This message just in from Representative Les Gara. He’s taking a break from slaying dragons (Meg Stapleton) and fighting off hordes of invading barbarians (McCain lawyer Ed O’Callaghan and minions) to remind us about another front in the battle for Alaskan politics.
There are several close house races in Alaska this year that need some additional help. Whether it’s a long-held progressive seat that may be in trouble from the re-energized Palin base that will turn out in this election, or a bold newcomer that actually stands a chance of toppling a conservative seat…they need us. Two of them are names you’ll recognize as heros of the Legislative Council that voted to release the Troopergate report – Bettye Davis, and David Guttenberg!
Let’s send Sarah Palin back to Juneau to meet a shiny new Progressive Legislature!
if you are an Alaskan who wants to see your state head in a new direction, or if you are a friend from the Lower 48 who has become fond of our great state, and want to help, read on.
******************From Les Gara*****************************************
With your help we can win the close races we have this year, and win a Democratic majority in the Legistlature for the first time in two decades!
Please help today online at the HDCC website – HERE
This year is our best chance in two decades to win control of the 40-member state House. Democratic numbers have been increasing steadily in recent years: from 10 in 2000, to 12 in 2002 to 17 in 2006. We have an even stronger slate of candidates this year.
Anything you give will go straight to Democratic candidates and advertising, so please consider a donation…
Unless it’s OK that Republicans have used their power to block health insurance reform; block educational opportunity for Alaskans who need it (we’re one of only 10 states with no pre-K program); and block Alaskans from sharing in their state’s opportunity.
We need four seats to take the majority in the Alaska House of Representatives, and likely two seats to form a majority coalition.
How about a Dem legislature and a recall petition!
Go Alaska! Give her a nice Welcome Home!
Great reminder, AKM….I’m in for a donation, next week when my check comes in.
TOTALLY off topic but Joe the Plumber…doesn’t even have a license.
If he doesn’t need one because he works for someone else…Who the heck’s license will he work under when he’s the boss. Something smells.
HOLLAND, Ohio — Joe the Plumber said Thursday he doesn’t have a license and doesn’t need one. Joe Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, the nickname Republican John McCain bestowed on him during Wednesday’s presidential debate, said he works for a small plumbing company that does residential work. Because he works for someone else, he doesn’t need a license, he said.

RECALL/IMPEACHMENT!!
God I’m so sick of “joe the plumber” and did you see him this morning? UGH! neo-pig without lipstick! Doesn’t like Social security or paying taxes.
Oh…! Maybe he belongs to one the the groups like SP? The AIP???
She doesn’t like to pay taxes either, but when she gets home to Alaska…the taxman be waiting! 😀

Analysis of Debate – Readability and sentence complexity of candidates shows McCain’s choice required a higher grade level to understand her debate rhetoric.
This suggests what many of us may have suspected, that McCains choice (SP) may come aacross as more impressive to those who don’t quite grasp what she said.
—–
(CNN) — An analysis carried out by a language monitoring service said Friday that Gov. Sarah Palin spoke at a more than ninth-grade level and Sen. Joseph Biden spoke at a nearly eighth-grade level in Thursday night’s debate between the vice presidential candidates.
Sen. Joe Biden used 5,492 words during the debate; Gov. Sarah Palin used 5,235.
The analysis by the Austin, Texas-based Global Language Monitor said Palin, governor of Alaska and the GOP vice presidential nominee, used the passive voice in 8 percent of her sentences, far more than the 5 percent used by the Democratic senator from Delaware.

Let’s count the ways Palin is a “reformer.” I’ll go first:
Opposed clean water initiative.
Didn’t support clean elections initiative.
Supports aerial wolf slaughter.
Allows (or instructs?) her administration to manipulate the wording of the ballot initiatives to achieve above agendas.
Please continue…..

Go Alaska , hooray:)
My last comment to Joe the plumber.
JTP “This isn’t national?” on MSNBC this a.m. no it’s “WORLD” you idiot.
Joe, enjoy your 15 minutes, because the rest is going to be hell. You are now going to become the poster boy of everything that is wrong with contracting rip offs in America. You will strengthen unions and get Obama/Biden elected.
We mudflatters thank you for everything you are about to do for our cause.

