Just watching a little bit of Morning Joe before work (7 AM here in NY). Mika is in charge, as Joe is off somehwhere (thank God – keep him wherever he is).
Anyway, first story at the top of the hour was an extensive debate about Sarah Palin’s clothes ! MSM is jumping all over this, and they also mention her kids travel expenses on the crawler, with more in-depth news to come on both issues.
Mike Barnicle said “America has a very sensitve hypocrisy meter” and this issue is going to resonate strongly (in a negative way) among Hockey Moms and Walmart Moms around the country.

I have to tell you, that was the scariest video I’ve seen in quite a while — the Mayor of Wasilla gets paid $XX,XXX per year to have one staff meeting and spend probably 30 minutes signing checks? So much for executive experience, I do more than that running our household here in small-town New York City, where we’re working 50+ hours a week to make ends meet, deal with our local neighborhood shops on a “knows your name” basis, spend lots of time with our favorite community organization, actually pay for our fire/police/teachers, contribute more to NY State than we receive back, etc., etc.
I’m constantly stunned by the mis-appropriation of the 9/11 experience by practically EVERYONE who (a) wasn’t here; (b) thought NYC “got what it deserved” due to “godless whatever-ism”; and (c) wasn’t directly affected. Grow up, people, it was terrible, but it has morphed into a Rethug excuse for erosion of your Constitutional civil rights.
We’re volunteering at the Obama call bank (calling to PA voters this weekend), haven’t been this politically engaged since we were protesting the war in Vietnam (circa 1969). The ONLY thing one can thank SWWNBN for, talk about GOTV!!

Aussie, hysterical emails have me bordering on …well…hysteria. I’m trying so hard not to become angry with friends who think they know better than me. I am not sure how to respond, so I don’t. The problem with this is that my lack of response must make them think that I’m okay with their junk mail. It is hard to take someone serious when their mail refers to Sen. Obama as Nobama or Osama. It’s hate mail, and it’s making me hateful. I have one friend of 30+ years that I’ve seriously considered adding to my spam mail and ending the friendship. I keep telling myself to wait it out, the election is almost over, and things will be fine. But I fear that with an Obama win, things will only get worse between us. We’ve yet to speak about this, but the emails are driving me away.

The salary at last word is $64,000 per year, but actually she does a bit more than just the two things (remember the video is from the Daily Show). They have regular city council meetings and civic activities (you know like snow machine race starts and stuff like that to attend to) and the usual citizen service (talking to people who drop by). All of the extra day work, like running the sports complex, maintaining water and sewers, etc, is the reason Sarah hired a full-time ($50,000 per year) manager to help out.

My lil’ bro’ is an engineer in Fla and works in an office with a total of 30 college-educated engineers. When GWB won the 2004 election, I called him and asked him if he truly believed that GWB won Florida (my bro, a Repub, voted GWB in 2000, NOT in 2004). He said yes. He said out of 30 educated engineers in his office, 3 voted Kerry, 27 voted Bush. When asked, he discovered that out of those 27, only 2 or 3 actually could talk about issues, economy, war, etc. The other 24/25 couldn’t. Never read a newspaper, never watched the news, didn’t even seem so concerned about current events. So when asked why they had voted GWB, they all had the same answer “because he is a Man of God”. And there is your explanation!

Our town is bigger than Wasilla by about 2500 folks; has a fire dept., police dept, garbage dept, water dept, building inspection dept., and street dept; and has a full- time manager who costs us $60,000/yr. Our mayor gets $400/mo with city council members getting $300/mo. There simply cannot be enough to do in Wasilla with full time manager in charge that a mayor needs to do. I’m shocked that the citizens there put up with such a waste of tax dollars. I’m beyond insulted that Wasilla got all those millions of dollars in fed pork.
Knowing our mayor as well as I do, I gotta tell you, he’s a great mechanic but I wouldn’t want him as VP and he’s been a mayor doing more work for a lot less money than Scarah for at least 12 years now.
BTW – I will bet that Mayor Keller isn’t the only one that can sign checks. I figure that City Manager could do that as well and that eliminates Keller from that Thursday carpal tunnel inducing chore! Shoot I bet Wasilla could get a software program to print checks — sig template included — for under $1k so that would free up Mayor Keller on Thursdays!!
What are the citizens of Wasilla smoking if they continue to elect mayors for that kind of money with no experience to do a little bit of nothing??

