The Truth About Palin and Darfur.

6 10 2008

Sarah Palin talked big with claims of her administration’s leadership role in an attempt to divest Alaska holdings from Darfur. Sound too good to be true? Guess why. Here’s the real story from (D) Rep. Les Gara, who filed legislation cosponsored by (R) Rep. Bob Lynn to require Alaska to divest from companies supporting the genocide in Darfur.

Les didn’t even get to hear the last half hour of the VP debate, because as soon as Palin dropped her little bomb about Darfur and how she “called for” divestment as soon as she found out about it, his phone started ringing off the hook with people saying, “HUH?”.

Palin’s Debate Claim Not Accurate That She Opposed Darfur Investments When She First “Found Out” About Them

Documents Show Palin Administration Supported Investments in

Businesses Linked to Darfur Genocide Until March, 2008

“When I and others in the legislature found out we had some millions of dollars in Sudan, we called for divestment through legislation of those dollars to make sure we weren’t doing anything that would be seen as condoning the activities there in Darfur.”
Sarah Palin, Oct. 2, 2008, VP Debate.

Anchorage, AK – During last week’s Vice Presidential debate, Governor Palin stated that once she “found out” that her state’s large investment funds held stock in companies linked to the Darfur genocide, she worked to divest from them, in a stand against Sudan’s brutal genocide. Dozens of other states have divested from companies linked to the government-sponsored genocide in Sudan’s Darfur region. The facts show the Governor did not in fact take a stand on this issue when she “found out” about it. A recently discovered 2006 letter, other documents, and records of legislative committee testimony show the Palin Administration opposed efforts by Alaska legislators to pass a Darfur divestment bill until near the end of the 2007-2008 legislative session.
These documents (linked below) show Governor Palin was asked by members of Congress to divest from Sudan’s genocide-related companies in November of 2006. Records show her Administration was asked again to divest through 2007, that this issue was discussed in Alaska’s media, and that her Administration opposed legislation to divest from these companies through February of 2008.
“The Administration’s opposition to our divestment legislation was one of the reasons we couldn’t get the bill passed. I do appreciate that they eventually dropped their opposition. But in fairness, they didn’t do anything to help when they found out about this problem,” said Alaska State Rep. Les Gara (D-Anch.), who filed legislation in 2007 with co-Sponsor Rep. Bob Lynn (R-Anch), to require Alaska to divest from companies implicated in the Darfur genocide. The following documents demonstrate the Palin Administration was asked to join the divestment effort in November of 2006, and opposed divestment efforts through February of 2008:

1. In November, 2006, members of Congress wrote personally to the Governor to ask that she join other states in divesting their assets from companies implicated by the human rights community in the Darfur genocide.

(Nov. 2006 Letter To Palin).

2. In 2007 the Alaska press started covering the public effort to get Alaska to divest from genocide-implicated companies doing business in Sudan.

(Dec, 2007 Alaska NBC News Story On divestment Effort).

3. In December 2007, members of the Save Darfur Coalition Met with the Governor’s office, without success, in an effort to gain support for divestment.

(Save Darfur Coalition Meeting With Governor’s Office, December, 2007).

(Bill Press release, January, 2008)

4. The Palin Administration testified in opposition to divestment from companies implicated in the Darfur genocide. On February 9, 2008, the Alaska Legislature’s House State Affairs Committee held its first hearing on Rep. Lynn & Gara’s HB 287. The Palin Administration and the Permanent Fund Corporation testified against the bill. Brian Andrews (since deceased), Deputy Commissioner of the State of Alaska, Department of Revenue, testified on behalf of the Palin Administration. This testimony helped kill this bill, with 4 members of the Governor’s Republican party stating their opposition to the bill (Reps. Bob Roses, Craig Johnson, Kyle Johansen and John Coghill). The bill never left this committee, and died when the legislative session ended on April 12, 2008. Deputy Commissioner Andrews testified at length against divestment from Sudan, and stated in part: “[T]he desire to make a difference is noble, but mixing moral and political agendas at the expense of our citizens’ financial security is not a good combination.”
(Feb 9, 2008 House State Affairs Committee testimony Minutes).

(Juneau Empire Press Coverage).

