Every once in a while, we need to cleanse our minds from matters of the inner workings of Alaska’s Personnel Board, 263-page reports from the Legislative Council, Workers Compensation claims by Alaska State Troopers, and take a break with something that requires little thought, or research. In this spirit, the big story yesterday was the outlandish $150,000 Palin wardrobe, provided to her by the Republican National Committee. Half of this staggering sum was spent at one store, the Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis. It’s against the rules for a campaign to pick up these costs (remember the John Edwards $400 haircut?), but due to a loophole (a button hole perhaps?), the RNC was allowed to foot the bill.
While I don’t claim to know what is going on in the minds of Republicans these days, I recall my Grandmother, who passed away in 1986. She was what I like to think of as a “good Republican”. She was fiscally conservative, quietly religious, and kind-hearted. She had no patience for scandal or dishonesty from politicians, and when presented with same, would sit herself down at the table in her sunny yellow kitchen and write a letter to the offending party, in small, perfect penmanship, giving them “a piece of her mind.” Sometimes the envelope would be reused, if she had received one in the mail in good condition. Why waste paper? She had raised a family during the Depression, and she understood the value of things. She donated to Republican candidates; not much, but she gave what she could. I never asked her personally how she felt about Richard Nixon. I suspect that Watergate gave her unending heartburn, but I also suspect that Nixon’s comment about how Pat Nixon didn’t have furs, but wore “a respectable Republican cloth coat,” resonated with her. My Grandmother had a respectable Republican cloth coat too.
I shudder to think what this principled woman, with whom I once shared a home, would think about Sarah Palin. What would be going through her mind if she had lovingly and dutifully written her $15 check, in her perfect penmanship, to the RNC, only to find out that it had been used to laminate Sarah Palin with a shiny red leather jacket and new stiletto heels? It would take 10,000 Republican grandmothers like mine to pay for that wardrobe.
It is surprising in some ways, that the “real Republicans” have not mutinied. Some have, but there hasn’t been the mass exodus one would expect. Too many Republicans suffer in silence, hoping that their party will come around; that they will spontaneously stop lying, race-baiting, subverting the constitution, and spending money like drunken sailors who like women in red leather. I think they’re going to have a long wait.
Meanwhile, back at the McCain campaign, we hear today that the six-figure wardrobe will now be donated to a “charitable purpose” after the campaign. So, keep your eyes peeled for a shiny red leather jacket at a Salvation Army store near you, and I’ll let you know if Sarah Palin comes back to Alaska in a respectable Republican cloth coat.
oh goody first
First? Yippie!
OK 2nd
Haha. That ‘ll be the day!
when they give the clothes away,do they also take the new clothes off little pipers’ back.i have 4 sons,we didn’t have much money when they were young,so i just think it is wrong to dress up a 7yr old and then take the clothes away.that women sucks as a mom.
My husband said it makes her look like a “cheap hooker”!
Shucks. Thought it was me.
Can she not afford to pay for her own clothes? She can look nice in public without spending 10s of thousands of dollars–sheesh! I don’t think I’ll spend that much in clothes in my whole life, also, too.
@Anomymous,
Would have to agree with you there.
My husband said it makes her look like a “cheap hooker”!
Bet SP had no idea she wouldn’t get to keep all the goodies.
Didn’t Amy Winehouse sing a song about those kind of high heels?
i would love to hear some outrage/disgust from of the joe-jane sixpacks, or joe the plumber, or joe blow, re this wardrobe malfuction.
how can anyone who extolls fiscal conservatism condone the flambouncy of dressing up of swwnbn.
Sorry about the inadvertant double post – but it does bear repeating!
Remember in Pretty Woman when Julia Roberts’ prostitute friend asked her, “do you get to keep the clothes?”
Sarah didn’t have as generous of a sugar daddy…
@ Kat Loves Wolves Hussein aka Kat in FLA (10:34:58) :
Bet SP had no idea she wouldn’t get to keep all the goodies.
—————————
I’ll bet SP and the RNC had no intention of donating ANYTHING until the press got wind of the clothing allowance. Oops! No regret for the behavior, just regret for getting caught.
Shameful.
Wanted to get you the lastest National Alaska Poll results:

I’d like to see those charity receipts when they donate all that stuff. In the interests of transparency and all.
The “real America” comments lately have really pissed me off. The same cities that were attacked on 9/11, a day that McPalin love to invoke in the name of God and all that, are those same places that are now being called “un-American.” Even Northern Virginia was labeled as “communist,” even though that’s where the Pentagon is. Embrace the tragedies for your own purposes, but dismiss the people who lived through them as un-patriotic and un-American. Gotta love that!
$150,000. I can’t get over that. At this time when america is hurting, and she has been talking about cutting off wasteful spending in Washington. How many regular American soccer mom’s do you know that go on shopping sprees at Saks Fifth Avenue, Macy’s, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus and Barneys New York?
Republicans are trying to say that the $150,000 spent on Palin’s wardrobe is trivial and shouldn’t be an issue. ($150,000 is trivial? There’s one of their problems).
However, this expenditure should be of concern to Republicans, given that McCain is having to prioritize and pull out of battleground states because he’s short on money.
Repubs running for the House or Senate in those states hould be furious. The McCain camp had enough money to spend $150,000 on Palin, a clearly unqualified VP choice who is now polling as the greatest drag on the ticket, but they couldn’t support their candidates for the House and Senate?
I think this should be the bigger story. After all, we all know that Palin is all style and no substance. Why spend $150,000 to reinforce this obvious fact?
FROM THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN.
PLEASE DONATE EVEN IF IT’S JUST $5.00!!!
I can tell you right now who’s going to win this election — the campaign that steps up its ground game in the final days.
The race is deadlocked in a number of crucial battleground states, including Ohio, Missouri, and Indiana. And we’re neck-and-neck in Florida, North Carolina, and Nevada.
We have to make our final, tough decisions about where to fight and how strong we can make our team. And those choices will depend on the financial resources we have tomorrow at midnight.
Will you make a donation of $25 or more before the deadline?
The margins of victory in this election will be slim, and it’s going to be decided in the field.
We’re up against the Republicans’ proven get out the vote push — which delivered victories for George Bush in 2000 and 2004.
We can’t fall short. There’s too much at stake in this election.
This campaign has contacted 11 million voters since the convention. But to hit our targets, we need to contact three times that number of voters between now and Election Day.
The more resources we have on hand, the more voters we can reach.
From the start, our field program has been in your hands. It depends on your time, your energy — and your generosity.
You decide how big we can go. The deadline is midnight Thursday, October 23rd. Please make a donation of $25 or more right now:
https://donate.barackobama.com/fielddeadline
With your support, we could potentially surprise in West Virginia and strengthen in places like Ohio.
We need to do everything we can to extend our reach — we can’t afford to look back on November 5th and say we could have done more.
Thanks for your commitment to building the best field program in the history of presidential politics,
Jon

Is this pledge to give away the clothing an admission that these folks know they’ll lose?
And who spilled the beans here? Are some repubs trying to sink their own ticket?
AKM – my sister in Kenai just wrote a little essay about our grandmother and how she felt about voting, etc. Is there somewhere to post it where it won’t take up screens of this thread? I think it’s so cool to reflect back on the values we got from our grandmothers!!
Why don’t you post it over in the Forum? You could put it under General Chat, or Politics, and title it “Values we got from our Grandmothers”. I bet others would like to share their stories as well. AKM
“charitable purpose”
Do you think the “charitable purpose” will be at the home of Sarah Palin? Let’s see, the Repugs have lied about everything else, why should this be any different? I do think however, the little one should be able to keep her pretty clothes. Heaven forbid, Sarah probably spends all her money on herself. Selfish Bi**h.
Beautiful job!! Great picture of your wonderful grandmother!! It is this kind of story that just very clearly puts these particular shenanegans in perspective! Thank you again for your excellent work!
I’ll send this out to all my list. This kind of stuff doesn’t need hyperbole. It is just the simple truth of what the world is coming to.
HOPE!
Obama/Biden!!
Well, she may come back to Alaska in a Republican cloth coat, but I know it won’t be respectable!
TheraP, I think this came from a required Federal Election Commission (FEC) filing of expenses for the period.
Andrea Mitchell said she had been covering campaigns for many years but she has never seen an FEC report like this one.
I just shook my head when I heard about this. What she spent in one day at Neiman Marcus is more than I make in a YEAR – and what I support my family of four on.
right, they’re going to auction the clothes off on ebay. snort.
I love your grandma! She sounds like mine.
I posted this late last night on another thread:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/22/palin-clothes-spending-ha_n_136740.html
In the above article about how republicans are livid about the money spent on Palin’s wardrobe, it states that “…the story has the potential to dampen enthusiasm among GOP activists and donors at a critical point in the presidential race. It also creates a huge PR headache for the McCain ticket as it seeks to make inroads among voters worried about the current economic crisis.” and “During a week in which the Republican ticket is trying to highlight its connection to the working class – and, by extension, promoting its newest campaign tool, Joe the Plumber – it was revealed that Palin’s fashion budget for several weeks was more than four times the median salary of an American plumber ($37,514). To put it another way: Palin received more valuable clothes in one month than the average American household spends on clothes in 80 years.”
The way this looks like just one more thing that is coming back to bite the McLame campaign in the rear big time made me think about the people running this campaign and the decisions they are making. Are they a modern-day version of the three stooges? I was also reminded of the old roadrunner cartoons. The coyote would try every dirty trick in the book to do in the roadrunner. No matter what the wily coyote would attempt, however, it would end up boomeranging back to him and bash him in instead as the roadrunner would go “beep, beep,” run circles around the coyote, and continue merrily on his way unscathed. Seems very similar to this campaign. You have to wonder at what point the whole thing will just implode.
SP’s $150K make-over is particularly bad optics as the market’s down another nearly 400 points today. Today’s reason? Weak earnings reports.
One of the issues of concern for investors is the companies who still have pensions will need to make up the portfolio losses in their pension funds. And that means less cash for dividends.
I don’t really lay most of the blame for this on SP, as I said in a post below. The RNC, however, are idiots. SP is an idiot too, but not on this score. I have a feeling they sent in an image consultant who said “Wear this.”
She was spending her time learning her speech, trying to memorize talking points and doing other stuff that a normal nominee would have already known.
No time to shop, most likely.
Stylists, because of the cost of their services only use “the best” stores. Most people they style (and who foot the bill) expect this. If the RNC had half a brain, they would have TOLD this person to lay off the designer duds, no place fancier than Macy’s allowed. Maybe Bloomies or Nordies. Period. She could have still looked nice for about a fifth the money. Still a lot, but they probably didn’t want to repeat outfits too obviously.
Seriously doubt the stuff will end up in the Salvation Army or Goodwill. It will either be in a trendy boutique consignment shop in Georgetown, or will be auctioned off for charity now that this has all come out. I’m betting on the later.
The stuff for the kids, I imagine (which I’m sure is no where NEAR the $$ of her wardrobe) she and the Dude will most likely reimburse the RNC for, which I think would make it kosher.
Like I said, she’s far from my favorite human (come to think of it, is she human?) but I don’t think she personally is to blame for this one.
Well, Michael Jackson will be relieved that his Thriller jacket will be coming back to him.
Not to mention…Cindy McCain’s RNC 3 day wardrobe costing over $330,000!
A lot of money to look like Wilma Jetson that’s for sure.
By the way, notice CiMc is not shaking hands these days at the rallies. What gives?
Also, too, there again, I would not be caught dead in something that had once been on her body, nosirree youbetcha.
I’m pretty sure she thought those were all hers for ever after, didn’t the repugs realize this would come out and how horrible it would look. IN THIS ECONOMY, you’ve got Michelle generally wearing regular average American mall type clothes and Obama wearing shoes with the soles worn away. Then by way of comparison there is Cindy in a THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLAR OUTFIT (just really can’t get over that one) and SP’s very high end shopping spree and well, McCain always looks badly dressed but it’s probably expensive since Cindy buys it. And they try to make the case that they are the regular folks, just like Joe whoever, how stupid do they think I am? I want the guy with worn out shoes and one house.
Sheesh, what I could have done with that 150K at T.J. Maxx…shame on her.
Click your red heels together and say three times, “I wish I were a reformer. I wish I were a reformer. I wish I were a reformer.”
I too remember Pat’s respectable cloth coat, AKM!
I guess that shouldn’t include a Louis Vuitton bag, either.
http://images.huffingtonpost.com/gadgets/slideshows/460/slide_460
PS — Cindy was wearing a black leather skirt yesterday – I think when her husband slipped up in his speech with his favorite “c” word for her.
Sorry – link to image of Piper carrying Mom’s bag didn’t make it above:
JBDC,
Yep, I am sure you’re right, donating it is the new plan now that it has come out. I feel her pain, it’s hard to go back after dressing at Neiman Marcus and Saks, so sad.
My grandmother was the Republican political wife covered in mink :X She had cloth too though ! And once her husband died and the parties stopped the mink was strictly used as blanket to snuggle with grandchildren 🙂 She called it her teddy bear and I probably earned it herself a young nurse and then working mother 🙂
Bech Hussein In IL–Yeah, I really wonder at Cindy’s clothes sometimes. She obviously didn’t take “Fashion for the Political Wife 101.” In some ways, I admire her for it, because her “fashion sense” has got to drive the PR branch of Rville nuts. WAY too “#*@% you, I’m the rich one in the family!” for their comfort. Since she an Johnny Boy have basically lived completely separate lives for years, I really wonder if she gives a darn about the whole thing.
What???? She doesn’t get to keep the lovely parting gifts????
Shoeho, I don’t know. If Palin is not capable of questioning anything that the McCain handlers tell her to say or wear, what kind of leader is she, really?
Congrats to John Feehery, Republican Strategist on MSNBC right now! He just made an honest comment!!! He said his wife would love to have those clothes, but he can’t afford them, and then he commented that there are candidates out there who would have loved to have $150,000 pumped into their close races!
Aha! The story is coming out.
I have alot of bills, and not alot of money, but I just made my weekly $25.00 dollar campaign donation. It is the BEST INVESTMENT I can make towards my family’s future…by helping to get Barak Obama elected!

