Wow, AKM you are always on top of everything. I’m really looking forward to the next debate. See you there. Sleep well, dear friend.

g’night AKM, and Brian too.

I’m a bit sad as I am out of town for work the next four days…may not be able to log on to Mudflats. It would be the first day or days since the RNC crazy show introducing swwnbn.

A little anxious, but still may be able to find an Internet connection. Ugh.

Thank you for everything, and the FAQ page is very good (poopie trolls).

Love ya Mudpuppies! (and AKM and Brian😉

Back on Troopergate.
I would imagine it will be hard for Palin to deny her involvement since she got Wooten the Trooper job in the first place.

“Palin didn’t always regard Wooten as a bad guy. NEWSWEEK has obtained a reference letter she wrote for Wooten in January 2000. She described his good works as a volunteer in local police and youth auxiliary programs, including a stint as a football coach for 7- to 9-year-olds: “I have witnessed Mike’s gift of calm and kindness toward many young kids here in Wasilla. I have never seen him raise his voice, nor lose patience, nor become aggitated [sic] in the presence of any child.” She called him a “fine role model.”
source: newsweek:
http://news.uk.msn.com/newsweek.aspx?cp-documentid=9496086

With Palin’s reference and other recommendations, Wooten got a job as a state trooper. The following year, he married Palin’s sister Molly.”

So, is he a “fine role-model” or a monster, SP?

I think Todd reappeared early , at SP’s request/orders, to help make those subpoenaed “lose their memories”. You must remember, Todd followed Wooten around with a camera to disprove his insurance claims, and has no problem putting pressure on public officials to do his wife’s bidding. He seems to think he’s ‘untouchable’.

While Alaska was busy with rallies, I thought I’d let you know that the other 49 states have been busy, too.

For example, hundreds of demonstrators rallied in California when Sarah Palin spoke at a fundraiser on October 5th. Check out the following link for a brief write-up — and make sure to click on the photo links on that page (the photos were great):

Hi everyone,

I know this is a little off-topic for this blog, but thought you might find it interesting. “This American Life” (National Public Radio show for those of you not in the US) did a segment this weekend explaining the financial crisis and the bailout. Really excellent info! You can listen here:

I posted this “story” at the end of a thread yesterday (before I realized almost everyone else had moved-on to a new thread), so if it seems familiar, that’ why. I am still trying to understand why some feel so drawn to the irreverent, self-proclaimed Pitbull. I just can’t seem to let this go.

I had a conversation about Palin with my REPUBLICAN brother-in-law today…Grrr! He actually started the conversation, to goad me I believe. But that’s okay as I always want to know what the opposition is thinking.

After some initial chatter about our differing perceptions of what was or wasn’t said in last week’s debate, yada, yada. I asked him what he thought of Palin. “SARAH – OUR SARAH?” he responded with the biggest grin I have ever seen on his face. “I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT HER! I LOVE THE WAY SHE DRESSES AND THE WAY SHE TALKS AND WALKS! – AND WHEN SHE WINKED AT THE AUDIENCE I GOT THE BIGGEST BONER I HAVE HAD IN YEARS!” (and this guy is almost 70 years old!) If you’re puking by now…sorry! My fingers feel dirty writing this.

However, after he calmed himself (down boy! down boy! – he was like a male pitbull chasing a bitch in heat…sorry!), has said he was ready for McCain and SARAH to bring out their big guns and get folks all stirred-up about “scary”, Black Obama…he went on and on – you all know their talking points, so I’ll stop rambling.

My point is simply this, there are many people in our country who want McCain to win and they want him to win AT ALL COSTS. There was no talking to him about intellect, substance, the state of the economy, health care, war policies, taxes – “I DON’T CARE!” – was his rebuttal to every substantive issue I brought up in our combative, but relatively civil conversation…

He also assured me of one other FACT as he left – “If SARAH doesn’t win with McCain, THIS BABE will be back running for president in 2012!” Now, there’s a truly scary thought for you to ponder.

I think we need to satirize the McCain Palin slander machine. With that in mind
I am introducing the world to McBluff the Slime Dog. The character is a modified composite of the Palin Pit Bull Campaign Button and McGruff. The jpg is at:
[http://www.flickr.com/photos/31142893@N02/2916505689/]

If we can make them look as silly as we think they are it should help defuse their message. Does any one else have satirical images or messages that we can get out. They might be helpful to sign makers at future rallies.

In regards to the California fundraiser that Sarah Palin spoke at today, I laughed out loud when I read the following comment on the SFGate website:

“I love the Republicans. How many ‘Joe Six Packs’ were at that $1,000 a head Palin fundraiser in Burlingame? ‘McCain-Palin: Leave No Wall Street Lobbyist Behind.'”

Yes, indeed. I wonder how many Joe Six-Packs and Jane Six-Packs were at today’s fundraiser? My guess is not many. 😉

By the way, according to Reuters, Sarah Palin stated the following during her speech:

“‘They are also building schools for the Afghan children so that there is hope and opportunity in our neighboring country of Afghanistan,’ she told several hundred supporters at a fundraising event in San Francisco.”

So, my fellow Mudflatters, can you see Afghanistan from Alaska just like you can see Russia? It certainly sounds that way.

AnneinWA (00:09:30) :

Did you ask if he was off his meds?

It sounds like he has a serious case of cognitive dissonance. This is the same problem McCain has. The desire to win and the obvious lack of qualification of their candidate are creating extreme stress. The only way they have of coping is to form fantastic images of what might be. There will always be a hard core that thinks that way. However most people will have trouble reconciling the idea of McCain with thoughtful leadership in a time of economic crisis. He has never claimed to be a cool headed thoughtful leader – though he is a self-professed gambler, a crap shooter in fact. That and raging hormones may appeal to your brother-in-law, but I think you don’t have to worry about most people.

“With Palin’s reference and other recommendations, Wooten got a job as a state trooper. The following year, he married Palin’s sister Molly.”

So… Palin’s sister’s BF needed a good job so they could get married, so he’s a ‘fine role model’ . When her sisters marriage breaks up and she wants the kids all to herself, he morphs into a monster who must be forced into penury.

And I bet she feels entirely justified; doesn’t get what the fuss is all about.

Well, its because we don’t want the Second Family to resemble the plot of the Sopranos

Okay, maybe I’m late, but there IS another investigation, by the police officers union, for illegally accessing Wooten’s file: (?)

So, does that mean there are 2 , – or 3?

My favourite part of the divorce is Sarah often quoting Wooten’s multiple marriages as in indication of his “instability” – and she never says a world about the sister’s multiple marriages.

Trash.

6 10 2008
Aussie Puck Mule Revlon Red Palin

@knikgoose (00:58:52) :

The article is wrong in one respect. Todd Palin did not get that info from the divorce records, because Wooten’s medical and financial records weren’t filed because there was a negotiated settlement of the case.

The Palins tried to claim they got the info from the court documents and now that it’s been proved they clearly did not, Sarah is claiming that as governor she can see any old body’s personnel file if they work for the state.

Wrong again, but is that really a suprise?😉

Sean Hannity creaps me. I avoid Fox at all costs. I recognise the language he speaks.

I grew up in Africa. Some African states were more racist than others but most had some form of segregation at some stage of their history. Racism melted away with each generation and today a couple of generations on most children are colour blind….yay…nice ! (*here in Aus we say colour not color)

In saying that, there was a time that some people spoke in a ‘certain’ way, it was like a rascist/prejudice ‘code’. It was not ‘what’ you said but ‘how’ you said it.

When I hear the way that SP and McCain (and that over ambitious Hannity) ‘mock’ Obama personally or what he has achieved (community organiser=look down on) or who he ‘pals up to (terrorist=fear)…elitist (not in MY neighbourhood) I hear the same code. It is subliminal but it is there and I get so angry.

I also have a feeling that this is why McC/Palin are now playing so dirty.
They HAVE to win. They do not want to go down in history as losing to ‘THAT’ man. (psst…you hear the code?)

Regarding Palin’s hiring/firing of Wooten — I have a sister who years ago got mixed up with an abusive man. At the beginning of their relationship, there was no outward sign of his dark side (indeed, if there had been ANY sign, I’m sure she would have run for the hills), but some months in he became a very scary character.

I am willing to believe that Palin helped get Wooten hired in good faith. He sounds like a jerk, so I also understand her desire to protect her sister.

If she had committed some mild impropriety, fessed up right away and said it was to “protect her own,” I expect most people would give her a pass on it.

So to my mind, the real issue isn’t whether she helped get Wooten a job years ago. It’s that all of the stonewalling and legal shenanigans make me think there’s something bigger to hide….

I’m sick at heart listening to Sarah Palin saying “It’s time the American people learned what kind of person Barack Obama is.” While I agree with her (!) I’m pretty sure we mean very different things. The only silver lining in this is that McCain has a past, and it’s going to get brought up. Time to amp up the AIP stuff as well. At least Obama’s going to bring up the Keating Savings and Loan stuff, (as opposed to personal things), which many people will see as pretty relevant to the current debacle.

This is going to hurt Barack. Both the campaign against him, and, I suspect, the (necessary) counterattacks against McCain. 4 weeks is a very long time.

6 10 2008
SC Strike Chipper Palin

Lots of interesting stuff here. The subject of dirty tricks and win at ANY cost is fresh in my mind, having seen a very interesting movie yesterday. It was “Boogieman: The Lee Atwater Story” and was both horrifying and informative. This is the man who turned dirty tricks (and outright lies) into a Republican art form, after all (though with him gone, they’re not as efficient at it–and thank God for that) and I think was at the beginning of turning politics in this country into something highly contentious and divisive, as opposed to the simple disagreement over issues that it used to be.
I highly recommend it to anyone who has any interest in national politics. It’s kind of important to remember this part of the past…

WASHINGTON – The Republican National Committee plans to file a fundraising complaint against Democrat Barack Obama’s presidential campaign Monday, alleging it has accepted donations that exceed federal limits as well as illegal contributions from foreigners.