Hugs to me…I just cast my vote for President Obama and Vice President Joe (the real one!) Biden.
I’m still wearing my “I voted” sticker. First day of early voting and there was a line at 1:00 at our small and beautiful North Carolina town’s early voting spot, appropriately, the library!
Also, the Irish bookies have decided, after last night’s debate, to pay off the bets made by people who bet on Obama for president! They are that sure of his victory!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081016/od_uk_nm/oukoe_uk_bookmaker_obama_odd
I’m hoping SWWNBN will find a really frosty welcome on her homecoming in November and that she’ll have some real watchdogs checking on her every move.
Go Alaskans!
Sorry, my story about the Irish bookmakers paying off early for those who bet on Obama went into spam I guess.
Apparently they are so convinced after last night’s debate that Obama will win, they are paying off early! “We declare this race well and truly over and congratulate all those who backed Obama,” See my raised glass for the Irish!
I voted today in NC for President Obama and Vice President Joe( the real one!) Biden. I’m still wearing my “I voted” sticker.
Go Alaskans…assure SWWNBN a frosty reception on her return to you in November.Make sure she has many honest folks in government watching her every step.
Dr. Chill, I sincerely hope that a gov undergoing ethics investigations cannot appoint anyone to a vacant senate seat. Besides that, I hope that even if Stevens is found guilty it is not as though he is automatically ejected from the position he holds. Crossing fingers…

Sarah Palin-Wolf Killer!
Donated to the Alaskan HDCC — small amount, but encourage all AKM mudpuppies to do the same! This will work even better than our Planned Parenthood donations, the lower 48 will be watching carefully for Palin’s frosty return.
Hah, you’ll never be rid of Palin, she’s a robot, and shell live forever! Just check out http://mypalininterview.com/ for proof of this. It’s a website connected to her computerized brain, and you can listen to her thoughts on any subject.
There was a letter going around (with envelope included) at the Obama rally, so I picked one up and made my donation a while back……… hopefully lots of others did as well.
This election has really resonated with a lot of Alaskans — the us vs. them mentality, the explosion of media scrutiny, etc. Has really made me think (and hopefully others too) about what draws people to Alaska, how to have a future Alaska that is not so divided. Unfortunately, a lot of people are in Alaska because of A) oil jobs, B) military, and C) PFDs, and that means a lot of conservative republican voters plus end of roaders. This is a really challenging time for America (and the rest of the world), and a time for Alaskans to do some deep soul-searching about how best to effect positive change here.
I wish Alaska would get rid of the PFDs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Three questions:
a) Did — or did not — Mrs Palin have the following reaction to Obama’s win over Clinton in the primary:
“SAMBO BEAT THE BITCH”
…and if so, what does that make her? A racist, or a bitch? or both?
b) Isn’t it ironic that a kid is being indicted for ‘hacking’ into Mrs Palin’s government Yahoo! email account, when Mrs Palin in fact hacked into a collegue’s email account on the oil & gas commission?
Quid pro quo: where is her indictment? Oh, duh, that’s right, she is ‘above the law’
c) What is life going to be like for her (and hers) when she gets kicked back to Alaska after she takes her party down in flames next month? I hope the alaska ear is ALL OVER HER like, er, “white on rice.”
Burn, Baby, Burn.
checked out http://www.mypalininterview.com and asked her, “Are you stupid” to which she answered, “I certainly am…………….”
What fun! Thanks Mr. O’Reilly:)
i just donated. darn, i feel good
@DrChill (10:15:38) :
Fortunately we passed a law in 2004 that prohibits a sitting gov. from appointing a Senator when the seat is vacated. Now we have to have an election. This was passed to prevent another situation like we had in 2002 when Frank won the gov. seat, resigned from the Senate, and appointed his daughter Lisa to fill his seat. Of course the same year we passed the new law, “we” also elected Lisa to the seat in her own right, but we won’t go there…
JOE THE PLUMBER IS A FAKE!!!!
“Joe the Plumber is not exactly a plumber and he’s “not even close” to making the kind of money that would result in higher taxes from Democrat Barack Obama’s proposals.
Not all the attention has been welcomed. Wurzelbacher, 34, told the Associated Press that he was not a licensed plumber. Because he works for a small company that does residential work, he said, he doesn’t need to be licensed.”

Daily Kos is reporting that there is a rumor “Joe the Plumber” is actually the brother of Charles Keating’s son-in-law. Wouldn’t that be an interesting twist? Personally, I’ll wait for confirmation of this. It is hard to believe that the McCain camp would be stupid enough to pull in a ringer with those connections.

By the way, listening on the radio was kind of yuk because you heard all his grunts & sighs amplified. Ick.

