Open Thread – Countdown to Truth, 7 Days to Go!

Thanks to all of you who are submitting daily emails to the Legislative Council urging them to release the results of the Branchflower Report as soon as it becomes available!  You guys are fantastic.  It is absolutely critical that these council members realize that the eyes of the nation are upon them, and that Americans have the right to know the results of this ethics investigation before they cast their vote in November.

That said, when Mudflatters got on task today they discovered three things.

  1. Senator Kim Elton is fully on board with releasing the report!  So, we can remove him from the list of emails to send.
  2. Senator Lyda Green is also going to vote to release the report!
  3. Gary Wilken, however, seems to think that this is none of your business if you live outside of Alaska.  Here are some of the responses to emails he received:

“I don’t care what happens in New Jersey. Do me a favor and let Alaskans take care of Alaska.”

“Hi Lisa in NC, Let Alaskans take care of Alaska.  Move here, then you can lobby me.  G. Wilken”

“Thanks and have a great New York day.  G. Wilken”

First, I assure you not all Alaskan Legislators are this rude.  Senator Wilken simply fails to realize that Governor Palin is much more than the Governor of Alaska. She is the Vice Presidential nominee of the Republican party, and when we vote for her, we are voting for a woman who could easily become the next President of the United States.  All of them.  Even New Jersey, New York and North Carolina.  So when you send your emails today, think about gently and politely reminding him of that fact!

That said, the Countdown to Truth continues!  Fellow blogger Gryphen over at The Immoral Minority has compiled a Top Ten list of reasons why the Legislative Council shoudl release the report (a la David Letterman).  You’ll get one a day as a big GOLD STAR for getting that homework done!

#10: Maybe once the report comes out people will stop naming their pitbulls “Sarah” and making them wear lipstick.  Because that is just all kinds of wrong.

 #9: It will give Meg Stapleton the opportunity to stop lying about Walt Monegan and Troopergate, and to start lying about why Sarah got her ass handed to her in tonight’s debate. 

 #8: If it doesn’t come out then, what will Alaska Progressive bloggers write about all weekend?

So now we’re down to 12 Legislators.  Thank you Kim Elton and Lyda Green for your commitment to release the report!  Will we be able to take anyone else off the list today?  Send those emails and post if you get responses.  This is something you can do that actually will make a difference!

AKM, I was headed off to bed, then noticed you were still up and posting again. I just couldn’t sleep until I read the latest. I got my homework done about 11:30 this morning but have not gotten a reply from any of the Senators. I didn’t indicate in my email if I was in AK or not, so that could have put me in the no response pile, or they just may have received so many emails they either haven’t gotten to mine, or they stopped responding altogether. I will keep you posted if I do receive any indication someone has read my email.

Many thanks to you for all you’ve been doing to keep AK and the lower 48 informed. You are marvelous!

Well I couldn’t bring myself to watch, but sampled a bunch of live blogs and post debate coverage. Palin helped herself, which will have helped McCain some, because pre-debate 33% of people said they were less likely to vote for McCain because of her.

The conservative commentators predictably thought she won. But Chris Matthews said the headline out of the debate is “Palin wants more power for the vice-president.”

The surprise may have been that Joe Biden helped himself, too. 98% of people (I think CBS poll) thought Biden has the knowledge to be president. That’s a staggering number. 66% think Palin does, which is not a surprise after the debate. Considering how many were waiting for SP to fall on her face, they’re forgetting how many commentators were talking about the big risks for Biden in this debate, and the reason they’re forgetting is that he won the debate.

Increasingly hard to paint Obama as risky. And when Palin was arguing that the country needs change and a fresh new face, she was arguing that we ought to elect Barack Obama president.

If the Alaska state legislature does what it needs to and releases the report, that news will overtake any debate performance.

Satisfactory, I think. Besides that, the news today is quickly going to become what happens to the rescue plan – badly, badly, sold as a bailout plan. Vermont is already hurting. The headline yesterday was that the state’s colleges and the University were scrambling to find cash because Wachovia wouldn’t make their cash available.

Hey AKM,

The debate was a doozy. I barely made it through all of her folksy comments and glib responses without throwing the tv out the window. Barely. Biden was great and proved he had both the experience and the understanding of the issues.

I’m glad to hear the release of the Branchflower Report is moving forward!

Biden did exactly what was needed. He did not attack her and giver her cause to cry out and seek pity, and he did not allow her to dominate him in any way.

Joe gave a marvelous demonstration of controlled aggression and made returned this VP debate status to that of the non-event it should be.

