For those of you unable to attend, we’ll try to schedule another one that’s at a more West Coast friendly time!

Good night, Mudflatters!

PLEASE PLEASE Mudpuppies consider signing and adding your honest and articulate comments to the link in my above post, courtesy of testerm. Sorry for being off topic once again. But I am very pissed about the card dealt to Senator Biden by this right-wing plant of a “reporter”. At a time when we are going through serious crisis in many areas, these a-holes want to continue their racist “socialist” agenda.
So here’s the link to tell the TV station just how you feel about this outrageous conflict of interest.

http://www.wftv.com/contact/index.html

Jamie Floridian in France gave some cool talking points: Thanks for the link – I just sent in my message : I used words like unprofessional, slanted, biassed, right-wing republican agenda and made the point of refering to Joe Biden as educated, knowledgeable, respected. I did see a clip of the interview – this is the news station my mom gets and I watch when I am visiting her – and it was embarrassing in its “questions”. I would love for someone at the station to actually answer my e-mail. I wonder what they would say.

Please consider adding your comments, or pass on this link and the link in my first post.

As you can see, I did indeed go to the link Sparky gave a voiced my opinion. I clicked on maybe 4 “send message” tos, I just clicked on whatever seemed important – the WFTV ones and managers and promoters. Whatever, the more the merrier. Third Party Absentee Ballot Applications

A growing source of absentee voting fraud complaints have been over absentee ballot applications being distributed by third party organizations such as Presidential Campaigns, political parties, etc. During the 2008 elections, there has been increased complaints against both Presidential Campaigns over the legitmacy of absentee ballot applications being distributed by third party organizations. The Heritage Foundation and the National Campaign for Fair Elections argue that state laws should allow only voters, their immediate family members, or their caregivers to deliver absentee ballots either to the post office or directly to election officials[9].

28 10 2008
Jamie, Floridian in France

@Sparky
Not possible to go overboard on something like that. That’s what citizens like us are for! Would we have done the same if the situation were reversed (Democratically slanted newscaster interviewing Palin?) No, but wouldn’t they just! But what was shocking wasn’t the “hardness” of the questions – like someone asking Palin about the Abuse of Power thing or McCain about the racist hue to his speeches – and maybe it wasn’t even so much the Repug slant, rather it was the totally twisted and distorted ideas behind the questions – tieing Obama to phony voting schemes, “crushing political blunder”, equating Obama to Karl Marx; everything she said and insinuated by her tone and body language was a smear and an attempt to sway the viewer. That is what was despicable and that is what we have to let them know.

Found this at Wikipedia (Ages of U S Senators)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_current_United_States_Senators_by_age

Begs the question: Do you think it is time to impose term limits and/or age limits on members of Congress ?

As a person ages, his mental and physical faculties begin to fade, that is a proven fact. And while most of these senators seem, for the most part, to still be ‘with it’, one has to question the logic behind allowing senators to serve forever.

There are 26 senators at age 70 or better, WHY are they still serving at their advanced ages ?

Do they need the money ?
No, they are all millionaires.

Is it the ‘power’ thing ?
Probably

There are mandatory retirement ages in the public sector, usually age 70; why not in Congress ?

Sparky: I saw that abomination the other day, and wrote a long e-mail and posted some comments on the WFTC station. I asked why Barbara what’s-her-name was so anti-American to imply that our country would be ruined by a Democratic President?

I also wrote that she had wasted her four minutes with Joe Biden, the next Veep of the U.S., and that someday she might regret it because she’ll never get a chance to interview him again.

I also asked her what she has against Sweden, and doesn’t she think that most Americans would love to have their healthcare system. After all, England and Canada also have socialized healthcare – are they Marxist countries?

I saw her on Larry King and also Fox News yesterday, and she just makes excuses for herself. I’m not sure whether WTF-TV has the guts to fire her for what she did, or if they care at all. But I hope they get e-mails from now until the Inauguration.

My concern with petitions and feedback of this sort is that deliberately provocative programs like this one already know they’re outrageous, it’s part of their editorial policy. WFTV also knows that Barbara West’s husband is Republican media consultant and they know they are satisfying their audience. Protests by outsiders mean nothing except they can count them as indicators of the “hard hitting” nature of their questions. Yes these idiots are actually describing this drivel as a hard hitting interview. [WFTV news director Bob Jordan refuted the bias by saying, “Mr. Biden didn’t like the questions,” Jordan said. “We choose not to ask softball questions.” http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/25/biden-slammed-during-flor_n_137830.html%5D They can actually use public reactions to validate their impact and ramp up advertising from the faithful who already support them.

AKM, thanks for a great piece about Stevens’ verdict!

Palin said: “Interesting. So it’s the corrupting influence of big oil, not the corrupt compliance of politicians. Subtle distinction. It wasn’t Ted’s fault…it was those darn kids he was hanging around with that got him into trouble.”

Is she setting the stage for her own corruption conviction when Housegate gets prosecuted?

“In a nutshell, Sarah Palin said absolutely nothing with any substance. How very…..Sarah Palin.” Great line, AKM!

Lastly, I don’t know why you are so outraged that the Alaska GOP would ask people to vote for a convicted felon. You should know by now that Republicans only comply with legal system mandates with which they agree.

You know, say it wasn’t a jury of peers. (I love this one – maybe the jurors weren’t REAL Americans, or they were Anti-American).

If you don’t like the verdict, ignore it. (”No hint of any unethical behavior…”)

If you don’t want to honor a subpoena because you would be expected to tell the truth about an important Republican official, ignore it.

And, Palin asks Alaskans to join her “in respecting the workings of the judicial system.” Hmmm…she has strange ways of showing respect.

A group of FFA students from my WA school attended their national convention in Indianapolis last week. I got a call that Thursday morning in my classroom from three FFA girls who wanted me to know they were standing in line for the Obama rally!! I wanted to cry at their excitement. They took lots of pictures and brought me back a pin and young man brought me back a tee shirt. One of his photographs is now my screen saver. Each of those students said it was one of the most powerful things they had witnessed- especially when he acknowledged all the FFA blue jackets in the crowd.

The three girls were also some of the ones that attended our school’s “debate parties” where we watched the debates together and ate junk food. None of them can vote yet, but they are SO ready to take on the future. Just to attend a rally of that size in a “battle ground state” is exciting, and I would have wanted them to have that experience regardless of the candidate. This election will have its own chapter in their children’s history books- not just a paragraph or two. They now feel even more part of it. BUT, the fact they got to hear in person the next president of the United States…priceless.