RNC officials acknowledged Sunday that they do not have a list of foreign donors to Obama’s campaign. Instead, the complaint is based largely on media reports, including one from the conservative Web site Newsmax

I have just about had it with Caribou Barbie and her puppet smears of Obama.
Joe Biden should come out with the fact that McCain’s chief of staff/lobbist was paid $2million by Fannie and Freddie for access to McCain and to stop regulation of the banking industry. Senator McCain’s campaign manager was paid more than $30,000 a month for five years as president of a group set up ty the mortgage giants against stricter regulations. —-to read more about this you can go to:
http://www.americablog.com/2008/09/nyt-macain-chief-of-stafflobbyist-was.html
Joe could also throw in the Keating 5 story. If I remember—wife Cindy’s father was in this in someway, but can’t remember the details. But I am sure one can find more about it on the internet.
I can’t wait until Tues for the next debate. I can just see “chipmonk” getting sooooooo angry. Fire will come out of his nose. Obama and Biden don’t have to make-up stories—-all they have to do is report the true facts.
I will be thinking of all you great people in Alaska–it make me smile when I see the pictures of the EMPTY chairs at the rally for Mccain/Palin this past Sat. I still think there should be big black ribbons tied on all the chairs. Maybe a wreath of dead flowers with a big black bow.

There was a link some days ago regarding why people don’t vote in their own best interest. I meant to bookmark it but forgot. It had to do with upbringing, insecurities & fear of change etc….it’s not rational. It seems like since they unleashed Palin after the debate the mood has been very edgy. I remember just before Bush was elected there were psychological profiles of him (Vanity Fair) & what an angry man he was. His behavior seemed bizarre & hostile and it has spread like the flu. Once again we have a candidate who seems to be bringing out the worst in America. Obama/Biden want to talk issues…McCain/Palin don’t…..they really have little to offer main stream America sooooooo smear tactics, racism etc. will be the flavor of the month.

Good morning mudpuppies

Here is one funny thing that happened to me on friday [day after the VP debate ofcourse]

I was interviewing one candidate for the job and he actually stopped by at my office just before we led him to conference room [he must have seen my Obama/Biden button on the wall]

At the end of 3 hour interview : at which point he almost knew he had got the job considering it was his 2nd interview and he really was a good candidate – I asked him something about the technology that was listed as ‘Plus to know — technology’ in job posting. He didn’t know about it and here is what he said

‘Can I pull Sarah Palin on you and explain you something in different technology [the one which was primary focus of the interview]’

and I could not stop laughing. He said, usually I would never bring politics in interview but couldnt help after seeing Obama/Biden button in your office.

Good Morning, Mudpuppies.

I came here for my daily therapy. Sarah gave a big rally in Clearwater, FL and she hit all the base points to a loud cheering crowd and I’m getting depressed:
– Obama will raise your taxes (debunked)
– He voted to raise taxes 94 times (debunked)
– He voted to raise taxes on the middle class (debunked)
– His economic plan will add up to $1 trillion and new spending and hasn’t yet explained how he’s going to pay for those programs (LIE!)
– He started his political career in the living room of a domestic terrorist and those are the folks with whom he associates himself (debunked nasty LIE!)

So to rehash it, but I needed to vent. Also, I’m sorry to be using such good grammar. Her speech sounded like, well, you know what she sounds like…

I’m sick to the back teeth of this woman. Now Obama’s firing back with Keating 5, but I’m not so sure that’s going to work. She’s got a pretty big mouth and she’s spreading her filth all across the country. Obama’s too polite. He’s putting his true, but bad, story about McCain on a Web site and wants us to email it. I will, but I feel so helpless.

You guys up in Alaska are really doing great. I wish we had organizers like you down here.

Growing up in the South, during the 50’s and 60’s as an African American, you learn the unspoken (and spoken) nuance as a matter of survival.

The appeal to fears and prejudices (wink, wink) that SLOWLY being put to rest is saddening at best.

I just listened to SWWNBN speak in Clearwater, FL. The codespeak was deep. We should be hopeful but we must keep out guard up as this is going to get a LOT worse and the response to this negative stuff is going to appeal far more than those of us here would ever expect. And that is sad. For us. For our country. FOr the world.

Hopefully others will get the TRUTHFUL counter messages out there while Obama stays on the REAL issues that we need to discuss.

Good Morning Mudpals! I need your creative help….I am going to the Palin protest in Boca Raton, Florida today and I cannot decide on what to put on my sign. I think I will make a few just in case someone needs one so let’s shoot for the top four. I was thinking “Americans cannot afford 4 more years of McBush”. I know it is lame but remember that in Boca Raton, a lot of wealthy jews are feeling the pain and it is what gets their attention. Grammy,
I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have shared. I’m just so distraught after seeing it. They’re playing all of her rallies live on all the networks.

I don’t understand. She won’t give the media any face time, but they give her all this free advertising and cover all of her rallies live from start to finish. If I were the press, I’d say, “No interviews, no coverage”. Plus she’s insulting the media at every rally, but they still cover her.

The McCain campaign with it’s suppression of the media and voter suppression and caging in minority populations in swing states shows a complete disdain for democracy.

I hope Obama knocks McCain’s dick in the dirt tomorrow night. Excuse that rude comment, but I’m am madder than a wet hen!

Two things today,

Sarah came out bashing Obama for his relationship to Rev. Wright….should be a blistering backlash for her.

