Bedtime in Alaska Open Thread – Brenda Returns!

Brenda the Moose

Brenda the moose paid another visit yesterday.  She didn’t seem interested in the swing set this time, but did have fun with an inflatable buoy.  She didn’t want to look at the camera, so I called out, “Hey Brenda!” and she turned to give me this picture.

Enjoy the Mudflatter Chatter!

dang, that never happens! it’s like winning the lottery. nobody here but me & brenda.

well, as long as i’m here, how about sharing my favourite “careful, don’t spew your drink” news of the day?

those partying AIG guys are at it again, as maureen dowd reports. a charming little partridge hunt in england. pip, pip!

the winning quote:

In an astonishing let-them-eat-cake moment, the A.I.G. big shot Sebastian Preil held court at the bar and told an undercover reporter, “The recession will go on until about 2011, but the shooting was great today and we are relaxing fine.”

E-voting report: Several states still vulnerable

“Several U.S. states still are not doing all they can to ensure the accuracy of votes over electronic voting machines and 10 states received inadequate grades in three of four categories of safeguards, a report from three voting security advocacy groups said.

On Election Day “voting systems will fail somewhere in the United States in one or more jurisdictions in the country,” the report said. “Unfortunately, we don’t know where. For this reason, it is imperative that every state prepare for system failures.”

Move over, angryxer!
Nice link. What total jerks.
I’d love to kick them out of their ill-gotten lives and set them up in a slum with food-stamps.
Can’t they do some “proceeds of crime” type removal of their assets (er, our assets from their homes) in light of what they’ve caused. I see far too many people, myself included, living on the streets (or dang close), and losing everything, NOT through buying more than they can afford, but by entire cities being destroyed because some CFO recommended out-sourcing their jobs.
That article made me see red.

WHEEEEEEE!!! Brenda makes my evening (uh, night. whatever.) Thanks, AKM :o)

No moose here, but I got deer and do the same thing you did – holler at them when taking pictures. Over the last couple years, word must have gotten around that “that hollery one there in the window is a harmless nut”… I holler at the deer and at the birds and the groundhogs and squirrels, even at a skunk one night, and their response is usually the animal version of “huh? yeah, whatever.”

Considering that I do some target shooting in the backyard now and then, I don’t know if it should make me happy that they don’t see me as a threat or if it should offend me that they so blatantly disregard my prowess as a hunter. Humph.

There was a big bachelor herd of elk where I lived in AZ, walking up and down the street morning and evening to get from the watering hole to the hills and back. I miss them a lot… Brian and Brenda remind me of them.

all quiet on the western front. signing off with more uplifting words. these from JFK express ideals that i trust barack obama will restore to the white house. we have gone far too long without fundamental trust & ethics in our highest office.

“The very word “secrecy” is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it is in my control. And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words here tonight as an excuse to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up our mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserve to know.”

I love the look moose and elk give you when you yell at them,..or honk at them when they’re blocking the road. It reminds me of my son when he was a snotty teenager, with a “What do you WANT?” glare, rather than doing “what you asked”.

I’m wondering now if this whole SNL thing wasn’t a set-up so SP could say she was humiliated on national TV, and step down. Then, Romney or ?? can hop in to VP nominee position at the last second and pull back all the repugs they’ve lost over Palin, since they’ve been too blinded by SP’s stupidity to notice McCain’s still an idiot in his own right.
(Wow, sounds like SP wrote that sentence, sorry!)

Speaking of which, it occurred to me that, if WE can’t understand what the heck she’s saying, how in the “H” is any other foreign dignitary with whom she may be required to communicate, going to have a clue what she’s talking about?
I mean, if WE need a translator, what translator will be able to turn her gibberish into a meaningful sentence in another language?

Hehehe… that reminds me of my first close-up elk meeting. I’d gone out in the yard to investigate some doings on the other side of my fence, at night, flashlight in hand. Turned on the flashlight and was face to face with a bull elk, maybe 3 feet apart, almost had a heart attack – I’d had NO idea how huge elk are! The elk just gave me The Look, kinda like an 800-lb cat with really big antlers. I stumbled back into the house and said to then-husband, “D-d-d-did you k-k-know how h-h-huge those things are???” He laughed at me… it took me a LOT longer to laugh at myself.

a surprise out of Dallas …..

McCain remarks on Obama ‘socialism’ viewed as a stretch

CONCORD, N.C. – With John McCain trailing Barack Obama in swing states he needs to win to claim the presidency, his campaign has promoted the idea that his opponent’s tax and health-care policies evoke socialism.

William Wallace, a former vice president and chief operating officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, said the country’s progressive tax code, which Mr. McCain does not propose abolishing, is “socialist in nature.

“It’s a term that gets people’s attention, and therefore I understand why a political candidate might want to use it,” said Dr. Wallace, a professor at the University of North Texas. “But to say we are headed toward socialism is a vast overstatement in my book.”

Congress’ decision this month to allow the federal government to invest directly in failing banks was the most significant government intervention in financial markets in decades – and Mr. McCain voted for it along with Mr. Obama.

If Spalin ever makes it that far, she’ll simply decree that the world speak English, dontcha know. Those who refuse to speak English, believe in her brand of Jesus, or otherwise insist on being different won’t count in her picture of the world and communicating with them will therefore be a non-issue.

I once thought I wanted an elk farm, and I thought I was going to turn them into a new/old mode of transportation. When they run, their backs don’t bounce (like when you ride a horse, you have to ‘post’ to counteract the bounce).
Anyway, my friend told me he tried that but the elks are so laden with ticks that you don’t really want to be hanging out/onto them that much.
(Maybe he was lying and just didn’t want to get an elk farm)
Anyway, after that I applied to manage the Musk-Ox farm in Palmer. Didn’t get that job, either,..and I would have loved that. Those are some gorgeous animals!

Sorry Ira, that was a dumb answer, I must be tired,.
I used to love sitting in the snow watching the elk run like crazy,..and for no reason, I guess they just like doing that. Moose are pretty clumsy runners. But, you’re right, caribou run the same way.

I ate a lot of musk-ox before anyone told me what it was.
I really don’t think I could have raised them for slaughter. Like you said, the wool is beautiful and silky, and they’re such huge (and appear to be fairly docile) beasts. ( Another place where I used to sit at the fence and watch the animals.)

Hey, I’m reading the German morning news… Spiegel Magazine has a perfectly delicious article on Spalin and SNL. I wish I could translate it in all its snarky beauty! Man, they’re ripping her every which way!
It ends with the remark that her next stop (afternoon today) is Roswell, NM, of alleged 1947 UFO crash fame, and that – paraphrased – this reality beats anything a comedy writer could think up.

You think that some aliens could beam her back home to Planet Palin? It’d be SO nice…

JR50:
Thanks. I will be sending that out to as many of the indian reserves that I have friends/relatives on, and hope that it goes viral. Most of them have given up voting, because they feel so left out of the loop.
If they knew how dangerous, and how racist the McPalin platform truly is, they might change their minds and vote.
The one Obama daughter looks exactly like my granddaughter. I’d like a better world for her, instead of the racist world I grew up in.

