“Mudstock” Report and Photos from Pittsburgh!

20 10 2008

On Friday, a group of devoted Mudflatters in the Pittsburgh area decided that they’d like to meet up, speak to each other in real audible words, enjoy each others physical company, and put a face, instead of a snowflake avatar, with the name. HamletsMill was the organizational brain behind this event and sent photos and a great story (see below).

So, let’s hear from HamletsMill about Mudstock Pittsburgh!

Friday night’s Mini-Mudstock three hour event held at Rolands in the famous Strip District of Pittsburgh was a wonderful celebration of the amazing worldwide Mudflats phenomenon! We are sure many of you were there in spirit worldwide!

Eleven Mudpuppies and their MudGuests came to commiserate in person!

By professions identified, we had three lawyers, two university professors, a medical doctor, a nurse, a software engineer, an automotive structural engineer, and an architectural construction planner!

The dinner conversation was lively and the food was first rate!

We originally had thirteen signed up, but two had to cancel due to catching colds during the toxic spill evacuation in a town 40 miles north of Pittsburgh which made the national news earlier this week. (Hmmm. Was this a direct Rovian National Security conspiracy to affect our MudStock turnout?)

Our two very special guests from the local Obama Campaign asked that in this write-up we stress to everyone out there across the nation to try to help with the GOTV (Get Out the Vote) efforts in your area if you can. Over 400 people have shown up in Pittsburgh to help with this where they have set up individual three hour slots to knock on doors to encourage identified voters to vote. A volunteer can take one three hour slot. Each identified voter will be visited four times by different volunteers. People are also needed to drive people in their local area to the polls on November 4th. Otherwise, just keep doing what you’re doing, with as much juice as you can summon! Anything helps!
We all agreed in passionate discussion that with the dire problems we are facing, this is the most important election since 1932.

We all had such a good time that we have agreed to meet again a week to ten days after the election to re-orient and re-adjust our energies, based upon the outcome. Hopefully it will be health food and back rubs for all, rather than a fifth of Jack Daniels! But none of us can let up for an instant now. Everyone just do what you can!

At the end of the night, four of us were talking with our coats on, when our undecided Libertarian waiter came over smiling to tell us that he found us so interesting and compelling a group, and just loved waiting on us so much that he said he is now going to vote for Barack Obama! Wow! It was a very loving moment! (He also loved our very nice tip because we enjoyed him so much too! Hey…and such a nice tip from us after the ongoing Wall Street meltdown hell!)

We don’t know if we were the first place to hold a Mini-MudStock in celebration of AKM’s amazing Mudflats Blog phenomenon, but we hope we will be the first of many local get-togethers WORLDWIDE as we all go forward after the election.

And, finally, in our report we must bring up the Washington Redskins Election Predictor Legend from 1936 onward since the Pittsburgh Steelers play the Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football on Election Eve November 3rd, 2008.

Check out the analysis on Snopes.

The Washington Redskins Election Predictor Legend was true for 68 straight years, but did NOT hold in 2004. So it appears the Steelers are off the hook!

However, we are thinking a NEW PREDICTOR TRADITION may emerge! This is that if the Washington Redskins lose in the re-establishment of the accuracy count it will be a CRUSHING LANDSLIDE NATIONAL MANDATE VICTORY by the Party coming back into power!

Since Mr. Dan Rooney, General Manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers, gave Barack and Michelle Obama a Terrible Towel when they visited Pittsburgh during the Pennsylvania Primary, we MudBurghers have decided to take it upon ourselves to offer a special dispensation by the Steeler Nation that anyone here who TWIRLS ANY CLOTH MATERIAL OF ANY KIND on Election Eve during that game, it will count as a Terrible Towel! We are asking that even you Dallas, Boston, Indianapolis, and (we know it is tough) Cleveland fans put past differences aside and all be terrible towel-waving FANATIC STEELER FANS for this one night of your life! We must pull together on every Cosmic level. Even this! Just sayin’!

We send loving greeting to all Mudpuppies worldwide!

