Rain Gear Rally for Obama in Juneau!

20 10 2008

When I got an email a couple weeks ago from the organizer of the Obama rally in Juneau that happened this past Saturday, I thought to myself, “Why are they calling it a Rain Gear Rally?”  It’s two weeks from now…how do they know?  Then I remembered.  It’s Juneau.

And sure enough, those intrepid waterproof souls we know as Juneau Democrats, braved the freezing rain and wind, and were out there for the cause.  A big wave from your compatriots in the north, Juneau! Keep up the good work!

Great looking signs. I am envious of Alaskan signs. Always so individual. Really need to keep them and have a retrospective show….during Obama’s second term.

You know what I love most about Obama rallies (besides how much fun people seem to be having}? It’s how diverse the crowd is. Young, old, black, white, Asian, Latino, First Nation, gay, straight, bi, etc. Obama rallies reflect the diversity of our country while McCain/Palin rallies mostly show older white people.

You go, Juneau!

Oh, and Ira2, I agree. Hectoring older people into voting how you want them to vote (as their priests, preacher, pastors, etc.) is despicable.

@Aussie Puck Mule Hussein, haha, I was thinking the same thing about the last guy with the nice smile and the red sign. I like dark hair.

@mhrt oregon, I don’t think AK will go blue, but it’s sure getting a lot closer!

@Vlad the I’m HUSSEIN Palin, if Palin really reads “The Economist”, then she can advise McCain on what the article says. By the way, “They are trying to find a way for McCain to win without votes”, that’s hysterical. But then I thought, that’s how W. got the job the first time!

And angry wingnuts on the left tend to hide out in the western New Mexico forest or in the northwestern Arizona desert, muttering and steaming and folding tinfoil hats, whereas angry wingnuts on the right go beat people up or blow clinics up or torch churches. Unless that’s changed in the years since I last had TV. (Didn’t need TV to know about the ones in the NM forest though.)

@ira2, yup, that’s about it. Our wingnuts are loony, but strangely lovable. Their wingnuts are loony and dangerous.

@mhrt oregon, if Alaska goes blue (the whole of it, and not just parts of it), then it WILL be the end of times. However, thanks to AKM and other progressive Alaskans, it’s turning lighter red day by day.

Yup, it was rainy, but fun and upbeat and rainy. Oops, said that part already (it’s just that it really was; we’re in the middle of the fourth wettest year on record and still have 2 1/2 months to go 😦 ). And someone came out before the rally and said he’d roasted a whole pig that he wanted to donate to feed the rally participants after we were done (sorry if that offends any of our vegetarian mudpuppies). It was amazingly delicious!

You are all such special people, keep up the spirit, I can almost see it…AK going blue. I received a little unexpected income today, so went ahead and donated to Mudflats and the next AK Demo Senator. I think I’ll give a little to Min tomorrow. I can’t get these Demo’s in ID to even put Obama on their websites, so I’m focused on swing states and doing what I can there. I wrote to our local news paper editor and he says he understands why the local dems don’t support Obama. He thinks maybe their chances of getting elected are better if no one knows they are Democrats. What kind of nonsense is that? I’m proud to be a Democrat and want everyone to know I proudly voting for Obama and Biden.

Well, thank you! I’m honored to be in such good company! 🙂 AKM

Salt Lake City continues to put it out there …

Krugman: GOP does little for working Americans, including plumbers

“Forty years ago, Richard Nixon made a remarkable marketing discovery. By exploiting America’s divisions – divisions over Vietnam, divisions over cultural change and, above all, racial divisions – he was able to reinvent the Republican brand. The party of plutocrats was repackaged as the party of the ”silent majority,” the regular guys – white guys, it went without saying – who didn’t like the social changes taking place.

It was a winning formula. And the great thing was that the new packaging didn’t require any change in the product’s actual contents – in fact, the GOP was able to keep winning elections even as its actual policies became more pro-plutocrat, and less favorable to working Americans, than ever.”

Good morning from the other side of the world – where it is now raining too. That means Marty the Boston pouts all day.

I just read that Obama and Hillary drew a crowd of 60,000 people in Orlando, Fla yesterday, 8,000 in Tampa. Not bad! If any of you Floridians have the latest on the state of the State please let me know. I am so anxious.