BTW- Although most at my school know how I feel about Obama, I have to be very careful in what I say, though both the widget map and the “Obama Sign Cam” were part of a lesson plan on diffusion and time-space compression. The experience these students had really got to me, and all you on Mudflats would be the “few” who could imagine how much it meant to me.
You all are great!

Did anyone else get an email from Let Freedom Ring, Inc. ? It references Biden saying the next President will be tested by our enemies and includes numerous links to videos designed to raise terror about Obama.

Snippets of email text:

“What does that mean for you and me? That we will be targeted by terrorists if our fellow countrymen make the mistake of electing Barack Obama?

Barack Obama wants to weaken, NO, gut our military defenses, and has said that Iran and Venezuela are just tiny countries, so why are we worried about them? Obama, with passion in his voice, said he will cut investments in our defense systems.

With Senator Obama calling the shots from the Oval Office for four years, I can only imagine the level of appeasement and capitulation that will be granted to our enemies. Please help us stop an Obama Presidency…as we take a stand in order to inform millions of voters in the battleground states of Colorado, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.”

….and so on and so forth.

As voters in each state, our assignment is to vet and revet our elected officials. One thing this election has done, is to make many of us more aware of what these people do and the consequences. There are mudflatters from MN who’ve posted about Bachmann, that she’s always said nutty things. So, voters need to more carefully weigh the pros and cons. Citizens must be willing to vote people out who no longer meet standards or tend to exploit power. Politicians as a group, should stop looking the other way and take responsibility. Also, political parties should develop (honest and ethical) mentoring programs for politicians who are working their way up.

It all comes back to us as informed and active voters.

Mon Dieu! I take off for a few days and Alaska experiences another Mt Redoubt volcanic blow.

Regarding aged senators, I’ve often wondered how to justify a Strom Thurmond. Did he hang on just so he could claim the title of longest serving? Surely he lost his effectiveness long before his death at age 100.

Why did Alaskans vote to keep Uncle Ted around for so many terms? He provided. Everyone knows Alaska ranks 1st in per capita earmarks, due in large measure to the influence of a senator who knew his way around Washington.
A small state like Alaska could never be heard without a person of seniority to speak for them.
But does that make it the right way to govern?

Maybe it’s time to look at this issue.
The Constitution is dragged out as a reverent touchstone – the quintessential element.
But even Thomas Jefferson wanted the Constitution to be rethought every generation; that his generation was not the only capable one.

Here’s a good site to keep your eyes on…the same people who filed against Grifter spice and the clothes, CREW
http://www.citizensforethics.org/press/releases
They are saying Teddy boy should step down imediately!
Melanie Sloan, former federal prosecutor and executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, released the following statement:

“The jury has come to the right conclusion today. Evidence clearly showed that Sen. Stevens had failed to disclose a large number of gifts. Given his conviction for making false statements, the best thing for the people of Alaska is for Sen. Stevens to resign immediately.

Other members of Congress should watch Sen. Stevens’ fall and take heed. For example, an investigation should be spearheaded into Sen. McCain’s failure to disclose his gambling winnings on his financial disclosure forms.

Even while the House and Senate Ethics Committee continue to turn a bind eye to corruption, the Justice Department does not.”
I think he should, the problem is…who would replace him?

@ eajphd Molten Contra Palin (05:09:07) :

Why does liberty get brought up so often in legal actions designed to suppress inquiries into misconduct by right wingers or in the justification of so many other infringements on truth and justice? Why is it always linked to fear rather than to potentials for life and the pursuit of happiness?

********************************************

This is a huge philosophical and pragmatic issue that’s more than I can start to think about this early–though I will think about, maybe for the rest of my life.

Fear, I think, can fairly be described as a “wired-in” emotion, inasmuch as we need it for survival. For that reason it is very easy to manipulate people through fear, a fact the cynical and amoral have exploited throughout history.

It’s amazing to what extent we have allowed the liberties afforded by the Constitution to be subverted because of fear of terrorism. I have no idea where I’m going with this, but you have brought up something that, IMHO we need to struggle with.

To eajphd Molten Contra Palin (05:01:23) :
FFA used to stand for Future Farmers of America. A few years ago they officially dropped the full words to reflect their shift to more than just farming. They are now involved also in business, scientific research, community service and job skills, among a lot of other things. They are fiercely proud of those jackets and their role in all aspects of food supply.

That being said, yes, it is a conservative group. Two of the students are from pretty strong Republican families, I think. And yes, the area where I live in SW Washington still has Ron Paul signs up everywhere and our local paper might as well print in red ink. Like the whole “real” VA argument, though, our area is changing and it scares some people. I try not to back anyone into a corner over any type of McCain support. I also have a few Rep women I can name that would have been better than Sarah Palin. I tell them that I miss McCain 2000. We agree on our views of Colin Powell. Once he endorsed Obama, I don’t need to say much more🙂

Both CNN and the local news fail to mention that Obama/Biden drew more than 4 times the supporters to their rain soaked rally earlier this year in Fredericksburg. 26,000 came to hear them in Fredericksburg. It was pouring and I have a special needs child so we skipped both rallies. But I was ashamed to see that our local news RAG the Free Lance Star took up the whole front page today for Sarah and the whole back page. Yet if you follow the #s of letters to the editor – there are more pro-obama letters than pro-mccain. The city of Fredericksburg is definitley more pro-obama going by the signs in the yards, and Stafford county to the north of the city is turning more pro-obama every day with its signs. I think the repubs are in denial.

What about great politicians like Ted Kennedy? The Senate is built on seniority which is good and bad. Every voter has a choice and I thought we weren’t age-biased. There are a lot of reasons why the parties aren’t willing to cede seniority because senator turns 70.
—-

Besides, they say 70 is the new 50! If there’s an age cap, it would have to be higher than seventy. I’m still about 15 years away from that venerable achievement, but I have siblings and many close friends in their 70s and beyond who can still (physically and mentally) run circles around many overweight, intellectually uncurious, complacent and self-satisfied younger folk. Someone above said that these public officials’ constituents know best on these matters—whether or not age is a factor. They are probably right. Just my two cents.

Also, very disturbing article:

GOP draws battlelines around Sarah Palin.

Apparently you are either for Palin or you are Republican-non-gratis. Personally I thinkthat is political suicides. There aren’t enough crazy right-wing zeocons to swing an election. The repubs need their moderate base to even have a chance. They also need the Independents as their just aren’t enough of them even at full-strength.

Personally I don’t relish having Palin around after next Tuesday. But it will be interesting to watch the Republican party implode as battlelines get drawn. I don’t think Sarah knows what she is in for. Barack Obama did nothing to smear her – nothing! The Republicans taking her on won’t be so kind.