We are getting some attention here in our neighborhood too. Someone abused our Obama/Biden sign. We picked it up, dusted it off and it’s back in place with battle scars and all.

It the first day of early voting here in CO. I’ll be at our library to vote tomorrow if the creek don’t rise.

Forgive my ignorance please, but what is a Terrible Towel? And are non-US citizens allowed to twirl them? What with the time difference here in the UK, I’ll probably be tucked up in bed by that time – I can’t stay up all night two nights in a row, I need all my strength for the 4th!

BUT, if for any reason I can’t sleep that night, I’d love to twirl in solidarity with you! We have some fairly terrible towels in this household (I blame the moths).

Wonderful to see a Pittsburgh Mudstock. I hope to attend the National Mudstock Nation Celebration which, I believe, is tentatively set for Anchorage this coming July. I’ll help organize the “Pallin’ Around With The Palins” Event, featuring the “First Annual Todd Palin Memorial Stalkin’ Yer In-Laws” Contest! I also hope to be able to get Brian-the-Moose’s hoof-o-graph.

Hello Pittsburgh Mudpuppies..

I must let you guys know, even though my wife has STEELRZ on her license plates, I’ve lived and breathed burgundy and gold my whole life, so whatever the election karma is, the skins will win on the 3rd.🙂 I would hate to think that us in the DC area would jinx things, but we’re on a roll and can’t give up a game to the burgh in the sake of Obama win.. It’s just not possible..!

We can, however root that the Pokes lose thus starting a new tradition.. !

Being a tad more serious, it’s wonderful that people from a blog in Alaska meet and find a common denominator, and that’s in our mutual hatred for the McFailin ticket and the desire to get Obama in the whitehouse.

One thing I’ve seen over the past few months and we can discuss civilly things political. Yet, the other side of the ticket seems to have no concept in the theory of American Politics. To repugs, there is no discussion or fairness. It’s about believing the lies, accepting them as gospel and screw anyone who thinks there is an option. Listening to Fox news or Rush, and not having the ability to accept the possibility there is another view that has validity. Instead, they call us socialists, traitors, or worse. I’ve never seen ANYONE call people from the repugs anything rude, and no one’s ever dared to say KILL McCain. It’s just not in our vocabulary. How sad those people must be.

And the point? I wonder what a meeting of repugs off a blog would be like? Something similar to a Nazi Party rally? Hate, screaming at Dems, calling us names and raising their arms to Hiel McFailn?

There is hope for America, but right now, mcgrumpy has created such an atmosphere of racism, hate and fright in the US, that we don’t know how things will end up playing out. Lets hope for more upbeat, and spirited discussions and leave the people too stupid to want to even look at other viewpoints to drink more of the repug kool aid.

I’m in VA, too bad i didn’t think of doing that in this area.!

Hmmm – interesting stuff about the Redskins Election Prediction. As a lifelong Redskins fan, I am pleased to know they are poised to play a decisive role in the election. But I think we should be pulling for them to win, however that fits in with a landslide win for Obama. After all, the Redskins are the home team for most (maybe all?) of Virginia, and they say if Obama wins VA he wins the election!

Go team!

Deep. i thought it said if the skins lose their last home game before the election, then the opposing party wins, which means we’d have to lose to the steelers to uphold that tradition. Did i read it wrong?

I’m a Skins fan way back to the day of Sonny and Billy. When George Allen coached, even when the great one, Vince Lombardi coached for a year here.

But, if the tradition means the skins have to lose, there’s gonna be a problem..!🙂 hahahah Im not sure Zorn will go along with it.

BTW, I signed up with the group called http://www.colorofchange.org. They are organizing people to petition to the RNC and McCain/Palin campaign to stop the robocalls and other hate filled ads.

They sent me an email providing those who sign up with phone number to both the RNC and Mccain and script as to what to say. Basically it says how outraged you are about the robocalls, etc and how hatefilled and divisive it is and they s hould stop. They then ask to submit a survey of what happened when you call, (left a message, talked to someone, , what was the response, etc) They are planning to submit to the press.

