The strange and unpredictable Ted Stevens jury is proving to be a challenge. Today, we learned that Juror #4, who went AWOL yesterday night, left the state to attend her father’s funeral.
Without explanation to the jurors, Judge Sullivan dismissed the other 11 at 9:50am today. Reports say the 11 jurors didn’t look pleased. They may just want to get this trial over with. They’ve been living and breathing Ted Stevens and the Girdwood chalet since September 22nd.
Judge Sullivan will hold a hearing on Sunday night to determine whether the juror will be able to return to the trial. Even if she agrees to return to D.C., it is unlikely that the trial will resume on Monday. A postponement until Tuesday, or Wednesday will add considerably to the drama of the trial…at least from an Alaskan perspective.
Many Alaskans hold the opinion that these jurors are choosing who will win the coveted Senate seat in November. Stevens requested a speedy trial so he could “clear himself” before November 4th. Whether his confidence will prove to be justified, we don’t know.
With just one point separating Stevens from Begich in the latest poll, Alaskans now look forward to several more days of waiting and wondering.
off topic, but Nana asked for Pittsburgh update:

The delay is a good thing, since Stevens wanted a speedy trial so he could clear himself before November 4th.
Sorry – I know the above was off-topic, but I was SO EXCITED I just had to share. It was a great moment. There was a steady stream of people voting.

This was a hot one on the Drudge Report yesterday. It reeked of a Susan Smith replay to me but I guess the Repugs will go after anything at this point. Absolutely anything. How disgusting and disturbing.
They sure are following the Karl Rove Playbook…posted on a previous blog
“page 2: If you need to lie, make it an outrageous lie, it will set the first perception and stick in people’s minds. Those who want to believe it will spread it like wildfire. The media will make it a news story because it is controversial and report on it neutrally to show their lack of bias.
page 3: The best lies are ones that cannot easily be disproven or would take a lengthy explanation to disprove.
page 4: “repeat the big lie”, “repeat the big lie”, “repeat the big lie”, “repeat the big lie”, “repeat the big lie”, “repeat the big lie”, “repeat the big lie”
It’ll be interesting to see if Fox has the decency to apologize for running with this. They should do a chart on the credibility of the McShame campaign…how low can it possible go…we’ll see still 12 more days.

Question:
Can anyone remember a presidential campaign where one candidate:
1. Was endorsed by two former governors of the opposite party.
2. Was warmly endorsed by the most respected and popular member of the encumbant administration of the opposite party.
3. Was endorsed by the members of several families whose names are virtually synonymous with the opposite party.
4. Is so successful in fund-raising, he is able to outspend his opponent 4:1.
5. Gave speeches in foreign countries attended by 200,000 cheering people.
6. Took strong leads in states that had not gone for his party in a presidential election in several decades.
7. Rose in the polls after vigorous attacks by his opponents.
8. Rose in the polls after being called a terrorist and a traitor.
9. Won the debate polls after every presidential debate.
10. Caused the opposite party to self-destruct.

Todd said she was driving around in her car, looked in her rear-view mirror, saw a B and the first thing she thought of was Democratic presidential nominee Sen Barack Obama, according to a police report obtained by WTAE Channel 4 Action News.
This story doesn’t even make sense! The first thing she thought of was Barack Obama? Judging by the articles I’ve read, it’s obvious the girl couldn’t keep her story straight. Obviously, a disturbed individual.
It will be interesting how Hannity & co will spin this. Of course McCain will somehow find a way to blame it on Obama.