I think that issue should be raised. The Senate was originally conceived as a counter to the more populist House, if you will, where there are more Members and more turnover. So on the one hand, it’s great to have experience and wisdom in both the Senate and the Supreme Court.

However I think folks do overstay their welcome, and constituents tend to keep them in office because power does consolidate around individuals who have been there for a long time. Also, some people are very capable later in life, although certainly this is not always the case. And people are living longer.

I had no idea that many Senators were over 70. Thanks for the research and I would think the Senate organizers should look at this question. I also wonder how people would legislate differently if they knew they had to leave by age 60, for example.

And to those who are mentioning it, I haven’t seen anything new on Cajun Boy’s blog, in fact he says stop asking.

I just early voted in tiny Flagler county, Florida. From the time I arrived to the time I put my ballot in the machine was about twenty minutes. I’d estimate about 20 people in line ahead of me when I arrived. They had maybe twelve voting booths.

Since I moved here in 2002 we’ve always had paper bubble-in ballots which get fed into a scantron type machine. It seems pretty efficient. I hesitated before deciding to vote early for several reasons (tradition, kids wanted to go, I know my pollworkers, etc.) but ultimately decided to vote early because the Obama campaign has asked us to do so.

Lawsuits Claim Voter Intimidation

ALCU and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund filed suit on behalf of two voters saying the incident was an effort to intimidate voters – a violation of the federal Voting Rights Act. The ALCU’s suit says state Rep. Justine Fox-Young, R-Albuquerque, and others violated the privacy rights of voters, which could intimidate people into not voting.

“An investigator who said he worked for a prominent GOP attorney visited the home of a local voter accused her of not being a citizen and threatened to call immigration authorities, according to a federal lawsuit filed Monday.

The investigator laughed, the suit says, when Dora Escobedo said she had documents proving she had recently become a citizen.”

” The crucial swing state of Colorado is the latest state in which some voters might not be able to cast a ballot because of a technical mistake they made when registering to vote. Colorado’s Secretary of State Mike Coffman, the state’s top election official and a Republican, has deemed over 6,000 voter registration forms incomplete. Steve Fenburg of New Era Colorado estimates that there may be as many as 10,000.”

Hi all I have a question for you. When was the last time Sarah Palin actually killed a moose? I’m thinking it was 20-30 years ago.

I was reading some letter in the NY Times about some guy in Sherman Texas that was voting for McCain because “he likes the fact that SP hunts moose”

and I am like puke! she has not been sitting her aass in the snow waiting to kill a moose. and she is not field dressing that thing herself and neither is she loading it onto the ATV.

any inside scoop?

Off-topic topic: WFTV interview
Would love to join the forum today but cannot. So, I’ll add my comment on the Biden interview. The interviewer Barbara West, on Larry King, indicated that she had a very few minutes to ask several questions. She decided what was the priority question and I thought Biden answered appropriately: Is this a joke? Interviewers essentially have control of the time and questions but interviewees have even less opportunity to set the record straight. It’s like doing the mambo when rocknroll is playing! Joe just caught the music. Good job.

also I would like to confirm my understanding of “Sarah Baracuda”

That’s what they called her in the locker room, not what they called her “on the basketball court”.

(saying that she was a nasty infighter for favours and minutes and not so great on the court)

or was she also good for a nasty foul on the court, that would make sense.

According to Sarah Palin’s basketball coach in Wasilla, nobody ever called her Barracuda that he knew of. Her teammates did not call her that, her coaches did not call her that. So, it was other teams that called her that (and if you understood how small teams are, to this day, in the small towns of AK, you would understand that it’s unlikely that he’d not have heard of it), or, more likely, it’s part of her story about herself that she’s made up. Like saying no to the bridge to nowhere, selling the plane on ebay, etc etc.

From the November 3, 2008 NEW YORKER

A few weeks before she was nominated for Vice-President, she told a visiting journalist—Philip Gourevitch, of this magazine—that “we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.” Perhaps there is some meaningful distinction between spreading the wealth and sharing it (“collectively,” no less), but finding it would require the analytic skills of Karl the Marxist. ♦

Kevin from NYC — there is a photo floating around that has Bible Spice with a dead animal and one of the girls at her side. Looked like it was Willow or Bristol when they were about Piper’s age. Don’t know if she shot it or if someone else did, but that would have been over 10 years ago, I guess.

My experience with moose hunting is this: you apply for a tag (permit), and there is a drawing, some years you get the tag and get to shoot something, some years not. The chances that you will get the tag are so small that everyone in the family applies in the hope of getting one, whether or not they are all willing to actually shoot it. That is part of the reason why her persecution of Wooten (Troopergate) is so ridiculous — there are very very few families in Alaska where every member hunts, but plenty of families where everybody applies for the tag!

Now, if there is an Alaskan who knows about an area in Alaska where you can just wander around & shoot something if it shows up in front of you, you can correct me! It’s possible that in the past some areas have needed culling and that has happened, but I am under the impression that all of the moose/sheep/etc killed are done so by getting a tag (permit) via lottery. I’ve gone sheep, moose & caribou hunting in Alaska, so do know a tiny bit about it — never shot anything and never would, that was the ex’s thing.

Gov Bill Richardson, the only Latino Governor in the nation, has been stumping strong for Obama in swing states with significant Latino populations of voters including his home state of New Mexico as well as Nevada, Colorado and Florida. Given Richardson’s super-strong credentials (State Governor, US Congressman, Ambassador to the UN, Energy Secretary) and his tireless work to help swing the four states above toward Obama, I have to believe Richardson is a front-runner for Secretary of State in an Obama administration.

So, sure, there is still 10-20% of the US population who would vote for her. I have no doubt. I have seen the film clips from the campaign trail, and as the news media has begun to euphemistically say, “it’s the low information voter.”

After seeing the WFTV General manager after seeing the clip Barbara West did with Biden. I expressed my concern over the “Fox News” type of approach. Below is their response. I responded back but doubt I’ll hear from them again. I encourage everyone to email WFTV’s General Manager.

Dear Viewer:

Thank you for taking time to contact us regarding Barbara West’s recent interview with democratic Vice Presidential candidate Senator Joe Biden.

The Obama campaign contacted us last week offering Senator Biden, via satellite, for a short interview. Barbara West, one of our most experienced anchors, was asked to interview Senator Biden, just as she had been on previous occasions.

It is our goal at Eyewitness News when interviewing any political candidate or public official to ask them a direct question about an issue currently in the public debate. Last week, when much of the political discourse centered on Senator Obama’s statement to ‘Joe the Plumber’ that he thought ‘sharing the wealth’ was a good idea, Barbara decided to ask Senator Biden just how far an Obama-Biden administration would go in ‘sharing the wealth’. What followed was very pointed, provocative question. We allowed Senator Biden to answer, fully unedited.