Joe,Biden, great job making it easier for voters to focus on the real issue – how much more capable Barack Obama is when compared to John “Angry Gargoyle” McCaint.

The fresh new face she meant was Sarah Palin. When I think about her comments last night about the role of the VP and her blatant self promotion
(while Biden was appropriately promoting Obama while shooting down McCain), I shudder. Especially when I recall her statements from church. She’s on a holy mission, make no mistake.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (CNN) — An Alaska judge refused Thursday to throw out subpoenas for members of Gov. Sarah Palin’s administration in the State Legislature’s investigation of her firing of her public safety commissioner.

Anchorage Superior Court Judge Peter Michalski rejected a request by Palin’s Republican allies to shut down the investigation and ruled that the subpoenas were issued properly by the state Senate Judiciary Committee.

Gina – yeah, I know she meant herself, but since people really vote for the top of the ticket, I think the effect of her argument is to say people should vote for Barack Obama.

If you think what you need is a new face and new ideas, why would you vote for John McCain? Besides, she didn’t give us any new ideas.

Watching the debate at a Fortune women’s conference, I asked Meg Whitman, the co-chair of McCain’s campaign, what she thought of Palin’s performance. “Good enough,” she said. But good enough for what, exactly? After Thursday night, the only thing Palin proved herself good enough for is starring in her own reality show. Watching Biden and Palin on the same stage was like watching a tennis champion walk onto Centre Court at Wimbledon only to find himself facing an over-eager toddler holding a tennis racket on the other side of the net. The only subject on which Palin displayed superior knowledge was when she corrected Biden on the proper delivery of “Drill, baby, drill!” Christie Hefner thought Palin’s sex-tinged twist on the chant should be appropriated for a commercial. Interestingly, Wilken was the only one who responded to my email! I’m hoping that they all hit the delete button for non-residents. Today I think I’ll just sign my name, *walk like an Alaskan* and see what happens.

About the debate: I keyed in on the body language. She was rigid through most of it, eyes glued to the cheat sheets. Towards the end, she was grasping at straws while trying to keep her head above water.

Her whole demeanor changed when she comfortably slipped into her folksy persona. Ummm, this is a vice presidential debate, Sarah, not a pitch for Gateway computers! He’s way too professional for it, but what I would’ve given to see Joe mimick the folksy crap! And a shout out? Are you freekin’ kidding me??

Joe got to me with his sincere choke up. Sarah the Ice Queen, I just wanted to choke.

I actually feel sorry for her – after reading about McShame’s temper, he is going to rip her a new one if they don’t win this election. The whole debate was so embarrassing that I turned it off after 20 minutes. I couldn’t believe how robotic she was and only seemed to make any sense when she was talking about Alaskana – I loved how Biden through in the word Exxon a lot, wonder if that was on purpose! As in Exxon Valdez and Baker v Exxon . . .

I have to admit that it was far superior to the first Presidential debate and at least Palin had the nerve to actually look at and address Joe, unlike McCain.
Of course, that probably got easier once she realized that he was definitely not going to attack her, personally. I got the feeling that it kind of confused her that he was able to be so tough on issues, without any of it leaking over into his delivery or attitude. Unlike McCain’s attacks on the Dem ticket, it truly was nothing personal…just straightforward politics, a difference of opinions and difference in styles. Something that has nearly disappeared in this country in the past decade or so. We can’t just disagree anymore, we have to obliterate those who don’t agree. Thank you, W!
I found her body language verging on the truly bizarre, especially if you include the strange facial expressions. I am picturing a compilation clip of her winks, grimaces, strange smiles, etc. set to music…haven’t come up with the tune yet, though.

Brit- interesting take on the debate. Other than relating to her as a family woman, I didn’t see any mention of agreeing with her stance on issues. Sad but all too true for those who judge by the cover.

The debate showed Palin performing as a trained monkey, proving that Republican indoctrination works with some. As Alexander Pope says, “A little learning is a dangerous thing.” It seemed to me that Palin didn’t know what to do with the material she had crammed so hard to remember, so just slotted it in when she felt the urge. A truly superficial performance.

Joe Biden represents the “common man [person],” in his demeanor, his compassion, and his real concern for main street America. I felt like he was someone I could sit down with in a diner, who would listen and respond by fighting for bedrock principles. “Folksy” doesn’t cut it anymore.

I thought it was odd that she wore her hair down except maybe that was supposed to make her look sexier? It makes her look like a high school kid. Hair up would have at least made her look somewhat mature. I thought she did a lot of sneering under the guise of smiling, it drove me crazy that whenever she was looking down at her notes to cram for the next sentence, she had this snotty smile . . . creepy.

while waiting for a question, in all of her few interviews and in this debate, though to a slightly lesser extent, palin looks like an eager student jiggling in her seat squeaking “call on me! call on me!”