And this from the SF Chronicle…Monegan still got the kids, so the story obviously should care not weight.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~The San Francisco Chronicle —
“North to Alaska: It turns out that well before he was jettisoned for what he says was his refusal to fire trooper Wooten at the behest of Sarah Palin, Monegan had his own share of domestic troubles – some of them spilling all the way down to the Bay Area.
“In October 1994, Monegan’s estranged wife, who had moved from Alaska to the Peninsula with the couple’s two daughters after more than 10 years of marriage, sought a temporary restraining order against him — accusing Monegan of threatening to kill her, waving a gun at her and dislocating her shoulder, (emphasis added) according to her declaration on file in Santa Clara County Superior Court.
“In an interview last week, Georgene Moldovan said Monegan had threatened several times to throw her body in an Alaska river.
“Monegan, 57, who has since remarried, vigorously denied Moldovan’s allegations, both in court papers filed at the time and in an interview with us last week. “I’m not a door slammer – I don’t punch walls,” he said.
“Monegan admitted to dislocating Moldovan’s shoulder, but said it was an accident that had happened before they were married, while they “were wrestling and tickling.”
I wonder if this woman, Georgene Moldovan, knows Sarah Palin or has a vested interest to make these statements. If Monehan has custody of the children and has threatened to murder his ex-wife, something this wrong here.
Also, the McCain campaign has been smearing Monehan, who supposedly has a stellar reputation in the community and years of impeccable service.
In a lot of divorces, there are 3 sides to the story, his side, her side and the truth. It does not seem like a fit judge would grant custody or even visitation to murderous father or mother. Everyone should relax for a moment. The Palin Bump will wear off soon – it’s very unattractive except to the really base. Obama’s campaign strategy is much more sophisticated than McCain’s. Obama is focused on mobilizing support, particularly new voters. McCain is focused on heating a small hard core of zealots who crave “red meat” and on suppressing the vote from anyone else. He thinks he can capture a core group of disaffected rural white workers who have strong feelings about the second amendment. He is failing as this story indicates.
There are two areas I’d like to hear more about re: Palin.
First: A recent photo provided by her relatives showed her sitting at her desk in city council in Wasilla — reading the John Birch Society magazine. How active is JBS in Alaska/Wasilla? Is there any info on whether she has ever supported them, or they her (donations from officers, e.g., in her gubernatorial campaign?_
Also, during the hearing awhile ago done by that radio guy, someone stood up and said that Palin had done something either to change or to fail to pass updates on the residential housing code in Alaska. Around the time she was eleted, I think that the IBC was strengthened for earthquake protection. In Alaska, the state has code which I think applies if the town/city has not adopted its own. It so happens that Wasilla is located near a major active fault line that blows approximately every 700 years. Last time it blew, as I recall, was 650 years ago. That would make it important to have the strongest earthquake protection in the housing building code that you could to save lives.
The Palins have a number of real estate partnerships that are detailed in the oppo research from the gov race that was posted here a few weeks back.
Does anybody know what action on Palin’s part the speaker may have been referring to? He sounded like maybe he worked in construction or something — seemed to know what he was talking about. I tried to find info on a couple different AK government websites but didn’t figure it out. Could the action have been her general “government hands off” approach to the detriment of even Wasilla? Or could it possibly relate to her business partnerships and the cost of building? Have they sold any real estate or is it for personal use?
When tax returns come in showing they’re worth $1MM, I hardly consider the Palins “middle class”. What a dupe job.
I was wrong about Palin’s favorability rating. I thought it was -10. It’s really a –13. Ooops. My bad.
Calm down everyone. Palin is preaching to the choir. Americans who care aren’t listening to rhetoric, they are watching their 401Ks go down by the minute. They are looking for answers and most of all they are looking for hope. Palin offers neither. Instead of answers she offers retread lies and instead of hope she offers paranoia.
Americans have seen what happens when they vote the ‘fear’ ticket. They get more war, more inflation, they lose jobs and their savings and homes are threatened.
If Obama takes a dump in the polls or Palin even bring that favorability rating up to say a -9 then I’ll worry a little. But I also know the Obama is three steps ahead of everyone.
And here is one thing I heard the other day that makes a whole lot of sense. The MSM is run by corporations looking for a profit. They are looking for a ‘story’ and a ‘hook’ to keep viewers interested. A landslide for Obama in early October isn’t a good story. Therefore they will start slanting the ‘story’ towards McCain in order to hopefully tighten up the race. Palin is the only story the Repugs have that even interests people. McCain is a bitter, angry old man with nothing new to say. Palin generates “interest” aka ratings.
And for the record, Obama is sort of boring too. He just sticks to that same old message of issues that people care about – the economy, their jobs, their healthcare. Too bad for McCain, Palin and the MSM, Obama’s ‘boring’ message seems to be working. McCain is shitting moose-nuggets these days because he realizes that when the strongest weapon his campain has is Sarah Palin, he is standing in mudflats up to his waist and has no way of extricating himself.
bPoint – the tax returns are a new release and it will take a few days for cogent questions to be made by the MSM. It’s already starting to come out that her net worth of approx 1.25M is not exactly middle class. It’s already started to come out that the gross income in excess of 160k is way over the average 60k of typical Alaskan families.
What I am waiting for is some nationally recognized tax expert to come out and ask why the value of the per diems are not listed on her federal returns (not sure how Alaska’s tax code treats the per diems) as regular income due to no actual expenses being incurred. imho, she not only took taxpayer money to which she was not entitled but she also is a tax cheat for under-reporting her income.
Perhaps it’s time for Willy Nelson or Wesley Snipes to speak out about the preferential treatment she’s getting from the IRS on this. Or, perhaps all the mudflatters reading my comment can get out a postcard or lift up a telephone and drop a dime on our favoritist separatist. Given enough volume, the IRS enforcers will have no choice but to listen regardless of what their politically-appointed bosses say otherwise.
Just a note of history here.
The term Maverick was coined when Sam Maverick, a Texas cattleman, had huge herds of longhorn cattle. He did not brand them, as others did, and come roundup time, he sent his men out to gather all unbranded cattle and calves as his own. Remember there were no fences then.
So in other words, he just gathered up everything whether they belonged to him or not. In doing genealogy research many years ago, I came across a lawsuit filed by one of my ancestors agains Mr. Maverick for gathering cattle that clearly belonged to my ancestor. Maverick cherrily admitted this and gave the cattle back. No hard feelings, just taking what he could get away with – doncha know.
In those days, a maverick was not necessarily thought of as something good.
SC Torpedo,
Wow! Thank you for that article on the mine workers. The NRA is running a multimillion dollar ad campaign against Obama on radio networks in swing states, completely misrespresenting his record and downright lying through most of the ads.
The Obama campaign has contacted the radio stations and forwarded them his legislative voting records on all gun issues debunking the ads. They even offered to talk with that stations and be interviewed. Some stations are working to get both sides of the story out. Other stations are ignoring the records and the letter. For those that do, the Obama campaign has sent a cease and desist letter to stop the libel and the NRA is now claiming that “they”, not the stations, are being threatened by the Obama campaign. More lies!
Margo Howard: Palin Should Zip It
My good friend Margo–she says I shouldn’t say “old friend”–writes off and on for us. She also writes for Yahoo and Wow. Read this. I don’t have to say more.
“Loud-Mouth-and-Loose-Lipped Palin Owes Obama an Apology for This One,” by Margo Howard
Editor’s Note: A longtime journalist, Margo Howard went into the family business (her mother was the fabled Ann Landers) in the 1990s as Dear Prudence. Her broad experience and understanding of human nature provide answers for the troubled – and entertainment for everyone else. Click here to read her column on Yahoo!
I really thought I was done talking about Sarah Palin, but life is what happens when you’re making other plans. I wish there were a word that was a cross between “appalled” and “nauseated,” because that’s what the lady’s latest outburst has me feeling. Saturday evening Drudge picked up a Breitbart story where the headline was: “Palin says Obama ‘palling around’ with terrorists.” As if this weren’t bad enough, she went on to tell whatever group she was addressing: “This is not a man who sees America as you see America and as I see America.” Well, I’ll tell you what I see: a loud-mouth, loose-lipped nobody who is drunk on media attention and a quart low in the judgment department. I think both she and her aged “maverick” buddy owe Mr. Obama an apology for this one.
To live on the same street and to have served on a board with Billy Ayers, part of the Weather Underground when Obama was in grade school and now a professor, is not my idea of “palling around with.” I think this hockey mom/moose skinner fits perfectly into the class war she is helping perpetuate, even though she has none.
It would have far more factual validity for Obama, or a surrogate, to publicize the fact that Track, the kid who joined the Army, did so because a judge told him it was that or jail due to his dealing drugs. I have a strong hunch, however, the Obama people would never get into that. Up until now the lady has annoyed me because of her ignorance and arrogance, but now I am furious, especially when her headline-making remark from yesterday was that Obama was not “fit” to be commander-in chief. I think the McCain people better lock the lady up again and tell her to zip it, because she is not fit to even ad-lib.
When i travel around the internet, i’m always on the lookout for items which might be of particular interest to mudflatters.
well, this morning i hit something brand new. the article talks about palin’s time on the wasilla city council. go read the full article but here is a clip that points directly at what i think is the true character of sarah palin:
what Palin seemed to have chafed against was less the substance of Carney’s position than what she felt was his elitist, Ivy League bearing. And, over the next few years, she found ways to get him back.
These days, Palin is engaged in this same fight against elites, though on a considerably larger stage. “I’m not one of those who maybe came from a background of, you know, kids who perhaps graduate college and their parents give them a passport and give them a backpack and say go off and travel the world,” she recently told Katie Couric. “No, I’ve worked all my life.” That hardly makes her the first politician to run on class resentments–nearly every conservative from George W. Bush to Mitt Romney has sought a bond with voters by attacking the over-educated and entitled. But more often than not these conservatives are elites themselves; hence the spectacle of Yale legacies and Harvard millionaires (and most of the Fox News executive suite) railing against wine-swilling sophisticates.
Palin, by contrast, may be the first conservative politician since Nixon to experience resentment so authentically. For her, it’s not so much a political tool as a motivating principle. A trip through Palin’s past reveals that almost every step of her career can be understood as a reaction to elitist condescension–much of it in her own mind.
Based on everything I’ve seen and heard from her, she is playing the “Devils advocate” role. And as a christian, I am personally offended by her conduct.
snowbelle, you said above that wooten “sounds like a jerk.” remember the source of what you have heard and the amount of time todd and sarah and her sister and other relatives and friends and sarah’s staff have been churning out bilge so that people believe that wooten is a very bad person.