5. Through February and March, 2008, the Save Darfur Coalition and Rep. Gara kept working to change the Administration’s position. The former held a rally on the capitol steps. “I was pretty angry at how lightly the Permanent Fund and Administration took this issue, and began pushing for meetings to convince them that investing in genocide was wrong,” said Gara. Rep. Gara’s office held meetings with both the Commissioner of the Department of Revenue, Pat Galvin, and Permanent Fund Corporation Director Mike Burns. In late March of 2008 the Commissioner of Revenue and Governor agreed to change course and support the divestment effort. On April 1 Commissioner Galvin testified in favor of a companion Senate bill, sponsored by Sen. Hollis French (D – Anch.). But with 12 days left in the legislation session at that point, the bill never made it to the Senate or House Floor for a vote, and House Bill 287 never made it out of the House State Affairs Committee.

She is beyond foul. NOTHING she does surprises me anymore. Oh wait, that statement of condolences for Joe Biden and his family released by her campaign this morning, THAT surprised me. I’m guessing someone else wrote that up and released it as a PR move, though.

Nothing heinous, inappropriate, mindless, self-serving, dishonest, or just plain DUMB that she does surprises me anymore. I wonder if she knows where Darfur is and/or could locate it on a globe.

Off topic:

I got a kick out of this McCain quote today: “The GOP presidential candidate told a campaign rally: “Sen. Obama has accused me of opposing regulation to avert this crisis. I guess he believes if a lie is big enough and repeated often enough it will be believed.””

Wow!! Really?? John McCain has been doing this his entire campaign and now he wants to accuse Obama of it? Wow, the GOP is getting really desperate!

They are craven. They are desperate.

My hat is still off to Margaret Atwood. Sarah Palin is right out of THE HANDMAID’S TALE. I had always heard about these wackos rising through the PTA, the City Council, trying to make their way to the Big Show. But honestly, I had never lived anywhere where someone as duplicitous as Palin was in office (and that’s saying A LOT, as there is major corruption in every state).

Palin & Darfur & lies…No, I’m not surprised. I guess what surprises me the most is that some Republicans just don’t care. But how they would EVER trust their economic interests to those two idiots McP is beyond me.

I guess Sarah will come back and say she was not aware of what her employees were doing. As soon as she was finally made aware she acted.

I’m so glad she’s going on the attack. It reveals her mean girl persona and will completely diffuse the “I’m just like you meme.” Nobody, except the hardcore Repub base, wants to be “just like” a vicious slandering bully. Plus, it totally removes the element of fear about how attacking a woman will be perceived on the part of the Obama camp. She started it. She opened the doors to questionable associations, pastor problems and anti-Semitism. Hope Biden and McCain walk right through with their verbal guns blazing.

Sadly, I think she is hooked to the national spotlight and will now be a fixture in national politics regardless of whether McCain wins or not (thanks a lot, John). She’ll probably run for Steven’s seat if they can manage to alternate their jail terms.

This woman, for lack of a better word, is just straight toilet trash. Not a drop of conscience and not a drop of compassion. An empty plastic shell of a subhuman, totally devoid of any E Q (emotional quotient), a much more telling indicator of a person’s humanity than an I Q. I cannot for the life of me understand how someone of such LOW morals could be chosen to run as VP. Mr. McCain, I’m afraid, has lost his moral compass as well. Beyond contempt, the both of them.

I was just going to type, “How can you tell when Sarah Palin is lying? When her lips move,” but the pitbull with lipstick has verbal diarrhea. She needs to just stop talking.

Even the conservatives think McCain has lost this on the economy going down the toilet. And that Kathleen Parker of the National Review/Washington Post chat thought the debate winking was “unserious and obnoxious.” She was the one that got hate mail for saying Palin should step down.

The stock market drops another 400 pts and the McCain campaign is all lies, all the time.

I know this was also discussed on another thread, and various pundits have weighed in on it. But I think Palin is done; put a fork in her. How could she possibly be rehabilitated after this major loss? She is the original “falling star.”

And one thing I have not heard any Alaskans comment on: “HOW DOES PALIN RESPOND TO LOSING?” Yes, we know she is a vindictive horror, but when she lost the Miss Alaska pageant, for example, how did she respond? Has she ever lost a political race? If so, did she go into a depression?