IFILL: Governor, you mentioned a moment ago the constitution might give the vice president more power than it has in the past. Do you believe as Vice President Cheney does, that the Executive Branch does not hold complete sway over the office of the vice presidency, that it it is also a member of the Legislative Branch?

PALIN: Well, our founding fathers were very wise there in allowing through the Constitution much flexibility there in the office of the vice president. And we will do what is best for the American people in tapping into that position and ushering in an agenda that is supportive and cooperative with the president’s agenda in that position. Yeah, so I do agree with him that we have a lot of flexibility in there, and we’ll do what we have to do to administer very appropriately the plans that are needed for this nation.

combined with palin’s remark about “building our embassy, also, in Jerusalem,” we would all do well to remember that if successful, this woman would be in a position to decide the date of the apocalypse which she believes will come in her life time.

Joe Biden did an excellent job. At first he was a little off guard, but got up to speed. His problem was having to answer the moderator’s questions (which Palin informed all she probably wouldn’t do), and he had to respond to the nonsense she kept spewing.

So we know she hates the press, hates the east coast and hates democrats. She maybe tolerates gay couples and thinks the VP power should be expanded because she has executive experience. She resurrected Gen McClellan and I thought I heard her place the Taliban in Iraq.

Am I the only one that noticed that Biden always spoke to the moderator (as requested by the moderator) but Palin stared into the TV camera in an obvious attempt to say that she was speaking to her best friends, the American citizens. Sorry Mrs. Governor but that didn’t work for me; you come across as false and manipulative with your phony smile and your endless prattling of the talking points you were coached on for days. I hate to do this to the fine people of Alaska but please take her back.

Here is one man’s opinion of the debate last (please forgive the verbosity)
Several weeks ago, when the polls were much closer, there were only three demographics were Barack trailed.
1.) Under-educated white females-much of which was the Hillary democrat vote which fo various reasons are coming back to the fold. Barack now leads there.
2.) Under-educated white males-is there a trend forming here?
3.)Senior citizens-by far the largest gap. This is a very astute, very vocal voting bloc. Speaking as one who is getting there quickly, they do not take to change easily. IMHO, when a young, relatively inexperienced man of color decided to run for the highest office in the land, it scared them. Although I have nothing to back this up per se, the presidential debate rally closed the gap. The seniors saw someone who was very presidential,highly intelligent, calm, passionate and the change he was talking about would benefit them. Florida and Pennsylvania, the 2 “oldest” states in the country had dramatic swings in Obama’s direction over the last 2 weeks. Last night’s debate sealed the deal. Again it was inexperienced youth vs older experience. This time the former came up weak. Seniors will not be swayed with winks, call-outs and folksey talk. That will influence the under-educated males much more. They will see through the charade. Biden, however, was one of them, talking directly to them on matters that they care deeply about.
I suspect that last night will furthe solidify MS, AL, AR and the Bible belt states which were already solid for McCain. I will expect to see further movement though for Obama in FL, PA, OH which are the far more crucial states.

If 66% of the people in this country think she would make a good President, I fear for the future of this country. How can they think someone who speaks in talking points and refuses to answer questions that she doesn’t have a convenient talking point for, could make a good President. A president doesn’t get to bring cue cards into debates with foreign dignitaries.

And what’s up with the cue cards? Why did they allow her to bring them into a debate. I have never seen a debate where the opponents were allowed to bring in cue cards.

In this department, if you’re scoring at home, Joe gets an ‘A’ while Sarah gets a ‘C-‘.

I was flipping back and forth between the debate and the baseball playoffs – did she really say ” I’m not going to answer YOUR questions, Gwen; I’ve brought my own.” – or something to that effect ?

And if so, why didn’t Gwen call her on it (or did she) ?

I thought she did well, unfortunatly. They had managed to set the bar so low as long as she didn’t totally fall on her face she came off looking good. She told alot of lies with great conviction. Unfortunatly there are those that will believe her.
Joe Biden did very well, while I knew something of his history other than his acceptance speech I hadn’t heard him speak much. I was impressed as were my relatives who are leaning heavily tward Obama even though they have traditionally been republicans. Uncle Earl was not impressed with Sarah he is our fence sitter. But then Uncle Earl is nearly 80, not a republican for religious reasons, and a bit behind the times as far as womens lib goes. So Sarah had a high bar with him to prove herself. He has decided that Obama is looking pretty good right now.
Did my home work, got two respones both were nice and both said they planned to vote to release the report.