Another reason I’d like to kick SP in the shins. This June, I walked from here, (Michigan) to Washington, joining with a slew of natives, some of whom had walked from San Francisco, some from Alaska, to talk about the environment, and to try to make lawmakers understand that, we must do these things, to fix the environment, starting NOW. I picked up hundreds of bags of garbage on the way. I went through 3 pairs of moccassins. My friend got Lyme disease from the ticks in the Greenbelt Park. We got lost in D.C. and ended up in the worst part of town, and somebody was shot dead, right in front of me.
Palin has no idea about these things. She has lived on her island of Alaska, and never stuck her head out since college to see what the people of this country are going through. She sees what she wants to see, and believes only what is convenient for her. She can’t even see what the natives of her own state are up against. Or, like the genocide of the past, she is hoping to eradicate them through starvation and neglect.
I want Obama to go to the reserves and see what is happening, because I know he would change things. I want Obama to go to Alaska, and “shake things up”, so that no one, of any color, is left out in the cold.
And I know he would, if requested. It’s all over his face, especially when he talks to children and old people. He has NO HATE. He dislikes NO ONE. He only has love for all these people. He is concerned. He cares. And he understands what they mean when they say they are hungry, or tired, or fed-up.
McCain and Palin have no concern or love or care to give to the people. They don’t show it, and they don’t say it.
Simple difference here: Obama shows love. They show the opposite.

Tens of thousands of voters could be affected [by purging] in Wisconsin. Officials there admit that their database is wrong one out of five times when it flags voters, sometimes for data discrepancies as small as a middle initial or a typo in a birth date. When the six members of the state elections board — all retired judges — ran their registrations through the system, four were incorrectly rejected because of mismatches.

Sounds like this election has done nothing to dampen Palin’s ambition.

http://www.weeklystandard.com/
“PALIN AND STAFF WOULD DO ROLLOUT DIFFERENTLY”
FRONTIER WOMAN on Weekly Standard cover.
“Republicans, even some McCain advisers, have yet to realize the enormous asset they have in Palin: She’s the party’s most crowd-pleasing and exciting figure since Ronald Reagan . . . In the weeks after the convention, she was limited to two major TV interviews. When she did poorly in one. . . There was little contrary evidence in the press by which to judge her or defend her. I asked Palin whether she’d do things differently . . . She answered by silently mouthing ‘yes.’ When two aides–we were on a McCain-Palin bus with staff and security–said ‘yes’ aloud, she chimed in, ‘Yes — yes, yes, yes.’ The alternative would have been what she’s doing now: three or four talk radio shows a day, plus interviews on local TV and cable news, appearances on some national shows such as ‘Saturday Night Live,’ and chats with local print reporters and a few national political writers. It should have been obvious she could handle the media…. She has young children, no team of political strategists to advise her, and is from a state even more remote than Arkansas. Whether they know it or not, Republicans have a huge stake in Palin. If, after the election, they let her slip into political obscurity, they’ll be making a tragic mistake.”

More and more it looks like Obama will will. That creates a huge problem for Alaska. Sarah Palin will return in triumph after her defeat to huge crowds in Alaska. (News Flash: Alaska State Police refuse to control crowds. There are reports that police confiscated guns are being issued to the crowd.) I didn’t realize that Troopergate II was in the works but in light of the Governor’s past actions the report can be expected to be juicy. Then what? Recall, impeachment, criminal indictments? Is there an investigation into housegate? I suspect that this is the one that could send Sarah and Todd to jail. I put forth my thoughts about the house in a previous post. This one would be fairly easy to solve with supeana powers. I would also investigate the pipeline deal. Some things about that just don’t seem right. The way I understand it Alaska gave 500 million in seed money to start the process. I though that the oil and gas companies are flush with cash. Was it one of those, “Governor, if you don’t give us tons of money we’re going to go out of business!” Maybe Joe The Plumber could move to Alaska and Sarah would advance him the money to start up his business. All in all, it looks like Alaska is going to be in the news for quite a while.

Powell explains his vote by saying (random notes here🙂 )

Obama has intellectual vigor, crosses ethnic and racial lines, is inclusive (as opposed to the republican party that’s becoming more narrow). Obama has both style and substance.

Powell said he was rtroubled by McCain’s lurching around re: the economy and his lack of judgment in choosing SP. (He thinks SP is not ready to be president and takes the party further right.) He also said nice things about McCain, but he spoke about his dismay with the direction of the repub party. He’s troubled by the focus on things not central to the country, such as the Bill Ayers attacks and robo-calls. He’s troubled by the prospect of two repub appointments to the supreme court.

Bottom line (paraphrasing here): Obama has the potential to be a transformational figure that will reach out to the entire country.

Powell specifically spoke about his dismay at the innuendos that Obama was a Muslim. He’d quite unhappy that “senior republican” leaders are allowing that rumor to stand, but more importantly, if someone asked if BO was a Muslim, the correct answer, in America, is “so what?” Then he spoke about a Muslim American soldier who gave his life for his country in Iraq.

I think he touched all the bases – very strong and comprehensive critique of both candidates abilities and qualifications.

Ahhh…breathing a great sigh of relief here. Powell is a huge endorsement here, I think. He has managed to maintain a centrist position that may well play a very large part in the undecided swing vote. Being someone who finds myself at odds with both parties on certain issues, Powell is someone I have always respected for his judgement and non-partisan nature, even when I’ve disagreed with his conclusions. Really glad to see this, and the reasons he gave as to why. Sleep calls – wishing all those in Mudflats land well, and many thanks for the info.

David Brooks on MTP: Powell was not attacking McCain, but was attacking the orthodoxy of a party that is “narrowing.” Joe Scarborough – endorsements will have an impact esp. w/ retired military in Florida. Jon Meacham – talking about Powell doctrine and the importance of getting the Powell seal of improvement. Andrea Mitchell – talking about SP and how Powell saw this as a negative.

Joe Scarborough spewing $%#@*^$ about being a 51/49 country. Yeah, and that’s the problem Joe – we need to be bigger than that.

She said it was nothing that Powell endorsed Obama, it was nothing that HER newspaper, the Chicago Trib, which has NEVER in it’s history endorsed a Dem, it’s nothing that the number of newspapers endorsing Obama is 60-18..

She is convinced if there’s a war, mccain will push the button. That is perhaps the scariest of views. it also explains the mentality (or lack thereof) of the blind following that mccain supporters have. Jonestown… Branch Davidians, it’s all the same.. cult mentality and die following.

My thoughts about Sarah Palin:

1. She professes to be a devote Christian and holds Christian values dear to her heart. She remodeled her office for $50,000 without authorization and when called on the carpet by the city council she told them that as Mayor she would do what she wants. In the eyes of most religions wouldn’t this be theft and wouldn’t she be honor bound to make amends?

