Open Thread – Countdown to Truth Continues!

7 10 2008

While the Presidential debate was in full swing, this came out from the Anchorage Daily News:

With his Troopergate report due Friday, legislative investigator Steve Branchflower appears to have the makings of a fairly complete account, despite weeks of resistance from the Palin family and administration.

Branchflower has, or soon will have, answers from nearly all the people he’d hoped to question regarding Gov. Sarah Palin’s firing in July of former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan.

Some of the final witnesses include seven state employees, including the governor’s chief of staff, who lost a court fight to kill subpoenas Branchflower obtained through the Alaska Senate Judiciary Committee to compel their testimony.

This week the seven are answering a list of questions known as interrogatories. The answers are submitted under oath.

Another key witness, Todd Palin, the governor’s husband, also is answering a list of questions in writing, and has a deadline of Wednesday to turn them in.

A legislative panel has scheduled a meeting for 9 a.m. Friday to receive Branchflower’s report on Monegan’s firing and whether Palin or members of her administration abused their powers in pushing for the dismissal of a state trooper involved in a child-custody fight with the governor’s sister.

It’s getting close, and keeping the pressure/support on the Legislative Council is crucial.  .  Keep those emails and phone calls coming.  Only 3 days left.  We’re in the home stretch.

No one knows what this investigation will turn up, but every American has the right to know.  So Alaskans and non-Alaskans alike, keep the pressure on!  I’m so proud of the participation of the Mudflats community to this effort.  You all know how to roll up your sleeves, and get it done. *snappy salute to all of you*

And, Alaskans for Truth has a website up, so you can send family and friends a link!  To visit, click HERE.

Here’s the next installment of the Top Ten Reasons We Want the Branchflower Report Released:  (from Gryphen at The Immoral Minority)

10: Maybe once the report comes out people will stop naming their pitbulls “Sarah” and making them wear lipstick.  Because that is just all kinds of wrong.

9: It will give Meg Stapleton the opportunity to stop lying about Walt Monegan and Troopergate, and to start lying about why Sarah Palin got her ass handed to her in the debate.

8: If it doesn’t come out then what will Alaska Progressive bloggers write about all weekend?

7: This investigation has cost Alaskans $100,000. The last time Alaskans spent that kind of money with nothing to show for it, was on exotic dancers and cocaine back in the oil drenched 1980s.

6: Because the McCain campaign does not want the report to be made public, and when was the last time ANYBODY told Alaskans not to do something and we listened?

5: Once this report is finally out we can all stop pretending to like Dan Fagan.

4: The report will undoubtedly convince the Palins that they need to return home where surely they will be inspired to add yet another offspring to their brood, perhaps this one to be named “Phlegm Wingnut Palin”?

3: It will allow Alaskans to stop focusing on this distraction and get back to watching for Russians trying to come over the border so that we can shoo them back to where they belong.

…to be continued

As usual, emails and contact phone numbers are in the comments section.

It’s good to see the rest of the world is still at work even when we are caught up in the debates.

Mentioning debates I have put up two “that one” themed signs at

@PJ
Response to your question on the previous thread: Sorry, I slept through it. I got up at 3am for last week’s debate and was so horrible to live with on the following day that I thought I should give this one a miss for the sake of world peace and harmony. The time difference is just about the worst possible for me personally. I checked the BBC reports on the Internet and then came here… I can really only say that the rest of the world wants Obama as POTUS. How, if MCCain is so racist and condescending towards his fellow countrymen, how how how is he going to be able to deal with people of all colours and religions outside of the US borders????

I’m sending positive thoughts all day, every day, believe me!! I’m trying to avoid the discussions that are relevant to US domestic policy as I am what a previous poster called a “Socialist Capitalist” and think a lot of US domestic policy is just plain wrong (healthcare and taxation for starters). BUT I realise that I’m coming at it from a European perspective and am wearing cultural blinkers, big ones!

@ flag
well, I may not have all the answers…but I agree we do have problems and many of our policies are not working well.
Setting effective policies in a new global environment may take us a few tries; but as long as we get started making positive changes I think I can live with a mistake or two. God knows we’ve been making some monumental mistakes over the last 2 decades. But we do get things right once in awhile…we’ve just been on a dry spell🙂

knikgoose HUSSEIN!!

Truth is, even though I prepared, made a fresh pot of coffee, downed a three musketeers, etc., I FELL ASLEEP right after McCrabby started blathering on the BS about Freddie Mac donations to Obama. I woke up once as McCain did his little pointing at “That one”, and then snored through the rest.
What I DO recall is, once McCain went off on the Freddie Mac train, Obama had a huge grin on his face, like “Oh, here we go, again, this silly old man’s got nuthin’….” and for some reason this feeling of ‘nothing-bad-can-happen-cuz-obama’s-on-it’ came over me and I closed my eyes.
I think I’m more focused on what will come out of Troopergate than worrying about whether Obama can hold his own with Grampa.
Therefore, I am (OMG, you don’t even know how) overjoyed I was to find that AKM had done the play by play,….
Thank you once again, AKM for being on top of it all!

