Palin Charges State for Children’s Travel

21 10 2008

This news came out during “Per Diem Gate”, but the Associated Press has delved into it a little further, and brought it to the forefront once again.  Click the link to read the whole sordid thing.  Quite a fiscal refomer, don’tcha think?  *wink*  It’s going to be a very interesting homecoming, folks.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Gov. Sarah Palin charged the state for her children to travel with her, including to events where they were not invited, and later amended expense reports to specify that they were on official business.

The charges included costs for hotel and commercial flights for three daughters to join Palin to watch their father in a snowmobile race, and a trip to New York, where the governor attended a five-hour conference and stayed with 17-year-old Bristol for five days and four nights in a luxury hotel.

In all, Palin has charged the state $21,012 for her three daughters’ 64 one-way and 12 round-trip commercial flights since she took office in December 2006. In some other cases, she has charged the state for hotel rooms for the girls.

Alaska law does not specifically address expenses for a governor’s children. The law allows for payment of expenses for anyone conducting official state business.

As governor, Palin justified having the state pay for the travel of her daughters – Bristol, 17; Willow, 14; and Piper, 7 – by noting on travel forms that the girls had been invited to attend or participate in events on the governor’s schedule.

But some organizers of these events said they were surprised when the Palin children showed up uninvited, or said they agreed to a request by the governor to allow the children to attend.

Several other organizers said the children merely accompanied their mother and did not participate. The trips enabled Palin, whose main state office is in the capital of Juneau, to spend more time with her children.

“She said any event she can take her kids to is an event she tries to attend,” said Jennifer McCarthy, who helped organize the June 2007 Family Day Celebration picnic in Ketchikan that Piper attended with her parents.

State Finance Director Kim Garnero told The Associated Press she has not reviewed the Palins’ travel expense forms, so she could not say whether the daughters’ travel with their mother would meet the definition of official business.

After Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain chose Palin his running mate and reporters asked for the records, Palin ordered changes to previously filed expense reports for her daughters’ travel.

In the amended reports, Palin added phrases such as “First Family attending” and “First Family invited” to explain the girls’ attendance.

At least someone’s paying attention to it, if even a little late. The scary thing is the thought of what would’ve happened had she never been tapped as VP; this kind of stuff would’ve very likely gone unnoticed.

ignorance is not bliss

I work for a public employer, and I could NEVER get away with this, even if I wanted to. Now, I have taken family members by using a companion fare coupon, and I have let them stay with me in the same hotel I would be staying in anyway; but I could never imagine charging the public for a single cent beyond what I would already be paying if a family member were not present.

Also, if I stay any length of time beyond the official reason for travel, I have to justify that in a letter, and I cannot charge any per diem or food expenses beyond the narrow demands of the event I am attending.

As it should be.

Well, seems to me that if Sarah Palin attended a 5-hour conference, then she wasted taxpayer money to attend that all the way from Alaska.

But let’s cut her a break and say she deserved to go.

There’s a number of ways of looking at if from that basis:

1) she is entitled to expense money, but only her because it was just a 5-hour conference. Her expenses would be for two nights, plus meals during that 2-day stay.

2) she is entitled to expense money along with her daughter, but only if that daughter also attended the conference, for two nights plus meals.

What really messes this up is the extra days at a “luxury” hotel plus the kid. If she were forced to use regular business rules, she would be entitled to expenses at a business, ie, Marriot, hotel for 2 nights, plus her meals. The daughter’s meals come from her pocket, as do any additional nights at the hotel.

As for the snomobile race, well, heck! That’s something she ought to pay for 100%. She gets paid well. She can afford it. That’s not part of her job description, no more than paying for Todd’s pole dancing ladies is part of the cost of her being governor.

She needs to dig out her personal checkbook and pay her own way on things which are not part of the public business. Or should we also expect that she’ll charge the taxpayer for her political stumping?

I saw this on the Huffington Post in the comments section:

Want to find out how Sarah Palin became governor of Alaska? A great site I recommend about Palin is here –
http://dailysource.org/palinvideos

They have a lot of videos from Palin’s speeches, interviews and even some archival footage of her. They’ve done a lot of research to gather these videos at one location.

There is a huge amount of publicity about Sarah Palin and she”s definitely no typical woman. Yet there is a lot about her that people don”t know about.