2. Sarah Palin interfered in the marriage of her sister and wound up abusing her power as Governor. Again, this would seem to violate Christian teachings. More importantly, interference in someone’s marriage is rarely appreciated and can cause family strife. This gives an indication of her true character. Should she become President (shudder, shudder) can we expect that purges, vindictiveness and retaliation will be the hallmarks of her administration?

3. I understand that Palin resisted efforts to initiate construction inspections in Wasilla. As I understand, it this area is in an earthquake zone (do a Wikipedia search on Alaska earthquakes) and all construction should be strictly regulated and inspected to ensure that an earthquake will not cause a huge loss of life. Construction earthquake building codes have been proven to save lives. Life is what Christians hold sacred. If Palin becomes President are we to assume that sensible government regulations will be abandoned?

4. I have read reports that Plain loaded up her administration with friends and supporters and got rid of long time, experienced people. Are we to assume that the same would happen in her Presidential administration? I shudder to think of Todd Palin as Secretary of State.

5. Although thinly veiled, Palin’s public statements seem to show that she feels that the Caucasian race is favored by God and all others are lesser humans. Should we assume that she would pass laws favoring “God’s chosen race?” What about the Supreme Court’s ruling saying that this would be illegal. Would she abolish the Supreme Court?

6. Todd Pail’s membership in and Sarah Palin’s support of the Alaska Independence Party disturbs me. Should we assume that a Palin Administration would support the secession and the creation of the Country of Alaska? What about her oath of office?

7. Sarah Plain’s lack of knowledge of scientific facts, world event and world politics call attention to her lack of qualifications for the high office she seeks. I feel that the average high school student has a greater understanding of the above than Sarah Palin. That being said, I feel that her advisers in her administration would have powers not given to them by the Constitution and the potential for abuse would be great.

8. Sarah Palin statements seem to show that she has little respect for other people and cultures. This could cause sever problems in a Palin administration.

And add one more newspaper to that growing list that is endorsing Obama – my area paper, the Buffalo (NY) News:

——————————————

The only thing we have to fear, a great president once said, is fear itself.

Barack Obama is not afraid.

Concerned. Alert. Maybe even a little alarmed. But the Democratic candidate for president of the United States is not afraid and, of perhaps even more importance, he does not seek to be elected by making us afraid.

If Americans want a future where our leaders respond to challenges with judgment and principle, rather than panic and rashness, they will elect Barack Obama president. We recommend they do so.

As a Republican and a Christian, Colin Powell expressed, very eloquently, my concern about the extreme right wing direction the Republican party has veered off to. It is no longer an Inclusive party of all Americans and for me personally that is not acceptable.

McCain and Palin have been creating further divisions in our country not only amongst race and cultures but within Christians of both parties as well.

I’m glad that Colin Powell had the courage to address many of the negative and nonsensical McCain/Palin tactics that have been disturbing. McCain and Palin have a “Win at all costs” mentally that is very dangerous to the fabric of our civilized nation.

Ok…I lurked a bit over at Hannity forum today to see what some were saying over the Powell endorsement.

Of course, the general feeling is that the only reason Powell endorsed Obama was race. After all, why else would he?? (Sheesh)

The really bizarre thing, they seriously think you are unchristian if you vote Obama. These people are dead serious. One person wrote that his/her black minister was voting Obama, and the poster said it was obvious race trumped salvation.

These people REALLY think people are going to hell if one votes Obama.

Just watched Powell on MTP. Very nicely said.

I just used the posted link to the video (thanks mudpuppies for posting links!) to reply to a raving “Obama-is-a-scary-Ayers-dveotee” poster on a thread from our local paper, and just basically said “If Obama is what you say he is, why would Powell endorse him?”. I said Powell was a great American. I don’t see how people can still say stuff like the Ayers association actually means anything without now also calling Colin Powell at best ignorant of “the truth” or at worst, a terrorist sympathizer himself. How dare they insult a man who’s served his country as well and for as long as Powell has. But, no doubt people will try. Despicable.

My mom a few months ago got forwarded from one of her cousins one of the “Obama is a Muslim” e-mails and then began to express doubts about him (she’s Republican, but not crazy about McCain), and I asked her who she would like to see running for Prez and VP, what would her dream ticket be?

She said Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice.

Good Morning, Glad to hear about General Powell. We don’t get the show for another 30 minutes.

Was it on the Daily Show where they talked about the very strange guy from Ohio, that said Obama was going to become a dictator because he’s had his own flag made with a large “O” on it? Turns out the flags (of which some were American flags, fifty stars) Obama was standing in front of were the state flag of Ohio. The right wing conservative commentator didn’t even recognize his own flag.

Hi Brenda! A while back we met a relative of hers here in Western MA. She ran in front of the car. We stopped to look when she turned around and looked at us as if to charge. This morning had 11 squirrels at the squirrel feeder. Yes, I do feed and welcome the squirrels. It’s amazing that I can see that each squirrel has his/her own personality. Our deer are getting to be a problem here. In our Lock Raven watershed there are 80 deer per acre and the state wildlife experts say that they are eating all of the vegetation and and causing silting problems. They say that 10 deer per acre is ideal and 15 deer per acre is maximum. I envy Alaska with its teeming wildlife population and guess that makes life in Alaska very interesting.

I think I see the error in my posting…I was referring to the readers on the website for the Newark Advocate thinking the women who placed the ad are haters (which I hardly see as hating – they just aspire for something better in the leadership for this country.)

Often I check out what the other side says and writes trying to figure out how they tick. Then I get disgusted and jump back over to the places where I know there are warm fuzzies.

The ad is quite a terrific idea…ways to band locally and make the voice bigger:)

It seems to be conventional wisdom that the polls tighten closer to the election. Maybe it’s the undecideds – they can’t all break one way? At least from what I’ve been hearing and reading, it doesn’t seem unusual, so I’m trying not to worry🙂

CP was so eloquent this morning. He addressed so many issues – civility and inclusiveness in politics, the need to bring the nation together, the need for a thoughtful and dynamic president to lead our country – hopefully, this will make people think hard about the choice they need to make and if there has been erosion in the polls it will stop.

Off to do non-blogging things. Have a great day mudpuppies. Let’s stay positive and spread the word!

1) On McCain, NY TImes article is good, with many good links, including especially: McCain’s Lobbyists.

2) Excerpt of Powell interview is good, but it’s certainly worth watching the whole interview.

3) For people who still are negative on Powell for his actions regarding the war:

a) The various intelligence agencies in the world (correctly) thought Saddam had the intent to have and use WMD, and many (incorrectly) thought he had the capability as well. As it turned out, Saddam’s game-playing with the inspection teams was aimed to hide his weakness (from Iran & others), not strength, and that fooled a lot of people.

b) A good Commander-in-Chief shouldn’t impose their view, but demand good intelligence and allocate funds to go get it, even though ti would take a year or two. That’s something the President can order, not a Secretary of State.

c) Whether in government or a company, a senior executive who disagrees with a strategy (in a complex circumstance with partial information) ends up with a choice:

– threaten to resign, and mean it. In practice, you can really only do this once, not as a regular tactic, and if your resignation is accepted, you leave, and somebody replaces you.