I am creeped out though by the evil and violent behavior instigated by Palin, first in Florida, where someone yelled “Kill him!”, and McCain earlier Tuesday, where Obama was called a terrorist and no one corrected them. This is inciting unlawful acts and I thought was a felony in most states.
And it scares me because McCain and the RNC have a lot to lose if/when Obama wins, so, I really hope that the authorities are taking threats like that seriously, and have cautioned the pitbull and her trainer against further instigation, – lest they be held accountable.

McCain’s use of “that one” is interesting – since he didn’t want to use Obama’s name and probably didn’t want to say “that man”, because “that man in the White House” was a common Republican term for Franklin Roosevelt. The comparison of Obama to FDR and McCain to Hoover would be too close to home – after his reference to Hoover in regard to taxes and protectionism. I think he must have “Hoover on my mind” running through his head and knows he just isn’t going to make it.

Having moved up the deadline (the original deadline came too close to the election) and having tried every delaying tactic in the book, the McPalin crew will undoubtedly complain that this is a rush to judgment!

Why not delay it a week – they asked for it!

They did complain about exactly that. Meg Stapleton said something like “you wouldn’t rush a murder investigation!” (eye roll) AKM

Cindy “McCain, who stopped to visit a half-dozen children at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt today, said the presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama has “waged the dirtiest campaign in American history,” and her husband Sen. John McCain will use tonight’s debate to correct the distortions.”

I am worried that this story will get buried in all the stuff on the economy. Now if the story is that Palin did do what she is alleged to have done in regards to the firing of her ex-brother-in-law, then it may get a bit more play.

The blogs tend to push the stories thru their own tenacity into the main stream media (MSM). I have found it takes a few days to hit the MSM news cycle…but it gets there.

I really wonder how Wooten feels at this point…..hope someone interviews him.

I read an article yesterday where the IRS is now looking into the per diem that Palin was not taxed on…something amounting to $17K. Also the state of Alaska is supposedly looking into this. Should the per diem monies been consideered income and taxed. Palin feels as governor she works every day 365 days per year because she has to be available…. I don’t know, I’m not a governor. I do believe she lives in her own reality and deserves payment.

“The Secret Service is following up on media reports today that someone in the crowd at a McCain/Palin event suggested killing Barack Obama, according to Secret Service spokesman Malcolm Wiley. The shout of “kill him” followed a Sarah Palin rant on Obama’s relationship with radical Chicagoan Bill Ayers. “

I mentioned Erich Fromm’s definition of necrophilia in a post a few days back. He adopted the term after reading a speech by one of Franco’s (the Spanish Fascist) generals proclaiming a love of death as he threatened and shouted down political opponents. This love of death and militarism that permeates the McCain campaign unfortunately is beginning to sound similar. Hopefully they will wake up to that realization.

It would be so much better if the 7 + 1 were put under oath at a deposition and forced to provide full and complete answers right then and there.

Interrogatories leave too much squiggle room in terms of not responding due to objections of “overly broad” or “ambiguous” or “burdensome” which can only be resolved by some type of motion to compel to a full legislature which will not reconvene until after the New Year.

Wasn’t Lyda Green going to reconvene the legislature this month? What happened with that? Did too many legislators tell her they would not appear for any special session, especially if it was to deal with the various Palin matters?

Willy Nelson and Wesley Snipes have both discovered that the reality in which the IRS lives greatly out-trumps their own reality when it comes to taxes.

Per diems are not payed out, and should not be payed out, when no expenses are incurred. If Palin did not travel to Juneau, then she incurred no expenses for which per diems are appropriate. In simple IRS language, that’s taxable income. Palin might believe “in her own reality” that her reality is one up on the IRS, but she’ll soon find out that while she may be a 140 lb hussy in heals, the IRS is a 8-ton gorilla with bad gas looking for relief.

As for Palin working hard, let’s just put it in language any Mainah can understand: Palin wohks hahd at hahdly wohkin.

I checked and low and behold I had been purged even though I have voted in every election since I was 18 and am now on the down hill side of 40. I have duly changed my address every time I moved and there were no irregularities in my name. Apparently my offense is having the same name as someone else who once live in another city in Washington and now lives in Idaho. Although we do not share a scoial security number they decided to err on the side of caution and purge me then not let me know. I am now fully restored but others may not be. One of my aunts also purged is 89 and no longer has a drivers liscense had to go to DMV to get a State ID card even though she has lived in the same location for 65 years and has voted in every election since she was 21. I strongly advise each of you to check your voter registration! This is especially important if you live in a battleground state.

While I convinced that independents who came will be voting for Obama, I can’t be convinced that all of the Republicans will.

I am however, very pleased to report that for the Republicans there is not the blind party devotion (Thanks GWB and crew!) that would have been there in the past.

This was a very thoughful bunch of people whose political ideology is being turned upside down this year. They noticed everything, every nuance.

Comments ran the gammut from:

‘McCain wants to buy up all the bad paper? Wasn’t that part of the bail out?’

‘Obama sure looks/sounds/seems presidential. ‘

‘Meg Whitman? An eBay style treasury department? Has he looked at eBay lately as a user or shareholder?’

‘Why doesn’t anyone ask about Ayres?’