There is a company called Autopen that makes templates for anything you want printed that looks hand written, because it’s a real pen writing on paper, only thing is it’s a machine, not a hand.
A signature is simple to do. Just have checks in a template.. turn it on and it signs them, perfectly everytime. No need for anyone at all, just secure the template after it’s done and you have no need for anyone to be on premises to sign checks.. it’s an old outdated process anyway..! Checks are dropping in usage every day!

Gotta get the kids from the bus and do those “hocky mom” sorts of things, ya know like cook em dinner and help em with their homework and stuff. 🙂 He was in Fredericksburg VA a few weeks back and drew a huge 26,000 crowd (that’s way big here!) It rained and he took his jacket off, rolled his sleeves up and kept right on talking with the crowd in the rain. Awesome!

I think Wasilla needs a new charter!! To heck with little despots with that kind of power!! That’s simply ridiculous!! It should be Council’s job with the Mayor serving as titular head in parliamentary procedure to approve budgets AND the power to hire and fire department heads. With a City Manager overseeing day to day operations, there simply is no reason for Wasilla or any town that size to need a full time salaried mayor. It’s ridiculous!!

the leesburg location is only 30-40 min away, so my temptation is to get my work done early and head there.. I agree, i think it will be a history making thing and there is certainly a lot of excitement.
The past few election cycles were just bland. Kerry was about as exciting as a pumpkin. Gore was exciting as a Ghord. They really were those ‘lesser of two evil’ candidates.
This time, there is truely a clear choice and someone who stands on the stage and is compelling, inspiring and clearly presidential. Not in my lifetime, except JFK, when i was a little kid was the country excited over a candidate. Maybe Ronald Reagan generated that kind of excitement, and Bill Clinton was a strong candidate, but no one has inspired people like Obama. I picked him during the first speech I heard. He has something special and that is what makes him so excitement.
McCain can only win this by cheating I believe.. new polls have Grumpy so far down, all of failins problems, and the fact that mcgrumpy has no viable plan means he can’t win without gop cheating. They’re not against cheating, which in itself should disqualify them. Hire the Olympics and Omega to make sure it’s fair. hahaha
Although, votin for failin so she can get in there and muck it up with the senate since she’s in charge of the senate, so let her do it..!
I am continually amazed at the slackitude these Wasilla creatures have for the highest offices in the USA. They are like, … ah, I am a bagger at Walmart, therefore, I know, I am qualified to be Attorney General. Yea, I am on the Wasilla school board, I am qualified to be the United States Secretary of State.
Keep in mind folks, as Wasilla’s mayor, Sarah Palin was compelled to hire a city manager, to handle the tuff stuff, a Monday morning staff meeting, and signing 6 checks on Thursday’s.

You must pay taxes on any gift over $600. When I worked in radio, if a listener (or whoever) won a prize worth $600 or more, they had to fill out tax papers. But the answer is YES, he will have to pay INCOME TAX on the money.

If you read the article, the hotel rooms were not cheap, and I have to wonder if she didn’t charge for their meals as well.
The queen of “no hint of unethical activity” even amended the expense reports after reporters asked for the records. Doesn’t that indicate to you that PALIN KNEW THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH HER CHARGING TRAVEL FOR HER CHILDREN? Otherwise, why amend them?

Well Sarah “I’m the advocate for the disabled” Palin has lied again. She is against a state sales tax in Colorado to provide funding to end the waitlist in Colorado for people with disabilities. This is a huge thing in the disability community as people with disabilities wait for years before they can receive funding for services. States don’t have extra money. Even in Alaska there was a waitlist (we were recommended to get our baby daughter on it right away so that hopefully by the time she was out of school she would have made it to the top of the list so she could get funding. That was exactly the point of my question. Think about it. She had an approval rating in the 80’s, was charging per diem to stay in her own home, charging for her kid’s travel, and God only knows what else (housegate, etc.). Who knows if these issues would have arisen had she could have kept her blind ambition in check.

