Not that it matters …
Or does it?

This is a story from the Norwegian newspaper VG, the biggest newspaper in the country, from today’s edition. Not that these things matter in today’s dog-eat-dog world, but I found it quite touching, and I want to share.

Clarification for the literally minded: I do think these things matter, but I’m sure many will say that they don’t. Anecdotal evidence, just a sappy human interest story, bla bla. Whatever. I think that this is a story that some may be interested in hearing. If you’re not interested, cork it. I’ve translated the story into English and am posting it here. The original, in Norwegian, is here.

I’ll be cross-posting this to the BookCrossing forum, since I’m sure there are some members there who will appreciate reading it.

I’m sorry about the annoyingly sappy language – this is a speculative tabloid so that’s just how all their articles are.

Mary lacked money to fly home to Norway – he saved her love

ÅSGÅRDSTRAND (VG): Mary was a newlywed and ready to move to Norway, but was stopped at the airport because she didn’t have enough money for the trip. Then a stranger turned up and paid for her.

Mary Menth Andersen was 31 years old at the time and had just married Norwegian Dag Andersen. She was looking forward to starting a new life in Åsgårdstrand in Vestfold with him. But first she had to get all of her belongings across to Norway. The date was November 2nd, 1988.
At the airport in Miami things were hectic as usual, with long lines at the check-in counters. When it was finally Mary’s turn and she had placed her luggage on the baggage line, she got the message that would crush her bubbling feeling of happiness.
-You’ll have to pay a 103 dollar surcharge if you want to bring both those suitcases to Norway, the man behind the counter said.
Mary had no money. Her new husband had travelled ahead of her to Norway, and she had no one else to call.
-I was completely desperate and tried to think which of my things I could manage without. But I had already made such a careful selection of my most prized possessions, says Mary.

Although she explained the situation to the man behind the counter, he showed no signs of mercy.
-I started to cry, tears were pouring down my face and I had no idea what to do. Then I heard a gentle and friendly voice behind me saying, That’s OK, I’ll pay for her.
Mary turned around to see a tall man whom she had never seen before.
-He had a gentle and kind voice that was still firm and decisive. The first thing I thought was, Who is this man?
Although this happened 20 years ago, Mary still remembers the authority that radiated from the man.
-He was nicely dressed, fashionably dressed with brown leather shoes, a cotton shirt open at the throat and khaki pants, says Mary.
She was thrilled to be able to bring both her suitcases to Norway and assured the stranger that he would get his money back. The man wrote his name and address on a piece of paper that he gave to Mary. She thanked him repeatedly. When she finally walked off towards the security checkpoint, he waved goodbye to her.

The piece of paper said ‘Barack Obama’ and his address in Kansas, which is the state where his mother comes from. Mary carried the slip of paper around in her wallet for years, before it was thrown out.
-He was my knight in shining armor, says Mary, smiling.
She paid the 103 dollars back to Obama the day after she arrived in Norway. At that time he had just finished his job as a poorly paid community worker* in Chicago, and had started his law studies at prestigious Harvard university.
In the spring of 2006 Mary’s parents had heard that Obama was considering a run for president, but that he had still not decided. They chose to write a letter in which they told him that he would receive their votes. At the same time, they thanked Obama for helping their daughter 18 years earlier.
In a letter to Mary’s parents dated May 4th, 2006 and stamped ‘United States Senate, Washington DC’, Barack Obama writes**:
‘I want to thank you for the lovely things you wrote about me and for reminding me of what happened at Miami airport. I’m happy I could help back then, and I’m delighted to hear that your daughter is happy in Norway. Please send her my best wishes. Sincerely, Barack Obama, United States senator’.
The parents sent the letter on to Mary.

This week VG met her and her husband in the café that she runs with her friend Lisbeth Tollefsrud in Åsgårdstrand.
-It’s amazing to think that the man who helped me 20 years ago may now become the next US president, says Mary delightedly.
She has already voted for Obama. She recently donated 100 dollars to his campaign.
She often tells the story from Miami airport, both when race issues are raised and when the conversation turns to the presidential elections.
-I sincerely hope the Americans will see reason and understand that Obama means change, says Mary.

*Not at all sure about this part of the translation. The Norwegian word used is ‘miljøarbeider’, I don’t know what the exact English word for that is or even if there is one, and I don’t know enough about Obama to say what job of his they’re talking about.
**This is my translation of the reporter’s translation of the letter. From English to Norwegian and back to English. So obviously it is not correct word for word.