Senator Gary Wilken must realize that if he wants Sarah Palin to win my vote, I have to know more what has happened up in Alaska around the time she’s the Governor there. I totally agree with AKM, this is no longer an Alaska issue, it’s our entire country’s issue, so Senator Wilken must vote to release the Legislative Council report.

This Morning I woke up feeling so apprehensive about what I saw last night.
It scares the “blank” out of me to think that there are people in this country that thought she did well.
All she did was parrot talking points.
I think she had a list of answers in front of her and would pick the one that came closest to the question.
How depressing is that.??

I am not a citizen of your great state. However, as a concerned American, I respectfully request that you accept and release to the American public, Stephen Branchflower’s report concerning allegations of official misconduct perpetrated by Governor Sarah Palin on October 10, 2008 as has been previously announced.

Despite claims otherwise, all Council members who were present (eight Republicans and four Democrats) voted unanimously to hire Stephen Branchflower, a former prosecutor, to investigate possible wrongdoing by the Governor’s office. Therefore, this is NOT a partisan attack. The only partisanship in this affair seems to emanate from Talis Colberg who, on the advice of the McCain campaign, has filed suit to quash legislative subpoenas. Possibly an act of witness tampering.

Furthermore, after 30 years as an exemplarary Alaskan public servant, Walt Monegan does not deserve the smear campaign launched against him. Justification for his removal from office has changed at least four times since July.

I understand that tremendous and unwarranted outside pressure has been brought to bear on you as a legislative body. However, Governor Palin’s entry onto the national stage, prior to a proper vetting, means that this is no longer an “Alaska-Only” issue.

Without transparency, there can be no accountability.

She did the folksy thing and asked Senator Biden if she could call him Joe. He didn’t refuse her. THAT would have been rude.

It’s definitely a sign of respect to call an opponent by their title, ie. Senator, but they’re also peers (to the extent that they’re running for the same office) and asking to call him Joe was very low on my list of mistakes she made last night.

I have to admit that I’m sorry none of her gaffes were glaring. Even when stumped, she returned to energy. A non-answer, but the words filled the air so she didn’t appear to search for an answer.

She was well-rehearsed and it showed. But to many, it may appear that she had a command of facts. But I think those who could be so easily swayed were rooting for her to begin with. I’m comforting myself with the idea that there’s no net gain or loss.

Who knew that competing in beauty pageants could give you the self confidence to spew bullshit in front of a 3 decades’ experience senator? What was most scary to me was that when Biden shut her down cold on her baloney about Obama raising taxes, she kept parroting that line about raising taxes. She knows full well she is an attack dog, and she had to know from what Biden said that she was spewing inaccuracies, and she did it with relish.

Sarah Palin referring to people like me as “Joe Sixpack” is very offensive to me as most people take this to mean a manual laborer who sits in front of the TV each night with a beer in his hand until he gets drunk and then rails at the wife and kids. I have worked in construction all of my life (project manager of major projects on the East Coast) but I have a college degree, I love classical music and opera, I do not drink, I get involved in politics, I raised a very close knit family that watches out for each other and I contribute much to the community. The fact that Sarah Palin considers the average American male to be “Joe Sixpack” speaks volumes as to her values and character.

My friend and I watched the debates and had our paper and pen ready. Our objective was to make a hash mark everytime SP evaded a question or gave a non answer or answered with no substance about the actual question.

Well after 10 hash marks in about the first 15 minutes, my friend looked at me and said it would be easier if we make a hash mark for questions she actually answers.

Our final tally was 2 actual answered questions. Gay Marriage and Her VP under the legislative body BS!

Every question was talking points and stump speech combined.

I called my military SIL after the debate to get his take on her Iraq answers. He has been deployed there 3 times. His answer was very blunt! She does not know shat about Iraq and is scary in her ignorance.

Guess that about says it all.

I agree and can’t believe anyone would think she did OK in the debate.
In fact, I might have liked her a little if she had cried or been at a loss for words, because it would have shown her humanity and that she is a real person. Instead she came across as robotic, just reciting what she was programmed to say.
I was disturbed by her two personalities. She would begin to answer a question by doing the whole high school coed/Gidget thing, winking and smiling and being all cutesy, and then it was like someone said in her ear, “focus”, and she would instantly switch to her serious face. She would look into the camera (no blinking) and spew out what she had been coached
to say. I found the transition from one face to the other very disconcerting.