I think Palin might actually believe her lies when she says them, or crafts them as wishful thinking. ‘This is what I want to be true, so it is true.’ In many ways, she reminds me of a two-year old (including her thought process). Me, me, me, it’s all about me.

In that, she and McCain are a perfect match.

Martin Samuel

There is a time when it is necessary to take the gloves off and that time is right now, said Sarah Palin in Colorado. Interesting that she did not want the gloves off before her vice-presidential debate with Joe Biden. Oh, gloves on then. Headgear, too. Maybe some of those big shoulder pads that quarter-backs wear; and throw cushions for a softer landing. In fact, Palin and her minders could not have demanded a safer arena for debate when the opposition was within striking distance. Biden appeared with his hands tied, his intellect muted, his manner subdued, lest he should seem smarter, better informed or more competent than his opponent, a move which was inexplicably deemed undesirable. This shows how far we have come. Intelligence is now viewed as a threat. Isn’t that how Pol Pot operated?

Separatist But Equal
By: Eli Monday October 6, 2008 2:03 pm

So Sarah Palin wants to accuse Barack Obama of “pallin’ around with terrorists” because he has a very distant acquaintance with a member of the Weather Underground? Really?

That’s an awfully daring strategy, considering that not only is she sleeping with a former member of the Alaskan Independence Party (AIP), a radical separatist movement whose founder died in an explosives deal gone bad, she’s cc’ing him on government e-mails and letting him sit in on government meetings.

And if that’s not enough, she tried to install a right-wing militia member on Wasilla’s city planning board when she was mayor, and she recorded a very supportive video address for the AIP’s convention this year, telling the secessionists to “keep up the good work.”

So, what’s worse? Being vaguely associated with anti-American radicals, or marrying them and giving them pep talks and a prominent role in your government?

And I haven’t even mentioned John McCain’s good friends Charles Keating and G. Gordon Liddy. Whoops! I guess I just have.

I have been wondering why Palin just keeps on lying. Well…its because she can. She doesnt give interviews…so who the hell is going to call her on it. She goes to her rallies…talks her hillbilly gibberish…acts smug, and then goes on to the next one. I dont even blame the media for this….they arent permitted to talk to her. I would like to see them ignore her rallies though. Why should they follow her around…why should she get any attention. She cant be bothered speaking to all Americans….she is only preaching to her choir..the base.

I did see a Sherriff in fully uniform on TV at one of her rallies today, and I was stunned. He stood up there….giving a speech saying….I cant wait for the look on Barack HUSSEIN Obamas face on November 4.

Are your police officers…sherriff especially…permitted to so openly talk against one candidate while introducing another one. I know things are different there…than here in Canada…but the head of our Police Dept…and in my town its the Federal police..RCMP..would NEVER think of doing such a thing. Unbelievable and disgusting.

Why am I not surprised ??

McCain and Palin’s audacity and self-righteousness are unwavering. If it is opportunistic, noteworthy, newsworthy, self-aggrandizing, or career-advancing, they have regulated/deregulated it and worked for/worked against it depending upon how the wind is blowing and how the polls are polling.

Pseudo-mavericks at best, the pair are destined to live out the Peter Principle, with each rising to his or her level of incompetence — and untrustworthiness.

This is such a bald-faced lie that I cannot believe it! And about such a tragic situation, it is stupefying. To quote the immortal Paul Westerberg, ‘Everyone is trying to make you feel stupid/And you know they’re lyin’/’Cause their lips are movin’.’

Again, this needs to get out. I saw an earlier version of this somewhere with Les Gara being quoted, but not at this level of detail.

And it seems like we will not have a press conference with Palin, nor a release of medical records, nothing approaching the access the electorate should have for such an important decision.

