Say it Ain’t So, Joe (the Plumber).

16 10 2008

Barack Obama and Sam the Businessman

Last night at the debate, we were introduced to the new American Everyman – “Joe the Plumber”.  The Joe Sixpack meme wasn’t quite working out for the Republicans.  Somehow the image of a guy in a white t-shirt coming home after work, and sitting in the chair with a bag of Doritos, downinging multiple alcoholic beverages while watching the tube, actually didn’t resonate with most Americans.  Go figure.  Even people whom others would describe as “Joe Sixpack” didn’t want to identify themselves as “Joe Sixpack.”  Just not that flattering.

So, lo….a shiny new ‘Joe’ emerged from the Republican playbook.  He’s industrious, hard-working, and middle class, with an entrepreneurial spirit.  Joe the Plumber (aka Joe Wurzelbacher of Ohio)!  Any profession would have done, but the most important thing was that Joe was just like us.  Kind of like Sarah Palin with no hair.  Joe’s an independent voter, just trying to better himself, and move up in the world, not sure who he’s going to vote for, and worried about the pocketbook.  The future is uncertain for Joe.  He needs answers.  He went to Barack Obama.  And that’s when it all hit the fan.

McCain tells us at the debate, while practically giddy with ‘gotcha’, that poor Joe found out that he will have his taxes raised in an Obama administration, which will prevent him from buying the business he works for, and thus in one fell swoop, Obama dashed his American dream on the rocks.  McCain on the other hand, will save the plumber who makes more than $250,000 a year, by cutting his taxes.

Joe the Plumber was mentioned by both candidates  no less than 20 times during the debate.  This was the theme.  If you got Joe’s vote….you got the nation.

So, just who is the REAL Joe the Plumber?

  • His name is not Joe….it’s Samuel.
  • He is not a plumber…at least he doesn’t have a license
  • He does NOT like paying taxes.  In fact he dislikes it so much…he doesn’t.
  • He is not undecided, as evidenced by multiple interviews in which he happily regurgitates McCain talking points like a Republican papa bird feeding the gaping yaws of its conservative young.
  • He makes less than $250,000 a year and would therefore benefit from an Obama tax plan.  Although he said that when he asked Obama about taxes, he tapdanced around the issue “almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.”  *cringe*

What do the unions have to say about the faux plumber?

  • Tim Burga of the AFL-CIO says, “You can quote me as saying, ‘Joe is not a plumber he’s a businessman.  If we don’t elect Barack Obama, the plumbing business and working families dreams will go down the drain.'”  And yes, the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters has already endorsed Barack Obama.

And what about the other Joe?  You know, “Joe the next VP”.

“John [McCain] continues to cling to the notion of this guy Joe the Plumber,” Mr. Biden said on NBC’s Today show. “I don’t have any Joe the plumbers in my neighbourhood that make $250,000 a year. The Joe the plumbers in my neighbourhood, the Joe the cops in my neighbourhood, the Joe the grocery store owners in my neighborhood, they make, like 98 per cent of the small businesses, less than $250,000 a year.”

And the final coup de grace, as if we needed one, is that Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher’s name is misspelled on his voter registration.  So, I’m assuming that this horrible case of potential voter fraud means that the Republicans will see to it that he’ll be challenged at the polls on election day, right?  Riiiight.

UPDATE – CHAPTER TWO. BIZARRE COINCIDENCES

  • Joe’s father Robert Wurzelbacher has the same name as the son-in-law of Charles Keating.
  • Joe apparently used to live in North Pole, Alaska, just outside of Fairbanks.  His son, seen standing next to him as he talked taxes with Barack Obama was born in North Pole.  Joe made it down the stairs just in time to see his son delivered on the wood floor of their home…  as reported in The Anchorage Daily News.  I think I’ve had enough of Alaska in the news….can we stop now??

Apparently Joe earned $40,000 in 2006 and is no where near in a position to buy the company he works for that is really only worth $100,000. Joe is also a darling of the right wing radio circuit in his area and had been on their shows many times before popping up as the Republicans latest poster boy.