And here she is with her husband and the letter.

This is not a big or important story. But it is a nice story and if one is voting for a person, and not just for a political platform, it might be interesting to hear it. Somehow I don’t see this story being covered in American media much, so let’s count this as one blogger’s contribution to the news coverage of the 2008 election. 🙂

If anyone wants to post this anywhere else, be my guest.

I actually agree w/Jennifer @20:46 that he was a little off-putting. Don’t get me wrong– I usually love Keith-O’s Special Comments, but I thought this one wasn’t as tight as many of the others, and he could’ve made his case more effectively for those beyond just the leftie left. I actually chose to post a different segment of tonight’s show– #5, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95M_zcb0Fig– on my site, which I thought made the case more compellingly (or perhaps just a little less partisanly [? it looks like a combo of artisan and parsley] by damning them with their own words) and caused me to spout invective against McCain-Palin in no uncertain terms.

And which also had me so spitting mad that I had to bring out the Holy Hand Grenade, which has been waiting in the wings for a desperate hour, for comic relief. Michael Palin helps me survive Sarah Palin.

Tom is very outraged that anyone in uniform (he was army, combat and MP) would so disrespect the office and a government official (Obama). PJ – the name of that Florida sheriff at the Palin rally was exposed on the previous thread – somewhere around the middle I think. I have to question if he should be wearing his uniform at something like that. Was that on work time?

Someone on the previous thread (sorry – too tired to go search) made an excellent point about the mocking of the name Hussein. That is really trying to paint ALL Muslims as terrorists. But we’ll never achieve and end to the wars and peace in our world if we don’t work hand in hand with the peaceful Muslims.

Some of those world leaders Palin was meeting with were, gosh darn, Muslims! Of course we know the “base” she appeals to doesn’t devote one brain cell to these type of matters. Thank goodness enough of us do realize that understanding, tolerance, respect, and appreciation for our diverse world is how we’ll help reduce the numbers of those nasty terrorists.

It is also a big disconnect to me how Palin can brag about being a friend of Israel. You can’t convince me for one minute she means it. Or doesn’t she realize that Jews live there? – Well, maybe she doesn’t know that yet, as she gets her crash course on international relations! Because otherwise, I’m not counting on her somehow being free of anti-Semitic beliefs.

I’ve sent off my email to NBC re: the SNL issue. It reads like this:

This Alaskan is sick of the hate propagated by Sarah Palin! While I am glad that you are able to reach viewers, particularly young viewers, through comedy, putting real issues into play in a way that is meaningful for them, I am horrified to hear that you are planning to have Sarah Palin on your program.

I am completely against any such action, and would consider it to be essentially endorsing her current hate-mongering.

Please do not lower yourself to that level. She is not worth it! This country is bitterly divided and fighting a battle against racism, fear & imminent economic disaster, do not give her the credibility that she does not deserve. I suspect that your viewers will resoundingly revile such an action on the part of SNL. I, myself, would make it a point to contact each & every one of your advertisers to let them know of my views, and would encourage others to do the same.

For the sake of a united America, do not let Sarah Palin appear on SNL.

I loved what Keith said – he can’t go left enough for me! 🙂 He’s saying the stuff that everyone wants to say on national television, so I always feel he is speaking for me.

About Palinspeak: Ya know – there’s nothing really wrong with droppin’ the g’s at the end of words. I do it too, sometimes – nearly every American does in everyday language. “Where are you goin’?” or “Whatcha doin’?” Actually, Obama does it too, sometimes.

But with Palin, sometimes it sounds as if she’s exaggerating it for the effect, so it starts to sound fake. I think that’s why the CNN audience said they felt “contempt” for her by the end of the debate. And that’s why Tina Fey can keep rolling with it and make it so funny – Palin is already parodying herself, so it’s easy to parody her.

Found an interesting article regarding the $3M Grizzly Bear Study in Montana that McC brings up as Pork Barrel
(now that the bridge to nowhere died)

“””McCain has been using his bear laugh-line to attack earmarks since 2003, when he first spoke out against the grizzly bear study on the Senate floor. Since then, he’s cited the bear study on the stump and in campaign ads, joking that the DNA evidence might be needed to establish a cub’s paternity or to solve an ursine crime. Which hungry bear stole the hikers’ food?