Keith O. had a comment I just watched (maybe already linked here) about the ongoing discussion about the VP duties…as Constitutionally defined and as defined by Palin.
She keeps mentioning that the VP is in charge of the Senate…Keith chides her about it but it’s obvious she really believes this and sees it as her future role. The numbers in the Senate are key to getting legislation passed, and I would imagine Palin would like to get ‘all Mavericky up in there’ (per Tina Fey) and make sure the appropriate legislation gets passed (nudge, nudge, wink, wink).
As for the $150K, well, it was pretty obvious this has been a trip through the star factory for the Palin family. I am not surprised at all, and I am happy the RNC is getting called on it. The Obama campaign has a very strict ‘no gifts’ policy, by comparison. It’s all about image for the RNC, but I would argue that image by Gap versus image by Barney’s is just as good and much more appropriate given our current economic state of affairs.

Good news Mudpeople!! A die hard Republican friend of mine sent a mass e-mail yesterday encouraging everyone to vote for…Bob Barr! Yay! Since Dems are more committed to Obama by a few % points (as a poll yesterday said) than Repubs are to McPalin, hopefully some of the Repubs who could never bring themselves to vote for Obama but can’t vote for SP will also vote for Barr and split the Repub vote!
It’s a way for them to let Obama get elected, then be able to say they didn’t vote for him! Fair enough.

Would that negate his natural born citizenship, though, even if it was true? The argument was that only Indonesian citizens were allowed to attend school there and thus, by using the adopted/step father’s name, he (or his parents) claimed he was a citizen there. It’s confusing to me but this guy in Phillie seems to be on a mission of some sort – I’ll check out snopes, thanks!!

My kids were both born in France – to me, an American mother and to a French father. They have his last name. I registered their births at the consulate in Paris and I received a birth certificate for each. They have 2 nationalities, 2 passports. They are as American as any American and both would qualify as President of the United States. So no matter what happened in Indonesia, unless he voluntarily gave up his American citizenship, he is American.

If you have not heard Mrs Obama speak, you should watch the video. She is a lovely woman, very down to earth and very inspiring. There was no hate at this rally, just lots of positive energy and smiling faces. Before she left town, Mrs Obama took the time to meet privately with some military families and with the 100 or so who could not get into the rally.
Mrs Obama is receiving some negative press here about her outfit. It was not fancy, but her outfit is not her message. Mrs Meat commented that Michelle’s shoes can be found at PayLess Shoes.

This whole week reminded me of a Time magazine story from last year, just before Poland’s parliamentary elections. In which the then ruling Law And Justice party (their initials in Polish are PiS – I kid you not) lost its majority. A Polish cartoonist was lamenting that the country faced a critical shortage of humorists … “the Kaczynskis are giving us too much material. We can’t keep up.” 😉

I think that’s the best thing that can happen right now. I hope we can keep the attention on Palin’s seemingly endless supply of unethical behavior…at least ’til Barack get’s back from his visit to his grandmother. I’ll admit to a morbid curiosity that has me running to the television whenever bible Barbie agrees to an interview. Here in Florida, we’re excited as ever, but also nervous. Voter suppression scares me, particularly because the “exact match” rule can snag even the registration savvy. Something as small as whether or not a middle initial appears on a license can foul things up.
I took my two daughters to see/hear Obama in early September in Jacksonville. The thrill was very real and palpable then, when he was behind McCain in the polls, but now, whenever I see his rallies on t.v., I can’t help but get that thrill all over again. There’s something very studied and logical about the way he’s run his campaign. I can’t help but think that if he applies the same measured and thoughtful study to our country’s problems, then there truly is hope.
I am appalled and amazed at the audacity of the repugs!!!
At every turn I see something that shouts at me …

As a fellow Floridian I say vote early, that seems to be some sort of small safeguard against someone jerking you around on election day when it is too late to fix. Obama’s website is very clear in their advice to vote early. I mention this because I too have been freaking about voter purge and suppression, I remember 2000 really well.

Jamie, my parents worked for NASA in Huntsville, Alabama when I was young, then in high school, we moved to Titusville. In the early nineties, I lived at New Smyrna beach – at the beautiful Bethune Beach down near Canaveral National Seashore.
We’re down south now. I have high hopes for Florida this time around. 2000 and 2004 are way too painful to think about.