Cindy McCain has always hated touching the great unwashed. I htink that thing on her arm was a fake so she could get away with not shaking hands. She is a total elitist through and through. And not in a good way !
Tooting my own horn, please stop by my and listen to Ronald Reagan as a Democrat in 1948. It’s amazing.
that was supposed to say my “blog”
ooops.
SP ‘s undergarments probaly cost a bundle also, will the RNC donate them too. what a gross thought that was. LOL
I vote to let Piper keep her clothes, seems mean to take clothes away from a child and as we know she does have a little temper, but I’ve got my eyes of that little red leather jacket….wonder what size it is.
Did you guys hear SP on local TV yesterday answering a question a third grader sent in to the show? He asked what A VP does. Her answer was one more totally ignorant proclamation out of her mouth! She is one dangerous cookie!
rf11 in FL–Hey, Mpuppy, where in FL? I’m in Martin County.
No, I really don’t think she’s capable of questioning anything they tell her to do. She’s like a wind up doll at the moment.
I don’t feel sorry for her and I don’t think she’s in any way qualified to be VP. Heck, I’m pretty sure she’s not qualified to be Gov!
I just think on this score (the campaign apparently at one time–I think for a debate– paid a MUA $5K to do JOHN, so SP $4ishK for a month doesn’t sound so bad!) it was a case of the campaign saying “What size do you wear, you need clothes that are more appropriate,” and they ran with it.
I agree that if had not made the press, she probably would have kept all the stuff–and given her lack of expertise on much of anything, may not have realized it was an issue. Now, they are going to have no choice but to do some big, “Sarah’s Campaign Wardrobe Charity Event.”
Dress for Distress!!!
Maybe CiMc could take a cue from Howie Mandel and just bump fists?
She has learned well from Uncle Ted. This is JUST a LOAN. I will turn them over in a couple years. Until then the clothes are just a loan resting in the closet.
Is there no end to the Palin’s disregard for Alaskans but for EVERYONE? $150,000 for threads and now we find out that the TAXPAYERS OF ALASKA paid for SP and sometimes her daughters, to attend rallies that they weren’t even invited to! AND, that she had to go back thru the expense records and CHANGE THE EXPENSE REPORT to make sure the ‘records’ showed it was ‘official’ business…
Read it for yourself:
http://shannynmoore.wordpress.com/2008/10/21/governor-palin-frauded-alaska/
Not to mention the days/nights she has charged to the state to stay at home!! It’s like the old Chinese water torture…drip…drip..drip..drip… What’s next??
WHEN DOES IT STOP???
C. Rock–you just HAD to bring that up, dintcha? ;’ )
Can’t you just imagine all those idiot R’bots who salivate over the likes of Anne Coulter and Laura Ingram with a chance to get their dirty old hands on SP’s probably La Perla knickers?
LOL, it’s just too much! I don’t know if it would cause a “rise” in Viagra sales, or way too many heart attacks. Oh, wait, their Republicans, they don’t HAVE hearts.
Hi Shoeho, I’m just south of you in Broward!
Besides the GOP candidates who are in close elections who should be furious to see $150,000 spent this way, I think another story should be about the small donors. Imagine not having much to donate, but taking $25.00 out of your budget to send to McCain, then finding out that money was spent so irresponsibly.
I don’t know that shoes with holes in the soles any more the thing for a presidential campaign than McCain’s un-whitened teeth or his women’s pricey outfits. The middle road between “frivolous” and “basic, decent American” would be appropriate, if you ask me.
Yeah, a $150,000.00 wardrobe … to wear for about 8 weeks. That’s real “Main Street!”
I don’t have documentation, but have heard that Cindy McCain has had an injured hand and I think that’s a perfectly reasonable explanation for not shaking hands much. (Could be a touch of arthritis there, as well.)
I’d also read, though, that political consultants usually teach their folks how to shake hands to avoid problems like that–they’re supposed to sort of reach over the extended hand and grasp it over the thumb. That keeps the person from actually closing on their hand. Avoids injury. Allows for quick release.
Brilliant, no?
Because there aren’t a lot of other substitute moves, without resorting to that “terrorist” fist bump. (Which I like, personally)
Wonder if I should call Homeland Security about South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier? He uses the fist bump almost exclusively. He’s mentioned that he doesn’t want his hand crushed and it’s also a little less germy…(I mean, if SP doesn’t wash her hands, wouldn’t you rather avoid an actual handshake with her????)
Also.
Just can’t help to notice how much Cindy McCain resembles this picture when I see her standing behind the Mr. at rallies: Worth a look…

Whadaya think?
“rf11 in FL (10:57:37) :

Wasn’t it Peggy Noonan the one that said that SP has proven herself to be a follower and not leader?
They aslo paid for a make up artist, hair stylist, and a voice coach. Expenses were hidden under the expenses of GOTV (get out to vote). The gift that keeps giving. I’ve been all over today but I think this was on Politico or Hugffington Post.

Oh, lookie dear….a Caribou Barbie Doll & she comes with all new designer clothing! Doesn’t she look “hot” in her red leather jacket and stylish stilleto’s?
Oooohhhhh….every little girl should have one of these!! And, introducing the all new Caribou Ken Doll, too!…he comes with his own snowmobile!!
What I love about all this is that she just keeps handing us stuff on a silver platter…….I wake up each morning wondering what new somethin’ will come outta that mouth!

The Devil made me do it. That’s my story and Iam sticking to it. LOL
I’ve got $50 here that says that the “charitable purpose” that those clothes go to is an auction to feather the RNC nest.
Perspective is fun… $150,000 is about 4 times my annual salary, and more than the house I bought 3 years ago cost.
First a free house. Now a free wardrobe. Reimbursements for her Kid’s and Todd’s travel and lodging. Per diems to stay in her own house.
Damn, this is one good gig Sarah’s got going. Think she’ll find someone to pay for Bristol’s wedding too?
And she’s out there droppin her “g’s” and relatin to the Joe’s – Sixpack, The Plummer and Ordinary.
What a fraud.
Just checked it was Politico. However they don’t give an amount. The expense was under “GOTV Consulting”.
AKM,
Thank you for sharing such a beautiful story. It makes me remember my wonderful Southern grandparents and their quiet strength and resolve. They were hard-working, proud military people. They always cared about this country and voted Democrat since FDR. I miss them. Thanks for inspiring a great memory of my loved ones.
Sara in MO
I posted this at the tail end of the other thread – among the list of people who CAN qualify to be President are :
*Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is an alien and as long as the other parent is a citizen of the U.S. who lived in the U.S. for at least five years (with military and diplomatic service included in this time)”
I also saw that someone mentioned SP’s new Louis Vuitton bag – and wondered if they realized that it was made by French Socialists?
http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/police-prepare-for-unrest-2008-10-21_3.html
What’s wrong with this picture? Calling out the troops on Nov 4th?
Shoeho:
Agreed, I’m sure SWWNBN didn’t decide where to shop or how much to spend. But I bet she didn’t bother checking the price tags, either. That red leather jacket was a real mistake for a politician, IMHO…just too flamboyant. (I bet it feels great on, though.) I’m sure she thought she was going to keep the clothes, too. Bad management, all around, by the campaign.
Pretty sure my Republican grandmother and grandfather (yes, I come from mixed stock, with the other side being Dems) are rolling over in their graves right now. Real cloth-coat Republicans, just like yours, AKM.
Great writing. This missive on the red leather jacket should be in a national magazine.
Great work! Funny and sad at the same time!
Once again I suggest we all flood the MSM with emails urging them to cover this issue. Also, SP gets all kind of coverage when she accuses Obama of palling around with terrorist but the MSM doesn’t utter a word about Todds membership in the Alaskan Independance Party. Include that in your emails. Sarah’s palling around with a separatist .
Here’s a link again to those email addresses

Wait a minute. Didn’t Nacy always wear cloth coats? But look how much she spent redecorating the WH and buying dishes!
I think I am closing down for the night and off to bed. Good night and I hate getting back to my computer in the morning and seeing all that I’ve missed!
Somehow I doubt that those clothes will make it to charity. Maybe it is all the lies that have been thrown at me but I am of ye little faith.
It never ends with this lady. How much does the private tutors and nannies cost? That amount would piss off the average working women in America that have to pay for child care.
where should I post this or am I just being paranoid? I think if this happens we all need to go out in the street Nov 5th and stand together. Sorry for the interruption. Now back to how do you dress a Caribou Barbie,
opps post is http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/police-prepare-for-unrest-2008-10-21_3.html
Obama is such a funny guy. I love this clip. Hope that I’ll see him in the flesh someday…

This campaign should be the end of Rick Davis (McCain’s campaign manager) and Steve Schmidt (McCain’s Chief Strategist) on the national scene. I can’t imagine a more poorly run campaign than this one.
One word.
Depreciation.
Donating the clothes does not make up for the depreciation in value. Tell me why doesn’t Palin have to pay taxes on the depreciated portion? And what happens if she ruins any of the clothes before they can be donated?
Palin’s noxious sweat glands and the saliva from the spittle-spraying Holy Roller right-wingers she hangs out with will have cut the value of those clothes to less than half their original value. God forbid Trig have a diaper malfunction when she is lugging him around like a rugby ball.
And just what LOOPHOLE allows the RNC to foot the bill for decking out the Great Whore of Babylon in jewels and fine cloth?
My brother in Oregon has vowed to throw rotten eggs injected with mustard at her if she ever shows her face in Portland again…..and he used to be a baseball pitcher!
Oops! That was Nancy
“Well, Michael Jackson will be relieved that his Thriller jacket will be coming back to him.”
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
That was HILARIOUS!!! I KNEW that jacket looked familiar….
Also, too, I also resent Cindy McCain’s 300,000 outfit that she looked kind of overdone in but at least it was bought with her own ill gotten gains (those of beer drinkers, myself included) and not the donations of taxpayers and donations…
Shove Maggot “That One” Hussein aka the problem child (11:16:31) :
The red leather jacket was a mistake for Sarah, but I’m not running for office, wonder if they would donate it to me! I look good in red even though I vote blue.
I read that “Joe the Plumber” made $40,000 last year.
Soooo, he would have to work almost four years to pay for her wardrobe and have nothing left for anything else to pay for that wardrobe.
BTW – my brother Joe the Pitcher also USED to be a Republican until yesterday.
…..this during the same week we learned that Barack’s Grandma did without new clothes to put him through school. Palin has recently argued against a second stimulus package because she is against Government spending (too Socialist?)….God bless her for her faith in the private sector! Let’s look on the bright side, how many less robocalls are we going to get, just because of the shiny (I loves them!) kinky black hooker boots?
The above comment made little sense and it’s morning and I haven’t been drinking–sorry….what I’m really trying to do is imitate the VP candidate–kind of sounds like her doesn’t it?
And that “shopping spree” didn’t do much good. I think they should have contacted Stacey and Clinton from What Not to Wear to teach Sarah Barracuda how to dress herself. All the RNC shopping spree did for Palin is go make her look like a Republican. Since she already looked like one, they really didn’t need to spend all that money.
Proud Community OrganizerWA (11:21:35) :
Somehow I doubt that those clothes will make it to charity. Maybe it is all the lies that have been thrown at me but I am of ye little faith.
Fear not, ye of little faith, those clothes will wend their way over to charitt, but they won’t have to wend their way too far, no doubt.
Charity begins at home, so either Willow or Todd will be the lucky beneficiaries (and watch Sarah’s 2008 tax return for the charitable deduction).
I think it kind of sucks that nobody in Alaska has yet realized — because it’s not been out on MSM anywhere — that her kids are being babysat by her “assistant” who is paid by the State of AK. Basically, everybody but the Palins are paying for those kids to be supervised — citizens of the US (thanks for your taxes, they get sent her as pork and for other projects & that partially funds many state of AK jobs), oil companies, residents of AK through their federal income taxes (NOT a bit of personal income tax paid here to go into state coffers).
So thanks, Americans & Alaskans, for watching the Palin children so that mummy & daddy can spend all of their time advancing themselves & pursuing their own means of entertainment (snowmobile racing! persecuting others! yay!).
If anyone is still up for making more phone calls, find here a list of numbers for Republican Senators and Congressmen/women who have remained silent on the subject of McCain’s horrible robo calls.

I went back to have a look and then read the comment section. Apparently, she was not wearing it during her speech, but it appeared when she was workin’ the crowd after. A great gift from an adorin’ fan!!!
I don’t think she had any intention of giving the clothes back either.

Anyone know what they do with the early votes?
hide ’em in a cupboard until Election day?
Count ’em and write the figures down on an envelope?
What if they counted them and they showed a mathematical, can’t be avoided result for Obama come Election day in say, West Virginia.
And someone leaked it. >:)

The $150,000 Sarah Palin spent on her clothing is a drop in the bucket.

