Who is the Real Barack Obama?

15 10 2008

Despite the fact that Barack Obama has been campaigning for president for the past two years, there are still people (like Sarah Palin) asking the question, “Who is the real Barack Obama?” After all, despite speeches, town hall meetings, debates, interviews, press conferences, and two books….we’re still not quite sure. *whispers* Did you know his middle name is ….(looks around to see who might be listening)….Hussein?

I mean, Saddam Hussein had that name too! Clearly, Obama is not only a muslim, but a muslim terrorist, unless we’re talking about his angry pastor. HIs best buddies are probably terrorists too, and I’ll bet you he wasn’t even born in the United States. You can tell a lot by a name…

I wanted to clarify a point brought up in the last thread. It does no good to complain about untruths from someone else if we are guilty of the same, even if it is energized by fervor.

1.It is NOT in the AIP doctrine that one has to be a natural-born citizen of Alaska to become a citizen of whatever Alaska would be if it were to secede.

2. The position of AIP is not necessarily to secede, but to grant Alaskan citizens the Opportunity to have the vote, which under UN territories laws, at the time that Alaska was made a state, the actual choices that were supposed to be afforded to them:
From AIP site:

Until we as Alaskans receive our Ultimate Goal, the AIP will continue to strive to make Alaska a better place to live with less government interference in our everyday lives.

The Alaskan Independence Party’s goal is the vote we were entitled to in 1958, one choice from among the following four alternatives:

1) Remain a Territory.
2) Become a separate and Independent Nation.
3) Accept Commonwealth status.
4) Become a State.

The call for this vote is in furtherance of the dream of the Alaskan Independence Party’s founding father, Joe Vogler, which was for Alaskans to achieve independence under a minimal government, fully responsive to the people, promoting a peaceful and lawful means of resolving differences.

Let’s stick to facts.
It calls for the actual legislated UN protocol to be enacted.

Palin has enough crap in her history that nothing need be augmented.
The problem/fact here is that Palin was more recently, and for an extended length of time, attached to AIP and NOT the Republican Party.
No, she was not a friend of Joe Vogler.
But, she has claimed to be a life-long republican, and her behavior during her tenure as Mayor of Wasilla, coupled with the claims of the AIP former chairman, ring truer than any life-long Republican claims. She was still close to AIP when she decided to ‘take out’ Ruedrich (as shown in Chrysin’s statement), and then proceeded to go after the Repub ticket.
Palin is neither a loyal AIP member nor a loyal Repub. Sarah is whatever Sarah needs to be to get Sarah to the top.

It may do some good, but perhaps less good. Its best to not sink to low levels.

I agree that its important to be on track for truth rather than looking for dirt.
I think that the most you can say is that SP is somewhat sympathetic to the AIP, she had very close, no, INTIMATE ties with an AIP member.

I don’t think it amounts to much, except that by SP’s own standard of -guilt by association, she “has close ties” with a radical group.

And yes, I say radical since the AIP is okay with secession… not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it is radical.

Denise- that statement from Sarah Plain (typo intended) will be thrown back at you by millions. That the report vindicated her because she said so will be believed by millions. I’m ashamed to say that so many American voters don’t often think. If a political party would run Adolf Hitler for President and then try to spin every night on TV that he was a great leader; you would be amazed how many votes he would get. I’d bet that 30% of the voters wouldn’t vote for a candidate not from their party under any circumstances. People from the other party are EVIL. I really doubt that many of the voters in support of Palin know anything about her other than she is the Governor of Alaska. If she is Governor and she is from their party she has to be good, right? Why else would the people of Alaska vote for her? I’m sure that the average elementary school pupil knows more about the issues and candidates than many voters. In my state we cote on bond issues almost every election. People in my state constantly rail against taxes but they almost always vote FOR the bond issues as if someone else is paying off the bonds not the taxpayers.

You’d think that the Obama/Biden advertising team could run an advert for the remainder of the campaign using the clip, widely circulated already, that has McLame saying “if you’re running a negative campaign it’s because you don’t have your own issues/platform to run.” That, at least, was his position when he was running in 2000. He’s been in Anchorage for a very very long time (I’ve known one of his sons since Jr high, and I’d guess he’s been here close to 50 years based on my age and that of his older children), and so should have a very good grasp on the politics of AK and how Bible Spice got to be governor in the first place — which is, I think, a question lots of people are asking! The attacks on Obama about palling around with “terrorists” is getting to me. How about McCain’s cozy relationship with a convicted burglar who also tried hatch kidnapping plots, arson plots against the Brookings Institution , plots to kidnap American citizens and release them in Mexico and several other hair-brained plots. He even advised his radio audience on how to kill ATF agents; “Shoot them in the head because they’re probably wearing body armor.”