– go along with it, even with concerns, in the hope that one can continue to contribute, and that one would do better than a replacement over the long term.

To John Mashey on Powell:
John seems to suggest Powell’s best option on Iraq was

– go along with it, even with concerns, in the hope that one can continue to contribute, and that one would do better than a replacement over the long term.

Now we know that Powell back then thought the evidence was shaky. We find out that it all came from one or two paid informants and torture victims. If he’d resigned and said what he thought didn’t he have the possibility of influencing Congress and the media in their support of invasion? That would have been putting “country first.”

I think there is an important connection between a post on the previous thread and one here.

@ intelligentbydesign (19:55:19) :

“Basically, over 2 decades of study on 80,000 questions, he found that experience had no relation to correctly predicting future foreign events and how foreign policy would help to shape them. No one did any better than a coin toss. The only way that odds were improved was when a group of foreign policy experts was assembled, and had to debate the issue, and come up with a solution that was agreed upon by all parties. Interesting article. Can be found at
http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2008/10/05/a_talk_with_philip_tetlock/?page=full

Take that together with:
@ Aeroentropy (03:50:56) :

Talking of this blog: ” Where else can I find a mix of moose and politics (like-minded, at that), without the whack-o stuff that always seems to get started elsewhere. If it’s a matter of close editing, my hat’s off to you! If it’s substantially self-edited — well, hats off to all of us. Thank you, mud-puppies everywhere!”
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Both posts are, at heart, talking about self-organizing dynamical systems, in which behavior/actions/ are emergent from the nonlinear interactions of the components of the system, without any central control.

In other words, there is no hierarchy: whether we are talking about foreign leaders or mudpuppies, they and we are components of a larger interactive system with no one leader or mudpuppy in charge.

This blog is a prime example of self-organization, self-editing and self-policing (don’t feed the trolls.)

We know emergent behavior cannot be predicted but what can be predicted is that expecting a certain result from imposing action from the top will not work; as in get rid of Sadaam and everything will be wonderful.

Sorry this is so long, but I believe the way Mudflats “works” is the way the US must work under President Obama if we have any hope of regaining America’s promise. We’ve got to keep this up after the election.

The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations by Ori Brafman and Rod A. Beckstrom explains better what I’m after here. It’s a fast, fun, and very important read.

Thank you for indulging my long-windedness.

I’ve noticed the polls tightening too, and am also upset about it. HOWEVER on 538 and Princeton Electoral, the EV has not changed much if at all.

It COULD at least partially be voters in already “red” states now stating a preference in national polls, where previously they had been undecided, or claimed to be. JSM winning Kansas by four percent or ten percent (for example) doesn’t matter a hill of beans.

One of the pundits today (I think it was Chuck Todd, but I’m not 100% on that, I watch too many political shows on Sunday!) said that it appears McCain is doing what he can to try to take the EV–ie, defending every “BUSH” state–because they know they no longer have a hope of winning the popular vote.

Look at where all the action has been in the last couple of weeks–states that went red in the last few elections. Barry is coming to FL with Hillz on Monday and Michelle on Tuesday, both times in HUGE population areas. He’s got to carry Dade, Broward and the I-4 corridor to make up for the redder than red areas in other parts of the state.

Face it, if Barry and Joe get FL, OH, or VA, they don’t NEED anything else. The R’s know that.

No one else I’ve heard speak from Alaska sounds like that. That’s okay, Scotsgirl. For all anyone knows in this country, most people probably would think it was referring to Groucho Marx. I bet most people have no idea who Karl Marx was or anything about his philosophies.

About SNL. I think they could have done better. They held back unfortunately. The only one who was funny was Tiny Fey. Sarah was true to form, and I don’t find anything about her funny or humorous. Although viewership was up, it wasn’t the best show if that was an example of how they portrayed Sarah. But, then Sarah is a big disappointment too, so nothing new there. POW POW… POWELL!

as you’ve all heard Colin Powell has come out for BHO. DO listen to his reasoning on CNN snip at:

http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/10/19/sots.powell.obama.cnn

SO interesting also is so interesting as to me it shows EXACTLY what I saw here in Berlin and have had trouble describing:

http://edition.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/10/19/sots.powell.obama.cnn

This video shows at minute 5:50++

As they come out of the ‘holding tent’ in St. Louis, and pass David Axelrod, cool and seemingly a bystander [in Berlin for 1/2 hour outside ourside the ADLON HOTEL rear entrance in the sun, leaning totally relaxed against the wall, one hind foot up and constantly talking on his blackberry], but in reallity THE guy who has made the campaign tick so smoothly and successfully, standing nonchalantly in his old levis with his cell [as usual outside of the chattering group of VIP VIP’s inside], EVER doing the business that has made this machine run so smoothly, and David Plouff whose organization raised 150 million last month, in the yellow jacket, they are an amazing team of people. Not a ‘self-important’ bone in any of their bodies!

Obama’s friend/factotum/body-man, the tall bald black carrying Obama’s camera for him; just as we saw them close up behind the ADLON in Berlin before his great speech here.

Note the one huge bald black SS man on the right behind him again as in Berlin. His close SS team seems to be always more or less the same. I’m fascinated to watch them move with him as a more-or-less flowing well-integrated basketball team down the court… wow…. nice metaphor, what?

How can anyone watch this team Obama has pulled together over two-three years of planning and still question the man’s wisdom and skills at leading and organizing?

Especially as one watches the stummbling, bumbling, death’s head shit-eating grin of McOld.

And, heaven help us that air-headed feather-duster liar from Alaska who’d be one cancerous heartbeat away from leading the US over the edge of the cliff and into the Apocalypse and the ‘Arms of the Lord’

Obama has Albright and Powell in the Secretary of State column. Besides Powell’s error with Iraq, he’s an impressive guy. Think it can only help. He made an impressive arguement on MTP.

Which 5 does that leave McCain with? Rice, Kissinger, Schultz, Baker, Alexander [I’m in charge now] Haig? Except for Rice [who is really associated with Iraq in so many minds] these guys are more ancient than McCain.

Here in Berlin, where they have a much larger presence, they threaten with violence art galleries and even the National Opera if anything offends them. Wallace/McCain interview:
MCCAIN: As a cold political calculation, I could not be more pleased. She (Palin) has excited and energized our base. She is a direct counterpoint to the liberal feminist agenda for America.”

This took me right back to teaching Women’s Studies in a university somewhere in the South. When I asked if there were any feminists in the class, 2 out of 56 raised their hands. Some said it depended on what I meant by feminism.

Making the definition as broad as I could, I replied: I believe a feminist is someone who thinks women are human beings, therefore equal under the law.

Did that get them all on board? Not at all. In fact, one student assessment at the end of the course read: Nothing you have said in this class has changed my mind about anything. I still don’t believe women are human beings.

But my all time favorite was: As far as I’m concerned Professor —– and gays and lesbians are lowering the morals of this country.

As a relatively boring person, I am really tickled to think I have that much power!