Oh no, they spend plenty of $$ on clothing that little one themselves. I have it from very reliable sources that she has been known to show up to kid activities where local kids are in clean but outdoor-played-in clothes in fancy dresses, heels, and makeup (ON A 7 YEAR OLD). I guess that was on the one or two days they were actually in the Capital City. LOL This IS a child, after all, who wore a velvet cape and a tiara at her mother’s inauguration…

Hey to Mudflatters from Colorado…
Been reading this fabulous blog for a while… And all the great commentary as well…
I was at the Biden rally in Greeley Colorado yesterday, where BIden talked about the ticket focusing on restoring the middle class and restoring our standing among members of the world community. A Republican member of the Greeley City Council came out for Obama – Biden, and we also got to hear from Markey who, God willing, is going to defeat the horrible Musgrave…
But what really burns my sensibly coiffed blue jean derrière is the nerve of Palin thinking she can give an opinion about a Colorado issue. We are trying to pass Amendment 51 here to get DD off the years long waiting lists. It is a bi-partisan issue. It is a tax increase of 4 cents on $20 phased in over 2 years. There are currently about 9,700 adults and children on waiting lists for services within the next 2 years (and more if you project beyond 2 years, and many who have been on waiting years for much longer, since there are separate lists for separate programs). Former Colorado First Lady Frances Owens, a Republican, has called it a moral and human rights issue as well as a fiscal one… And yet when Palin was in Colorado on Monday (10/22), she spoke out against our Amendment 51! Unbelievable! Here’s a link to my post and to other posts, commentaries, links, and articles at the Denver Post’s forum if this peaks your interest: http://neighbors.denverpost.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=10560971&p=543107#p543107
Heh. The more I think about it, the more I think that the only plausible explanation for all this is “a conspiracy” (and I’m as anti-tinfoil-hat as you can possibly get). Somebody must have scoured the states for the single most incompetent ding-dong fraud in politics and slipped her in McCain’s nest by either deceit or outright threat. Really, there’s NO way that all these cleanly spaced public details about Palin are all due to oversight or accidents or stupid campaign managers. There’s just way too much of it, and the “discovery” of way too much of it is just way too neatly timed to fit the average American’s attention span.
Campaigns employ whole herds of highly skilled professionals in every category imaginable. I’m sure that if they don’t want something to become public, it doesn’t become public… and if they do aim for publicity of something or other, they know exactly how to get it out there for the best effect. They are NOT imbeciles.
So, what’s the drift? Where is this going? What’s the reason for all these never-before-used special effects in this odd movie? You gotta wonder.
Wonderful picture of your grandmother…I see her clearly, seated at her writing desk, carefully penning a letter. Going out in the windy weather, wearing her sturdy cloth coat. ……
MY grandmother of 93 is HORRIFIED at all the wasteful spending and hateful shenanigans going on today. She has always been careful with her money, (not tight, but frugal, thrifty even)
Why in the world would anyone need to spend enough money to buy a house on CLOTHES? With spending like that going on, it is no wonder our country is in so much debt. Money doesn’t grow on trees, you know?

___
One week AFTER??? I’ve heard this about other states too– that they only get counted if the election is “close”, but with so many Democrats voting early this year, couldn’t those early votes be outcome-changers??
SOMEBODY TALK ME DOWN!
AKM,
Thanks for reminding us all about real conservatism used to look like. I was raised by real conservatives. I maybe didn’t agree with their policy positions, but they were people of integrity and thrift who, like your grandmother, lived their values rather than just promoting them as a campaign slogan. I think that many of these “real” Republicans are quiet because they are simply speechless. They have been replaced by a “base” they neither recognize nor support–mean-spirited, hate-mongering pseudo-Christians–and are being lead by a neoconservative movement that is made up of rabid ideological bully boys. One thing that I really hope will come out of an Obama presidency is repair of the political division in this country. It is just as ridiculous for people to hate each other on the basis of politics as it is on the basis of race, religion or sexual preference. Karl Rove is, in my opinion, the single person most responsible for our current divided condition–but, of course, he would not have been able to succeed without the help of willing bullies. I hope that we on the left can rise above this nonsense and help heal our country.
Too many Republicans suffer in silence, hoping that their party will come around…
Republicans that don’t know where their party has gone, need to get involved. They need to run for office and take their party back from the corporate shills that run it now.
More and more progressive Democrats are running and trying to wrest the control of the Democratic party from the DLC Democrats — if Republicans want change in their party, they need to step up and get involved.
American Democracy will not survive with a single party government, Democrat or Republican, we need both for balance, but we need good statesmen who really do put country first instead of the partisan people that have turned the Republican party into what it is today.

Nana from AK: Sh!t! Just called the election office and found out that early votes are counted with absentee & mail-in votes! Guess they get counted eventually, before the 15-day grace period post-Nov 4th is up, before the count is certified, but that still bums me out! I want my vote to show up immediately! I want Alaska to be blue on Nov 4th!
Hmmmm, to vote early or not to vote early, that is the question…
Thanks for the tip Nana!
In AZ, mail-in votes are tabulated on election day like “real” votes. Honestly, if we didn’t have a Democratic governor and Sec of State here, I would not have trusted the mail-in system. As it is, I feel pretty confident all early and mail-in votes will be counted.

@Bea (11:41:45) :
No, they actually count them all. The delay is due to allowing for absentee ballots that were mailed in time (i.e. on or before election day) to arrive from out of state or overseas. That way they only have to put in one set of time to process all the early and absentee votes rather than counting a few each day as they come in.
Michele (11:42:15) :
I would add Newt Gingrich, Tom Delay and Dick Cheney for partial blame for the political division of the country as well.
Thanks AKM for another thoughtful and beautifully written post. The part about your grandma was especially touching, and it made me understand why I sometimes feel uncomfortable with the way our comments (including my own) occasionally over-trash Republicans. I like this part (below) best, because it made me realize that if we dems were the ones whose party was spinning out of control, we would suffer just so:
It is surprising in some ways, that the “real Republicans” have not mutinied. Some have, but there hasn’t been the mass exodus one would expect. Too many Republicans suffer in silence, hoping that their party will come around;
It behooves us, I think, to remember that all Republicans aren’t the race-baiting, lying, maniacal, deniacal, extremists that the media parades before us on a daily basis. Many are like your grandma, AKM, (and my own mother…rest her soul), “fiscally conservative, quietly religious, and kind-hearted.”
I’m not saying we shouldn’t vent or call a spade a spade or work up some righteous outrage over acts, views, words that are truly reprehensible. And I think, mostly, here at mudflats we do a good job of turning that outrage into constructive measures (like AKM’s gran sitting down and writing her letters, like us being a big part of the Michele Bachmann demise). And we certainly don’t want to relax our vigilance.
But from here on out I hose hotrod pledge to make sure my own critique and my own anger and my own harsh words are directed at the individual, group, or wrong-doing that deserves it…not at some mythic monster republican party that’s been rendered falsely homogeneous. When and if I attack Republicans (as a group), I want to imagine my mama and AKM’s grandmama in the room as part of that group and ask myself if I’m still willing to say the same things or use the same slurs.
Finally, I think it becomes all of us to take the lead from Barack on these things, when the crowd bood and hissed over mention of the Republican campaign. I quote: “No, no. We don’t need that. We just need to vote.” In two weeks Barack Obama will officially be the next president of the United States. And, as he has told us over and over and over, he will be ALL of our president, not just dems. And he’s counting on all of us to help him bring this deeply divided country together. I’m in.
Humbly submitted,
hose Hussein hotrod
P.S. Yikes. I hope I haven’t offended so much that you’ll all toss me into the flats with the trolls.

Re when early votes are counted–I checked Indiana and they are counted on the 4th.
Has everyone watched this? http://www.stealbackyourvote.org
It is sponsored by Robert Kennedy JR.
IN a nutshell:
1. DO NOT mail in a ballot.
2. VOTE early.
3. If you can’t vote early, check and recheck that you are registered. Go to your county registrar of voters website.
4. If an issue comes up at the poll, DO NOT take a provisional ballot. It will be tossed. Demand correction and if you are not helped, call 1-866-OURVOTE.
Nope Michelle, Sec. of State is elected office here… and when she reran for office last time —2006, all of the Official State Voter Info Packets had her name in really large letters all over the packets… (subliminal, much?)

I’ve got $50 here that says that the “charitable purpose” that those clothes go to is an auction to feather the RNC nest.
Perspective is fun… $150,000 is about 4 times my annual salary, and more than the house I bought 3 years ago cost.
______________________________________________________________________
I’ve got $50 here too…well, I did have, but I just donated it to the Obama campaign!
We are (already) the greatest! But as some other people mentioned above in this thread, let’s keep that money going to the campaign! Coming this far, and then losing in the last two weeks is completely and thoroughly unthinkable!
Please join me in donating a little more to Barack Obama’s campaign in honor of Palin’s new wardrobe!
And yes, perspective is fun! The house that my husband and I bought 4 years ago cost exactly 1/6 of that $150,000.00, including interest. And the last time I shopped for a business trip, I spent about $27 on myself. Of course, I was also helping my daughter shop for back to school, and she spent about $150 for the year at college.
We thought we were a wild and crazy pair, but I can see that we’ve got a ways to go!
Anyway, I’m serious, get a picture in your heads of that 150 grand for clothes and makeup – and you’ll be compelled to pass a few of your own hard earned dollars on to the Obama campaign for a better tomorrow. I agree that this is the best investment.

* with bonus spoiler on next Palin baby name!
Here’s the deal: even though SP has raised her income since being elected to office, she still doesn’t have enough money to run for vice president. She probably really stymied the powers that be in the party by not having the clothes for what was required of her.
I think it’s that simple. She cannot afford to run for a high office; she cannot afford the clothes for herself or her family. Another point about who is prepared to run for office. In our age of close-up media she needs to look the part, but cannot. Neither can her family. The part I find amusing is that they couldn’t keep it quiet. I mean, hell, the minute I saw Levi for the first time I joked to my friends that the plane that landed to get him had A NEW jacket on board.
When I saw that red leather jacket, I saw Cindy McCain taking her shopping. That red jacket is a Cindy McCain-style jacket. And when I finally saw the baby in a decent outfit, not crawlers, I knew someone took her shopping. The baby up until that point was always in sleepies.
Sarah is out of her league on every level. The clothes are nothing in the big view.
It’s pretty pathetic really.
I’m no longer able to be shocked by this woman or this campaign. I think that is a good thing… my system was beginning to suffer. I don’t mean my computer!
I want to put gum in her hair. Does that make me a bad person? 🙂
Looks like Jeff Larson (robocalls) was reimbursed for this shopping spree – a man of many hats apparently.

I still have “The Begatting of a President” on my storage here (a spoof by Orson Welles on Nixon’s election of ’68), which has the line (Nixon’s):
“… but she weareth a Republican cloth coat.”
Little did I know when I heard this first time what the extent of its meaning would be, one day !
Anyhoo, although they didn’t have the foresight to do the clothes thing off-the-record, privately, with a rich republican picking up the tab, and arranging for a private shoppier, they may be bright enough to depreciate the clothes so SP can buy her favs and not take away Piper’s new cute outfits.

Bachmann makes Palin look like Einstein.
My understanding is that the 150K was used to purchase clothing for her entire family. Her kids certainly aren’t going to be happy when they have to give them to charity.

And let’s not forget her expenses for makeup were more then what McCain spent for September McCain’s makeup payments $8,672.55

The RNC also tried to hide the expense for her voice lessons – listing them and “get out the vote” costs (no totals available yet)

Rick Davis, et al freaking out and spin, spin, spinning over this one!
Are you sure that wasn’t meant to be a humorous piece? I’m asking in all sincerity. Zamboni? HA! oops, too late, my drink has been spit out on my desk.

This is also the guy who gave deeply discounted rent to MN Senator Norm Coleman, a situation being investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee right now, thanks to an expose in the Mpls. Star Trib. What’s really interesting is that Coleman was under attack not long ago for accepting–wait for it–clothes from Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis from a GOP donor. Is Mpls Neiman Marcus just a GOP front operation or what? What is the deal with these people? Six and seven figure annual salaries and they can’t afford to clothe or shelter themselves?
Oh my. As I was scrolling through these posts I was wondering…Zamboni? Why are these people writing about a zamboni? AND THEN I read the article in the Post. It’s supposed to be a healthy thing to have a good belly laugh as often as possible. Well, I just got me about a week’s worth of “healthy”. Along with the thought that she considers herself an “intellectual”, naming a son Zamboni!?!? I just laughed my a** off. Quite a feat , as I am a plump 61 years old.
I bet McCain wishes she would just get on the same page with him. AP reporting on the Palin/James Dobson interview.