‘OMG, He didn’t just call Senator Obama ‘THAT ONE’ did he?’

‘McCain sounds like Obama… (I filled my mouth with chili to keep from responding to that one)’

‘What’d Brokaw do to piss him off?’

‘ I like Obama’s healthcare plan.’

‘ At least one of them knows the meaning of prioritize.’

‘John McCain doesn’t make me care, Obama does.’

and my favorite:

‘ Holy cow, how hard did McCain snap that pen top on there? Did you hear that? Look at that notepad… he’s filling it up, is he journaling? What’s he writing anyways? What I’d give to get a look at that!’

Wooten has been very quiet because I am sure he is going to sue the state of Alaska. He may even have a civil/personal lawsuit against the Palins that is a strong case.

I feel Monegan will also try to sue. His case will be a little harder to prove, but it could be settled out of court in order to save face/time/etc.

Troopergate’s report will be a huge piece of any possible trial. Troopergate is going to most likely cost the state of Alaska MILLIONS of dollars. It will hopefully bring Sarah Palin to her knees and she is recalled as Governor and taken off the VP ticket or loses the election because of it. She deserves it. McCain deserves it.

Either way, unfortunately, there was INJUSTICE and Palin and Alaska have a lot of cleaning up to do…..Palin’s entire family have been judged by many, including myself, and they are not good Christians or people. SHAME SHAME SHAME!!

My gosh, Debbie Commando – that is horrible. Thank goodness you checked on your registration and got it straightened out. I can imagine the near riots there are going to be as very determined 80 years olds are denied the right to vote on election day. And all those people who might have foreclosure starting but are still in their homes (you know – those mortgages MCain is going to buy up) They better have extra security everywhere at the polls. This is truly tragic.

8 10 2008
Democrat G (formerly "G")

Who was McCain talking about when he said that houses that were bought for $800,000 and are now worth $500,000? OH, the rich! As Obama said, he never talked about the middle class.

I have a modest amount of wealth (which has shrunk by 25% over the past 3 days – and it is not so modest anymore) and have a co-op valued at about $600k fully paid for. I also have worked 4 months out of the 2008 year and pay for my own health insurance and everything else (like most Americans these days).

So, I kind of fall into McCain’s demographic, but not really. But, since I do not have a mortgage, should my hard work to pay cash for my apartment be punished!?!?!? Call me a republinazi, but I think that is wrong! I watched my Ps and Qs since I received my first wages! That is how I fulfilled my dreams! I do not buy what you cannot afford. I buy almost EVERYTHING I eat on sale or at a price that I think is a deal (trust me – I am CHEAP – that is the point – BECAUSE I do NOT live ABOVE MY MEANS!!!) But, the REAL point I am trying to make is: WHO WAS MCCAIN TALKING ABOUT!?!?! YES, people who own houses for that amount need help. NO question. BUT, a SMALL majority of them! BUT, the PEOPLE who need help do NOT have houses that are valued ANYWHERE NEAR that amount! Average Joe Six Pack (it is embedded in my brain) owns a house between $100,000 and $200,000.

How stupid are people who fall for this crap. Oh wait, maybe now I know why my friends who make hundred of thousands of dollars or millions of dollars a year say that they want McCain as President ONLY BECAUSE HE WILL CUT TAXES FOR THEM! They do NOT like him, they do not agree with him on anything, but they will vote for him. PATHETIC!

And, for those people I know who said “Well, good thing I can afford to send my kids to Europe if anything happens here in America…” when I said “oh, so you want to break up your family for who knows how long and spend money so you can kids can run which will be higher than the tax increase probably” guess what they had to say! NOTHING!! MORONS!!

Thanks for letting me rant. Got 3.5 hours of sleep last night (celebrating good things and pondering lots of other things) and do not understand a lot anymore. People are sad. Thankfully there are people I can relate to on here!

Here from Daily Kos is more info about the McCain Mortgage Plan – which he would implement AFTER the election – AFTER his Repug operatives attempt to deny these folks their opportunity to vote!

John McCain will direct his Treasury Secretary to implement an American Homeownership Resurgence Plan (McCain Resurgence Plan) to keep families in their homes, avoid foreclosures, save failing neighborhoods, stabilize the housing market and attack the roots of our financial crisis.

She is pretty smart my old mom.

As we wait for the Alaska Supreme Court to decide whether or not the report can be released, I think it would be interesting to discuss the various outcomes the report could lead to. 1.) If the Branchflower report suggests wrongdoing (is this a criminal or civil investigation, btw. I suspect it’s criminal, but am not sure) does the Alaska Legislature try the case like what can happen in the federal gov with impeachment, or do they refer to another judicial body, or is this report the sum total of the investigation and Branchflower’s findings and recommendations are binding? 2.) What sort of penalties are we talking about? 3.) What happens if Branchflower’s report shows that there is no “there” there or indicates it was simply a petty abuse of power not worth prosecuting? Is that the end of Troopergate?

One thing I’m still waiting for is for someone with authority up there to take the McCain people and Palin’s cronies to task for smearing Branchflower and others who have been put in a miserable position just trying to do their jobs. It would do my heart good if one of the Alaska “supremes” would address this ugliness in their ruling, but I doubt they can do that.