Kudos to CP for stating in no uncertain terms that it is not a “crime” to be a Muslim in this country. This cavalier acceptance of religious discrimination against Muslims will one day be seen for the shameful episode in our history that it is, but it will take people of substance and courage to stand up to it now for that to happen. The truly shameful conduct of religion in this day and age belongs to the bigots on the Christianist far right.

Carol, one the one hand you could say it’s like the business news is negative, because it’s truthful. But unfortunately they mean snarky and nasty. The idea that the truth can be negative seems to be beyond these commentators comprehension. They seem to think that balance means running a fluff piece to counter every real disaster, because entertainment and ratings require it. Never say anything bad about the customer etc., etc. It’s been that way ever since news became a profit center rather than public service. Maybe there will be enough public backlash to change that

I’m pretty sure those were the same stated goals of Christianity back in the days of the Crusades. We accept that Christianity has evolved past these goals (except, apparently, on the far right), so why is it assumed that all Muslim’s still adhere to this dogma? I work with a geneticist who is 1.) brilliant, 2.) dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with genetic disorders and 3.) Muslim. She has never, in our many years of acquanitanceship, attempted to either convert or kill me. I think religious extremism, regardless of the brand, is destructive and Islamic extremism is particularly topical today, but the way to fight it is not to find ways that we are different, but to try to unify the moderates of all faiths into a cohesive body that rejects extremist nonsense.

Europe is different. I’m not disputing at all what’s going on in Germany, it’s clearly enough depicted in the news, but you just can’t compare it to how things are done and dealt with here in the US. Your post reminds me of my aunt coming to visit in AZ years ago and chastising me for having a big dog while being poor. She said, “In Germany, big dogs are a luxury.” I thought, yeah, so what does that have to do with me? In Germany, people don’t have a house on an acre of ground and a horse and a pickup truck. In what particular way does that have any relation to people in America having a house on an acre of ground and a horse and a pickup truck?

So, how “other-faith” problems rise and are dealt with in Germany has very little to do with what’s going on in the US. It’s a different environment here, yanno?

Not only do I think it’s weird, I find it quite presumptive. In the case of those wives whose husbands are running for President, that is fine (in this case Cindy and Michelle) because their husbands were ELECTED to run. In the case of the spouses of the VP nominees, the spouses should not be in the picture AT ALL as their spouses were APPOINTED by the Presidential nominee. The Palins continue to show their ignorance, bad taste, tacky ambition, and (I hate to say this, but I will) low class. They are becoming more of an embarassment every day and are not doing either the Republican party or the country as a whole any favors – they are just not “cut from a very fine cloth” as my grandmother would say.

Shikago I feel your distress – Chores or Mudflats?

I can do laundry and Mudflats almost simultaneously! I fold & fluff when I refresh.

MSNBC just had a little mini report re: who would have thought North Carolina would be up for grabs five weeks ago? I continue to be in awe of the Obama Campaign’s incredible strategy. It is working.

I stopped in at a “coffee” at a local supermarket hosted by a Dem candidate for the Alaska Legislator, Val Buffone. We know some of the same people as Anchorage is really a small town even tho there are 250K+ people here.

So, I went to the coffee to tell Val that I was voting for her and sign up for a yard sign. I asked her what would happen when McCain lost and Sarah came back. Given all of the bipartisan bridges that Sarah has burned, e.g., Ed O’Callahan and Meghan Stapleton, all the Troopergate stuff, the lies that started at the Repug Convention, etc….how would anything get done in the State House?

Val said it was going to be a huge challenge, but not insurmountable. The Legislature will have to find a way to work with her to move forward with the business of the state. Val said she will do what it takes to represent the district and will work in a bipartisan fashion to get some sort of synergy working in the State House.

Interesting times ahead…

Thanks! Seems to me that abuse of power is quite serious, especially for the Gov. of a State..

McCain v. Obama

The world according to McCain is very different than the view of Obama.

McCain, from the first day after securing the GOP nomination presented his presidential quest in negativity. In my memory, his earliest commercials on TV were Obama negative missives. He rarely had positive things to say, and instead only talked about Obamas negatives. And in my view, most of those comments were simply made up, distorted, or re-created, re-hashed statements of limited accuracy.

McCain, from the beginning questioned Obama’s presidential qualifications. He discussed with ever increasing vigor how BAD Obama would be. He discussed his inexperience, his unlikely ability to fight a war, or fix the economy. McCain didn’t find his voice when it came to discussing HIS policy plans or how he’d actually do anything, on virtually all issues facing this country.

War seemed to be his niche. Fight the ones we have, start a few new ones, make up more strife as a good way to forget the imploding economy. Distract Americans from what is important. A nuke here or there would be a good thing in a McCain administration. Maybe drop one on Iran or N. Korea and in one mushroom cloud, we’d find the world is a different place and one John McCain would relish. Vanquish his demons as a failure in the Navy. And he was a failure being fifth from the bottom at the Naval Academy. That’s par with being a low 1.9 GPA barely passing student. Both Daddy and Granddady McCains were Admirals. How humiliating to be a naval failure.

McCain has no clue how to fix the economy. He changes his mind daily, yet, in his world, the economy is irrelevant. My ex-wife sums it up, when she exclaims the only thing that matters is that in the wars to come, McCain is the only one strong enough to fight them. It doesn’t matter to her about ANYTHING ELSE. When I said the Chicago Tribune, a lifetime GOP newspaper, and her newspaper as she grew up, endorsed Obama, she didn’t care. When I said her own democrat daughter dispises her unwillingness to listen, she hung up on me. Unwillingness to listen, or admit change is needed is a trait of most GOP people.

McCain’s flailing campaign decided there was no topic they can win with, and they must discredit Obama to have any inkling of a chance to win. This leads things down the road of pure evil that even makes Satan blush.

McCain starts with one evilness after another. The favorite lie, clearly Bill Ayers plays well to the lemming community who’ll believe anything emitting from his jowled face. Scream from the rooftops, Obama pals around with terrorists. Yet, there’s not one shred of evidence he ever did that. In the real world, he’d be sued for SLANDER, but it seems in the world of politics, no lie is ever punished. All’s fair in the land of Lie.

Yes, McCain says proudly, Barack Obama palled around with terrorists, although he never mentioned any name beyond Ayers, so where are the others? And while he exclaimed this over and over, he never disclosed them. Obama started his campaign in Ayers living room. Yet, no proof was ever shown to back up this claim. McCain flailed at his Quixotic terror windmill as often as possible. Firing up the GOP base, making this election about hatred was the focus. Issues be damned, they plotted a course of avoidance of where McCain would go as president and simply chose to make Obama a candidate of hate.

McCain wasn’t done with Ayers. The next piece to his hate filled jigsaw puzzle was to start addressing Obama by his full name, Barack Hussein Obama. This incredibly thinly veiled attack on his heritage and race. Why McCain simply didn’t call him a Muslim, like being one is a satanic icon, or simply draw comparisions to his race, or even more gutteral, simply making the connection to the color of his skin. Making hate the star of a campaign doesn’t address the true color of a campaign. Mccain has, from day one, not had a plan, except to make Obama a black terrorist, ready to destroy America. This has been his entire doctrine.