While recently in Alaska as part of his duties, Noam Scheiber, senior editor of The National Review, “came across a piece of paper from an old Wasilla city budget, on the back of which Palin doodled and brainstormed her potential mayoral campaign themes (“time for a change,” “you would be my boss!”) and qualifications (“life-long alaskan,” “NRA supporter,” “taxpayer!”). Read the fine print on this 1996 document; it’s a fascinating glimpse into how she thought she could best present herself to the Wasilla electorate.”

ok…before I left work today, I glanced at one of the MSNBC headlines which read “McCain accuses Obama of lying” I was only able to read part of the story, because I became so angry that I wasn’t sure I would be able to drive home from work if I read the rest! mccain accuses obama of lying????? give me a break! luckily, when I got home and looked on CNN, I found their headline to read “obama widens lead in polls” 🙂 those are polls taken as of THIS AFTERNOON! article goes on to point out that this indicates that the average voter (could that be Joe six packs among us?) still tie McCain to Bush and our failing economy….AND (and we mudflatians GOTTA love this) his running mate is bringing him down!
I’m still worried about how low McCain and Palin can go to win this election, but as long as Obama keeps going up in the polls, I like to believe the two “mavericks” are digging their own graves. Hey Sarah….say it ain’t so!!!

Ok I am going to post this great article about Palin again. I really think it gets to the heart of who she is and why people want to like her, but have questions

Is She a Hometown Girl or a Seductress?

After my first and only political Shadow Blog, I received more mail from my readers than I’ve received in my entire career. Thank you for your overwhelming response. Obviously, my message gave voice to what many of you were already feeling. I apologize once again to those of you I’ve offended. (If you were offended by the last one, don’t be a masochist. Close this one now as you’re certainly going to be offended by this one as well.) Even at the risk of losing more of my readers, I feel compelled to continue to share my views on the upcoming election because we’ve got one of the best shadow figures — literally — that we’ve seen in a long time. And being a shadow lover, I just can’t pass it up. We’re all very lucky that this election gives us an unprecedented opportunity to see the shadow in all its disguises and all its glory. I would be remiss to ignore it.

This week, like most of you, I sat glued to my TV watching the Vice Presidential debate. Within three minutes and after the first wink, I became fascinated once again with Sarah Palin. I asked myself, “What is the deal with this woman? Why is she winking at me? Is she flirting with me?” I had to take a deep breath because I noticed this queasy feeling growing in the pit of my stomach.

I just received this from a progressive friend who got it from another progressive friend, who… and so on. Unfortunately I cannot provide proper credit or a link. So, with apologies to our Canadian Mudpals who have so generously offered to sponsor us and put us up, just think, we too could be illegal immigrants.

From the MANITOBA HERALD, Canada (a very underground paper):

A flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada has intensified in the past weeks, sparking calls for increased patrols to stop the illegal immigration.

The possibility of a McCain/Palin election is prompting the exodus among left-leaning citizens who fear they’ll soon be required to hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O’Reilly.

Canadian border farmers say it’s not uncommon to see dozens of sociology professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians crossing their fields at night.

‘I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood producer huddled in the barn,’ said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield, whose acreage borders North Dakota.

The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. He asked me if I could spare a latte and some free-range chicken.

When I said I didn’t have any, he left. Didn’t even get a chance to show him my screenplay, eh?’

In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher fences, but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing speakers that blare Rush Limbaugh across the fields. ‘Not real effective,’ he said. ‘The liberals still got through, and Rush annoyed the cows so much they wouldn’t give milk.’

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet liberals near the Canadian border; pack them into Volvo station wagons; drive them across the border and leave them to fend for themselves.

‘A lot of these people are not prepared for rug ged conditions,’ an Ontario border patrol! man said. ‘I found one carload without a drop of drinking water. ‘They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet, though.’

When liberals are caught, they’re sent back across the border, often wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors have been circulating about the McCain administration establishing re-education camps in which liberals will be forced to shoot wolves from airplanes, deny evolution, and act out drills preparing them for the Rapture.

In recent days, liberals have turned to sometimes-ingenious ways of crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the supposed senior-citizen passengers on Perry Como and Rosemary Clooney hits to prove they were alive in the ’50s.

‘If they can’t identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk Show, we get suspicious about their age,’ an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are creating an organic-broccoli shortage and renting all the good Susan Sarandon movies.

‘I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just can’t support them,’ an Ottawa resident said. ‘How many art-history and English majors does one country need?

this is another story that talks about sarah’s “wasilla days” and details some of her backstabbing but look to the links on the right side of the page, under “related content.”

there are four “pages” of “sarah palin’s campaign pamphlet” (they look to be four stand-alone campaign handouts, with very interesting content) and a link to palin’s contemplative page of “doodling.”

http://www.tnr.com/politics/story.html?id=8c130fe3-adab-4cb3-8443-c363f085cf13&p=4

it would be great if people could research her claims and/or promises in these documents, comparing it to what actually happened.

she’s pretty hilarious — the campaign slogan she apparently settled on was “positively sarah.”