It looks like this thread is doing its job. After last night’s debate it looks like McCain/Palin are toast. We can’t let our guard down; we must keep pecking away at the McCain/Palin voters that are not hard core pro McCain/Palin. It’s not too early to start thinking about the future. Mudflats has found a niche and I’m suggesting a slight change after the election. We need a voice nationally for the people. Mudflats is honest and has a loyal following around the world. Let’s build on that reputation and following. Let’s elevate Mudflats to be that voice for the people. I have seen how politicians somehow forget who they serve. Mudflats could be that vehicle to give an erring politician a good kick in the shins. I’m talking about a tremendous amount of work but after seeing how this site is put together and run I know that you can do it. To make a success of my proposal you would need help in every state and precinct. I suggest starting to build your base now and ask for help (and donations.) Please don’t let this great site die!

I think that the “American Homeownership Resurgence Plan” (AHRP) is something cooked up by the McCain family’s accounting firm.

Wanting to avoid another blunder (John didn’t know how many houses he had, never mind how many johns in the houses), they’ve transferred all of the residences into one holding company, AHRP, and they’re now training John in how to string together and pronounce “AHRP” and “my friends” in one sentence.

The story is all over Progressive Talk Radio today about the MCain campaign sending absentee ballot applications to registered democrats or people that have donated to Obama’s camapign.

These ballots are deliberately misleading and have postage paid return addresses that are for an election clerk that is outside of your city or town. What this will end up doing is either having your vote not counted, or if you return one of these, they will cite you for election fraud, saying that you already voted absentee.Th ese ballots are only being sent out in ‘purple states’ and this is a big deal.. This is called voter caging, and is a huge problem.

I’m almost like you, with no debt except a mortgage and plenty of cash in the bank to pay off my mortgage should I need to. I’m a saver, all the way. The McCain Resurgence Plan is way worse than the Community Reinvestment Act the Republicans are wrongly trying to blame for the mess we’re in. It asks taxpayers to refinance some people’s mortages at a current home’s value at fixed rates. I took out a 20 year fixed rate mortgage when rates were at historic lows and put 30% down. I still have been hurt by the reduced asset valuation of my home, almost wiping out that 30% down. What did I do to deserve this? I’m not against helping struggling homeowners who were hoodwinked by sleazy mortgage brokers (and they tried to bait and switch me, but hard). But in effect, his plan punishes me more than the bailout does.

in particular there is a link to a letter from former US Attorney Wevley William Shea to Governor Palin that states, in part, “Unfortunately, in my opinion, you have had very naive unprofessional counsel on the Department of Public Safety and the Department of Law,” and lists for palin the steps that shea recommends — such as cutting out the crap, admitting she did the wrong thing and that both sarah and todd should publicly apologize.

Afternoon Funnies:

Captured from a fivethirtyeight blogger:

EmonOkari said…
I believe a knockdown (though not a ‘knockout’), was when Obama pushed to respond to McCain on a question that was not part of the agreed-to rules. Obama got Brokaw to relent, and began laying out some solid talking points to the crowd. Then he quickly moved into the ‘Green Behind The Ears’ moment about ‘risk’, stating McCain may want you to believe he’s somber and steady….

This is where McCain walked RIGHT into a complete sucker-punch. He interrupted Obama with a giggling ‘Thank you, thank you very much,’ which in itself fell flat. This was immediately followed by a snicker, shoulder bounce, and a proud glance around the room. However, Obama stayed right in stride and unleashed a gut-wrenching flurry of ‘Bomb Bomb Iran’, ‘Obliterate North Korea’, ‘Next Stop: Baghdad’.

The smug smile instantly fell off McCain’s face…replaced by a sickened look of ‘Oh sh*t!’ He stopped in his forward tracks, took every blow from Obama’s assault, slowly backed up, and gave a look of complete defeat. They didn’t even need a split-screen, for the camera-man did a perfect job of showing Obama’s attack and McCain’s reaction all in one shot.

I think that moment was one where McCain realized he just screwed up big time. And one I won’t soon forget.

for anyone who believes that brokaw and mccain (and many republicans) are correct that social security is “broken” or “in trouble,” read this and go to the link pointed to by dean baker:

If Social Security Was a Private Corporation Then it Would Sue Tom Brokaw for Every Penny He Has

If a news reporter deliberately makes a false statement claiming that a private company like Boeing or Microsoft is going broke, the company has the right to sue the reporter and the news agency. That is why reporters rarely make statements like Microsoft or Boeing (or Lehman Brothers, AIG, or Goldman Sachs) are going broke.

However, reporters can freely impugn the financial health of a government program like Social Security because a government program cannot sue for libel. That is why Brokaw knew that he could imply that Social Security is going broke, even though it is not true. Social Security cannot sue Brokaw even if he deliberately tells explicit lies about its financial health.

Those who are interesting in learning about the true state of Social Security’s financial health can find out by looking at the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office’s website [http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/96xx/doc9649/08-20-SocialSecurityUpdate.pdf].