He looks like a skin head, has a lien on his home for back taxes and he hates Social Security and would like to see it abolished. The guy is a poster boy all right, a poster boy for the Right.

Priceless.

Is anybody else noticing that the full-of-crap emails about Barack Obama have seen a definite resurgence in the last week? Or is it just my mailbox that being overstuffed with lies? All these issues that I thought had been disputed months ago are resurfacing as the election gets closer and Republicans get more and more nervous.

Maybe I’ve just got the wrong email buddies. Anyway, with my mail box so full of crap, I’m about to give Joe the Plumber a call!

Well. It’s hard to know where to start here — but I’m going to step around the racist part and just point out that Barack hardly “tapdanced” around Sam/Joe’s question. This guy challenges the next President of the U.S. on his tax policy, and Obama gives him — a complete stranger — about five minutes of his valuable time, explaining in detail how his plan will work. That’s not tapdancing; that’s granting an uncommon degree of consideration. Ugh.

Daily Kos now reporting that Joe the Plumber lived in ALASKA!

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/10/16/23330/128/454/633139

Long before he was “Joe the plumber,” Joe Wurzelbacher lived in North Pole and Eielson Air Force Base, according to Alaska public records. Family members say Wurzelbacher came to the state in the mid-1990s and stayed about four years – long enough to have the son who can be seen standing next to him in the now famous clip of Wurzelbacher grilling Sen. Barack Obama about taxes.

“If Joe had his way, he would have stayed up here,” said Kelly Morrison, of Anchorage. Her sister, Jennifer, is Joe’s ex-wife.

I think you are missing the point here. “Joe” can easily portray anyone trying to get ahead in today’s society. I really don’t care what background “Joe” really had. What came out was what was going to happen for any small business owners under Obama’s plan.
I don’t care for Obama’s economic plan for redistibuting wealth-socialism.
Forced benevolence through wealth redistribution is not charity. It is me, by choice , not the state, who are told to love and serve our neighbor.

Obama said, ” I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.”

When we spread our wealth, it is good for others. In a free society, when the state takes my wealth and redistributes it for me, it is stealing and our freedom is gone.

As Obama supporters, we have always known that McCain is an idiotic candidate. HOWEVER, the Republicans are a highly organized criminal organization who are, right now, proceeding to prevent our voters from voting.
You, and I, need to send money and support on the ground for Obama. We can laugh, we can make fun of McCain, but we CAN NOT let up on getting our voters to the polls and we CAN NOT let up on vigilance in any way, shape, or form.
These are the final days. We MUST rise up and create a massive turnout in every single state. Our very lives depend on it.

As requested, I’m reposting this message about how to get into the RNC voice mail system so we can join the chorus of those protesting their robocalls. Here in Minnesota they are illegal and I’ve advised the RNC that I am filing a complaint with the MN Attorney General.

Slightly OT but I’m mad. These RNC robocalls need to be stopped. I called the RNC headquarters at 202-863-8500 as others on various websites are encouraging. The word is that their voice mail is full but I found a way through it. Push Option #4 – Finance. There’s a long menu of choices so I went for the big donor “Chairman’s Club” option and presto — I could leave a message.

Feel free to repost the above message on your favorite blogs. I also love this idea:

btw – I don’t believe the un-Plumber is closely related to Keating. For a few reasons. The original source of the claim is known for planting stories and creating hoaxes. The original claim also stated something to the effect that the individual was living somewhere when, in fact, that individual has been dead for 4 years. The decedent has a jr. as a survivor, aged too close to the un-Plumber to have the un-Plumber be immediate family. In addition, the wife/widow of Robert does not have the same first name as the un-Plumber’s mother.

Could be a cousin but it appears none of the brothers of Robert share the same first name as the un-Plumber’s father.

Now, the family relationship is still unclear at this point but I don’t think it’s “close” as claimed by eisenstadt. But he sure got a ton of hits on his website today, didn’t he? Yeah, and so did I.