More shoes to drop. Fancy Shmancy shoes, given the extent of her wardrobe upgrade from the McCain Campaign.

i posted a comment with a link to a story about the journalist seymour hersh in the just previous thread and then i re-posted it, thinking i was in this thread (will check skull for holes asap). here’s an excerpt which may spark your interest:

Like everyone in America just now, [Hersh] is on tenterhooks. A Democrat who truly despises the Bush regime, he is reluctant to make predictions about exactly what is going to happen in the forthcoming election on the grounds that he might ‘jinx it’. The unknown quantity of voter racism apart, however, he is hopeful that Obama will pull it off, and if he does, for Hersh this will be a starting gun. ‘You cannot believe how many people have told me to call them on 20 January [the date of the next president’s inauguration],’ he says, with relish. ‘[They say:] “You wanna know about abuses and violations? Call me then.” So that is what I’ll do, so long as nothing awful happens before the inauguration.’ He plans to write a book about the neocons and, though it won’t change anything – ‘They’ve got away with it, categorically; anyone who talks about prosecuting Bush and Cheney [for war crimes] is kidding themselves’ – it will reveal how the White House ‘set out to sabotage the system… It wasn’t that they found ways to manipulate Congressional oversight; they had conversations about ending the right of Congress to intervene.’

It was one of the few days of a cacophonous Campaign 2008 in which the hardcore themes of message politics converged and actually reinforced each other. Right before our eyes.

On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” we saw the distinguished former Army general and extinguished former secretary of state, Colin Powell. At the start of the 21st century, I thought he would be America’s ideal transformational president, as either a Republican (which he’d long been) or a Democrat.

But then the general undid himself, and us, by becoming the loyal soldier, publicly supporting George W. Bush’s Iraq war when he knew better. Even after learning he had misled the world with bum intelligence that Iraq still had weapons of mass destruction.

Even in 2004, when asked if he’d have supported invading Iraq knowing Saddam Hussein no longer had WMDs, Powell ducked: “I don’t know.”

Which led a certain Washington newspaper columnist to write: “Three years ago, The General rode into Foggy Bottom on a white horse. Today he’s riding a weasel. It is not a pretty sight.”

But on this autumn Sunday Powell was no longer riding side-straddle — but was back in the saddle again, riding tall atop the white stallion of truth that must be democracy’s ultimate straight-talk express.

He was a Republican endorsing Democrat Barack Obama for president. But his point-by-point endorsement was hardly the usual rah-rah. Powell said our next president must “start using …the power of his personality to convince the American people and to convince the world that America is…going to move forward.” He called Obama “a transformational figure…a new generation coming…onto the world stage.”

Powell expressed repeated disappointment with the judgment of his fellow Republican and friend, John McCain, in this campaign. On the economic crisis — “almost every day there was a different approach.” On picking Sarah Palin to be on-call as our next world leader — “I don’t believe she’s ready to be president of the United States.” And on McCain’s attack-politics, including Obama’s never-close ties to the 1960s anti-war terrorist Bill Ayers, who emerged as a widely praised education reform leader today — “Mr. McCain says that he’s a washed-out terrorist. Well, then, why do we keep talking about him? And why do we have these (GOP-sponsored telephone) robo-calls going on around the country…trying to connect him to is some kind of terrorist feelings? … I think that’s inappropriate.”

Click: On Fox News Sunday, McCain was demonstrating the validity of Powell’s points. No longer the happy warrior (where he is most appealing), McCain was tense and flashed angrily, repeatedly interrupting questions. On Ayers and his team’s automated phone calls — first McCain said “I don’t care about Mr. Ayers,” then, “We need to know the full extent of that relationship. That is an accurate robo-call…” On the request from his Maine co-chair, Sen. Susan Collins, to halt these robo-calls: “Of course not. These are legitimate and truthful.”

And a final click of the remote control showed us the final piece of our big picture politics. Obama praising Powell and gratefully accepting his endorsement: “He knows, as we do, that this is a moment where we all need to come together as a nation — young and old, rich and poor, black and white, Republican and Democrat.”

It was that final image-shift on our screens, from McCain to Obama, that was the ultimate confirmation of Powell’s central point about the need for this change. Obama, sitting in the Oval Office, will of course be generational and also presidential. But mainly, he will be the change most needed in these tumultuous times — the change Powell himself once might have been: transformational.

Are there any more surprises about a Palin? AKM – what is going to be next? Right now we have:
1. Expenses charged to the State for per diems and family travel for “official” business – like Todd’s snow machine races
2. Her abode most likely built gratis by the good old boy network of Wasilla
3. Her wardrobe (and that of her family, even the baby) paid for by the RNC – that would mean all those donations from individuals helping to make sure their “babe” is properly dressed
4. ?? Maybe she has been charging the State of Alaska for her taxidermy, you know, all those animal skins are a vital part of the office decor.