I did my homework and sent a letter to all of the members of the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon. Oddly, Gary Wilkens’ bounced back. I wondered if maybe he was a “Rep” and not a “Sen” so I sent it to Rep_Gary-Wilken… and it didn’t bounce back (?!).

I opened my message thanking each of them for their service to Alaska. It’s easier to catch flies with sugar instead of vinegar, right? I haven’t heard back from anyone. However I continue to hold HOLLIS FRENCH in high regard because I emailed him a couple of weeks ago urging him to “stay the course” and he actually emailed me back a very gracious response.

I think SP did better last night than anyone expected. And I am sort of glad also. Because it is always sweeter to achieve victory over someone located SOMEWHERE on the playing field also, rather than to just roll over the weak and meek also. She has a fine future ahead of her as a Fox News anchor reading a teleprompter, or perhaps as a soap opera actress as she has demonstrated a great proficiency for memorizing lines. Also.

I am very glad she managed not to lick her finger on national television again also.

Joe Biden was the mack-daddy! I want to shop at his Lowe’s in Wilmington! That heartfelt comment about knowing what it is like to worry about your children–OMG, I choked up too. I do wish he had corrected SP on her misspeak about McKiernan’s name (not McClellan)–not aggressively, just that he would have referred to the general by his correct name in a rebuttal.

She campaigned in Michigan and unleashed her supporters in a massive grassroots campaign in New Hampshire. Yesterday, the McCain campaign pulled out of Michigan. In an answer to questions about her foreign policy experience ahead of tonight’s make-or-break vice presidential TV debate, her aides listed numerous contacts with foreign officials – including Britain’s ambassador to Washington, Sir Nigel Sheinwald.

what choice did she have? given the option of saying on national television ‘i have no idea what that means and don’t know the answer’ or segueing off into energy speel, of course she took the rehearsed way out. i wouldn’t take it personally. it was NOTHING like Mccains blatant display of racist behavior during the debate w/Obama. racism is more easily determined in dismissive, degrading behavior (like refusal to look at someone) than questioning someones reason for not being truthful, or evading an answer. imho. people have their own motivations for not being forthcoming, like looking like an idiot or an asshole.

I too detected a whiff of racism when Gov Palin refused to answer the questions put to her. As for Ms. Ifill, I think the broken foot, the modified format and the fear of being labeled biased as a result of publicity regarding her upcoming book all contributed to her (Ifill’s) lackluster performance.

That is great news, Tom! I do not live in PA, but I went there to canvas not too long ago, and so hope that PA will be blue on Nov. 4. I hope McCain does pull out of there.

Katie- sadly I think Ifill was walking on eggshells given the pre-debate controversy regarding her upcoming book title. Maybe Ifill should have stepped down but she didn’t buckle to the pressure. *Attacking* Palin in that manner would have given an anger rise to the many mezmerized Palinites especially after Katie continuously *picked on her* throughout her interviews. Anyone who was listening to the substance was very aware that the questions were not being answered; those that watched to see that their heroine didn’t freeze (cluelessly) were happy to call her recitation as glorious win .

Given all that, on several occasions Ifill allowed Biden to continue with a final word, interjecting additonal information which refuted Palin’s smug pot shots at him and the Dems. I guess fair is fair.

Did anyone hear whether the release of Palin’s financials has been delayed until October 6th?

I think I understand what you are saying about Sarah seeming racist. However, I believe I remember Palin saying she “wouldn’t be answerin’ questions the way the moderator or her opponent wanted her to’. To me, she is simply so rude and dismissive of EVERYONE, her underlying motives are difficult to sort out. Sarah seems to be an equal-opportunity offender!

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Friday that she disagrees with the John McCain campaign’s decision to pull staff and resources out of Michigan.

“I want to get back to Michigan, and I want to try,” Palin said in an interview on Fox News. “Todd and I, we’d be happy to get to Michigan. We’d be so happy to speak to the people there in Michigan who are hurting.”

The McCain campaign confirmed yesterday that it will be moving resources out of Michigan to more favorable terrain in Pennsylvania and Maine.

The Alaska governor first heard the news this morning and fired off a quick e-mail to campaign officials expressing her displeasure with the move.

“Oh c’mon, do we have to?” Palin said she wrote.

I’m hearing the McCain campaign is running out of money, hence their decision to pull stakes. The RNC has plenty of funds available but I think they see the writing on the wall and are using them for the congressional races that need funding. just my humble opinion.

i can imagine her saying this to katie couric or any other interviewer/ moderator. i also heard she refers to people in her homestate who don’t kowtow to her polices ‘haters’ and that she is cut throat w/getting revenge on her ‘enemies’.

this was just my perception. there were many things about her i found repulsive thruout the evening, but racism towards Ifil wasn’t one of them.