I’ve always been curious about this:
Most Americans hope they achieve the American Dream of financial freedom and independence. Does anyone know if a candidate has ever proposed a tax structure where someone achieving this American Dream during a candidacy would get a grace period before having to pay the higher taxes?

I’ve been a Democrat for a while. But all I’ve ever heard is higher taxes for more income and lower taxes for less income. I’ve never heard about taxes might be adjusted if you move from one bracket to the next.

Seems Ohio County Officials, plumbers union are after Joe. Seems Joe legally should have plumbers license. Unions upset. Joe also owes back taxes and lien has been placed since 2007. He also has local hospital claim filed as another lien against him for 2007. County after him for back taxes. Hospital after him. Regarding taxes of small businesses McCain made claim poor Joe would be taxed more on business he is attempting to buy under Barack Obama’s plan- please read below article written explaining small businesses, taxes, etc. Obama claims seem to be true. John McCain is false. Helps everyone understand!! Written by experts on CNN Money – 10/16. Enjoy!

Go Obama!!!

_______________

In speech after speech, presidential candidate John McCain hammers on the claim that his rival Barack Obama will raise taxes on many small businesses.

At the debate on Wednesday night, McCain said, “The small businesses that we’re talking about would receive an increase in their taxes right now.”

More typically he has said: “What [Obama] hasn’t told you is that he would tax half of the income of small businesses in America,” a line used in La Crosse, Wisc., last week.

Should small business owners fear for their wallets if Obama is elected? Not the vast majority, business and tax experts say.

To make its claim, according to a McCain spokesman, the campaign counts as a small-business owner any taxpayer who files a Schedule C, E or F – the forms used to report gains and losses from business ventures and farms.

Using that definition and citing IRS data, the campaign notes that “56.8% of total small business income is earned by businesses in the top two rates, which Barack Obama has pledged to raise.”

It’s true that Obama has proposed raising taxes on the top two income rates.

But there are three main problems with McCain’s charge.
What is a small business?

First, it relies on a broad definition of what counts as a small business, including everyone who files a Schedule C, E and F.

But most people who file those forms don’t run a business for a living: Those forms are also used to report income from freelance and consulting work, real-estate rentals, and most other non-salary sources.

For example, McCain and Obama both file Schedule C returns, thanks to their book royalties – but they hardly should be considered small business owners.

In 2005, there were 21.5 million Schedule C returns filed, according to the IRS.

A more realistic definition of small businesses turns up far fewer firms. The Small Business Administration estimates that there were 6 million small businesses in 2005, as measured by those with fewer than 500 employees and with staff on the payroll other than the owner.
Who pays?

Second, even using the broad definition of small business that McCain likes, very few owners would see their own taxes rise.

That’s because the lion’s share of taxable income comes from a small number of wealthy businesses. Out of 34.7 million filers with business income on Schedules C, E or F, 479,000 filers fall into the top two brackets, according to an analysis of projected 2009 filings by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

The other 34.3 million – or 98.6% – would be unaffected by Obama’s proposed rate hike.

That includes Joe “The Plumber” Wurzelbacher, whom McCain invoked nearly two dozen times at the debate Wednesday night to illustrate the plight of the average worker and small business owner.

“Joe wants to buy the business that he has been in for all of these years … he wanted to buy the business but he looked at your tax plan and he saw that he was going to pay much higher taxes,” McCain said.

In an interview afterward with WTOL, Wurzelbacher acknowledged that he’d still like to eventually buy the plumbing company he works for but that he wouldn’t yet be hit by higher taxes.

“I want to set the record straight: Currently I would not fall into Barack Obama’s $250,000-plus,” he said. “But if I’m lucky in business and taxes don’t go up then maybe I can grow the business and be in that tax bracket – well, let me rephrase it. Hopefully, that tax won’t be there.”

Few owners are that lucky in business. In a member survey conducted late last year, the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) found that only 14% of respondents said they had $200,000 or more in annual income.

As Tax Policy Center fellow Len Berman recently told Fortune Small Business: “Most owners of small businesses have small incomes.”
What gets taxed?