McCain and Palin always need a gimmick. JOE Sixpack, JOE the Plumber, Say it isn’t so JOE! Again with the distractions and still Palin has not faced a real news conference. Are people really falling for this?
Does Alaska really want her back?
After all, this is a person who has pretty much made her living from the public teat since her Wasilla mayoress days and, tainted as she is by the recent scab picking, her foreseeable future will have to be in the political arena or else as some sort of hanger-on clutching onto some other elected official’s coattails.
Unless she goes whole hog and becomes an ordained minister and gets her own personal flock to fleece (a la pastor thomas Muthee)?
Meanwhile, this is pretty devastating, lol.
Europe mocks ‘half-baked Alaskan’ Palin
“…We were, the Irish Times warned, “just a heartbeat away from the biggest half-baked Alaskan nightmare.” Britain’s Financial Times said his selection of vice president raised serious questions about John McCain’s judgment and added: “The Palin appointment is yet more proof of the way that abortion still dominates American politics.”
Prominence was given to an onslaught on Palin’s environmental and animal rights record by veteran ex-film star Brigitte Bardot. Spain’s left wing El Pais described Palin as “a figure who comes from the America that is farthest removed from and incomprehensible to the European spectator.”…

It was real all right. Saw it with my own eyes in real time. It came right at the end when the debate had just finished.

…..some thoughts on the debate….Tax Policy (reversing tax cuts for the rich) is THE ISSUE of these elections.
The Bush cuts have been a massive transfer of wealth to the top 5%. Although McSleazy rightly opposed them, now that he’s ‘running’ (“I don’t want to raise taxes on anyone”) he criticizes Obama’s concern for us (95%) as class-warfare! At one point he even suggested that “WE don’t want any of that wealth redistribution stuff”. As Obama pointed out, the trickle-down theory (Let them eat cake!) is an illusion……why wouldn’t 95% of us not want change?
Obviously, the people at Palin rallies can be persuaded to vote for other issues, rather than their best interests. These would be the right-to-lifers, gun owners, sanctimoniousness-of -marriage gay-haters, racist rednecks, creationists, Victory-patriots (and the free-trade with Colombia crowd.)
But there is one more category of unlikely Republican voter….those represented by The Plumber. These are people who vote Rep. with the romantic notion that one day (soon) they may well be rich. So now that Joe is dreaming of being a Plumbing Tycoon (McSleazy “Congratulations, you are rich”) he hates taxes. Not Patriotic, as Palin would say.
The worst part of the debate is the follow-up Focus Group with these ‘dumbass undecideds’, who still can’t make up their minds… and they might well decide the elections. God help us!
Thanks Annette. That ought to impress the hell out of viewers around the world. What a creepy dude. Journalists are probably all salivating, thinking about the photo ops that his being president would afford them — he & Bible Spice would have their own papparazi following them around waiting to get the scary face & winking photos. Ick.
You’ve got my support will send off what I can to help out! We love you Alaska!!!!
I love PayPal, my friends, and I am now a donor to the HDCC. Even though McCain did not use ‘my friends’ last night, I still donated to the Obama/Biden campaign.
You know, I watched part of the debate last night, and I could not believe how disrespectful McCain was to Obama. The eye rolls, the harumphing, but especially, the interrupting. WTF? I couldn’t watch the whole thing because I was too upset. Obama stayed on message for the most part, kept his calm and cool, flashed that wonderful smile, but he looked so weary. I wanted to make him some comfort food to make him feel better.
I have no respect for McCain. None. What a sad way for him to wind down (hopefully) his career.
Also read on Daily Kos that Joe the plumber has a lien on his property for unpaid taxes and hasn’t saved any money to buy the business even if the boss was willing to sell it.
I also think he was a plant being who he is related to –
Big news!