I have started flooding my mom with links to videos and e-mails with quotes and truths (I am a one-woman truth squad!) and am just praying that she watches and reads. My brother worked the phone banks for Obama this weekend in NY.

Did everyone see that Jim Brady endorsed Obama/Biden? And after Powell, will other Republicans get up the courage and endorse Obama, too?

Thanks for the encouragement – but the terrible part of it is that my mom is and has always been a die-hard true-blue Democrat! Never voted Repub, hates Bush. What happened? All I can guess is that for some strange Twilight Zone sort of reason, she has been watching more and more Fox since 2004, and loves Bill O’Reilly (“he’s really fair and presents both sides of every issue” gag me!) and I suspect she watches Hannity! She gets angry whenever I or my bro visit and we don’t allow her to watch Bill or Fox!

Some vile acquaintance of hers sends her ALL of the Obama smear e-mails. All of them, and so it has sunken in, partly I suspect and fear because Obama is black! It is weird that these ladies, no matter how unhappy they are with this administration, no matter how much they hate Bush and how bad they know things are, they still can doubt Obama…

I have some really great news to report, Mud puppies! My husband (we live in San Francisco) is over in Reno, Nevada, observing early voting for the Obama campaign. Nevada allowed voters to go to polling places and vote beginning Oct. 17. The location at which my husband is observing saw a heavy, steady stream of voters all day Saturday and today too. I’d rather not identify where he is working so as to protect his anonimity. There are Republican observers too. Everyone is being cordial and civil to each other, as it should be. It seems to be overlooked – but last Saturday (Oct 18) was ALASKA DAY!!!!!

It is the day that Russia turned over Alaska to the US in 1867 (this is part of what gives us our vast international expertise)

Here in Sitka (the actual place it happened) we had our big Alaska Day parade and the Sitka Democrats were well represented! I’ll try to get some pictures – I was in the parade and we had a friendly reception from the crowd!

Deborah Bonito – who is married to Mark Begich, the senatorial candidate running against Ted Stevens – was with us. It actually did not rain during the parade!!!!!!

BTW – for anyone who wants to make an impact on the next senate or congress – Alaska is a really cheap media market so your contribution will go far!

MO was all out of love ……

McCain is fighting Obama’s momentum in Missouri

A.M.
Two days after Barack Obama drew 100,000 supporters to a rally in St. Louis, John McCain attracted about 2,500 people to a field in this nearby suburb Monday, a visible symbol of the challenge the Republican nominee faces in this crucial state.

P.M.
In a rally that barely filled the corner of a high school football field in Belton, McCain derided comments by Joe Biden, Obama’s running mate. Biden said, if elected, Obama would be tested by an international crisis within his first six months and would need supporters to “stand with him” as he made difficult and perhaps unpopular decisions.

Why do you think this is a good article? It’s pro-McCain, anti-Obama.

LA (23:38:10) : Dare we hope that Nevada will be blue….the polls are saying it will.

Check out one of my favorite tracking sites. It’s Intrade, where people actually buy and sell shares in predicting the electoral vote changes as well as the percentage of success for the candidates. The Intrade percentage of success for Obama vs McCain is always on the RealClearPolitics site. It tracks 24/7 in real time and some consider it more accurate than polls since people can say anything in a poll, but on Intrade they think seriously about the percentages and lay real money down for their decisions.

You can click on any of the states and instantly see the current odds for Dems vs Reps, along with other info. If you scroll down the page you’ll see the percentages for Obama vs. McCain. Here’s the link:

http://www.intrade.com/

BTW, the market prediction for a blue Nevada is 77% at the moment!

End the End Times

I suspect (being a Juneau person) that there were quite a few who attended the rally who didn’t belong to a party. (I know I don’t) I think that would make Senator Obama happy. His speech today was amazing–at times he seems better at transporting the audience than the Kennedys I think. Is that because we are living these times, or is it this magical thing about Obama, or a combination of things?

Peter, in Ketchikan–I agree. Ketchikan often wins the rain contest. I lived there for a wee bit too. It is certainly part of the rain forest, our Alaskan freezing kind.