What kind of America would he create in office? A white world? One that sees all “non-white” people as somehow less American? Seeing Democrats as liberal idealists who will sink America even to lower depths than we’re sitting at now?

McCain wasn’t done. He decided to reach into the bottom of the sludge filled barrel and came out, with his hand around the neck of Sarah Palin. She became the anti-Christ, the complimentary evil sidekick to the Satanic McCain. She burst out of obscurity, with the velocity of a circus act on speed. Being introduced to America by giving a well-recieved speech at the GOP convention, she proved to be an adept speaker, but like a small town newsreader, showed a complete and utter distain for anything not Alaska. Every speech, every comment was painted Alaskan. Every comment was either off topic, ignoring the question, or showing a complete and total lack of the slightest clue what the actual answer should be. As simple as it should have been to tell Katie Couric what newspapers she READS lends credibility to her lack of the slightest shred of intellect. Obscuring answers with mindless strings of words at her debate with Joe Biden showed she was nothing more than fluff, and in ways so totally terrifying was basically just a beauty pageant contestant one heartbeat away from the most powerful office in the world.

Sarah Palin became the cause-celeb for McCain. She was ‘every mom’ to the people unable to have their own opinions and showed a willingness to accept someone elses view. Even when Palin was labled an ‘abuser of power’, in her world, she was completely vindicated and the people who cherish her holiness accepted her answer of ‘I’m innocent of all charges, just like the report says’. It was irrelevant to her that she wasn’t innocent, but that was just not important enough to mention.

McCain wasn’t done. He had lots more tricks up his sleeve, and in the slime he lived in, it was just a matter of which one to go with.

Welcome, Joe The Plumber. The newest icon of the McCain bag of tricks. Yet, Joe was neither a plumber or even a man concerned about his future. He lied to Obama, made himself a national figure, then whined like a baby when the world saw thru his scam. McCain rushed to defend him, making it suddenly an Obama problem, even though it was McCain who made him a reviled celeb. Why concern yourself with details over who did what, when it’s easier to simply blame someone else?

McCain wasn’t done. The magic bag of tricks seems never to empty.

Acorn, voter fraud, bad voter registrations, voter lawsuits, armed militia at polling places and terror-filled phone calls. Ballots that were GOP printed that lacked required check marks had McCain operatives demanding they be counted, yet the world sees thru the mud and fully realizes if the reverse was true, and they were Dem ballots, they’d be screaming bloody murder if those DEFECTIVE ballots were counted. There is only one GOP view. It’s good if it’s GOP, it’s BAD if it’s not.

By now, you’d think it’s got to be over, and there can’t possibly be more, yet you’d be wrong. Huh? How can there be more? Say it ain’t so, Joe.

Michele Bachmann appeared, in one 15 minute interview on one cable news network, she instantly polarized the campaigns to even depths that Satan would not tread. Nothing was off-limits. Wright, Americanism, and our way of life would end with Obama as president. Hate filled words emitted from her vile mouth, and the world noticed. In a mere 24 hours, her Dem opponent for Congress raised over $100,000, thats now over $250,000, a monsterous total in a small state election. It would be money that John McCain would have drooled over. The world noticed, her hate was translated into revulsion and the GOP took another punch to the gut.

Nancy Pfotenhauer declared Northern Virginia (where i’ve lived for over 25 years) as something not American. The ‘real Virginia’ is the south. What she meant was the GOP Virginia is the south, where the civil war has never ended, and they’re damn proud of the fight. In the most rural and poorest parts of Virginia, a black man could still be strung up from a tree and murdered as the white clad monsters applaud. Pfotenhauer loves her REAL Virginia, it’s just sad it’s not ALL of Virginia. She claimed that ‘liberal Washington DC’ residents all moved to Northern Virginia. Oddly, Washington DC is predominantly black, yet NOVA is predominantly white, so exactly where did these DC transplants come from? Pfotenhauer herself lives in this area, and she knows she’s lying, but it’s ok, because as a Republican, she’s allowed by gospel to lie.

Gosh, so what else? We have GOT to be done by now? Right? Wrong.

Today, Oct 19, may have spelled the end of John McCain. Republican Secretary of State Colin Powell decided to endorse Barack Obama. The GOP spinmasters were belittling his decision within minutes of it being announced, yet they know it’s perhaps the last fatal blow to their chest of lies. They can spin til the cows come home, but the fact is sitting there, in black and white.

Another eloquent, intelligent, intensely popular black man selects Obama, for his leadership skills and intellect. He found distain over how McCain tried painting Obama as a Muslim, and how the lies the GOP tried to discredit Obama on any and all fronts, with little regard for any truth.

Colin Powell may have turned the tide. It can’t help McCain, it can only hurt. There aren’t many more popular people in this country, who is seen as univerally well liked by, gee, well, everyone. Find a bad word about Powell anywhere. It won’t be easy.

There is hope, a chance at having America become the proud face of the free world again. George W. Bush dessimated our country. Eight years of misery and embarassment as a country may finally be coming to an end.

A war most of the world saw as illegal and unjust and simply a personal demon of Bush to avenge the attempted assassination of Daddy Bush by Saddam Hussein. There were legions of Bush people, including John McCain of course, pounding the ‘Lets go to War’ mantra. That war ended almost 2000 days and countless deaths ago, announced by George Bush in his flight suit, but he was wrong and it continues to this day. And of course, John McCain wants to keep fighting, for eternity if he must, to fulfill his own failed military career. He’s channelling Iraq to vanquish his Vietman demons. It won’t work, and we’re tired of our American children dying in a country not one of us gives a hoot about. Oil is king and that’s what it’s about, yet the Iraqi’s aren’t interested in sharing. We’ve gotten not one drop of their billions of barrels of oil. How ironic we disposed of an evil dictator and their thanks came in such a generous way. By giving us nothing. And now they want us to leave.

The world has changed today. It’s a good time to be American and there is hope for our future.

We’re at the crossroads of the future of America. It’s not over until we vote. But perhaps today we can whisper it. The die is cast and it looks like our next president will be Barack Hussein Obama.

For those who are worrying about national polls, they mean very, very little. If we learned anything from 2000, its all about the electoral college. The best chance of McCain/Palin eking a victory is the following:
1.) They must win 2 of the following 3 states
West Virginia +2.4 M
North Dakota +4.0 M
Nevada +4.2 O
2.)They need to win all of the follwing tossups
North Carolina +1.3 O
Missouri +2.5 O
Ohio +2.8 O
Florida +3.2 O
3.) They must also win the following both leaning Obama
Colorado +5.8 O
Virginia + 8.1 O

With that being said, what are their internal polls telling them that they have decided to spend a huge chunk of their time and resources here in PA. Thet are planning 1/2 mil spending in Philadelphia alone. Each of the last 6 polls done in PA have shown a minimum of +12 Obama here and PA has typically been a blue state.