Plus, Cindy McCain is a very very sad woman. I hope she gets some help and drops the deadweight (her hubby) when the election is over.
Thanks AKM for the plug for all to donate to Alaskan races – I’d been meaning to but kept donating to Obama every time SP freaked me out! SO, my donations after this debate went straight to Ethan Berkowitz (opposing creepy yelling dude Don Young) and to Mark Begich (opposing yelling indictment dude Ted Stevens). Since Senator Obama did such a beautiful job of defusing SP this time by completely ignoring her once again, I can now breathe a sigh of relief and catch up on my business, play with & cuddle my dogs (who’ve been VERY LONELY and think I’m a lunatic for running around the house pulling my hair out for the last 6 weeks) and my SLEEP! AKM, my thanks will never be enough, but you know in your heart how much difference your site has made in this election. I remain vigilant, and outspoken, and will continue to work on the local Obama campaign til the very last second. After that, my energy will turn to making SP’s return to AK – well you know. I’m looking forward to it a little more than I should be! I really was a very quiet person politically before this happened, but I can never go back — too much has changed! Now the whole world knows that we keep electing whackos and thieves, so we must admit our shame and move forward with many changes on the horizon (where Russia is out there somewhere). By the way, my mother-in-law has been in Russia for the last three months, and she reports that she can’t see us at all in Alaska! What gives?
SMR
There is already, in the UK Times today (serious newspaper), they had an article with this picture of Mc, and a make-up a caption competition, I’m almost feeling sorry for him. What a berk!!
My thoughts:
Tax cuts have never been a useful tool in stimulating the economy. Fed policy controls the economy, tax cuts only adversely affect the deficit. The Republicans always point to the first Reagan tax cut as to why I am wrong. For those around in the late 70s, you may remember Paul Volker jacking up the interest rates mightily in order to combat high inflation. It stagnated the economy for the latter part of the Carter administration and the beginning of the Reagan years. He dropped the interest rates hard in ’82 and ’83, the same time Reagan’s 1st tax cut took place. The economy took off and now everyone believes it was due to the tax cuts. Reagan had 2 more tax cuts….and they did nothing for the economy but did produce the highest deficits in history at that point. There have been 3 other significant tax cuts and they all produced the same results. Conversely,Bill Clinton raised taxes…remember the sin taxes and highway gas tax increases. All the conservatives said it would kill the economy but as we know that did not happen and we produced 2 years of surplus. Ironically, a major reason for the great economy of the 90s was the micromanagement of the interest rates by Alan Greenspan. Unfortunately he micromanaged it right into the ground and there is no room left there to dig us from the current hole.
I watched the debate on CBS, and after the debate it seemed McCain was (again?) confused about which way to go to get off the stage. So his posture looked like embarassed clowning at being confused and redirected, but by that time the camera angle was too high and distant for me to see his tongue out. He did seem nervous and agitated, needing to let off steam like a schoolboy after an exam. Those photos will live forever. 🙂

So true, asianHusseingrrl. She looks like such a miserable woman. Of course I would be too if I was married to old Johnny.
People are so frustrating! A co-worker was telling me he’s undecided but leaning toward McCain because there’s too much we don’t know about Obama. The same old crap about not knowing where he comes from or whatever. I then told him the facts about Obama’s background but he didn’t really want to hear it. I asked if he agreed with McCain’s policies on the ecomony, healthcare, etc – he said not really which is why he’s undecided. He likes some of Obama’s ideas but just couldn’t vote for a guy like that. I have no idea what that means…I suspect he’s a tad racist but doesn’t want to come out and say it. Who knows…what I do know is that I’m losing my patience!

McCain for President of Comedy Gold ‘08!
(brought this over b/c I didn’t realized we’d jumped threads. Enjoy!)
When you talk to someone and they don’t want to vote for Mcinsane, and they say “but I couldn’t vote for Obama….” Racsit! Time to remind them Yes Obama is half white!!!
But does it really matter? John mcinsane is “white” and SP and they are hatemongers and racist. Why vote for them???
A neighbor of mine– someone who has always voted Republican– whose beliefs are strong fiscal conservatism– told me he is “seriously considering voting Libertarian” this year. He’d never swing to the democratic ticket- but I figure, one less vote for McCain/Palin.
I have to say, how grateful I am to fivethirtyeight.com …Nate Silver and his pie charts. Seeing the Win Percentage pie on the left change every day is what keeps me going. At first the red pie slice looked like an average helping, big enough to hold ice cream. It can’t be called a helping now.
Through the past week, it looked like PacMan swallowed a red snowball, and was grinning. Now it’s like PacMan with lipstick. 🙂
No wonder the Irish guys have paid off the bets. 20:1 odds.
Right, Barack. Let’s not get overconfident. But now we can breathe.
Thanks, Nate. I’m starting to like math.

Milbank: Secret Service is stopping reporters from interviewing people at Palin rallies
WashingtonPost.com
From Dana Milbank’s chat transcript:
I have to say the Secret Service is in dangerous territory here. In cooperation with the Palin campaign, they’ve started preventing reporters from leaving the press section to interview people in the crowd. This is a serious violation of their duty — protecting the protectee — and gets into assisting with the political aspirations of the candidate. It also often makes it impossible for reporters to get into the crowd to question the people who say vulgar things. So they prevent reporters from getting near the people doing the shouting, then claim it’s unfounded because the reporters can’t get close enough to identify the person.
Stevens is on the stand right now!
I thought that reporters had been banned from leaving their little area beginning over a week ago. Is it really taking Washington Post until now to cotton on to that?
Sarah (11:09:40) wrote : “McCain and Palin always need a gimmick. JOE Sixpack, JOE the Plumber, Say it isn’t so JOE! Again with the distractions and still Palin has not faced a real news conference. Are people really falling for this?”
I’m telling you, track those Joes! McCain’s campaign is fixated on Joe! He never got over not getting to have Joe Lieberman as his running mate.
AKM, I donated to Mark Begich. Thanks for the reminder. I guess I paid for 30 seconds and then some…
YES! We must purge and ‘repudiate’ the current AK repugnicans:
Gov Palins (Todd & Sarah)
AG Talis Colberg
Rep Wes Keller
Rep Mike Kelly
Rep Bob Lynn
Sen Tom Wagoner
Sen Fred Dyson
Sen Lesil McGuire
Did I forget anyone? I’m sure there’s more…
BTW: A ‘VERY’ conservative co-worker (we are talking lover of Rush, Hannity, Reagan and all things NRA) of mine just admitted to me that he thinks Sarah will only be a 1 term governor!!!
Maybe less?? 😉 AKM