The excerpt below is from Wikipedia:

Relationship with Senator John McCain

In 1998 Liddy hosted a fundraiser at his house for John McCain’s re-election campaign at which guests could have their pictures taken with McCain and Liddy.[6] Over the years, Liddy has made four contributions totaling $5,000 to Senator John McCain’s campaigns — including $1,000 in 2007. In November 2007 Senator John McCain, 2008 Presidential candidate, went on Liddy’s radio show. Liddy greeted him as “an old friend,” and McCain replied. “I’m proud of you, I’m proud of your family… It’s always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.”

I will preface this by saying I am a registered democrat but mainly because independents cannot vote in a primary in my state. I pride myself on being an independent and have not voted a straight ticket in my life. When I analyze the candidates, political party is not one of my criteria. With that being said I am a huge Obama supporter.
Just prior to the last presidential election I had the opportunity to talk to James Carville and Mary Matalin both of which are very unimpressive when not reading a script. I asked Carville who he would be supporting in the election if Bush was the democrat and Kerry was the republican. He looked at me as if I were an alien, muttered something about a platform and ran from the room.
Next I asked Matalin if in her perfect political system, there would be political parties. She responded that if there weren’t she wouln’t have a job.
I think this all goes to show, that as energized as this election is….many if not most people still cannot look past there party affiliation and would vote for anyone that has an R or a D after their name. Am I wrong on this assumption?

CNN does not post vids of everything they air. Someone posted on the last thread that the transcript is on CNN. The point being, the piece on AIP aired and was viewed yesterday. McCain has no leg to stand on. They are making their attempt at trying to scare CNN. CNN does not fear McCain camp. It’s campaign tactics and BS. I don’t believe dailykos as their site you take with a grain of salt for all truthful.

Rick Sanchez who did the piece on CNN yesterday, has a message on his Twitter board today as follows:

“mccain: “doesn’t think i have guts to bring up bill ayers” should he? how should obama respond? this could be fun, showdown ok corral”

The McCain camp is baiting him. CNN has down the Ayre’s piece to death on all their shows. The AIP has been mentioned in passing a few times, but that was the first time I believe an indepth piece was done. I left my message that he should not do Ayre’s piece as it’s been done by everyone else at CNN. Thanked him for stepping up and doing AIP.

Threatening lawsuits — that’s BS. Not a leg to stand on.

You won’t see Wolfe doing a piece on it. He’s still sucking up trying to get a Palin interview. The only other one possibly would be Campbell Brown depending on the day. She runs hot and cold. Takes a stand and the next wimps. Roland Martin doesn’t have a daily show or he would. Martin gets it compared to the other pundits and journalists. I can’t remember what the detail was, but Martin when he was covering the election for I think CNN 8 years ago, took sick. Ended up he had to declare bankruptcy due to medical. He’s experienced what most of the others have not.

Frankly the GOP has been philosophically bankrupt for many years now, so I tend to lean toward Democrats who understand that government has a role in helping promote the general welfare, and securing liberties.

I think advanced voting techniques, ( Ranking multiple candidates, rather than choosing just one) would help make it easier to support 3rd party candidates.

I agree, Cyanamen Hussein!

Some time ago I had been SO WORRIED and upset, and my son kept telling me all was well, we were going to make it, etc., and one night, after reading Mudflats and the polls and information about everything, I got into bed, in the dark, and closed my eyes, and, unbidden, I “saw” a map with the states gently, joyfully, turning BLUE one by one! I don’t go in for “visions” and stuff, but I just felt it was right – and obvious – and true! America would not be fooled! America is, like all people, GOOD at heart! Americans are perceptive enough to see and do what is best in every way!

Since then the polls have gotten better and better, but the rhetoric from the Rs has gotten worse and worse! And people are getting rabid! And it’s not about getting our heads together and deciding, seriously, together, where we need to go and who can help us get there! And now all this serious, “Oh,-yeah,-everybody-knows-this” talk about purging voter lists and threatening voters and disenfranchising whole blocks of voters! AAAAghgh! I even used to trust the MEDIA, for heaven’s sake!