Attacking excessive federal spending has been a hallmark of the McCain-Palin ticket, as the Republican candidates pledge to shrink government. But in the race for the White House, the past apparently is a foreign country. Just as Palin claims to have killed the bridge to nowhere, when it was already dead, McCain voted to fund the bear study that he loves to mock.

In the 2003 bill that included the bear study, according to FactCheck.org, McCain introduced three amendments to reduce funding for other projects. But he didn’t vote to cut the bear study. In fact, the study cost more than he says it did — about $5 million, not $3 million.

Maybe McCain voted for the study because, as much as he may get a kick out of ridiculing it, it is not some frivolous exercise in furry forensics. Nor is it partisan. Its funding was originally championed by Republican lawmakers, and its goal is one that both conservationists and “Drill, baby drill” cheerleaders can get behind.

The fact that the grizzly bears happen to be in Montana does not mean that that state is trying to pull a fast one on the feds for some pet project. The grizzly is currently listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act in the lower 48 states. To aid its recovery, which the feds are obligated by law to do, the government must figure out how many bears are out there. Only once they have established a baseline can they then ascertain if that number is going up, down or is stable. “””

{snip}

“”anybody who wants to log, drill for natural gas or oil, graze cattle or build roads in grizzly habitat, as well as their friends in politics, has a vested interest in finding out how many bears live in the area. A healthy bear population could mean relaxing restrictions on development of federal lands the bears call home. “”

Sarah Palin is a disgrace to Alaska. Her willingness to parrot every lie and smear put in front of her by the hacks running the McCain campaign is shameful. As KO pointed out, she recently misquoted Madeline Albright’s saying “There is a place in hell for any woman that does not help another woman.” After Governor Palin’s actions since August 29, I am quite sure there is a place in hell for her.

Dear Lorne Michaels

Please do not allow SNL to become part of the farce that is the McCain – Palin campaign of press manipulation. You are certainly aware of how upset Americans are that she will not hold true interviews and press conferences, and only appears in situations where she has control over the message and the outcome. I would hate to see SNL used as a vehicle in that regard.

Please think long and hard about what you are doing. You’ve got the ratings even without her, with Tina, and you lose many people’s respect if you are perceived as gunning for ratings without respect for political manipulation and gain.

Now that MSNBC has made my day with KO and RM being the antidote to the M/P venom, I will sleep like a baby. I’ve decided that since energy flows where attention goes, I’m going to turn my attention toward put my energy into supporting Obama/Biden. I so look forward to seeing their polls climbing and their voter base increasing each and every day until 11/4, when the largest turn-out in modern history assures them an overwhelming victory in both the popular vote and the electoral vote.

Just as we’ve decided not to feed the trolls, I’ve decided to stop allowing any of my attention to be captured by the non-sense M/P there supports are spitting out. Thank you AKM for keeping us enlightened, I plan on joining you tomorrow night for the next debate.

Not only can’t the media talk to Saint Sarah (a.k.a. Winky) but now they’re keeping the media from talking to people who attend her rallies (or lie festivals).

http://blogs.tampabay.com/breakingnews/2008/10/under-the-watch.html

This is just breaking and is just being reported on other blogs and news websites. Why the press would allow this is beyond me. Additionally I can’t understand why the press would even continue to cover the McCain campaign given the restrictions on access to the candidates. You can bet your paycheck that if the MSM pulled coverage that all of sudden Palin would be talking to every reporter she could find as long as a McCain handler is there with her to control the message.

It’s been said that the reason for this new policy was because during a recent speech where Palin brings up the Obama is a terrorist lie someone shouted out “Kill Him”. The campaign is afraid that other things that are being shouted by attendees are equally hateful and since Palin is inciting these people that anything they would say to a reporter at or after one of her speeches would be distasteful (i.e. hateful, bigoted, inciting violence, etc.) and make her look bad.

What McCain and Palin are doing is tantamount to inciting violence against Obama. Palin considers herself a christian yet she lies, holds grudges, persecutes her enemies, and incites hate against others. She is a hypocrite of the highest order and she makes Bush, Cheney, and Rove look like choir boys in comparision.

I’m sorry but if I was a citizen of Alaska I would be very embarrassed over what this woman is doing to the reputation of your state. You all deserve better and I hope the citizens take a long hard look at her when she gets back and you get to tell her to her face what a disgrace she is.