i’m not saying that he is not, i’m saying given what we know about sarah palin’s proclivity with lying, we shouldn’t simply assume that he is. in fact, the judge overseeing the child custody (which is what all this flowed from, not the divorce itself), cautioned the palins on their efforts to demonize wooten.
I read that Track had stolen booze and cut the brake lines on a bus barn full of school busses – “way back when he was 16″ – obviously a statement on parenting skills.
I am not going to blame the Palins for their son’s delinquency or daughter’s pregnancy. I have teenagers (one in the military and one who is a HS sophomore) and kids don’t always listen to their parents. I DO blame her for continuing to advocate “abstinence only” sex education, though. Obviously, it didn’t work for her own family, so why does she believe it will work for everyone else’s family as well?
Open on the PALIN residence, Wasilla, Alaska. Evening. Governor SARAH PALIN is sitting on the couch, reading “all of the magazines.” She is wearing a satin negligee and bunny slippers. Her luxurious brown hair is in a bun. Her glasses rest just so on the bridge of her nose. TODD is out of town on business. TRIGG is peacefully asleep upstairs. There is a firm knock at the door. Maybe Sarah Palin should ask herself “How would Jesus run this campaign ?”
I agree. I am not Christian, but even I know enough about Jesus to know that, even as he was being painfully killed on a cross, he said, “Forgive them. They know not what they do.” He preached peace and forgiveness to the bitter end. Unlike the God we Jews are stuck with, Jesus was not a vengeful guy. I believe he would be appalled by what is going down “in his name.”
I wasn’t aware that Bristol dropped out. I do worry about the educations of Willow and Piper, as they are currently “on the road” with mom. Granted, I can also see the flip side, at least for Willow…this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for her, and if she can do her schooling online for a few months, the life experience she gains may well exceed the classroom experience. For Piper, though, should stay in school. Her grandparents could keep her if Todd needs to be on the road with Sarah.
It is my understanding that Malia and Sasha are in their same school in Chicago, because the Obamas decided to allow their daughters to continue as close to a normal life as possible. Malia especially is at an age in which friends are very important.
BINGO. She is probably the greatest package of psychopathology in American politics since, well, George Bush. McPOW is morphing fast too. Grievance in a politician involved the undoing of LBJ and Nixon. When it is full blown it can destroy a nation. Ask the Germans. The danger of Palin is not she herself. The danger is when a sociopath finds a political resonance of grievance amid a population in a society. She, herself, is dangerous because she has no self knowledge. She is a demagogue. A very stupid one. Such people are very dangerous in politics. I am pleading with people to read Robert G.L. Waite’s book “The Psychopathic God.” You must be sure your children and grandchildren read it as citizens of the United States. What happened in Germany must never be allowed to happen here wrapped in a flag tied with a bow of Christian fundamentalism. We are living amid a population of idiots. We must all speak out. Now. aka Klomp Molen Palin from Holland
Today in Dutch newspaper ‘de Volkskrant’:
Readers Digest asked their readers all over the world in a poll whom they would choose as POTUS. The result: Obama is favourite, except in the US.
Netherlands: Obama >90%
Germany: Obama 85%
France and Spain: Obama 75%
Russia: Obama 52%
Taiwan: Obama 94%
India: Obama 74%
South-Africa: Obama 74%
USA: McCain 38%, Obama 36%
By the way, in the Netherlands Readers Digest is typically a magazine you will read while waiting for your appointment at the dentist’s. I’m not sure how the readers population should be characterized. I would expect relatively many ‘Republicans’ among Dutch readers of this magazine. So, even knowing Obama is popular here, the incredibly high percentages outside US are pretty amazing to me.
“He also assured me of one other FACT as he left – “If SARAH doesn’t win with McCain, THIS BABE will be back running for president in 2012!” Now, there’s a truly scary thought for you to ponder.”
Here’s what a conservative (CONSERVATIVE!) expert has to say about that:
“Barring some truly bizarre changes over the next four weeks, Palin will be the losing VP nominee, and even if a losing VP nominee later comes back in another election to capture the presidential nomination he almost never wins the general election. Most of the time, the losing VP candidate never wins the nomination in his own right and some never bother to make the attempt. Dole, Mondale, Quayle, Lieberman, and Edwards are all cautionary tales of what happens to losing VP candidates who don’t know that they should have stayed away from the campaign trail. Quayle at least saved himself the embarrassment of primary defeats by having to withdraw so early in the 1999-2000 cycle for lack of any funding. Unless we think that Palin is going to break a rule that only FDR has broken, her national political future with respect to presidential politics should come to an abrupt end next month. No one, least of all her die-hard admirers, wants to see her celebrating a three-way tie for third place in New Hampshire. ”
In response to Coalfire, Steph and others above.
Track Palin, when he was 17, along with 3 or 4 other juveniles, was implicated not in cutting brake lines, but in deflating tires and disconnecting the block heaters on school buses at the Mat-Su Borough garage, then shoplifting a bottle of vodka from a local liquor store. For you flatlanders, block heaters are plug-ins that keep the engine warm so it will start in extremely cold weather. I say “implicated” carefully, as the matter was confidentially handled in juvenile court and the particulars, including the identity of the juveniles (Palin included), was not publicly disclosed. The story is that the judge strongly “recommended” that Track get his life straight by joining the military, or else face detention at the Alaska juvenile facility. I agree with those who say that the sins of the child cannot be entirely imputed to the parents … but there sure is a pattern here.
Re: Track and his delinquent ways. It’s no excuse, but honestly–can’t imagine what I’d do if Saracuda was my mother. It’s kind of hard to blame any of the kids for “acting out” in that family environment. The degree seems extreme, until I imagine living there…
Considering that Obama’s “terrorist friend” was doing his illegal stuff around the time that Barack was in grade school, I don’t really see the relevance. As I understand it, he’s been doing pretty good work in the field of education for at least the past 20 years or so. Is he not allowed to rehabilitate himself? Atone for past mistakes? Earn forgiveness? I thought those were Christian values.
That said, Obama does need to refute (doesn’t matter HOW so much) any smears they direct his way. If they are heard enough, they become true in the minds of many. I meet people, daily, who still believe that he is Muslim–as if that is relevant–and that is one of their tactics. Fear is their best weapon.
Alaska — please take your governor back! (Well I know Mudflatters don’t want her back – and I hope that sentiment is spreading fast around the state). This Ayers crap is the final disgusting outcome of the Republican’s use of her as a hybrid Caribou Barbie/Chatty Cathy doll. Insert recorded messages in her head, pull the cord, and she’ll spit the out.
An AP article today discusses how this could easily backfire on Palin (and AP has been taken to task in the past for being to the right).
Let’s hear more about the AIP! PLEASE
There is some base that is eating it up, but I really think this type of behavior will cast her in a light that won’t make a 2012 return very likely. Hopefully she won’t even be a governor by then.
What I see in my area is a depressing willingness to listen to the cr*p coming out of the McCain campaign. All the old internet smears are being brought back up and for many people who were not paying attention the first time around, these are ‘news’. OTOH, realistically it doesn’t make any difference. Although the 2nd District here in Nebraska actually has a chance to swing to Obama (go, go, go), my district is blood red and will stay that way no matter what. So a few morons more or less around here won’t hurt or help Obama either way.
As a note – a reminder that Nebraska and Maine are the only two states that allow their EC votes to be split by Cong district. Obama has paid staff in Omaha with a strong attempt to capture one EC vote here in the heart of red states. McCain is worried enough about that prospect that Palin herself actually made a stop in Omaha over the weekend.
@ UK lady AKA turning turtle Palinps
Molly is Sarah’s sister’s name. There could be another Molly but I don’t think so.
From my reading:
Trooper Wooten’s divorce from Molly began in the fall of 2005 and was finalized in January 2006. During the subsequent custody battle for the children, dirt that had been thrown at Wooten in the divorce hearing was brought back up. Everything of substance had already been examined, addressed, and resolved/disproved: the moose shooting, the taser incident, the accusation of drinking a beer on duty.
The Palins (specifically Sarah and Todd) were warned by the judge handling the custody case to back off their vindictive rehashing of trash about Wooten.
In an order signed Jan. 31, 2006, which granted Palin’s sister and Wooten a final divorce decree, Judge Suddock continued to express concern about attacks by Palin’s family on Wooten. The judge even threatened to curb Palin’s sister’s child custody rights if family criticism of Wooten continued. (from Newsweek)
I think Wooten got remarried after his divorce to Molly, and then got divorced from that new wife. But Molly’s been married at least twice herself.
It just all sounds to me like Sarah and her family live in the back woods of West Virginia, or North Carolina, or Tennessee. I can see how, for a person who had no scruples, abusing new found power would be a predictable reaction. How intoxicating it must have felt to Sarah, who had had no character-molding life experience. Whenever she’s been in a position to demonstrate good judgment or restraint (as mayor, governor), she seems to have failed badly in the basics.
Just a little curious. The issue brought up in earlier blogs about the per diem received by first dude and SP, and now their income tax returns released raises a question. First dude won the Iron Dog race in 2007 and the Governer/SP was also there in an official capacity, I presume. The tax return shows expenses for the snowmobile race as deductions and only guessing they may well have received per diem for their expenses on this trip, via Alaska Tax payers. The per diem is filed for on a public voucher and should be obtainaible as a public document, so this may be checked. If so this appears to be either a fraudulant claim on a joint tax return or a false expense requested on a public voucher.
I don’t think they can have it both ways?
now that the obama campaign has released the keating 5 film, more is being written about what happened.
i submit this for mudflatters to consider:
The Senate Ethics Committee did not pursue, for lack of jurisdiction, any possible ethics breaches in McCain’s delayed reimbursements to Keating for trips at the latter’s expense, because they occurred while McCain was in the House. The House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct said that it too lacked jurisdiction, because McCain was no longer in the House.
Got that? McCain’s ‘exoneration’ resulted from both the House and Senate claiming they had no jurisdiction to punish McCain. He dodged a bullet because of a Congressional loophole, nothing more.
This is what Republicans are calling ‘exonerated?’ Shades of OJ calling himself ‘innocent’…
“It just all sounds to me like Sarah and her family live in the back woods of West Virginia, or North Carolina, or Tennessee. I can see how, for a person who had no scruples, abusing new found power would be a predictable reaction. How intoxicating it must have felt to Sarah, who had had no character-molding life experience. Whenever she’s been in a position to demonstrate good judgment or restraint (as mayor, governor), she seems to have failed badly in the basics.”
——————————————
Excellent observation. Palin is so basic and transparent that there is nothing about her beyond a freshman psychology textbook. This is totally embarrassing for the United States in fron of the world. Come to think of it, McPOW and the Killer Chimp are also nothing more than basic dysfunctional family dynamics. Completely disturbed family dynamics. Same with Cheney. Same with Bin Laden. The fate of the world is now, once again like the 1930’s, tired to family dynamic train wrecks. When, of when, are people on this planet going to learn anything?