“If You Want To Win An Election, Just Control The Voting Machines”
by Thom Hartmann

Maybe Nebraska Republican Chuck Hagel honestly won two US Senate elections. Maybe it’s true that the citizens of Georgia simply decided that incumbent Democratic Senator Max Cleland, a wildly popular war veteran who lost three limbs in Vietnam, was, as his successful Republican challenger suggested in his campaign ads, too unpatriotic to remain in the Senate. Maybe George W. Bush, Alabama’s new Republican governor Bob Riley, and a small but congressionally decisive handful of other long-shot Republican candidates really did win those states where conventional wisdom and straw polls showed them losing in the last few election cycles.

Perhaps, after a half-century of fine-tuning exit polling to such a science that it’s now sometimes used to verify how clean elections are in Third World countries, it really did suddenly become inaccurate in the United States in the past six years and just won’t work here anymore. Perhaps it’s just a coincidence that the sudden rise of inaccurate exit polls happened around the same time corporate-programmed, computer-controlled, modem-capable voting machines began recording and tabulating ballots.

But if any of this is true, there’s not much of a paper trail from the voters’ hand to prove it…

Over 60% said McCain attacked too much, just 17% said Obama did.

The internals from the CBS poll are also horrible for McCain. On the question of who understands the problems of average Americans, 80% said Obama, just 44% said McCain.

It’s simply, WOW!

As the Jed Report notes, McCain voted in 1993 and 1994 against making “bombings, arson and blockades at abortion clinics, and shootings and threats of violence against doctors and nurses who perform abortions” federal crimes.

– Opposing Colorado’s “Bubble Law.” McCain said he opposed Colorado’s “Bubble Law,” which prohibited abortion protesters from getting within 8 feet of women entering clinics [Denver Post, 2/27/00]. The law was later upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

– Voting to allow those fined for violence at clinics to avoid penalties by declaring bankruptcy. NARAL Pro-Chioce America notes that McCain “voted to allow perpetrators of violence or harassment at reproductive-health clinics to avoid paying the fines assessed against them for their illegal acts by declaring bankruptcy.”

LATEST UPDATE – MCCAIN’S NEW PLAN!

McCain offers new mortgage plan
Posted: 01:07 PM ET
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Under a revised mortgage rescue plan announced at the debate Tuesday night by Sen. John McCain, much of the burden of paying to keep troubled borrowers in their homes would shift to taxpayers by making it part of the bailout plan already approved by Congress.

McCain’s original plan called for lenders to write down the value of these mortgages, and take those losses. McCain unveiled the new $300 billion plan in response to the first question of the debate.

He said, “I would order the Secretary of Treasury to immediately buy up the bad home loan mortgages in America and renegotiate at the … diminished values of those homes, and let people … be able to make those payments and stay in their homes.”

McCain economic advisor Doug Holtz-Eakin said that instead of the lenders taking the loss on the mortgages, federal funding already provided by the $700 billion bailout bill approved last week would pay for it.

THIS IS COMPLETELY UNAMERICAN! I AM SORRY! YES, HELP PEOPLE OUT, BUT THIS WOULD DESTROY THE VALUES OF HOMES ACROSS AMERICA! SO, ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO PAID OFF THEIR MORTGAGES AND CAN AFFORD THEIR MORTGAGES, RISK PEOPLE PURPOSELY NOT BEING ABLE TO AFFORD THEIR MORTGAGE TO SAVE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS. THIS IS A SCAM! IF YOUR HOUSE COSTS $100,000 IT DID NOT PLUMMET TO $20,000. BUT IF YOUR HOUSE COST $12 MILLION DOLLARS AND IT IS NOW WORTH $8 MILLION – YOU LOSE $4 MILLION DOLLARS! THIS IS A PLAN TO GET THE RICH RICHER AND HELP THE RICH. DO NOT LET PEOPLE FALL FOR THIS. THIS IS A SCAM IN MY OPINION!!!

“It was never a concern by any of us in the Chicago school reform movement that he had led a fugitive life years earlier,” said former Illinois state Republican Rep. I have been up in arms after the Palin rally in Florida. Calling Obama a terriost.. Also the Sheriff (dressed in his uniform) who I feel incited violence. The people in the audience yelling—“kill him”.
Last night I decided to write Mr Sherrif a note. I told him It was bad enough to have a woman sprew venom from her mouth, but to have a uniformed Sheriff incite violence was un-forgiving.
I said it was UN_AMERICAN!!! I told him that he owed the American People an apology. Also reminded him that our country is in a economic crisis—-I have lived thru a depression and know what it is like. We have a right to choose who to vote for in this election and hoped I don’t meet him in the soup line.

I think Palin’s response to anything besides actual impeachment or jail time will be “So what?” And I don’t see any major consequences arising out of the findings.

McCain’s original plan called for lenders to write down the value of these mortgages, and take those losses. McCain unveiled the new $300 billion plan in response to the first question of the debate.