The answer to McCain’s new McCarthyism should be Joseph Welch’s response to the original McCarthyism. The situation is very similar and the response is very apt.

I just have to say I thought one of the funniest lines on the Daily Show tonight was when Jon Stewart talked about Joe-Sixpack Hockey moms. I’m not sure if Palin really meant to create an image of the carpool Mom downing a sixpack and then driving the kids to the hockey game, but I had to agree with Jon Stewart. That is exactly what it sounds like she is suggesting.

I mean who the heck is Joe Sixpack? In my experience Joe Sixpack, the guy who drinks a sixpack a night, is a guy with a serious drinking problem.

I also liked the Colbert Report when he talked about the inanity of Palin’s climate change comments.

I’m not one to attribute every man — activity of man to the changes in the climate. There is something to be said also for man’s activities, but also for the cyclical temperature changes on our planet.

But there are real changes going on in our climate. And I don’t want to argue about the causes. What I want to argue about is, how are we going to get there to positively affect the impacts?

We have got to clean up this planet. We have got to encourage other nations also to come along with us with the impacts of climate change, what we can do about that.

As governor, I was the first governor to form a climate change sub-cabinet to start dealing with the impacts. We’ve got to reduce emissions. John McCain is right there with an “all of the above” approach to deal with climate change impacts.

Hmmm. Wouldn’t suggesting to reduce emissions to solve the problem imply that it is a man-made problem?

Reading her words is even more confusing than hearing them and good grief that was confusing enough.

Angryxer – you know what was off putting about this video from Keith Olbermann for me? All the doggone it type stuff. And if it was that offputting to us who kinda are on his side, imagine for a moment how offputting the folksy must be for people who are kinda on the side of Palin who are trying to listen to whatever it is she is trying to say.

I think the folksy act is brilliant for making people who may have originally liked her turn to disliking her.

I am glad for Keith Olbermann and his passionate indignation. I think part of the reason he’s not as tight as usual is because he’s spitting mad. It’s time for reporters to shed the mantle of false objectivity and to start truth-digging again.

I think it was Campbell Brown who said (and I paraphrase), “Candidate A says it’s sunny. Candidate B says it’s rainy. If I know it’s sunny, I’m not going to give equal value to what Candidate B says.”

We on the left need a wider range of voices, including the righteous indignation shown by Keith.

I’m a bit depressed at how rapidly the hate is rising. Listening to Keith (and now, Rachel Maddow, on-line because I don’t have cable) is one of the antidotes. As well as Jon Stewart. And Bill Maher. Must also check out what Margaret Cho is saying.

Laughter, as well as the uplifting messages on this board, in addition to reading rational discourse (sprinkled with my friends talking me down) are all needed to get through this month. Keep up the good work.

I’m from Finland, living in Alaska and find myself reading this excellent blog on a daily basis. Before I’ve only read the fantastic writings of AKMuckraker and others with much interest, but now I feel forced to speak out to correct something that hits too close to home.

Spoon Archer Hussein Palin @ (20:41:18) said: “When Nazi Germany invaded Finland and forced every jew to wear identifying stars, the king of Finland sewed one on himself and much of the rest of the country followed suit.”

You must be confusing Finland with some other country (Denmark?!?). We were never really “invaded” by Nazi Germany, since we were initially forced to be allied with them to protect ourselves from hungry Russia; we barely have any Jewish population; and we never had a king (though one was initially selected after our independence from Russia, he never got to serve).

However I do get the point of solidarity you were making. Growing up with my grandmother who went through two wars against Russia, I truly know what it means to “actually SEE Russia” from home. As long as my grandmother lived (bless her soul), she never seized to prepare for another Russian invasion, continuously stacking up on supplies and saving disposable containers to use in the event of a disaster.

I find Sarah Palin not only ignorant, offensive and way out of her league, but also very dangerous if she ever makes it to that coveted VP position. She truly has no idea what it means to be a small country fearing for their independence in the world of today. Finland has come a long way since our last war (1945), but only because of moderate politicians who knew to deal wisely with foreign powers such as Russia. I am not a US citizen and hence not allowed to vote, but I truly hope the people of THIS great country have the power and the understanding to do the right thing. Elect Barack Obama, not only for the good of all Americans, but also for the rest of the world.

Keep up the good work everyone and let the truth be told!

In any case, I have really enjoyed watching Keith and can’t wait for election night.