Ripley- (Among others goodies) I just bought a bag of Bazooka gum for the neighborhood Halloweeners. I’m willing to donate the bag to a good cause if you wouldn’t mind a partner in crime! 🙂
At least she wore the red leather jacket more than once. I’ve seen her wear it for at least one rally and she has it in an interview.
LibertyLover (12:19:20) :
This is my first AZ election and I was a bit surprised to receive a ‘voter’s guide’ in an official looking booklet that had a sample ballot in it–with only Republican names. I called one of the Dems running for Congress in my district and asked her why so many Republicans were running unchallenged. She came over (I know her), looked at the booklet and told me that it was most likely from the state RC (although it was not identified that way anywhere) and was missing names and info on all other candidates. I think there was clearly a subliminal attempt to sway the vote. If you didn’t know what was going on, you would associate the real ballot with the Republican names on the sample ballot and it might stick with you when you actually get into the voting booth. I was very surprised that the Repubs didn’t have to identify themselves as the originator of the “voter guide.” It looked like it came from the Sec of State’s office.
For a very amusing take on the 150 grand shopping spree, go to 23/6. com. Article titled Sarah Palin: Who(se House) are you Wearing?
From the Palin/Dobson interview:
“When we hear along the rope lines that people are interceding for us and praying for us, it’s our reminder to do the same, to put this all in God’s hands, to seek his perfect will for this nation, and to of course seek his wisdom and guidance in putting this nation back on the right track.”
Oh boy.
To Rope Hoover Palin aka Misfit:
Tell your Grandma what Mike Barnicle said on Morning Joe today, “I’ve been to Minneapolis and I can tell you that anybody who spent $75,000 there should have come out with a house.”
Seriously, I’m much more worried about the education of Sarah Palin’s children then I am about what she, or they, are wearing. Why aren’t those kids in school? Why was it OK for Bristol’s boyfriend to DROP OUT of high school!?! What kind of example is this for the rest of the country?
Those campaign managers of McCain just missed a great opportunity, as usual.
What if SP had gotten her new campaign wardrobe at K-Mart and Target, and had spent vastly less, say, $10,000 max. I am sure nobody would question that maybe new clothes are needed for a national campaign, but if she had done her shopping at stores that reflected the “Joe and Jane Sixpack” story line she is trying to reflect out she could have scored a major coup.
But no, the usual tin ear is displayed. No better demonstration could possibly have been invented to show people that the modern Repub’s care nothing, absolutely nothing, for anybody but the rich, and dressing richly is just what they are entitled to. My mom (speaking of generational values) was fuming about how likely some “5th avenue lady” took Palin out to all her favorite stores and just got her dressed up like all the other rich ladies. Thought nothing of it.
Anybody sitting in the ruins of their lives in this economy who persists in thinking these people care a single designer button about them is simply loony.
The thought that these people have a chance at getting in the white house. Garf.
The thing I want to know is, if they have been planning to donate the clothes to charity all along, what is their plan, God help us, if they win? Are the going to let her go back to fleece jackets and winter boots? Or were they just hoping no one would find out? And that she could keep the clothes? Oh I love the $300 purse that Piper is toting around! That is great!
disenchanted tore (12:53:47) : Hhahahah… START chewin’!!! I’m right there with ya! Also.
And I just saw the photo montage of some of the outfits and shoes….the red stillettos? Hey SWWNWN, click them together real hard now and repeat after me.
“There’s no place like Nome… there’s no place like Nome”…..
of course I meant SWWNBN

Obama Will Be One of The Greatest (and Most Loved) American Presidents
Great presidents are made great by horrible circumstances combined with character, temperament and intelligence. Like firemen, cops, doctors or soldiers, presidents need a crisis to shine.
Obama is one of the most intelligent presidential aspirants to ever step forward in American history. The likes of his intellectual capabilities have not been surpassed in public life since the Founding Fathers put pen to paper. His personal character is also solid gold. Take heart, America : we have the leader for our times.
I say this as a white, former life-long Republican. I say this as the proud father of a Marine. I say this as just another American watching his pension evaporate along with the stock market! I speak as someone who knows it’s time to forget party loyalty, ideology and pride and put the country first. I say this as someone happy to be called a fool for going out on a limb and declaring that: 1) Obama will win, and 2) he is going to be amongst the greatest of American presidents.
Obama is our last best chance. He’s worth laying it all on the line for.
This is a man who in the age of greed took the high road of community service. This is the good father and husband. This is the humble servant. This is the patient teacher. This is the scholar statesman. This is the man of deep Christian faith.
Good stories about Obama abound; from his personal relationship with his Secret Service agents (he invites them into his home to watch sports, and shoots hoops with them) to the story about how, more than twenty years ago, while standing in the check-in line at an airport, Obama paid a $100 baggage surcharge for a stranger who was broke and stuck. (Obama was virtually penniless himself in those days). Years later after he became a senator, that stranger recognized Obama’s picture and wrote to him to thank him. She received a kindly note back from the senator. (The story only surfaced because the person, who lives in Norway , told a local newspaper after Obama ran for the presidency. The paper published a photograph of this lady proudly displaying Senator Obama’s letter).
Where many leaders are two-faced; publicly kindly but privately feared and/or hated by people closest to them, Obama is consistent in the way he treats people, consistently kind and personally humble. He lives by the code that those who lead must serve. He believes that. He lives it. He lived it long before he was in the public eye.
Obama puts service ahead of ideology. He also knows that to win politically you need to be tough. He can be. He has been. This is a man who does what works, rather than scoring ideological points. In other words he is the quintessential non-ideological pragmatic American. He will (thank God!) disappoint ideologues and purists of the left and the right.
Obama has a reservoir of personal physical courage that is unmatched in presidential history. Why unmatched? Because as the first black contender for the presidency who will win, Obama, and all the rest of us, know that he is in great physical danger from the seemingly unlimited reserve of unhinged racial hatred, and just plain unhinged ignorant hatred, that swirls in the bowels of our wounded and sinful country. By stepping forward to lead, Obama has literally put his life on the line for all of us in a way no white candidate ever has had to do. (And we all know how dangerous the presidency has been even for white presidents).
Nice stories or even unparalleled courage isn’t the only point. The greater point about Obama is that the midst of our worldwide financial meltdown, an expanding (and losing) war in Afghanistan, trying to extricate our country from a wrong and stupidly mistaken ruinously expensive war in Iraq, our mounting and crushing national debt, awaiting the next (and inevitable) al Qaeda attack on our homeland, watching our schools decline to Third World levels of incompetence, facing a general loss of confidence in the government that has been exacerbated by the Republicans doing all they can to undermine our government’s capabilities and programs… President Obama will take on the leadership of our country at a make or break time of historic proportions. He faces not one but dozens of crisis, each big enough to define any presidency in better times.
As luck, fate or divine grace would have it (depending on one’s personal theology), Obama is blessedly, dare I say uniquely, well-suited to our dire circumstances. Obama is a person with hands-on community service experience, deep connections to top economic advisers from the renowned University of Chicago where he taught law, and a middle-class background that gives him an abiding knowledgeable empathy with the rest of us. As the son of a single mother, who has worked his way up with merit and brains, recipient of top-notch academic scholarships, the peer-selected editor of the Harvard Law Review and, in three giant political steps to state office, national office and now the presidency, Obama clearly has the wit and drive to lead.
Obama is the sober voice of reason at a time of unreason. He is the fellow keeping his head while all around him are panicking. He is the healing presence at a time of national division and strife. He is also new enough to the political process so that he doesn’t suffer from the terminally jaded cynicism, the seen-it-all-before syndrome afflicting most politicians in Washington . In that regard we Americans lucked out. It’s as if having despaired of our political process we picked a name from the phone book to lead us and that person turned out to be a very man we needed.
Obama brings a healing and uplifting spiritual quality to our politics at the very time when our worst enemy is fear. For eight years we’ve been ruled by a stunted fear-filled mediocrity of a little liar who has expanded his power on the basis of creating fear in others. Fearless Obama is the cure. He speaks a litany of hope rather than a litany of terror.
As we have watched Obama respond in a quiet reasoned manner to crisis after crisis, in both the way he has responded after being attacked and lied about in the 2008 campaign season, to his reasoned response to our multiplying national crises, what we see is the spirit of a trusted family doctor with a great bedside manner. Obama is perfectly suited to hold our hand and lead us through some very tough times. The word panic is not in the Obama dictionary.
America is fighting its ‘Armageddon’ in one fearful heart at a time. A brilliant leader with the mild manner of an old-time matter-of-fact country doctor soothing a frightened child is just what we need. The fact that our ‘doctor’ is a black man leading a hitherto white-ruled nation out of the mess of its own making is all the sweeter and raises the Obama story to that of moral allegory.
Obama brings a moral clarity to his leadership reserved for those who have had to work for everything they’ve gotten and had to do twice as well as the person standing next to them because of the color of their skin. His experience of succeeding in spite of his color, social background and prejudice could have been embittering or one that fostered a spiritual rebirth of forgiveness and enlightenment. Obama radiates the calm inner peace of the spirit of forgiveness.
Speaking as a believing Christian I see the hand of a merciful God in Obama’s candidacy. The biblical metaphors abound. The stone the builder rejected is become the cornerstone… the last shall be first… he that would gain his life must first lose it… the meek shall inherit the earth…
For my secular friends I’ll allow that we may have just been extraordinarily lucky! Either way America wins.
Only a brilliant man, with the spirit of a preacher and the humble heart of a kindly family doctor can lead us now. We are afraid, out of ideas, and worst of all out of hope. Obama is the cure. And we Americans have it in us to rise to the occasion. We will. We’re about to enter one of the most frightening periods of American history. Our country has rarely faced more uncertainty. This is the time for greatness. We have a great leader. We must be a great people backing him, fighting for him, sacrificing for a cause greater than ourselves.
A hundred years from now Obama’s portrait will be placed next to that of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt. Long before that we’ll be telling our children and grandchildren that we stepped out in faith and voted for a young black man who stood up and led our country back from the brink of an abyss. We’ll tell them about the power of love, faith and hope. We’ll tell them about the power of creativity combined with humility and intellectual brilliance. We’ll tell them that President Obama gave us the gift of regaining our faith in our country. We’ll tell them that we all stood up and pitched in and won the day. We’ll tell them that President Obama restored our standing in the world. We’ll tell them that by the time he left office our schools were on the mend, our economy booming, that we’d become a nation filled with green energy alternatives and were leading the world away from dependence on carbon-based destruction. We’ll tell them that because of President Obama’s example and leadership the integrity of the family was restored, divorce rates went down, more fathers took responsibility for their children, and abortion rates fell dramatically as women, families and children were cared for through compassionate social programs that worked. We’ll tell them about how the gap closed between the middle class and the super rich, how we won health care for all, how crime rates fell, how bad wars were brought to an honorable conclusion. We’ll tell them that when we were attacked again by al Qaeda, how reason prevailed and the response was smart, tough, measured and effective, and our civil rights were protected even in times of crisis…
We’ll tell them that we were part of the inexplicably blessed miracle that happened to our country those many years ago in 2008 when a young black man was sent by God, fate, or luck, to save our country. We’ll tell them that it’s good to live in America where anything is possible. Yes we will.
So Sarah says to James Dobson, “putting this in God’s hands, that the right thing for America will be done at the end of the day on Nov. 4.”
Well, the right thing for America is electing Barack Obama! So I can actually agree with Sarah about one thing (and one thing only!)~

McCain Camp Raises Bittergate In Latest Robocall
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/22/mccain-camp-raises-bitter_n_136972.html
Can the skirts get any tighter for a “so-called” Christian woman? It has become increasinglyobvious that all those average Joe-sixpacks & plummers are thinkin’ with the wrong head!
Hey to Forty Watt Hussein, Kittitians for Obama, and all the rest of the mudflatters for hearing me out on the local Colorado DD issue. Sometimes I cannot believe the unreality of the world we are living in and how the Republican ticket is so hypocritical and out of touch…
BTW, I also believe in green-thinking thrift store shopping… but would be willing to expend a little carbon to burn Palin donations in a bonfire. At my last trip to the Goodwill, I scored an unexpired tri-color print-cartridge for my ink jet, a lime-colored Bill Blass top, and a red chili pepper T-shirt all for $10. But, I turned around and spent $15 for a pink and black Obama shirt for “cute stuff attention-monkey” at the rally yesterday (AKA the wheelchair princess of just about everything, key words “just about”, AKA the Halloween energizer bunny, using the wheels for the drum – get the picture?), and I got busted by camera radar for speeding and that’s a dreaded $40 ticket… So, did I break even there, or can I get bailed out like a call-in radio show did for “Joe the Plumber”? ( http://www.1190kex.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=123543&article=4437677 )
SO typical of Republican strategy to bail out their celebrities. Marilyn Musgrave did it here. Find one person, like a veteran who sustained significant war injuries or, a person with a child with multiple disabilities, and then make them a celebrated cause for a favorite issuewhile screwing the rest of the individuals similarly situated.
Also, on the Denver Post forum I frequent, I started a thread on helping our veterans a while back – lots of stuff on PTSD, among other issues. But I have to give credit to another poster who calls themselves “awakenedcitizen” and who has lots of great links on McCain’s voting record, all in one place, here: http://neighbors.denverpost.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=9124957&p=532835#p532835
At any rate, since I have veterans all around me in my family and extended family, I came home from the Biden rally yesterday with a Veterans for Obama card which is now proudly displayed in the picture window of my home…
(P.S. So nice of folks to not flame me for calling Monday 10/22 in my prior post rather than 10/20… so, my day of the week math is not perfect even though, unlike some people I have to try and live within my budget…)
fawnskin hussein mudpuppy (10:35:34) :
i would love to hear some outrage/disgust from of the joe-jane sixpacks, or joe the plumber, or joe blow, re this wardrobe malfuction.
how can anyone who extolls fiscal conservatism condone the flambouncy of dressing up of swwnbn.
I’ve just come from a chat room with a lot of Republicans. They are very busy defending her and the expenditure on clothing. One said “Do you expect her to live out of a suit case and buy from K-mart” another tried bait and switch by comparing her clothing expenditures to Obama’s spending $500,000 on a coming rally and advertising. Mostly the defense goes along the lines of ‘if you’ve got it , flaunt it’ There isn’t any, repeat any dismay at the cost, none.
Hi all,
I’m back from a short trip to Florida! Thanks Kim for the Sarasota Bridge pictures. They are truly inspiring. You have to see that bridge to realize how big it really is.
I needed that inspiration. Today as I drove to buy groceries I saw a home made ‘Obama for President’ sign that had been defaced with the word ‘terrorist’ graffitied in red across the sign.
This is scary stuff. Our country is in real danger and some folks just don’t get it. If McLame is elected we will all be livng in a police state with Kaki and Blackwater as the enforcers. I just hope I can get to Canada quick.
I guess all of us here on the mudflats will be in the concentration camps together.
BTW, I too had a pair of ‘those come f#*k me shoes’….when I was 25! She seems a bit ‘long in the tooth’ for such things now.
Wonderful as Dust Chinstrap is, I just had to try Zamboni out!
BUWAHAHAHAHAHA!
*wipes tears*
Oh man, can you imagine four years of this in Washington DC?
OMG, OMG.
Anyone watching Hardball right now? HOLY COW, Matthews just went apes%%t on Nancy Pfotenhauer. He’s going to be in trouble for this bit, but it was a CLASSIC.
The sweet smell of victory!!
Five days after Rep. Michele Bachmann went on a McCarthy-esque rant suggesting Barack Obama was unpatriotic and urging the major newspapers of the country to investigate anti-American sentiment in Congress, the national Republican political parties are running for cover.
Two sources aware of ad buys in Minnesota say that the National Republican Congressional Committee is pulling its media purchases from Bachmann’s race.
Here’s the whole article:

I suspect the matter has something to do with the exponential rate from the ‘Tower of Babel’ babbling of those that think of themselves as anti-abortion league members and how they think there is no other way to elect a Supreme Court judge that will overturn the current law. Ms. Palin seems to appeal just enought to this unbalanced one-issue thinking for rational Americans to want to squander their sacred rite to vote. Anyway, THAT is what some independents are saying as to their rationalization. Whether that really is the issue, remains to be seen, someday in the future in the analysis. As for abortions, it was mentioned in the final debate in logical terms, and I see no reason that if Mr. Obama is elected, that the decent, as well as sane and fair matter of increased educational resources will be more readily available to all in society to the intent of reducing occasion of unwanted pregnancy and ultimately decreased induced abortion rates. Whereas, with Mr. McCain, I cannot see past ‘same ol’, same ol’ and graft, and corruption with Ms. Palin.
It is sad, and smarmy (as I recall the noise from the last election about how cute that PM of England was getting together with GWB) to hear these fanatics justify all their hopes and dreams for the future based on the flavor of the ice cream that Mr. McCain and Ms. Palin are dishing out or ‘selling’ today.
My husband (resident alien) was in LA where the Tom Bradley effect was seen, and he says it was not pretty.
OMG. Matthews is gonna get fired. He’s pretty much had it with the Palin nonsense and he is not able to contain himself anymore. Many jaw dropping moments and lots of giggling.
hey Kim in Florida..those pics are awesome..they made me cry too…
I am sooo excited for you guys in America….If only we could have voted too..
..Imagine I have friends who are traveling to the US next weekend because they want to be in on the action and witness history in its making….Damn..I have no vacation leave left so I’m stuck here..but we will be watching and are organizing our big election watch party…
Love all of you mudflatters…Love Obama (really bad) ..Love Joe Biden…love all the good people in America..(notice I said good).
upnorth- Thank you for that. I hate that woman.
Hardball update–Brian Williams and Chuck Todd (both execs at NBC and therefore, Matthews’ bosses) are on now trying to calm things down a bit. Williams interviewed Palin and McCain today. Todd says there is NO chemistry between McCain and Palin and it is clear that there is negative energy in the room with them and they do not like each other. Hmmm….

I loved the way this was written this morning and hoped it would show up at Daily Kos, somehow….. Yeah!!!
Quoting AKM:
“Too many Republicans suffer in silence, hoping that their party will come around; that they will spontaneously stop lying, race-baiting, subverting the constitution, and spending money like drunken sailors who like women in red leather.”
I am going to be very disappointed in President Obama if he does nothing to stop this:
“TSA/DHS has decided to take advantage of their lack of Congressional oversight, and ram through most of the key components of SecureFlight, and there is nothing anyone can do to stop them – including Congress.
SecureFlight is being designed as an informational loop-back to RealID. In a nutshell, you will be assigned an ID ‘number’, which will be connected to your PNR and tied to your name, DOB, address, social security number and other data points collected.
This data will then be tied to your RealID-secured license or other ‘national ID’ card you will be carrying. In short, there will be a number which will follow you everywhere, and be tied to all of your daily activities which could be tied to any of these data points, including credit card transactions, bank account activity, air travel, car travel (where you gas up, where you rent a car, etc.), etc. etc. etc.
The end game? The ability of DHS to create a comprehensive dossier on each and every one of us, following us through our daily lives, is becoming closer to reality.
The civil liberties issues aside, why should you care? DHS wants the next generation of RealID cards to include mandatory RFID chips – so while walking down the street, someone with a radio receiver tuned to these chips can strip off all your personal information, including name, address, social and your ID number – gee, I wonder what an identity thief could do with that information. I also wonder what those ‘trustworthy’ folks at DHS will do with all your personal information – especially if you’re someone like a politician, wealthy or a celebrity.
I’m not sure how much effect it would have, but you could try ‘poisoning’ the database with random entries for your DOB and address and even social, but if we get to a point where everyone is either on the NFL or selectee list unless removed by the ‘purity’ of your data, then that could cause other complications for travelers. It would, however, leave DHS with a bunch of un-trackable garbage in their database.”

Another Hardball update – Sara Palin says she will release her medical records….okie dokie…
On an NBC interview tonight Sarah Palin says that Obama’s willingness to talk to world leaders without preconditions shows his ill-conceivedness. I’m just a college graduate so I don’t know everything but is ill-conceivedness really a word? Has she been taking lessons from George W?
Hey to Sparky too. Thanks for the welcome.
Slow typist and slow reader here… Actually I’m in Ft. Collins (Biden spoke in Greeley and Palin in Loveland), so I guess this is a post from Northern Colorado to reflect the area’s diversity (I guess, since it’s about even in the Obama v. the McCain signs on my street… and yes, I voted early by mail, but the other side is doing too – nothing like a paper trail)

VOTE OBAMA-BIDEN. We certainly did, on Monday.
Ok speaking of being two mouthed….listen carefully to this video…
John MCCain is a socialist.,,,ha ha ..I told you all so…It always takes one to know another…
When Palin takes control of America’s nuclear arsenal and cleanses God’s good earth of Muslims, New Yorkers, San Francisco and Democrats, none of you will care what she wore when she took back America from the brink of Islamofascism, from the horror of Obama and Osama’s plans to transform America into a Muslim Caliphate!
Kneel and thank God that the Prophet Sarah has arrived to take back America!
Praise!
It’s pretty sad when you compare our guy to the well-funded palin:

@FalconOfTheAdirondacks
LOL!
Can someone up there in Alaska explain to me…if Alaska gets about $555 per capita in earmarks where as the average in the country is about $34 per capita…how can Palin consider herself a fiscal conservative.
There seems to be money to burn in Alaska. Even if earmarks for Alaska were reduced by about 93% they would still be above the nation’s average. Doesn’t sound like a very mavericky governor to me.
Love you guys in Alaska. Keep up the good work.
no such word as “ill-conceivedness” or even “conceivedness” according to http://www.dictionary.com…why doens’t this suprise me???!!!!!

Ok caught up on some of the comments.
Sarah Palin is actually the sister of George Bush that they gave up for adoption.
They hired a voice coach for Sarah? Well that person should be fired!
As far as the $150,000 for clothing I hear she is just going to bill it all to Alaska!
Last but not least I wish I had seen Chris Matthews loose it on the giraffe. Damn I gave up his show because he kept asking silly and asinine questions and lately he has been on his game. I hope someone got that on video!
I would like to say a great big Thank YOU to all of you who update us here about the TV shows I don’t get. I mean I don’t receive… although I often don’t get it either!
Michelle, thanks for the hardball info. I can’t get to a tv right now, so I’m enjoying your play by play. Can’t wait to watch it later!
Hey folks..Is John McCain just a big hypocrite…he sure is two mouthed…
Look at this video..it shows Johnny as a socialists…I knew all along he was..It always takes one to know the other….

Now that they’ve had a chance to clean them up a bit….
is ill-conceivedness really a word?
Not in the english language but it may be in whatever language she speaks. You know, the same one that includes the word nukuler 😛
Hi Nisperos!
I’m in southern Yuma County Colorado, 183 miles from Fort Collins, where my daughter is a happy journalism student at CSU! I had only been to Fort Collins a few times before she started school there. Now I get to go on a regular basis, and I love to visit there. It’s a beautiful town.

@upnorth MN aka hose Hussein hotrod, thank you for the reminder that not all Republicans are bad people. Thanks to AKM as well. It’s hard to remember that at times.
I bought a slice of organic, homemade blueberry pie today. All the talk of pie got me hungry. Surprisingly, it was just ok. The crust was pretty good though. I wish they had had sweet potato pie.
“Dugg” it! Come on friends-let’s get this story to the mainstream!
I’ve been calling it a train wreck for weeks now, and now we’re in the phase of a train wreck in which the noise is louder and cars derailing more frequent.
Its hard to hear anything else but the screeching crashing breaking sounds.
Time will tell if the campaign will completely self destruct before Nov 4th, or whether the inertia of McCain’s choice will roll slide tumble and finally grind to a halt further down the track.
McCain’s VP pick certainly is a high maintenance – uh – female pit bull that needs cleaning up after…

Hello mudpuppies,
Don’t know if you got to see Chris Matthews today but wow was it classic. He went OFF on that aweful Nancy I can’t pronounce or spell her last name person from the McCain camp. Wow it felt good to see her stumped and speechless, she could not spin SP’s description of the VP job. I wonder if he will get in trouble because of that? Maybe we should send letters to MSNBC in support. Thoughts?????
…….Hardball is on AGAIN at 7pm et
Ms. Palin should be invited to take her clothes on a walking tour of Newark, NJ, or Watts in LA — or any number of similar locales.
I wonder if anybody’s tried to jam her wardrobe (or her puffed-up head) through a needle’s eye lately — if you know what I’m saying.
$150,000.00??? That’s just obscene. And they want to call themselves the party of “Joe the Plumber” or “Sam the unlicensed wannabe Plumber”.
I told my mom how I like to walk through Saks just to look at the price tags. The only way I could afford anything to wear would be if I hit the lottery and had CindyLouWho money to spend.

I apologise if someone has already posted this incredible flip flop from the McCainster as seen on the Daily Show last night re socialism. This goes to show ya how stupid this whole issue is in this campaign. At the end of this segment watch the high schoolers question and the incredible answer form McNutsy.

AP poll has Obama ONE POINT OUT.
HUH?????
Just saw this in another blog – thought you might like it…
I ran across this at a anti-Obama forum’ thought it’s worth shareing’ Sonia Kermaz wrote:
While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, who’s hand was caught in the gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Palin and her bid.
The old rancher said, “Well, ya know, Palin is a ‘Post Turtle’.”
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a ‘Post Turtle’ was.
The old rancher said, “When you’re driving down a country road you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a ‘Post Turtle’.”
The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor’s face so he continued to explain. “You know she didn’t get up there by herself, she don’t belong up there, and she don’t know what to do while she’s up there, and you just wonder what kind of dummy put her up there to begin with.” Isn’t American Humor a wonderous thing……
When hardball comes on at 7:00 PM you Mudflaters should watch when Caribou Barbi mentions ill-conceivedness. McAged doesn’t bat an eye. It’s like he uses that word all of the time.
Crazy In Alaska (13:03:22) :
The thing I want to know is, if they have been planning to donate the clothes to charity all along, what is their plan, God help us, if they win? Are the going to let her go back to fleece jackets and winter boots? Or were they just hoping no one would find out? And that she could keep the clothes? Oh I love the $300 purse that Piper is toting around! That is great!
That purse may be $300.00 hot on the streets! That purse costs close to $1,000.00 if not more. I dream of owning one of those one day.
Hardball again. So Matthews has calmed down, but he is clearly tired of pretending Sarah Palin is anything but a terrible joked played on the American people. He is enraged at her misunderstanding of the role of the Vice President in relation to the Senate and said, “the campaign had the time to drag her through Saks and Neiman Marcus, but no one can take the time to educate her about the Constitution?” He’s taking no prisoners on this topic and he has pretty much lost his graciousness about Palin. Joan Walsh, the editor of Salon, said she would have “welcomed a $150,000 charge for tutoring” for Palin (ouch).
One really funny thing–when Matthews was talking to Pfotenhauer he actually lost his temper with the Democrat invited to be her foil. He said “Take a stand! Are you just going to sit there and let them hang themselves?” The Dem guy (can’t remember his name) pretty much shrugged like “yeah–why not?” It was pretty funny. Nancy Pfotenhauer was literally clucking and huffing.
@ phoebe (11:04:20) :
“I vote to let Piper keep her clothes, seems mean to take clothes away from a child and as we know she does have a little temper, but I’ve got my eyes of that little red leather jacket….wonder what size it is.”

That was another classic. Apparently her decision to release her medical records was news to the McCain campaign and they were none too happy with her offering to do that on a national news interview without getting ‘permission.’ I think she is, what is that phrase she likes, “going off the reservation.” This could get very interesting.