I used to be a state employee and there is no way that I would have gotten away with that kind of behavior. Granted, I wasn’t the governor, but this is a blatant abuse of taxpayer dollars. I was always permitted to bring my family with me on conferences, but I could not charge an extra room or their meals to the state. This is ridiculous. For someone that champions herself as a reformer and a fiscal conservative, her actions sure do speak louder than her annoying words.

Given how the rest of the country is cutting back on just about everything, how can the Republican party justify spending so much money on the Palin family? My kids would like new expensive clothes too but they understand the economy and how we all need to do our part and scale back. I am amazed how much my teenage son understands the economy and sees through the crap the Republican party is throwing out. He and his friends have been campaigning every weekend for Obama and this makes me proud. Even though he can’t vote this year, in the next election he will be an informed voter as he has established an excellent base to grow from.

As for Palin billing the state of Alaska for her kids airfare, hotels, etc., it leaves me speechless. Don’t understand how she thought she could get away with this. Very stupid if you ask me.

I love the new travelgate & wardrobegate news! Perfect! So unsurprising! Not on the list was the remodelinggate (the gov’s house in Juneau that a millionish dollars spent to remodel, first a$$hole & his buddies did the work, of course). I really really can’t wait for plasticsurgerygate to explode on the nat’l scene, as well. I posted a link several threads ago. Not something I’d ordinarily give much thought to, but I think it’s not outside the realm of possibility that a big ole plastic surgery bill was paid by the RNC so that she could check the “hotness” box on her VP application. Some photos on that site that made it quite clear that prior to May (or maybe March?) of this year she was looking her age — jowls & marionette lines between nose & mouth — and now she’s pretty tight & line-free. Amazing. Plastic surgery so that she could meet the needs of the GOP. One has to wonder, too, if any of that plastic surgery happened while she was pregnant (using that term loosely). And maybe that’s part of the reason that the medical records haven’t been released and won’t be released?

It’s obvious Cindy has had it and one can only surmise that she’s got self-esteem issues and is not about to let herself age gracefully considering her womanizing hubby, so who really cares. However, if Bible Spice was getting plastic surgery on the GOP dime so that she could suck in the votes of the republican men who are sexually frustrated, well, that’s kind of sick, don’t you think?

I’m with all of those who have said that if I’d donated to the GOP and knew that’s where my money was going I’d be waaaaay beyond angry.

Evidently the most important thing we can do is vote early…at an actual location…not by mail. Evidently, we are also supposed to avoid provisional ballots if at all possible. In addition, I think we need to stay awake, keep squawking, calling, writing about every single infraction we hear about. Here’s the web site for Robert Kennedy Jr.’s “comic book” about stealing back your vote. Evidently it takes you through every possible scenario and tells you what to do if that happens to you.

For those of you worried about any kind of shenanigans going on at polling places, I encourage you to become a pollworker and election judge for your county if you are able to do so. I have signed up to be a pollworker and democratic election judge here in Missouri. I live in a small, rural area, but I thought it would be good to be present to observe what happens and to be able to report any problems if they occur.

Michele aka, do we have to? Remember Florida 2000!

I’m trying to forget 2000 and 2004. In Florida in 2004, we had an awesome candidate for the US Senate, Betty Castor, who lost by one half of one percent, thanks for Rove and Bush. They put Republican Mel Martinez in the race, who if elected, would become the first Hispanic US Senator, because they wanted to make sure that there was no question that Bush would carry Florida.

Bush/Rove/Martinez beat Castor by trying to paint her as a terrorist sympathizer (sound familiar?).

John Kerry had no coat tails. In fact, Castor received 400,000 more votes than did John Kerry.

Martinez made us Floridians proud today. He jumped in the fray and referred to Obama as a socialist and communist. Way to go, Mel! Another outstanding pro-American Republican!

John McCain has cordially invited you all to place calls to undecided voters in all states and to deliver his message. I have made many, many calls to the folks on his list and have been very pleased with the feedback and the opportunity to speak to those that McCain views as possible votes in November.

It’s also nice that by working from their master list you can take away the opportunity for McCain/Palin nutters to spew their idiocy to undecided voters. The more you call, the less they do.