Also, I started reading this blog early on Monday morning and I really enjoyed reading the various articles that members have posted, particularly the one on McCain.

=====================================
Pursang, I’m with you. I can’t fathom why the press would tolerate this. They are being used for propoganda purposes. “You can record the event, but you can’t speak with the candidate or anyone in attendance. We’re not going to let you do your job.” If they’re not permitted to do their job, why do they go? Some paper or media outlet should do what CNN did. Pack up and go. See how fast the McCain campaign would come running after them.

Walter Lippmann, the 20th-century American columnist, wrote, “A free press is not a privilege, but an organic necessity in a great society.” Indeed, as society has grown increasingly complex, people rely more and more on newspapers, radio, and television to keep abreast with world news, opinion, and political ideas. One sign of the importance of a free press is that when antidemocratic forces take over a country, their first act is often to muzzle the press.

They’re muzzling the press, folks. The handwriting is on the wall. Read it.

Hiya, Snoskred @ 22:36: I hope you’re right! There certainly has been anecdotal evidence flying around that erstwhile Palin supporters were turned off by Palin’s debate performance– gushing conservative male dolts like Kristol and Lowry about her “success” notwithstanding.

asiangrrlMN (22:37:40): (yay MN! I used to live there) Actually, I can’t think of greater passionate indignation than Keith-O’s slapdown of Bush a couple months ago or his recent 9/11-trademark comment, when his passion was so fierce and precise it compacted coal into diamonds. As I said earlier– I love his attitude in general, and I’m unendingly grateful to finally have some voices speaking up on the left, which are such an essential corrective to the b.s. of Faux News and the wimpiness of the MSM. But Keith still sometimes swings too wild, in my opinion, which loses more moderate thinkers than he might otherwise gain. Which is why I’m so grateful for the rest of my nightly lineup of Maddow, Colbert, & Stewart– between them, you’re pretty well guaranteed at least one home run each night.

I’m sure Obama will manage to keep his cool; I’ll be lining up my popcorn and waiting for McCain to lose his temper or bust a blood vessel trying not to. After his conspicuous refusal to look at Obama during the last debate, you have to wonder what McCain can manage. The man has so little self-control and zero grace.

i googled the norwegian story and it seems to be true so far – here’s the link (untranslated):

http://www.vg.no/nyheter/utenriks/presidentvalg-2008/artikkel.php?artid=527005

here’s the translated version:

This is not a big or important story. But it is a nice story and if one is voting for a person, and not just for a political platform, it might be interesting to hear it. Somehow I don’t see this story being covered in American media much, so let’s count this as one blogger’s contribution to the news coverage of the 2008 election. 🙂

Noting Palin’s spill from the debate, ” Joe Six Pack Hockey Moms” gives me a mental picture of a bunch of drunk moms driving their kids to after school activities. This is a very irresponsible way to appeal to the average american as the entire country is now engaged in a war against drunk drivers and teen alcohol abuse. I think Palin should consider how any victims of drunk driver’s or teen alcohol abuse deaths feel about her loose analogy of Joe Six Pack being the average American.

On the sheriff in Ft. Meyers Florida. Man is a totally non-professional idiot.
Should be sanctioned by somebody who has the power to do so.

If they think it will increase ratings SNL will put Caribou Barbie on the show. However, it is beyond me, since she has refused to be interviewed by just about anybody, and everybody, — why do they continue to give her air time, when she does these stupid KKK-like rallies?

I just wonder if the people of Florida are upset re the cop wearing his uniform when he introduced Palin.

Around here, you could not do that….by wearing the uniform, you are representing your job, in this case the sheriff office…which is paid for by taxpayers…all of them

Kieth was awesome last night!

Comments have been great.

Regarding Sheriff Mike Scott at the rally. It was really frightening to me as I saw an SS officer, with hand raised, rallying a white German croud to kill jews.

Sarah Palin has gone too far now. She and McCain are preaching hate and racism. I am sick about this.

And I am sad for you Alaska. For your glorious state is being shredded, not by the freedom brought to us by Ben Franklin’s printing press but by a group of very sick Republicans. Lady Liberty is crying today for Alaska.