I agree with Cynanamen! We need to keep working, keep our minds on Obama’s lead – high road, Hope, bringing people together rather than tearing them apart, seeing the BEST in each other and calling to it – leaving our R. neighbors and family members a way BACK after the election to work together again to make things better after Obama wins! And keep our own minds OPEN to what he says: “WE ALL LOVE AMERICA – we just have different ideas of the best way to do that.”

I know I’m idealistic and even naive about a lot of things, but I WON’T be complacent or “lulled into a sense of false security” in this election! We get so much information and support here on this site! THANKS YOU, AKM!! I hope and believe we’re all finding ways OFF this site to WORK to make a difference and work for Obama/Biden and the other candidates who see and desire these GOOD changes that will help everyone — even those dear Rs who don’t want to admit it.

HOPE! Hussein That One GOBAMA!!

A huge concern is how easily the Right has convinced millions of people that the only media they can trust is Fox News. I’m not sure you’re wrong, Tom. But I think you only expressed a piece of it here…and that piece seems fairly generational. I think a lot of the younger crowd aren’t as sure as their parents about “the party thing”…but know who they like, who speaks to them, who supports what is dear to their hearts. For my own generation (I’m 50-ish) and older I think, sadly, it sometimes works the other way. We (although I hope not I) mistake what is dear to our “party” for what should, in most cases, be dear to us.

When that superimposition doesn’t quite fit, there’s a lot of cognitive dissonance people don’t know what to do with. And since we don’t really have any viable third party choices in this country (and I don’t mean we don’t have other good people running for office…I just mean lots of people don’t take these other candidates seriously because they don’t think they can win), we tend to fall back on the one or the other party whose causes most fit…again, even if it is very often an ill fit.

This speaks volumes to the limitations and dangers of a two-party system… where people then find themselves so often choosing the lesser evil. Gosh. How many times have I heard that one! I don’t think that’s the case this year. Barack has a wide appeal across the two parties and in the many gaps between/around them.

Sorry to go on and on. The paucity of choice in the two-party system has been much on my mind of late, not because of these particular candidates…but because of the way every issue gets labeled as partisan and then either embraced or dismissed depending… And I really think to have only two parties is a mistake…that we as a people are more various and complex than simple identifications with Dems or Reps allow. But these are largely nascent and inarticulate thoughts. I probably should wait until I have more of a grip on them to speak… but oh well. Also, they make my head hurt.🙂

I DO think most people vote party, and I do think most pundits are more aware of their job security than anything else. I was listening to MPR which features politics over the noon hour. The host had one Dem guy on and one Rep guy on (they are frequent contributers). It is clear that both were analyzing from a perspective of who could win and what is good for each party.

I also hate that one of them (Tom and Todd, not sure which is which) tried to pull out the ‘it doesn’t matter who started the negativity’ routine. Um, yes, it does. As Joe said, if you don’t know the cause, you can’t fix it. False balance in today’s journalism is one reason it’s tanking as a business. Also, the fact that a closer race is better for the media pushes them to focus on things that don’t really matter. It is not in their best interest for either side to pull waaaaaay ahead, so they will do what they can to keep it close.

The truth is not always relative, and both sides don’t always deserve to be heard.

Finally, I find it ironic that one question asked was about how race affected the election or if it did, blah blah blah. Three white guys talking about how race should/shouldn’t does/doesn’t affect the election is not that useful. Granted, I live in MN where our POC population is not that big, but still. They coulda trotted out the token black woman, just for that one question.