Decided to get away from politics & blogs this am & get a few things done…like grocery shopping…walking the dog etc. Came back home & read Huffington Post & came to this site….this is one crazy ass election!!!!! It may well be one crazy ass world. Only eleven more days to go…..how many more vile dirty tricks can be played?
I think the CofC is concerned about the Dems reaching 60 seats. I have mixed feelings about the wisdom of that goal. Here’s my thinking, and I’d love to be talked down.
There is a place in any democratic system for a loyal opposition — loyal to democratic principles and the nation, even over party. Now, we all know that the GOP of late has demonstrated far more loyalty to party than to country. That’s shown to be true by the response to conservative intellectuals and GOP moderates coming out for Obama. But I’m wondering if the current incarnation of the GOP will emerge from the election so tarnished that it will reverse course and move back towards being a center-right party rather than a far-right one. Or if the sane voices will gather all the disaffected Republicans and form a new party, leaving the GOP to the dust-bin.
If the GOP remains committed to its far-right ideology and methods, I can’t help but think that there may well be a few wiser GOP heads left in the Senate who would choose to side with the Dems in invoking cloture and getting on with the business at hand.
That’s the practical side of the argument. But there’s another more philosophical reason I’m not sure 60 is right. A loyal opposition serves the important function of restraining a run-away majority. It tends to moderate the extremes of either side, and I think that’s important. We’ve seen and continue to see the effect of lack of regulation on the economic system. I’m not eager to see a similar situation in our political system. We need to be open to and respectful of the ideas of the other side to see which ones might have merit.
If Obama’s approach of listening, of respecting people and differing ideas, can carry into the Congress, we may well see a sea-change there in how it operates. We will need to continue to hold our Senators and Representatives accountable. We need to make sure Barack’s message of a new kind of politics is firmly planted in Congress.
We’ve been asking what we’ll do after Nov. 4, and particularly after Jan. 20. Well, I think our mission will be to insist that civility return to Congress and even to the airwaves. We don’t all need to agree, but we can insist upon respectful discourse. It’s been somewhat easy here on The Flats because we generally are in agreement. But that same level of largely intelligent conversation is desperately needed throughout our nation. We’ll need to do a lot to reassure those rabid and bigoted McCain supporters that the world isn’t coming to an end. It’s not going to be easy. But how many of us truly thought at the beginning of this campaign that we’d be where we are now?
Rose in PA (12:27:52) :
It will be interesting how Hannity & co will spin this. Of course McCain will somehow find a way to blame it on Obama.
Doh! Of course it’s Obama’s fault. Under McCain’s economic policies, a little person like Ashley Todd wouldn’t have had 60 bucks in the bank and wouldn’t have been accessing an ATM to take it out (Ash’s parents fronted her $100, based upon Obama’s promise of tax cuts for the middle class).
Barack better watch himself. Ashley’s parents just might sue him for making their daughter feel ‘uppity” and unhingeing her mind.
Why was this juror not replaced? Anyone going through this kind of family crisis doesn’t need the stress of jury duty.
Just ridiculous.

The Stevens trial seems very curious. Not quite sure what is happening. I think maybe they are stalling & waiting to see if Palin selfdestructs or not. It all seems interrelated to me. I will say this has been a very bad week for Ms. Palin.

OT, but here in Colorado (at least in Douglas County), you can go online and verify if your mail-in ballot has been received. I just checked and mine – with its Obama/Biden vote – is there all safe and sound. It feels really good to be able to verify that.
What is wrong with Democrats dominating the House, the Senate, and the White House? That’s exactly what the Republicans did for 6 years. Of course, the Dems will use the opportunity to improve our country for ALL the peolple, not just for the rich. Maybe that is why the Reps are so upset.
Hey, C.Rock,
Texas may surprise us yet. Heck, even Georgia looks competitive in recent polls. I’m amazed at how good I feel after voting today – whether or not Obama takes Virginia.