Third, even if you’re one of the rare business owners making enough money to be affected by Obama’s proposed tax increases, you still won’t see a big hike in your tax bill.

McCain’s claim that Obama “will increase taxes on 50% of small business revenue” – the line he used in the second presidential debate – is incorrect because of how income is taxed.

If a business owner falls into the top bracket, that doesn’t mean that all of his or her income is taxed at the highest level.

For example: If a small-business owner makes $210,000 in taxable income, he edges into the 33% bracket, one of the two top tax rates that Obama would like to raise.

But he would pay the higher tax only on the amount that exceeds the cutoff – in 2007, the two top tax rates applied to single filers with income of $160,850 or more and joint filers with income of at least $195,850. As a single filer, this business owner would see his federal taxes increase $1,475 under Obama’s plan, which calls for raising the 33% tax rate to 36%.

“While Obama does favor raising the top two rates, the quote is not true because not all the small business income of those in the top two rates is taxed at the 33% and 35% rates,” said Gerald Prante, a senior economist at the nonpartisan Tax Foundation.

The bottom line: McCain’s claim only works by using an overly broad definition of what counts as a “small business” – and even with that definition, fewer than 2% of business owners would be hit by Obama’s proposed rate increase. For those who are affected, the increase would be levied only on a part of their earnings, not all of them.

McCain wants it both ways, to his benefit.

He wants to not to have to repudiate the “kill him” comments at his rallies; notice how he redirected the blame to Obama?

But he wants Obama to repudiate any negative comments directed at McCain.

Why is McCain unwilling to repudiate the unlawful comments directed towards Obama? This is far different than the 1st Amendment comments made about him or Sarah Palin. Plus, he made some of those same comments towards his own wife, Cindy!!!!!

In a free society, when the state takes my wealth and redistributes it for me, it is stealing and our freedom is gone.

So why isn’t it considered stealing when I pay my taxes and the rich get richer off them (thanks to tax cuts, tax breaks, and tax loop holes for the wealthy)? Talk about enforced redistribution of wealth! I actually think it’s way past time for some sort of corrective to the serious government meddling with wealth that is already in place which benefits a select few…and I don’t think it makes me a socialist to say so. Progressive places the cost of government on those who can pay it, and those who have benefited from it.

When the government invests in people its not a give-away, it either been earned, like unemployment insurance, or is expected to see a Return on investment by reducing future costs, and increasing taxable income.

I completely agree with you that it’s time to clean up our own mess and that somebody’s got to pay for that. But that’s only going to happen if those that are of that mindset stay in power long enough to clean up the mess. If 95% of us make less than $250k, then the percentage of us that happen to jump from the middle class into that higher bracket is going to be a pretty small percentage. And any tax income that may be lost by giving these Joe American Dreamers a grace period of lower taxes would likely be offset by having more people willing to participate in the tax structure if the clause was in there.

Sorry in advance. This is kinda long, but there’s no link. This letter came in my email just now. I LOVE that all manner of folks are rising up against this hate-mongering. (I especially like Frank Schaeffer’s calling a spade a spade in the Baltimore Sun.) There’s a lot at stake. Do what you can! hHh

Dear Friends and Colleagues:
We’d like to talk about the pressing issues facing our country: the woeful economy, rising unemployment, the housing crisis, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. But we can’t talk about them because John McCain and Sarah Palin have distracted us with the politics of hate and fear.

Instead of discussing the real issues plaguing Americans, McCain and Palin have turned to fear-mongering and race-baiting, stoking the prejudices of their supporters. The situation has become so critical that we’ve teamed up with Color of Change to put an end to these dangerous mob scenes.

Watch the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5mdIPNB8t8

Things have gotten so out of control that some conservatives have come forward to denounce McCain and Palin’s hate-mongering. In an Op-Ed for The Baltimore Sun, Frank Schaeffer writes: “John McCain: If your campaign does not stop equating Sen. Barack Obama with terrorism, questioning his patriotism and portraying Mr. Obama as “not one of us,” I accuse you of deliberately feeding the most unhinged elements of our society the red meat of hate, and therefore of potentially instigating violence.”