We tell our reporters and news anchors to ask the questions that one of our viewers might ask. For example, when Senator Obama visited Lakeland recently, Barbara (knowing her time with a presidential candidate would be limited) asked Senator Obama two questions: first, about drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico; and, second, about his position on the space program. The Senator’s answers dominated the news cycle for the next day.

You can see all of Barbara’s interviews with political candidates at WFTV.com including one she just did Monday with Senator John McCain.

Perhaps more than any other presidential election in recent memory, this current election has stirred passions – some of them quite partisan – in many people. Through it all, we believe our mission is to address vital issues that we will face together, regardless of our own personal views with thorough, even handed reporting.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Congressmen won’t leave because all the best perks are based on seniority and longevity. And it’s really, really hard to ever beat an incumbent; the deck is just SO stacked in their favor. But leaving the old farts in there until they are in their 90s also stagnates the process for the younger prospects and a LOT of the oldest guys (can you say “Strom Thurmond”?) are just hanging around to set records. How about a 24-year lifetime limit for everyone? 4 Senate terms or 12 in the House or combination of both. (it’s 3 times as long as the President gets) That’s an entire career, it’s a LOT of money, plenty of time to get things done and set yourself up for life, and it will encourage the new talent to get experienced and plan for their own futures, which should help both parties to actually groom some folks for the actual work.

How Racism Works

What if John McCain were a former president of the Harvard Law Review?
What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating
class?

What if McCain were still married to the first woman he said “I do” to?
What if Obama were the candidate who left his first wife after she no
longer measured up to his standards?

What if Michelle Obama were a wife who not only became addicted to pain
killers, but acquired them illegally through her charitable
organization?
What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?
What if Obama were a member of the Keating-5*?

* The Keating Five were five United States Senators
accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as
part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early
1990s.

What if McCain were a charismatic, eloquent speaker?

If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election
numbers would be as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes
positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in
another when there is a color difference.

PS : What if Barack Obama had an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter….

Lulu – about the quote re: VA voters for Sarah. That was here in Fredericksburg. Yep, my experience in talking to folks around here is that the ones who are for her are blind fundies. When I start to tell them about her record in Alaska (she didn’t cut taxes, she hasn’t helped the Special needs pop., govt grew in wasilla & the state, kids travel paid for by tax payers, etc. They glaze over. I actaully had one mom at swim team upon seeing me reading “The Audacity of Hope” say “oh, you’re one of them.” I didn’t have the audacity to ask, “Just what in the he** does THAT mean?” (Dammit!)

As a prior resident of the great state of Alaska I feel it is my sworn duty to educate everyone who I see & have 5 minutes of time or more to chat about the truth re: SP. On that note: anyone have a good answer to the question from my hairdresser. She’s still on the fence. She has a client who thinks her contractor hubbie in Iraq and lots like him will be out of a job on 11/5 (or 1/20/09) if Obama gets elected. Then hairdresser talks to me. As a small businesss owner she is worried about Obama’s healthcare plan, and just a “gut feeling of he makes me nervous”. She doesn’t like the idea of giving to those who don’t work for it. She and her family work very hard for their business. I was kind of stumped on how to go forward and compare the two. Econ was never my best subject (I always fell asleep except when the prof went to the bathroom during a test and forgot to turn the mic off! ROFLOL!!)

I think with educated folks I have made some inroads. But sadly most of the people I know are drinking the kool-aide. It depresses me, but then I’m a stay at home mom, with a special needs child. My circle isn’t as a heterogenous as it used to be when i was in the working world.

It’s amazing to what extent we have allowed the liberties afforded by the Constitution to be subverted because of fear of terrorism. I have no idea where I’m going with this, but you have brought up something that, IMHO we need to struggle with.

Right you are.

Ben Franklin said something like “those who would give up their liberty for security deserve neither” (someone will correct me)

I completely agree.
I will NOT live in fear, nor will I concede my Constitutional liberties! I am an American citizen and dare I say it? I am the DECIDER on these issues! Then again, I have enough faith in myself, my community and the military to believe that it is EXTREMELY UNLIKELY that there will be fighting in the US streets over any issues with foreign powers. Terrorist attacks are another matter, but those aren’t exactly common here, either, and I think we can probably keep it that way without giving up all of our rights to Big Brother.

I’m more afraid of dying because I can’t afford medical care or losing my house and all assets because of losing my job to the economic downturn than of terrorists. I think it’s a lot more likely for most Americans. And I think the solutions to those problems would boost the entire country in ways that make a good outcome for all much more likely.

At least the inevitable implosion of the Republican Party, following the coming putsch of the non-Palin supporters, i.e., any remaining conservative intellectuals, will give us Mudpups something to discuss.😉 How ironic that the new litmus test of Republicanism is whether one supported Caribou Barbie rather than whether one supports the ideals the Lincoln set out!

As a long-time liberal, I still think we need a loyal opposition party — whether that is us when we are out of power, or a center-right party when we’in in. The problem as I see it is that the current incarnation of the Republican Party puts party first, not country first.

Political parties have come and gone in our history. And that’s as it should be. When they stray from their ideals to the point that they no longer serve a useful purpose, they should die. If the Republicans decide that social conservatism is the be all and end all of their identity, they will be forever consigned to be a minority party, driven by fear more than anything else.

There are too many thoughtful moderate and conservative people in this country to remain without the ability to win an election. So I’ll get way out on a limb and predict that we’re witnessing the beginnings of a new political party — one that actually has a chance of becoming viable. It will take time, and there will likely be several false starts. The challenge for us will be to avoid becoming too complacent in the meantime and allowing ourselves to become as drunk on power as they did.

It’s tough talking to those whose minds are made up, but your hairdresser seems talkable. Be simple. Does she want the war to continue and have her husband continue to risk his life, or does she want him home and safe. Has the Repub gov, tax cuts for the rich/big business done any good for her family or her business. Explain that no matter what the Repubs try and say, it’s been proven by independent sources that Obama will help the working/middle classes and small businesses by his tax breaks (by raising the tx rates on the rich to Clinton-era level – tell her that Cindy McCain earns between 4 and 6 million a year and is only in the 26% tax bracket!) Can’t Cindy and people like Donald Trump and Paris Hilton afford to pay more so Barack can help small businesses and her kids’ schools and stuff like that? It isn’t about giving to people who don’t work for it, it is about helping people like her that are working but not quite making it, it’s about giving more to her kid’s school and affordable health insurance and affordable college.

Look on barack’s website and his issues – taxes, equal pay, women’s issues, education, healthcare – and put it to her in personal terms – how they would affect her. And tell her to tune in to the 30 minute Obamathon Wednesday evening – he should answer her questions.