I’ve been thinking.

Here is a scenario. A white sales person is about to get fired, if they don’t hit their numbers for the company they work for.

The white business owner has turned him/her down to make their numbers to keep their job. They go to the next business owner, and that business owner is african american. This business owner is interested in their product/service.

Time is running out, and the african american business owner is the last chance they have before it is time to turn in the sales for the month.

Do the sales rep:

A. Give their presentation to the business owner, and the business owner signs the agreement.

B. Tell the business owner they won’t sell their product/services to them because they are african american.

Which one would they choose?

Regarding Muslims –

In my experience, the ethos of Muslims runs about the same gamut as it does for Christians. I say that having lived for several years in two countries where people were predominately Muslim. In one case, I was a Peace Corps volunteer living in a very rural and poor area. In the other, 20 years later, I was an American diplomat hobnobbing with the elite.

I also have traveled extensively in many countries that were largely Muslim, and others that were almost exclusively Muslim.

There are good Muslims, bad Muslims, and fanatical Muslims. From what I’ve seen, the “average” Muslim is really not all that different than the average Christian. The suicide bombers, “infidel” haters, and the ignorant and poor masses in many parts of the Middle East, are no more representative of Muslims than the abortion-clinic bombers, Oklahoma City Federal Building bombers, and KKK-type racists are representative of most Americans.

TWO: KUDOS to Colin Powell, for timing and content, I salute you, sir.

THREE: One aspect that doesn’t seem to have been discussed about Colin Powell’s announcement of resignation from the administration was the PLACE it was announced.
Traditionally, resignations of cabinet level officials are announced from the oval office, as the cabinet members serve “at the pleasure”, etc.
This is classic “Washington political etiquette” and tradition.
Colin Powell,on the other hand, announced his resignation himself, from his office at state. That was much more than a simple “I’m leaving”. It said, in “politico” that,
“I quit, and I’m doing it in such a manner as to state, as clearly as possible that I, The Secretary of State, disagree with and will no longer support the policies of this administration”.
It seems to me that Powell held out as long as possible trying to moderate the influences of Rove, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld and their ilk; that when it became clear that he no longer had a proverbial “snowball’s chance” of mitigation, he quit, using the strongest political “body language” possible without an open break that would have put HIM on the “enemies list”.
Powell has said that much of the “shakey” information given to him for the UN speech was false, but that he wasn’t in on the “joke”.
Further, I hope Nancy Pelosi won’t be returned as Speaker because of the many “it’s off the table” and “don’t rock the boat”, stances. It seems to me that we need new leadership there as well, even within the party.. Friends of mine tell me that impeachment hearings would have been “too devisive for the country”…I heartily disagree. The Nixon saga started slowly, too. But as more and more details came out of those investigations, even his supporters told him he had to go. As much as he hated it, even “Mr. Republican”, Barry Goldwater told Nixon…”It’s time, Dick” It would have put “our guys” in the position of telling the American people…and the world …”we can clean our own house”. If the full power of the federal legislature had been unleashed, there would’ve been a John Dean. Bush couldn’t have pardoned everybody.
Satire alert> ( API: BREAKING NEWS:The Oval Office today announced 3,462 additional pardons for undisclosed acts that may have occurred sometime in the past) <Satire alert ends
.

(Warning! Non trolling Mini Rant)
FOUR: I’m NOT trolling when I say that if the Democratic party, of which I’ve been a loyal, if critical, member for 43 years, wins what looks like a virtually unbeatable majority in both houses,…if it sits on it’s collective ass for the next four years, goes back to “business as usual”, and leaves all who have worked so hard to make a new start for the United States abandoned…well, I’ll be shopping for a new banner.
Barack Obama can’t do it all by himself, and the Congressional and Senatorial Democrats had best ALSO get off the stick, or it’ll go to the other end of the spectrum next time, and THAT is what truly scares me.
( non trolling mini rant ends …as does this post )

Rankle Hiway–

I agree with you on the Dems. We have to insist on a new way of governing, not just new faces in the same old rut. The Dems have been extremely disappointing and it is not inaccurate to point out that they deserve a fair amount of the blame for both actively adopting the de-regulation position of the right or passively allowing it to become the law of the land through cowardice about standing up to the bullies on the right. Just the fact that we’ve withstood 10 years of being treated like the terms ‘liberal’ and ‘progressive’ are swear words indicates how ineffective our own party has been. I fervently hope that an Obama win will result in a complete shift in attitude in DC. I also think we have to guard against doing to the right what we had done to us. There are Republicans of high moral character, intelligence and reasonableness. It may be a short list, but it exists and I suspect some of the better specimens who have been silenced by the extremism of their party might just become players again. We need to make a concerted effort to all work together if we want to survive this current mess and I cringe (although I do understand it) when I hear my fellow lefties generalize that all Repubs are Bush/Cheney/Rove critters. Hope we can show the right what it looks like when adults are running things. Suffice it to say that we are pretty well doomed if the McCain strategy works, hate and divisiveness carry the election and people who think like Sarah Palin are given the keys to kingdom…

John Mashey

Just to correct a misimpression:

gary aka khaki salmon palin
says:
“John seems to suggest Powell’s best option on Iraq was

– go along with it, …”

I didn’t say that at all, I said those were the choices.

Sorry if that wasn’t clear. I’ll try again:

a) Military analysts worry about intention and capability. No one in the US worries that the UK has the capability of nuclear weapons, because the UK is unlikely to ever have the intention to use them on the US.

b) People familiar with Saddam thought (with very good reason) he had the intent to obtain WMD and be willing to use them. The real questions were capability (either current or near-future) and strategy to deal with such. Even the various UN inspection groups thought that Saddam could rebuild chemical WMD within a few years, and missile work had continued right along. Of course, the nuclear effort had fallen into disarray.

For a serious, nuanced discussion, see Al Gore’s September 2002 talk at SF Commonwealth Club.

He says:
“Nevertheless, all Americans should acknowledge that Iraq does indeed pose a serious threat to the stability of the Persian Gulf region, and we should be about the business of organizing an international coalition to eliminate his access to weapons of mass destruction. Iraq’s search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to completely deter, and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power.”