Ok, let me get this straight. McCain was against giving bankruptcy courts the ability to renegotiate mortgages for the person in foreclosure, and now he wants our tax dollars to buy the bad mortgages. What gives. Oh…I figured it out. The solution he opposes would still leave the mortgage in the hands of the company that wrote the mortgage whereas his plan would take the responsibility for the mortgage out of the hands of the company who made the loan and shifts it to the taxpayer. Robbing peter to pay paul, the Republican way. He would probably use our tax dollars to pay off the entire mortgage and then devalue the property and write the new loan on the devalued amount. What a deal for the people who wrote the bad loan in the first place.

What I don’t understand is why didn’t Congress just write a law that freezes the mortgage rates for all the people in foreclosure at the current going rate for mortgages. That way the homeowner can probably keep their house and the mortgage company gets paid again. The problem is that the mortgage companies upped the interest to a ridiculous amount (sometimes as high as 18%) when the original terms expired. That’s what is throwing so many homeowners into foreclosure. If their interest rate had been frozen at, say 6.5%, most would be able to pay their mortgages.

Lacy Lady,

I was rather upset about the Clearwater rally also. Here is what I sent to our governor Charlie Crist:

Governor Crist,

Was the rally you attended this week in Clearwater a Republican rally or a KKK rally? To this observer, the only things missing were the white hoods, the burning crosses and maybe a negro or two to lynch.

I was physically sickened by the racist tone of this rally. It is clear to me that the republican candidates for the highest office in this country are attempting to incite their followers to violence. The rhetoric from the republican candidate for vice president was something I would expect to hear from the Nazi Germany era. Her racist hate speech is not what we should hear in Florida in 2008.

Do the Republicans have nothing to offer on the major issues of this election cycle?

Racism disgusts me,

I have not heard back – “due to the volume, blah blah, it may be several days before we get back to ya”

So McCain will order the Treasury Dept. to buy up the mortgages that are failing. Once again I find out that I was taught wrong in school! I was taught that all financial issues had to originate in the House of Representatives. Apparently my teachers were wrong. And here I thought that the President couldn’t initiate spending programs on his own; the authorization for spending had to come from the House. It seems the older I get the dumber I get.

I think you are correct that one of the primary issues in troopergate itself is the obfuscation, vs what they may actually find (i.e. the investigation into abuse of power). That said, the other side of that coin is, why all the obfuscation if there truly is nothing to obfuscate? We will have to wait for Branchflower’s report on that one.

At this point, I think many folks correctly are thinking the whole troopergate mess will bring to light very legitimate and damning issues regarding Palin pressuring the workers comp contractor to deny her brother-in-laws w/c claim (which sounds like it may have been accepted–anyone have better info on this?). If she did delve into Wooten’s personnel file and if she did pressure the w/c contractor, then she will be in some legal hot water.

I hope this helps.

8 10 2008
knikgoose HUSSEIN!!

One of the further ramifications of Palin being found instrumental in Troopergate, is that there are other instances wherein Palin has behaved likewise, (ie. Bitney) where he was suddenly fired due to his having an affair with a woman in her admin (Richter) and the affair having been brought to her attention by the husband (Scott Richter) while this couple (The Richters) are also co-owners of property at Big Lake and Safari Lake with the Palin’s. (Did I lose you?)

Oddly enough, the ex Ms. Richter is now the director of the PDF ,which is the fund that issues all those entitlement checks to Alaskans.
Scott Richter attempted to have the divorce filings sealed but it was denied.
It has been speculated that Sarah Palin had an affair with Richter, but that’s Nat’l Enquirer talk, and it would require access to the divorce papers to see if Palin had been implicated.

In the meantime, Bitney lost his job but the ex Mz. Richter got the promotion,…..that’s Palin justice.

So, the decision in Troopergate could launch a whole new can of worms into the fray. (In addition to CC’ing Todd on state business, screwing up taxes, charging per diems, etc. )

The GOP has to stop. I’m running out of space for my name!

Actually, the part about buying bad mortgages is already in the bailout, and it was suggested by Obama. I don’t know about the selling it back to the people part, though. One of Obama’s advisors talked about it on Keith’s show last night.

My best friend (who works with at risk youth) and I were talking about this. There is the section of America who is truly poor and almost-poor that need help in these times. They should get it.

However, for the people who bought five-hundred thousand dollar houses when they could only afford two-hundred thousand dollar houses, that’s another matter. My friend was told she qualified for loans for twice the amount of the house she knew she could afford. She said no. Now, she is not in any danger of losing her house, but she is not flush by any means.

The hard truth is that people will have to do without. Again, the truly poor need help, but those who pay a hundred bucks a month for cable can start looking at where they can trim the fat. It is not a right to have everything you want in life–that is not guaranteed by any law.

It is not patriotic to spend while we’re in the middle of a recession, even if it’s touted as good for the economy. In Taiwan, they save twenty-five percent of their wages (and yes, they have socialized healthcare as well). It can be done.

I think the situation with Palin’s email account is a little different because she set it up purposely to avoid public scrutiny of certain business activities via the FOIA, like her state-related emails on her Alaska website account would have.

If she would have kept them all on the government account there likely would not have been this problem because it would have been more difficult to hack and the idle curious (such as what appears to be the hacker in this case) would not have been tempted to hack a government website.