It may be inappropriate to make such a suggestion here at a legit site, but I don’t know where else to put the word out. /b/ didn’t seem too interested.

Phone away, and remember that most cell phone plans allow for unlimited long distance!!! Good luck!

Florida is particularly vulnerable to purges; the administration succeeded in making it that way by making “matching” ID compulsory. But there has been plenty of time for people to ensure that their drivers licence details match those on the electoral roll. Similarly, there has been time for non-drivers to get an ID from the DMV. It was something I was looking into myself a couple of months ago.

Obama’s campaign has been doing so much hard work for so long that I can’t believe that they don’t have these bases covered.

Nonetheless, I have everything crossed.😉

Got a new “Support John McCain” email — It does have a valid point

A president’s pension currently is $191,300 per year, until he is 80 years old.

Assuming the next president lives to age 80, Sen. McCain would receive ZERO pension as he would reach 80 at the end of two terms as president. Sen. Obama would be retired for 26 years after two terms and would receive $4,973,800 in pension.

Therefore it would certainly make economic sense to elect McCain in November. How’s that for non partisan thinking???

AP INVESTIGATION: Palin children traveled on state

By BRETT J. BLACKLEDGE, ADAM GOLDMAN and MATT APUZZO – 5 hours ago

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Gov.

As governor, Palin justified having the state pay for the travel of her daughters — Bristol, 17; Willow, 14; and Piper, 7 — by noting on travel forms that the girls had been invited to attend or participate in events on the governor’s schedule.

“The governor said, ‘I want the purpose and the reason for this travel to be clear,'” said Linda Perez, state director of administrative services.

When Palin released her family’s tax records as part of her vice presidential campaign, some tax experts questioned why she did not report the children’s state travel reimbursements as income.

The Palins released a review by a Washington attorney who said state law allows the children’s travel expenses to be reimbursed and not taxed when they conduct official state business.

Taylor Griffin, a McCain-Palin campaign spokesman, said Palin followed state policy allowing governors to charge for their children’s travel. He said the governor’s office has invitations requesting the family to attend some events, but he said he did not have them to provide.

In October 2007, Palin brought daughter Bristol along on a trip to New York for a women’s leadership conference. Plane tickets from Anchorage to La Guardia Airport for $1,385.11 were billed to the state, records show, and mother and daughter shared a room for four nights at the $707.29-per-night Essex House hotel, which overlooks Central Park.

The event’s organizers said Palin asked if she could bring her daughter.

Alexis Gelber, who organized Newsweek’s Third Annual Women & Leadership Conference, said she does not know how Bristol ended up attending. Gelber said invitees usually attend alone, but some ask if they can bring a relative or friend.

Griffin, the campaign spokesman, said he believes someone with the event personally sent an e-mail to Bristol inviting her, but he did not have it to provide. Records show Palin also met with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Goldman Sachs representatives and visited the New York Stock Exchange.

In January, the governor, Willow and Piper showed up at the Alaska Symphony of Seafood Buffet, an Anchorage gala to announce winners of an earlier seafood competition.

“She was just there,” said James Browning, executive director of Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation, which runs the event. Griffin said the governor’s office received an invitation that was not specifically addressed to anyone.

When Palin amended her children’s expense reports, she listed a role for the two girls at the function — “to draw two separate raffle tickets.”

In the original travel form, Palin listed a number of events that her children attended and said they were there “in official capacity helping.” She did not identify any specific roles for the girls.

In July, the governor charged the state $2,741.26 to take Bristol and Piper to Philadelphia for a meeting of the National Governors Association. The girls had their own room for five nights at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel for $215.46 a night, expense records show.

Expense forms describe the girls’ official purpose as “NGA Governor’s Youth Programs and family activities.” But those programs were activities designed to keep children busy, a service provided by the NGA

to accommodate governors and their families, NGA spokeswoman Jodi Omear said.

In addition to the commercial flights, the children have traveled dozens of times with Palin on a state plane. For these flights, the total cost of operating the plane, at $971 an hour, was about $55,000, according to state flight logs. The cost of operating the state plane does not increase when the children join their mother.

The organizer of an American Heart Association luncheon on Feb. 15 in Fairbanks said Palin asked to bring daughter Piper to the event, and the organizer said she was surprised when Palin showed up with daughter Willow and Bristol as well.

The three Palin daughters shared a room separate from their mother at the Princess Lodge in Fairbanks for two nights, at a cost to the state of $129 per night.