He has a long, complex discussion, that quote alone would be misleading, so read the whole thing. The point is: Al Gore, who was reasonably familiar with Iraq, did *not* dismiss Saddam as a threat. I.e., he was fooled about Saddam’s then-current capabilities, along with many analysts. Everybody thought Iraq was hiding stuff from the UN inspectors, when what was really being hidden was his weaknesses. Gore of course disagreed strongly (and correctly) with Bush’s strategy.

c) Intelligence-gathering is always murky, especially in a place like Iraq, but of course, we could have spent $B’s and a year or two to find out, also allowing for better preparation of troops (like, learning the language, understanding Sunni/Shia issues, etc), and it still would have been cheaper. Still, in many cases, especially when someone is actively providing disinformation, it is hard to tell what’s really happening. It’s nice to think that intelligence reports always give crisp yes/no’s, but they don’t [and I’ve several times each visited the CIA, NSA, DSD, and talked to people from GCHQ, and used to work in the same building where “Ivy Bells” tech was built.]. When dealing with a megalomaniac dictator with Saddam’s history, it is not completely unreasonable to consider the worst case. [It may not be *right*, but it’s not unreasonable. Suppose Saddam did have a nuke, and announced that Kuwait City would be blown up. Call his bluff? Maybe.]

d) I don’t know if it happened, or would have made any difference, but I’d have wished that Powell had *demanded* a more thorough intelligence effort, but again, CIA doesn’t report to the State Department.

e) As it why it might not have made any difference if he had, or had resigned then, read:

Michael Klare, “Rising Powers, Shrinking Planet – The New Geopolitics of Energy”, 2008. See especially page 187, the map of major US bases in the Persian Gulf area. Read about how they got there.

f) Anyway, while Powell was wrong, read Gore’s talk to see that Powell was not wrong in the same way that Bush/Cheney were wrong. People sometimes have to make complex decisions with the incomplete information they have. To get to the point of resignation, most people have to feel *almost certain* that they are right, and their boss is wrong, and that would have been hard. Monday-morning quarterbacking is a lot easier.

Liberal feminist agenda??? What??? Does that mean not only overturn Roe v Wade, but women back in the kitchen and bedroom (unless of course they have inherited daddy’s millions)? Does Palin know this?

Now THAT’S freaking scary !

Wow! Amazing stuff! Just a clueless, clueless man.

John, thank you for your post. I will definitely look into reading Michael Klare’s book.

My brother-in-law and oldest sister with a top staff of about five other equally involved people and 400 Afghans ran the entire medical relief effort in Afghanistan for the United States on the ground for the last seven years. They both speak, read, and write fluent Farsi, have many friends in Afghanistan over the last 40 years, and love the Afghan people dearly. I hope my sister writes a book. Their deployed project got medical help at the village level to over nine million people over six years. The project is now over and they have been working this past 18 months on a completely different educational project They are coming back from Afghanistan for good in the early spring of 2009.

This is how they feel at this point:

(1) The full scope of the incompetence and mismanagement of the Bush Administration in Afghanistan will NEVER be fully known by either the MSM or the the American people.

(2) The full scope of the incompetence and mismanagement of the U.S. State Department under Condoleezza Rice in Afghanistan will NEVER be fully known by either the MSM or the the American people.

(3) The Congress and Senate of the United States completely failed the American people in comprehending what was happening in Afghanistan over the last eight years.

(4) All people with paper Phd’s, MBA’s, and political litmus test connections must be completely banned from service in any foreign country that involves a war zone.

(5) The primary qualifications for overseas service must be excellent native language skills, nuanced native life experience in that country, and raw street smarts. (All of which are very, very rare in the dumbed down “educated” American society of today.) One woman that was sent over showed up in Kabul in shorts! They immediately sent her home before she got her throat cut.

(6) It is now too late. Afghanistan is lost.

(7) It could be turned around by extraordinary acumen but the odds are now 60-40 against that level of skill at this late hour.

(8) They are voting for Obama/Biden and are willing to go to the White House to discuss the last seven years on the ground with a new Administration. There are powers that be that are working on making this happen.

(9) They are both very tired and, yes, fed up. But they are willing to talk with anyone in the U.S. Government who will open their eyes and listen.

(10) Say a prayer for BOTH the Afghan people and American people but especially the American people because Scott Ritter is right. If we do not start to get things right in Afghanistan and Pakistan, an American city will go up with a thermonuclear suitcase car bomb much sooner than anyone yet realizes. As of right now it is too late. But with this election there is a chance that competence could appear just in the nick of time before our fate is totally sealed.

Florida-Turning Blue

To ‘mudflats’ posters: Thank you!!! I suggest this blog to all Obama supporters that come into our Obama campaign headquarters here in Sanford, FL. Because peeking into your world has given me strength, I thought others would benefit from your down to earth observations. I hope you don’t mind.

Barack Obama will be in Orlando tomorrow (less than an hours drive) and I have tickets for my daughter and me. My niece and her family were amongst the 75,000 in Kansas City on Saturday. Too good to be true!!!

Marie in NH

Hi, first time commenter, here. My aunt is voting early in Orlando tomorrow. I told her to make sure her vote counted. She said not to worry, she would. My husband and I loved Colin Powell’s speech. It was intelligent and thoughtful. Of course the Republicans won’t listen (it’s intelligent, after all) but if they did, they would save themselves a lot of grief. My biggest fear is the purging of registered Democrati voters, and McCain stealing the election. Again. I don’t think people have to worry about him running for the Senate in 2010. I don’t think he’ll be around. I believe he is much sicker than he is letting on.

I love this blog. I recommend it to all my Obama friends and family. You give me hope when I see people going gaga over SWWNBN. Though I did see one other positive sign, ABC news just filled in NH with a Lean Democratic Blue! Yippie!

One thing, stop calling the Republicans ‘Repugs’. You are insulting my two pugs, both of whom are smarter than Sarah Palin. And no, I am not kidding about that.

One blogger asked if Palin was breastfeeding. I don’t think so. You don’t go back to work three days after having a baby if you’re nursing. (I am very unimpressed with her mothering skill. I would never have carted my son around like she is doing with Trig.)

Hello I am coming out of lurkdom to post this link to a photo of the Obama rally on the riverfront in St. Louis MO. The size of the crowd is not being reported by the MSM of course so I wanted all of my fellow Mudpuppies to have a look. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/politics/story/ECD32756B113F5D4862574E60078C696?OpenDocument

Brenda = awesome. Thanks, AKM.

The first time I saw a moose, I thought it was a cute, compact four legged furry thing, sorta god’s first attempt at a horse. Then it walked out of the moose pond. Huge, graceful and ..well.. just awesome.

16 DAYS LEFT!!!! THE POLLS ARE TIGHTENING!
OBAMA NEEDS OUR SUPPORT!
PLEASE DONATE TO HIS CAMPAIGN, EVEN IF IT’S ONLY $5.00!

Actually, I believe the Obama has asked people not to donate to him any longer but to put your money into the “down-ticket” candidates.
Obama raised $150 million in September. I don’t think he’s going to be running out of cash any time soon. There’s only two weeks left, donate to a down-ticket candidate today!

Very true, and we should focus on battleground states where Obama is not as strong….like Florida. Specifically in districts that lean republican. There are a lot of disenfranchised Republicans (I being one of them) that just need a push in the right direction. If we support down-ticket democrats in those areas, it can only help Obama too!

Hamlets Mill:

Thanks – depressing, if not surprising.

1) If people haven’t read it, they might want to try “Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq’s Green Zone”, by Rajiv Chandrasekaran, especially about competence and political litmus tests, and assess which of Iraq or Afghanistan was more badly handled. (I don’t know, personally).

2) On the encouraging side, “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time”, by Greg Mortenson & David Oliver Relin, is an inspiring story. Although on a much smaller scale, some close friends got a similar school built in Nepal. Even minimal education is a huge win.