Yes. I am having a bad day and am depressed at the stock market after watching 60 Minutes last night. Why have people allowed themselves and their entire families to be continuously gang raped at a distance through out my entire lifetime? From Vietnam to Iraq? Why? Why? Why? Why are we such a nation of incredibly dumbed down sheep? Why?
I need a pep talk! I hope O and Joe win. But will it really change anything? Is it too late? I am pissed.
Sharon/California,
i agree with what you say with regard to palin’s potential success in 2012 or later. i would add, however, that she will have an even more difficult time given that none of the questions about her background have been answered this go-round. at least if she addressed this stuff now, she could say it was “the past,” as mccain has tried to do till now with regard to keating (see my comment above with an additional tidbit of info).
good luck to her having any political career after this, even in alaska.
my prediction is that within a year palin will be a regular commentator on fox news.
Begala noted that McCain once “sat on the board of a very right wing organization,” the U.S. Council for World Freedom, led by a retired Army Maj. General named John Singlaub. The Anti-Defamation League allegedly called the CWF’s parent organization a gathering place for racists and anti-Semites.
Said Begala: “Now, that’s not John McCain. I don’t think he is that. But, but, you know, the problem is that a lot of people know John McCain’s record better than Governor Palin, and he does not want to play guilt by association or this thing could blow up in his face.”
Other potential negative associations for McCain are his long-time South Carolina consultant, Richard Quinn, a publisher of a Southern heritagte magazine, and John Hagee, a pastor whose endorsement McCain solicited and later rejected.
Agreed. Bad vibes today. Did the Earth pass through the tail of a comet last night? Last night I had a dream something about “The Republican Party SHALL NOT RULE NOW FOR ONE HUNDRED YEARS.” But I knew that this could ONLY be if the Democratic Party started to get it right. That the corporatist hold on the government which is now becoming at the limit of pure raw fisted fascist in power MUST be broken once and for all. Otherwise a new Third Party will have to take over to restore responsible and competent (read pragmatic NOT ideological ) government IF we can survive long enough.
God do I hate Joe Lieberman. He represents everything wrong with the system. If I were Jewish I would now leave my religion and become a follower of Swedenborg. (As a very close Jewish friend of mine actually did! Wow was he happy to get out of 3,000 years of somebody else’s hand-me-down suffocating thinking. Life has gotten better and better for him over the years.)
Now back to work.
Obama is up in the polls all over. Yet, this morning Chuck todd was making the case to Joe Scarborough for McCain still winning. He was showing him how easy it would be for him to win the electoral college.
On one hand, I know the media has a vested interest in keeping interest up, by making things much closer than they really are. I am afraid of subliminal messages though. If the media tells them McCain is winning…some will be believe it.
Can you explain to me how your voting works. What is the difference between the electoral college…and the popular vote. How is it possible to win one and not the other. Its very confusing to this Canadian.
one more before i get back to work. this is from digby’s hullabaloo:
“Bold Progressives” by digby
As the exciting prospect of an Obama presidency after eight long years of Republican rule begins to look as if it might actually happen, progressives must remember the words of another Democratic president:
FDR was, of course, a consummate political leader. In one situation, a group came to him urging specific actions in support of a cause in which they deeply believed. He replied: I agree with you, I want to do it, now make me do it. He understood that a President does not rule by fiat and unilateral commands to a nation. He must build the political support that makes his decisions acceptable to our countrymen. He read the public opinion polls not to define who he was but to determine where the country was – and then to strategize how he could move the country to the objectives he thought had to be carried out.
To that end, online progressives are organizing around this concept:
Anyone with common sense will vote for Barack Obama and Democratic congressional candidates this November. But it’s time for citizens to fight back and take this pledge — will you join in signing it?
“In 2009 and beyond, I will be part of the movement that pushes Democrats to be bold progressives — and that helps pass a bold progressive agenda into law.”
It is funny that the McCain response to Obamas Keating5 ad is delivered by a lobbyist!
Tasked with defending John McCain’s past involvement in the “Keating Five” scandal, the Senator’s legal representative tried to dismiss the entire significance of what occurred some two decades ago.
Speaking to reporters on a conference call, John Dowd, a partner at the powerhouse lobbying/consulting firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, painted the Keating investigation as a “political smear job” led by Democrats who needed to make the issue a bipartisan embarrassment rather than own it themselves.
i posted a quote pulled from an article above but will reiterate here, because i don’t think it can be repeated enough:
mccain was not “exonerated” in the keating 5 scandal.
mccain’s involvement with charles keating occurred while he was in the house of representatives. by the time it was investigated, mccain was in the senate. at that point the senate said that it did not have jurisdiction to act in the matter because it happened in the house, and the house said that it did not have jurisdiction because mccain was no longer in the house of representatives.
it’s not “exoneration” when you got away with it on a technicality.
Colorado is a swing state this year. Recently the news outlets are asking people about the impact of the negative ads. By far the majority of people questioned are saying (and I’m paraphrasing now) that they don’t give a rat’s rear end about the smears. They are firmly focused on the ISSUES.
This election is different, people aren’t buying slogans alone. Of course some people will vote along party lines despite reason, but people are taking this election very seriously. Obama is smarter, more connected to the issues, and more principled. Keep the faith!
Article in New Republic, not profound or anything new to those of us that read & comment here. Little pond in Wasilla with a HUGE shark in it named Sarah. Poor Wasilla, they don’t have any idea what she has deprived them of over the years, what their town could be like if it weren’t for her & her vindictive nature. Now it is an ugly little town with big box stores & a big highway running through it. Not many people in that town can afford a big fancy place on a lake.
Anyway, here’s the article:
http://www.tnr.com/talkback.html?id=8c130fe3-adab-4cb3-8443-c363f085cf13
And here’s my favorite comment:
“Thanks for this article. Great reporting and really well-written. Then again, I’m one of those over-educated people that has no place in Sarah Palin’s America. I think we should split the country. Educated elites move into one half and the Palin/Bush crowd move into the other. And when the Palin crowd want medical help or need a lawyer or really require any kind of professional expertise, we’ll just say “sorry! Elites only.” (Oh and we’re taking all the Starbucks too).”
The comment reminds me of a discussion I had with someone where I was so upset about the hate & ugliness this election has brought out in the US, and wishing we could put up a barbed wire fence down the middle of this country to keep those neo-con wackos in their own space with their own insane government, and the other side for reasoned thinkers who care about their world, their country & other people more than their political party & their superior brand of religion.
Ripley,
As to your comment about people not knowing about SP’s bitter side… and that knowing it would somehow change their minds about her. I respectfully disagree. I think it’s precisely that bitterness that makes her so appealing to them. It allows them to give full vent to their own bitterness. And that’s part of what makes her so dangerous.
I keep being reminded of the Martin Niemoller quote:
“They came first for the Communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me,
and by that time, no one was left to speak up.”
@Cynthia,
Regarding the ongoing saga of G. Gordon Liddy’s McCain relationship:
Why is the NY Times continuing to ignore McCain’s “own Bill Ayers”?
Summary: On October 4, The New York Times published a front-page article about Sen. Barack Obama’s association with William Ayers — at least the 18th Times article this year mentioning that association. But the Times has yet to mention Sen. John McCain’s relationship with G. Gordon Liddy. The October 4 article quoted Chicago Tribune columnist Steve Chapman denouncing Obama’s association with Ayers but did not note that Chapman has described Liddy as McCain’s “own Bill Ayers” and written that “[i]f Obama needs to answer questions about Ayers, McCain has the same obligation regarding Liddy.”
As Media Matters for America has noted, Liddy served four and a half years in prison in connection with his conviction for his role in the Watergate break-in and the break-in at the office of the psychiatrist of Daniel Ellsberg, the military analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers. Liddy has acknowledged preparing to kill someone during the Ellsberg break-in “if necessary”; plotting to murder journalist Jack Anderson; plotting with a “gangland figure” to murder Howard Hunt to stop him from cooperating with investigators; plotting to firebomb the Brookings Institution; and plotting to kidnap “leftist guerillas” at the 1972 Republican National Convention — a plan he outlined to the Nixon administration using terminology borrowed from the Nazis. (The murder, firebombing, and kidnapping plots were never carried out; the break-ins were.) During the 1990s, Liddy reportedly instructed his radio audience on multiple occasions on how to shoot Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms agents and also reportedly said he had named his shooting targets after Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Liddy has donated $5,000 to McCain’s campaigns since 1998,
As to your comment about people not knowing about SP’s bitter side… and that knowing it would somehow change their minds about her. I respectfully disagree. I think it’s precisely that bitterness that makes her so appealing to them. It allows them to give full vent to their own bitterness. And that’s part of what makes her so dangerous.
Just my added philosophy for the day. Let’s not get sucked into the negativity. I do not believe in letting people get away with smears and I do believe in fighting back, however as we push back, don’t forget to not just push back with negativity but with truth and a positive attitude.
That’s what they want. It’s always us against them mentality and that’s why there is so much hate, anger, racism, etc.. We’ve got to counterattack that by uplifting, engaging and fair minded conversations. If we don’t we get pulled down the same dark road and then no body wins.
Happy Birthday Anne!!!! All the way from Europe, where we have the autumn storms arriving…
I had to take a few days off Mudflats due to visiting my better half (he knows I’m a Mudflats addict, but his tolerance has limits when we don’t get to see each other very much. He heard Palin’s non-response to the what newspapers do you read gotcha question… what he said was “I can hear she’s lying, I don’t want to watch it too, thank you very much”). Anyway, it’s night time here and I shall be up late working and trying to catch up with everything that’s going on. What a weekend to miss – there has been a definite change of tone in all the Mudpuppies over the weekend… I detect a little bit more stress and panic. Don’t worry, as someone else said, I belive Obama is three steps ahead of McCain and knew it would get this dirty. Breathe deep everyone – including you Anne! 61 hugs…
I have to get back to my Java programming today! I guess I had better hold onto this job if we are heading for 1932 Hooverville here in the U.S. So I will let the Wiki answer your question!
http:[***DELETE BRACKETS TO MAKE LINK WORK***]//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Electoral_College
The main thing is to remember that the Electoral College was a device created by the Founding Fathers to keep the U.S. from falling into mob rule in electing a President. In 2000 it hurt us. In 2008 it just might help us. The benefit is that it usually makes candidates move around to battle ground states rather than just the big, populous states. Makes them become aware of all the state political situations. But then sometimes it can work the other way too. So it’s really a mixed bag in our history.