O.T. The other day and in a thread long long ago someone posted a phone number for ppl to take to the polls- a number that could be called if there were problems like the machine says you voted McCain when you did not, or delays etc.
Can someone remember the number and repost it? I think it should be in every thread and on every cell phone JUST IN CASE! If no one has it I will go back through the threads over the weekend.
THANKS!
RE: Stevens Jury. If they are not sequestered, and it sounds like they were not, I do not think there will be a mistrial. I think the Judge will bring in the alternates and keep going. The deliberations have to start anew when the alternate(s) is/are seated but that is all.
Juries often go home during the holidays etc. I think the judge wants to see if #4 returns so he knows if he needs one or two alternate jurors.
Deep Blue in Va
Thanks I needed that . It would be something if Obama took Texas. Iam sure no one has done a survey here in forever. Anything is POSSIBLE if you believe.
Dreaming Texas BLUE
I find the whole Stevens saga bizarre all the way around. I can’t understand why he’s even competitive in the Senate race. I understand he has long been a beloved figure, but he’s also 84 years old! I mean, he would be 90 at the end of the next term – doesn’t that fact alone give voters serious pause?
Do any Alaskans have some insight into this?

You can’t make this stuff up….
Excuse my ignorance but the first Troopergate gate investigation is in the books and there was an abuse of power violation. Now what? Is there a penalty phase to this? Does it take the entire legislature? When?
By the way, I listened to Ron Reagan on POTUS08 (XM). At the end of the interview, he was asked about the health of his mother (doing very well) and who she was voting for. There was a laugh and an acknowlegment that Nancy publicly endorsed McCain. He then said that only Nancy knows who she will actually vote for. He said that Nancy very much admires Obama and that he reminds her of her husband in many ways (although I don’t think policy is one of them).
C.Rock,
Talking Point Memo lists three polls for Texas, and while McCain still has a ten-point lead, the polls seem to be tightening.
Texas could go blue – stranger things have happened, and this election cycle has been one unbelievable ride!
Keep dreaming Texas BLUE!
OT but it caught my eyeball:
“Gov. Sarah Palin, criticized by some as indifferent to Alaska Native concerns, says she has formed a new gubernatorial subcabinet that will focus on issues in rural, largely Native parts of the state”
Had she not been put out on national coverage, this would never have been her response. This is lip-service, a little too late, to make her look concerned to the lower ’48.
The rural dwellers, out of the $30B in the state coffers, rather than investing in the Sudan, should have been invested in ensuring the original people of Alaska were taken care of, in the form of a ‘delivery subsidy’.
She’s happy to give subsidies to her Oil Baron boyfriends, and talk out of the side of her mouth about caring about the Bristol Bay fisheries while she’s giving Pebble Mine the go-ahead to destroy the fish-stock for generations to come, but can’t give delivery subsidies for basic life necessities.
I say, let her live out there for a winter. Not a month, – the whole winter like they have to, with a shortage of over-priced fuel, and a shortage of $10 milk.

@Tom
Love Ron Reagan & Patti Davis intelligent forward thinking Democrats…. as was their dad in the olden days. I guess John & Nancy had a rather cool relationship since McCain dumped Carol for Cindy. Nancy was close to McCains’s first wife. As we have seen in the last couple of weeks… McCain would sell his soul to the devil to be President of the United States.

I read Kathleens article and feel vindicated.
You will find my comment scattered all over this blog, but she said it more effectively than i did, but basically, he selected Barbie because for the 1st time in 20 years, she gave him a woody..!
In a more articulate manner, that’s what she said, and it makes total sense that she appealed to him in ways no male would have, and not any older women as well. She was just the right age, just the right look, and had the right scent to draw him in.
oh no.. i seem to be banished!
Linda in Virginia (13:16:22) :
“Kathleen Parker brings a little science ”
The Canadian study is interesting, but really doesn’t cut to the heart of the matter. The Palin phenomenon is only partly explained by her physical attributes. Her beauty pageant experience has prepared her for the role of being a fantasy object and she knows how to use it and to take on any attributes she needs to add to the Caribou Barbie character to lull the unwary into enthusiasm. The deeper aspect is her role as “anti-feminazis”. She is Rush Limbaugh’s image of the ideal woman, the one that people look for Russian mail-order brides are chasing after. She plays up sexuality, is a good spectator when her husband runs his hyper-macho races, is a good hunting and fishing companion, pops out kids regularly, earns enough money to keep them all fed, still defers to her husband. Of course there’s a lot of Moose turd (say that with a French accent and you get a bad Grey Poupon joke) in that image.