Here’s how you can take action:

Sign the open letter calling on McCain and Palin to reject the politics of hate.
Sign up for a free video subscription and get the latest on the real McCain.
Send this video to yours friends, and post it on your blogs and networking sites like Digg, where it will effectively reach those outside the choir.
Don’t let McCain and Palin undo the decades spent fighting for civil rights and equality in our country.

Yours,
Robert Greenwald
and the Brave New team

It was reported to be a blue star mother pin, signifying that she has a child serving in the military.

I flipped back and forth between Leno and Letterman. Biden did a great job on Leno and I cracked up during the skit of Obama, Palin and Bush.

McCain made me throw up a little in my mouth after listening to him on Letterman. Seriously he is delusional….I don’t need to know anything about his policies. His choice of Palin and the way he has run his campaign are all I need to know. I thought Letterman made McCain look like a fool.

Bill @19.50.59: First, your wealth IS being taken from you and redistributed— upward. Unless you are very well off, you are paying more of your income than hugely wealthy people like Warren Buffett. Warren Buffett pointed out that his secretary’s income is more heavily taxed than his, and he thinks it’s disgraceful.

Second, Obama’s comment, sorry to disappoint you, isn’t developing “legs” BC American people have wised up to the silliness of McCain’s trying to use smoke and mirrors when our house is burning down.

But just in case you’re really scared he’s a closet socialist instead of a plain old centrist Democrat, here’s the comment in context: they are talking about the flat tax, which Obama says wouldn’t raise enough revenue:

“but in truth when you add up all the revenue that would need to be raised, you’d have to slap on a whole bunch of sales taxes on. And I do believe for folks like me who have worked hard, but frankly also been lucky, I don’t mind paying just a little bit more than the waitress that I just met over there who’s things are slow and she can barely make the rent. Because my attitude is that if the economy’s good for folks from the bottom up, it’s gonna be good for everybody. If you’ve got a plumbing business, you’re gonna be better off if you’re gonna be better off if you’ve got a whole bunch of customers who can afford to hire you, and right now everybody’s so pinched that business is bad for everybody and I think when you spread the wealth around, it’s good for everybody.

He’s talking about how an improved economy will mean more customers can afford Joe’s services. That’s the big bad wealth-spreading you’re so afraid of.

One of the most unforgiveable aspects of Rovian politicking is the fear they spread, and the awful behavior that stems from that fear.

Before you “pop off” on Obama’s economic plan, please educate yourself! I’m so tired of people (like Bill) criticizing an economic plan that will ACTUALLY put money in everyone’s pocket who has a taxable income of $250,000 or less! Not to mention, those lucky enough to earn more than $250,000 will pay 36% instead of 33% on their earning over the 250k (that’s right, they also get Obama’s tax break on their first 250k). Earning’s over 250k will be taxed at 3% more than it is now – oh ya, that’ll break the bank! Socialism Bill? Give me and everyone else a break. Go back to blogging on Fox news.

Oh, I can understand why it doesn’t go over so well with a lot of folks… it IS kinda creepy as seen from the outside, and the iffy “perception” part just doesn’t carry much weight especially in a charged pro-con situation like we’ve got going on now.

Myers-Briggs, no idea, doesn’t ring a bell, but the four letters do… I must have taken some test somewhere that came with that as a result. Not sure if it was the exact same letters or in the exact same order though.

Here is what I found on PAX Americana– an article from 2006 in the Washington Post by Robert Samuelson. I think we have all felt the US’s decline in the world. We were chatting that up last night with Snorksred. But I do feel Obama can go a long way and improving our world image – and perhaps helping to redefine what our place in it should/could be.