So, using the 50,000 nuclear weapons idea, it would have been if she wanted to use some of the nuclear weapons for purposes she did not want the public to know about so, instead of keeping them in the secure storage facility, she put them in her garage. An idle, curious passerby sees the garage glowing and wiggles the poorly locked garage door, peaked in, and then posted pictures of what he saw on the internet.

It’s not just that she is dishonest…she’s also stupid, and those are two very dangerous traits when you add in “power hungry.”

katiebegood (10:23:14) :

I’m not gonna say that there are NO mortgages where the recast rate was 18%, but that would certainly be an hugely predatory (and possibly illegal) home loan. The vast majority of folks who are in trouble because they got an ARM are, right now, paying the “going rate” for mortgage interest — which is, in historical terms, pretty low. The problem is that they initially were able to make a much smaller payment than that based on the “going rate”, and in many cases were able to qualify for the loan based on that “teaser” rate and/or payment.

Lots of people were talked into loans they had no real ability to repay; lots of people were lied to; some people went into it knowing full well they were taking a huge risk; many didn’t. And, there was a lot of fraud, both outright and of the “I see nothing, I hear nothing” variety.

But the bottom line is that most of the “troubled” mortgage loans are just too large for the borrowers’ income at current interest rates (e.g., 6.5%). The only way to keep people in their homes in most of these cases is, in one way or another, to give them quite a bit of money, either by writing down (that is, somebody else pays down) the principal balance, or by setting the interest rate at an artifically low value (again, somebody has to pay for this).

Logically, the only “somebody” who will be willing, or even able, to shell out this money is the government (that is, the rest of us). The banks should be expected to eat some of the writedown — on the basis that it will be cheaper for them to absorb that loss, compared to having to foreclose and then try to dispose of the physical houses in a crap market, but eventually it’s gonna be the taxpayers who pick up the tab.

We need to do this, but we need to do it carefully.

BTW, asianHusseingrrl”that one”MN : Out here in Cali, “the people who bought five-hundred thousand dollar houses when they could only afford two-hundred thousand dollar houses” ARE the poor and almost-poor.

Eventually, we’re going to have to have some kind of government (taxpayer) funded writedown of loan principals. As always, it’s the details that will matter.

To me, it will be important that the degree of relief be inversely related to the size of the loan, as normalized to the local market (backed up to the date of the loan). If the median home price was $150,000 when you got your $400,000 loan, I’m thinking you knew what you were doing, and you should only get a little help. Out here in Santa Clara county, somebody with a $400,000 loan probably deserves a lot of help. I don’t believe there is any market where a $4,000,000 borrower would deserve help.

Second thing is, even for the deserving borrowers, the govt (you and I) should get some degree of equity participation, just like we should when Hank Paulson buys toxic paper. The idea is to let people keep their homes, not to bankroll their homes as an investment.

That was exactly my question earlier. What exactly will it mean if the report is a.) damaging or b.) not that big a deal? It’s the legislature investigating, not the prosecutor’s office. Do they get to decide whether or not to pursue criminal charges or will the report be acted on by the DA’s office if there is evidence of a crime?

In all honesty, it sounds like Wooten was a bad actor and I can understand a certain amount of desire on the part of the Palin’s to get him off the street (if what they allege is true, and it sounds like there is some backup for their accusations against him). What is astounding is the absolute lack of common sense Palin displayed in going about this. The divorce documents from her sister’s divorce are instructive. The Palin’s and Sarah’s father were actively trying to get someone to discipline Wooten, and the judge ruling on the divorce issues told Palin’s sister to “get her family in line,” and suggested that, because of the undue influence of the Palin’s and Heath’s (Sarah’s family name), he would not hesitate to remove the child from the Matt-Su Valley area. It sounds like the Palin’s/Heath’s ruled the roost in that area and Sarah simply didn’t believe anyone could or would cross her.

@strangelet, yes, this is true. Once again, I was speaking from the MN point of view. I would adjust that number proportionally to the going rate in the different states. The point I was trying to make is that there were many people who were not poor that took these loans out of greed or thought that the market would never crash. We are a country steeped in debt, and we are exhorted to buy buy buy all the time. There is an aspect of personal responsibility to this, not just right or wrong.

In the end, we all need to step up to make sure it doesn’t happen again, but I can see how people who were prudent and took out a reasonable loan and always made payments might be just a wee bit pissed off that they are being penalized for being diligent.

This 50+ white male will most definitely be voting for Obama. However, I have to admit that there are far too many whites in this country that will still not vote for Obama because of his skin. How many of those we actually have is the $54,000 question. Many who understand it’s wrong to be racist will tell you they are voting against him because of other reasons and won’t admit (to you or to themselves) the real reason.

I personally think much of the venom directed toward the supposed Muslim, terrorist, foreign-born hate attacks is basically racial in nature. People who say he is too inexperienced are many of the same people who voted for good-ole-boy GW Bush and weren’t worried about HIS lack of foreign policy experience.

I can say that his race is interesting to me on an historical basis, but it’s the worst reason to vote for or against him. I guess I’m just hung up on traits like intelligence, judgment, thoughtfullness, compassion and the fact that he appears to be a once-in-a-lifetime inspirational leader. But that’s just me.