Like I heard someone say today – this political campaign is taking us to places that we don’t really want to go…
I’m in Texas and voted Monday morning! I’m thinking the whole US MAP have a strong possibility of going Blue!!
You never know what is going to happen on a jury. I sat on one in Anchorage once (a minor criminal case), and among the jurors were the City Manager and a stripper from the Wild Cherry Club! While 10 of the 12 thought the defendant was not guilty, 2 others were convinced that “he must be guilty, why else would the police have arrested him?” Ultimately it was decided that if we really wanted to get out in time for supper, we’d have to reach a verdict, and the recalcitrant duo came around. Hey, ya gotta eat.
It is very strange indeed that the Republicans have become the party of the high-profile loonies.

When you look at the young woman in Pittsburgh mentally visualize the same sort of person at seventy something and you see the old woman who called Obama an Arab. Both of them are wracked by fear, a fear of the other and a fear of loosing what little they have. The real crime here falls squarely on the head of the hypocrites who callously stoke that fear out of their own self-interest. – McCain, Palin, Rove and those who aid and abet their fear mongering.
Man, that Stevens’ saga is getting more bizarre by the day!
@Chief Hussein Shikago, sorry for your loss, but glad you got your vote on.
Now, warning, this is going to be a rant about race. There. You were warned.
Ms. Ashley Scott is now blaming the media for blowing up the story. She made up the bizarre story about being attacked by the big, black guy at the ATM, but I didn’t hear a sorry in there.
She NEEDS to apologize to everyone, but especially black men for continuing to enforce stereotypes about the scary black men. This happened near me years ago when a woman went missing, was ‘found’, and sad she had been kidnapped by a black guy. It was later proved that she had made it all up, and she confessed. The search cost hundreds of thousands of dollars when it was all said and done. She was put on probation and had to pay something like two thousand dollars restitiution.
Like Ms. Scott, she had a history of mental health issues. Like Ms. Scott, she seemed to be your every day average college girl until this happened. Like Ms. Scott, she was a young white woman purportedly taken by a big, scary black man, and she made all the media coverage.
The prevailing feeling at the time is that she didn’t need to go to jail, she just needed help, the poor thing. She must have been under stress and blah blah blah. People ended up feeling more sorry for her than anything else, and the story quickly faded.
I don’t doubt she needed mental help. I don’t doubt she was screwed up. Just like I don’t doubt the same thing about Ms. Scott. However, this is what makes my blood boil–I am tired of stories of young white women being harmed/going missing dominating news coverage. I am tired of reading small blurbs about kids of color being killed or kidnapped with no follow up to the stories. I am tired of easily excusing these messed up white girls for their mental health problems without considering how much damage they are doing to racial relations in this country.
They need to be held accountable! There needs to be as much coverage of the debunking as their was of her claim. Papers and blogs should have been more cautious in covering this story, especially when it was pretty apparent that there were major discrepancies in her several accounts of what happened.
She needs to have mandatory counselling. She needs to do hundreds of hours of community service, preferably helping kids of color. She needs to pay restitution for all the money and person-hours wasted on her bogus claim. Lastly, I think she needs to spend some time in lock up. I didn’t feel that way about the other woman I mentioned, but I feel that way now. Minimum security, fine. Weekend furloughs, fine. She just needs to understand that there are real consequences for such egregious behavior and not to spin it like she’s the victim.
Rant over. Sorry for spewing. I am just tired of all the race-baiting going on in this election cycle, and I am ready for a nap.
You know, Fox *ack* actually said that if that girl was lying, that McLame’s campaign was “over”. They’ll spin this to the hilt. She’s one sick puppy, agreed, but that does not mean she should not be punished. And all the people who immediately believed her JUST BECAUSE it was a black man reportedly attacking her, shame on them!!!
They are showing Michele Bachmann’s new “soft touch” TV commercial on Hardball. Sorry lady, case closed!
Ms. Todd. I have no idea where I got the Scott from. Sorry. I know she needs help and that she’s a product of her environment, but she also needs punishment. That’s part of the deal when you do something wrong.