The luncheon took place before Palin’s husband, Todd, finished fourth in the 2,000-mile Iron Dog snowmobile race, also in Fairbanks. The family greeted him at the finish line.

When Palin showed up at the luncheon with not just Piper but also Willow and Bristol, organizers had to scramble to make room at the main table, said Janet Bartels, who set up the event.

“When it’s the governor, you just make it happen,” she said.

The state is already reviewing nearly $17,000 in per diem payments to Palin for more than 300 nights she slept at her own home, 40 miles from her satellite office in Anchorage.

Tony Knowles, a Democratic former governor of Alaska who lost to Palin in a 2006 bid to reclaim the job, said he never charged the state for his three children’s commercial flights or claimed their travel as official state business.

Knowles, who was governor from 1994 to 2002, is the only other recent Alaska governor who had school-age children while in office.

“There was no valid reason for the children to be along on state business,” said Knowles, a supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. “I cannot recall any instance during my eight years as governor where it would have been appropriate to claim they performed state business.”

Knowles said he brought his children to one NGA event while in office but didn’t charge the state for their trip.

In February 2007, the three girls flew from Juneau to Anchorage on Alaska Airlines. Palin charged the state for the $519.30 round-trip ticket for each girl, and noted on the expense form that the daughters accompanied her to “open the start of the Iron Dog race.”

The children and their mother then watched as Todd Palin and other racers started the competition, which Todd won that year. Palin later had the relevant expense forms changed to describe the girls’ business as “First Family official starter for the start of the Iron Dog race.”

The Palins began charging the state for commercial flights after the governor kept a 2006 campaign promise to sell a jet bought by her predecessor.

Palin put the jet up for sale on eBay, a move she later trumpeted in her star-making speech at the Republican National Convention, and it was ultimately sold by the state at a loss.

That left only one high-performance aircraft deemed safe enough for her to use — a 1980 twin-engine King Air assigned to the public safety agency but, according to flight logs, out of service for maintenance and repairs about a third of the time Palin has been governor.

I travel quite a bit for work & the time changes, eating out & sleeping in hotels do a number on me. A question re SP’s interview with Drew of CNN:

When he asked about Troopergate (which she called Tasergate), and the situation of Todd being so involved within the Governor’s office, she mentioned that he was only doing what every other citizen is told to do by reporting it to the proper department. (She forgot to mention he reported it and reported it and reported it again!!)). She said he was looking out for his family as Wooten had tasered his son, threatened her father and said ‘HE WOULD TAKE THE GOVERNOR DOWN’.

Is that not an embellishment by her as to ‘taking the Governor down’?

I thought all this took place long before she became Governor and might even have been before she ran for governor. If I recall, Todd started filing complaints the day after she took office.

Still remains she’s denying the ethics issue founded against her.

OK guys – just logged on – been reading AKM’s posts rather than all the comments… SO if this has been shared I apologize for the repeat — Republican Party spent THOUSANDS of dollars for a new Palin wardrobe (According to Keith O). Will look for the print link…

I am pretty sure the kiddies got clothing, too. They have to play the part, too.

Like I said earlier and someone backed me up, she’s Pretty Woman. Even if she can’t keep the clothes, five thou on her face and hair down the drain. As for how much Candy, excuse me, Cindy McCain spends on clothes, it’s her money, so it’s less heinous (though it’s still pretty disdainful).

You know who else Palin is? AIG. She just keeps on taking and spending no matter how often she gets bailed out.

Pah!

Sarah is the gift that keeps giving. Remember after she was selected that
Obama’s contributions soared. Everytime she opens her mouth she
shows she unqualified to be VP. (she still doesn’t know what a VP does)
Almost all the republicans, papers, etc. say the reason they won’t vote

Glenn2008, Biden was at a private fundraiser and made the comment that Obama will be “tested” within the first 6 months, that JFK and others were. This gave McCain the opportunity to seize the “Obama is inexperienced” argument. He must have forgotten that he forfeited that position with his gimmicky pick of Palin.

If Obama is tested, we will have a thoughtful, intelligent President to lead us. Imagine the unthinkable horror of a President Palin being tested.

Glenn2008-
Biden said crisis comment after Colin Powell said while endorsing Obama that both Bush and Clinton were tested with a crisis early on and that we should expect something that would test Obama given what history has shown us. McCain jumped on what Biden said and is using it to make it sound like the dems are planning some horrific thing that would destroy us all…dems included. It is totally insane and I it just gives Colin Powell another reason to vote for Obama, he can’t enjoy his words being twisted by McCain to attack Obama/Biden.