————————————–
Let’sGetReal aka Falter Locust Palin,
Can some estrogen stoked American woman please assassinate Tucker Hounds to get this twerp out of the gene pool? OMG! How can the lovely American women here on the Mudflats tolerate this guy?
BTW, I actually went to the University of Pennsylvania with Andrea Mitchell! I quite fancied her from a distance when I saw her around campus back then! She had a strange kind of ram rod military like posture that added to her presence. It was unusual and stood out. But even back then she already had kind of the natural botox look. I guess I kind of fancy that look! But I think she should never be allowed to comment on economic issues on the air now. I do admit that I just can’t get my mind around her and, uh, Greenspan in, uh, marital bliss. Such is life in how strange it all turns out. Maybe I really SHOULD have asked her out on a date!
I thought this was a good read “Obama and The Palin Effect” Deepak Chopra
Look at what she stands for:
–Small town values — a denial of America’s global role, a return to petty, small-minded parochialism.
–Ignorance of world affairs — a repudiation of the need to repair America’s image abroad.
–Family values — a code for walling out anybody who makes a claim for social justice. Such strangers, being outside the family, don’t need to be heeded.
–Rigid stands on guns and abortion — a scornful repudiation that these issues can be negotiated with those who disagree.
–Patriotism — the usual fallback in a failed war.
–“Reform” — an italicized term, since in addition to cleaning out corruption and excessive spending, one also throws out anyone who doesn’t fit your ideology.
MJC:
In your respnse to ocliberal, you said exactly what I’ve been having trouble articulating. I too am a Christian who is personally offended by Palin’s conduct.
The thought that’s been running around in my head was “she may be a Christian, but she’s not my kind of Christian”. Then I would think to myself, “okay, that doesn’t make me sound very Christ-like either”.
The more I learn, the faster I want to run in the other direction! A truth which makes me, frankly, very sad, since Alaska has long been at the top of my list of places I would LOVE to visit, especially since I ‘rediscovered’ an old friend there earlier this year.
At any rate, I do sincerely appreciate all the words of wisdom in all your comments, surrounded as I am in rural Eastern Colorado by Republicans! One encouraging thing – I haven’t heard Sarah Palin’s name mentioned recently in my office. The shine seemed to wear off quickly here!
there should be more.
There’s got to be a concise way to express the anti-intellectualism in America, the notion that through sheer grit and determination you can meet ‘challanges’ without thoughtfull analysis that may require intelligence in excess of the ‘common man.’
It may be a kind of petulance that comes from the frustration in school when kids don’t get it, and seek other ways to assert themselves, and overcompensate
for feeling – not too bright.
I blame bad schools, poor anger managment, social values based on style over substance, and feelings of shame dred and worthlessness relating to being ‘dumb.’
This and so much more!
Frank talked with CNN.com about “The Wrecking Crew” and how the news media play into what he terms, borrowing from one of his sources, “the conservative movement industry.”
Frank: “Conservatism is an industry which generates profits on its own. One of the guys I quote in the book describes himself as part of the conservative movement industry. He’s right. So how do you take it on? A big part of their industry is playing you guys. … There are whole groups in Washington aimed at destroying liberal movements, and there’s a whole branch of it aimed at you guys — just at playing your industry, and CNN in particular. And in my opinion, they’ve done that with great effectiveness.”
Tom from PA
There was some talk of the negative campaigning hurting Barack….I suspect not this time.
McCain outspent Obama 3 to 1 in Minnesota since his pullout from Michigan, all of it on negative advertising. The latest poll shot up to +18 for Obama in that state. The negative ads have hit here in PA and the latest polls rose to +10. +12. +15 all Obama.
The country has grown tired of these tactics. I, however, have looked forward to the Keating 5 aspect of this latest financial meltdown. I do believe that Obama was trying to avoid smear tactics in that he will still need to work with McCain in this next Congress. At this moment however it is very relevant to both his character and to keeping the crisis in the debate.
Your Right to Choose
I write to you today with an open heart and a genuine concern for the future of our children. At a time when the presidential race could be seen as a pissing match between adults looking to take power, there are deeper issues — shadow issues — that are wanting and needing to be explored. I share my perspective with you today not so that you can align with me but so that you can dwell deeply in the issues facing our world and find the courage to speak up for what you believe even if it’s unpopular to do so. I am speaking up even after someone recently wrote to me asking me to refrain from talking about politics. For me, that is like asking me to not talk about life. So today, I assert my right to free speech under the First Amendment, even if that speech is socially or politically incorrect, and I want to talk about Sarah Palin, the Vice Presidential candidate for the Republican Party.
Happy, happy b-day! I’m a few older than you, so I keep hoping that each one makes both of us increasingly wise.
I just loved the irony of this quote on The Daily Dish:
“I just have to rely on the good judgment of the voters not to buy into these negative attack ads. Sooner or later, people are going to figure out if all you run is negative attack ads you don’t have much of a vision for the future or you’re not ready to articulate it.” [John McCain on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, 2/21/2000]
Like ocliberal, I’m a believer in justice/karma/divine retribution — oh, I don’t know — can I just call it revenge? But the irony is delicious. As I told my DSD when a boyfriend broke up with her right before finals on year, “Success is the best revenge.” And a resounding Obama victory next month would truly rate as both success and revenge.
I have to tell you – in my little corner of the world, Sarah Palin’s theology is surprisingly mainstream.
Laying on of hands, talking in tongues, faith healing – those are my next door neighbors. People relate to her and don’t necessarily see her as extreme.
Our only hope is that those of us who live in those little corners are enough of a minority that they can’t steal the election.
6 10 2008
I just feel like we are all down here in the trenches fighting a war against lies, half-truth and out and out ugly racist smears. I, for example, am now often targeted by my right-wing coworkers and associates who feel they must educate me about the dangers of electing Barack Obama. They are constantly confronting me with the latest lies and half-truths they just found out about – Which is usually month, even year old rumors. The amount of ignorance out there is alarming.
My favorite response to them when they start a conversation with, “Barack Obama said….” is to have both of us google together to find the ‘proof’ of what Obama said.
For example, a co-worker walked in my office last week fuming that Barack Obama SAID HE was going to destroy all our nuclear defense systems and leave us completely defenseless to nuclear attack. (He learned this at his church.) My first reaction was, “Really? Barack said that? I must have missed that. Let’s find where he said it.” Of course a quick googling results in a youtube video of a Barack Obama video saying quite the opposite, merely that he wants to reduce nuclear proliferation in the world and round up loose nuclear weapons especially from the hands of terrorists. I of course, as is usually the case, agree 100% with Barack Obama’s position and tell my co-worker as much. They of crouse reject snopes, cnn, NY Times, Newsweek and Time as liberal rags. They do have a harder time arguing against Obama’s actual words, although that of course is argued with, Politicians always lie! To that I answer, well yes, yours do. Please find me an Obama lie so I can be aware of it. I’m still waiting for one.
I also urge all my Barack haters to just read the first few chapters of Barack Obama’s book, “Dreams from my Father” just so they know the history of who his parents were, where he came from, where he went to school, what religion he is, if nothing else. None so far have.
I have to say it’s wearing me down. I take solace in the fact that the polls keep creeping up in Barack’s favor, Palin’s favorability ratings keep dropping and also in the comforting knowledge that my own state is solidly blue, so even though I exist as a tiny blue dot in a county full of red voters. I can usually end most arguments by saying, “Thank you for your opinion. I don’t agree with it but you do understand your vote doesn’t really matter in this election in this state so I’m less concerned than I would be otherwise.” (That always pisses them off!)
I hope this madness ends soon. It’s just hard to fight lies and smears all the time. It’s wearing me down. Thank God for Mudflats! It’s an oasis in the desert of ignorance.
I couldn’t tell if anyone had answer the request for an explanation of the electoral college. If this is repetative, I apologize.
The US does not have direct elections (meaning popular vote wins). The constitutional theory behind the indirect election of both the President and Vice President of the United States is that while the Congress is popularly elected by the people, the President and Vice President are elected to be executives of a federation of independent states.
The founding fathers set up indirect elections in that rather than directly voting for the President and Vice President, United States citizens cast votes for electors. Electors are technically free to vote for anyone eligible to be President, but in practice pledge to vote for specific candidates and voters cast ballots for favored Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates by voting for correspondingly pledged electors.
Each state has a number of electors equal to the number of its Senators and Representatives in the United States Congress. Additionally, Washington, D.C. is given a number of electors equal to the number held by the smallest states.
The Constitution allows each state legislature to designate a method of choosing electors. Forty-eight states and the District of Columbia have adopted a winner-take-all popular vote rule where voters choose between statewide slates of electors pledged to vote for a specific Presidential and Vice Presidential candidate. The candidate that wins the most votes in the state wins the support of all of that state’s electors. The two other states, Maine and Nebraska, use a tiered system where a single elector is chosen within each Congressional district and two electors are chosen by statewide popular vote. U.S. Presidential elections are effectively an amalgamation of 51 separate and simultaneous elections (50 states plus the District of Columbia), rather than a single national election.
The size of the Electoral College is equal to the total membership of both Houses of Congress (435 Representatives and 100 Senators) plus the three electors allocated to Washington, D.C., totaling 538 electors.
A candidate must receive an absolute majority of electoral votes (currently 270) to win the Presidency. If no candidate receives a majority in the election for President, or Vice President, that election is determined via a contingency procedure in the Twelfth Amendment, which essentially allows the House of Representatives to select the President.
I am an attorney so I hope that I have not bored all of you too much.
Holland,
My relatives live in Bennebroek, NL. If the US voters don’t see how they’re alienating our allies, I’m moving. The Republicans will tell me “Good Riddance” and I couldn’t care less. This country is sinking. If we can’t even see nor consider how our allies view is, then we’re all alone in this world that we look to the US for our influence. We’ll be laughed out of the global community.
Holland’s ealier post of foreign polls of our closest allies speak out about our elections (just to reiterate ~ sorry if I irritate):
Netherlands: Obama >90%
Germany: Obama 85%
France and Spain: Obama 75%
Netherlands: Obama >90%
Germany: Obama 85%
France and Spain: Obama 75%
And LOOK: USA: McCain 38%, Obama 36%
And look at us ~ we’re still close to a “dead heat”, according to press. We continue our arrogance. No wonder when I travel abroad, when someone asks me if I’m Canadian, I claim I’m from Ontario. I’m sick of the negative reaction I get when I tell the truth. This is pathetic. No more declaring unilateral wars and dragging what few allies we have left into it.