Race is important. Race does matter. The New York Times explores this issue in depth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think your assumption is correct, but I think we have different perceptions of what it means. People tend to vote for a party, I think, because the party represents their core beliefs. There are stereotypes for both parties, and then there are the real platform differences that have great meaning for people.
I’m not pretending the electorate is greatly informed, but I don’t think they’re entirely stupid either. I choose to believe people are listening this time around. They’ve listened in the past, thus the term Reagan Democrats. Whether I liked that Democrats voted for him is inconsequential. But without those voters, Reagan wouldn’t have found the great support he did.
I think we’re seeing a lot of traditional Republicans defecting to support Obama. I’m hearing it in the media and I’m surely experiencing it privately. I have relatives and friends who wouldn’t consider voting for Obama a mere 3 months ago who now support him.
I have my own suspicions about the “reverse Bradley effect”. I know a few “closet progressives” who go along to get along at home, but when the curtain is pulled, will vote for Obama. AKM
For those, like me, who don’t have access to video:
Senator Obama exemplifies family values. He honors his parents and his grandparents. He honors the stories of his extended family in Kenya. He has been married to one beautiful wife for sixteen years and he has two beautiful daughters. He honors his wife, works at his marriage, and supports his children. He respects women and works to uphold their rights. He’s worked in communities to better the lives of children, teenagers, and families. He has his own Christian faith, but does not impose that faith on others. He values his own family and honors the families of others. His economic proposals are designed to help and lift up working families. He is working for a better health care system with an emphasis on prevention that is affordable and accessible to all–for families. He understands that families need clean air, clean water, healthy food, and adequate shelter. He leads his family and his country by example, with honesty and compassion.
“I had the opportunity to talk to James Carville and Mary Matalin both of which are very unimpressive when not reading a script.”
My spouse was at a meeting recently re. solving health care issues. Both Carville and Rove were putting in their tuppence worth. In Carville’s case, according to spouse, what was offered wasn’t even worth tuppence–totally without thought or substance. Astonishingly/horrifyingly he found Rove to be quite impressive, so much so I had to check up that he (spouse) still believed there is a special pace in hell for Karl. “Oh yes,” he answered, “but nonetheless he had some worthwhile things to say about health care and was really quite charming.” Charming?
Spouse is a life-long liberal and a discerning, intelligent human being. I wish I could say I demonstrated maturity in the face of this shock to my system, but no. I pathetically resorted to, “but he’s sort of ugly, right?”
The “Real Barack Obama” is a guy comfortable in his own skin and as comfortable in Red as Blue states. That makes him the real American in this presidential campaign. He doesn’t hide from the press. He doesn’t make excuses and cast blame. He’s expanded his campaign into territory that presidents and democrats hasn’t tread in decades. So regardless of the misinformation spewed across the airwaves people are getting the opportunity to meet the man for who he is.
I think this is why Obama’s going to win. You can call him whatever names you want, but in the end he’s a level-headed, thoughtful, intelligent person who people have no problem getting behind to get this country out of a deep mess. And Obama didn’t dress up in camouflage to shoot geese or don a helmet to ride around in a tank to “win” voters. Through it all he has stuck to his strategy and message and his starched shirts and dress pants. He’s come out of every scuffle looking intelligent and rational and believe it or not that’s a breath of fresh air for most people.
I’m going to be going into a major family discussion tomorrow and I need just a tad of prepping. I am hearing a lot now about the negative campaign Obama is running. I’m sure that is a feed from Fox News. My question: Has there been ANY negative campaigning from the Obama camp that you are aware of. I have been laying claim in this debate that the very first big achievement of an Obama presidency is showing that a campaign can be won without resorting to name-calling and threats. Perhaps that alone will help sway the future political process.
Addendum to my post, it should have said brother of Michael Carey (although my mother & I heatedly disagreed about that).
But anyway, about the Repubs/Dems voting along strictly party lines, there is a glimmer of hope in Alaska on that subject. Randy Reudrich (sp?), the one who Bible Spice “busted” for unethical stuff here in AK, was, I believe, head of the Repub party in Alaska. That being the case, there are plenty of Repubs here who were disgusted with her actions in regard to him ($500 worth of copying/faxing on work time for the party???? her sh!t makes that look like child’s play and then some!), and so they have loathed her from day one. Add to that Mc’s pick of her for his VP and the clear pandering to neo-cons & women that that signalled, and you have a lot of disgruntled repubs voting for Obama. Whether or not they’ll admit to it outside of the voting booth is subject to question. I know of 1/2 dozen who have admitted that they will be voting for Obama. So, if that’s a trend, then there is hope. I consider AK to be a pretty strange mix of repubs who are divided on their support for that party pretty evenly (50-50) — some are the fiscal conservatives that the party used to represent, and some are the religious fanatics. There cannot