Ha! Deb, I was gonna say the same thing about the McCain/Palin women vid or just pass it by. Thanks for saying it.

Glenn2008, Biden said that the new prez will be tested in his first six months in office (which many pundits have said as well), and that he knows Obama can handle it. Of course, McCain is trying to spin it by lopping off the last part of the statement and somehow make it look as if Biden isn’t supporting Obama, or some crazy backass reasoning like that.

Glenn2008 (18:50:26) :
Does anyone know what the story of Biden’s statement on a “crisis” expected once Obama gets elected?
______________________________________________________________________
Glenn2008,
Biden stated that Obama would be tested after his election with some sort of international crisis. He also said that Obama has shown the judgment and steely spine to handle any such crisis. The McCain campaign pounced on it as some sort of gaffe, basically asserting that Obama’s election would make us “less safe.” I think we will have an international crisis no matter who is elected president.
Here is my analysis from a previous thread:

Most of the Biden “gaffes” are manufactured by the media so they can keep the narrative of Biden that they want to spin and sell. He did not say anything that was untrue, nor damaging of Obama’s abilities. We will be tested no matter who becomes elected and he just wanted to put that out there ahead of time. If some international event occurs after the election and Obama wins, then people will say, ” See we aren’t safe because this happened because Obama is President.” By being realistic and letting people know that this will happen anyway, it neutralizes a knee-jerk reaction that this happened because of Obama.

I am an independent that supported Biden during the primaries. I have followed him closely and have heard him say this on many occasions, not just this past weekend. It is telling that they are just now trying to jump on this comment because they are grasping at straws. As always, they took his comment out of context and didn’t let the rest of it play out. He added that Obama has the judgment to pass any international crisis test. I am actually supporting Obama because of his pick of Biden as VP. They make a great team. Do not let the media spin machine make you think otherwise. Biden supports Obama and it is obvious. People need to be more analytical and not so reactionary.

My cousin works as an Assistant to a Fashion Consultant for Palin and she sent me this email:

Hey there —- !

It’s crazy in the McCain-Palin campaign. There’s lots of infighting around Palin’s look.

Like I told you before, after she crashed on the CBS and ABC interviews Rick Davis wanted to give her a new start after the VP Debate so he hired several Fashion Consultants to throw the American people into thinking they’re looking at a different person so they agreed to let her wear her hair down and different earrings. They assume the American people would not associate her with the ‘In what respect Charlie?’ or the reading newspapers or the Supreme Court incident.

They are actually studying responses to see how many people are talking about the ‘hair up’ Sarah verses the ‘hair down’ Sarah. I’m sending a few of my associates emails to let them know this is the same dizzy nasty person who by the way does not wash her hands after using the bathroom and manipulate her children into playing the victim card for votes. Rick Davis gives Sarah a list of things he wants her to attack ‘O’ on then ask if she’s comfortable with it, of course she says yes but I think she’s planning her run in 2012, she doesn’t look like she’s comfortable supporting McCain. She normally turns up her tattooed lips when she speaks about him behind closed doors.

Don’t believe everything you see on TV, Todd is a wimp. She treats him like a throw rug but he’ll put up with it, I don’t know why.

After this election season is over several people close to Palin will be writing books about what a nasty person she is. She looks clean on the outside but very nasty behind closed doors. Her hygiene needs improvement.

All this stuff that Wooten is accused of goes way back. The Palins have been harrassing him for years.
But it wasn’t until she become Governor that it all came to a head with Monegan and the investigations.
So I could see Wooten making that kind of comment with regard to the outcome of those investigations.

Thank you for your comments on Biden. I have just seen on Fox (almost embarrassed to admit I watched) how it got spinned to “why would you then vote for Obama/Biden?”.

The spin just amazes me – and not just on this topic…

While the Ayers and Right “cards” continue to flood us, I just wonder when we will hear about McCain associations:

-Georgia lobbyist Randy Scheunemann, top foreign policy advisor (gave great advise to Georgia…)
-Saddam lobbyist William Timmons, presidential transition team (presumably bringing foreign experience?…)
-Fennie lobbyist Rick Davis, campaign manager (paid until the last moment)
-First Dude, AIP (why did this go so quiet?)

So the Empress has new clothes … too bad we’re all seeing her naked and it’s not a pretty sight! If they’re spending that much, why are all her blouses so tight?