So for those who want to participate, go to http://www.colorofchange.org.

They can’t win, so they will make this about HATE and Evil.

McHates daddy and granddaddy were both Admirals and they must look down at this dispicable excuse for a Naval Officer and they must sit and cry.

How this excuse for a man could have his logo, Country First everywhere is just as big a sham as is his candidacy. Lies do not make a political campaign, unless apparently, you’re in the GOP, the party of Liars.

St. Louis for Barack

Does Sarah Palin have an autistic child!!!!??????
We all heard about her Downs Syndrome child when we first met her. However, during the third debate, McCain stated “she knows all about autism” on at least three occassions. His tone indicated that she had personal knowledge. I was floored to think she has another special needs child and we have not heard about it. If she has one, then why is she hiding it??? If she does not have an autistic child, this is another indication that John McCain is out of touch and just does not get it. I venture to guess this is further proof that he is not all there. There should be no room for confusion as they are totally distinct conditions.

What “Linda (Celtic Diva) (13:00:32) :” said is true, many Northerners (Alaskans and others not so northern) suffer from SAD. Spouse “goes on” the box light every fall to spring (no drugs there, but boy does the light help!). SWWNBN seems to think that a tanning bed will help her with her SAD, even though scientists (yes, those evil scientists) say that that kind of light doesn’t help SAD!

Sigh…
Makes me miss Pittsburgh, where I spent a year in graduate school 1987-88. I was quite poor, at the time, but enjoyed it nevertheless. Especially the Strip District. I lived in Highland Park, went to Pitt (scholarship!), worked on the North Side and checked out every inch of the place that I could in the 12 months I spent there.
Hell, if somebody’d offered me a halfway decent job, I’d probably have stayed.

BTW, marksmyword–
one of my friends in Pgh had a dad who was a steelworker, he had a tattoo on his arm that said “Pittsburg”
I have no idea why he never got it corrected, didn’t have the nerve to ask

I am so proud of my fellow Pennsylvanians – way to go! I, like Rose in PA, live on the eastern side of the state or I would have loved to be there with my fellow Mudburghers.

About rooting against the Redskins – sorry, just can’t do it. I grew up in NoVA and am a lifelong Redskins fan, yes, back to the days of Sonny Jurgenson and Billy Kilmer (Eagles-Redskins game days are not pretty around here!). I do root for the Steelers when they’re not playing the ‘Skins – does that count?

I’m so gratified when I drive around my (formerly) uber-Republican county and see all the Obama signs – PA rocks!

Totally understood! There are some things we just can’t ask a fellow human being to do and we won’t! And as I said, the Green Bay Packers derailed the 68 straight years accurate legend in 2004 so actually BOTH the Steelers AND the Redskins are OFF the Cosmic hook if anyone wants to get technical about it! Hummm. Maybe that in itself means a NEW PARADIGM shift? So we will both come up with some new interpretation!

But, yes, rooting for the Steelers when they’re not playing the ‘Skins DOES indeed count!

That is exactly how we feel about Indianapolis here. After all, it is a work ethic team too like us. And Tony Dungy came from the Steelers system. We always say “The City of Indianapolis is Pittsburgh with money”! It is a good image and we give credit where credit is due!

This stuff about releasing med records is simple.

For mccain.. what’s his story? he’s on a multitude of drugs, just to stay alive. he’s had many cancers, including some very bad ones. But he has a who’s who of doctors on speed dial.

For Barbie, i think the only reason she’d not release records, is there’s something in them she doesn’t want anyone to see. Clearly for a young woman, who claims perfect health for her age, there is no logical reason why she’d refuse, except for something she doesn’t want made public.. could she have an incorrect # of children according to what she’s told everyone?

Not even sure why that would matter, except for the lies told over and over. And lies she can’t elude, no matter how fast she spins..