So all you want to do is bash Obama, right? You had a chance to tell us what you stood for last night (without the filter!) and didn’t do it. And I still can’t believe anyone thought she did a good job. Did the MSM watch the same debate as us last night?

Not a very smart move for the person who is second on the ticket to completely disrespect his decision let alone go public like that making it seem like she cares even if he doesn’t.

Most of us learn that early on in our working lives…. where the lesson is stronger and longer lasting than the sting of the rebuke from the boss.

To Meat Notgay Palin: No, I’ve not received any responses to my emails to the Legislative Committee yesterday or today.

To those getting bounced responses from Senator Wilken, I’ve sent them to Senator_Gary_Wilken@legis.state.ak.us. Yesterday it was listed as “Wilkin” with an i, which caused mail to bounce. Given some of the Senator’s responses that have been reported here, I wouldn’t be surprised if he started blocking emails.

And I’m still waiting to hear the news about the Palins’ financial disclosures. Tick, tick, tick…

Good afternoon Mudpals! Lots of reading to catch up on but I wanted to point something out that bother me last night (among almost everything she said).

When SWWNBN was asked specifically about what SHE would do as Vice President she kept saying WE in her answers. Now from the outside people might think she was referring to McCain and herself which she ended up clarifying at the end of the answer. However, I got the weird impression that she was really talking about WE as in TODD and SARAH. Even my husband noticed it so…are we crazy or did anyone else notice it too?

Actually, to correctly quote Palin in that interview about the McSame campaign pulling out of Michigan, one must drop more “g’s” – she actually said, “Polls are showin’ we’re not doin’ as well there. . . . Oh, c’mon, do we hafta? Do we hafta call it there? . . . (Todd and I) would be happy to get to speak with the people in Michigan who are hurtin’ because the economy is hurtin’. . .”

Maybe we should leave out ALL the g’s when we quote her – that’s just about what she does!

Could this be what we’ve all been waiting for….the two sociopaths go head to head. Sister Sarah’s on some kind of a triumphant high after the debate. There is nothing she can’t do. You could see it in her eyes & her demeanor….she just knew she had WON. She was very close to a power salute at the end. She is so out of touch she doesn’t realize her performance was marginal. McCain must be feeling the heat. Hey, she even crazier than I am. She’s stealing my thunder. He’s been in the senate a long time & he’s losing a lot of friends. I agree. I think Ifill was a very poor moderator. The questions were okay, but she refused to keep Palin on track to answer the questions. She let Palin do whatever she wanted. I can’t imagine any other Presidential/Vice Presidential Debate moderator doing that. It’s a Vice Presidential debate, for chrissakes, not a high school debate team!

However, maybe she was on pain medication for her broken leg. She was sounding pretty folksy herself, at times.

I too…was very disappointed in Ifil. I realize she was kind of broadsided by the McCain cronies regarding the book she is writing, however anyone who is anyone knows that the book is not written specifically in favour of Obama. It isnt even all about Obama.

Ifil should have taken some kind of stand. Its bad enough Palin was given the benefit of the doubt by giving her a modified way to debate…but for heaven sake..it was still supposed to be a debate. It was not anything close to being a debate.

Yes..Joe did very well indeed…but we knew he would. He answered the questions put to him and had to put up with all kinds of idiocy from Palin. There was nothing “moderated” about the affair though. As far as Palin is concerned it was an opportunity to get in a few more of those digs that she had so much success with at the RNC.

No…I am very disappointed in Ifil. Simply following up ….or gently reminding the governor everytime she skipped a question…is certainly not too much to ask. I could have wept…especially as I held Ifil in such high esteem. No excuses…none are acceptable.

The right wing MSM would have Ifil’s head by now. This was a catch 22 for Ifil, since they were trying to keep her from being the moderator because of a book she is writing. They would have spinned it so fast, if Ifil would have hammered Plain about her no answers. The voters sitting on the fence would have very well sided with right wing media if Ifil would have called Plain on her no answers. Senator Biden did call her on some of her no answers.

I’m still trying to figure out how some people say she did well. I would be insulted by the media for saying this, some Americans no better than to believe that crap, but they are trying to sway the Americans who are perceived as stupid and don’t have a brain to know that Plain has no sustance what so ever!

This was one of my WTF moments from the debate. (Actually there were many but this is one where I was sure she must have read her notes wrong.)