be any repub in this day & age that can look into their heart (or use their brain) and honestly say that the repubs continue to represent fiscal conservatism. However, the neo-cons/religious ones will never be swayed, and so we must write them off and hope that their party is rehabilitated after this election in a way that brings a bit more rational thought to the table. There was an interesting link from someone many threads back, it was to an article by a Catholic leader who said he supports Obama because he has to evaluate the matter from a lot of angles and finds that it is more important to him that the leader of the US not be a war-monger (thereby meaning fewer deaths of adults & children) than anti-abortion. He pointed out something that has been discussed in family over & over, and that is that even though the repubs have been in power for a long time they have made no move to overturn Roe v Wade, and it is unreasonable to ever expect them to.
By the way, my husband & I were both registered Republicans before this election, so I do know a bit about this perspective from personal experience. My husband continues to be registered Repub simply so that he can send a message to the powers that be that he is voting Dem because their party now sucks! I don’t think he’ll ever change his mind about fiscal conservatism & the corporate/business aspects that used to be fundamental to the party, but he is quite aware that the party no longer has a leg to stand on in those areas. Before you drum me out of the house — we did not vote for W a second time!!!! And we didn’t vote for Bible Spice either!
Brian Williams was being interviewed about Nancy Reagan and her broken pelvis. During the interview Williams stated that Nancy is still very active socially and has strong political views but stated that that he wasn’t at liberty to relay them.
I thought that the Reagan family was very noticeable by their absence at the RNC convention. I don’t remember anyone being there even when they were presenting the short clip on Ronald Reagan. Is it possible that Nancy may privately be supporting Obama? She has been noted as spending a lot of time with her son Ron who spoke at the DNC convention in 2004.
Tom from PA: Obama has called McCain erratic. This, to some journalists, is the equivalent of McCain nearly calling Obama a terrorist. Obama has hit on McCain’s policies, but he even stopped his crowd from booing when Obama said McCain’s name. Obama said, “We don’t need that. We just need you to vote.”
I don’t watch ads for the most part, but I can’t recall any that said (in words spoken or printed) that McCain should be questioned for who he is (even though he technically wasn’t born in America) or who he associates with (including Keating, to say the least) or that McCain is a threat to national security.
Bottom line, though, I don’t think it’s gonna matter to the more ardent of McCain supporters.
Who is the Real John McCain
I have to be honest that I never really knew much details about McCain’s military record and took it at face value. The Rolling Stone article may already have been mentioned here, but I recommending reading if you want to know more details about the real “war hero.”
Here’s a quick excerpt comparing his life to Bush’s:
“In its broad strokes, McCain’s life story is oddly similar to that of the current occupant of the White House. John Sidney McCain III and George Walker Bush both represent the third generation of American dynasties. Both were born into positions of privilege against which they rebelled into mediocrity. Both developed an uncanny social intelligence that allowed them to skate by with a minimum of mental exertion. Both struggled with booze and loutish behavior. At each step, with the aid of their fathers’ powerful friends, both failed upward.”
Tom from Pa, here’s some info that might be of help:
“They are fiery watchwords of an increasingly combative and negative presidential campaign debate, the one that rivals John McCain and Barack Obama are bankrolling with their campaign commercials in the most competitive states:
“Dangerous … Not truthful … Hypocrite … Disrespectful … Not ready to lead.” Those are the warnings that McCain and the Republican National Committee have aired about Obama.
“Out of touch … No maverick … Same failed policies … Sleazy ads … John McCain doesn’t get it.” Obama’s campaign has aired those warnings.
As national daily tracking polls portray Obama gaining a growing advantage over McCain—an 11 percentage point lead in the newest polling results Thursday — McCain’s campaign has grown increasingly negative. An independent review by university ad-watchers has found that “nearly 100 percent of the McCain campaign’s advertisements were negative” during the past week, compared with 34 percent of Obama’s.”
source: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-adwarsoct10,0,5145392.story
From my quick Google search, the amount of negative ads vary week by week and state by state. Of course, what is negative and what is truth? When the McCain campaign tries to frighten voters with words like dangerous, I consider that far worse than saying McCain represents the same failed policies.
Chief Hussein Shikago, thanks for the support. I just get frustrated that in the matter of racism, the people it most affects don’t seem to matter (in the world of pundits, I mean). I am also pissed that the one Asian American woman ‘pundit’, if I may loosely use the term, is Michelle Malkin. Really?????
Also, I’ve been feeling a bit neglected during this race that is supposed to be the most exciting of our times because I have to hear how all these different groups’ votes count (white male Democrats, Latinos, blacks, working-class whites, rural whites, disenchanted Hillary supporters, etc.) and not one peep about my groups. In fact, I joked with a friend that the only people to get less love than the Asians were the First Nation’s people.