Just curious….. At the end of the article above it states that the Governor eventually decided to go along with divestment in March of this year (almost a year an a half after she was initially approached with the recommendation), and it says that the bill was never voted upon because the legislative session ended. Has it been voted on now and did the legislature vote to divest itself of Sudanese investments?

I’m glad the McCain supporter (in full uniform) brought up Obama’s middle name, Hussein, today. I use it as fuel to prove McCain “doesn’t get it”.
The moderate/progressive Muslims are crucial in eradicating extremist terrorism actions worldwide…and he is using one of their most common (and meaningful) names in an attempt to prove Obama “unfit”. How do you engage assistance from a particular cultural group when you are also using that culture’s heritage (naming) as an insult? Bush ought to have shown McPalin that you don’t spit in the eye of those you need to ally with!!
Obama is right…McPalin just doesn’t get it.
And i’m going to e-mail this Darfur thread to Matthews, Oberman, Maddow and Factcheck…hoping someone will follow up on this.
Again, you guys are awesome!!! Thank you

I found the following on the Washington Post’s comments section and I hope the person who posted it doesn’t mind my posting it here, but I thought it might be of interest. I have not ‘vetted’ it, so it needs verification. Eyebrow-raising stuff!

McCain has plenty of relationships with sixties radicals and terrorists. Indeed, until just a few years ago, McCain openly boasted not only about his passing friendship but also his deep collaboration with one of the most prominent of Vietnam-era student radicals, David Ifshin – who denounced America on Radio Hanoi as McCain sat locked up as a POW. Until the day he died, at age 47 in 1996, Ifshin never renounced nor apologized for his youthful, radical past. McCain said of Ifshin, “We worked together for our shared ideals.”

And then there’s Carl H. Lindner Jr., billionaire Cincinnati businessman, CEO of Chiquita Brands International from 1984 to 2001, and remained on the company’s board of directors until May 2002.As the co-host of a recent top-dollar fundraiser for Sen. John McCain, Lindner oversaw the payment of roughly $1.7 million to a Colombian paramilitary group that is today designated a terrorist organization by the United States.

Chiquita executives paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC), which is described by George Washington University’s National Security Archive as an “illegal right-wing anti-guerrilla group tied to many of the country’s most notorious civilian massacres.” Following a Justice Department indictment last year, Chiquita admitted to illegally funding the paramilitaries and agreed to pay a $25 million fine. Chiquita’s payments to the AUC began in 1997 and lasted seven years; roughly half of the funds came after the group was designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. State Department in 2001.

While Lindner was CEO of Chiquita, the company began sending money to the AUC through its shipping subsidiary Banadex. A report by the Organization of American States states that Banadex also engaged in arms trafficking, helping to deliver 3,000 Nicaraguan AK-47 rifles and millions of rounds of ammunition to the AUC in 2001. According to federal prosecutors, when company officials realized the arrangement was illegal, they switched to making the payments in cash.

According to the Justice Department, the payments “were reviewed and approved by senior executives” of Chiquita, who knew by no later than September 2000 “that the AUC was a violent, paramilitary organization.”

Late last week, Lindner co-hosted a $25,000-per-person fundraiser for McCain and the Republican Party in the wealthy Indian Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. The event raised about $2 million; Lindner also serves on McCain’s Ohio Victory Team. McCain has described FARC as “one of the worst” terrorist groups and accused his opponent, Sen. Barack Obama, of being unwilling to support Colombian President Uribe’s anti-terrorist efforts. The Arizona Republican is raising funds from a man whose company once paid that very same terrorist group.

And then, there’s G. Gordon Liddy – fundraiser/contributor for John McCain. Liddy, a self-professed admirer of Adolf Hitler and CONVICTED FELON for his part in the Watergate Scandal, is a long-time friend, says John McCain, who also said to Liddy, “I’m proud of you.”:

And then, there’s Charles Keating, CONVICTED FELON and mentor of John McCain — who is the most damning relationship of all, given the eerily similar banking meltdown of the current economic crisis… McCain was censured in Congress for his role in the Savings and Loans scandals back in 1989-91 that cost taxpayers $500 BILLION to bailout… McCain claimed then to have learned his lesson, but apparently not.