Palin: It is a crisis. It’s a toxic mess, really, on Main Street that’s affecting Wall Street. And now we have to be ever vigilant and also making sure that credit markets don’t seize up. That’s where the Main Streeters like me, that’s where we would really feel the effects.

Did she really mean to say that? Isn’t it a toxic mess on Wall Street that is affecting Main Street? At first I thought she just read it wrong, but now I am wondering perhaps she really did mean to say that or IOW that was how it was written on her note cards.

Here is my impression of the debate. If we are going to ‘grade’ Sarah Palin using the following criteria I will give her points for the following:
a: She obviously studied very hard for her ‘oral exam’
b: She was able to effectively read complete answers and opinions provided to her by other people
c: She was able to her deliver her lines with the prerequisite proper combination of snarkiness and snootiness mixed in with some well-placed, ‘gosh, gee, golly-darn, I’m just like you’ folksy colloquialisms all delivered with a tight, mean-spirited, clenched tooth smile.
d: She didn’t say ‘guys and gals’ once.

If I were a high school speech teacher I would give her a solid B-. I can’t grade her higher because she didn’t answer all the questions asked.

I’m not sure why so many people think that SP had pre-prepared index or note cards to read from.

Both participants are provided with paper and pens/pencils at the lecterns. They make notes when the moderator or opponent speaks, to help them get their thoughts together. As someone who has taken strictly controlled tests where paper and pencils could not be brought in, but were provided, the first thing I did is quickly write down all the things I thought I might forget, then jot down thoughts that occurred to me as I worked through the questions.

Neither of them was carrying anything when they walked in.

I agree. I think CBS (not NBC) should show everything they shot. I actually think they were very kind to her and found the best they could to show on the TV. I’m betting there is some really bad stuff on the cutting room floor. Since she is criticizing CBS and Katie Couric, I think they should just air everything and let us be the judge.

Poor Sarah, it appears as if she was lying about divesting Alaska’s permanent fund of Sudanese investments last night too! She just can’t help herself, can she? I had a friend in college who was like her…he’d come over and tell the biggest whoppers…they’d start out with a shred of truth and end up being completely unbelievable. When you called him on it, which I usually did, he’d get all sheepish and say “but then it wouldn’t a been a very good story, would it?”. At least my buddy would ‘fess up to it!

OK, I’m really outta here now…got some friends coming to town for some Big 12 football tomorrow and gotta get the house cleaned up.

I’m not sure why so many people think that SP had pre-prepared index or note cards to read from.
Both participants are provided with paper and pens/pencils at the lecterns. They make notes when the moderator or opponent speaks, to help them get their thoughts together.

Just because she didn’t carry them on stage doesn’t mean they weren’t already there. Several times I saw Biden writing something down, never did I see Palin. I was watching the debate on CSPAN which consistently showed a split screen. I never once saw Palin write anything down, but I did see her rifling through her cue cards while Biden was speaking and she was obviously reading from the cards on many of the answers she gave. Palin: It is a crisis. It’s a toxic mess, really, on Main Street that’s affecting Wall Street. And now we have to be ever vigilant and also making sure that credit markets don’t seize up. That’s where the Main Streeters like me, that’s where we would really feel the effects.

Well isn’t that whaty they’re saying? A lot of Reps are putting ALL the blame on the community reinvestment acts created under Clinton. So try to give people a decent loan and decent leg up and it’s THEIR fault some lowlife Wall Street creeps decide they can sell those loans over and over by promising FNMA protection.

You’re more generous a grader than I would be. I recall the days of getting 2 grades on papers — essentially one for content and one for expression. I’d have given her a C- on content. She had at least a minimal grasp of the topics; her responses were, for the most part, related to the question.

For her expression grade, I’d have had a much more difficult time. Do I grade her up for exceeding my worst fears or down for seeming so “common.” So, on average, I’d probably have given her a C for expression.

Personally, I’m not impressed by her folksy ways. I want my leaders to be at least as intelligent as I am, and at least as well spoken. The word “trailer trash” keeps coming to mind — a prettier version of Paula Jones… I abhor that expression as it insults a dear aunt of mine who lived in a mobile home and who could have put Sarah Palin to shame in a discussion on virtually any topic short of the finer points of field-dressing a moose. And I wonder how many of the people she tries to reach with that folksy manner live in $500,000 homes with their own tanning beds, nannies to take over child-care duties, and the like.