Unofficially, on the first day of Early Voting in Nevada (which was Saturday), Obama is up 3-to-1 over McCain. I was at the polls on Saturday and canvassing Sunday in my Las Vegas neighborhood and it appears to me that a reverse Bradley effect is going on. The Republican centrists are not deciding between McCain and Obama but whether to even go to the polls. That’s right! My guess is that a lot of Republicans are going to stay home on November 4th creating a reverse Bradley effect. While the more daring GOP’ers like Colin Powell are going to give the middle-of-the-road’er Republicans enough of a reason to vote for Obama as they need on the 4th.

Watcha’ landslide. McCain may be lucky to get 200 electorates. 364-174 is probably the way it will go. McCain edged up the polls recently but now that early voting results are leaking out of the battleground states (OH, NC, NV, FL, NM, etc.) I believe you will see Obama’s poll numbers shoot back up. Republicans hate to lose and worse they hate to be associated with LOSERS so watcha’ for the sore losers to stay home Nov 4th and the reverse Bradley effect to take hold esp. now that the mega-rich (like Warren Buffet) and mega-powerful (like Colin Powell) are endorsing the Obama-Biden ticket in droves.

In other news, I wonder how many Gay Republicans are now jumping to the big tent with this lovely headline:

Next she’ll be in favor of taking away a woman’s right to vote….what a moron.

Is is just me or did Sarah Palin look star-struck on SNL? I don’t think she wants to be Vice-President. I think she wants to be the Amy Grant of the airwaves. Scoot over Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter. The Religilous Right is grooming its newest celebrity author and TV/Radio star and her name is SARAH PALIN. the worst is, i don’t think she believe in half of the Religilous Right’s platform. She is a cynic playing to the crowds for her own glorification. She wants to sell books and ad space just like the rest of the Conservative Cynics. For these underbelly of the American fabric, it is not about serviing your country but about exploiting the fears and hatreds of the undereducated Religilous Americans for their own self-gratification and profit. Totally un-American and un-Christian.

The Conspiracy Theorists (CT) with all their “Obama is a terrorist. Obama is a baby-killer. Obama is a traitor. Obama is Arab. Obama was born in Africa. Obama is an Indonesian citizen. Obama is the Black Panther Party. Obama is ACORN.” did get one CT right. Obama believes in Liberation Theology. And, rightfully so. Anybody who believes in a woman’s right to vote, or the education of poor children, health care for the elderly, gay rights, or the fight against racism believes in Liberation Theology! Thank God Obama and Biden believe more in “prophet” than “profit.” They are the true Christians and the true Americans!!!

Pacificnwgal, tried sending you an e-mail at the updated address. I don’t know if it got to you. It would be fun to try to get together. I have a very erratic schedule so it is hard for me to make commitments, but if something gets set up in Seattle or out here on the Olypen I would definitely try to make it.

I am a fairly new American and this is my first federal election. I became an American citizen in December 2006, hoping to be able to vote in the 2006 elections. I missed it by a few weeks and ever since then have been eagerly awaiting my chance to try to change the direction of the country. I can’t beleive that the percentage of voters excercising this priviledge and duty is predicted to be around 65%. And that is considered a high percentage.

For those who don’t live in WA, we vote by mail. My ballot is already filled out. I will be driving my husband’s and my ballots into town to hand deliver it to the County Auditor’s office. I do not want to trust this important vote to the USPS.