Good luck!

One of the Repub talking points is that 40% of Americans don’t pay taxes. That’s a real sore point when they think that Obama’s going to give these “deadbeats” money back. That may be of concern to your hairdresser.

So here’s the comeback: The reason they don’t pay taxes is because they don’t earn enough to meet the minimum to have to file. Imagine, 4 of 10 adults don’t make enough money to have to file! Granted, some of those are people on Social Security who have no other income. Some are probably unemployed (perhaps chronically) or certainly underemployed. But my argument is that if we paid people a living wage, one that would raise them to the point where they did “qualify” to pay taxes, there would be both more money going into the economy and more money going to the government to help reduce the deficits. And they might even have enough money to be able to get their hair cut or add additional services…😉

Yanno, if you leave the election emotions out of it and just look at these four people (McCain, Palin, Obama, Biden) individually and objectively, you just CAN’T MISS the fact that months of deep digging brings up no dirt on Obama/Biden (hence the McCain camp can only beat a dead and de-proved horse – Ayers – to death over and over and over) while every scratch in the surface has brought up yet another stain on McCain and Palin, respectively, complete with official documentation and video/audio/photographic evidence and – stunningly – supported by THEIR OWN WORDS.

If you forget party affiliation and all that for a few minutes, forget the usual promises about taxes (remember “Read my lips – no more taxes!”), and just look at the proven, documented facts about these four people as individuals in politics and as fellow citizens, what do you see?
It boggles my mind that any adult of even marginal intelligence would prefer to clap his hands over his ears or eyes and holler NyaNyaNya-I-can’t-hear-you so he can keep cheering for the two people who are CAKED in personal and professional dirt.

—–
very well said! and I especially applaud your last sentence. Sadly, I think some of the democratic leadership is already giddy with the thought of all they can do and the power they’ll have to get their way. My hope for a Barack Obama presidency is that he’ll, for instance, say no to all pork, not just repub pork, that he’ll hold bills put forward by a democratic congress to a high standard of accountability and fiscal sensibility, that he won’t shut out house and senate minority voices that are making good points, etc. I’m counting on him to show us that there really is a new way to lead. And if my own dem congress folk don’t toe that new line…they can expect to be held accountable. I think the time for our vigilance is just beginning, mudpuppies. Like AKM said in an earlier post, it’s time to look our elected officials straight in the eye and say be sharp, be honest, be respectful, do the right thing for all Americans, or get out. It’s time to end politics as we know it in Washington…and, obviously, that means democratic as well as republican politics. I think we mudpups will have an important calling from here on out…not just until Nov. 4th.

Anyone wondering why judges need to retire at 70 need only look at the formerly respected jurist in the form of Sandra Schultz Newman.

Twice in the past week, she’s been involved in really stupid crap here in pennsyltucky where she had been a justice at the state’s supreme court.

She’s part of the group that filed a needless lawsuit seeking to enforce existing laws which are already being enforced.

She was one of a handful of signatories to an email send to presumed jewish votes in pennsylvania telling recipients that Obama is the next coming of Hitler. She now claims she never read the final version of that email send out by a McCain staffer.

70 should also be the limit for president. Just look at McCain and Reagan as your prime examples.

Hope you’re surviving the nasty weather at the Obama Widener U rally!

McCain & Palin cancelled their late morning Quarkertown rally because of the rain. They’re reporting that Obama still has a decent sized crowd considering the awful weather.

BRRRRR!!!! Freezing and wet but worth it!!! My son and I drove over to PA and waited in the line– great camaraderie while waiting to get in– kids from Swarthmore College, Chester High School, kids, older folks, folks in wheelchairs, strollers… Got through security and pretty close to the fenced off area– Through the umbrellas we could clearly see the podium where Senator Obama would speak. There were several early speakers including Ed Rendell (PA Gov)– I have to say, the sound system was not up to par so it was difficult to hear– people were chanting for those in front to put their umbrellas down. I have to admit, for a minute I wondered if it was worth the rain and cold to be there. I couldn’t see– I’m not kidding the tallest man in the world was standing square in front of me! But, my son could see– that made it worth it…. I could see Secret Service on the roofs w/ all their equipment (gives me shivers)– so we knew it was almost time for Obama to appear. And appear he did– no umbrella– and almost everyone else put theirs down :> Not only could we see Obama (I shifted to the side and almost under the armpit of Tall Guy) but we could all hear Obama speak. It was a joy to see him in person– an honor really–worth the cold, the wet, the snow on the way home.

Forty Watt– you’re right — not worth going to see McCain/Palin in this weather– but totally worth seeing Barrack Obama!!!

A cup of tea later and a Jersey diner lunch and I’m almost warmed up again!

No appointment is going to happen. We changed the law in 2004 so that in the event of a senate seat vacancy we now have to have a special election (within 60 days I think). So, Sarah can’t appoint herself, which she wouldn’t have been able to do under the old system anyway; she can’t resign and have the Lt. Can someone explain why ‘Spreading the Wealth’ is evil? They say it like Barack wants to kill their grandmothers.

I don’t really get that Socialism is ‘spreading the wealth’. I understood it to be programs provided to citizens through the government. Kind of like Social Security. I always thought the big objection to socialism was too much government control – nothing to do with distributing money (through tax cuts) to citizens.

If McCain was attacking Obama on his proposed Health Care plan or even his proposed tuition credit plans, well hey, that is semi-socialist. But to call giving tax cuts to 95% of Americans spreading the wealth just seems like a stupid argument.

This whole idea that giving tax cuts to the middle class INSTEAD of the top 5% is somehow ‘spreading the wealth’ and that it is evil is just lost on me?

I think it is a very stupid campaign platform for McCain. Just like everything he has done it just doesn’t make sense. Obviously he has code-words that speak to his elite base but he can’t win an election with that talk!

I’m actually really jealous of you Alaskans. California has ridiculously high sales tax and state income tax. I would love some wealth-spread!

I think Obama should start calling McCain’s proposal “cess-pooling the wealth”.

“It is unclear what Palin believes regarding the themes of violence of most the extreme elements of the groups that she has associated with for many years. But if she is going to use guilt by association methods based on activities that occurred decades ago, she has some more recent associations of her own to explain. If she believes her frequents assertions that the US is a “great nation,” then why does she associate with secessionists that try to break it up? If she opposes domestic violence for political ends, how can she be associated with a group with leaders that have embraced `justifiable homicide”? It is disturbing that she declined to condemn the violence and murder against abortion providers in the NBC interview with Brian Williams, even though he asked her twice about that matter.