The woman may not be mentally healthy. Hence one more case to support Obama’s healthcare plan.
She may also be a racist or not. Depends on if she saw the scenario as a way of garnering attention. Repub hubby has obviously been hearing expectations of similar events predicted on FOX. Hence one more reason illustrating the danger in smear/fear/hate talk.
This is racist! Saying that a black man did this to her….well that just let you know her intentions were to rawl the other racist from the far right. If an Obama supporter did this, why didn’t she say it was a white man? Since White men support Obama as well.
They really need to chill with this sh%t! They so do not want to go there!

One more thing on Ms. Todd, it was racially-motivated. She said it was a black man in order to stir up the base of McCain. She could have said, as Let’sGetReal for “That One” pointed out that it was a white man or even a big woman, but no. She goes straight to big, black guy.
Since it was racially-motivated, it was therefore racist. I don’t care if she thought of it that way or not, it’s what her actions reflected.

I TOTALLY agree with the rant. She may or may not be racist but I think selecting a black man as the assailant tends toward the former more than the latter.
Arrest, fine and community service and counseling will be good for her and for society.

In response to the question “More Light Than Heat” posed about the Democrats reaching the magic 60.
The only thing that makes me not fear that it will cause a complete Democratic avalache is that Democrats aren’t know for being locksteppers. Unlike Republicans, Democrats are hard to keep herded up as evidenced by the Blue Dogs in the House. Of course the Senate seems to be a little more “team” oriented but still you see the Democratic Senators working with the Republicans to avoid stalled bills and more often then not it’s the Republican point of view that wins out.
Then when looking at the 60 how does Liebermann fit into that total. Are they going to have to get 60 Democrats so that the independent Liebermann can be cast aside due to his treasonous acts in regards to McCain or will they embrace Liebermann to return to the fold?
This whole Liebermann thing really irritates me and I sincerely hope that he is gone after the next Senate election. At the very least the Democrats need to strip him of his Committe Chair, especially since he’s done little if anything with it to help the country.
Well that’s by $3.98 on the subject, sorry for the ramble.