I’d like to thank MinNJ Moose Roadster for the kind remark about the name Juneau. (Such is the stuff that keeps us going in our little town) It certainly sounds like home to me, having grown up here. And there is at least another town in the U.S. named Juneau, yes? I’m sure many prayers will come from here for Senator Obama’s grandmother. Hope we can all send a lot of love his way.

Great to see. When I hear (referencing the previous post) Palin say she doesn’t sit in the seat of judgment of gays who want to be married, then indicates she’s going do what she can to stop them–I know your governor is not playing with a full deck. I’d rather be judged by someone than have them do something to me. Andrew Sullivan has her and her lying pegged. So, much appreciation for the public support for Obama in Alaska and the growing outrage over Palin. And following her example, let’s not judge her, let’s show her the door next election.

End the End Times:

There is a Village of Juneau in PA! After I moved here from Juneau, we took a drive and it was such a cute widening in the road!

Lovely Juneau, miss it dearly…enjoy listening in on all the chatter in this sanity saving blog…this is where I come for the real, clear truths and balanced views…
positive vibes for a better government, that is what the people of every section of America want and deserve… Juneau is an active community in voicing it’s opinions, rain or shine, it speaks the truth for all who want to listen…Yeah! for Juneau, always colorful in the rain, very blue, in fact!

I am always late on these threads cause it is overwhelming for me to read and follow links etc., there’s so much info out here, where we hang out…it tires me, it stresses me, it boggles my mind, raises my blood pressure…so it is wonderful to come back to mudflats and see happy people holding their Obama signs in the rain…that is what I call ethereal:)

All those signs. McCainiacs must be thinking “So amateur”. But I’m thinking “authentic” and “grass roots”. This is the way all campaigns should be run. Not from the top down, but from the bottom up. Go Obama/Biden 2008.

The Juneau rallies always seem to be such a bright splotch of color on a gray (albeit beautiful!) Alaska day! I know it’s been said so often, but those signs- just wonderful! And the painted “Muddie” boots looked like Native American folk art!

My heart goes out to the “4th/5th” generation Alaskan gal. May her little one be born into better times, the era of Obama!

@mhrt oregon (22:57:45) :

Ah, I lived in Salem for 6 years. Lovely place, great fruit in the summers, and yup, not nearly as much rain as here… Drop a line if you ever manage to plan a trip up here; we love playing tour guide. And, I have Bay Area rellies too!

@Peter (23:14:39) :

We usually get over 100 inches of PRECIPITATION in the year. Our avg. for rain (on its own, not melted snow=rain equiv.) is ~44 inches. We’re at 55+ already for the year. And that’s only where they official measure at the airport. The numbers for downtown are prob. twice that… But I agree, Ketchikan is WAY rainier! I love the rain, but not enough to live there (kind of like I like the cold in winter, but not enough to live in Fairbanks!).

@End the End Times (01:20:16) :

Yup, there is a Juneau in Wisconsin that is named for someone else from the same family as ours was named (Joe’s cousin or uncle or something). There’s also a Juno (for the Roman goddess) in Texas.

@Grammy (04:57:46) :

Wow, there’s really a Juneau in PA? How cool.

@arbo (06:44:46) : Juneau prob. misses you too…

@ NMJ – I read all articles – I found it was funny how the Economist refered to Mz Palin – perhaps you missed it.

” He needs to dump the dumb populism (even though it seems to be too late, alas, to dump the dumb populist-in-chief, Sarah Palin.) “

Had a dinner date and got coffee (asked for no caffeine, but got it) so here I am. And wide awake at 2:55 more or less here (all the clocks are different in this house, and I don’t mind.)

That reminded me of the same thing happening to me and a guy I was dating in 1996. We were both up until 3AM, saying “that definitely wasn’t decaf!” It was an Italian restaurant at 66th and 2nd in NYC, one of our first dates…before he taught me how to surf the internet. Now, it’s me and my kitties doing the late nights without any caffiene. All three of us are hoping Obama wins, his grandma lives and the world rejoices in America coming out of it’s insanity period.

I think this article is saying “adios” to McCain, even though it is telling McCain what he should do, and it’s pretty much too late.