There is no statewide elected leader, either as governor or U.S. Senator, that has more extreme right wing, violence-prone associations that Sarah Palin. John McCain has asked us to endorse her, but even if the ticket fails this time, he has elevated her to a contending position for the 2012, energizing and empowering the extreme right in the process. No wonder that even some informed elements of the Republican Party are abandoning him.”

You are right! And as several journalists have pointed out, the progressive tax system which we have is actually like spreading the wealth around. And yes, Medicare, Social Security stiff like that is sort of like socialism, but taxing the rich more and giving tax breaks to people and businesses earning less, isn’t socialism, just fair. I think that Obama should explain it better – he has said how the rich are paying proportionally less (the key words), but I think he needs to explain that it isn’t money just to go into worker’s pockets (like Gov Sarah did in AK!) but that it’ll put more money into bettering schools, Pell Grants, roads, etc. But like as has been said, a lot of people listening to McPain in the @ss are not educated enough to think it through or research the points. They believe big words and concepts they don’t really understand – socialism, marxism, terrorist, ACORN. At least that’s what they say when asked–he came back from Michigan or Wisconsin or wherever it was he’d gone to play hockey (and go to HS) after he injured his shoulder and graduated from Wasilla High with his class. I don’t know about the veracity of the vandalism rumors…

I am going to try this one more time. It just behooves me that people will vote against their own finances. When the below reasons would have gotten Obama thrown out of the primaries, if the shoe had been on the other foot!

*******
You are The Boss… which team would you hire?

Harvard – Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude

Biden:

I think there is quite a bit of veracity in terms of the bus vandalism story — we will never know because he was a minor, and those court records are not open to the public. To know the truth we’d have to rely on Palin to be honest & open about the issue, and I think we all know that’s not going to happen.

Newsflash!

Governor Sarah Palin to replace Anna Paquin as the character Rogue in the fourth installment of the X-Men movie franchise!

In X-Men 4: Mavericks Up!, Sarah Palin’s character Rogue reunites with her love interest Iceman now played by Senator John McCain. Failing to recognize that the cure for the mutant gene that Rogue took in X Men 3: The Last Stand is only temporary, Rogue and Iceman engage in Public Displays of Affection (PDA) otherwise prohibited by Rogue’s mutant power. In the first X-Men film, the teenage Rogue ran away from home after her mutant power manifested itself by accidentally draining the life from her boyfriend while she was kissing him.

Undeterred by a new paramilitary arm of mutants subscribing to a puritanical code of public behavior, Rogue and Iceman proceed to hug and kiss in public places. That is until Rogue places a big wet one on Iceman’s lips in front of the Wasilla library at the same time that the mutant cure wears off and her mutant powers return viciously and instantaneously. Iceman is rendered helpless and paralyzed by the deadly kiss. Hundreds of Wasillians gather around the paralyzed body of Iceman as he falls into a coma.

The puritanical arm of mutants led by Magneto now played by Karl Rove organizes an enraged mob of gay ministers that are living a fake heterosexual life in public and a self-realized queer life behind closed doors. Magneto convinces the mixed-up mob that Iceman was killed because God was punishing him for allowing his girlfriend to display affections in public. Magneto persuades his followers that it is their God-ordained mission to restore public order by passing federal legislation banning beauty pageants that is believed to have been the forum that led to the original physical attraction between Rogue and Iceman. It is true that Iceman was a beauty pageant judge at the time Rogue was an Alaskan beauty queen. But, the public record is unclear as to whether Iceman ever saw Rogue in a bathing suit as a contestant.

Nonetheless, Magneto begins a nation-wide email campaign with photos of Rogue in a bathing suit at an Alaskan beauty pageant and Iceman front-and-center as head judge. The federal legislation against PDA makes it all the way to the Supreme Court where it is ruled unconstitutional. The Court rules, “whereas private Christian schools may prohibit PDA on campus, it is not within the power of this court or any other court to restrict kissing in front of public libraries even ones in which the sitting state governor has attempted to ban books.”

Primary Doctor submitted $94.00 Insurance pd. $41.92 My co-pay $10.00

Cardiologist sub. 145.00 Ins. pd. $87.69 co-pay $25.00

Think of the education that these medical professionals have, the liability they have, the stress they work under and the hours they work. Now, the last time I estimated a construction job (7 years ago) we charged $155.00 an hour for skilled Journeymen.

It’s fairly obvious why the insurance companies want to stop aNational Helth Plan.

Big All in Las Vegas asked if there are any Massachusetts mudflatters present. Absolutely! I’m in western Mass, and I’ve noted another poster (Southernbelle) is, too. Being about 100 miles from Boston/Cambridge is like living in another economic and social culture, so I can’t speak to the availability of jobs there. I do know that the cost of living anywhere near Boston is very high, and the cost of housing is *extremely* high.
State government is broke, so the state is planning on cutting jobs pretty heavily. Schools and other public institutions have been struggling for decades with tight limits on property taxes, and at least here in the more rural parts of the state, elementary schools have been closing because of tight municipal budgets. On the plus side, the level of liberalism and intellect here is wonderfully high, and the geography is spectacular.

There seem to be some concerns about what Obama is going to do when he gets into office. I thought this was a very telling answer. (From his rolling Stone Interview)http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/23589412/page/6

What’s going to be the hardest part of his legacy for you to undo?

The budget. We are going to be in a massive hole. Now, if this rescue package is structured properly and the market recovers, it is possible that it doesn’t end up costing us anywhere close to $700 billion — we might even make money on it. That was true with the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation during the New Deal, which refinanced homes to prevent foreclosure. We’re not putting up $700 billion without getting a return. But keep in mind that we did subsidize Bear Stearns, we did subsidize AIG. We’ve already put a lot of money out. We have a half-trillion-dollar deficit.

Even under my Iraq plan, our military is going to have to be reset. National Guards don’t have equipment. The future cost for veterans care will be enormous. So digging ourselves out of the fiscal mess we’re in is going to be a big, big challenge, and it’s going to require some tough decisions that will not always be popular — particularly when there’s going to be a lot of pent-up energy among Democrats. If I win, every member of Congress on the Democratic side, and some on the Republican side, is going to have ideas about pressing needs and worthy programs. Trying to set some very hard, clear priorities is going to be tough.

And this from Andrew Sullivan’s column regarding Barack as the president of the Harvard Law Review
http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/10/beyond-victimol.html

Bradford Berenson, remembering what Obama was like as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review:

I think Barack took 10 times as much grief from those on the left on the Review as from those of us on the right. And the reason was, I think there was an expectation among those editors on the left that he would affirmatively use the modest powers of his position to advance the cause, whatever that was. They thought, you know, finally there’s an African American president of the Harvard Law Review; it’s our turn, and he should aggressively use this position, and his authority and his bully pulpit to advance the political or philosophical causes that we all believe in. And Barack was reluctant to do that.