Great article! Thanks for posting it.
I know I’m late – and someone has probably covered this, but aren’t there some tax consequences here. Seems like Sarah is always working on the fringes of this issue. One day it is free travel for her family or pay for living in her home, and the next it is free cloths. Even if you donate them (which I’m sure will piss her off) , you cannot give them the same value that they had when they were given to her new. I suppose the RNC will say they were just on loan – like from one friend to another – but this sure smells of a potential problem. Hard to argue that your employer should provide you with a clothing allowance when there is no evidence that this job would qualify for such an allowance.
Has anyone officially turned her into the IRS for the income omissions from her tax returns (you know – the anonymous tip hot line to turn in your neighbor who is cheating on their taxes)?
There appears to be no limit to the things that the republicans are willing to sweep under the rug when it comes to Sarah Palin. Seems like walking on that rug is going to become pretty treacherous at some point.
“is ill-conceivedness really a word?” It could be a Freudian slip by someone with pregnancy issues on her mind.

I don’t get Hardball, et al either. You can catch it online at msnbc.msn.com. It may take an hour or two to get it, but I can always watch Chris, Keith and Rachel the same evening–I’m in Oregon, so same time zone as you. This race is just so amazeeeen
Abuse of Power?? *yawn* why get power if you can’t use (abuse) it
Shooting wolves from the air?? Kill baby kill
Obama is a terrorist/socialist?? Booorrrring
Lying about your plans (and your opponents)?? Who cares! They all do it.
I can see Russia from my house?? Good foreign policy experience.
I was on the PTA?? More executive experience.
What does the VP do?? Anything (s)he wants
Spent $150,000 on clothes?? OFF WITH HER HEAD
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t care what brings them down – as long as it happens. But after all the issues that seem actually relevant to the campaign and ability to serve in office – it might be the clothes that makes (or breaks) the woman. doohhh
Lawrence O’Donnel just mentioned on MSNBC that the clothing purchases may not be legal and that he has never heard of such a thing being paid for and recorded in FEC reports. I hate to say that I hope it is illegal so she can get in more trouble. Does that make me a bad person. I guess we can add Fashiongate to the list of gates.

trolling, me thinks.
Hey Lighthouse! I’ve actually been to Yuma… someone there once told me a story of working in the WPA. I think I had cherry pie at one of the 2 places to eat, maybe? Scratching my head ’cause we are talking maybe 15 yrs ago. (Wow, where did that story come from? Guess I’m reflecting on stories of old-timers as I had a 93 y/o neighbor pass away recently, funeral on Friday, and he told great stories…) People keep telling me they have kids at CSU; last one was a reporter from Montana… Great to see other Coloradoans on the Mudflats here…
Yup, Ft. Collins is a pretty sweet place. Been here about 7 yrs (2nd time in CO, 1st time in Ft. Collins). Had the Chamber speech yet? Lots to do here; urban and outdoor recreation, quick to Denver when ya want, but not all the regular hassle… Consider moving or retiring here? Anyone else? Met someone through Craig’s list who used to be a brewer in Alaska and now runs a home brew shop in old town Fort Collins…
DarleenMB (14:02:32) :
You can take some Pepto–the poll’s already been discredited. 45% of the respondents were Evangelical or born again, opposed to only 23% in the general population. AP is owned by 5 major corporations and is notorious for leaning right. A Washington Post poll from today has Obama at 54% and McCain at 39%. NBC/WSJ also has Obama ahead by 10 points. The AP poll is a clear outlier. It’s kind of good, though, for people to think it’s close so they don’t get complacent about campaigning or voting.

Oh my god, Chris Mathews is possessed! Go Chris, go Chris, go Chris! Stupid Nancy Phethrthoerthor.pf or whatever her name is. She’s an idiot.
I had to share that I just came back from voting. As I was making my Obama-Biden selection – I really started to cry. I went out and got in my car and on the radio was John Mellencamp’s “Little Pink Houses” – right at this spot:
Well theres a young man in a t-shirt
Listening to a rockin rollin station
Hes got a greasy hair, greasy smile
He says: lord, this must be my destination
cuz they told me, when I was younger
Boy, youre gonna be president
But just like everyting else, those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went
Chorus:
Oh but aint that america for you and me
Aint that america were someting to see baby
Aint that america, home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me
—- so I continued crying all the way home. I feel like I was voting for me AND my late father, who would have been as thrilled over Obama as the rest of us. Ain’t that America!
But Chris! But Chris! But Chris! Joe Biden Joe Biden Joe Biden! She’s an idiot.
Can someone post the picutre of the $300 bag Piper has.
Bec, Thanks for sharing. You brought tears to my eyes, too. Also ; )
Camie – here is the Louis Vuitton bag — my third post of this “priceless” pic.
I’m not a Vuitton shopper – but I’m pretty sure it was a lot more than $300. No?
Zamboni? Really? I’ve ridden on one on the air — even scraped a little — as my son used to play hockey. It was fun BUT to name a child that is just wrong on so many levels….
Hi Scott Palin,
Thanks for the Humor! Best laugh of the day. 🙂

Yes, Nisperos, Yuma is pretty rural. It’s also 44 miles north of my house and we refer to a trip there as “going to town”, since the “town” I actually live in has about 40 people in it!
My uncle (the coolest 85 year old Democrat from the state of Minnesota) came through last night and we ate THE BEST cherry pie in the world for supper. He tells great stories too! (this may be off topic!)
I really do enjoy Fort Collins, and it’s a great place for my country daughter to learn how to drive in traffic! It took her several months her first year at school, but now she’s zipping all over town. I spend a lot of time in downtown Denver too, so when I say that Fort Collins feels like a small town, I’m not just comparing it to my town of 40. (it’s all relative!)
Voter tips:
DON’T wear any buttons or candidate stuff.
DO take a hankie.
DO – go celebrate afterwards!
Bec Hussein in Illinois,
Thank you for sharing that. Oct. 27th, I will be voting in my county in GA. I think I might cry too…I’ve already started reading your story.

I’m just saying that those plastic faces and plastic smiles are identical!!!
Just a side comment that really means nothing – it just popped into my head today watching Nancy sputter…

LOL….I’m sure the Goodwill will accept the clothes, but as for the rest….they don’t accept ALL donations.
Nancy Pufflehump was spluttering at the end with that demonic smile on her face. Chris was the best when he kept saying condescendingly, “You tried your best, Nancy.” I think his job is fine.

Bec Hussein in Illinois–
Thank you so much for that!!
I just read on MSN that the McCain camp, encouraged by this bogus AP poll that has them within 2 points, is now thinking they will in fact drag out the Jeremiah Wright stuff and more. I know Barack can take it.
But if you live in a state that allows early voting, please encourage everyone you know to do so. Not that a late down and dirty surprise will sway good dems… but it would be so great if Barack had as many votes as possible–including those key independent votesbefore the new sh.., whatever it is, hits the fan.

I’m pretty sure that someone from Canada’s CBC radio show “As It Happens” is lurking here. They have consistently been hitting the issues profiled here.
Tonight, there was a comment on the phenomenal expenses the RNC has incurred because of Palin. Favourite line: “Ask not what your country can do for your updo, ask what your updo can do for your country.”
Another great thing happened just before I voted — I went into the political office for our Congressman Bill Foster — to get a yard sign. I see them all over. Bill Foster is a successful businessman and also a scientist, who worked here at Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory. He ran for former Speaker Dennis Hastert’s seat – and won the special election a few months ago (when Denny decided to retire early). He is now running for the full term – against a Repug who has tried and failed to get elected to numerous positions (including Gov.)
Foster hit the ground running in DC and the Dems embraced him immediately. We need to keep a brain like his – and a scientist in Congress to help combat the “Global Warming is a Hoax” folks like Bachmann.
I was so surprised to open the door to his office and see the place packed with volunteers. Foster was there being interviewed by ABC, and I met a young woman who had packed up her belongings and come out to IL from NY to work on his campaign. I was so impressed. I told her about Mudflats and so many of us helping with donations to other congressional elections around the country. Ain’t that America — too!

Watching the Brian Williams interview where McCain is defending the pick of SP where he says that he is absolutely proud of her and his choice of her because among other things she has a son fighting in the war and if that doesn’t make her qualified he doesn’t know what does. Oh and the regular stuff about how she built a pipeline, took on her own party, lowered taxes, etc, etc.
I hate the fact that now the MSM is jumping at the opportunity to grant them interviews when all McCain has done for the last couple of months is complain about the MSM. They are a bunch of cowards!!!! They shouldn’t grant them any interviews they are only running to any channel right now because they don’t have any money to advertise. Chris Matthews has been around Washington a long time! He’s, obviously frustrated that we have a VP candidate who has absolutely no understanding of the constitution or the job of VP.

When I saw Sarah in that red leather jacket she wore in an interview my first thought was, “Oh man, Michael Jackson looked so much better in his red leather jacket than you do. Beat it, Sarah!!!!!”
Does that mean Willow’s gray prison dress with the red belt was actually new and picked out for her? I though she was being punished, having to wear something so dowdy and ugly.
@judi hussein that one Obama, “But, Chris, you can’t tell me that the VP wouldn’t be discussing issues with the Senate!” Cackle cackle grin grin grin. “You can’t tell me Joe Biden wouldn’t discuss–”
Chris: Changing the topic, changing the topic.
That was great, too, the way he kept saying Nancy Peppermint was changing the topic. Man, Chris was fierce. I have never seen him so worked up. Ten to one he absolutely loses it before election day.
Just had a good little cry for my late Senator Paul Wellstone. Hillary was in Minneapolis today, stumping with Al Franken. Here’s what the mayor of Minneapolis had to say.
Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said it was four years ago that he attended the memorial for Sen. Paul Wellstone, who died in a plane crash and whose position Franken’s opponent, Sen. Norm Coleman, now fills.
“That’s Paul Wellstone’s seat. Norm Coleman has got it,” Rybak said. “Go get it.”

@upnorth MN aka hose Hussein hotrod, I was living in the East Bay when that happened. I wanted to be home so badly. It was very lonely. Man, has it been that long? He was a decent, caring, passionate human being and a great senator. Coleman isn’t fit to shine his shoes.
Guess who was blocking the parking aisle at my grocery store today (Mississippi Market}? Amy Klobuchar. She was getting out of her car (one of her minions was driving) and yapping on her cell phone. I had three cars behind me, and she and her entourage weren’t moving. So I honked. Amy, good job you’re doing, but I gotta get me some pie!
“I like the red leather jacket alot, but what’s underneath it is a problem”. Best quote from the Chris Matthews interview. I saw it once, but had to watch it again for more laughs.
asianHusseingrrl-
I am so proud of Amy Klobuchar (but you’re right about blocking access to pie… ahem). She’s doing so well in Washington and really making a good name for herself in the Senate. Wellstone would be proud. There are some who think she’ll go far fast. I don’t exactly know what is meant by this…but if she does, I know she’ll keep her head and her integrity. Love that grrl.

We can only hope people realize she’s a pretty unreal Alaskan, one who is simply skimming the gravy off our hard-earned Alaskan mystique to mix with her varnished nonsense.
(And yes, some Alaskans do sell varnished moose turds, also.)”
@upnorth MN aka hose Hussein hotrod, she HAS done well as the first female senator from MN in….well a long time. But pie! Come on, people. You can’t get between a woman and her pie!
You know, for every idiot whack-job we have here in MN (Bachmann), we have one on the other side (Klobuchar).
Bad–Norm, ‘blinding white teeth’ Coleman. Good–Keith Ellison (first Muslim representative, ever).
Then there’s Pawlenty. Oh well. The tide is changing back in MN, yes it is.
MATTHEWS: “It is so obvious to everyone watching that you are changing the subject.”
It’s gonna take more than one interview for me to regain much respect for Chris Matthews, but this one was a start.
Pretty sad when someone who has been ‘selected’ (not elected – Sarah forgets that there’s an “s” in front of her ‘election’) as a VP running mate generates more talk about her questionable taste in clothing than her (lack of) keen mind and in-depth grasp of international situations. Her party’s choice of clothes for this waxed manequin continues to belittle most if not all intelligent women – the men choosing these outfits seem to think she is running for “Queen of Hooters” rather than for the serious position of “President-in-Waiting”. A smart ‘dame’ would be dressing down so that the electorate could focus on what she is saying, not how she is looking. I guess maybe I just answered my own question as to why she is being made to dress this way – She is not meant to be heard.

it was six years ago not four (October 25, 2002). i met Senator Wellstone and his wife Sheila in 1997. He was a very remarkable man. He was very personable and I enjoyed talking with him very much. If he had been alive in 2004 things might have gone differently. I am very, very happy with Barack Obama and Joe Biden. But if Paul Wellstone were alive today, he would be a factor in everything. There is a theory that he really was assassinated but I have never studied the facts of the crash so I just don’t know. All I know is that I instantly liked him very much when I met him. A very impressive man. His wife Sheila had this air of gentle thoughtfulness around her that was very impressive too. i was very shocked when I heard the news six years ago almost to the day.
Thanks Hamlet’s MIll.
I thought there was something odd about Rybeck’s statement. Yes, it’s been 6 years. I’m glad you got to meet the Wellstones and loved them. I did as well. They were remarkably open and accessible. In fact, they were probably the most outgoing and friendly political couple Minnesotan’s have ever seen.
There are a lot of us who thought (and still think) there was something very, very fishy about that plane crash. The extinguishing of their two bright lights are still much mourned here. I agree. Things would have been quite different.
Thanks for your comments,

Nice, Bec. Glad you’re feeling it…that’s a good thing. 😉 (Mudhugs)
It has been obvious that she had gotten a wardrobe stylist, because all her clothes began to look alike. The Repos decided that a high collar on the jacket and low nickline on the blouse gave the right balance of puritanic and look what I’ve got boys.
(Remember when Hillary showed a little bit of chest, the RepoChirstians went nuts.) But then the Republicans want women who are decorative, and the increase in mental dysfunctional can grow in direct relation to sexy, and the woman can then remain acceptable to them.
Your analogy to 10,000 grandmothers is spot on. I hope your readers will pass that illustration on. It is so telling of how economically divided this country is.
I work in a hospital lab, that budget would last me about 150 years, for my scrubs. In fact it would clothe all the nurses and lab personel in my small rural hospital for about 30 years. Since the OB and surgical nurses get their scrubs supplied by the hospital, even longer than that.
You had mentioned something about changing your comment page and the snow flakes. I like the attractive icons. Frankly they are more attractive than most of the “personalized” photo id’s, and certainly better than the black heads and torsos.
Ripley, thanks for the link to those Obama pics! They were truly wonderful.