Any count of “My friends”???

_________________________________________________________

Sorry if I am off thread here – just catching up from last night.

I did keep a tally during the debate and counted 20 “my friends”, but I easily could have missed some. When you repeat anything that many times, it loses its sincerity (assuming there was any there in the first place)
McCain was jittery, breathy, condescending, and just outright mean.
Obama in contrast was calm and very presidential.

I didn’t notice anyone trying to have their picture taken with McCain after the debate, but lots of pictures with Obama and Michelle.
Here’s a theory —Maybe McCain has some prostrate issues that make it uncomfortable for him to sit still during a long debate, which would also explain why he had to leave so quickly when the debate was over. Where are those medical records by the way?

Ah, but the real justice is that Mr. Bitney and (the former) Ms. Richter got married a few weeks ago, and Mr. Bitney is working for the Speaker of the AK House, in spite of Todd trying to get Rep. Harris to fire him! SWWNBN actually appointed Ms. Richter to be the Director of the PFD when she first go in to office, so it’s not a new job for her.

@ Scotsgirl (11:21:29) :
The thing that should keep people from lying is that they are asked questions under oath. Apart from the fact that at least some of these people are probably “god fearing” bible nuts and worry that god will smite them or take away their television reception, people still tend to take oaths seriously, at least in my experience. Even us non-believers tend to have a moral code that says: Don’t lie if you are promising not to.
Second, practically speaking, there are a lot of people being asked a lot of the same or similar questions. If there are inconsistencies/ conflicts between the details in the various stories, then there is good chance that Mr. Branchflower will make findings as to the credibility of the various witnesses. Even if there aren’t inconsistencies in the stories, there’s a paper trail on this one that could trip people up. No one wants to be the one who was called out as a liar/ exaggerator/ bullshit artist.
There may also be the possibility of perjury charges for those who are demonstrable liars, although I’m not sure if those would apply to legislative subpoenas under Alaskan law.

My Friends x 22.

McCain looked like he died a week ago. He was pale, pasty, and his face looked bloated, more than normal.

The My Fellow Prisoners was true CLASSIC. He was having one of his flashbacks to Nam. He’s senile and he’s not ready to be President, unless it’s president of the hospice he gets stuck in.

Why does bloody PBS, of all places, keep running these stupid on-line polls? About anything?

That poll, I’m pretty sure has been up for a while and PBS at some point early last week said, look it’s not a scientific poll (because when the first put it up you could vote multiple times), and they won’t be reporting based on any numbers they get from it.

Apparently, the changed the poll so that people could only vote once, but we quickly discovered that if you just clear your cache and cookies you can vote as often as you like.

Bottom line: I wouldn’t encourage people to waste their time either forwarding e-mails on this OR voting. Much better to waste your time HERE!

Anyone in AK hear what happened with the hearing with the McFailin attack dogs and the Supremes? Hoping they don’t kill her investigation.

IS it just me, or when McCain smiles, he just looks plain creepy?

Pedophile in waiting creepy. If he was unknown and sat on a park bench near a playground, people would take their children and leave.. Quickly.

He has that look that says ‘deranged’..

NPR just ran a lame report on Troopergate. Martin Kaste’s soft inquiry ignored the hard points like subpoenas. Instead, Kaste seemed to approach the whole issue from the “truth squad’s” point of view, ending with this:

But whatever the report says on Friday, the McCain campaign has managed to cast doubt on its fairness. At the same time, McCain’s Truth Squad has become more aware of Alaskan sensibilities and has stepped back to leave the legal wrangling to local Republicans.

As for O’Callahan, the New York lawyer recently made a concession to the local fashion sense — by buying himself a fleece.

I think The McCPalin campaign would rather have the distraction of troopergate than people focusing on the economy or Florida focusing on the anti-semitic Joe Vogler’s Alaska Independence Party, of which BOTH Palins were enthusiastic members.

This is kind of a late reply on this thread, butt…

I completely agree with you that there were lots of borrowers who knowingly participated in gaming the system on mortgages, and some of them just did it too late and got caught when prices stopped rising. Those folks do not deserve help from the taxpayers. Whatever system we put in place for relief has got to have provisions for sorting out the opportunists from the victims. I think you and I are in violent agreement that one indicator of this is the size of the loan compared to the local price of housing.

Cheers.

Can she be impeached?

Recalled?

End the End Times

Marty Hussein Wolf Lover…, yeah, this lady says it a lot like we’ve all been thinking. I think she misses the thirst for power. She misses the most scary parts about Godzella. This is why it is the duty of Alaskans to put country first.

Frankly, I don’t see Steven’s outcome as being quite as urgent as what happens with the “Governor”. The wreck of her short reign has yet to be evaluated, yet she could end up POTUS. Yikes! Prayers needed–whatever one does, meditation, good thoughts…send our love to B.H.O. !

Again, is it true she went to the head of Veco in 2001 for money? Where are the news hounds?

If she wins, we could all be “fellow prisoners”..where would it end? Talk about homeland insecurity. Got to run, hope all truth seekers stay brave.
Love to everyone with Hussein names or vibes–rhymes with the truth shall reign!