I think Maureen Dowd said it best a couple of days ago:

“Real Mavericks don’t brand themselves.” She was speaking about Palin, but I think it applies to John McCain, too.

This whole thing is just making me sick. I cannot believe people support her. She came to Omaha (which now needs to be disinfected) last night with SRO (in a fairly good sized venue, sigh) and all the Nebraska papers are aflutter. However, Obama opened a SECOND headquarters in Omaha, and Lincoln is mobilizing without formal support from the campaign. I don’t think the old repub guard has realized the impact that liberals/Demos in Nebraska are having… and I think we may just see a split electoral vote this year! This is huge!

Our Legislature ended its current (regular) Session on April 13, 2008. Because this is an election year, any bills that did not get passed by the end of regular session will have to be reintroduced by sponsors when the next Legislative Session begins in January 20, 2009 (returning legislators, new legislators (we HOPE), and all). I know Rep. Gara will be back, so my bet is he’ll reintroduce the Darfur devestment bill, with co-sponsors too I’m sure.

for those wondering about the palin tax returns …

The release of an opinion letter by attorney Roger M. Olsen dated September 30, 2008, has stirred up the pot once again about the accuracy of Sarah and Todd Palin’s 2006 and 2007 tax returns. Not only that, but Mr. Olsen’s letter raises a couple of new issues.

This paper focuses on five problems: three raised in the tax returns and two new ones raised by Mr. Olsen’s letter. Here’s a summary of the five problems and my conclusions, for those who want to cut to the chase. My analysis will follow.

kimbers Chop Meth Palin

MJC- that video of McCain’s response to the person in the crowd who responded ‘terrorist’ to McCain’s question about who Obama is, was just beyond the pale.

Why it just makes me want to go to his town hall style meeting here on Friday and ask him point blank if he thinks Obama is a terrorist (since I’m sure no one will touch that tomorrow night).

So, I decided to bite the bullet and sign up on the campaign’s website to get a ticket. But, the ‘event’ wasn’t listed there. Hmmmmm…. So, I called the campaign headquarters here and found out that you have to go to one of 3 campaign offices and pick up your ticket in person and the McCain campaign won’t give you one unless you commit to doing volunteer work for them.

Good luck with that.

They are predicting 5000 people turning out and I’ll bet it will be under 1000 for all the steps you have to take just to get a ticket.

On a brigher note, I have been out canvassing for the last 3 days (in both MN and WI) and I’m happy to report that overall people aren’t falling for the McCain/Palin nonsense and it’s working up into a huge backlash for McCain and Palin that will show with increased votes for Obama and Barr and several hardcore Republicans so disgusted they will not be voting at all.

Dems and Independents are really, really fired up!!

As much as it pains my ears and my brain, I hope that McCain, Palin and their supporters keep this nonsense going while Obama mostly stays on message. It really seems to be telling people who they really are.

I’ll come here if I need to scream. : )

Hey folks, this is my first time posting and I’ve read the incredible wealth of knowledge. Thanks Mudflats!! This is extremely insightful and informative. I love coming here and reading the well written facts about Palin. Kudos to the Alaskans who have the guts to tell the truth!! We in the lower 48 greatly appreciate this blog. Personally I want Palin exposed for the liar that she is.

To those of you who are emailing “The View” regarding E.H., don’t bother. Bob Geddes, the show’s Republican producer, has that email box going straight to his inbox. Someone who works for the show blogged about it when Rosie and E.H. had that blowout. The best way to get critic E.H. is to blog about it. My take is that Geddes will not fire E.H., but Walters will.

6 10 2008

I just realized that the only thing Sarah Palin is good at is lying.

She can lie without remorse, without regret, without blinking and even while winking. She will read whatever is put in front of her without a nanosecond of hestitation as to whether or not she really believes it, understands it or agrees with it.

McCain has a campaign that can not run on issues because he is on the wrong side of every damn issue that really matters to most Americans right now.