Right on, right on and right on.
I am so damn tired of people excusing their own crap by saying they didn’t intend it to be hurtful, racist, younameit. So, it’s better to be thoughtlessly dissed than intentionally dissed? I don’t think so.
Well, the woman probably needs attention and saw “JOE” getting all the attention, except she really made mistakes…A black guy? Why not white, red or yellow? And sexually assaulted? Ha lot of sympathy that would get from Bible spice, who make’s woman pay for there own rape kits. If you look at her picture, you can see yellowed around both eyes, she had 2 shiners and they are not recent. Her BF/Pimp probably beat her up, she probably is a victim of somebody’s abuse…then she burned the B on her face.
She should be charged! Of course she is mentally ill, she’s voting McLame & bible spice!
She should also be charged with a hate crime, since the whole purpose was to draw attention to race. This is going to be wild if they find out the “campaign” was behind this….! JTP was a repub plant, make no mistake. McLame is desperate and bible spice is basically jumping ship, campaigning for herself.
This election on the repub side is looking like a BAD soap opera!!!
And now it’s come out that a McCain campaign official was giving false details about the incident to the press…
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/mccain_aide_gave_reporters_inc.php#more
uh oh – looks like McCain has lot yet another news cycle.
Oops – that was LOST yet another news cycle
Ashley Todd is a distractor, she becomes the focal point of a discussion over racism and crime and punishment and the instigators get off and continue to incite this kind of hatred by saying she and other pathetic people like her are solely to blame. There is no doubt that she has to make redress for what she has done. But if we focus on that we let the real culprits get off the hook. They are able to claim that they had nothing to do with the actions of this fear-maddened woman when they did everything in their power to stoke that fear in the full knowledge of the type of response it would inevitably provoke.
When I was young, in my 20’s I was raped by a black man because I was a white woman, I was told by him. He smacked me with all kinds of lovely names to “teach me a lesson” about “asking for it”. I felt sick inside – but mostly for HIM! I learned a great deal going through that experience. I was (still am) enraged about the man – but never his color.
Now, over thirty years later I understand racisim better than I ever have and there is truly NO place for it in our world. We are all in this together people. Strip away our exterior, and we are all the same. I am not talking about cultural differences because I hold those in high regard.
For the life of me I cannot understand the mind that would want to stoke the fires of hatred (all kinds), especially those who call themselves “Christians”.
I prefer to find common ground in any situation rather than showcasing our differences.
*Rant off*
Please don’t hate me for this.
I am a registered democrat but only so I can vote in a primary in PA. I am an independent voter who analyzes every piece of information I can find before stepping into the booth. With that being said for most of my voting life I have always felt that the Republican leadership was dangerous but the Democratic leadership in Congress was incompetent. I was especially concerned when the last 2 years of the Clinton administration produced 2 years of surpluses and the republicans were fighting to cut taxes and the democrats were aching to fund new programs instead of doing the obvious (the Clinton position) and pay down debt.
Deep in my gut I fear that Nancy Plosi and Harry Reid are both in over their heads and that Barack Obama (assuming he wins) needs to be the beacon that they need to follow. What do others think about putting new leadership in Congress, perhaps Hillary Clinton to lead the new agenda.
@Goalie Sanka Palin in NM, I am sorry for the pain you experienced. The fact that you are able to make that distinction is remarkable.
RE: the faux assault victim… she will be charged and the college repubs she was affiliated with have distanced themselves… as most repubs do. We had to have a demo support emergency meeting today at work, we all get scared that something bad is going to happen and McCain will get elected. PRST/DSDFHVD symptoms (Potential Republican Stress Disorder & Democrats Snatch Defeat From the Hands of Victory Disorder) I just now made those up and think I am really clever 🙂
At any rate we calmed ourselves down, and will continue to do all we can to insure this landslide.
@Shikago, my condolences to you. You were missed, welcome back/
From an Obama interview with Joe Klein, regarding Obama’s speech on race:
Obama: Well, during the course of this campaign probably our response to those Reverend Wright videos had to be a spot decision, because frankly it was unanticipated and I hadn’t seen those incendiary videos before. The decision to make it big as opposed to make it small.
Joe The Journalist: To make the [Philadelphia] speech.
Obama: To write a speech in two days and deliver it at a time when there was a singular focus on the topic I think is an example of having to make decision based on what in my gut would make sense.
Joe The Journalist: What was your gut telling you?
Obama: My gut was telling me that this was a teachable moment and that if I tried to do the usual political damage control instead of talking to the American people like an adult — like they were adults and could understand the complexities of race — that I would be not only doing damage to the campaign but missing an important opportunity for leadership.
Nebraska Native AKA Froth Hussein Failin (14:27:42)
You are clever! Can I use that?
Now, we really mustn’t verbalize about anything bad; we must be positive! But, I think about it a lot too. Won’t say what I worry about, don’t want to put it out there in the universe – but, we will have these same issues to worry about once he takes office as well.
Dang – I better go get some Hardball.
I can’t figure out way Uncle Ted is even a consideration? If he does get elected he is going to be put out of the Senate by the Ethics Committee! Does he have that much pull that if this drags on until November 5th most people won’t vote? What are the early voters saying? You don’t leave a vote for Senator Blank. You are a week into early voting and everyone just waits to see the verdict? They are not coming to a verdict until next Wednesday. there are going to be a lot of people at the polls on November 4th….