Off topic apologies, but I feel a need to get this off my chest.
I’ve lost some respect for Bill Clinton recently, but he could regain a lot of Brownie points with me if, while Obama is tending to his grandmother, Bill were to get out there, pick up the slack and work some of his old magic. He still IMHO is the best at taking complicated issues and making them both straightforward and compelling.
This is my hope for today.

I just studied Real Clear (thanks for the link) and the only way I can see that McCain can win is if he get ALL of his solidly reds, plus leaning reds, plus toss ups plus either Va or Co and NM which are leaning blue. According to this map Obama only needs Va. or Co. and NM to put him over 270. So I guess McCain could win given this maps scenario but it sure looks like it would be very hard and hopefully unlikely. That actually just made me feel better, I get positively demented when I see little poll shifts.

With regard to the birth certificate issue, McCain can’t raise this himself because he has a bigger problem than Obama (who actually has none). The Constitution requires that the president be a “natural born citizen”. This means that you have to have been born IN THE US, not just be born to parents who are themselves American citizens.
McCain was not born in the US, he was born on a military base in Panama. There is a dispute among legal scholars as to whether he is a “natural born” citizen or not.
Today is a deadline of sorts for the Obama campaign. All of the decisions about where they can put their money in the next two weeks depend on how much they have in the coffers at midnight tonight. I am positive. Congress ultimately passed a law stating that kids born on military bases were “natural born” citizens, but the law was passed after McCain was born.
Under rules of statutory construction, Congress is presumed not to pass a law that is unnecessary (don’t laugh). Thus, the interpretation would be that those born before the law was passed must not be natural born citizens otherwise Congress would not have found it necessary to enact the law in the first place.

Sorry to say McCain is a citizen. Law passed in 1937, 1 year after McCain was born states that anyone born in the canal zone on or after 2-26-1904 is a US Citizen.

All this scheming and skimming the cream off tax payers’ milk buckets and personal vendettas and whatnot make me think that at least one of the reasons for Palin’s chucking of the security people (who would drive her around) and the mansion cook might be that the Palins really don’t want any non-family/friend employees hanging around and overhearing those scheming phone calls or conversations.
How does she envision carrying on that family-only tight privacy on a national stage? Does she think that she can chuck security and household personnel in Washington too? After all the crap that’s come out so far, does she still believe that her method of “transparent government” (i.e., hide, deny, lie”) would be even remotely possible in the big league?
It seems that she does… that’s one of the scary things about her.

Several legal scholars question whether the retroactive portion of the law is constitutional. Retroactive provisions are disfavored by the courts. (That is just a fancy way of saying that they don’t like them and will often strike them down though they will leave the prospective application of the law intact.)

Yes, Kat, he meant to say cut. He corrected himself, from the first Freudian attempt, to cut. It sounded clear to me, but then I knew what he was about to say, allegedly. It maybe that some will hear it as indistinct. It’s hard to say, but easy to predict he will just say he was misheard. If he has any sense left, he’ll ignore the whole issue.
Republicans are trying to say that the $150,000 spent on Palin’s wardrobe is trivial and shouldn’t be an issue. ($150,000 is trivial? There’s one of their problems).
However, this expenditure should be of concern to Republicans, given that McCain is having to prioritize and pull out of battleground states because he’s short on money.
Repubs running for the House or Senate in those states hould be furious. The McCain camp had enough money to spend $150,000 on Palin, a clearly unqualified VP choice who is now polling as the greatest drag on the ticket, but they couldn’t support their candidates for the House and Senate?
I think this should be the bigger story. After all, we all know that Palin is all style and no substance. Why spend $150,000 to reinforce this obvious fact?

Ok, all you Mudders! I just got back from voting in WV and I’m happy to say that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the touch screen. I used the stylus and touched each candidate I was voting for and no problemo. Along the side of the machine is a printer recording your vote. You can watch it print the name of the candidate and all went well. Touched Barack Obama and got Barack Obama! Well, not literally but you know what I mean… Even got an “I Voted Today” sticker… 🙂

BTW, I forgot to mention that last nights local news said voting turnout broke another record yesterday , even more than the FIRST day of early voting!!!
The number of voters actually showing up to the polls is amazing, each day more and more show up…..HISTORY in the making down here in Dallas TX….Dallas turned BLUE in 2006, would be wqonderful to see the entire state turn blue this year.