So if you think about it, he really has the perfect running mate for himself. A semi-attractive, ammoral, compulsive and pathlogical liar who will regurgitate bile and lies and semi-veiled racists attacks and do it all with a big smile on her face, a twinkle in her eye and a twitch of her nose.

This woman scares me to death. Has anyone ever seen her show true emotion?

The Washington Post from 10/4 called out Palin on Darfur. They called it an exaggeration and not a lie – but the way I read it, it’s a lie.

“PINOCCHIO TEST

Sarah Palin is exaggerating her role in leading the Sudan divestiture in Alaska. The legislative record shows that her administration was late in embracing the campaign to sell stock in companies that do business with Sudan, and that it initially opposed the divestiture. The Alaska Permanent Fund still invests in companies blacklisted by the Save Darfur Coalition.

TWO PINOCCHIOS: Significant omissions or exaggerations”

Also, Palin and McCain are in good company – today I was waiting at the drugstore checkout and noticed the headline on the National Enquirer that has solid “proof” that Barack Obama is a muslim.

look up The Hatch Act

The Hatch Act explicitly states that an individual:
1. May not use their official authority or influence to interfere with an election
2. May not engage in political activity while on duty
3. May not engage in political activity while in uniform
4. May not wear political buttons on duty

(If the Merit Systems Protection Board finds that the violation warrants dismissal from employment, the employing agency must either remove the employee or forfeit a portion of the federal assistance equal to two years salary of the employee. If the Board finds the violation does not warrant the employee’s removal, no penalty is imposed.)

Just watched a lively but very civil debate on PCN.org between Arianna Huffington and Mike Huckabee at the Annual PA Chamber of Business and Industry dinner in Harrisburg, pennsyltucky. Huckabee can argue McCain’s positions better than McCain does. But even Huckabee stretches the truth a bit when it comes to substantive matters, ie, he claims to know a trucker who makes in excess of $250k a year and would be negatively affected by Obama’s tax proposal. The call-in segment of the program is sad, really sad.

Doug from Allentown called in to claim that Obama wants to “kill all small business.” Welcome to pennsyltucky and the small-minded non-thinkers that live here.

EVERYONE ON THIS BLOG…THINK ABOUT THIS…
Now is the time to concentrate on defeating John McCain. If all of us channel our energies to defeat John McCain as we have on Ms. Palin, then we rid ourselves of Sarah Palin and the rest of the story will take cancer of itself. It is my opinion that as long as we do nothing but concentrate on Sarah Palin’s idiocy, then we miss the real target of this election…It Is John McCain!

John McCain is the one who chose her, he’s the one who’s hiding behind her skirts, he’s the one who is sending her out in public with this rediculous “script”. Let’s face it, she’s not intelligent enough to subcribe to the text she is spousing, let alone have any intimate knowledge of the retoric which she is engaging in. She’s nothing but a “boob” and his mouth piece. As long as we hone in on Sarah, we’re not focusing on the true “enemy” in this fight…it is John McCain!

Let’s start using our research and journalistic skills to dig up all we can about John McCain and sharing it with our global family of blogers to eliminate them both, forever, from influencing our children’s future.

Hi Bill,

You’re absolutely right. We should all be helping our fellow citizens be better informed. I love this blog because it helps me do that. Part of the reason why I’m so insistent that we beat McCain is because of his choice of a running mate.

I plan to do a lot of letter writing to local papers (New Mexico) so that the McCain campaign doesn’t get away with its lies.

Viva USA; si se puede!

(QUOTE: McCain suggested bold reforms for Fannie and Freddie that would “terminate future lobbying, which was one of the primary contributors to this great debacle.”

If that’s the case, McCain should look first to his campaign staffers as the cause of that debacle. One of them was Fannie Mae’s head of lobbying, and spread tens of millions of dollars around Washington in the form of lobbying contracts. A number of McCain staffers were on the receiving end of those contracts, collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars each from the lenders to rep their interests. And McCain’s campaign manager served as president of a lobbying association that fought to protect Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae from the sort of regulation that McCain is now proposing.)

(QUOTE: John McCain would pay for his health plan with major reductions to Medicare and Medicaid, a McCain top aide said, in a move that independent analysts estimate could result in cuts of $1.3 trillion over 10 years to the government programs.

But Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Sen. McCain’s senior policy adviser, said Sunday that the campaign has always planned to fund the tax credits, in part, with savings from Medicare and Medicaid. Those government health-care programs serve seniors, poor families and the disabled. Medicare spending for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30 is estimated at $457.5 billion.)

McCain likes to say he is a champion for vets …
He likes to say he will take care of our veterans but he has voted to cut benefits every chance he gets.
He likes to say he is for breaking the stranglehold of Big Oil and yet he votes against every alternative energy bill that comes across his desk.
John McCain says a lot of things but unfortunately they seldom mirror his actions.

McCain has voted NO or present on numerous GI bills while Obama has voted yes. Then McCain stands there and says “I’ll protect the veterans of this country!” I thought Obama should have called him out during the debate and wonder why he didn’t??
Call him out about claiming to being a champion for veterans, but that his voting record has proved he is anything but.
Not only has McCAIN refused to support the 21st Century GI Bill, which the Veterans of Foreign Wars endorsed last June, he has consistently voted against increasing funding for the Veterans” Administration, which oversees all medical care for veterans:

” Voted AGAINST an amendment providing $20 billion to the VA”s medical facilities. [5/4/06]

” Voted AGAINST providing $430 million to the VA for outpatient care “and treatment for veterans,” one of only 13 senators to do so. [4/26/06]

” Voted AGAINST increasing VA funding by $1.5 billion by closing corporate loopholes. [3/14/06]

” Voted AGAINST increasing VA funding by $1.8 billion by ending “abusive tax loopholes.” [3/10/04]

” Voted AGAINST FOR a $650 million increase in veterans” medical care funding. [8/1/01]

God, I am tired of this woman. Unfortunately she is on a roll since she thinks she beat Biden in the debate. So, now she can just be as mean and vicious as possible about Obama…. and keep on going. I have been reading some of the articles in the Huffpost. She may be planning on becoming president! We may even see her in 2012. And go on SNL (oh boy… I don’t care enough to watch). Oh my God…. I just want her to go away so bad. I can’t even stand looking at her face and hearing the stupidity out of her mouth anymore. What is even more boring… are the ridiculous people defending her. Yuck!

@tess…thank you for the info on the Hatch act. I am Canadian, and I know that an officer in uniform here would never be permitted to do what that officer did. I hope Americans on this blog and elsewhere will write to the proper authorities. What he did made me feel ill.

This article on the Huffpost comparing Palin’s track record on disabilities with Obama’s is pretty good…
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-k-longmore/palin-talks-about-special_b_131758.html
Despite the fact that she has a new Down syndrome baby, she doesn’t have the slightest idea what the future will hold. My son with Down syndrome is now 28. And it has been a really interesting journey. If it wasn’t for the caregiver union (SEIU) in Washington State in the past few years our lives who be a lot more insecure. Here is another avenue for advocacy in Alaska for people with disabilities and their caregivers to fight the government and demand services. Organize the union up there… it is worth it! It would be another blow against Palin and all the people like her who do not have a clue.

Maybe there were add-ons and earmarks with each of those legislative attempts? Because no one would use a hot button topic like Darfur to try and sneak a few kickbacks to their constituents. You accuse Governor Palin of not being honest, and yet you don’t present everything associated with the issue (IE: A copy of the actual bill presented to the Governor). But it’s cool, attempt to over exaggerate the other side in an effort to make the democratic party look better.

She make a lot of claims and shows us no evidence to back up these claims. Of course that’s her whole schtick. She thinks that American people are too stupid to actually do some research on their own and verify what she pulls out of her hat. Unfortunately Sarah….we are not. We actually do look up documents, listen to both sides of the story and make up our own minds and not just what you TELL us we are supposed to believe.

Laurie (13:22:15) :
The Hatch act is specific to federal service. While most states have a “mini”-hatch act it -usually- applies to merit service employees, not political or elected ones. This sheriff may well be within his legal rights. Possibly stupid, when people remember his stand, but, alas, legal.

Deputy Commissioner Andrews testified at length against divestment from Sudan, and stated in part:
“[T]he desire to make a difference is noble, but mixing moral and political agendas at the expense of our citizens’ (…financial…) security is not a good combination.”
Funny how much difference one word makes.