@Tom from PA (13:14:02) :
Troopergate II is the Personnel Board investigation, the one SWWNBN called on herself and then tried to dismiss as (she claimed) she’d done nothing wrong. Troopergate I was the one done by the BIPARTISAN Legislative Council. They agreed to turn over their 1000+ page confidential report documents to the investigator for the Personnel Board, so that he could benefit from the work their investigator had already done and on which they based their shorter, released-to-the-public 243 page report. Hope that helps…
I am really sorry you went through that, Goalie. I know you don’t share that story lightly. I spent part of the day doing some work for our local women’s shelter, I’ve had a connection with them for over 20 years. It is terribly underfunded and overworked, thanks to the domestic and sexual violence that prevails.
I think we all find ourselves with some racist or at least feelings at times, in given situations, that we are ashamed have a tinge of racism/prejudice. But I have found the happiest part of Mudflats for me is to be in an environment where I don’t have to worry about people spewing racist hate here.
I do think racism comes so much from fear and hate passed down from generation to generation. As many have shared here, they often have a some or many racist relatives. How did they/we break from the mold? Is the tide changing? I’d like to believe younger people are more open-minded. There is plenty of proof in the masses of white youth for Obama. But then there are still plenty who stick with family tradition. And, of course, racism goes both ways.
I am just hoping that some of these more hateful people will see that Obama can help turn our country around – even though he is a black man. Maybe they’ll pipe down a bit.
Tom – “I don’t hate you because you are beautiful”! LOL
Nancy has been a little disappointment to me. Is it because she doesn’t have the votes yet? Hopefully we’ll see that after the election. Then, I agree, new leadership might be in order. I’m sure there will be lots of re-evaluations.
I had to live with Denny Hastert as my congressman for I don’t know how many years. But I have to say, in my eyes, compared to Newt – he was a huge improvement as Speaker of the House.
Harry Reid gets extra point from me for being an anonmoly – a Mormon Democrat. But I’m sure he won’t keep that position forever.
When people say that Obama is a black man, I correct them, in real life, and I say, “No, he had a black father.” I firmly believe that this makes people think differently when they are talking to me about this all. (Not many people do, because boy oh boy, do I have a ton of information to share from Mudflats! iT’S INTIMIDATING!) Still, I say it all the time. I encourage all to look at him not necessarily as a black man, but as a bi-racial man, with a black father. It helps people to think differently about his race. He’s the perfect display of what it means to be American, in my opinion. Well, besides all the other awesome things he is.