I don’t give the UN much credit for getting things done either, but there’s something called “protocol” and we’ve clearly violated it, repeatedly. If we continue the arrogance, we’ll be alone.
Think about it, “Mr. Bomb Bomb Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran”. You serve no purpose in a civilized society. Take a hike, McCain!
Popular vote vs electoral college:
Al Gore WON the popular vote in 2000, but lost the election because of the electoral college. I think this was when most Americans understood the difference.
Each state has a certain number of “electoral college votes” based on population. With the exception of Maine and Nebraska, if a state has a majority of votes for one candidate, that candidate gets ALL of the electoral votes for that state. So if Minnesota has even one vote more for Obama than for McCain, all ten of her electoral votes go to Obama. (Nebraska and Maine divide their electoral votes, so one congressional district can go to Obama while another goes to McCain). “Swing States” are states that have either changed from one party to the other in a recent Presidential election, or have been very close. Those end up being the states in which most of the real election occurs. I live in Kansas, which is solidly “red”, or Republican, and we only have 6 electoral votes, so we are never actively pursued.
This is supposed to simplify tallying votes, and it does. However, now that our country has advanced, it makes more sense to divide the electoral votes.
Obama’s campaign is unique in that he has a presence in all 50 states and NOT just the swing states. He is not spending as much money in the others, but he wants them to know they do matter.
HamletsMill,
I recognize your name as a longtime poster, and hope you will recognize mine as well.
While I’m no fan of Lieberman and am, indeed, ashamed of him, his words and deeds will not cause me to abandon my religion, a religion you seem to consider is based on “3,000 years of someone else’s hand-me-down suffocating thinking.”
Wow, I just can’t seem to find any words to respond to that. I’ve pondered how to respond to your post and I’m speechless. Others have posted and I appreciate their wise words.
What you said has filled me with so much pain. For someone like me, I do not experience my religion as “hand-me-down suffocating thinking.” Clearly, your friend did. And you assert that you would also leave the religion. That would be your choice. But unless and until you are familiar with the teachings of Judaism, please don’t define it in such a narrow, negative way.
Someone who represents you, whether it be your race, religion, philosophy, economic strata, etc. has said or done something with which you don’t agree. You probably didn’t abandon that which you believe in because of that person. Please don’t suggest that I should leave my religion because of Joe Lieberman. He’s not the spokesperson for Judaism.
Amen, amen ocliberal “I just feel like we are all down here in the trenches fighting a war against lies, half-truth and out and out ugly racist smears.”
Whatever happened to oh-so-sweet-Sarah who, just the other night during the VP Debate, purred that she and Senator McCain want to “look forward, not backward” ?!?! Don’tcha think about what yer sayin’, Sarah ??
Truly, the repugs soon will rue the day when they decided to “take the gloves off”. While Obama/Biden will never stoop to a similar smear campaign, nor will they sit idly by while The Mavericks spread their lies.
Since McCain’s heroism is mentioned almost as often as his maverick-ism, how about a brief wink-back at this career as a heroic Naval aviator ??
McCain’s maverick tendancies seem to extend all the way back to those days !! Indeed, it would be interesting to know the total US tax dollars wasted on the AD-6 Skyraider (Corpus Christi, TX, 1960) that McCain crashed. “McCain recounted the accident decades later in his autobiography. ‘The engine quit while I was practicing landings,’ he wrote. But an investigation board at the Naval Aviation Safety Center found no evidence of engine failure. The 23-year-old junior lieutenant wasn’t paying attention and erred in using a ‘power setting too low to maintain level flight in a turn,’ investigators concluded.” (LA Times, October 6, 2008)
Off the coast of southern Spain, around December 1961, McCain was mavericking around again with a Skyraider aircraft, the Times articile continues, “when he flew into electrical wires, causing a blackout, according to McCain’s own account as well as those of Naval officers and enlistees aboard the carrier Intrepid. In another incident, in 1965, McCain crashed a T-2 trainer jet in Virginia. The Times asked McCain’s campaign to release any military personnel records in the candidate’s possession showing how the Navy handled the three incidents. The campaign said it would have no comment.”
The two faces of John McCain
By Steve Nelson and Dr. Peter Nelson
Article Last Updated: 10/05/2008 04:25:10 PM EDT
Monday, October 06
WASHINGTON, MA.
The public has a right to expect candidates running for president to disclose their medical records. In May John McCain offered a peek at his to a small group of reporters, giving them three hours to peruse over 1,000 pages of documents, but not allowing them to make photocopies or to take notes with anything but pen and paper.
The issue of McCain’s medical history has become particularly relevant with his selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate. He is 72-years-old and has had four bouts of melanoma, the most deadly type of skin cancer. Whether she would be ready to assume the presidency, should McCain become disabled or die in office, is very much on the minds of many voters.
But beyond the issue of a possible presidential succession, there is another question which requires fuller disclosure of his medical history: is McCain temperamentally fit to be commander in chief? The documents made available in May did not include his psychiatric records. Yet in January, Republican Senator Thad Cochran of Mississippi said to The Boston Globe: “The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hotheaded.”
#
Many political commentators are surprised by the contradiction between the “straight talk” McCain of 2000 and the McCain whose 2008 campaign follows
Advertisement
Click Here!
the negative Republican playbook. They typically conclude that he has changed in his dogged pursuit of the presidency. But the truth may be more complex.
The genesis of these “two faces of John” may go back to when he was a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for 5 1/2 years and suffered prolonged torture. According to psychologists, one way in which a person may cope with such extreme stress is by dissociation, a defense mechanism for dealing with psychological trauma that operates by compartmentalizing one’s thoughts and emotions. Undergoing torture, a person tries to dissociate himself from the pain by thinking, it’s not me, I’m not here. Otherwise, you would quickly break, or just go crazy. In fact, McCain has spoken of retreating into a fantasy world during his captivity.
When the trauma persists for a long period of time, the dissociation required for survival becomes an automatic response to stress, which often perplexes on-lookers as they observe what appears to be a person operating in two, often contradictory, modes of perceiving and responding. Hence, the two McCains.
In recent years much attention has been paid to soldiers returning from a combat tour of duty with what is now known as post-traumatic stress disorder, a central feature of which is often dissociation. But during the Vietnam era, PTSD was not yet recognized by psychiatrists as a condition suffered by troops in conflict. So John McCain returned to the states to be celebrated as a war hero, but not to be treated for possible PTSD.
With this in mind, we may better understand the two McCains. One McCain enjoys the celebrity that has carried him from POW to the Republican nomination, while the other McCain derides Obama as a celebrity. One McCain is emphatic that he is not attacking Obama’s patriotism, while the other virtually accuses Obama of treason by saying he’s willing to lose a war in order to win an election. One McCain decries influence-peddling and pork-barrel spending in Washington, denouncing lobbyists as “birds of prey,” while the other surrounds himself with lobbyists as key figures in his campaign. One McCain cites the importance of his experience, the other puts the most inexperienced vice-presidential candidate in modern political history a heartbeat from the presidency.
But there may be, unfortunately, an even darker aspect to the two faces of John. Having suffered a great loss in Vietnam, McCain could be driven to seek vindication on other fronts. In Iraq, where he clings to the pursuit of an ill-defined victory even as the Bush administration begins to accept the concept of a timeline for withdrawal of U.S. forces. In Iran, which he jokes about bomb-bomb-bombing. In Georgia, ratcheting up his long-hostile stance toward Russia by hastily declaring that “we are all Georgians.” Or who knows where next?
The unremitting stress faced by the U.S. president, and McCain’s possibly untreated PTSD, could produce erratic behavior or, even worse, an overly bellicose response to an international crisis. The American public is entitled to know more about his mental fitness to serve in that office, and should demand full disclosure of his psychiatric records now.
Steve Nelson of Washington, MA. is a graduate of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard. Dr. Peter L. Nelson of Nevada City, CA is a social scientist.
SMR, this is lifted directly from Barack Obama’s website (a great place to where to refer folks who need answers):
“Barack Obama has never been Muslim and never practiced Islam. But rumors about his religion intended to frighten some voters persist, and they mostly return to one point of fact: his name. “Barack” is the candidate’s Kenyan father’s name; Obama’s middle name, “Hussein,” is his grandfather’s name. Obama has described his father as atheist or agnostic. His Kansan mom, whose grandparents were devout Protestants, lived a secular life. Obama’s only personal contact with Islam came as a boy when he moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, with a stepfather who mixed his Islam with Hindu and Animist traditions. In five years there, Obama attended a Roman Catholic school, then a public elementary school, where he sat through a class each week of religious studies. As an adult, Obama turned to Christianity in the late ’80s in Chicago, at Trinity United Church of Christ, where he was baptized, married‹and baptized his kids. As a new U.S. senator, Obama took his oath on the family Bible.”
God do I hate Joe Lieberman. He represents everything wrong with the system. If I were Jewish I would now leave my religion and become a follower of Swedenborg. (As a very close Jewish friend of mine actually did! Wow was he happy to get out of 3,000 years of somebody else’s hand-me-down suffocating thinking. Life has gotten better and better for him over the years.)
Now back to work.
HamletsMill,
I recognize your name as a longtime poster, and hope you will recognize mine as well.
While I’m no fan of Lieberman and am, indeed, ashamed of him, his words and deeds will not cause me to abandon my religion, a religion you seem to consider is based on “3,000 years of someone else’s hand-me-down suffocating thinking.”
Wow, I just can’t seem to find any words to respond to that. I’ve pondered how to respond to your post and I’m speechless. Others have posted and I appreciate their wise words.
What you said has filled me with so much pain. For someone like me, I do not experience my religion as “hand-me-down suffocating thinking.” Clearly, your friend did. And you assert that you would also leave the religion. That would be your choice. But unless and until you are familiar with the teachings of Judaism, please don’t define it in such a narrow, negative way.
Someone who represents you, whether it be your race, religion, philosophy, economic strata, etc. has said or done something with which you don’t agree. You probably didn’t abandon that which you believe in because of that person. Please don’t suggest that I should leave my religion because of Joe Lieberman. He’s not the spokesperson for Judaism.
DeMo (12:11:55) :,
Please accept my sincere apology if I offended you. I really did not mean what I said in the way you took it. Let me back up a bit.
In 1970 while awaiting orders to Vietnam to kill or be killed by small arms fire in essentially a hand to hand infantry war, I was stationed in Europe 150 clicks from the East German border in the chain of command of tactical battlefield nuclear weapons. I don’t know what you were doing in 1970 but that is what I was doing.
Since I saw the unbelievable weaponry that few Americans ever see and I already knew 19 year old soldiers that were dead as young men ( Some were dead by being shot to death, some bayoneted through the neck, some blown to pieces by rockets, some blown in half in mine fields, some dying in silence, and some dying screaming) I felt the stirrings of an immense life long meditation in life come upon me.