She see’s that not only are Alaskans going to pay their share for the economic mess the Republican trickle down policies have brought on our nation. But now, thanks to Sarah Palin and her campaign of hate and smear politics, Alaskan’s are going to feel the financial pain as the rest of the citizens of our nation begin to “Say NO to Alaska”. We Americans are getting an impression that if Alaskans accept geniuses like Sarah Palin that preach hate, racism and destruction of the environment, the majority of true Americans, like myself, will see this for what it is. Gov. Palin has done more economic damage to your state in the past 2 weeks than any terrorist bomb could ever do.

If I were you, I would be very pissed right now. With her George Wallace attitude the call to Boycott Alaska will be coming very soon.

As your state darkens for the season, the darkness of division by Palin will cost you dearly. Tourism, trade, and jobs, already feeling the hit because of Palin’s smear and hate speeches. I am afraid Alaska’s upcoming depression will continue for a decade as you try to rebuild your states tattered reputation.

I pray, I am wrong, for you, my mudflat friends.

Most Americans would hold Alaska responsible for the ignorance of Sarah Palin. Just like most Americans would not hold Obama for the responsibility of Ayers.

We hold John McCain responsible for Sarah Palin. We simply can’t afford to have those two lunatics anywhere near the White House unless they are only visiting.

I meant – most Americans would NOT hold Alaska responsible for the ignorance of Sarah Palin.

knikgoose HUSSEIN!!

Shikago:

No one holds Alaska responsible for Palin.
It will have zero to a positive affect on tourism, no effect on trade (unless it was a negative or corrupt practice or principle that allowed that trade before). And jobs? Have you ever been to Alaska?
I would say that it might cause a number of elected officials and people in position of making right or wrong (meaning lawful or unlawful) decisions to keep their noses clean(er) than in the past, but the average Alaskan will actually be free to believe that the transparency in politics they’ve heard about, has finally arrived.
For now.

Did you know that January 27 is his birthday, and he will be turning the big 5-0 this year. Hope we can give him a nice early birthday present – say, an Obama inauguration ceremony on January 20 !

538.com has it 345 – 193 for Obama

electoral-vote.com has it 349 – 174 (NC still tied 15 votes)

SHIKAGO—you are soooooooo right. The police officer did look like an SS Officer from the Gestapo in Germany. Or the KGB in Russia. I was a very young girl during WWII, and I remember. This police officer who was dressed in UNIFORM should be fired. A uniformed officer is ON DUTY. He is paid by the taxpayers——all the taxpayers.
I can’t wait for the debate tonight. I pray that Obama does well. I can already see McCain’s face get red, and fire shooting out of his eyes and mouth.

ALASKA’S Governor Palin speaking in Florida, tapes playing on MSNBC, again, 10th time today, few minutes ago, her supporters shouting “KILL HIM” and “TERRORIST” another supporter turns to a black reporter yells “SIT DOWN BOY”.

This is sad. . . but “a positive” ?

Sorry, I disagree, I think we are all responsible.

This Sheriff that looked like a Gestapo officer yesterday (Jim Coats) seems to be a clone of Sarah Palin. Check out this article from last month regarding Coats and an employee he fired. Eerie how similar it is to Troopergate.

No Free Speech At Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office
Posted on Sunday, 7 of September , 2008 at 11:22 am

PINELLAS COUNTY—Apparently the sheriff and chief deputy of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Department need an introduction to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

You know, the one that guarantees freedom of speech.

Ever been accused of being too blunt, of speaking your mind too honestly?

Pinellas County detention deputy George Loeffler posted a message on the “Ask The Executive Staff” portion of the department’s intranet site and got fired for expressing his opinion.

Loeffler, who thought he was expressing his opinion anonymously found himself fingered by his IP number after sheriff Jim Coats and chief deputy Robert Gualtieri in particular were angered that they had been called liars. Gualtieri ordered the department’s technology people to determine the identity of the poster which was done by IP numbers. As a result of an internal affairs investigation, Loeffler was deemed insubordinate.

Gualtieri is also the department’s attorney.

In a sheriff’s memorandum released last week, it was announced that Loeffler had resigned but said if he had not, he would have been fired for making alleged defamatory remarks about Coats and Gualtieri.

Loeffler posted his comment on the department’s intranet site after he became aware of media reports that said there would be no further layoffs. He wrote, “Sheriff Coats, one thing I have learned from you and the chief deputy is that if your lips are moving you are lying. You may be able to pull the wool over the general public, but those of us who work in this agency know you for what you are”.

Management claims that there will be no more layoffs.