Right after Cindy Mc and Laura B appeared at the RNC in Sept., I read that Cindy’s outfit (the weird gold spacegirl outfit) cost her $430,000 compared to laura B’s $4000 ensemble. That included everthing from watch to Bruno Magli shoes to the wacky designer outfit.

So, if you look at it another way, the RNC is getting a bargain by “only” spending $150K on clothes for the Empress. I wonder who’s paying for Cindy’s clothes? At $400,000/appearance…millions.

That’s priceless and a great use of their donations. Maybe they’ll auction their clothes off on eBay beginning Nov 5 !

$150,000 would pay my property taxes for 577 years.
It would buy 42,857 gallons of whole milk. That’s 297 years’ worth, for me.
It would buy the gas for my truck, at my current budgeted rate per month, for 313 years.
It’s the 284-year equivalent of what the food stamps people find adequate for me per month (after the recent up-jack of benefits).
It would pay for getting my piano tuned 1,364 times.
It would pay for 147 years’ worth of the electricity I use to power this household, pump water, and run the septic pump station.

I’m speechless. My mind is fried. What would $150,000 buy in your world?

The $150,000. in clothing and the $21, 000. in per diem for the kids is most likely Taxable Income they need to report on their tax return. Also if the per diem for the Iron Dog snowmobile race was paid and I recall the deductions on their tax returns showed the snowmobile racing as a business deductin isn’t this the same expense. I thing they have claimed it as a tax deductable expense and also had the tax payers cover it as per diem. This may be either tax fraud or filing a false public voucher or possibly both.

I wonder how the rank and file Republican voter, who has donated to the McCain campaign feels seeing this large expense for clothing etc.? and I wonder how the RNC can call DEMS elitists in this situation? shameful.

And regardless of what the tax laws of AK maybe, I have to think that the clothing is taxable, unless it is a loan. She would have to report it as it is more than the amount allowed for a “gift”. And, add the per diems, the travel expenses, I think those items may be subject to federal taxes.

I just can’t imagine that most women can read about these expenses and not get angry out here in the Heartland! 😦

Even in the Republican version of “real hard-working and God-fearing America” women are usually the ones who cut back on clothing when finances are tight. Most of my friends have to wait till clothes go on clearance before they buy anything! This is outrageous.

Sick of Palin

I am so sick of Palin and her ‘First Family’ speech. I don’t remember any past governor heralding the words ‘First Famiy’ at every opportunity. I never even considered the position of governor being ‘First’ anything. The only ‘First’, I know of is the President of the United States and the’First Lady.’

Queen Palin needs to climb down off her high horse before I kick her off it.
I really am tired of her. Impeachment anyone?

21 10 2008
SMR

I guess that the most that we can hope for is that some of the women out there struggling to make ends meet, the ones who thought she was “a breath of fresh air” and “just like me,” will now see her for what she really is. I think it was about a zillion threads ago that I said that she was smoke & mirrors and the emperor’s (McLame’s) new clothes. Turns out to be literally AND figuratively true! All of the religious fundies were standing around saying “wow, look at that great outfit he’s wearing, now he’s one of us!” maybe the ones who are really really struggling will rethink that.

I had to scoff at all of those (not on this site of course) who were so thrilled with her charitable contribution of $8000 to Salvation Army (“twice as much as Joe Biden!”). When our household shipment arrived (after a 3-month wait) from the UK and I had to contemplate finding a spot for all of that stuff in our new house my brain froze up! I immediately listed things on freecycle.org (practically new chest freezer that we’d loaned my parents while we were overseas, old child bicycle carrier, chef’s rack, etc etc etc). Boxes & boxes & boxes to the local women’s shelter. Tons of other things went to Salvation Army. At the shelter & at Salvation Army you hand them your boxes, and they hand you a receipt that they’ve signed with the value left blank for you to determine. I could have said that it was $10,000 worth of stuff and who’s to know differently?! I certainly could have sold all of that stuff on craigslist or in the classifieds for thousands altogether, but I think if you total up all of the receipts we maybe claimed it as $800 or so. My theory is that when she moved into her nice big new house she needed to get rid of a bunch of old stuff (baby crib!?), took it down to the local Salvation Army and wrote the amount as $8000. I don’t think for a minute that those two heartless people actually wrote out a check or anything! Besides, where was her 10% tithing? That wasn’t anywhere on her list of charitable donations!

She is 100% full of sh!t through & through. She is no real Christian in my book, she is one of the phony ones, the type who caused me to take a time-out on religion until I could come to grips with the huge amount of horrible christians that I was encountering regularly vs. the 2 or 3 great ones that I encountered regularly. I’m still in time-out, and don’t anticipate getting out of it until after this election is over.