I just wanted to share this wih you and see what you think. Yesterday my daughter attended church that my family has attended for years in San Bernardino, California. My husband and I recently moved about 45 minutes away and are looking for a new church home. This said, my daughter called me yesterday horrified. The pastor, who my family have always had much respect for, asked church members to meet him in the church auditorium if they wanted to discuss the coming election and/or get clarification on issuesand policies. My daughter rushed to the auditorium. She said that she looked around and noticed that there were mostly elderly people there and she was the youngest to attend. (She’s thirty something). She said one elderly lady was crying and saying that she had always voted Republican but was seriously thinking about voting for Obama. My daughter said that the pastor and his deacons jumped all over the elderly lady, telling her that they were all Republicans and that God would want her to vote for McCain because the Bible said that same-sex marriage was a sin and that was ahat the Obama campaign was all about. My daughter said they literally lectured these mostly elderly people on continuing to vote Republican without giving them any of the policies the two candidates were offering rhe people. My daughter was appalled that the pastor and the deacons were all Republicans when they do sermons teaching against the sins of lying and deceit. She was horrified that these men of the cloth were choosing to overlook that McCain and Palin were/are outright liars, hatemongers and are playing with fire when they whip their rallies up to hateful frenzies with lies of Obama being a terrorist and a Socialist. The pastor never informed these members that a vote for McCain would be a vote against what would be best for them economically. I am fuming. I told my daughter to find out if they were going to have another meeting so I could attend and voice my opinion. We are no longer members of that church, but I think that these church members should be informed about the issues and the policies so that they can make informed choices that will benefit themselves and America. I truly believe that these members are creatures of habit and will vote as they always have without facts, that the pastor should have given them. I told my daughter that I would consult with the Mudpuppies concerning what to do. Do you think we could flood the church with emails or phone calls? It still will not informed the members of the church about presidential candidates and what they are up against. What do you think?

This is a tough one. I’ll have to think this over and maybe come up with something tomorrow. Bed time now. But I will say that in my opinion it is down right un-Christian to ever bully anyone in any way. And people should be defended from bullying at all times. As a veteran I say that every vote is sacred to a person’s individual conscience and no one has the right to interfere in any way with individual conscience in the United States. Period. This kind of bullying of mostly elderly people makes me down right mad.

calif pat,

First of all, I don’t know your theology, but you might look at a UCC church. Each congregation is autonomous, so if one congregation isn’t a good fit, another might be. My congregation is open and affirming, meaning we welcome and support GLBTQ. In fact, we have several gay families in our congregation. My congregation is also multigenerational, so have a nice mix of infants through very elderly.

As for how to handle your former church, I think you’ve said it quite eloquently yourself: “every vote is sacred to a person’s individual conscience and no one has the right to interfere in any way with individual conscience in the United States. Period. This kind of bullying of mostly elderly people makes me down right mad.” Your pastor and deacons are fallible people just like you and me and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to talk to them just like you would talk to your next door neighbor if they said something over-the-top offensive. Be respectful, but direct and firm.

Good luck and God bless.

Thanks for the honest question! We are glad to answer it on behalf of the City of Pittsburgh. This will explain to you what a Terrible Towel is. Terrible Towels have been carried to the top of Mt. Everest. My brother-in-law and oldest sister have each carried one around in Afghanistan for seven years now for Cosmic protection. They have ridden and flown into battle in tanks, humvees, and carried based fighter jet aircraft. They have been carried by Buddhist monks leaving the City on peace walks. They are for all general good fortune and strength in adversity. And they are used to cheer on the Pittsburgh Steelers in every both home and away game in the NFL. The Terrible Towel is the Flag of the worldwide Steeler Nation which has enabled the Steelers to prevail in Five Super Bowl victories!

califpat,

Wow, that’s a hard one. I would want to certainly do something, but what? Those people, especially the elderly, should be told how wrong the pastor is to bully them.

I am a UCC member and think you might like the atmosphere there. As was posted earlier, each congregation is self determining. And very tolerant. I lived on a barrier island where the church is located until Ivan destroyed all we had and we had to move into Pensacola. It’s too far now for me to go out there for services and I really miss it. It is a wonderful place for all worshipers and with all the tourists and winter residents from various church backgrounds, a lively congregation.

Oh, P.S. on the Terrible Towel. It was invented by the late, great Steeler broadcaster Myron Cope, who wanted the fans to have something to wave during the Steelers’ playoff games during the 1970s. He figured everyone would have a towel to bring.

I don’t know anybody who doesn’t have one.

Big thanks to Hamlet’sMill for arranging our party, which was great fun. What a wonderful bunch of smart, committed people.