It’s not that he was out of sympathy with their views, but his first and foremost goal, it always seemed to me, was to put out a first-rate publication. And he was not going to let politics or ideology get in the way of doing that …

This is exactly the guy we need right now! He understands the challenges he faces and he know everyone wants a piece of him, but I think he will do what he does best – bring everyone together to work together…

Grammy aka Commando Coalfire Palin (03:59:24) : NY Dem – Good point on age limits – judges are required to retire at 70 – now think about how many of them would stay forever if they could, as their judgment and faculties fade . . . I think Congress should have a mandatory age limit.

My apologies if someone has already said this…don’t have time today to read everything. I don’t think age is a good reason to limit Senate or House terms. I think they should be limited in the same way and for the same reasons presidential terms are limited: To prevent too much consolidation of power for too long, calcification of policy, and formation of artificial ceilings that limit new ideas. Limitation of presidential terms to 4 years, with a maximum of 2 terms is why our checks and balances work. I’m not saying senatorial terms should be limited to 4/2, but definitely something similar. Our current economic crisis might have been prevented if we had term limit checks and balances in the House and Senate.

Palin girl, go home and mind baby
You looking cool
But don’t be a fool
Respect your family
Go home and mind baby

II
It is clear you have no experience
Mackie using you for expedience
You should practice a little patience
And convince de world that you have a conscience

III
The GOP call you maverick
Cause you wearing burgundy lipstick
But their actions are so erratic
Like a pit-bull they have you feeling frantic

There’s no doubt you fit the criteria
But no way you could beat Obama
So take Dude and Bristol back to Wasilia

@ocliberal (11:32:07) :

I think it would go forward, since the ballots are already printed and people have been early voting. From the ballot language we passed in 2004, it’s impossible to tell what happens now that we’re this close to the election. If we were within 60 days of a primary, it would just go forward, but we may have to have a special election instead of just relying on the results of Tuesday’s election. My bet is that if he’s going to resign, he’ll wait till after Tuesday to do so. That way, if he wins, he can resign and then we’d have to have a special election within 60-90 days. If he loses, then it’s just all over for him.

Here’s the ballot language that we passed in 2004:

This measure would repeal state law by which the
Governor makes a temporary appointment of a person to
fill a U.S. Senate vacancy until a special or regular
election can be held. Under existing law the seat
remains vacant until an appointment is made. Under the
initiative the seat would remain vacant until the election
is certified and the senate meets. Existing law provides
that a special election will be held within 60 to 90 days to
fill a vacancy unless the vacancy occurs within 60 days
of the primary election for that seat. This initiative does
not change that provision.

WAY OT…
I need to say I am sorry. Yesterday I could only sit on the side of the mudflat and watch all of the exciting posts about Steven’s fly by. I shared in the emotion of it all.

I was personally devastated by 2 events yesterday. First when they found 7 year old Julian King shot in the head in an SUV. I had hoped so much that this story would have a happy ending for Jennifer Hudson, and her sister Julia. Then I read the headline yesterday: An 8-year-old boy died after accidentally shooting himself in the head while firing an Uzi submachine gun under adult supervision at a gun fair. I’m sorry I was so effected by this. What kind of moronic scum do this to their children. I hate gun happy jag offs. This child began firing a very powerful weapon without assistance and the recoil was so strong the barrel kicked back and fired at the boy’s head. WTF!!!!!!! Tell me why we should not enact some kind of common sense gun laws in this country.

Devastated I was, because I lost my only child an 8 year old son Aaron to a disease called ALD, he took his last breath, 4 years, 1 month ago at this moment on the 28th, 2:53pm (CST). That day I lost my best friend forever.

I am sorry I had to take this time off to recover. I love you all. And I am feeling better now, so I hope to spend a little time with everyone later, before I have to leave for a meeting here in Chicago.

Good news from “The Nation:”

“Ever since Minnesota Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s poisonous comments on Hardball ten days ago, it has looked increasingly possible that her deep red district might turn blue next week.

“Her Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) party opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg, a former mayor and state transportation commissioner, has raised more than $1.5 million since Bachmann channeled Joe McCarthy on MSNBC. The Washington Post reported today that Tinklenberg’s fundraising “in a single week, is more than what any other Democratic challenger has raised in a fundraising quarter in the entire two-year election cycle.”

“Bachmann’s constituents seem to be rejecting her politics of division, distraction and demonization as well. According to a new Minnesota Public Radio/University of Minnesota Humphrey Institute poll, Tinklenberg – previously considered a long-shot – now leads Bachmann 45 to 43 percent. Approximately 40 percent of the district’s voters say that they have “re-evaluated [Bachmann] and are less likely to support her,” and two-thirds disagree with her comments.”

I have a very bad habit of analyzing things to find out why they happened. It’s interesting and frustrating at the same time. I was thinking about this election and also reading the posts by the Mudflaters and going to other sites that Mudflaters have referenced. I’ve been around this earth for more years than I like to remember and I have never seen an election like this. An example is this website.

There is no reason for this site to be popular outside of Alaska unless something special was happening but there are posters from around the globe. The interest from countries around the globe is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. (Could it be that other people are pulling for us?) Many people have admitted to an addiction to this site. (Not me; I can quit coming here anytime. I quit this site ten times a day.) What is that special thing happening that draws people to this site? I doubt that it is just because of Palin. What makes Mudflaters hang onto every word from the moderator and then cry for more?

I went to the DailyKos website and saw pictures of Obama standing in a driving rain and speaking to 9000 people. Every picture showed people with eyes that beseeched Obama to live up to his promise to change America. People were listening to him as if he was the only one in the world that could save us from ourselves. Many of the pictures showed faces that had almost despaired that America could be saved but they are willing to rally around this man in an attempt to give it one more try. I scrolled down to the pictures of a McCain rally and saw about 200 people in a warm, dry gym listening to their pick for President. It strikes me that there is something wrong that 9000 would brave the elements to hear Obama speak but 9000 wouldn’t sit in comfort to listen to McCain.

I see Obama talking at his rallies and I remember people saying that there would never be a Black President. I see the people listening intently to Obama and I can tell that they do not see a black man; they see an intelligent man that really seems to care that America is hurting bad and he wants to fix it. There seems to be a new idea that we must take leadership from whoever is qualified no matter what the color of his skin is; that this is no time to be a racist.