The “teach you a lesson” thing is common in this type of assault. Any excuse will do. Race was just an excuse.
@Ripley,
Agreed!
I also think that Sen. Obama is the perfect example of the “Great American Story”. To come from his humble beginnings, looking at his life and what he has accomplished. The land of opportunity and all that it represents is embodied in this man.
God love ’em and keep him safe.
Oh…a NEW THREAD guys!
Ripley – I agree – but there are all those “one drop” folks out there. I was actually hoping if they showed any photos of him with his grandmother this week, that might convince a few people. Of course, there are all those who are outraged by the mixing of races. So the hate goes on.
To add to my previous comment, though, I really see youth being much more open-minded about bi-racial dating now. Another reason to hope in another generation, things might change even more for the better.
Still will always be the haters, though. And McCain has certainly expanded that from race hate to prime the hate for Muslims and all “non Christians”. Heck, Obama is a Christian and they’ve managed to hate him for his Christian pastor, while still saying he is Muslim.
Ripley (14:46:24),
That’s an excellent approach.
I like to say, “no, he’s bi-racial, you know, like Tiger Woods”.
Even those who don’t follow golf know about and respect Tiger as someone who has transended race. Also his wife is white and they have the most beautiful ‘multi-racial’ child and another on the way.
asianHusseingrrl”that one”MN (13:49:56) : I don’t doubt she needed mental help. I don’t doubt she was screwed up. Just like I don’t doubt the same thing about Ms. Scott. I do not totally agree with your race-rant. Yes, the little bimbo may need some mental health, but she committed a crime when she falsely reported being attacked, and it deserves punishment. The police are going to charge her.
Your statement against prejudice was great until the above quote. I take exception to your obvious prejudice against white people. Why do you think that black people are the only ones experiencing prejudice? What you never hear about in the news is all the anti-white talk and action that is uncalled for and experienced by whites in day-to-day life, and a lot of it is pretty ugly. I live in Southern California, and no one down here can forget, when OJ was found “innocent”, driving to or from work and seeing black people lined up on the sides of the streets yelling “This one’s on you, whitey!” or “We got you!”, along with other things more explicit. There have been many times over the years that I, myself, have been subject to black prejudice. One time I was driving to work when a black man pulled up beside me, rolled down his window, and threw a glass bottle at my windshield. I screamed, but kept control of my car. Luckily, he missed my windshield by a couple of inches. I have been snubbed, pushed, denied service, cursed, etc., when I have done nothing wrong. I have had a number of jobs where I have had to work twice as hard as a black co-worker who was a slacker and could say nothing about it because it was common knowledge that all a black person had to do was play the race card and they would keep their job with no disciplinary action. I have seen countless examples of black on black prejudice, because one person had lighter or darker skin than the other, or because one person said of the other, “He (or she) acts too white.”
One thing that I have had to work hard at is to not be prejudiced against a black person, even when they proudly exhibited prejudice against me; I try to keep in mind that he or she is just a bad person, not a bad black person. I feel I have succeeded in this endeavor over the years. A few weeks ago I was being harassed by a black man as I waited in a slow moving line in a store. This went on for some minutes. I tried making small talk, I tried ignoring him. At one point he said to me, “Hey, you cute?” I decided enough was enough, turned to him and said, “I’m cute, I’m married, and I’m not interested!” Then I turned my back on him and he returned to his girlfriend. Most white people would have just kept trying to ignore him.
I now call someone on the race card when they try to play it on me. You can’t be the beneficiary of a color-blind society (which I’m hopeful Obama will bring) when you justify holding on to so much prejudice yourself.

Peace / Love / Obama/Biden 2008.
@NMJ, I think everyone is prejudiced. However, there is a difference between someone who is in the majority being prejudiced and someone who is in the minority being prejudiced.
Black people being happy about OJ being found not- guilty is partially in response to the racism that pervades law enforcement. Black men are arrested in a much higher proportion than white men for lesser crimes. I don’t condone the jubilation people felt at OJ being found not guilty, but I understand where it comes from.
You say ‘playing the race card’ when I call something racist? That’s playing the race card. Your claim that a person of color is lazy and you have to work twice as hard is also suspect as I would guess there are plenty of white people surrounding you who are just as lazy, if not more so.
There is no such thing as a color-blind society, nor would I want there to be. You know why? Because that usually means that the person of color has to assimilate to the white majority. There is a lot of racial anger that someone of the majority simply cannot understand. To claim that there is an equal ‘reverse racism’ as you will, is incorrect.
I could go on, but I will not.
One more thing in general: Tiger Woods is multi-racial, not bi-racial. This is especially important as he is half Asian.

“UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – John McCain’s U.S. presidential election campaign has solicited a financial contribution from an unlikely source — Russia’s U.N. envoy — but a McCain spokesman said on Monday it was a mistake.
In the letter, McCain urged Russia’s U.N. Ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, to contribute anywhere from $35 to $5,000 to help ensure McCain’s victory over Democratic rival Sen. Barack Obama, currently ahead in voter preference polls…
Moscow’s mission to the United Nations issued a terse statement on the Republican presidential candidate’s letter, saying that the Russian government and its officials ‘do not finance political activity in foreign countries.’…”