Farewell to Pax Americana

By Robert J. Samuelson
Thursday, December 14, 2006; Page A31

With hindsight we may see 2006 as the end of Pax Americana. Ever since World War II, the United States has used its military and economic superiority to promote a stable world order that has, on the whole, kept the peace and spread prosperity. But the United States increasingly lacks both the power and the will to play this role. It isn’t just Iraq, though Iraq has been profoundly destabilizing and demoralizing. Many other factors erode U.S. power: China’s rise; probable nuclear proliferation; shrinking support for open trade; higher spending for Social Security and Medicare that squeezes the military; the weakness of traditional U.S. allies — Europe and Japan.

By objective measures, Pax Americana’s legacy is enormous. Since Hiroshima and Nagasaki, no nuclear device has been used in anger. In World War II an estimated 60 million people died. Only four subsequent conflicts have had more than a million deaths (the Congo civil war, 3 million; Vietnam, 1.9 million; Korea, 1.3 million; China’s civil war, 1.2 million), reports the Center for International Development and Conflict Management at the University of Maryland. Under the U.S. military umbrella, democracy flourished in Western Europe and Japan. It later spread to South Korea, Eastern Europe and elsewhere. In 1977 there were 89 autocratic regimes in the world and only 35 democracies, the center estimates. In 2005 there were 29 autocracies and 88 democracies.

I’m getting the sense that they really don’t know or care how awful they look as human beings any more. Does this mean that the freedom of information suit brought by Andree McCleod that resulted in the recent ruling forcing Palin to not destroy her personal emails related to state business will be subject to these sorts of fees?

It took the Immigration dept one whole freakin year just to approve my Naturalization form to become a citizen. I wasn’t suppose to be able to go and swear in under oath until Nov 17th. For some lucky reason someone called me this morning from the Immigration dept asking if I would be able to go in today and swear in to become a US citizen because my fingerprint will expire before I’m even able to swear in on Nov 17th, which means the whole process will start all over again postponing it for another year. Heck, I told the guy on the phone that I thought I already have an appt for tomorrow’s oath ceremony at the convention center only because when I took my test 2wks ago the lady had told me that my oath ceremony will be on Oct 17th. He corrected me and said, my appointment isn’t until Nov 17th and what the lady told me shows differently on my appt form . I guess there are true hard working simaritians after all in looking out for other simaritians. I truly believe God was looking after me because he knows how badly I wanted to vote this year. Heck I’ve been complaining to my husband for one year now if I’ll even be given the chance to vote during 08 election. Maybe this is a sign from God that the right man (Obama) will need as much voters as he can to win and help our country back on track. Sorry if I’m bringing up the subject of religion but I’m a Christian and proud to be one. And no I’m not a conservative, use to be but not anymore. I’ve learned throughout my life that just because you’re a Christian, Evangelical, Catholic, etc doesn’t mean you have to count out those who don’t share the same views as yours such as the topic on abortion, gays, etc. We need to accept and respect everyone’s opinion and their views of life.

What floored me was John McCain snarking in the debate “Joe, you’re rich! You’re rich.” – mocking Obama’s definition of someone who makes only $280,000 a year as rich.

Now $280k seems pretty rich to me, but I’m not American so I looked up what average salaries for different jobs were and came up with things like this:

http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Country=United_States/Salary

Admin assistant $32k
Teachers $40-50k
Construction Project managers $70k
Software Engineers $90k

or from
http://www.payscale.com/research/US/People_with_Doctor_of_Medicine_(MD)_Degrees/Salary
Family Physician $134k
General Surgeon $197k

And even:
US Senator $169k

And John McCain thinks that if Joe earns $280k a year, that doesn’t make him rich? How well is that going to play?

Please help Jamie and Alex Mallery – the REAL VICTIMS of the latest McCainigans!

Thanks to John McCain, the Mallerys have been deluged with so many calls from media that their Average American Household cannot even keep up!!!! Alex has to work a midnight shift & Jamie has been left to deal with the deluge of media seeking out that elusive “Joe”. You see, her phone number wasn’t one associated with ‘Samuel J Wurzelbacher’, but rather his ex-wife (and perhaps their OLD phone number) in 2006…. Nonetheless, every news agency from NBC, CNN, ABC, the Post, Anchorage Daily News, Warner Brothers, ETC. has been calling them non-stop Mrs. Mallery told me tonight.