OMG! A McCain-Palin yard sign just showed up in my neighborhood… in their cul de sac of 6 houses, 3 of them are vacant due to foreclosures. Sigh. Hope our Obama-Biden one shows up soon! I’m still waiting for my tee shirt…

Donated to the DSCC today. According to the guy who called, Libby Dole is struggling in her race, as is Sununu. Mark Warner is seriously ahead of Gilmore for John Warner’s seat. Tom Udall is way ahead of his GOP rival for Domenici’s seat. Mark Udall is leading in the race in CO for Allard’s seat. Whoooohoooo, dare we hope for 60? My guy and I have both donated to both Obama and the DSCC this time around.

If anyone is still in denial about what the mortgage meltdown really means, take a look at my blog post. A vid of a piece the LA PBS station did, and a link to the CNN article about a 90 year old woman who was being foreclosed on. They’ll bring tears to your eyes on so many fronts.

I see the Palins just released their tax returns, has any one in AK had a chance to take a look at them? I’m certainly curious about the figures I’ve seen so far. If they are correct she and first dud should actually support Obama. They would not have to pay nearly as much in taxes.

I have a teensy crush on Joe Biden after last night. I’d stay in a box for a thousand years rather than lose a child. Mr. POW is a fraud in so many ways. Someone a long time ago on a different thread said that Failin seemed to be someone who had not yet grown through loss & challenges. I agree completely! Could there possibly be a more juvenile 44 year old on the face of the earth? McLame probably was as bad as her at that age, but that was almost 30 years ago. I am so sick of her and can’t wait until this is all over.

OK…I’m still here…just can’t seem to get away today. Just from a quick look at their taxes I believe they have taken too much Sec 179 depreciation on the 2007 Sch C for Todd’s racing…I think it is limited to income on an activity by activity basis, not in total.

Also, is his racing a hobby or a legitimate business? You can only recognize hobby losses to the extent of the income produced by the activity. Generally an activity is considered a hobby if you have not had profits in three out of five consecutive years.

Also, where are those per diems and travel expenses?

Say it Ain’t So Joe was a scripted line!

Everyone heard her ask at the very beginning of the debate if she could call Sen Biden “Joe” which in and of itself is pretty unusual seeings how everyone else tends to use each other’s titles. I thought it was brassy myself at the least.

But, she was setting herself up for a line later on!

She seemed almost too scripted and utterly amateurish when she urgently blurted out the “Say it ain’t so, Joe” line from the movie “Eight Men Out”, Charlie Sheen, John Cusack… Man, did she seem proud of herself to be able to identify an opportunity to use it and she was deflated when the audience didn’t pick up on it. You know, like a little kid that pulled a funny and noone got it.

In one scene from the movie, Shoeless Joe Jackson emerges from a building during the middle of an investigation for allegedly throwing the World Series. A small kid in knickers looks up to Jackson and pleads, “say it ain’t so Joe, say it ain’t so.”

Jackson and his team mates were ultimately cleared of the charges but banned from baseball for life.

Good movie, BAD acting job from Palin. Someone on another thread called her sophomoric.

McCain’s camp deliver signs for free, so that’s why they are cropping up. I really am not going to spend 8.00 plus shipping for an Obama yard sign this late in the game, but my neighbors have a McCain/Palin sign up. THEIR neighbor to the right has an Obama sign. I plan to check the local office to see if they have any Obama signs. I will donate, but I don’t think I would get a sign in time from the site now.

Yard signs have been hard to come by across the USA. My daughter has been volunteering at the sales table at our headquarters and she was told they were giving priority to swing states. Seems like a wise move to me.

Teachers didn’t mark my homework yesterday, so I sent off the following for my homework today.

Dear Honorable Senators and Legislators of the State of Alaska,

I was quite disappointed not to receive any response or even acknowledgment of my e-mail of yesterday.

I am a voter in the upcoming presidential election and I intend to cast my ballot for a slate that is open, transparent, and accountable. Perhaps you are unaware of the importance to the rest of the nation of learning the truth, whether favorable or otherwise, about the allegations that have been raised about the firing of Mr. Monaghan. I’m sure I speak for many other when I state that if I cannot be sure that nothing is being concealed about Sarah Palin’s record as an executive, I will be less inclined to vote for the McCain/ Palin ticket.

The Branchflower investigation, as was today recognized by your own Superior Court, is a legitimate and proper exercise of legislative power. Having reviewed the decision, I believe that the Supreme Court of Alaska will concur.

No doubt, you will by now have resolved that it is imperative that Alaskans and all US citizens have all the information that can be made available to them. I hope that you will vote to accept and release the Branchflower report when it is tendered on October 10.

Wilkens needs to understand that ANY American citizen has the right to question a publlic servant. What happens in Alaska, even putting the presidential race aside, affects not only the other 49 states, but the world as well.