And by the way, good point, whoever made it, about wasn’t Bristol supposedly laid up with mono for 5 months, last Jan thru May? That was the official story, anyway. Well enough to travel, yet not well enough to attend school. Weird.

@Zim/LA: There are lots of native kuspuks that are brightly-colored and in cotton. I’ve seen plenty in pink, purple, you name it. That wouldn’t necessarily be a traditional version, but the street version, same style & cut, but I guess in a color that it more “appealing” or “fashionable” ??? Give me black any day… They are not really very easy to find, I think the majority are probably custom-made. When my daughter was 4 or 5 I bought her a custom-made kuspuk that was in adorable little girl fabric, and bought a smaller identical one for her cousin. They were so cute! A lady was making/selling them at one of the holiday bazaars. I wish that I knew how to get one for my new toddler! Now that I think about it perhaps I should do some hunting around, it would be a great xmas gift. Nothing cuter on kids, but never really got into them on adults. However, there is someone in Anchorage who makes them (can’t remember her name), you pick out the fabric, takes ages, she charges a fortune. There are some really amazing native artworks around town. The Native hospital has a lovely shop that sells baskets & other beautiful handmade things. No disrespect intended with my initial snark. More to my point: do non-Native people commonly wear “fashionized” kuspuks day-to-day? I did not notice that when I was in AK this past August. Granted, I was in more “touristy” venues but….

I can’t believe it when State Finance Director Kim Ganaro said she has not reviewed Paliln’s travel expense forms! These allegations, along with the per diem she charged the state while staying at home, have been floating around for at least a month now. You’d have thought that that would have been the red light that would have had her scrambling through those records – if nothing else, so she could be on top of the situation! Just think, if she becomes VP, all the flights from ANC to DC the taxpayers will have to pay for!

Alaska residents better rise up and get some reform on these issues!

22 10 2008
tigerwine

Regarding the kuspuk Palin is wearing: It is a traditional top worn by AK native women. It can be thigh length with a ruffle, or jacket length. It can have a hood or not. Think of it as a “hoodie” and you get a better picture.

There is no zipper, buttons, etc, and has the traditional pocket in the front to keep you hands warm! Often the pocket and arm bands are decorated with rick-rack. And, yes, hot pink is hot in AK! I had a hot pink kuspuk myself!

It’s a very versatile garment, and can be made of fur, leather or, for indoor/warm weather from cottons. I used to work for Cooperative Extension Service, and they had a pattern for it. Also some commercial patterns (Alaskan) are available.

22 10 2008
avahome

So is the RNC paying for her clothes or the McCain publicly funded campaign? Will she claim them as gifts on her 1040?

Regarding travel expenses…who is going to question her on the state level? Couldn’t she have cause to fire them for questioning her travel dispursements? Furthermore, Alaskans better stay on top of these expense reports or else it all goes away…..

Hi folks!

This is my first comment to “THE blog” . . . although i have been following “Mudflats” for some time now.

As a former Yukoner and true ‘sourdough’ . . . (my father served with the military out of Whitehorse when the Canadian Army was responsible for the maintenance of “our” part of the Alaska Highway) . . . and therefore frequent visitor to your fine state, I follow your news and views with great interest, particularly during this facinating election race.

I believe, as obviously so many of your loyal bloggers do, that if McCain-Palin win the day we will be singing ‘God Help America’, and perhaps more aptly, ‘God Help the World’.

I have helped my dear wife raise four wonderful kids and so, if someone else hasn’t already done so, I suggest from experience, and from the stench that it must be creating, that you might refer to the brewing scandal involving “Palin Charges State for Chidren’s Travel” as ‘Poopergate’.

Why not look at Palin, her children, and husband? This story is embematic of her sense of entitlement and utter disregard for those she supposedly represents. Is this what this country needs from its highest office holders? No, no, and no. Spending taxpayers’ money for personal gain is unethical at best, and illegal at worst. She has proven time after time that she nothing more than a self-serving, vindictive person who has risen (politically) above her abilities to serve a constituency, any constituency. Also, the fact that she pals around with terrorists (Alaska Secessionists) who would see this country desolving and devolving is more reason to keep this person marginalized. Her sick views and lack of knowledge are frightening aspects of the worst that the far right has to offer. I’m sorry but I don’t see her as having any attraction whatsoever.