“They haven’t stopped since last night at about, after 9 p.m. – I could play this machine, I mean, my husband has to go to work at midnight and it’s hard for him,” she explained, “Some have been so rude as to say ‘Is Kimberly there? & when I say ‘No’ they say, “We’ll call back in an hour,” she told me earlier tonight.

“It’s been so hard. Crazy. I mean, we don’t know him! Or his ex-wives! And we’re getting calls… oh, I can show you from all over… it’s crazy!”

Did the mention of voting ever come up?

You ‘betcha!’ “I mean, before all this, even, my husband was kinda leaning toward Obama”

Now? Well, let me put it in Mrs. Mallery’s words:

“Way to go Joe, I wasn’t even married to you & THIS is the trouble you’ve caused …. ”

Please, folks, can we send this family to Disney for an American Thanksgiving???

“Spreading the wealth…”

Thanks so much, Anonymous, for providing the context for Obama’s “spreading the wealth” comment–it’s so important for all of us to spread that clarification to those who misunderstand or purposefully misconstrue Obama’s words. Obama just makes so much common sense, which, it seems, turns out to be not that common after all. Sigh….

For more thoughts re “spreading the wealth” and the ramifications of inequality, please read this NYT piece by David Frum–yes, that conservative who was a real twit to Rachel Maddow–called “The Vanishing Republican Voter.”

Frum acknowledges that inequality taken to extremes, which is what has been taking place, and the overemphasis on “values” issues actually work against the conservative and Republican aims as well. Too bad his motive for equality is not simply for the virtue of equality in and of itself, but, still, it’s an interesting read. Be sure to click on the “Letters” link, too, for good comments about the piece.

Bill – “I don’t care for Obama’s economic plan for redistibuting wealth-socialism.
Forced benevolence through wealth redistribution is not charity. It is me, by choice , not the state, who are told to love and serve our neighbor.”

First of all, I AM living in a truly socialist society and it is a bit more complicated than that. But there is a long road between working towards a better society and a socialist society that tries to put that into effect, as complicated and full of faults as it is. But 2 questions – how do we pay to better our educational system, our health system, our roads, create more sources of energy, pay for our defense system and military and police and firemen if no one pays taxes? It isn’t redistributing wealth in the sense that you see it, it is basically paying our fair share – the more you make the more you have to put in the pot, and that is only fair. Why not help those underpaid teachers and nurses and yes plumbers by having the “haves” pay a little bit more.

The better off people are, the better everyone’s chances are to be healthy, get an excellent education live in decent surroundings in safe neighborhoods, then the better as a country we are.

17 10 2008
Jamie, Floridian in France

Oh, I forgot – something that pisses both me and my French husband off – those Repubs, and most recently McCain during the debate – keep on about US businesses paying the second highest taxes in the world. Bullcrap! First, I checked it out by googling Tax rate Comparison by Country or some such thing and it confirmed what I thought to be true – that it isn’t. And it isn’t accurate either when considering the cost of running a business – in many European countries we not only have taxes to pay, but very high social charges for our business and for each employee as well – 40% of revenue here in France BEFORE you pay your taxes. Then there are the costs and VAT to pay on top of it. McCain mentioned Ireland (though it isn’t 11% from what I’ve seen, but close to 12,5%) – where as an example – running a restaurant the costs of raw materials (food) are extremely higher, much higher than in the States. As they are here in France.

I have an American friend here who part owned a restaurant in the States and now owns one here with her husband – last year she made 152,000 € turnover and after paying costs, salaries (2 part-time) and social charges, then paying her taxes (business and personal) ended up living on about 400€/month for her, her husband and baby. She may have a lousy accountant, but it isn’t far off from what it is normally. She told me that if they had made the same turnover on an equivalent restaurant business in the States, they would be rich. So I wish someone would call McCain on his big fib – businesses are very well-off in the States compared to the rest of the world – and that is no excuse to lower taxes on big corps!!