Just popping back in after work (I posted the Sarasota Women for Obama bridge march video earlier today) and wanted to say you are very much! After this is all over, will Sarah Palin be able to win re-election in Alaska?
FYI, any of you non-Tv owners like me can watch MSNBC (Rachel on right now) at this site:
http://channelsurfing.net/watch-msnbc.html
OK.. back to Rachel!
What’s wrong with wearing one’s own clothes in a campaign? Palin looks like a cookie-cutter version of a female candidate. She would’ve done better to wear what she always wears. That wouldn’t have addressed her brain deficit, but at least it would have been honest.
The $150k will be well spent if after the elections it allows the Palin name to become a label alongside Gucci and Versace. Much more desirable for the country than becoming a VP. One could even donate to help launch…
Let the time of “Rouge Cou” be over.
Of course the family could diversify:
“Maverick” – designer suits for congressmen (“You too can be a maverick!”)
“Gothca” – to target a liberal market
“Betcha” – pregnancy wear (real and fake)
“Joe the Plumber” – underwear (imaginary)
“Joe Six Pack” – party wear, bonus vomit bag
“Dude” – winter wear for the independent spirit
“I can see Russia” – sunglasses
This really bugs me, I admit. I don’t see how people can buy the “I’m just like you” line. When she was sworn in as Gov. she looked decent. Okay, you can tell that she’s not decked out at the level of Cindy McCain/Laura Bush but she looked professional and well dressed enough.
I guess that if she becomes VP[oh, please NO!!], we can expect more shopping so that she’s got a different outfit every day. And the kid with the Vuitton drives me crazy! It probably belong to SWWNBN and Piper is just schlepping more stuff for mom[like the baby & the Flyers jersey to avoid boos.]
Bea (17:04:38)
I’m watching now, and Buchannan makes me uncomfortable…there doesn’t appear to be any side to an argument other than his. I don’t think I care for him at all. Does he have the hots for Palin?
Tweet did superb earlier on Hardball. As AKM might say, Chris handed Potelfsdoigo her a$$ (or something close)
Plenty of those clothes and shoes are going to end up in Palin’s closet. And the rest of the family will keep their goodies too.
Anything Palin wants can always go on ebay and she’ll make sure she outbids everyone else. She’ll get them for pennies on the dollar. Nothing like a Neiman wardrobe at a Walmart price. She can brag about them like her “bargain” tanning bed.
ok….the rnc can say what they want, but in no legal way could they have bought the clothing and “leant” it to the candidate…nor could it have been a gift
it is considered taxable income
and palin must declare it as such, no matter what she does with the clothes after nov 4
she can donate them if she wants, but then there must be a depreciation taken, as once worn, they arent worth the same
Sarah’s wardrobe costs sickens me. When many of us in the lower 48 are shopping at Marshalls or TJMaxx, or foregoing a new winter or so our kids can have a new coat or boots this winter… How many new expensive snowmobile suits does Todd get out of this deal when he returns to Alaska??
epic (11:31:18) :
Anyone know what they do with the early votes?
hide ‘em in a cupboard until Election day?
Count ‘em and write the figures down on an envelope?
************************************************************
In NC, we fill out a paper ballot with bubbles like multiple choice tests and they get scanned by a machine. presumably the machine store the votes until election day. They are supposed to keep the paper ballots in case of recount.
Guys, Piper was not carrying a $300 bag, it would be $790 if it was real. The photo shoot image is at [http://deceiver.com/] with the information that the bag is a counterfeit – doesn’t that sort of ring true of this whole campaign?
I wonder if the $100+ jersey Piper had on for the puck drop at the Flyers game a few weeks ago was paid by the RNC, if she selected one with one of the Flyers stars on it.
http://shop.nhl.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3253873&f=PAD%2FProduct+Type%2FJerseys&fbc=1&f=PAD%2FGender%2FKids&fbc=1&fbn=Gender|Kids&fbx=0
Right. After $10,000 suits, Sarah is going to go home to Alaska to a closet full of polar fleece and Jones New York for special events and be happy. I don’t think so. I think they’re hoping we’ll all forget. Once she gets back to Alaska, if she’s photographed in any of that stuff, she’s toast.
Don Pardo, show her our parting gifts.
I bet she isn’t very happy abput the donating these new cloths to charity. Heck they could have an auction like the did of Princess Dianas dresses. All those Joe the plumbers could go out and bid for them. Then they could give it to the poor and downtrodden wallstreet investment bankers who no longer have 20 million dollar golden parachutes to cushion their fall.
As for where all the republican outrage is, pardon me, but I think all of the sane republicans have already left the building including most of the sweet grandmas like my very elderly mother and aunts who at 81 to 92 think McCain is an old fuddy duddy, and Palin is “not our kind” transulated this means one step above a psychotic call girl/ ax nurderer.
Keep it up. That was wonderful! Lets see, it would take me at least five years to make that kind of money. Will they let us know where the articles will be dispersed?