Unfortunately for Loeffler, he chose to express his opinion about management while he was on duty on July 25. The big boys claimed their feelings were hurt because Loeffler called them liars, stating in their memo that “the significance of the potential damage, caused by that message, to the morale and well-being of the members of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office cannot be overstated, particularly in light of the fact that the basis of the content of the message was inaccurate”.

Perhaps Coats and Gualtieri need to grow up.

Most at-will employees can be fired for complaining in public about their boss or workplace as long as the termination isn’t related to the employee’s race, faith, union activities or such. But employees of the government, such as the sheriff’s office are protected by the First Amendment.

In the case of Leoffler, his criticism wasn’t public, it was aimed directly at the “executives” and done anonymously on a feedback form available to only a few.

The Supreme Court has upheld an employee’s right to criticism in such cases as Pickering v. Board of Education in which a public school teacher was reinstated after being fired for writing a critical letter to the editor about the board of education, her employer.

Jonathan Zittrain, a professor at Harvard Law School has explained that “speech is protected from government censorship, not private censorship”. 9-7-08

Keith’s a personal hero of mine. He kept me and my partner sane during the final throes of the Bush/Cheney debacle. He isn’t afraid to be partisan, and I appreciate that, because sometimes there is no way to be fair and balanced when one side is lying through their teeth.

Check out Rachel Maddow’s show, too, for a sane version of reality.

Alaska use to seem so remote from FL. Now whenever I log on here, I feel like we’re just neighbors conversing in our backyards across the fence. Thank you for welcoming me and for everything you do!

I was deeply ashamed and disheartened by the actions of my fellow Floridians attending the Palin rally. And mostly frightened by the careless, hate inciting words of SP and Sheriff Lee Coats. Not sure about the link below, but PJ your hubby will most likely know if this is fact. Please forgive it someone posted this previously, I did not see it.

If anybody watched Keith’s show at 8 pm EST, you can hear some of the comments that the people at a few of the rally’s that Mrs. Palin has been at. One of them included somebody saying “Kill him” in regards to Mr. Obama.

As a result of the comment being mentioned in the Washington Post, the Secret Service is now investigating. I would think 40 years after the death of Robert F. Kennedy after a rally in California, that people would use their words better.

Wow, how good it felt to come to this site after listening to part of Palin’s speech in Florida…I was ill at the comments on “go Sarah, go” and the absolute idiot mentality that I am seeing in people who support the McCain/Palin ticket.

I have to ask, since I still don’t understand — why is it that having a smart man, “professorial”, or whatever else they want to call him is such a bad thing? Do the Americans want to look like idiots after an 8-year Bush regime where our President can’t even speak properly? Oh, and by the way, idiot Palin (like idiot Bush) can’t speak either — forget the winks and nods and “folksiness”…can’t even say NUCLEAR…just like our current President. Maybe it’s just me, but speaking properly, having an air of grace and distinction and being SMART are everything I want to see in a leader!!!

Anyway, need to get that out since I was on another site where they seem to love Palin and I couldn’t deal! Keith O. rocks though and again, so thankful for finding this site!!!

btw…if anyone wants a real kick — the Daily Dish has a new Obama “pin” — totally puts a new spin on a comment made during the debate today…worth looking at! Love, love the fact that this was turned around within minutes to make sure McCain looked like an a$$!

Way to go Gary Shikago (10:57). Way to go Keith! Someone who speaks the truth about Sarah Pahlin. She and John McCain are inciting hatred behavior and the hate mongers performances should be held accountable. Inciting behavior that leads to the screaming of terrorist and kill at their rallies is not what this country needs. Unity is what it needs. Their campaigning is embarrassing to the US and all of politics. Sarah Pahlin does not have the class or intellect to be a Vice President or Governor. She is living off all the attention she has received because she was a no name and people wanted to know who she was. She also is getting attention from the snippy remarks she makes because she doesn’t have the answers to questions unless she’s coached. Sarah should have seen Michelle Obama’s interview on Larry King Live Wednesday. That was class. Sarah Pahlin and John McCain, take your toys and go HOME. We don’t need you in Washington or any where in government with your hate attitudes. I have heard nothing but bashing of Obama and nothing about what you could do for the middle class who are suffering. I don’t have any respect for either one. When this is all done and over, we still all have to work together to over come this crisis that those in the current administration have created. No more George Bush tactics or policies. McCain — lets hear you talk about your involvment in the Keating Five Scandal. That’s credible behavior??!