What is this special thing that is ruling this election? I’ve come to the conclusion that it is a special kind of spirit like nothing that has ever been on this earth before. It cannot be seen, heard, weighed, tasted or touched but you can definitely feel it. You must beware of this special thing as it will enter your body and consume you and fill you with hope for the future. I do not see the same thing with the McCain campaign. I only see fear, disgust, confusion, a bit of racism and even some hate. There is none of that special thing in the McCain campaign.

Re: Stevens resignation. I’m thinking that his resignation (or not) from the office he currently holds is a separate matter from the election being held to see who will be in that seat as of Jan 3.

If he resigns before the end of his term (whether before or after Nov 4), that would vacate the seat. I assume that existing state law provides for the case where a seat becomes vacant between an election and the end of the previous term, and logically it would just stay vacant until the newly elected officeholder was sworn in.

If Stevens wins the election and resigns (in either order), then the newly enacted special-election rule would seem to apply, 60 to 90 days from the effective date of his resignation.

If Begich wins the election, he will become the new Senator in January. Since that would be just over sixty days from the earliest resignation date, it wouldn’t seem to make sense to have a special election for the remainder of Stevens’ current term, but in any case it will be Sen Begich in the next term.

I don’t know AK law, but in CA it is now too late to substitute a party candidate on the ballot for this election. At this point, you can’t even withdraw (although you can of course decline to serve, i.e., resign without serving). Strictly speaking, Stevens could resign before the election, and the voters could still elect him for the next term.

Let us just hope Begich wins, and collapses the probability function.

The DJIA is up almost 900 points, just before closing. While this is good news for our 401k’s, could it be bad news for Obama/Biden? After all, if people start feeling more economically secure …. just sayin’. Funny this happens in the run up to election day.

Thanks for the link UK Lady. Those photos were beautiful, and you’re right — the 5th one needs a hankie. I am profoundly moved by the unity that Obama has brought to this country. Although I’ve never considered myself racist in any sense, I have also not felt as one with all of the other races in this country as I do now. The idea of Obama being President makes me cry tears of joy. I so hope that this country can move forward. History in the making, for everyone. A part of me will be sad when it’s over because there are so many amazing moments that have come from this campaign. Seeing photos like those make me happy, and able push the thoughts of the ugliness of the M/P campaign tactics & the worst that they’ve brought out in their supporters aside.

Thank you for your very thoughtful comment. I felt just the same when I looked at the picture of Obama and the crowd in the rain in Chester, PA. I felt filled up and shored up by something that the shriveled up and angry Republican base will never understand…and for a brief moment I felt sad for them.
You are right whatever it is, it’s powerful. It’s like a revitalizing cure and a righteous wind and sweet potato pie all rolled into a package. It’s bracing and delicious and precious. You can feel the power of goodness. And like the song says, “a train’s comin’, you don’t need no ticket, you just get on board.” Even with these attempts, I’m not getting at it. But thanks for your own expression.

@kimosabe: I think it’s gonna take more that one or two big up days on the stock market to make folks feel all spiffy about the economy. And, while I’m sure there are those who wish they could manipulate the stock indices to affect the election, that ain’t the case. Just bargain hunting after a crazed selloff.

Shikago: My heart goes out to you. To lose a child is wrenchingly sad. Prayers and thoughts go out to you. Take solace that there are always people who care.

kimosabe: I read the market as confidence that everyone believes Obama is going to be elected President and we can start to rebuild this country. Take it as a good sign.

robg: Beautifully sad! Yes, this election is something very special. We should all treasure every minute of it. It not just that a Democrat is winning after 8 years of horror or even that he is a black man although both are wonderful things. But the fact that this is such a gifted man who is blessed with good character, great intelligence and the amazing ability to bring hope and reconcilation to so many people. That is what makes makes this election so very, very special.

I think the reason so many of us are on sites like this one or showing up at rallies by the tens of thousand is because we recognize how significant this election is and we want to somehow just be a part of it.

Hope is such a beautiful word!

Ok, folks. I am steaming over the word socialism. My brother was just telling me that on his realtor forum, people were tossing around socialism and people not paying taxes like they were candy.

First, the not paying taxes thing–most people pay some kind of taxes (sales, property, etc.) whether or not they pay income tax. Therefore, the forty percent don’t pay taxes simply isn’t true.

Second, think of not making enough to pay income taxes. That’s really little money, and who could live on that?

Third, I am reclaimingsocialism. It’s being used like feminism/ feminist in the seventies and eighties and liberal any time the Republicans have been in office. I am and have been a socialist capitalist all my life. I am not going to cringe in fear at the word socialist or think it’s a dastardly thing.

I would say to these people, “Do you like driving on roads? Do you like having public transportation available? Do you like having cops and fire people ready to serve and protect? If so, then shut your mouth. Any time you have government (taking taxes, doing what’s right for the common good), you have a form of socialism.”

In addition, I don’t want to pay for this damned war, but I have no say in that. I don’t want to bailout the richest one percent of our country, but I have no say in that, either. If the Republicans don’t want to pay for whatever they don’t want to pay for, then it’s only fair that EVERYONE gets that right.

You’re afraid of socialism? Did you notice we just nationalized banks around the country? Did you notice the billions we are giving to auto manufactorers so they don’t go out of business? Did you notice the $800 billion (including true pork, and not science research projects) we just gave to Wall Street?

Bah. Don’t talk to ME about socialism until you can actually define it.

It is so tragic about these boys who died and we feel more anger than anything when people try to defend gun ownership in the face of catastrophes such as these.

And I agree, that looking at those photos of Obama in the rain, the hope and joy and peace in the eyes of the people watching, we feel that just maybe we have reached a hopeful place and will be turning the corner towards a better world.

Ah I see some are commenting on my favorite subject Socialized Medicine. You insurance company is AGAINST it. Here are some of my medical charges:

Primary Doctor submitted $94.00 Insurance pd. $41.92 My co-pay $10.00
Orthopedic Surgeon sub. $566.00 Ins. pd. $207.69 co-pay $25.00
Phys. Therapy sub. $251.00 Ins. pd. $64.53 co-pay $25.00
Ambulance sub. $426.00 Ins. pd. $288.72 co-pay $100.00
Cardiologist sub. 145.00 Ins. pd. $87.69 co-pay $25.00

It’s nice to see that people pay attention to what their doctors actually are paid. I work for my brother, a neurosurgeon, and do all the billing (I moved into the job after he realized his fairly paid office mgr was stealing substantial sums from him). I agree completely with what hHh said much earlier about health insurance companies–they are nothing more than white collar mafia, IMO. Not only do they dictate everything from what they’ll approve to what they’ll pay, they do everything as ineptly as possible in order to delay parting with any money for as long as possible.

I don’t mean to offend any health insurance employees, here, but the industry itself is racketeering, plain and simple.