@Whabs….Joe the plumber doesnt need a licence? How crazy is that. We have a small mechanical company. Hubby is licensed…and employees must also have a license or at least be a registered apprentice. An apprentice cannot work on his own either. Who does Joe think he is kidding?
caligrl Hussein wolves eat Palin (10:58:03) :
“Joe the Plumber is not exactly a plumber and he’s “not even close” to making the kind of money that would result in higher taxes from Democrat Barack Obama’s proposals.
Not all the attention has been welcomed. Wurzelbacher, 34, told the Associated Press that he was not a licensed plumber. Because he works for a small company that does residential work, he said, he doesn’t need to be licensed.”
That can’t possibly make his employer happy. I’m sure that all the companies customers were thinking they were getting a licensed plumber. I wonder if “Joe” ends us losing his job after his 15 minutes of fame. He certainly isn’t reflecting well on his employer.
I would love to donate more, but I did donate $20. Les and David are amazing and Alaska needs them! Come on people, no amount is too small. It all adds up and NO ONE is going to judge! Even if you donate $2…..it all adds up!

“Joe the Plumber” is already starting to regret signing on with the Republicans. And, as usual, this is blowing back on McCain. He didn’t vet “Joe” any better than he vetted Sarah.
Why McCain thinks using a skinhead as a poster child for his campaign is a good idea totally alludes me.
Perhaps you all already know of this opportunity, but here is a link to the Orange to Blue page at Daily Kos (scroll down). It allows you to contribute to several ‘game-changing’ candidates at once…as much or as little as you want (even $1). Their orange to blue list currently includes senate candidates Begich (Alaska) and Franken (Minnesota), among others whose victories could provide the filibuster-proof majority that up until recently no one imagined was possible. It also includes key Representative races. Check it out.

McPalin seem to be touting Joe the Plumber as an everyman. But frankly, my dad was a plumber/pipefitter and he didn’t make anywhere NEAR 250K.
I watched a bit of David Letterman last night and he was BRUTAL on McCain and his pending visit today. He hinted that she may bring the beauty queen with him.
NYC is the bluest city in a state a state that was +33 Obama in the last poll.
Perhaps both JM and SP are biting off a bit more than they wanted in the very public appearances over the next week. Perhaps a nice Philadelphia welcome in NYC.

When you visit the orange to blue list of candidates, please give a dollar or two to Scott Rice of OK. He is going head-to-head with the infamous anti-choice, pro-torture, global-warming denier James Inhofe of Oklahoma, and he needs our help. Since entering politics, State Sen. Andrew Rice has proven to be an unapologetic Democratic voice in one of the most conservative states in the country . His progressive stances on health care reform, telecom immunity, international affairs and the Iraq War, and environmental affairs are solidly and proudly progressive. Thanks!

Another paypal $20 for a good cause! Sam Wang of the Princeton electoral site strongly recommended that folks stop sending $$ to the presidential campaigns, as that race is sewn up; he encourages more support to downticket races. And Alaska certainly deserves some love.

“I’m going to run away to Alaska.”
🙂
As a resident of the lower 48, I cannot fathom how Alaska (with the exception of visitors to this blog) elected Palin in the first place. Were voters not informed of her “fiscal and other activities” in Wasilla? Were there no debates were her ultra-conservative views became known? Did oil rebate money talk louder than her views?
I visited Alaska in 2001 and talked with a friend living in Anchorage. She described the Alaskan population as made up of 1/3 military, 1/3 “green” environmental types and 1/3 oil industry. Is this true and does it explain Palin’s election?
I would like Democrats to take back the legislature in Alaska but I would also like to see Palin ousted from office and from the national political arena forever. I do no want to see her set up for Palin 2012. Can Alaskans recall her? Pull a California-style stunt?
Please, Alaska, save us.