And then there were some who died by suicide. Let’s not forget them. I got off on a good start with that side of things too.
The first night I was the duty officer on the base I was in Germany, a Vietnam Veteran hung himself in the chapel. Feet right off the altar. The whole statement. I found out later his mother had come over to try to help him and was staying in the town. But this is what he did. She was inconsolable.
The next month when I was the base duty officer again a woman came and asked me if I could help her locate her husband. She was very distraught. She was British. I took her name and her husband’s name and said I would contact the British Consulate the next day.
I had pressing duties like conducting coded communications checks all the way back to the bowels of the Pentagon then down link to people commanding field artillery with the power to start WWIII. I was 24 years old. Six hours later she came back again sobbing asking for help. I assured her I would call the next day and asked how I could reach her. The next morning I called the British Consulate to try to help her.
It turned out they knew of the woman. I was new so I was not informed. Her husband had died in the first wave in Normandy on D-Day 26 years before. Her husband was dead. There was nothing I could do. She had been coming there for years to the base duty officer to try to get help. I had to call her number and tell her there was nothing I could do. Her husband had bled out on that sand or floated lifeless in the rolling surf that day. He was dead and there was nothing I could do to bring him back.
It was all the ambiance of the 1960’s. It all concentrated the mind wonderfully.
So I started to thinking about everything I had ever been taught by anybody. I was raised a Christian. I actually once thought about becoming a Lutheran minister. I loved to study the Old Testament and the New Testament. People used to call me for ideas for their term papers, because i saw things in the text nobody else ever seemed to see. Back in the 1960’s I began to notice that a lot of people who called themselves “Christians” in those days wept for the broken body of Jesus but gave their sons to be destroyed in war. Of course, in more recent times since the draft was skilfully politically ended in 1973, people who call themselves “Christians” weep for the broken body of Jesus and give OTHER PEOPLE’S SONS (and now OTHER PEOPLE’S DAUGHTERS too) to be destroyed.
So after I survived my time in the Armed Forces of the United States, I too ended up with flowing shoulder length hair and hung out with unsavory rock musicians and people studying Gurdjieff , The Egyptian Book of the Dead, Buddhism, the Sufis, Herman Hesse, G.C. Jung, the Hindu sages, and many other writers, thinkers, and spiritual searchers and although I was never big into drugs, I commensurated with various friends and relatives that had done some considerable chemically induced voyaging through various states of mystical consciousness in the known and unknown Universe/Multiverse. I always loved to discuss every esoteric tradition and philosophy with people I met. All the stops including the Jewish Kabbalah years before Madonna ever had her first orgasm. I loved all the Jewish esoteric lore like the concept of Midrash. And, most of all, I absolutely loved the writings of Antoine Fabre d’Olivet concerning Hebrew.
http:[**DELETE BRACKETS FOR LINK***]//www.answers.com/topic/fabre-d-olivet
And I loved the writings of R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz.
I found out that there had been people thinking very deeply for a very long time about the unbelievable river of blood on this planet and what might really be going on cosmically behind the scenes. But you had to search.
In 1982 I was in Israel doing research for a book when I just happened to be on the border with Lebanon when the Israel-Lebanon war broke out. I had never seen that much armor since going through basic training in the Armed Forces of the United States in the summer of 1966. Like everybody on Earth both back then and now, I knew that Israel is the trip wire of the Nuclear Age for the entire world. I mused on this as I hugged the shaking ground with artillery slamming into Lebanese positions across the border. I then resolved to further deepen my personal project to try to figure out just what is wrong with the people of the Middle East – Jews, Christians, and Muslims – who keep saying they know “all about God” but can’t stop killing one another for century after century. They keep saying they have the original McDonald’s Franchise of “God knowledge” yet they don’t seem to ever get any kind of benefit from it but endless death and endless killing? So I started to do even more esoteric search.
It’s now 2008 and the world is on the continuous brink same as ever in my lifetime. The Abrahamic religions of the Middle East are Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Babi, and Baha’i. Things have not gone too well for either Judaism, Christianity, or Islam as to living up to their “Sacred Teachings”. In fact, things have not gone very well AT ALL now for 3,000 years and counting for ANY of the Big Three Abrahamic “spiritual” traditions. The jury is still out on Babi and Baha’i. But things don’t seem to be going very well these days with them either as to living up to a manifestly competent potential. So what is going on? What is the real story with this spiritual linage and spiritual tradition from the Middle East?
In 2008 I say it is contained in these books I am listing below. There is a System of Profound Esoteric Cosmic Knowledge BEHIND ALL the Abrahamic religions that even Bill Mahr would find interesting. It’s just that it is way, way, way OVER THE HEADS of the people who transmitted it down through history. The question now is this:
(1) Does someone like Joe Lieberman who is supposed to be “Jewish” know anything at all about the profound system of cosmic knowledge that is behind “Judaism”?
(2) Does someone like the Lard Christ Reverend Jenny Craig Hagee who is supposed to be a “Christian” know anything at all about the profound system of cosmic knowledge that is behind “Christianity”?
(3) Does someone like Mr. “I have family issues from having 50 siblings” Osaman Bin Laden or “Can I get some riser shoe inserts to look taller” Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who are supposed to be a “Muslims” know anything at all about the profound system of cosmic knowledge that is behind “Islam”?
(4) Does Dream Christian Date Sarah Palin know jack squat (or as they say in the Marine Corps “JFD” ) about the profound system of cosmic knowledge that is behind “Christianity” from the garbled system of low budget insight down at the Wassilla Bible Church?
This was what I was talking about in my post that I expressed so poorly. I apologize for offending you. Let’s start a dialogue along these lines over time if you wish. I am open to it. I’d love to hear your insights from your understanding of Judaism since you said Joe Lieberman is not exactly your personal Rabbi! That is a good ground to start on.
If anyone here wants to read these below books, we can then start a long thread in the Forum over time on an esoteric understanding of the profound system of cosmic understanding encoded into the religions of the Middle East that is completely over the heads of the people that follow these religions today. That is, if imminent “Financial Armageddon” (there’s an esoteric twist!) does not cause people’s broadband money to go for bulk spaghetti and beans now.
Again, please accept my apology for my apparently rude post in your frame of reference. I did not mean it that way. Judaism indeed has a very deep, very profound ancient system of wisdom behind it from 7,000 years ago in the Middle East. There were people that lived before us that were quite possibly smarter than us.
Here is the basic book list for an esoteric study of the Abrahamic religions of the Middle East with the links opened so they can post here:
I just thought of something. Can anyone answer this question.???
When Palin called Obama a terriost–and a police officer stood on the stage with her IN UNIFORM and made a nasty remark—–Is is LEGAL for a police officer to take part in a rally IN UNIFORM??????? IS THIS LEGAL??????
To me—-a police officer IN UNIFORM is ON DUTY!!! Right? I think he should be charged with something. PLEASE let me know what you all think.
The answer to McCain’s new McCarthyism should be Joseph Welch’s response to the original McCarthyism. The situation is very similar and the response is very apt.
“Until this moment, Senator, I think I never really gauged your cruelty or your recklessness….
You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?”
Unfortunately, they can be on “special duty” – hired for the occasion and given specific assignments for the organization that hires them. Technically they are functioning outside the regular service as a protective detail, usually for very hefty overtime. It’s a popular means of income augmentation.
Thank you for your thoughtful and thought-filled reply. I appreciate the history of your life that you shared and the writings you suggested.
The people who corrup religion to advance personal or religious agendas are not the people I look to for spiritual advice or sustenance. And there are many of them out there.
The people who claim to be good ___________ (insert name of religion) protest too much. I make no such claim. I merely try to live by the words of Hillel: “That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah; the rest is commentary. Go and study it.”
And, so, I study each week’s Torah portion trying to understand how I can improve myself and the lives of those around me.
I truly appreciate your kind offer to discuss the esoteric study of the Abrahamic religions. However, I find it nearly impossible to transmit tone through words, despite the fact that I’m a writer. (Disclaimer: I can transmit tone for “assignments,” but it’s a tall order when discussing “hot” topics.
I have a much greater understanding of your position, given your personal history. And I respect the decisions you have made for your life. Even without knowing my personal history, I hope you can appreciate the decisions I have made for my life. And so long as neither of us attempts to impose those decisions on another, and strives to respect the other, we are human beings trying to make sense of our lives in the best way we know.
I will not do to my neighbor what is hateful to me, though in this election it takes tremendous restraint to hold my tongue. And I have been tested, as I’m sure others have. I took to heart what Obama said: We can disagree without being disagreeable.
My best hope is that reason will prevail, truth will conquer fear and idealism (yes, idealism) will push us all foward to a better America. (As Elie Wiesel said, when he invoked Camus, where there is no hope, we must invent hope.)
I am so glad you saw my apology. I am very sorry if I hurt you in any way. With this election looming, these deeper, more metaphysical issues must take a background position for the moment. But perhaps in the future as the Mudflats goes on and evolves, we can have a wide ranging discussion and exploration of ideas at some point. I am sure many people on the Mudflats have thought about spirituality and the nature and meaning of life and death in the limitless and vast Cosmos. I am sure everyone has thoughts to share on the life philosophy they have developed whether it be inward or outward.
I fully agree with what you wrote:
“My best hope is that reason will prevail, truth will conquer fear and idealism (yes, idealism) will push us all foward to a better America. (As Elie Wiesel said, when he invoked Camus, where there is no hope, we must invent hope.)”
“Where there is no hope, we must invent hope.”
AMEN
The fact that you came back to check this thread to see if I saw what you wrote and to see if I replied says a lot to me about your character.
Despite an initial misunderstanding, we were able to have a civil discourse and resolve things.
The Internet is an easy place for issues to devolve into name calling and ugliness. I’m sure you’ve read things, as I have, that have shocked you. The ability and willingness for people to hurl insults is enough to make one wonder what is at the core of some people.
I’m sure if we were ever to meet and share a meal, our conversation would be highly interesting and thought provoking.
Thank you for such a sincere aplogy and thank you even more for caring enough to have this conversation with me.
Love PBS, especially Frontline and POV. Let’s get them to film our meeting! I’ve always wanted to make a documentary. The next best thing would be to appear in one.
A variation on Hugo’s quote, at least in my mind:
You really touched my heart wishing every blessing upon me. And upon you… With absolutely no intent to impose my beliefs upon you, but to say to you what I say to ALL the people in my life at this time of year, Shana Tovah. Wishing you a happy, healthy and sweet year.