Finally, I am Taiwanese American and a woman. I can’t separate the two, and I find it interesting that the pundits don’t talk about the considerable cross-section of people who are both of color and women.
No more screeds for the day from me. Sadly, I will not be at home for the debate, so I will miss all the fun, but I pledge again to give ten dollars to Obama every time McCain says ‘my friends’, so someone has to keep track.
Tom from Pa, hope this helps:
“They are fiery watchwords of an increasingly combative and negative presidential campaign debate, the one that rivals John McCain and Barack Obama are bankrolling with their campaign commercials in the most competitive states:
“Dangerous … Not truthful … Hypocrite … Disrespectful … Not ready to lead.” Those are the warnings that McCain and the Republican National Committee have aired about Obama.
“Out of touch … No maverick … Same failed policies … Sleazy ads … John McCain doesn’t get it.” Obama’s campaign has aired those warnings.
As national daily tracking polls portray Obama gaining a growing advantage over McCain—an 11 percentage point lead in the newest polling results Thursday — McCain’s campaign has grown increasingly negative. An independent review by university ad-watchers has found that “nearly 100 percent of the McCain campaign’s advertisements were negative” during the past week, compared with 34 percent of Obama’s.”
source: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-adwarsoct10,0,5145392.story
From my quick Google search, the amount of negative ads varies by state and week. I think it also depends upon the definition of negative. Saying McCain
is going to continue failed policies seems to be accurate. Saying Obama is dangerous is without base and dangerous refers to violence. Word have meaning!
Hope the third time is the charm. Not going to post a link, in case that’s why I’m not going through.
Tom from Pa,
My quick Google search showed that the amount of negative ads depends upon the week and state. However, one must also consider what is negative. Calling Obama dangerous is loaded with meaning. Danger. Warning. Violence.
Saying that McCain is going to continue with Bush’s failed policies can be substantiated. As Joe Biden said, the past is prologue. When you vote with Bush over 90% of the time, it’s a pretty good indicator of how you’re going to lead.
I think erratic is also a loaded word, but I don’t have a problem with it. I can see how McCain supporters find it offensive. Erratic is defined as unpredictable, but it’s associated with people who are unstable. It might have been better to say McCain is inconsistent, which is easily verified. “The fundamentals of our economy are strong.” Clearly, not. So McCain covered it with a BS story about his comment referring to the American worker. Nice try.
I guess negative is in the eye of the beholder. Good luck talking with family. You’ve got plenty of ammo. Others have provided stats. I tried, but I think my links were blocking my posts.
As I understand it, Palin talked to the librarian and asked whether certain books could be taken out of circulation. The librarian said something along the lines of “that’s not gonna happen.” No books were actually removed but the librarian was later fired by Palin. And then there was an uproar from residents and I believe she was reinstated, but left Wasilla eventually.
More on the Wasilla librarian and whether books were banned by Palin (no, they were not, but…). Here is the September 4th story in the Anchorage Daily News, which fits the facts as I have heard them from a friend of the librarian in question.
http://www.adn.com/sarah-palin/story/515512.html
This “book banning” story is a good example of how easily facts are misunderstood, become slightly distorted in the telling, get passed on, and eventually can be dismissed as lies or smear attempts. That is why it is really important that we be very careful that the information we pass on is as clear, factual, and documented as we can possibly manage.
Denise- that statement from Sarah Plain (typo intended) will be thrown back at you by millions. That the report vindicated her because she said so will be believed by millions. I’m ashamed to say that so many American voters don’t often think. If a political party would run Adolf Hitler for President and then try to spin every night on TV that he was a great leader; you would be amazed how many votes he would get. I’d bet that 30% of the voters wouldn’t vote for a candidate not from their party under any circumstances.
Sometime in the near future you should check John Dean’s Conservatives Without Conscience from your library. He describes these people very well. They are essentially people with very low ego strength who need an authority figure in their lives to tell them what to think and what to feel. They also view the world in Black and White. Those are the people who are strong McCain supporters and who still think Bush is a good President. I’m hoping that they are dying off because it looks like the young people today are a little more centered.
WOW Shikago!! I’m very impressed with Chicago now that Mayor Richard M. Daley changed it into a beautiful destination city with its Millennium Park & “greening” of building tops & bottoms. Such a HUGE improvement over the 80’s Chicago. I visited with a friend in 200 & lucky us… we were supremely treated by the Chicago Children’s Choir to a free outside concert at the breathtaking Millennium Park (breathtaking music, too!!), wonderful art exhibit, great food & topped off by an Irish Festival complete with music & dancing. We also treated ourselves to an architectural tour on the canal & out on the lake.
After your fine post of Chicago’s best, people who still think Chicago is full of “corrupt polititians” should visit the city first. Not too long ago I read about they’re relining alleys with tiles over porous concrete that have organisms embedded to “eat” oil & pollutants so water is filtered before it enter the subsoils that feed the lake. BRAVO CHICAGO & hats off to young Mayor Daley!!