I can totally relate to the ignorance of the masses when it comes to spewing hate for socialism and having absolutely no idea of how to differentiate between true socialism and the plans that Obama has laid out that they feel are “socialist.” Having just come back from several years in the UK, I think I’ve got a pretty good handle on it, and it is far too complicated for most people to easily grasp, so for those who are willing to spend the time figuring it out, they will, and for the others who have been listening to too much Fox news, they won’t, no matter what you say and how you explain it.

Anyway, I don’t usually get my news from yahoo, but this was on my email home page, and it has plenty of good news, so check it out. As a bonus, I don’t think anyone could consider yahoo to be real news, so they aren’t right or left leaning.

Vena: Many pats on your back {da-da, druummm roll} – proud you are a citizen.

Anonymous: Could not have said it better. Schmidt/Rove etc hoped to catch Obama (Himself) stating “spread the wealth” to get traction on “socialism” fears. If NonsenseNews debunks it, folks might not be so afraid of an extra tax of $900 on that extra $30,000 over the $250,000 ceiling. My old biz clients “get it” so the sky can stop falling now.

As for Joe… “poor Joe” (my a..) – so predictable. Time for a group hug, then maybe NonsenseNews can move on to evaluate tax plans. Not that it will matter much come Jan. 21 ~ budget cuts, not tax cuts, will be the topic de jour.

It never ceases to amaze me how the radical right just accepts whatever McCain and Palin put out there, whther it’s the terrorist claims against Obama or the use of ” Joe the plumber” when it is evident throughout the media and what they found out about ol’ Joe the plumber to be true, that it appears he was most likely a Plant of the McCain Campaign. where’s the common sense America? click on links below for more interesting insight see;

I don’t care for Obama’s economic plan for redistibuting wealth-socialism.

Yo, Bill–
Where were you during Civics/Citizenship classes or American Government? Or did you refuse to attend public school because it was paid for with “redistributed wealth”? Which would explain a lot, actually…
Taxes are the price we pay to have government and it’s services: schools, roads, utilities, police and fire protection, court systems, military protection, etc., etc., etc. ETC.
Where did you THINK all of that stuff came from? The Socialism Fairy?

I don’t expect to ever come close to $250K, myself. If I made 20% of that, ever, it would be amazing. Still, I’m very aware that my TRULY middle-class salary puts me in a position to be better off than about 80% of the people in the world and I’m extremely thankful for that. I work hard and I hope that my taxes (and in a less worldly sense, my good works!) will benefit me in future years, when I need some of the benefits I’ve helped fund for decades.

Will Joe have to vote with a provisional ballot?

Possibly. He’s been registered for quite some time with a misspelled name and should have corrected it. If he votes with a provisional ballot it will not even be opened until day 10 after the election. This is the same sort of person that the Republicans want thrown off the voter rolls in Ohio.

It’s kind of disgusting that this guy has been doing scab work for 6 years, almost certainly illegally. Plumbers in Ohio usually sign up through the local union hall and it takes at least 5 years of training before they can even sit for an examination to get a plumbing certificate through the state.

He’s been taking work from union contractors.

I love this blog! So – the people who support the guy who said Americans are tired of the pettiness in politics continue to lap up the most petty aspects of this year’s election. Now they are scoffing at $1,000 in back taxes for a plumber in Ohio who nobody knew until the guy had the guts to question Obama to his face.

I tell you, I can’t wait for Obama to win. Once he gears up his massive spending and wealth redistribution programs, he’s going to exacerbate what already will be an inflationary exit to this recession. It could be bad guys, really bad. …I’ll be checking back out on this blog in about 2 to 3 years to see who’s scoffing then.

Bell,

I must agree with you regarding giving some back to improve this country by helping improve others. Those who don’t want to give are perfect example of Mr. Scrooge! Heck if I was making well over 250k I wouldn’t mind having to pay taxes. You would think that one would rather make that type of amount and give a little back than not to make any at all!