Kim, I grew up (jr hi, hs, USF) just up the road in Tampa, and came back for several years, after a stint in the military overseas and finishing college in TX. Your post brought tears to my eyes. I love Florida, and have such wonderful memories of Sarasota. Thank you – and thanks to all those fabulous Florida women.
Gobama!!!!!
Perhaps what she really meant to say was that she identified with Joe Saks Pack.
Snap. Thank you very much. I coined it. You can quote Johnny Scrappleseed aka Scrappledog from Cambridge, Md. Keep up the good bloggery!
AKM, your grandmother sounds lovely – reminded me of mine, who was a democrat. I think anyone of their generation (or, indeed, of my parent’s) would be appalled at what passes for fiscal conservatism in the republican party these days. I want the old republican party back! And, as I said in my own blog, that’s why I want Obama to win in a landslide. Then the good republicans can throw out all those neocons and haters and hypocrites and remake their party. Something to hope for-
I saw the Palin interview concerning Amendment 51 on TV here in Colorado- ironic, considering the current First Lady (Dem) and past First Lady (Rep, but always a class act) have campaigned for it.
Hi Nisperos and Lighthouse- I’ve been to Ft. Collins often, Yuma, several times- and I’m in Littleton (past 30+ years- that’s why I’m almost a native).
A proud-to-be-blue mudpuppy in a sea of red turning purple.
Michele (12:56:33) :
Wow. That’s interesting. Are you registered as an Independent? Both my spouse and son are and they get mail that I don’t get as a registered Democrat. I’ve gotten info pamphlets on candidates and got my sample ballot yesterday, but I don’t have any pamphlet on the propositions yet…but nothing that you have described.
Wow. I’ve been out of the loop with a sinus infection for just two days and here’s another Palin “scandal.” I couldn’t tell by looking at that $2500 Valentino jacket that it was anything special so what’s the point in paying that kind of money? Buying Palin expensive clothes is just another way of putting lipstick on a pig…err…I mean a pit bull.
I can just see McCain’s campaign giving those clothes to poor women after they lose the election. What’s a poor woman going to do with a $2500 jacket? Wear it to work at Target? Wear it to clean the house? Ridiculous. I’m a relatively “poor” woman I’d much prefer that $2500 in cash thank you very much. Then I could put it to productive use.
I gotta say I feel sorry for you folks up in Alaska ‘cuz you’re going to get Palin back after November 4th. Please, please put her out of political condition so she doesn’t turn back up in 2012.
OMG I loved this post;. and this site! as someone who lived in Nebraska for 17 years I feel a kindred spiritship (am I being Palinesque here with grammar and or syntax or made up words?) with you Alaskans…please do a thread/link whatever re. our gramma or even parents stories–especially those who lived through Great Depression and WWII. I too, remember my gramma’s kitchen (had the fortune to have her right next door on a farm in Wisconsin) and how she carefully cleaned then smashed each tin can flat (not that she used much canned goods with her huge gardens and chickens and…) where am I going with this? Don’t know what my grammas politics were, to be honest. I was selfish child with completely selfless gramma I realize now. I do know that one of my basic tenets is that, FDR saved our farm. noone ever said this to me, directly it is just what I “know” like how we were a Farmall and not Ford tractor family.
jeez, I sound like I could be Palin supporter! and get this–I am with the guy I dated at age 15!!!! alot of water under bridge/dam whatever,,, but I went from farm to city with no small town living/suburb/exurb/ whatever in between. does that make me quasi-American?
ack.
I don’t understand why she is so poor being a governor and all that she can’t afford to buy her own clothes. Isn’t her job as a parent to clothe her own children? Me personally… I would feel very guilty about taking this money. I live on a small fraction of what she does, and I have enough pride in my ability to be independent to BUY MY OWN CLOTHES! But, I guess SOCIALISM is okay for the upper class Republicans, but not for the rest of America. What is the matter with this woman? Will it ever end? It doesn’t make me feel any better that the clothing will go to charity. For one, I don’t believe that for one moment. And second, I wouldn’t want to touch something she wore with a ten foot pole.
eek! totally derailed myself (maybe I should run for Vp or Potus??) gramma flash back/nostalgia had me also thinking about the Barbie clothes she painstakingly sewed for us c.1960. Sarah truly is the Caribou Barbie. maybe that will be why the people voting for her, well, are still enamored as in, look! try the little ruby red shoes on-the jacket, with the skirt, or different skirt/jacket/shoes.!!!! like dressing barbie, which we spent hours and hours doing. barbie never had a personality as a doll( for me or my friends) but ohhhhh the outfits!!!!!!!
I just can’t wait til Sarah Palin is a footnote in history… does anyone think of Dan Quaile? and he was actually in office!
thank you for the awsome website and forum!!! let’s keep it up after the victory (Obama, let’s hope landslide….)
Sounds like my grandma. She died a few years ago at 95. You know, that was a different generation. But, what I remember the most was that my grandmother have me the gift of herself and time. She spent time with me doing the daily things she does, but she included me in those things. She didn’t say, just go play. So I got to know her very well. They kind of person she was. Is this Palin? No. Although she hawls her children all over the country, it is for her self-agrandizement, not to give them the attention they need. For one thing, they belong in school. At least Michele Obama was a decent engough mother to take off the first week of school and stay off the campaign trail because the children are priority. And she supports the importance of the normal life for them. I can’t imagine the distorted lives Palins’ children will have if they got to Washington.
I bet they just thought of saying that the clothes are really meant to be donated to charity AFTER the RNC got a lot of flak for spending that much money on clothes.
In the back of my mind I kept on hearing her whiny voice saying “Do we really have to? Come on…”
You betcha!
Although, it will be interesting to see her tax records next year especially after she supposedly donate the clothes… can she take credit for that in her taxes under the donation area?
That would be so wrong…
but then I wouldn’t put it past someone who charges the state for her children’s travels to do that….
Okay let me get this straight….Barack and Michele have one house and one
car, and Biden has one house and one car, and John and Cindy have between 7 and 9 houses and 13 cars, and Sarah and the First “dud” have a float plane outside their front door, and now the RNC has just spent for this “Wal-Mart” mom, and “soccer mom”, and average six-pack Joe moosehunter, some $150,000 on clothes from Neiman Marcus and Saks 5th Ave and they dare to call Barack elitist. Just when you think they cant do anything dumber McCains campaign managers just up the ante, and I am sure they are paying them even more than what they spent on Sarah’s wardrobe .
AKM, I totally agree with you on Chris Matthews, it was one of his better
moments. I also enjoyed his coaching of the evil Michele Bachmann, and
giving her just enough rope to hang herself. Its been a couple of enjoyable viewing days.
nice!
and here i thought she preferred wolf fur…
Many Republicans will stick with the ticket no matter what Palin says, does, or looks like…it’s all about the Party, loyalty, conservativism (race?). I don’t know if there’s anything that will get to them, but the race is too close not to be concerned.
Correction: conservatism. I can spell, I should proofread.
Wow…with $150,000 I could pay off my mortgage, and then continue to shop at Savers for my clothes. Even my shoes are bought at yard sales…don’t remember the last time I bought something new to wear.
I was raised in a Republican family, am a registered Republican (will be an Indie soon) who voted for Obama in our early elections that started October 18th here in Nevada. Even talked my 70 y.o. dad out of voting Republican…
Hi CO Almost Native!
I have to admit that I just saw a clip of Palin talking about Amendment 51 in Colorado. Isn’t it nice that Colorado is turning blue this year?
My aforementioned 85 year old uncle has a step-daughter in Littleton, so they always head that direction after leaving our house.
And Sleepycathollow:
Good for you! Getting your dad to see the light! I know that can be really difficult, and my hubby’s Republican family is as Republican as ever unfortunately.
Horsehair – for her pride and vanity
It reminds me of a Dolly Parton quote:
“It takes a lot of money, to make me look this cheap”.
Ditto for Sarah.
They can dress her in the finest, silks, leather, cotton, and polyester, and plaster her face with the finest make-ups, and hair transformations.. In the end she is just an empty-headed suit.
Brian Williams was “teasing” us a bit on MSNBC last night, telling the viewers, that he isn’t going to give the FULL details of his interview with McCain/Palin, that he wants viewers to watch it, to get their own take on it. What clips that were shown, I’ve already had to shake my head. This woman knows how to say, a lot of words, without saying ANYTHING that appears to be on the topic of the question asked. Basically all her answers were about Obama, and NOT what them two are planning on doing,..
Palin and McCain? There is some tenseness there, McCain’s expressions were that he was waiting for her to screw up.
And why is it that he has to be by her side in interviews now? Don’t you all find that a bit sexist?
Mudflats (akmuckraker) —
Your grandmother is not a “good Republican”, but a traditional one. One that represents most Republicans today. The problem is the party has been taken over at the vocal leadership level by the radical right. Much like the Democratic Party has been taken over by the looney left. It stinks for most level-headed people as those are still your two viable choices… but there’s always 2012.
Question for you: What’s a “good Democrat”?
A good Democrat is a person who sides with the people, and lifts up all of the country’s citizens, not just a privileged few. Someone who is working to make sure that everyone has a fair shake, particularly in education. Someone who supports organized labor because they know history and what life was like before the unions. Someone who believes that public education is a good thing, and needs to be treated as such. Someone who supports the middle class and realizes that FDR was not “loony left” but helped to build the strongest middle class the country has ever known. Good Democrats are tired of the country serving the needs of corporations, which have all the rights of persons, yet cannot be sent to jail if they violate them. Good Democrats are tired of privatized profits and socialized losses. Good Democrats are tired of bleeding our treasure and our troops in unnecessary wars fought to keep oil companies wealthy, instead of creating a new industry and infrastructure that will make them obsolete. Good Democrats support the notion of the commons, those things for which a government is responsible for the good of all – public education, health care, etc…. I could go on, but fingers are getting tired.
I would like to believe you that most Republicans are “traditional” and like my grandma….but I don’t see it. Come out come out wherever you are! I hope they start to speak up and demand their party back, or start a new one.
AKM
I’m the family black sheep, being a liberal Democrat. So, I know about “good Republicans” and have used the phrase myself to describe my family and some ex-military friends who are also Republicans. What makes them good? Some of the same things you mention or imply: frugality, honesty, hard work, being responsible for themselves. These are also the things that make most of my friends “good Democrats.” Equally important, we are all people who care about issues (not the slanderous attacks that pass for politics these days) and who think about the issues and discuss them, even if we don’t agree.
But, you wondered what Republicans might be thinking about Palin’s $150,000 wardrobe. I suspect many of them don’t know, or don’t want to know, about it. While that info may make the blog world hum, it’s just a flicker in the daily news, so it probably gets missed and/or ignored. But, I think enough of them will learn about these excesses so that–even if they don’t vote for Obama–they’ll at least not vote. That’s half as good, but it helps.
I love!!! your site! Great job. I live in SouthEast Alaska myself and am a political blogger. Look forward to reading more! Peace… http://www.northernvox.com
The problem is – they knew she needed an image revamp… she was not polished enough, not professional enough in appearance.
The mistake was making the revamping into a high-budget spending spree that still did not create the polished, conservative, mainstream American Mom appearance that she needed.
A lot more could have been accomplished with reasonable spending on conservative and classic elements that would not have given her the appearance of a high-priced DC escort.
Meanwhile – somewhere, somebody whoopsed big time… seen the pics of her with the red, white blue scarf that says “VOTE” – with nice big donkeys all over it? Yeah. Ahem.
Are we losing, what Tom Brokaw called, the Greatest Generation? Your grandmother, our grandmothers; “principled, fiscally conservative, quietly religious, kind-hearted”. I almost weep at the thought that no longer “respectable” and “Republican” are used in the same sentence. And kind-hearted? Please. Political observers say that we are seeing the end of the Barry Goldwater Republican era. But, it isn’t an end, it’s a passing. The ideals and principles fading with the previous generation. Newt Gingrich ironically said he feared John Kerry as someone who would nationalize the banks and run up a trillon dollar deficit. So I ask, where are the values of conservatism that made this country great? I lost my own grandmother around the same time as yours and I too would describe her as a good Republican. Which is a funny thing for a bleeding heart liberal like myself to say, “good Republican”. But she was. I hope more like her come back.
Campbell Brown is running her mouth about how Palin should be allowed to do this because women candidates are judged by their appearance way more than men.
I’m sorry, Ms. Brown, but weren’t you the one complaining that the candidates should stop their TV ads because they should just donate that money to charity?
I’m so far left-wing that I think Obama is a bit too conservative for me (though I hope he wins, of course), but I am getting tired of hearing all the Palin criticism. I was surprised to see this as a top item on WordPress. Can we concentrate on the issues please? There is far more corruption involved in the Iraq War, the privatization of our education system and utilities systems than some glamourous outfit Ms. Palin bought to maintain her image.
Women in our culture are held in a ridiculous double bind. They are expected to be extremely feminine and yet similtaneously criticized for being frivolous in their pursuit of femininity. I think Palin is a terrible candidate because of where she stands on the issues important to me, but I also recognize that she is caught in this same trap.
I’ve the grand pleasure, in my generally liberal and open-minded circle, to know and be related to more than a few republicans, ranging from the well-off fiscal conservatives to the uber-life-creationists. While I’m sure some of my Limbaugh-lovin’ kin are all rockin-ready to vote for Palin, I’ve been asking here and there amongst the others how they’re feeling about the coming vote. Now, my grandfather, a conservative most his life, swore off them not long before he died when Bush ran. It was already too much stupidity for him. So I can well guess he’s thinking the same as your grandmother.
The other night I was chatting with another Republican friend of mine, who’s working on becoming the former — a young man currently in law school who doesn’t just vote Republican, but believed in the GOP enough to work for them.
This is what he had to say when I asked who he was voting for in this whole debacle:
Obama … palin and her type of ilk that destroyed the republican party for me.
look, when colin powel and the son of the founder of the national review are endorsing obama . . . it’s bad
the republican party needs to lose, and lose bad.
i was watching some commentators last night, and basically phrased it this way. the republican party has moved away from people like me. its been hijacked by a narrow rightest regime based on ignorance.
problem is i love mccain, i cant vote for him, because after watching the traditional campaign he’s run, ive lost faith that he can govern as the mavrick he used to be. he’s better off in the senate pushing legislation through.
you don’t vote for just the president though, that’s the problem. and i look on it from a historical level. the republican party is a party of exclusion and orthodoxy, that has led to some pretty bad policies in the last 8 years.
i have a hard time seeing a republican even of mccains stature change that.
the party needs to be thrown out of office. . . thats how democracy works.
im going to vote D down the ballot, as a protest vote.
I was blown away by the excuses made for this type of shameless spending, while thousands of people are barely getting by. For an example of why this is amoral, please check my most recent post, “Going once, going twice, $150,000 for a house, uh I mean, a new wardrobe,” in response to this and other blogs about the Governor’s outrageous shopping excursions.
loudelf ~ Question for sleepycathollow: Did your father just say he would to pipe you down? Is he of sound mind and body? Or did you intimidate him?
My father is an ex-Marine and retired LAPD…nobody intimidates him, as no one intimidates me (well my mom does a bit) so bugger off arse.ently Very sound mind an body
Ok..didn’t get to finish that..
People can hold civil discussions without bullying one another…and he would never tell me something to shut me up. I would say Colin Powell change his mind moreso than I. 🙂
Dear AKmuckraker, I could use your help (preserving my sanity) in recalling a Palin bio tidbit.
I’m seeing this story about Palin’s $150k clothing expenditures, and watching it explained away as not necessarily her fault. (e.g. the campaign, handlers, news media and critics all forced it on her; i.e. EBP, everybody but Palin)
But I’m trying to find a story I read (somewhere) shortly after she was selected by McCain about Palin’s penchant for fancier things, or as a celebrity chaser, of sorts. The story had something to do with Palin skipping some event in Alaska in favor of some more frivolous jaunt. Any chance this abysmal description rings a bell with you?
Given the McCain campaign’s portraying Palin as the real America, Jane six-pack hockey mom, and Palin’s denigration of the East Coast and elites, per GOP S.O.P., that previous article along with the $150k clothing expense, her 4-night luxury hotel stay in NYC w/ Bristol, begins to demonstrate a very different person from the myth.
Another data point in the Palin pattern of behavior…? SNL Costume Designer: Sarah Palin Wanted Nicer Clothes
This reeks — Here’s an excerpt from Washingtonmonthly.com:
“Why don’t the numbers add up?”
Some of the fashion experts consulted Wednesday, for instance, about the $150,000 in purchases that appeared on Federal Election Commission records were puzzled by where all of that money had gone, given what they had seen of Ms. Palin’s wardrobe.
Consider also the $4,902.45 charge at Atelier New York, a high-end men’s store, presumably for Ms. Palin’s husband, Todd, the famous First Dude.
Karlo Steel, an owner there, said he had gone through the store’s receipts for September, twice, and found no sales that matched that amount, nor any combination of sales that added up to the total. Because the store carries aggressively directional men’s wear, he caters to a small clientele and knows most of his customers by name, as well as the history of their purchases…. “We have no recollection of that sale and no idea what they are talking about,” Mr. Steel said.
Similarly, the RNC records show a charge of $98 at a high-end children’s boutique in Minneapolis, but after going through their receipts, the store owners found no record of the sale.
Soooo, um, what happend to that $4,902.45? And the $98?
John Edwards, at least, paid for his own haircut.
The man who bought the clothes in MN at the convention is Jeff Larson who founded the robocall firm. http://www.flsconnect.com
They did a local story last weekend and said he likes to keep a low profile (who wouldn’t if you were him?) Apparently he’s a very influential republican operative. Which we know because the same robocalls were used against McCain by Bush.
The newscaster mentioned he lived in Hudson WI. If you search white pages.com he is the first of only 2 listings for Jeff Larsons in Hudson. I called but his teenage son answered; so due to the fact that I’m a decent human being I didn’t say anything to his son. I would not have been as decent telling his dad what a lowlife he is.
Shouldn’t he be inconvenienced in his home?

This family is sooooo down to earth. This is a story from July on Huffingtonpost.com Sasha: “Mommy buys everything from Gap!”
In early July the Obama family sat down for an interview with Maria Menounos of “Access Hollywood.” One of the topics discussed was Barack’s status as a style icon, which amused his wife and daughters because, as Michelle points out in the interview, his belt and shoes need replacing, and his pants are 10 years old (“I hate to shop,” he explains). Michelle also reveals that the sundress she’s wearing is from the Gap: “Fortunately now they make really pretty stuff at all price ranges… This is worth watching.
i just cant believe what i am reading all over the net about Sarah Palins wardrobe. oh my God, has every one gone completely crazy and left me behind? why is it that no one cares about the important issues and things that actualy matter? i think that sarah is a beautiful, intelligent and classy woman. that in itself will make alot of women jealous. all the crap i have been listening to on CNN and headline news this morning was FULL of jealous and shallow women picking sarah apart for a wardrobe. WHO FREAKIN CARES if she spends money on clothes? let her buy her clothes in peace. clothing is the least of our worries sheeple. wake up and pay attention to what is going on around you. this is the most important election in history, will be move closer to a socialist society or remain governed by our constitution? will we be taxed into the poor house, will we lose more and more of our troops in these wars for oil and world order control? THESE are important issues people. not sarahs clothing choices. sarah is what every man wants and what every woman wishes they could be. soooo obviously jealous of her. i have to laugh a little. the ignorance of the public is almost surreal to me. i cant believe that these idiots are the ones who are going to be picking the leader of this country. wake up people, we are in alot of trouble if you havent noticed. dont let the shallow decietful media distract you from what is right in front of your face……….this country needs you to wake up.
I like how Sarah now says that the clothes are going to “be returned or donated to charity.” EEEyew – what kind of cheapskate returns clothes she’s already worn?
The embarassment to the Republican Party here is not the amount of money – I have an announcement to make: women spend a lot of money on clothes, and if we look as though we don’t, people gossip about us even more – that’s why I don’t donate to political causes, by the way. To me the problem is that they spent $150K to dress her like some soap opera watcher’s idea of a “powerful woman” – loud colors, tight skirts, spiky heels, tall boots: this look is “professional” only in the sense of The World’s Oldest, knowwhatImean?
Somebody had this dumb idea to tramp her up and then spend even MORE money an a pair of glasses so she’d look serious.
re: Ashley T This girl is just following the example set by her party’s leadership: lies, bigotry, and more lies. Palin and McCain appeal to the worst that is in people, the lowest that people can go. And, sadly, many Americans choose to follow their poor example.
My husband, who has his moments of brilliance, points out something that had escaped me:
The whole donation defense here implies something important – they must expect to be defeated.
If she were elected VP, wouldn’t she still need her fancy wardrobe?
If she’s crawling back to Alaska (you lucky folks), though, she doesn’t need it any more.
lauowolf, the flaw in your analysis is that you and your spouse are assuming the “donation defense” is anything other than an off-the-cuff rationalization, not really thought out.
The thing to remember, though, is that what’s going to happen to the clothes is irrelevant, because the real issue is the hypocrisy that is constant regardless… they’re parading Palin around as the everywoman hockey mom, friend of Joe Six-Pack, Joe the Plumber and all the Joe’s in-between… and deriding the East Coast elites… all the while putting on the airs of an ultra-elite and spending the campaign donations of all those Joes (and Janes) on a wardrobe that is multiples of the average annual household income.
[…] A few days ago I read at Mudflats: Palin’s “Respectable Republican Leather Jacket” Must Go. […]
